0:00:44 > 0:00:48- ..there are remarkable objects - in every corner of Wales.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51- I look forward to seeing them all.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53- Welcome to Caru Casglu.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56- For help to follow the programme...

0:00:56 > 0:01:00- ..use the website, - the app and the subtitles.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07- This week on Caru Casglu, - a penguin collection in Tregaron...

0:01:07 > 0:01:10- ..shoes in Cardiff...

0:01:10 > 0:01:16- ..but first, a collection - of Nativity mangers.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23- The story of the Nativity - is familiar to us all.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26- Here in Llandudno, - that story has developed...

0:01:26 > 0:01:29- ..into a passion - for Nia Higginbotham.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32- Her extensive collection - is well worth seeing.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44- Nia fell in love with her first - manger in Machynlleth, 25 years ago.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49- Since then, Nia, - a former social worker...

0:01:49 > 0:01:52- ..has collected over 200 of them.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56- She has different examples - from all over the world.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04- Why did you become interested - in collecting Nativity mangers?

0:02:04 > 0:02:09- I consider the Nativity - to be a remarkable story.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12- I love the story.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16- I can never get my head - around the fact...

0:02:17 > 0:02:20- ..that God appears as a baby.

0:02:20 > 0:02:26- For me, it's more remarkable - that Almighty God is a baby...

0:02:26 > 0:02:31- ..than Jesus on the cross - reverting to being God.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35- I view that as complete heresy.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38- That's why I'm so interested in it.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42- As you set about - collecting the mangers...

0:02:42 > 0:02:47- ..when did you realize - your collection had grown so much?

0:02:47 > 0:02:53- It was other people's reaction - that made me realize, I think.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57- People saying that I had - ever such a lot of them.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01- But I also realized, - whenever I went on holiday...

0:03:01 > 0:03:07- ..that I was looking for mangers - to bring back as a souvenir.

0:03:07 > 0:03:13- That's become a big part of it - over the years.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17- Every piece reminds me - either of somewhere I've been...

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- ..or of a holiday we've had.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30- Nia, we're surrounded by mangers - and they're a feast for the eyes.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33- They're colourful and so varied.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36- There are so many different ones.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41- In this room, there are examples - from over 26 countries.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44- This is just a part - of your collection.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46- Yes, about a quarter of it.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50- I've got some others - that go on the tree, smaller ones.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53- But they're all - on a Nativity theme.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57- Tell me about the first one, - which is over there.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- I got this one in Machynlleth.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04- It was made by a local man.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- They're candle snuffers, - which I like about them.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12- Each one is a candle snuffer.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14- So, that was the first one.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19- This one here - is a recycled Nativity scene.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23- Yes, recycled, - and this one came from Kenya.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27- They're made out of Coca-Cola cans.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31- This one here is striking.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34- What's the story behind this one?

0:04:34 > 0:04:35- What's the story behind this one?- - This was remarkable.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- I saw a similar one and ordered it.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43- But it didn't arrive.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47- The following Christmas, - my sister sent me a big parcel.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- At the time, - she had just moved to the USA.

0:04:51 > 0:04:56- This was in the parcel, - and she got it from the Philippines.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01- We both thought - that it was remarkable.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05- From the Philippines, and made of...

0:05:05 > 0:05:06- From the Philippines, and made of...- - Is it newspaper?

0:05:06 > 0:05:08- Yes, rolled-up newspaper.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24- Tell me a little - about that manger in the corner.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- That's from The Gambia.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30- A friend of ours went to The Gambia - about two years ago.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34- To my surprise, - she brought that back.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36- It was completely unexpected.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39- She searched for one - all over The Gambia.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42- She asked and asked - until someone said...

0:05:42 > 0:05:46- ..that their brother-in-law - would make one.

0:05:46 > 0:05:47- That was specially made.

0:05:47 > 0:05:48- That was specially made.- - Was it really?

0:05:48 > 0:05:52- And, of course, it portrays their - own interpretation of the Nativity.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56- A lot of these - represent specific countries.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- There's one over there - from Zimbabwe, I understand.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04- This one is from Zimbabwe, - yes, and specially carved.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08- There's something very dignified - about it, isn't there?

0:06:08 > 0:06:12- Some of them - are dignified and wonderful...

0:06:12 > 0:06:14- ..while others make you laugh.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19- That one there makes me laugh, - made out of pop bottle tops.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- That's from Uganda.

0:06:21 > 0:06:26- From a project to help people - living in poverty.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- It does make you smile, yes.

0:06:28 > 0:06:29- It does indeed.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32- It's unique, a work of art, almost.

0:06:33 > 0:06:38- They are art, hand-made, - not using machines at all.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42- They're important to a lot - of the people who make them...

