0:00:02 > 0:00:06Today's antique fair comes from the Mona Showground in Anglesey,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09where the local agricultural society have held their country fair
0:00:09 > 0:00:13for the last 145 years.
0:00:14 > 0:00:19These huge grounds measure almost 160 acres.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22That's the size of almost 80 football pitches.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26Today there is not a whiff of farming.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30In fact, the grounds have been taken over by antique stalls.
0:00:31 > 0:00:34Will our two teams manage to harvest a profit?
0:00:34 > 0:00:35Time to find out.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Let's go bargain hunting.
0:01:03 > 0:01:08Our two teams have got 60 minutes and £300 to spend on three items
0:01:08 > 0:01:10that hopefully will return them a
0:01:10 > 0:01:13profit when they sell them at auction.
0:01:13 > 0:01:14Let's see what's coming up.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19In today's show, the Reds are clear-headed...
0:01:19 > 0:01:22- I think we'll go for it. - Dave the decisive.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25Dave the decisive, brilliant!
0:01:25 > 0:01:27..whilst the Blues are confused.
0:01:27 > 0:01:29Oh, we're going round in circles.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34And at the auction, the Reds are desperate for the right bidders...
0:01:34 > 0:01:37- Where are they?- Yes. - One more, one more.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42..whilst the Blues brace for a bumpy ride.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45- ALL:- Oh.- Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch. But all that is coming up later.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47So let's meet today's teams
0:01:47 > 0:01:49and we're keeping it in the family
0:01:49 > 0:01:51today, because for the Red team we have
0:01:51 > 0:01:53got mother and son, Edna and David,
0:01:53 > 0:01:57and for the Blues we've got father and daughter, Morris and Sue.
0:01:57 > 0:02:02- Hello. ALL:- Hello!- So, Edna, tell me a little bit about yourself.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05I began my career as a teacher on Merseyside
0:02:05 > 0:02:09and I was a head of the year in a large comprehensive school.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12We got the opportunity of early retirement
0:02:12 > 0:02:14and decided to move to Wales.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17And we bought an old chapel to renovate.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20- Wow.- It's a bread and butter Baptist chapel.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Through our garden there runs a stream
0:02:23 > 0:02:25and it was made into a baptism pool
0:02:25 > 0:02:29- and it was where Lord George was baptised.- That's incredible.
0:02:29 > 0:02:34It's an old stone house, so the windowsills are two-foot wide,
0:02:34 > 0:02:37so I had to have something to put on them.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40The first window I decided was blue and white pottery.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42- Love it.- And I had to have a Welsh dresser.
0:02:42 > 0:02:47- Of course.- And I also started liking antique snuff bottles.
0:02:47 > 0:02:49So I collect those for another of my windows.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51So, David, what do you do for a living?
0:02:51 > 0:02:54I'm a qualified PE teacher
0:02:54 > 0:02:56and I taught in a comprehensive school in St Helen's
0:02:56 > 0:02:58and then I decided to move down to Wales.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01I moved to a local school,
0:03:01 > 0:03:05taught maths and now I'm teaching in a behaviour unit in the school,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07so that keeps me occupied, shall we say?
0:03:07 > 0:03:10With some characters, they're lovely.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12Tell me about your sporting background.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14I really enjoy my rugby.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16My grandfather played for Great Britain...
0:03:16 > 0:03:18- Wow.- ..in the 1930s.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21I found a cigarette card with his picture on it, which is amazing.
0:03:21 > 0:03:25- No.- Yeah. Ogden cigarette cards. - The ultimate accolade.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Yeah, superb. My dad played for Lancashire...
0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Wahey.- ..which I thought you'd enjoy.
0:03:31 > 0:03:32And when I was 18, I was lucky
0:03:32 > 0:03:34enough to be picked for England Schools
0:03:34 > 0:03:36and we toured New Zealand.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39Was there anybody in that team that actually did go on...?
0:03:39 > 0:03:41Well, I didn't want to mention it.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43There was a guy called Jonah Lomu who seemed to run in
0:03:43 > 0:03:48seven tries past us, so I have fond and upsetting memories of him.
0:03:48 > 0:03:50So what about tactics, you two?
0:03:50 > 0:03:52David and I usually agree.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54Sometimes I think he buys a load of rubbish
0:03:54 > 0:03:56and then it turns out to be worth quite a lot.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00- Yeah.- But he's a very good haggler. - Is he?- I do like a haggle.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03- So I'll leave that to him. - All right. Well, good luck, Reds.
0:04:03 > 0:04:05Turning my attention to the Blue team
0:04:05 > 0:04:08and turning to Sue, you've got a very busy-sounding job.
0:04:08 > 0:04:14Yes. I work in the council at Rexham and I am a communications manager,
0:04:14 > 0:04:19so I look after social media, the websites, graphic design, print,
0:04:19 > 0:04:22Welsh language. So it's quite an all-encompassing job.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25Now, I believe me and you share a bit of a dream.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28- Do we?- Well, I know that we both visit the island of Majorca.
0:04:28 > 0:04:33- Ah, yes.- And I think you've got a yearning to have a house there.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36An aspiration I would describe it as. I would love to buy a house.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40I'd love to retire and buy a house in Majorca, that would be the dream.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43I was wondering, perhaps today, going round, I might pick something up and
0:04:43 > 0:04:46perhaps make a few million and perhaps buy that dream property.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50Yes. Well, if nothing else, Sue, we can both dream, can't we?
0:04:50 > 0:04:53- We can.- But, Morris, tell me a little bit about you.
0:04:53 > 0:04:57Well, I'm retired. I used to work as an architectural technician
0:04:57 > 0:04:58with a number of places.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Started off with Mobil Oil, of all things, in Manchester.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04Ended up in Caernarfon in the County Council.
0:05:04 > 0:05:09Took early retirement, started my own little architectural
0:05:09 > 0:05:12business and then carried on until I was 70.
0:05:12 > 0:05:14What about hobbies?
0:05:14 > 0:05:17My original hobby actually was model aircraft building.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19These were flying models.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21But we're going back quite a long way.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24And I've always enjoyed photography, had my own darkroom.
0:05:24 > 0:05:26Now it's digital, obviously.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30And on my 80th birthday, the family got together and bought me a drone.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33So now I can combine the aeronautical thing
0:05:33 > 0:05:36and the photography thing in one item.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40- Fantastic.- I really have enjoyed that.- So, what about collecting?
