0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello and welcome to the show.

0:00:03 > 0:00:07I'm kicking things off in the kitchen, rather than the antiques fair, here in Peterborough.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11Every year, this arena hosts a huge food and country fair,

0:00:11 > 0:00:14so I thought, "What a great opportunity

0:00:14 > 0:00:16"to show off my baking skills."

0:00:16 > 0:00:20Here are the key ingredients that every team needs for a successful

0:00:20 > 0:00:21bargain hunt.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Firstly, make sure you use the "full hour" on the clock.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29You'll need "egg-ceptional" experts.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34Always try and get a "butter" price.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38And, of course, this should really sweeten the deal.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43Next, whip it up into a frenzy at the auction

0:00:43 > 0:00:46and there we have it.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49The winning ingredients for one gorgeously gooey

0:00:49 > 0:00:51golden gavel.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Right, enough of all this, it's time to tuck in.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Let's go bargain hunting!

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Our teams will have their work cut out today.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24There's a lot of ground to cover.

0:01:24 > 0:01:29There are hundreds of stalls and this antiques fair is huge.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31With the aim of making a profit at auction,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33they've got one hour on the clock

0:01:33 > 0:01:36and £300 in their pocket to buy three items.

0:01:36 > 0:01:37But let's not dilly-dally,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40it's time to have a look at what's coming up.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44The Reds rule with their hearts and not with their heads.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46I think Sofia wants it for herself.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49I do, yeah. I would buy this for myself.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51With the Blues, it's more of a diplomatic shop.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Well, this is where we have a full and frank discussion

0:01:54 > 0:01:55and then we do what she says.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59And over at the auction, there is despair.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Oh!

0:02:01 > 0:02:03And desperation...

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Just one more! Please!

0:02:05 > 0:02:07But that's all coming up later.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11It's time now to meet our teams and what a great bunch we have for you

0:02:11 > 0:02:13today. For the Reds, we've got mother and daughter,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15Hannah and Sophia.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17And for the Blues, married couple Carol and Don.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19- Welcome, everyone. Hello!- Hi! - Hello!

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Let's turn straightaway to the Reds

0:02:22 > 0:02:25and to you, Hannah. Tell me, what do you do for a living?

0:02:25 > 0:02:27I work as an independent consultant.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29I'm a scientist and a health economist.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32And I believe you've got some letters after your name.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34In fact, you've been through a lot of university.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Tell me about your academic career?

0:02:36 > 0:02:40I studied chemistry at University College, London and I have

0:02:40 > 0:02:42a PhD from the University of Bristol,

0:02:42 > 0:02:46and a health economics degree from the University of Aberdeen,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49and a business degree from Cranfield Business School.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Fantastic! Wow!

0:02:51 > 0:02:53How do you unwind? Do you get some spare time?

0:02:53 > 0:02:56We go hill walking. So quite recently, we went to Borneo,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00we went jungle trekking, climbed Mount Kinabalu together,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02which is the highest mountain in Asia.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05I mean, I thought that going on Bargain Hunt together was some good

0:03:05 > 0:03:09mother-daughter bonding, but probably climbing the highest mountain in

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Southeast Asia might just be pip it to the post!

0:03:11 > 0:03:13I think this might be just as challenging.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15- What do you think, Sofe?- Perhaps!

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Now, Sofia, tell me,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19it sounds like you're a bit of a chip off the old block

0:03:19 > 0:03:22because Mum's a scientist and you might be following in her footsteps?

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Well, at the moment, I'm studying for my A-levels,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28so I'm doing physics, chemistry, maths and further maths.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30And if I get the grades, hopefully,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33I'll be studying at the University of Cambridge,

0:03:33 > 0:03:34doing natural sciences next year.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37- Wow.- I want to get an astrophysics degree.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Space is considered the final frontier

0:03:39 > 0:03:42and I want to be on the cutting edge of science

0:03:42 > 0:03:44and help to uncover the mysteries of the universe.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Well, you are really interesting and inspiring,

0:03:47 > 0:03:49I'm so glad you're joining us today.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51But you've got some competition.

0:03:51 > 0:03:52In the Blues, ha-ha!

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Welcome, Don and Carol, thank you for joining us.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Now, Don, let's hear how you and Carol met.

0:03:57 > 0:04:02Well, yes, we met when I moved to Leicester

0:04:02 > 0:04:05and was working as a physio at the time.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07I got sent to a new department,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10which was neurology, and Carol was the boss

0:04:10 > 0:04:12and she's been the boss ever since.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Married for 27 years and we've been together for about 30,

0:04:15 > 0:04:1631 years.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Oh, fantastic, that is a lovely story.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Congratulations. So, what do you good day-to-day?

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Done a lot of travelling, we've just been to Machu Picchu,

0:04:24 > 0:04:25just got back from Amsterdam.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28Later on in the year, we're going to Japan.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I like to learn a little bit of languages from wherever we go,

0:04:31 > 0:04:35so we've also started a course in Japanese at Leicester Uni.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38It's totally different from any other language I've never studied.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Good on you because I believe it's very good for the old grey

0:04:41 > 0:04:43matter to be learning languages at any point in your life.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Well, especially, you know, at our age!

0:04:46 > 0:04:48Now, tell me, Carol, you're also retired.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50- I am.- So, how do you fill your time?

