0:02:55 > 0:02:59- ..we sell them on - or compete with them at shows.

0:03:25 > 0:03:31- After I buy them, she's the one - who takes care of them.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36- She's lucky, - because she's so small and light...

0:03:36 > 0:03:39- ..that she can ride - the smaller horses.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13- ..sealed qualification - for HOYS once again...

0:05:13 > 0:05:15- ..and she's still only eleven.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- When did you start riding?

0:05:17 > 0:05:22- I started riding - when I was three years old.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- I've been doing it...

0:05:27 > 0:05:29- ..almost every day ever since!

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- What was so special about horses?

0:05:33 > 0:05:39- Well, I ride - four or five days every week.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44- I do a lot of things...

0:05:45 > 0:05:47- ..like hacking...

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- ..a bit of dressage and showing.

0:05:53 > 0:05:59- I also like galloping - along the beach.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04- Do you see Libby as - an excellent jockey for the future?

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- Oh, yes, she's a potential - little superstar, she is.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12- She's a very good jockey.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15- She's also got great charisma.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- When you're in the show ring, - it's a bit like being on stage.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- She does rise to the occasion.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26- It's no good going in there - and being nervous, as you know.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30- Once she gets in there, - she loves it, and she loves to win.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34- Debbie has taught - a lot of famous people.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37- What do you hope to do - in the future?

0:06:37 > 0:06:41- I want to do dressage...

0:06:41 > 0:06:45- ..and go to the Olympics, - like Charlotte Dujardin.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48- Well, you've got the right teacher.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50- Yes.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53- Same thing on this rein, Libby, - nice and straight.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57- Libby's preparing - for the Horse Of The Year Show.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00- Do you think she's talented?

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- Without a shadow of a doubt.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08- For her age, she's way ahead - of any other child.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- She's a little girl - who doesn't lose very often.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14- She wins more than she loses.

0:07:15 > 0:07:16- She has determination.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20- Of all the children - we've had down the years...

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- ..she's as good as any of them.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- She has terrific determination.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30- How does Libby deal - with the pressure of competing?

0:07:30 > 0:07:32- As long as she wins, she's fine!

0:07:36 > 0:07:39- You've had a lot - of very successful riders.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41- How does Libby compare with them?

0:07:42 > 0:07:45- She's as good, if not better, - than any of them.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49- We're talking - about Charlotte Dujardin...

0:07:49 > 0:07:53- ..who was here and who has won - at the highest level.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56- She had an exceptional will to win.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58- Libby is exceptional.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00- All they need then...

0:08:00 > 0:08:05- ..is the break when they move on - from ponies to horses.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07- A lot of people find...

0:08:08 > 0:08:12- ..that they don't want - to go down the road of dressage.

0:08:12 > 0:08:17- But if Libby does it, - she will be a winner.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- Enjoying success at major shows - is one thing...

0:08:23 > 0:08:28- ..but it takes a lot of hard work - to get within reach of the prizes.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- The first step is to buy a horse.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33- Let's discuss buying horses.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- You hear that a horse is available.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38- What happens next?

0:08:39 > 0:08:40- Well, I always say this.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43- It's like looking - at a beautiful woman.

0:08:44 > 0:08:49- A good horse shows itself off - when you go into the field.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- I don't want to see the horse - in the stable.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- I want to see it trotting - and cantering in the field.

0:08:56 > 0:09:02- If it's a good horse, - I'll pick it up.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- I'll see the things that matter.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08- The signs that it will turn out - to be a good horse.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- I want a horse with presence.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15- If it has it, more often than not, - it'll do the job.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19- Can you spot a horse with potential - immediately?

0:09:19 > 0:09:21- The superstars are obvious.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23- Give me a week at home...

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- ..and I'll know if they're - top notches or just ordinary horses.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- What do you look for in a horse?

0:09:30 > 0:09:33- Well, it must have four good legs.

0:09:33 > 0:09:39- We have bought several horses - where the legs turn a bit...

0:09:39 > 0:09:42- ..or they have lumps - on their legs...

0:09:43 > 0:09:46- ..or they have splints - or something on their hocks.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51- But most of the time, - I know that I can sort that out.

0:09:51 > 0:09:56- I can then buy a horse that's not - as expensive as it should be...

0:09:56 > 0:10:01- ..because people don't know - how to get rid of minor problems.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- Ron has several horses - in training at the moment...

0:10:08 > 0:10:10- ..each with its own unique needs.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- Small-land Playalong, - fresh from the field...

0:10:15 > 0:10:18- ..is about to start the journey - to the show.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21- What is remarkable - about this filly, Ron?

0:10:22 > 0:10:27- When you saw her in the stable, - she didn't look impressive at all.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- But when she comes out, - you can see her legs working.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33- She's athletic.

0:10:33 > 0:10:38- If you see her under saddle in three - months, you won't recognize her.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41- You won't think - it's the same pony you first saw.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45- Will she stand out in the ring - when she competes?

0:10:45 > 0:10:47- She's different.

