0:00:21 > 0:00:24on a mission to rescue your unloved green spaces...
0:00:24 > 0:00:26So, boys, are we ready for business?
0:00:26 > 0:00:28THEY LAUGH
0:00:28 > 0:00:30..but won't be doing it on our own.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33You, the great British public, will be helping us.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36Don't drop the log!
0:00:36 > 0:00:37This is going to be quite a journey.
0:00:37 > 0:00:40PHIL LAUGHS
0:00:40 > 0:00:44Our award-winning garden guru Joe is in charge of the transformation.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48Green light coming this way. One, two, three.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51Anneka will go out and about to get you to join our gang.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53- What's your name?- David. - David, you're on our team.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56- How many do you need, I think is the question.- A dozen?
0:00:56 > 0:00:59And Phil is going to be giving it his all...
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Still got it. Used to play for England, you know?
0:01:01 > 0:01:04..as well as learning what it takes to become a gardener...
0:01:04 > 0:01:06Cor blimey, this is hard work!
0:01:06 > 0:01:08..but is he tough enough?
0:01:08 > 0:01:10- It needs a man on the job!- It does.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12Is there a man anywhere?
0:01:13 > 0:01:17This week we've had a call for help from here in the city of Sunderland.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19There's a little girl here, ten-year-old Hannah,
0:01:19 > 0:01:22who, along with many other children, is missing out on the joys
0:01:22 > 0:01:24and the carefree fun of being a child.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28Now, Hannah's not your typical little girl.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30She spends a lot of her time looking after her mum, Lynne,
0:01:30 > 0:01:32who suffers from arthritis.
0:01:33 > 0:01:37As well as her sister, Rachel, who is autistic.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40And this means Hannah doesn't get to be a proper kid much
0:01:40 > 0:01:43and muck about with her mates, and that's sad.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46I do think that my family set up is different to most kids
0:01:46 > 0:01:48but I would never change it.
0:01:48 > 0:01:50Just because I've got a different family
0:01:50 > 0:01:53doesn't mean I would change it for anything.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56I love them too much to do that.
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Hannah gets support from Sunderland Young Carers
0:02:01 > 0:02:03who help lots of kids and young people
0:02:03 > 0:02:08who are sacrificing their childhood to look after their loved ones.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11But one thing that could help these young carers make the most
0:02:11 > 0:02:15out of their precious time at the centre is access to an outdoor space.
0:02:15 > 0:02:20Not just bland parkland but a garden with real kids appeal.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23What the garden will do for me? Everything.
0:02:23 > 0:02:28It will give us, me a place to go to relax...
0:02:28 > 0:02:31to do whatever I want...
0:02:31 > 0:02:35to feel like a kid again and not a grown-up!
0:02:35 > 0:02:37'And that's where we come in...'
0:02:37 > 0:02:39- Right there?- Perfect!- Perfect!
0:02:39 > 0:02:42..we've got just ten days to transform an unused area
0:02:42 > 0:02:45into a wonderland for youngsters.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47Haven't got time to stop. We're up against it.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50There's no chance that we're going to finish this project.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53Look at that! Look at that! You got one little bit like that!
0:02:53 > 0:02:55But things don't always go to plan.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58If those volunteers don't turn up soon we are going to be in trouble.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01We need a helping hand to bring some childhood fun
0:03:01 > 0:03:04back into these kids' lives.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07Well, we can't make this happen for Hannah and the other young carers
0:03:07 > 0:03:10without LOADS of volunteers and that's where you come in.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Last week we asked for your help here in Sunderland.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16We asked you to come and join The Flowerpot Gang, get your hands dirty
0:03:16 > 0:03:20and you can see how we all got on later in the programme.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32Hello there, and welcome to Sunderland Carers' Centre
0:03:32 > 0:03:34on a very rainy day.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37Now, this garden might look OK
0:03:37 > 0:03:40but if you're a young kid who is desperate to find somewhere to play
0:03:40 > 0:03:42or hang out it's next to useless.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45But together, with friends and family from this centre...
0:03:45 > 0:03:47- ALL:- Yay!
0:03:47 > 0:03:51We're going to create a garden here for the people who need it most.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54That's this very special group of youngsters behind me -
0:03:54 > 0:03:56they are Sunderland's young carers.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59Now, it's going to be tough but with help from this lot.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03We're going to transform this bland space into a truly unique,
0:04:03 > 0:04:06beautiful and exciting haven.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09Were these kids get the chance to be kids again.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13Being a young carer is really tough.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16On the surface Hannah looks like any other ten-year-old
0:04:16 > 0:04:20but the constant emotional strain of worrying about her mum and her sister
0:04:20 > 0:04:21casts a shadow over her life.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26'Emotionally it is difficult.'
0:04:26 > 0:04:30When I were wee I tended to worry in case, like, something,
0:04:30 > 0:04:33in case, like, one of them falls down their own feet,
0:04:33 > 0:04:37or down the stairs, or something, and gets hurt. I'm not there.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41So, I do tend to worry. Even when I shouldn't be.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45Hannah's, kind of, like, a bit like a little glue stick.
0:04:45 > 0:04:49She, kind of, puts little sticky plasters on everywhere.
0:04:49 > 0:04:54She's a naturally caring child who cares for her sister,
0:04:54 > 0:04:57who cares for her mum.
0:04:57 > 0:05:02Sometimes little Hannah...doesn't get a break from any of that.
0:05:02 > 0:05:06I have to do my responsibilities.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10Like...with me sister I've got loads.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13With me mam, I've got loads.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16It feels like you're just getting loads on you.
0:05:18 > 0:05:20Sue, who works at the centre,
0:05:20 > 0:05:22knows what these youngsters are going through.
0:05:22 > 0:05:26Hannah is typical of a young carer.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30In the sense of she picks up on all the worry that mum or dad would have
0:05:30 > 0:05:33and then she worries about that.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37She's very protective of her sibling because she knows she's different.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40There is a massive impact on Hannah.
0:05:40 > 0:05:45The Centre supports young carers from the age of four to 25.
0:05:45 > 0:05:50Becky's been a carer almost all her life and looks after her mum,
0:05:50 > 0:05:54Lynne, who has MS and her sister, Nicola, who has cerebral palsy.
0:05:59 > 0:06:00Sit.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03'I started being a young carer when I was about two
0:06:03 > 0:06:06'and that was, basically, just helping my mum'
0:06:06 > 0:06:08and my dad around the house with Nicola.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11Like, fetching nappies and just being a younger sister, really.
0:06:11 > 0:06:15And, obviously, now I realise why Nicola needed extra help.
0:06:15 > 0:06:20When I was about 11, 12 my mum got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis
0:06:20 > 0:06:24and then ever since then I've cared for both of them.
0:06:24 > 0:06:28And as the years have gone on I've took on more and more responsibility
0:06:28 > 0:06:31so when me mam couldn't no longer, like, bath Nicola
0:06:31 > 0:06:35and help her get ready, then I, kind of, took over that role.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38And then, when I was 18, I became the sole carer for both of them.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42LYNNE WHIMPERS
0:06:42 > 0:06:43'There has been tough times.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45'Like, really hard times where I just think,'
0:06:45 > 0:06:47"Oh, I don't want to do this any more,"
0:06:47 > 0:06:50but...I do it because I love them.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54Because they're my mam and my sister, and...it's...
0:06:54 > 0:06:58People, it's so easy just to walk away but, actually, it's not.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03All those years of caring means Becky really understands
0:07:03 > 0:07:05how tough things can get for Hannah.
0:07:05 > 0:07:09Young carers might feel quite alone because their friends are at school
0:07:09 > 0:07:12and they're having a good time, and they just want to go out.
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Going to young carers, we all understand each other
0:07:14 > 0:07:17because we've all got the same situation at home.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19These youngsters not only deserve
0:07:19 > 0:07:22but really need a break from all this hard work.
0:07:22 > 0:07:26That's why we're going to turn this bland space into not one
0:07:26 > 0:07:29but two lovely life-changing gardens.
0:07:32 > 0:07:35A fun filled play area for the young kids, like Hannah,
0:07:35 > 0:07:39and an outdoor chill out space for Becky and the teenagers.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41This ain't just a garden,
0:07:41 > 0:07:44it's a little escape from the tough every day.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47I do think the garden will get rid of everything -
0:07:47 > 0:07:49all the stress, or the anger.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52Everything, and you can just be yourself.
0:07:54 > 0:07:59Two gardens in one space, that's a tricky one
0:07:59 > 0:08:01but luckily Joe Swift, our green-fingered guru,
0:08:01 > 0:08:03has got a cunning plan.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06I spent a load of my childhood
0:08:06 > 0:08:10running around outdoors with my mates without a care in the world.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13Now, this design has got to deliver.
