0:00:45 > 0:00:47If I could win Britain's Brightest, it would be incredible.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51It's really important to show that actually being bright is a really good thing.

0:00:51 > 0:00:56But just one can win £50,000 and be crowned Britain's Brightest.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59The other contestants do need to watch out.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your host, Clare Balding.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:34 > 0:01:36that is testing the power of the brain.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40It's all about sharp thinking, and we'll test every part

0:01:40 > 0:01:43of the mind, from spelling to maths,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46logic, emotions, puzzles and memory.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51Our team has found 24 amazing minds and tonight, six of them

0:01:51 > 0:01:55will compete for a place in the final and a £50,000 first prize.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:57 > 0:02:00So, let's meet out first two contestants.

0:02:02 > 0:02:07I'm Clare, I live in Warrington. No, I don't. That's rubbish!

0:02:07 > 0:02:09SHE LAUGHS

0:02:09 > 0:02:11I'm Clare. I live in London,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13but I'm originally from Warrington and I'm a midwife.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16I think there's lots and lots of reasons why I love being a midwife,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20but the main thing really is about being part of somebody's memories.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23You meet somebody as soon as they're pregnant and you see them

0:02:23 > 0:02:26all the way through until their baby's kind of three or four

0:02:26 > 0:02:29weeks old, and it's just a really lovely experience.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34On a daily basis I multi-task and I work well under pressure.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37I have to read people's emotions.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I think emotional intelligence is one of my strengths.

0:02:39 > 0:02:45I'm not convinced I'll be massively wonderful at my English or spelling, things like that.

0:02:47 > 0:02:53Generally people see me as kind of the bubbly blonde that's maybe not so intelligent.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Keep an eye out, because I think I'm somebody that will maybe go

0:02:57 > 0:03:02under the radar a little bit and then come to bite them on the bum!

0:03:03 > 0:03:08My name's Lynn. I come from Old Dilton, which is a tiny hamlet in Wiltshire, and I'm a childminder.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13I have the same IQ as Einstein, which is 153.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14But he couldn't add up and I can.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19That's a bit rude, isn't it, poor Einstein.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22I have a daughter called Erin.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25She's 19 and I've been a single parent to her all my life.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29- Oh, not all my life, obviously. - SHE LAUGHS

0:03:29 > 0:03:31I'm absolutely so proud of her.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Erin does quite a lot of showjumping with her horse, Fred,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36and this is her rosette board.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38This is Freddie. He's really, really good at showjumping.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41He's like a jumping machine.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Erin is absolutely ecstatic that I'm going on Britain's Brightest.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47She's always got an answer to everything.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51I think one of my attributes is that I'm quite self-assured and I'm quite calm under pressure.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Yes, she's really, like, as cool as a cucumber.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57If I won Britain's Brightest, I'd like to go on a world tour with Erin.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Oh, my God!

0:03:59 > 0:04:01I know that I can do anything that's put in front of me,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04so the other contestants should not underestimate me.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06I'm a bit wary of saying things like that,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10because I could go on there and make a complete idiot of myself!

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Please welcome Clare and Lynn.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:04:25 > 0:04:27- Hello, you two.- Hello, Clare. - Welcome to the show.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31- Thank you.- Thank you very much. - You're quite excited about being on, aren't you, Clare?

0:04:31 > 0:04:32Just a little.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36- How do you show that you're really excited? - TAPS FEET RAPIDLY

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- LAUGHTER - Now listen, last year, London 2012, extraordinary experience,

0:04:39 > 0:04:41it was for me and I know it was for you, as well.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45It certainly was, yeah. I was lucky enough to be one of the volunteers,

0:04:45 > 0:04:50so I was an NOC Assistant and looked after Team Namibia.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54So I got the really difficult task of, kind of, ferrying them around

0:04:54 > 0:04:59to the events and had to go and watch some amazing sport in amazing seats.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Really tough, I find. Very difficult isn't it?

0:05:01 > 0:05:04You just think, "how can I carry on doing this"?

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Yeah. For my country, I did it. LAUGHTER

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Now Lynn, in terms of your brightness,

0:05:09 > 0:05:11what do you think you've got up here?

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Well, I know I've got a brain that works well.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18I always seem to know the answer when other people don't seem to know,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20so I kind of feel I've got an edge somewhere.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25I can't quite define it, but I just know that I am quite bright.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28And your daughter Erin says that you are cool under pressure,

0:05:28 > 0:05:32which should be crucial in these circumstances.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34I am, actually, I don't feel any kind of nerves.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36No shaky hands, no heart beating.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40I just enjoy it so much that I don't think about being nervous.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Well, good luck to both of you. Are you ready?

0:05:43 > 0:05:44- We're ready.- Yes.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Let's reveal your first weighty challenge.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:59 > 0:06:02In front of you are 26 people.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06From their appearance, you must use all of your powers of judgement

0:06:06 > 0:06:08to estimate how much each of them weigh.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11- So, good luck with that. - CLARE AND LYNN LAUGH

0:06:11 > 0:06:14In a moment you'll be given a target weight and you must then

0:06:14 > 0:06:17select people whose weights will match that target.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21Throughout our lives, though, we've been told not to talk about peoples' weights

0:06:21 > 0:06:25because it's rude, and here we are asking you to estimate exactly what they weigh.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28But Clare, being a midwife, obviously there aren't any babies there,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- cos you'd be really good at it if it's babies, wouldn't you? - LAUGHTER

0:06:31 > 0:06:34- I'm good at that.- Yeah.- I think even with women.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38So we always ask about weight at women's book-ins,

0:06:38 > 0:06:43so with the women up there I might have a better idea with them than with the men, but we shall see.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46And Lynn, what about you? Are you good at assessing people's weights?

0:06:46 > 0:06:47I don't think I'm very good,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50but I think it's not very helpful with the clothes on.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Well, that's true.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54If they could all take them off. CLARE AND LYNN LAUGH

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Indeed! That's why Ashley came without his shirt.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01But you're right, you've got to take into account what they're wearing.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Their boots or hats or whatever. All the gear, as well.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08So, let's set our first target weight, and we'll make it relatively

0:07:08 > 0:07:13simple by just asking you to pick one person who matches this target.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14OK.

0:07:15 > 0:07:1712 stone.

0:07:17 > 0:07:22You're looking for one person whose weight is closest to 12 stone.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25You'll have noticed there's Ken Morley, formerly of Coronation Street,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28and John McCririck's here, as well, who I know very well.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37And Clare has made her selection, she's gone for Deryn. Thank you very much, Deryn.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- We have Deryn and we have Thomas. - APPLAUSE

0:07:40 > 0:07:44So, Clare, let's find out how close you are to 12 stone with Deryn.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46How much do you weigh, please?

0:07:46 > 0:07:4812 stone, 5lbs that's very good.

0:07:48 > 0:07:505lbs over but very, very good.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53APPLAUSE

0:07:53 > 0:07:57Now Lynn, what was it about Thomas that said,

0:07:57 > 0:07:59"I'm a man who weighs 12 stone?"

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Well, it was his quite large shoulders which

0:08:01 > 0:08:05- I now begin to think is just the jacket. - LAUGHTER

0:08:05 > 0:08:06If you're closer than 5lbs

0:08:06 > 0:08:08either over or under,

0:08:08 > 0:08:10then you will win this first round.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Thomas, how much do you weigh?

0:08:15 > 0:08:18- So he's even bigger under the jacket than he looks.- Yes, absolutely.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22It means that Clare, you win Round One, you are closest to 12 stone.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Congratulations and thank you to Deryn and Thomas.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Thank you very much. Well, done.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29So we are now going to test your mathematical skill

0:08:29 > 0:08:32as well as your social perception,

0:08:32 > 0:08:35because we are looking for two weights that add up to a target figure.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39This is your target weight.

