0:03:42 > 0:03:43Thank you!

0:03:51 > 0:03:552016 will see over ?5 million distributed

0:03:55 > 0:03:57to hundreds of organisations.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Some are involved in helping youngsters with medical or

0:03:59 > 0:04:03physical problems, but other groups help in less obvious ways,

0:04:03 > 0:04:07like offering a safe place to play, or simply someone to talk to.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Projects funded by Children In Need

0:04:14 > 0:04:18support 55,000 children in Scotland a year.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Youth groups which divert kids from crime and offer opportunities

0:04:21 > 0:04:25for socialising and support are at the heart of the charity's work.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Every week, Twilight Basketball's Dunfermline group

0:04:29 > 0:04:30coaches 30 children.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32One of those was Greg.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Greg was just ten when his dad died.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42A year later, while still reeling from the shock,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45his mum decided to uproot him from their home in Poland.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50It all happened within a week,

0:04:50 > 0:04:52so I just got told to pack and leave.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57I was pretty scared and worried about my life at that moment.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Leaving all that was familiar was a huge wrench, but trying to

0:05:03 > 0:05:08get to grips with a new language and find friends was even harder.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12I had nobody to hang about with or to talk to.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Sadly I was alone all the time and just thinking about life.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21It was an incredibly lonely and anxious time.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24The one place where Greg hoped he'd feel safe and supported

0:05:24 > 0:05:26was at home, but it wasn't to be.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30My mum kind of started not to bother speaking to me.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36She was either locked up in her own room or away with her boyfriend.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40I was just myself in the living room.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46I never had a bed, so I had to sleep on a sofa.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50But I never had proper covers.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53It was pretty cold in the winter.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58And that wasn't the only hardship young Greg had to endure.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01You noticed certain things - the clothes were dirty,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03the shoes were getting more and more tattered.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05You could say he was hungry.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Food was always on his mind.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12My mum wasn't really focusing on what to get me to eat.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16I was pretty hungry quite a lot of times.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Especially in summer when you have no school,

0:06:18 > 0:06:21so you have no school meals to fall back on.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Life at home took its toll on Greg.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28He was starting to discolour in the face.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31I felt a bit unwanted by my own family,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33that they don't really want me there.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41But for a few hours every Friday,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44basketball gave Greg contact with people who supported him.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47I obviously asked Greg if everything was OK.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51That's when he opened up about all the problems at home.

0:06:51 > 0:06:56He was being locked out of rooms, didn't get access to the kitchen.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58He very rarely got to wash his clothes.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01That's when the alarm bells kicked in.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03It was a huge relief for Greg to finally

0:07:03 > 0:07:05tell someone about his troubles.

0:07:05 > 0:07:10I knew that I could trust him with this and I knew he could help me.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12As a result of Ross's intervention,

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Greg was removed from his home and placed in emergency foster care.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21Three years on and the teenager is thriving.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24His best friend's parents took him in and invited Greg

0:07:24 > 0:07:25to join their family for good.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30We just wanted him to have what my kids have.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36It's actually amazing how they basically just gave me

0:07:36 > 0:07:39a new home and treat me like one of their own kids.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46He actually became one of the family just overnight,

0:07:46 > 0:07:48and he treats us like mum and dad.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Twilight Basketball means everything to Greg.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54He wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Greg's life has been transformed by the support and training

0:07:57 > 0:07:59he received from the youth group.

0:07:59 > 0:08:04Even though Twilight taught me sport and how to play basketball,

0:08:04 > 0:08:08I kind of look at it more as a life-changing opportunity.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11I met new people, I got a new family and I'm still with Twilight,

0:08:11 > 0:08:14and now I'm volunteering, helping them out.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17WHISTLE BLOWS Stop the dribbling.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20They provided me all the things that I need to make myself

0:08:20 > 0:08:22a happy guy again.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25When you're dribbling the ball, make sure that your eyes are up...

0:08:25 > 0:08:27'Because of them,'

0:08:27 > 0:08:32I've got something new to look forward to and a new, happy life.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35Twilight gave Greg the confidence to get a full-time job,

0:08:35 > 0:08:39and in turn, his story has inspired one of their schemes.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42The ambassador programme, which is funded by your money,

0:08:42 > 0:08:46trains Greg and 23 other coaches to support the next generation.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Now I am a part-time basketball referee,

0:08:50 > 0:08:53so I go on the weekends and referee basketball games.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55WHISTLE BLOWS

0:08:55 > 0:08:59I am very proud of how far I came because of Twilight.

0:08:59 > 0:09:00Greg's on such a ride.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03He's done a rollercoaster with his hands up,

0:09:03 > 0:09:04just enjoying what's happening.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07It's fantastic to see

0:09:07 > 0:09:09and long may it continue for him.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Time now to find out what happened when two of our

0:09:38 > 0:09:41favourite coppers from Scot Squad went on patrol

0:09:41 > 0:09:43on the mean streets of River City.

0:09:51 > 0:09:56The River City, where the river of dreams is under constant threat

0:09:56 > 0:09:58from a tsunami of disorder.

