0:00:02 > 0:00:06We scoured the land for ordinary people with extraordinary powers.

0:00:06 > 0:00:07When I was three,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'd already learnt the flags of every nation in the world.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13My fastest time for solving a Rubik's cube is 7.91 seconds.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16It was an unusual talent search.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18What is 9 X 12? 108.

0:00:18 > 0:00:209 X 12, 108.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23As we searched for Britain's Brightest.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26I didn't go to university, but I'm not dumb.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29They had to pass brain-busting tests...

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Ooh, you are horrible.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32..show feats of dexterity.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34Oh, God, that's hard.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Finally, 24 made it through.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38- Yeah!- Well done.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40THEY CHEER

0:00:40 > 0:00:42They come from all walks of life.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44I am absolutely ruthless.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48I'm really competitive. I'm definitely doing it for the title.

0:00:48 > 0:00:54But just one can win £50,000 and be crowned Britain's Brightest.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56If I don't make the final,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58it's because there's other people in this competition

0:00:58 > 0:01:01who are just as determined as I am, but not brighter.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome your host, Clare Balding.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27CHEERING

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Hello and welcome to Britain's Brightest,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33a new kind of talent competition.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35While not all of us can sing, dance or juggle,

0:01:35 > 0:01:39all of us can think and we are testing intelligence

0:01:39 > 0:01:41in completely new ways.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44We've got amazing challenges involving logic, memory,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48maths, spelling, emotions and intuition

0:01:48 > 0:01:52and our ultimate winner will leave with a first prize of £50,000.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58From this evening's six players, the top-scoring contestant

0:01:58 > 0:02:01will guarantee themselves a place in our final.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03So let's meet our first two.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07I'm Zahra, I'm from London

0:02:07 > 0:02:10and I'm a medical student training to be a doctor.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13I wanted to become a doctor since I was very young actually.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16I always went round dressed up as a doctor,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19solving people's problems, diagnosing them.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21It was meant to be.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25My inspiration is my mother, she's always been there for me

0:02:25 > 0:02:27and supported me in everything that I've done.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29I'm very, very proud of her.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31What a lot of people don't know about me

0:02:31 > 0:02:33is that I've actually got a black belt in taijutsu.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37That's a type of martial arts. I guess you'd better watch out.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40And it means that I've got a lot of determination and stamina

0:02:40 > 0:02:43so I've got what it takes to go the distance on this show.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Coming on the show is meant to be,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48because my name actually translates to "bright" in Urdu.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Being one of the youngest in the competition at only 20 years of age,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58I think that a lot of people will underestimate me,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01but that would be to their downfall and to my advantage.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I'm Stephen, I'm from Wolverhampton, I'm a senior risk manager

0:03:06 > 0:03:08for a bank and a keen cyclist.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12I'm married to Zana, we have three boys, Thomas, Daniel and Callum.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15My sons are really excited about me being on Britain's Brightest.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17I'm always telling them how clever I am

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and now they've got a chance to see whether I am or not.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Stephen has been the cleverest person I've probably know.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23HE LAUGHS

0:03:23 > 0:03:27The problem is, if he wins he may not get through the door with his head.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28This is probably true.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31It's a bit incongruous to be on Britain's Brightest

0:03:31 > 0:03:34and be a Wolverhampton Wanderers fan because that infers a lack of logic.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40In my spare time, I like to do a lot of cycling

0:03:40 > 0:03:43and I'm afraid it's become my new addiction.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46It culminated last year with me doing a coast-to-coast 190 mile

0:03:46 > 0:03:49bike ride to raise some money for charity.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53I think people will probably see me as an easy-going, laid-back,

0:03:53 > 0:03:59fun-loving guy, but that does hide a vicious competitive streak.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01I will fight tooth and nail to win.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Please welcome Zahra and Stephen.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11APPLAUSE

0:04:17 > 0:04:18Hello.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22Welcome to Zahra and Stephen. You've got a lot of support here tonight.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Maybe it's the Wolverhampton Wanderers crowd, you know.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26- Because you're a big Wolves fan, aren't you?- I am, yes.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28Now how much does sport play a role in your life,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31because you support football but you're a cyclist too?

0:04:31 > 0:04:34I do a lot of cycling. I work out percentages when I'm cycling along,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36how far I've done, how far I've got left,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38have I got enough food and drink to get me through that.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41This presumably is when you're doing a long-distance cycle?

0:04:41 > 0:04:42No, no.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45Do you think physical fitness might play a part tonight?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I think if you're feeling strong and not jaded and tired,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50then it does help your brain to work quicker.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52That's my belief anyway.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Now, Zahra, we heard you say there you are only 20.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Is this going to have any relevance tonight?

0:04:57 > 0:05:00I don't think age really should play a part in this at all.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03If anything, it'll just mean other contestants underestimate me

0:05:03 > 0:05:05and then I'll blow them out of the water.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07- CLARE LAUGHS - Fighting talk!

0:05:07 > 0:05:10- You mother's very important to you. - Yes, she is.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12If you were to win Britain's Brightest,

0:05:12 > 0:05:13what would you do for your mum?

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Oh, I would send her to a spa every day for one.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19I would also take her on lots of holidays

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and just make sure that she gets everything that she deserves

0:05:22 > 0:05:24because she's really inspirational and means the world to me.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Well, good luck to both of you and let's get some points

0:05:27 > 0:05:30on the leaderboard with your first challenge.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34It's a test of judgement, perception and being brutally honest.

0:05:34 > 0:05:35Come with me.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37APPLAUSE

0:05:37 > 0:05:40In front of you, you will see 26 people.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45There are 13 men, 13 women, a couple of recognisable faces.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Good evening to everybody. Hello. Thank you for being with us.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Hello to Jodie Prenger. Hi, Jodie. Hello to Henry Kelly.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54- Hi, Clare.- Thank you for being here. Hello to Jack.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Jack has no shirt. It's not because he's been gambling,

0:05:58 > 0:06:00it's because he competes in World's Strongest Man.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03But for you, Zahra and Stephen, you have to look very closely

0:06:03 > 0:06:06and take in all the clues that you can

0:06:06 > 0:06:09because I want you to guess how old they are.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11In a moment, I'll give you a target number

0:06:11 > 0:06:14and you then have to select people whose possible ages

0:06:14 > 0:06:17when added together, will match that number.

0:06:17 > 0:06:18There are three rounds

0:06:18 > 0:06:22and the closest to the target number in each round will win.

0:06:22 > 0:06:28So your first target number, and you only need one person for this, is...

0:06:28 > 0:06:2922.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33So, Zahra, Stephen, off you go. Try and select a 22-year-old.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36And there are four of them.

0:06:38 > 0:06:43This is testing social perception and it's something that's very alive

0:06:43 > 0:06:47and very necessary in our brain but it is very, very hard

0:06:47 > 0:06:50because there's lots of things that confuse you about age.

0:06:50 > 0:06:55Zahra's made her selection and she's picked Abigail.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58They're quite scary. Yeah, everything.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00I think Rhys, if you come down.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02Go on, Rhys. Are you all right there, darling?

0:07:02 > 0:07:04And Stephen has selected Rhys.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10APPLAUSE

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Zahra. What drove you towards Abigail?

0:07:15 > 0:07:20Probably the fact that 22 is quite close to my own age group

0:07:20 > 0:07:24and she looks like people I go to uni with so that was probably

0:07:24 > 0:07:28one of the main reasons and just her dress sense and things like that.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Well, let's find out how close you were.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33There are four people within that crowd who are exactly 22.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Is Abigail one of them? Abigail, how old are you, please?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39She is one of them. Well done, Zahra.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43Bang on it with 22. An excellent start, well done.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Now, Stephen. What are you like at assessing people's ages?