0:08:39 > 0:08:4130 stones. You go.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47- You will have noticed at home a couple of famous faces, here. - CLARE LAUGHS

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Clare goes running through them, she wants Jack.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52That was a sudden sprint.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55A bit of athletic ability being tested here, as well!

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Now, this is testing something called social perception,

0:08:58 > 0:09:03and almost automatically we use height, age, posture,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05even clothes to estimate weight.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Danielle is being selected by Lynn,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10and Lynn makes her second selection, which is Ben.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Ben the chef. And Clare has selected Sam.

0:09:16 > 0:09:17APPLAUSE

0:09:20 > 0:09:25So, Clare, you were very, very keen to get your hands on Jack.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27I was. LAUGHTER

0:09:27 > 0:09:28Why was that?

0:09:28 > 0:09:33Well, I think it's easier to judge weight in terms of somebody muscly

0:09:33 > 0:09:36than somebody that has got a few extra pounds.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Right, so how much do you think Jack does weigh?

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Maybe 17 or 18 stone?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45OK. Shall we find out? Jack, how much do you weigh?

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I think you've underestimated how much muscle weighs.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54Should have left him to me, you see.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57I think I need to go and feel those muscles!

0:09:57 > 0:09:58That's it.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Now, that means that you need Sam to be

0:10:02 > 0:10:058 stone 8lbs to be spot-on.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07LAUGHTER

0:10:07 > 0:10:10So, Sam, how much do you weigh?

0:10:10 > 0:10:13- 15 stone and 2lbs.- Wow!

0:10:13 > 0:10:17Which, if we add that on to Jack's weight, I'm afraid means that

0:10:17 > 0:10:22- you go over by 6 stone and 8lbs, with 36 stone 8lbs. - CLARE AND LYNN LAUGH

0:10:22 > 0:10:25The good thing is that you're laughing about it.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28LAUGHTER

0:10:28 > 0:10:29So am I!

0:10:29 > 0:10:33Lynn's rubbing her hands in glee. Hello!

0:10:33 > 0:10:36So, Lynn, you picked Danielle. How much do you think she weighs?

0:10:36 > 0:10:40I thought Danielle probably weighed 8 stone 11.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43OK. Well, let's find out. Danielle how much do you weigh, please?

0:10:43 > 0:10:469 stone 4. That's all right.

0:10:46 > 0:10:47That's lovely.

0:10:47 > 0:10:54So, you need Ben to be 20 stone and 10lbs to be spot-on.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Don't let me down, Ben.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58People shouting, "Come on, Ben"!

0:10:58 > 0:11:00LAUGHTER

0:11:00 > 0:11:02He can't do anything about the answer!

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Let's find out how much Ben weighs. Please reveal your weight.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10- GASPS - 24 stone and 3lbs, which means that...

0:11:11 > 0:11:1533 stone and 7lbs, you're three and a half stone over,

0:11:15 > 0:11:17but you are closest to the target weight of 30,

0:11:17 > 0:11:20so, Lynn, you win this round. Well done.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23APPLAUSE

0:11:23 > 0:11:28And many thanks to Jack and Sam, to Ben and to Danielle. Thank you.

0:11:28 > 0:11:29CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:11:29 > 0:11:33We have one final target weight for you to find.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36You're going to find two people whose weights add up to this.

0:11:39 > 0:11:4125 stone. Go for it.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46We'll see whether Clare suddenly speeds up at the end, here

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- as she gets closer. - Can I have you, please?

0:11:48 > 0:11:50She's going straight for Ashley.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Ashley and Debbie are the selections from Clare.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Lynn has picked out John.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04And she has also picked Ellie.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07Well, done.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11So, Lynn, your target was 25 stone, how much do you think Ellie weighs?

0:12:11 > 0:12:15I think that Ellie weighs about eight stone.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19Well, let's find out how close you are. Ellie how much do you weigh, please?

0:12:19 > 0:12:23seven stone 12, you are 2lbs within what you thought she was,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25- that's excellent. - Yes! Thank you Ellie.

0:12:27 > 0:12:33Now, that means that John needs to be 17 stone and 2lbs.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37John, how much do you weigh, please?

0:12:37 > 0:12:42- 20 stone and 4lbs. - John, you let me down! Oh, no.

0:12:42 > 0:12:443 stone and 2lbs over.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Gosh, I was miles off.

0:12:46 > 0:12:51So, Clare. With Debbie, what were you thinking?

0:12:51 > 0:12:54I basically wanted to pick somebody that I thought would match Ashley

0:12:54 > 0:12:57in terms of going for Ashley being about 16 stone.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59So you need Debbie to be about nine?

0:12:59 > 0:13:02- Yes.- OK. Debbie. How much do you weigh?

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- 8 stone 12. - Well, done Clare.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Very good. So, within 2lbs of what you thought.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Do I get a hug if we're right?

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- A hug with Ashley if you're right? - LAUGHTER

0:13:15 > 0:13:19Is that why you selected Ashley, Clare?

0:13:19 > 0:13:22So, you need Ashley to be 16 stone 2lbs

0:13:22 > 0:13:24to be spot-on the target.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- Ashley...- Come on, Ashley. - Be 19 stone. - How much to do you weigh?

0:13:29 > 0:13:31- 13 stone 7. - GASPS

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Man! Never!

0:13:33 > 0:13:37So, you come out with 22 stone 5lbs.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41- Whoa!- Which is 2 stone 9lbs off target,

0:13:41 > 0:13:45but fractionally closer than Lynn, so you win the third round.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48- You've done the dance! - APPLAUSE

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Thank you to John McCririck, thank you to Ken, thank you to

0:13:52 > 0:13:55all of our crowd who have so graciously revealed their weights.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59And after that game, please don't think you can go up to strangers

0:13:59 > 0:14:02and guess their weight, we will not be responsible for the consequences.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06Clare, you scored four points in that round, Lynn, you scored two.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09There's still plenty more time to increase those points.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Ladies and gentlemen, for now, we will see them again later,

0:14:12 > 0:14:16- Lynn and Clare. - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:14:17 > 0:14:22Now, you don't just find amazing minds in the bar at Mensa on a wet Wednesday,

0:14:22 > 0:14:25you can find them anywhere if you know what you're looking for.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27Here's where we found our next two contestants.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32Hi, I'm Mike from Blackburn in Lancashire

0:14:32 > 0:14:35and I'm studying economics at the University Of Leeds.

0:14:35 > 0:14:36Studying economics has given me

0:14:36 > 0:14:41a really good range of number skills and analytical skills.

0:14:41 > 0:14:42I'm a Blackburn Rovers supporter.

0:14:42 > 0:14:48I find watching football to be like a really good, kind of, cathartic release.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50I am into photography.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53You have to have a good eye for angles and subjects.

0:14:53 > 0:14:58Whenever I go anywhere worth taking photos of, I always have the camera with me.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01I'd definitely love, you know, to be able to take some time

0:15:01 > 0:15:03and actually go and do some proper stuff.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05I'm really competitive, always have been.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Me and my dad and my brother have watched University Challenge

0:15:08 > 0:15:11together with a score sheet. I always tend to come out on top,

0:15:11 > 0:15:14though my dad would dispute that.

0:15:14 > 0:15:18Being younger than some of the other contestants will prove to be

0:15:18 > 0:15:19an advantage for me.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22I'm definitely doing it for the title and not for the money.

0:15:24 > 0:15:29I'm David, I'm from High Wycombe and I'm a telemarketing agent.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32My children think that I've always been a bit of a smart aleck,

0:15:32 > 0:15:35but ever since I found out I was going to be on the show,

0:15:35 > 0:15:39they think I've been in mega smug mode and haven't been talking to me.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42I play Scrabble every week.

