0:35:51 > 0:35:53Thank you, Wembley!

0:35:53 > 0:35:56Leee John in the house!

0:35:58 > 0:36:00Wow! I mean, Leee John showing us how it's done.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03Ladies and gentlemen, that wasn't just an illusion,

0:36:03 > 0:36:05that just happened. Wasn't that fabulous?

0:36:05 > 0:36:09- Sure did.- Thank you very much to the very vivid Imagination.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11I was worried that wearing sequins tonight would be too much,

0:36:11 > 0:36:14- but I think I'm OK.- You're fine.

0:36:14 > 0:36:19Now, like me, BBC Children In Need is a child of the '80s,

0:36:19 > 0:36:20but they've given us

0:36:20 > 0:36:23so much more than just shoulder pads and rainbow legwarmers.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26Yeah, one of the projects they fund is Back Up,

0:36:26 > 0:36:29and we want to tell you about an 11-year-old lad called Sam

0:36:29 > 0:36:32and how his life has been completely transformed,

0:36:32 > 0:36:34all thanks to your donations.

0:36:38 > 0:36:40SAM: Sport was the thing I enjoyed the most.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47That's the thing I looked forward to. It was always sport.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50And then when it got taken away from me, it was sort of like...

0:36:50 > 0:36:56..it was sort of like there's nothing which I enjoy any more.

0:36:56 > 0:37:01Two years ago, Sam was playing in a rugby match for his local team.

0:37:01 > 0:37:03I played for about three quarters of the game

0:37:03 > 0:37:08and then I felt a big pull down the left hamstring

0:37:08 > 0:37:10and collapsed.

0:37:13 > 0:37:15The consultant just came and said to me

0:37:15 > 0:37:18that Samuel had had a spinal stroke.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24And that it meant that he was paraplegic.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26He'd damaged his spinal cord

0:37:26 > 0:37:29and it would mean that he wasn't able to walk.

0:37:32 > 0:37:35How do you tell your son that?

0:37:35 > 0:37:38How do you go back and break that news?

0:37:38 > 0:37:41It's just so hard.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47Then when my mum told me, I got really upset.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52It was hard to get to sleep that night.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57We just sat there, numb.

0:37:57 > 0:38:01What had happened to our little boy, you know, who loved life,

0:38:01 > 0:38:05loved charging about, like any other little boy?

0:38:05 > 0:38:06And what were we going to do?

0:38:08 > 0:38:10I didn't really want to do anything.

0:38:10 > 0:38:15I went to watch all my mates play, and I just felt so sad.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21Sometimes you feel really helpless.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Hello, Sam.

0:38:23 > 0:38:24You're just thinking,

0:38:24 > 0:38:28"I don't know who to turn to. Who's there to support us?"

0:38:29 > 0:38:33But there WAS someone there to turn to.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36Back Up, a charity that offers help to children like Sam,

0:38:36 > 0:38:38following life-changing spinal cord injuries.

0:38:38 > 0:38:40They can see us...

0:38:40 > 0:38:43I just enjoy, like, the sense of excitement.

0:38:44 > 0:38:47It just sprung my confidence up in a massive way.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51It's made me feel more like I fit in.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53Out of the way!

0:38:53 > 0:38:55Back Up gave him the confidence,

0:38:55 > 0:38:58gave him the adventure that he was after.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00THEY CHEER

0:39:00 > 0:39:02He's been able to talk to other people

0:39:02 > 0:39:04that have went through a similar experience

0:39:04 > 0:39:08and actually feed off some of the things that they've achieved.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14Through Back Up, Sam met Ella, the charity's under-18s manager.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17She is funded entirely by Children In Need.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20Back Up connects people.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23Sam is doing amazing.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25It's really positive to see because being able to

0:39:25 > 0:39:29talk to other people that can relate to what you're going through

0:39:29 > 0:39:31and hear things that they're doing

0:39:31 > 0:39:34focuses you more on what is still possible,

0:39:34 > 0:39:36rather than what you've lost.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38So, when I had my injury when I was 10...

0:39:38 > 0:39:41SAM: Ella, she's just inspirational.

0:39:41 > 0:39:45She goes to different countries and she's done all this stuff.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48When I was over there in New Zealand, I did a skydive.