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Well, I think Zahra has the advantage in this round

0:07:52 > 0:07:55because everyone under the age of 28 looks about 16 to me.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57I've got to that age, I'm afraid.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02But I've got a 20-year-old son and Rhys just looks a little,

0:08:02 > 0:08:05maybe a little older than him so that's why I went for him.

0:08:05 > 0:08:06You need to be bang on here, Stephen.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08Yeah, yeah, I can see that.

0:08:08 > 0:08:09So, Rhys, how old are you, please?

0:08:12 > 0:08:14- Told you.- Rhys is only 18.- Yeah.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Stephen, you rather predicted that this wouldn't be your forte.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Zahra, that means you win the first round of this game,

0:08:21 > 0:08:23congratulations with Abigail being 22.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Thank you both so much.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30So for this next round I'm going to ask you to select two people

0:08:30 > 0:08:36whose ages add up to a target number and your target this time is...

0:08:36 > 0:08:3755.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40So two people whose ages add up to 55.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Off you go and you can have as close a look as you like

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- but don't touch them! - CLARE LAUGHS

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Stephen's made his first selection.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Stephen's gone for Geoff...

0:08:57 > 0:09:01..and he's gone for Sidrah as his second choice.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06Now, Zahra...has chosen Laura first.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08She's hovering right in front of Jodie

0:09:08 > 0:09:12but she's not going to go for Jodie, she's going to go for Matthew.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Matthew comes down in his uniform.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18APPLAUSE

0:09:19 > 0:09:22So, Stephen, you think Geoff is...

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Top-end twen... Probably about 29.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28- 29, but you'd be even... - Maybe 30. Yeah. Yeah.- Maybe 30?

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- And you'd be happy with that?- Yeah.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Geoff, how old are you, please?

0:09:33 > 0:09:35- 33.- 33.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40Which means, if Sidrah is 22, you will be spot on 55.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Sidrah, how old are you, please?

0:09:42 > 0:09:4422. Well done, Stephen!

0:09:44 > 0:09:46APPLAUSE

0:09:46 > 0:09:47Back in the game.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53Zahra, your selections, you've gone for Laura and Matthew.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54Now, talk me through Laura.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57OK. Laura, I thought, looks quite young

0:09:57 > 0:10:02but I had a feeling that she's a bit older, so I think that she's 29.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05Laura, how old are you, please?

0:10:05 > 0:10:0728. Well done!

0:10:07 > 0:10:09APPLAUSE

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Well done, Zahra.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Just one off.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16That is fantastic work.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19Now, you need Matthew to be 27.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23How difficult do you think it is, when somebody is wearing uniform,

0:10:23 > 0:10:26does that make it harder to assess their age?

0:10:26 > 0:10:30Um, it might do, although I wasn't really concentrating on his uniform.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32I tried to look at him as a person

0:10:32 > 0:10:34and I tried to imagine him with a bit more hair.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37So you need Matthew to be 27. If Matthew...

0:10:37 > 0:10:39And I thought he was 26.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- You think he is twen...? - I thought he was 26.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Matthew, how old are you, please?

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Zahra, you were right, he's 26

0:10:46 > 0:10:49but that means that you are one out in your calculations

0:10:49 > 0:10:51and your total is 54.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54It means that Stephen wins the round and it's one round apiece.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58And thank you very much the four of you. Thank you!

0:10:58 > 0:11:00APPLAUSE

0:11:00 > 0:11:03So the final round will be the decider.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- Stephen, I feel you're getting better at this.- Yep.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07It's getting more up towards the higher age range

0:11:07 > 0:11:09that I'm a bit more comfortable with.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- That will play to your strengths, you think?- I would hope so, yeah.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15And, Zahra, you're so good at it that you predict the exact age,

0:11:15 > 0:11:18even when you know you're wrong - which is incredible.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Right, let's give you your final target number.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24You will find two people whose ages add up to...

0:11:24 > 0:11:26- 96.- 96.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Off you go.

0:11:28 > 0:11:29Have a good look at them.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36They've been incredibly accurate so far.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39I mean, Zahra within one and spot on.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43Stephen spot on, with his total of 55.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48Henry Kelly's looking wonderfully wistful.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51I'm not sure if he's hoping to be ignored...

0:11:51 > 0:11:53or hoping to be picked!

0:11:55 > 0:12:00Zahra has selected Amanda and she has also selected Rui.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09- Stephen has selected Stephen... - I'll take a gamble on you, David.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10..and David.

0:12:10 > 0:12:11APPLAUSE

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Well done.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20Zahra, what did you think about Amanda, how old do you think she is?

0:12:20 > 0:12:23I think that she is 44.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25That number just jumped out at me when I saw her, to be honest.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26It's just instinct.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29And she looks lovely tonight, I have to say.

0:12:29 > 0:12:30LAUGHTER

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Well, you said your instinct tells you that she is 44,

0:12:34 > 0:12:36let's find out whether your instinct is correct.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39Amanda, how old are you, please?

0:12:39 > 0:12:42Your instinct is sensational, Zahra, well done.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44APPLAUSE

0:12:48 > 0:12:50So you need Rui to be 52.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Yeah, I did think he is 52.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56I don't know, I've got a few relatives about his age, so...

0:12:56 > 0:12:58that's kind of why I assumed that he was about 52.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Let's find out, then. Rui, how old are you, please?

0:13:02 > 0:13:0554, just two years out. That's not bad, well done.

0:13:05 > 0:13:10- APPLAUSE - Well done, so 98 is your total.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14So, Stephen, if you can get exactly 96, or one either way,

0:13:14 > 0:13:16you will win this round.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18- You've gone for two men.- Yep.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21And what was the sum you did in your head?

0:13:21 > 0:13:25The way Stephen's dressed, he's clearly into his mod music,

0:13:25 > 0:13:28so I thought between 42 and 44.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30But it's tricky because that look's all back

0:13:30 > 0:13:32because of Bradley Wiggins, you know?

0:13:32 > 0:13:36It is all back, but if you get close up to him there are a few wrinkles,

0:13:36 > 0:13:38and that, so I thought he's probably an original mod.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42- So you think he is...? - So I'll go for 40...probably 43.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44You think that Stephen is 43.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Stephen, how old are you, please?

0:13:46 > 0:13:48- 40.- Stephen's 40.- Same age as me.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51- Exactly the same age as you. - Yep, yep.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55So, you need David to be 56.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59He strikes me as, you know, a man who likes his rock music.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Sort of, probably, from the, sort of, early '70's, kind of, music.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04I don't know, so I, kind of, aged him on that basis.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06I'm going to say he's 56

0:14:06 > 0:14:08cos then it looks like I'm really clever if he is.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09It will make you feel very clever

0:14:09 > 0:14:11and you'll win the round if he is 56.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13David, how old are you, please?

0:14:13 > 0:14:14The answer is 60.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16APPLAUSE

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- A little older. - So your total is 100.- Two out.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23Zahra is closer, that means Zahra wins the round

0:14:23 > 0:14:24and she collects another two points

0:14:24 > 0:14:27but thank you very much to our four who were selected, there.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Thank you so much to Jodie and to Henry,

0:14:29 > 0:14:31and to all of our crowd, and thank you for playing.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33APPLAUSE

0:14:37 > 0:14:40After that challenge, Zahra, you have scored four points,

0:14:40 > 0:14:41Stephen, you have two points

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and there are still plenty more opportunities to increase those

0:14:44 > 0:14:48points totals, but for now, ladies and gentlemen, Zahra and Stephen!

0:14:48 > 0:14:50APPLAUSE

0:14:52 > 0:14:55Now, scientists are in two minds whether there's intelligent life

0:14:55 > 0:14:59out there but there's plenty of it down here.

0:14:59 > 0:15:03The ordinary brain has an incredible 70,000 thoughts every single day

0:15:03 > 0:15:06but we weren't looking for ordinary brains,

0:15:06 > 0:15:08we were looking for extraordinary ones.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30and to show that we should never be underestimated.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33The most important part of our day!

