0:03:57 > 0:04:00When I was 15, which is back a few years ago,
0:04:00 > 0:04:02I trained as a hairdresser.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04I did that for many years
0:04:04 > 0:04:06and, of course, when the children came along,
0:04:06 > 0:04:10I'd go part-time, casual, I also did some mobile hairdressing.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14But for the last 12 years I've worked at the local pharmacy.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17Now, I've heard you might be called a woman of adventure.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22I do like to be a little bit different.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26I had an experience day, the kids bought me that, on the biplane,
0:04:26 > 0:04:28where you actually fly the plane.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31But this year on my bucket list is definitely

0:04:39 > 0:04:42"we'll all put together and you can do it." So, there we go.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44So, Brenda, you're living overseas, I believe?
0:04:44 > 0:04:46Yes, I live in Spain for most of my time now.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56and I'm a relaxed social type of girl.
0:04:56 > 0:05:01Because I used to work for a bank in the City of London for 25 years
0:05:01 > 0:05:02and that was quite stressful at the time.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and have a nice relax and enjoy myself.
0:05:08 > 0:05:10What are your tactics, ladies?
0:05:10 > 0:05:12Well, the way we've been practising really,
0:05:12 > 0:05:15when we go around the markets in Spain, at the bartering business.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17- She's very good.- Because we always barter at the Spanish markets
0:05:17 > 0:05:19and save 50 cents here and there.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21Well, before you can do any bartering,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42So talking about keeping it in the family,
0:05:42 > 0:05:45I mean, what can possibly go wrong?
0:05:47 > 0:05:49So let's meet today's experts.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53Rocking along with the Reds, it's Caroline Hawley.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57And thinking seriously about making a profit for the Blues,

0:06:51 > 0:06:54- I don't know.- Cos it's cute. - Just...- Is it the price?
0:06:54 > 0:06:57- Well, that helps.- The price is one. Definitely the price is one.
0:06:57 > 0:06:59Right. Shall I go and see

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Have you got any information on what it actually is, was?
0:07:33 > 0:07:37No. It doesn't tell us there on the ticket, just says "metal mouse".

0:07:56 > 0:07:58- No, I haven't, no. - STAN:- Isn't a dormouse, is it?

0:08:38 > 0:08:40- Yeah.- Yes, £20.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43- You can...- Who's likely to want to buy that?
0:08:43 > 0:08:44Is it a collectors thing or not?
0:08:44 > 0:08:47It's a kind of thing which sells online, really, isn't it?

0:09:00 > 0:09:04- Pulling teeth.- Yeah. - Really?- It is.
0:09:04 > 0:09:07The thing is, things associated with pain never really sell.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11Back with the Reds
0:09:11 > 0:09:15and have they got their eyes on another pretty bargain?

0:10:14 > 0:10:16The interesting thing about these figures

0:11:29 > 0:11:31- Yes, exactly.- Yes.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33Because when Queen Victoria went into mourning

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- A coquilla nut or something. - Right, OK.- It says here,
0:12:18 > 0:12:23"Vintage carved coconut basket pincushion. £65."
0:12:23 > 0:12:26- That's lovely and I like the fact you pointed it out.- Yeah.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29- But I think maybe you want something a bit more...- Right.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33- With a bit more gravitas to it, do you see what I mean?- Right.- Yes!
0:12:33 > 0:12:36Well, you won't be pinning your hopes on that one, then.
0:12:36 > 0:12:37Back to business,
0:12:37 > 0:12:40and the Reds are still in pursuit of something pretty.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42Do you know, you two chaps are very surprising.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46It's all very... You're looking at very feminine things,
0:12:46 > 0:12:47which is great.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51- Women spend money. - Women do spend money.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54- What you have to remember is, ladies spend money.- Yeah.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57- Men spend money on ladies. - Yes.- You see.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00So do you both shop a lot for your wives?
0:13:00 > 0:13:02- No.- Ah, right.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04- She wouldn't let me.- Wouldn't she?
0:13:04 > 0:13:06No, because we don't buy the right things.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09Well, on that note, I suggest we move on.
0:13:09 > 0:13:14Meanwhile, it's looking very relaxed over with our Blue team.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17Charles Horner here, a silver brooch.
0:13:17 > 0:13:19- Yes.- What do you think of that, then, Thomas?
0:13:19 > 0:13:22- That's quite lovely, isn't it? - It's a club, isn't it, as well?
0:13:22 > 0:13:25- Yeah, and it's a golf club.- Women's. - Right, shall we have a look in this?
0:13:25 > 0:13:29- Yes, please.- So Charles Horner stick pin or pin.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31- That's quite nice.- Yeah.
0:13:31 > 0:13:34- And it says "Chester 1907" on there. - Yeah, that's good.
0:13:34 > 0:13:35And the hallmark's just there.
