0:00:54 > 0:00:57As well as learning what it takes to become a gardener.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Cor, blimey, this IS hard work!

0:01:00 > 0:01:01But is he tough enough?

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Needs a man on the job.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05I know! Is there a man anywhere!?

0:01:05 > 0:01:09This week, we're in one of the jewels of the West Country, Bristol.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11- All right, my lover?- Yeah.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Famous for its maritime history and its engineering heritage,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16but in fact, that's not why we're here at all.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Claire Cole provides support at a school for kids who have been

0:01:20 > 0:01:23excluded from mainstream education.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25These are kids with real behavioural problems.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Let me go, now, let me go!

0:01:29 > 0:01:31BANGING

0:01:31 > 0:01:34She passionately believes a garden could make a massive difference

0:01:34 > 0:01:36to the behaviour of these kids.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39A lot of our young people have missed out on play completely.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Because of the young people they are,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43they've been excluded from play opportunities,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47or they've just had to become adults, fast.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Kids like 12-year-old Callum,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52who is one of the kids Claire teaches at the centre.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56His behaviour was just too disruptive for regular school.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58But why? What caused Callum's problems?

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Well, it all began when his little brother, Brandon, passed away.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03He was a little rascal.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Me and him was close,

0:02:05 > 0:02:10and now, I just don't have anyone to be with, actually.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16So, can something as simple as a garden next to the school

0:02:16 > 0:02:18help kids like Callum learn and grow?

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Here's the bamboos. We're going to stack them all up there.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24But, we've only got ten days to get creative.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26That's better, Tuffers!

0:02:28 > 0:02:31- And it's not going to be easy. - That's so sickening.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36Especially because of this, and this, and this.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38WATER CRASHES TO GROUND

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Yep, the wettest summer on record.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Is this the water feature?

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Which is why we are counting on your support to help.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Because, hopefully, it will have been worth every soggy second...

0:02:51 > 0:02:55..when this lad and his mates get to see their new garden.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Just tip it up right there.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59All right? High-five. Always.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02To get it all done on time, we're going to need your help,

0:03:02 > 0:03:03and that's where you come in.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Last week, we asked you to come down here to Bristol,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08get your hands dirty, help us get finished.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11And later on in the programme, you can see just how you got on.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26This is the story of one boy, one garden,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28and two very special schools.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32One for children with behavioural issues.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35The other, with special needs.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Hello, there, and welcome to Strawberry Square here in Bristol.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41A pretty name, but not a very pretty sight.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43No, this is the Bridge Learning Campus,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45home to two very different schools.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47This is the New Fosseway.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49CHILDREN CHEER

0:03:49 > 0:03:52And meet the kids from the Student Support Centre.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54CHILDREN CHEER

0:03:54 > 0:03:55For the last three years,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58these guys have been dreaming of a life-changing site

0:03:58 > 0:04:01that they can work and play in, but it's going to be a massive job.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05And it's going to be our job. We are going to transform this plot.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07We're going to make it a space

0:04:07 > 0:04:09where these kids can grow and learn together.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11- Callum, how are you today? - I'm all right.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14- You looking forward to getting stuck in and building the garden?- Yep.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Good stuff. We're ready over here. We're ready. Come on!

0:04:17 > 0:04:19CHILDREN CHEER

0:04:19 > 0:04:25The Bridge Farm Learning Centre is on the outskirts of Bristol.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27It helps children like 12-year-old Callum,

0:04:27 > 0:04:31who lives with his mum, Lisa, and sisters Sian and Tierny.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34CALLUM WHISTLES AT DOG

0:04:34 > 0:04:38This story starts when his dad left, leaving three-year-old Callum

0:04:38 > 0:04:41and his mum to care for his little brother Brandon, who was born

0:04:41 > 0:04:45with a metabolic disorder which left him unable to walk or talk.

0:04:45 > 0:04:50Callum done a lot of play with him. He helped with the tube feeding.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52He really bonded with him.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55And he was very, very protective towards him.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59Callum was teased and bullied for having a disabled brother.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01They used to pick on me a lot,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05they would throw stones at our house, and that.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08They used to take the Mick out of Brandon,

0:05:08 > 0:05:13and it made me feel really upset, because me and him was close.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18But, three years ago, Brandon died.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23He was five-and-a-half years old when he died in hospital.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25I was really upset.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Brandon's death left Lisa devastated.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33I found it very, very difficult.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36I couldn't concentrate on the other two.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39I felt really withdrawn within myself.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42But, then, they needed me more than me just sitting

0:05:42 > 0:05:46and crying all the time, so I had to pick myself up for them.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51After Brandon died, Callum's behaviour became worse,

0:05:51 > 0:05:54which led to him being excluded from mainstream school.

0:05:57 > 0:05:58I've got a short fuse.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02Anything that reminds me of my brother makes me angry.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Eventually, things got so bad,

0:06:05 > 0:06:09he was sent to a special behavioural unit.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13Yeah? Yeah? You will be sorry. Let me go now, let me go...

0:06:13 > 0:06:17It's a tough environment. The kids have some serious issues.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21And it's a real challenge for Claire and the teachers.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28In our centre, when young people get upset, they've got nowhere to go.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31They've got a room which has got some chairs in.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34It's not very inspiring.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37And they've got a concrete yard, where they play football,

0:06:37 > 0:06:41but it would be nice for them to have somewhere on their own to be,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44away from us, because in school, they are with us constantly,

0:06:44 > 0:06:46and it's not normal, it's not natural for young people

0:06:46 > 0:06:48to be constantly with adults.

0:06:48 > 0:06:53Claire would love a garden that would help the kids from both schools.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Everyone can see the benefits, and there's even the land to do it.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00The two schools have become allies in the campaign to turn

0:07:00 > 0:07:04the derelict space into a garden that everyone can enjoy together.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12The neglected plot is an old bit of the school's land.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16And although the staff have attempted to build a garden,

0:07:16 > 0:07:18they never got very far.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25But, hopefully, over the next ten days,

0:07:25 > 0:07:27we can turn their garden dreams into a reality.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Garden genius Joe Swift is our man with the plan.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34The first thing you've got to do is just clear the site,

0:07:34 > 0:07:36and see what we've got to deal with.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40- Is that going to be tough?- Yeah, it's going to be tough, Tuffers! Exactly.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Oh, come on! You might need a pair of gloves, or something.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Right, it's just me and the others. What do you reckon?

0:07:50 > 0:07:52- Talk us through it. - It's a bit of a mess.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54There's not that much that you want to keep, really.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56The trees are probably in the wrong place,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58so we'll have to move them. That's a big job.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02It's clearing the site, getting rid of the weeds,

0:08:02 > 0:08:04these raised beds are going to have to go.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08They're too dominant and they're in the wrong site.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10Just doing a typical flowers and lawn garden

0:08:10 > 0:08:13isn't going to do it for these kids.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17They need a space that they can knock about in,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20but that is also accessible to wheelchairs.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Joe wants to give them an outdoor classroom

0:08:24 > 0:08:27and a stage for singing, dancing and letting off steam.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32There'll be a magic fountain, a bouncy path made of recycled tyres,

0:08:32 > 0:08:37that leads to a secret den when it all gets too much.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39The kids call this place Strawberry Square.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42So we're going to give them a nice fruit and veg plot.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46And Joe's going to design a big strawberry mosaic

0:08:46 > 0:08:49to go slap-bang in the middle of the garden.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56- What we are going to need is a massive... Can you dig?- I can dig.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58OK, OK, well, us two can dig,

0:08:58 > 0:09:01but those trees are going to need more muscle.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06So, how about you nipping off and trying to find some big men?

0:09:06 > 0:09:10- If I have to.- Well, handsome, really, if you need, whatever...

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- Just someone who's going to get stuck in, really.- OK, how many?

0:09:13 > 0:09:16- As many as you can get your hands on.- Now there's a challenge!

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Right, Tuffers, here we go. A couple of big jobs to do.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22One is smash up the raised beds

0:09:22 > 0:09:25so that whoever Anneka brings back can shift it.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27And then there's also this. Dismantling it.

