0:00:00 > 0:00:02- A warm welcome to Garddio A Mwy.

0:00:02 > 0:00:07- It was nice to see some rain - last week after such a dry period.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10- This garden definitely needed it.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14- It's incredible how the plants - and flowers reacted...

0:00:14 > 0:00:17- ..to what little rain came.

0:00:18 > 0:00:23- This week, I wander once more...

0:00:23 > 0:00:26- ..to help out - in a garden in Caerphilly.

0:00:26 > 0:00:31- Meinir enjoys - a visual feast in Trefriw.

0:00:31 > 0:00:36- And Sioned gets expert help - to create a seasonal hanging basket.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39- All that and more on Garddio A Mwy.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58- With the Chelsea Flower Show - starting tomorrow...

0:00:59 > 0:01:02- ..I've been inspired - to take on an annual task...

0:01:02 > 0:01:05- ..named after - the iconic flower show.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06- The Chelsea chop.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10- But what exactly - is the Chelsea chop?

0:01:10 > 0:01:15- If I come over to the phlox, - it's a fairly simple process.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17- It's a technique...

0:01:17 > 0:01:22- ..that controls the flowering - of perennial plants.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26- What I do - is cut them down by a third or so...

0:01:26 > 0:01:29- ..and then leave a few to flower.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33- When they have finished, - these will then continue to grow.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38- Some people prune them down - by about half...

0:01:38 > 0:01:42- ..but I haven't got the heart - to do that.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46- I want them to flower - and to make use of them.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50- But rather than have them - flower at the same time...

0:01:50 > 0:01:52- ..and result in long, tall stems...

0:01:53 > 0:01:57- ..that will probably require - some form of support...

0:01:57 > 0:02:00- ..I prefer cutting a few stems...

0:02:00 > 0:02:04- ..which the other stems - will then protect.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06- I'll start with these.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10- I make the cut - just above a pair of leaves.

0:02:16 > 0:02:21- What will happen, - by cutting in a spot like that...

0:02:22 > 0:02:26- ..the lateral stems will grow...

0:02:26 > 0:02:28- ..and give me more flowers.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32- The shrub will also grow - so I'll have even more flowers.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36- They may be a bit smaller, - but they'll also last longer.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38- And that's it.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41- Try the Chelsea chop.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46- Next, Meinir visits a nursery...

0:02:46 > 0:02:50- ..that is used to exhibiting - at all these major shows...

0:02:50 > 0:02:52- ..including Chelsea.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- I remember thinking - how pretty I was...

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- ..when I held these to my ears - as a child.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- But these aren't earrings - for little girls...

0:03:06 > 0:03:10- ..but that classic garden flower, - the fuchsia.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15- Fuchsias come - in an array of colours.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17- To give you some idea...

0:03:18 > 0:03:22- ..Roualeyn Nursery in Trefriw - grows a spectacular range.

0:03:22 > 0:03:28- Today, I'm being given a tour - by nursery owner Gwyneth Jones.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32- How did you get started - with fuschias?

0:03:32 > 0:03:35- I'm going back many years now.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- I won't say how many.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42- My husband started - with half a dozen small plants.

0:03:43 > 0:03:48- He had a very small greenhouse - on the land.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- He did well, and they grew.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55- He'd give some away - to friends and relatives.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00- We gave up our old milk round - to focus on the fuchsias.

0:04:01 > 0:04:02- It all grew from there.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07- The old greenhouse is long gone, - and has been replaced by these.

0:04:07 > 0:04:12- From starting with a few plants, - as a hobby, to all intents...

0:04:12 > 0:04:15- ..the business - is now very successful.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20- Roualeyn is well-known - as a creator of new cultivars.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25- They have won numerous awards, - including several golds at Chelsea.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30- You're very busy as a business - at shows too.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35- From April onwards, - there's a show almost every weekend.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38- It gets easier - when you've done it for a while.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41- But we weren't sure when we started.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44- We didn't start with major shows.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46- We went to small local shows.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51- We'd go to Llanrwst, - Denbigh and Anglesey.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57- We were so delighted when we got - our first gold at a major show.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00- We weren't going to stop after that.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- Most fuschias are native - to Central and South America.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09- Crossing the 97 natural species...

0:05:09 > 0:05:13- ..has yielded over 6,000 varieties - in Britain alone.

0:05:13 > 0:05:19- Over 400 of those - can be seen at Roualeyn today.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23- In order to create new cultivars...

0:05:23 > 0:05:28- ..plants are chosen carefully - and sent off to be cross-pollinated.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32- They then make cuttings - to grow more of that variety.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35- That's how the process works.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39- You have hybrids here - but so many different ones.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42- The standard types, - and ones for hanging baskets.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45- If you had to choose one...

0:05:45 > 0:05:48- ..which one would be your favourite?

