0:00:09 > 0:00:11Together, they make up the Eggheads,

0:00:11 > 0:00:17arguably the most formidable quiz team in the country.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19The question is, can they be beaten?

0:00:22 > 0:00:26Welcome to Eggheads, the show where a team of five quiz Challengers pit

0:00:26 > 0:00:29their wits against possibly the greatest quiz team in Britain.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31They are the Eggheads.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Hoping to beat the might of the Eggheads today are Shades Of The Night.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39This team are all part of Paralympics GB men's goalball squad,

0:00:39 > 0:00:44who play at the highest level of elite goalball in the European A League.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48- Let's meet them.- Hi, I'm Adam, and I'm a trainee music teacher.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Hi, I'm Caleb, and I'm a massage therapist.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Hello, I'm Dan, and I'm a sports therapist.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Hi, I'm Matthew, and I'm a professional athlete.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Hi, I'm Chris, and I'm a strength and conditioning coach.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- So, Adam and team, welcome.- Hello. - Good to see you.

0:01:03 > 0:01:04Thanks for coming in.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Adam, tell us about goalball, what kind of sport it is.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10So, goalball is a Paralympic sport for blind and visually impaired

0:01:10 > 0:01:16players. And the aim of the game is to throw a ball weighing 1.25 kilos, with bells inside,

0:01:16 > 0:01:19to try and score in the other team's goal.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21But everyone is blindfolded, so everyone is even.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23So hence the team name, Shades Of The Night.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26- You all have your eyes covered? - We thought we'd try and be a bit clever with that.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28So, yeah, hence the name.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31What's the competition level like in the European A League?

0:01:31 > 0:01:34So we've just been promoted from the B to the A League,

0:01:34 > 0:01:38so the A League has lots of the world's best teams in it -

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Lithuania, Finland, Turkey.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43We've got the A League championships next September,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45where we will be playing those

0:01:45 > 0:01:48likes of teams, and Paralympic champions, Paralympic runners-up,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50world champions. It's a tough league.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54I think we had the female goalballers in a while back.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Any Eggheads here for that, remember that?

0:01:56 > 0:02:00- We did, yeah.- So we had a great introduction to the sport then.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02And all got quite excited about it.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05I know, Adam, you were in London 2012, were you?

0:02:05 > 0:02:07- How was that?- Amazing experience.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Goalball has ballooned from then,

0:02:10 > 0:02:13it's gone from quite a small sport to a much bigger sport in the country,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16and we normally play in front of teams of, audiences of about five,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20ten people, so we were in front of 7,500 people.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22It was amazing.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Brilliant. Well, good luck, team,

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Every day there is £1,000 of cash up for grabs for our Challengers.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30However, if they fail to defeat the Eggheads,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33the prize money rolls over to our next show.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37So, Shades Of The Night, the Eggheads are on absolutely storming form,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39they've won the last 20 games.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Very nice.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Exactly. I think it's good. It cuts both ways,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46you don't want to meet them in this form - on the other hand,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49the jackpot is very high. £21,000 if you win.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51- Do you want to crack on?- Let's go for it.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53OK, let's get the ball into play,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56the first head-to-head battle is on the subject of Geography.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59You can choose either Judith, Beth, Kevin, Pat or Steve.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01- What are we thinking?- Caleb was...

0:03:01 > 0:03:03I'm geography.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- Caleb geography?- OK. - Who are you going for?

0:03:06 > 0:03:09- What do you guys reckon? - I'm not sure.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11- Shall we go Beth?- Yeah?

0:03:11 > 0:03:12Beth.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16OK, so we're going to have Caleb going up against Beth, please.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Very good. So it's going to be Caleb from Shades Of The Night

0:03:19 > 0:03:21playing Beth on Geography.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Got a bit of Southeast Asia, maybe.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- Yeah.- It's been an area of difficulty, shall we say,

0:03:26 > 0:03:27but maybe it's cleared up by now.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Let's find out. Please,

0:03:29 > 0:03:33both of you take your positions in our legendary Question Room.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Caleb, you're up against Beth.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Beth, you've been struggling with your Southeast Asia on Geography

0:03:37 > 0:03:39but I gather you've got it worked out?

