0:02:02 > 0:02:06- I live in Ellesmere Port, just - across the border, near Chester.

0:02:08 > 0:02:13- The oil and chemical industry - is well established locally.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17- I used to work - for an oil company in the area.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20- The area is steeped in history.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22- There's a canal museum.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26- There's an old steelworks - in the town.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30- I decided to learn Welsh - less than eight years ago.

0:03:30 > 0:03:37- After a while, I was encouraged - by my tutors to take an interest...

0:03:42 > 0:03:47- It all grew from that - and that's where I am today.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53- I feel like I'm a different person.

0:03:53 > 0:03:58- I'm a lot more confident - since I've learnt Welsh.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02- I've had the same conversation - with other learners...

0:04:10 > 0:04:17- ..but I'm just more confident - coping with different situations.

0:04:23 > 0:04:28- I don't see many advertisements - for Welsh lessons in England!

0:04:29 > 0:04:35- Myself and my wife are members of - the Wrexham Welsh learners' choir.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50- We don't sing folk songs.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47- I have quite an unusual hobby. - I have a keen interest in trains.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28- He's the type of person - who started from a standing start.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34- He learnt Welsh - because he wanted to learn Welsh.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39- He has no network around him - - no family or children in school.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42- He's worked hard - to create his network.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46- He now has a large network - of friends...

0:06:46 > 0:06:49- ..both fluent speakers - and Welsh learners.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- He deserves a lot of respect - for that.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55- I'm Elwyn Roberts, - I was born locally.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00- I'm vice-president - of Cymdeithas Wil Bryan in Mold.

0:08:28 > 0:08:33- It's a good idea to do something - relating to the Welsh language...

0:12:09 > 0:12:14- I live in Deiniolen - - I've lived here for 11 years.

0:12:14 > 0:12:19- I work in Bangor University's - management centre.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- I like walking on the mountains.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28- That's why I like living near - the mountains. I have two children.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33- My two boys are called Deion - and Guto, they're seven and three.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39- I'm originally from Hertfordshire. - I was born in Cambridge.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- I was raised in Royston, - Hertfordshire.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- That's about 15 miles - from Cambridge.

0:12:49 > 0:12:54- I started learning Welsh - in Warrington in 2005.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58- I attended night classes.

0:12:59 > 0:13:04- The following year I moved down - and started an Wlpan course.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- I completed the Wlpan course...

0:13:07 > 0:13:11- ..and I've completed - a Welsh In The Workplace course...

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- ..and a Welsh Language Skills - At Work course.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25- I decided to learn Welsh - after meeting my partner.

0:13:25 > 0:13:30- Arwel is a fluent Welsh speaker - and a passionate Welshman.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37- I knew how important - the language was to him.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40- I decided to learn Welsh.

0:13:41 > 0:13:46- I'm also a little bit nosey - I like - to know what people are saying!

0:13:53 > 0:13:58- He's spoken Welsh to me all the time - since I started learning.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19- I wanted to help them - with their homework.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- I work in the management centre.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26- The management centre - is part of Bangor University.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30- I'm the Facilities, - HR and Compliance Officer.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32- It's a bit of a mouthful, I know!

0:14:34 > 0:14:38- I have many duties - in the management centre.

0:14:38 > 0:14:43- I make sure that all the staff - and buildings are OK.

0:14:43 > 0:14:48- If there are problems, - I'm the one that deals with them.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52- There are many opportunities - for me to speak Welsh.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56- I also work as a mentor - for some of the staff.

0:14:56 > 0:15:02- Some staff members are learning - Welsh and I help them a little...

0:15:02 > 0:15:04- ..with their Welsh.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09- There's a strong Welsh community - in Deiniolen.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12- A lot of people speak Welsh here.

0:15:13 > 0:15:20- Most of the children - in the village speak Welsh.

0:15:22 > 0:15:27- I'm very proud of the progress - Emma's made over the past few years.

0:15:27 > 0:15:32- She speaks Welsh naturally - with local people and visitors.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36- She plays an active role - with the nursery school...

0:15:36 > 0:15:38- ..and helps them raise funds.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43- Recently, she was fortunate enough - to secure a 5,000 grant...