0:09:58 > 0:10:03Here to mop up the mess are PCs Jack McLaren and Sarah Fletcher.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07We've been called to Shieldinch, which isn't our usual beat,

0:10:07 > 0:10:10but sometimes when staffing levels are low

0:10:10 > 0:10:12and maybe someone has phoned in sick...

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Sick is the official line, but we know why we're really here.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Right, what's that?

0:10:18 > 0:10:22The place is full of bams and the usual polis, Craig Donald,

0:10:22 > 0:10:25ginger fella from Dundee, he's useless, really bad,

0:10:25 > 0:10:28so they brought in Scotland's best policeman.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Oh.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Oh, you're Scotland's best policeman?

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Top three for sure. Elite.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Erm, so if you're so elite,

0:10:37 > 0:10:39why did we get lost on the way over here?

0:10:39 > 0:10:43Place isn't even on a map. Neither is the subway.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Yeah, it's like platform 9 3/4, eh?

0:10:47 > 0:10:49What's that?

0:10:49 > 0:10:51It's, erm, Harry Potter. From Harry Potter.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53I dinnae read kids' books.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54I'm a 22-year-old man.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Anyway, we've only been here a couple of minutes.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02I mean, we can see it's a challenging area.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05What she means is it's hoaching with radgies, eh?

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Like, my radgie antenna's twitching.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12It's like Sixth Sense, but instead of ghosts it's radgies.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14I see radgies everywhere.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Yeah, I mean, we've been notified

0:11:16 > 0:11:18of a couple of challenging characters -

0:11:18 > 0:11:21a Lenny Murdoch,

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Shellsuit Bob,

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Buster The Wrestler.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27He'll no' want to wrestle me, that's for sure.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34From warning Buster to busting wronging, the cops have received

0:11:34 > 0:11:39a tip-off about a bent bag of bullion buried on this beat.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43Eager to go toe-to-toe with the source of the sorry state

0:11:43 > 0:11:46of Shieldinch, the cops go door to door.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Keep your eye oot for the polis.

0:12:49 > 0:12:53safeguarding the health of Shieldinch.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Hi, Bobby. How you doin'?

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Good. Just, erm, "Dr" Annie.

0:13:01 > 0:13:06Office Dr Annie. No, no, no. Erm, so no "Officer", just "Dr" is fine.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10It's like doctors are the polis of hospitals, ain't they?

0:13:10 > 0:13:15Erm... Well, no, it's not really the same thing.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Well, you know how, like, Children In Need's comin' up an' stuff?

0:13:20 > 0:13:25Mm-hm. And, like, like I used to be a wean? Like, back in the day.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29I'm going to sell whoopsies but see because whoopsies are ootta date,

0:13:29 > 0:13:33and I was wonderin' to see if you could sell them to your patients.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57D'you dae homers? Yes, I do do home visits. Brilliant.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01Cos I've got an uncle and he's dislocated his elbow but see if

0:14:05 > 0:14:08No, I can't do that, I can't accept any money, I'm sorry.

0:14:22 > 0:14:27I would even give you ?10 if you started it right now.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37One of the musical highlights from last night was once again

0:14:37 > 0:14:39our very own Children In Need Choir.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43Hundreds of youngsters from across the UK sang as one, and in Scotland,

0:14:43 > 0:14:47our singers this year came from in and around Inverness.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51And before the big night, there was lots of work to be done.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58The children have given up their weekends to rehearse with

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Choir Master Andrew Panton.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03Although the young people have been working in their schools separately,

0:15:03 > 0:15:06this will be the first time they've all come together.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Everybody stand up and make a big semicircle round the piano.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12'The aim for today is to get everyone working together

0:15:12 > 0:15:14'as one cohesive choir.'

0:15:14 > 0:15:18WARM UP NOTES

0:15:18 > 0:15:21'And it's quite a big ask - this is a really concentrated rehearsal

0:15:21 > 0:15:23'and I'm giving them really detailed notes.'

0:15:23 > 0:15:25..two, three, and...

0:15:25 > 0:15:26THEY SING A NOTE Good.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29It's going quite good and it feels quite serious.

0:15:29 > 0:15:34I'd rather quieter, warm, really in the middle of the note.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37# Sometimes in our lives

0:15:37 > 0:15:40# We all have pain

0:15:40 > 0:15:43# We all have sorrow. #

0:15:43 > 0:15:47This is the first time we've all seen each other, for a lot of us,

0:15:47 > 0:15:49so it's really nerve-racking.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51# You need a hand... #

0:15:51 > 0:15:54The choir members even managed to squeeze in some fundraising

0:15:54 > 0:15:56in their free time.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59We're doing a bunch of activities to raise money for Children In Need.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Over there is Pin The Nose On Pudsey Blindfolded

0:16:33 > 0:16:35and listen to people sing.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38# I wonder how, I wonder why

0:16:38 > 0:16:42# Yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky... #

0:16:46 > 0:16:49ALL: Give money to Children In Need!