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Yeah, I went to the doctor's, he's given me some cream for it and

0:03:42 > 0:03:43- it's starting to clear up.- OK.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46That's really encouraging.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Caleb, would you like to go first or second on Geography?

0:03:48 > 0:03:49Can I go first, please?

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Good luck. Here is your question.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00What is the technical name for a line of longitude?

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Caleb, is this...

0:04:06 > 0:04:08I don't think it's hemisphere.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I think I'm going to go for meridian, please.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Meridian is quite right, well done.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17OK, Beth, over to you.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21What does the M stand for in the American time zone MST?

0:04:25 > 0:04:27I think that's Mountain Standard Time.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30It is indeed, Mountain Standard Time.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33So back with you, Caleb, our Challenger.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37In which country is there a city called Durango,

0:04:37 > 0:04:41which is the capital of a state with the same name?

0:04:47 > 0:04:49I don't think it's Spain.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53So it would be Mexico or Philippines.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58I'd like to go for Philippines, please.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Let's see if our Eggheads know this.

0:05:00 > 0:05:01- Eggs?- Mexico.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03It is Mexico,

0:05:03 > 0:05:04actually, Caleb.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Beth, you have a chance to take the lead.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Ownership of the Frisian Islands is divided between Denmark,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Germany and which other country?

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Frisian just makes me think of Fresian cows.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26It's likely to be in the same environs

0:05:26 > 0:05:28as the other two countries.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Denmark and Germany, did you say?

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Denmark and Germany are the other two.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36I think they may share

0:05:36 > 0:05:38sovereignty with the Netherlands.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Ownership of the Frisian Islands is divided between Denmark,

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Germany and the Netherlands, you're right, Beth.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49So she's taken the lead, Caleb.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52- Yeah.- You need to get this one right to stay in.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56The Canadian province of Manitoba is bordered by Ontario to the east and

0:05:56 > 0:05:58which other province to the west?

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Not too sure about this but I think

0:06:06 > 0:06:08I'm going to go for British Columbia.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11British Columbia is your answer.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Any of your team-mates know here?

0:06:13 > 0:06:16- Any ideas?- I'd have guessed Alberta. - I'd probably have guessed the same.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20- I think it's Saskatchewan. - You think it's Saskatchewan?

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Caleb, it's not British Columbia, I'm afraid,

0:06:23 > 0:06:25it is Saskatchewan.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27But a lot of different opinions among your team-mates,

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- if it's any consolation.- Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Beth, you've taken the round on Geography.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34So you'll be in the final. Caleb, sorry, you were beaten by our Egghead.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38Please, both of you, return, rejoin your teams, and we'll play on.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41OK, as it stands, Shades Of The Night have lost a brain

0:06:41 > 0:06:44from the final round. No need to panic yet, guys.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47The Eggheads are still sitting there with all five brains.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Second-round subject for you is Music.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- Music.- This is the debate over here.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58- You know my thoughts.- I genuinely think Chris might be better for this.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Of the questions that might come up.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04- Your decision.- Just cos of the questions that might come up.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06The type of music.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08You know a lot of bands. OK, so who to take?

0:07:08 > 0:07:10So you're the trainee music...

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Yeah, I know, but whenever I'm in the gym with Chris, he goes,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- "What music is this?" And I'm like, "I have no idea."- OK.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20- So I think Chris might just know... - He's the pop master.- Yeah.

0:07:20 > 0:07:21So if that comes up...

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- I hope so.- All right, so...

0:07:23 > 0:07:24We're going to take Chris.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26OK, Chris on your side...

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Who are we going to go against?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30- That's a good point.- Anyone but Beth.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32I'm going to play Steve.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Chris from Shades Of The Night taking on

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Steve "The Man With 10,000 Books" Cook,

0:07:37 > 0:07:41from the Eggheads. To ensure there's no conferring,

0:07:41 > 0:07:44please take your leave of us and go to the Question Room.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Chris, you're the strength coach for the team.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49I am indeed, yeah.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52- So you do the training and all the fieldwork?- I do, yeah.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53I get them through their paces.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56It must be pretty tiring.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58It is very tiring for them, not for me.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00You just run around with a whistle, do you?

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Not quite like that, but I do try to motivate them a little bit,

0:08:03 > 0:08:05when we do testing, yeah.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07You accent is sounding a bit German, is that right?