0:15:33 > 0:15:37Kim is THE most competitive person ever.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39I am a terrible loser.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Possibly, even, a worse winner.

0:15:41 > 0:15:46If I beat someone on a board game I tend to jump up and yell, "Loser!"

0:15:46 > 0:15:47"Loser! Loser!"

0:15:47 > 0:15:50and then do my victory dance.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52I have an irrational fear,

0:15:52 > 0:15:56which could be used against me by the other competitors

0:15:56 > 0:16:00but the only way they could use it is if they wave broccoli about.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02I'm terrified of the B word.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06If it was announced that I'd won Britain's Brightest

0:16:06 > 0:16:10I would be jumping about with Clare Balding doing the victory dance.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Before that, I was a cost accountant...

0:16:23 > 0:16:26..which wasn't very romantic and exciting.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30I have a wife called Ren...

0:16:30 > 0:16:34He's crazy, who knows what he's going to do next?

0:19:02 > 0:19:05leaving the one word that is correctly spelt.

0:19:05 > 0:19:06So, for example,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09here are three words that I should know fairly well.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14I knock out the two that I think are wrong, leaving the one word,

0:19:19 > 0:19:21I hope so. I hope so.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23What about you, Kim, how's your spelling?

0:20:40 > 0:20:41You have tied Round One.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44It means that your points roll forward to Round Two,

0:20:44 > 0:20:47- which will now become worth double points.- Right.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49- Ladies and gentlemen, Bernie. - Thank you.

0:20:49 > 0:20:50APPLAUSE

0:20:57 > 0:20:59- Oh!- Yes, I know.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02That means the points roll forward to Round Two.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29And Kim comes through to take the spot.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Now, Kim, the pressure is on.

0:28:00 > 0:28:0224-hour puzzle competitions?

0:28:02 > 0:28:03Thoroughly enjoy it.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07Once been, you're totally bitten and addicted to it.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09And does your brain get weaker as the hours go on,

0:28:09 > 0:28:12or do you somehow find a strength at two in the morning?

0:28:12 > 0:28:14You find a strength that keeps you going.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16I think that's helped by plenty of sugar,

0:28:16 > 0:28:19plenty of high-sugar drinks, as well, and that keeps the adrenaline flowing

0:28:19 > 0:28:21and keeps you wide awake through it all.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24I'm not sure that's a health tip we should take on board!

0:28:24 > 0:28:27- But it works for you, Liane. - It's all right for the 24 hours.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30Well, Sam, Liane, this should be an intriguing battle of brains.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32It's time to get you both on the leaderboard.

0:28:32 > 0:28:36I'm going to lock you up in these two rooms,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38which you seem remarkably relaxed about.

0:28:38 > 0:28:39It's not actually that type of a show.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42You must use the power of your brains to escape.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45The rooms are full of puzzles.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49Every time you correctly solve one, the room will go momentarily green.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52There are three stages, and the first player to solve each stage

0:28:52 > 0:28:56will win two points, up to a maximum of six points in total.

0:28:56 > 0:29:01Good luck to both of you. Liane and Sam, please take your places in the chairs facing the briefcase.

0:29:01 > 0:29:02OK, thank you.

0:29:08 > 0:29:11In front of you is a briefcase with a folder on top.

0:29:11 > 0:29:15Solve the puzzle and you'll have the code to open the case,

0:29:15 > 0:29:18which will lead you to the next stage of the game.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21So, if you're ready, your time starts now.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26"It's an open and shut case.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28"Second Tuesday in January.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31"First Sunday in May.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33"Second Sunday in June."

0:29:34 > 0:29:36Sam's gone for the calendar,

0:29:36 > 0:29:39to look up the number relating to each of those days.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Now, the second Tuesday in January is the 8th,

0:29:43 > 0:29:47so, if he's right, the first digit of the lock will be 8.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54Liane has gone to the yellow board.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57Oh, no, the red alarm is telling her that's the wrong thing to do.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06Meanwhile, Sam has discovered that the first Sunday in May is the 5th,

0:30:06 > 0:30:09and the second Sunday in June is the 9th,

0:30:09 > 0:30:11giving him the code 859.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Oh, yes, it works. Sam has got the case open.

0:30:23 > 0:30:27But, next door, Liane's still not even seen the calendar.

0:30:29 > 0:30:33With the first puzzle solved, the light box behind Sam has come on

0:30:33 > 0:30:36and inside the case is the next puzzle.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39It's eight transparencies which, arranged correctly,

0:30:39 > 0:30:41will create a plan of the room.

0:30:42 > 0:30:47Liane's finally found the calendar and can now crack the code.

0:30:51 > 0:30:55Sam's taking his time on the floor plan jigsaw,

0:30:55 > 0:30:58and it's allowed Liane to catch up. She's opened the case.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05After a slow start,

0:31:05 > 0:31:08will Liane's experience in puzzling give her an edge?

0:31:16 > 0:31:17Sam's nearly there.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21- He's done it. - APPLAUSE

0:31:21 > 0:31:23That's the end of stage one, and he takes two points.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27He's created the floor plan of the room.

0:31:27 > 0:31:28The corner is highlighted,

0:31:28 > 0:31:31- showing him where the next challenge is located.- Oh, God.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36Starting to panic a bit, and Liane is catching up.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38She's finished her jigsaw,

0:31:38 > 0:31:41and on the floor plan, she's spotted the filing cabinet flashing.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44That's the clue that Sam's missed.

0:31:44 > 0:31:47It's the key to cracking the code on the yellow board.

0:31:48 > 0:31:52Where Liane is very thorough, Sam goes for speed.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54..got 14 being P.

0:31:54 > 0:31:55Whether that means...

0:31:55 > 0:31:58He's going to try and come up with his own theory.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00..16, that's the 16th one...

0:32:00 > 0:32:0416th letter in the alphabet, but then that wouldn't work...

0:32:05 > 0:32:06But Liane has worked out

0:32:06 > 0:32:10that the number 14 has been filed under the letter P.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12If she looks through the rest of the files,

0:32:12 > 0:32:14she'll discover the other letters

0:32:14 > 0:32:16that correspond to the numbers on the board,

0:32:16 > 0:32:17and she can crack the code.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22What could I do next? I could...do something like this.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25Sam hasn't looked in the filing cabinet once...

0:32:25 > 0:32:28And that fits...

0:32:28 > 0:32:30- ..but... - ..and 3 is there. And 1 is there.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33- ..he's being creative... - What could that be?

0:32:33 > 0:32:35That. Sorted. But where would that be?

0:32:35 > 0:32:37..and he's being logical, and he's got it

0:32:37 > 0:32:40without looking at a single letter in that filing cabinet.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42He has seen that it says, "Open the laptop."

0:32:42 > 0:32:43OK...

0:32:43 > 0:32:46He needs to solve the sum.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48Paperclips plus pencils, squared,

0:32:48 > 0:32:52minus test tubes, divided by books equals the safe key.

0:32:52 > 0:32:53Shouldn't be too hard.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Liane's worked out the code.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59She's catching up with Sam,

0:32:59 > 0:33:02who's trying to find all the elements of the equation.

0:33:04 > 0:33:08So, four paperclips plus two pencils equals six,

0:33:08 > 0:33:11squared makes it 36,

0:33:11 > 0:33:17minus the eight test tubes that Liane has just found equals 28,

0:33:17 > 0:33:20divided by the books.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24Now, at first glance, you'd assume there are eight books,

0:33:24 > 0:33:25but take a closer look.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29Sam hasn't been careful enough,

0:33:29 > 0:33:33and can't figure out why his answer doesn't match any of the safe keys.

0:33:34 > 0:33:38Whoever solves this equation will earn the next two points.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44Liane's not taking any chances,

0:33:44 > 0:33:47and is actually counting each of the books.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49She finds there are seven, not eight,

0:33:49 > 0:33:51she's gone for safe key number 4,

0:33:51 > 0:33:55and she's right. 28 divided by 7 equals 4.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58- APPLAUSE - She opens the safe and wins two points.

