0:00:06 > 0:00:11..putting these enormous Victorian cogs into action

0:00:11 > 0:00:14and producing my own flour.

0:00:14 > 0:00:15But before all that,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19I'm off to an antiques fair on the island of Anglesey.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Will it be the Reds or will it be the Blues that make the most bread?

0:00:23 > 0:00:26So, let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:51 > 0:00:56Both of our teams have got £300 and one hour in which to buy three items

0:00:56 > 0:00:58that hopefully will return them a profit

0:00:58 > 0:01:00when they sell on at the auction.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Here's a taste of what's coming up.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07On today's show, the Reds have some unusual ideas about antiques.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Not for sucking boils, is it?

0:01:10 > 0:01:12THEY LAUGH

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Sucking boils?!

0:01:14 > 0:01:17The Blues are spoilt for choice.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20- Look at the big one. - Look at the medium-size one!

0:01:20 > 0:01:21- Wow!- Look at the leather one!

0:01:23 > 0:01:26And at the auction, will the Reds make the most profit...

0:01:26 > 0:01:27GAVEL BANGS

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Get in!

0:01:29 > 0:01:31..or will it be the Blues that come out on top?

0:01:31 > 0:01:32GAVEL BANGS

0:01:32 > 0:01:33- Yes!- Yes.

0:01:36 > 0:01:37But all that is coming up later.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39So let's meet today's teams.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43And for the Red team, we've got father and daughter Gwyn and Sian.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46And for the Blues, we've got husband and wife Rob and Katie.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Hello. ALL: Hello!

0:01:48 > 0:01:51So, Gwyn, I know that you're retired,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54but tell me a little bit about your previous job.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58My main job was being a policeman for the last 30 years, up to 1998.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02I ended up in a crime prevention office around the island here.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06And one of the nicest things I had happen to me there was, I had a

0:02:06 > 0:02:11youth crime prevention panel, and they won a major award down in London,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and I was presented by Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17which was a great achievement for these kids,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19which shows us not all kids are bad.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22So, Gwyn, how do you spend your retirement?

0:02:22 > 0:02:26I did run the, or was chairman of the local football club in the

0:02:26 > 0:02:31village down the road here called Gaerwen, and I did that for a number of years.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33And I like a bit of sea angling as well.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36- So never a dull moment?- Never a dull moment, always something to do.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Right. Sian, tell me a little bit more about your life.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43I'm a mum of three. I did have a hairdressing salon and I gave it up

0:02:43 > 0:02:45about 14, 15 years ago to become a mum.

0:02:45 > 0:02:50I've just gone back into it for the last year, and it's really,

0:02:50 > 0:02:52really busy. It's taken off really well.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Do you ever get any spare time? And if you do, how do you fill that?

0:02:54 > 0:02:56I think I'm following in his footsteps.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59I'm also chair of a local football club in Abergele.

0:02:59 > 0:03:05I also do like to bake, and I do my nan's traditional Bara brith recipe.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08And is it one of those things you spread with sort of butter, or...

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Well, I don't put butter on, but I must admit, everybody says,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16"It's lovely with butter, isn't it?" And when they say that, I'm like, "I have to have a piece with butter."

0:03:16 > 0:03:18And what about your antique knowledge?

0:03:18 > 0:03:20My... Ooh, minimal.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24Yeah. So what's the team plan? What's the tactics?

0:03:24 > 0:03:26My plan is to spend very, very...

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I'm a bit tight with the money.

0:03:28 > 0:03:29I'd probably spend high.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31- OK. All right.- Whoops!

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Well, hopefully you'll find a sort of a happy medium.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35- I'm sure we will.- Oh, we'll agree on something.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38- I'm sure we will.- Yeah, yeah. - So, good luck.- Thank you.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40I'm turning my attention to the Blue team, Rob and Katie.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43So, Rob, tell me, what do you do for a living?

0:03:43 > 0:03:47I work full-time as a youth pastor, so I work for a church in Liverpool.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49It depends on the day what I'm doing,

0:03:49 > 0:03:53so I can work in schools which can involve mentoring young people one-to-one,

0:03:53 > 0:03:55or working with different groups of young people,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58or perhaps on our premises running different youth clubs, perhaps.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01So, yeah, it's...very interesting.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03When it comes to sport, what's your game?

0:04:03 > 0:04:06- Football.- Yeah.- Yeah, so I'm a big Liverpool fan.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10So it pains me today to be wearing blue, but there we go.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11- What can you do?- Yeah.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13ERIC LAUGHS

0:04:13 > 0:04:16So, Katie, how do you fill the days?

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Well, I've got three, or we've got three beautiful girls,

0:04:18 > 0:04:21so they keep me busy. It's like a full-time job.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24But beside that, I actually work alongside Rob.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27But I actually do the children's work in our church, which, again,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30is just really, really busy, but it's great and I love it.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32What about spare time?

0:04:32 > 0:04:34- I mean, how do you fill that? - In my spare time, I love to sew,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37so I like to sew things from bunting and cushions.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41But it's a quite, quite a quick and unique way that I sew,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44so I can draw pictures on my sewing machine with a special needle.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48So I can applique camper vans and all sorts of things, so that looks really cool.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51What about the world of antiques?

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Yeah. Well, we wouldn't say we've got a lot of knowledge of

0:04:54 > 0:04:58antiques, to be honest with you, but we go to a lot of car-boot sales,

0:04:58 > 0:05:00a lot of charity shops,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and have filled our home with quite a few different things.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05- So, yeah.- What's the plan?

0:05:06 > 0:05:09We think maybe not spend too much.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- But then again...- Not too much, but if you see something...

0:05:11 > 0:05:14- That's right.- I don't know. If you see something, then you're

0:05:14 > 0:05:16like... But I think it's in between, isn't it?