0:15:42 > 0:15:47My highest word score was for "magnetos" - that scored 158

0:15:47 > 0:15:50and it went across two triple letter scores.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53I'm very pedantic about words and grammar.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58Here I have a letter and they're talking about the principal sum,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01which they've spelt P, L, E, and of course anybody

0:16:01 > 0:16:05who speaks English will know that that's spelt P, A, L.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07It is important to me to win.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10There's a saying that it's not the winning, it's the taking part,

0:16:10 > 0:16:12but that's what losers say.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Being called Britain's Brightest would be something I'd be proud of.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19In fact, I'd probably incorporate it in my e-mail signature.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Please welcome David and Mike.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:16:35 > 0:16:39- Hello, you two, welcome to the show. - Thank you very much. - Hello, Clare.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42- David, in terms of your intelligence...- Yes.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45..you clearly are a very learned man.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Are there any chinks in your armour?

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Not that I'm going to admit to on national television.

0:16:49 > 0:16:53- He's psyching you out already, Mike. Are you feeling this intimidation? - Poker face.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57Feeling the fire burning off David. Very intimidating.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Now, what will your advantages be, do you think?

0:16:59 > 0:17:03I think over anything else it's got to have to be youth.

0:17:03 > 0:17:08I'm a pretty quick thinker and even though experience comes with age,

0:17:08 > 0:17:12I think speed remains with the young, so... Ready for it.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13Fighting talk.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16It's not about how quick you are, it's about what you know,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20and I think having been around a few years longer than Mike, I might just have the edge there.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23Well, Mike, David, good luck to both of you.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26We are about to undertake a spelling test,

0:17:26 > 0:17:29but you won't need pen and paper, we're going high tech.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Come over here and you will see words appear in the air around you.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35APPLAUSE

0:17:35 > 0:17:39So, for example here are three words associated with the brain.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42I would eliminate the two that I believe are incorrectly spelt,

0:17:42 > 0:17:46"Synapce" and "Coortex", leaving "neuron" as the correctly-spelt word.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Now, there are three rounds in this challenge,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51the words will get progressively harder.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55- David I know you're a stickler for correct spelling.- Correct.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57What was the last word that you publicly corrected?

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Well, my wife and I went to a supermarket recently

0:17:59 > 0:18:03and they had some stationery for sale and the word "stationary"

0:18:03 > 0:18:07was spelt with an A, R, Y at the end. So I got a felt-tip pen out of their stationery

0:18:07 > 0:18:09and changed it to E, R, Y.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12- Which, of course, is perfectly normal.- Absolutely.- Yes. - LAUGHTER

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Mike, you are very quick, you're young, obviously you're agile.

0:18:14 > 0:18:18There is a bit of dexterity to this, do you think that might play to your strengths?

0:18:18 > 0:18:21I'm hoping so. I think I've got pretty good co-ordination,

0:18:21 > 0:18:23so I'm hoping I'll be able to use that in the game.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Mike, I'm going to send you backstage so you can hear and see nothing.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29David, you're first up, so take to the spot and let's go.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34So, here we go, David - you will receive three words

0:18:34 > 0:18:39- and you will strike out the two words that are incorrectly spelt. - OK.- Happy?- Yep. Fine.- Let's play.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58At the end of that first round, Mike, you've scored two out of a possible four.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01David scored three out of four, so he has taken the first round.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26Oh, that's wrong.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28Hesitation, and a mistake on the first one.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35- I'm afraid you timed out, there. - Ah.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- I'm doing badly, here. - The pressure of time forcing you into a mistake there.- Yes.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46Your last one, David.

0:20:47 > 0:20:52"Zabaglione" is correct, well done, but you score only one out of a possible four.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42APPLAUSE

0:21:42 > 0:21:45You're looking nervous, because you think that's not enough.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47- I do think that's not enough. - Will you be relieved and pleased

0:21:47 > 0:21:50when I tell you it IS enough to have won the round? Well done, Mike.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52APPLAUSE

0:22:40 > 0:22:43On the hardest round you have scored four out of four.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32In the third round you were tied with four out of four,

0:23:32 > 0:23:38so now you will answer as many as you can in a row, and the player

0:23:38 > 0:23:42that completes the longest sequence will take the points for the third round. Understood?

0:23:42 > 0:23:46- Yep. Great. - David, you will go first.- OK. - Take to the spot.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51So, David, your time starts now.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56Oh!

0:23:56 > 0:23:59"Garrison" was correctly spelt, I'm afraid, and it's the first one

0:23:59 > 0:24:02you struck out, and that is the end of your challenge. What happened?

0:24:02 > 0:24:05I looked at that wrong, somehow. Never mind.

0:24:26 > 0:24:31- with just one correct answer, you have beaten David, well done. - Thank you.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34APPLAUSE

0:24:34 > 0:24:37And at the end of the spelling challenge it means that David,

0:24:37 > 0:24:40you take two points, Mike, you win the game with four.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43There are still plenty of chances to win more points,

0:24:43 > 0:24:47- but ladies and gentlemen, for now, David and Mike. - APPLAUSE

0:24:47 > 0:24:52Let's meet tonight's last two contestants putting their minds to the test

0:24:52 > 0:24:54in the battle to become Britain's Brightest.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59I'm Zoe, I live in London,

0:24:59 > 0:25:02and I'm managing director of a small software company.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06When I was about five, what I really wanted to be was a ballerina,

0:25:06 > 0:25:10but sadly I wasn't very good at it. At school I was always

0:25:10 > 0:25:13really good at maths, and so by the time I was about 12

0:25:13 > 0:25:16I decided I wanted to be a professional mathematician or physicist

0:25:16 > 0:25:20and I went to university in Cambridge and studied mathematics.

0:25:20 > 0:25:24When I set myself goals, I always follow through and achieve them,

0:25:24 > 0:25:31so I set myself the goal of becoming managing director of my company, which I did in 2012.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34I think the other competitors have to watch out because I come across

0:25:34 > 0:25:40as very nice and very friendly, but underneath, I am absolutely ruthless.

0:25:40 > 0:25:47I'm so competitive that if things aren't going the way I want, then everyone will know about it.

0:25:47 > 0:25:53I've been playing backgammon since 2002, and in 2010 I became Ladies' World Champion.

0:25:53 > 0:25:58And you get used to going, "Yeah, I'm Zoe Cunningham, Ladies' World Backgammon Champion",

0:25:58 > 0:26:03so, similarly it would be great to be able to go, "I'm Zoe Cunningham, Britain's Brightest".

0:26:04 > 0:26:06My name is Roual.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08I was born in Britain, raised in Jamaica

0:26:08 > 0:26:12and I'm a customer service advisor for Croydon Council.

0:26:12 > 0:26:17My wife Hannah is very supportive of me being on the show.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21I think he'll do very well. Very, very quick thinker, he is.

0:26:21 > 0:26:25I was born here, but my parents decided to go back to Jamaica when I was five.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Jamaica to me is very much a second home.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31When I'm there, I'm more Jamaican than I am British.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35I'm a bit of a phone freak.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38Nokia 5146, 6150...

0:26:38 > 0:26:41I eat, sleep, breathe mobile phones.

0:26:41 > 0:26:42Sony Ericsson...

0:26:42 > 0:26:46- I think it's a passion. - An obsession. - THEY LAUGH

0:26:46 > 0:26:48I've just always been into technology and gadgets.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50Samsung Galaxy Ace.

0:26:52 > 0:26:57I didn't go to university, and some of my competitors might think

0:26:57 > 0:27:00they have an advantage, but I'm not dumb.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02I mean, I'm clever, but he's bright. HE CHUCKLES

0:27:02 > 0:27:08This might be Jamaica's fastest, but THIS is Britain's Brightest.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14Please welcome Zoe and Roual.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:24 > 0:27:27Welcome to both of you. Thank you for playing.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31- And Roual, we saw in that film how much you love Jamaica.- Yes.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34What is it about Jamaica that makes you feel so warm towards it?