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- ..as a means of making money - in very difficult situations.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- A way of life, - and a source of income.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53- A vital source of income.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55- A lot of them are Fairtrade.

0:06:56 > 0:07:02- Over here, there's a mix of - traditional and abstract examples.

0:07:02 > 0:07:07- Yes, some are very abstract, - and there are comic ones as well.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- Like this one, - Jesus Christ on top of a bus.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15- Out of the whole collection, - do you have a particular favourite?

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- Well, my favourite is this one, - which comes from Bethlehem.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23- Cutting right through the scene...

0:07:23 > 0:07:27- ..is the dividing security wall.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31- The barrier separating Israel - and the West Bank.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35- Personally, I think that we tend - to romanticize the Nativity.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37- We make it a cosy tale.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- But it all happened at a time...

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- ..when a very cruel empire ruled.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- That's why Mary and Joseph - were there, actually.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52- I went to Palestine a few years ago.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- They told me that if it was today...

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- ..Mary and Joseph - would never have got there...

0:07:59 > 0:08:04- ..because the West Bank - isn't accessible from Nazareth...

0:08:04 > 0:08:10- ..and that it takes hard work - for us to be fellow men.

0:08:10 > 0:08:11- Hear! hear!

0:08:23 > 0:08:27- One of my daughters-in-law - comes from Liverpool.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31- Liverpudlians are fairly straight!

0:08:31 > 0:08:33- She made it perfectly clear...

0:08:33 > 0:08:36- ..that she didn't want - to inherit them!

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- She'd take one but no more.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41- And which one would that be?

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- The one from Russia..

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- ..based on the idea - of the Russian doll.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52- Five figures inside each other.

0:08:52 > 0:08:58- To have one of those - on a Nativity theme is unusual.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- But that's the only one - she's interested in.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05- What pleasure do you get - out of the collection?

0:09:05 > 0:09:09- You open the house - to the public every Christmas...

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- ..to raise money for charity.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Is that the greatest pleasure - they give you?

0:09:15 > 0:09:17- I get pleasure from sharing them.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- But just opening them - gives me pleasure as well...

0:09:21 > 0:09:25- ..and thinking about what they mean - and about the people who made them.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28- I marvel at the materials used.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31- All kinds of different materials.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- I also think about the countries...

0:09:34 > 0:09:38- ..and the artists - that created them all.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42- They give me pleasure - on several levels, to be honest.

0:09:48 > 0:09:48- .

0:09:54 > 0:09:54- Subtitles

0:09:54 > 0:09:56- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:10:02 > 0:10:05- Tregaron is famous - for many reasons...

0:10:05 > 0:10:10- ..but it's also home to hundreds - and hundreds of penguins...

0:10:10 > 0:10:14- ..who live happily here - with Dafydd Morgan.

0:10:25 > 0:10:26- Good morning, sir.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28- Good morning, sir.- - Welcome to Tregaron.

0:10:28 > 0:10:29- How are you, penguin?

0:10:30 > 0:10:31- Hot enough.

0:10:33 > 0:10:34- What a surprise!

0:10:42 > 0:10:46- Dafydd, I've knocked - on many doors in my time...

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- ..but no-one in a penguin suit - has ever answered.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- You really are - a sight for sore eyes.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54- It's a special suit...

0:10:55 > 0:10:57- ..for a special occasion.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01- When did you - actually start collecting?

0:11:01 > 0:11:04- Originally, it was my wife - who collected penguins.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- When I met Frances back in 1995...

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- ..I found the way to her heart.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17- I thought, the more penguins - I buy for Frances...

0:11:17 > 0:11:20- ..the closer I get to her heart...

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- ..thus improving my chances - of proposing to her.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27- So, after collecting - 1,500 penguins...

0:11:29 > 0:11:34- ..I popped the question - and she agreed to marry me.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36- That's the family's story.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41- In our home today, - we have all kinds of penguins.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Some are hiding, some are obvious...

0:11:44 > 0:11:48- ..and there's even one in the toilet - keeping an eye on you.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52- They're part of our lives.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57- Christmas and birthdays - are always very easy for me.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01- This selection proves to me...

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- ..that you don't - just collect figurines.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08- That's the most interesting aspect - of collecting penguins.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10- They come in many forms...

0:12:11 > 0:12:13- ..in many shapes and materials.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16- They can be big or small.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- They can be made of wood, - ceramic or glass materials.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25- Every type of material is important - to us as part of our collection.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30- This is from the South Pole, - from Antarctica.

0:12:31 > 0:12:36- A friend of mine, Ian Tillotson, - saw the bottle, the last in the pub.

0:12:37 > 0:12:42- He had to choose between - opening it and drinking it...