0:05:16 > 0:05:17- Yeah, we'll see what happens.- Right.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21- OK. So before you can spend, you're going to need some money, aren't you?- Yeah.- Yes.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- So there you are, £300, Blue team.- Thank you.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27- Not to leave you out, Reds, there's your £300.- Thank you.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30So this is where you go off and you meet your relative experts.

0:05:30 > 0:05:31So I'll see you later.

0:05:31 > 0:05:32- Great. Thank you.- Thank you!

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Well, it strikes me that we've got two very evenly matched teams here

0:05:36 > 0:05:39today, so it could be that we're in for something of a close call.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45So, with £300 at the ready, all our teams need now are their experts.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Looking to snap up a profit for the Reds, it's...

0:05:52 > 0:05:55And just the ticket for the Blues, it's...

0:05:57 > 0:05:59So, Gwyn, what are we looking for today?

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Well, you know, Thomas, I'm looking for some old toys.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Something, people might say, "I had one of them at home."

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- Right.- And cuff links.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09- Something functional.- Silver.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11- Silver?- Trinket-y, Chinese-y.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15- Something small, a piece of jewellery or trinket-y.- OK.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Chinese, functional, silver, garden stuff. I don't know!

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Reds, Blues, your 60 minutes starts now.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25BIG GONG SOUND EFFECT

0:06:25 > 0:06:27- Let's go! - THEY LAUGH

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- Let's go.- Let's go. - THEY LAUGH

0:06:29 > 0:06:31With shopping lists that long,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33it's a good thing that this antiques fair

0:06:33 > 0:06:37has over 250 stalls and plenty to choose from.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40And Gwyn is already on the hunt for the cuff links.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Why the cuff link obsession?

0:06:42 > 0:06:47I bought a pair for £3 in a charity shop...

0:06:47 > 0:06:48THOMAS LAUGHS

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- ..and I've seen them on Bargain Hunt for £60.- Go, let's go.- Does this happen all the time?

0:06:52 > 0:06:56I think Sian has heard this story a thousand times before, Thomas.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Meanwhile, the Blues aren't hanging around.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01They've already started the hunt for their silver item.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Are these sugar things?

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Sugar nips, or sugar tongs.

0:07:05 > 0:07:06- Oh, yeah, OK.- Ooh!- Yes.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Now those are very decorative, aren't they?

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Now, where's the...? There's the silver mark.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- How much are they?- 35.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19- Little bit steep.- Little bit steep.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23- So, something to think about? - I think so, we know it's here. - Should we think about it, yeah?

0:07:23 > 0:07:27- Yes.- I think we should.- I mean, it's early days, isn't it?- It is early days.- I think so.- Yeah.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28The first minute!

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Caroline's right, Blues, you've still got plenty of time.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33It's great to see such eager teams.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38Now, has Gwyn found something he's willing to splash out on?

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Yeah, I quite like the fountain.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41- So do I.- Do you like the fountain?

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- Not really, no.- No, it's not quite your cup of tea.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46No, I'm after a bit more blingy.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48I don't think Gwyn's listening to you, Sian.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50How much have we got on the...

0:07:51 > 0:07:52..fountain, please?

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- I'll take...- It's got a bit of damage on the top.

0:07:55 > 0:07:56- It's broken there.- I'll take 20.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Take 20, and that'll be rock-bottom.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Could you go down to 15?

0:08:01 > 0:08:03No. ERIC: Oh, Sian's not impressed.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04In between?

0:08:05 > 0:08:08- 18.- Oh...!

0:08:08 > 0:08:1018?

0:08:10 > 0:08:11Your call.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13What do you mean, it's our call?!

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- Well, we've only just started. - You're in this together!- Deal, deal.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19- Look at him, he's just...- Oh!- Deal!

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Thank you. ERIC: Too late, Sian - Dad's called it.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23A steal, £18.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26- Thank you very much.- £18. That's nothing, isn't it?

0:08:26 > 0:08:27£18 for your fountain.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32- First item down.- Fantastic. - Let's move on.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36- I don't think I'm going to let him be in charge of anything now.- No!

0:08:36 > 0:08:40Well done, Reds. One item in the bag and only three minutes gone.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41But no time to rest,

0:08:41 > 0:08:45and the Blues are still looking for that piece of silver.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Oh, wow! That's a bit...

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Is that silver or is that plated?

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- No, it's...- It's not.- No, it's not.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56- It's not silver, it's not plated. - Looks like a...

0:08:56 > 0:08:58- It's not very good.- No.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Very diplomatic, Caroline.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03So Rob and Katie's silver hunt continues,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05whilst the Reds don't seem to be slowing down.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10So, I quite like these decorative tins.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12- I agree.- And these are German.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15And after the war, there was a bit of rationing in Germany,

0:09:15 > 0:09:17as well as in Britain.

0:09:17 > 0:09:22You'd make a big cake, you put it in your tin, a quantity of cakes,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24and then you'd lock it up for the week.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Perfect for a baker like Sian.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28I need this in my house.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- Do you?- My daughter just keeps raiding the Bara brith.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32All the tops have gone.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34- The Bara brith?- The Bara brith. - What's that?

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Welsh fruitcake.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38And do you feed the fruitcake?

0:09:38 > 0:09:40- No.- You don't sort of constantly put things on it?

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Sometimes at Christmas, I might...

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- Yeah, feed it with a bit of... - ..add a little bit of sherry, or...

0:09:45 > 0:09:46- ..bit of sherry.- Yeah.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48But this has got all the German national costumes

0:09:48 > 0:09:51of the various areas and regions.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54I like that, actually.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56And there's another one here with...

