0:14:05 > 0:14:07as we were going back and rehearsing it,

0:14:48 > 0:14:53This is one of those routines which is genuinely iconic.

0:15:18 > 0:15:23I think Cyd stands apart from all the dancers of her generation
0:15:23 > 0:15:26because the technique is just really effortless,
0:15:26 > 0:15:28and she's got beautiful, long legs
0:15:28 > 0:15:30that when she lifts them, makes you take notice.
0:15:30 > 0:15:34Beautiful lines when she hits her marks, and she's a perfectionist.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37And now that it's my chance, I'd better not screw it up!
0:15:38 > 0:15:40It's a real delight to be able to...
0:15:40 > 0:15:43step into the shoes of Gene Kelly?
0:15:43 > 0:15:45It's kind of scary at the same time.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48Everyone knows who Gene Kelly is. He's a legend.
0:15:48 > 0:15:51Um... So, yeah, it's with trepidation
0:15:51 > 0:15:54and with great joy that I step into his shoes.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57Yeah, it's the day before.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01Oh, it's a huge thing to be able to get on stage and rehearse.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04You get to see just how magnificent this theatre is.
0:16:04 > 0:16:08I mean, Gene Kelly is a legend in my world of dance.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11I get the honour of performing with our modern-day Gene Kelly,
0:16:11 > 0:16:13which is Adam Garcia.
0:16:13 > 0:16:15So, in a way, I do get to dance with Gene Kelly.
0:16:16 > 0:16:18A little nervous
0:16:18 > 0:16:21just to be able to get on and do that routine, do it justice
0:16:21 > 0:16:24and do Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly justice, too.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27APPLAUSE
0:19:35 > 0:19:39CHEERS AND APPLAUSE
0:20:01 > 0:20:02That...
0:20:04 > 0:20:07I've never been able to watch a dance like that so close.
0:20:07 > 0:20:08It's incredible!
0:20:08 > 0:20:11It was an amazing piece that Gene choreographed. And...
0:20:11 > 0:20:14what they actually did was phenomenal,
0:20:14 > 0:20:16and he never span backwards.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19He never went that way. He always spun...
0:20:19 > 0:20:21on his left, turning left.
0:20:21 > 0:20:25What would you say, out of ten, technically, how demanding is that?
0:20:25 > 0:20:28Well, Cyd Charisse is known for her ballet background.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30- Yeah.- And what she does well
0:20:30 > 0:20:33is make that ballet foundation look effortless.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35It takes a lot of work to look effortless.
0:20:35 > 0:20:37It looked absolutely fantastic.
0:20:37 > 0:20:40Ladies and gentlemen, Kimberly Wyatt and Adam Garcia.
0:20:40 > 0:20:41Absolutely wonderful.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44CHEERS AND APPLAUSE
0:20:49 > 0:20:52Well, it's time now for a fantastic magician,
0:20:52 > 0:20:56who was the highest placed human in last year's Britain's Got Talent,
0:20:56 > 0:20:59amazing the judges with his incredible illusions.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02And if he can make a cynical old prune like Simon Cowell
0:21:02 > 0:21:04believe in magic, then he must be something special.
0:21:04 > 0:21:08Check this out. You see our magician?
0:21:08 > 0:21:10He takes off his hat. He reaches inside.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12He pulls out just one card.
0:21:12 > 0:21:16Ladies and gentlemen, not just any card, it's the seven of hearts.
0:21:16 > 0:21:19- CHEERS - Oh, my God!
0:21:23 > 0:21:25There are a lot of people who do tricks, and there are a few
0:21:25 > 0:21:28people who actually can do magic, and I think we just saw that.
0:21:33 > 0:21:37Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage Mr Jamie Raven.
0:21:37 > 0:21:40CHEERS AND APPLAUSE
0:21:49 > 0:21:52So, Jamie, welcome to the show. Fabulous to have you here.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54Now, apart from Britain's Got Talent...
0:21:54 > 0:21:57- I mean, that's what I imagine most people recognise you from.- Yeah.
0:21:57 > 0:21:58I mean, you have been doing...
0:21:58 > 0:22:01- You've been doing magic for years and years.- I have.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03I've been performing professionally for the last 12 years,