0:16:51 > 0:16:55Back at the rehearsals, the songs are shaping up well. Good.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Give me that one more time with a smile this time.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59We're doing Lean On Me.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02It feels really exciting and fun.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05# We know that there's

0:17:05 > 0:17:07# Always tomorrow... #

0:17:07 > 0:17:11Really exciting cos nothing really big's come up this far to Scotland.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14# You just call on me, brother... #

0:17:14 > 0:17:17This is young people helping other young people who maybe have

0:17:17 > 0:17:19different needs and are from different backgrounds from them,

0:17:19 > 0:17:22and I think that's what's so special about the choir and,

0:17:22 > 0:17:23in particular, this song.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25# I just might have a problem

0:17:25 > 0:17:28# That you'll understand... #

0:17:28 > 0:17:31I wouldn't even care if we were just practising in the school, as long as

0:17:31 > 0:17:34we're raising money for people that don't have as much as we have.

0:17:34 > 0:17:39For a lot of them, singing together as a group of over 100 people

0:17:39 > 0:17:41is quite a new experience. I've got a funny feeling,

0:17:41 > 0:17:44when they arrive at the studios they're going to be so excited.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49So here they are, the Scottish Children In Need Choir, teaming up

0:17:49 > 0:17:55with more than 1,500 children from across the UK, singing Lean On Me.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02# Sometimes in our lives

0:18:02 > 0:18:05# We all have pain

0:18:05 > 0:18:08# We all have sorrow

0:18:10 > 0:18:13# But if we are wise

0:18:13 > 0:18:16# We know that there's

0:18:16 > 0:18:20# Always tomorrow

0:18:20 > 0:18:22# Lean on me

0:18:22 > 0:18:24# When you're not strong

0:18:24 > 0:18:27# I'll be your friend

0:18:27 > 0:18:31# I'll help you carry on

0:18:31 > 0:18:36# For it won't be long

0:18:36 > 0:18:38# Till I'm gonna need

0:18:38 > 0:18:42# Somebody to lean on

0:18:42 > 0:18:45# You just call on me, brother

0:18:45 > 0:18:48# When you need a hand

0:18:48 > 0:18:51# We all need somebody

0:18:51 > 0:18:54# To lean on

0:18:54 > 0:18:57# I just might have a problem

0:18:57 > 0:18:59# That you'll understand

0:18:59 > 0:19:02# We all need somebody

0:19:02 > 0:19:05# To lean on

0:19:05 > 0:19:07# Lean on me

0:19:07 > 0:19:09# When you're not strong

0:19:09 > 0:19:12# I'll be your friend

0:19:12 > 0:19:16# I'll help you carry on

0:19:16 > 0:19:20# For it won't be long

0:19:20 > 0:19:23# Till I'm gonna need

0:19:23 > 0:19:27# Somebody to lean on

0:19:27 > 0:19:30# You just call on me, brother

0:19:30 > 0:19:33# When you need a hand

0:19:33 > 0:19:35# We all need somebody

0:19:35 > 0:19:38# To lean on

0:19:38 > 0:19:41# I just might have a problem

0:19:41 > 0:19:44# That you'll understand

0:19:44 > 0:19:47# We all need somebody

0:19:47 > 0:19:49# To lean on

0:19:49 > 0:19:54# Please swallow your pride

0:19:54 > 0:19:57# If I have faith

0:19:57 > 0:20:01# You need to borrow

0:20:01 > 0:20:05# For no-one can fill

0:20:05 > 0:20:08# Those of your needs

0:20:08 > 0:20:12# That you won't let show

0:20:46 > 0:20:50# If there is a load

0:20:50 > 0:20:52# You have to bear

0:20:52 > 0:20:57# That you can't carry

0:20:57 > 0:21:01# I'm right up the road

0:21:01 > 0:21:03# I'll share your load

0:21:03 > 0:21:07# If you just call me

0:21:07 > 0:21:10# Call me

0:21:11 > 0:21:13# Call me

0:21:14 > 0:21:15# Call me

0:21:16 > 0:21:18# Call me

0:21:19 > 0:21:21# Call me

0:21:22 > 0:21:24# Call me

0:21:25 > 0:21:27# Call me

0:21:28 > 0:21:31# Call me

0:21:31 > 0:21:32# For

0:21:32 > 0:21:35# It won't be long

0:21:35 > 0:21:37# Till I'm gonna need

0:21:37 > 0:21:39# Somebody to lean on

0:21:39 > 0:21:42# Lean on, lean on

0:21:42 > 0:21:47# Lean on, lean on, lean on me

0:21:47 > 0:21:53# Lean on, lean on, lean on me

0:21:53 > 0:21:57# Lean on, lean on, lean on me

0:21:57 > 0:21:59# I'm gonna need

0:21:59 > 0:22:03# Somebody to lean on

0:22:03 > 0:22:05# I'm gonna need

0:22:05 > 0:22:13# Somebody to lean on

0:22:13 > 0:22:15# Lean on

0:22:15 > 0:22:19# Me. #

0:22:19 > 0:22:22CHEERING

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Still to come - we meet a couple of familiar faces in part two

0:22:48 > 0:22:50of River Squad.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Jack and Victor get dancing.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56And we have another brilliant performance

0:22:56 > 0:22:59from our Scottish Children In Need Choir.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03Children In Need doesn't run groups itself,

0:23:03 > 0:23:06but it does make sure your money goes to organisations

0:23:06 > 0:23:07that really need support.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11And those groups are changing lives in Scotland every single day.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13It funds a huge range of activities,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16whether it's offering help to those with special needs

0:23:16 > 0:23:18or caring for those who're ill.