0:08:13 > 0:08:15It's for Hannah, and the other young carers,
0:08:15 > 0:08:18to get a sense of childhood fun back into their lives.
0:08:18 > 0:08:19Something they might have lost
0:08:19 > 0:08:22through caring for some of their family.
0:08:23 > 0:08:28# Today I don't feel like doing anything... #
0:08:28 > 0:08:31Swifty likes to crack the whip
0:08:31 > 0:08:34so I find it best to put your feet up for a while when you can.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38- Oh, this is it, isn't it, Phil? - Beautiful weather, isn't it?
0:08:38 > 0:08:41- What are you to doing?!- Oh, he is! - What is this?- Here he is!
0:08:41 > 0:08:43We didn't know where you were, Joe.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45- Lying around!- How are you going? - I'm doing all right.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48- I've just been tweaking the plan. - Let's have a look!- Yeah?
0:08:48 > 0:08:50- You've got to get up! - All right, come on.
0:08:50 > 0:08:51- You all right?- Yeah.
0:08:51 > 0:08:53After you, my dear.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56- Right, this is the plan. - What are we got?- There you go.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59We've got, well, at the moment it's one big open green space.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02- OK.- What's all this? This looks good fun.
0:09:02 > 0:09:04Right, OK, this is for the grown-up kids.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06You know, the teenagers and above.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08So, there's, like, a barbecue area over here.
0:09:08 > 0:09:12A fire pit, erm, there's a real den feel.
0:09:12 > 0:09:16Exactly what I would have wanted if I was that age.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19Joe's plan is to split the space in two.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22For the kids we're going to create a magical wood
0:09:22 > 0:09:23with a huge oak climbing frame
0:09:23 > 0:09:25and a sandpit in the shape of a heart -
0:09:25 > 0:09:28a theme for all our gardens.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30- The sandpit's going in roughly around here.- Oh, it's a sandpit!
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Sandpit but with big boulders on the outside.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36Beyond the sandpit we've got massive mushroom seats
0:09:36 > 0:09:38and bonkers Perspex flowers.
0:09:38 > 0:09:42- Over here, more Willy Wonka-esque. Again, for the little ones.- OK.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44A sort of Willy Wonka world.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47You know, a little bit surreal and everything oversize
0:09:47 > 0:09:49- and all a little bit mad.- OK.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52And my favourite bit of this Hobbity garden?
0:09:52 > 0:09:56A mini hill with two tunnels to clamber around.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59For the teenagers, Joe's plan is to build an outdoor den.
0:09:59 > 0:10:03Arches lead into a chill out zone around a fire pit.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06There's even a barbecue. It's all very Ibiza.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08There's a rope swing to, literally, hang out on
0:10:08 > 0:10:11and hammocks for that summer vibe.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15- We've got to just imagine that we are all kids again.- Yes!- You know.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18- Easy! So easy to do! - We could do that!
0:10:18 > 0:10:21- Anneka, can you do that? - I could do that.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23- We're all kids again! - I'm there! You're on fire!
0:10:23 > 0:10:25Anyway, that's the plan.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28The Hobbit meets Alice in Sunderland play area for the kids
0:10:28 > 0:10:31and a hip hangout for the teens.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34So, Hannah, this is the very exciting part, now,
0:10:34 > 0:10:37cos we are going to create a magical garden
0:10:37 > 0:10:39for you and your friends to play in
0:10:39 > 0:10:41- but you are not allowed to see it until it's finished.- Oh!
0:10:41 > 0:10:44- I know, no peeking at all!- Grr!
0:10:44 > 0:10:47How are you going to manage, for ten days, not to peek?
0:10:47 > 0:10:50- Get my sister to lock me in her room.- Would she do that?
0:10:50 > 0:10:53I shall ask your sister to lock you, you can come out occasionally
0:10:53 > 0:10:56cos I want you to come out and occasionally help me
0:10:56 > 0:10:57- with some projects.- OK.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00So, I'm going to take you away, now. Have a last look.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02Bland, boring old bit of grass.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06When you come back, hopefully, a big surprise! Off we go.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09It's exciting, isn't it?
0:11:09 > 0:11:13I've also slapped a no peeking order on care worker Sue.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16We want it to be a surprise for her too.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26Right, day one. The team arrive ready for action.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31But, no, there's a hitch.
0:11:31 > 0:11:36Swifty spots a tree that will have to come down before we start the real work.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Beautiful tree. Shame it has to go. - Yeah. There is a bit of growth up the top, though,
0:11:39 > 0:11:41but that's gone, has it?
0:11:41 > 0:11:44Well, most of it's dead. It's got to come out, honestly.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46'It may look OK, but in a bit of a wind,
0:11:46 > 0:11:50'this brittle dead wood could snap off and really hurt someone.
0:11:50 > 0:11:55'It needs chopping down but will set us back at least half a day.'
0:11:55 > 0:11:58- Now's the time to do it before we start the construction.- OK.
0:11:58 > 0:12:03'Much as I fancy wielding a chainsaw myself, this is a job for the pros.'
0:12:10 > 0:12:13'Felling a 50-foot tree is not only a major operation,
0:12:13 > 0:12:14'it's a dangerous one too.'
0:12:17 > 0:12:20- Quite a big lump came down. Are we in the right place?- We're all right.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22TIMBER!
0:12:25 > 0:12:27- Yeah, lovely bit of wood. - Yeah, lovely.
0:12:27 > 0:12:29It hasn't half made a mess though. There's loads of it.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- That's what we've got to do. Clear it all up.- Let's do it.- Yeah.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35- Let's go. Let's crack on. - Tuffers.- Yeah.
0:12:35 > 0:12:39- Haven't you forgotten something? - Gloves. Where's my gloves?
0:12:39 > 0:12:42'Tuffers is worried about hurting his spin bowler's hands.'
0:12:45 > 0:12:47'Hang on, didn't he retire nearly ten years ago?'
0:12:47 > 0:12:51- The gloves. - The paws will now be protected.
0:12:51 > 0:12:55Oh, fantastic. I feel I could do anything with these gloves on.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Come on, let's get on with it.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03- Look at that. You've got one little bit.- I'm coming back for some more.
0:13:03 > 0:13:04We're going to get the chipper.
0:13:04 > 0:13:08- Chuck them here.- Chuck them there? - And we'll get the chipper in.
0:13:08 > 0:13:10I can't rely on Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dumber
0:13:10 > 0:13:12to do all the grafting.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14We need help if we're going to get this garden done.
0:13:14 > 0:13:18Time to hit the streets of Sunderland.
0:13:23 > 0:13:27Joan's project is really quite ambitious.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30There's a lot of, sort of, complicated construction to do,
0:13:30 > 0:13:34so we're heading out to see if we can find some people to come
0:13:34 > 0:13:38and help us over the next few days but we specifically need joiners
0:13:38 > 0:13:42and apparently there's a college where there's a construction course,
0:13:42 > 0:13:44so we thought we'd start there.
0:13:48 > 0:13:52Oh, look! Oh, bliss! Hello.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55'Wow, I've hit the jackpot here.'
0:13:55 > 0:13:57- Who are you?- I'm Martin.- Hello, guys.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00Look at this. We need your men.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04What we need your team to come and help us with
0:14:04 > 0:14:06is actually laying decking.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09- Right.- Will they be able to do that? - Yes, yes. The lads are very...
0:14:09 > 0:14:12It could be like their weekend homework.
0:14:12 > 0:14:13Yes, they'd really enjoy that.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15So how many altogether do you think you could manage?
0:14:15 > 0:14:18- How many do you need is the question.- A dozen?- Yeah, yeah.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23That was a bumper harvest. Absolutely fantastic.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27We've got joiners coming, painters, decorators. Hello, there.
0:14:27 > 0:14:29Couldn't be better. I'm really pleased.
0:14:29 > 0:14:34Back in the garden, it's pretty clear these wood chippings aren't going to shift themselves.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36Luckily, reinforcements arrive
0:14:36 > 0:14:39in the shape of Becky's gang of young carers.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41Happy days. Here we go.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45Let's get this garden started, team.
0:14:50 > 0:14:52Well done, mate.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54'Since the age of four, young carer, Jordan,
0:14:54 > 0:14:56'has helped look after his disabled brother, Craig.'
0:14:56 > 0:14:59What do you think about the garden then, mate?
0:14:59 > 0:15:03- I can't wait for it to be finished, see how good it'll be.- Yeah?
0:15:03 > 0:15:05- Give us a place to go now and then.- Yeah?
0:15:05 > 0:15:10What do you think's going to be in it? What would you like in it?
0:15:10 > 0:15:15- Somewhere we could go and relax. Barbecue perhaps?- Yeah, yeah.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17Somewhere to just chill.