0:22:03 > 0:22:05and I started learning when I was about ten.
0:22:05 > 0:22:08So, yeah, 22 years of my life have been spent lying to people,
0:22:08 > 0:22:10- in a nice way.- Amazing.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13Actually, your career kind of took off here, didn't it, on this stage?
0:22:13 > 0:22:15It did. It was literally on this spot,
0:22:15 > 0:22:16and it's changed my life completely.
0:22:16 > 0:22:19This was the Britain's Got Talent auditions, right here.
0:22:19 > 0:22:20It was indeed, yeah.
0:22:20 > 0:22:21ALEXANDER SIGHS Nice to be back.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23Now, tell us about your inspirations,
0:22:23 > 0:22:24when you were growing up.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28For me, it's the one and only Mr Tommy Cooper.
0:22:28 > 0:22:32APPLAUSE
0:22:32 > 0:22:33Fantastic.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38Because Tommy was... I mean, he was a comedian as well as a magician.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41I mean, in your opinion, comedian or magician?
0:22:41 > 0:22:42I think he was both.
0:22:42 > 0:22:45I think he was a magician who used comedy to enhance
0:22:45 > 0:22:47his performance. I think, you know, any variety performer
0:22:47 > 0:22:49- could learn something through watching...- Yeah.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52He was, in my opinion, one of the finest we've ever had.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54Now, you had the most fantastic tour.
0:22:54 > 0:22:55I did. I was very, very lucky.
0:22:55 > 0:22:58Amazing. With a guide that I think we all know.
0:22:58 > 0:22:59Let's take a look at this.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08For me, some of Tommy's most memorable performances
0:23:08 > 0:23:10were at the London Palladium.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14And today, I've arranged to meet one of Tommy's very dear friends
0:23:14 > 0:23:17to give me more insight about the man himself.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21Sir Bruce, thank you so much for meeting me.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23Glad you could make it. Come here.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25APPLAUSE
0:23:26 > 0:23:29Well, here we are, Jamie. Just a couple of photographs here.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31The whole company on a Royal Variety show.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33Who's that handsome young man right there?
0:23:33 > 0:23:35- That's me in the middle. - You? Where's Tommy?
0:23:35 > 0:23:38- Tommy, they pushed him right at the end.- Oh, no. Look at that.
0:23:38 > 0:23:39- It's cos he was so tall. - Yeah, exactly.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42- They put the taller kids at the back.- Exactly.
0:23:42 > 0:23:44He'd ad lib with his magic tricks.
0:23:44 > 0:23:46He'd think, "Well, that's got a big laugh.
0:23:46 > 0:23:50"I'll follow that one with that", and he'd change it.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52Look. See that? This one does the same, look.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55LAUGHTER
0:23:57 > 0:23:59There we are, Jamie.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02Dressing room A and B at the Palladium.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04It's a Royal Variety show.
0:24:04 > 0:24:08There are eight comedians dressed in these two rooms, OK?
0:24:08 > 0:24:11Tommy was with them all. Here we are. Let's go in.
0:24:13 > 0:24:17Tommy Cooper was a comedian's comedian.
0:24:17 > 0:24:20One thing he did, he started this joke, and then he said,
0:24:20 > 0:24:21"Oh, excuse me for a minute,"
0:24:21 > 0:24:25and he went out the door, and he left us for 20 minutes.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28Then he'd come back and they'd say, "Finish the joke."
0:24:28 > 0:24:31He'd say, "What joke? Was I doing a joke?
0:24:31 > 0:24:32"I don't remember that".
0:24:32 > 0:24:34Here's a quick joke.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39What was it? Oh, yes.
0:24:39 > 0:24:42Now, there's one place, Jamie, I'd love to show you.
0:24:42 > 0:24:46It's the most unlikely place to meet him,
0:24:46 > 0:24:49but I saw him there very often, outside in the street.
0:24:49 > 0:24:50- Let's go.- Let's go.
0:24:54 > 0:24:56And it's somewhere round here.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Hamleys. There we are. Hamleys.
