:36:41. > :36:44.went to get me a drink. He locked the door, which was weird. When I

:45:07. > :45:11.donations possible. Children with Asperger's Syndrome
:45:11. > :45:17.can find the world a very difficult, lonely place. If you can't make eye
:45:17. > :45:21.contact or start a conversation, making friends is pretty hard. If
:45:21. > :45:26.you're thrown by a routine and change can be daunting, I'd like to
:45:26. > :45:36.introduce you to a young man called Nathan. He's 16, and he's going to
:45:36. > :45:38.
:45:38. > :45:45.You're sort of like detached from the world in a way. You can't
:45:45. > :45:49.really make connections with people as easily as other people can. All
:45:49. > :45:55.the signs were there when you look back about how he had obsessions
:45:55. > :46:02.and the things that he did - yeah, it just made sense. He's very
:46:02. > :46:06.logical, likes things to have a set outcome, things like that. It's not
:46:06. > :46:13.contagious. It's just a mental difference, really, a difference in
:46:13. > :46:19.how the brain works. Like many children with Asperger's, Nathan
:46:19. > :46:24.found life at school very tough. was quite lonely and quite
:46:24. > :46:28.alienated and a bit of hostility towards me as well. I was very
:46:28. > :46:30.anxious, struggling to handle all the workload as well. His mum and
:46:30. > :46:37.dad eventually decided to remove him from school, but things went
:46:37. > :46:42.from bad to worse. He began to lose weight. His confidence went really
:46:42. > :46:52.down. His self-esteem was at rock bottom. He'd given up on everything,
:46:52. > :46:58.and started becoming suicidal, like. Nathan and his family felt like
:46:58. > :47:01.they'd reached a dead end. But then they found the Autistic Society for
:47:02. > :47:06.the Greater Manchester area. Here, trained staff like Paul are able to
:47:06. > :47:11.support and build confidence in kids with Asperger's. They also run
:47:11. > :47:19.a programme funded by Children In Need, which specifically helps them
:47:19. > :47:24.cope with the challenges they face. In 2000 we started a project called
:47:24. > :47:28.Aspirations. People with Asperger's don't quite fill in in school. The
:47:28. > :47:34.idea with social groups was to get them to make friends and have a
:47:34. > :47:40.better quality of life. Once we get them here, amazing changes we see
:47:40. > :47:43.in just their well-being and self- esteem. Nathan has come on tenfold
:47:43. > :47:48.in probably just over a year I have been working with him from not
:47:48. > :47:51.really wanting to go out of the house. It's fantastic. He's come on
:47:51. > :47:57.in leaps and bounds. It is great because it's got people to relate
:47:57. > :48:02.to, to talk to, to keep him happy. I don't really know what stage we'd
:48:02. > :48:06.be at if it wasn't for them. With Paul's help, Nathan is about to
:48:06. > :48:11.take a massive step. See you later. On to college we must go. He's
:48:11. > :48:15.starting at a new school. It's fantastic knew, but also daunting
:48:15. > :48:20.because everyday tasks we take for granted can be tough for Nathan,
:48:20. > :48:26.like the journey to school. There is a lot of unpredictability with
:48:26. > :48:31.things like that. So I try and make things as easy and planned as
:48:31. > :48:36.possible. You don't want to make eye contact with anybody, you can
:48:36. > :48:40.always bring a book out with us. has helped get him back on his feet,
:48:40. > :48:44.but they have weight list of 40 children who are in desperate need
:48:44. > :48:50.of specialist care and support. With the right help, these children
:48:50. > :48:54.could turn their lives around too. He didn't really have a future. At
:48:54. > :48:59.this time 18 months ago, I wouldn't have thought we'd be looking at
:48:59. > :49:03.college and him thinking he could do it. It's very different in a

:28:47. > :28:51.Now, earlier, Gary Barlow introduced us to a young man called

:29:00. > :29:07.you at home, too, so we would like to show it to you again. Life can
:29:07. > :29:16.change without any warning. You are about to hear from a family whose
:29:17. > :29:21.lives were turned upside-down seven years ago, all in a split-second.
:29:21. > :29:26.Prior to the accident, Will was a happy ten-year-old. If there was a
:29:26. > :29:32.tree, he would climb it. He loved to get his knees dirty. All the
:29:32. > :29:38.things that boys do. The 26th February, 2004, was the day that
:29:38. > :29:44.everything changed. He was a bit late home. I did have a gut feeling
:29:45. > :29:48.that something wasn't quite right. From my house I could see the
:29:48. > :29:53.traffic building up and then an ambulance shooting down the road. I
:29:53. > :29:59.knew that it was him. I don't know how I knew. Then the phone call

:30:05. > :30:11.he's been killed on the road. I had no idea. I ran down to the scene
:30:11. > :30:16.and saw him. The impact was so severe it left Will permanently
:30:16. > :30:21.brain damaged. As a baby, I learnt who he was, you know his
:30:22. > :30:26.personality, you know his strengths, his weaknesses. You have a child
:30:26. > :30:36.coming home, ten years of age, and you have not got a clue who they
:30:36. > :30:44.
:30:44. > :30:47.It affects him mentally. He's lost his speech. He can't walk.
:30:47. > :30:53.Will's family, life after the accident presented a whole new

:31:04. > :31:07.before. Now 17 and having regained the use of his right arm, Will
:31:07. > :31:14.communicates using gestures and cards. He still requires round-the-

:31:20. > :31:28.He was in a ball pool. Will was in his wheelchair. I picked him up by
:31:28. > :31:33.his feet and William burst out laughing. LAUGHTER That is the
:31:33. > :31:38.first time that he actually showed us an awareness that there was
:31:38. > :31:43.something more going on. After his accident, his friends from school
:31:43. > :31:46.would come in and play. But they found it really difficult. I can
:31:46. > :31:50.understand that. But suddenly it left him with no friends. These
:31:50. > :31:56.were the people that he had grown up with and suddenly they weren't
:31:56. > :32:03.visiting any more. There is one place where Will can have fun and