0:23:18 > 0:23:19HEARTBEAT THUMPING

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Aimee was born three months premature.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24Her condition at birth was critical.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26They're saying the baby's in distress.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28Her heartbeat's right down.

0:23:30 > 0:23:3115 doctors run into the theatre.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33I was...petrified.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37We didn't know whether I was going to survive,

0:23:37 > 0:23:39whether Aimee was going to survive...

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Thankfully, both pulled through.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44Aimee spent her first few months in hospital,

0:23:44 > 0:23:45but shattering news lay ahead.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48They did a check that revealed that Aimee had hydrocephalus,

0:23:48 > 0:23:51and it was...shock beyond shock.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54Hydrocephalus is a condition that affects the brain

0:23:54 > 0:23:55and how it functions.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59Too much fluid in the brain can have damaging consequences.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02The scan showed that it was bad.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05This pressure was building up in Aimee's tiny wee brain.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09Aimee was rushed to theatre to have a shunt inserted in her head.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13The plastic device drains excess fluid,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15but it's not without risk.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17The doctor was honest with us.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19And he says, "This is what keeps her alive,

0:24:19 > 0:24:21"it could work for couple of years,

0:24:21 > 0:24:23"or it could work for an hour."

0:24:24 > 0:24:26Since Aimee's first trip to theatre,

0:24:26 > 0:24:29a cyst was discovered on the other side of her head,

0:24:29 > 0:24:31so she now depends on two shunts.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36In her lifetime, Aimee has endured 17 surgical procedures.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39We know that's not the final count.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42She's going to have to go through this time and time again.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Aimee has already spent half her life in hospital,

0:24:44 > 0:24:47and she will require further operations.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50For her parents, every parting is agonising.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52It's a horrible, horrible situation to be in,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55and it's the same, every single surgery that she has,

0:24:55 > 0:24:57you think, "Is she going to come out this time?"

0:24:57 > 0:25:01Naively, we always said, "It might get easier when she gets older,"

0:25:01 > 0:25:02but I think it's got harder.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07When life's been one long round of anaesthesia and oxygen masks,

0:25:07 > 0:25:09it leaves little time for laughter.

0:25:10 > 0:25:11When she comes out of surgery,

0:25:11 > 0:25:14she's that sore that she just can't move.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18Sometimes, though, a different dose of medicine is called for.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22Your donations fund weekly visits from Hearts And Minds Clowndoctors.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25In will come these Clowndoctors.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27BOTH: AIMEE!

0:25:27 > 0:25:29It's just a total mood changer.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32It's Dr Squeegie and Dr Groovy!

0:25:32 > 0:25:35She goes from this look of,

0:25:35 > 0:25:37"Please, everyone, just go away and don't even look at me,"

0:25:37 > 0:25:40to this wee excited face, she's smiling away.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44The Clowndoctors know exactly what these kids have been through.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46BOTH: Hello!

0:25:46 > 0:25:48# Aimee, Aimee, Aimee, ooh! #

0:25:48 > 0:25:52These highly trained professionals spread joy and hijinks

0:25:52 > 0:25:55throughout Glasgow's Royal Hospital For Children.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Excuse me, could you possibly give me a hand?

0:25:58 > 0:26:01If you could just get... Thank you.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03For Aimee and hundreds of other children who spend

0:26:03 > 0:26:07so much of their lives in hospital, it's the perfect prescription.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09They're medicine in their own right.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11They've got us giggling away, laughing...

0:26:11 > 0:26:13It makes a huge difference.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17You just sit back and they're entertaining her, and she's happy.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19It's taking her mind off what she's in for.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24For that split second, she's back to her old wee self.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26And if we didn't have that, we'd all be doom and gloom.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29See you, Aimee! AIMEE: Bye. Bye, Aimee!

0:26:29 > 0:26:32It relaxes us and can give us ten, 15 minutes' respite.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35If you could keep them with you 24 hours on the ward,

0:26:35 > 0:26:36it would be amazing.

0:27:03 > 0:27:04It's that easy.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Every penny will help a child in some way.

0:27:07 > 0:27:11Children In Need are giving out more money than ever before,

0:27:11 > 0:27:14but sadly, even though you've been hugely generous over the years,

0:27:14 > 0:27:16there's still not enough money to go around.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20So here's a message from our friends in Craiglang.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23Yeah, sweeties for Isa's a nice idea. Oh, hello. I'm Jack.