0:05:40 > 0:05:41I've got to be honest,
0:05:41 > 0:05:46most of my knowledge comes from watching Bargain Hunt...
0:05:46 > 0:05:47- Yeah.- ..Antiques Road Show.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50You're saying all the right things, Morris, you really are.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53I think because you do watch so many of these programmes,
0:05:53 > 0:05:55I'm going to bow to this knowledge, really.
0:05:55 > 0:05:56Because you will text me or phone me and say,
0:05:56 > 0:05:58"Oh, they picked the wrong item today.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00"I could've told you it was the wrong thing."
0:06:00 > 0:06:03- Oh.- It's easy at home when you're sitting there.
0:06:03 > 0:06:05Yeah. You're going to find this out in quick time.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08OK, you're going to need some money to spend, so here we are, Sue,
0:06:08 > 0:06:11£300 for the Blues.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13- Thank you.- Edna, £300 for the Reds.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16- Thank you very much.- And this is the bit where you move off and meet your
0:06:16 > 0:06:18relevant expert, so I'll see you later.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21Well, it looks like we've got something of a family affair
0:06:21 > 0:06:23on our hands today.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27So let's find out who will be guiding our team.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Hoping to spot a profit for the Reds, it's Thomas Plant.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35And lighting the path for the Blues, it's Caroline Hawley.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38What are we looking for today?
0:06:38 > 0:06:40Possibly some blue and white pottery.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42- Yeah.- Snuff bottle.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45All of a sudden, I've decided I'm going to look for something silver.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48- I really like watches.- Watches. - I hope I can find a nice watch.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Possibly some sporting memorabilia.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52I like things with animals in them,
0:06:52 > 0:06:55so hearing what my father's just said, what about a silver animal?
0:06:55 > 0:06:58Your 60 minutes starts now. DONG
0:06:58 > 0:06:59Let's go. Yeah.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Let's shop.- They're off. And by the sounds of it,
0:07:02 > 0:07:06mother and son are already having a difference of opinion.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08I don't want to spend hundreds.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10Well, I think you've got to spend to accumulate.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12With so many stalls to choose from,
0:07:12 > 0:07:15the Blues are taking their time to get their eye in.
0:07:15 > 0:07:19- Is there more around here? - Nothing there.- Yes. Oh, right.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22That's lovely, that little seed there.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27- Oh, that's beautiful.- So this is a seed that floats upon the sea.
0:07:27 > 0:07:30These seeds fall from the trees in the tropics.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34- Oh, wow.- And they float to another island and that's how they generate.
0:07:34 > 0:07:38- Oh.- And sometimes we have taken these seeds and we have mounted
0:07:38 > 0:07:40them into various receptacles.
0:07:40 > 0:07:44This receptacle at the moment is a Vesta case, cos you open it up...
0:07:44 > 0:07:47- That's lovely, isn't it?- That's where you put your matches in.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49- Oh, wow.- You turn it over and that's where you strike them, there.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51Oh, I've never seen one of those before.
0:07:51 > 0:07:54This is in white metal. Possibly in silver.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57- It is dated 1896 there. Can you see that?- Oh, yes, I can.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00- On the little cartouche. - It's quite intricate, isn't it?
0:08:00 > 0:08:03- Yes.- Yes.- It's got some lovely engraving around this rim.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06- Would that sell well at auction? - People collect Vestas.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09- OK.- I would like it even though I don't collect Vestas.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12I think it's absolutely beautiful. Can I hold it, please?
0:08:12 > 0:08:15- Of course you can.- Thank you. That is really lovely.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19- How much is your Vesta? - It's 100.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23- What's your very best on it, please? - 85 would be my very best.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26Is there any chance you could do 70 on that, my friend?
0:08:26 > 0:08:29It looks like Dave's haggling skills are beginning to show.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32It's got a lot going for it. It's dated for a fact.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35- Yes.- That's lovely. Sure we can't do 70?
0:08:35 > 0:08:37You couldn't squeeze to 75 for us, no?
0:08:37 > 0:08:40- I'm holding out for 80. - Holding out for 80.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45- What do we do? Do we think about it? - I think we go for it.- OK.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47- I think we go for it. - OK. Dave the decisive.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Dave the decisive, brilliant!
0:08:50 > 0:08:52Well done, Reds, that's your first
0:08:52 > 0:08:55item found with only three minutes gone.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59Back with the Blues and Morris could be about to embark on some DIY.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02- Do you do any woodworking? - Yes. He used to do a lot...
0:09:02 > 0:09:04- Did you?- Yeah. Quite a lot actually.
0:09:04 > 0:09:09And I had tools rather like this, which were my grandfather's.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12- Yeah?- So it would be going back a long way.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14And they were these type of planes
0:09:14 > 0:09:17- which were special riveting or rebating planes.- Yeah.
0:09:17 > 0:09:18- Which these are?- Yes.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22Yeah, because they'll actually do a different shape.
0:09:22 > 0:09:24Oh, yeah. So a moulding on a skirting board for instance.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26It's a moulding, yes, plane.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29- And it's all done by machine now, isn't it?- Yeah.- Which is a shame.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31Is that something you might be interesting in buying?
0:09:31 > 0:09:34This was not on my agenda, I have to say, at all.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37- Can I also say, it isn't silver. - No, it isn't silver.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40- There's no animals in it. - Well, there might be.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42There might be a dead spider or something.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44- But it does appeal to my DIY instincts.- I thought it might.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46I like the box, I have to say. I really do like the box.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48Oh, the box itself is nice.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51And the fact that it's complete and in this box.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54- But?- And the tools are the same period, obviously.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57- It looks late Victorian to me. - Yes, I would say so.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59The saw is very nice.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01You're not convincing me that you love this.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05"The saw is very nice" sounded a bit forced.
0:10:05 > 0:10:07- But you love it, don't you? - I think it's great.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11How much is your box and tools, please?
0:10:11 > 0:10:14- £160 for the whole lot. - For the whole lot?
0:10:14 > 0:10:16- That seems a good price.- It does.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19- That's over half our total budget. - Should we think about it?
0:10:19 > 0:10:23- It's entirely up to you. - The price seems OK.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26- But that's the gentleman's first price.- I'll knock £5 off it.
0:10:26 > 0:10:30- Could you take what I have?- 150. - Yeah?- I'll take 150 for it.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33There's a lot of tools for your money.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35And it's a good-looking box.