0:09:56 > 0:09:58..which is, um, very, sort of,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01in the manner of Tyrolean painted furniture.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04- There was a key on that one, wasn't there?- This is a key?

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- That's a key one.- No, no, no. - That's a key one.- There's a key.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09And, look, there's another a wooden one there, with another painted...

0:10:09 > 0:10:10I quite like that one as well.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13I think we want to inquire about these, don't you?

0:10:13 > 0:10:14I think so. Yeah.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15So, sir, tell me.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17How much are all three?

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Well, I normally do £20 a piece.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22- Yes.- So would 45 for the three be acceptable?

0:10:22 > 0:10:2435?

0:10:24 > 0:10:25£30, then.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29- I can't do 30.- Ooh!- He's so naughty, your daddy, isn't he?

0:10:29 > 0:10:31But do you know what, I'd... 35, I think.

0:10:31 > 0:10:32I'll do 35, that's not a problem.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36Would you meet us halfway between the 30 and then the 35, on £32?

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Well, shall we say 33?- £33.

0:10:38 > 0:10:39Then it's £11 each.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- I like that.- I like that.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- I'm happy as well.- You're happy with that?- I am very happy with that.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47- God, you're tight!- I know I am! - He is, isn't he?!- You're tight!

0:10:47 > 0:10:48HE LAUGHS

0:10:48 > 0:10:50I've never met anybody so mean!

0:10:50 > 0:10:52ALL LAUGH

0:10:52 > 0:10:54- Can we shake at...- £100.- ..at 33?

0:10:54 > 0:10:56- So wonderful.- Lovely. Thank you.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59They may be thrifty, Thomas, but they're also fast.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02That's the second item bought with only ten minutes gone.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Piece of cake!

0:11:04 > 0:11:08But what's this? Have the Blues spotted the functional item Rob had

0:11:08 > 0:11:09on his shopping list?

0:11:09 > 0:11:10I love this.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- Oh!- Do you know, I like that, too? - Yeah.- I love it.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Oh, good. Now, what do you like about it?

0:11:17 > 0:11:19I just like it cos it's really quirky.

0:11:19 > 0:11:20Yeah, it's quite different.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22And I actually would have that on our fireplace.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- I would buy that!- Would you polish it, or would you get Rob to?

0:11:25 > 0:11:27- I wouldn't polish it. I quite like it the way it is.- What's polish?!

0:11:27 > 0:11:28Excuse me!

0:11:28 > 0:11:31It's lovely. It's an arts and craft design.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33You see these lovely copper...

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- Oh, I love it.- Yeah.- ..rivets here.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- I love it.- That is beautiful, and this hammered effect.- Love it.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Would you give 25?

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- "Would you give 25?!" - Would you take 25?

0:11:44 > 0:11:48- No. That's a no for that, I'm afraid.- OK.- 39.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Ooh, I don't know.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52- It's a gorgeous piece. - It's gorgeous.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54- It's a nice piece.- It's nice. - It is nice.

0:11:54 > 0:11:55It's very unusual.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- It is, it is unusual.- But is it...

0:11:57 > 0:12:00I think it would be better if it was, if you'd stuck at the 30

0:12:00 > 0:12:03- without adding the nine to it.- 30!

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- I can't.- No?- You can't?- I can't.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10- The lowest I can go to is 37 and that's it.- Yeah.- 37.- 37.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13- Ooh!- What do you think, what do you think?- Shall we do it? I really like it.

0:12:13 > 0:12:14- Go on.- Do you really like it? - Yes. I love it!

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- Good.- Brilliant!- Thank you. Thank you.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Phew! That negotiation nearly went off the boil.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24Well done, Blues. First item down after 21 minutes.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Back with the Reds,

0:12:26 > 0:12:30and there seems to be disagreements over the team's spending tactics.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Well, I think you want a piece of jewellery.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Well, I think I'd like something, yeah.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36We don't want to spend too much, you know.

0:12:36 > 0:12:37Oh, we've not spent much at all!

0:12:37 > 0:12:40- Honestly!- Nice cheap pair of cuff links.

0:12:40 > 0:12:45- No, ring.- Nine carat gold for about a fiver.- Hmm, bit of bling

0:12:45 > 0:12:48- or a little trinket-y something. - What planet are you on, Gwyn?!

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Has been done, has been done.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52We sort of... Yeah. We need something...

0:12:52 > 0:12:53I think we do, I think we do.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55- ..blingy.- Let's go inside.- Let's go.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58- I'm afraid...- And leave you with a pound, then? Will that be all right?

0:12:58 > 0:13:00- That's perfect, I like that. Come on. - GWYN LAUGHS

0:13:00 > 0:13:02That's decided, then.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06Time for the Reds to retire inside and start spending big.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10Still outside, the Blues' search for silver is proving a little testing.

0:13:10 > 0:13:15This one is a little scent bottle, smelling salt bottle,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17but there's a silver lid on it...

0:13:17 > 0:13:20- Yeah.- ..and glass base. I mean, people collect those still.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22- Mmm.- But it's been damaged.

0:13:22 > 0:13:23Has it got the silver mark on there?

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Yes. I believe so, I believe it's the S. Is that right?

0:13:26 > 0:13:29- So, has it got the lion?- Yes.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31And what is the town mark?

0:13:31 > 0:13:33- I'm testing you here.- London?

0:13:33 > 0:13:35- Oh, gosh.- You haven't looked at it!

0:13:35 > 0:13:37- Oh!- No! You're not guessing!

0:13:40 > 0:13:42You've got your hands full today, Caroline.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45So the search for the silver continues.

0:13:45 > 0:13:50Inside, Thomas is also quizzing the Reds about their antiques knowledge.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54- What do you think that is?- No idea.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57If I do that, does that give you any clue?

