0:10:18 > 0:10:23- I was slowing down as I was passing - village after village.
0:10:23 > 0:10:27- I stopped in the end - since I was the one driving.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33- When I started reading - these things in the newspapers...

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- ..I was consumed with anger.
0:11:42 > 0:11:48- It makes me feel like it's my fault, - that I've killed these people.
0:11:48 > 0:11:52- To instantly blame others was wrong.
0:11:54 > 0:11:59- Some time ago - I remember the Panorama programme..
0:12:00 > 0:12:04- ..showed an interview - with Peter Wright...
0:12:04 > 0:12:09- ..the Chief Constable at the time...

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- My parents - discovered I had a problem...
0:13:15 > 0:13:19- ..from two or three years of age.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23- If a room was poorly lit...
0:13:24 > 0:13:28- ..or if they took me out at night, - I'd bump into things...

0:14:25 > 0:14:27- ..but I couldn't see the blackboard.
0:14:28 > 0:14:32- I couldn't do my work, so I left - school with no qualifications.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38- ..because - I haven't been fair on myself.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41- Did it turn you into - a resentful person?
0:14:41 > 0:14:45- Did you feel it was unfair - that it was happening to you?

0:14:52 > 0:14:57- I became a kind of recluse for - 12 years when my sight deteriorated.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20- ..and I walked into a red post van.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23- Can you believe - I walked into a red van?
0:15:23 > 0:15:26- That's when I knew - I had to do something about it.
0:15:26 > 0:15:31- I felt as if I'd reached - a crossroads in my life.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33- I either went this way...
0:15:33 > 0:15:38- ..and continued to be a recluse...
0:15:38 > 0:15:41- ..or I went this way - and started a new life.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56- A few months earlier - I'd enquired about a guide dog.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22- Anyway, I sent the forms away...
0:16:22 > 0:16:24- ..and I was called to Bolton...
0:16:25 > 0:16:28- ..to the guide dog training centre.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33- I did a series of assessments.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35- Almost a year to the day later...
0:16:35 > 0:16:39- ..I was given my first dog, Joy, - a black Labrador.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42- I had to pick her up - from Leamington Spa.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45- I spent three weeks there training.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47- I came home...
0:16:47 > 0:16:51- ..and people saw me - as I was walking around.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54- I was conscious - I was passing people I knew.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57- I'm sure they were saying, - "What a miserable man."
0:16:58 > 0:16:59- But I couldn't see them.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03- People passed me - but I didn't recognize them.
0:17:03 > 0:17:07- I wanted to go out with the dog - but I didn't know how to play it.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10- There was only one thing for it, - to get on with it.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14- So I went out with the dog - and thought, 'This is who I am.'
0:17:15 > 0:17:19- If people accept me, fine, - if they don't, it's their problem.
0:17:19 > 0:17:23- You'd be surprised how many people - I've grown up with...
0:17:23 > 0:17:26- ..and worked with over the years...
0:17:26 > 0:17:30- ..that are stunned into silence when - they see me walking on the street.
0:17:31 > 0:17:33- I look at them but they say nothing.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37- I walk past them 10 yards - and they start talking.
0:17:37 > 0:17:42- That hurts because I'm the same - person I was before losing my sight.
0:17:42 > 0:17:44- But some people - still don't talk to me.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47- Is it because of the disability?
0:17:47 > 0:17:52- I don't like the word disability, - but is it because you're blind...
0:17:52 > 0:17:58- ..or because your anger - changed your personality?
0:17:58 > 0:18:01- I was angry with myself - and angry with my family.
0:18:01 > 0:18:03- People don't know what to say.
0:18:05 > 0:18:09- They're afraid they might say - something I don't want to hear.
0:18:10 > 0:18:14- I've broad shoulders, - they can say whatever they're like.
0:18:15 > 0:18:17- With RP...
0:18:18 > 0:18:22- ..does it mean that your vision - gradually deteriorates?
0:18:23 > 0:18:25- What can you see at the moment?
0:18:25 > 0:18:29- Can you tell the difference - between light and dark?
0:18:29 > 0:18:34- I can tell if the sun's out, - if it's daylight and if it's dark.
0:18:34 > 0:18:38- But the older I'm getting, - the more difficult it becomes.
0:18:39 > 0:18:43- Which means you have to get on with - your life and make the most of it.
0:18:43 > 0:18:48- Since bumping into the red van - and reaching that crossroads...
0:18:48 > 0:18:53- ..you're determined - to make the most of your time.
0:18:53 > 0:18:59- Despite being blind, you've ridden - a motorbike at 100mph.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02- I've also - abseiled down the Marquis' Tower.
0:19:02 > 0:19:05- I've driven a car - around Silverstone.
0:19:05 > 0:19:09- I had the track to myself. Who'd - share a track with a blind driver?
0:19:09 > 0:19:10- Not many.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12- Not many.- - I had an hour on the track.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15- I consider life a gamble.
0:19:15 > 0:19:19- Unfortunately, this is the card - I've been dealt...
0:19:19 > 0:19:22- ..but I have to make the most of it.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24- I've been in a situation...
0:19:24 > 0:19:28- ..where there's been - no light at the end of the tunnel.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30- I'd lost hope.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33- But when I accepted my situation - 13 years ago...
0:19:34 > 0:19:37- ..and got my first guide dog...
0:19:37 > 0:19:39- ..my life changed.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42- I'm as happy now - as I was when I was a child.
