0:00:41 > 0:00:45- Elwyn Edwards and Ceri Hughes, - welcome to the programme.

0:00:45 > 0:00:50- Elwyn, when did you first realize - you could communicate with spirits?

0:00:50 > 0:00:55- It was 1986, and my wife - and I had bought carpets...

0:00:56 > 0:00:59- ..from a large house - that had been vacated.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03- One Saturday morning, three of us - went to lift the old carpets.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05- My uncle was with me.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10- He'd been through all the rooms - downstairs, apart from one.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14- Walking into that room - was like stepping into an icebox.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19- A gust of cold air surrounded me and - the hairs on my arms stood on end.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21- A chill went down my spine.

0:01:21 > 0:01:26- I couldn't understand what was - happening. There was a loud bang.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30- But the room was empty. - No-one else was in there.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33- We went upstairs but found nothing.

0:01:34 > 0:01:39- We were nearing the end of the job - and it was starting to get dark.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43- I said to the wife - and the lad who was with us...

0:01:43 > 0:01:47- .."You finish this room - and I'll start on the other."

0:01:47 > 0:01:50- I walked in - and it was sweltering inside.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54- It was completely different - from all the other rooms.

0:01:54 > 0:01:59- The street lights were on, - casting shadows across the window...

0:01:59 > 0:02:01- ..like lightning.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04- I thought a tree outside - was casting shadows.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08- But I knew there were no trees - in the vicinity.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10- I couldn't explain it.

0:02:10 > 0:02:15- The others came in - and helped me roll up the carpet.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20- I leant up against the wall - and a loud bang occurred beside me.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- The most putrid smell - filled the room.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27- I was scared stiff, so I ran out.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29- It took my breath away.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31- I was clueless as to what it was.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36- I returned on the Monday night - to sell some of the furniture...

0:02:36 > 0:02:37- ..to a local person.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- We walked into the cold room - and heard a bang.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- He said, "He's still here. - Come on, let's go."

0:02:45 > 0:02:47- "What do you mean?" I said.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- "I lived here for 18 months. There's - something wrong with this place."

0:02:51 > 0:02:54- He was so scared, he didn't return.

0:02:54 > 0:03:00- After that, I contacted - Elwyn Roberts, Llandegai...

0:03:00 > 0:03:02- ..and he came over.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07- It was the spirit - of a little boy who had drowned...

0:03:07 > 0:03:11- ..in 1938.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13- He was about 10 years old.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17- The boy who lived in the house - had seen him several times.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- That's when it began.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22- How old were you at the time?

0:03:22 > 0:03:24- I was in my forties.

0:03:24 > 0:03:29- For you, Ceri, you started seeing - spirits much sooner than this.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33- I think I started seeing spirits - at a very young age.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36- But when I was eight years old...

0:03:36 > 0:03:37- ..I was riding a horse...

0:03:38 > 0:03:42- ..on the old road between - Llanfair Talhaiarn and Llangernyw...

0:03:42 > 0:03:46- ..when the horse - came to a complete standstill.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48- I looked up...

0:03:49 > 0:03:53- ..and there was forestry - on both sides of the road.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56- I saw a monk come through the trees.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00- He was walking very slowly - through the trees.

0:04:00 > 0:04:06- The horse bolted and galloped - for about half a mile...

0:04:06 > 0:04:12- ..before stopping suddenly - and carrying on as normal.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15- Did you ever see that monk again?

0:04:15 > 0:04:19- I think so. We were - having problems in the house.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22- Elwyn came to visit us.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26- When the children were babies...

0:04:26 > 0:04:30- ..their toys - would start playing by themselves.

0:04:30 > 0:04:35- One of the rooms at home was cold - and I didn't like going in there.

0:04:36 > 0:04:42- There was a really nasty smell - emanating from a small cupboard.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- I think it was the spirit...

0:04:46 > 0:04:50- ..of the monk - that was inhabiting our house.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53- So you went over there, Elwyn?

0:04:53 > 0:04:55- Yes, I made a mistake.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59- We went upstairs - and I fell into a deep trance.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Elwyn taught me - that if I went into a deep trance...

0:05:03 > 0:05:07- ..I was to put my hand here - and take three deep breaths.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10- But I've stopped doing that - since that night.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15- During this deep trance, I could see - the monk and a burning monastery.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20- I saw soldiers slaying monks and - they strangled this particular monk.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24- His name was Rhygyfarch ab Einion.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- I think he was from Maenan.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29- But he might've been - from near Llangollen.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- He was strangled - and I relived his death.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36- You relived the death?

0:05:36 > 0:05:38- You relived the death?- - Yes, while I was in this trance.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40- But somehow I got out of it.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45- I'm not sure if the monk - has completely left the house.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47- Is it OK at home now?