0:25:01 > 0:25:03In we go. This was his favourite store.
0:25:03 > 0:25:06When he'd look round this store, he'd be in here for hours.
0:25:06 > 0:25:07And would he look for certain things
0:25:07 > 0:25:10and then apply jokes to them, or do you think he had
0:25:10 > 0:25:12a joke in mind first and he'd look for a prop to fit the joke?
0:25:12 > 0:25:14- Or was it both? - No, he'd look for the prop,
0:25:14 > 0:25:16and then he'd put the joke to the prop.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18While we're here, I could show you a trick in Tommy's honour.
0:25:18 > 0:25:20I always give people auditions.
0:25:20 > 0:25:23I need you to take out any one that takes your fancy, Bruce.
0:25:23 > 0:25:24Your choice.
0:25:24 > 0:25:25Wonderful.
0:25:25 > 0:25:28- Could you scribble your initials for me, or your autograph?- Yeah.
0:25:28 > 0:25:30I don't usually put my initials.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33Oh, in that case, I'll have to put it on eBay. Brilliant.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35- Could you just say stop for me? - Yeah. Stop.- Brilliant.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37If you could place it back. I'm not going to lie to you.
0:25:37 > 0:25:40I've done this for quite a long time, quite a lot of people.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42I'm not going to find this card.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44- He is.- I am.- No, he is.
0:25:44 > 0:25:48Can you see our friend, Dippy the Duck?
0:25:48 > 0:25:49Oh, the duck, yes!
0:25:51 > 0:25:52I put the cards in this.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56LAUGHTER
0:25:56 > 0:25:59- I'm going to place the cards inside the...- Oh, that's it.
0:25:59 > 0:26:01- And if you could hold the duck for me.- Yeah.
0:26:01 > 0:26:02As Tommy always used to say,
0:26:02 > 0:26:05"I'm sure you've all seen a duck find a card before."
0:26:05 > 0:26:08- That's right!- But you probably haven't seen a blindfolded duck
0:26:08 > 0:26:10- find a card before.- Oh, that's right. I forgot that bit.
0:26:10 > 0:26:12We're going to blindfold him up,
0:26:12 > 0:26:15and then Dippy is going to find the card, Bruce. If I may...
0:26:15 > 0:26:18He can't see through there, can he? No. On the count of three, Bruce.
0:26:18 > 0:26:19We count, one...
0:26:19 > 0:26:21- Two.- ..two, three.
0:26:21 > 0:26:22Three.
0:26:22 > 0:26:24And Dippy takes one card out.
0:26:24 > 0:26:27- Can't believe it.- What was the card you signed your name on?
0:26:27 > 0:26:28Queen of hearts.
0:26:28 > 0:26:30- The queen of hearts. - My favourite card.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31No less, Bruce.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33With my initials on it.
0:26:33 > 0:26:36- And Dippy the Duck. - And Dippy the Duck. Incredible.
0:26:36 > 0:26:39- I'm so glad you got that. - A pleasure.
0:26:39 > 0:26:41- Oh, right, you've got the job. - Oh, thank you. I appreciate that.
0:26:41 > 0:26:43- So go and do your act. - I'll do it now.
0:26:43 > 0:26:44Thank you so much, Bruce.
0:26:46 > 0:26:49APPLAUSE
0:26:49 > 0:26:51What a fabulous day out with Brucie.
0:26:51 > 0:26:54It was a dream come true for me. You know, to be able to spend time
0:26:54 > 0:26:56in the presence of a legend in the world of show business
0:26:56 > 0:26:59is an honour and a privilege and it's something I'll never forget.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02Well, listen, we saw some fabulous close-up magic there of Tommy's.
0:27:02 > 0:27:04I mean, you know, he often, as you were saying,
0:27:04 > 0:27:06he'd get this hilariously wrong, wouldn't he?
0:27:06 > 0:27:08On occasion, but that was through choice.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11And Tommy was very much like Les Dawson in his style of performing.
0:27:11 > 0:27:13He would make a mistake when he wanted to make a mistake,
0:27:13 > 0:27:16because he thought it would make what he was doing much funnier.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19What not a lot of people know is that Tommy was actually such
0:27:19 > 0:27:21a skilled magician, he was actually awarded
0:27:21 > 0:27:24the degree of the Member of the Inner Magic Circle, which is
0:27:24 > 0:27:27the highest award the Magic Circle gives out, and it's an honour.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29I'm immensely proud to be able to say that