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Well, I grew up in Jamaica and it is just home to me.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40The people there are just really, really warm, you know,

0:27:40 > 0:27:45so there's nowhere in the world to me just like Jamaica.

0:27:45 > 0:27:50- So, Zoe, or should I say, Zoe, Ladies' World Backgammon Champion 2010?- Indeed.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54Now, backgammon is a game all about strategy and thinking ahead, isn't it?

0:27:54 > 0:27:58Actually, backgammon's a combination of lots of different approaches.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02You do need strategy, but you also need to know about tactics.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04You need to be able to count quickly,

0:28:04 > 0:28:07you need to be able to do some quite complicated maths in your head,

0:28:07 > 0:28:09and, all importantly, you need quite a bit of luck.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12Well, good luck to both of you. It's time to get some

0:28:12 > 0:28:14points on the leaderboard for you, come over this way.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17APPLAUSE

0:28:17 > 0:28:21I'm going to give you both your own personal volcano.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24You'll be faced with a number of questions,

0:28:24 > 0:28:26and you need to say what comes next.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Give me the right answer and you build up lava in your volcano.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31But get it wrong, and it goes to your opponent.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34The first to make their volcano erupt is the winner.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36Now, this is going to be tricky because you need to make

0:28:36 > 0:28:40creative connections, but under the pressure of time, your thinking

0:28:40 > 0:28:44tends to become more cramped and less creative.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47So, best of luck. Would you like to give your volcanoes names?

0:28:47 > 0:28:51I would, I'd like to call my volcano Smokey, because that was

0:28:51 > 0:28:54the name of my first cat and also an appropriate name for a volcano.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57I like it. And what about you, Roual?

0:28:57 > 0:28:59I think I'll go with Blue Mountains,

0:28:59 > 0:29:01because as we all know, I grew up in Jamaica

0:29:01 > 0:29:04and the Blue Mountains are the most famous mountains in Jamaica.

0:29:04 > 0:29:08- So what about Bluey for short? - Bluey? Bluey's fine.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10OK. So we've got Bluey and Smokey the volcanoes.

0:29:10 > 0:29:14Now, the first thing we're going to do is play for control of the game.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17So, the first to buzz in and answer this question correctly

0:29:17 > 0:29:20will take control of the first round.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Your first question is...

0:29:22 > 0:29:24What comes next?

0:29:29 > 0:29:31- Roual, you buzzed in.- 32.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33Is 32 the correct answer?

0:29:33 > 0:29:37It is correct. They are all half the previous number, well done.

0:29:37 > 0:29:40So, Roual, you take control of the first round.

0:29:40 > 0:29:45So, Bluey the volcano comes forward, and this is your first question.

0:29:45 > 0:29:46What's next in this sequence?

0:29:54 > 0:29:56You'll be out of time in a minute.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58Out of time, I'm afraid.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01The answer was 34, they were all part of the Fibonacci Sequence.

0:30:01 > 0:30:02That means that your lava

0:30:02 > 0:30:04passes to Zoe.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06Zoe, Smokey your volcano comes forward,

0:30:06 > 0:30:08and this is your question.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11What comes next in this sequence?

0:30:14 > 0:30:17- 29.- Is 29 correct?

0:30:17 > 0:30:1929 is correct.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21They're all prime numbers

0:34:45 > 0:34:46T

0:34:46 > 0:34:51Is T the correct answer? T is the correct answer, why?

0:37:06 > 0:37:09And let's welcome back Clare, David, Mike and Lynn.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:37:19 > 0:37:21In joint first place with four points

0:37:24 > 0:37:26And with ground to make up,

0:37:50 > 0:37:55MUSIC: "Down With The Trumpets" by Rizzle Kicks

0:37:55 > 0:37:59CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:38:01 > 0:38:04Your task is to do some simple adding and subtracting,

0:38:04 > 0:38:07but of course it won't be that simple. Here's how it works.

0:38:07 > 0:38:12For every performer that bounces on the trampoline to the left, you have to add one.

0:38:12 > 0:38:16For every performer that bounces on the trampoline to the right, you have to subtract one.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19So, for example - a bounce on the plus side

0:38:19 > 0:38:21and one is added.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23A bounce on the minus side, subtract one,

0:38:23 > 0:38:25so the answer would there be zero.

0:38:27 > 0:38:33So watch carefully all the ups and downs - at the end of each round you must give me the overall total.

0:38:33 > 0:38:35Let's see the first one.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38MUSIC: "Jump" by Van Halen

0:39:02 > 0:39:05Let's reveal the correct answer

0:39:05 > 0:39:07and the correct answer is one. I'm sorry, David,

0:39:07 > 0:39:10you must have seen an extra bounce that wasn't there.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14- There were four on the plus side, three on the minus side, that left us with one.- Right.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16Here comes the next sum.

0:39:16 > 0:39:20MUSIC: "Jump" by Kriss Kross

0:39:38 > 0:39:40Let's reveal the final answer.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45Everyone this time in agreement with three,

0:39:45 > 0:39:47let's find out whether you are all correct or all wrong.

0:39:49 > 0:39:51You are all correct as I would expect.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54The answer is three. There were seven bounces on the plus side,

0:39:54 > 0:39:57four on the minus side, leaves us with three.

0:39:57 > 0:39:59So, watch carefully, here is your third sum.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37It was indeed. Well done to all of you.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40There were 15 bounces in total, nine of them on the plus side,

0:40:40 > 0:40:43six of them on the minus side, leaving us with three.

0:41:37 > 0:41:40Let's find out. The correct answer...

0:41:41 > 0:41:43..is five. So, well done, Clare - even though you looked confused,

0:41:43 > 0:41:47- thought you hadn't taken it in, you got it right. - APPLAUSE

0:41:47 > 0:41:49Well, done to David, well done to Lynn, as well.

0:41:49 > 0:41:53There were 21 bounces in total, 13 of them were on the plus side,

0:41:53 > 0:41:56eight were on the minus side, that left us with five.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58You want to trust your brain, Clare! It's there!

0:41:58 > 0:42:01- I'll try, I'll try. - You can do this. - CLARE LAUGHS

0:42:40 > 0:42:43Let's have a look, see what you said.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46Zoe, you went for two, so did Roual.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49Lynn and Mike have entered four.

0:42:49 > 0:42:52David thinks three and Clare thinks five.

0:42:52 > 0:42:54The correct answer is...

0:42:55 > 0:42:58- ..four. - APPLAUSE

0:42:58 > 0:43:02There were 30 bounces in total. 17 of them were on the plus side,

0:43:02 > 0:43:0513 of them were on the minus side, which left us with four.

0:43:05 > 0:43:10- Well done to Mike and to Lynn. - APPLAUSE

0:43:10 > 0:43:14Now, for our final sum, we've decided just to make it a little bit

0:43:14 > 0:43:17more interesting and a little bit more difficult,

0:43:17 > 0:43:22so, if you see anyone in a red shirt, they don't count.

0:43:22 > 0:43:25OK? Good luck to all of you.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28MUSIC: "Over And Over " by Hot Chip

0:44:02 > 0:44:04So, enter your total.

0:44:07 > 0:44:11So, we have all your answers, let's now reveal what you thought the total was.

0:44:13 > 0:44:15Clare and David have gone for nine.

0:44:15 > 0:44:20Mike says six, Lynn says eight. Zoe says seven, Roual says 13.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22The correct answer was...

0:44:23 > 0:44:29- ..9. Well, done to Clare and to David.- Well, done.

0:44:30 > 0:44:34Now, the reason the answer is nine is that there were 24 bounces on the plus side,

0:44:34 > 0:44:38but five of them were by the trampolinist in the red shirt, so they didn't count.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42That brings us down to 19, minus ten on the minus side, gives us nine as a total.