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- My favourite type is the species.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- The original - that grows in all its glory...

0:05:54 > 0:06:00- ..especially one called Procumbens, - which comes from New Zealand.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02- It flowers vertically...

0:06:02 > 0:06:06- ..and I can't begin - to describe the colours.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08- It's so pretty.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13- A new variety of fuchsia - is being launched at Chelsea...

0:06:13 > 0:06:14- ..the Sarcoma UK.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17- Sarcoma is a type of cancer.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22- The fuchsia has been named after - the charity that supports sufferers.

0:06:22 > 0:06:27- Money from the sales - will go to the Sarcoma UK charity.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30- By the first Monday at Chelsea...

0:06:30 > 0:06:33- ..the fuschia will have gone - from Trefriw to London.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36- Fingers crossed, it'll look good.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38- The very best of luck to you.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40- It's a very nice idea.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49- We tend to take our health - for granted sometimes.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- That stepping out - into the garden...

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- ..is one of the most natural, - and easiest, things to do.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59- But what if making a trellis - to support beans...

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- ..or picking up a fork, - or even standing up...

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- ..were too painful to even consider?

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- For years now, that's been - the challenge facing the owner...

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- ..of a garden in Caerphilly - that I visited last week.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18- Meet Joe and Iona Coles.

0:07:19 > 0:07:24- In 2012, Iona was diagnosed - with fibromyalgia.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29- It's a long-term condition - causing widespread chronic pain...

0:07:29 > 0:07:31- ..and also affects her mobility.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- My challenge today - is to enable Iona...

0:07:35 > 0:07:40- ..to take up something that's been - missing from her life for years.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42- That's gardening.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- With her husband Joe's help...

0:07:47 > 0:07:52- ..I hope to rekindle - the gardening flame in Iona's life.

0:07:53 > 0:07:54- Good morning, Iona!

0:07:55 > 0:07:56- Good morning!

0:07:56 > 0:07:58- It's very nice to meet you.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00- Thanks very much.

0:08:01 > 0:08:02- This is a nice place.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03- This is a nice place.- - Isn't it lovely?

0:08:03 > 0:08:05- Your afternoon sanctuary.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07- We'll light the fire later.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09- Joe has been busy.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11- Joe has been busy.- - Getting the place ready!

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- Yes, very busy.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- You did garden here in the past.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- You did garden here in the past.- - Yes, I did.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21- We moved here five years ago.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24- Joe built beds to grow vegetables.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28- I loved it, - growing everything from seed.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- I started them off in the bedroom.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33- I started them off in the bedroom.- - On the window shelf.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35- Because it was so warm.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- Then into the greenhouse, - and out into the beds.

0:08:38 > 0:08:43- But the beds were low, - and my health is deteriorating.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47- It's hard for me - to physically get down to them...

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- ..to dig and plant and so on.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53- That's gone out of the window.

0:08:53 > 0:08:58- We've got rid of the beds - and planted clover instead of grass.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59- That's why we asked...

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- That's why we asked...- - ..me to come here.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04- To offer us suggestions.

0:09:04 > 0:09:09- I'd gathered that you had problems - coming out of the house...

0:09:09 > 0:09:13- ..and accessing the garden - and the greenhouse easily.

0:09:13 > 0:09:19- I've got a raised bed - that's been created specifically...

0:09:19 > 0:09:23- ..for people - who have problems bending down.

0:09:23 > 0:09:28- I've also got a few other things - that might be of interest to you.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31- But I need Joe's help.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33- Can I borrow him for a bit?

0:09:33 > 0:09:35- Can I borrow him for a bit?- - No problem.

0:09:40 > 0:09:45- You could visit a local timber yard - and make your own raised bed...

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- ..but there's a lot to be said - for buying a flat-pack.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51- For one thing...

0:09:51 > 0:09:54- ..it takes the stress - out of the whole process.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57- Well, that's the idea, at least.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00- The holes are all pre-drilled.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02- You've chosen the size.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06- You don't need a saw - because it's all pre-cut.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10- We'll see - how long it takes to assemble.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32- There we are, it's up.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35- That took 37 minutes.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38- A bit longer than I expected, - but it's up now...

0:10:38 > 0:10:43- ..and ready for the membrane, - the soil and the compost.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- After laying the membrane, - you need to add grit...

0:10:50 > 0:10:52- ..then topsoil.

0:10:52 > 0:10:57- The reason we're using topsoil, - and not filling it with compost...

0:10:57 > 0:11:00- ..is that compost tends to dry out.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04- Topsoil tends to retain moisture...

0:11:04 > 0:11:07- ..and it contains - a lot of nutrients.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11- But it doesn't contain stones, - so we'll mix it with the grit.

0:11:14 > 0:11:15- There we are.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19- The hard work is done - and we're ready to plant it up.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23- I hope Iona will come out - to help me after the break.