0:39:48 > 0:39:52With inspiration from people like that, that's one of the reasons

0:39:52 > 0:39:55why I feel like I'm so more positive now.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56Nicely done, Sam.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58You can do anything you want.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01Right, you're in control of this now, all right?

0:40:01 > 0:40:03We're incredibly proud of him.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06When you've seen him at the lowest,

0:40:06 > 0:40:10it is just really great to see him back with a smile on his face,

0:40:10 > 0:40:17enjoying life, embracing life, doing what an 11-year-old should be doing.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23Tonight, you can help more children just like Sam.

0:55:28 > 0:55:32And I walked into the room and it was filled with about 10 people.

0:55:32 > 0:55:35And they were all there because of Harry.

0:55:35 > 0:55:38And they said, "We've found the matter is.

0:55:38 > 0:55:42"And unfortunately he's got a very rare genetic disease

0:55:42 > 0:55:44"called Niemann-Pick Type C."

0:55:48 > 0:55:50And I just felt devastation.

0:55:51 > 0:55:57Niemann-Pick is very rare, affecting only one in 120,000 people.

0:55:57 > 0:56:01A build-up of fats in the brain surely shuts down the body.

0:56:01 > 0:56:04There is no cure, and the disease is terminal.

0:56:04 > 0:56:07For somebody to come along and say the outcome is...

0:56:09 > 0:56:14..um, not good, then it's just disbelief.

0:56:14 > 0:56:18You just start grieving for the child

0:56:18 > 0:56:22that you had a picture of in your mind, growing up.

0:56:24 > 0:56:28Harry's twin sisters, Emily and Grace, are 18 months younger

0:56:28 > 0:56:31than their brother, and after receiving Harry's diagnosis,

0:56:31 > 0:56:34parents Fiona and Carl decided to get the girls tested.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36They won't leave you alone, will they, Harry?!

0:56:36 > 0:56:40Deep down, we did have a suspicion that Grace had Niemann-Pick,

0:56:40 > 0:56:44but we didn't want to know. We didn't want to hear the words.

0:56:44 > 0:56:48When we got the news that she had it, it was absolutely devastating.

0:56:48 > 0:56:52Just as the family were coming to terms with Grace's diagnosis,

0:56:52 > 0:56:56at the age of seven, Harry's health deteriorated quickly.

0:56:56 > 0:56:58What's she doing to you, Harry?

0:56:58 > 0:57:02He went to bed normally, and when we woke in the morning,

0:57:02 > 0:57:06he was struggling, really struggling to breathe.

0:57:07 > 0:57:09And...

0:57:12 > 0:57:15He passed away in our arms, didn't he? In the bed.

0:57:18 > 0:57:23These two are of Harry, but that was when he was in hospital.

0:57:23 > 0:57:28I like having them because I can just remember him by them.

0:57:30 > 0:57:33I think Emily likes to keep his memory alive. She always has done.

0:57:33 > 0:57:36She's never stopped talking about him.

0:57:36 > 0:57:37I really like this photo

0:57:37 > 0:57:40because one night I just wanted to stay in Harry's bed.

0:57:42 > 0:57:47So my mum let me. And we were just up all night giggling at each other.

0:57:48 > 0:57:51This is a photo of me and Grace.

0:57:51 > 0:57:55And I just really like it cos Grace has one in her room,

0:57:55 > 0:57:57and I have one in my room.

0:57:59 > 0:58:01Emily and Grace are now 12.

0:58:01 > 0:58:03And seven years after Harry passed away,

0:58:03 > 0:58:07the disease has started to take its toll on Grace.

0:58:07 > 0:58:11- It's been quite sudden with Grace. - She can't stand.

0:58:11 > 0:58:14She's struggling now to even lift her arms.

0:58:14 > 0:58:16What you doing?

0:58:16 > 0:58:22She started to lose her ability to walk probably a year and a half ago.

0:58:22 > 0:58:25She was still on her feet a year and a half ago.

0:58:25 > 0:58:29You can tell when she's being cheeky with her eyes. She's never grumpy.

0:58:29 > 0:58:32She's always smiling.

0:58:32 > 0:58:36Since the first moment that Harry was diagnosed, the family have

0:58:36 > 0:58:39been in touch with the charity Niemann-Pick UK.

0:58:39 > 0:58:42They provide practical and emotional support

0:58:42 > 0:58:44for sufferers and their families.