0:13:57 > 0:13:59It's not for sucking boils, is it?

0:14:00 > 0:14:04- What are you saying, for sucking boils?- Dear me. Cuff links, sucking boils...

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I mean, honestly, cuff links, sucking boils?!

0:14:07 > 0:14:11- Something to do with smoke? - No.- No!- It's a toddy.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15- Oh!- Put it into a decanter or a bottle or a quantity of liquid.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17- Oh.- Yeah, it fills up...

0:14:17 > 0:14:19HE IMITATES LIQUID GLUGGING

0:14:19 > 0:14:22..over the glass, out it comes.

0:14:22 > 0:14:23- Interesting.- Never seen one.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26It's in...

0:14:26 > 0:14:28lead crystal,

0:14:28 > 0:14:34made in this country about 1820.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37Hand-blown, quite a stylish thing.

0:14:37 > 0:14:38I love the rings on here.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Just a proper antique.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42So how much have you got on the toddy measure?

0:14:42 > 0:14:47- 100.- Do you think we could sort of bend you a little bit more?

0:14:47 > 0:14:48Ratchet you a little bit more?

0:14:48 > 0:14:49To £90.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51£90.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53Now, one caveat.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55All of that...

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Is it going to make a profit at auction?

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- It's a gamble.- It is a big gamble.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01It's a proper antique.

0:15:01 > 0:15:0385? Can you come another fiver?

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Worth a try, Gwyn.

0:15:05 > 0:15:06- It is an auction, and... - Go on, then.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Go on, then! 85.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10- Shall we go for it?- Do you want to go for it?- Shall we?

0:15:10 > 0:15:14- Yes, yes.- Yeah?- We will.- Positive? - Thank you.- Oh, my God!

0:15:14 > 0:15:16A big spend from Gwyn,

0:15:16 > 0:15:20and that's the third and final item bought, all in 27 minutes.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22I cannot quite believe it, that we've got you

0:15:22 > 0:15:24to spend £85 on an antique.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26- It's amazing.- So I'm going to put that down.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28- Third and final item bought.- Yes. - Yeah.

0:15:28 > 0:15:29Time for a cup of tea.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- Marvellous.- Outside?- Spot on.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33On you go, well done.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Whilst the Reds head off for a cuppa,

0:15:35 > 0:15:38the Blues are still sifting through the silver,

0:15:38 > 0:15:39looking for their second item.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Now, that one, it goes with salts, doesn't it?

0:15:43 > 0:15:45There's four salts.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47- Is that right?- That's right, yeah. - And the mustard.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49- Oh, OK.- And how much are they?

0:15:49 > 0:15:51- For the lot?- Yeah.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54I could do 90 quid on them.

0:15:54 > 0:15:55- Right. 90 quid.- Ooh!

0:15:55 > 0:15:58ERIC: That's a lot of silver for your money, Blues.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00But Katie's only just got started.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02What is your, like, what is your

0:16:02 > 0:16:05best, like, bottom, bottom...

0:16:05 > 0:16:06LAUGHTER

0:16:06 > 0:16:09- Bottom!- 75.

0:16:09 > 0:16:10- 75.- How's that?

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Ooh, I don't know.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14- You don't think so? - No, I don't think so.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16- Not for the five.- Not for the five.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Is Katie ready to walk away from this?

0:16:19 > 0:16:20DEALER: Tell you how I'll do it,

0:16:20 > 0:16:22I'll do 60 quid, and that's best, right?

0:16:22 > 0:16:25- Ooh!- That's going to give you a fair chance.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28It's certainly silver, and as we would want it.

0:16:28 > 0:16:29Have a look at the mark, yeah.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31- It's definitely silver.- Yeah.

0:16:31 > 0:16:35- And there's the spoon, is the spoon silver?- Oh, yeah.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Yeah. Now, that's a mustard spoon,

0:16:37 > 0:16:39and a mustard spoon has an elongated bowl.

0:16:39 > 0:16:43- And the salt spoons have a round... - Right.- ..bowl.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45So that's how you know it's a mustard one.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Would you take 50?

0:16:47 > 0:16:49No, I can't. I've gone down to 60.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51- Yeah.- 60's me best, I'm afraid.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54- Your call.- What do you think?

0:16:54 > 0:16:55Your call, what do you think?

0:16:55 > 0:16:58I'm stepping out of this. I...

0:16:58 > 0:16:59Meet me halfway.

0:16:59 > 0:17:00- 55.- 55.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04- Oh, I don't know! Do you think... - Can't help you here.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Is it, is it, is it...

0:17:06 > 0:17:10- 53 and we're done.- 53.- Go on, then, 53.- Oh!

0:17:10 > 0:17:12- Oh!- Yes!- Well done!

0:17:12 > 0:17:14Oh, thank you.

0:17:14 > 0:17:15That is great.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17Nice bartering there, Blues.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21That's just secured your second item and your search for silver in one

0:17:21 > 0:17:26move. Two down, one to go, and 25 minutes still to spare.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32Meanwhile, Thomas and the Reds are having a catch-up over a cuppa.

0:17:32 > 0:17:33I'm pleased about that last one.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37- You like it, do you?- I thought that was funny.- It's funny, isn't it?

0:17:37 > 0:17:40- I can't believe we got you to spend some money!- I know!

0:17:40 > 0:17:41Well, well done, team.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44- Yeah, brilliant.- I think you've bought very well.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46I think those Blues are going to be worried.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49So here's to the downfall in Blues.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51- Cheers!- And to the experts, cheers.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53- Oh, no, I don't know about that! - Cheers.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56Whilst the Reds have time to sit around and chat,

0:17:56 > 0:17:59are Rob and Katie any closer to that final item?