0:09:27 > 0:09:33You could unscrew the whole thing. By hand. But there's an easier way.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35That sounds good to me, mate.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39'Yes, you know what I'm thinking. It's time for the diggers.'

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Behind the wheel is our landscaper, Richard.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49He was happy in Sheffield.

0:09:49 > 0:09:50Grumpy in Sunderland.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53I'm just imagining where we could lose a designer.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57And it's anyone's guess what he's going to be like here in Bristol.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Our plan is to get most of the work done over the next ten days,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08then there will be one final volunteer push

0:10:08 > 0:10:11to get the garden ready for its grand opening.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15But we want this to be a big surprise for Claire, so we've slapped

0:10:15 > 0:10:19a no-peeking order on her until most of the work is done.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23But, if we're going to get going, we need to get Anneka's muscle, now.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27MUSIC: "Altogether Now" by The Farm

0:10:27 > 0:10:33- She's gone straight for the best of Bristol's brawn.- Let's go.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35First stop, the rugby club.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39Here we are, "Saint Bernadette's RFC, new players welcome."

0:10:41 > 0:10:46- Oh, hello! Are you from the Saint Bernadette's Rugby Club?- Yeah.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Hi, there.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51What we're after is some muscle and brawn for this project

0:10:51 > 0:10:54up the road, and we need some help, for heavy digging,

0:10:54 > 0:10:58moving stuff, and then tomorrow, we've got tons of hardcore arriving

0:10:58 > 0:11:01and we need people to help us shift that.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04You look big and strong. Yeah, you do.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06- Can you come and help us? - We certainly can.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09All right, cheers, thank you, guys, very much indeed.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Now, you can go back to your pints.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15# All together now... #

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Back at the garden, the rest of Richard's landscaping team

0:11:18 > 0:11:20have arrived, and the site's in full swing.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21One more.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23It's like a demolition derby!

0:11:25 > 0:11:29- Tuffers is having a smashing time, too.- Come on!

0:11:33 > 0:11:35- Hello!- Oh, hello.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37- Can I ask you a favour?- Yes?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40We've got a project at the Bridge Learning Centre.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42We're clearing a garden site,

0:11:42 > 0:11:46and we've just got loads of clearing to do, moving trees,

0:11:46 > 0:11:48and all that sort of...

0:11:48 > 0:11:50'Looks like Anneka's in luck again!'

0:11:50 > 0:11:55Would you be up for helping? Really? Brilliant!

0:11:55 > 0:12:01- It's not going to be glamorous. Oh, thank you.- No problem.- Wear wellies.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Perfect!

0:12:03 > 0:12:06# All together now... #

0:12:06 > 0:12:11With the rubble piling up, we're going to need that brawn soon.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16With two lots of sportsmen bagged already, can Anneka do the treble?

0:12:16 > 0:12:20Hello. Would any of the lads like to come and volunteer?

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- I don't mind volunteering. - Would you do that?

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Come on, you lot, come on.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28We need girls. We can't just let it all be blokes,

0:12:28 > 0:12:29know what I mean?

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Fantastic, so that's one, two, three, four, five, six more, great!

0:12:33 > 0:12:36We'll see you later, then. Thank you very much indeed. Bye.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41'I hope all those volunteers turn up,

0:12:41 > 0:12:45'because back at the garden, that rubble's really piling up.'

0:12:45 > 0:12:47'Tuffers has been grafting hard,

0:12:47 > 0:12:51'but he's kept his gloves on to keep his spinning finger safe.'

0:12:51 > 0:12:52Are you ever going to take the gloves off?

0:12:52 > 0:12:55You don't actually have to wear them when you're having a cup of tea.

0:12:55 > 0:13:01Having issues. No, no, they are very sharp, some of those bits out there.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03It's a tough old game, gardening!

0:13:03 > 0:13:07These hands are so soft, they are ridiculous. They are, look.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Don't take it personally, but I'm going to have to feel your hands.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Shall we just feel Phil? This is our feeling Phil moment.

0:13:13 > 0:13:14Soft hands!

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Ooh, lovely!

0:13:16 > 0:13:19They have never done manual labouring in their life!

0:13:19 > 0:13:21They've never done a spot of gardening!

0:13:21 > 0:13:24This is why we've got a load of people coming down

0:13:24 > 0:13:27to lug all that rock and rubble from there to there.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28You can't do that without gloves on.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32'As the site gets more messy by the minute,

0:13:32 > 0:13:35'Anneka's volunteers rock up right on cue.'

0:13:35 > 0:13:38MUSIC - "The A-Team" theme

0:13:38 > 0:13:39Hi, guys.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43'An assortment of rugby players, rowers and half a football squad.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45'Our very own Team GB!'

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Jackie, go first!

0:13:47 > 0:13:50'Plus, teachers, friends and family lending a hand.'

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Oh, welcome.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55With all this lot digging in, it's going to be a doddle.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57I'm looking for people who're good at digging.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01Big blokes, good at digging. Hands up. Excellent.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03Come over here, grab a spade.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Joe's got half of the volunteers digging out the old trees.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08There we go, we're off, look!

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Tuffers is on rubble-shifting duties.

0:14:10 > 0:14:16That's a good lad, you see? Ain't he? We've got some good lads here.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- The boys in green. Don't mess with them.- Don't mess with them!

0:14:19 > 0:14:22These trees are perfectly good. Waste not, want not.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26So that we don't damage the roots, they need to be dug out by hand,

0:14:26 > 0:14:29which needs a lot of manpower.

0:14:29 > 0:14:30How's it going, Tuff?

0:14:30 > 0:14:31Yeah!

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Teamwork! A well-oiled machine.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38Team spirit's are about to be tested.

0:14:38 > 0:14:43Well done, team. Just as the rain comes down, as well.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45Phil? What could possibly go wrong?

0:14:45 > 0:14:47What could possibly go wrong?

0:14:47 > 0:14:51# Just let a smile be your umbrella... #

0:14:51 > 0:14:52We love it!

0:14:55 > 0:14:56Keep it going, lads.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Well, it was all going really well until it started to rain,

0:15:05 > 0:15:07and it's actually slightly hailing now,

0:15:07 > 0:15:09but everyone's in good spirits.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12'Despite the downpour, no-one's quitting.'

0:15:12 > 0:15:13Follow me.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15'And when school's finished, the kids come out to muck in.'

0:15:17 > 0:15:21'I think it shows how much they really want this garden.'

0:15:21 > 0:15:24What are you expecting to get out of this garden, mate?

0:15:24 > 0:15:28A proper... A better garden than this.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Yes, well, it wasn't much of a garden to start with, was it?

0:15:31 > 0:15:33What do you hope is going to go into it?

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Some flowers and fruit.

0:15:35 > 0:15:40'Replanting the trees is the last job. Time to call it a day.'

0:15:43 > 0:15:45'And all our volunteers have put in a massive effort.'

0:15:45 > 0:15:47- Day one.- Yeah.

0:15:47 > 0:15:53'But there's one group who won't go home - Callum and his mates.'

0:15:53 > 0:15:56You CAN stop and go home at some point.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00'They seem pretty committed now, but I wonder how long their enthusiasm

0:16:00 > 0:16:03'will last. Phil's got one more job for the lads to do.'

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Little bit of dancing. Little bit of fancy footwork.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10'Bedding in our rescued trees.'

0:16:15 > 0:16:17'It's been a really great start to the build -

0:16:17 > 0:16:20'can't wait to get stuck in to the rest.'

0:16:22 > 0:16:24- Good day, team.- Nice one, thank you.

0:16:24 > 0:16:29We're ahead of the game - what can possibly go wrong?

0:16:30 > 0:16:34RAIN DRUMMING HEAVILY

0:16:34 > 0:16:38'Day two of ten, and Richard's broken out the big boys' toys.'

0:16:41 > 0:16:44'Torrential rain has been lashing the site,

0:16:44 > 0:16:47'making conditions atrocious,

0:16:47 > 0:16:50'and Richard's unearthed our first problem.'

0:16:50 > 0:16:53All right, Richard? How's it going? It is pretty heavy clay, isn't it?