0:08:07 > 0:08:10That's correct. I'm actually originally from Germany

0:08:10 > 0:08:13but I've lived in the UK longer than I've lived in Germany now.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Right, so you came over in your 20s or your teens?

0:08:15 > 0:08:17In my 20s, yeah.

0:08:17 > 0:08:18- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22- Good stuff.- Living now with a wife and four children, so it's been fantastic.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25And is there music in the house, that's the key thing?

0:08:25 > 0:08:27There's always music in the house.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29We are a very big musical family.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31And you play the guitar yourself?

0:08:31 > 0:08:35- I do indeed, yeah.- So, Music, Chris, would you like to go first or second?

0:08:35 > 0:08:36I'd like to go first, please.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42OK, here is your question.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46The stage musical A Chorus Line is set in which US state?

0:08:51 > 0:08:55That is a difficult one. I don't know the answer, but

0:08:55 > 0:08:57I think...

0:08:58 > 0:09:00..I'm going to go for New York.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Yeah, that's where all the theatres are, a lot of them, I suppose.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04New York is right.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08OK, Steve, your question.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12Which of these is the title of an album by Stevie Wonder?

0:09:18 > 0:09:20I don't actually know this.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23I know What's Going On is Marvin Gaye.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26That's The Way Love Is, I'm not really sure, but I do know that

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Signed, Sealed & Delivered is a Stevie Wonder song.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31So I'll have to assume that it's an album and say,

0:09:31 > 0:09:32Signed, Sealed & Delivered.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Signed, Sealed & Delivered is right.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Back to you, Challenger.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41Which of these songs was a UK number-one hit single for the band

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Little Mix in 2016?

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I'm going to go for Still Falling For You.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54Steve, do you know this?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Well, Still Falling For You was Ellie Goulding,

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Side To Side, I think, is Ariana Grande, so it's Shout Out To My Ex.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03It is Shout Out To My Ex, Chris.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Let's hope that's not expensive for you and your team.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10Steve, which British musician, in a long solo career,

0:10:10 > 0:10:14has had UK top-40 hits with Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,

0:10:14 > 0:10:18Knocking On Heaven's Door and Behind The Mask?

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Eric Clapton, Jeremy.

0:10:24 > 0:10:25Yes, it is Eric Clapton.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28You're being very business-like today, Steve.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Straight off the top of your head with the answers.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Chris, it means you need to get this one.

0:10:32 > 0:10:38- Yeah.- Which duo had the UK number one in 1992 with the EP Abba-esque?

0:10:42 > 0:10:441992 duo...

0:10:46 > 0:10:49I'm going to go for Pet Shop Boys.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54Now they are similar eras, similar sound, maybe,

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- it's not Pet Shop Boys. But I can see how you would be misled.- Ah!

0:10:57 > 0:10:59It was Erasure.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Sorry, Chris. Knocked out by our Egghead.

0:11:03 > 0:11:04And Steve will be in the final.

0:11:04 > 0:11:09Please return to us and we'll see what round three brings.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Looking a bit tricky at the moment for Shades Of The Night.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14It's been a hard couple of rounds, hasn't it, Adam?

0:11:14 > 0:11:17Yeah, not easy. But we'll keep going, see what happens.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Yep, do, and at this stage normally in a tournament,

0:11:20 > 0:11:23would you switch formation?

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Well, we play always with three players.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27And switching formation probably isn't easy,

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- but we might have a think about who plays where.- Yeah, OK.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34So you've lost two, the Eggheads are all still sitting there.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Let's see if we can change that. History is the round.

0:11:37 > 0:11:38History. Who wants this?

0:11:38 > 0:11:41- No-one wanted History, did they? - One of Dan's subjects, wasn't it?

0:11:41 > 0:11:44I think that'll probably have to be me, then, won't it?

0:11:44 > 0:11:45Dan, are you going to go for it?

0:11:45 > 0:11:47- I'll take one for the team. - You know some wacky facts.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- That's the best thing, isn't it? - Who's it going to be - Dan?

0:11:50 > 0:11:52It's going to be Dan. Who would you like?

