0:00:17 > 0:00:20and it takes skill and determination.
0:00:21 > 0:00:25And the most important piece of clothing is the distinctive jacket.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28It's a bit like another game I know.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33So come on, let's go Bargain Hunting.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Let's meet our teams,
0:01:47 > 0:01:50because today, we've got two teams of very good friends.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53For the Reds, we've got Mark and Mandy
0:01:53 > 0:01:56and for the Blues we've got Anya and Jenny. Hello.
0:01:56 > 0:01:58- ALL:- Hello.
0:01:58 > 0:01:59That's what I like. Starting with the Reds.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03Now, Mandy, you trained as a veterinary nurse,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05but apparently, you're now breeding dogs, is that right?
0:02:05 > 0:02:07I breed and show Ibizan Hounds.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10I've bred several that have won very well at Crufts,
0:02:10 > 0:02:12- and I also have a champion.- Really?
0:02:12 > 0:02:14- Crufts itself, that's amazing. - I have.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17And there's a connection with dogs between you and Mark, yeah?
0:02:17 > 0:02:20Mark's wife and myself met through dogs,
0:02:20 > 0:02:23through the dog showing, and then that's how I met Mark.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27You've got something of a nocturnal habit,
0:02:27 > 0:02:29which takes some believing, so tell me.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33I'm very well-known locally for sleepwalking.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37I can leave the house, unlock the door, put my trainers on,
0:02:37 > 0:02:40go for a little walk around the local area,
0:02:40 > 0:02:42come back, unlock the house,
0:02:42 > 0:02:45go back to bed, and my husband very often doesn't even wake up.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49And there's no bag of swag underneath your bed when you wake up?
0:02:49 > 0:02:51No, I've never done anything inappropriate.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53You've never turned to cat burglary as an excuse?
0:02:53 > 0:02:54No, not at all. No.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Mark, you're also a dog lover, obviously.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00That's right, Eric, we've got salukis.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02Oh, they're very sort of exotic.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04Yeah, they're hunting dogs. Really lovely.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06You see them on Art Deco figures, don't you?
0:03:06 > 0:03:08- Women being dragged along. - Yeah, those and borzois.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10They've got that kind of look about them.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11But you're also a bit of a collector.
0:03:11 > 0:03:13Tell me what you collect.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15I kind of like toys, really. I'm a bit of a kid at heart.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17I've got a collection of a few Action Men,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19range from the '60s into the '70s.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21Are you an action man yourself?
0:03:21 > 0:03:22Not really, no.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24No, I used to be a bit more sporty, but not any more.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26So, you two are obviously good friends,
0:03:26 > 0:03:29and you've obviously been discussing tactics, what have you come up with?
0:03:29 > 0:03:31We're going to try to buy as low as possible,
0:03:31 > 0:03:32and sell for the maximum profit.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34But the most important thing,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36- gaining the golden gavel. - The golden gavel.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38It doesn't always work that way,
0:03:38 > 0:03:41but in your case, I'm going to wish you good luck and hope that it does.
0:03:41 > 0:03:42Thank you. Thank you.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44I turn my attention to the Blues.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46I need to know, Anya, how did you two meet?
0:03:46 > 0:03:48I've got a couple of horses,
0:03:48 > 0:03:51and Jenny decided to ride one of them, so that's how we met.
0:03:51 > 0:03:52How many horses have you got?
0:03:52 > 0:03:53- Three.- Three.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56- Three. One's 30.- Yeah?
0:03:56 > 0:03:58One's six, and one's 12.
0:03:58 > 0:04:02So, what is it about horses that have you so, dare I
0:04:02 > 0:04:04say, sort of impassioned, is that the word?
0:04:04 > 0:04:05Yes, it is, actually.
0:04:05 > 0:04:09They're very independent, they have a brain,
0:04:09 > 0:04:12as my husband rides motorbikes and he controls the motorbike,
0:04:12 > 0:04:14the horse controls me in a way.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17They are a very beautiful animal when you're close-up.
0:04:17 > 0:04:18- Oh, they certainly are. - Especially close up.
0:04:18 > 0:04:22- Definitely.- Jenny, you're a bit of a multitasker, aren't you?- Yes.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25- Not only are you a gardener, you're a tree surgeon.- Yes.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27And you also have what might be described as
0:04:27 > 0:04:30a somewhat dangerous pastime.
0:04:30 > 0:04:31Yes.
0:04:31 > 0:04:33- Rodeo riding.- Rodeo...
0:04:33 > 0:04:34- Seriously?- Yes.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37On a real horse? Not one of those...
0:04:37 > 0:04:38No, no, the real thing.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41Now, that strikes me as being something of a dangerous occupation.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43Yes, it is dangerous. It's...
0:04:43 > 0:04:47After breaking a few ribs and a few broken arms,
0:04:47 > 0:04:49you kind of learn how to roll when you fall,
0:04:49 > 0:04:51and once you learn how to roll,
0:04:51 > 0:04:54you just roll up and bounce straight back on again, it's great fun.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56I think I'll stick to donkey derbies.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Yes, I think you'll be safer.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01So, you two are obviously good friends,
0:05:01 > 0:05:03so what have you come up with for your tactics?
0:05:03 > 0:05:08Basically, to buy as cheap as possible, ruthlessly low,
0:05:08 > 0:05:11and get a good price for it, because we want the golden gavel.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13You do!
0:05:13 > 0:05:15- I wish you both luck as well. - Thank you.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18If you're going to come good with your tactics, teams,
0:05:18 > 0:05:19you're going to need some money.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22- So, £300 for you.- Thank you.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24- £300 for yourselves. - Thank you very much.
0:05:24 > 0:05:25Off you go and meet your experts.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27- Thank you!- OK.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30Well, I think we've got some real competition on our hands today.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32I just hope there's no horsing around.
0:05:34 > 0:05:38We've lined up a couple of very talented experts for our teams.
0:05:38 > 0:05:39She's at of the top of her game.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42For the Red team, it's Caroline Hawley.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46And he's a giant of the antiques world.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48For the Blues, it's Ben Cooper.
0:05:49 > 0:05:51So, Mark, what are you looking for today?
0:05:51 > 0:05:53- Well, Caroline, I'm really looking for some toys.- Yeah?
0:05:53 > 0:05:55If I'm not lucky on that front, I'll probably go for
0:05:55 > 0:05:58some interesting glassware, or something like that.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02Looking for something that jumps out in front of me.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04And what about you?
0:06:04 > 0:06:05Some pretty jewellery,
0:06:05 > 0:06:08or possibly something very nice made out of wood.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10- Anya?- Art Deco.