0:15:17 > 0:15:20Somewhere to meet up that's nice, that's not just a basic park.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23- Somewhere that's got a bit more colour and life to it.- Great.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26- Well, hopefully, that's what's going to happen.- Hope so.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36- Oh, Becky!- Hi. - What time do you call this?
0:15:36 > 0:15:39'Becky rocks up, gang leader of the teen carers
0:15:39 > 0:15:42'and a role-model for the youngsters.'
0:15:42 > 0:15:45- So, Becky.- Yeah.- Come on, we need to put these logs over there.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48What's life like as a young carer?
0:15:48 > 0:15:52It can be hard but I just get on with it really.
0:15:52 > 0:15:58- I've done it for so long now. I just kind of get on with it.- Yeah.
0:15:58 > 0:16:02'I'm amazed how these young carers cope.
0:16:02 > 0:16:03'Becky really believes in this project
0:16:03 > 0:16:06'and wants to help in any way she can.'
0:16:06 > 0:16:10I think it will be really important, not just to our group, but all
0:16:10 > 0:16:14the young carers as well because we deserve something like this.
0:16:14 > 0:16:18- It's nice to have our own space that we can call ours.- Yeah.
0:16:18 > 0:16:19Well, we'd better get these logs shifted.
0:16:19 > 0:16:24- We're not getting any work done. - We ain't getting any work done.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27This is a big job, so to help the volunteers and us out,
0:16:27 > 0:16:29we've roped in some pros.
0:16:29 > 0:16:34Driving the digger is Colin. Then there's Joe's right-hand man, Ned.
0:16:34 > 0:16:38And our resident pessimist, project manager, Rich.
0:16:38 > 0:16:41Just cos you can draw it don't mean it can always be built.
0:16:41 > 0:16:42Such a little ray of sunshine,
0:16:42 > 0:16:46but there's a real problem with the final bits of the cherry tree.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49- So we need to roll them down there? - Down there.- Shall we have a race?
0:16:49 > 0:16:52- I like a challenge.- Lovely. - Bring it on.
0:16:52 > 0:16:55OK, this is my one. It's nice and round.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58To get all the logs moved in one go, Phil calls in the teens.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00Joe's going for gold.
0:17:00 > 0:17:02I believe, I believe.
0:17:02 > 0:17:04On your marks.
0:17:04 > 0:17:05Get set.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08Go!
0:17:08 > 0:17:10Come on! What you doing over here?
0:17:10 > 0:17:11Tuffers, no, that's cheating.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13That is cheating.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18Are you there? I think you might have won it over there.
0:17:18 > 0:17:19The winner is...
0:17:19 > 0:17:24I think it's the man here.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26The winner!
0:17:26 > 0:17:28Tuffers, what's all that about? That's blatant cheating.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30Picking up the log and running with it.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33- There's no Olympic sport... - There's nothing in the rules.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36There's no Olympic sport called log running. It's called log rolling.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39There's nothing in the rules to say you can't pick up your log
0:17:39 > 0:17:40and run with it.
0:17:40 > 0:17:43No, that's not true. You haven't read the rules properly, see.
0:17:43 > 0:17:45Typical from you. Anyway, you still came last.
0:17:45 > 0:17:48With the remnants of the cherry tree at last gone,
0:17:48 > 0:17:51we can get cracking on the hobbit hill and its tunnels.
0:17:51 > 0:17:54Now, like Rich said, it may look easy on paper,
0:17:54 > 0:17:57but building it is a whole other thing.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00Two massive concrete tubes covered with tonnes of earth,
0:18:00 > 0:18:03it's really tricky.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05We have to create a route through so the water can drain through.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07I think we should sink them.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10- If you sink them, they'll just fill with water.- No, they won't.
0:18:10 > 0:18:12- Yes, they will. - Listen to the expert.
0:18:12 > 0:18:16It's going to be pitchforks at dawn over these tunnels.
0:18:16 > 0:18:17Right, there you go.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19Yeah, lovely. It's good.
0:18:19 > 0:18:23Imagine you're a kid scrambling through and you go back
0:18:23 > 0:18:28and scramble through and then you go up over the top of them.
0:18:28 > 0:18:32- I'm just imagining where we could lose a designer.- Yeah.
0:18:32 > 0:18:35I think we're a bit heavy on landscapers on this site.
0:18:37 > 0:18:41The felling of the cherry tree put us behind and we work into the evening
0:18:41 > 0:18:44shifting tonnes of earth trying to catch up on the groundwork, but
0:18:44 > 0:18:47it's clear at the end of our first day that time may not be on our side.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56It's early morning on day two and Anneka's on the hunt.
0:18:56 > 0:19:00Now, more than ever, we need more volunteers.
0:19:00 > 0:19:02What we really need is some very strong guys
0:19:02 > 0:19:05because we're going to have a lot of lifting and digging
0:19:05 > 0:19:10and really some quite heavy, sweaty toil jobs.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13But I think the sea's over there. Let's have a look on the beach.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20Ooh!
0:19:20 > 0:19:21Lifeguards.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24But there's no-one here.
0:19:24 > 0:19:27We've found some lifeguards.
0:19:27 > 0:19:31We've been hilariously going up and down the beach. Who are you?
0:19:31 > 0:19:35- I'm Andy.- And I'm Sam.- Oh, Andy and Sam, we need you so much.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37We've been trawling Sunderland
0:19:37 > 0:19:40and we haven't seen any fit young people
0:19:40 > 0:19:42and then we were driving along the beach and we saw you
0:19:42 > 0:19:45and it was just like a mirage in the distance.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47Would you be able to help?
0:19:47 > 0:19:48- Yeah.- Definitely happy to help.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51It's a really lovely project and it will be hard work
0:19:51 > 0:19:54but probably nothing as strenuous as
0:19:54 > 0:19:57being out in that sea in all temperatures.
0:19:57 > 0:19:59Very nice to talk to you. Bye.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02'Well, let's hope those guys are going to throw us a life-line
0:20:02 > 0:20:06'because back in the garden the jobs are already stacking up.'
0:20:06 > 0:20:11There's a delivery of timber for the walkway, a major feature of Joe's design for the teenagers' den area
0:20:11 > 0:20:15and, thanks to Anneka, we've got just the team to build them.
0:20:15 > 0:20:18Look at you. You've all got your high-vis on, your hard hats on,
0:20:18 > 0:20:20your safety boots, all the tools.
0:20:20 > 0:20:24The construction students from the local college are all tooled up
0:20:24 > 0:20:25and ready for action.
0:20:25 > 0:20:26Are any of you chippies?
0:20:26 > 0:20:30No, chippies are where you get your chips from. We're all joiners.
0:20:30 > 0:20:33Well, whatever they're called, they are certainly joining in.
0:20:37 > 0:20:40Anneka has struck gold with this lot.
0:20:40 > 0:20:42The lads were doing decking, which is great.
0:20:42 > 0:20:45It kind of ties in with what the community's wanting here,
0:20:45 > 0:20:47so it's ideal really.
0:20:47 > 0:20:48It's better than college.
0:20:50 > 0:20:54Ah, another platoon of volunteers. Are you the lifeguard guys?
0:20:54 > 0:20:57- Yeah, we are, yeah. - Nice to meet you. Fantastic.
0:20:57 > 0:21:01And Anneka's lifeguards are joined by helpers from the care centre.
0:21:01 > 0:21:04I will leave you in Ned's capable hands, OK?
0:21:04 > 0:21:07He's going to show you how to strip.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10A couple of you are splitting up into sections
0:21:10 > 0:21:13just like that.
0:21:13 > 0:21:17Our Baywatch hunks and babes are stripping turf for a new flowerbed.
0:21:17 > 0:21:21I'm absolutely terrible at turf stripping, absolutely terrible.
0:21:21 > 0:21:26I think I dug a hole instead of just stripping it.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29We've got the joiners over there, or chippies as I know them,
0:21:29 > 0:21:31and then the volunteers here stripping all this turf.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34It's going really well today. Serious progress.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37Our teen carers get stuck into the turf too
0:21:37 > 0:21:39taking on the heart-shaped sandpit.
0:21:39 > 0:21:43Digging it out is one thing
0:21:43 > 0:21:46but filling it with eight tonnes of sand is going to be no small task.
0:21:46 > 0:21:49To pull this feat off it's one of the many jobs we're leaving till
0:21:49 > 0:21:53the big open day when we really hope the public will turn out in force
0:21:53 > 0:21:54to join us for one final push.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56Green fingers crossed.
0:21:57 > 0:22:02Right now, our local volunteers are really pulling their weight.