0:05:48 > 0:05:50- It's not bad.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52- Why's that?

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- Not all of them have left. I see - spirits approaching the front door.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02- That happens often, - as if they're about to enter.

0:06:03 > 0:06:04- Does it frighten you?

0:06:04 > 0:06:07- Does it frighten you?- - I don't want to see them, you know.

0:06:07 > 0:06:13- If I enter a bedroom, I just think, - "I don't want to see you, thanks."

0:06:14 > 0:06:18- Is it just you who sees them - or do the children see them too?

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- Does your husband see them?

0:06:21 > 0:06:23- Does your husband see them?- - My husband doesn't.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- I think one of my children - can sense something.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- Is it something - you're born with, Elwyn?

0:06:30 > 0:06:32- Yes, every one of us...

0:06:32 > 0:06:34- ..is born psychic.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37- Some people - choose not to use their gift.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40- Children are incredibly psychic.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42- Many children have difficulties.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- Parents think they're - talking to an imaginary friend...

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- ..when often - they're talking to a spirit.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54- And when you walk into a room...

0:06:55 > 0:06:57- ..do you ever get the sensation...

0:06:58 > 0:07:01- ..that something's wrong - or do you feel a presence?

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- For example, - when you entered this room...

0:07:05 > 0:07:07- ..did you sense anything here?

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- Something comes and goes - but you have to block it.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15- There are so many - other people in the room too.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- I sensed there were a lot - in the green room.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21- So did I. What did you sense?

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- I just felt their presence.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25- I just felt their presence.- - Yes, I did as well.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29- In the green room, - while you were waiting to come on...

0:07:30 > 0:07:35- ..you could sense spirits - coming and going in there?

0:07:35 > 0:07:39- The truth of the matter is, - they're everywhere.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- They're even in the car. - It can be day or night.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47- It's the person, - or the psychic, who counts.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51- Do you see these people - or do you sense them?

0:07:51 > 0:07:57- There are two ways of seeing them. - Some people see them walking.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59- I see them in my mind.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- There are two ways.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04- We also get impressions.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08- For example, a person from London...

0:08:08 > 0:08:10- ..a Welshman...

0:08:10 > 0:08:13- ..who's since crossed the border...

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- ..bought watercolour paintings.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- Many of them were behind glass.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21- The paintings - started to change at night.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25- Things were added to the paintings.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29- Colours were more pronounced - and birds were added.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33- He had a maid, but she was - too scared to enter the house.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37- He told me about it and I had - an image of a painter in my mind.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- He had a small beard.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42- It was a black and white image.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47- He wore a beret on his head. - His name was Jacques. He was French.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- That's all I knew.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53- Four of us - went to a spiritualist evening...

0:08:53 > 0:08:55- ..a few nights later in Harlech.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00- They were held every Monday night. - I didn't know anyone there.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04- One of the men taking part - pointed to me and said...

0:09:04 > 0:09:06- .."Keep on - with the French connection.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- "You're on the right track."

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- I'd never seen him before.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13- The man who owned the paintings...

0:09:14 > 0:09:18- ..took them to a place like Bonhams - in London to get them valued.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23- The man told him that Jack Martin - paintings were of little value.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25- "Who's that?" he said.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28- "He was - a famous painter in his time.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- "We've a catalogue of painters."

0:09:31 > 0:09:35- He looked through it - and came across Jack Martin, 1850.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38- He'd lived in France for 20 years...

0:09:38 > 0:09:41- ..which proves it was the spirit.

0:09:42 > 0:09:47- Do you know why they come back? - Is there a reason?

0:09:47 > 0:09:50- Some come back whenever they choose.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54- They cross over for a chat. - I get it all the time.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57- Others can't cross over.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00- That's when difficulties arise.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05- They leave this world, for example, - in a car accident or suicide...

0:10:05 > 0:10:07- ..and they can't cross over.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11- I help a spirit - find a way of crossing over...

0:10:11 > 0:10:15- ..by calling back - one of his/her family members.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17- The mother, usually.

0:10:17 > 0:10:22- A spirit then leaves with the mother - and the problem's resolved.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26- Can you pick and choose - when you contact them?

0:10:26 > 0:10:31- I've been asked that question - many times for different reasons.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33- One woman wanted to know...

0:10:33 > 0:10:37- ..why her father - left her very little in his will...

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- ..believe it or not.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- But it's up to the person - on the other side.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44- It's up to him or her.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- It's the spirit who decides - whether or not to contact me.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54- What do you say to those - who think you're making all this up?

0:10:55 > 0:10:57- I've nothing to prove.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01- I don't expect those who've - never experienced it to believe me.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- Ceri knows. It's up to people - what they want to believe.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10- I've one last question. - Are you religious people?

0:11:10 > 0:11:15- Do you believe in God - and the Holy Spirit?