0:06:10 > 0:06:11I adore Art Deco.
0:06:11 > 0:06:12ENGINE REVS
0:06:12 > 0:06:14You're under starter's orders, teams,
0:06:14 > 0:06:17because your 60 minutes starts now. BUZZER
0:06:17 > 0:06:20- Shall we go shopping?- Yes.- Yes. - Come on.
0:06:20 > 0:06:21- Shall we go?- OK.
0:06:21 > 0:06:23These teams have quite some shopping lists,
0:06:23 > 0:06:25but there's a great mix of objects on offer,
0:06:25 > 0:06:27so let's get started.
0:06:27 > 0:06:31And it looks like something has leapt out at the Blues already.
0:06:32 > 0:06:34Just there. Those horses. Please.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Let's have a look. These are the leather ones, aren't they?
0:06:37 > 0:06:38They're with an antiqued leather.
0:06:38 > 0:06:39They're not new.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42You can see how the leather has aged a little on the side.
0:06:42 > 0:06:43How old would you say they were?
0:06:43 > 0:06:46I'd have thought something in the last 20, 30 years.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48They could well be Spanish.
0:06:48 > 0:06:49Spaniards love their horses,
0:06:49 > 0:06:52and they're well-known for their leather-making.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54So I'd have thought they were made as a sort of, you know,
0:06:54 > 0:06:56decorative, touristy kind of item.
0:06:56 > 0:06:58What do you think?
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Don't like that one, don't like his face.
0:07:00 > 0:07:02I do like that one. He's got a fiery look about him, hasn't he?
0:07:02 > 0:07:04- A bit like you.- Yes, absolutely.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06THEY LAUGH
0:07:06 > 0:07:09So, Anya, you're looking more perplexed.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11Yeah, I am, actually. Now I've seen them...
0:07:11 > 0:07:13- No?- No. No.
0:07:13 > 0:07:14Definitely not.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16May I make an offer?
0:07:16 > 0:07:17- Yes.- Yeah.
0:07:17 > 0:07:18£15.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20I'll take 18.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23- 16.- 16, go on, then.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26- OK, done.- Well, there you go, that was quick.
0:07:26 > 0:07:27- You want that one?- Yeah.- All right.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29- She just bought it. - She's just bought it, hasn't she?
0:07:29 > 0:07:32Yes, she did. You'd better shake the gentleman's hand.
0:07:32 > 0:07:33- Thank you very much.- Thank you.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35- Thank you.- I didn't even know she'd bought it!
0:07:35 > 0:07:37THEY LAUGH
0:07:37 > 0:07:39Anya, I think it's time, for the next one,
0:07:39 > 0:07:41- for you to take a bit of control. - I think I'd better!
0:07:41 > 0:07:43- Otherwise we'll be done...- In two minutes.- Well, in ten minutes.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45- Yeah, exactly.- There we go.
0:07:45 > 0:07:46Right, anyway, let's head off.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49We've still got around about 59 and a half minutes to go.
0:07:49 > 0:07:50OK.
0:07:50 > 0:07:52And they're off.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54Well, that's one way to shop.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56Jenny is galloping away,
0:07:56 > 0:07:59and it seems the Reds are getting a bit cheeky.
0:07:59 > 0:08:00How much are your legs, please?
0:08:00 > 0:08:02THEY LAUGH
0:08:02 > 0:08:05Sorry, sorry. Shall I reword that?
0:08:05 > 0:08:07Shall I reword that slightly?
0:08:07 > 0:08:09How much are these legs, please?
0:08:09 > 0:08:10£100.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12£100.
0:08:12 > 0:08:13What's it made of? What're they made of?
0:08:13 > 0:08:15Gold.
0:08:15 > 0:08:16THEY LAUGH
0:08:16 > 0:08:211930s table, taken apart, top and bottom,
0:08:21 > 0:08:23and just a pair of mannequin legs.
0:08:23 > 0:08:25I think £100 is, probably, I don't know what you think,
0:08:25 > 0:08:27- I think it's a little bit... - It's a bit too much.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Although it's nice, I like it, I think it's interesting,
0:08:29 > 0:08:30but I think at that sort of price...
0:08:30 > 0:08:32- £70.- All right.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37I think we might think about it at 70.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39And if no-one's going to take it away immediately...
0:08:40 > 0:08:42..I think it's worth, is it worth thinking about?
0:08:42 > 0:08:44Yeah, of course it is.
0:08:44 > 0:08:45- All right.- Thank you. - Thank you very much.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48Let's move on and see what we can see now.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51They are impressive legs, but don't put your feet up, Reds.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55Meanwhile, the Blues are still racing around the showground.
0:08:56 > 0:08:57- Come on, then.- Oh, off we go.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59- Right.- She's on a mission.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02- What about...?- Oh.- What's...?
0:09:02 > 0:09:04- Something's caught her eye. - What about that one, Jen?
0:09:04 > 0:09:06- It's quite nice. - It's nice, isn't it?
0:09:06 > 0:09:09- Ben?- That is a nice lamp.
0:09:09 > 0:09:10You like Art Deco?
0:09:10 > 0:09:11Yes, I definitely do.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14- It's certainly an Art Deco base to this.- What's the price?
0:09:14 > 0:09:15It's £135.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18- Certainly wouldn't pay that for it, but never mind.- Mm.
0:09:18 > 0:09:19Different green, though, isn't it?
0:09:19 > 0:09:21That's the trouble.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24It is a slightly different green, but it is a very elegant lamp.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27- It looks like it's been rewired for modern usage.- Yes.
0:09:27 > 0:09:28And the way she's done...
0:09:28 > 0:09:32I think she looks beautiful, actually. She does look beautiful, doesn't she?
0:09:32 > 0:09:34- And looking at the light fittings... - I wouldn't quite say beautiful.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36I didn't like your horse, but you bought it.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39Well, actually, I'm not telling you not to buy it.
0:09:39 > 0:09:40No, I know you're not.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42- Do you want to ask for the best price...?- I will actually.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45- You're going to have to get the price down dramatically.- I will.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47Cos that's not going to make that at auction.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49No, no, no. If it doesn't do half-price,
0:09:49 > 0:09:51- then we'll look for something else. - Less than half price.
0:09:51 > 0:09:53- Have a word.- Yeah. - It's your turn, Anya.- OK.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55Go and see the gentleman and see what he says.
0:09:55 > 0:09:56OK, thank you.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58So, Jenny, do you think her haggling skills
0:09:58 > 0:10:00- are going to be anywhere near a patch of yours?- No.