0:16:53 > 0:16:56- There's some really poor soil under there.- Yeah.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00We're going to have to extract it or take it away,

0:17:00 > 0:17:01and get some new, clean topsoil in.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04How much do you reckon - how many loads?

0:17:04 > 0:17:07We've got about 80 tons going out.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10- OK, that's a lot of rubbish going out.- It's a lot of muck going out.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12And what about the schedule?

0:17:12 > 0:17:15I haven't even got a watch, but I'm getting a bit panicky.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17We're doing fine. We'll be there.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20So have you looked at the weather forecast at all?

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- No, I never look at the weather forecast.- Why not?

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Because I wouldn't come into work

0:17:24 > 0:17:26if I ever looked at the weather forecast.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29'Sound advice from our resident landscaper.'

0:17:31 > 0:17:35'As if on cue, it starts raining again

0:17:35 > 0:17:39'and the clay gets even sticker and harder to move.'

0:17:41 > 0:17:46'But despite the site being a no-go area, there's still a ton to do.'

0:17:46 > 0:17:49We're going to leave Richard on-site, on the digger,

0:17:49 > 0:17:52by himself, because otherwise we'll get seriously behind.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55Which means we can't get on the site at all, but we can be getting on

0:17:55 > 0:17:57with other things, like making up the planters,

0:17:57 > 0:18:00but we've got lots of willing helpers.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04'Joe's designed six raised vegetable planters for the garden,

0:18:04 > 0:18:07'and he wants them to be built to a height that makes them easy

0:18:07 > 0:18:10'to access for wheelchair users.'

0:18:10 > 0:18:13'The teachers like to get the kids from the two different schools

0:18:13 > 0:18:18'to work together as often as possible, so Joe's got a project for them.'

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Right, we've got the painters. These are the planters, yeah?

0:18:21 > 0:18:22That's right. The raised planters,

0:18:22 > 0:18:24and they're going to go out in the garden.

0:18:24 > 0:18:28We're going to pay them different colours, so we need two gangs -

0:18:28 > 0:18:31- an orange gang and a blue gang. That's what we need.- Orange gang?

0:18:31 > 0:18:36'Phil never captained England. At last now he can pick his own team.'

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Blue gang, orange gang.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41So the two blue guys, you're doing this side.

0:18:46 > 0:18:47Ah, beautiful.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52'And I'm genuinely impressed and a little surprised

0:18:52 > 0:18:55'by how well these two groups of kids are working together.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57'Helping the students from New Fosseway

0:18:57 > 0:19:02'seems to have brought out the softer side of Callum and his classmates.'

0:19:02 > 0:19:05I like working with the kids from New Fosseway because I had a brother

0:19:05 > 0:19:08just like them.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12So I know how disabled kids feel when they get picked on.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15It's a relationship, youth outreach worker

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Claire has tried to encourage.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19From an outsider's point of view, our students and New Fosseway

0:19:19 > 0:19:21should never, ever mix.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25Amazingly enough, they gel so beautifully.

0:19:25 > 0:19:30The New Fosseway students bring out the leadership in our young people,

0:19:30 > 0:19:32the caring side.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36'Their next task is to assemble the planters.'

0:19:36 > 0:19:39- Have a go with that, Callum. - Have a go with that, mate.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42'I'm getting a real sense of satisfaction from helping Callum.'

0:19:43 > 0:19:45- Nice!- Lovely!

0:19:45 > 0:19:48'It's great to see him taking a such a pride in his work.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52'During a break from being handymen,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54'me and Callum sneak outside for a bit of a chat.'

0:19:54 > 0:19:59What is it about building the planters and stuff that you enjoy?

0:19:59 > 0:20:00- I want to be a builder now.- Yeah?

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Because I've been doing this all day.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- I'm thinking of being a builder. - Yeah.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08'It's a big change from his previous bad behaviour.'

0:20:08 > 0:20:10I always kept getting excluded.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14What kind of things did you get up to, to get excluded?

0:20:14 > 0:20:18- Bunking off and throwing chairs at everyone.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- And getting into fights.- Yeah?

0:20:20 > 0:20:22- A lot.- Why did you get into fights?

0:20:23 > 0:20:28I had a short fuse, so whenever something triggered me off,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31- I'd go mental.- Yeah.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Have you had a look at the garden?

0:20:33 > 0:20:35How do you think it's coming on?

0:20:35 > 0:20:37- It's muddy.- It's muddy.

0:20:37 > 0:20:42'Callum and the kids are dead keen to get stuck in to the site,

0:20:42 > 0:20:45'but Richard's been having a tougher time moving all that clay.'

0:20:45 > 0:20:49Well, so far we've managed to blow three sets of hoses

0:20:49 > 0:20:51on the ground below just today.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54The mini-digger's now just blown another hose

0:20:54 > 0:20:57and it's...hell.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59We're in hell.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03'We're now three days into our ten day schedule,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07'and to avoid falling even further behind, we're having to

0:21:07 > 0:21:10'wait for breaks between showers, to work whenever we can.'

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Well, finally the weather's improved

0:21:12 > 0:21:15and we've got some areas now that we need to get

0:21:15 > 0:21:17this crushed hard core into, which is brilliant

0:21:17 > 0:21:19as it means we'll have some hard services to walk on -

0:21:19 > 0:21:21try to get rid of some of that mud.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25'It's a chance to start laying all the foundations

0:21:25 > 0:21:29'for the wheelchair-friendly paved areas and the outdoor classroom.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33'To spread all that gravel, we're going to need reinforcements.'

0:21:33 > 0:21:36- There he is.- Ah, nice one. Take a shovel.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38'Callum's beginning to take a leading role.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41'He's really becoming attached to the project.'

0:21:41 > 0:21:44We're going to get some of this crushed rock, hard core,

0:21:44 > 0:21:46and we're going to fill it into here, OK?

0:21:46 > 0:21:47So get filling, guys.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49That's it.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Wow, well done.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54Get it in there and then give it a little shuffle. Got it?

0:21:57 > 0:21:59Look at that!

0:22:02 > 0:22:05- Have you ever done anything like this before, Callum?- Yes.- What you done?

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Have you done a bit of building or a bit of digging before?

0:22:08 > 0:22:11- Yeah, Grandad's house. - Oh, Grandad's?

0:22:11 > 0:22:15Well, I can see you done it before. You've got a good technique.

0:22:15 > 0:22:16Not as fit as I was.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21'Hey, guess what, Phil - we've got tons of topsoil

0:22:21 > 0:22:23'needing a home, and that's only the beginning of it.'

0:22:25 > 0:22:29'But the weather's back to playing tricks with us.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34'One minute, it's blazing blue sky - the next, raining stair rods.'

0:22:34 > 0:22:36HE SHOUTS

0:22:36 > 0:22:39'Good job the kids don't seem to mind working in the wet.'

0:22:39 > 0:22:43Right, OK. OK, guys, I think we've done it. Shall we go and get dry?

0:22:43 > 0:22:47- ALL:- Yeah!- Good job. Excellent job. - Good work.- Brilliant.

0:22:47 > 0:22:48They're amazing, those kids.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50They don't mind the rain and the wind.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53You give them a job and they just get on with it.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55They want to do more and more. They're lapping it up.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57As you said, they just want to come out here and get stuck in.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00- It's great.- I haven't seen any problem sides to any of them.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02Well, listen - I'm sure there are loads of issues

0:23:02 > 0:23:05but it just goes to show that when you're giving them something

0:23:05 > 0:23:09to get on with, you're giving them a task, they just want to do it.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11More so than me, at this point.

0:23:11 > 0:23:15'Over the next few days, things just go from bad to worse.'

0:23:19 > 0:23:20Oh, my God.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23The whole of the country is hit by the wettest weather

0:23:23 > 0:23:26in living memory.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31- HUW EDWARDS:- 'The Met Office says this April has been the wettest

0:23:31 > 0:23:34'since records began back in 1910, and is warning

0:23:34 > 0:23:37'that more heavy rain is expected in parts of England overnight...'