0:27:23 > 0:27:24And I'm Victor.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28Every year, Children In Need helps thousands of kids across Scotland.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31But they can only do that if you continue to donate.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Which you have done so generously, so please get your phone out

0:27:34 > 0:27:36and text the number you see on screen.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38# Get your phone out

0:27:38 > 0:27:40# Get your phone out

0:27:40 > 0:27:41# Text the number

0:27:41 > 0:27:43# Text the number

0:27:43 > 0:27:44# Get your phone out

0:28:30 > 0:28:32I'm PC McLaren. I'd like to ask you a few questions

0:28:32 > 0:28:34about your association with a local crime family.

0:28:34 > 0:28:35What is this?

0:28:35 > 0:28:37It's just a few questions, it's nothing to worry about.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39Oh, no, I get it.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41You're...

0:28:41 > 0:28:44Ah, you're trying to make up with me with a whole...

0:28:44 > 0:28:46role-play thing?

0:28:46 > 0:28:49Sorry? Yeah, you wear a uniform well.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51Looks good on you. I know.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54You know, I never really go in for the whole...

0:28:54 > 0:28:56man in a uniform type thing,

0:28:56 > 0:28:58but I think that's about to change.

0:28:59 > 0:29:00I understand.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03It's a perfectly natural feeling for you to want to get aff with me,

0:29:03 > 0:29:04but you'll need to wait till I'm off shift.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07But I really do need to ask you some questions first.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Oh, you are really getting into character, aren't you?

0:29:10 > 0:29:12I'd love to see your bedside manner, I really would.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15I mean, you're a very attractive woman. You're...

0:29:15 > 0:29:17You're an eight or a nine and I'm a ten,

0:29:17 > 0:29:18so that would average us out at...

0:29:20 > 0:29:21..7.5?

0:29:22 > 0:29:23DOOR OPENS

0:29:30 > 0:29:31Annie, I...

0:29:31 > 0:29:33I know I'm not your favourite person right now, but...

0:30:15 > 0:30:17Right, well, thank you very much,

0:30:17 > 0:30:19but my love life is complicated enough.

0:30:23 > 0:30:24What's in the bag?

0:30:24 > 0:30:26Em, what's it got to do with you?

0:30:26 > 0:30:28Something you don't want me to see?

0:30:28 > 0:30:29What makes you think that?

0:30:29 > 0:30:31Open it and let me see.

0:30:31 > 0:30:33No. Open it.

0:30:33 > 0:30:34Make me.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54a donation for Children In Need.

0:30:56 > 0:30:57Well, it's not safe for a civilian

0:30:57 > 0:30:59to be carrying around this much cash,

0:30:59 > 0:31:01so I'll keep it safe,

0:31:01 > 0:31:03and make sure it finds its way to Children In Need.

0:31:03 > 0:31:05That's not necessary, I can manage.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08Well, police have friends in high places.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10I'll make sure it ends up in the right hands.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12Well, thank you for your time, Dr Jandhu.

0:31:12 > 0:31:15It has been a pleasure.

0:31:51 > 0:31:52give her peace of mind.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55That's the level of service I like to offer to members of the public,

0:31:55 > 0:31:58and I'll certainly be giving it to the doctor.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Did you see that Alex?

0:32:00 > 0:32:02He was dashing, he looked like Poldark.

0:32:02 > 0:32:04Does he remind you of me?

0:32:05 > 0:32:07No! You?!

0:32:07 > 0:32:10We'd better get to... Cos the job never stops.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13Yeah, we've been called to another Scottish town up north -

0:32:13 > 0:32:14Balamory.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Some brightly coloured houses are causing a bit of a nuisance.

0:32:17 > 0:32:19And there's continual singing, so...

0:32:19 > 0:32:23We've got to liaise with a PC Plum,

0:32:23 > 0:32:25and find out what's the story.

0:32:26 > 0:32:27In this Balamory.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30We'd like to know.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04Over ?2.5 million of your cash supports

0:33:04 > 0:33:06children in Scotland with disabilities.

0:33:06 > 0:33:07GAME BEEPS

0:33:07 > 0:33:0914-year-old Josiah lives in Edinburgh.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12Like most teenagers, he's transfixed with technology.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16But there's a difference between him and his peers

0:33:16 > 0:33:17that isolated him growing up.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23When Josiah was a toddler, we used to take him to playgroups,

0:33:23 > 0:33:26and realised he wouldn't associate himself with the others.

0:33:27 > 0:33:28He couldn't talk,

0:33:28 > 0:33:31so if he wanted to get reaction from the other kids,

0:33:31 > 0:33:32he would push them.

0:33:34 > 0:33:35And most of the parents didn't like that.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39He would see people...

0:33:40 > 0:33:42..taking their kids away.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44The rejection hit hard.

0:33:44 > 0:33:47Aged three, Josiah was diagnosed with autism,

0:33:47 > 0:33:50a disability that affects how he relates to others.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53I didn't know anything about autism, then.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Initially, it was difficult for me.

0:33:57 > 0:34:01So finding a school with a headteacher who supported Josiah

0:34:01 > 0:34:02was a huge relief.