0:10:35 > 0:10:40- Right, OK?- Yeah. Fine.- Deal.- Whoa!
0:10:40 > 0:10:42Excellent!
0:10:42 > 0:10:45With half the budget spent, Sue doesn't look too happy.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47On the bright side though, they've
0:10:47 > 0:10:50- got their first item after only five minutes.- One down...
0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Two to go.- Now we have to please Sue.- Yes. Oh, come on, Sue.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57Right. So both our teams are speeding ahead.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59And what's this Thomas has spotted for the Reds?
0:10:59 > 0:11:02- Do you know what that is? - It's not bookends.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04- It's a book trough.- A book trough?
0:11:04 > 0:11:07You're in your library, no television.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09- Oh, right.- You've had enough of your knitting, yeah?
0:11:09 > 0:11:11Your sampler work.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13So you go up the steps, put them in the trough
0:11:13 > 0:11:15and then walk in to your sitting room.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17You sit down and start to read, you know?
0:11:17 > 0:11:20- I think it's rather fun, don't you? - It is. So what sort of wood is it?
0:11:20 > 0:11:23- Coromandel.- Coromandel.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27With the brass, very Victorian, with this Gothic design to it.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30- And he's got £70 on it. - I'm not keen on the brass.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33- Aren't you?- I'm not keen on the brass.- You'd have to polish it.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36- That's true.- So it is a no to the book trough,
0:11:36 > 0:11:39and the search goes on for the next two items.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41Inside, the Blues have seen this unusual lamp.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44It is a Tiffany style.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Yes.- It's glass.- I thought it was glass, top and bottom.
0:11:47 > 0:11:50- Dragonfly. Beautiful.- It is quite nice.- It is stunning with the light.
0:11:50 > 0:11:54- Yeah, it is nice.- Yeah, yeah. - How much is that?- 195.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Remember, you've only got £150 left!
0:11:57 > 0:11:59What would your best price be on that lamp?
0:11:59 > 0:12:03- I would do it for 180. - That's out.- That's out.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05It is lights out for the dragonfly lamp
0:12:05 > 0:12:08and the search goes on for Sue's animal-themed item.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13Now, these are the silver animals that you're talking about.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15- Yeah. Absolutely. - They are terribly popular.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17That little pig is gorgeous.
0:12:17 > 0:12:19Yes, a lot of them are made by Sampson Mordan.
0:12:19 > 0:12:24They're all Edwardian, turn-of-the-century, 1900-ish.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27There's quite a lot of pigs about, so, consequently,
0:12:27 > 0:12:30he's only 225, but look at the emu,
0:12:30 > 0:12:34he's very rare, hence 1,250.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36- And the frog.- He's lovely, isn't he? - Yeah, beautiful.
0:12:36 > 0:12:38But we haven't got enough money. That frog is lovely.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40So we need to say goodbye to the silver animals.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42Moving on and the Reds are heading
0:12:42 > 0:12:45inside, on the hunt for sporting memorabilia.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47In a previous life, you were a PE teacher.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51- I was, yes.- Have you ever seen these?
0:12:51 > 0:12:54- And they are not juggling.- I was thinking rounders bats, maybe.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56- They're not rounders bats.- No? OK.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59I think it's the term calisthenics or something -
0:12:59 > 0:13:02where they sort of use these for exercise.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04- Right, OK.- So like this.- Right.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07- Cos they are weighted. Do you want to feel them?- Oh, yeah, thank you.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10- Oh, they are, aren't they? - They have a weight to them.
0:13:10 > 0:13:13- Yeah, yeah. And then you've got vintage skipping rope.- Wow, OK.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16I don't think it is going to be long enough for you to use.
0:13:16 > 0:13:19- Possibly not.- Maybe you, Edna.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21- Did you used to skip?- I did used to skip.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24- Did you used to do sort of...? - All sorts. I couldn't do it now.
0:13:24 > 0:13:28So there's a vintage one there. Right. Just bear with me.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32- I'm with you.- Out of the corner of my eye, I've spied something else.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35- Right, OK.- Just behind you there.
0:13:35 > 0:13:39- Look at this.- Oh, my goodness. - Look. Look.
0:13:39 > 0:13:44- This is what every boy needs. - Oh, isn't that fabulous?
0:13:44 > 0:13:49Your own travelling tennis bag/suitcase.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52There is your tennis racket in there.
0:13:52 > 0:13:53There is your tennis balls.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57You've got cricket whites, jumper, it all goes in there.
0:13:57 > 0:13:5968 on there for that.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01It was made by the Germans.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04"Echt Vulcanfiber."
0:14:04 > 0:14:06What are you thinking, Thomas?
0:14:06 > 0:14:09- We could make up... - Bit of a sporting...
0:14:09 > 0:14:11- We've got a bit of a PE lot. - Definitely, yeah.
0:14:11 > 0:14:14- It's just a bit of fun, isn't it? - Definitely.- It's lovely.
0:14:14 > 0:14:17So with a combined total of £101,
0:14:17 > 0:14:20it is up to Thomas to exercise his powers of negotiations
0:14:20 > 0:14:21to get the price down.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23Now, with 20 minutes gone,
0:14:23 > 0:14:26is Caroline holding the key to success?
0:14:26 > 0:14:28I've never seen anything like this.
0:14:28 > 0:14:34So it's a brooch that you'd wear the key and then with the chain.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37- Yeah.- It is not hallmarked silver.
0:14:37 > 0:14:40- No, but it tests as silver, I'm sure.- What is the price on that?
0:14:40 > 0:14:41168.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43It is certainly very unusual, but
0:14:43 > 0:14:47that would be another huge ticketed item, wouldn't it?
0:14:47 > 0:14:49After Morris blew half the money on the tool box,
0:14:49 > 0:14:52this key is definitely over budget.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55Now, has Thomas got a good deal
0:14:55 > 0:14:58on sporting equipment priced at £101?
0:14:58 > 0:15:02- She'll let us have the lot for £50. - OK.- That's over 50% off.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05- Nicely done, Thomas. - I did try a bit of a deal.
0:15:05 > 0:15:07I said, "Look, if I could get
0:15:07 > 0:15:12"20 skips done without breaking, could I have it for 45?"
0:15:12 > 0:15:15- She said no.- Oh. We would all like to have seen that.