0:34:01 > 0:34:05Inside, she's found nine metallic blocks, and the instruction...

0:34:10 > 0:34:13Eight will fit snugly in the case, leaving one left over.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16Oh, you've...

0:34:16 > 0:34:18Oh! Tricked me.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20Sam's realised his mistake, and grabs key number 4.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24They're neck-and-neck again.

0:34:24 > 0:34:29But who will be quickest to arrange the shapes and get the next clue?

0:34:29 > 0:34:31This is where Liane is really strong.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34She has the puzzle-solving experience.

0:34:34 > 0:34:35Sam tends to rush...

0:34:38 > 0:34:41- ..and he gets frustrated. - Nightmare.

0:34:44 > 0:34:46Liane is nearly there.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49- She's done it. - APPLAUSE

0:34:49 > 0:34:51Behind her comes the message...

0:34:51 > 0:34:55She has to rearrange the letters of the word on the remaining block

0:34:55 > 0:34:57to find the shape.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59The word is PATHOGEN.

0:34:59 > 0:35:03Sam is still struggling to get those blocks to fit in the case.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05..so we're left with this.

0:35:05 > 0:35:06So that could go in there.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12Liane has quickly solved the anagram.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15It's HEPTAGON, and the next puzzle appears...

0:35:20 > 0:35:23Liane has gone straight for book number 8 off the shelf.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26She's pulled something out, but she's missed the instructions.

0:35:33 > 0:35:34The last...

0:35:35 > 0:35:39Sam has FINALLY managed to get those blocks into the case,

0:35:39 > 0:35:41but he hasn't spotted the next clue.

0:35:41 > 0:35:42Er...

0:35:44 > 0:35:48Next door, Liane is re-tracing her steps.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51She has that book again, and this time sees the instructions,

0:35:51 > 0:35:53"Snap this to reveal the code for the door."

0:35:56 > 0:36:00She snaps the stick, the room has gone dark...

0:36:02 > 0:36:06..and UV light picks out those three numbers - 8, 4, 1 - up on the wall.

0:36:07 > 0:36:11She's so close. This is the last puzzle.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13Look up, Liane!

0:36:13 > 0:36:15Just look up, it's on the wall.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17This is giving Sam a chance to catch up.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20Come on, Liane, look up. Step back, look up!

0:36:20 > 0:36:23"Rearrange the word on the remaining block to find the shape."

0:36:27 > 0:36:28Sam's getting there.

0:36:30 > 0:36:31Turn around, Liane. Turn around!

0:36:34 > 0:36:36Bingo, finally!

0:36:36 > 0:36:39She sees "841," keys it into the panel...

0:36:39 > 0:36:40EXPLOSION

0:36:40 > 0:36:44..and the challenge is over! Liane takes the final two points.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:46 > 0:36:48Well done, Liane. Well done!

0:36:49 > 0:36:52- You blew the door off! - Oh, that was...er....

0:36:52 > 0:36:54You blew the door off, and you didn't even react!

0:36:54 > 0:36:56- Fantastically well done. - Oh, thank you very much.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58Sam, you started so well...

0:36:58 > 0:37:01But then it all went to pieces. The briefcase, it all went wrong.

0:37:01 > 0:37:03- You're frustrated, aren't you? - I am, yeah, yeah.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Liane, it seems what really suited you

0:37:05 > 0:37:07was the fact that you were so methodical.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10- You go through things, and that earned you points.- It did.

0:37:10 > 0:37:12I was slow picking up the calendar in the first place.

0:37:12 > 0:37:14I just didn't spot that.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17I was expecting something nearer, for some reason.

0:37:17 > 0:37:19Then I got going through the rest of them fine,

0:37:19 > 0:37:22and then I just can't believe how long it took me

0:37:22 > 0:37:24to step back and look up at the end.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26A really intriguing test of both of your brains,

0:37:26 > 0:37:28and at the end of that challenge,

0:37:28 > 0:37:31Liane, you have scored four points, Sam, you have scored two.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34Well done to both of you. Ladies and gentlemen, Liane and Sam.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37- Thank you very much, and good luck for the next rounds also.- Yes.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39APPLAUSE

0:37:39 > 0:37:42Now, before our next game, here's a fantastic fact.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45Shakespeare was responsible for inventing more English words

0:37:45 > 0:37:47than any other individual.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49If he needed a word, he'd make one up...

0:37:49 > 0:37:51- like CHAV. - LAUGHTER

0:37:51 > 0:37:55So, it's fair to say, British brains work in very mysterious ways,

0:37:55 > 0:37:57as we've been finding out.

0:38:00 > 0:38:04I want you to really concentrate on this scene for the next few seconds.

0:38:04 > 0:38:06Try and take everything in.

0:38:06 > 0:38:08So have a look at all this fruit here.

0:38:08 > 0:38:10Bananas on the left, tomatoes on the right.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13Have you got all that? Great.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15Now, look away...

0:38:15 > 0:38:19and when you look back, I want you to tell me what's changed.

0:38:19 > 0:38:20OK, look back.

0:38:22 > 0:38:23Did you get it?

0:38:23 > 0:38:25Yeah, it was easy, wasn't it?

0:38:25 > 0:38:28We've switched these tomatoes with these bananas here,

0:38:28 > 0:38:32BUT did you also notice that my shirt changed into a jumper?

0:38:34 > 0:38:37Probably not, and what that shows you

0:38:37 > 0:38:40is that even when we THINK that we're taking everything in,

0:38:40 > 0:38:43our brains have limited attention,

0:38:43 > 0:38:47and they focus like a spotlight on the most important things,

0:38:47 > 0:38:50whilst our subconscious brains fill in the rest.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52- All right, Lee?- Hi, how you doing?

0:38:52 > 0:38:55So, what I'm thinking is, how far can we push this?

0:38:55 > 0:38:58Instead of switching a shirt for a jumper,

0:38:58 > 0:39:00can we switch Lee for me?

0:39:02 > 0:39:05Two boxes of raspberries, £2!

0:39:05 > 0:39:08We set up an experiment to see if we can make people's brains

0:39:08 > 0:39:11assume that Lee and I are the exact same person.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14- Have you got any kiwis? - Kiwis?- Yeah.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17I'll just have a look. I'll just get these in a bag, OK?

0:39:17 > 0:39:22Now, I'm hoping she's concentrating fully on the fruit she's buying.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24- I don't think we've got any kiwis today.- No kiwis?- No.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26OK, I'll just have them then.

0:39:26 > 0:39:28- Two for a pound. There you go. - Lovely, thank you.

0:39:28 > 0:39:30Can I ask, did you notice anything strange?

0:39:30 > 0:39:32Yeah, you changed. He's down there.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35All right, yeah, you did notice.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37'Oh, dear, she didn't fall for it.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39'I hope this experiment's going to work.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41'Next!'

0:39:41 > 0:39:42I'll just get you a bag...

0:39:50 > 0:39:52There you go.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54Can I ask you a question?

0:39:54 > 0:39:56- Did you notice anything unusual going on there?- No.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58The first person you spoke to wasn't me.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01It was this guy, hiding under the desk.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03Did you notice us change places?

0:40:03 > 0:40:05- No.- That's weird, isn't it?

0:40:05 > 0:40:07'Well, that worked, but maybe she was just being polite.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09'So, let's keep going.'

0:40:09 > 0:40:12- Right, ten satsumas... I'll just get you a bag.- Cheers.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18Was it just me you spoke to?

0:40:18 > 0:40:20- You didn't speak to anyone else, did you?- No, no-one.

0:40:20 > 0:40:22Hold on a sec. Do you recognise this guy?

0:40:22 > 0:40:25- No.- Hello.- So, he was the first guy who served you,

0:40:25 > 0:40:26but we swapped places.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29- Ha, you didn't even notice, did you? - No, I didn't, actually.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32Well, I asked for my oranges, which...