0:04:50 > 0:04:52I love walking, I like hill walking as well.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55We're a bit too similar to our opponents, you know.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58I do something for charity every year, so I have sky dived,

0:04:58 > 0:05:01I've zip wired, I've abseiled, I've done all kinds of things.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04But this year, I've got to fit 60 things in

0:05:04 > 0:05:05because I'm going to be 60 in November -

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and one of which was to try and appear on TV!

0:05:08 > 0:05:11- Dun-dun-duh!- Ta-dah! - Tick it off the list!

0:05:11 > 0:05:15But also, I had a message this morning from my friend, who said,

0:05:15 > 0:05:19"If I manage to get the word 'sausage' into the interview,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21"she would donate an extra £50."

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- So, sausage!- So, you say sausage.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- I say sausage.- Sausage?- Sausage. - Sausage?

0:05:26 > 0:05:28- Sausage.- I make that £250!

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Come on, cough up!

0:05:30 > 0:05:31Five sausages here!

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Oh, nice work, so, 60 for 60.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- 60 for 60.- And you're ticking them off the list, one by one.

0:05:36 > 0:05:37- I am, yes.- Fantastic.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Now, I'm going to give you more than £60,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42300 is what I'm going to give you.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44How do you think you're going to spend it?

0:05:44 > 0:05:46- Any tactics? - Don usually spends small.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Yeah, I usually spend small but I'm going to try and leave the expert

0:05:50 > 0:05:53- about a fiver.- Oh!

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Oh, they will not be pleased to hear that.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57But this is really great.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00We've got such fantastic teams on Bargain Hunt today.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Inspiring, enthusiastic people,

0:06:02 > 0:06:07who are just about to receive £300 each.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08Can you believe it?

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Tick that off your list! And your experts are waiting to meet you,

0:06:11 > 0:06:13so off you go and very good luck!

0:06:13 > 0:06:15- Thank you.- See you later.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17I love this. It's all girl power today.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19I think Don might be a bit outnumbered.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23Of course, the teams will have their experts lending a hand today.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Wheeling and dealing with the Reds, it's Ben Cooper.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Whilst hoping to shed some light on some bargains, it's Gary Pe.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Have you got any idea what you'd like to buy? Hannah?

0:06:34 > 0:06:35I've got no idea.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38We're just going to see what we like and hopefully find a bargain.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Oh, I'd love to find a little bit of jewellery.

0:06:40 > 0:06:41- Something...- Hmm, shiny!

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Yeah, shiny, gold, lots of colour.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47I'd like something shiny and sparkly, I'm like a magpie.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Well, if it's bronze and it's naked, I'm having it.

0:06:50 > 0:06:51Ooh, saucy!

0:06:51 > 0:06:54This is it, teams, your 60 minutes starts now!

0:06:54 > 0:06:56HOOTER

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Let's head out and see what we can find. Come on, girls.

0:06:58 > 0:06:59Well, now, let's go!

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Good luck, everyone.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03So...bronze.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05- Yeah, nude bronze.- Nude bronze.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- I mean, that's what we're looking for.- I haven't forgotten.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Let's have a look inside.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12- After you, ladies.- Thank you.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16So, whilst the Reds head inside, the Blues get down to business.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20What I like about it is it's got elements of different cultures

0:07:20 > 0:07:22from around the world.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Elements of Russia, even Egypt.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27- China.- China because of the lacquering.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29- Yeah.- What are we talking about here?

0:07:29 > 0:07:31- There's a price, isn't there?- Yes. - Yeah.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33- 225.- 225.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34Hmm...

0:07:34 > 0:07:36What would be your best on this?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Bearing in mind, it's our first look.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Your very first, yes.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43So, if we spend a lot, it means we won't have...

0:07:43 > 0:07:44Hmm... 125.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46125?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Could you do 100, do you think?

0:07:49 > 0:07:51- 110.- 110?- Yeah.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54What do you think it might sell for at auction?

0:07:54 > 0:07:55With me in it?

0:07:55 > 0:07:57ALL LAUGH

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Priceless, of course, Gary!

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- What are you thinking? - Let's put it this way,

0:08:01 > 0:08:03it's not very old.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06I mean, it's been repainted at some point...

0:08:06 > 0:08:07- Yeah.- ..in time.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10But the style is there.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13- What do you reckon?- But has it caught your attention?

0:08:13 > 0:08:15It's got our attention, yeah.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18So, as it's our first purchase, shall we...?

0:08:18 > 0:08:19- Keep it in the bag?- Reserve it?

0:08:19 > 0:08:22- A back burner?- Yeah. - Yeah, back burner.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Well, it's a positive start, Blues.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Let's see if the Reds are having any luck.

0:08:27 > 0:08:28Do you know anything about this?

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- What do you think it's for? - I think it's for the bathroom.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Well, close, it was actually for people's bedrooms.

0:08:34 > 0:08:35- Oh, OK.- Pre-plumbing.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Mm-hm.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41You'd have your jug of water, take in the bedroom and so then you could

0:08:41 > 0:08:46wash and do your evening cleansing and morning cleansing.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48How old is it?

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Actually, I don't think this one's got a lot of great age.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52- OK.- I mean, it's made in Staffordshire.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54When you look at it, it is...

0:08:54 > 0:08:56It's desperately clean.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58- Mm... It's too new. - It's too new.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02It was just made as a decorative object, and so, value wise,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05not that great. Not going to do very well at auction.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07- OK.- So, I would say, leave that.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Now, had it been a real period one from around about 1890,

0:09:10 > 0:09:12- then that's a different kettle of fish.- Yeah.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14With this one, you're looking at about 1990.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17- OK.- So...- 1990?

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- Yeah.- Wow, that's new!