0:17:59 > 0:18:00Rob likes chairs.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03Why, cos you sits down a lot? My husband does that.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05- I just think there's something about them.- Mmm.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08What do you mean, there's something about them?

0:18:08 > 0:18:10- Just...- That is a lovely chair.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11- That is a nice chair.- Just think,

0:18:11 > 0:18:14- who's sat in that chair? Whose house has it been in?- Rob, sit down.

0:18:14 > 0:18:15HE LAUGHS

0:18:15 > 0:18:18- Try it out.- Rob's sat in that chair.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19Is it good?

0:18:19 > 0:18:23- Well, one collapsed underneath me a few months ago, so...- No!- Yeah.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26- Just completely, just went... - No!- I know. It was funny.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Is that chair still all right, then?

0:18:28 > 0:18:32- It's been recently revarnished, I would say.- Yeah.

0:18:32 > 0:18:33Looks a little bit shiny.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35- Yes.- Yeah. I don't know.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38And that looks like to me like a polyurethane varnish.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40- Yeah, I don't...- It's a shame. - It is a shame.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42- I would rather it be waxed. - I don't like it.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43It hasn't got a good pattern.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46- Let's go, I don't like it. - What about riding boots, do you like these?

0:18:46 > 0:18:47No, I don't like horses.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49You don't like horses? What's wrong with horses?

0:18:49 > 0:18:53They're all right to look at, and I'm not a great horse rider.

0:18:53 > 0:18:58- OK.- No!- So it's a no to the riding boots.- No to the riding boots.

0:18:58 > 0:19:02Oh, dear, the clock is starting to go up away from you now, Blues.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04Time to saddle up and head indoors.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Oh, that's lovely.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10- With the wooden strapping. - Look at the small one, as well!

0:19:10 > 0:19:12- Aw.- Look at the big one.- Oh, gosh.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15- Look at the medium-size one! - Look at the leather one.- Wow!

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Look at that one, that one's got, like, a...

0:19:17 > 0:19:18Initials, somebody's initials.

0:19:18 > 0:19:23A lot of people use these now as coffee tables, with the flat tops.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25These with the wooden strapping,

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- people tend to put a glass top on... - Right.- Right.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29..onto those.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Thing is, it looks good.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33- It looks fantastic.- It's functional. - And it's functional,

0:19:33 > 0:19:35which is what you wanted, isn't it?

0:19:35 > 0:19:37And it'll have an age to it as well, presumably.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40It has got an age. That will be Edwardian, I would think.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43- Oh, wow!- Maybe up to 1920.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46- How much is it?- Say 85.

0:19:46 > 0:19:47- How much?- 85.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51- Ooh! Could we get it for 50?- It's rich, dark and a bit expensive.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54So, could this be the Blues' third item?

0:19:54 > 0:19:57It's all down to Caroline's negotiating skills.

0:20:00 > 0:20:01So, what's he said?

0:20:01 > 0:20:05He's said... Well, there was a bit of a domestic going on because he said one thing,

0:20:05 > 0:20:06- his wife said another thing. - Oh, right.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10But he's he won the day and he said 60.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13- BOTH: OK.- Do you think we could get him down to 55?

0:20:13 > 0:20:14- Shall I go and ask him?- Go on.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17£55 would be a huge discount.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19So, can Katie pull it off?

0:20:20 > 0:20:24- 50.- No, no, no.- 55?

0:20:24 > 0:20:25No, definitely not.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- 59.- OK, 59.

0:20:28 > 0:20:29Yes! Oh, great.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Thank you.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34Nice work, Katie. Every pound counts on Bargain Hunt.

0:20:34 > 0:20:35- I did it.- You did what?

0:20:35 > 0:20:37- I did it for 59, £59.- 59?

0:20:37 > 0:20:40- Yeah, 59.- You mean you've done it already?

0:20:40 > 0:20:42KATIE LAUGHS

0:20:42 > 0:20:44- That's it, then?- Yes.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49That's it, Rob. So, with both teams finished early, I'm calling time.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57Gwyn and Sian got the stone fountain for £18.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Then the three 1950s German cake tins for £33.

0:21:06 > 0:21:11And finally, the Regency glass toddy measure for £85.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14So, Thomas, I mean, almost at the speed of sound, these two.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16It was really at the speed of sound!

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Brilliant, utterly brilliant.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22So, Gwyn, what was your favourite item today?

0:21:22 > 0:21:25My favourite was the first one in,

0:21:25 > 0:21:27the boy and fish fountain.

0:21:27 > 0:21:28And a good deal as well.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31- Yeah.- Yeah.- What's the one item that's going to give you the biggest

0:21:31 > 0:21:34- profit?- I think it's going to be the fountain.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37- Do you?- I think so.- OK, strength in your own convictions there.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39- That's right.- OK. What about you, Sian?

0:21:39 > 0:21:42How do you see things panning out when it comes to your favourite item?

0:21:42 > 0:21:46Well, my favourite, I think I'm sort of going for the one we got second, really,

0:21:46 > 0:21:50which are the cake tins with the locks on.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52And what about the biggest profit, though? Come on.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Well, I do think that may be our cheeky little last one.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58- My...- It's a toddy lifter. - Oh, right.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Oh, quite rare, quite rare.

0:22:00 > 0:22:01So, are you happy with your spend?

0:22:01 > 0:22:03- Very happy. - And how much was that spend?

0:22:03 > 0:22:05- Total of 136.- 136.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07So you're going to hand over to me...

0:22:07 > 0:22:11- 164.- ..164. There we go.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14- Doesn't stay in my hand for very long. It goes over to Thomas.- Thank you.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Thomas, £164.

0:22:16 > 0:22:17That's a tidy sum, isn't it?