0:23:40 > 0:23:44'The whole area is on flood alert, and unless the rain stops,

0:23:44 > 0:23:47'the site is in danger of just being washed away.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56'Day four turns into day five,

0:23:56 > 0:24:00and it's not until day six that the weather clears and we can do

0:24:00 > 0:24:02some important jobs, like putting in uprights for the stage.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12These guys are heroes.

0:24:12 > 0:24:17So, from me, do you need some more muscle again, for this topsoil?

0:24:17 > 0:24:22We could do with moving the topsoil over to this area for the turf.

0:24:22 > 0:24:26- Do you think we're winning, on the whole?- We're always winning.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27I always win it.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29- I never lose.- I love this man. He's wonderful.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33'And while we're managing to get the posts in,

0:24:33 > 0:24:35'there's still lots to do.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39'If we don't shift the topsoil soon, it'll turn in to a muddy mess.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42'We're now a good two days behind schedule,

0:24:42 > 0:24:45'so we're going to need more muscle.'

0:24:49 > 0:24:53'A garden centre seems like as good as place as any to find some blokes

0:24:53 > 0:24:55'who don't mind a bit of hard work.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57'But it's not looking promising.'

0:24:58 > 0:25:00Have you seen any muscly men?

0:25:00 > 0:25:05- Muscly men? I wish I had. - Maybe over here.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10Listen, have you seen any strong, muscly men?

0:25:10 > 0:25:14- No! Where are they?!- That's what I'm always saying, frankly.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18'It's like every man in Bristol is hiding.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22'Is it me, or the weather, that's keeping them all indoors?'

0:25:22 > 0:25:24I'm actually starting to feel quite despondent now.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27It's pouring down and there's going to be no let-up,

0:25:27 > 0:25:31so I really wonder how we can finish the project.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33'With Annie failing to find any fellas

0:25:33 > 0:25:36'and the project slipping further behind,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39'it's looking like we'll have to leave a load of jobs

0:25:39 > 0:25:42'until the big opening day, when we really hope the public will turn out

0:25:42 > 0:25:45'in force to join us for the final push.

0:25:46 > 0:25:47'If it wasn't for Callum

0:25:47 > 0:25:51'and our team of junior volunteers, we would be in big trouble.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53'We're not making them do this for the TV -

0:25:53 > 0:25:55'they just really want to get the job done.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58'And with all those tons of topsoil to shift,

0:25:58 > 0:26:01'before you can say "Challenge Anneka",

0:26:01 > 0:26:05'she's in there with the wheelbarrow, right alongside Callum. Brilliant.'

0:26:05 > 0:26:07Next one coming through.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Right.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13'Callum's mum, Lisa, has really noticed a difference

0:26:13 > 0:26:15'since he started helping with the garden.'

0:26:15 > 0:26:19It's the first thing I've actually seen him get stuck into,

0:26:19 > 0:26:21and actually complete.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26'I was expecting Callum to be bored quite quickly with it,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29'because he's not the one for sticking to things.'

0:26:29 > 0:26:33He's always got a smile on his face at the moment, and he's been

0:26:33 > 0:26:36'telling quite a few people about what's been happening.'

0:26:46 > 0:26:48'Joe wants this garden to be fun for the kids,

0:26:48 > 0:26:51'so he's designed a funky tyre walkway,

0:26:51 > 0:26:53'leading to a secret hideout.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59'But at the moment, this is anything but fun for Richard.'

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I don't know. Battle of the Somme.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06'We need the weather to hold if we're to stand a chance

0:27:06 > 0:27:09'of giving Claire her sneak preview of the garden,

0:27:09 > 0:27:11'but the weather's a fickle thing.'

0:27:19 > 0:27:20'At last our luck is in.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26'By the weekend, it's not raining. Result.'

0:27:29 > 0:27:31'It means we can start to build all the fun things

0:27:31 > 0:27:34'that will give this garden its character.'

0:27:34 > 0:27:36Right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to turfing.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39'Like the chill-out lawn.'

0:27:41 > 0:27:44'And right next door to the turfing is the paving -

0:27:44 > 0:27:49'that's 100 seriously heavy tiles, each needing to be laid. Phew!

0:27:49 > 0:27:52'So come on, the volunteers.'

0:27:52 > 0:27:54- In you go. - Follow that man over there...

0:27:54 > 0:27:56'Anneka's rugby boys are back in action,

0:27:56 > 0:28:02'and, not to be outdone, the rowers are helping out too.'

0:28:03 > 0:28:08'Anneka popped down to the river and asked us to come and help,'

0:28:08 > 0:28:10so we thought it was nice to get involved with something

0:28:10 > 0:28:12in the community and help out with the project.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20'Over the next couple of hours, our gang of family, teachers

0:28:20 > 0:28:23'and volunteers claw back time.'

0:28:23 > 0:28:25That was easy. Whoah!

0:28:25 > 0:28:29'If you've been inspired by these amazing children

0:28:29 > 0:28:33'and volunteers, then you might like to come along to East London.

0:28:33 > 0:28:37'We're going to create a garden for nine-year-old Jeidan

0:28:37 > 0:28:39'and his community.'

0:28:40 > 0:28:42I'm loving this!

0:28:42 > 0:28:44'So come along on Friday

0:28:44 > 0:28:48'to give us a hand at finishing off and celebrating the garden.'

0:28:48 > 0:28:51So stay tuned for details at the end of the programme

0:28:51 > 0:28:53how you can get involved.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57'As for our Bristol kids, we needn't have doubted their enthusiasm.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00'They can't get enough of this gardening lark.'

0:29:00 > 0:29:01'We've been building a shed,'

0:29:01 > 0:29:03I've been helping with the cement,

0:29:03 > 0:29:06'I've been moving all the chippings off here.'

0:29:06 > 0:29:09Now I've got an aching back.

0:29:09 > 0:29:13'And the kids' attitude hasn't gone unnoticed by their teacher, Kate.'

0:29:13 > 0:29:15'I have enjoyed watching children'

0:29:15 > 0:29:19that sometimes find it difficult to get on working really well together.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21'It was lovely to see them having some really decent

0:29:21 > 0:29:23'quality social time together,

0:29:23 > 0:29:26'with no animosity, no anxiety, no stress.'

0:29:26 > 0:29:28It was great.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33'By the end of the day, they all deserve an Olympic medal

0:29:33 > 0:29:35'for progress.

0:29:42 > 0:29:47'Back in Bristol, the wettest month this century is back for more,

0:29:47 > 0:29:49'and it's ravaging the site.

0:29:49 > 0:29:53'But with only three days until Claire gets her sneak peek

0:29:53 > 0:29:55'at the garden, can Richard and his team get it done?'

0:29:55 > 0:29:57'Time for a soggy early-morning inspection.'

0:29:57 > 0:30:00- Wow.- Oh, wow.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04It's come on. All right, lads! Keep up the good work!

0:30:04 > 0:30:07Look at Richard, smiling as usual(!) I've brought the rain with me!

0:30:07 > 0:30:09What are those tyres again?

0:30:09 > 0:30:11That's leading up to the little bamboo bit?

0:30:11 > 0:30:13That's for the kids to jump on, and leading up to that bit...

0:30:13 > 0:30:15They can bounce up there.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18- ..and also planted all around. Yeah, like Tigger.- Yeah!

0:30:18 > 0:30:22Come on, let's get in there and have a look.

0:30:22 > 0:30:26- It's looking great, Richard. - And that's the stage? - do you want us to go that way? Oh.

0:30:26 > 0:30:31He's not speaking. He's not speaking to you. He's just directing you.

0:30:31 > 0:30:33He's trying to blame it all on me, the weather.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37You couldn't have had worse conditions.

0:30:37 > 0:30:40If you can build a garden in these conditions,

0:30:40 > 0:30:42you can build a garden anywhere, any time.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45This is the worst ever.

0:30:45 > 0:30:50- THEY LAUGH - Ever, in my 25 years building gardens.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53I don't think I've ever...

0:30:53 > 0:30:56It has been relentless. Keep going. Keep going.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00You're getting a Tuffers hug. Do you want a Joe Swift hug?

0:31:00 > 0:31:03Oh! We're friends again!

0:31:03 > 0:31:07'All this bad weather means we're still two days behind schedule.'