0:11:15 > 0:11:22- Yes, I do. I'm not a regular chapel - goer, although I belong to a chapel.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- But I do believe in God.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29- Is this - the flip side of the coin, Elwyn?

0:11:30 > 0:11:34- Like Ceri, - I believe in Christianity.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40- I once asked a monk, "Who's God?"

0:11:42 > 0:11:44- He said, "There is no God."

0:11:44 > 0:11:46- This monk lived in 1293.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50- "What is God then?"

0:11:50 > 0:11:53- "God is the shared common belief...

0:11:53 > 0:11:57- "..when likeminded people - come together.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- "That's God."

0:11:59 > 0:12:04- The coming together to worship. - That's his explanation.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07- Thank you very much - for keeping me company.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11- It's fitting - that we end with religion...

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- ..since faith healing - is our next topic.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- Ceri and Elwyn, thank you very much.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- It's time for a break now.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- I'll be joined - by two more guests in Part 2.

0:12:26 > 0:12:26- .

0:12:29 > 0:12:29- Subtitles

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- Welcome back.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- Our next topic is faith healing.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Welcome to you both.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48- Let me start with you, Mererid, - and your malady.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50- What exactly was your illness?

0:12:50 > 0:12:56- In 1993 I fell ill. I was a teacher - at Ysgol Friars at the time.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- It was the end of my first year - and I caught a nasty bout of flu.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04- There was lots to do, - so I battled on regardless.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- The summer holidays - soon approached...

0:13:09 > 0:13:13- ..and when the new term started, - I knew something was wrong.

0:13:13 > 0:13:18- I was preparing lesson plans - and so on...

0:13:18 > 0:13:23- ..but I had difficulty remembering - what it was I was meant to teach.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25- As the month went on...

0:13:25 > 0:13:30- ..I was having difficulty moving - from one classroom to the other.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33- I didn't have my own classroom, - I moved around.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- What was the doctor's diagnosis?

0:13:36 > 0:13:38- He didn't know at the time.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- It takes time for ME - to be diagnosed.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46- It was the end of November when I - was finally diagnosed with ME.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- It must've been - a difficult time for the family.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54- Yes, it was because we didn't know - what was going to happen.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57- Mererid had bought a house...

0:13:58 > 0:14:01- ..but she'd only moved in a month...

0:14:01 > 0:14:05- ..before starting work - in the September.

0:14:05 > 0:14:10- The plan was for my son Gwion - to live with her too.

0:14:10 > 0:14:14- But that dream was shattered - and she had to return home.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17- We helped each other through it.

0:14:17 > 0:14:22- You had your own ill health - to deal with, didn't you?

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- Not during that time, no.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26- Not during that time, no.- - It was Spring 1996.

0:14:26 > 0:14:31- I found a lump in my breast.

0:14:31 > 0:14:35- When I visited the doctor - I feared the worst.

0:14:35 > 0:14:40- My face said it all - when I returned home.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- I'm sure you felt hopeless at times.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47- When did you - turn to religion, Mererid?

0:14:47 > 0:14:50- I'd had a Sunday school upbringing.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53- I played the organ in chapel - and so on.

0:14:54 > 0:14:59- During my time teaching at Ysgol - Friars, I'd say I was agnostic.

0:14:59 > 0:15:03- I taught the children - some religious education...

0:15:03 > 0:15:05- ..but that's as far as it went.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09- During the first three years - of having ME...

0:15:09 > 0:15:15- ..there'd been talk of faith healing - services in the chapel...

0:15:15 > 0:15:18- ..but I didn't want to know - at the time.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- It sounded strange to me - and scared me a little.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25- But Mam's illness - made us open to alternatives.

0:15:25 > 0:15:31- We'd reached the point - where we were desperate, in a way.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33- The stakes were higher.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37- Were you eager to take the reins, - Margaret?

0:15:37 > 0:15:41- Not at all. I wondered - what the heck it was all about!

0:15:41 > 0:15:44- I'd never entertained the idea.

0:15:44 > 0:15:50- But we had a very kind - chapel minister at the time.

0:15:50 > 0:15:56- All the local people - rallied around...

0:15:56 > 0:15:58- ..and supported us.

0:15:58 > 0:16:04- After a little persuasion, - I went to Lampeter...

0:16:21 > 0:16:25- We'd get up - and hold morning services...

0:16:26 > 0:16:28- ..which included hymn singing.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34- We sung these hymns, - and if you were a Welsh speaker...

0:16:34 > 0:16:37- ..you sang them in Welsh.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43- Those who couldn't speak Welsh - sang them in English. It was fun.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48- I understand a special service - was held at the end of the course?

0:16:48 > 0:16:52- Yes, it was a service of blessing...

0:17:01 > 0:17:03- It was foreign to me.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07- But anyway, I put myself forward...