0:15:15 > 0:15:16£50. What do you think?
0:15:16 > 0:15:19I like it. I think it's fun.
0:15:19 > 0:15:21- I think it's a fun thing, yeah, definitely.- Yes.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24- Yeah?- Yeah.- That's your second item.
0:15:24 > 0:15:27- Brilliant.- Doing well.- You certainly are, Reds.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30Unlike the Blues, who still have two more items to find.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32Will they make it to the finishing line in time?
0:15:32 > 0:15:35Before we find out, I want to show you something
0:15:35 > 0:15:36that's close to my heart.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46The minute I saw this decanter at a car boot,
0:15:46 > 0:15:49I knew that it was coming home with me.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52I've actually had it for no more than about ten years.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55It was filthy, it didn't look a bit like this,
0:15:55 > 0:15:58but I spent a lot of time cleaning it up and hey presto.
0:15:58 > 0:16:03It looks as though it was made during the late Georgian period.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06Just looking at the general shape of it,
0:16:06 > 0:16:10it's very much 1820, the cutting is exquisite.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13You've got this wonderful deep cutting on the shoulders,
0:16:13 > 0:16:16and if you look carefully, you've got these arcades
0:16:16 > 0:16:19where you've got fan and hobnailed cutting and that
0:16:19 > 0:16:23decoration was actually extended to the stopper.
0:16:23 > 0:16:27Now, having said 1820, it's not.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30It is very Georgian in inspiration,
0:16:30 > 0:16:32but this piece was probably made
0:16:32 > 0:16:37somewhere between 1910 and around about maybe 1930.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40That was a time when there was a great revival
0:16:40 > 0:16:43in Sheraton furniture and, believe it or not,
0:16:43 > 0:16:48the Georgian period was looked back on, in those days, as being retro.
0:16:48 > 0:16:50This has been made of lead crystal.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52Now, when people talk about lead crystal,
0:16:52 > 0:16:56what they're saying is that the glass content
0:16:56 > 0:16:59has got 24% lead oxide in the mix.
0:16:59 > 0:17:03Now, I can tell you, when you pick this up, it is quite a weight.
0:17:03 > 0:17:07I don't mind admitting, when it comes to pouring the wine, that's my job.
0:17:07 > 0:17:11I wouldn't entrust anyone else with my decanter.
0:17:11 > 0:17:15If I wanted to buy the equivalent quality of glass today,
0:17:15 > 0:17:17and there aren't many makers out there, I can assure you,
0:17:17 > 0:17:22that can do this, you would have to pay around about £280.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25I'm pleased to say, when I was at the car boot,
0:17:25 > 0:17:28I paid the princely sum of £28.
0:17:28 > 0:17:33Decanters for me are the bargain buy of the moment.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36How long that moment is going to last, let's watch, wait and see.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47Back to the shopping and the Reds have two items, while the Blues
0:17:47 > 0:17:49trail behind with just one.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52Despite having only £150 left,
0:17:52 > 0:17:56Sue has not completely ruled out another big-ticket item.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58- I do love that tape measure. - That's gorgeous.
0:17:58 > 0:18:02- Isn't it just?- I'll do it for 130.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05We've gone quite high-end again, haven't we?
0:18:05 > 0:18:07Nothing wrong with going high-end.
0:18:07 > 0:18:09It's novelty, it's genuine antique, so...
0:18:09 > 0:18:10It caught my eye immediately.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13I think it's lovely. It's a lot better than the one I've got in my
0:18:13 > 0:18:15handbag from a Christmas cracker.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18I should hope so. While Sue measures up the remaining budget,
0:18:18 > 0:18:21Thomas is serving up some blue and white pottery for Edna.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24- There's quite a lot going on there. - Quite pleasant.
0:18:24 > 0:18:25Got like a little pretty deco trio,
0:18:25 > 0:18:27sort of like an Italian lake scene.
0:18:27 > 0:18:31- Yeah.- Only issue is, when one drinks one's tea, is your finger out?
0:18:31 > 0:18:34- Do you want to put your finger out? - Pinkie.- Pinkie out.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37- All day.- I like your style, Dave. Very stylish.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40- That's quite nice, actually, isn't it?- Is that...?
0:18:40 > 0:18:43How many? One, two, three, four,
0:18:43 > 0:18:49five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12 cups. 11 saucers.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51I think it is a no-goer, I'm afraid.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55Not quite the tea party they were hoping for.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57With only 20 minutes to go,
0:18:57 > 0:19:00the Blues seem to have drifted apart, and Morris
0:19:00 > 0:19:03is distracted by an extravagant bird cage.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05VENDOR: I think they're very Indian, aren't they?
0:19:05 > 0:19:09- Have a look at the pillars. - There's a lot of work in them.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12- Cor blimey, yeah.- Your dad has got carried away
0:19:12 > 0:19:13talking about bird cages.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15They are nice, but I would imagine very expensive.
0:19:15 > 0:19:19- Very, yes.- He said we could have it for 1,100.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22That one is definitely out of your budget, Morris.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24With £170 left to spend,
0:19:24 > 0:19:28the Reds are also being drawn to some pricier items.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30- This is Czech.- Oh.
0:19:30 > 0:19:34- Look at that design of the trees. - Forest, it's a forest.
0:19:34 > 0:19:39Forest, yeah. If you put it against a light... See, look at that.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42- Do you see that, Edna? - Yes, I can, it's beautiful.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46- Oh, I don't know.- Have we got a chip?- We've got a nick.
0:19:46 > 0:19:50- Ohh.- It was all going so well, wasn't it?
0:19:50 > 0:19:54- Something else there.- OK.- Let me introduce you to Sweden.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57And here we have a piece of Art Deco - sea green, beautifully
0:19:57 > 0:20:04faceted, but look at that engraving of the female form.
0:20:05 > 0:20:07- Beautiful.- That is beautiful.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10You've seen the price, it's £260.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13Let's put that one down, shall we, Thomas?
0:20:13 > 0:20:15Back with the Blues and Morris is in for a shock.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Good grief. Porthmadog high street.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21Is it? How do you know that?
0:20:21 > 0:20:23I've spent nearly all my life living in Porthmadog.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26I went there during the war when I was four years old
0:20:26 > 0:20:28and I lived there till I got married.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30It was obviously some years ago,
0:20:30 > 0:20:32because the town hall no longer exists.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34They took it down. It's a great shame.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38That's The Commercial Hotel, that would be the butcher's shop.
