0:00:04 > 0:00:08Hello, I'm in Yorkshire and this is Yorkshire's Nile Wilson.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12Winner of the bronze medal in the high bar at the Rio Olympic Games.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15It's extraordinary to think that if Yorkshire were a country,

0:00:15 > 0:00:18it would have come 17th in the medal table.

0:00:18 > 0:00:19So will it be the Reds or the Blues

0:00:19 > 0:00:21who top the Bargain Hunt medal table today?

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Well, it's time to swing into action

0:00:24 > 0:00:28and head over to the antiques fair at Wetherby Racecourse.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:56 > 0:00:59There are no medals on offer today here at the Wetherby Racecourse.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01In fact, there's no racing either,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03as it's been taken over by an antiques fair

0:01:03 > 0:01:06for our Red and Blue teams to race around.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09They've got £300, and they need to buy three items

0:01:09 > 0:01:12to take off to auction and hopefully make a profit.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Now, who would you back today, the Reds or the Blues?

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Let's have a sneaky peek at what's coming up.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22It's a risky business for the Reds.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26You see, I think you're looking at something that could crash and burn.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Phil's taking no chances with the Blues.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36It's not often that I put my foot down with a very firm hand, OK?

0:01:36 > 0:01:38But you're banned from buying that.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42And at the auction, will the gamble pay off for our Reds?

0:01:42 > 0:01:46- Come on, yes!- There you are!

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Or are our Blues in with a chance?

0:01:48 > 0:01:5245. £40 at the back of the room...

0:01:52 > 0:01:54That's all for later.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Let's meet today's teams.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58And we've got two sets of friends today.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02For the Reds, Charlie and Michael. And for the Blues, Abby and Olivia.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03Hello, everyone.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07- ALL:- Hello!- Now, we've got a couple of rockers here, haven't we? - Yeah, that's right.- Indeed, yeah.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09- Yes, Michael?- Yeah, definitely.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10You've got your own band?

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Yeah, we do, yeah. Started three, four months ago now?

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Yeah, yeah. We parachuted Michael into the band.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19- So what do you play, Michael? - I play drums.- Drums?

0:02:19 > 0:02:21- And I'm the singer. - And you're the singer!- Yeah.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23- Are you enjoying it? - Yeah, love it.- Really?

0:02:23 > 0:02:25- Yeah, it's good fun. - And you do gigs at weekends?

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Yeah, we do quite a few gigs,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30and at the minute, we're in the studio recording our first album.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32- No!- Yeah, yeah.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36- How exciting is that!- Should be out around springtime, I think.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38- And what's it going to be called? - We don't know yet.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41That's an odd name, really... THEY LAUGH

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- It's not all been written yet, so...- No.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46So how are you going to get on tactically together?

0:02:46 > 0:02:49We haven't really got a plan.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51- Have you not? - Going to wing it, yeah.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54We want to just get something that we think is good, that we both like.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57- I like Americana.- Do you? - I do like a bit of Art Deco stuff.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59What about you, Michael?

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Anything kind of vintage, music memorabilia, I like.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Are either of you going to drive that hard bargain?

0:03:06 > 0:03:07- Oh, yeah. Yeah.- Yes?

0:03:07 > 0:03:09I'm the negotiator.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12Are you going to spend big or small?

0:03:12 > 0:03:14We said we were going to spend small,

0:03:14 > 0:03:17but I think we might just go crazy, cos it's someone else's money!

0:03:17 > 0:03:19I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23Now for our Blue team, Abby and Olivia.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24How did you two meet?

0:03:24 > 0:03:26So, we worked in the same restaurant.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29But we both moved to York at the same time,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31and had no friends...

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- Neither of you had any friends? - No!- Oh dear.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Very lonely!

0:03:36 > 0:03:39And so, we were at a meeting at work

0:03:39 > 0:03:42and I just asked her if she'd be my friend.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45HE PRETENDS TO SOB

0:03:45 > 0:03:46And did she say yes?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Well, we're here!

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Doesn't mean you're friends because you're here!

0:03:51 > 0:03:52I just dragged her along!

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Do you still work there, Abby?

0:03:54 > 0:03:57I don't, no. I'm a visual merchandiser.

0:03:57 > 0:03:58A visual merchandiser?

0:03:58 > 0:04:00- Yes.- Explain!

0:04:00 > 0:04:03It's basically a window dresser. It's just a posh name for it.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06- I love poshly dressed windows! - Yeah!

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Now, Olivia, you're A, holding down a job

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- and B, doing a master's degree, is that right?- Yes, that's right.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13I'm working full-time at the restaurant that we met at.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18- Yeah.- And I'm also doing a part-time master's degree in public history.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21- Public history?- Yes. - Tell me about public history.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24It's the engagement of the public through museums,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26heritage sites and television and film.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30- So is this going to help with your buying of antiques?- Er...no.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34I've always found objects really interesting,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36- that's why I volunteer at the museum.- Yeah.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38And ever since I was little,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41my dad dragged me around car boot sales.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Wonderful!

0:04:43 > 0:04:44- What about you, Abby?- Similar.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48My mum is obsessed with furniture, antique furniture,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- she restores it herself. - Oh, does she?- Yes.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Does she restore it to sell it?

0:04:53 > 0:04:54Erm...to keep it.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58It's mostly still in the house, or in the cellar.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Just full to the brim. But yeah, so...

0:05:01 > 0:05:05I've been dragged around antiques fairs and car boots as well.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09- My whole life!- And now it's your turn to drag each other round a car boot fair.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11There's £300 for you to go shopping.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14- Thank you very much. - And chaps, £300.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16- Thanks.- Have a great time, off you go shopping.- Cheers.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Well, well, well. What do we have here?