0:13:35 > 0:13:40- Oh.- Yeah?- Good.- You can see the Charles Horner mark, just there.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42I think that's rather good.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45- Good spot.- I'm happy with that. Quite happy to look at that.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48- Good spot.- If the price is right.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51- Does the box come with it? - STEPH:- The box does come with it.
0:13:51 > 0:13:54- It does come with it. - That's even better.- That's a bonus.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57What's the very best, do you think? I mean, I know it's only £55.
0:13:57 > 0:13:58- Please.- £48.
0:13:58 > 0:14:0248, can we round that up to make it simple for a simple mathematician,
0:14:02 > 0:14:04like myself, and say £45?
0:14:04 > 0:14:07- Please.- I should think so. - Please.- I can manage that.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10£45, what do you want to do? Do you want to buy it?
0:14:10 > 0:14:12- Yes, please.- DOREEN:- Yes, I think that'll be lovely.
0:14:12 > 0:14:13Thank you so much. Thanks, Stephanie.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15I love her, she's now shaking.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17- Thank you.- Thanks for your help.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20Well done, Blues, you've clinched the deal, two items netted,
0:14:20 > 0:14:23just under the halfway mark.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25While the teams carry on with their shopping,
0:14:25 > 0:14:28I'm going to learn about the history of a local pharmacy.
0:14:37 > 0:14:40There was once a chemist shop that stood on Worcester High Street
0:14:40 > 0:14:43for almost 200 years.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45One pharmacist who traded here was Alfred Steward,
0:14:45 > 0:14:48who purchased the building in 1876
0:14:48 > 0:14:54and kept the business in the family until it finally closed in 1973.
0:14:54 > 0:14:56Recognising its historical value,
0:14:56 > 0:14:59the local council decided to buy the entire shop
0:14:59 > 0:15:03and move all the contents into one of the galleries at Worcester Museum
0:15:03 > 0:15:06where it was accurately reconstructed
0:15:06 > 0:15:09for future generations to enjoy.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12Garston Phillips, from Worcester Art Gallery and Museum,
0:15:12 > 0:15:15has headed over to Leinster to tell me more.
0:15:15 > 0:15:20So, how was the shop saved when it closed its doors in 1973?
0:15:20 > 0:15:22Basically, it involved three of us
0:15:22 > 0:15:27and it took something like three years, on and off other jobs,
0:15:27 > 0:15:31wrapping everything, moving everything,
0:15:31 > 0:15:34putting it in exactly how it was,
0:15:34 > 0:15:37we think, to about 1900.
0:15:37 > 0:15:40Mr Steward decided he didn't want to come back and see it,
0:15:40 > 0:15:42which was a great shame,
0:15:42 > 0:15:44but some of the family came and they helped us out,
0:15:44 > 0:15:46including his sister
0:15:46 > 0:15:50and I think that was the point when we knew we'd got it right
0:15:50 > 0:15:54was when she walked round the back of the counter and swore blind
0:15:54 > 0:15:57it was just the same as it was when she actually worked there.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00So, it was a great achievement and we're very proud of it.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03So tell me more about some of these weird and wonderful objects
0:16:03 > 0:16:06that you've brought along today from the shop.
0:16:06 > 0:16:10This is a pill slab, which is used to make pills and tablets.
0:16:10 > 0:16:14First of all, the ingredients would be mixed up
0:16:14 > 0:16:16with a mortar and pestle.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20We would then take them out, onto here,
0:16:20 > 0:16:23they go on to this slab and they would be rolled.
0:16:23 > 0:16:27Then they went into this lovely machine called a pill mould
0:16:27 > 0:16:34and they would be put in long lengths like that and then, whoosh,
0:16:34 > 0:16:39they would come out as basically pill-shaped but, as you can imagine,
0:16:39 > 0:16:42they would not have been particularly round
0:16:42 > 0:16:45or particularly cylindrical or whatever shape you wanted them,
0:16:45 > 0:16:50so each pill was individually made with a thing called a pill rounder.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53The pill was put on there and you would go...
0:16:53 > 0:16:55until you got the right shape.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57So why have you brought the door-knocker along?
0:16:57 > 0:17:00The door-knocker, everybody calls it a door-knocker,
0:17:00 > 0:17:04but in fact it's not, it's a cork squeezer and, erm...
0:17:04 > 0:17:07when you had a bottle of medicine, like that,
0:17:07 > 0:17:09the cork fits in the top,
0:17:09 > 0:17:13but if the cork was too big...
0:17:13 > 0:17:14it would go in there like that,
0:17:14 > 0:17:17they would do it round and round and round
0:17:17 > 0:17:21- till it fitted in the bottle and went like that.- Oh, interesting.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24- Yeah.- So what about this bicycle pump?
0:17:24 > 0:17:29This is one of the items that came in after we opened the chemist shop.