0:34:02 > 0:34:06Josiah is a lovely, happy young person.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09With numbers, he is an absolute star.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13He will memorise numbers and sequences and codes...

0:34:13 > 0:34:15It's an amazing talent.

0:34:15 > 0:34:19But figuring out the world around him isn't always easy for Josiah.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22At times, it can seem confusing and unpredictable.

0:34:27 > 0:34:31What he's getting is a bombardment of information into his head.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36It can be quite a scary place,

0:34:36 > 0:34:41there's lots of different sensory things going on such as lights,

0:34:41 > 0:34:47music, gadgets, technology, other people that will distract him.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52What he's finding is that's overstimulating

0:34:52 > 0:34:57and it just takes his focus in all sorts of different directions.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00One way that Josiah's found to help him deal with

0:35:00 > 0:35:03everything in his brain is through is body.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06He's always running and jumping.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09He's always constantly running and jumping.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16Josiah can bounce the whole day if you don't stop him,

0:35:16 > 0:35:18if you don't ask him, "Josiah, sit down."

0:35:19 > 0:35:22It's quite a challenge to keep him calm.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24Josiah.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26It's quite a big challenge.

0:35:26 > 0:35:30You want some grapes? Yeah. Do you want to calm down first? No.

0:35:30 > 0:35:34But Josiah's enthusiasm for movement became a concern

0:35:34 > 0:35:37when it began to affect his balance.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40Josiah used to fall for no reason.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42He will be walking and all of a sudden say,

0:35:42 > 0:35:44"Oh, Daddy, I fell down."

0:35:44 > 0:35:46The falls became more hazardous.

0:35:46 > 0:35:52When he was coming down the stairs, you will hear, "Ouch! I fell!"

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I couldn't explain why he fell.

0:35:55 > 0:36:02That was when I began having concerns about him injuring himself.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Keeping Josiah safe from physical harm became a full-time job

0:36:05 > 0:36:09for his family, so when school offered an activity

0:36:09 > 0:36:13that would help him focus his energy, they jumped at the chance.

0:36:13 > 0:36:17Your donations support Josiah and 25 other kids from his school

0:36:17 > 0:36:20attend weekly ski sessions.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23For Josiah, it's a chance to practise his social skills outwith

0:36:23 > 0:36:25the safety of school and home.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28OK, my man, what size are you? Size ten. Size ten, pal.

0:36:38 > 0:36:43Most days, autism makes it a struggle for Josiah to feel independent,

0:36:43 > 0:36:47but on the slopes, it's a different story.

0:36:47 > 0:36:51Well done, Josiah. This is brilliant skiing.

0:36:51 > 0:36:55'He likes the speed, he likes the freedom.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57'When he was skiing and doing his turns,

0:36:57 > 0:37:01'he was in a zone and he was concentrating on his turns.

0:37:01 > 0:37:03'Boy, does it ground him.'

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Look down a wee bit.

0:37:05 > 0:37:09Skiing offers Josiah the chance to channel his physical energy,

0:37:09 > 0:37:11but that's not all.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14He's very, very outgoing now.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17I like skiing because it's fun. OK.

0:37:17 > 0:37:21His new hobby has given him the confidence to reach new heights.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24He can now go to the top on the chair lift.

0:37:24 > 0:37:28I think Josiah is very pleased with himself.

0:37:28 > 0:37:29Right, go!

0:37:29 > 0:37:31I did it!

0:37:31 > 0:37:34The first time he went up there, he came back and was like,

0:37:34 > 0:37:36"I went to the very top!"

0:37:36 > 0:37:38You could see that excitement in him.

0:37:38 > 0:37:40"I went to the very top!"

0:37:40 > 0:37:42Look at that view.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47It's just a wonderful feeling seeing him being able to reach his potential.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53He can ski independently.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55It's lovely to see.

0:37:55 > 0:37:58In fact, Josiah's balance has improved so much

0:37:58 > 0:38:00there's been another major benefit.

0:38:01 > 0:38:05He's not falling ever since he started skiing.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08He just loves it.

0:38:08 > 0:38:10When he comes back sometimes he says,

0:38:10 > 0:38:13"Daddy, I am the ski champion!"

0:38:14 > 0:38:17And he likes to tell us how fast he was going.

0:38:17 > 0:38:21When I saw him I was like, "Wow!"

0:38:21 > 0:38:24I had never thought he had that ability.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26He's really done well,

0:38:26 > 0:38:28and that made me very, very proud of him.

0:38:48 > 0:38:49KNOCKING

0:38:49 > 0:38:52This is the Maggie's Centre in Glasgow,

0:38:52 > 0:38:56a place where people diagnosed with cancer and their families

0:38:56 > 0:38:59can visit for some much-needed support.

0:38:59 > 0:39:03To have anyone in your family diagnosed with cancer is devastating.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06Our next film is a very moving story.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10It shows how your money allows Maggie's to help children

0:39:10 > 0:39:12deal with that situation.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21My mum is really fast.