0:05:19 > 0:05:20A battle of the sexes.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Male versus female.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24But who will win?

0:05:25 > 0:05:28So, all our teams need now are their experts.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32Hoping to wheel out some profits for the Reds, it's Paul Laidlaw.

0:05:35 > 0:05:40And strumming the blues for Blues, it's Phil Serrell.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41So, teams, what's the plan?

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Charlie, Michael - clearly you share a taste in music,

0:05:45 > 0:05:47do you share the same taste while shopping?

0:05:47 > 0:05:49What are we going to be buying?

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Well, I was thinking maybe something '60s, '70s,

0:05:51 > 0:05:53maybe music memorabilia related.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- OLIVIA:- We've had a bit of a think.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57- Bit of a thunk?- Yeah. - What have you thunk?

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Anything to do with animals, I think, a little animal theme.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Anything from old, vintage kind of vinyls,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06- or like posters as well.- OK.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08- Something kitsch.- Kitsch?- Yeah.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Something that'd go in our houses, but not maybe someone else's!

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Right, teams, your time starts...now!

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Now, we've got to find something for a song

0:06:18 > 0:06:21and see if it'll drum up a profit at auction! Come on!

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Come on, then.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Good luck, teams!

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Do you like that lot?

0:06:32 > 0:06:34Ooh-arr, Jim, lad! Ooh-arr!

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Well, it's certainly different, Phil.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39This isn't easy.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42- It's hard, yeah.- Definitely a lot harder than I thought, yeah.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43We've only just started!

0:06:43 > 0:06:46Don't panic, Reds, just focus.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53It's not really very interesting-looking.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Right. Getting a measure of where we're going.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Come on, let's go and see what we can find.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01See if you have better luck inside, Blues.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Scan, and move on.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Yeah? Easy as that.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Listen to the maestro, Reds!

0:07:09 > 0:07:11- Beautiful.- Really?

0:07:11 > 0:07:13REALLY?

0:07:15 > 0:07:17There's lots of giggling going on, Blues.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20So what have you spotted, and will Phil like it?

0:07:20 > 0:07:23- Would you actually have them in your house?- You know I would.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25You haven't done anything rash in my absence, have you?

0:07:25 > 0:07:27We haven't, but we quite like these dogs.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Doesn't look convinced.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Well, you did say "kitsch", wasn't it?

0:07:34 > 0:07:35- Yeah.- Was that the word?- Yeah.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37It's the face he's pulling.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41Do you know what, I'm kind of out of my comfort zone here.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42By some distance.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43These are Crown Devon.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47But I mean, they're very much 20th-century.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51They're 30 quid for the two.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52Frankly,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55I think they're probably £5 or £10 worth.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57The thing is, if you like them,

0:07:57 > 0:08:00I think they definitely fulfil your criteria.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04Because in my book, there is no doubt at all that they are...

0:08:04 > 0:08:05tat.

0:08:05 > 0:08:06GIRLS GIGGLE

0:08:08 > 0:08:10Do you really like them?

0:08:10 > 0:08:11I think Abby has fallen in love.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15I quite like them. And I completely agree. Yeah.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Do you want to find out how much they are?

0:08:17 > 0:08:18You're hiding!

0:08:18 > 0:08:22- Yes, I'm hiding. - With some justification, actually.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27Now, don't ask me why, but these two want to buy these off you.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29- Well, who wouldn't?- I wouldn't.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32I think these are a tenner. Tell me what the best is.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36£20 for the two.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Are you sure you wouldn't do 15?

0:08:38 > 0:08:40I can't, honestly.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42When do they date to?

0:08:42 > 0:08:45They're about 1950s, I would imagine.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47- '60s?- Yeah.- Something like that.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49You really want to buy them?

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- Yeah.- Very well, congratulations.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- Thank you!- They've got good taste, what can I say?

0:08:55 > 0:08:58I can tell you what I can say, they've got no taste at all!

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Phil may think the Blues have bought tat,

0:09:00 > 0:09:03but they've spent £20 on their first buy

0:09:03 > 0:09:05with only 15 minutes on the clock.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Are the Reds about to snap up their first item?

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- These are very interesting, aren't they?- Yeah, really interesting.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18I don't mind telling you, I think this is so clever.

0:09:18 > 0:09:19I love this.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- Looks really cool as well. - Isn't it?

0:09:22 > 0:09:26So we've got the Hanimex cine camera, we've got...

0:09:26 > 0:09:29What else? The joiner's drill.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Yeah, I think that's an old school fire extinguisher.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Fire extinguisher, yeah, pyrene extinguisher.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38That's just a universal clamp, isn't it, on a ball-and-socket-type joint?

0:09:38 > 0:09:40They look really well done as well.

0:09:40 > 0:09:41Yeah, really well put together.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44I mean, if you had to pick one?

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- I think the cine camera's beautiful. - The camera, yeah.- It's a bit '60s.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51- It's TOTALLY '60s! - It's really retro, like, you know.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54Have you any idea of what these price tags... Are they price tags?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56I think that says £58.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58- It's not crazy money. - No, it's really not.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Nitty-gritty, though -

0:10:00 > 0:10:03you send an electrical thing like this to auction,

0:10:03 > 0:10:06it's going to have to be safety tested, PAT tested,

0:10:06 > 0:10:07and there's going to be a charge.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11So...do we care?

0:10:11 > 0:10:12- Not really.- Nah!

0:10:12 > 0:10:16- I'll see if I can get the guy to knock a tenner off, how about that? - Yeah.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Or more, whatever!