0:11:52 > 0:11:54Dan, you can have Pat or Kevin or Judith.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57I'm feeling Judith, maybe.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01Let's see. So Dan from Shades Of The Night is feeling Judith

0:12:01 > 0:12:04from the Eggheads. Please, if you can go to our Question Room,

0:12:04 > 0:12:05and we'll play History.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Dan, I was looking at your kind of CV,

0:12:10 > 0:12:12and I see there's quite a bit of skydiving in there?

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Yeah, definitely. One of the most exciting things I think I've done,

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- probably, yes.- I was trying to work out how that's going to help with

0:12:18 > 0:12:20the History round but let's not worry about that at the moment.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23The key thing is, tell us about it.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Tell us why you did it and what it was like.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28I did it for a charity, for a blind charity.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31And just to raise awareness of the charity as well.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35It was good fun. Jumped out, there was 45 seconds of freefall.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39And the chute goes quite quickly, though, but it's good fun.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41- Definitely good fun.- Good luck, Dan.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42Would you like to go first or second?

0:12:42 > 0:12:44I was going to go first but I think I'll go second,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47because first hasn't been working. So I'll go second.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Judith, your question. Who was King of England at the time of the

0:12:53 > 0:12:56great famine of 1315?

0:13:02 > 0:13:04- 1315?- 1315.

0:13:04 > 0:13:09Definitely not George IV, not Henry VIII, Edward II.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Edward II is quite right, well done.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16Dan, over to you. Which of the following was best known for

0:13:16 > 0:13:18inventing a machine gun?

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Nothing's really jumping out at me.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27Can you repeat the names please?

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Which of the following was best known for inventing a machine gun?

0:13:35 > 0:13:36I'm clutching at straws, really,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39but I'm going to go for the third answer you gave,

0:13:39 > 0:13:41with Maxim as a surname.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Hiram Maxim.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47Hiram Maxim is the right answer, well done.

0:13:47 > 0:13:48Judith, your question.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51In an 1862 peace treaty,

0:13:51 > 0:13:56Vietnam ceded much of its territory to which country?

0:14:01 > 0:14:021862?

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Yes.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Well, it certainly became very French at some point.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11Because the Battle of Dien Bien Phu

0:14:11 > 0:14:13is when the French sort of lost it.

0:14:13 > 0:14:18I think that's perhaps when it ceded a lot of its territory to France.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21France is correct.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23Dan, we return to you.

0:14:23 > 0:14:27The coronation of King George V took place in which year?

0:14:31 > 0:14:35OK, so I was thinking very early 1900s when it first came out,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38so 1907 is jumping out at me.

0:14:38 > 0:14:401911 and 1915...

0:14:43 > 0:14:45No, I'm going to say 1907.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47I'm afraid you are four years out.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49It's 1911. It's the middle one.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54Judith has a chance to take the round with this question.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57Anne Boleyn grew up in which castle in Kent?

0:15:03 > 0:15:04Oh, I think I know Leeds Castle

0:15:04 > 0:15:07because we used to live quite near there.

0:15:08 > 0:15:09I think it's Hever.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13The correct answer is Hever Castle.

0:15:13 > 0:15:14Judith, well done.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Sorry, Dan, beaten by our Egghead there.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18They are playing well.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20Have you got answers wrong yet, Eggs, I'm trying to think?

0:15:20 > 0:15:22No, you haven't.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Oh, dear, we need something bad to happen on this side of the studio.

0:15:26 > 0:15:27Dan, you've been knocked out.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29Please come back to us, both of you.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31We'll play one more round before the final.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36As it stands, the Shades Of The Night have lost three brains from the final round.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40The Eggheads have not lost any and we've just got one more

0:15:40 > 0:15:43subject before the final. It's Film & TV.

0:15:43 > 0:15:48Who would like this? It's between Matthew or the skipper, Adam.

0:15:48 > 0:15:49It's got to be Matthew, hasn't it?

0:15:49 > 0:15:52Yeah, come on, let's do it.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Matthew? OK. Our goalballer.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Against which Egghead?

0:15:56 > 0:15:58It's either of the two big beasts here - Pat or Kevin?

0:15:58 > 0:16:00I'll take on Pat.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05Matthew from Shades Of The Night is taking on the great Pat

0:16:05 > 0:16:08from the Eggheads. One more round to just make this count.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11So if you can get Pat out, then who knows?