0:17:29 > 0:17:33Mr Steward used to keep various veterinary pieces
0:17:33 > 0:17:35and he also used to keep veterinary preparations,
0:17:35 > 0:17:38but this is something we call a balling gun.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40I'm not sure if that's the right word for it or not, I don't know,
0:17:40 > 0:17:45but, as you can see, down there, the medication was put in there
0:17:45 > 0:17:49and it would be administered to horses and cows
0:17:49 > 0:17:52by opening the cow's mouth, pushing that down its throat
0:17:52 > 0:17:55and pushing that to make sure it all came out
0:17:55 > 0:17:58and went down into the horse or the cow like that.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01Thank you, Garston, for sharing this fascinating story with us.
0:18:01 > 0:18:02But, in the meantime,
0:18:02 > 0:18:05let's go back and find out how our two teams are getting on
0:18:05 > 0:18:07with the shopping.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18We're over halfway through the shop and it's 2-1 to the Blues.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21Come on, Reds, time to step up your game.
0:18:23 > 0:18:28- I'm trying to work out how it goes. - I think it could go either way.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30- Yes.- You could put four candles in there.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32- Fork handles.- Fork handles. - Four candles in there.
0:18:32 > 0:18:34Fork handles!
0:18:34 > 0:18:36- Or you can turn... - Handles for forks.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40Or you could turn it the other way and put one candle, couldn't you?
0:18:40 > 0:18:42- Yeah.- Do you like that then?
0:18:42 > 0:18:44- No.- No, I don't either.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47- Not over keen.- No, I'm not over keen.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50- No. We'll give that a miss, I think. - Put it down.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53That's another no then from the Reds.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56Meanwhile, the Blues have stumbled across something really unusual.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00Quirky and useful.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Do you want to get in?
0:19:04 > 0:19:06- Shall we go in together? - Yeah, go on.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08We're going to have a shower together.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15Get in there. One of you have got to pump.
0:19:15 > 0:19:17- Right.- I'll pump.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20Then you can pull the cord.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22- I'll pull the cord.- Are you going to wash my back?
0:19:22 > 0:19:23- Oh, I'll wash your back.- Yeah.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29- How much is that?- £1,450.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31- Oh, right, OK.- It's well out of our range.
0:19:31 > 0:19:33Simulated, sort of, bamboo here.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35- Yeah.- I can't believe I've had
0:19:35 > 0:19:37a shower with a Bargain Hunt contestant!
0:19:38 > 0:19:41Well, there's a first time for everything, Thomas.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43But over with the Reds, it's a rather familiar scene.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50- This is like a trinket type. - Yes, like a trinket box.
0:19:51 > 0:19:54From the teak of HMS Birmingham.
0:19:54 > 0:19:56It's a spill holder, isn't it?
0:19:56 > 0:19:58It is. It's almost like a spill holder, yes.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01It says £35 on there.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04Yes. Would you like me to make a phone call and see if we can do any
0:20:04 > 0:20:07- better for you?- Yes. £20 would be a lovely figure.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10- OK.- Whilst Stan is off to make that phone call,
0:20:10 > 0:20:12Doreen has found another quirky piece.
0:20:12 > 0:20:16It's quite nice with the alabaster and the mother-of-pearl and the hard
0:20:16 > 0:20:19stone. I quite like you spotting things like this.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21- How much, though?- £125.
0:20:21 > 0:20:23- Oh, that's not...- You've got the money, you've got the money.
0:20:23 > 0:20:25Yes, but what would it sell for?
0:20:25 > 0:20:28- Yes, but it's not that.- It's £60 to £80 lot.
0:20:28 > 0:20:29- 60 to £80.- Yeah.
0:20:29 > 0:20:34- That's what it's worth.- Sadly, at that price, it's a no to the table.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36So, will it be better news for the Reds?
0:20:36 > 0:20:38Yes, I've got an answer for you.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42Right. The ticket price is £35, but you can have it for £25.
0:20:42 > 0:20:45£20 is a no go, I'm afraid, but £25 we can do.
0:20:45 > 0:20:46I think we'll have to leave that, Stan.
0:20:46 > 0:20:49- Fair enough.- We wouldn't want to do more than £20 on that, would we?
0:20:49 > 0:20:52- Yeah.- No.- Fair enough.- Thanks for asking anyway.
0:20:52 > 0:20:53- You're very welcome.- Cheers.
0:20:53 > 0:20:58So, can I just say, we need to look lively.
0:20:58 > 0:21:00We need to make a decision, so what are your thoughts?
0:21:00 > 0:21:04I think we ought to go back for the pendant.
0:21:04 > 0:21:05The pendant, do you agree?
0:21:05 > 0:21:08- I agree.- The glass pendant at £4.
0:21:08 > 0:21:09Right. Are you sure?
0:21:09 > 0:21:12- Yes.- Quick, go buy.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14Yep, before they change their minds again.