0:44:42 > 0:44:45APPLAUSE

0:44:45 > 0:44:46And we have joint winners.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50- Clare and Lynn out in front, well done. - APPLAUSE

0:44:50 > 0:44:54Followed by David and Mike and Zoe and Roual bringing up the rear.

0:44:54 > 0:44:56So, Clare what was your technique?

0:44:56 > 0:44:59Every time that you had people bouncing together,

0:44:59 > 0:45:02I made an effort to say "same", not a number,

0:45:02 > 0:45:06so every time I had a double bounce I would just say "same, same, same."

0:45:06 > 0:45:09That's exactly what I was doing, but I was completely thrown

0:45:09 > 0:45:12when there was the red shirt in there. Lynn, how did you find it?

0:45:12 > 0:45:15I tried to use my fingers and my toes, which sounds a bit babyish.

0:45:15 > 0:45:19- Did you?- Yes, I tried to. - So, if we watch it back we can actually

0:45:19 > 0:45:22- see your feet wiggling and your fingers?- I hope not. - LAUGHTER

0:45:22 > 0:45:26So, Clare and Lynn, you both receive ten points.

0:45:26 > 0:45:29CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:29 > 0:45:34David and Mike, you're both tied in third place, you both receive three points,

0:45:34 > 0:45:40and Zoe and Roual were tied in fifth place, you receive one point each.

0:45:40 > 0:45:45So this is it. Six players started the game, but now one must leave.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48Let's see what those scores have done to the leaderboard.

0:45:48 > 0:45:51Well, done Clare, you're in first place with 14 points.

0:46:53 > 0:46:57more points to be won, but are you ready for a fantastic fact?

0:46:57 > 0:46:58The brain can't feel pain.

0:46:58 > 0:47:01I'm not willing to test that myself,

0:47:01 > 0:47:04but I know someone who loves experimenting on the British public.

0:47:11 > 0:47:14Here we are outside the 11th Century castle of Tamworth.

0:47:14 > 0:47:17It's the kind of place that would be haunted if ghosts were real,

0:47:17 > 0:47:20so let's do a spooky experiment.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23- I've got Deborah and Faye here. Hello.- Hello.- Hello.

0:47:23 > 0:47:27- So, for this experiment, Deborah, you have to feel Faye's nose, right. - Right.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30But you have to do it in a special way. You need to get like this,

0:47:30 > 0:47:32and then Faye you need to turn around.

0:47:32 > 0:47:37OK, and so what I want you to do is be stroking Faye's nose,

0:47:37 > 0:47:39like this, with a finger and thumb,

0:47:39 > 0:47:42and stroking your nose at the same time with your other hand,

0:47:42 > 0:47:46- and doing it exactly the same way. So, mirror what you're doing. - THEY GIGGLE

0:47:46 > 0:47:49So, keep stroking, and mirror it and don't laugh.

0:47:49 > 0:47:55Keep stroking, and then you have to stop stroking your nose

0:47:55 > 0:47:58but keep stroking Faye's nose. Does it feel weird?

0:47:58 > 0:48:02- It makes it feel like my nose is very long.- Does it?

0:48:02 > 0:48:06So, this is called the Pinocchio illusion because you can

0:48:06 > 0:48:11persuade yourself that you have a really long nose by associating the

0:48:11 > 0:48:16sensation of touch on your nose with the sensation of touching a nose with your fingers.

0:48:16 > 0:48:21The Pinocchio effect is a fun thing to try, but it also shows us

0:48:21 > 0:48:25how easy it is to trick our brains into thinking something else

0:48:25 > 0:48:27is part of our bodies.

0:48:27 > 0:48:30I want to show you just how powerful this effect is.

0:48:30 > 0:48:33It's time to introduce the severed hand.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40OK. So, for this experiment I'm just going to

0:48:40 > 0:48:43start stroking this rubber hand with a brush,

0:48:43 > 0:48:46but I'm going to be stroking your hand, as well.

0:48:46 > 0:48:50'In this experiment, the volunteer's real hand is hidden from her

0:48:50 > 0:48:54'behind a board, with the fake hand in plain sight.'

0:48:54 > 0:48:56The longer I continue to do this,

0:48:56 > 0:49:01the more it should start to feel like this is your hand.

0:49:01 > 0:49:04OK, don't look away.

0:49:04 > 0:49:06SHE GASPS

0:49:06 > 0:49:11How was that? You seem a bit shocked.

0:49:11 > 0:49:13Yeah, a little bit.

0:49:13 > 0:49:15Keep concentrating, don't look away.

0:49:19 > 0:49:22- How was that? - It was terrifying.

0:49:22 > 0:49:25It's really strange, my hand is still tingling

0:49:25 > 0:49:28as if I was really hit by a hammer. It's a bit eerie, to be honest.

0:49:28 > 0:49:30I had to really check afterwards.

0:49:30 > 0:49:32Don't look away.

0:49:35 > 0:49:38Well, it felt like he was hitting my actual hand.

0:49:38 > 0:49:42Sort of, when I moved it back, I thought, ugh, I don't know..

0:49:42 > 0:49:43Don't look away.

0:49:43 > 0:49:45SHE GASPS

0:49:45 > 0:49:46Oh, my God!

0:49:46 > 0:49:50So, what's happening is our brains are receiving information from all our senses

0:49:50 > 0:49:54and trying to put together a picture of the world that makes sense.

0:49:54 > 0:49:58Sometimes our sense of sight can override the other senses.

0:49:58 > 0:50:01So, if you're seeing a hand being stroked

0:50:01 > 0:50:06and you're feeling your hand being stroked, then that must be your hand.

0:50:06 > 0:50:10It overrides your sense of where your limbs really are in space.

0:50:12 > 0:50:16'So, what you see is not always what you get.'

0:50:16 > 0:50:20APPLAUSE

0:50:20 > 0:50:24So interesting. But here we are, and we only have five.

0:50:24 > 0:50:28Here comes our next group game. I'm going to show you a series of pictures.

0:50:28 > 0:50:31When you put them together, they're going to make a name.

0:50:31 > 0:50:35So I could show you a picture of a chair,

0:50:35 > 0:50:37a padlock

0:50:37 > 0:50:38and some houses.

0:50:40 > 0:50:43And using the power of creative association, what have you got?

0:50:43 > 0:50:47Chair, lock, homes. Sherlock Holmes.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50Understood? There are two rounds with four picture puzzles in each.

0:50:50 > 0:50:53Once you've buzzed in and given me a correct answer,

0:50:53 > 0:50:56you can step back and relax for the rest of that round.

0:50:56 > 0:51:01But if you give me a wrong answer, you'll be locked out for the rest of that question.

0:51:01 > 0:51:05So, let's have a look at our first picture clue.

0:51:05 > 0:51:08Buzz in straight away if you think you know the answer.

0:51:08 > 0:51:13If you get it right, you won't have to play for the rest of this round.

0:51:13 > 0:51:17Let's have a look, this is your second picture.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20Anyone going to buzz in?

0:51:21 > 0:51:23The final picture coming up now.

0:51:28 > 0:51:30- Zoe.- Jane Austen.

0:51:30 > 0:51:32Jane Austen you say.

0:51:32 > 0:51:37We saw a chain, Australia, which would be Oz, and a tin.

0:51:37 > 0:51:40Is Jane Austen correct?

0:51:40 > 0:51:42Is it correct. Well done, Zoe, you can step back,

0:51:42 > 0:51:44you have won the first round. Well done.

0:51:46 > 0:51:48Let's show you your second puzzle.

0:51:50 > 0:51:51Picture one.

0:51:52 > 0:51:57Anyone willing to take the chance and buzz in on that first picture?