0:31:07 > 0:31:11'But the team's been incredible - the lawn's down,

0:31:11 > 0:31:13'the bouncy tyre path's taking shape

0:31:13 > 0:31:16'and we're making progress with the stage.'

0:31:16 > 0:31:19'The big problem is all those wheelchair-friendly hard areas.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21'Laying concrete in the rain is a big no-no!

0:31:21 > 0:31:24'As they say, it's too wet to set.'

0:31:24 > 0:31:26- This is unlayable.- OK.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29We've got high winds, we're on a yellow flood alert.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32OK, well, you don't worry about planting, OK?

0:31:32 > 0:31:34Let me worry about the planting for the next few days.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38Forget about the planting - just get on with the hard landscaping.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40What's important about this garden is it's a legacy garden.

0:31:40 > 0:31:44It's about the quality of the build. It's built to last - that's the most important thing.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50- If you could sort the weather out, Phil...- I'll have a go.- Can you?

0:31:50 > 0:31:53Cos you could always stop the rain when you wanted to do a bit of bowling!

0:31:53 > 0:31:54Hello? Hello?

0:31:54 > 0:31:58Can we sort the weather out up there? Thanks very much. Easy!

0:31:58 > 0:32:00- That's job done!- Job done!

0:32:04 > 0:32:08Whether our prayers are answered remains to be seen -

0:32:08 > 0:32:11but those planters aren't going to move themselves!

0:32:12 > 0:32:15- Right. One down, six to go. - Right, let's do it.

0:32:16 > 0:32:17Oh. Door's shut.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20That's the one. That's the one.

0:32:21 > 0:32:25'With 20 tonnes of top-soil to divide between the planters

0:32:25 > 0:32:29'and the flower beds, our army of little landscapers get stuck in.'

0:32:29 > 0:32:31- Right. Shall we fill this one up? - Yeah.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38'Captain Callum to the fore. We're making light work of a heavy job.'

0:32:40 > 0:32:43- How d'you think it's going, Kate? - Really well, actually, yes.

0:32:43 > 0:32:46It's been so wet today - it's been ridiculous.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48I don't know how these guys have kept going, really.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50They've been amazing!

0:32:50 > 0:32:55- I mean, they've just thrown themselves at it 100%, ain't they, the kids?- Yeah, well, they do.

0:32:55 > 0:32:59They get something that they get hooked on to and that's it - they'll do it for ever.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04'The planters are filling up fast

0:33:04 > 0:33:07'and with the roof of the stage beginning to take shape,

0:33:07 > 0:33:11'Joe's got time to get marking out his clever hi-tech fountain.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14'A fountain in the rain. Oh, the irony.'

0:33:14 > 0:33:16Joe, is this the water feature?

0:33:16 > 0:33:19I love it! I think it's fab!

0:33:19 > 0:33:23It's great. It's, er...lovely colour.

0:33:24 > 0:33:29'Even in the most dismal conditions, we can always rely on Tuffers to keep up our spirits.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33'But the situation's no laughing matter -

0:33:33 > 0:33:38'we're massively behind schedule and there's a huge consignment of plants on its way.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40'We need some green-fingered helpers fast.'

0:33:43 > 0:33:44Oh, look!

0:33:46 > 0:33:47St Giles Allotments.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49Hello, I'm Anneka.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54What we need are some green-fingered experts

0:33:54 > 0:33:58- to come and help us on a project up at the Bridge Learning Centre.- OK.

0:33:58 > 0:34:02- I could chat to a few people.- Could you?- Yeah.- That would be amazing. - Try and get a few people up here.

0:34:04 > 0:34:07Now, there's another allotment down here, apparently. Ooh!

0:34:08 > 0:34:12- There's a man. What's your name? - Steve, my name is.- This is Steve!

0:34:13 > 0:34:15We're doing this lovely garden project

0:34:15 > 0:34:19and we need people like you to put - lovingly put - our plants in.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22- Course I will, yeah.- You know, you know a bit about horticulture.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26- Thank you so much. Lovely to see you.- Lovely to see you.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30- Good luck with your egg collection. - Thank you.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34What I am finding here in Bristol - and especially

0:34:34 > 0:34:37around this world of gardening and plants and allotments -

0:34:37 > 0:34:43is how community-minded everyone is and so willing to help and wanting to help.

0:34:43 > 0:34:44It's just great. Just great.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49'Back at site, our precious plants arrive bang on time -

0:34:49 > 0:34:50'nearly 500 of them.'

0:34:50 > 0:34:54Plants have arrived! The lovely plants have arrived

0:34:54 > 0:34:56and we need to sort them out.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58Come on, Callum, mate. Number ten. Come on, son.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02- Wow!- Hey!- Whoa!

0:35:04 > 0:35:06- Chain gang!- Chain gang!

0:35:07 > 0:35:10- We're going to stack 'em all up there.- On the fence.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13Isn't it exciting to see some plants?

0:35:15 > 0:35:17Here's the bamboos.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20The black bamboos.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22'We've got the plants off the lorry.

0:35:22 > 0:35:25'Now we need to get them into the ground.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28'Annie's recruits arrive in the nick of time. Result!'

0:35:28 > 0:35:33- The first load of my green-fingered friends. This is Eric.- Eric.

0:35:33 > 0:35:37The black bamboos. The big ones. They're the first thing that are going to go in

0:35:37 > 0:35:40cos they're going to create this den towards the back of the garden.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43So if we can get them up there, I'll be up there and we can start placing them around.

0:35:43 > 0:35:47That's it. Keep on the boards! We're going to put, like, some bark or something.

0:35:48 > 0:35:52'The last two days of downpours have turned the garden into a muddy mess.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55'It's like trying to plant up in treacle.'

0:35:55 > 0:35:58- That's so slippery, isn't it? - You all right? You all right?

0:35:58 > 0:36:01And then just, yeah, dump it there, and then we'll...

0:36:01 > 0:36:02Lovely. Well done, Callum.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05'But with the gardening know-how of our allotment holders

0:36:05 > 0:36:10'and the sheer enthusiasm of Callum and his mates, we're really cracking on. What a team!'

0:36:10 > 0:36:13Exciting, isn't it, seeing that green of the turf?

0:36:13 > 0:36:16As soon as you get to planting... Hard landscaping is depressing...

0:36:16 > 0:36:20Also it's just the right moment, cos everyone was getting quite despondent, and now...

0:36:20 > 0:36:22It's uplifting, isn't it, seeing plants arrive?

0:36:22 > 0:36:25- Most exciting part of any garden coming together.- I know.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28- It's wonderful. There you are. - Oh, cheers(!)

0:36:28 > 0:36:31- Joe, we've got some "heu-cherr-a". - Heuchera.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33Heuchera. Heuchera.

0:36:33 > 0:36:34Lovely.

0:36:35 > 0:36:39These boulders - the idea is just to create some stepping stones

0:36:39 > 0:36:42from the paved area over to the lawn.

0:36:42 > 0:36:46Imagine you're a kid and want to jump across those boulders to get onto the lawn. Simple as that!

0:36:49 > 0:36:51That's good. Lovely. Let's have a go.

0:36:54 > 0:36:57Oh, yeah, I like... Not on the lawn!

0:36:57 > 0:37:00Oh!

0:37:00 > 0:37:04Oh, no, look what I've done! (Don't tell Richard!)

0:37:04 > 0:37:06'Despite Joe's little lawn mishap,

0:37:06 > 0:37:10'today's been a massive morale boost - and not a moment too soon.'

0:37:10 > 0:37:13Honestly, it started off - spirits were so low

0:37:13 > 0:37:16and Richard said, "There's no way we're going to get this finished."

0:37:16 > 0:37:19But then we got some plants into this garden

0:37:19 > 0:37:22and as soon as people see plants, they think, "It's a garden, it's uplifting."

0:37:22 > 0:37:26It motivates people to want to get this garden finished.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28I'm not saying we ARE going to get this finished

0:37:28 > 0:37:30but we're going to give it a damn good shot.

0:37:34 > 0:37:35'And you know what?