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Dream a little bigger, darling!

0:10:21 > 0:10:23- Right, you going for it, Charlie? - Yeah, I'm going for it.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25- Right, we're just going to admire these lamps.- Yeah, man.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Good luck. To the job of work!

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Good luck negotiating then, Charlie.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33So, have the Blues spotted something even Phil might like?

0:10:33 > 0:10:35What is it you're looking at?

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Well, I like this, and I know you'll like it.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40The silver giraffe. What are you thinking?

0:10:40 > 0:10:42- I can see you love it! - I'll tell you what,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45it's not often that I put my foot down with a very firm hand, OK?

0:10:45 > 0:10:47But you're banned from buying that.

0:10:47 > 0:10:48Now, come along. Behave.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Clearly not! And as Phil said, he's put his foot down with a firm hand.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58Charlie, have you managed to negotiate a good price for the lamp?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- Charlie, what are we paying for it? - Well, £48.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05Magic! I like your style, guys.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Magic, we did it! Now, over there, that's where we're going next.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09After 20 minutes, it's 1-1.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Blues, do these hold a profit?

0:11:13 > 0:11:15I just really like them, I like the look of them.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19I've got two, like, suitcases and a trunk in my house.

0:11:19 > 0:11:20Along with my kitsch.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21Do you like any of these?

0:11:21 > 0:11:23I really like that one.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Yeah, I think I'm drawn to that one as well.

0:11:26 > 0:11:27Let's just look at them thoroughly.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- Look at them.- This one, I think,

0:11:30 > 0:11:31is sort of almost late Georgian.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34It's a leather-bound, brass-studded,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- coaching trunk or box, really.- Yeah.

0:11:37 > 0:11:42This one, I think, may have had fabric or something put in here...

0:11:42 > 0:11:44- Yeah.- ..and that's been taken off.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46But I still quite like it.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- That one is French.- Yeah.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50You can tell I'm an absolute expert,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52cos it's got Toulon on the top of it!

0:11:53 > 0:11:56So out of these three now, we know that one's 80,

0:11:56 > 0:11:58this is 90 and that's 90.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00- Which is your favourite now? - Mine's still that one.

0:12:00 > 0:12:01Can we have a little look inside?

0:12:01 > 0:12:03I think you ought to have a LOT of look inside.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07So go round, right, have a look at the back first.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Right...

0:12:09 > 0:12:11So you've established there's no hole in the bottom.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- OK? And then it's a bit frayed on the front, look.- Yeah.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17You've got to bear in mind that these things are the thick end of 100 and a bit years old.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- Yeah.- So they're going to have... They're going to look, you know,

0:12:20 > 0:12:21frayed round the edges.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Right, you definitely want one of these?

0:12:23 > 0:12:24- Yeah.- Which one?

0:12:24 > 0:12:26I think this one. And I would go for it.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- Let's go and shake their hand then, come on.- OK.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- I think we've got a trunk deal coming here.- OK!

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Right, which one have we chosen?

0:12:34 > 0:12:36I think we'd like to go for the one at the back.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38- Right.- Was that 80?

0:12:38 > 0:12:39- £80.- Is that the best that you can do?

0:12:39 > 0:12:41It is, I'm afraid, yes.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42Right. We'll go for that.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- All right. Thank you very much. - Thank you.- Thank you.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48So, in 25 minutes, the Blues have their second buy.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Are you pleased?

0:12:52 > 0:12:53I think we're doing all right.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- What do you think?- I think we're doing really well.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59I really like the fact that Phil hated the dogs and we loved them.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02- Yeah. So that's definitely a winner. - That's a bonus, if anything!

0:13:03 > 0:13:05We can guess what Phil thinks.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09Those dogs, I think they're really, really horrid.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11I wouldn't have bought them for a pound!

0:13:11 > 0:13:13But the trunk, I absolutely love.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16Perhaps, you know, I might be down with the kids. Bang on trend.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- Of course you are, Phil. - No, I'm not.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21Now, whilst the teams carry on with the shopping,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24I'm going to find out about a fascinating local journalist.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33I've been joined by Anne Wickes

0:13:33 > 0:13:37from the Second World War Experience Centre, here in Wetherby.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Now, Anne, men and women have come from all over the world

0:13:40 > 0:13:43to share their experiences with the centre.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46But you are going to talk specifically

0:13:46 > 0:13:48about one man who saw the horrors of war close up.

0:13:48 > 0:13:53Yes, I've brought along a few of the diaries that we hold in the archive,

0:13:53 > 0:13:57and these were written by a Yorkshire journalist

0:13:57 > 0:13:59called Godfrey Talbot.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03Godfrey, during the Second World War, was a BBC war correspondent.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06But he began his BBC career

0:14:06 > 0:14:12as a press officer in the BBC's Northern regional office.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17On the 1st of September 1939, as German troops invaded Poland,

0:14:17 > 0:14:22he was summoned by the BBC to report to Broadcasting House in London.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26And we do have a diary note that he made of his journey.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29"All the traffic was the other way.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32"Cars almost nose to tail, crowded to roofs.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35"People getting out at all costs.

0:14:35 > 0:14:39"Bedding and prams and cots strapped on top, all fleeing.

0:14:39 > 0:14:45"Everybody expected vast devastating bombing to start at once."

0:14:45 > 0:14:48Gosh. And when did he end up in North Africa?

0:14:48 > 0:14:53He arrived there, in Cairo, in the summer of 1942.