0:27:29 > 0:27:31I recently received myself, you know, as my idol...
0:27:31 > 0:27:33APPLAUSE
0:27:33 > 0:27:35Wow.
0:27:36 > 0:27:39It's richly deserved, on the basis of just what we've seen so far.
0:27:39 > 0:27:42You've got a trick for me now. You've got a close-up trick for me.
0:27:42 > 0:27:43Love to, if that's all right.
0:27:43 > 0:27:46- Please.- They say a magician only really does one thing -
0:27:46 > 0:27:48pose the question, what's real and what's illusion?
0:27:48 > 0:27:51And I always like to leave everybody to work out for themselves
0:27:51 > 0:27:52which they think is which.
0:27:52 > 0:27:56But for now, let's take this newspaper as an example.
0:27:56 > 0:28:00I mean, we all know we can believe everything we read, right?
0:28:00 > 0:28:03LAUGHTER
0:28:03 > 0:28:05And that's where this particular illusion begins.
0:28:05 > 0:28:08Xander, you see, I call it an illusion
0:28:08 > 0:28:13because I don't actually tear the newspaper at all.
0:28:13 > 0:28:15- Just looks like it.- OK.
0:28:15 > 0:28:17And this is aided by the fact that it actually
0:28:17 > 0:28:20sounds like the pieces are being torn.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22- Can you hear that?- Yeah, I can.
0:28:22 > 0:28:24It does look very like they're being torn, doesn't it?
0:28:24 > 0:28:25It does.
0:28:25 > 0:28:30And this is so convincing that after the show, people will come up to me
0:28:30 > 0:28:33and they will swear blind that the piece of paper they formerly
0:28:33 > 0:28:38saw as whole is now ripped into lots and lots of smaller pieces.
0:28:38 > 0:28:40Just to be absolutely... Look at that.
0:28:40 > 0:28:43- But it isn't.- Yeah. Oh, really?- You see, these people have been tricked.
0:28:43 > 0:28:46They've been tricked by the senses they have trusted their entire
0:28:46 > 0:28:49lives into believing something they have seen with their own eyes
0:28:49 > 0:28:51is the truth when it isn't.
0:28:51 > 0:28:55- Mm-hm.- You see, magic is very much like the newspapers in that you must
0:28:55 > 0:28:58never, ever believe everything you see.
0:28:59 > 0:29:03MURMURS AND APPLAUSE
0:29:03 > 0:29:06ALEXANDER LAUGHS
0:29:07 > 0:29:09- How did you do...?- I'd like to give that to you.
0:29:09 > 0:29:11Yeah, all right.
0:29:11 > 0:29:13Don't bother filling in the crossword.
0:29:13 > 0:29:16I've already done that one. It's the only one I can do.
0:29:16 > 0:29:19Well, listen, watching Tommy was what put you onto
0:29:19 > 0:29:22the path of becoming the great magician you are today.
0:29:22 > 0:29:25But you've now progressed onto larger illusions as well,
0:29:25 > 0:29:27- haven't you?- I have.- I gather you're going to do something new
0:29:27 > 0:29:30- for us, a new trick.- I would absolutely love to.- Fabulous.
0:29:30 > 0:29:32I also understand you'll need an assistant for this.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35- Yeah.- You're looking for someone good-looking, sassy.
0:29:35 > 0:29:36- Yeah.- Bit of stage presence.
0:29:36 > 0:29:38Alexander, I'd like you to...
0:29:38 > 0:29:43- Delighted.- ..to ask Kimberly back on the stage, if that's OK.
0:29:43 > 0:29:45OK. Yes.
0:29:45 > 0:29:46You know I've got better legs, don't you?
0:29:46 > 0:29:48AWING AND LAUGHING Um...
0:29:48 > 0:29:51ALEXANDER LAUGHS Ladies and gentlemen,
0:29:51 > 0:29:53please welcome back to the stage Miss Kimberly Wyatt.
0:29:53 > 0:29:55APPLAUSE
0:29:57 > 0:30:00- Thank you so much for coming... - You're welcome. No problem.
0:30:00 > 0:30:02- ..and agreeing to do this for me. - Yeah, happy to.
0:30:02 > 0:30:04It is such a privilege and an honour for me to be
0:30:04 > 0:30:08here as part of this wonderful show, specifically here in this particular
0:30:08 > 0:30:11theatre. As Tommy inspired me, I was hoping that together
0:30:11 > 0:30:14we could do something that would inspire
0:30:14 > 0:30:16other young performers out there.
0:30:16 > 0:30:17- Would you be up for that? - I would love to.
0:30:17 > 0:30:19- Fantastic.- I love a bit of magic.
0:30:19 > 0:30:22- Stay with me.- OK. - Just follow my lead.- All right.
0:30:22 > 0:30:25APPLAUSE
0:30:49 > 0:30:51Ladies and gentlemen,
0:30:51 > 0:30:54please watch this very, very closely.
0:31:46 > 0:31:49APPLAUSE
0:32:05 > 0:32:07I was just watching that so closely.
0:32:07 > 0:32:10I was determined to work out how you did it.
0:32:10 > 0:32:12Can you give me any clues? What happened?