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Never mind, team, that's why you have an expert.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Meanwhile, it's another spot for the Blues.

0:09:25 > 0:09:26- Oh...- What about that?

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- Oh, no.- No?- Not for me.

0:09:30 > 0:09:31Something from the Orient, no?

0:09:31 > 0:09:33- I like it.- Do you?

0:09:33 > 0:09:36- I do.- Well, this is where we have a full and frank discussion

0:09:36 > 0:09:37and then we do what she says.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Very diplomatic, Don.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41I do like it because people have it...

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Exactly, something from the Orient,

0:09:43 > 0:09:46pagoda-shaped, made out of bamboo.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49This kind of bird cage is very hard to find nowadays

0:09:49 > 0:09:51in these proportions.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53- There is something about it.- Yeah.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55I've seen people kind of have them as, you know,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57for interior decoration, standing in the corner of the room.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00- Exactly, yeah.- Can we leave that on the back burner, as well?

0:10:00 > 0:10:03- I think it's important that we find out the price.- Yeah.- OK.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06- It could sit in somebody's conservatory.- All right, yeah, OK.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09Can you not see it? How much is this?

0:10:09 > 0:10:12I was looking for around 55.

0:10:12 > 0:10:13What would be your best on it?

0:10:13 > 0:10:15What would be your absolute best?

0:10:16 > 0:10:20I'll take £10 off - 45.

0:10:20 > 0:10:21So, how old do you think it is?

0:10:21 > 0:10:24I've had it in my family for about 20 years.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27It's something probably that came out of the '60s.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29And would it have been made here?

0:10:29 > 0:10:31No, definitely Chinese.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35- What do you think? - Anyway we could squeeze you down...

0:10:35 > 0:10:36- just a little bit?- Could you do 35?

0:10:36 > 0:10:38I'll meet you in the middle, 40.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41- How about 39?- OK, 39!- 39.- 39!

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Is it good for you? It works for you?

0:10:44 > 0:10:45We can do that. Yeah, 39.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Great, first purchase. Thank you ever so much, thanks!

0:10:48 > 0:10:50You're welcome.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52What was that? You don't want it?

0:10:52 > 0:10:56As I said, full and frank discussion, to quote my old boss,

0:10:56 > 0:10:58full and frank discussion and then do what she says.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Of course! It's been like that for 30 years, why change?

0:11:05 > 0:11:09Well done, Blues. That's your first item bought in 15 minutes.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Even if you didn't have much say in that one, Don.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15Back with the Reds and some quality silver is on the table.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17I do like this hair thing with the flowers on it.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19That is lovely.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23So, the dealer's dated it to Birmingham, 1906,

0:11:23 > 0:11:25so coming towards the end of the Art Nouveau period,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28which is wonderful sort of fluid designs.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30And, of course, when you think back to photographs of the

0:11:30 > 0:11:32turn-of-the-century, or the last century,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35big hairstyles, all held up,

0:11:35 > 0:11:37so you've got a lot of hat pins and hair ornaments.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39So you've got your anchor for Birmingham,

0:11:39 > 0:11:42your lion passant - purity, the quality of the silver -

0:11:42 > 0:11:46and then you've got a letter at the end and that dates it to 1906.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I just think it's a nice thing. Sophia, you like it, don't you?

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- I do really like it. - You better have a look.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54I think Sophia wants it for herself.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- I do, yes.- Well, you can't buy it for yourself.

0:11:57 > 0:11:58It's handmade, isn't it?

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Yeah, absolutely. So, you'd have had a flat piece of silver,

0:12:01 > 0:12:03the design would have been pressed out,

0:12:03 > 0:12:06then it would have been shaped and twisted for the hair,

0:12:06 > 0:12:07the comb prongs,

0:12:07 > 0:12:10and then edging up there, you would find a design for the flowers.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13With an item like that, they would have produced others

0:12:13 > 0:12:15but no two would've been identical because

0:12:15 > 0:12:18of course you've got that nice bit of hand...

0:12:18 > 0:12:19- It's unique.- Yeah.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23How much do you think this would because it's priced at £68?

0:12:23 > 0:12:26I think it's probably not too far off for auction,

0:12:26 > 0:12:28probably be quite a wide estimate, say £40-£60.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31- Let's see what she says. - Shall we ask the question?

0:12:31 > 0:12:32I can do £60 on it.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Would you do £55?

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- I will, yes.- Brilliant, that's a deal. Thank you.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Well done, Reds, that one item in 25 minutes.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45But do remember, you're buying for profit, not yourselves.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49I see something here that might have a golden element to it.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Gold! Look at that colour!

0:12:51 > 0:12:54It's English in style.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56There's a bit of damage, though.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59- Quite a lot of damage there. - Yes, well, that's all right.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03- It looks like just a hairline crack. - What is it?

0:13:03 > 0:13:05It's a garden stool, basically.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08- Oh!- Or something to put a planter on.- Or a stand.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11What I like about this is the style,

0:13:11 > 0:13:16which derives from the aesthetic movement of the 1860s.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18No signature.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20A bit of damage on the foot.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22- That's fair enough. - It shows it's used, doesn't it?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24That's exactly, you would expect...

0:13:24 > 0:13:27I would be more worried if there was no damage at all.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- Yeah.- But it's certainly got the patination,

0:13:31 > 0:13:35the kind of crazing you would expect resulting from age.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- Yeah. I love the colour. - Shall we ask the price?

0:13:38 > 0:13:40- Yeah!- Do you like it?- Erm...