0:22:02 > 0:22:05The construction students must have been paying attention in class
0:22:05 > 0:22:08because before we know it, the walkways are ready.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11They also double up as seats for pow-wows around the campfire.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14Time to test them out.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17In a way, you seem closer-knit and tighter
0:22:17 > 0:22:20and seem to know each other better than a lot of groups of friends.
0:22:20 > 0:22:24Each one of us has got a parent or a sibling at home who we look after,
0:22:24 > 0:22:26so we've all got that in common.
0:22:26 > 0:22:30We all understand each other so these guys will know
0:22:30 > 0:22:35if my mam's poorly or my sister's poorly I can't come out.
0:22:35 > 0:22:37They understand that. You don't have to explain it.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40What a great bunch. They're brilliant.
0:22:40 > 0:22:45I can really see this garden being used for what it's designed for.
0:22:45 > 0:22:48It's somewhere to just chat, forget about everything,
0:22:48 > 0:22:52forget about your worries and enjoy being outdoors.
0:22:52 > 0:22:55Next on Joe's to-do list are those crazy-coloured
0:22:55 > 0:22:59ten-foot flowers for the kids' garden.
0:22:59 > 0:23:03Now, you won't pick these up from your local garden centre, oh no.
0:23:03 > 0:23:07This is a job for our resident artist, Miss Anneka Rice.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10OK, so do you see, that will be like one petal?
0:23:10 > 0:23:13- Can you do some of those for me?- OK.
0:23:13 > 0:23:16'A local design company has created the steel stalks
0:23:16 > 0:23:19'and perspex petals for us to use.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22'Now Hannah and her friends are going to help me decorate them.'
0:23:22 > 0:23:26- Do you want to have a go, Hannah? - Let's draw round it.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29Do you want to draw round it? Or, Kayden, you go for it.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31'We're using a special weatherproof glue
0:23:31 > 0:23:36'to attach the multi-coloured petals to discs of clear Perspex.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40'Back in the garden, Joe's in management mode.'
0:23:40 > 0:23:43Just sort out that bit of turf down there and it'll all be sorted.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46- Yeah, it's all going really well, coming along nicely.- Jo!
0:23:46 > 0:23:47I'm ready, mate, what do you want doing?
0:23:47 > 0:23:50- Nice on, Tuffers. I've got one big job for you.- Yes.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52- You won't be needing that at all. - Right, OK, no worries.
0:23:52 > 0:23:56- You'll be needing this.- Right. - It's just over there.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59Nice one. Hold that for a minute, mate.
0:23:59 > 0:24:00OK. So...
0:24:00 > 0:24:04# Pack up your troubles Get your old grin back
0:24:04 > 0:24:07# Don't worry about the cavalry... #
0:24:07 > 0:24:09I don't know who he thinks he is.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11"Go and do that, Phil. Go and do this, Phil."
0:24:11 > 0:24:13I never get to do any of the good jobs.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16'I think all those years of bowling have done for my back.
0:24:16 > 0:24:19'Luckily, though, there's some young ones to bail me out.'
0:24:19 > 0:24:21OK, not the most sexiest job on site,
0:24:21 > 0:24:23but we've got to go through this lot,
0:24:23 > 0:24:26picking up all the litter and a little bit of weeds as we go.
0:24:26 > 0:24:30Just to tidy it up a little bit. Grab yourself a bag.
0:24:31 > 0:24:33And get stuck in.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36# Pack up your troubles Get your old grin back
0:24:36 > 0:24:38# Don't worry about the cavalry. #
0:24:39 > 0:24:42What you need on a job like this,
0:24:42 > 0:24:45plenty of willing volunteers.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51'Back at the centre, one flower done, four to go.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54'As we work, Hannah tells me about life at home.'
0:24:54 > 0:24:57So what do you do when you're feeling sad at home?
0:24:57 > 0:25:00I tend to run upstairs, sit...
0:25:01 > 0:25:05..and just try and forget the whole situation.
0:25:05 > 0:25:09And then I tend to just try and figure out where it went wrong.
0:25:09 > 0:25:14- Does she understand, do you think, that you find it tough?- Hm-mm.- Yeah?
0:25:14 > 0:25:15Yeah.
0:25:15 > 0:25:17Is that quite nice about this centre?
0:25:17 > 0:25:20That you can come and be with friends who are going through
0:25:20 > 0:25:22the same thing, is that the best thing about it?
0:25:22 > 0:25:24Yeah, it has to be.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27You're all amazing. You know that, aren't you?
0:25:27 > 0:25:30- Cos you're holding everything together and you're ten.- I'm ten.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33- And you're...?- Eight.- Eight. You're eight?
0:25:33 > 0:25:36- And how old are you?- Nine. - You're nine.
0:25:36 > 0:25:40How old do you feel you're being? About 28 or something, probably.
0:25:40 > 0:25:46- Hm-mm.- 25.- Do you feel you're 25? And you're eight.- I feel like I'm 29.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48- 29, aw.- Hm-mm.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51To me, it's like, I've got a big weight on us.
0:25:51 > 0:25:55The weight keeps getting pushed down every time I do something.
0:25:55 > 0:25:59But when I'm here, it's as if the weight's pushed up.
0:25:59 > 0:26:04Well, we want you to try and have as much childhood as you can
0:26:04 > 0:26:06when you're in this safe place here
0:26:06 > 0:26:10and when you're in our lovely garden that we're making for you.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14'These flowers are going to be really colourful and a bit magical.'
0:26:16 > 0:26:19Lift it up and then we'll get an idea of what it's going to look like.
0:26:19 > 0:26:23- Ah!- The flower's upside down. - Ah!- Wow.
0:26:24 > 0:26:27Isn't that...? The butterfly's beautiful, the way it shows there.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32'It strikes me this is exactly what Hannah needs in her life,
0:26:32 > 0:26:34'a little bit of brightness and magic.'
0:26:36 > 0:26:38Those kids never cease to amaze me.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40Talk about old heads on very young shoulders.
0:26:40 > 0:26:44And, Hannah, just talking about her family and her set-up,
0:26:44 > 0:26:46it's beyond moving.
0:26:47 > 0:26:49Extraordinary, really quite extraordinary.
0:26:49 > 0:26:51'It's the end of our second day
0:26:51 > 0:26:54'and we've still a long way to go on this garden.
0:26:54 > 0:26:56'But the carers have been brilliant.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59'Phil, Joe and I can see first hand just how committed they are
0:26:59 > 0:27:02'and what a difference this garden could make to their lives.'
0:27:04 > 0:27:06I mean, the thing about these kids
0:27:06 > 0:27:09is that they have to grow up very quickly, don't they?
0:27:09 > 0:27:10- Yeah.- You were saying that earlier.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13Yeah, well, I think it's a case of, when I was a kid, you know,
0:27:13 > 0:27:15I had parents who, they were the responsible ones,
0:27:15 > 0:27:18I could just be a kid, I didn't have to think about, you know,
0:27:18 > 0:27:20any responsibilities at all. Whereas...
0:27:20 > 0:27:23- What time's your tea.- ..it's the other way round here.- Yeah.
0:27:23 > 0:27:27It's the other way round. These kids are worrying about their parents.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30- It's completely reversed. - It must be a lot of stress as well.
0:27:30 > 0:27:31It must be a lot of stress
0:27:31 > 0:27:34to have that, sort of, on your plate at that age, you know.
0:27:34 > 0:27:39Your job as a child was just to have freedom and innocence, wasn't it?
0:27:39 > 0:27:42That's what this space is all about. I'm not going to call it a garden.
0:27:42 > 0:27:46Where, erm, where the kids, after school, weekends,
0:27:46 > 0:27:49whatever, whenever they have time to get out and meet their friends,
0:27:49 > 0:27:52they've got somewhere to go and meet similar friends in a similar situation.
0:27:52 > 0:27:56- It's their space. - That's its brilliance, the fact that
0:27:56 > 0:27:59they're all going through this strange experience together.
0:27:59 > 0:28:01'We can't let Hannah and her mates down.
0:28:01 > 0:28:05'We've really got to get this one bang on.'
0:28:15 > 0:28:18'Early morning and, despite our initial set back,
0:28:18 > 0:28:20'Mr Swift is full of smiles.'
0:28:21 > 0:28:24It's great to see my design coming together on the ground.
0:28:24 > 0:28:28This is where this, these pipes, these tubes are going to be laid,
0:28:28 > 0:28:30so the kids can run through them from one side to the other.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32But also run over the top of them as well.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35It's going to be a bit of Tellytubbyland going on.
0:28:35 > 0:28:36We've got a few issues with that.
0:28:36 > 0:28:39'The tunnels are here, waiting to go in the hole,
0:28:39 > 0:28:40'but they're blooming heavy.'