0:10:00 > 0:10:01- No?- No.
0:10:01 > 0:10:03She's not as bold as I am.
0:10:03 > 0:10:05But it's her turn.
0:10:05 > 0:10:07It's her turn, though, no, I want her to have a go.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09- This is what it's all about. - Oh, she's coming back.
0:10:09 > 0:10:10Yeah, slight disappointment.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12- Yes?- £100.
0:10:12 > 0:10:13- No.- No?- No.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16- Well, actually, this is your deal. - We can always come back.
0:10:16 > 0:10:17We can always come back, we know where it is.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19And if we're running out of time at the end,
0:10:19 > 0:10:21we can always have another chat with the dealer,
0:10:21 > 0:10:23see if he's got any more movement in the price.
0:10:23 > 0:10:24But I think we should head off.
0:10:24 > 0:10:26He's a very wise man.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29So, let's see if anything has caught the eye of the Reds yet.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32Look at the telephone table, there.
0:10:32 > 0:10:34- I mean, that is so...- Oh, yeah.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37- Horrible.- ...mid-century... Well, or mid-century modern.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39To be fair, I like the telephone on the top.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42- The table, I'm not so struck on.- No?
0:10:42 > 0:10:44- Guys?- Yeah? - I don't want to worry you,
0:10:44 > 0:10:47but apart from the legs, there's nothing...
0:10:47 > 0:10:48Nothing that's really exciting us.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51- No.- No.- No, not so far. - So we need to get a lick on.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53- Yeah, yeah, OK.- Chop, chop! - You're definitely right.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56Ooh, say that again, nobody ever said I was definitely right.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59- You're definitely right, Caroline. - You'll have to tell my husband that.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02I always agree with Caroline, and she's definitely right.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06The Reds need to get a move on, as we are 20 minutes in.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09But it looks like the Blues have spotted something nautical.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13- Do they function? - The thing is, though,
0:11:13 > 0:11:17I'm sure these will almost certainly be well out of the price bracket.
0:11:17 > 0:11:18- £380.- No, no, no. No way.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21- Yeah.- Moving on. Moving on. - THEY LAUGH
0:11:24 > 0:11:29At £380, it's too expensive, so they're not hanging around.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32The Reds are trying their luck indoors,
0:11:32 > 0:11:34and they're onto something straightaway.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36- Ooh.- Oh.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38Now, are those the sorts of thing you like?
0:11:38 > 0:11:40- Yes.- Yeah?- They are. Soda siphons, yeah.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43They look nice displayed like that, don't they?
0:11:43 > 0:11:44They look good.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46£48 on them.
0:11:46 > 0:11:48Oh, yeah?
0:11:48 > 0:11:50- Yeah.- Says half a dozen.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52And I think for that, we could get him down a bit,
0:11:52 > 0:11:54if that's for the whole lot.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57- Is that something to ask about? - Maybe, maybe...
0:11:57 > 0:12:00Maybe we'll stroll back, I think maybe we do the zig-ziggy-zigzag.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02- Ziggy-zigzag.- Yeah, OK.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05Ziggy-zigzag is a new term for scanning more stalls,
0:12:05 > 0:12:07so off they go.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10Meanwhile, the Blues have found something rather intriguing.
0:12:11 > 0:12:13Oh, look at this!
0:12:13 > 0:12:14- What's that?- Medical.
0:12:14 > 0:12:16Surgical instruments are a world of their own.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19There are specific collectors for them.
0:12:19 > 0:12:23It always amazes me, the money that they command.
0:12:23 > 0:12:26- How old are they?- I would have thought, from looking at the box,
0:12:26 > 0:12:28earlier part of the 20th century.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30And what's the price?
0:12:30 > 0:12:31- 75.- 75.
0:12:31 > 0:12:32But what's it used for, though?
0:12:32 > 0:12:34I'm not quite sure what they were for.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37It kind of worries me.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40Do you have an idea? No, I don't want to know your idea.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42- No, you don't want to know. - Excuse me.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44You don't know what they are, yourself?
0:12:44 > 0:12:47- For...dealing with men?- Yes.
0:12:47 > 0:12:49- No way!- Oh, no!- Think so, yes.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51Oh, wow!
0:12:51 > 0:12:55I think the technical term is urethral dilators, Ben.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59Anyway. I'm slightly lost for words at that.
0:12:59 > 0:13:04But they are a lovely bit of medical scientific engineering.
0:13:04 > 0:13:05It wouldn't be a collectors' piece, wouldn't it?
0:13:05 > 0:13:07You have to... There are collectors.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10I mean, I've seen scientific and medical instruments
0:13:10 > 0:13:12make a lot of money.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14- I mean, it is nice. - It is actually very nice.
0:13:14 > 0:13:15Obviously, the box says,
0:13:15 > 0:13:19"Walter Lawley, surgical equipment maker in London."
0:13:19 > 0:13:22And each item is stamped Walter Lawley.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24So they are all there.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26- They're genuine.- How much would they make in an auction?
0:13:26 > 0:13:29Probably an auctioneer would put quite a wide estimate on them,
0:13:29 > 0:13:31so it could be a sort of £30 to £60 kind of thing.
0:13:32 > 0:13:34Ah.
0:13:34 > 0:13:35Would you take £20 for them?
0:13:35 > 0:13:37No, I can't. I could do £50.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39OK, what about £40?
0:13:39 > 0:13:41You might as well, cos you don't know what they're used for.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45So you could be buying something that you don't even know
0:13:45 > 0:13:47- what they are. - I could go £45.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49£42.
0:13:49 > 0:13:51- Deal.- Lovely, thank you. - Thank you.
0:13:51 > 0:13:54We went for quite a bit, then, didn't we, really?
0:13:54 > 0:13:56You both have this habit, we're just talking,
0:13:56 > 0:13:59and then you start diving in for offers.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02- Anyway, you bought it.- Now, do you think that's a good buy, though?
0:14:02 > 0:14:04It's one of these sort of unknowns.
0:14:04 > 0:14:08I reckon it should wash its face and hopefully make a bit.
0:14:08 > 0:14:10What do you think?
0:14:10 > 0:14:13- Pot luck, really.- Pot luck, isn't it?- Yeah, it's pot luck.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16But while both teams continue searching,
0:14:16 > 0:14:19I've been having a bit of a browse myself,
0:14:19 > 0:14:22and I've found something that is Cornish through-and-through.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27Now, this is a fantastic collection of Newlyn Copper.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30You've got all manner of objects being made.