0:37:35 > 0:37:39'We wouldn't be halfway here if it wasn't for Callum and his mates.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42'I can't believe how he's stepped up to the job

0:37:42 > 0:37:44'so I'm off to meet Callum's mum Lisa,

0:37:44 > 0:37:48'to find out a bit more about our star boy.'

0:37:50 > 0:37:54- Hello, Lisa.- Hello!- How are ya? Can I come in?

0:37:54 > 0:37:55- Yeah, come in.- Cool, lovely!

0:37:56 > 0:37:59I've been hanging out with Callum for a couple of days.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02- He loves the outside, doesn't he? - Oh, yes, yeah.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04He's a very outdoor person.

0:38:04 > 0:38:07And he gets on with the kids very well from Fosseway, as well.

0:38:07 > 0:38:13Oh, yes, yeah. We go to the hospice that Brandon used go to.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16He loves all the disabled children. He gets on with them brilliantly.

0:38:16 > 0:38:17He'll do anything for 'em.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19Was Callum very close to his brother?

0:38:19 > 0:38:23Yep, very, very close, and his brother loved him dearly.

0:38:23 > 0:38:28And is that when the problem started to sort of...

0:38:28 > 0:38:29It got worse after then, yeah.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31Er... And with the bullying,

0:38:31 > 0:38:35it got worse cos people made fun of him because his brother had passed away,

0:38:35 > 0:38:37but he's a lot more calmer than what he was before.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40And he spends time with his grandparents, doesn't he?

0:38:40 > 0:38:43Yeah, he helps do their garden.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46He used to get bored quite quickly of doing the garden

0:38:46 > 0:38:50but since this started, he's been, "Oh, I'll do your garden."

0:38:50 > 0:38:54He's even offered my next-door neighbours to help with the garden.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57He can come round and mow my lawn if he wants!

0:39:04 > 0:39:07- Morning, Richard.- Morning, Joe.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09- Are you feeling positive today? - I am.

0:39:09 > 0:39:14We've got to tear into this and get this hard landscaping done.

0:39:14 > 0:39:18Yeah, well, it's a bit drier today. It's not raining yet.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21The forecast isn't too bad, compared to yesterday,

0:39:21 > 0:39:25so we'll do cement work today - get all the cement work done, yeah?

0:39:25 > 0:39:28The paving and the strawberry in the middle of the paving area.

0:39:28 > 0:39:30That is... We've got to get it done.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33If we don't get it today, we ain't complete.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40'Two days left and the boys' to-do list is massive...

0:39:43 > 0:39:48'..with Joe's's fiddly strawberry mosaic and the fire pit to complete,

0:39:48 > 0:39:51'a huge amount of paving and the bricked patio to be laid.

0:39:53 > 0:39:57'Then the fountain needs fixing, the stage needs finishing

0:39:57 > 0:40:01'and hundreds of plants need planting. Worrying!

0:40:01 > 0:40:06'But it's the hard-landscaped areas that are causing us most grief.

0:40:06 > 0:40:11'Joe's designed the garden to be super-accessible for the kids from both schools

0:40:11 > 0:40:14'and, for wheelchairs, that means a lot of paving.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18'We really need a period of dry weather for the boys to crack it.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21'And how long have we got till Claire gets to see her garden?'

0:40:21 > 0:40:24- Phil, Anneka.- How are ya?- Good.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26Keep off the top soil. I'm coming over. I'm coming over!

0:40:26 > 0:40:28Into my arms! Yes!

0:40:29 > 0:40:31- Don't the plants look... - The sun is shining!

0:40:31 > 0:40:35They're so happy, the plants, aren't they? They look as if they've settled in.

0:40:35 > 0:40:38Yeah, things are, sort of, finally drying out.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41That end looks almost finished. Fantastic.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44It's a massive day today, to be honest, but, er...

0:40:44 > 0:40:47- Feeling good. Feeling good. - What do you want to do?

0:40:47 > 0:40:50- You know there's going to be this big mosaic strawberry?- Yeah.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53We've got some tiles that need smashing up.

0:40:53 > 0:40:57- But don't pulverise them into tiny pieces...- Like the floor on Pompeii?

0:40:57 > 0:41:02- Slightly big pieces.- I'm thinking, night down the Greek restaurant.

0:41:02 > 0:41:03Yeah, that's it. Yeah, OK.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06Are you two taking this seriously or not? You're always dancing!

0:41:06 > 0:41:08We can't believe it's sunny!

0:41:08 > 0:41:10- We're just so happy.- Get on with it!

0:41:15 > 0:41:18'Joe wants me to get cracking - literally -

0:41:18 > 0:41:21'so me and the boys get smashing.'

0:41:21 > 0:41:23Right, boys, we need to smash some tiles.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25Now, we don't want to do it too hard

0:41:25 > 0:41:28because then they're going to go into too-little pieces.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Go on. There you go. Look at that. Perfect.

0:41:32 > 0:41:34Ready?

0:41:34 > 0:41:37Lovely. Oh, they're coming out... Oh, perfect.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40So, boys, you've had a little look at the garden.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43- Do you think it looks like it's going to be done in time?- No.

0:41:43 > 0:41:46- You don't reckon? You still think lots of work to be done?- Yeah.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49Oh, beauty! That's done.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51Come on, let's go.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55'With the strawberry in Strawberry Square

0:41:55 > 0:41:59'really starting to take shape, I want to catch up with Claire.

0:41:59 > 0:42:02'Her first glimpse of the garden is now only a day away.'

0:42:03 > 0:42:08So though you haven't seen the garden, you've still been coming in and working with the kids.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10Have you've noticed a change in atmosphere?

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Yeah, it's quite interesting

0:42:12 > 0:42:16because none of the kids have told me anything that they've been doing out there.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18It's all like, "Ssh, Claire's around."

0:42:18 > 0:42:21They're quite enjoying that secret, as well.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24Mm. And have you noticed anything in their behaviour?

0:42:24 > 0:42:28- Do they seem different in any way at all?- Really tired!

0:42:28 > 0:42:29ANNEKA CHUCKLES

0:42:29 > 0:42:33They've all been really exhausted. But so excited.

0:42:33 > 0:42:37I mean, the thing I've been so struck by

0:42:37 > 0:42:39is how the children have, er,

0:42:39 > 0:42:43absolutely embraced it and got involved in it.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47I mean, they've done the heavy-duty work and lifting, shovelling.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51- You know, they've really been involved.- Because it's OUR garden.

0:42:54 > 0:42:55Nice one.

0:42:55 > 0:42:58'It's not only Callum who's blossomed since this all began.

0:42:58 > 0:43:02'His classmate Deana has also come right out of her shell.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05'A week ago, she wouldn't even be filmed.

0:43:05 > 0:43:09'Now she's ready to make her mark on the garden shed.' Brilliant!

0:43:14 > 0:43:15- Yeah, man!- Oh, D!

0:43:24 > 0:43:29That was a really extraordinary morning, cos I saw D transform herself

0:43:29 > 0:43:31from a very reluctant, surly person

0:43:31 > 0:43:34to someone who is loving every second of it.

0:43:34 > 0:43:36Yeah, I mean, I think this whole process

0:43:36 > 0:43:39has been absolutely fantastic for Deana.

0:43:39 > 0:43:43She's got herself really stuck in, really involved and she's gained an awful lot out of it.

0:43:43 > 0:43:47She has difficulties with emotions - they're up and down, all over the place -

0:43:47 > 0:43:50but something like this, where she feels really valued

0:43:50 > 0:43:53and feels she's good at something is really important for her.

0:43:53 > 0:43:55So, yeah, she's had a great morning.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01'The more time I spend here, the more I see

0:44:01 > 0:44:06'how much these kids want to express themselves, but just don't know how.

0:44:06 > 0:44:10'After chatting with Callum's mum, I realised these kids' stories are complex -

0:44:10 > 0:44:13'not just a simple matter of good or bad.'

0:44:13 > 0:44:16One of the main reasons why Callum got bullied

0:44:16 > 0:44:17was because his brother died.

0:44:17 > 0:44:20What's that all about?

0:44:20 > 0:44:23His brother died and people bullied him...

0:44:23 > 0:44:24Because of that.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27And I think that really sort of upset him.