0:20:38 > 0:20:41How far is Porthmadog from here, then?
0:20:41 > 0:20:43- 35 miles?- 35 miles. - Yeah, it's not that far.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45I like the Lowry-ish look to it.
0:20:45 > 0:20:48The buildings and people in the foreground.
0:20:48 > 0:20:51- I think it's lovely. - Pen and ink and watercolour.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54- Yeah.- It's an original. Very reasonably priced at £48.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57- What's your best price on that? - £38.- 38.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59Well, I'm not going to say anything now,
0:20:59 > 0:21:01because it's your turn to buy something.
0:21:01 > 0:21:03You're looking absolutely terrified.
0:21:03 > 0:21:07- I am.- So Sue is vetoing Morris' nostalgic desires.
0:21:07 > 0:21:11- I think we should give Sue a chance. - Yeah, I do, too.
0:21:11 > 0:21:12With ten minutes to go,
0:21:12 > 0:21:15it looks as if Edna has found one of the items she was looking for.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17You did mention scent bottles, didn't you?
0:21:17 > 0:21:21- I certainly did. - I like the colour of them.
0:21:21 > 0:21:22The way the light shines off them.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24- Opalescent.- Oh, right, OK.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26I like the shape of that one.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29The fan design, yeah. Rather marvellous, isn't it?
0:21:29 > 0:21:31I wonder if that one might be slightly out of our price range.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34Probably. No, I always like expensive things.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37- How much is this fan?- 145.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39OK, so look at the way...
0:21:40 > 0:21:42..the light comes through it.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47- And it's signed "Sabino". - Is that French?
0:21:47 > 0:21:51French. And this is probably 1940s.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53VENDOR: '30s, '40s, yes.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55You've definitely got the Art Deco appeal.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58- Yeah.- Whilst the Reds consider the scent bottle,
0:21:58 > 0:22:01the Blues are really starting to fret.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03We need to buy something, don't we, really?
0:22:03 > 0:22:04- We do.- Yes.- You really do.
0:22:04 > 0:22:06There are only seven minutes left
0:22:06 > 0:22:08and you still have two items to find.
0:22:08 > 0:22:12- I'm in panic mode a bit now. - Yeah, so are we.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14£38. It's not going to make a lot of money.
0:22:14 > 0:22:16- It's not going to make a lot, no. - Right, we'll leave it.
0:22:16 > 0:22:18But we're going to have to find something quickly.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21- Yeah.- Time stops for no man, Blues.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25And the Reds also need to make a decision on their final item.
0:22:25 > 0:22:29I quite like the other ones with the figures within the stoppers.
0:22:29 > 0:22:31- Yeah.- OK.- With the lighter opalescence. Yeah.
0:22:31 > 0:22:35I love the butterfly. So this one's made in France, so this one's going
0:22:35 > 0:22:37- to be post-war.- Yeah.
0:22:37 > 0:22:39I think that's dead pretty.
0:22:39 > 0:22:42- I think that one you'd have to be a bit of a connoisseur.- OK.
0:22:42 > 0:22:45You've got £70 on that one.
0:22:46 > 0:22:4845.
0:22:49 > 0:22:53- That's quite a nice price. - I think if we could go 40...
0:22:53 > 0:22:55- That would be...- ..we'd go for it.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57- Definitely.- Yes, OK, I'll do 40.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59- Thank you.- Thank you. - That's wonderful.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01- I think we go for it. - I definitely do.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04It's beautiful. And for that price, I'm thrilled.
0:23:04 > 0:23:08- Third and final item bought. - Third and final item, done.
0:23:08 > 0:23:11- Brilliant, that's you finished, Reds.- And relax.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14- Great.- But the Blues are really under pressure.
0:23:16 > 0:23:18With two items to find
0:23:18 > 0:23:21and just four minutes left on the clock,
0:23:21 > 0:23:23this could be an impossible task.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25Oh! We're going round in circles.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27Oh, no!
0:23:27 > 0:23:29We haven't looked right at the beginning, have we?
0:23:29 > 0:23:33- No, we haven't.- So come on. - And you, Morris, keep up.
0:23:33 > 0:23:38What about that little thing with the silver top on it?
0:23:38 > 0:23:43How much is your silver-topped jar? Absolutely rock bottom.
0:23:43 > 0:23:4727, I'm asking. But I'll do it for 20.
0:23:47 > 0:23:50- Cute enough.- It's not going to make much, is it?
0:23:50 > 0:23:53- It's not going to make much... - But we haven't got...
0:23:53 > 0:23:57- 1901.- Birmingham. 1901. - What about 18?
0:23:57 > 0:24:04- What about 15?- 15.- Not 15. - 15.- 16, can it be?- 17.
0:24:04 > 0:24:08Oh, gosh! You're going to have to decide. It's up to you.
0:24:08 > 0:24:13- Yes.- Yes?- Right, 17.- Right, 17. - Great! Well done, Blues.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15But you're not out of trouble yet.
0:24:15 > 0:24:19There are less than two minutes left and still one item to go.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21Will our helpful stallholder come to the rescue again?
0:24:23 > 0:24:25Now, that's a little Vesta.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28It's interesting, because it's depicting cycling
0:24:28 > 0:24:31and there's always a big interest in cycling.
0:24:31 > 0:24:35If we turn it over to the other side, the lady in her skirt.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37In Edwardian dress, yes.
0:24:37 > 0:24:40So that's rather a nice thing. What's the price on that?
0:24:40 > 0:24:43My best price on that would be £40.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45- What do you think?- I like it.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48Hurry, Blues, just 20 seconds on the clock.
0:24:48 > 0:24:50Cycling is massive now, isn't it?
0:24:50 > 0:24:53Could you do that for 38?
0:24:53 > 0:24:55- Are you happy with that? - We'll go for that.
0:24:55 > 0:24:59- Would you like that? Are we all happy?- She's the handshaker.
0:24:59 > 0:25:03Goodness. Finished in the nick of time.
0:25:03 > 0:25:05- We're out of time.- It's gone.
0:25:05 > 0:25:07BELL RINGS Stop the clock.
0:25:07 > 0:25:10- Your 60 minutes is up. - Is it worse than you thought?
0:25:10 > 0:25:12Yes. I'm never sitting on the sofa
0:25:12 > 0:25:15again and shouting at them in the auction house, ever.