0:40:32 > 0:40:36Yeah, the person served me, and then I looked away to look at bananas

0:40:36 > 0:40:39and somebody else served me and I thought it was the same person.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41It's spooky, really.

0:40:41 > 0:40:42'And one more for luck...'

0:40:42 > 0:40:44Yeah, I'll just get you a bag...

0:40:50 > 0:40:52Can I ask, is it just me you've spoken to at the stall?

0:40:52 > 0:40:54Do you recognise this guy?

0:40:55 > 0:40:57- Hi, what can I get you?- No.

0:40:57 > 0:40:59- Oh. So he was the first guy that served you.- Oh, really?!

0:40:59 > 0:41:01...as in, he was the first guy you saw,

0:41:01 > 0:41:04we swapped places, and you didn't notice.

0:41:04 > 0:41:08It wasn't until the end that we realised that anything had changed.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12In fact, I still can't remember the first guy serving us.

0:41:12 > 0:41:14- No, I can't either.- No.

0:41:14 > 0:41:15'So, what's happening here?'

0:41:15 > 0:41:18We don't notice big changes in our surroundings

0:41:18 > 0:41:20because we don't expect them to happen.

0:41:20 > 0:41:23But, this isn't a failing of our brains,

0:41:23 > 0:41:24it's actually amazing,

0:41:24 > 0:41:29'because it shows how our brains are able to cut out what's incidental

0:41:29 > 0:41:32'and concentrate on what's important.

0:41:32 > 0:41:34'So, how far can I push this?'

0:41:34 > 0:41:36OK, I'll just get you a bag. Hang on...

0:41:38 > 0:41:40You've been tangoed!

0:41:40 > 0:41:42Oh, he's turned into a banana now!

0:41:42 > 0:41:44Oh, did you spot that?

0:41:46 > 0:41:47Too much.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50APPLAUSE

0:41:50 > 0:41:52Which shows you can get away with just about anything.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55Please welcome back all of our contestants,

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Zahra, Bernie, Kim, Stephen, Liane and Sam.

0:41:58 > 0:42:00CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:00 > 0:42:03Our head-to-head games are now over,

0:42:03 > 0:42:06so let's see how our leaderboard is looking...

0:42:06 > 0:42:10and in first place, with six points after the head-to-heads,

0:42:10 > 0:42:12- it's Bernie. - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:12 > 0:42:16We have Liane and Zahra tied in second with four points each,

0:42:16 > 0:42:18then Sam and Stephen both have two,

0:42:18 > 0:42:21and at the moment, Kim is yet to score,

0:42:21 > 0:42:25BUT there are 12 points on offer for winning the next game.

0:42:25 > 0:42:26Bernie, well done.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29- Out in front, very good start from you.- Thank you.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31- The red is clearly for victory.- Yes.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35Our first group game is a test all about numbers.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39We're about to teach you a couple of nifty little maths shortcuts

0:42:39 > 0:42:41that should help you to calculate difficult sums.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44Once you've learned the shortcut, you're going to put it into practice

0:42:44 > 0:42:47with a series of quick-fire maths questions.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50So here's a number-crunching celebrity with a head for figures.

0:42:52 > 0:42:56Hello, I'm Countdown's resident mathematician, Rachel Riley,

0:42:56 > 0:43:00and my maths shortcuts can help anyone seem like a mathematical genius,

0:43:00 > 0:43:02let alone the contestants of Britain's Brightest.

0:43:02 > 0:43:06First up, here's a quick method for multiplying a number by 5.

0:43:06 > 0:43:10So we'll take the example 1,246...

0:43:10 > 0:43:12and all you do is times this number by ten,

0:43:12 > 0:43:14so we'll stick a nought on the end,

0:43:14 > 0:43:16and then divide it by 2...

0:43:16 > 0:43:19and you get 6,230...

0:43:19 > 0:43:22and that's all there is to it.

0:43:22 > 0:43:23That's all there is to it,

0:43:23 > 0:43:25although you don't have a blackboard and chalk

0:43:25 > 0:43:28and you don't have pen or paper, you have to do it all in your head.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31But you've learned the trick, so now it's time to put it into practice.

0:43:31 > 0:43:35The last person to answer each problem will be eliminated

0:43:35 > 0:43:36until only one of you remains.

0:43:36 > 0:43:38Let's play.

0:43:39 > 0:43:411,045 x 5 equals what?

0:43:43 > 0:43:46Quick as they can, they enter the numbers into their keypad.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48That's wrong from Zahra. Try again.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50Bernie's got it right, Stephen's got it wrong,

0:43:50 > 0:43:53Liane's got it wrong, Sam is right.

0:43:54 > 0:43:55Correct from Stephen.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58Still waiting for answers from Zahra, Kim and Liane.

0:43:58 > 0:44:00Liane's got it right.

0:44:00 > 0:44:03It's between Kim and Zahra. Well done, Kim.

0:44:03 > 0:44:05Zahra, I'm afraid you failed to answer.

0:44:05 > 0:44:09You'll have to step back, you're eliminated from this round.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11The answer that you were looking for was...

0:44:15 > 0:44:18So, let's give you your second maths question.

0:44:18 > 0:44:20It is this...

0:44:20 > 0:44:232,483 x 5 equals what?

0:44:26 > 0:44:28Bernie first again.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31Liane, I'm afraid you don't get the answer in time,

0:44:31 > 0:44:34and you step back, you're eliminated from the rest of this round.

0:44:34 > 0:44:36The answer Liane was looking for was this...

0:44:40 > 0:44:42Here's your next maths question.

0:44:42 > 0:44:475,823 x 5 equals what?

0:44:50 > 0:44:53Bernie's there. Incorrect from Stephen. Try again.

0:44:56 > 0:44:58Incorrect from Sam. Try again.

0:44:59 > 0:45:00Stephen's got it.

0:45:00 > 0:45:02Kim's got it. Well done.

0:45:02 > 0:45:04Sam, I'm afraid you haven't. Step back.

0:45:04 > 0:45:07The answer you were looking for was this...

0:45:10 > 0:45:14So, we have Bernie, Kim and Stephen left.

0:45:14 > 0:45:18Kim, I have a feeling you didn't think you'd very good at this.

0:45:18 > 0:45:19- You didn't, did you?- No.

0:45:19 > 0:45:22Can we have a little interim victory dance?

0:45:22 > 0:45:24Yay! Go, girl!

0:45:24 > 0:45:28So three of them remain. One will score maximum points.

0:45:28 > 0:45:30Let's find out your next maths question.

0:45:30 > 0:45:32It is this...

0:45:32 > 0:45:374,922 x 5 equals what?

0:45:43 > 0:45:45Making sure they don't make a mistake.

0:45:45 > 0:45:47Bernie took his time, but got it correct.

0:45:47 > 0:45:51A mistake from Stephen. Kim is waiting...to be certain.

0:45:53 > 0:45:56That's wrong from Kim. Try again. Stephen is mid-number.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00Stephen's made a mistake again.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03He's going as fast as he can, finally gets it right.

0:46:03 > 0:46:06Stephen, well done - and Kim, on that occasion, it flummoxed you.

0:46:06 > 0:46:09The answer you were looking for was this...

0:46:11 > 0:46:13..but Kim, well done. You step back now.

0:46:13 > 0:46:17So it is between Bernie and Stephen...

0:46:17 > 0:46:19LAUGHTER

0:46:19 > 0:46:22Here is your final question in this round...

0:46:23 > 0:46:279,753 x 5 equals what?

0:46:29 > 0:46:32You can see Bernie's lips moving as he tries to work it out,

0:46:32 > 0:46:35and then he goes straight for it and enters it onto the keypad,

0:46:35 > 0:46:37and he is correct! Bernie, that was sensational.

0:46:37 > 0:46:39Well done. Well done to Bernie.