0:51:57 > 0:51:58Second picture.

0:52:02 > 0:52:03This is your third clue.

0:52:08 > 0:52:10- David. - Ronald Reagan.

0:52:10 > 0:52:14Ronald Reagan, you say. First picture is someone running.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17The second picture is somebody old. That is a ray gun.

0:52:17 > 0:52:18Let's see.

0:52:18 > 0:52:22Ronald Reagan is correct! Well done, David. You step back.

0:52:24 > 0:52:26Let's have a look at your next picture puzzle.

0:52:29 > 0:52:32Anyone want to take the chance on the first picture?

0:52:32 > 0:52:34Second picture coming now.

0:52:35 > 0:52:37Mike.

0:52:37 > 0:52:38Britney Spears.

0:52:38 > 0:52:42Britney Spears. Let's have a look at the third picture.

0:52:42 > 0:52:46Which was two spears, you are right. Britney Spears. Well done, Mike.

0:52:48 > 0:52:50So Lynn and Clare,

0:52:50 > 0:52:53one of you will score a point here, the other will not.

0:52:53 > 0:52:55Let's have a look at your next picture puzzle.

0:52:58 > 0:53:01Either of you want to come in on the first picture?

0:53:02 > 0:53:04Here's the second picture.

0:53:08 > 0:53:11No idea? Either of you? No, shaking your heads, aren't you?

0:53:11 > 0:53:13OK, let's show you the third picture.

0:53:21 > 0:53:22Clare.

0:53:22 > 0:53:23Sol Campbell?

0:53:23 > 0:53:26Sol Campbell. Is Sol Campbell the footballer of those pictures there?

0:53:26 > 0:53:28It is indeed. Well done, Clare.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35If you would all like to step forward once again.

0:53:35 > 0:53:38Just to confirm, Zoe, you were first to answer, then David,

0:53:38 > 0:53:40then Mike, then Clare.

0:53:40 > 0:53:42Lynn, you failed to score any points there in round one.

0:53:42 > 0:53:44Yes.

0:53:44 > 0:53:45Let's play round two.

0:53:49 > 0:53:51Anyone willing to jump in on the very first picture?

0:53:51 > 0:53:54Zoe, very brave. What do you think?

0:53:54 > 0:53:57I'm going to go for Winston Churchill.

0:53:57 > 0:54:01You say Winston Churchill on the basis of the very first picture.

0:54:01 > 0:54:04Let's have a look at the second picture, which is a stone.

0:54:04 > 0:54:08The third picture is a church.

0:54:08 > 0:54:11The fourth picture is somebody who is ill.

0:54:11 > 0:54:13Winston Churchill is correct.

0:54:14 > 0:54:18So, Zoe, for the second time, you are the first person to answer.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21Well done, you have won the second round. Congratulations.

0:54:21 > 0:54:24And let's have a look at the second picture puzzle.

0:54:29 > 0:54:31Shall we have a look at the second one? Here it is.

0:54:35 > 0:54:36Any ideas?

0:54:38 > 0:54:40Let's show you the third picture.

0:54:46 > 0:54:48The final picture is coming to you now.

0:54:53 > 0:54:55- Lynn.- Nicole Kidman.

0:54:55 > 0:54:57Nicole Kidman.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59A nick of the finger, old, kid and a man.

0:54:59 > 0:55:01Nicole Kidman. Well done, Lynn!

0:55:03 > 0:55:05Lynn, you scored no points in the first round,

0:55:05 > 0:55:07finishing second in our second round. Well done.

0:55:07 > 0:55:11So we have three remaining, Mike, David and Clare.

0:55:11 > 0:55:13Let's have a look at your next puzzle.

0:55:19 > 0:55:20Here's your second picture clue.

0:55:23 > 0:55:24Mike.

0:55:24 > 0:55:26I'm going to go for Andy Murray.

0:55:26 > 0:55:28Andy Murray.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30Andy Murray is incorrect.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33You're locked out for the rest of this puzzle.

0:55:33 > 0:55:37So David and Clare, I will show you the third picture.

0:55:40 > 0:55:41- Clare.- Andy Warhol.

0:55:41 > 0:55:42Andy Warhol, you say.

0:55:42 > 0:55:45The "and" the "tea" giving you Andy.

0:55:45 > 0:55:48That picture of the tanks giving you "war"?

0:55:48 > 0:55:51Let's have a look and see what the fourth picture would have been?

0:55:51 > 0:55:54And a hole. Andy Warhol is correct. Well done, Clare.

0:55:54 > 0:55:55You take the points.

0:55:58 > 0:56:01So Mike and David remain. This is your last picture puzzle.

0:56:05 > 0:56:07Either of you want to buzz in?

0:56:08 > 0:56:10I'll show you the second picture. Here it is.

0:56:15 > 0:56:17- Mike. - Jessica Ennis.

0:56:17 > 0:56:21Jessica Ennis, you say. Because "chess", somebody being sick...

0:56:21 > 0:56:23Let's have a look at the third picture.

0:56:23 > 0:56:28It's a car, and the fourth picture is someone playing tennis.

0:56:28 > 0:56:31Jessica Ennis is correct. Well done, Mike.

0:56:31 > 0:56:34So if the rest of you would step forward again.

0:56:36 > 0:56:39Well, Zoe, as you were the clear winner, you will receive 12 points.

0:56:39 > 0:56:43The rest of you were all tied which means you get four points each.

0:56:43 > 0:56:47And let's see how that round has affected the leaderboard.

0:56:47 > 0:56:50It means that Clare, you are still out in front,

0:56:50 > 0:56:51just by one point now from Zoe.

0:56:51 > 0:56:53Lynn is in third, Mike is fourth,

0:56:53 > 0:56:57but David, I'm afraid we are losing you at this stage.

0:56:57 > 0:57:00David, I'm very sorry. It just hasn't quite worked out, has it?

0:57:00 > 0:57:03No, a couple of early mistakes have let me down

0:57:03 > 0:57:04and that's the result.

0:57:04 > 0:57:06Well, thank you very much for playing.

0:57:06 > 0:57:08Ladies and gentlemen, David!

0:57:14 > 0:57:18Now whenever a cartoon character has an idea, a light bulb goes on

0:57:18 > 0:57:22over their head, but that image is in fact based on truth,

0:57:22 > 0:57:25because your brain actually generates enough energy

0:57:25 > 0:57:28to light a 25-watt bulb.

0:57:28 > 0:57:32So we decided to see how many lights were on in Britain.

0:57:34 > 0:57:37'If you ever felt like your eyes were playing tricks on you,

0:57:37 > 0:57:38'well, you could be right.'

0:57:38 > 0:57:40Hey guys, come and have a look.

0:57:40 > 0:57:43This shape and this shape, are they the same? Are they different?

0:57:43 > 0:57:44'Take these two tables.

0:57:44 > 0:57:47'The top one appears to be much longer than the bottom one,

0:57:47 > 0:57:50'but in fact, it's just an optical illusion.

0:57:50 > 0:57:52'The two tables are exactly the same size.'

0:57:56 > 0:57:58Isn't that crazy?

0:57:58 > 0:58:01Sometimes you'll see things one way when the reality

0:58:01 > 0:58:05is completely different and that's because your mind is constantly

0:58:05 > 0:58:09trying to make sense of the world based on familiar past experiences.

0:58:09 > 0:58:11Wow!

0:58:11 > 0:58:14And there's one thing that we see every day that creates

0:58:14 > 0:58:17possibly the most powerful optical illusion of all.

0:58:17 > 0:58:19Shadows.

0:58:21 > 0:58:23'In fact, I'm so confident in the power of shadows,

0:58:23 > 0:58:26'I'm willing to risk a bit of money on it.'

0:58:26 > 0:58:29Cake. Free cake for everyone! Who wants free cake?