0:11:23 > 0:11:23- .

0:11:27 > 0:11:27- Subtitles

0:11:27 > 0:11:29- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:11:32 > 0:11:34- Welcome back.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38- The bed's ready, the soil's in - and we're ready to plant.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42- But to make it easier for Iona, - who finds it hard to move about...

0:11:43 > 0:11:46- ..I've brought - an interesting item with me.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- This is a one-legged stool.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- It was designed in Denmark...

0:11:53 > 0:11:56- ..by someone - who had back and knee problems.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58- They created this stool...

0:11:59 > 0:12:03- ..to allow you to get - your knees under a raised bed...

0:12:03 > 0:12:05- ..and to bend down.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09- Apparently, they come - in different heights.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- Lower ones for working on borders...

0:12:12 > 0:12:16- ..and higher ones - for beds like this.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- I think it's convenient, - and, hopefully, Iona will agree.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- Hello, Iona. Have you seen this?

0:12:26 > 0:12:28- Hello, Iona. Have you seen this?- - No, I hadn't noticed it.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33- I mentioned earlier that I had - something to make gardening easier.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35- We'll see what you think.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- We'll see what you think.- - Are you ready to catch me if I fall?

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- Put your stick there, - sit down and I'll sit next to you.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Maybe you should be behind me!

0:12:47 > 0:12:49- It's remarkably comfortable.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52- It is nice. - I thought it was comfy too.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55- It keeps your back straight.

0:12:55 > 0:12:56- It keeps your back straight.- - And my soles are flat.

0:12:57 > 0:12:58- It's comfy.

0:12:58 > 0:12:59- Will you be happy to use it?

0:12:59 > 0:13:00- Will you be happy to use it?- - Definitely.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03- We've also got these tools...

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- ..designed specifically - to make gardening easier.

0:13:07 > 0:13:08- We'll see what you think.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11- We've got a lot of things to plant.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- I've got a bush tomato plant.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18- That won't grow too high.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21- We've got another type as well.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25- It's a tumbler, - drooping over the edge.

0:13:25 > 0:13:26- That'll be pretty.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28- That'll be pretty.- - We'll plant those at the front.

0:13:29 > 0:13:30- What else have I got?

0:13:30 > 0:13:31- Courgettes.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33- Courgettes.- - Those can go at the front too.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- They'll droop over the edge as well.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40- Then I've got chard, Swiss chard.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- I've never grown chard before.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- I grew this last year.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47- It's good stuff.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49- It's colourful, if nothing else!

0:13:51 > 0:13:54- I left it a bit late - and it was rather tough.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57- Eat it at the right time.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00- We'll plant these as we go...

0:14:00 > 0:14:04- ..and see - what these ergonomic tools are like.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09- Tools with curved handles - put less strain on the ankle.

0:14:10 > 0:14:14- As we looked into ways to help Iona, - it soon became apparent...

0:14:14 > 0:14:19- ..is that there are many more tools - for gardeners with disabilities...

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- ..than five years ago, say.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25- From here, you seem comfortable.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27- Yes, I must say I am.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30- Gardening is hard work.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36- When you have a physical disability - or, in my case, fibromyalgia...

0:14:36 > 0:14:41- ..doing work like this - can cause muscular discomfort.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44- Because of the seat...

0:14:44 > 0:14:48- ..I feel that I have enough support.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- The bed is narrow, - so I'm not stretching.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55- Better still, using this - doesn't hurt my wrist.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59- Hopefully, it means - I'll be able to garden for longer.

0:14:59 > 0:15:00- Great. Thank you.

0:15:00 > 0:15:01- Great. Thank you.- - You're welcome.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05- It's nice to see you gardening.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- My name is Carys.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26- After retiring, - I thought I'd like an allotment.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29- My garden is a bit small.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- I retired - five and a half years ago...

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- ..and I've had the allotment - for four years.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38- I've enjoyed it, - but it is hard work.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42- Nothing beats growing your own food.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45- There's no taste like it.

0:15:47 > 0:15:52- I've had great strawberry crops, - without paying a penny for a plant.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55- They've all spread from next door.

0:15:56 > 0:15:57- Every one of them.

0:15:59 > 0:16:05- I'm going to cut the leaves, - because some are yellow...

0:16:05 > 0:16:07- ..and some have spots.

0:16:08 > 0:16:14- I don't want any diseases, - so I'll remove the yellow leaves.

0:16:16 > 0:16:22- I haven't put straw down before, - but it was very wet last year.

0:16:22 > 0:16:28- I'll try to keep the strawberries - off the ground this year...

0:16:28 > 0:16:30- ..in case it's wet when they fruit.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34- Hopefully, the straw - will do the job.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- This is the final job, picking.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47- I try to leave it - until the last minute, actually...

0:17:14 > 0:17:17- Buying one ready-made - may be convenient...