0:58:44 > 0:58:48I couldn't imagine not having the charity, really.

0:58:48 > 0:58:51I think we'd feel so isolated.

0:58:51 > 0:58:55Your donations help fund specialist nurse Laura, who works

0:58:55 > 0:58:59across the country, helping families and those around them

0:58:59 > 0:59:01understand and cope with the disease.

0:59:01 > 0:59:03This is an incurable disease,

0:59:03 > 0:59:07but there are developments, there are treatments, and hope.

0:59:07 > 0:59:09And you can't take hope away from families.

0:59:09 > 0:59:13And we need to support them in every way, in every aspect we can.

0:59:13 > 0:59:16The charity also brings families together once a year

0:59:16 > 0:59:19for a conference, a vital space for families to bond.

0:59:19 > 0:59:21She's grown quite a lot.

0:59:21 > 0:59:23We are very fortunate to have Niemann-Pick UK

0:59:23 > 0:59:27cos a lot of rare diseases don't have the same level of support

0:59:27 > 0:59:28that we receive.

0:59:28 > 0:59:33Without Children In Need funding, families wouldn't have access to

0:59:33 > 0:59:36the knowledge and care needed to deal with this devastating,

0:59:36 > 0:59:38life-limiting disease.

0:59:40 > 0:59:43A completely heartbreaking film to watch,

0:59:43 > 0:59:46yet so much strength and courage from the family.

0:59:46 > 0:59:49It's thanks to grants from BBC Children In Need that

0:59:49 > 0:59:53organisations like Niemann-Pick UK can do this amazing work,

1:14:21 > 1:14:22Love the pirate hats, to be honest.

1:14:22 > 1:14:25Right now I'm joined, of course, by the legendary Europe.

1:14:25 > 1:14:27Guys, how are you? Feeling good today?

1:14:27 > 1:14:29Feeling good, it's great to be here.

1:14:29 > 1:14:31Now guys, it's such an important day as well,

1:14:31 > 1:14:34and doing this for Children In Need.

1:14:34 > 1:14:36What does it mean being here for you guys?

1:14:36 > 1:14:38Kids, you know?

1:14:38 > 1:14:40I've lived in the UK, I've lived in London for so many years,

1:14:40 > 1:14:43and Children In Need is a big thing.

1:14:43 > 1:14:47- It's huge.- Yes. And now, guys, you are closing the show today.

1:14:47 > 1:14:51What does it mean to be closing the show with such a big number?

1:14:51 > 1:14:55It's amazing, and The Final Countdown is the main song to close

1:14:55 > 1:14:57any show, I would say.

1:14:57 > 1:15:00Open or close or any time. The Final Countdown is the...

1:15:00 > 1:15:02HE MOUTHS

1:15:02 > 1:15:05That's it. You heard it from the guys themselves.

1:15:05 > 1:15:08The Final Countdown is nigh, it's very close.

1:15:08 > 1:15:10Can't wait to see these guys. Europe are going to be on stage.

1:15:10 > 1:15:12Guys, back to you.

1:15:13 > 1:15:15Roman, thank you very much.

1:15:15 > 1:15:19Now, life can be very confusing for a teenager,

1:15:19 > 1:15:23and even more so when they lose someone close.

1:15:23 > 1:15:27BBC Children In Need helps young people to get through the hard

1:15:27 > 1:15:32times by reaching out, listening, and sometimes just by being there.

1:15:32 > 1:15:37Here's a story of two incredible young people called Amy and Greg.

1:15:37 > 1:15:40They've suffered a devastating loss to their family,

1:15:40 > 1:15:44but they are rebuilding their lives and treasuring their memories.

1:15:44 > 1:15:52I think the thing that I miss the most about my mum is her hugs.

1:15:52 > 1:15:55I think about Mum every day, mostly. Just some...

1:15:55 > 1:15:57Just my mind will start thinking

1:15:57 > 1:15:59and then it'll just instantly drag back to Mum.

1:15:59 > 1:16:02In 2013 the Baxter family were rocked

1:16:02 > 1:16:07by the news that their mum, Dawn, had ovarian cancer.

1:16:07 > 1:16:09You're heartbroken that the one you love

1:16:09 > 1:16:11has got this horrendous disease.