0:22:17 > 0:22:18It is a tidy sum,

0:22:18 > 0:22:24and I think we will be investing it in something which you really wanted

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- but we didn't manage to get.- A bit of bling.- A bit of bling.- Ooh!- OK.

0:22:27 > 0:22:32Well, while Thomas goes off to find that bit of bling as a bonus buy,

0:22:32 > 0:22:35let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38Rob and Katie purchased the arts and crafts copper kettle for £37.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44They secured the silver salts and mustard pot for £53...

0:22:47 > 0:22:51..and spent £59 on the suitcase as their final buy.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56So, Caroline, it was going quite swimmingly well, wasn't it?

0:22:56 > 0:22:58It was indeed,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02until Katie went off and decided to do the final negotiation on the last

0:23:02 > 0:23:07item all by herself, without sharing it with Rob.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08Oh, I see.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12- But tell me, Rob, what was your favourite item today?- I think it would have to be the case.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15- The case.- Yes. The suitcase. I really like that.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17So some useful haggling going on there, yeah.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19- Yeah, I think so.- Oh, no!

0:23:19 > 0:23:21ALL LAUGH

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Well, despite that being your favourite,

0:23:23 > 0:23:26which of the three do think is going to give you the biggest profit?

0:23:26 > 0:23:29- I think the case.- Yeah?- Yeah, I like the suitcase, as well.

0:23:29 > 0:23:30- You do?- Yeah, yeah.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34So Katie, you agree on the case being the one that's going to give you the biggest profit?

0:23:34 > 0:23:36- Yes.- But what was your favourite item?

0:23:36 > 0:23:39My favourite item was the copper kettle.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41- Oh, yes.- Very, very quirky.

0:23:41 > 0:23:42Just love it.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45Just really big and bulky and...

0:23:45 > 0:23:46- Tactile.- Yeah.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48I really liked it, really liked it.

0:23:48 > 0:23:49So what was the big spend today?

0:23:49 > 0:23:51£149.

0:23:51 > 0:23:56So you're going to cross my palm with £151, yes?

0:23:56 > 0:23:57- There we go.- OK.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00- Caroline...- Thank you. - ..£151 for a bonus buy.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04- Ooh!- Excited?- I am!

0:24:04 > 0:24:07- What are you going to buy? - Ooh, you'll have to wait and see.

0:24:07 > 0:24:13OK. Well, while Caroline makes up her mind on the bonus buy,

0:24:13 > 0:24:16I'm off to a place of some great interest.

0:24:22 > 0:24:26Today, I've headed over the Welsh border to Bunbury Mill in Cheshire,

0:24:26 > 0:24:29to unearth the story behind this beautifully renovated water mill.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33Situated close to the banks of the River Gowy,

0:24:33 > 0:24:37this restored mill has milled most things from animal feed to flour,

0:24:37 > 0:24:40and is one of only two working mills on the river.

0:24:43 > 0:24:47This agriculturally rich area of Cheshire has a long history of milling,

0:24:47 > 0:24:50dating back over 1,000 years.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54In its heyday, the banks of the River Gowy were home to an estimated

0:24:54 > 0:24:5620 water mills.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00But over time, changes in agriculture, production processes,

0:25:00 > 0:25:02and the arrival of cheaper foreign imports

0:25:02 > 0:25:05saw the industry fall into decline.

0:25:05 > 0:25:10And when a flood destroyed this mill in 1960, sadly, production stopped.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12But it wasn't for long.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16But over 50 years on, and the mill is still operational

0:25:16 > 0:25:18thanks to the efforts of local people,

0:25:18 > 0:25:23and in particular those members of the Bunbury Water Mill Trust.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26And I'm here to meet one of the leading volunteers, Peter.

0:25:26 > 0:25:27Lovely to meet you.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29You too, Eric. Nice to have you here.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Tell me a little bit about how you've managed to restore

0:25:32 > 0:25:34this remarkable water mill.

0:25:34 > 0:25:39In 1960, there was a massive flood here that put the mill out of action

0:25:39 > 0:25:41and it was going to be demolished.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42But in the 1970s,

0:25:42 > 0:25:47the local people in Bunbury persuaded North West Water to set up

0:25:47 > 0:25:51a job creation scheme and restore it to working order again.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55They did that. In 1977, it was opened as a heritage museum,

0:25:55 > 0:26:00which it still is. And then later on in 2009, it was again closed down,

0:26:00 > 0:26:02with no prospects for the future.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04And, at that stage,

0:26:04 > 0:26:09the local people again formed the Bunbury Water Mill Trust to operate

0:26:09 > 0:26:13and run the mill and make it available to the public, with a team of volunteers.

0:26:13 > 0:26:14Fascinating stuff, Peter.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18- I'm keen to see what's going on in here.- Great. - So I'll follow you.- Come on!

0:26:26 > 0:26:28So, this is where it all starts.

0:26:28 > 0:26:29And this is the...

0:26:29 > 0:26:31enormous wheel.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35That's right, Eric. It actually weighs about ten tonnes.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37There isn't very much water in the River Gowy,

0:26:37 > 0:26:41it's only a little stream, so this is an overshot wheel.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45The water comes in at the top and it's not the force of the water that

0:26:45 > 0:26:46drives the wheel around,

0:26:46 > 0:26:49it's the weight of the water that fills the buckets

0:26:49 > 0:26:51that takes it around.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54The wheel is basically cast iron, but has got timber buckets on it.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58There are 36 buckets, each made with three planks of wood.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01But that will generate 16 horsepower, so we're told.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03But I notice one thing.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Erm... It's not moving.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07Well, no, cos the water's been turned off.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09- Do you want to start it? - I'd love to!

0:27:09 > 0:27:11- Yes!- Right, here you are, then.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17Isn't that wonderful?