0:16:11 > 0:16:12You are playing for £21,000.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Please, for the last time, go to our Question Room.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19So how did you get into goalball, Matthew?

0:16:19 > 0:16:21I went down the local college,

0:16:21 > 0:16:25I was, like, studying there and they started the team and I thought,

0:16:25 > 0:16:27"I'll go along" and a year later

0:16:27 > 0:16:30got selected for GB and never looked back since.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33How wonderful, so you were almost straight into the team then?

0:16:33 > 0:16:35I, literally...

0:16:35 > 0:16:38I think I'd been playing about three or four months before I got

0:16:38 > 0:16:42scouted and then went along to a training session and then a year in my life later

0:16:42 > 0:16:44I've practically been all over.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47And has it meant a lot to you, to do it?

0:16:47 > 0:16:48Oh, I've absolutely loved it.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51- It's me life at the minute.- And what is it, when you...?

0:16:51 > 0:16:54I'm just trying to picture playing it, because you've got the shades on

0:16:54 > 0:16:58your eyes, so you can't see anything, you're doing it all through hearing,

0:16:58 > 0:17:00- aren't you?- You're listening for the ball,

0:17:00 > 0:17:04but to help you on the floor there are lines with string underneath, so

0:17:04 > 0:17:07you can click them with your shoes or feel with your hands, just so you

0:17:07 > 0:17:09can orientate yourself on court.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Yeah, and presumably team-mates shouting as well?

0:17:11 > 0:17:13Only when you've got the ball.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16If you haven't got the ball, they can't make any noise.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18Oh, I see, so you can only shout when you've got it?

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Yeah, as long as your team has got the ball,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24you can talk until your team releases the ball and then after that it's silence

0:17:24 > 0:17:27until the other team collects the ball.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32How interesting. OK, well, good luck, I hope you do really well here. Film & TV, Matthew.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35- Thank you.- Would you like to go first or second against the great Pat?

0:17:35 > 0:17:36I'll go first, please.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42And here is your first question.

0:17:42 > 0:17:48The 1970s and 1980s children's programme, Multi-Coloured Swap Shop,

0:17:48 > 0:17:52hosted by Noel Edmonds, was usually broadcast on which morning?

0:17:57 > 0:17:59I don't think it was a Thursday.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04With it being a kids' programme it will probably be more...

0:18:04 > 0:18:06I'm going to go for a Saturday.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Saturday is quite right.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09Yeah, that was my weekend.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13I didn't think that was going to sound as sad as it did!

0:18:13 > 0:18:16LAUGHTER

0:18:16 > 0:18:19After that, it's just like sitting around waiting for something else

0:18:19 > 0:18:20to happen.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24OK, Pat, for which of these animated films did John Goodman provide

0:18:24 > 0:18:26one of the main character's voices?

0:18:31 > 0:18:36He did a marvellous job voicing Sully,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40a legendary scarer, in Monsters, Inc.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42Monsters, Inc is quite right.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Do you watch those shows?

0:18:44 > 0:18:46I watched them in enormous detail

0:18:46 > 0:18:48for Mastermind: Champion of Champions.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Oh, of course, that was your... Pixar films, yeah.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54I recently turned on the television at random and I was

0:18:54 > 0:18:58on the Disney Channel and it was the start of the fantastic warehouse

0:18:58 > 0:19:01door sequence, which is one of the great achievements in animation.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Because actually, I think, I watched them as a parent with my kids,

0:19:04 > 0:19:09but I do think that adults who have no excuse to go and see those modern

0:19:09 > 0:19:11animations are really missing out, aren't they?

0:19:11 > 0:19:13They're stunning.

0:19:13 > 0:19:14Pat, well done, you have got it right.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Monsters, Inc.

0:19:16 > 0:19:22Matthew, the 1970 film Love Story was advertised with the tag line

0:19:22 > 0:19:25"Love means never having to say" what?

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Love means never having to say...?

0:19:35 > 0:19:36Goodbye.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Ah, it is not goodbye.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44It's love means never having to say you're sorry.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47OK, Pat, to take the lead,

0:19:47 > 0:19:52the 2013 film Filth, starring James McAvoy, is based on a novel by which writer?

