:07:48. > :07:52.They come, and they go. And there's more. I'd like to talk to you about
:07:52. > :07:56.child poverty. Look. I know we're having a wonderful time here, but
:07:56. > :07:59.just take a moment out. It's a difficult subject because none of
:07:59. > :08:04.us likes to think that children are going hungry in the United Kingdom.
:08:04. > :08:09.The truth is, they are. Now, right now on this Friday night, there are
:08:09. > :08:13.thousands of children going without the very basic provisions that all
:08:13. > :08:17.of us here take for granted. Earlier this year the BBC showed a
:08:17. > :08:21.very powerful documentary on this very subject. It was called Poor
:08:22. > :08:27.Kids. In it a very brave group of young children talked openly about
:08:27. > :08:31.living in extreme poverty, and the film makers have allowed us to use
:08:31. > :08:41.an extract so if you can meet a young boy named Sam - he's going to
:08:41. > :08:41.
:08:41. > :08:45.tell you what life has been like My name's Sam, I'm 11 years old,
:08:45. > :08:47.Sam lives with his dad and older sister.
:08:47. > :08:49.His mum walked out on the family on Sam's second birthday.
:08:49. > :08:50.I think I'm poor because we only get 420 a month.
:08:50. > :08:55.And that goes on what we need... and not what we want.
:08:55. > :08:59.We have to spend it on food and electric and gas.
:08:59. > :09:05.The electric is put on a key which goes into a box
:09:06. > :09:08.and Dad puts a fiver on it every so often.
:09:08. > :09:11.And when we run out of electric, the whole house goes...
:09:11. > :09:13.SNAPS FINGERS
:09:13. > :09:15.Everything just shuts off.
:09:15. > :09:19.Except for battery-powered stuff, and candles.
:09:19. > :09:27.And the gas, when that runs out, the whole house is freezing.
:09:27. > :09:32.With every penny accounted for, the family have no choice
:09:32. > :09:35.but to rely on credit for many household items.
:09:35. > :09:38.You're not actually paying for the TV.
:09:38. > :09:42.You're paying for a household item,- say the fridge,
:09:42. > :09:44.the cooker or the washing machine.
:09:44. > :09:49.They'll give you a set amount to pay off each week,
:09:49. > :09:52.two weeks, or month.
:09:52. > :09:57.Ours is set round about 50 a month at the minute.
:09:57. > :10:03.But like all credit, this form of payment incurs interest,
:10:03. > :10:07.costing extra money Sam's family can ill-afford.
:10:07. > :10:08.Oh, yeah!
:10:08. > :10:18.Sam's dad is keen to find a job that might fit around childcare.
:10:18. > :10:24.Computer said no. Computer said no.
:10:24. > :10:27.It's not easy for people to look for jobs now,
:10:27. > :10:33.because for every five people, there's one job.
:10:33. > :10:39.Almost half the children in this part of Leicester live in families
:10:39. > :10:42.without work, and Sam sometimes goes without meals as a result.
:10:42. > :10:46.Until Dad has a job, we don't have any money.
:10:46. > :10:49.And sometimes I don't even get lunch.
:10:49. > :10:54.Dad is juggling money.

:11:10. > :11:14.It'll probably take years for my dad to get a job,
:11:14. > :11:16.or maybe decades.
:11:16. > :11:24.Or even, maybe...centuries.
:11:24. > :11:27.Fizzing! Daddy!
:11:27. > :11:37.It is fizzing.
:11:37. > :11:37.
:11:37. > :11:41.You get used to them.
:11:41. > :11:48.Mine's going, mine's going... mine's gone.
:11:48. > :11:52.The family's finances also affect Sam's school life.
:11:52. > :11:57.I have to re-use my sister's shirts and then I get called a girl.
:11:57. > :12:01.It gets me psyched up, and then I just want to punch them.
:12:01. > :12:05.But then I get detention or sent to isolation.
:12:05. > :12:09.It doesn't matter if you're wearing- a girl's shirt
:12:09. > :12:12.or a girl's trousers or a girl's blazer.
:12:12. > :12:14.Because you've got them...
:12:15. > :12:19.It don't matter what you're wearing, it matters who you are.
:12:19. > :12:23.People call me big girl's blouse as well,
:12:23. > :12:27.because I'm wearing girl's blazers and shirts.
:12:27. > :12:30.Look, this is a girl's shirt.
:12:30. > :12:36.Cos girls have them little flecks, them little lines.
:12:36. > :12:43.My sister donated this shirt to me cos I needed a shirt for school.
:12:43. > :12:46.I worry about Sam all the time.
:12:46. > :12:49.Once you're marked, you're marked for life.
:12:49. > :12:52.The minute people find out you're poor,
:12:52. > :12:56.they automatically assume, and then you lose that friend.
:12:56. > :12:58.You have to be so careful what you say,
:12:58. > :13:02.because you're automatically, in the back of your head
:13:02. > :13:05.you're always going, "What if I say- something and they don't like it?",
:13:05. > :13:08.or "What if I let something slip?"
:13:08. > :13:10.You've always got the what-ifs going through your head.
:13:10. > :13:13.You tend to just start merging into the background,

:32:22. > :32:24.And I guess we have to find a way of managing that.
:32:24. > :32:27.Otherwise, that hanging around turns- to destructive behaviour.
:32:27. > :32:32.And that's where KPC comes in.
:32:32. > :32:35.Every week, youth workers like Karen get out onto the streets
:32:36. > :32:40.and talk to the kids, offering them an alternative.
:32:40. > :32:42.We're from KPC over the road - we're a youth centre -

:33:39. > :33:42.Youth crime is down 60% in this area. That's incredible!
:33:42. > :33:47.KPC absolutely works. So that's great, then. Problem solved.
:33:47. > :33:53.Well, actually, no.
:33:53. > :33:59.Like youth clubs all over the country, KPC is struggling.
:33:59. > :34:02.Six years ago, founder Helena passed away.
:34:02. > :34:06.And since then, funds have been much- harder to come by.
:34:06. > :34:09.KPC is facing closure.
:34:09. > :34:12.They really, really need funding all the time.
:34:12. > :34:15.It's like, my eldest, she's going to be eight in December
:34:15. > :34:18.and she wants to come here,
:34:18. > :34:20.but there's no guarantee it'll still be open.
:34:20. > :34:24.So if Helena has grandkids, might not get to come to KPC.
:34:24. > :34:29.So I find that really heartbreaking.
:34:29. > :34:33.KPC needs your continued support more than ever.
:34:33. > :34:37.Otherwise, everything that Helena worked so hard for will be lost.
:34:37. > :34:40.ALL: KPC!
:34:40. > :34:42.It would break my heart
:34:42. > :34:45.to think this place could potentially close down

:34:49. > :34:52.they could possibly have, to learn life skills,
:34:52. > :34:54.give them ambition, keep them off the streets.
:34:54. > :34:57.That this could go, that would feel like we're going backwards.
:34:57. > :35:00.It makes no sense.And I don't want to see that happen.
:35:00. > :35:02.But we can't do that without your help.
:35:02. > :35:10.So please call 03457 33 22 33. Every penny counts.

:35:26. > :35:28.It costs 250 to keep that place open for a night, and they're
:35:28. > :35:32.obviously doing a great job. Children In Need funds hundreds of
:35:32. > :35:37.projects like this around the UK, so please help us continue to