0:46:39 > 0:46:41CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:46:41 > 0:46:45Stephen, I think you've been beaten by a very, very strong maths mind.

0:46:45 > 0:46:46Terrific effort from you.

0:46:46 > 0:46:50Bernie takes the first round, Stephen finishes second, and Kim finishes third.

0:46:50 > 0:46:53If you would all like to step forward once again...

0:46:53 > 0:46:56And the answer to that final question was...

0:46:58 > 0:47:01Of course it was(!) You got that at home, didn't you(?)

0:47:01 > 0:47:04Time now to learn your next shortcut. Pay attention, class.

0:47:05 > 0:47:08Thanks, Clare. Now, here's my final maths tip,

0:47:08 > 0:47:13and it's a simple method for squaring any two-digit number ending in a 1.

0:47:13 > 0:47:15So let's take 51 as our example.

0:47:15 > 0:47:20Now, first, round this down to the nearest tens, and we have 50.

0:47:20 > 0:47:24Now, we need to square 50, which works out as five squared, 25,

0:47:24 > 0:47:26with a couple of noughts on the end...

0:47:26 > 0:47:282,500.

0:47:28 > 0:47:33Now, we need 2 x 50, which is 100, and a little 1 on the end.

0:47:33 > 0:47:37Add the three of these together for 2,601...

0:47:38 > 0:47:40..and it's as simple as that(!)

0:47:40 > 0:47:42LAUGHTER

0:47:42 > 0:47:45I don't know what's simple about that,

0:47:45 > 0:47:47but I reckon Bernie'll be able to do it

0:47:47 > 0:47:49and I think a fair few others of you will as well.

0:47:49 > 0:47:51This could be very interesting.

0:47:53 > 0:47:5421 squared.

0:47:54 > 0:47:5721 x 21 equals what? Sam is straight there.

0:47:57 > 0:47:59Liane is there.

0:47:59 > 0:48:01Zahra, that's wrong.

0:48:01 > 0:48:02Bernie's got it right.

0:48:04 > 0:48:06Try again, Zahra.

0:48:06 > 0:48:10So round it down to the nearest ten, square that...

0:48:10 > 0:48:12Well done, Stephen. Well done, Zahra.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14I'm afraid, Kim, that time it wouldn't come.

0:48:14 > 0:48:15Step back, please.

0:48:17 > 0:48:20And the answer you were looking for was...

0:48:20 > 0:48:22441.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24Here is your next maths question.

0:48:26 > 0:48:2891 x 91 equals what?

0:48:32 > 0:48:33Sam's got it.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36Sam's being very, very quick in this round.

0:48:36 > 0:48:38A mistake from Bernie and from Zahra.

0:48:40 > 0:48:42A mistake from Liane. Try again.

0:48:42 > 0:48:43Zahra's got it.

0:48:43 > 0:48:45Stephen's got it.

0:48:46 > 0:48:47Bernie's got it.

0:48:47 > 0:48:51Finally, Bernie gets it. My word, that was really difficult!

0:48:51 > 0:48:53APPLAUSE

0:48:54 > 0:48:56And, Liane, I could see how hard you were trying.

0:48:56 > 0:49:00I couldn't remember what the shortcut was and it had just...gone.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02Liane, step back from the second round.

0:49:02 > 0:49:08The answer to 91 x 91 is 8,281,

0:49:08 > 0:49:10which is very easy if you have it written down in front of you.

0:49:10 > 0:49:12Here is your next maths question.

0:49:14 > 0:49:1641 x 41 equals what?

0:49:17 > 0:49:19Sam has been incredibly quick in this round

0:49:19 > 0:49:21and he wins again, ahead of Zahra.

0:49:21 > 0:49:24Bernie and Stephen working it out...

0:49:24 > 0:49:27- Bernie, this time, gets it right. - APPLAUSE

0:49:27 > 0:49:29And that means, Stephen, I'm afraid you are out of time

0:49:29 > 0:49:31and you will step back.

0:49:31 > 0:49:35And this was the answer to 41 squared.

0:49:35 > 0:49:38It's 1,681.

0:49:38 > 0:49:42So, we have three remaining. Zahra, Bernie and Sam.

0:49:43 > 0:49:4561 x 61 equals what?

0:49:48 > 0:49:50Well done, Sam.

0:49:50 > 0:49:53Well done, Zahra, just ahead of Bernie.

0:49:53 > 0:49:54Bernie, you got it right,

0:49:54 > 0:49:57but I'm afraid you were just slower than Zahra.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59This was the answer that you correctly put in.

0:49:59 > 0:50:023,721.

0:50:02 > 0:50:03Bernie, thank you so much.

0:50:03 > 0:50:05If we could ask you to step back...

0:50:05 > 0:50:09So, it comes down to the two youngest competitors tonight,

0:50:09 > 0:50:10Zahra and Sam.

0:50:10 > 0:50:15This is your final maths question to see who will win this second round.

0:50:15 > 0:50:17This is it...

0:50:17 > 0:50:1981 x 81 equals what?

0:50:21 > 0:50:24Sam is there. Sam got it right.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27Zahra attempted and got it wrong. Bad luck, Zahra.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29Well done, Sam.

0:50:29 > 0:50:33The answer, which you know, was...

0:50:37 > 0:50:39So, at the end of that game...

0:50:39 > 0:50:42Bernie, you won it, earning yourself 12 points.

0:50:42 > 0:50:44Sam, in second, gets seven points.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47Stephen, in third, gets four points.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50Zahra in fourth place with two points,

0:50:50 > 0:50:51and Kim is fifth with one point.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54Liane sadly scoring nothing from the maths round.

0:50:54 > 0:50:58Let's see how that has affected the leaderboard.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01Bernie is out in front with 18 points.

0:51:01 > 0:51:03He has a healthy lead over Sam, who has 9.

0:51:03 > 0:51:07Stephen is currently in third place, tied with Zahra, then Liane,

0:51:07 > 0:51:10but I'm afraid at the bottom of that leader board,

0:51:10 > 0:51:12and therefore leaving us, is Kim.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15APPLAUSE

0:51:15 > 0:51:17- Oh, Kim, I'm so sorry. - It's all right.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19I wanted to see that victory dance.

0:51:21 > 0:51:23- Yay! - LAUGHTER

0:51:23 > 0:51:25Kim, you have been fantastic,

0:51:25 > 0:51:27and I think you need to go back to your boss

0:51:27 > 0:51:29and tell him he has the most brilliant secretary.

0:51:29 > 0:51:32- I won't let him forget it! - No. Have you enjoyed it?

0:51:32 > 0:51:34Yeah, it's been a great laugh. It's been good fun.

0:51:34 > 0:51:36Kim, you've been a wonderful contestant.

0:51:36 > 0:51:37Ladies and gentlemen, Kim.

0:51:37 > 0:51:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:51:47 > 0:51:49So Kim is the first player to leave us

0:51:49 > 0:51:52and, at this stage, Bernie, you're out in front.

0:51:52 > 0:51:55Do you have any weak spots?

0:51:55 > 0:51:58I'm not so good on sort of spatial puzzles

0:51:58 > 0:52:01and moving things around,

0:52:01 > 0:52:03so I'm not sure if that's coming or not.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06Well, we shall find out. Here comes your second group challenge.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09Please welcome Keelan Leyser with Charlotte Marie

0:52:09 > 0:52:11and David Straightjacket.

0:52:11 > 0:52:13APPLAUSE

0:52:15 > 0:52:18Now, Keelan and Charlotte Marie are going to do some quick changing

0:52:18 > 0:52:22and David, who I'm suspecting his real name is not David Straightjacket, but it could be...

0:52:22 > 0:52:24he's going to do some escaping.

0:52:24 > 0:52:26All you have to do is pay close attention.

0:52:26 > 0:52:30I'll be asking observational questions after the performances,

0:52:30 > 0:52:32but to make things trickier,

0:52:32 > 0:52:34our acts will be performing at the same time.