0:13:40 > 0:13:42I'm... I'm fluid...

0:13:42 > 0:13:43- You're fluid?- Fluid?

0:13:43 > 0:13:46All right. Maybe the price might convince you, I don't know.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48- OK.- Shall we ask?

0:13:48 > 0:13:50- So, who's going to ask this time? - Whose turn?

0:13:50 > 0:13:51What's your best on this, please?

0:13:51 > 0:13:5380 quid.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55- 80 quid.- Oh...

0:13:55 > 0:13:57That seems a little bit too punchy for me, that.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59I'd like to see it at 50.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01I don't know, I mean...

0:14:01 > 0:14:03- Well, I asked his best... - Hang on a moment.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Oh! Oh, all right, go on.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Now, this is where you don't argue with...

0:14:09 > 0:14:12So, as Carol goes in to beat down the price,

0:14:12 > 0:14:14it's a Bargain Hunt favourite for the Reds.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Moorcroft is wonderful quality, those lovely colours,

0:14:17 > 0:14:19and it's one of those things which is really popular.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- Mm-hm.- And generally does well at auction.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24I do like that little plate with the flower on it.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26- That little one just there? - Yeah, the yellow flower.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Do you like that?

0:14:28 > 0:14:30- No.- No.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33And is there anything, when you look around here, Hannah,

0:14:33 > 0:14:35that you do quite like the look of?

0:14:35 > 0:14:37I don't like the price of anything in here.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39How much is that plate?

0:14:39 > 0:14:43So, that one there is priced at £58.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45I don't think that's worth £58.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47- I think we could get them down to £40.- I would pay £10.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51- £10!- But, you see, it's Moorcroft. - It's a collectable.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53Quality always comes at a price.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55But if you're not sure, time to move on.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Now, how's Carol getting on with the garden stool?

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Any movement on that £80?

0:15:00 > 0:15:0257!

0:15:02 > 0:15:0357.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06- Yeah?- Yeah, go on, then!

0:15:06 > 0:15:08- Yes.- Yes!

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Carol, you realise...you match?

0:15:11 > 0:15:13I do, look at this!

0:15:13 > 0:15:14- Sit down on it.- OK.

0:15:14 > 0:15:15- There you go.- Oh!

0:15:15 > 0:15:18- Oh, careful.- Yes!

0:15:18 > 0:15:19Yay!

0:15:19 > 0:15:22So, the Blues are sitting pretty with that second purchase.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24Some brilliant negotiation skills, Carol.

0:15:24 > 0:15:2735 minutes in and time to leave the teams shopping

0:15:27 > 0:15:31whilst I put you in the picture with an interesting find.

0:15:37 > 0:15:38Here's a pretty still life.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42Now, it's from my personal collection and, not only that,

0:15:42 > 0:15:43it has a personal connection,

0:15:43 > 0:15:47but little did I know it when I bought the piece recently at auction.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49So, here's the story.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51I go into the auction house and I see a painting

0:15:51 > 0:15:54that I love and I hope you'll agree it's not hard to see why.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56The palate is beautiful,

0:15:56 > 0:15:59those cool oranges and blues.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01A touch of the Scottish colourists,

0:16:01 > 0:16:05who loved their compositions of fruit, ceramics and flowers.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09£100-£200 was the estimate and I was lucky,

0:16:09 > 0:16:11there seemed to be very little action

0:16:11 > 0:16:14when the auctioneer put it under the hammer

0:16:14 > 0:16:17and I got it for a mere £45!

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Now, what attracted me to this painting?

0:16:19 > 0:16:21Well, there was just something about it.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23I recognised the palate,

0:16:23 > 0:16:27I recognised the perspective and I just had to have it.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29But the frame was disastrous.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32It looked cramped and there was no slip and it just didn't work,

0:16:32 > 0:16:36so I get the painting home and off the frame comes.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39And the whole time that I've seen this painting hanging,

0:16:39 > 0:16:41there's just something about it that's bugging me.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43I know this painting.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46I know this artist but it's unsigned.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50Well, off comes the frame and what do I discover at the bottom?

0:16:50 > 0:16:53A signature that was obscured by the frame.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57Steen. S-T-E-E-N.

0:16:57 > 0:16:58And the penny drops.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00It may not be a name with which you're familiar

0:17:00 > 0:17:03but it's one with which I'm very familiar.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Ben Steen.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Now, he was a Scottish artist,

0:17:07 > 0:17:09didn't make huge waves in his career,

0:17:09 > 0:17:12but he was collected by one very important man -

0:17:12 > 0:17:14my father.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18So, I recognised his signature from other paintings in my household

0:17:18 > 0:17:21and thought, "Wow! How cool is that?

0:17:21 > 0:17:25"I've used my eye to pick out a picture that I recognise from my youth."

0:17:25 > 0:17:30Now, I'm so chuffed that I got a real bargain here for £45, where,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33I think, with this signature, had it not been obscured,

0:17:33 > 0:17:37the auction house might have catalogued it at £150-£250

0:17:37 > 0:17:42and I might well have been willing to pay in-between those two estimates, around £200.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44But the signature, obscured as it was,

0:17:44 > 0:17:47meant it was catalogued as unknown,

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Scottish school, early to mid-20th century.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53And once I get a new frame on this beautiful painting,

0:17:53 > 0:17:55I'll be so proud to hang it on my wall.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01With only 15 minutes left on the clock,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03the Blues have two items in the bag.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05The Reds, however, still have two items to find.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Time to step it up, teams.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09What's the plan?

