0:00:01 > 0:00:03- Welcome back to Pont y Twr.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07- How are you getting on - in your vegetable garden?

0:00:07 > 0:00:11- Over the past week, - we've seen some remarkable growth.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13- The onions are coming along nicely.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16- The early potatoes - are almost in flower.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18- We'll soon be able to eat them.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22- But the beans over there - are ready to eat right now.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24- They'll be lovely with a salad.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28- That's what I'll be doing - in the kitchen later...

0:00:28 > 0:00:30- ..which is also almost ready.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33- While I prepare the food...

0:00:33 > 0:00:38- ..Elen Lloyd has tips for Sioned - on keeping fit while gardening.

0:00:39 > 0:00:44- Tom Griffiths helps Meinir - to build a dry stone wall.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51- And we look at some edible plants - in Eirlys Rhiannon's garden.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55- All this and more on Garddio A Mwy.

0:01:05 > 0:01:10- Among the flowers I use in my work - as a flower arranger for weddings...

0:01:10 > 0:01:14- ..one of my favourite - summer blooms are dahlias.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17- Five years ago, - I wouldn't have said that...

0:01:17 > 0:01:22- ..because they were out of fashion, - like hydrangeas and fuchsias.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26- But everything - comes back round into fashion.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29- Nowadays, dahlias are so popular.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34- That's why I've decided to turn - over half this border to dahlias.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- I hope to get about 30 plants here.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39- I've started already.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43- I've set up the twine frame - for them to grow through.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49- There are plenty left to plant, - so I'll prepare the soil over here.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56- I've put manure down - about a month ago...

0:01:56 > 0:01:59- ..so it has had - some time in the soil.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05- But it's been so dry recently - that some clumps still remain...

0:02:05 > 0:02:08- ..so I need to work it a little.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14- Dahlias are voracious plants.

0:02:15 > 0:02:21- I'm going to add - fish blood and bone fertilizer...

0:02:21 > 0:02:23- ..and some compost as well.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39- I'll start by spreading...

0:02:39 > 0:02:43- ..some fish blood - and bone fertilizer.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- About two handfuls along the row.

0:02:49 > 0:02:50- There we are.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- Then a fair amount of compost.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58- If you plant these individually...

0:02:58 > 0:03:03- ..you could add the fertilizer - directly into the hole.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08- But because I have so many to plant, - this method is much faster.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13- After mixing the fertilizer - and compost into the soil...

0:03:13 > 0:03:19- ..I set the dahlias out, - leaving 18 inches between them.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24- These have been growing in the - polytunnel for about five weeks.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26- They're now ready to go out...

0:03:26 > 0:03:29- ..because there's no longer - any danger of frost.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34- I've chosen a variety of colours...

0:03:34 > 0:03:39- ..but with more creams - and light pinks...

0:03:39 > 0:03:45- ..because they are more popular - for use at weddings and so on.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- One of the things - I like about dahlias...

0:03:48 > 0:03:50- ..is that the flowers are perfect.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53- Their shape is incredible.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57- They're so symmetrical - in both form and pattern.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00- It's hard to believe - that nature creates them.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04- They're so pretty - when you look at them up close.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- I've decided to plant Sweet Love...

0:04:10 > 0:04:11- ..Thomas Edison...

0:04:13 > 0:04:15- ..and Franz Kafka.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22- After planting them all, - I set willow posts around them.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24- Bamboo canes would also do fine.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29- I then run twine between them - to support the plants as they grow.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34- That's another frame finished.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39- Unfortunately, - something else likes dahlias too.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42- The earwig.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- They won't damage - the plant itself...

0:04:45 > 0:04:51- ..but they nest in among the petals, - and I don't want that.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55- There's a very simple way - to get rid of them.

0:04:55 > 0:05:01- Use a little straw - stuffed into a plastic pot...

0:05:01 > 0:05:03- ..to create a nest.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05- On a hot day like today...