0:14:30 > 0:14:33You've got a chamber stick, you've got rose bowls,
0:14:33 > 0:14:34you've got trays,
0:14:34 > 0:14:37you've got a lovely inkwell and cover.
0:14:37 > 0:14:41And it all goes back to the year 1890.
0:14:41 > 0:14:45At that time, the fishing industry in this part of the world
0:14:45 > 0:14:46was having a difficult time.
0:14:46 > 0:14:51Especially in the winter, when the fleet couldn't put out to sea.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54So you found yourself with an awful lot of fishermen
0:14:54 > 0:14:56with absolutely no income.
0:14:56 > 0:15:00Along comes a man called John Drew Mackenzie, an artist.
0:15:00 > 0:15:05And the idea was basically to train local fishermen to work with copper
0:15:05 > 0:15:08and to make useful and decorative items
0:15:08 > 0:15:09that they could then sell,
0:15:09 > 0:15:12and therefore make themselves an income.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15Now, Mackenzie wanted to follow the principles
0:15:15 > 0:15:18of the arts & craft movement that was prevalent at that time,
0:15:18 > 0:15:21and that believed in handmade objects.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23Objects of quality.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27And this particular inkwell sports beautiful hinges.
0:15:27 > 0:15:29Wonderful decoration.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31Some of the early pieces didn't carry a stamp mark,
0:15:31 > 0:15:34they would often just carry a paper label
0:15:34 > 0:15:37signed by the coppersmith responsible.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39But if you are out there collecting,
0:15:39 > 0:15:42you do need to really look for a stamp mark.
0:15:42 > 0:15:46And unlike a lot of other people involved in metalwork,
0:15:46 > 0:15:49they didn't put their stamp on the reverse of that piece,
0:15:49 > 0:15:52they were very proud to show it on top of the piece,
0:15:52 > 0:15:54as you can see here.
0:15:54 > 0:15:58Now, the work is primarily using a technique called repousse work,
0:15:58 > 0:16:03and that involves hammering out a design on the reverse,
0:16:03 > 0:16:06which is normally laid on top of a soft metal
0:16:06 > 0:16:10that obviously gave way when the piece was being hammered out.
0:16:10 > 0:16:14The end result is a wonderful design like this.
0:16:14 > 0:16:15They specialised in fish.
0:16:15 > 0:16:20Sometimes they're quite mythical, sometimes they're quite comical,
0:16:20 > 0:16:23and sometimes they're quite correct.
0:16:23 > 0:16:26And Newlyn copper has become highly desirable,
0:16:26 > 0:16:29and consequently very collectable.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31So when it comes to the prices of Newlyn copper,
0:16:31 > 0:16:33what might you be expected to pay?
0:16:33 > 0:16:37Well, for a little dish like this with a single fish, £195.
0:16:37 > 0:16:39The fish are getting bigger and so are the prices,
0:16:39 > 0:16:41that's £350.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44But should you want an inkwell, then the chances are
0:16:44 > 0:16:48you're going to be paying the best part of £450.
0:16:48 > 0:16:49But the important thing to remember
0:16:49 > 0:16:52is that you're not just buying a piece of copper,
0:16:52 > 0:16:56you're actually buying an important part of Cornish social history.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00Time to get back to our teams.
0:17:00 > 0:17:01They're over halfway through,
0:17:01 > 0:17:04and the Blues have raced ahead with two items.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08These two are quite extraordinary.
0:17:08 > 0:17:10They dive in, look at something,
0:17:10 > 0:17:12and in the middle of you discussing it,
0:17:12 > 0:17:14one goes off and buys it, the other one goes, "Oh!"
0:17:14 > 0:17:17And so, they're both quite happy about it.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20But there's not exactly team work, at the moment.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22They just fire from the hip.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25But the relaxed Reds haven't found a thing.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27Gosh, Mark and Mandy,
0:17:27 > 0:17:29I thought that they would be really decisive
0:17:29 > 0:17:31and buy things straightaway.
0:17:31 > 0:17:32But no.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35No, no, no. They haven't bought one thing.
0:17:36 > 0:17:37We need to step on it.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39- Yeah, OK.- OK.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41- OK?- Yeah.
0:17:41 > 0:17:44And it looks like the Blues now have Ben running around.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47- Where are you running to? - We're going to try inside.
0:17:47 > 0:17:48You're going to try inside?
0:17:48 > 0:17:50- Yeah, because...- Anya would like to have a look inside.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53- We've got a bit of money, so... - You wanted to buy... Right?
0:17:53 > 0:17:54Something with, like, a wow factor.
0:17:56 > 0:17:57The wow factor sounds good to me,
0:17:57 > 0:17:59but have the Reds found anything yet?
0:17:59 > 0:18:00Please say yes!
0:18:02 > 0:18:04Just look at these.
0:18:04 > 0:18:06I mean, these used to be...
0:18:07 > 0:18:08- ..£80.- Yeah.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10£90.
0:18:10 > 0:18:12- They've got a pusher, there. - OK, all right.
0:18:12 > 0:18:13Do you know what that's for?
0:18:13 > 0:18:15- To push the candle up?- Yeah.
0:18:15 > 0:18:17- So as it winds down, you can push it...- Yeah, yeah.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19- Has that got it as well?- Yeah. - Yeah, yeah.
0:18:19 > 0:18:23Now, I think these are absolutely for nothing at £10.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25- Yeah.- If they were £8, they'd be even better.
0:18:25 > 0:18:29Well, I just think they are so cheap, it almost annoys me.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31Yeah, yeah.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33And the reason people don't want them
0:18:33 > 0:18:36- is cos they can't be bothered to polish them.- Yeah.- But these...
0:18:36 > 0:18:38These are already polished.
0:18:38 > 0:18:40- Well, they are, but they'd come up even better.- Yes.
0:18:40 > 0:18:45I honestly think at ten quid, or probably less, you can't walk away.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48- I do. I like... The thing is I actually like them, as well.- Yeah.
0:18:48 > 0:18:50So they're £10.
0:18:50 > 0:18:51Is that the best price?
0:18:51 > 0:18:53I could probably help you a little bit.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55I could probably knock off... I could do them at £7, probably.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58- Seven?- Yeah.- Sounds good to me. - Excellent.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00- Thank you very much.- Thank you.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03It's a deal! Wow, your first buy!
0:19:03 > 0:19:04Yes!
0:19:04 > 0:19:06What a relief.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09With 39 minutes on the clock, they have item one.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13Now, what do the Blues have in mind for their wow factor purchase?