0:18:09 > 0:18:10A bit more tricky than I thought

0:18:10 > 0:18:13- because there's so much to see, isn't there?- Yeah.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15- We want to win, don't we, Sophia? - Yeah, definitely.

0:18:15 > 0:18:16So, we're still looking for our...

0:18:16 > 0:18:18for our bargain.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20I'm definitely out for leaving Gary about three quid.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22- Well...- Something like that, a fiver.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Well, then we need to find the golden egg, don't we?

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Carol, what was the word you've been egged on to say?

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Sausage!

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Of course, sausage,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35that sounds like they owe you another £50 for charity.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Come on, Reds, you still have a load of lolly.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40What about this brolly?

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Sofia, does it pull up?

0:18:43 > 0:18:45It doesn't stay up.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- Shall I have a look at it?- Yeah.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49You've just got to treat it gently, I would've thought.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51- It's beautiful.- I like that.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53I feel like a fancy lady.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55Right, there is a clip up there.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56Oh, there we go, pop.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Well, this is Edwardian and the main thing is condition.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02It looks like it's silk and that rots in sunlight.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04We've got this lovely lacework.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06- I think it's lovely.- I like this.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08Is the handle the original handle?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11I should think that the handle has been repainted,

0:19:11 > 0:19:12it might be replaced.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14But let's see what the price is...

0:19:14 > 0:19:17£40. Well, use your charms.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19- We can always ask...- Time is short.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- Sofia?- What's the best deal you can do for us on this?

0:19:22 > 0:19:24Well, I have to make four on it

0:19:24 > 0:19:26but I'll do you a one-off, no haggling,

0:19:26 > 0:19:29- £30.- £30?

0:19:29 > 0:19:31- I think that's...- I think that's, that's a good deal.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33I think you've got to go for it. We are running out of time, girls,

0:19:33 > 0:19:36- because we're down to about ten minutes.- OK.- So, come on, girls.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38- Great!- Thank you.

0:19:38 > 0:19:39Nice one, Reds.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42So that leaves each of our teams with one item left to find.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Could this be promising for the Blues?

0:19:45 > 0:19:46- Oh...- What's it made of, then?

0:19:46 > 0:19:48It's some sort of composite stone.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52- Yeah.- Yeah.- It's got some sort of receptacle,

0:19:52 > 0:19:56so that tells me right away that it is also a fountain.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Carol, look behind the sculpture.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01OK.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02Oh!

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- Ah...- What? - It's got a signature on it.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07- It's got a signature.- Oh, right, yeah.- It's not that old,

0:20:07 > 0:20:09- but it's 1988.- 1988.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11IL that would...

0:20:11 > 0:20:12mean Illinois.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15- Oh, Illinois? Ah... - It's probably from America.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18- Yeah.- It's come a long way. - It's in good order, isn't it?

0:20:18 > 0:20:19It's in good order.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22And we've got our bits from the 1860s.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25We've got our bits from the 1950s, or even earlier.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27What's wrong with 1980?

0:20:27 > 0:20:29- Yeah.- Shall we ask the price?

0:20:29 > 0:20:30Yeah.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Sounds good, Gary.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34You get a price and we'll see if the Reds are any closer

0:20:34 > 0:20:36to sealing a deal.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38- I really like this. - You really like it?- Yeah.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Those lift up.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42Your book goes in the middle.

0:20:42 > 0:20:43But you have more books.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- Oh, that's really cool. - And it slides out.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48- And...- I would buy this for myself.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Remember, Hannah, you're not buying for yourself!

0:20:50 > 0:20:52The nice thing is, you see, it's Black Forest,

0:20:52 > 0:20:56Black Forest in Germany, and it's famed for its woodcarving.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00Just look at the delicacy here on the legs of the heron.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02You know, and the condition is wonderful.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05It's not been broken. It's not had a child play with it,

0:21:05 > 0:21:06just not understanding what it's for.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Any markings on the other side?

0:21:08 > 0:21:10No, it's just how it's made.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12How do you know it's Black Forest?

0:21:12 > 0:21:15It's the style. The style and the type of timber that's used.

0:21:15 > 0:21:16And...

0:21:16 > 0:21:18This is just... It is always...

0:21:18 > 0:21:20They come from the Black Forest, trust me.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23- I think it's a nice thing.- I really like it, but I don't like the price.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25- We're very short on time. Well... - It's £165.

0:21:25 > 0:21:27- I don't like the price.- Well...

0:21:27 > 0:21:31I've got to tell you that these always do do well at auction.

0:21:31 > 0:21:32We're short on time.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34- You do actually like it.- I love it.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37- And you did start off saying, "I want to buy something I like."- Yes.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Something you'd own.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43The best thing you can do is ask the dealer what his best price is

0:21:43 > 0:21:45and see how you do, but I think it's a good thing.

0:21:45 > 0:21:46OK.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48So, what is your best price?

0:21:48 > 0:21:50I'm looking for around 145 for it.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52Could you do 120?

0:21:52 > 0:21:54No, I can't do that, no.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56I'll go to 140.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58- What do you think, Sof?- 135?

0:21:58 > 0:22:00- 135?- Yeah, 135.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02- Oh, go on, then.- Oh, brilliant. - Oh, go on, then. Thank you.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Well, it's your third item bought.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07You've done it.

0:22:07 > 0:22:08There we go.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11Third and final item with five minutes left on the clock.