0:32:12 > 0:32:13It's fun to fly.
0:32:13 > 0:32:16LAUGHTER
0:32:16 > 0:32:18Oh, that's just insane, isn't it? Thank you so much, Kimberly.
0:32:18 > 0:32:20Very well done. Ladies and gentlemen,
0:32:20 > 0:32:22please give it up for the brilliant Jamie Raven.
0:32:22 > 0:32:25CHEERS AND APPLAUSE
0:32:31 > 0:32:34Now, ladies and gentlemen, forgive my indulgence,
0:32:34 > 0:32:37but hearing about all the artists that have inspired our guests
0:32:37 > 0:32:40this evening made me want to tell you about my inspiration.
0:32:40 > 0:32:43Well, I wanted to be a musician and singer when I was younger,
0:32:43 > 0:32:47and there was only really one voice that stood out above everyone else,
0:32:47 > 0:32:48and that was Bing Crosby.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54RADIO INTERFERENCE
0:32:55 > 0:32:57# Zip-a-dee-doo-dah
0:32:57 > 0:32:59# Zip-a-dee-ay
0:32:59 > 0:33:03# My, oh-my, what a wonderful day
0:33:03 > 0:33:05# Plenty of sunshine... #
0:33:05 > 0:33:08Yeah, I don't come from an especially musical family,
0:33:08 > 0:33:11but we were great listeners to music, and I think that's the crucial thing.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13We had music playing in our house all the time.
0:33:15 > 0:33:17We had Bing Crosby. We had Frank Sinatra.
0:33:17 > 0:33:19We had Ella. It seeps into you.
0:33:19 > 0:33:21You know, it's not the style of music,
0:33:21 > 0:33:24it's the tone of voice of music as well,
0:33:24 > 0:33:26particularly in the case of Bing.
0:33:28 > 0:33:30He had a...he had a storyteller's voice.
0:33:30 > 0:33:34When Bing sings, it's like a monkey climbing through trees.
0:33:34 > 0:33:37Do you know what I mean? He'll sort of swing through a melody.
0:33:37 > 0:33:38He'll grab onto a note here
0:33:38 > 0:33:40and he'll swing along to the next one like that.
0:33:40 > 0:33:42# ..to be a mule
0:33:42 > 0:33:46# And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
0:33:46 > 0:33:49# Every day you meet quite a few. #
0:33:49 > 0:33:52The extraordinary fact about Bing Crosby that isn't really
0:33:52 > 0:33:55talked about enough is the fact that he outsold The Beatles,
0:33:55 > 0:33:58he outsold Elvis, in terms of the sheer number of records
0:33:58 > 0:34:01he sold, the volume of albums he got out.
0:34:03 > 0:34:07My background is choral singing, so it's quite...quite classical.
0:34:07 > 0:34:10Choral singing. It's quite a tight grip. It just has to be.
0:34:10 > 0:34:12For diction and things, reasons like that.
0:34:12 > 0:34:13But you kind of want to just...
0:34:13 > 0:34:15It's nice to be able to relax that grip
0:34:15 > 0:34:17a little bit and just sort of emulate a little bit of Bing.
0:34:17 > 0:34:19Let a little bit of Bing into my life.
0:34:19 > 0:34:22I'm going to be singing Stranger In Paradise,
0:34:22 > 0:34:23which of course Bing sang.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26It's one of those songs... I guess it's like...
0:34:26 > 0:34:28it's like an old family friend.
0:34:28 > 0:34:30I've just sort of known it all my life, really.
0:34:30 > 0:34:33What's exciting for me is this is the first time
0:34:33 > 0:34:36I will ever have performed it live in front of an audience.
0:34:36 > 0:34:40I'm hoping that Bing will teach me how to...how to sing this.
0:34:40 > 0:34:43# Zip-a-dee-doo-dah zip-zip-zip-a-dee-ay. #
0:34:43 > 0:34:47APPLAUSE
0:35:02 > 0:35:05# Take my hand
0:35:05 > 0:35:08# I'm a stranger in paradise
0:35:08 > 0:35:11# All lost in a wonderland
0:35:11 > 0:35:15# A stranger in paradise
0:35:15 > 0:35:18# If I stand starry-eyed
0:35:18 > 0:35:21# That's a danger in paradise
0:35:21 > 0:35:25# For mortals who stand beside
0:35:25 > 0:35:28# An angel like you
0:35:30 > 0:35:32# Take my hand
0:35:32 > 0:35:35# I'm a stranger in paradise
0:35:35 > 0:35:39# Don't send me in dark despair
0:35:39 > 0:35:42# From all that I hunger for
0:35:42 > 0:35:46# But open your angel's arms
0:35:46 > 0:35:49# To the stranger in paradise
0:35:49 > 0:35:53# And tell him that he need be
0:35:53 > 0:35:56# A stranger no more
0:35:56 > 0:36:01# I saw your face
0:36:01 > 0:36:04# And I ascended
0:36:04 > 0:36:08# Out of the commonplace
0:36:08 > 0:36:11# Into the rare
0:36:11 > 0:36:14# Somewhere in space
0:36:14 > 0:36:18# I hang suspended
0:36:18 > 0:36:22# Until I know
0:36:22 > 0:36:26# There's a chance that you care
0:36:29 > 0:36:34# Won't you answer the fervent prayer
0:36:34 > 0:36:38# Of a stranger in paradise?