0:19:58 > 0:20:02I'm not sure how tightly this is linked to Trainspotting,

0:20:02 > 0:20:05but it's certainly by the same author

0:20:05 > 0:20:07and that's Irvine Welsh.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Irvine Welsh is correct, so you have taken the lead.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14Matthew, we go back to you.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16You need to get this right to stay in.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18- No pressure.- Keep your team alive here.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23Who was the host of the mid-1990s TV competition -

0:20:23 > 0:20:25The Big Big Talent Show?

0:20:30 > 0:20:33I've never heard of them, to be honest.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37But I'll go with Jonathan Ross.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39You've got it absolutely right.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Well done to you, Matthew.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42Jonathan Ross.

0:20:43 > 0:20:48But Pat can take the round with this question cos he had one in hand.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52Which British-born actor played the role of Prince Michael of Moldavia

0:20:52 > 0:20:54in the TV soap Dynasty?

0:21:00 > 0:21:03I'm not sure of this.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06In my time, I saw a few episodes of Dynasty, or "Die-nasty".

0:21:08 > 0:21:12But I'm certainly not on top of the plot or all the actors in it.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16I've a suspicion

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Michael Praed may have been in it.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23I think both he and Jason Connery are linked to Robin Hood as well.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26That doesn't really help me. Maxwell Caulfield...

0:21:27 > 0:21:30I'm a bit concerned here, I'm not confident at all.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33I think I'll go for Michael Praed, "Pride".

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Yes, I said Michael "Prayed", but you can have it either way.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39The only important question is whether it's right.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41Let's see, Eggheads.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44- Yep.- Yes, they like that, Michael Praed it is, Pat, so three out of three.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47Oh, they are so hard to beat on this form.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49Matthew, I'm sorry, you've been knocked out as well.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53If you both return to us, we will see what happens in the final round.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57So this is what we have been playing towards,

0:21:57 > 0:22:00it is time for our final round, which, as always, is General Knowledge.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03But I'm afraid those of you who lost your head-to-heads won't be allowed

0:22:03 > 0:22:05to take part in this round.

0:22:05 > 0:22:10So, that's Caleb, Dan, Matthew and Chris from Shades Of The Night,

0:22:10 > 0:22:12I'm sorry, but would you please leave the studio?

0:22:14 > 0:22:18OK, Adam, you are playing to win Shades Of The Night £21,000,

0:22:18 > 0:22:20a really handy jackpot today.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23Steve, Pat, Kevin, Beth, Judith,

0:22:23 > 0:22:25you are playing for something which money can't buy,

0:22:25 > 0:22:27the Eggheads' precious reputation.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30As usual, I will ask each team three questions in turn.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34This time they are all General Knowledge and I normally say, Adam,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37you can confer, but in this case, obviously, that would be awkward!

0:22:37 > 0:22:41- Yeah.- The main thing is, can your one brain defeat these five?

0:22:41 > 0:22:44Good luck. Adam, do you want to go first or second?

0:22:44 > 0:22:45I'll go first, please.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52Here we go, Adam, with your first question.

0:22:52 > 0:22:57Which of these names is a slang term for a private investigator?

0:23:01 > 0:23:03Private investigator...

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Now...I wouldn't say Niall.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11I think I'll rule that one out.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14Paddy, Shamus or Niall.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16I think I'm going to go for Paddy.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19It's actually Shamus...

0:23:20 > 0:23:22..although would you say that?

0:23:22 > 0:23:24- It tends to be an American... - It's an American thing, is it?

0:23:24 > 0:23:27Yeah, if you see the old gangster films from the...

0:23:29 > 0:23:31..'20s, '30s, '40s, that sort of time,

0:23:31 > 0:23:36it is sometimes used as a term for a private detective.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38OK, that's actually a tricky question.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41- Yeah, I've never heard of it.- All right, so Shamus is the answer.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Eggheads, over to you.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47Which poet wrote the line, "audentes fortuna yuvat",

0:23:47 > 0:23:51which is often translated as "fortune favours the brave"?

0:23:57 > 0:23:59It's Latin.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01- The other two are Greek.- Yeah.

0:24:01 > 0:24:06- Fortune...- But it's not Homer or Euripides, in that case.- Virgil.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09- OK?- Is that the only Latin?