0:14:53 > 0:14:58And they travelled in a sometimes temperamental army truck,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01- which they nicknamed Belinda. - Yeah.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04And she carried all their recording equipment

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- and their kit and supplies.- Yeah.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09And that's Godfrey, seated on the steps.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Conditions on these trips were often difficult

0:15:13 > 0:15:17- and sometimes downright dangerous. - Yeah.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19ARCHIVE RECORDING:

0:15:39 > 0:15:41He was attached to the Eighth Army.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45And the Eighth were, of course, famous for their involvement

0:15:45 > 0:15:48in one of the decisive battles of the Second World War.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50The Second Battle of El Alamein.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53It's generally considered by a lot of people to be the turning point of the war, isn't it?

0:15:53 > 0:15:55It was very important.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59In fact, Godfrey was present at a news briefing

0:15:59 > 0:16:03which the Eighth Army commander, General Montgomery,

0:16:03 > 0:16:06gave on the morning of the Battle of El Alamein.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08"Montgomery holds a press conference,

0:16:08 > 0:16:10"eve of battle at Eighth Army HQ.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13"Made a memorable speech - No surrender.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17"We're going to kick them out of North Africa - No failure.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19"We shall win.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21"It starts at ten tonight.

0:16:21 > 0:16:22"It'll be a terrific battle.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24"Army and Air Force are one.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27"We've waited for this day."

0:16:27 > 0:16:28They really do give an insight

0:16:28 > 0:16:31into exactly what it must've been like to be there.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Was he popular with his audience?

0:16:33 > 0:16:34Yes, he was, very popular.

0:16:34 > 0:16:39And he received many letters from the listeners back home

0:16:39 > 0:16:42who'd enjoyed his broadcasts.

0:16:42 > 0:16:43We have one that I've brought along,

0:16:43 > 0:16:47which was from a Midlands listener.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Who was so pleased with his broadcast

0:16:50 > 0:16:54that she enclosed four pairs of socks along with the letter.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56So he was, no doubt, duly grateful.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59- Thank you very much indeed, Anne. - Thank you.- Absolutely fascinating.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Well, it's time to head back to the shopping,

0:17:02 > 0:17:04and to the battle of the Reds and the Blues.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06But who's going to be victorious?

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Back to it, and it's 2-1 to the Blues.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15We're just over halfway through.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18Now, has Paul spotted something the Reds are going to like?

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Are you talking about that thing that looks like...

0:17:20 > 0:17:25- That big brown...- ..some hockey sticks with some bamboo on it? - That's what it does look like!

0:17:25 > 0:17:27That clearly is a section of bamboo.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29Bamboo, yeah.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Likewise, split bamboo element.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Brass-headed tacks holding it together.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38And these are root bulbs of the bamboo.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40- Oh, right.- Yeah? You get that swollen bit?

0:17:40 > 0:17:42- That's where the roots are. - Oh, right.

0:17:42 > 0:17:43Pull it out.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45That... Let me see what it says.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51Second World War, Japanese bamboo box.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Age... Not Second World War.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56I put it to you, based on the quality of the mounts

0:17:56 > 0:17:59and the construction, that's a hundred year old if it's a day.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01I think that's late 19th- century.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03- What's the price on it? - Price on it is...

0:18:04 > 0:18:06It's £45.

0:18:06 > 0:18:07That seems quite cheap, doesn't it?

0:18:07 > 0:18:10- I mean, could you be tempted? - Yeah, I could be.- Definitely.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12- Yeah, yeah.- But don't you see...

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- I'll ask the question and see if that's the price or not.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17The Reds seem intrigued.

0:18:17 > 0:18:18Let's see what the best price is.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22Back with the Blues - have they spotted another trunk?

0:18:22 > 0:18:24What do YOU think about that?

0:18:24 > 0:18:27- I think that's a lot of money. - Yeah.- I think it's a lot of money.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28You'll think I'm mad. I quite like...

0:18:28 > 0:18:31I've got a bit of a wheelbarrow fixation going on,

0:18:31 > 0:18:32I quite like that wheelbarrow.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35- GIRLS LAUGH - Wheelbarrow?!- Yeah.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Well, you can have your tat, I've got me wheelbarrow.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39We've all got problems in life.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42Each to their own, Phil.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Paul, what's the best price for this bamboo box?

0:18:45 > 0:18:4845. You tempted at 40?

0:18:49 > 0:18:51How tempted are you at 35?

0:18:51 > 0:18:54- Oh, yeah.- Even more tempted at 35. - Yeah. It's got to be a winner.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57- Definitely, yeah.- Yeah. - How can you lose?

0:18:57 > 0:19:00Surely, everyone at an auction, like you and I, is going to go,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03"I don't know what, but I know it's quality."

0:19:03 > 0:19:05- Yeah, yeah. Totally agree. - Definitely.- We done it?

0:19:05 > 0:19:08- 100%, that's it. - Fellas, look at this, two down.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11And we've just been in the door 30 seconds!

0:19:11 > 0:19:12Righty!

0:19:12 > 0:19:17So the Reds have got a genuine antique for their second buy.

0:19:17 > 0:19:1835 minutes down.

0:19:18 > 0:19:19How are you finding it, Reds?

0:19:21 > 0:19:24We were hoping to get something like... Some old Beatles stuff,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27something like that. But we've ended up buying an antique box and a lamp!

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Paul, are you happy?

0:19:32 > 0:19:35One more thing to buy. Thankfully, plenty time to do it.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38I've jinxed myself. I'm going to leave it over to them.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40They've got a strong sense of style and taste.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44I'm interested to see what they pull out the hat next.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46So am I. Now, it appears the Blues

0:19:46 > 0:19:48have stumbled across the quirky lamp stall.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51- I absolutely love this. What do you think?- Yeah.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53- It's gorgeous, look at it. - Yeah, it's really cool.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55I really like the colour as well.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58I think that would look really nice in a house.