0:40:59 > 0:41:03And I loved that... Sometimes I feel uncomfortable about my jokes,

0:42:16 > 0:42:19she wanted from that final surgery, to stop ageing.
0:42:19 > 0:42:20So why are we sad?

0:46:19 > 0:46:21# Calm and happy and bright. #
0:46:21 > 0:46:25He got into the business when he was three years old.

0:46:28 > 0:46:34and his father and his uncle, you know, the Will Mastin Trio.
0:46:34 > 0:46:38And by watching all the performers that he was on the bill with,

0:46:42 > 0:46:46# Won't go to Coney Any beach is...#
0:46:46 > 0:46:50So many people have been inspired by the great Sammy Davis Jr.

0:46:57 > 0:46:59There were lots of tap dancers I admired,
0:46:59 > 0:47:03but I think of all of them, Sammy Davis is my favourite.
0:47:03 > 0:47:07He did things with his feet that you couldn't believe.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29I think we could get a bit more, sort of, comedy out of it, you know.
0:47:31 > 0:47:35# Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall
0:47:35 > 0:47:39# Like the seashore clings to the sea
0:47:39 > 0:47:42# Like you'll never get rid of your shadow
0:47:42 > 0:47:43- # Sir Bruce - Oh
0:47:43 > 0:47:46# You'll never get rid of me. #
0:47:46 > 0:47:50The beats that he got from just doing that with his feet,
0:47:50 > 0:47:54they'd just... And you'd hear all these beats coming out.
0:47:54 > 0:47:56You couldn't believe where they came from.
0:47:56 > 0:48:01So he was...he was, in my mind, a great dancer.

0:48:07 > 0:48:09and that is 100%.
0:48:09 > 0:48:12There's no, you know, "Oh, he was all right," all that.

0:49:28 > 0:49:29- Thank you.- Fantastic.
0:49:29 > 0:49:33You know, I'd say back in the 1990s, when everybody was busy,
0:49:33 > 0:49:35but they were all focusing on Britpop, I think
0:49:35 > 0:49:39the most exciting thing to happen in that decade was Beverley Knight.
0:49:39 > 0:49:41- Oh, thank you. - Absolutely extraordinary.
0:49:41 > 0:49:43So where did it start?
0:49:43 > 0:49:49Oh, it started kind of concurrently - church... At home,
0:49:49 > 0:49:51my parents always took us to church.
0:49:51 > 0:49:56And music... Huge part of, kind of, the whole gospel community.
0:49:56 > 0:49:59So it started there. And then also at school.
0:49:59 > 0:50:01I just happened to go to a fantastic school
0:50:01 > 0:50:03that cared about extracurricular activities,
0:50:03 > 0:50:07so they encouraged my music and my drama and everything.
0:50:07 > 0:50:09There we are. And then you took
0:50:09 > 0:50:11the big step of going into West End musicals.
0:50:11 > 0:50:14- Yes.- You've had just a string of hits there.
0:50:14 > 0:50:18Who knew, when I was Sandy in Grease at Highfields School,
0:50:18 > 0:50:22that I was going to kind of come back to theatre?