0:58:29 > 0:58:32'I will offer free cake to any shopper if they can get

0:58:32 > 0:58:35'the right answer to my next question.

0:58:35 > 0:58:41'Which of these surfaces is darker? The top one or the bottom one?

0:58:41 > 0:58:42'This could be costly.'

0:58:45 > 0:58:47Is this lighter or darker than this? Or are they the same?

0:58:47 > 0:58:48The top is darker.

0:58:48 > 0:58:50Yeah? The top's darker?

0:58:50 > 0:58:53All right, well I've got a little swatch to test it.

0:58:53 > 0:58:55So there you go. So these two are the same colour, right?

0:58:55 > 0:58:59- Yes.- So if I move this down we should see that this is darker than this?

0:58:59 > 0:59:01- Yes.- OK, do you want to do that?

0:59:01 > 0:59:03You take it for me, you might as well do it.

0:59:04 > 0:59:06Oh, no.

0:59:06 > 0:59:08That's weird, isn't it?!

0:59:08 > 0:59:10'Sorry, no cake for you. Next!'

0:59:10 > 0:59:12So do you think this is darker than this?

0:59:12 > 0:59:15OK, so there it is, same colour, move it down...

0:59:15 > 0:59:17It's the same colour!

0:59:17 > 0:59:19This is more darker than this.

0:59:19 > 0:59:20This is darker, right?

0:59:20 > 0:59:21Yes.

0:59:23 > 0:59:26- They look the same!- They're the same, can you believe that?!

0:59:26 > 0:59:27To me it seems magic.

0:59:29 > 0:59:31That is amazing.

0:59:31 > 0:59:33'So how is it that everyone's getting this wrong?

0:59:33 > 0:59:36'Well, your brain has learnt to trust the shadows

0:59:36 > 0:59:39'created by our single light source, the sun.'

0:59:39 > 0:59:43These shadows here tell our brain that this is an object

0:59:43 > 0:59:46that's well lit and this is an object that's in shadow.

0:59:46 > 0:59:51So this must be a darker object and this must be a lighter object.

0:59:51 > 0:59:55But in reality, these two shades of grey are exactly the same.

0:59:57 > 1:00:01'But you know what? There's always one Smart Aleck around.'

1:00:01 > 1:00:03- Same.- You think they're the same?

1:00:03 > 1:00:06- Yeah.- OK, well let's test that out.

1:00:06 > 1:00:09OK, here we go, here's a patch so you can tell the difference

1:00:09 > 1:00:12and they're exactly the same. Ahhh!

1:00:12 > 1:00:15- So where's my cake?- It's the first cake that I've had to buy someone!

1:00:15 > 1:00:18- Unbelievable. Have you seen this before?- I've never seen this one.

1:00:18 > 1:00:21- But you're familiar with the concept?- I am.

1:00:21 > 1:00:23'Ah well, you can't win 'em all.'

1:00:23 > 1:00:26Looks like a BBC chocolate cake, right here.

1:00:29 > 1:00:31Now, you see, he should be on Britain's Brightest,

1:00:31 > 1:00:34but the four who remain are in front of me now.

1:00:34 > 1:00:36They have one more challenge, and as this will decide

1:00:36 > 1:00:38who's going straight through to the final,

1:00:38 > 1:00:41it's one of our very toughest. Because your challenge

1:00:41 > 1:00:46is to estimate when 19 seconds have passed and then hit this button.

1:00:46 > 1:00:51If you press on exactly 19 seconds you will get ten bonus points.

1:00:51 > 1:00:53But you won't be able to see a clock

1:00:53 > 1:00:56and you are also busy trying to make as many four-letter words

1:00:56 > 1:00:59as you can from the grid that will be in front of you.

1:00:59 > 1:01:02Each word you make is worth three points.

1:01:02 > 1:01:05But go over 19 seconds and you lose points.

1:01:05 > 1:01:08We're going to play this game in alphabetical order,

1:01:08 > 1:01:10which means, Clare, you're going to be first.

1:01:10 > 1:01:13Clare, take to the chair and make yourself comfortable.

1:01:16 > 1:01:19So if the three of you would please leave.

1:01:19 > 1:01:23Thank you very much. Clare, are you comfortable?

1:01:23 > 1:01:24- Yes.- Good luck.

1:01:24 > 1:01:25Thank you.

1:01:26 > 1:01:28We're putting 19 seconds on the clock.

1:01:29 > 1:01:32And your time starts now.

1:01:33 > 1:01:38Now, time is measured by part of the brain called the parietal lobe,

1:01:38 > 1:01:40but that part also deals with paying attention,

1:01:40 > 1:01:43which you'll need for working on the word puzzle.

1:01:43 > 1:01:47And since that part of the brain can't do both at once,

1:01:47 > 1:01:48something's got to give.

1:01:48 > 1:01:51Will it be time or the puzzle?

1:01:51 > 1:01:53Now straight away, Clare's struggling to find the words,

1:01:53 > 1:01:56she cannot see the four-letter associated words

1:01:56 > 1:01:59and she's pressed the button with no words at all.

1:02:00 > 1:02:01What happened?

1:02:01 > 1:02:05Every time I tried to look at the words, I lost my count.

1:02:05 > 1:02:09So I figured that the best way to gain the most points

1:02:09 > 1:02:11was to be right on time,

1:02:11 > 1:02:13because you get ten points for being right on time.

1:02:13 > 1:02:16So the key factor here is, are you bang on the time?

1:02:16 > 1:02:20Because if you're not bang on 19 seconds, you've scored nothing.

1:02:20 > 1:02:24So let's find out - what was your time?

1:02:24 > 1:02:27This is crucial, because it's all you've got. Your time...

1:02:29 > 1:02:32..was 23 seconds, you were four seconds over.

1:02:32 > 1:02:35So Clare, minus four is your score.

1:02:35 > 1:02:39That's OK! Let's see how good the others do.

1:02:39 > 1:02:42Clare, for now, thank you. We'll see you again in a moment or two

1:02:42 > 1:02:45and let us welcome Lynn into the chair.

1:02:47 > 1:02:50Now, Lynn. Is this a challenge that will suit you?

1:02:50 > 1:02:51Yes.

1:02:51 > 1:02:56Excellent, that's very confident. Good luck. Let's play.

1:02:56 > 1:02:57Your time starts now.

1:03:00 > 1:03:03This is the first time Lynn has seen the grid so she's looking

1:03:03 > 1:03:06for four-letter words, the letters need to be next to each other.

1:03:06 > 1:03:10She scores "maul". They can be horizontally, vertically,

1:03:10 > 1:03:12or in a square next to each other.

1:03:15 > 1:03:19Two words very quickly scored. Now, this is where the brain struggles

1:03:19 > 1:03:22because it's concentrating on the words.

1:03:22 > 1:03:24And loses track of time.

1:03:28 > 1:03:30Three words and she's hit the button.

1:03:34 > 1:03:38Lynn, you made three words, we can confirm all those words are correct.

1:03:38 > 1:03:40You will get three points for each of them.

1:03:40 > 1:03:43How much time would you estimate you took?

1:03:43 > 1:03:45Probably about 23 seconds in the end.

1:03:45 > 1:03:48You think 23 seconds?

1:03:48 > 1:03:51You have three words at three points each, is nine points.

1:03:51 > 1:03:56You'll lose a point for every second over. Your time, Lynn, was...

1:03:57 > 1:03:59..31 seconds.

1:03:59 > 1:04:00Oh, no!

1:04:00 > 1:04:03So you were 12 seconds over.

1:04:03 > 1:04:07That means that your score is minus three.

1:04:08 > 1:04:12I was looking forward to that and I thought I'd do better, I must admit.

1:04:12 > 1:04:15Lynn, we'll wait and see whether that is good enough.