0:52:34 > 0:52:37So you'll have a lot to take in. Are you ready?

0:56:29 > 0:56:34How many buckles was David wearing during his entire performance?

0:56:35 > 0:56:37- Zahra?- Eight?

0:56:37 > 0:56:38The total, actually, was 11.

0:56:38 > 0:56:42Six on his straightjacket, two on each shoe, one on the belt.

0:56:42 > 0:56:43So 11.

0:56:43 > 0:56:45What item was Keelan holding

0:56:45 > 0:56:48when Charlotte revealed her Union Jack dress?

0:56:48 > 0:56:50- Bernie?- Umbrella.

0:56:50 > 0:56:51Let's have a look...

0:56:51 > 0:56:54- An umbrella is correct. - APPLAUSE

0:56:59 > 0:57:01Well, that game tested your observational skills,

0:57:01 > 0:57:04it also tested your memory, and there was a clear winner.

0:57:04 > 0:57:07Liane, you were outstanding. You are the winner of that round.

0:57:07 > 0:57:10Sam, you finished second,

0:57:10 > 0:57:13but the other three were all tied.

0:57:13 > 0:57:14All of that means...

0:57:14 > 0:57:17for you, Liane, 12 points are added,

0:57:17 > 0:57:20Sam, for finishing second, you will get seven points.

0:57:20 > 0:57:25Zahra, Bernie and Stephen will all receive two points.

0:57:25 > 0:57:26So, this is it.

0:57:26 > 0:57:30Five players started the game. Now, one must leave us.

0:57:30 > 0:57:33Let's have a look at the latest leaderboard.

0:57:33 > 0:57:36And you will see that out in front is Bernie with 20,

0:57:36 > 0:57:39Liane has 16, along with Sam,

0:57:39 > 0:57:43but tied in the bottom position are Stephen and Zahra,

0:57:43 > 0:57:46which means, for the very first time in this competition,

0:57:46 > 0:57:48we will have a tie-break.

0:57:48 > 0:57:51Bernie, Liane and Sam, if I could ask you all to step back...

0:57:52 > 0:57:56This is a tie-break. You will be asked one question.

0:57:56 > 0:58:01It will either test your logic, your verbal skills or your numeracy,

0:58:01 > 0:58:04and the subject for your question will be decided

0:58:04 > 0:58:06by a spin of this machine.

0:58:06 > 0:58:10Whoever buzzes in first and answers correctly will stay.

0:58:10 > 0:58:14If you buzz in first and answer incorrectly, you will leave.

0:58:14 > 0:58:17Let's start the tie-break.

0:58:17 > 0:58:19Let us find out...

0:58:19 > 0:58:22what the subject matter will be, and who will that suit best?

0:58:25 > 0:58:26Numeracy.

0:58:27 > 0:58:33Here is your question. What is one third of 456?

0:58:33 > 0:58:34Zahra?

0:58:35 > 0:58:38I have to push you for an answer. Quickly.

0:58:38 > 0:58:42It's one hundred and...eighteen.

0:58:42 > 0:58:44It's not 118, it's 152.

0:58:44 > 0:58:47It was a very, very brave effort.

0:58:47 > 0:58:49Zahra, you had to take the risk, didn't you?

0:58:49 > 0:58:52Yeah, I did. I think I misheard the question, 356, so...

0:58:52 > 0:58:55Listen, you've been a terrific contestant.

0:58:55 > 0:58:58Good luck with your career and your continued training to be a doctor,

0:58:58 > 0:58:59and you do have a brilliant mind.

0:58:59 > 0:59:01Ladies and gentlemen, Zahra.

0:59:01 > 0:59:03APPLAUSE

0:59:08 > 0:59:10And now let's pile on the pressure.

0:59:10 > 0:59:13The next challenge will decide who is guaranteed a place

0:59:13 > 0:59:16in the final of Britain's Brightest 2013.

0:59:16 > 0:59:17It's the toughest test yet,

0:59:17 > 0:59:20and it all happens in The Chair.

0:59:20 > 0:59:25Your challenge is to estimate when 22 seconds has passed,

0:59:25 > 0:59:26and then hit the button.

0:59:26 > 0:59:31If you press on exactly 22 seconds, you'll win ten bonus points.

0:59:31 > 0:59:34But you won't be able to see a clock, and you'll be busy

0:59:34 > 0:59:37trying to make as many four-letter words as you can from our grid.

0:59:37 > 0:59:40It sounds deceptively simple. Believe me, it is not.

0:59:40 > 0:59:44Each word is worth three points, but if you go over 22 seconds,

0:59:44 > 0:59:48for every second you go over, you will be deducted a point.

0:59:48 > 0:59:50You're playing in alphabetical order.

0:59:50 > 0:59:53Bernie, if you would like to take your place in The Chair,

0:59:53 > 0:59:56and if the other three of you would like to disappear,

0:59:56 > 0:59:59we're going to put you on headphones and make sure you can't hear or see.

0:59:59 > 1:00:02Good luck, Bernie. You've been sensational so far.

1:00:04 > 1:00:06And your time starts now.

1:00:07 > 1:00:09'The clock disappears.

1:00:09 > 1:00:13'Bernie has no idea of how many seconds are passing.

1:00:13 > 1:00:16'He has to make four-letter words with letters that are connected...

1:00:16 > 1:00:20'horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or in a square...

1:00:20 > 1:00:22'CARE and CALP come up very quickly.'

1:00:25 > 1:00:28'CALP is questionable. CARE and POLE are good.'

1:00:29 > 1:00:31'No word there.'

1:00:41 > 1:00:44How did you think you were for time?

1:00:44 > 1:00:49I think I've probably gone over by five or six seconds.

1:00:49 > 1:00:52CARE, POLE and PORE are all allowed.

1:00:52 > 1:00:54- CALP is not.- Right.

1:00:54 > 1:00:56So we'll give you three words at three points each,

1:00:56 > 1:00:58that's nine points.

1:00:58 > 1:01:01But the crucial thing is the time...

1:01:01 > 1:01:0229 seconds.

1:01:02 > 1:01:06So, seven over. That leaves you with two points.

1:01:06 > 1:01:08Doesn't sound very much, does it?

1:01:08 > 1:01:11Well, wait and see, when we see the other three.

1:01:11 > 1:01:13- Bernie, for now, thank you very much.- Thank you.

1:01:13 > 1:01:16Bernie will disappear backstage, he will not see or hear Liane,

1:01:16 > 1:01:19and Liane will be faced with the same grid.

1:01:19 > 1:01:22Her challenge is to make as many four-letter words as she can...

1:01:24 > 1:01:26..but also to hit 22 seconds.

1:01:26 > 1:01:28- OK.- Good luck, Liane.

1:01:28 > 1:01:29Thank you.

1:01:29 > 1:01:31Your time starts now.

1:01:36 > 1:01:38'Now, Liane is good with puzzles.

1:01:38 > 1:01:40'She loves a puzzle,

1:01:40 > 1:01:43'but will her competitive instinct take over,

1:01:43 > 1:01:47'will she get absorbed by making four-letter words?'

1:01:49 > 1:01:52'HERO is her first word, and will she lose track of time?

1:01:52 > 1:01:55'She's going to see these words very quickly...'

1:01:57 > 1:02:00'This is her strength, but she's lost track of time.'

1:02:06 > 1:02:09'Yep, she's now becoming absorbed in the word game,

1:02:09 > 1:02:12'and has forgotten the time completely.

1:02:12 > 1:02:16'But the timing device in her brain has just stopped operating,

1:02:16 > 1:02:19'and also she's now freezing on the words. She's got PINT...

1:02:19 > 1:02:22'You need to stop the clock, Liane!

1:02:22 > 1:02:23'Stop the clock...'

1:02:28 > 1:02:31How do you think you were for time?