0:21:14 > 0:21:16You only have 15 minutes left.
0:21:17 > 0:21:20- That one there.- Ah-ha, here it is.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23- That's the one.- So it hasn't gone.
0:21:23 > 0:21:26You're lucky. This is the one you want?
0:21:26 > 0:21:28- Yes.- Brilliant. - We agree.- Second one in.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30- Second one in.- Excellent.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32The Reds are finally in agreement.
0:21:32 > 0:21:35Hurrah! You must be very pleased, Caroline.
0:21:35 > 0:21:38Well, it started off very, very well.
0:21:38 > 0:21:43Inside five minutes, the first item bought and then things went very,
0:21:43 > 0:21:45very badly downhill.
0:21:45 > 0:21:50But fortunately we've just bought the second item, for all of £4.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53I can't wait to see what they're going to do with number three!
0:21:54 > 0:21:58With 15 minutes to go both teams now have two items and are on the home
0:21:58 > 0:22:00straight.
0:22:00 > 0:22:01So what's Doreen spotted?
0:22:01 > 0:22:03Well, we were looking...
0:22:03 > 0:22:06It was quite pleasing to the eye, the enamel butterfly.
0:22:06 > 0:22:09- We're assuming it's enamel. - It's lovely.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11We need to ask you what you think.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14- It's lovely, isn't it?- I don't know what the price is.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17What's the label say? It's a David Andersen silver and enamel brooch.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20- OK.- David Andersen was a jeweller in Norway.
0:22:20 > 0:22:21It's all on the back here.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25We'll have David Andersen
0:22:25 > 0:22:27and sterling silver.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29It's £89.
0:22:29 > 0:22:30How well does he sell?
0:22:30 > 0:22:32With a name that sells as well.
0:22:32 > 0:22:33He sells very well. He does sell well.
0:22:33 > 0:22:35It would be the name as much...
0:22:35 > 0:22:37The butterflies are quite popular as well, aren't they?
0:22:37 > 0:22:40- They are popular, aren't they?- But it all depends on the right price,
0:22:40 > 0:22:43so let's talk to Stephanie.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45We know it's worth more, don't get me wrong, we're aware,
0:22:45 > 0:22:47but we're going to an auction, obviously.
0:22:48 > 0:22:52- From our view...- To give you a chance, we'll do £50.
0:22:52 > 0:22:56£48, just so they can do that extra one bid less, £48.
0:22:56 > 0:22:59- OK.- £48.- Can we shake hands on that one again?
0:22:59 > 0:23:01I think so, don't you? With the name. It's got a name.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03- It's quality.- I've got nothing to do with this.
0:23:03 > 0:23:06Is that all right?
0:23:06 > 0:23:09- You said you liked it.- I love it, I'm impressed.
0:23:09 > 0:23:12- How do you feel?- Let me finish, I'm impressed.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15- That's good.- You negotiated from
0:23:15 > 0:23:19£89 to £48 without me having any input,
0:23:19 > 0:23:22I just stood there. Sorry, I'm just going to go now.
0:23:22 > 0:23:23I'm done.
0:23:23 > 0:23:26You've done it, all three items purchased ahead of the Reds,
0:23:26 > 0:23:28in just under 50 minutes.
0:23:29 > 0:23:34So with the Reds now under pressure, Caroline finally gives in.
0:23:34 > 0:23:36Trinket box, £5.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38- What about that, hey? - You're talking his mind now.
0:23:38 > 0:23:41I'm talking your language, I've been beaten down.
0:23:41 > 0:23:44- Yeah.- How does it feel to be dragged down?
0:23:44 > 0:23:46If he sells that, he won't get less than £5.
0:23:46 > 0:23:48Go, go.
0:23:48 > 0:23:49No, you can't.
0:23:49 > 0:23:51You can't. You can't.
0:23:51 > 0:23:53Do it or I'll fall out with you.
0:23:55 > 0:23:56That's fine.
0:23:56 > 0:23:58It's continental.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00- Yeah.- And...
0:24:00 > 0:24:02- It will open.- It will if you're careful with it.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05A little trinket box.
0:24:05 > 0:24:06Very pretty. What do you think?
0:24:06 > 0:24:09Definitely. It's a definite £10 worth.
0:24:09 > 0:24:12- Is it?- Yeah.- Is it a yes from you as well?
0:24:12 > 0:24:13- Go on.- Go on.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16Only because it's so late.
0:24:16 > 0:24:19Brilliant. Thank you.
0:24:19 > 0:24:20At last.
0:24:20 > 0:24:22PHONE RINGS
0:24:22 > 0:24:26OK, I'll tell them. Teams, your time's now up.
0:24:26 > 0:24:28Well, do you think you're on the way to the golden gavel?
0:24:28 > 0:24:30- Most definitely.- I'd cry if we're not, after this.