0:44:27 > 0:44:31It would, you know. Unbelievable! It really just shocked me

0:44:31 > 0:44:36and she sort of said that's where the problems started a little bit.

0:44:36 > 0:44:40And you can kind of understand that a little bit.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43The whole world falls to pieces and you get bullied for it.

0:44:43 > 0:44:46What's the matter with people?

0:44:46 > 0:44:50- He wants to be a garden designer. - Yeah?- She said he came home

0:44:50 > 0:44:55got out a sheet of paper or something and was designing everything.

0:44:55 > 0:44:59He just comes home full of what he's doing here.

0:45:00 > 0:45:04Back in the garden, it's incredibly busy.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11No rain means lots of work.

0:45:11 > 0:45:14Bricks are getting laid, paving's going down

0:45:14 > 0:45:17and Annie's getting arty on the climbing wall.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21We've found the perfect job for Phil -

0:45:21 > 0:45:24the gravel foundation under the bricked area needs levelling

0:45:24 > 0:45:25and Tuffers is lending a foot!

0:45:25 > 0:45:29- Can we have a New Yorker? - New Yorker.

0:45:31 > 0:45:34You're better at that than barrowing and shovelling.

0:45:34 > 0:45:36There are certain things you are cut out for.

0:45:38 > 0:45:42Phil stops thinking Strictly and gets stuck into learning some basic

0:45:42 > 0:45:45bricklaying skills - well, very basic.

0:45:45 > 0:45:47Is there no end to the man's talents?

0:45:53 > 0:45:55I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted, honestly.

0:45:55 > 0:45:59Two hours, it was a good two hours smashed out on that block paving.

0:45:59 > 0:46:01- The guy's doing all the little cuts.- I know,

0:46:01 > 0:46:04he's more into the craftsmanship stage of the whole job, isn't he,

0:46:04 > 0:46:08and the attention to detail. Really getting in there and, you know,

0:46:08 > 0:46:12even though the build has been an absolute nightmare, they have still...

0:46:12 > 0:46:15it's about quality, the legacy of the whole garden.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18This is not just for show or to last into next week.

0:46:18 > 0:46:20- It is going to last forever. - It is indeed.

0:46:20 > 0:46:24But then, inevitably, it starts to pour down -

0:46:24 > 0:46:28making working conditions really horrible.

0:46:28 > 0:46:33But at least there's one happy voice on site. Go for it, Phil!

0:46:33 > 0:46:38# I'm singing in the rain Just singing in the rain

0:46:38 > 0:46:41# What a wonderful feeling

0:46:41 > 0:46:45# I'm happy again. #

0:46:48 > 0:46:52That's our last full work day over. And we're nowhere near finishing.

0:46:52 > 0:46:58Paving, fountains, paths, plants - all need work doing.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00Tomorrow morning's going to be manic.

0:47:06 > 0:47:10We've now got five hours to get the garden good enough to show Claire.

0:47:12 > 0:47:16The idea's for her to see it on her own before the crowds descend

0:47:16 > 0:47:18for our grand opening day.

0:47:18 > 0:47:21But it's been bucketing down all night

0:47:21 > 0:47:23and our first job is bailing out.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27And the deliveries are still coming. These massive logs

0:47:27 > 0:47:30are the seating round the fire pit.

0:47:30 > 0:47:34Moving them against the clock on our slippery site is going to be fun!

0:47:34 > 0:47:36Watch this geezer behind you, Joe. Coming through.

0:47:36 > 0:47:39That's the technique, Joe. You just lift it on his shoulder.

0:47:41 > 0:47:45- Watch yourself here. You got me a job.- He's got another little one.

0:47:45 > 0:47:48- Back. That's better, Tuffers. - That's better, son.

0:47:48 > 0:47:50Look at them. Look at that. Oh, my God!

0:47:53 > 0:47:54Don't drop the log!

0:47:54 > 0:47:59UNCONTROLLABLE LAUGHTER

0:48:03 > 0:48:08LAUGHTER

0:48:11 > 0:48:12Oh, my God!

0:48:14 > 0:48:18Oh, my God! Well done!

0:48:23 > 0:48:25Though we're not going to totally finish today,

0:48:25 > 0:48:28we want the garden to look great for Claire -

0:48:28 > 0:48:30and with all the rain delays

0:48:30 > 0:48:32we're having to pack a full day's work into a single morning.

0:48:34 > 0:48:37Joe's ordered a sedum eco-roof for the stage.

0:48:37 > 0:48:41But it's only just going up and he's not messing around.

0:48:41 > 0:48:44- White side up.- White side up?

0:48:44 > 0:48:48With turf, it's green side up.

0:48:51 > 0:48:56The eco-roof's a great idea - low maintenance, hard wearing

0:48:56 > 0:49:00and with different varieties of sedum it'll change colour throughout the year.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02Lovely.

0:49:05 > 0:49:09- Two-thirds there.- Two-thirds there, that is what they say.

0:49:09 > 0:49:13Two-thirds, that means there is a third to go and it is now one o'clock.

0:49:13 > 0:49:17We have got to be finished in three hours. It's now insanely busy on site.

0:49:19 > 0:49:23The countdown's on. Only two hours left.

0:49:23 > 0:49:25And now it's all about planting, planting,

0:49:25 > 0:49:29laying gravel on the paths and more planting.

0:49:31 > 0:49:35- Does this need to be the other way round?- It does, actually.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37He's thinking for himself!

0:49:40 > 0:49:43But surprise, surprise. This is the summer of 2012

0:49:43 > 0:49:47and sure enough, the wet stuff makes an unwanted return.

0:49:47 > 0:49:51'But will rain stop play? No chance!'

0:50:01 > 0:50:04We're almost ready to show Claire her garden

0:50:04 > 0:50:08after ten days of seriously hard work.

0:50:08 > 0:50:11Against the odds, the team have done an amazing job.

0:50:11 > 0:50:13But there are still a few things to complete -

0:50:13 > 0:50:17the stage with its wheelchair ramp for access needs finishing

0:50:17 > 0:50:20and Joe wants to put in more trees and plants.

0:50:20 > 0:50:25Crack all that and we will take this garden from passable to perfection.

0:50:28 > 0:50:31Last week, we gave a shout out to you, the great British public

0:50:31 > 0:50:33to come down and help us finish off.

0:50:33 > 0:50:37But before we reveal how many of you came down to give us a hand at Strawberry Square

0:50:37 > 0:50:39there's a very special lady

0:50:39 > 0:50:43who deserves to see how we've done so far.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46My gosh!

0:50:48 > 0:50:52- There's your garden.- Isn't it beautiful? Thank you so much.

0:50:52 > 0:50:55You like it then? Come on, let's go in.

0:50:59 > 0:51:02- Oh!- Yeah. We had to put a strawberry in Strawberry Square.

0:51:02 > 0:51:04Ain't that lovely?

0:51:08 > 0:51:12I never ever... This was never in my dream. At all.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15This was... This is so much. Thank you.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20Well, if this is Claire's reaction, we can't wait to see

0:51:20 > 0:51:25how the community respond on our finishing day and grand opening.

0:51:29 > 0:51:32Because of the truly shocking summer we've had weather-wise,

0:51:32 > 0:51:36it's actually been four months since we gave a sneak preview

0:51:36 > 0:51:38of the garden to Claire.

0:51:38 > 0:51:42We're on our way back to Bristol and Strawberry Square for one final push

0:51:42 > 0:51:45and hopefully a sunny grand opening.

0:51:46 > 0:51:51Last week, we asked you to come along and help finish off the garden

0:51:51 > 0:51:53and we're hoping you're going to turn up in force.

0:51:53 > 0:51:57Joe's on site early to assess how much has survived its drenching.

0:51:57 > 0:52:00These raised beds are looking good.

0:52:00 > 0:52:03This was the boggiest part of the garden, this corner,

0:52:03 > 0:52:06so I think we'll get some trees in there today.

0:52:08 > 0:52:10Joe's to-do list is still pretty long for us -

0:52:10 > 0:52:14there are trees to plant, hanging baskets to refresh

0:52:14 > 0:52:16and the stage to finish.