1:02:31 > 1:02:34Possibly a little bit over. I was hoping to get more words in there.

1:02:34 > 1:02:36We can confirm that HAEL is not allowed.

1:02:36 > 1:02:39- That leaves you with five words... - Yeah, that's fine.

1:02:39 > 1:02:41- ..three points each, that's 15 points.- Yep.

1:02:41 > 1:02:43BUT you were aiming for 22 seconds.

1:02:43 > 1:02:46Liane, you took...

1:02:46 > 1:02:49- 54 seconds.- OK. AUDIENCE GASPS

1:02:49 > 1:02:53That's 32 seconds over the allowed time.

1:02:53 > 1:02:56- That leaves you with a score of minus 17.- That's fine.

1:02:56 > 1:02:59Liane, well done. Let's swap our queen of puzzles

1:02:59 > 1:03:01for our physicist with a first. Here comes Sam.

1:03:03 > 1:03:06Sam, our third contender into The Chair.

1:03:06 > 1:03:09- Now, Sam, you are good at many things.- Thank you.

1:03:09 > 1:03:11Are you good at multitasking?

1:03:11 > 1:03:13Um...no.

1:03:13 > 1:03:16No, I think, is the sad answer to that.

1:03:16 > 1:03:19Well, this could be interesting then, Sam.

1:03:19 > 1:03:21- Good luck.- Thank you.

1:03:23 > 1:03:26Sam, your 22 seconds starts now.

1:03:27 > 1:03:30'Now Sam admits he's not good at multi-tasking,

1:03:30 > 1:03:33'but he's really come into his own

1:03:33 > 1:03:35'in the latter stages of this competition.

1:03:35 > 1:03:36'The first word is up.

1:03:36 > 1:03:39'He's struggling a bit for the second one.'

1:03:49 > 1:03:51'Oh, he's hit the clock.'

1:03:55 > 1:03:57FARE is fine.

1:03:57 > 1:03:59The word LEMA...

1:03:59 > 1:04:01- is a figment of your imagination. - Yeah.

1:04:01 > 1:04:03It doesn't exist.

1:04:03 > 1:04:06So, one correct word, Sam, gives you three points.

1:04:07 > 1:04:10The crucial thing, though, is the time.

1:04:10 > 1:04:13- How did you feel for time? - I think I hit it too soon.

1:04:13 > 1:04:16Sam, your time was...

1:04:18 > 1:04:21- CHEERING AND APPLAUSE - ..22 seconds! You were bang on it!

1:04:21 > 1:04:23That is amazing!

1:04:23 > 1:04:25- You were bang on it. You get ten bonus points.- Woo!

1:04:25 > 1:04:27I cannot tell you how hard that is to do.

1:04:27 > 1:04:30- Oh, thank you.- Sam, that was sensational. Well done.

1:04:30 > 1:04:31Brilliant.

1:04:31 > 1:04:34CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:04:34 > 1:04:38And let's welcome back our final contestant, that is Stephen.

1:04:38 > 1:04:42- Stephen, you've survived in the competition by the skin of your teeth.- Yes.

1:04:42 > 1:04:45- Now, can you go any further? - I'm going to give it my best.

1:04:45 > 1:04:46Good luck, Stephen.

1:04:50 > 1:04:51Your time starts now.

1:05:00 > 1:05:03'FAAR may be questionable, but FARE is good.

1:05:03 > 1:05:05'FEAR is good.'

1:05:06 > 1:05:07'Very fast.'

1:05:13 > 1:05:16'Three allowable words so far. PONT is good.'

1:05:20 > 1:05:23'Stephen needs to start thinking about time now.'

1:05:23 > 1:05:24BUZZER

1:05:29 > 1:05:32Stephen, the reason that it went red and made the noise

1:05:32 > 1:05:35- was you tried to enter the same word twice.- Yeah, I realise.

1:05:35 > 1:05:37So, what did you think your time might have been?

1:05:37 > 1:05:41Um...I thought I was around about the 20, 21 seconds mark,

1:05:41 > 1:05:43probably just slightly under.

1:05:43 > 1:05:46Four words are confirmed, Stephen. FAAR is not accepted.

1:05:46 > 1:05:49- That's 12 points for words.- Yep.

1:05:49 > 1:05:50Let's see how long you took...

1:05:52 > 1:05:54- 40 seconds. So, you were well over. - Wow.

1:05:54 > 1:05:57- And you did lose complete track, didn't you?- Yeah.

1:05:57 > 1:06:00Your final score, therefore, is minus 6.

1:06:00 > 1:06:02Oh, dear.

1:06:02 > 1:06:04We shall ask the others to re-join us,

1:06:04 > 1:06:06and if you would like to take your place in the line-up...

1:06:06 > 1:06:09- Thank you, Stephen. - APPLAUSE

1:06:09 > 1:06:12Now, two of you failed, I'm afraid, dismally,

1:06:12 > 1:06:15in terms of keeping the clock in your head,

1:06:15 > 1:06:17and that was Stephen and Liane.

1:06:17 > 1:06:19You both went well over the allowed time.

1:06:19 > 1:06:22Bernie, your time really wasn't bad at all.

1:06:22 > 1:06:24However, outstanding,

1:06:24 > 1:06:29and the first player on Britain's Brightest to hit the time exactly

1:06:29 > 1:06:33and earn himself ten extra bonus points was Sam.

1:06:33 > 1:06:36A fantastic performance, Sam, and you win the game.

1:06:36 > 1:06:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:06:39 > 1:06:41You will receive 12 points.

1:06:41 > 1:06:43You may celebrate as much as you like.

1:06:43 > 1:06:45Bernie, you're second, you get seven points,

1:06:45 > 1:06:49Stephen, you have come in third, which gives you four points,

1:06:49 > 1:06:51and Liane, on this occasion, fourth,

1:06:51 > 1:06:53and, I'm afraid, no points at this stage.

1:06:53 > 1:06:58So, tonight, I've asked our players to be horribly accurate about people's ages,

1:06:58 > 1:07:02I've locked them up and scrambled their heads with spelling, memory and maths.

1:07:02 > 1:07:06Let's see who coped best, with our final leaderboard.

1:07:08 > 1:07:10In bottom place, and leaving us at this stage,

1:07:42 > 1:07:46- I made one word and one word that wasn't a word...- Wow. Well done.

1:07:56 > 1:07:57Have you enjoyed the experience?

1:07:57 > 1:08:01Yeah, I think I could have done a bit better in some of the tests,

1:08:01 > 1:08:02but it's been a great day,

1:08:02 > 1:08:06and these guys are all extremely intelligent people, well capable,

1:08:06 > 1:08:09and any one of them, I think, could go on to win the entire competition.

1:08:09 > 1:08:12You've been a lovely contestant. Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen.

1:08:12 > 1:08:14Thank you very much indeed.

1:08:25 > 1:08:29you've got one last chance to stay in the competition.

1:08:29 > 1:08:33It's all or nothing. This is your fight for survival.

1:08:33 > 1:08:34APPLAUSE

1:08:39 > 1:08:43Liane and Bernie, your scores up to this point have been wiped.

1:08:43 > 1:08:45The winner will go through to a last chance play-off,

1:08:45 > 1:08:48the loser leaves the competition.

1:08:48 > 1:08:50On the screen is a grid of numbers.

1:08:50 > 1:08:53You must pick a number to reveal a question or a puzzle.

1:08:53 > 1:08:57It could play to your strengths or reveal your weaknesses.

1:08:57 > 1:09:00At that point, your clock will start counting down

1:09:00 > 1:09:03and time will tick away until you give me a correct answer,

1:09:03 > 1:09:06then your opponent must pick a number and tackle a challenge

1:09:06 > 1:09:08as their own clock starts ticking.

1:09:08 > 1:09:11If either of you simply can't solve a puzzle, you can pass,

1:09:11 > 1:09:13choose another number from the grid.