0:24:30 > 0:24:32Oh, I think I'm going to cry.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34- Can we go and sit down? - Do you want to cry together?
0:24:34 > 0:24:35- Yes, come on.- No, you stay here.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39So let's remind ourselves what the Reds bought.
0:24:40 > 0:24:43First, they were charmed by this
0:24:43 > 0:24:46tiny mouse and teapot, costing them £7.
0:24:46 > 0:24:51Then they took a shine to this glass pendant, price paid £4.
0:24:52 > 0:24:58And the last of the big spenders was this pretty trinket box for £5.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Well, it all got off to a very good start, didn't it?
0:25:01 > 0:25:04I mean, a lightning buy in the first few minutes.
0:25:04 > 0:25:07- Definitely.- But, in all fairness,
0:25:07 > 0:25:10it did slightly go downhill from there,
0:25:10 > 0:25:14gents, didn't it? The last two were impulse buys,
0:25:14 > 0:25:16desperation buys or what?
0:25:16 > 0:25:19- I think all of those. - All those things.
0:25:19 > 0:25:20- All right.- Definitely.- Excellent.
0:25:20 > 0:25:22Tell me, what was
0:25:22 > 0:25:23- your favourite buy?- I think my
0:25:23 > 0:25:25favourite buy was actually the first buy,
0:25:25 > 0:25:27straight in, straight to the cabinet.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30- A little mouse with a teapot. - I'm the same.- You're the same.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32- I picked it, too. - Oh, you did pick it, did you?
0:25:32 > 0:25:34- Yeah.- So which of the three items
0:25:34 > 0:25:36you bought do you think is going to give
0:25:36 > 0:25:39- you the biggest profit? - I think possibly that one.
0:25:39 > 0:25:42- Yeah.- Yeah, I think. - Yeah.- I'd go with the first one.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44- You're like minded on that one? - Yeah.
0:25:44 > 0:25:45So what was the total spend?
0:25:45 > 0:25:47£16.
0:25:47 > 0:25:48£16.
0:25:48 > 0:25:55OK. So that means that you've got a whopping £284 to give to me.
0:25:55 > 0:25:56- OK.- There we are.
0:25:56 > 0:25:58So there we go, Caroline.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00- Thank you.- For a bonus buy.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03- Yes.- Have you got your eye on anything in particular?
0:26:03 > 0:26:06The guys don't really like spending much money, so I don't know,
0:26:06 > 0:26:08I'm going to have to find something cheap.
0:26:08 > 0:26:14OK. While Caroline goes off for a budget bonus buy,
0:26:14 > 0:26:16let's find out how the Blue team got on.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20First up, Doreen and Brenda were delighted with this Indian bronze
0:26:20 > 0:26:24figurine, costing them a whopping £130.
0:26:26 > 0:26:29Next they pinned their hopes on this beautiful Charles Horner brooch,
0:26:29 > 0:26:31price paid £45.
0:26:33 > 0:26:36And, finally, will they flutter away with a profit on this silver
0:26:36 > 0:26:40butterfly, bought for £48?
0:26:40 > 0:26:44So, Thomas, they were a steady buy, weren't they?
0:26:44 > 0:26:45They were focused, these ladies.
0:26:45 > 0:26:50They were very focused. The first item we sort of looked and found
0:26:50 > 0:26:53together and the other two was all their own doing.
0:26:53 > 0:26:56Doreen, tell me, what was your favourite item?
0:26:56 > 0:27:01We did a Charles Horner brooch, golf, silver golf brooch,
0:27:01 > 0:27:03I really like that. I really, really do.
0:27:03 > 0:27:05What do you think is going to give you the biggest profit?
0:27:05 > 0:27:08- That one.- Do you think so? - It's Chester silver as well.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10- OK.- So we had quite a good buy on that.
0:27:10 > 0:27:11- Quite happy with that. - Quite emphatic.
0:27:11 > 0:27:16- Oh, yes.- What about your continental sister here,
0:27:16 > 0:27:17- what was your favourite item?- Oh, I
0:27:17 > 0:27:20went for a little butterfly which was Norwegian.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22- Norwegian by David Andersen. - David Andersen.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25Which of the three do you think is going to give us the biggest profit?
0:27:25 > 0:27:27- My brooch.- Your brooch. - My brooch. Sorry, not your...
0:27:27 > 0:27:29There we go.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33So what was the final spend?
0:27:33 > 0:27:35£223.
0:27:35 > 0:27:39Right, still £77 left over.
0:27:39 > 0:27:42- OK. There we go. - I will pass it over to Thomas.
0:27:42 > 0:27:45Thomas, you can do OK with that amount?
0:27:45 > 0:27:47I think I can do OK with that amount.
0:27:47 > 0:27:50I can find something equally stylish for my stylish ladies.
0:27:50 > 0:27:52- Thank you.- Ah, thank you, Thomas.