0:17:07 > 0:17:11- ..and asked that Mererid and me - would be blessed.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15- Following the service, - we had the opportunity...

0:17:15 > 0:17:19- ..to buy cassettes of the meetings.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47- The second hymn I listened to - was I Dduw Y Bo'r Gogoniant.

0:17:48 > 0:17:53- All of a sudden, I was overcome - with the strangest of sensations.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57- It's hard to put into words...

0:17:58 > 0:18:02- ..but it was like an electric - current had washed over me...

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- ..and my breathing became deeper.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08- Something very unusual - had come over me.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11- It lasted for quite some time.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14- In the end, - I was filled with enormous joy...

0:18:14 > 0:18:17- ..and cried tears of happiness.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21- I felt certain - that I would be cured.

0:18:22 > 0:18:23- It happened that quickly?

0:18:23 > 0:18:25- It happened that quickly?- - The certainty of it did, yes...

0:18:26 > 0:18:29- ..although it took me a while - to fully recover.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33- You'd been struck by - the realization of it all.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36- But how long - did it take you to recover?

0:18:36 > 0:18:40- In all honesty, it took 10 years.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45- It was May 2007.

0:18:47 > 0:18:52- This time, I was joined by a friend - who was also suffering from ME.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54- She'd come to stay with me.

0:18:55 > 0:19:00- A similar thing - happened suddenly once again.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04- I felt - an electrical charge once again.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07- Was it the same kind of feeling?

0:19:07 > 0:19:11- Yes, it was, - though it felt a little different...

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- ..in that I felt - physically manipulated.

0:19:16 > 0:19:21- It was if my muscles and joints - were being treated as well.

0:19:21 > 0:19:26- I felt the effects - immediately afterwards.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29- I was steadier on my feet.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32- It's interesting that you said...

0:19:32 > 0:19:35- ..you were agnostic - before these experiences.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40- We were open to everything - but hadn't analyzed it too deeply.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44- Faith healing - incurs deeper emotions.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48- An experience like this - encourages you...

0:19:48 > 0:19:51- ..to practise it.

0:19:51 > 0:19:57- Did you ever think of praying - for yourself during your illness?

0:19:57 > 0:20:02- Yes, I did. - I take nothing for granted.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07- But you put yourself - in other people's hands...

0:20:07 > 0:20:09- ..such as doctors and nurses.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12- Do you still attend - the Alpha Course?

0:20:24 > 0:20:29- Different ministers - have come and gone too.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- Are the services - like chapel services?

0:20:33 > 0:20:36- What exactly do they entail?

0:20:36 > 0:20:43- It's similar to a chapel service.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47- It involves a bit of everything, - to be honest.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51- There's hymn singing, - as I already mentioned.

0:20:52 > 0:20:57- Welsh-language and English language - renditions are sung in unison.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Everybody enjoys - each other's company.

0:21:00 > 0:21:06- Speakers share their experiences - during the services.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12- Are they reminiscent - of American gospel services?

0:21:12 > 0:21:16- No, they're not at all like that.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- They're more of a coming together...

0:21:22 > 0:21:25- ..of friends.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- It's a chapel service - to begin with...

0:21:28 > 0:21:33- ..followed by a healing session - with hands being placed on you.

0:21:33 > 0:21:38- When I attended, three sets - of couples stood at the front...

0:21:38 > 0:21:42- ..and individuals, in their turn, - went up to them...

0:21:42 > 0:21:47- ..and asked them to pray - for themselves or for others.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50- Is it held in a chapel or a hall?

0:21:50 > 0:21:52- Usually it's in a hall.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56- Recent services - have been held at Gregynog...

0:21:56 > 0:22:00- ..in the music room there.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04- But they were held - in a chapel in Lampeter.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07- A place of worship isn't necessary?

0:22:08 > 0:22:09- No.

0:22:10 > 0:22:15- As I mentioned, we discussed - the supernatural world in Part 1.

0:22:15 > 0:22:20- What do you say to people who say - that faith healing is nonsense?

0:22:21 > 0:22:23- When people turn to you and say...

0:22:23 > 0:22:27- .."There must be - another reason for your recovery"...

0:22:27 > 0:22:29- ..what do you tell them?

0:22:29 > 0:22:36- Every one of us - is made up of mind, body and soul.

0:22:37 > 0:22:42- Sometimes you can't always explain - the reason for things.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- Since we all have - a mind, body and soul...

0:22:46 > 0:22:51- ..you take - whatever help is out there.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53- You go to the doctor.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- If you open yourself up - to religion...

0:22:56 > 0:23:00- ..you get a boost in other ways.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- It's not an easy topic to discuss...

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- ..and we haven't - spoken about it much with anyone.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09- Some viewers might think, "Hm!"