0:25:15 > 0:25:18Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.
0:25:20 > 0:25:22Edna and David hope to grow a profit
0:25:22 > 0:25:25with the seed pod Vesta case bought for £80.
0:25:26 > 0:25:30They look to serve an ace with the sporting items for £50.
0:25:32 > 0:25:35And bought the opalescent scent bottle for £40.
0:25:36 > 0:25:39So, Thomas, slick teamwork here, I thought.
0:25:39 > 0:25:41Fabulous teamwork.
0:25:41 > 0:25:43A great bond between mother and son.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45It was a real pleasure to be involved in.
0:25:45 > 0:25:49So, Edna, tell me, what was the one item that you liked more than any of
0:25:49 > 0:25:52- the others?- I think I liked the Vesta case.
0:25:52 > 0:25:54- It was beautiful.- But which do you think is going to give you the
0:25:54 > 0:25:57- biggest profit?- The perfume bottle.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00- We did manage to get the price down quite a lot.- You did.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03- I hope it'll make us the biggest profit.- What about yourself, David?
0:26:03 > 0:26:06I really liked the mixed sporting lot we got.
0:26:06 > 0:26:07- Yeah?- I really did, yes.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09I think that's a great lot.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11I did hope to see Thomas skipping but we missed out on that,
0:26:11 > 0:26:14- unfortunately.- What about the one item that is going to give you the
0:26:14 > 0:26:16- biggest profit?- I would say the scent bottle as well.
0:26:16 > 0:26:20- So what was the big spend, you two? - 170.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23So you're going to cross my palm with £130.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25- I am.- OK.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28So, Thomas, what are your thoughts on your bonus buy?
0:26:28 > 0:26:31I think I'd like to find something which Edna mentioned,
0:26:31 > 0:26:34- something which may sparkle.- OK.- May entice.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36- OK, excellent.- Sounds intriguing.
0:26:36 > 0:26:40Well, while Thomas goes off for an enticing bonus buy,
0:26:40 > 0:26:43let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.
0:26:43 > 0:26:47Morris and Sue hope to carve out a profit
0:26:47 > 0:26:50with the tool box bought for £150.
0:26:50 > 0:26:54They spent £17 on the silver-topped dressing table jar.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59And paid £38 for the Vesta case.
0:27:00 > 0:27:04Well, Caroline, a remarkable bit of spending there.
0:27:04 > 0:27:08The second remarkable is these two are still talking to one another.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11There was a bit of disagreement about the tools.
0:27:11 > 0:27:13You're not keen on the tools, are you?
0:27:13 > 0:27:16Not particularly. It wouldn't be my choice.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19But I bow to my father's knowledge and carpentry skills,
0:27:19 > 0:27:21so that's what we did.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23But I think it put you off finding
0:27:23 > 0:27:25something until the last five minutes.
0:27:25 > 0:27:27Yeah, five minutes.
0:27:27 > 0:27:32But the main thing is you did end up with three items and what was your
0:27:32 > 0:27:35- favourite?- The enormous box full of tools.
0:27:35 > 0:27:38- Couldn't go wrong.- Which is going to give you the biggest profit?
0:27:38 > 0:27:40Obviously the tool box.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43All right, Sue. What was your favourite buy of the day?
0:27:43 > 0:27:44The matchbox.
0:27:44 > 0:27:47Which do you think is going to give you the biggest profit?
0:27:47 > 0:27:50- I'm going to say the matchbox. - OK. How much did you spend in total?
0:27:50 > 0:27:53- 205, was it?- Yes.- 205.
0:27:53 > 0:27:57- Yes.- Which means that somebody is going to give me £95.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59There it is. OK, Caroline, there you go.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02- Thank you very much. - £95 for a bonus buy.
0:28:02 > 0:28:04- Any thoughts?- I'm going to do it quickly.
0:28:06 > 0:28:08Right. OK.
0:28:08 > 0:28:12So while Caroline goes off to make a speedy bonus buy,
0:28:12 > 0:28:14we're off to the auction.
0:28:17 > 0:28:20We've travelled from Anglesey to the auction in Nantwich,
0:28:20 > 0:28:23Cheshire, where I'm joined by auctioneer Chris Large.
0:28:23 > 0:28:26- How do you do?- Lovely to be here.
0:28:26 > 0:28:28Let's get straight down to business with our Red team,
0:28:28 > 0:28:30Edna and David.
0:28:30 > 0:28:36Their first item is this smart-looking Vesta case.
0:28:36 > 0:28:37It's gorgeous, isn't it?
0:28:37 > 0:28:39It's made out of a nut that's been polished,
0:28:39 > 0:28:42I think it's continental. There are no hallmarks on it.
0:28:42 > 0:28:47It's got a nice monogram on it and it's got the date on it, 1896.
0:28:47 > 0:28:49Just a really lovely, sweet little piece.
0:28:49 > 0:28:50It is. What is your estimate?
0:28:50 > 0:28:53It has got a come-buy-me estimate of £30 to £50,
0:28:53 > 0:28:56but I'm sure that's going to help it race on and make a lot more.
0:28:56 > 0:28:58Well, let's keep our fingers crossed
0:28:58 > 0:29:00because they paid £80 for it, but it's got potential.
0:29:00 > 0:29:05- Yeah.- OK. Item number two is a case of anyone for tennis?
0:29:05 > 0:29:07- Yeah.- And everything else for that matter.
0:29:07 > 0:29:09- What do you make of that?- Well,
0:29:09 > 0:29:12exactly what we need if we ever have a British summer.
0:29:12 > 0:29:15I think it's got a really trendy case as well.
0:29:15 > 0:29:17I mean, I love the houndstooth interior.
0:29:17 > 0:29:19Even if you're not into tennis, you can use the case.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22- I think it's a great item. - OK. Estimate?
0:29:22 > 0:29:26- I think £15 to £25. - They splashed out £50 on that.
0:29:26 > 0:29:28But there's plenty to go for, isn't there?
0:29:28 > 0:29:33- Definitely.- And third item is that rather intriguing opalescent
0:29:33 > 0:29:36glass perfume bottle with a butterfly stopper.
0:29:36 > 0:29:38Now, what do we know about this?
0:29:38 > 0:29:40Well, I don't think it's made by Lalique
0:29:40 > 0:29:42and I don't think it's made by Sabino either,
0:29:42 > 0:29:43which is what it looks like.