0:22:11 > 0:22:15Good work, Reds. Which just leaves the Blues in the balance.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17He's come down to 120.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18- Right.- OK.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20And?

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Can we not squeeze another tenner out here?

0:22:22 > 0:22:25- I just... It's just...- To be honest, that was the bottom line.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28I... The... I could do 119.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31- Well...- It's a little bit off,

0:22:31 > 0:22:34but it has been drastically reduced at that.

0:22:34 > 0:22:39This design here is designed to enhance the sound of water flowing.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41- Oh, yeah.- So it flows through the pipe and it obviously goes

0:22:41 > 0:22:43round and back on itself.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46And, as I say, it's all been designed to create

0:22:46 > 0:22:49the most atmosphere you can get...

0:22:49 > 0:22:52from what is a small water fountain.

0:22:52 > 0:22:53He's certainly selling it.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Would you go 115?

0:22:58 > 0:22:59- Go on, then.- Yes!

0:22:59 > 0:23:03- Thank you very much. - He's got a bargain!

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- Thank you.- Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

0:23:06 > 0:23:07HOOTER

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Oh, dear, teams. Looks like your time's up.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10One, two, three, done.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17Their first item was a silver hair comb.

0:23:17 > 0:23:18Price paid - £55.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Next up, there was nothing shady about this deal.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25The parasol cost them £30.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29And finally, the book slide set them back £135.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Well, Sofia, Hannah, well done.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34I was worried at the beginning there,

0:23:34 > 0:23:36but you took some decisive action

0:23:36 > 0:23:38and three items within the 60 minutes.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41Well done. Sofia, which is your favourite item?

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Probably the silver hair ornament.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45It's something that I would buy and wear myself,

0:23:45 > 0:23:48so I hope that somebody at the auction feels the same about it.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50But do you think it's going to bring the biggest profit?

0:23:50 > 0:23:52I can only hope so.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55Either that or the wooden book slide I think will bring the biggest.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58- Ah, that was Mum's choice, wasn't it?- Yeah, it was.

0:23:58 > 0:23:59Hannah, is the book slide your favourite?

0:23:59 > 0:24:02That's my favourite item, the Black Forest book slide.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05But it was your biggest splurge, so do you think it's going to bring a great profit?

0:24:05 > 0:24:07I would buy it.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Now, you've spent a good chunk.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12£220. I'm proud of you, ladies.

0:24:12 > 0:24:13But who's got £80?

0:24:13 > 0:24:17- I do.- OK, Sofia, I'll take it from you and I'll hand it to Ben.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19Not a huge amount, so do you have any ideas

0:24:19 > 0:24:21what you'll do with your budget?

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Well, I think I might see if I can find something suitably feminine

0:24:25 > 0:24:26for such wonderful ladies.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Oh, well, on that note,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31we'll leave Ben to find his feminine side and we'll remind ourselves what

0:24:31 > 0:24:33the Blue team bought.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37First up, the bamboo bird cage cost them £39.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41Their second item was a garden pottery stool.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Price paid - £57.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46And finally they got into the flow of things with a water feature.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48It cost them £115.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Well, Carol, Don, I think we can safely say, Carol,

0:24:53 > 0:24:55- you're still the boss.- I am.

0:24:55 > 0:24:56You drove that, didn't you?

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Now, tell me, of the three items that you bought, Carol,

0:24:59 > 0:25:01which is your favourite?

0:25:01 > 0:25:04I'm torn between two, but I think probably the fountain.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06- The fountain.- I just like the shape.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09- OK.- I was torn between that shape and the colour of...

0:25:09 > 0:25:11of the stool, so... But I think the fountain is my favourite.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13So probably your most modern purchase?

0:25:13 > 0:25:16- Yes.- OK, and do you think it's going to bring the biggest profit?

0:25:16 > 0:25:18- Cos I think it was your biggest splurge.- Biggest splurge.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20- No.- No, it's not?

0:25:20 > 0:25:23Looking back, I think maybe the bird cage will make the most profit.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25- OK, the bamboo bird cage.- Yeah.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28OK, and do you agree with that, Don? Biggest profit in the bird cage?

0:25:28 > 0:25:30I think... No, I don't think so.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32I think the fountain will be the biggest profit.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Really? It's going to be a showpiece at the auction.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37And which of the three is your favourite?

0:25:37 > 0:25:40- Definitely the fountain. - The fountain all round?

0:25:40 > 0:25:41- That's my...- OK, fantastic.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43Well, fingers crossed with the fountain.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46So, remind me, you spent 200 and...

0:25:46 > 0:25:47- 11.- £11.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49- You spent big.- We tried.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51- We tried.- I was desperate to leave him a fiver, but we couldn't...

0:25:51 > 0:25:54- Couldn't quite... - Get in there in time, so...

0:25:54 > 0:25:56So, 211 means £89 for Gary.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58- It does.- So I'll take it just now.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00- There you go.- Thank you very much.

0:26:00 > 0:26:01- Mr Pe.- Oh, well.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03What are you thinking?

0:26:03 > 0:26:04£89 in the bank.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06Well, I'm thinking...

0:26:06 > 0:26:09We've got something from China, something from Britain,

0:26:09 > 0:26:12something from America,

0:26:12 > 0:26:16so perhaps something from another country, perhaps another style.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Hmm, intriguing.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22So, while Gary goes global, it's time for us to head to the auction.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34We've arrived safely in Litchfield

0:26:34 > 0:26:36and I find myself in the company of Richard Winterton.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38Thank you for having us.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40It's a pleasure. Welcome to our cathedral city.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Yes, yes, yes, the famous cathedral of Litchfield,

0:26:42 > 0:26:45perhaps we will make some famous prices today.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47But it all depends on what they've bought,

0:26:47 > 0:26:50so let's start with Hannah and Sofia, with this hair clip.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54What do you think? Is it pretty enough to get the competition going?

