:05:24. > :05:29.Sam was less confident in social situations, so at parties,

:05:30. > :05:31.for example, Isabel and Edward would go straight in there

:05:51. > :05:55.I think Sam's record was 27 times I put him back to bed,

:05:56. > :06:03.Certainly when he started school, he'd have an annual report,

:06:46. > :06:47.He has always been very scared of fire,

:06:48. > :06:51.because he can't hear smoke alarms. So that's what Ember does.

:06:55. > :06:57.and she drops to the floor, and she'll wait till he responds.

:06:58. > :06:59.I think Sam's confidence has improved hugely

:07:00. > :07:04.He's incredibly proud of her, and in the past, where he'd hang back,

:07:05. > :07:08.if people ask him questions about Ember, he'll say, "That's my dog."

:07:09. > :07:15.But the biggest difference we saw was sleep.

:07:16. > :07:19.From that first week, Sam slept through.

:07:20. > :07:22.I couldn't believe that having a dog sleeping in your bedroom

:07:23. > :07:27.She helps him have a happy childhood,

:07:28. > :07:30.and that's what every parent wants for their child.

:07:31. > :07:34.It's kind of scary what life would be like without Ember

:07:35. > :07:40.and without hearing dogs, because she changed my life a lot.

:07:41. > :07:43.She does her job really, really, really well.

:07:44. > :07:47.100%, she's part of the family now. She's brill.

:07:48. > :07:50.She's my best friend, because I know she's always there for me.

:19:42. > :20:10.I love those boys! Next on our bill tonight, performing Beautiful War.

:20:11. > :20:13.Please give it up - I have never said that before - I suddenly feel

:20:14. > :25:30.young - for Kings of Leon. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:25:31. > :25:35.Now, I am sure you agree Children In Need Rocks has been bigger and

:25:36. > :25:40.better than ever ever before! Thank you Gary Barlow - the stars were out

:25:41. > :25:49.tonight. To prove it, let's go back to One Direction!

:25:50. > :25:53.Thanks to Chris and Fern for hosting, thanks to Gary Barlow for

:25:54. > :25:56.putting on an amazing show and thank you to all the acts. This has been a

:25:57. > :26:01.vintage year for Children In Need. It is you at home who will keep it

:26:02. > :26:08.going. We thank you very much. We have others to thank too! Staff at B

:26:09. > :26:14.and Q have encouraged local kids to turn DIY into PIY. That is Pudsey it

:26:15. > :26:19.yourself. Like this lot who make their own Pudsey coat pegs. They

:26:20. > :26:27.have turned paint into Pudsey pounds. Stores got messy with their

:26:28. > :26:32.helping hands walls. Painted faces are fine here - at the round table's

:26:33. > :26:37.fund-raising day in Cardiff, where a carting competition helped to

:26:38. > :26:41.collect cart-loads of cash! And a massive thanks to the staff at

:26:42. > :26:48.Debenhams, where it was all about about the confidence, as kids

:26:49. > :26:50.strutted their stuff Pudsey-style, with a catwalk show.

:26:51. > :27:06.You go, guys! Every penny is spent here in the UK.

:27:07. > :27:08.Next, to Scot lands to hear about a project which has changed the lives

:27:09. > :27:18.of a family there. a young Scottish boy called Sam

:27:19. > :27:21.and his family. Sam has severe autism. Last year,

:27:22. > :27:24.his family reached breaking point. But they then found a project

:27:25. > :27:27.funded by your donations, and what a difference it's made

:27:28. > :27:31.to all of them. Sam's very lovable. When he smiles,

:27:32. > :27:35.it lights the room up. He's on the lower half

:27:36. > :27:38.of the autistic spectrum, You have to speak in very short

:27:39. > :27:44.sentences when you speak to him, so that he just grasps

:27:45. > :27:47.the main points of the sentence. You can't use too many words

:27:48. > :27:50.when you're speaking to him because it just gets

:27:51. > :27:53.too overwhelming for him. He's got different noises

:27:54. > :27:56.for different things, so he's got a happy noise,

:27:57. > :27:59.a sad noise. 18 months ago, Sam's behaviour

:28:00. > :28:05.became extremely distressing. sometimes to the extent

:28:06. > :28:10.of needing hospital care. It was really severe injuries

:28:11. > :28:14.that he was giving himself. And he would bang his head

:28:15. > :28:16.on the floor, the walls, just wherever he saw a hard

:28:17. > :28:24.surface, he would walk up to it and just crack his head

:28:25. > :28:27.right off it. Sam was trying to bang his head

:28:28. > :28:31.up to 300 times a day, A protective helmet didn't help him,

:28:32. > :28:36.as he would pull it aside. We honestly thought that he would

:28:37. > :28:44.kill himself in the end with it. After six months of Sam

:28:45. > :28:47.hurting himself, his mum and dad

:28:48. > :28:50.were at breaking point. We felt that we couldn't cope

:28:51. > :28:54.with Sam any longer and that the safest place for him

:28:55. > :28:57.would be residential care As parents,

:28:58. > :29:06.you feel that you've failed. Facing the reality

:29:07. > :29:09.of breaking their family up, They were able to secure Sam a place

:29:10. > :29:15.at St Crispin's after-school club, Same started going to two hours

:29:16. > :29:20.of the after-school club It provides him and other children

:29:21. > :29:26.with additional needs in a very calm but controlled

:29:27. > :29:31.environment, with one-to-one attention

:29:32. > :29:33.with project workers Within a couple of weeks,

:29:34. > :29:38.we realised Since Sam started at the club,

:29:39. > :29:43.he's got so much more confident. He's much happier

:29:44. > :29:46.when he's meeting new people, and he really loves

:29:47. > :29:49.getting the attention. He also really enjoys trying out

:29:50. > :29:51.lots of new activities It's really nice seeing how much

:29:52. > :29:59.his confidence has grown. Sam going to after-school club,

:30:00. > :30:02.for him, has just been a godsend. He's happier when he gets in,

:30:03. > :30:05.he comes and mixes with us, with all the family,

:30:06. > :30:07.whereas prior to going, he didn't. The after-school club has made

:30:08. > :30:13.the difference between Sam living with his family

:30:14. > :30:16.and being in residential care. You know, Sam has got

:30:17. > :30:20.huge challenges in his life, and as parents, our priority

:30:21. > :30:23.has always been that he is happy. And to see him happy and fulfilled

:30:24. > :30:27.there, you just can't describe it. It's just a lovely feeling

:30:28. > :30:44.that he's happy again. You can change someone's live by

:30:45. > :30:49.picking up the phone. You changed our lives by doing that. Can we ask

:30:50. > :30:52.you to do the same for disadvantaged children all over the UK. They