0:52:16 > 0:52:19- It looks fantastic.- Hello. - Hello, mate.- What do you think?

0:52:19 > 0:52:21You know what, the last time you saw it, it was a quagmire.

0:52:21 > 0:52:26And it's now a fully grown-up rather beautifully tended garden.

0:52:26 > 0:52:30These here, look, it's overcrowded with broccoli and cabbages.

0:52:30 > 0:52:34I am surprised because the weather we had doing it was just extreme, wasn't it?

0:52:34 > 0:52:38- It didn't stop raining.- Have you seen the forecast for today?- Rain.

0:52:39 > 0:52:42But once again you haven't let us down.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48Wow, look! Here's the queue to help. Hello, young man. how are you?

0:52:48 > 0:52:51Thanks for coming. Look at the face. Let's have a look. Put that up.

0:52:51 > 0:52:54What's that? The Flowerpot Gang.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57Hi. Thank you so much for coming. You have brought your gloves.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01- Hello, my love.- Hello, Phil. - You've got your cake,

0:53:01 > 0:53:05you got welly boots, little kneepads.

0:53:05 > 0:53:07- We've come from West London. - What made you come down?

0:53:07 > 0:53:11We saw the first programme and Ed said, "When are we going to help?"

0:53:12 > 0:53:16As well as planting there's also a little weeding to be done.

0:53:16 > 0:53:20So how come you're down here today my darling?

0:53:20 > 0:53:24- It's my birthday.- Is it? Happy birthday!

0:53:24 > 0:53:28The day before yesterday, I saw the programme and thought why not?

0:53:32 > 0:53:35With cleaning up the planters and refreshing the baskets,

0:53:35 > 0:53:39the volunteers are making short work of Joe's to-do list.

0:53:39 > 0:53:43- Where do you want it, mate? - Over there, where that dead tree's coming out from.

0:53:43 > 0:53:45Oh, they've got it out already.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48And these birches are ideal for the damp ground

0:53:48 > 0:53:50because they like most soils.

0:53:52 > 0:53:56'Whilst I'm out getting my hands dirty planting this thing,'

0:53:56 > 0:53:59Anneka wants the school children and volunteers

0:53:59 > 0:54:00to make some flowers for the stage.

0:54:00 > 0:54:03And there's a bit of a surprise for our budding artists.

0:54:03 > 0:54:07Look at this everybody. The Flowerpot Gang. Who are you?

0:54:07 > 0:54:12I'm Emily. Hi. I live in Clifton and I'm studying to be a doctor

0:54:12 > 0:54:14at the University of Bristol.

0:54:14 > 0:54:17What made you suddenly get all culinary?

0:54:17 > 0:54:19I really like baking and do it quite a lot

0:54:19 > 0:54:21but I just wanted to come and join in.

0:54:21 > 0:54:23And while I'm in cake heaven,

0:54:23 > 0:54:25Phil's got a chance to catch up with Callum.

0:54:25 > 0:54:27So how has the garden been going then, mate?

0:54:27 > 0:54:30- OK?- Yeah?- Yeah. - You been enjoying it?- Yeah.

0:54:30 > 0:54:34- What have you been doing out here?- Gardening!- Gardening!

0:54:34 > 0:54:38Yes, this gardening lark really seems to be giving a lot of pleasure -

0:54:38 > 0:54:41even if not everyone's green fingered.

0:54:41 > 0:54:44I'm a truck driver on holiday this week.

0:54:44 > 0:54:47And watched the programme the other night at Sunderland

0:54:47 > 0:54:49and volunteered to come up today and help.

0:54:49 > 0:54:53- So you have come down on holiday? - Mmm.- That's fantastic!

0:54:53 > 0:54:57- Anneka's finished her flowery creations.- Excellent!

0:54:57 > 0:54:59The silver birch trees have all been planted

0:54:59 > 0:55:03and the hanging baskets refilled with strawberry plants.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05There's just time for a quick clean down

0:55:05 > 0:55:07before our grand opening.

0:55:07 > 0:55:10- It's brilliant, isn't it? - Absolutely cracking.- Very pleased.

0:55:15 > 0:55:19Four months ago, the site was a neglected wasteland.

0:55:20 > 0:55:24Now it's a green oasis where kids can learn and grown.

0:55:25 > 0:55:29And no one's happier than Callum who worked so hard.

0:55:29 > 0:55:31'Mum Lisa sees him in a new light.'

0:55:31 > 0:55:35- He's done great work, hasn't he? - Brilliant. Very proud of Callum.

0:55:35 > 0:55:39It was Claire's dream to give the kids from both schools

0:55:39 > 0:55:40a place to thrive.

0:55:40 > 0:55:44As well as gardening, they can have outdoor lessons and play.

0:55:44 > 0:55:47And although our old enemy the rain is back,

0:55:47 > 0:55:49we're determined not to let it dampen our spirits.

0:55:52 > 0:55:56We would like to thank all of you for coming and making this garden a reality.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59It's absolutely wonderful. We are very proud of it.

0:55:59 > 0:56:02- We hope that you are too. - Thank you so much everyone.

0:56:02 > 0:56:05Give yourselves a big cheer.

0:56:05 > 0:56:09And it's thanks to Claire's determination that we were able to build the garden.

0:56:09 > 0:56:12When we started this project, it was just a dream.

0:56:12 > 0:56:16And the volunteers today that have come and brought cakes and plants,

0:56:16 > 0:56:21- wow, you have really touched us. Thank you, everyone.- Well done.

0:56:24 > 0:56:26Callum!

0:56:26 > 0:56:28Callum!

0:56:28 > 0:56:32Oh! Oh! Look at this.

0:56:32 > 0:56:37- Oh, Callum, thank you. - Thank you, Callum.

0:56:37 > 0:56:41The main thing is, are you and your mates happy with the garden?

0:56:41 > 0:56:45- Yeah. Yeah, we are all happy with the garden.- Marks out of ten?

0:56:45 > 0:56:47About nine?

0:56:48 > 0:56:50That's good enough for us!

0:56:50 > 0:56:53We'll take that.

0:56:53 > 0:56:57And for Callum there's just one more little Flowerpot Gang tradition.

0:56:57 > 0:57:00CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:05 > 0:57:08If you've been inspired by this programme,

0:57:08 > 0:57:10why don't you form your own Flowerpot Gang

0:57:10 > 0:57:13and transform a piece of waste land in your neighbourhood?

0:57:13 > 0:57:17You'll be absolutely amazed at what can be achieved.

0:57:21 > 0:57:23Next week, we're in East London

0:57:23 > 0:57:25just a stone's throw from the Olympic Stadium.

0:57:25 > 0:57:27Here, there are kids like nine-year-old Jaiden,

0:57:27 > 0:57:30who are desperate to get outside

0:57:30 > 0:57:33and learn about nature and growing vegetables.

0:57:33 > 0:57:36This book is quite useful actually

0:57:36 > 0:57:38because it shows you how to do stuff,

0:57:38 > 0:57:41it shows you what you need.

0:57:41 > 0:57:45We're going to create a garden for Jaiden and his community

0:57:45 > 0:57:47on one of the unused spaces on their estate.

0:57:47 > 0:57:51It's usually under lock and key, so no residents can ever get into this

0:57:51 > 0:57:52but we're going to change that.

0:57:52 > 0:57:56But it's not all hard work - there's still room for a bit of fun.

0:57:56 > 0:57:59Flowerpot Garden's welly wang!

0:57:59 > 0:58:01It's good to know Tuffers has an advantage over Joe

0:58:01 > 0:58:05who's damaged his arm playing football.

0:58:05 > 0:58:07- On the line.- No way, on the line!

0:58:09 > 0:58:11Come on, Tuffers!

0:58:11 > 0:58:15And Jaiden and the locals really throw themselves into the project.

0:58:15 > 0:58:16I'm loving this!

0:58:16 > 0:58:21But the East London garden still isn't quite finished.

0:58:21 > 0:58:25We'd like you to come on Friday and help us with the final touches.

0:58:25 > 0:58:29And join us in celebrating the garden's grand opening.

0:58:29 > 0:58:31For details go to...