0:19:58 > 0:19:59So we're thinking...

0:19:59 > 0:20:01We love this to start off with, but look at that.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03That's a...

0:20:03 > 0:20:07Probably, I would think a French Art Deco in style vacuum cleaner,

0:20:07 > 0:20:091920s or '30s.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11But the way he's done it, I think it's so cool.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14- Yeah.- And that would either sit in the corner of a room, wouldn't it?

0:20:14 > 0:20:16- Or it would sit on a table. - Yeah, yeah.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19- It's definitely a statement. - It is.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21You'd walk into the house and be like, "Wow, that's really cool."

0:20:21 > 0:20:24The thing you have to bear in mind with all electrical items

0:20:24 > 0:20:27is that when they go to auction, they have to be PAT tested.

0:20:27 > 0:20:29And there's going to be a cost involved in that.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31But you need to just factor that in.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33You certainly do.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36And today's auction house will charge £4 for a PAT test,

0:20:36 > 0:20:38which will factor in the auction.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41There you are, look. £135.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44If it were MY Bargain Hunt, I'd definitely buy that.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46- I think it's awesome.- Yeah? - Yeah, I do.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49- Really?- Yeah.- I love it. I'm willing to go.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51So you're going to go and...

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Remember, you've got to factor in that cost of that PAT test.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56- I will.- OK?- Mention it!- Yeah.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59- I'll go and negotiate. - Yeah, twice. Three times!- Yeah!

0:20:59 > 0:21:03What's this? All the Blues in agreement?

0:21:03 > 0:21:04Good luck negotiating, Olivia.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Reds, what's next?

0:21:08 > 0:21:11- Guys, what are you looking at? - Yeah, it's like a...

0:21:11 > 0:21:13- Looks like a... - Candle holders?- Yeah.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Dressing table set maybe, for...?

0:21:15 > 0:21:17- Spot on.- Yeah?

0:21:17 > 0:21:19In pressed glass,

0:21:19 > 0:21:20which means moulded.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22- Yeah.- Yeah?

0:21:22 > 0:21:26Frosted amber - which I like...

0:21:26 > 0:21:29- Desperately out of fashion. - It's quite pretty, though, isn't it?

0:21:29 > 0:21:31- I mean, it's...- It is pretty,

0:21:31 > 0:21:33and it hails from the same neck of the woods as you.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36- Does it?- Because that's Jobling's glass, and that's North East glass.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Oh, right. Is it unusual to see a set like that,

0:21:39 > 0:21:41with everything intact, and...?

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Here is my problem...

0:21:43 > 0:21:45- Absolutely not.- No.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47And our other problem is,

0:21:47 > 0:21:49there's no great buying interest for them.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Dressing table sets, across the board,

0:21:51 > 0:21:55whether they're Victorian porcelain

0:21:55 > 0:21:59or 1930s pressed glass -

0:21:59 > 0:22:01not a lot of people care.

0:22:01 > 0:22:02Even Jobling's.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05What do you think? I mean, OK, ask me this question -

0:22:05 > 0:22:07"That comes into your auction, Laidlaw,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10"what pre-sale estimate are you putting on it?"

0:22:10 > 0:22:12- £20 to £40. - Yeah, I was going to say about 25.

0:22:12 > 0:22:13Yeah, yeah.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16And it's sitting at 48.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Should we look, should we just find out what this could be?

0:22:19 > 0:22:21- Yeah, yeah.- Shall I go and ask? - Yeah, yeah.- Give me two ticks.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24Could be a risk, Reds.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Fingers crossed with the price, Paul.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29Speaking of prices, has Olivia got a good one for the Hoover lamp?

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Erm, 125.

0:22:31 > 0:22:32- You bought it?- Yes.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36- Well, Abby, is that all right? - Well, we've already done it. Sorry!

0:22:36 > 0:22:37Yeah, I love it.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40I'm really pleased with that. And that is definitely not tat, is it?

0:22:40 > 0:22:41No, it's great, I love it.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43Look at it, it's beautiful! Like, I really like it.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46I think we've done really well. I think we smashed it.

0:22:46 > 0:22:47- We've definitely won.- Yeah!

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Hands down!

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Come on - cup of tea time.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Loving your confidence, Blues. All items hoovered up in 45 minutes.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Paul, the dressing table was £48.

0:22:58 > 0:22:59Have you managed to negotiate?

0:23:01 > 0:23:03Big problem, guys.

0:23:03 > 0:23:08The big problem being, she's come down to £25 on them.

0:23:09 > 0:23:14You see, I think you're looking at something that could crash and burn.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18This is another dressing table set.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21But Jobling's, it's complete,

0:23:21 > 0:23:25we're selling in the right neck of the woods - what do you think?

0:23:25 > 0:23:28Well, it's difficult to say no to that.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Mmm... Yeah, it's pretty good.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33- Yeah, we'll do it, aye.- Yeah.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35- You just did it, guys.- 25. - That's three.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37- Awesome.- Well done, eh?- Brilliant.

0:23:37 > 0:23:38Well done, Reds.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40But you might have taken a risk.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42GONG Cut!

0:23:42 > 0:23:45Right, teams, your time is up.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48- Right, come on, guys!- All right.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51Now, let's check out what the Red team have bought.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55First up, Charlie and Michael hope they're in the picture

0:23:55 > 0:23:58with this camera lamp. £48 paid.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01Next, they bought a genuine antique,

0:24:01 > 0:24:03and paid £35 for this bamboo box.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09And finally, will there be a pretty profit on this dressing table set?