0:19:13 > 0:19:16It's what kind of jumps out in front of me.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18- Yeah, so...- Something is going to jump out in front of me in a minute,
0:19:18 > 0:19:19I'm sure it will.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22Can they find something that will leap out at them?
0:19:22 > 0:19:25Meanwhile, what have the Reds spotted?
0:19:25 > 0:19:27Ooh, do you do a bit of baking, Mark?
0:19:27 > 0:19:29- I do, actually, I like it.- Do you?
0:19:29 > 0:19:32Yes, I do. And I think that looks like a penguin,
0:19:32 > 0:19:34and I know Mandy loves penguins.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36- Oh, look at that.- Mandy, do you collect penguins?
0:19:36 > 0:19:39I do. I have 3,000 penguins.
0:19:39 > 0:19:41- 3,000?- She has 3,000.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43- Are you joking?- No, no. - Not real, not real.
0:19:43 > 0:19:45Like, everything you can imagine as a penguin.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47- 3,000?!- Yeah, 3,000 of them.
0:19:47 > 0:19:48- That...- That's so cute.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51- That looks from the 1960s. - I think so.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55And it's got the little recipe for the cookies underneath,
0:19:55 > 0:19:57all in ounces.
0:19:57 > 0:20:01- Isn't that cute?- Gorgeous. - I love it.- Well spotted, Mark.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04Look at that, it's even got the original four and 11.
0:20:04 > 0:20:08- Lovely.- How much is that in new money, four and 11?
0:20:08 > 0:20:10- I don't know.- I don't know. - Oh, I really like those.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12It's about 60p, team.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14There's £8 pounds on the bottom.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16- Do you want me to go and see the stall owner?- Yes, please.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19- Do you want me to go and buy them? - Yes, please.- I will, thank you.
0:20:19 > 0:20:22Those cutters have caused temperatures to rise,
0:20:22 > 0:20:25so while Caroline goes off to do the deal,
0:20:25 > 0:20:27the Blues are back outside.
0:20:27 > 0:20:29Has anything stirred their interest?
0:20:29 > 0:20:30You see those spoons, Jenny?
0:20:30 > 0:20:32- Those big spoons.- These spoons here?
0:20:32 > 0:20:34Are they silver?
0:20:34 > 0:20:36Those look as if they'll all be silver.
0:20:36 > 0:20:38The very large ones are called a basting spoon.
0:20:38 > 0:20:39So, they're for basting.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42Would they be individual, or would that be a set?
0:20:42 > 0:20:44They'd be individual. You might have pairs.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46You don't get sets of them.
0:20:46 > 0:20:48Are you interested in looking at something like that?
0:20:48 > 0:20:49- No, not really.- No.
0:20:51 > 0:20:53What are you interested in looking at?
0:20:53 > 0:20:55- Not spoons.- Not spoons.- No.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58Ben, these girls bought urethral dilators.
0:20:58 > 0:21:00They're not impressed by spoons.
0:21:00 > 0:21:04Meanwhile, what is the news on the cookie cutters?
0:21:04 > 0:21:05So, they'll do it for a fiver.
0:21:05 > 0:21:06Will you accept that?
0:21:06 > 0:21:08- Yes.- Yes, definitely.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10Yes! Second item bought! Woohoo!
0:21:10 > 0:21:11We're in there.
0:21:11 > 0:21:15That's a lot of excitement over a set of cookie cutters.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17But they've finally caught up.
0:21:17 > 0:21:18With 20 minutes to go,
0:21:18 > 0:21:20both teams now have two items
0:21:20 > 0:21:21and are on the home straight.
0:21:21 > 0:21:25And have the Blues finally found something they both agree on?
0:21:25 > 0:21:27Oh, look, that's pretty.
0:21:27 > 0:21:28- I like that.- That's quite nice, yes.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30I don't mind that. That's OK.
0:21:30 > 0:21:31What sort of price is that?
0:21:31 > 0:21:32Don't know, I can't see.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36How much have you got on your condiments set?
0:21:36 > 0:21:38- 200 on that one.- £200?- Yeah.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41It's Scottish, Edinburgh silver.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44- It always has a premium price to it. - Right.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47By the look of things, it's also complete.
0:21:47 > 0:21:48What do you think it'll fetch at auction?
0:21:48 > 0:21:51At auction, I reckon it would be something like a...
0:21:52 > 0:21:55It's be a wideish estimate, 150, 180, something like that.
0:21:55 > 0:21:59Now, these hallmarks aren't just on the bottom there.
0:21:59 > 0:22:03Because this is made in many pieces, the next level up,
0:22:03 > 0:22:07- has again you've got the hallmarks there.- Oh, I see.- So, each piece...
0:22:07 > 0:22:09- Oh, I really like that. - ...has a corresponding hallmark.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11Yeah, it's different. It is different.
0:22:11 > 0:22:15And so, when you get to the bottles, each one has the hallmarks.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17So, then you know the whole set's together,
0:22:17 > 0:22:19it's not what we call a marriage.
0:22:19 > 0:22:21What would be your lowest price?
0:22:21 > 0:22:22My best on that's going to be 160.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25I'm sorry, it's quite close to the price I paid for it,
0:22:25 > 0:22:28so I'm trying to be as helpful as I can to you.
0:22:28 > 0:22:30- Right.- It's just the nature of it.
0:22:30 > 0:22:32- Because you've got the... - That or my light?
0:22:32 > 0:22:34I think that'll make more money than the light.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37- Do you think so?- I personally prefer this to the light.- I do.
0:22:37 > 0:22:39- Yeah, I do.- What you want to do? You said to me...
0:22:39 > 0:22:41Yeah, I tell you what, I think we'll go for it.
0:22:41 > 0:22:43- You're going to go for it? - Yeah, I think so.- You sure?- Yeah.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45- You said...- What do you think?
0:22:46 > 0:22:49No, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, but if you want it...
0:22:49 > 0:22:50No, no, no, no, no.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52It's what's going to make the money, isn't?
0:22:52 > 0:22:54- Yeah.- And we haven't got time left.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56- Go on, then, buy it.- Yeah. We'll take it.
0:22:56 > 0:22:58Yep. Shake the lady's hand.
0:22:58 > 0:22:59- Job done. Grudgingly.- Sorry.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01- That's all right.- Sorry.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03Thank you very much for being patient.
0:23:03 > 0:23:05- No problem. - Well, you've done it, girls.
0:23:05 > 0:23:06All three items.
0:23:06 > 0:23:08There's been a little fight.
0:23:08 > 0:23:10- Yes.- Why don't we just go chill out,
0:23:10 > 0:23:14enjoy the sunshine and leave the Reds to battle out their last bits?