0:39:22 > 0:39:26She's very sporty, she does loads of exercise.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31She's very fit, yeah.

0:39:31 > 0:39:36She just goes out and runs and she's done races before,

0:39:36 > 0:39:38she's faster than her friends.

0:39:40 > 0:39:44Running and playing sport, I love it.

0:39:44 > 0:39:48I think as long as I can keep doing that, and the kids, as long as they

0:39:48 > 0:39:51can keep seeing me doing all the things I love, they think I'm OK.

0:39:53 > 0:39:57Six years ago, Annette was diagnosed with cancer.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01Since then it's been a constant presence in her family's life.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07Your initial urge is to protect the children.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12There are times when everything's fine and then suddenly

0:40:12 > 0:40:16I'm diagnosed again with something else, and that is scary for them.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19You struggle to know how you're going to deal with it.

0:40:19 > 0:40:20How do you speak to kids about that?

0:40:20 > 0:40:23Nobody's got the experience, really, to be able to do that.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26That was one of the most difficult things.

0:40:26 > 0:40:28I worry about my mum quite a lot.

0:40:28 > 0:40:35Every time she gets cancer or every time something happens,

0:40:35 > 0:40:38it's just a bit scary.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41This, everything, you know, the sickness in the bathroom,

0:40:41 > 0:40:43everything, they're aware of what's going on,

0:40:43 > 0:40:46and there's no hiding that.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49It hurts me to see them having to deal with this.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53During these difficult times,

0:40:53 > 0:40:57Annette and her children turn to Maggie's - a group of centres across

0:40:57 > 0:41:01the UK that support all sorts of families who are facing cancer.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05For Annette, Maggie's was just across the road

0:41:05 > 0:41:08from where she was being treated in Edinburgh.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12When I was having my last IV chemotherapy, I looked out of

0:41:12 > 0:41:18the window to see the kids joyously playing at Maggie's.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21It was just fantastic.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24I knew from that moment on that they would be OK.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27LAUGHTER

0:41:27 > 0:41:30Yeah, exactly, that was from one of the kids' days that we had.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32Somebody got a bit enthusiastic with red paint.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35Don't get any ideas, by the way. You're not going to do that.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38Maggie's has just been phenomenal. I mean, it really has.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40Tell me what you're going to do this time.

0:41:40 > 0:41:42Thomas and Amelia can go and they can talk to Andrew about things.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45You know, they can talk openly about treatment,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48about hair falling out, about all sorts of things,

0:41:48 > 0:41:52and they just feel that comfort and reassurance.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54Maggie's is about having a space to talk about feelings,

0:41:54 > 0:41:57but trying to make sure it's not done in a pushy way,

0:41:57 > 0:42:01to try and to give kids particularly a range of different angles

0:42:01 > 0:42:04to think about how they might express what's going on for them.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06'It's normal to feel worried,

0:42:06 > 0:42:08'it's normal to feel anxious and a bit frightened,

0:42:08 > 0:42:10'but talking about it can make a real difference.'

0:42:10 > 0:42:12He understands.

0:42:13 > 0:42:19Andrew would like kind of explain stuff more...

0:42:19 > 0:42:22and I wouldn't really talk to anyone else, I don't think.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31In July, 2015, Annette was told that her cancer had spread...

0:42:33 > 0:42:35..and this time it was incurable.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39We spoke to the kids straightaway.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41We just sat down on the bed one night

0:42:41 > 0:42:44and they could tell we were really upset.

0:42:44 > 0:42:48And just said to them, "Things have got really bad.

0:42:48 > 0:42:52"And it's in Mummy's bones and bone marrow."

0:42:52 > 0:42:54It was hard, really hard.

0:42:56 > 0:42:58And we just all had a cry for about an hour.

0:42:58 > 0:43:01And then the first thing they asked for was Maggie's.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05Because of your donations,

0:43:05 > 0:43:08Maggie's was there to support the children once again,

0:43:08 > 0:43:11and it will be there in the future.

0:43:11 > 0:43:16It just worries me because I don't know what's happening next.

0:43:16 > 0:43:21When I talk about it I let out my feelings, it makes me feel better.

0:43:23 > 0:43:28The uncertainty for the kids is something that worries me constantly.

0:43:28 > 0:43:32It's not knowing and not knowing how they will be able to cope with things.

0:43:32 > 0:43:36And I want to spend every moment with them,

0:43:36 > 0:43:40but I don't know where I'm going to be in six months' time or a year.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43I just want them to enjoy life and be happy,

0:43:43 > 0:43:47and to me, it's a comfort knowing that Maggie's is there for them.

0:44:12 > 0:44:15The money you've given to Children In Need

0:44:15 > 0:44:17helps many charities like Maggie's,

0:44:17 > 0:44:21groups that rely on donations just to keep going,

0:44:21 > 0:44:24and as you saw with Annette and Thomas and Amelia,

0:44:24 > 0:44:28the work you support can be life-changing.

0:44:28 > 0:44:30Let's have some more music now

0:44:30 > 0:44:34and a beautiful rendition of God Only Knows from Michael Buble.