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Bought for £25.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14Charlie and Michael, I'm slightly disappointed in you.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16- Ha-ha!- Oh, why?- Do you know why?

0:24:16 > 0:24:19- Do you know why?!- Why? - Not a single musical instrument!

0:24:19 > 0:24:22- Oh!- I know, we just went right off the reservation!

0:24:22 > 0:24:25You two rockers went off to buy musical instruments

0:24:25 > 0:24:28and came back with all sorts - a camera, for a start!

0:24:28 > 0:24:30- Yeah!- A camera lamp.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32So, Charlie, what's your favourite lot?

0:24:32 > 0:24:34Erm, the camera lamp.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36- Without a doubt? - Yeah, without a doubt, yeah.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38Yeah? And Michael, what do you think?

0:24:38 > 0:24:40- Definitely the same, the camera lamp again.- Yeah?

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Never have I known such unanimity, it's wonderful!

0:24:43 > 0:24:46- So, Charlie, what's going to make the biggest amount of money?- Erm...

0:24:46 > 0:24:48I think it's the box that Paul picked out,

0:24:48 > 0:24:50I think that's going to be the best one.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52You think so? Are you in agreement?

0:24:52 > 0:24:53I think the box as well.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56- It's, erm... It is... - It's a unique piece, isn't it?

0:24:56 > 0:24:59- Yeah, it really is.- Yeah. - Well, no pressure, then, Paul(!)

0:24:59 > 0:25:02- Well, you spent £108.- Yep.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04I'm afraid that leaves 192.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06Come on.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09HE WHEEZES

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Are your pockets big enough, Paul?

0:25:12 > 0:25:13My word!

0:25:13 > 0:25:16What are you going to do with that?

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Arguably, we've bought a clapped-out old cine camera...

0:25:18 > 0:25:20- Yeah.- ..some bamboo box or other,

0:25:20 > 0:25:24and your granny's dressing table set.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28I want to try and buy something REALLY respectable!

0:25:28 > 0:25:31So while Paul goes off to buy something really respectable,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34let's check out what the Blue team have bought.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39First up, Abby and Olivia loved these dogs.

0:25:39 > 0:25:40Phil didn't.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41£20 paid.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46Next, will this trunk be filled with a profit?

0:25:46 > 0:25:47£80 paid.

0:25:49 > 0:25:55And finally, they all agreed on this Hoover lamp - £125 paid.

0:25:55 > 0:25:56Well, Olivia and Abby,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58that was a pretty focused performance, wasn't it?

0:25:58 > 0:25:59Yeah, I think we did pretty well.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01And you didn't get in a panic.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03No, no flusters. I think we did pretty well.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06- Perfect use of one hour, really. - Yeah.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10- So, Abby, what's your favourite lot? - I think it's the, erm, dogs, yeah.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12- The dogs.- Yeah!- Olivia?

0:26:12 > 0:26:14The dogs, yep.

0:26:14 > 0:26:15- In agreement there!- Yep!

0:26:15 > 0:26:17And which is going to make the most profit?

0:26:17 > 0:26:19I think it's going to be the light.

0:26:19 > 0:26:20- The light.- Yep.- Olivia?

0:26:20 > 0:26:23Possibly, but I would like the dogs to make a very good profit.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25Philip is shaking his head...

0:26:25 > 0:26:26I don't know why(!)

0:26:26 > 0:26:28..quite vigorously there.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30Er, yeah. I sort of...

0:26:30 > 0:26:31The dogs have passed me by, Charlie.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35- Have they?- Mmm.- So, you spent £225, which is pretty good, really.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39- Yeah, we did.- But it does rather dangerously leave Mr Serrell

0:26:39 > 0:26:41with £75, doesn't it?

0:26:41 > 0:26:43Yeah, that's not what we were aiming for.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46Do you want to hand it over? You probably don't, really!

0:26:46 > 0:26:48- There you go!- 75...

0:26:48 > 0:26:50Phil, have you ever seen such riches?

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Well, d'you know what, these girls set themselves out to buy tat,

0:26:53 > 0:26:54and I think they lost their way a little bit.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58- But I'm going to try and put them back on track with that.- Good.

0:26:58 > 0:26:59So while Philip puts them back on track,

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I'm off to Darlington to today's auction.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Today we're at Thomas Watson Auctioneers,

0:27:14 > 0:27:17and I'm with the auctioneer himself, David Elstob.

0:27:17 > 0:27:18- David, hello.- Hi, Charlie.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21Charlie and Michael bought three items - they are so different.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24We begin with this item, which is...

0:27:24 > 0:27:26- It's actually a lamp.- Yes.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28You might...

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Somebody furnishing a home, but then again, it's very small for a lamp.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35You might get a camera collector.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37I don't see a lot of mileage in it, unfortunately.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39It's very much a fad now, isn't it,

0:27:39 > 0:27:41making things into something that they aren't?

0:27:41 > 0:27:44- Yes.- We'll come to that with the Blues in a minute, but...

0:27:44 > 0:27:47- So, what was your estimate on it? - 20 to 40.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Yep, I rather felt that was coming, really.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53- It's not your favourite lot, is it? - It isn't.- No.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56It cost £48, but of course it doesn't end there, does it?

0:27:56 > 0:27:58You've kindly had it PAT tested.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00All electrical items

0:28:00 > 0:28:03that come for sale need to be tested for safety,

0:28:03 > 0:28:04and the PAT test costs £4.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07So, that actually stands them in at £52.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09I think there might be a bit of pain there.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12There might be a bit of pain, but you never know, do you?