0:27:52 > 0:27:55While Thomas goes off to find a stylish bonus buy,
0:27:55 > 0:27:57we're going off to the auction.
0:28:08 > 0:28:11Well, we've gone down the road into Worcestershire and we're at the
0:28:11 > 0:28:15Malvern Saleroom, and we're with none other than Mr Philip Serrell,
0:28:15 > 0:28:17auctioneer extraordinaire.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19- Good to see you, Eric.- Thank you.
0:28:19 > 0:28:20Good to see you. Getting straight
0:28:20 > 0:28:22into our Red team, this is Ron and Sam,
0:28:22 > 0:28:28starting with the miniature trinket of a mouse and a kettle.
0:28:28 > 0:28:31I honestly thought that someone had raided the cracker factory
0:28:31 > 0:28:34and they'd left the mottos and the fancy hats there and they'd brought
0:28:34 > 0:28:37these along. They have entered into the spirit of things, haven't they,
0:28:37 > 0:28:41really? I think that's going to make £2-£5.
0:28:41 > 0:28:44I hate it when you sit on the fence like that, Phil, I really do.
0:28:44 > 0:28:47But either way they paid £7 for it.
0:28:47 > 0:28:53Let's go on to the next item, which is the glass pendant.
0:28:53 > 0:28:55I've not seen anything quite like that before.
0:28:55 > 0:28:58- That must be a huge relief, Eric? - Yes.
0:28:58 > 0:29:02I think that that's going to make £2-£5,
0:29:02 > 0:29:04but who knows? Who knows?
0:29:04 > 0:29:08Well, listen, £2-£5 is good news because it's a £4 spend.
0:29:08 > 0:29:09- OK.- Yeah.- OK.
0:29:09 > 0:29:13- Final item.- This is the star buy, I think.
0:29:13 > 0:29:15- Oh, you do.- I think this is the star buy.
0:29:15 > 0:29:17Little continental trinket box.
0:29:17 > 0:29:19I think out of the three lots that they've bought,
0:29:19 > 0:29:21if I was forced to take one thing home, that would be it.
0:29:21 > 0:29:23I'd put £2-£5 on it.
0:29:23 > 0:29:26If they have a lucky day it might go and make £10, you know.
0:29:26 > 0:29:31So having paid £5 for it, I often see those priced at £15.
0:29:31 > 0:29:34Yeah, they might be in with a chance with that.
0:29:34 > 0:29:38No matter what, they're not going to lose more than £16 there, are they?
0:29:38 > 0:29:39- They really aren't.- No, no, no.
0:29:39 > 0:29:41So whether they need their bonus buy or not,
0:29:41 > 0:29:44let's find out what Caroline went and bought.
0:29:45 > 0:29:50So, Caroline, you were left with £284 to spend.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52- I was indeed.- You've gone and spent,
0:29:52 > 0:29:54so would you like to reveal your bonus buy?
0:29:54 > 0:29:56Yeah.
0:29:56 > 0:29:57- A box.- A box.- A box.
0:29:59 > 0:30:00Ah!
0:30:00 > 0:30:05Containing the most lovely little French silver set,
0:30:05 > 0:30:09which would be a gentleman's set.
0:30:09 > 0:30:15This is a pen knife, vesta case here and here is a pencil.
0:30:15 > 0:30:19It's 900 silver and, can you see, it's beautifully,
0:30:19 > 0:30:22beautifully decorated with lily of the valley.
0:30:22 > 0:30:24How much did you pay for it, Caroline?
0:30:24 > 0:30:26Oh, gosh, is it safe to say?
0:30:26 > 0:30:29- Are you going to be all right? - I might.- I'll hold him.
0:30:29 > 0:30:32Right, OK, it was £149.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34- Oh, my.- £149.
0:30:34 > 0:30:37- Yes.- What do you think it'll make at auction?
0:30:37 > 0:30:42Maybe £150, £160, we'd have to see on the day.
0:30:42 > 0:30:44Well, food for thought there, chaps, yes?
0:30:44 > 0:30:45- Definitely.- Meanwhile,
0:30:45 > 0:30:47let's find out what our auctioneer
0:30:47 > 0:30:50has to say about Caroline's bonus buy.
0:30:52 > 0:30:56- Ah, it's just lovely, isn't it? - It is lovely.
0:30:56 > 0:31:01- Continental?- Continental, it looks either German or Austrian.
0:31:01 > 0:31:03Show me another. I mean, it's quite a rare thing.
0:31:03 > 0:31:04- Never ever seen one.- No.
0:31:04 > 0:31:07So we've got a little pencil in a case, we've got a vesta,
0:31:07 > 0:31:08a little pen knife. Right.
0:31:08 > 0:31:12I have never ever seen one, so I've put £50-£80 on it.
0:31:12 > 0:31:20Well, Caroline went bold out there and she actually spent £149.