0:29:43 > 0:29:45- Yes, it does.- And wouldn't it be nice if it was?
0:29:45 > 0:29:47But it's a nice decorative piece.
0:29:47 > 0:29:50- It's got that great opalescence colour.- And of indeterminate age,
0:29:50 > 0:29:53- I think it's fair to say. - That would be fair.- So estimate?
0:29:53 > 0:29:58- £20 to £30.- They paid £40 for it, so it needs a good win to blow that
0:29:58 > 0:30:00- into a profit, yes?- Hopefully.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03So, I think it worthwhile for Edna and David
0:30:03 > 0:30:05to consider Thomas' bonus buy.
0:30:05 > 0:30:07So, let's find out what that is.
0:30:09 > 0:30:10So, Edna and David,
0:30:10 > 0:30:15you left Thomas £130 to go and find a bonus buy for you.
0:30:15 > 0:30:16Thomas, what did you come up with?
0:30:16 > 0:30:20Well, you know I said, when you handed me the money,
0:30:20 > 0:30:22something you mentioned, Edna, wasn't it?
0:30:22 > 0:30:25I brought you a piece of jewellery.
0:30:25 > 0:30:28- Ah, lovely.- So this is a piece of British Arts and Crafts.
0:30:28 > 0:30:34It's dated 1908, Birmingham, made by Gourdel Vales & Co.
0:30:34 > 0:30:38It's a beautiful bit of silver, with enamelling, hammer-beaten,
0:30:38 > 0:30:42what we call planished and then a little pearl drop at the end.
0:30:42 > 0:30:46- That's beautiful.- It is, isn't it? - Yes.- Come on then, what did you pay?
0:30:46 > 0:30:48Well, see you're there.
0:30:48 > 0:30:51David doesn't care about the money, he thinks it's beautiful.
0:30:51 > 0:30:54This did cost, I have to say, £110.
0:30:54 > 0:30:56- SHE GASPS - Wow!- It is wow, isn't it?
0:30:56 > 0:30:58But it is a beautiful bit of jewellery.
0:30:58 > 0:31:01- Nice box as well.- Well, I think the box just sets it off.
0:31:01 > 0:31:04- Definitely.- We were looking for jewellery, weren't we?
0:31:04 > 0:31:06- Yes.- And you hadn't got any, so I thought this was ideal.
0:31:06 > 0:31:09- Fabulous.- Lovely.- What do you think it will make?
0:31:09 > 0:31:11I think these are very popular.
0:31:11 > 0:31:14It's got a very good chance of making £120 to £150,
0:31:14 > 0:31:17- because it's very beautiful. - It is lovely.
0:31:17 > 0:31:18The important thing to remember is
0:31:18 > 0:31:20you don't have to make your minds up now.
0:31:20 > 0:31:22Just wait until you've sold your first three items
0:31:22 > 0:31:24and then that's when you make your decision.
0:31:24 > 0:31:29But in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer has to say about
0:31:29 > 0:31:31Thomas's Art Nouveau brooch.
0:31:31 > 0:31:33So, here is Thomas' bonus buy.
0:31:33 > 0:31:37It's an attractive-looking enamelled jewel, isn't it?
0:31:37 > 0:31:39It's lovely, isn't it? It's a great
0:31:39 > 0:31:41piece of Arts and Crafts silver.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43It's Gourdel Vales & Co, Birmingham.
0:31:43 > 0:31:45It's hallmarked 1908.
0:31:45 > 0:31:48Lovely bit of enamel work. I really like this.
0:31:48 > 0:31:50Very saleable, yeah? But what estimate do you reckon?
0:31:50 > 0:31:52I've estimated it £70 to £100.
0:31:52 > 0:31:57Thomas went and paid £110 for it and I can understand why.
0:31:57 > 0:31:59Once again, with the right people chasing it,
0:31:59 > 0:32:02we could be in for something of a little bit of a bonus there, yeah?
0:32:02 > 0:32:05- Yeah. Fingers crossed. - Well, that's it for the Reds.
0:32:05 > 0:32:08On to the Blues, this is Morris and Sue with their expert,
0:32:08 > 0:32:11Caroline Hawley, and three planes,
0:32:11 > 0:32:13which is just the tip of the iceberg,
0:32:13 > 0:32:15because we've got a box full of this stuff, haven't we?
0:32:15 > 0:32:17- A chest full.- It's great.
0:32:17 > 0:32:19It's great to have a rummage through and all the different
0:32:19 > 0:32:22moulding planes. They've got different-shaped blades.
0:32:22 > 0:32:24I like seeing the makers' marks that are on them,
0:32:24 > 0:32:27I also like seeing the names of the people who owned them.
0:32:27 > 0:32:30Really nice little set of stuff. It's one man's work,
0:32:30 > 0:32:34- you know?- Of his lifetime. - Exactly.- So, estimate?
0:32:34 > 0:32:37I've estimated this at about £80 to £120.
0:32:37 > 0:32:41Right. They paid £150, so we're getting near where we want to go.
0:32:41 > 0:32:44Item number two is quite a small little object,
0:32:44 > 0:32:48that silver-top little box and the sort of thing I would have thought was
0:32:48 > 0:32:50probably in a toilet set at some stage.
0:32:50 > 0:32:53Definitely, yeah. Nice decorative piece for the dressing table.
0:32:53 > 0:32:56It's Levi and Sullivan, Birmingham. It's 1901, hallmarked.
0:32:56 > 0:32:58It's in nice condition.
0:32:58 > 0:33:00You so often find that these have been polished so much that they have
0:33:00 > 0:33:04- holes in them.- Yes.- And, luckily, this one's survived that.
0:33:04 > 0:33:08- So, small object, small price? - Yeah, £10 to £15.
0:33:08 > 0:33:09They paid £17 for that.
0:33:09 > 0:33:13- So, we're not far off.- And finally this little Vesta case.
0:33:13 > 0:33:15Well, it's got cycles on it.
0:33:15 > 0:33:18Anything to do with bikes and cycles always adds a premium.
0:33:18 > 0:33:19A great subject matter.
0:33:19 > 0:33:23Unfortunately, it has a crack in it, which is on the reverse side of it,
0:33:23 > 0:33:26- Which might pull the value back a bit.- OK, estimate?
0:33:26 > 0:33:30- £20 to £30.- OK, They paid £38, so fingers crossed there.