0:28:12 > 0:28:15I think their second item, this bamboo, cylindrical box,

0:28:15 > 0:28:17is a totally different cup of tea.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19- I love it.- I do too.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22- I think it's a lovely box. Nice quality.- Yeah.

0:28:22 > 0:28:23Nicely designed.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25I think it was probably made for a scroll.

0:28:25 > 0:28:26Oh, right, a scroll box, yeah?

0:28:26 > 0:28:28I think so.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30And it's very useful, and what a novel item.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32- Put that on a dressing table? - Yeah, it looks the part.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Yeah. What about an estimate?

0:28:34 > 0:28:37- 40 to 60.- 40 to 60, that's better.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39- They might be into profitsville here.- Good.- Paid 35.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42- They've done well. - They've done well.- Yeah.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45Third item is...is more traditional, isn't it?

0:28:45 > 0:28:47How many people would have something like that

0:28:47 > 0:28:48on their dressing table today?

0:28:48 > 0:28:51- Probably very few today.- Yeah.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53- It's erm...good condition. - It is in nice condition.- Yep.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55As you say, it's a striking colour.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57- What about value? - 30 to 50 is our estimate.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00Ooh! Not bad!

0:29:00 > 0:29:03David - quite enjoying your estimates here.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05- They paid £25. - OK, well, hopefully a small profit.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07So you might get them out of trouble there.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09Well, if you don't get them out of trouble,

0:29:09 > 0:29:11they might need their bonus buy.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13Let's have a look.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15Well, Charlie and Michael, you left him plenty of money -

0:29:15 > 0:29:17and can you remember what he said?

0:29:17 > 0:29:21He said, "I'm going to buy something respectable"!

0:29:21 > 0:29:22What have you done, Paul?

0:29:22 > 0:29:25OK, what, chaps, do you think that...?

0:29:25 > 0:29:26Oh, it's the back of something.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28- Back of...? - What's that?- Pocket watch?

0:29:28 > 0:29:31It's a watch - but not a pocket watch.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33Have you seen one like that before?

0:29:33 > 0:29:35- No.- No, I haven't, no. - Is it for a buttonhole?

0:29:35 > 0:29:37- You are on it!- Hey!

0:29:37 > 0:29:39It's a lapel watch, or a buttonhole watch.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41It would go through the buttonhole, thus,

0:29:41 > 0:29:43with the movement hidden underneath the lapel.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Highly novel.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Highly uncommon - certainly respectable.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51- Yeah.- I paid...£70 for that.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53Mmm. How old is it?

0:29:53 > 0:29:56Late 19th century. A proper antique.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58So how much do you think it's going to go for?

0:29:58 > 0:30:02Well, I think it should be £80 to £100 worth.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06I'm not going to tell you I think it's an absolute flyer,

0:30:06 > 0:30:08but I'd be gutted if there wasn't a wee profit left in it for us.

0:30:08 > 0:30:12- I mean, what do YOU think?- Yeah. - Definitely, I think it's got... - It's really interesting, I like it.

0:30:12 > 0:30:16Really interesting it is - to you, and I think to the wider audience.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19- Yeah.- It's a lot different compared to what we normally see.

0:30:19 > 0:30:20Well, the boys quite liked that,

0:30:20 > 0:30:24but will the auctioneer think it's a respectable item,

0:30:24 > 0:30:25and will it make a profit?

0:30:25 > 0:30:31Paul's bought what is I think really quite a rare lot, an unusual lot.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34And here it is, it's a lapel clock.

0:30:34 > 0:30:36- Do you like it? - It looks wonderful, Charlie.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38It's an interesting movement, isn't it?

0:30:38 > 0:30:41Because the actual body of it's like a wristwatch...

0:30:41 > 0:30:44- Yeah, it's obviously very well made and well designed.- Yeah.

0:30:44 > 0:30:47Very nice, I think it's probably late 19th-century in date.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50- Yeah, yeah.- Quite, I would think, a collectable object.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52- Yeah.- A lot of people on the internet, I think,

0:30:52 > 0:30:54will probably go for that one.

0:30:54 > 0:30:55What about an estimate on it?

0:30:55 > 0:30:5640 to 80.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58Paul paid £70 -

0:30:58 > 0:31:01- I think Paul was particularly pleased to find it for £70.- Yes.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03So I think he's confident that it'll go up to

0:31:03 > 0:31:05the top end of your estimate rather than the bottom.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07I think there's some mileage in that one.

0:31:07 > 0:31:08Well, that's the Red team.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11Now for the Blues, for Abby and Olivia.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14We start off with something of a standard lot, really, I think,

0:31:14 > 0:31:16the Crown Devon dogs.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19- Yes. Something we come across a lot of.- Yeah.

0:31:19 > 0:31:23There are collectors out there for them, but not of huge value,

0:31:23 > 0:31:26- I'm afraid to say.- What sort of value?- 30 to 50 is our estimate.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28Well, we call that a huge value.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31I think they bought them the right money, £20.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34- OK.- I think you'll get them a profit, won't you?- Fingers crossed.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36However, the trunk might be a different matter.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38It's a splendid thing.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40- You like it, don't you? - I do, very much.

0:31:40 > 0:31:42Unfortunately, the condition's not great.

0:31:42 > 0:31:45- Yep.- There's some damage to the straps and some wear on it.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47- Yeah.- But it's a lovely old trunk.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50- What of money would you put on that? - 50 to 80 is our estimate.

0:31:50 > 0:31:5450 to 80. Well, they paid top end, 80,

0:31:54 > 0:31:56so the profit might be somewhat TRUNK-ated.