0:31:20 > 0:31:22- Wow!- That's it for the Reds.
0:31:22 > 0:31:24Now, for the Blues, this is Doreen and Brenda.
0:31:24 > 0:31:30Their first purchase was this very stylish Indian brass figure.
0:31:30 > 0:31:33These things are so difficult unless you're an expert
0:31:33 > 0:31:35to, A, date them and, B, put a value on them.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38I think that's probably 19th century.
0:31:38 > 0:31:40I think it's £80-£120 worth.
0:31:40 > 0:31:43Well, I mean, they paid £130 for it.
0:31:43 > 0:31:47Well, that could motor. Let's see, as for the next item,
0:31:47 > 0:31:51which is the Charles Horner brooch in the form of a golf club.
0:31:51 > 0:31:55Now, golfing memorabilia, is it still doing good things up here?
0:31:55 > 0:31:58It is. I mean,
0:31:58 > 0:32:01there are a lot of people who collect golfing items.
0:32:01 > 0:32:04Charles Horner is massively collectible.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06I think that's going to make £30-£50.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09£30-£50, £45 paid.
0:32:09 > 0:32:14I dare say, in the heyday, 20 years ago, it would have done double that?
0:32:14 > 0:32:16Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.
0:32:16 > 0:32:21Finally, is their lovely enamel brooch by David Andersen.
0:32:21 > 0:32:22You see, I love that.
0:32:22 > 0:32:27I think that you've got two brooches here that are
0:32:27 > 0:32:31similar in what they do, but a massive difference in today's taste.
0:32:31 > 0:32:33I've put £30-£50 on that, again.
0:32:33 > 0:32:36Well, it'll have to do well because they paid £48 for it.
0:32:36 > 0:32:42- OK.- So all things considered, will they need their bonus buy?
0:32:42 > 0:32:45So let's find out what Thomas went out and bought.
0:32:47 > 0:32:50Now, Doreen and Brenda, I have to say, when it came to your spending,
0:32:50 > 0:32:52you like spending money, don't you?
0:32:52 > 0:32:53We didn't do too badly.
0:32:53 > 0:32:55- Yes.- No, you didn't do too badly.
0:32:55 > 0:32:58What's more, you left Thomas with how much to spend?
0:32:58 > 0:32:59£77.
0:32:59 > 0:33:03Bang on, £77 Thomas, what did you spend it on?
0:33:03 > 0:33:06Well, you two girls, I found something immensely stylish,
0:33:06 > 0:33:07just like you two here.
0:33:07 > 0:33:12It's an Art Nouveaux photograph frame by WMF.
0:33:12 > 0:33:15It's got great design and it's very functional.
0:33:15 > 0:33:17You could put your loved one in there,
0:33:17 > 0:33:20have it on the side of your bedside as you wake up, a picture of me.
0:33:20 > 0:33:22- No.- Oh, yes. Is it old?
0:33:22 > 0:33:24Yes, it's 1910.
0:33:24 > 0:33:26How much did you pay for that then?
0:33:26 > 0:33:30It was marked almost three figures, but I paid £55 for it.
0:33:30 > 0:33:32Yeah, but how much will it make at auction?
0:33:32 > 0:33:35Well, they are collectible, it is collectible.
0:33:35 > 0:33:38It's not so in your face as in flowery and Art Nouveaux,
0:33:38 > 0:33:41it's quite stylish, £65-£70.
0:33:41 > 0:33:43I do see a small profit in this.
0:33:43 > 0:33:45- OK.- You don't have to make your minds up now, do you?
0:33:45 > 0:33:48- No.- You have to wait until you sell your first three items.
0:33:48 > 0:33:49- Of course.- But, in the meantime,
0:33:49 > 0:33:54let's find out what our auctioneer has to say about charming Tom's
0:33:54 > 0:33:56WMF photograph frame.
0:33:58 > 0:34:01Well, here it is, that's what Thomas came up with.
0:34:01 > 0:34:04I think he's done a good job there.
0:34:04 > 0:34:05WMF, which is German.
0:34:05 > 0:34:08- Yep.- Photograph frame.
0:34:08 > 0:34:10Roughly about 1900.
0:34:10 > 0:34:13I think it's not pure Art Nouveaux, in my eyes.
0:34:13 > 0:34:15No, you're right, it's a bit of a compromise, isn't it?
0:34:15 > 0:34:18Yeah. I think that compromise helps it, sort of,
0:34:18 > 0:34:22become a bit of a today's item rather than a yesterday's item.
0:34:22 > 0:34:25I think that's going to make £50-£80.
0:34:25 > 0:34:29I think Thomas bought well, he paid £55 for it.
0:34:29 > 0:34:31We hope it's going to do well when
0:34:31 > 0:34:33it comes to the auction today. So who's
0:34:33 > 0:34:35- going to be the auctioneer today? - It's me today, Eric.