0:28:44 > 0:28:45# I like to move it, move it... #
0:28:45 > 0:28:49'We try lifting them with a dumper, then flattening the ground
0:28:49 > 0:28:50'and try and roll them in.
0:28:50 > 0:28:54'We'd like to move it, move it, but we can't, this is serious.'
0:28:54 > 0:28:56Up to the top of the board.
0:28:56 > 0:29:00# We like to move it, move it We like to move it... #
0:29:00 > 0:29:01Swing the wheel that way.
0:29:02 > 0:29:04'No hobbit holes, no fun.
0:29:04 > 0:29:06'We just don't have the right tools for the job.'
0:29:08 > 0:29:12- How's it going, Rich? That's a nice, big hole.- Not very well.- Why not?
0:29:12 > 0:29:15Because we need to get these tunnels in there.
0:29:15 > 0:29:18We had an idea, but the idea won't work.
0:29:18 > 0:29:19What was the idea?
0:29:19 > 0:29:21We were going to use the machine to lower them in,
0:29:21 > 0:29:23but it won't carry the weight.
0:29:23 > 0:29:26- The dumper, I'm worried, is going to tip the whole lot.- No, no, no.
0:29:26 > 0:29:29- So what do we need? - We need...- It's the machinery.
0:29:29 > 0:29:32- ..a telehandler.- We need more big boys' toys. Telehandler?- Yeah.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35'The solution is a bit of kit called a telehandler,
0:29:35 > 0:29:37'a fork lift with a telescopic arm.'
0:29:37 > 0:29:41- OK, let's get one in. When's that coming?- Don't know.
0:29:42 > 0:29:43That's not the right answer.
0:29:43 > 0:29:46Well, that's the answer you've got and the answer I've got.
0:29:46 > 0:29:50'Unless we can do a Gandalf and magic up a telehandler
0:29:50 > 0:29:54'in the next couple of hours, this build is going to grind to a halt.'
0:29:54 > 0:29:56We need to get them in at the weekend,
0:29:56 > 0:29:59so I need it today or tomorrow.
0:29:59 > 0:30:03'Will we ever see the light at the end of these blooming tunnels?'
0:30:08 > 0:30:11'While Joe tries to work out what to do,
0:30:11 > 0:30:13'I'm off on a research trip to the seaside.'
0:30:14 > 0:30:17I say, what a lovely day for cricket.
0:30:17 > 0:30:19And it's great to be down on the beach,
0:30:19 > 0:30:21cos kids in this situation,
0:30:21 > 0:30:24they don't get out much or have treats like this.
0:30:24 > 0:30:27So we're going to have a bit of fun.
0:30:27 > 0:30:30I don't really go out on treats that much
0:30:30 > 0:30:34because of my sister not liking many places.
0:30:34 > 0:30:37I kind of get pushed out and it's not really my choice.
0:30:37 > 0:30:40I don't really come down the beach that often with my family.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43However, the closest we'll ever get is a drive along the top.
0:30:43 > 0:30:46Obviously, it's difficult getting on the beach and everything.
0:30:46 > 0:30:50- Hello, everyone. Hello. Hello, Sue. - Hello.- Hello. Where's Hannah?
0:30:50 > 0:30:51Hello, Hannah.
0:30:51 > 0:30:53- Hi.- How are you? OK? Good stuff.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56- Who's up for a game of cricket? - Me!- Me!- Yes.
0:30:56 > 0:30:58Right, we're going to play a little game of tip-and-run.
0:30:58 > 0:31:01OK? So, once you've hit the ball,
0:31:01 > 0:31:04you've got to get the ball into me here, throw it to me.
0:31:04 > 0:31:05And you've got to run.
0:31:05 > 0:31:07OK? Cool. Here we go.
0:31:07 > 0:31:11'And you join us with Tuffers bowling from the sea end.'
0:31:11 > 0:31:14- Oh, it's a big one!- 'And he's been knocked for six.'- Go on, Hannah!
0:31:14 > 0:31:16Keep running.
0:31:16 > 0:31:19Oh, good stuff. Well fielded!
0:31:19 > 0:31:22'That ball's travelling at least four miles an hour
0:31:22 > 0:31:23'and he's skied it!'
0:31:25 > 0:31:27Oh. Oh! Ah!
0:31:29 > 0:31:30Ah.
0:31:30 > 0:31:32'Tuffers out for a duck.'
0:31:33 > 0:31:35Oh, good throw.
0:31:35 > 0:31:36Oh!
0:31:36 > 0:31:37- Quick!- To me!
0:31:39 > 0:31:41- Oh, no, no! - 'And he's missed a sitter.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43'Don't think Tuffers'll be troubling the England selectors
0:31:43 > 0:31:45'any time soon.'
0:31:46 > 0:31:48Ah! No.
0:31:48 > 0:31:50Worn out.
0:31:50 > 0:31:52Well-played, see, hit them well.
0:31:55 > 0:31:59'Time for a post-match tea and a chat with care worker, Sue,
0:31:59 > 0:32:01'who called in the Flowerpot Gang.'
0:32:01 > 0:32:05What do you think the garden's going to bring to the kids?
0:32:05 > 0:32:08It gives them that room and it's going to be so flexible,
0:32:08 > 0:32:11so adaptable. They can use it for socialising,
0:32:11 > 0:32:13they can use it when they need some one-to-one space.
0:32:13 > 0:32:16You know, instead of being cooped up in my office,
0:32:16 > 0:32:21they can come out into the garden, nice, tranquil area and talk.
0:32:21 > 0:32:23You know, it's just going to be adaptable
0:32:23 > 0:32:25for so many different things.
0:32:25 > 0:32:26It's going to be absolutely amazing.
0:32:31 > 0:32:35'Back in the garden, a break through.'
0:32:35 > 0:32:38Rich! Good news, the telehandler's here.
0:32:38 > 0:32:42- Kept that a bit of secret. - Oh,- I'M- keeping things a secret.
0:32:42 > 0:32:46Anyone keeps secrets from me, I'm keeping secrets from you lot.
0:32:46 > 0:32:47Was that English?
0:32:49 > 0:32:53'A very big boys' toy has arrived. And it's tunnels a-go.'
0:32:59 > 0:33:03This looks very encouraging. It's in one piece and it's in the hole.
0:33:03 > 0:33:07'The guys might be enjoying playing giant Jenga,
0:33:07 > 0:33:10'but tunnel-trouble has put us two days behind.'
0:33:10 > 0:33:13Oh, ho, ho. Nice.
0:33:13 > 0:33:14'Well, they're going in.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17'But we've still got to shift ten tons of soil
0:33:17 > 0:33:19'to turn them into Joe's hobbit hills.'
0:33:19 > 0:33:22'Time to turn our attention to the team chill-out space.
0:33:22 > 0:33:26'There's a stack to do to turn this corner of the Northeast
0:33:26 > 0:33:28'into a little bit of Ibiza.
0:33:28 > 0:33:31'There's a fire pit to build, bench and table to go in,
0:33:31 > 0:33:32'a rope swing to hang.
0:33:32 > 0:33:35'But first job on Joe's list, the arches.
0:33:35 > 0:33:37- Bit further back.- Further back? All the way back?
0:33:37 > 0:33:39Right up to the board, there, there.
0:33:39 > 0:33:40Yeah, nice.
0:33:40 > 0:33:43Now, the idea here is that we've got a set of arches
0:33:43 > 0:33:46that you walk through as if you're entering a different space.
0:33:46 > 0:33:48It's going to work really well. And then Anneka's going
0:33:48 > 0:33:49to tell us how to cut them
0:33:49 > 0:33:54and she's going to personalise them, get arty with it. Should look good.
0:33:54 > 0:33:58The arches can be made up in plywood to be whatever we want, really.
0:33:58 > 0:34:02Fundamentally, whatever childhood you have, whether you're in the city
0:34:02 > 0:34:04or in the country,
0:34:04 > 0:34:06you're having a tough time, you're having a great time,
0:34:06 > 0:34:09when you're together with your friends, that is the escape.
0:34:09 > 0:34:12And I think that's true for everyone, whatever you're going through.
0:34:12 > 0:34:15And what's particularly relevant for these kids
0:34:15 > 0:34:18is they have an area to be with their mates on their own,
0:34:18 > 0:34:22away from the cares and, you know, the worries they have at home.
0:34:22 > 0:34:26'I want Becky and her friends to get creative with the arches.
0:34:26 > 0:34:29'It's the perfect opportunity for a little self-expression.'
0:34:29 > 0:34:33- So, girls, this was, you want to do a rainbow...- Yeah.- ..to start with.
0:34:33 > 0:34:36So go for it.
0:34:36 > 0:34:38- I'm so scared.- Do a bit there.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41'But for kids not used to doing things their own way,
0:34:41 > 0:34:44'it looks like they need a little nudge.'