0:23:16 > 0:23:17Yep, they need to get a move on.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20The Reds have only nine minutes to buy their final item.
0:23:20 > 0:23:22What are you thinking about the soda siphons?
0:23:22 > 0:23:24I think we should go back and look.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26- Are you sure?- I really liked them. - Do you like them?
0:23:26 > 0:23:29- Yes.- Let's go, go, go.
0:23:29 > 0:23:30Quick, quick.
0:23:33 > 0:23:35- Here they are.- I like these.
0:23:35 > 0:23:36- One for yourself. - Oh, thank you very much.
0:23:36 > 0:23:39Could you tell us something about them, please?
0:23:39 > 0:23:42So, basically, before the days of canned drinks,
0:23:42 > 0:23:44you used to have your soda water,
0:23:44 > 0:23:47and they were used as mixers for spirits.
0:23:47 > 0:23:48And how old would they be?
0:23:48 > 0:23:51- They started in the 1930s, these are later ones.- Yeah.
0:23:51 > 0:23:52These are probably from the '60s.
0:23:52 > 0:23:56Right. So, what would your very best price be on the six?
0:23:56 > 0:24:00I could take you down to 36?
0:24:00 > 0:24:02- Really?- Happy with that?
0:24:02 > 0:24:05- Bearing in mind, there's six bottles and the case.- Yeah.
0:24:05 > 0:24:06That's only £6 each.
0:24:06 > 0:24:10- It's not bad.- How about 30, and making it £5 each?
0:24:10 > 0:24:12That sounds excellent.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14I would rather do 35.
0:24:14 > 0:24:16That would be the best, I'm afraid.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18Can we not squeeze you just slightly more?
0:24:18 > 0:24:21- I don't want to...- I'd do 32, but that would be the very best.
0:24:21 > 0:24:23- Lovely.- OK. I think that sounds excellent.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26- £5 each and £2 for the case. - £2 for the case, fantastic.
0:24:26 > 0:24:28- Is that a yes? - That's a yes.- Is that a yes?
0:24:28 > 0:24:29- Yes.- Yes.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31Thank you very much.
0:24:31 > 0:24:32- Thank you.- Thank you.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36The finishing post is in sight.
0:24:36 > 0:24:38Teams, it's time to stop shopping.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42All done. Come on, let's go.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49They snapped up this pair of Victorian candlesticks
0:24:49 > 0:24:50for just £7.
0:24:52 > 0:24:55Will this nostalgic set of 1960s cookie cutters
0:24:55 > 0:24:57cut it at the auction?
0:24:57 > 0:24:59They were £5.
0:24:59 > 0:25:03And can they start a party with the vintage soda siphons and crate,
0:25:03 > 0:25:05bought for £32?
0:25:05 > 0:25:06Well, a bit of a slow start,
0:25:06 > 0:25:09but you really went for it in the last 20 minutes, yes?
0:25:09 > 0:25:11- Yes!- Yes.- Yeah. Well, Mandy,
0:25:11 > 0:25:13I need to know, what's your favourite object?
0:25:13 > 0:25:15The cookie cutters, cos there's a penguin in there.
0:25:17 > 0:25:18Which, do you think, of the items you bought
0:25:18 > 0:25:20is going to give you the biggest profit?
0:25:20 > 0:25:22The cookie cutters, cos of the penguin.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24Oh, really? OK! All right. All right.
0:25:24 > 0:25:25What about yourself, Mark?
0:25:25 > 0:25:26Cookie cutters as well.
0:25:26 > 0:25:28Love them. I like the box, though.
0:25:28 > 0:25:29I like the artwork on the box.
0:25:29 > 0:25:31- You do?- Yes.- But come on,
0:25:31 > 0:25:33what do you think will give you the biggest profit?
0:25:33 > 0:25:34The brass candlesticks, I think.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36Oh, good. That was your first buy.
0:25:36 > 0:25:39- Yes.- Now, just remind me how much you spent?
0:25:39 > 0:25:43A massive £44.
0:25:43 > 0:25:44- £44.- Yes!
0:25:44 > 0:25:49So, that tells me you're going to give me in return £256.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52- There you go.- Which stays with me for a brief moment,
0:25:52 > 0:25:55- cos I'll pass it now to Caroline for the bonus buy.- Thank you!
0:25:55 > 0:25:57I've seen a few things.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00But I'm going to keep shtoom for the moment.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03While Caroline keeps shtoom but goes spending,
0:26:03 > 0:26:06let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.
0:26:06 > 0:26:09Jenny put her money on a Spanish leather horse.
0:26:09 > 0:26:10It was £16.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14Anya went for the unusual
0:26:14 > 0:26:18early 20th century medical instruments for £42.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20And they sort of agreed
0:26:20 > 0:26:23on the Edinburgh marked silver condiment set
0:26:23 > 0:26:26at a mighty £160.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28Now, ladies, you may be great mates,
0:26:28 > 0:26:30but you didn't always agree out there, today.
0:26:30 > 0:26:33- Definitely not.- I'm sorry!
0:26:33 > 0:26:35But having said that, did you enjoy yourselves?
0:26:35 > 0:26:38- Very much.- You did?- Very much. - Very much. Loved it.- Excellent.
0:26:38 > 0:26:39- It was very good.- Very good.
0:26:39 > 0:26:42Jenny, I'd like to know your favourite item today?
0:26:42 > 0:26:44I think it's the leather horse.
0:26:44 > 0:26:45- The leather horse?- Yes.
0:26:45 > 0:26:47But which of the three items you bought do you think's
0:26:47 > 0:26:49going to give you the biggest profit?
0:26:49 > 0:26:51- I think the horse.- Oh, the horse? - Yes, I do. Yes.
0:26:51 > 0:26:52Anya, where do you go on this?
0:26:52 > 0:26:53The medical instruments.
0:26:53 > 0:26:57OK. But which of the three's going to give you the biggest profit?
0:26:57 > 0:26:58I would say Jenny's horse.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00- You think so?- Yes, I would.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03- OK.- Yes.- Remind me how much you spent, ladies?
0:27:03 > 0:27:04£218.
0:27:04 > 0:27:06That's a formidable spend!
0:27:06 > 0:27:08I mean, you were spending with conviction today.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10- Yes.- The last item, yes.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13So, you're going to give me £82 in the leftover lolly?
0:27:13 > 0:27:15- Yes.- Lovely!
0:27:15 > 0:27:16It goes straight to Ben.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19You got your eye on anything out there for the bonus buy?