1:16:11 > 1:16:13And then we had to sit down and tell the kids.

1:16:13 > 1:16:16And I would say that's the worst hour of my life.

1:16:16 > 1:16:18I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

1:16:18 > 1:16:22Last October, after a three-year battle with the disease, the family

1:16:22 > 1:16:25were told that Dawn's cancer had spread,

1:16:25 > 1:16:26and that she would not recover.

1:16:26 > 1:16:28Mum was looking more frail,

1:16:28 > 1:16:31she wouldn't eat much. It was quite scary.

1:16:32 > 1:16:35I didn't want her to see me upset,

1:16:35 > 1:16:41and I didn't want her to know how much it, like, hurt.

1:16:41 > 1:16:43With Dawn's health failing,

1:16:43 > 1:16:47she was moved into Rowans Hospice for her end-of-life care.

1:16:47 > 1:16:49It was here that Amy and Greg

1:16:49 > 1:16:52were introduced to Sophie, who runs the Meerkat Service.

1:16:52 > 1:16:55They wanted to be with Mum, they wanted to be here at the hospice,

1:16:55 > 1:16:58but sometimes being in a loved-one's bedroom

1:16:58 > 1:17:02when there is so much grief can be overwhelming for children.

1:17:02 > 1:17:04The Rowans Meerkat Service offers support

1:17:04 > 1:17:07and a safe space for children as they try to cope with

1:17:07 > 1:17:10the complicated emotions around death.

1:17:10 > 1:17:12Dawn said that she wanted to see Christmas with the family,

1:17:12 > 1:17:15that was her aim, and the good news was

1:17:15 > 1:17:18that she did make it to Christmas Day before she passed.

1:17:19 > 1:17:22Dad picked up the phone and left the room.

1:17:23 > 1:17:26None of us really said anything.

1:17:26 > 1:17:29And then he came back in and he just said that she'd gone.

1:17:29 > 1:17:32And that she wasn't with us any more.

1:17:33 > 1:17:35It's almost a sense of...

1:17:35 > 1:17:39I don't want to say relief, but that she wasn't suffering any more.

1:17:39 > 1:17:41That she wasn't in pain.

1:17:41 > 1:17:44My whole body kind of felt numb.

1:17:44 > 1:17:49You don't really know how to feel when you find out stuff like that.

1:17:51 > 1:17:54Since they lost their mum, Amy and Greg have both received help from

1:17:54 > 1:17:58the Meerkat Service, taking part in group and one-to-one sessions.

1:17:58 > 1:18:01It can be the littlest thing, but it triggers a memory.

1:18:01 > 1:18:03With the support of Children In Need,

1:18:03 > 1:18:06the Meerkat Service helps hundreds of children deal with

1:18:06 > 1:18:10the deep emotional trauma of losing a loved one.

1:18:10 > 1:18:13And I guess sadness can be a mixture of feelings as well.

1:18:13 > 1:18:15I think it's very difficult as a parent,

1:18:15 > 1:18:18because you are trying to deal with your own grief in your own way,

1:18:18 > 1:18:20and yet you're also trying to support your kids

1:18:20 > 1:18:22dealing with their grief.

1:18:22 > 1:18:26We should never underestimate that the loss of a parent or

1:18:26 > 1:18:28a significant other person for a child.

1:18:28 > 1:18:30But actually, with the right support,

1:18:30 > 1:18:32they can manage what's happened.

1:18:34 > 1:18:37They come out of every one of these sessions with smiles on their faces.

1:18:37 > 1:18:40I think it's doing them the world of good.

1:18:40 > 1:18:42I want everyone to know about my mum,

1:18:42 > 1:18:45and I think to tell Sophie about my mum

1:18:45 > 1:18:49was...one of the best feelings.

1:18:49 > 1:18:54Without the Meerkat Service, I don't know where we'd be now.

1:18:54 > 1:18:59The Meerkat Service does incredible work in providing care

1:18:59 > 1:19:01and support for grieving children,

1:19:01 > 1:19:05helping them to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.

1:19:05 > 1:19:08Young people like Greg and Amy need your support,

1:19:08 > 1:19:11so please pick up your phone and make a donation.

1:19:11 > 1:19:14You can choose to donate £5, £10 or £20.

1:19:32 > 1:19:35the terms and conditions, are on your screen now.