0:50:36 > 0:50:38Well, the man who gave us soul music.
0:50:38 > 0:50:42It wasn't called soul music before he came along in the '50s
0:50:42 > 0:50:45and changed everything - took it out of the church,
0:50:45 > 0:50:49put it on the pop charts, and it became soul.
0:50:49 > 0:50:51The late, great Sam Cooke.
0:50:51 > 0:50:55APPLAUSE
0:50:57 > 0:50:58- Indisputably...- Yeah.

0:51:00 > 0:51:03- Absolutely. - I can't wait to hear this.
0:51:03 > 0:51:06- Well, let's find out why Sam Cooke means so much to you.- Yes.
0:51:10 > 0:51:12# Don't know much about history... #
0:51:12 > 0:51:17If you listen closely to any soul singer, of any decade,
0:51:17 > 0:51:19you'll trace them back to Sam.
0:51:19 > 0:51:23I was just absolutely mesmerised by the power
0:51:23 > 0:51:28and the delivery of this voice,
0:51:28 > 0:51:31disembodied voice, coming out of this 33
0:51:31 > 0:51:33that went round and round and round, and I'd just stand there
0:51:33 > 0:51:36and just stare at it going round,
0:51:36 > 0:51:38and it just took me to another world.
0:51:39 > 0:51:43He died in an America where he couldn't vote,
0:51:43 > 0:51:46where he was still treated as a third-class citizen.
0:51:46 > 0:51:49As Sam was, you know, the man he was -
0:51:49 > 0:51:52dreamt of better things and better days -
0:51:52 > 0:51:55a song like A Change Is Gonna Come
0:51:55 > 0:51:58carries not just the weight
0:51:58 > 0:52:02of history behind it,
0:52:02 > 0:52:05because it's so beautifully crafted and is a masterpiece,
0:52:05 > 0:52:11but it carries the huge responsibility
0:52:11 > 0:52:13of delivering the message
0:52:13 > 0:52:15absolutely faultlessly.
0:52:15 > 0:52:18He'd written this song that has become
0:52:18 > 0:52:21a torch throughout the decades,
0:52:21 > 0:52:27and indeed Obama had it at his inauguration ceremony.
0:52:27 > 0:52:30When I step up to the mic and sing that song,
0:52:30 > 0:52:31all those things,
0:52:31 > 0:52:34all those responsibilities, all those thoughts,
0:52:34 > 0:52:38all those feelings will be with me from the very first note.
0:52:38 > 0:52:42And the very first note is a big note.
0:52:42 > 0:52:46Paying homage to Sam Cooke,
0:52:46 > 0:52:47the father of soul...
0:52:48 > 0:52:52..is one of the biggest responsibilities
0:52:52 > 0:52:57and also one of the biggest honours that I could ever have.

0:58:57 > 0:59:00I mean, one of the things you always dread... Cos obviously,
0:59:00 > 0:59:02as someone who's spent quite a lot of my professional career

0:59:16 > 0:59:17pass it off as your own.
0:59:17 > 0:59:20It's that funny thing where things just fall into place, isn't it?
0:59:20 > 0:59:23We would sometimes make up our characters when we started
0:59:23 > 0:59:25rehearsing at the beginning of a week, and you think...
0:59:25 > 0:59:28- Oh, yeah.- Some of them...- Some of them, you start with a hairstyle.
0:59:28 > 0:59:31Yes. "Haven't had a Scottish one for a while."
0:59:32 > 0:59:35Now, Catherine, who is your comedy inspiration?
0:59:35 > 0:59:40My comedy inspiration is the supreme Victoria Wood.
0:59:40 > 0:59:43APPLAUSE

1:00:05 > 1:00:08- You know that.- She doesn't. - You see all the people,

1:00:09 > 1:00:12- To work with her.- They fight to work with her.- Absolutely.
1:00:12 > 1:00:13Incredible roll call, isn't it?
1:00:13 > 1:00:16Now, before you sing one of Victoria's classic routines,
1:00:16 > 1:00:19let's just find out why she was so inspiring to you.
1:00:24 > 1:00:27Well, there was so much when I was growing up, you know,
1:00:27 > 1:00:29that would be event TV, comedy-wise, you know.
1:00:29 > 1:00:32Two Ronnies, Benny Hill, Little and Large.
1:00:32 > 1:00:38I mean, so much stuff. And then Victoria Wood entered my life.
1:00:38 > 1:00:39I'm not bothered.
1:00:41 > 1:00:45And that blew it away, because
1:00:45 > 1:00:48she was the first woman I'd seen being funny.
1:00:48 > 1:00:51I really looked forward to it, and I would never get bored of it.