0:27:19 > 0:27:21I haven't got a clue at the moment,
0:27:21 > 0:27:23but I'm going to try and spend as much as I can,
0:27:23 > 0:27:25I think that's my mission.
0:27:25 > 0:27:29OK. So, while Ben goes off to spend as much as he can,
0:27:29 > 0:27:31we're going off to the auction.
0:27:42 > 0:27:46Well, we've come to Plymouth and you find us in Eldred's Auction House,
0:27:46 > 0:27:49where I'm join by auctioneer himself Anthony Eldred.
0:27:49 > 0:27:51- Hello.- Welcome to you.
0:27:51 > 0:27:53- Good to see you, Eric. - Glad to be here.
0:27:53 > 0:27:54Right, getting down to business,
0:27:54 > 0:27:56let's have look at our Red team.
0:27:56 > 0:27:57This is Mark and Mandy.
0:27:57 > 0:28:01Now, their first buy is a pair of brass candlesticks.
0:28:01 > 0:28:02What do you think?
0:28:02 > 0:28:05We do see an awful lot of them, but they're in good condition.
0:28:05 > 0:28:07No reason why they won't sell.
0:28:07 > 0:28:09Right, well, what do you reckon, then?
0:28:09 > 0:28:11£5-£10.
0:28:11 > 0:28:14I think there're in with a fighting chance, cos they paid £7.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16Well, that's not bad. That's not bad.
0:28:16 > 0:28:17No, it's not. It's not indeed.
0:28:17 > 0:28:21What are you like on cookie cutters in animal forms?
0:28:21 > 0:28:23- Well, the bonus is they're in their box.- Yes.
0:28:23 > 0:28:26With all the cooking and baking programmes,
0:28:26 > 0:28:27I'm sure somebody will want them.
0:28:27 > 0:28:28So, how much?
0:28:28 > 0:28:30I don't think they're going to be a big seller.
0:28:30 > 0:28:33I think, probably, we're still under £10.
0:28:33 > 0:28:35£3 or £4, perhaps £5.
0:28:35 > 0:28:37Well, they paid £5 for it.
0:28:37 > 0:28:39So again, they're in a pretty good chance.
0:28:39 > 0:28:41- We're in the same ball park. - Yeah, we are.
0:28:41 > 0:28:46Then, this is just two from a sort of set of six siphons.
0:28:46 > 0:28:51All in clear glass, and they are various makers, but, I mean,
0:28:51 > 0:28:53they can be very attractive, can't they,
0:28:53 > 0:28:55when they're in displays and...?
0:28:55 > 0:28:58Yes, I mean, there are people that collect these things,
0:28:58 > 0:29:02and they want to collect all the names of all the breweries
0:29:02 > 0:29:05and all the drink sellers, so I hope we'll find somebody for them.
0:29:05 > 0:29:07Where we going on the estimate for this one?
0:29:07 > 0:29:11Six bottles, in their box, I think £20-£30 is sensible.
0:29:11 > 0:29:13Right, they paid £32.
0:29:13 > 0:29:18So it sounds as though the team are going to need their bonus buy.
0:29:18 > 0:29:19So, let's take a look at it.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24You left Caroline £256 to go and spend.
0:29:24 > 0:29:27So, Caroline, tell us all.
0:29:27 > 0:29:30Well, it's something you'd seen earlier.
0:29:30 > 0:29:32Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
0:29:32 > 0:29:34Do you remember this?
0:29:34 > 0:29:35- Yes.- Yes, we do.- Yes, we do.
0:29:35 > 0:29:37They're interesting.
0:29:37 > 0:29:38We did think they were stylish.
0:29:38 > 0:29:40- Yes.- But?
0:29:40 > 0:29:43But we were quite glad we didn't buy them, on the day!
0:29:43 > 0:29:46- Oh, no!- How much did you actually pay for them?
0:29:47 > 0:29:49You look so worried.
0:29:49 > 0:29:51- £50.- OK.
0:29:51 > 0:29:52- Oh!- That's not too bad.
0:29:52 > 0:29:54So, do they look more attractive to you?
0:29:54 > 0:29:56Kind of, yes, kind of.
0:29:56 > 0:29:58You could paint them a different colour,
0:29:58 > 0:29:59if you don't like this colour.
0:29:59 > 0:30:01But I think they'd be just great
0:30:01 > 0:30:05in the corner of a room with a lamp on it, or your coffee on it.
0:30:05 > 0:30:07I just think it's lovely!
0:30:07 > 0:30:09What do you think they might make at auction, Caroline?
0:30:09 > 0:30:11I think you might be surprised.
0:30:11 > 0:30:13- Really?- Yes.- I hope so.
0:30:13 > 0:30:15THEY LAUGH
0:30:15 > 0:30:17I think they might make 75.
0:30:17 > 0:30:19OK, all right. OK.
0:30:19 > 0:30:21- Yeah. Fingers crossed. It could be all right.- Legs crossed!
0:30:23 > 0:30:26Well, you're looking very worried, you two, I have to say.
0:30:26 > 0:30:29But do remember, you don't have to make your minds up now.
0:30:29 > 0:30:32You do that after you've sold your first three lots.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34But meanwhile, let's find out
0:30:34 > 0:30:38what the auctioneer has to say about Caroline's bonus buy.
0:30:40 > 0:30:45Well, this is one of our more unusual bonus buys,
0:30:45 > 0:30:46what do you think of it?
0:30:46 > 0:30:49Well, it's certainly one of the most shapely items I've ever had to sell.
0:30:49 > 0:30:52Look good in a modern flat, perhaps, or for a student.
0:30:52 > 0:30:53- Mm-hm.- I think it's great fun.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56So what's your estimate for a shapely table?
0:30:56 > 0:30:59I think it's going to make £40-£60.
0:30:59 > 0:31:00- Oh, right.- Could even do a little better.
0:31:00 > 0:31:03Bang in the middle. Caroline paid £50 for it.
0:31:03 > 0:31:04So in with a chance with that one.
0:31:04 > 0:31:06- I think so.- OK.
0:31:06 > 0:31:07Well, that's the Reds.
0:31:07 > 0:31:10Let's have a look at the Blues, which is Anya and Jenny.
0:31:10 > 0:31:13First off, they went out and bought a rearing horse, leather covered.
0:31:13 > 0:31:16Do you get many of these in your part of the world?
0:31:16 > 0:31:19No, I'd have to say I haven't seen anything quite like that before.
0:31:19 > 0:31:21Probably continental, I suspect.
0:31:21 > 0:31:22Made for the tourist trade, I think.