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Could we just have it again, Jeremy? Just to...

0:24:11 > 0:24:15Which poet wrote the line "audentes fortuna yuvat," which is often

0:24:15 > 0:24:18translated as "fortune favours the brave?"

0:24:18 > 0:24:21- OK?- Think so.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Well, Euripides and Homer were both Greek and Virgil was a Roman writer

0:24:25 > 0:24:28who wrote in Latin, and that is Latin, and that seems like

0:24:28 > 0:24:32a good basis on which to go for Virgil.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35All right, very impressive quizzing as ever, Eggheads.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37Virgil is the right answer.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Adam, we go back to you.

0:24:40 > 0:24:46A full set of human adult teeth usually includes four what?

0:24:52 > 0:24:53Now, I should really know this.

0:24:54 > 0:25:01I took science up until GCSE, so can I bring that knowledge back?

0:25:02 > 0:25:06Canines, I think, are the ones at the back.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11My girlfriend is a medical student, so she'll really be angry with me if

0:25:11 > 0:25:12I get this wrong!

0:25:14 > 0:25:15Molars and premolars...

0:25:15 > 0:25:17I don't think premolars.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22Oh, no, could canines be the ones at the front?

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Canines or molars?

0:25:31 > 0:25:33I think I'm going to go for canines.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Canines is your answer.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37Let's check with the Eggheads. Is it, Eggs?

0:25:37 > 0:25:38- Yes.- Yes, you are right.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Phew.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Are they these ones here?

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Yes, the pointed ones.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46Pointed, vampire ones.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49- Two above, two below. - Two above, two below.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51OK, Eggheads, to take the lead,

0:25:51 > 0:25:56what is dried and salted to make Portuguese bacalao?

0:25:59 > 0:26:01I think it's cod.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Salted cod. Yeah, yes, it is.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07I've had it.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10It's not very nice. Well, it's not to my taste.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13That is dried and salted cod.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Codfish is correct.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19So they are in the lead.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21You must get this one right, Adam.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24Get this right, just to hold them off.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Which English comedian has performed stand-up tours

0:26:26 > 0:26:29called Noodle Meister,

0:26:29 > 0:26:31Fizzy Logic and Sonic Waffle?

0:26:36 > 0:26:39OK, so the names of those tours are quite out there.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Can I have the names of the tours again?

0:26:41 > 0:26:43Yes, let me just do the whole thing.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47- Thank you.- Which English comedian has performed stand-up tours called

0:26:47 > 0:26:51Noodle Meister, Fizzy Logic and Sonic Waffle?

0:26:52 > 0:26:57Hmm, I'm going to rule out Ross Noble, to start.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00It's between Bill Bailey and Michael McIntyre.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06I think I'm going to go for Bill Bailey.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09I totally understand that choice because it is the kind...

0:27:09 > 0:27:10It's the kind of stuff he does.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14He does music and speaking and a whole load of stuff, a melange.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Is he right? Has he kept you in it, Bill Bailey?

0:27:18 > 0:27:20Any of you Eggheads know?

0:27:21 > 0:27:25- Not sure. I think so.- I think it sounds right.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28Yes, they all like that.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31It is wrong. It's actually Ross Noble.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33It's the one I ruled out.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35And it's guessing...

0:27:35 > 0:27:37It's hard to find a way there.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40There isn't any way back for our Challenger in this round, so we have

0:27:40 > 0:27:43to say congratulations, Eggheads, you have won.

0:27:48 > 0:27:49Oh, Adam,

0:27:49 > 0:27:52and many teams have had this happen to them in recent days and weeks.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54- Down to one.- Yeah, it was tough,

0:27:54 > 0:27:58but they're a great team and it was always going to be difficult to beat them.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01And I know it's very hard not being able to confer as well,

0:28:01 > 0:28:04- when you've got your four team-mates at the back.- Yeah.

0:28:04 > 0:28:05Commiserations, Shades Of The Night,

0:28:05 > 0:28:08it's been brilliant to meet you and hear about goalball again.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10The Eggheads have done what comes naturally to them,

0:28:10 > 0:28:12this winning streak continues.

0:28:12 > 0:28:16It does mean the Challengers don't go home with the £21,000.

0:28:16 > 0:28:18So the money rolls over to our next show.
