0:01:42 > 0:01:45- ..are members of sports clubs.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48- It's no wonder that several - have gone on to become champions.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52- I'm delighted - to have won this award.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57- I just can't wait to bring back the - medals from the world championships.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01- That was the skier, - Menna Fitzpatrick.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04- Many sports - are represented here tonight.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10- ..to wheelchair basketball.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13- Debbie Bashford - is a coach for the latter.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40- Aled Sion Davies is an athlete - who has reached the highest level.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48- ..for shotput and discus - in the Paralympic Games...

0:03:00 > 0:03:05- ..he wanted to talk about the help - he had from Disability Sport Wales.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19- I go to Games in London or Rio - or the World Championships...

0:03:20 > 0:03:25- I want to make sure that - when I'm too old to do this...

0:03:29 > 0:03:33- We need to ensure that we keep - bringing medals back to Wales.

0:05:47 > 0:05:53- I work for the Foundation, - the club's charity.

0:05:54 > 0:06:00- We go out to the community - and play football.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- We try to get more people - involved in football.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05- Make them fitter and healthier.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- We try to improve their lives.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11- That includes running three teams - in the Cardiff area...

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- I used to play quite regularly - on a Sunday night with chapel.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25- I'm married now, - so I don't do as much sport!

0:06:25 > 0:06:28- But I need to start, I think.

0:06:31 > 0:06:37- I know that 700 children and adults - have been here today.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39- They've had a go at everything.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44- Hopefully, they've been inspired - to join a club...

0:06:49 > 0:06:54- Hopefully this event has been - a big inspiration for people...

0:07:40 > 0:07:44- ..in the British Open Wheelchair - Tennis Championships.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48- She's training for her next big - competition with her friend, Emily.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14- I played running tennis - for 14 years.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18- Then my disability got worse.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21- So I then had to play - in a wheelchair.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- Fran was a completely healthy child.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- She enjoyed taking part - in all types of sport.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35- I tried everything - gymnastics, - tennis, football. Everything.

0:08:36 > 0:08:37- And swimming.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- I stuck with tennis and swimming...

0:08:40 > 0:08:42- ..and did those - when I was growing up.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- But then, life changed.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50- In her early teens, she found out - she had Elhers-Danlos Syndrome.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53- It's a genetic disease...

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- ..which predominantly affects - the arms and legs.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59- This means that Fran has to - sometimes use a wheelchair.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05- My knees would hurt, then my legs.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08- I would fall over - while playing tennis.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- When I swam, everything hurt.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14- It felt as though everything - was being pulled out of place.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17- Especially with breaststroke. - That was very difficult.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21- I stopped doing everything - all at once.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- The most difficult thing - is when you develop a disability.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- It's different to being born - with a disability.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- You feel different - and you don't feel like yourself.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37- I also have - chronic fatigue syndrome.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- It affects my energy levels - all the time.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43- It can be hard to get out of bed.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46- I was just sad all the time - because I didn't know what to do.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49- I wasn't doing anything - with my life. It was hard.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53- But this year, my health - hasn't worsened or improved.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55- I've been quite lucky this year.

0:09:56 > 0:10:01- Now I feel that I'm more in control. - I can do more with my life.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04- That's why I've gone back to sport. - I know what's good for me.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07- I'm just going to play tennis.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12- It helps with my mental health too, - not just my physical health.

0:10:17 > 0:10:22- Fran isn't the only member of her - family to deal with disability.

0:10:23 > 0:10:29- You knew exactly what positions you - had to be in which was really good.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33- Debbie, Fran's mother, - has transverse myelitis...

0:10:33 > 0:10:36- ..a disease that affects the spine.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40- As a result, she has lost one - of her legs and, unlike Fran...

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- ..uses a wheelchair all the time.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46- Because I have a disabled mother...

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- ..I often don't see - people's disabilities.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54- When we go to Tesco or something, - people will look at her leg.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56- I don't see it - because I've grown up with it.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01- It's easy for me. If someone has - a disability, it doesn't worry me.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02- They're just a person.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09- Debbie and Fran - also give a lot of their time...

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- ..to volunteer with disabled people.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15- Fran won the award for Young - Volunteer of the Year...

0:11:16 > 0:11:18- ..by the Lord's Taverners.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21- As we saw earlier, - Debbie was recognized...

0:11:22 > 0:11:24- ..at the Disability Sport Wales - awards night...

0:11:25 > 0:11:27- ..for her work - as a wheelchair basketball coach.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33- But Fran isn't thinking - about volunteering at the moment.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- The weekend of the School Games - is coming up.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40- What kind of competitions - will you be doing?

0:11:40 > 0:11:42- I will be doing singles and doubles.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46- I'm lucky enough to have a partner - who is also from Wales.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50- I want the gold medal in the singles - and we want a medal in the doubles.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54- A gold one would be nice! - But we're just aiming for a medal.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27- Now, there are about 1.4 million.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31- We have more athletes - competing on an international level.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- We have more medals - coming back to Wales.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- The main change is people's - attitude towards disabled people.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43- Not just those taking part in sport, - but disabled people in general.

0:16:44 > 0:16:49- The 2012 Paralympic Games - contributed to that.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- The GB team was very successful.