1:01:01 > 1:01:03..carrots...
1:01:03 > 1:01:06Seeing her perform and seeing the other people around her,
1:01:06 > 1:01:08that is a comedy masterclass.
1:01:08 > 1:01:10You don't realise that you're studying it.
1:01:10 > 1:01:11It just seeps into you.
1:01:11 > 1:01:15I'm definitely where I am because of her.
1:01:20 > 1:01:24The Ballad Of Barry And Freda, I was very excited to see it
1:01:24 > 1:01:27when I first watched it. It was just like,
1:01:27 > 1:01:31"Oh, my God, imagine being the person that does that."
1:01:31 > 1:01:35# Let's do it Let's do it tonight
1:01:35 > 1:01:37# But he said I can't do it, I can't do it... #
1:01:37 > 1:01:39It kind of takes you on its own journey,
1:01:39 > 1:01:43and I think the orchestration of it as well is so brilliant,
1:01:43 > 1:01:45because it kind of just runs away with you.
1:01:45 > 1:01:47# Stop pouting, stop shouting
1:01:47 > 1:01:50# You know I pulled a muscle when I did that grouting.
1:01:50 > 1:01:54# I can't do it I can't do it tonight. #
1:01:54 > 1:01:56And it's her eye for detail.
1:01:56 > 1:02:00It's her eye for the ordinary,
1:02:00 > 1:02:02the kind of everyday
1:02:02 > 1:02:05but then becomes so beautifully nuanced.
1:02:05 > 1:02:11That is what's so special and brilliant and memorable.
1:02:11 > 1:02:13# Cos I know just how I want you to behave... #
1:02:13 > 1:02:15She's just so brilliant.
1:02:15 > 1:02:18She's just so brilliant, and it's...
1:02:18 > 1:02:23Really, I don't know if I can do her the service I would like to do her.
1:02:23 > 1:02:25So as nervous as I am...
1:02:26 > 1:02:27..I can't wait.
1:02:34 > 1:02:38With her take on Victoria Wood's Ballad Of Barry And Freda,

1:02:59 > 1:03:02# Freda drained her cocoa cup
1:03:04 > 1:03:07# She licked her lips She felt sublime
1:03:07 > 1:03:11# She switched off Gardeners' Question Time
1:03:11 > 1:03:14# Barry cringed with fear and dread
1:03:14 > 1:03:20# As Freda grabbed his tie and said
1:03:22 > 1:03:24# Let's do it, let's do it
1:03:24 > 1:03:27# Do it while the mood is right
1:03:27 > 1:03:32# I'm feeling appealing I've really got an appetite
1:03:32 > 1:03:34# I'm on fire with desire
1:03:34 > 1:03:37# I could handle half the tenors in a male voice choir
1:03:37 > 1:03:40# Let's do it, let's do it tonight
1:03:40 > 1:03:44# But he said I can't do it, I can't do it
1:03:44 > 1:03:46# I don't believe in too much sex
1:03:46 > 1:03:51# This fashion for passion turns us into nervous wrecks
1:03:51 > 1:03:53# No derision, my decision
1:03:53 > 1:03:56# I'd rather watch The Spinners on the television
1:03:56 > 1:03:59# I can't do it, can't do it tonight
1:03:59 > 1:04:03# So she said Let's do it, let's do it
1:04:03 > 1:04:06# Do it till our hearts go boom
1:04:06 > 1:04:08# Go native, creative
1:04:08 > 1:04:10# Living in the living room

1:04:20 > 1:04:22# I can't do it, I can't do it
1:04:22 > 1:04:25# I know I'll only get it wrong
1:04:25 > 1:04:27# Don't angle for me to dangle
1:04:27 > 1:04:29# Me arms have never been that strong
1:04:29 > 1:04:31# Stop pouting, stop shouting
1:04:31 > 1:04:34# You know I pulled a muscle when I did that grouting
1:04:34 > 1:04:38# I can't do it, can't do it tonight
1:04:38 > 1:04:41# So she said, Let's do it, let's do it
1:04:41 > 1:04:43# Share a night of wild romance
1:04:43 > 1:04:48# Frenetic, poetic This could be your last big chance
1:04:48 > 1:04:51# To quote Milton, to eat Stilton
1:04:51 > 1:04:54# To roll with gay abandon on the tufted Wilton
1:04:54 > 1:04:57# Let's do it, let's do it tonight