0:31:22 > 0:31:26Yeah. And what do you reckon it, from a money point of view?
0:31:26 > 0:31:27Well, it's decorative.
0:31:27 > 0:31:30I suppose it's going to make £5-£10.
0:31:30 > 0:31:34Five to ten. They went and paid £16 for that, so we'll watch,
0:31:34 > 0:31:37wait and see. But the second item is this...
0:31:37 > 0:31:42Let's describe them as medical instruments, OK?
0:31:42 > 0:31:43Of a very delicate nature.
0:31:43 > 0:31:45So, they're in their original case.
0:31:45 > 0:31:47What are your thoughts there?
0:31:47 > 0:31:49It's not really something that would appeal to a lot of people,
0:31:49 > 0:31:51but there are collectors for medical instruments.
0:31:51 > 0:31:53Yes, there are.
0:31:53 > 0:31:55So, I have no reason to think we won't sell them.
0:31:55 > 0:31:56But for how much?
0:31:56 > 0:31:58We've put an estimate of £10-£20.
0:31:58 > 0:32:02They paid 42, so that might be a bit of a long haul.
0:32:02 > 0:32:03But like you say,
0:32:03 > 0:32:05it's a niche market and it'll be interesting to see how that goes.
0:32:05 > 0:32:08Well, the third item is the silver cruet set,
0:32:08 > 0:32:10nice and neat and a good make.
0:32:10 > 0:32:11- What are your thoughts?- I like it.
0:32:11 > 0:32:16I think it's a nice, smart little object, silver, always popular,
0:32:16 > 0:32:19a little oil and vinegar bottle and another one on their stand,
0:32:19 > 0:32:20all in nice condition,
0:32:20 > 0:32:24and I think probably, we will get at least £40 - £60 for it.
0:32:24 > 0:32:2640-60. OK.
0:32:26 > 0:32:29Well, they paid £160 for that.
0:32:29 > 0:32:30That is a lot.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33We've been a little conservative, but that is a lot of money.
0:32:33 > 0:32:35I think we'd struggle to get that far.
0:32:35 > 0:32:36It's a big ask, do you think?
0:32:36 > 0:32:37I think so.
0:32:37 > 0:32:39It may be that they're going to need their bonus buy,
0:32:39 > 0:32:41so let's have a look at it.
0:32:42 > 0:32:44Well, you're left then, £82.
0:32:44 > 0:32:47So, Ben, what did you go out and spend it on?
0:32:47 > 0:32:50I was determined to try and spend a decent sum of money,
0:32:50 > 0:32:53and so I ended up finding this.
0:32:53 > 0:32:55- Oh!- Oh, that's... Yeah.- Ooh.
0:32:55 > 0:32:57So, it's a Japanese lacquer jewellery box.
0:32:57 > 0:33:02I reckon that the box dates to around 1920s, 1930s.
0:33:02 > 0:33:04And there is a little bit of damage.
0:33:04 > 0:33:06You can just see a little bit on the corner, there.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08But overall, it's in good condition,
0:33:08 > 0:33:11cos lacquer is quite a fragile material.
0:33:11 > 0:33:14You often see them in blacks and in crimson colours,
0:33:14 > 0:33:15so it's quite an unusual colour.
0:33:15 > 0:33:18Very classic Japanese scene.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21And when you open it up, you've got all the compartments for jewellery.
0:33:21 > 0:33:26There's also a drawer here at the front.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28So what do you think? You don't look very convinced, girls.
0:33:31 > 0:33:33I don't know. I'm quite confident about it, if I'm honest.
0:33:33 > 0:33:35- You are, aren't you?- Yes, I am. I rather like it.
0:33:35 > 0:33:37How much did you pay for that?
0:33:37 > 0:33:38I paid 60.
0:33:38 > 0:33:39- 60.- So I...
0:33:39 > 0:33:42You know, I spent a good amount of money for you.
0:33:42 > 0:33:43Will it make a profit?
0:33:43 > 0:33:45I have seen boxes like this make up to three figures.
0:33:45 > 0:33:48- Oh, right.- I'm not going to promise that.- Of course.
0:33:48 > 0:33:49But I think it's got a good chance.
0:33:49 > 0:33:52- It could do.- I think it's got potential.- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:33:52 > 0:33:54- Different to what we've bought. - Absolutely.
0:33:54 > 0:33:55- Yes.- Completely different. - Not difficult.
0:33:59 > 0:34:02Well, just remember you don't have to make your minds up just now.
0:34:02 > 0:34:05You do that after your first three items have been sold.
0:34:05 > 0:34:06But meanwhile,
0:34:06 > 0:34:09let's find out what the auctioneer thinks
0:34:09 > 0:34:12about Ben's Japanese lacquer jewellery box.
0:34:14 > 0:34:16So here it is, this is Ben's buy.
0:34:16 > 0:34:17What you make of that?
0:34:17 > 0:34:19It's a slightly unusual colour.
0:34:19 > 0:34:21It is a little lighter than the usual
0:34:21 > 0:34:24sort of rather dark black and brown ones that you see.
0:34:24 > 0:34:27So I think we stand a good chance of selling it.
0:34:27 > 0:34:29- You do.- Yeah.- OK. And the estimate on that?
0:34:29 > 0:34:33I think probably it will make between 20 and £30.
0:34:33 > 0:34:34He paid £60 for it.
0:34:34 > 0:34:36Gosh. That is a lot.
0:34:36 > 0:34:38Yes, I think it'll be a big ask.
0:34:38 > 0:34:39OK. You're taking the auction?
0:34:39 > 0:34:41I am. Thoroughly looking forward to it.
0:34:41 > 0:34:43Well, I'm looking forward to it, too.
0:34:50 > 0:34:53- So, how are we feeling?- Nervous.
0:34:53 > 0:34:54- Excited.- Good.
0:34:54 > 0:34:56Well, that's a good combination, a good combination.
0:34:56 > 0:34:58So, first time at auction?
0:34:58 > 0:35:02- No.- No.- No, we go regularly to our local auction.
0:35:02 > 0:35:04So, just a bit of a walk in the park for you two?
0:35:04 > 0:35:05- Hopefully.- Yeah.
0:35:05 > 0:35:08With your first lot, you've got your brass candlesticks coming up.
0:35:08 > 0:35:11- Yes.- For which you've paid £7.
0:35:11 > 0:35:14- Yes.- So let's see if we can get a profit.
0:35:14 > 0:35:17And a fiver for those quickly, at £5, six anywhere?
0:35:17 > 0:35:19At five... Six.
