0:08:59 > 0:09:02- For some, Welshness itself - was being threatened.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- Some of the tavern's ardent users - acknowledged that.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10- # I am not an abstainer

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- # Several old Christians

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- # Walking in the ditch

0:09:46 > 0:09:51- # To make room for the Teddy Boys' - fathers to pass

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- # If they come here - for their health

0:09:58 > 0:10:02- # To the hills of gentle Wales

0:10:03 > 0:10:09- # It's not in a bottle or a pint - you will see a country's beauty. #

0:10:11 > 0:10:14- The leader of the campaign - for Sunday opening...

0:10:40 > 0:10:44- ..three other areas joined them, - including Dinefwr.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48- But not everyone welcomed - the decision.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- It seems the vote in Dinefwr - has been as much of a shock...

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- ..to Ammanford's landlords - as it was to everyone else.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58- Before, if you wanted a pint - on a Sunday...

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- ..you had 18 clubs to choose from - within a mile of the town square.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07- There you had cheap beer, bingo - and an act to listen to.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10- But now the pubs are also open.

0:11:10 > 0:11:15- Several landlords in Ammanford - aren't happy about that...

0:11:15 > 0:11:19- ..such as Mr and Mrs Emrys Jones - who run The Telegraph Hotel...

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- Are you surprised the vote in - Dinefwr went the way it did?

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Yes, I was very disappointed, - as was Emrys.

0:11:44 > 0:11:49- I've noticed you only have a few - customers here on a Sunday.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- Only three or four. - Has that surprised you?

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- Yes, I was disappointed - last Sunday.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- You expected more?

0:11:57 > 0:11:58- Yes.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- But I didn't expect more to come - on Sunday night...

0:12:02 > 0:12:06- ..because most of the boys, - I call them boys...

0:12:09 > 0:12:11- There's entertainment there.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- The Pick and Shovel's car park - was full...

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- ..and 200 people were inside - playing bingo.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25- It was the same in the town's other - 17 clubs while the pubs are quiet.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29- During the '70s, - a new threat appeared...

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- ..to challenge the - old Welsh way of life.

0:12:32 > 0:12:37- A more shocking moral challenge - than drinking on a Sunday.

0:12:37 > 0:12:37- .

0:12:43 > 0:12:43- Subtitles

0:12:43 > 0:12:45- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:12:48 > 0:12:53- By the '70s the social changes - that started a decade earlier...

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- ..seeped into every area of Wales.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- Moral conventions were challenged - by a new generation...

0:13:01 > 0:13:04- ..that yearned for a more - open attitude towards...

0:13:04 > 0:13:06- ..pleasures of the flesh.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11- But enough was enough for - Aberystwyth Town Council.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- In 1972, they banned the town's - cinemas from showing the film...

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- ..Last Tango in Paris - because of its raw portrayal...

0:13:20 > 0:13:21- ..of a sexual relationship.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- If you have an interest - in X Rated films...

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- ..don't let members of Aberystwyth - Town Council find out.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35- As well as refusing to allow - one film to be shown here...

0:13:35 > 0:13:39- ..they have also asked the - Festival of Light for advice...

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- ..about what they should do - in future.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45- Mary Whitehouse herself has said - it's wonderful to see...

0:13:45 > 0:13:48- ..such an enlightened example - coming from Wales.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- So in Aberystwyth you have to be - vigilant, to say the least.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58- It's a huge disappointment.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- It's obvious that the council - and the Festival of Light think...

0:14:02 > 0:14:05- ..people here can't think - for themselves.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09- The council can now tell us what - to watch and what not to watch.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- We need to think for ourselves more - and that will help people here.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17- Would you go and watch an X Rated - film in Aberystwyth?

0:14:17 > 0:14:20- No, not because they're X Rated - in themselves.

0:14:20 > 0:14:25- I've got better things to do - than watch such films.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27- What kind of films do you watch?

0:14:27 > 0:14:31- Those which are known - as being well-made films.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34- I don't believe in spending - three hours...

0:14:34 > 0:14:37- ..watching something sordid - like Last Tango.

0:14:38 > 0:14:42- I support them in this case - because...

0:14:42 > 0:14:48- ..I feel there was no need for - this kind of film to be made.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52- It shows a deterioration...

0:14:52 > 0:14:55- ..of the man and the young woman.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59- Marlon Brando himself said, - and he was in the film...

0:15:00 > 0:15:02- ..he felt...

0:15:02 > 0:15:06- ..manipulated and never took part - in such a film again.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10- While Aberystwyth councillors - worried about...

0:15:44 > 0:15:47- I don't think families - are doing enough.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51- These young people don't think - their parents understand them...

0:15:51 > 0:15:56- ..and they don't understand - their parents and don't want to.

0:15:56 > 0:16:01- Do you know how many people in - Wales suffer from alcoholism?

0:16:01 > 0:16:05- Our estimate is one in a hundred.

0:16:05 > 0:16:10- This means 20,000 people - in Wales...

0:16:10 > 0:16:13- ..are having problems as a result - of alcohol.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17- Is it more of a problem among - young people than it's been?

0:16:17 > 0:16:20- We don't see that in this area.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24- The young people - have turned to drugs.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31- That's a bigger cause for concern - than alcohol.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37- Despite this, some young people - didn't seem too worried...

0:16:38 > 0:16:40- ..about the danger of drugs.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44- Even in rural Carmarthen, a - large crowd could be attracted...