0:15:44 > 0:15:46- ..to resurface the schoolyard.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50- She secured the grant and filled out - all the forms in Welsh.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53- The children attend Sunday School.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57- Every time special services - are held in the church...

0:15:57 > 0:15:59- ..Emma always participates.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- She's very supportive - of the village eisteddfod.

0:16:03 > 0:16:08- Deion and Guto enjoy competing - and have a lot of fun.

0:16:08 > 0:16:09- Emma coaches them.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13- Emma is a very determined person.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- She's knowledgeable and very clever.

0:16:16 > 0:16:21- To reach such a high standard - of Welsh so quickly...

0:16:21 > 0:16:25- ..I don't know of many people - from this village...

0:16:25 > 0:16:28- ..who've succeeded so quickly.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- It came easily to her. - To me, she's a Deiniolen girl.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37- Emma's working hard - to gain two qualifications...

0:16:37 > 0:16:39- ..the Welsh Language - Skills Certificate...

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- ..and Welsh In The Workplace.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45- The exams reach Level 6...

0:16:45 > 0:16:49- ..and they will open doors for her - in her professional career.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55- My advice to people - learning Welsh...

0:16:56 > 0:17:00- ..I'd say just go for it - and keep going.

0:17:00 > 0:17:07- Sometimes you feel - as if you're not progressing...

0:17:07 > 0:17:13- ..but sometimes things will click - and fall into place.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17- "Wow, yeah. I've learnt this - or I've said that.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20- "I didn't think I could do that."

0:17:20 > 0:17:23- Don't be scared - of talking to people.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27- It doesn't matter if you make - mistakes, I make them all the time.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32- It helps me, I hear myself saying - things and realise it's not right.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36- I say it again - and that's the secret.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38- Be confident and go for it.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42- With the - Learner of the Year title...

0:18:58 > 0:19:02- I'm Richard Furniss. - I live in Llangefni, on Anglesey.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06- I was born in Oswestry, Shropshire.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10- Mam and Dad moved - six weeks before I was born...

0:19:10 > 0:19:14- ..from Montgomeryshire to Shropshire - because of my father's work.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- I attended school in Shropshire...

0:19:18 > 0:19:22- ..and I didn't have the chance - to learn Welsh in school.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24- None of my family spoke Welsh.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33- I've lived on Anglesey - for the past 10 years.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36- I went to Bangor University in 2001.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38- I stayed in the area...

0:19:39 > 0:19:42- ..and studied for a second degree - in Bangor.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46- I met my wife, well, my girlfriend - at the time, Delyth, in 2007.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52- I've stayed here and worked - in the area for the past 10 years.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55- I started learning Welsh in 2005...

0:19:56 > 0:19:59- ..through the departments - in Bangor University.

0:20:06 > 0:20:12- I really enjoyed it and I continued - with the Wlpan course in 2005.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18- Llangefni can be a busy town.

0:20:18 > 0:20:22- A lot of events are organised here.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29- A lot of people are very active - in the area and that's good.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31- There's a strong sense - of community here.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36- Llangefni is a stronghold - of the Welsh language.

0:20:36 > 0:20:41- It's been a great help for me - to live here.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- A lot of people speak Welsh here - and it's fantastic.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50- For people wanting to change - the language of their household...

0:20:54 > 0:20:57- ..I'd advise them - to speak only Welsh...

0:20:57 > 0:20:59- ..for an hour every now and then.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01- Speak about what's on TV...

0:21:01 > 0:21:05- ..or speak Welsh while you're - sitting down to supper...

0:21:05 > 0:21:07- ..or when you're out for a meal.

0:21:07 > 0:21:12- Speak Welsh for an hour - and then progress to two hours.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17- Just do the little things, - carry on and try your best.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- People don't judge you - if you make a mistake.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23- The best part is giving it a go.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28- I've found that people support you - if you're learning Welsh.

0:21:32 > 0:21:37- ..because I wanted to help myself - find work in Wales.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44- They've supported me. It's important - to have Welsh speakers in this area.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52- The company has an accreditation - with Investors In People.

0:22:52 > 0:22:57- They've helped me with funding - to attend Welsh classes...

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- I find it easy to get on with him.

0:23:07 > 0:23:12- I have a lot of fun with him and we - support the same football club now!
