:21:00. > :21:01.It's Ella!

:21:02. > :21:03.We'll go together.

:21:03. > :21:05.It's crucial for kids to come here when they're young,

:21:05. > :21:08.because vision isn't fixed until around seven years old,

:21:08. > :21:14.and early stimulation can help to develop their neural pathways.

:21:14. > :21:16.So there's every chance that by coming here as children,

:21:37. > :21:40.to help the kids learn how to communicate through touch.

:21:40. > :21:44.Make all the movements as firm as you can,

:21:44. > :21:47.cos it's much more comforting. That's lovely.

:01:52. > :01:56.singing live. What could possibly go wrong? Think it will be fine,

:01:56. > :02:03.don't worry. That special performance is coming up. Before

:02:03. > :02:07.they sing, Lorraine Kelly would like to tell you about a little

:02:07. > :02:17.girl from Scotland called Melissa and how Children In Need made a

:02:17. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:24.For children to enjoy a sense of freedom and independence, can seem

:02:25. > :02:28.impossible. I want to introduce you to a girl called Melissa and a

:02:28. > :02:33.Children In Need project that has trance transformed her life and

:02:33. > :02:37.that of her family. My name is Melissa and I'm 12 years

:02:38. > :02:42.old. Melissa has a learning disability.

:02:42. > :02:46.Her language is closer to that of a younger child. She also has autism

:02:46. > :02:51.which makes her world confusing. I don't untd stand what --

:02:51. > :02:56.understand what people say to me. She will need supervision the whole

:02:56. > :03:04.time. She needs to be kept safe, but also she requires our attention.

:03:04. > :03:12.She wants that human contact and conversation. I feel sad that I

:03:12. > :03:16.don't have anyone to play with. Melissa tends to find it hard to

:03:17. > :03:21.make friends because she tends to play alongside other children. As

:03:21. > :03:26.her peer group are older, they are more sophisticated so she gets left

:03:26. > :03:33.out because she can't keep up with them, understand what's going on.

:03:33. > :03:40.She has a simple approach to life. She desperately wants to be with

:03:40. > :03:50.friends and be a social animal, but she is very isolated. My biggest

:03:50. > :03:53.

:03:53. > :03:57.fear for the future for Melissa is that she will have a lonely life.

:03:57. > :04:05.But things change for Melissa and her family when she was lucky to

:04:05. > :04:10.get a place in a club run by the Yard Adventure Centre funded by

:04:10. > :04:13.Children In Need. For a few hours a week, the Yard are able to give

:04:13. > :04:21.children who are dependant on carers and family a taste of

:04:21. > :04:25.independence, often something they have never experienced before.

:04:25. > :04:30.For the first time ever this year, Melissa has her own place to go.

:04:30. > :04:40.Her own place to be with her friends and she is proud of it.

:04:40. > :04:42.

:04:43. > :04:44.This is Sam. Sam, this is Emma. My best friends at the Yard are Sam

:04:45. > :04:47.and Stewart and Melissa together. To the children this unique

:04:47. > :04:50.atmosphere gives them a place to learn essential life skills, make

:04:50. > :04:55.friends and express themselves. She is not isolated. She is not

:04:55. > :05:00.lonely and she has an amazing social life now all because of The

:05:00. > :05:06.Yard. Making friends makes me happy.

:05:06. > :05:11.I love The Yard. I have no idea how I would cope or

:05:11. > :05:16.any of the families I know would go would cope if we lost The Yard. It

:05:16. > :05:22.is It is giving our children hope for the future and our hope for our

:05:23. > :05:28.children's future. Only six years ago, the Yard nearly

:05:28. > :05:32.close due to lack of funding and they are still at risk. Children In

:05:32. > :05:37.Need fund two clubs at The Yard, but both are full and they are

:05:37. > :05:41.having to turn away children like Melissa every week. Your money can

:05:41. > :05:51.make a real difference in keeping essential centres like The Yard

:05:51. > :06:00.

:06:00. > :06:03.300 will pay for 50 more children to be looked after by pro by pro

:06:04. > :06:07.jicts like the yard for a day. You can see how much Melissa has

:06:07. > :06:17.enjoyed her time and it would be great to help other children like

:06:17. > :06:20.

:06:20. > :06:28.her. Please pick up the phone and Thanks, Alicia. OK. We've arrived

:06:28. > :06:36.at that moment, that's been keeping Gareth Malone awake for months.

:06:36. > :06:45.Lord knowsI get tired after a tricky set of stairs, but this man

:06:45. > :06:50.is cream-crackered. We have over 100 children on stage and we have