0:34:44 > 0:34:46You can tell I'm not a graffiti artist.
0:34:46 > 0:34:49Can I just say, neither am I. Shall we have a go, though?
0:34:49 > 0:34:56# You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream... #
0:34:56 > 0:34:59Right, Anneka, do you think we should do red going straight across?
0:34:59 > 0:35:01- It'll look a mental, huge rainbow. - A mental...
0:35:01 > 0:35:03I love the thought of a mental, huge rainbow.
0:35:03 > 0:35:06Why not? It's your garden.
0:35:07 > 0:35:10'I'm pleased to see my budding Banksys coming out of their shell.
0:35:10 > 0:35:12'With so much responsibility,
0:35:12 > 0:35:15'these kids must have very little time to themselves.'
0:35:15 > 0:35:20So is this a full-time job for you now really, being at home?
0:35:20 > 0:35:24It is a full-time job, but I've also got another job as well.
0:35:24 > 0:35:27- I have my...my regular job.- Yes.
0:35:27 > 0:35:31- And I do that like 20 odd hours a week.- Yes.
0:35:31 > 0:35:36- And that's my time to escape from home life.- Yeah.- I love my job.
0:35:36 > 0:35:41I really admire how Becky and all the young carers navigate through life.
0:35:41 > 0:35:45Hopefully this garden will give them a taste of the freedom they deserve.
0:35:45 > 0:35:48- I had an idea!- Oh, my goodness. - We could have, like...
0:35:48 > 0:35:51flowerpots on the bottom of each one
0:35:51 > 0:35:54and then draw, like, sunflowers or something.
0:35:54 > 0:35:56Hug! Yes.
0:35:56 > 0:36:01- That is lovely. So that could be on the fourth one?- Yeah.
0:36:01 > 0:36:02Oh, she's good, this girl.
0:36:08 > 0:36:12It may be going all right for Annie in the chill out area,
0:36:12 > 0:36:14but it's chaos in the kids' garden.
0:36:14 > 0:36:18We've got the tunnels in, but we're nowhere near turning them into a hobbit hill.
0:36:18 > 0:36:21It's more like the Somme than the Shire.
0:36:21 > 0:36:23Yeah, we're in trouble.
0:36:23 > 0:36:25I hope you want to stay tonight,
0:36:25 > 0:36:27cos we're going to be here a long time.
0:36:27 > 0:36:29Even longer than last night!
0:36:31 > 0:36:34Six days that's been going in.
0:36:34 > 0:36:35The old tunnel, the two tunnels.
0:36:35 > 0:36:38Six days they started that, digging the holes.
0:36:38 > 0:36:40Then we had to get the old pipes over
0:36:40 > 0:36:45and now we're working out how to retain the soil and yes,
0:36:45 > 0:36:48all I can hear is Richard talking about some late nights.
0:36:48 > 0:36:50There may very well be a late night.
0:36:50 > 0:36:52Or two.
0:36:52 > 0:36:57But there better not be more, cos we've got to finish the job.
0:36:57 > 0:37:00Away from the tunnels, there is progress.
0:37:00 > 0:37:03Joe's natural climbing frame has arrived.
0:37:03 > 0:37:06And when he said natural, boy, he really meant it.
0:37:06 > 0:37:08Not everyone's convinced.
0:37:10 > 0:37:13It's different. Very different.
0:37:13 > 0:37:16I mean, it looks like a work-in-progress at the moment.
0:37:16 > 0:37:21So once we can see whether things are going to hang off it or...
0:37:21 > 0:37:24Is it just going to look like a tree upside down or what?
0:37:24 > 0:37:27It does look quite crazy, like.
0:37:27 > 0:37:30It might not look much to teenagers,
0:37:30 > 0:37:34but this locally-designed climbing frame is instant fun for young kids.
0:37:34 > 0:37:38I didn't realise it was going to have so many different elements going on.
0:37:38 > 0:37:41No, yeah, we try to get as much into a small space as possible
0:37:41 > 0:37:44to give the kids as many things to interact with.
0:37:44 > 0:37:47So, a climbing net that doubles up as a hammock,
0:37:47 > 0:37:49a hand-carved seat
0:37:49 > 0:37:51and climbing grips that also add a bit of colour.
0:37:53 > 0:37:56This space is really going to make such difference
0:37:56 > 0:37:59to a group of young people's lives and if you've been inspired,
0:37:59 > 0:38:02why not come and help us with our next project?
0:38:02 > 0:38:06This Friday we'll be in Bristol, where we've been battling the elements
0:38:06 > 0:38:09to complete a communal garden for two very deserving schools.
0:38:09 > 0:38:11Is this the water feature? It's in?
0:38:11 > 0:38:14But having been at the mercy of the wettest summer on record,
0:38:14 > 0:38:17we're still not done.
0:38:17 > 0:38:20- This is the most horrendous weather I'd ever seen! - 'And that's where you come in.'
0:38:20 > 0:38:24Please join us in Bristol to help finish this garden off
0:38:24 > 0:38:26and help celebrate its grand opening in style.
0:38:26 > 0:38:29Details coming up at the end of the programme.
0:38:29 > 0:38:33Back in Sunderland, I've come to realise that it's all too easy
0:38:33 > 0:38:37to assume that because you're a kid, you're carefree.
0:38:37 > 0:38:38So I'm keen to meet Hannah's mum,
0:38:38 > 0:38:42who really knows how much emotional support these young carers give.
0:38:44 > 0:38:47We've all absolutely fallen in love with Hannah.
0:38:47 > 0:38:51- She's an absolute star. You must be very proud of her. - I am very proud of her.
0:38:51 > 0:38:54- I don't think Hannah actually knows what she does for anybody else.- No.
0:38:54 > 0:38:57It's kind of something that's built into her.
0:38:57 > 0:39:01She does it all the time for no reason.
0:39:01 > 0:39:02GIRLS LAUGH
0:39:02 > 0:39:07For example, Rachel's sleep patterns aren't very good,
0:39:07 > 0:39:13so she'll come in several times a night just for reassurance,
0:39:13 > 0:39:16so Hannah doesn't get a lot of sleep. And obviously when she goes to school,
0:39:16 > 0:39:20none of the teachers really know that that goes on.
0:39:20 > 0:39:23- GIRLS LAUGH - And what would be the best thing
0:39:23 > 0:39:27that's going to come out of this garden, do you think, that we're doing?
0:39:27 > 0:39:30I think just the sense of being part of something bigger,
0:39:30 > 0:39:32giving back to the kids.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35To have known that they've helped create this garden
0:39:35 > 0:39:37and been a big part of it
0:39:37 > 0:39:42and that each and every one of them's got a bit of their personality within the garden.
0:39:47 > 0:39:49It's the penultimate day of our build.
0:39:49 > 0:39:51And with over 500 plants to unload,
0:39:51 > 0:39:56Anneka's lads from the construction college are turning out to be a rare find.
0:39:56 > 0:39:58I know you guys aren't plant experts by any means,
0:39:58 > 0:40:03but if things look the same when you stack them, put them together, yeah?
0:40:03 > 0:40:05And off here. Some great specimens.
0:40:09 > 0:40:12I only brought them in to do a bit of decking,
0:40:12 > 0:40:15but they've just carried on above and beyond the call of duty.
0:40:15 > 0:40:19- Thank you so much for all this. - Hey, it's great.
0:40:19 > 0:40:23It's a great learning environment for the students. They can't get this at college.
0:40:23 > 0:40:27We can't teach them this, it's real life problem solving and things, so...
0:40:27 > 0:40:30- Can I ask you a big favour?- Yes.- Will you keep an eye on this project?
0:40:30 > 0:40:35- Yeah.- As a college. So if they've got running repairs or something comes loose,
0:40:35 > 0:40:38it's great to think there's some legacy in that you can be there.
0:40:38 > 0:40:43And if we're down here, if there's anything needs doing, I'm sure we can lend a hand.
0:40:43 > 0:40:46- Hug!- Group hugs? - Hug, hug! Group hugs.
0:40:46 > 0:40:49It's really is exciting to think that this garden will not only
0:40:49 > 0:40:52benefit the young carers for years to come,
0:40:52 > 0:40:54but has brought the community together as well.
0:40:54 > 0:40:57And it's not just our college students learning new skills on-site.
0:40:57 > 0:41:01Me and the team carers are also adding strings to our bows.
0:41:03 > 0:41:06- What have you got from doing the garden? What have you taken from it?- How to garden.
0:41:06 > 0:41:10My mam did say to us, "It this going to inspire you to do your own garden at home?"
0:41:10 > 0:41:13- And I went, "Ha, no!"- No!
0:41:13 > 0:41:17- Do you think you'll be down here a lot?- Aye, already planning on it!