0:10:47 > 0:10:52- They're all browns and bay browns, - but this one's a grey.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54- She's a different colour.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57- I think she'll be - a good little pony.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03- There's another new horse - currently in training too.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- A brown partbred.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10- Teach me what needs improving - on this horse.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- There isn't a lot to improve...

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- ..but if you want to be fussy...

0:11:16 > 0:11:18- ..she's being shown in-hand.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22- Her back, from the shoulder down, - is a bit low.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26- I want these muscles - up about here...

0:11:26 > 0:11:27- ..right along to there.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- The way we do that - is to work her fitted with a bit...

0:11:32 > 0:11:36- ..and encourage her to work - with her head down there.

0:11:36 > 0:11:42- When her head's down, these muscles - will work their way up.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45- That will give you - a good second thigh muscle.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49- And only specialist training - can make that difference?

0:11:49 > 0:11:53- Yes, because most people would keep - riding her with her head up.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- The more her head's up, - the more her back will sag.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00- At a show, when you get marks - for the conformation...

0:12:01 > 0:12:02- ..she'd be marked down.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- A higher back - will produce higher marks.

0:12:10 > 0:12:15- Do you get more pleasure - from improving the tougher horses?

0:12:15 > 0:12:17- Yes, but you know how it is.

0:12:18 > 0:12:23- Sometimes, when improving a horse - has been hard work...

0:12:23 > 0:12:27- ..you get more satisfaction - out of the job, ultimately.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36- You start off - thinking every one will work out.

0:12:36 > 0:12:42- But as the year goes on, - a lot of them fall by the wayside.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- They're not quite what you want.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53- Obviously, - the longer you spend on them...

0:12:53 > 0:12:57- ..the more pleasure you get - if it works out ultimately.

0:13:05 > 0:13:06- .

0:13:08 > 0:13:08- Subtitles

0:13:08 > 0:13:10- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:13:18 > 0:13:22- I'm back on the farm - with Ron and Debbie Thomas.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24- The training continues.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28- Of the horses we saw last time, - why didn't some work out?

0:13:28 > 0:13:33- You know, a horse is like a person.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- They have a heart.

0:13:36 > 0:13:41- If their heart isn't in it, - whatever you do, you won't succeed.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- The heart makes you smile.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47- If they won't smile, ultimately...

0:13:48 > 0:13:50- ..whatever you try, - it won't work out.

0:13:51 > 0:13:52- Is it disappointing...

0:13:52 > 0:13:56- ..when a horse fails to achieve - the potential you saw in it?

0:13:57 > 0:13:58- It's doubly disappointing...

0:13:59 > 0:14:02- ..in that respect - and because it hits my pocket!

0:14:02 > 0:14:04- There's a good boy.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09- Over the weeks, - the work is steady and detailed.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- They sometimes call on - trainer Barry Thomas's expertise...

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- ..to break in the horses.

0:14:17 > 0:14:22- As well as the physical work, - the diet plays a key role too.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26- There was a time - when people used to say...

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- ..that 70% of the success - came from the manger.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33- Years ago, for a short while, - I was a policeman.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37- I went to a place in Johnstown - where an old chap reared Herefords.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40- His name was Shadrach.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41- He's probably dead now.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45- We were looking at the cattle...

0:14:45 > 0:14:50- ..and I asked him - how he got them into condition.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54- He told me that if you want - an animal with a big body...

0:14:54 > 0:14:55- ..you give it a lot of hay.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58- Lots of hay - makes it drink lots of water.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00- Water keeps its kidneys clean...

0:15:01 > 0:15:04- ..and gives a healthy animal - with tremendous depth.

0:15:04 > 0:15:10- If you want more muscle, - use solid feed instead of hay.

0:15:10 > 0:15:16- I've stayed two or three steps - ahead of a lot of people...

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- ..because of what he told me - that evening.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23- One horse we saw last time, - Small-land Playalong...

0:15:24 > 0:15:28- ..has certainly benefited - from the diet and training.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33- You saw a lot of potential - in this horse last time.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35- Do you still see it?

0:15:35 > 0:15:40- I do now, but at one time, - I wasn't sure she'd come through.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44- But she came again, - and I think she'll be very nice.

0:15:44 > 0:15:49- Once they start working with - the horse, what do you look for?

0:15:49 > 0:15:50- You want a wet mouth.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54- If the horse - is right in the brain...

0:15:54 > 0:15:57- ..it'll mouth nicely, as we say.

0:15:58 > 0:15:59- It's as if it slobbers.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- A white froth - comes out of the mouth.

0:16:03 > 0:16:04- That's a good sign.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- If the mouth's right, - the brain's right.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12- If the mouth isn't right, you're - hitting your head against a wall.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14- What's the next stage for the grey?

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- The grey has got everything.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20- We need to mature it now.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22- To get the body right and so on.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25- To carry on - as well as she is doing.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27- I believe now...

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- To be honest, - she has surprised us.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33- She has come on - better than we thought.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37- How much time does she need - before she competes?

0:16:37 > 0:16:42- As a four-year-old, - we won't take her to every show.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44- She'll have a couple of shows...