0:34:35 > 0:34:37- It's you?- Yes. - Is it really?- Yeah.
0:34:37 > 0:34:40OK, well, in Philip Serrell, we trust.
0:34:47 > 0:34:49At £35, back of the room.
0:34:49 > 0:34:52So, Ron and Sam, are you regulars? Do you do lots of auctions?
0:34:52 > 0:34:55- We've been to one or two.- We've been to one or two, yes.
0:34:55 > 0:34:57One or two. You wouldn't say you were seasoned.
0:34:57 > 0:35:00- No.- Definitely not. Definitely not. - Your first lot is coming up now.
0:35:00 > 0:35:03It's that little plated miniature of a mouse looking down the spout of
0:35:03 > 0:35:06a kettle. You paid £7 for it.
0:35:06 > 0:35:08Let's see if there's a profit to be had.
0:35:08 > 0:35:10- Here it comes.- Start me at £1 someone.
0:35:12 > 0:35:14Come on. Yes, the lady bid.
0:35:14 > 0:35:16£1 I'm bid. At £1 bid.
0:35:16 > 0:35:20It's your bid, madam. At £1, I'll take 2 anywhere.
0:35:20 > 0:35:22At £1. 2 bid.
0:35:22 > 0:35:25£2. 3. At £3, 4.
0:35:25 > 0:35:284 bid. £4. 5, 5 bid.
0:35:28 > 0:35:31- Keep going. Keep going.- At £5, here's the bid and done then at £5.
0:35:31 > 0:35:33And done.
0:35:33 > 0:35:36It's nothing to lose too much sleep, a minus £2.
0:35:36 > 0:35:38Let's not lose sleep. OK.
0:35:38 > 0:35:39Second item coming up,
0:35:39 > 0:35:44it's the glass pendant with the sort of flower head in it which you paid
0:35:44 > 0:35:50£4 for and either way let's see what it's going to make.
0:35:50 > 0:35:53- It's coming up now.- Who's got a fiver for the pendant?
0:35:54 > 0:35:55Fiver anywhere?
0:35:56 > 0:35:59- Fiver for the pendant? - Come on.
0:35:59 > 0:36:02- If you don't bid, I can't sell it. - Who's got a fiver?
0:36:02 > 0:36:04£5. Thank you.
0:36:04 > 0:36:06£5, £5.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09You're mad. At £5, any bid at 5.
0:36:09 > 0:36:115 bid, £5.
0:36:11 > 0:36:13£5.
0:36:13 > 0:36:14I sell then at £5.
0:36:14 > 0:36:16Done, thank you.
0:36:16 > 0:36:18Your lucky day there.
0:36:18 > 0:36:21OK. You're plus one.
0:36:21 > 0:36:23It ends with a minus one.
0:36:23 > 0:36:25Here's your third and final item,
0:36:25 > 0:36:31it's the continental little trinket box for which you paid a huge and
0:36:31 > 0:36:33princely sum of £5.
0:36:33 > 0:36:35Either way, let's see if there's a
0:36:35 > 0:36:37profit in it because it's coming up now.
0:36:37 > 0:36:40A couple of pound to start me someone.
0:36:40 > 0:36:412 anywhere?
0:36:42 > 0:36:442 anywhere for the trinket box?
0:36:44 > 0:36:462. I'm bid at 2. 2 bid, £2.
0:36:46 > 0:36:47£2. Be quick.
0:36:47 > 0:36:48At £2 and done.
0:36:48 > 0:36:50Then at 2. Away 5.
0:36:50 > 0:36:535 bid. At 5, 8, 10, 10 bid.
0:36:53 > 0:36:56£10. 10 and done. Thank you.
0:36:56 > 0:36:59£10.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01You've just made yourself a £5 profit.
0:37:01 > 0:37:07That has given me a plus total of £4 for the three.
0:37:07 > 0:37:09So the big question is whether or
0:37:09 > 0:37:11not you want to go for the bonus buy?
0:37:12 > 0:37:15We do like it, but we're going to give it a miss.
0:37:15 > 0:37:16- You're going to give it a miss.- Yes.
0:37:16 > 0:37:19- OK.- Sorry, Caroline. - That's fine.
0:37:19 > 0:37:24OK. Remember Caroline paid £149 for this.
0:37:24 > 0:37:27Nice object, deserves to do well.
0:37:27 > 0:37:29Bid me £50 to start.
0:37:30 > 0:37:31£50 I'm bid. At 50.
0:37:31 > 0:37:3550 bid. At 60, 60 bid. 70, 70 bid.
0:37:35 > 0:37:38At £70. I'm only bid at 70.
0:37:38 > 0:37:39Is there any more?
0:37:39 > 0:37:41At £70. There's the bid.
0:37:41 > 0:37:45At £70 and I sell then at £70 and done.
0:37:45 > 0:37:46Thank you.