0:27:18 > 0:27:23- So what happens next?- Well, let's go and have a look at the actual mill stones over here.- OK.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25- Here we are.- Oh, right.

0:27:30 > 0:27:31So, what's happening here?

0:27:31 > 0:27:35The grain goes into the hopper here, you can put some in if you like.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37- Here we go.- OK.- There we are.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39Into the hopper.

0:27:39 > 0:27:45- That's it, lovely. And then the grain trickles down this sloping shoe...- Yeah.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48It goes into the eye in the centre of the wheel,

0:27:48 > 0:27:50and the flour works its way out.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52The flour comes to the outside.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54- You can see the flour down there. - I can see it.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57And the flour goes down a chute, over the back here down to

0:27:57 > 0:27:59the basement where it goes into the flour sack.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02- OK. So can we go down and have a look at that?- Sure, across here.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04OK.

0:28:11 > 0:28:15The water wheel is behind the big white wall behind me, so you can't see it from down here,

0:28:15 > 0:28:18but it drives all this gearing that

0:28:18 > 0:28:20eventually drives the shaft that

0:28:20 > 0:28:23goes up through the floor here, and that's driving the millstone.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25And it's going round faster than the water wheel is.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27- Oh, right. So, having poured all the grain in...- Yeah?

0:28:27 > 0:28:30..it's now coming out here as ground flour.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32- That's right, that's the flour that you've made.- Really?!

0:28:32 > 0:28:36- Let's have a...- Have a feel of it and smell it.

0:28:36 > 0:28:37Very distinctive, isn't it?

0:28:37 > 0:28:39Yes, it is.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41So, with the milling completed,

0:28:41 > 0:28:44all that's left to do is to winch the sack of flour up to the top

0:28:44 > 0:28:47floor, ready to be turned into bread.

0:28:56 > 0:28:57- Great!- Whoa!

0:28:57 > 0:29:00- So there it is, the finished product.- There it is.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Ready for delivery to the local baker.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05Wonderful. Peter, thank you so much for everything.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07It's fascinating stuff.

0:29:07 > 0:29:12Well, let's now see if our teams can bag a profit at the auction.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20Today's sale is in Nantwich, where I'm meeting auctioneer Chris Large.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Let's get down to business.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25Let's talk about the Red team, which is Gwyn and Sian.

0:29:25 > 0:29:32And their first object is this sort of composition stone fountain.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35I think it's going to decorate any garden really nicely,

0:29:35 > 0:29:39and it's already got that weathered look. I think the patina might help it.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42I think, really, it's only going to make about 5, £10, this.

0:29:42 > 0:29:44OK. Well, they paid £18 for it,

0:29:44 > 0:29:46so I don't think they're going to be

0:29:46 > 0:29:47- losing too much sleep on that one. - No.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52So, their second purchase is three cake tins.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56Now, I say three. We're only showing two here because they are so big.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58I'm assuming that these are what, in date?

0:29:58 > 0:30:01I think these could be 1950s, 1960s, something like that.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03Commercially, what do you reckon?

0:30:03 > 0:30:05I think about 30-60 pounds.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07- Ooh, right. Well, they paid 33 for the three.- Did they?!

0:30:07 > 0:30:12- So they're in with a real chance there...- Yes.- ..of making a profit.

0:30:12 > 0:30:16- And the third item is a toddy lifter, yes?- Yeah, yeah.

0:30:16 > 0:30:17I really like this piece.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20- I do.- It's got a really good colour to the glass.- Mmm.

0:30:20 > 0:30:21It shows that early lead glass.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24I like the way it's cut, it's got that decanter shape.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26I've estimated at 30-50 pounds,

0:30:26 > 0:30:27I hope it's going to make more, though.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30Yeah. So will they, cos they paid £85 for it.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33But with the right collectors chasing it,

0:30:33 > 0:30:35hey ho, in with a chance.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38Well, having heard your verdict on those three items,

0:30:38 > 0:30:40I think it's fair to say that they will probably need

0:30:40 > 0:30:41Thomas' bonus buy.

0:30:41 > 0:30:44So, let's find out what it is.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49So, Gwyn and Sian, you left our

0:30:49 > 0:30:53Thomas here £164 of bonus buy money.

0:30:53 > 0:30:57So, Thomas, what did thou go forth and buyeth?

0:30:57 > 0:31:00I know you wanted to buy some bling, so I bought you some bling.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02So what we have here is an 18-carat gold

0:31:02 > 0:31:05aqua and diamond ring with a...

0:31:05 > 0:31:08not a matching brooch, but a gold brooch

0:31:08 > 0:31:11- with aquas and half cut pearls in there.- Right.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13It's a pretty ring, isn't it?

0:31:13 > 0:31:16- Pretty ring.- Really pretty, and you get a bar brooch with it,

0:31:16 > 0:31:17all rolled into one.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20- What do you think of that? - How much was it?

0:31:20 > 0:31:22See, that's all you're interested in, isn't it?

0:31:22 > 0:31:23That's all you care about...

0:31:23 > 0:31:24ALL LAUGH

0:31:24 > 0:31:27- ..is the money.- It's the money!

0:31:27 > 0:31:29- How much do you think?- 80.

0:31:29 > 0:31:32- A bit more than 80.- 105?- £100.

0:31:32 > 0:31:33SHE GASPS

0:31:33 > 0:31:35- £100 for these.- That's good.

0:31:35 > 0:31:40- It is good, isn't it?- It is. I would have thought that'd be more. - Yeah, absolutely.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43- Roughly how much do you think it would make?- I think you're looking at 120, 180.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46- So, a profit.- Yeah. I would've thought so.- Yes.- Yeah.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50- All right. So remember, you don't have to make your minds up now anyway.- No.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53Wait till you've sold your first three items, and then make your decision.