0:26:54 > 0:26:56- I'm sure it will. - We've got 15 to 20.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59OK, well, the girls were taken by the fact that it's so pretty...

0:26:59 > 0:27:03- Yeah, OK.- It's pierced, it's older...- Yeah.- £55 they paid.

0:27:03 > 0:27:04It could well get to that.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07It has got the look. I could see someone paying some money for that.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10OK. Cool. Well, we're sticking with the Edwardian era, in fact,

0:27:10 > 0:27:14cos next up is our parasol, with a slightly dodgy handle.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17- Slightly?- OK, very dodgy handle.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Yeah. But that aside, it's got some age to it.

0:27:20 > 0:27:24I mean, it's the kind of thing a theatrical group might buy.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26- Yeah.- Something like that. A bit of am-dram about it.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28- Yeah.- OK, is it going to have a dramatic estimate?

0:27:28 > 0:27:31- We've got 20 to 30. - Well, the ladies paid 30.

0:27:31 > 0:27:32- OK.- So that's all right.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34- OK.- But in that case,

0:27:34 > 0:27:38it means that all hopes are probably pinned on this gorgeous Black Forest

0:27:38 > 0:27:40book slide. Let's open it up.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43Let's show it in all its glory because it is a gorgeous thing.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46Slightly earlier than our parasol and hair comb.

0:27:46 > 0:27:50It's Black Forest, that would have its following because it holds the

0:27:50 > 0:27:52books, that has its following.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55- Yeah, I love it.- What do you think it's going to make at auction?

0:27:55 > 0:27:58I think I'm being a bit mean and we've put 40 to 50,

0:27:58 > 0:28:01and I think it will probably get well above that

0:28:01 > 0:28:04- because it's a good quality thing. - OK.- Top end of that.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07So you say you hope it will get well above 50.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11We need it to make well above £135.

0:28:11 > 0:28:12- OK.- Is that too tall an order?

0:28:12 > 0:28:14I think so. It's all the money, that, isn't it?

0:28:14 > 0:28:16It's all the money. Well, in that case,

0:28:16 > 0:28:19let's find out what Ben bought as a bonus buy.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23Sofia, Hannah, I applaud you for spending so much at the fair,

0:28:23 > 0:28:27but maybe you are a bit nervous now because you only left Ben with £80.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30He wanted to buy you something super feminine to continue that theme.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33Ben, did you succeed on such a small budget?

0:28:33 > 0:28:34I think I did.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37A silver brooch.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39It's Scandinavian, which is very popular at the moment.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43Designed by Carl Ove, I think that's how you pronounce his name.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45- What do you think?- I like it.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47- I like it as well.- Cute and small.

0:28:47 > 0:28:51- And wearable.- It is. I think that's lovely.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54- Quite light though, are you sure it's silver?- Positive!

0:28:55 > 0:28:59Do you want to test it in the lab or will you be satisfied with the mark?

0:28:59 > 0:29:01You're holding it, you're examining it.

0:29:01 > 0:29:03Sofia, would you wear it, that's the question?

0:29:03 > 0:29:04I think I would.

0:29:04 > 0:29:06How much did you spend on it?

0:29:06 > 0:29:07What do you reckon?

0:29:07 > 0:29:08£20.

0:29:08 > 0:29:11- A bit more.- I think a bit higher than that, 50?

0:29:11 > 0:29:13- 38.- Oh, right, that's a reasonable amount.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15I think that's something we would consider.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18How much do you think we would make on it in the auction?

0:29:18 > 0:29:22I would like to see it go for in the region of £40 to £50.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25- It's a bargain.- Great.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I'm glad it's a bargain because that's what we're supposed to be hunting for. But, don't worry,

0:29:28 > 0:29:32it's not time to make your mind up about the brooch just yet but it is

0:29:32 > 0:29:35time to find out what Richard Winterton, our auctioneer,

0:29:35 > 0:29:36thinks of the brooch.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Well, we've had Edwardian silver,

0:29:39 > 0:29:42but here is slightly later 20th-century silver.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45Danish. We know the maker - Carl Ove.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48It's really pretty. Surely you're going to have lots of bidders for this?

0:29:48 > 0:29:50I think we will. Anything with Danish,

0:29:50 > 0:29:52they all get excited about it, don't they?

0:29:52 > 0:29:56So if you want a leaf brooch sitting on your lapel, then great.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59- For how much?- You'll think I'm being mean now at 15 to 20, won't you?

0:29:59 > 0:30:03I think you're being a wee tad mean because £38 was paid by Ben and I

0:30:03 > 0:30:05- think he's done quite well. - He has done well.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07To be fair, he has done well.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09We'll forgive you, we'll say you're not being mean,

0:30:09 > 0:30:11- it's just a come get me price.- Yes.- That's all it is.

0:30:11 > 0:30:13Well, the Blues, the competition,

0:30:13 > 0:30:16won't want the price to go too high, so let's see what they've got.

0:30:16 > 0:30:18We'll start off with their first item,

0:30:18 > 0:30:22this grand, bamboo, pagoda-style bird cage.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25Do you think your buyers will have a home for this?

0:30:26 > 0:30:28Are you lost for words?