0:33:30 > 0:33:32So it's going to be worth their
0:33:32 > 0:33:35while considering Caroline's bonus buy.
0:33:35 > 0:33:37So let's now find out what that is.
0:33:39 > 0:33:42So, Morris and Sue, you left Caroline £95
0:33:42 > 0:33:45to go and spend on a bonus buy.
0:33:45 > 0:33:49Caroline, you can do a lot with £95, so show us what you did.
0:33:49 > 0:33:52I can. I did it very quickly. Very quickly.
0:33:52 > 0:33:56I made my mind up, spotted it, seized it and here it is.
0:33:56 > 0:33:58- Oh!- Oh!
0:33:59 > 0:34:03- What do you think? - It's silver.- It is silver.
0:34:03 > 0:34:07And it's got a beautiful hallmark, but I don't know what it is.
0:34:07 > 0:34:08It's in beautiful condition.
0:34:08 > 0:34:14- It is.- It's made by Turner and Sons from Birmingham in 1979.
0:34:14 > 0:34:17To me that is timeless elegance.
0:34:17 > 0:34:21- It is extreme...- If you were to go into a shop and buy this brand-new,
0:34:21 > 0:34:24it would cost way over £100.
0:34:24 > 0:34:26It's really good quality.
0:34:26 > 0:34:29The base will be weighted, so it's heavy.
0:34:29 > 0:34:32It's not going to knock over. I only wish I brought a rose.
0:34:32 > 0:34:34I cut one from the garden to put in it.
0:34:34 > 0:34:36It's a beautiful specimen vase.
0:34:36 > 0:34:39Yes, it's nice. How much did you pay?
0:34:39 > 0:34:42- How much do you think I paid? It's solid silver.- £45.
0:34:42 > 0:34:45- I would say £45 as well.- £15.- Whoa!
0:34:45 > 0:34:48- OK.- Sure as eggs is eggs, there's a profit in that.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51- I would say...- Probably about the only item we have, so...
0:34:53 > 0:34:54That's confidence for you.
0:34:54 > 0:34:56Oh, ye of little faith.
0:34:56 > 0:34:59Listen, you don't have to make your minds up about this
0:34:59 > 0:35:02until you've sold your first three items,
0:35:02 > 0:35:05but in the meantime, let's find out what the auctioneer has to say
0:35:05 > 0:35:07about Caroline's silver vase.
0:35:07 > 0:35:12So, here is Caroline's bonus buy, what you might call simplistic.
0:35:12 > 0:35:15Yes, it's got that modernistic look, hasn't it?
0:35:15 > 0:35:18- It's a look that people want. - Definitely in a modern home.
0:35:18 > 0:35:21And it's silver, I don't think you can go wrong with silver.
0:35:21 > 0:35:24Turner and Sons, Birmingham. It's hallmarked for 1979.
0:35:24 > 0:35:27- Just a nice, simple piece. - So, estimate?
0:35:27 > 0:35:29£20 to £40.
0:35:29 > 0:35:32Well, she paid £15 for it, which was,
0:35:32 > 0:35:34- I think, something of a very canny buy, don't you?- Yeah.
0:35:34 > 0:35:37- So, who's going to be up there in the rostrum?- That will be me.
0:35:37 > 0:35:38That will be you. OK. We'll be
0:35:38 > 0:35:41watching and willing you on.
0:35:43 > 0:35:44£110 I'm bid. At £110.
0:35:44 > 0:35:46115 I'll take.
0:35:46 > 0:35:47Any further bids?
0:35:47 > 0:35:50Are you regulars at the auction?
0:35:50 > 0:35:52I've only been to one before.
0:35:52 > 0:35:54So it's still relatively new for you?
0:35:54 > 0:35:57- Exciting, yes.- So your first item's just about to come up,
0:35:57 > 0:36:01it's the Victorian white metal mounted Vesta case.
0:36:01 > 0:36:03Lovely thing. I love it.
0:36:03 > 0:36:05It's a really nice thing. You paid £80 for it.
0:36:05 > 0:36:06It's coming up now.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09The Victorian white metal nut and mounted Vesta case.
0:36:09 > 0:36:11Lovely piece this. I have two commissioned bids,
0:36:11 > 0:36:14which I'm not surprised about.
0:36:14 > 0:36:15My top bid here is £65 only.
0:36:15 > 0:36:18- £70 I'm looking for. - We want more than that, though.
0:36:18 > 0:36:21At £65 I'm bid on commission. I'm selling at £65.
0:36:21 > 0:36:25- £70. £75 I've got on commission. - Yes.- £85.- Come on, one more.

0:36:30 > 0:36:33- £80, is there? Any further bids? - GAVEL BANGS
0:36:33 > 0:36:34OK.
0:36:35 > 0:36:38Well, hey-ho, minus £5.
0:36:38 > 0:36:41£75. You paid £80 for it. You know,
0:36:41 > 0:36:44- not a disaster by any means. - Not a disaster.- No.
0:36:44 > 0:36:47- This is our lot.- It is.
0:36:47 > 0:36:50The vintage tennis set in the travelling case.
0:36:50 > 0:36:52And for this lot I'm bid here, we have £10 bid only.
0:36:52 > 0:36:54£15 I'm looking for.
0:36:54 > 0:36:56At £10 I can start this lot off on commission.
0:36:56 > 0:36:58I see a room of tennis pros!
0:36:58 > 0:36:59Come on.
0:36:59 > 0:37:02At £10 is all I'm bid. £15, do I hear? At £10 bids.
0:37:02 > 0:37:04Any further bids?
0:37:06 > 0:37:12- Oh! Where's Andy Murray when you want him, hey! THOMAS:- 40, love.
0:37:12 > 0:37:16Minus 45 in total. That's the running total.
0:37:16 > 0:37:18OK. So, here we go.
0:37:18 > 0:37:20You paid £40 for your perfume bottle.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22The opalescence moulded glass perfume bottle.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25And for this lot commission interest here with me £15.
0:37:25 > 0:37:27I can start this off £20. I'm looking to continue.
0:37:27 > 0:37:29£15 I'm bid on commission.
0:37:29 > 0:37:31I'm selling. £20's bid in the room now.

0:37:36 > 0:37:37At £20, any further bids?
0:37:40 > 0:37:43So minus 20.
0:37:43 > 0:37:47It gives us a rolling total now of minus £65.