0:41:22 > 0:41:24But at this rate, they'll be hanging out on a building site.
0:41:24 > 0:41:28It's now less than 24 hours until Hannah gets her sneak preview
0:41:28 > 0:41:30before the grand opening day.
0:41:33 > 0:41:37With hundreds of plants still needing to be planted, there's a way to go.
0:41:37 > 0:41:41Surely it's just a matter of the volunteers getting them in the ground.
0:41:41 > 0:41:43- Simple, right?- Tuffers.- Yes, mate?
0:41:43 > 0:41:45- Take this bamboo.- Right.
0:41:45 > 0:41:47I'm going to stand up here and get a good placing,
0:41:47 > 0:41:49so if you go back there...
0:41:50 > 0:41:53Actually, back towards me a little bit.
0:41:55 > 0:41:57Yeah. No, too far.
0:41:57 > 0:42:00Ever since his put that hat on, he thinks he's like Napoleon!
0:42:00 > 0:42:03- Anywhere else.- They're like little sculptures...- All right!
0:42:03 > 0:42:06They're plants at the end of the day, not little sculptures, plants!
0:42:06 > 0:42:08No, but they're like.. They are sculptures.
0:42:08 > 0:42:11Where do you want these two plants?
0:42:11 > 0:42:15- They need...- I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. I'm sorry.
0:42:15 > 0:42:18I'm going to give you a nice little spot now. OK?
0:42:18 > 0:42:21- You're meant to talk to plants, aren't you?- Well, yes. - Do you talk to them?
0:42:21 > 0:42:24- But don't patronise them!- Don't... - THEY LAUGH
0:42:24 > 0:42:26- How's that?- Yeah, that's perfect.
0:42:28 > 0:42:30Oh...
0:42:30 > 0:42:33With the site cracking on and my planting skills coming up
0:42:33 > 0:42:37a bit short, I've been relegated to rock collecting.
0:42:38 > 0:42:39Joe's asked me to go
0:42:39 > 0:42:44and get some stones for the fire pit in the sort of team den area.
0:42:44 > 0:42:49To be fair, it's quite nice to get out of doing all the shovelling.
0:42:49 > 0:42:51- Oh...- Lead the way, sir.
0:42:51 > 0:42:54Oh, dear. They're quite big stones.
0:42:54 > 0:42:56- You're a big lad.- I'm a big lad...
0:42:56 > 0:43:01I hope they're the ones that Joe wants. But they're pretty big.
0:43:02 > 0:43:07Sit round there, few barbecues, a few toasted marshmallows. Perfect.
0:43:07 > 0:43:11Back at the carer's centre, with the fire pit marked out
0:43:11 > 0:43:14and the faithful construction students back for more,
0:43:14 > 0:43:16I'm sure we'll get this built in no time.
0:43:16 > 0:43:19Oh, that's come up lovely. Oh, that's come up lovely, that has.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Oh, that slipped in like a knife through butter.
0:43:22 > 0:43:27He's a good talker, but building a fire pit needs more than chat, Phil.
0:43:27 > 0:43:31- What? - Put it in a wheelbarrow.
0:43:31 > 0:43:34Put it in a wheelbarrow? All right. Don't want to upset the boss.
0:43:34 > 0:43:39"Oi, put it in a wheelbarrow. Put it in a wheelbarrow!"
0:43:39 > 0:43:40HE LAUGHS
0:43:40 > 0:43:45# I fell into a burning ring of fire... #
0:43:45 > 0:43:47Yeah, it looks a very good job.
0:43:47 > 0:43:52He's in the makings of being a very good landscaper at this rate.
0:43:54 > 0:43:57Praise indeed from Mr Grumpy! I'm stunned.
0:43:58 > 0:44:01I think that looks all right. Nice big fire going in there.
0:44:01 > 0:44:05All sitting round here. Happy days.
0:44:08 > 0:44:10- Yes! - HE LAUGHS
0:44:10 > 0:44:14Don't get too smug, Tuffers, it's the end of our last day
0:44:14 > 0:44:17and we're still nowhere near finishing.
0:44:17 > 0:44:20This den area, which looks pretty nice here
0:44:20 > 0:44:23but all the trim's got to go on all the rest of the benches
0:44:23 > 0:44:26and that's really time-consuming, very concise work.
0:44:26 > 0:44:30This muddy swamp over here, this is our hammock area,
0:44:30 > 0:44:34so poles have got to be sunk into the ground here and all these jobs
0:44:34 > 0:44:38sound quite little, but they take an hour or two, several hours.
0:44:38 > 0:44:41The planting, there's still a ton of plants over there
0:44:41 > 0:44:45still to be placed even in this garden.
0:44:45 > 0:44:48And here, with the tunnels, the famous tunnels,
0:44:48 > 0:44:51they've caused us so many problems, these tunnels.
0:44:51 > 0:44:55But they will be fantastic. They've still got to be clad, as you can see.
0:44:55 > 0:44:58The barking's going to go all the way down here.
0:44:58 > 0:45:02And this mound of earth, this is going to be flattened out
0:45:02 > 0:45:04and landscaped into a lovely grassy mound.
0:45:06 > 0:45:08It'll be all hands on deck tomorrow
0:45:08 > 0:45:12if we've got any hope of hitting our target.
0:45:14 > 0:45:19In less than five hours, we'll be giving little Hannah
0:45:19 > 0:45:23and then the younger child carers their very own private view
0:45:23 > 0:45:27before the official opening of our Sunderland Wonderland.
0:45:27 > 0:45:29We're really up against it, everybody.
0:45:29 > 0:45:31I want to get this whole mound turfed today.
0:45:31 > 0:45:34What we've got to do is tread it all over,
0:45:34 > 0:45:37we're going to have a group treading it over. Yeah?
0:45:37 > 0:45:39- So, you guys...come and do the dance.- Let's do shuffling.
0:45:39 > 0:45:43# Every day I'm shuffling... #
0:45:43 > 0:45:45Boogieing! Come on!
0:45:45 > 0:45:48- We're dancing! Let me see you dancing.- That's it.
0:45:50 > 0:45:52# Put your hands up... #
0:45:52 > 0:45:55While Joe and Phil keep the party going on Hobbit Hill,
0:45:55 > 0:45:57I've gone all psychedelic.
0:45:57 > 0:46:02"Oh!" is all I can say. They are fantastic!
0:46:02 > 0:46:05Oh, I've been waiting for this moment all week.
0:46:05 > 0:46:09The enormous flowers Hannah and the other kids helped make are ready for planting.
0:46:12 > 0:46:16Annie, they're fantastic. Just need a cocktail big enough for them now!
0:46:16 > 0:46:19- Yeah, could you make mine a double? - No problem.
0:46:23 > 0:46:27Over the next couple of hours, everyone's got a job to do.
0:46:27 > 0:46:30But when it comes to real problem solving,
0:46:30 > 0:46:31it takes a professional.
0:46:32 > 0:46:37We've got two hours to get it finished. There's a canny bit to do.
0:46:38 > 0:46:41I don't think we're going to get it done.
0:46:41 > 0:46:45We've flattened the soil on the tiles, so now the governor wants it turfed.
0:46:45 > 0:46:48What we're going to do is, because of the shape of the...
0:46:50 > 0:46:56As you know, what we want to do is lay them like bricks, so you put one down,
0:46:56 > 0:46:59the next one goes along here and they butt up to each other.
0:46:59 > 0:47:04- Quite nice.- But no overlapping. And no gaps. Anneka, concentrate!
0:47:04 > 0:47:07- I am concentrating!- You're not. Go to the back of the class!
0:47:12 > 0:47:14Shall we get another roll of turf around here? Lovely.
0:47:19 > 0:47:20A little bit of PMA -
0:47:20 > 0:47:23positive mental attitude.
0:47:32 > 0:47:35We haven't got long to go. Everyone's just gone up a gear.
0:47:37 > 0:47:40OK, guys. Amazing team effort going on over here. Fantastic!
0:47:40 > 0:47:41Another roll?
0:47:48 > 0:47:51We may be on a roll, but time's up.
0:47:51 > 0:47:54After nine days of seriously hard graft,
0:47:54 > 0:47:57we are nearly ready to show this garden to Hannah,
0:47:57 > 0:48:00one of the people who this garden is all for.
0:48:02 > 0:48:05However, we've got a whole stack of jobs still to do,
0:48:05 > 0:48:08starting with the sand for this sandpit
0:48:08 > 0:48:11and loads of planting - and that's where you come in.
0:48:11 > 0:48:15Last week, we gave a shout out to you, the Great British public,
0:48:15 > 0:48:18to come down and finish off our garden, but before we reveal
0:48:18 > 0:48:21who came down and gave us a hand for the final push,
0:48:21 > 0:48:23there's a very special girl, aged ten,
0:48:23 > 0:48:26who's been champing at the bit to see how we've been getting on.