1:04:15 > 1:04:17For now thank you very much. Lynn!

1:04:18 > 1:04:23And we welcome to the chair Mike. Welcome back, Mike.

1:04:23 > 1:04:26Now, how do you feel about this challenge?

1:04:26 > 1:04:28I have been told that I'm a good multi-tasker.

1:04:28 > 1:04:31So hopefully that'll pay off, but I have my doubts.

1:04:31 > 1:04:33- Good luck, Mike.- Thank you.

1:04:34 > 1:04:36Your time starts now.

1:04:41 > 1:04:45Now, Mike's very quick and straight away he has a word on the board

1:04:45 > 1:04:50"rite" and "maul", very fast work here in terms of the word-making.

1:04:51 > 1:04:53He says he's a good multi-tasker.

1:04:59 > 1:05:02You can see he's lost track of time here and he's got confused

1:05:02 > 1:05:04by the words.

1:05:13 > 1:05:17Two words there, Mike. Now, do you know what happened?

1:05:17 > 1:05:19- You tried to put "rite" in twice. - Yeah.

1:05:19 > 1:05:24So you have two words at three points each, that's six points.

1:05:24 > 1:05:27- How did you think you were for time? - Genuinely not a clue. No idea.

1:05:27 > 1:05:29- No idea, did you lose track? - Yes. Absolutely.

1:05:29 > 1:05:33The time you took was... 35 seconds.

1:05:33 > 1:05:35Ooh!

1:05:35 > 1:05:4116 seconds over, so minus ten are your points for this round.

1:05:41 > 1:05:43It's hard. Definitely.

1:05:43 > 1:05:45We'll have to see where that puts you.

1:05:45 > 1:05:47For now, thank you very much, Mike.

1:05:49 > 1:05:52And our final contestant into the chair is Zoe.

1:05:56 > 1:05:57- You happy?- Yep.

1:05:57 > 1:06:01Zoe, good luck. Your time starts now.

1:06:05 > 1:06:07Now, Zoe's trying to count,

1:06:07 > 1:06:10which may hinder her ability to make words.

1:06:10 > 1:06:13But she gets "help" straight away. Could be a message!

1:06:15 > 1:06:18She's trying to count and you can see the rhythm of her head,

1:06:18 > 1:06:22but that limits her ability to make words.

1:06:24 > 1:06:27She's gone for it. She's hit the button.

1:06:28 > 1:06:32One word, Zoe, and I wondered whether it was a message!

1:06:33 > 1:06:36So it will all come down to your time.

1:06:36 > 1:06:39The time you took was?

1:06:39 > 1:06:4523 seconds, four seconds over, that means your score is minus one.

1:06:45 > 1:06:48Let's find out where that puts you in relation to the other

1:06:48 > 1:06:51three contestants, if they would like to come back in.

1:06:51 > 1:06:54Zoe, take your place in the line-up.

1:06:57 > 1:07:02Tactics played a part, timing played a part, word-making played a part.

1:07:02 > 1:07:08All three combined together meant that minus one

1:07:08 > 1:07:13was a very good score and Zoe, you have won this challenge

1:07:13 > 1:07:17with a score of minus one, despite going over the time

1:07:17 > 1:07:20and making one word, which was "help".

1:07:20 > 1:07:24Lynn, you're in second, you get seven points.

1:07:24 > 1:07:27Clare, you come in third, which gives you four points

1:07:27 > 1:07:32and Mike, I'm afraid you have fourth place and therefore zero points.

1:07:32 > 1:07:35Now we're going to see the final leaderboard.

1:07:36 > 1:07:39In fourth place is Mike with 11 points.

1:07:39 > 1:07:44In third place, Clare with 22.

1:07:44 > 1:07:47In second place, Lynn with 23 points.

1:07:47 > 1:07:50And that means tonight's winner and straight through to the final

1:07:50 > 1:07:54of Britain's Brightest is Zoe with 29 points.

1:07:54 > 1:07:56Well done!

1:08:00 > 1:08:02- Zoe, congratulations. - Thank you so much.

1:08:02 > 1:08:05And that must feel like a real stamina test.

1:08:05 > 1:08:08Absolutely and I feel a bit like I've done it backwards,

1:08:08 > 1:08:11because I was so low after the trampolining round

1:08:11 > 1:08:13because it was such a hard test

1:08:13 > 1:08:16and I felt really kind of a bit flummoxed by it.

1:08:16 > 1:08:18And what have you made of your fellow contestants?

1:08:18 > 1:08:20They've been absolutely amazing.

1:08:20 > 1:08:23I am so pleased and honoured to have met all of them.

1:08:23 > 1:08:27I really am. And we've all exchanged contact details and we're going to stay in touch.

1:08:27 > 1:08:31Oh, that's lovely to hear. Well, well done, Zoe, you are tonight's winner.

1:08:31 > 1:08:32Very sadly, though, Mike,

1:08:32 > 1:08:35I'm afraid you are now out of Britain's Brightest.

1:08:35 > 1:08:38How have you found it and what have you learnt from the experience?

1:08:38 > 1:08:41Ultimately, a couple of things I should have got that I didn't.

1:08:41 > 1:08:44I think the pressure might have got to me a bit.

1:08:44 > 1:08:47Well, we wish you luck in your career, in your life, in everything.

1:08:47 > 1:08:50Mike, thank you very much. Mike, ladies and gentlemen!

1:08:58 > 1:09:01Now, the good news for Clare and Lynn is that it's not all over

1:09:01 > 1:09:04because you've got one last chance to stay in the competition.

1:09:04 > 1:09:07Are you ready to Fight for Survival?

1:09:07 > 1:09:09We are!

1:09:16 > 1:09:18Now, your scores to this point have been wiped.

1:09:18 > 1:09:19It's now very simple.

1:09:19 > 1:09:22The winner will go through to a final play-off,

1:09:22 > 1:09:25the loser leaves the competition.

1:09:25 > 1:09:27On the screen is a grid of numbers.

1:09:27 > 1:09:30You must pick a number to reveal a question or puzzle.

1:09:30 > 1:09:33It could be a word puzzle, a conundrum,

1:09:33 > 1:09:35or even a maths brainteaser.

1:09:35 > 1:09:37At that point your clock will start counting down

1:09:37 > 1:09:41and time will tick away until you give me a correct answer.

1:09:41 > 1:09:44Then your opponent must pick a number and tackle a challenge

1:09:44 > 1:09:46as their own clock starts ticking.

1:09:46 > 1:09:49If either of you simply can't answer the puzzle, you can pass

1:09:49 > 1:09:52and chose another number on the grid.

1:09:52 > 1:09:55If your clock runs out of time, you're out of the competition.

1:09:55 > 1:09:57And since every second counts, there won't be time for me

1:09:57 > 1:10:00to give the answers, but they are all on our website

1:10:00 > 1:10:04at bbc.co.uk/britainsbrightest.

1:12:26 > 1:12:28I'm gutted!

1:12:28 > 1:12:32But to be honest, I am really proud that I got this far.

1:12:32 > 1:12:35You said you came here with a point to prove,

1:12:35 > 1:12:36do you think you've proved it?

1:12:36 > 1:12:38I think I've done a good enough job.

1:12:38 > 1:12:41I think you've been outstanding, Clare,

1:12:41 > 1:12:43you've been a wonderful contestant.

1:12:44 > 1:12:46But Clare is going home.

1:12:46 > 1:12:49Lynn wins our head-to-head and what's your reaction, Lynn?

1:12:49 > 1:12:52I must say I did expect to do fairly well,

1:12:52 > 1:12:54but it was a lot tougher than I thought.

1:12:54 > 1:12:56I'm just sad that I had to beat Clare to go through

1:12:56 > 1:13:00because we have got quite good friends over the day, so...