0:30:28 > 0:30:29I am lost for words.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32Is that going to reflect positively or negatively in your estimate?

0:30:32 > 0:30:36- We've gone 20 to 30. - OK, well, the team paid £39.

0:30:36 > 0:30:37- OK.- So they've done all right.

0:30:37 > 0:30:41- Yeah.- You still look bamboozled by the bamboo.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43- It's one of those, isn't it? - Let's move on.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46Now we've still got some bamboo present,

0:30:46 > 0:30:50but this time in the form of pottery - our Minton garden stool.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53It's not in perfect condition but it's still a nice thing, isn't it?

0:30:53 > 0:30:55- It invokes an era.- It does and it's something that

0:30:55 > 0:30:59eight to ten years ago would have been doing well, wouldn't it?

0:30:59 > 0:31:02It would have had a nought on the end of what I'm going to tell you.

0:31:02 > 0:31:06We've got 20 to 30, but I think it would have been flying a few years ago.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08- Really? It has just fallen out of fashion?- It has, really.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12OK, the team paid £57 for it.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14OK. I'm not surprised.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16No, but you think it might be too much of an ask?

0:31:16 > 0:31:20- Yeah.- OK, so what about item number three?

0:31:20 > 0:31:23A slightly sort of Georgia O'Keeffe-esque

0:31:23 > 0:31:26water feature in the form of an orchid,

0:31:26 > 0:31:28concrete, modern.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32It's commercial. I'm quite sure people will like a water feature

0:31:32 > 0:31:33and it's got a bit more about it.

0:31:33 > 0:31:34Yeah, it's got half a chance.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37I think we'll certainly get one or two people after this.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39How much do you think they're going to spend?

0:31:39 > 0:31:41- We've got 30 to 40. - 30 to 40? OK, well,

0:31:41 > 0:31:45we need you to really psyche them up because they paid £115

0:31:45 > 0:31:48for said water feature.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50I don't know, I'm a bit worried for the Blues.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53We've got no great, exciting estimates for their items,

0:31:53 > 0:31:56so here's hoping that Gary has bought them a great

0:31:56 > 0:31:59and exciting bonus buy. Let's find out what it is.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04Don, Carol, you left Gary £89.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06You wanted to leave less, didn't you, Don?

0:32:06 > 0:32:08I would have liked to have left him with a fiver!

0:32:08 > 0:32:11Well, in that case, you were awfully generous with £89.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14But are you starting to wonder what's beneath those blue cloths?

0:32:14 > 0:32:16I think we can figure it out, can't we?

0:32:16 > 0:32:18Gary, show us what we all think is underneath there.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21Let me take you to the city of Vienna.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23- Oh.- Wow!

0:32:23 > 0:32:27The year's 1903 to about 1910,

0:32:27 > 0:32:31when the city was going through a bit of an artistic revolution -

0:32:31 > 0:32:33Viennese secession.

0:32:33 > 0:32:39A very famous architect, Josef Hoffmann, designed these chairs.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42Gary, you're doing a big build-up but they still look like pub chairs!

0:32:42 > 0:32:43LAUGHTER

0:32:43 > 0:32:48Exactly. The pub chairs of today took its inspiration from this.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50So, how much did you spend?

0:32:50 > 0:32:53- Guess.- I'd say about 50.

0:32:53 > 0:32:5530.

0:32:55 > 0:32:56I'm liking them a bit more.

0:32:56 > 0:32:59- I'm liking them a bit more.- So, what do you think they're going to make?

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Originals of this go for thousands.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05I think this is a reproduction for at least 100.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08Wow! Let's hope they do because

0:33:08 > 0:33:11at least we might make a profit on one thing!

0:33:12 > 0:33:14Well, you never know how it's going to go, Don.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18Don't be pessimistic and it sounds like Gary's got high hopes for these

0:33:18 > 0:33:21chairs. So let's find out if Richard Winterton, our auctioneer,

0:33:21 > 0:33:23has high hopes, too.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25So, to add to the Blues' collection,

0:33:25 > 0:33:29Gary has bought these chairs and do you think they're a pretty pair

0:33:29 > 0:33:30or are they pretty sad?

0:33:30 > 0:33:33I have to say, they don't float my boat tremendously.

0:33:33 > 0:33:36But they have a bit of style to them and I quite like that black lacquer.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38- Really?- Yeah, I do.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40So you quite like the chairs.

0:33:40 > 0:33:42Is that reflected in your estimate?

0:33:42 > 0:33:43- 20 to 30.- 20 to 30?

0:33:43 > 0:33:47Well, Gary has done quite well because he got the pair for £30.

0:33:47 > 0:33:51- OK.- So it's going to be all right but generally, overall,

0:33:51 > 0:33:52I'm quite worried for our teams today.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54- Are you nervous? - I'll have to work a bit.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Well, you've always got your work cut out as an auctioneer,

0:33:57 > 0:33:58so I'll wish you the best of luck.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Let's head straight to the sale to see how it all pans out.

0:34:01 > 0:34:02£50 I'm bid.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04£60 I'm bid.

0:34:04 > 0:34:05All done?

0:34:05 > 0:34:08Hannah, Sofia, can you feel the atmosphere?

0:34:08 > 0:34:10Can you feel the profits?

0:34:10 > 0:34:12Are they there to be made, do you reckon?

0:34:12 > 0:34:14Fingers crossed.

0:34:14 > 0:34:15You've gone very girlie.

0:34:15 > 0:34:19We're starting off with the extra girlie Edwardian silver hair comb.