0:31:53 > 0:31:57But in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer had to say about

0:31:57 > 0:31:59Thomas's bling buy.

0:32:01 > 0:32:03I think it's a great present for a lady, isn't it?

0:32:03 > 0:32:05Wouldn't she love that dress ring?

0:32:05 > 0:32:08I mean, it's zircon, but it's got diamond chips round it. Real showy piece, isn't it?

0:32:08 > 0:32:10It is showy, isn't it?

0:32:10 > 0:32:14And thrown in, you've got a brooch. Brooches are not as popular nowadays, but thrown in, it's great.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17I've estimated it at £80-120.

0:32:17 > 0:32:18Thomas went and paid £100, so...

0:32:18 > 0:32:22- Brilliant.- ..there's a real chance there, isn't there?- Yeah, yeah.- OK.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25So, that's the Reds done, now to the Blues.

0:32:25 > 0:32:26And this is Rob and Katie.

0:32:26 > 0:32:27Erm...

0:32:27 > 0:32:30And the first item is this amazing copper kettle.

0:32:30 > 0:32:31Yeah, gorgeous, isn't it?

0:32:31 > 0:32:33- It is.- Great shape.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36You do come across this sort of triangular form, and I have seen

0:32:36 > 0:32:39this sort of industrial look before in the arts and crafts kettles.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41They do appear at auction.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44- What do you think?- I've seen these make about £20-40 quite often.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46They paid 37 for it.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48They may be onto a profit, but don't hold your breath.

0:32:48 > 0:32:51- No.- OK. So, their second purchase -

0:32:51 > 0:32:55four silver table salts and a mustard pot and cover.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58They're Joseph Gloucester, Birmingham, 1911,

0:32:58 > 0:33:00all nicely hallmarked up.

0:33:00 > 0:33:01So, estimate?

0:33:01 > 0:33:04I've estimated these at £30-50.

0:33:04 > 0:33:08They paid £53, so I think it's £53 well spent.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11But we'll find out later.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13So, third item.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17- I mean, that's quite a trunk, isn't it?- It's a super one, isn't it?- Mmm.- Yeah.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20It's built to last. It's built to withstand cargo ships, aeroplanes,

0:33:20 > 0:33:22and yet it's in such great condition.

0:33:22 > 0:33:26You know, I mean, look at this lovely patina, lovely honey colour to it.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29I've conservatively estimated this at £20-30.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32- I'm hoping it's going to make a bit more than that.- Let's hope so.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35- I mean, they paid £59 for it. - Mmm-hmm.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39I think it's fair to say that our Blue team would be well advised to

0:33:39 > 0:33:40- look at their bonus buy.- Yeah.

0:33:40 > 0:33:44So now let's look at Caroline's bonus buy.

0:33:45 > 0:33:46So, Rob and Katie,

0:33:46 > 0:33:51you left our Caroline here £151 to go out and find a bonus buy.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54Caroline, reveal all!

0:33:54 > 0:33:55KATIE GASPS

0:33:55 > 0:33:57Oh, that is so cute.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59- I love it.- Do you know what it is?

0:33:59 > 0:34:01Is it a spoon?

0:34:01 > 0:34:04It is a spoon, well done, well done!

0:34:04 > 0:34:06But for what purpose?

0:34:06 > 0:34:09- Sugar.- No.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12- Any other thoughts?- Salt.- Salt, you're right.

0:34:12 > 0:34:17It could be salt, mustard, but it's lined with gilt,

0:34:17 > 0:34:21which will protect the silver underneath.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23It's a beautiful pattern.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26It's called fiddle, thread and shell.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30It's made in London, 1808.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33- Wow! Can I hold it?- So that is very, very old.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35Oh! It's heavy.

0:34:35 > 0:34:40Yes! From the reign of George III, and that's in really good condition.

0:34:40 > 0:34:41It is, I like it.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44How much did you pay for it, then?

0:34:44 > 0:34:46What do you think I paid for it?

0:34:46 > 0:34:48- Ooh!- Oh, gosh.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52- 25?- 30?

0:34:52 > 0:34:53- 18.- Oh, wow!- 18?

0:34:53 > 0:34:57Yes. So I think there's a little bit of profit in that.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00- You think so, yeah?- You think? - Yes, I do, yeah.- OK.- I like it.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02- Yeah, yeah, like it.- Did well.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04Brilliant, thank you!

0:35:04 > 0:35:05THEY LAUGH

0:35:05 > 0:35:08Now, remember, you two, you don't have to make your minds up now.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10Wait till you've sold your first three items,

0:35:10 > 0:35:12and then make your decision.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16But in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer had to say about

0:35:16 > 0:35:18Caroline's George III silver spoon.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22So here is Caroline's bonus buy.

0:35:22 > 0:35:26Well, it's a lovely salt or mustard spoon.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29Probably more likely mustard with the gilded bowl.

0:35:29 > 0:35:30It's got just lovely features.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32It's got a lovely crest there.

0:35:32 > 0:35:34You got the shell there and the pattern.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37I turn it over. We've got a nice clear set of hallmarks here.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40I've estimated it at £20-40.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42OK. Well, that'll please our Caroline

0:35:42 > 0:35:47because she bought that for a very modest £18.

0:35:47 > 0:35:48So, who's taking the sale?

0:35:48 > 0:35:50- That'll be me.- That'll be you.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52- Well, we'll wish you all the best. - Thank you.

0:35:58 > 0:35:59Are you regulars at auctions?

0:35:59 > 0:36:01I've been to one or two.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03You have been to one or two, so you know what it's about.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07Well, having been a policeman all these years, you know what life's all about, don't you?