0:44:57 > 0:45:03# I may not always love you

0:45:05 > 0:45:10# But long as there are stars above you

0:45:12 > 0:45:16# You never need to doubt it

0:45:18 > 0:45:23# I'll make you so sure about it

0:45:26 > 0:45:31# God only knows what I'd be without you

0:45:38 > 0:45:43# If you should ever leave me

0:45:44 > 0:45:49# Though life would still go on, believe me

0:45:51 > 0:45:56# The world could show nothing to me

0:45:58 > 0:46:02# So what good would livin' do me?

0:46:05 > 0:46:10# God only knows what I'd be without you

0:46:17 > 0:46:22# God only knows what I'd be without you

0:46:55 > 0:47:02# God only knows what I'd be without you

0:47:07 > 0:47:10# If you should ever leave me

0:47:13 > 0:47:17# Then life would still go on, believe me

0:47:20 > 0:47:24# The world could show nothing to me

0:47:27 > 0:47:32# But what good would living do me?

0:47:37 > 0:47:43# God only knows what I'd be without you

0:47:50 > 0:47:55# God only knows what I'd be without you

0:48:02 > 0:48:05# God only knows

0:48:06 > 0:48:10# What I'd be without you. #

0:48:32 > 0:48:35APPLAUSE

0:48:35 > 0:48:39Since 1990, a staggering ?90 million has been distributed

0:48:39 > 0:48:41to groups in Scotland.

0:48:41 > 0:48:45Every penny you donate will help change a young person's life.

0:48:45 > 0:48:49Young people like Leah, who battles every day with chronic pain.

0:48:51 > 0:48:5412-year-old Leah lives with a painful condition

0:48:54 > 0:48:55that controls her life.

0:48:55 > 0:48:59I've had arthritis as long as I can remember.

0:48:59 > 0:49:02She was five when diagnosed with arthritis.

0:49:02 > 0:49:05I don't remember ever being pain-free.

0:49:07 > 0:49:10The condition affects almost every joint in Leah's body.

0:49:10 > 0:49:15Mostly, it's my knees, my ankles and my jaw.

0:49:15 > 0:49:18My legs especially will get very stiff

0:49:18 > 0:49:21and it will be really hard to move them.

0:49:21 > 0:49:24I've had problems with my fingers as well.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26It can be absolute agony.

0:49:27 > 0:49:31Leah's life has to be scheduled around taking her medicine.

0:49:31 > 0:49:33Without it, things would be very different.

0:49:33 > 0:49:38If I didn't have a weekly injection, I don't think I'd be able to walk.

0:49:39 > 0:49:42I don't want to be stuck in a wheelchair because that's what

0:49:42 > 0:49:45will happen if I don't have Methotrexate.

0:49:47 > 0:49:49But even with medication,

0:49:49 > 0:49:52pain stills dominates Leah's life.

0:49:53 > 0:49:55I do hide the pain...

0:49:57 > 0:49:59..for as long as I can.

0:49:59 > 0:50:03I'll stretch the joints that are sore.

0:50:03 > 0:50:08It's quite tricky to tell someone without arthritis

0:50:08 > 0:50:14how it feels to have a pain in your legs or wherever it is.

0:50:14 > 0:50:18Managing her arthritis can be a lonely experience for Leah.

0:50:18 > 0:50:23It could be so sore my emotions get the better of me

0:50:23 > 0:50:27and I can start to cry because it is so painful.

0:50:31 > 0:50:34Your donations support a project that helps Leah.

0:50:34 > 0:50:39Arthritis Care organises activities for kids from across Scotland.

0:50:39 > 0:50:42For Leah, it's a chance to socialise with others

0:50:42 > 0:50:44who live with the condition.

0:50:44 > 0:50:48It's a relief to be able to just sit with people that have got arthritis.

0:50:48 > 0:50:51They know what it's like to be stiff or to be sore.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54You're like trying to explain your pain to a colour-blind person.

0:50:54 > 0:50:57You can't explain a colour to a colour-blind person. Yeah.

0:50:57 > 0:50:59And if you haven't experienced our pain,

0:50:59 > 0:51:01then you won't know what that pain feels like.

0:51:01 > 0:51:05I can be myself with no judgements about how my arthritis affects me

0:51:05 > 0:51:07because everyone in the room is the same.

0:51:07 > 0:51:10Today, the group is learning practical tips that will help

0:51:10 > 0:51:12them at home and school.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15Knowing your limits, so don't do too much. Yeah, good.

0:51:15 > 0:51:19A little time is spent relaxing big muscles in the body.

0:51:20 > 0:51:24Think about your calves.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27Your calves are warm.

0:51:27 > 0:51:30Heavy...

0:51:30 > 0:51:33Now it's on to the small muscle workout.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36You are going to start trying to make the person across from you

0:51:36 > 0:51:38laugh and giggle using your face.

0:51:39 > 0:51:41THEY GIGGLE

0:51:48 > 0:51:51Spending time with other kids who understand how she feels

0:51:51 > 0:51:54really improves Leah's life.