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- ..or bringing it back to Tregaron.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48- I haven't opened it, - and I doubt I ever will.

0:12:48 > 0:12:49- No, don't open it.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52- Don't you open it either.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54- Have you seen penguins in the flesh?

0:12:54 > 0:12:56- Have you seen penguins in the flesh?- - No, that's my ambition.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59- Before I'm 50, - and I'm very nearly 50...

0:13:00 > 0:13:04- ..I want to go to Patagonia, - to South America...

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- ..where you see penguins - on beaches and in pubs.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- Just like Tregaron then?

0:13:10 > 0:13:14- Some of them come fairly close - to you in their habitat...

0:13:14 > 0:13:17- ..and say, "Hello, mate!"

0:13:18 > 0:13:22- I think you've convinced me - about these penguins.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24- I've got 1,500 penguins here.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28- I could sell you one - without the wife missing it!

0:13:31 > 0:13:33- Let's have a walk round.

0:13:33 > 0:13:34- Let's have a walk round.- - Do you want to see more?

0:13:35 > 0:13:36- Here we are.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38- Here we are.- - You weren't lying either!

0:13:38 > 0:13:40- They are literally everywhere.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45- A place for everything, - and everything in its place.

0:13:45 > 0:13:51- Big ones at the back, small ones - in the front, like school photos.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54- You and your wife - clearly love penguins.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56- But what does your daughter think?

0:13:56 > 0:13:59- But what does your daughter think?- - Catrin likes the penguins as well.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03- She's spent hours with them, - and they're part of her life.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- One day, she'll inherit them all.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10- All 1,500 of them, maybe more.

0:14:10 > 0:14:11- Probably.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15- I heard that you got married - in a penguin tie.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21- They said I had to dress - like a penguin, but not like this.

0:14:21 > 0:14:26- Myself and the best man - did wear penguin ties.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- Certainly, penguins - played a part on the day.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32- There's a fine picture behind you.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35- What's the story behind it?

0:14:35 > 0:14:40- That's a memento of our wedding day - 21 years ago.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44- Within the outlines - of the penguins...

0:14:44 > 0:14:49- ..there's a map of Tregaron, - my home town...

0:14:49 > 0:14:55- ..and a map of Llanwnnen, where - Frances lived before we got married.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57- It matches the wall, doesn't it?!

0:15:00 > 0:15:03- The penguins - bind two areas together.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07- Do you have a favourite item - in this room, Dafydd?

0:15:07 > 0:15:12- Picking a favourite from the 1,500 - would be cruel to all the others.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16- But this penguin - is one of my favourites.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20- It's very unusual, - not a penguin's usual colouring.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23- I went skiing in Austria - a few years ago.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26- I found this in a shop - and I had to have it.

0:15:26 > 0:15:32- The problem was getting it home - without damaging it.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35- But I like him - because he has a big belly.

0:15:38 > 0:15:44- When you first come in, you don't - notice how many penguins there are.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49- Then you look around - and see them here and there.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52- Actually, they're everywhere!

0:15:52 > 0:15:54- Ifan, there are more upstairs.

0:15:56 > 0:15:57- Right, where are they?

0:15:58 > 0:16:02- They're fairly well-organized - here in this cabinet.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05- They're on several levels, - and in several colours.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09- Some them are very small.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11- Take this one. Don't swallow it.

0:16:12 > 0:16:13- Goodness me.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17- Imagine someone making - a penguin that size.

0:16:17 > 0:16:18- Well, well, well.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22- It's from a family of five, - all bigger than the last.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25- They needed a tiny one.

0:16:25 > 0:16:26- They needed a tiny one.- - Where do you get hold of them?

0:16:27 > 0:16:31- We travel around Wales, England, - Scotland and Ireland.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- We see them...

0:16:33 > 0:16:38- The problem is, our eyes - have a default penguin setting.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43- Any shop we walk into, - it's penguin, penguin, penguin.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46- You have a fine collection.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51- Some are more playful, - shall we say, at the bottom...

0:16:52 > 0:16:54- ..and more modern pieces at the top.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- They're more classical, - standard penguins.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59- Glass, crystal and so on.

0:17:00 > 0:17:05- I have to ask, what's the most you - or Frances have spent on a penguin?

0:17:05 > 0:17:10- We see more value in the collection - than in individual pieces, I think.

0:17:10 > 0:17:15- But paying over 100 - has happened in the past, for one.

0:17:15 > 0:17:20- We've seen one, - in Ceredigion, which is 300.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- So, you can buy me that one.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24- Next Christmas.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28- Dafydd, thanks very much.

0:17:28 > 0:17:29- Dafydd, thanks very much.- - Call again.