0:31:56 > 0:31:58- I think so.- Do you think...? Yes.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01Well, we'll move swiftly on from that, to the...

0:32:01 > 0:32:06Well, is it a lamp, is it a vacuum cleaner - what is it?

0:32:06 > 0:32:09Well, if it's a lamp, it's a very small one.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11It's not going to light up a room, that's for certain.

0:32:11 > 0:32:15Yeah, I mean, they've got a competition on their hands here, haven't they?

0:32:15 > 0:32:18- One side's gone for a camera into a lamp, the other one's gone for a vacuum cleaner.- Yes.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21The difference is - the amount they paid.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24- What sort of money would you put on that?- I'd put 40 to 60.

0:32:24 > 0:32:28They paid...£125 for it!

0:32:28 > 0:32:30Oh, dear.

0:32:30 > 0:32:34Well, add the PAT test, £4... 129.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37This is going to be a struggle, or could be, couldn't it?

0:32:37 > 0:32:39I think it'll be a great struggle.

0:32:39 > 0:32:40We love a struggle!

0:32:40 > 0:32:44So, it's almost certain that they will need something of a bonus buy.

0:32:44 > 0:32:45Let's have a look at it.

0:32:45 > 0:32:49Well, girls, you left this man with a huge amount of money,

0:32:49 > 0:32:52and he said he was going to get you back on track.

0:32:52 > 0:32:53Has he?

0:32:53 > 0:32:55Ready for this?

0:32:55 > 0:32:57- No!- Definitely not!

0:32:57 > 0:32:59What is that?!

0:32:59 > 0:33:01What do you mean, what is that, it's a wheel!

0:33:01 > 0:33:03Yeah, but why?

0:33:03 > 0:33:06Well, why not? Because it's tat, and you wanted tat.

0:33:06 > 0:33:09It's not even tat - it's just huge!

0:33:09 > 0:33:11Did you buy it or find it?

0:33:13 > 0:33:15I'm an expert, you know?

0:33:15 > 0:33:16On what?

0:33:16 > 0:33:18THEY LAUGH

0:33:19 > 0:33:20This cost £12.50.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22But there's good news!

0:33:22 > 0:33:25Because there isn't one of them, I got you one each.

0:33:25 > 0:33:26So, I bought two, for £25.

0:33:26 > 0:33:30- So...- Oh, my... - What do you mean, "Oh, my..."?

0:33:30 > 0:33:32I feel like this is revenge for the dogs.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34Yeah, you got it in one!

0:33:34 > 0:33:36How much of a profit?

0:33:36 > 0:33:37THEY LAUGH

0:33:37 > 0:33:41Well...I think it'll make between £30 and £50.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44Well, girls, you don't have to make up your mind now.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47Although I think if we waited a hundred years,

0:33:47 > 0:33:50we'd still know what you were going to say!

0:33:50 > 0:33:54But anyway, let's see what the auctioneer thinks of Phil's wheels.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58Well, well, well, here is the bonus buy - what do you think of these?

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Because there's only one here - but he did buy two.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04Yeah, it's a pair of them. They're very large.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06CHARLIE LAUGHS

0:34:06 > 0:34:10- And a bit rusty.- And a bit rusty! - But otherwise, they're lovely.

0:34:10 > 0:34:11What do you think someone can do with them?

0:34:11 > 0:34:14Probably put them onto the gable end of their house.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16- Yeah.- Make coffee tables from them.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18- What sort of value?- 30 to 50.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Well, that's all right. Because they only paid £25.

0:34:21 > 0:34:25- So you might get them out of trouble there.- Hope so.- Yeah.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27You've certainly got a challenge on your hands today, David.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29Off you go to the rostrum, and frankly, good luck.

0:34:33 > 0:34:3575, 75 bid with you.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37At 75, bid, then, internet's out...

0:34:37 > 0:34:3980. 85. 85 bid.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43Charlie and Michael, are you old hands in the saleroom?

0:34:43 > 0:34:45- Not really!- No?- No!

0:34:45 > 0:34:47Ever been to an antiques sale before?

0:34:47 > 0:34:48No, I haven't, actually, first time.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51- Are you enjoying it?- Yeah. - Yeah, it's great.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54First up is the photographic lamp. It's an unusual lot.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57- Yeah, it is.- Will they like it? Let's see.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59It's a vintage Hanimex M300 photographic lamp

0:34:59 > 0:35:01with bulb and tripod.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04And I'll start you with interest at £15.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07- 15. Oh dear.- £15, I'm bid a 15.

0:35:07 > 0:35:0820 on the gallery. 20 bid on the gallery,

0:35:08 > 0:35:1020 bid, I'll take 25.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12At £20 it is, up on the gallery.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14- 20, then, are we all done, are we finished?- Oh, no.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17£5 anywhere else?

0:35:17 > 0:35:19The bid's on the gallery, 20 then, are we all done?

0:35:19 > 0:35:21At £20, all done.

0:35:23 > 0:35:25Oh, no! Do you know, that's just

0:35:25 > 0:35:29a nibbling little loss of 32!

0:35:29 > 0:35:30Oh dear, dear, dear!

0:35:30 > 0:35:32But faith, we've got the bamboo cylindrical box.

0:35:32 > 0:35:37I'll start you with a 25 bid, 25 bid for it, to see 30.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40£25 with me, £30 I'll take.

0:35:40 > 0:35:41I have £25 bid, 30 bid. 35.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43Go on, push it.

0:35:43 > 0:35:4535 bid to see 40.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47At £35 then, all done and finished.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50- We said 35... - At £35, all done at 35?

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Oh...

0:35:53 > 0:35:57Well, after that stunning effort