0:48:26 > 0:48:30What you've got to do is absolutely no peeking until I tell you when
0:48:30 > 0:48:31so cover up,
0:48:31 > 0:48:33- and full hands like that, OK?- OK.
0:48:33 > 0:48:35One, two...
0:48:36 > 0:48:38Three.
0:48:41 > 0:48:43Oh, my God!
0:48:45 > 0:48:47- What do you think?- Amazing!
0:48:47 > 0:48:51Isn't it absolutely lovely? Shall we go and have a real snoop around?
0:48:53 > 0:48:57- That's the sort of climbing area, OK?- Mm-hmm.
0:48:57 > 0:49:00And then look at your wonderful, wonderful artwork.
0:49:00 > 0:49:02- Did it get finished? - It got finished!
0:49:02 > 0:49:05- Go and see if you can see your one. - OK.
0:49:05 > 0:49:08- That one, isn't it?- Yeah, look!
0:49:08 > 0:49:10- Isn't that amazing?- Yes!
0:49:10 > 0:49:13- And can you see all the shadows?- Oh, yes!
0:49:13 > 0:49:15- Shall we run over the bridge?- Yes!
0:49:15 > 0:49:17Go on, we need someone to christen it.
0:49:20 > 0:49:21I'm excited!
0:49:21 > 0:49:23I'm excited!
0:49:23 > 0:49:26Oh, I think we can safely say that Hannah approves.
0:49:26 > 0:49:30She's so excited, which is just, just the reaction I hoped,
0:49:30 > 0:49:32that she'd be thrilled with everything.
0:49:32 > 0:49:34'And if this is Hannah's reaction,
0:49:34 > 0:49:36'I can't wait to get this garden really finished
0:49:36 > 0:49:40'and see what everyone thinks at our grand opening. But first,
0:49:40 > 0:49:43'let's see if the other young carers approve.'
0:49:45 > 0:49:47Welcome to your playground!
0:49:48 > 0:49:50They love the bridge!
0:49:56 > 0:49:58CHILDREN LAUGH, SQUEAL

0:50:09 > 0:50:11Oh, wow!
0:50:12 > 0:50:15Oh, that is just absolutely...
0:50:15 > 0:50:18That's nothing what... That's far, far more
0:50:18 > 0:50:20than what I ever thought it was going to be.
0:50:23 > 0:50:24How good is that?
0:50:24 > 0:50:27HANNAH SQUEALS
0:50:30 > 0:50:33Hannah's over there. She's just been shouting,
0:50:33 > 0:50:37"Mum, look at me on the rope!" She's so excited. She's amazed.
0:50:37 > 0:50:40Absolutely amazing, overwhelming.
0:50:40 > 0:50:43Now, look, they're doing races now through the tunnel.
0:50:43 > 0:50:45That tunnel is going to be the most popular...
0:50:45 > 0:50:47the thing that caused us the biggest headache,
0:50:47 > 0:50:50- putting this wretched tunnel in... - It's been worth it!
0:50:50 > 0:50:53- ..is the best thing! - Tunnelgate comes good in the end.
0:50:56 > 0:50:59Sorry to ruin the party, but actually, we're not done.

0:51:02 > 0:51:05- Oh!- We've got more bark, more planting. This isn't finished.
0:51:05 > 0:51:0790% of the way there, but not done yet.
0:51:07 > 0:51:09I'm liking the sound of the surprise.
0:51:09 > 0:51:12- I've got a surprise.- Flowers, champagne?- Nothing like that. For me?
0:51:12 > 0:51:14I can't tell you, but it's a good one.
0:51:18 > 0:51:22Well, it's been a few weeks since we revealed the garden to Hannah and Sue
0:51:22 > 0:51:25and now I'm on my way back to Sunderland Young Carers
0:51:25 > 0:51:28for one final push and the grand opening.
0:51:30 > 0:51:33Joe's on site early to assess how much we've got to do.
0:51:33 > 0:51:35The list is getting longer.
0:51:35 > 0:51:39One thing's certain - we'll need some help to get it all done.
0:51:39 > 0:51:43The main jobs - completing the planting,
0:51:43 > 0:51:45filling the sandpit, and of course,
0:51:45 > 0:51:46there's Joe's surprise.
0:51:48 > 0:51:51In last week's programme, we called out for volunteers.
0:51:51 > 0:51:54Let's hope the Olympic spirit is still alive and kicking.
0:51:54 > 0:51:57Something tells me I'm going to get very wet today.
0:51:59 > 0:52:02Gradually, the garden is filling up.
0:52:02 > 0:52:04People have come from far and wide to help us.
0:52:04 > 0:52:06This is a proper army of volunteers today!
0:52:06 > 0:52:08Thank you so much. What have you brought?

0:52:10 > 0:52:12- What's your daughter called?- Tiana.
0:52:12 > 0:52:15Tiana, thank you. Are you eating it? Oh, you're picking the leaves off!
0:52:15 > 0:52:19Everyone gets stuck in, and as usual,
0:52:19 > 0:52:20Joe's issuing the orders.
0:52:20 > 0:52:24OK, now, you two place the mushrooms where you think they'll be good.
0:52:24 > 0:52:26Can you take the wheelbarrows full of weeds?
0:52:26 > 0:52:28As well as 500 plants to go in,
0:52:28 > 0:52:33there's loads of little finishing touches, including the sunshade
0:52:33 > 0:52:36and our Flowerpot Gang volunteers are on planting duty.
0:52:36 > 0:52:39I think it's, like, really good
0:52:39 > 0:52:43because it brings everybody together and there's loads of people here.
0:52:43 > 0:52:46I saw the programme, and I was totally inspired
0:52:46 > 0:52:50and I thought, "I've got a free day, I'll come along and help."
0:52:50 > 0:52:52- Have you got a connection with this place?- I have, yes.
0:52:52 > 0:52:54My oldest son's autistic
0:52:54 > 0:52:58- and his brother, who's nine, is a young carer.- Right, OK.
0:52:58 > 0:53:00So he'll be able to use the centre.
0:53:01 > 0:53:04'I've a nasty feeling that Joe's left the worst job,
0:53:04 > 0:53:06'filling the empty sandpit, to yours truly.'
0:53:06 > 0:53:08Well, you know the sandpit in there?
0:53:08 > 0:53:11- You know the lovely heart-shaped sandpit, Tuffers?- Yeah...
0:53:11 > 0:53:15- There's one problem with it. - It's got no sand in it!
0:53:15 > 0:53:17So you want that lot of sand in the sandpit?
0:53:17 > 0:53:19It's not going to move itself!
0:53:19 > 0:53:21I hope they enjoy playing in this sandpit.
0:53:21 > 0:53:24There's about eight tonnes of it round there.

0:53:26 > 0:53:28waiting to be shifted!
0:53:28 > 0:53:30I think I'm going to need some volunteers,

0:53:33 > 0:53:36- Ladies.- Hiya.- Just what I needed.
0:53:36 > 0:53:39We've got a massive job. We've got to get the sand

0:53:54 > 0:53:57OK, and what's your connection with this area and the garden?
0:53:57 > 0:53:59I just watched your programme the other week and enjoyed it
0:53:59 > 0:54:00so I thought I'd volunteer.
0:54:00 > 0:54:04'Thanks to me barrow boys and girls, the sandpit is nearly full.'
0:54:04 > 0:54:07We've got it going now, we're moving now.
0:54:07 > 0:54:10I understand what these young carers go through.
0:54:10 > 0:54:14It should be the time when they're enjoying themselves and being out and about,
0:54:14 > 0:54:17and they can't, so I thought the least I can do
0:54:17 > 0:54:19is come over and dig a few holes.
0:54:21 > 0:54:23Where's Joe?
0:54:23 > 0:54:26He's hiding in a corner with a treat for Becky and the teens.
0:54:26 > 0:54:29Under here is my surprise.

0:54:48 > 0:54:50- Right, go on, then.- Like that?
0:54:50 > 0:54:55Becky, Becky! Try hitting the ball, rather than the air around it.

0:55:25 > 0:55:27we've transformed bland parkland
0:55:27 > 0:55:31into a Sunderland wonderland for youngsters.
0:55:31 > 0:55:34A place where Becky, Hannah and all the young carers
0:55:34 > 0:55:36can rediscover their lost childhoods.
0:55:38 > 0:55:41MUSIC: "Paradise" by Coldplay
0:55:41 > 0:55:45To thank the Flowerpot Gang and all our brilliant helpers,
0:55:45 > 0:55:48the young carers throw a party.