0:05:06 > 0:05:09- ..the earwigs will go into this...

0:05:11 > 0:05:13- ..and stay there, hopefully.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15- Then, at the end of the day...

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- ..you can gather that and burn it...

0:05:18 > 0:05:23- ..or go for a walk to the end - of the field and release them there.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- I've had a busy few weeks - in the garden...

0:05:36 > 0:05:38- ..creating a new cooking area.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43- The final step was to finish - the cooking bench, which I've done.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- Since last time, - the tap is in place...

0:05:50 > 0:05:52- ..as well as the zinc panels...

0:05:53 > 0:05:58- ..and the gas bottle is connected - to the small stove on the worktop.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03- Four scaffolding poles - have been concreted into the ground.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07- Four further posts go into those.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- These will support the sail roof.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15- This will protect us - not only from the rain...

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- ..but also from the sun - on sweltering days like today.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- You don't have to use posts.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25- If you have a corner near a wall, - you could mount the roof from that.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28- You would need - a support pole in front.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32- These come in triangular, - rectangular and even round shapes.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34- These are very handy.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38- There's an attached eyelet - for you to hang it.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43- These sails are excellent - because they're resistant to rain.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48- They're also UV resistant, - so the colour won't fade.

0:06:49 > 0:06:54- Importantly, it's been injected - with a fire-retardant material...

0:06:54 > 0:06:57- ..which is great given that - it's going over a barbecue.

0:07:30 > 0:07:31- That's it.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34- The sail is in place at last.

0:07:35 > 0:07:36- Do you know what?

0:07:37 > 0:07:38- As it's such a sunny day...

0:07:38 > 0:07:43- ..I should make the most of the fact - that the kitchen is finished.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45- I've got some mackerel - in the fridge.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50- All I need is some salad, - so off I go to the vegetable patch.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00- I'm Eirlys Rhiannon - and I'm a gardener.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03- I work in gardens across Cardiff.

0:08:03 > 0:08:08- Back gardens and front gardens, - and I've a small garden of my own...

0:08:08 > 0:08:10- ..and an allotment.

0:08:13 > 0:08:19- Today's job is to start to cover - this wall with edible plants.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23- The first plant is Akebia Quinata.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- This will climb to cover the wall.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30- It will provide lovely flowers...

0:08:31 > 0:08:35- ..and if we have enough pollinators, - it will also bear fruit.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39- But to get fruit, - you also need a really hot summer.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45- The main crop I want to get - from this are the shoots.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49- They're like asparagus. You can - harvest them all year round.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55- I'm forming a small ditch - around the plant.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00- If we do have dry weather - and I need to water the plant...

0:09:00 > 0:09:03- ..I can aim the water - where I want it.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07- Around the plant - and straight towards the roots.

0:09:08 > 0:09:13- This is a Japanese quince, - which will bear fruit..

0:09:13 > 0:09:17- ..but I also chose it - for its wonderful flowers.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21- I can see that the fruit - is starting to develop.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25- I'll plant this - at an angle towards the wall.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30- It's just touching the wires - that I've put there.

0:09:30 > 0:09:35- I've chosen almost every type - of edible climbing plant I know of.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40- This is Passiflora, - the passion flower.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42- That bears fruit.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46- It doesn't have a strong taste, - but you can use it in jellies.

0:09:47 > 0:09:52- I also love edible flowers, - so I've planted honeysuckle.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- In a sunnier spot, - I've planted a kiwi.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02- It's a small form of kiwi that only - needs one plant to fertilize.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06- It produces a small fruit that you - can eat as if it was a sweet.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10- Finally, in the corner, - there's a vine.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13- I can't wait to get fruit from that.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16- That's the watering ditch.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19- And there we are.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29- Plenty of ideas from Eirlys there.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33- I'll ask Sioned to add - a flower or two to my salad later.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36- Right, it's time - to light the barbecue.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41- There's something exciting about - lighting the year's first barbecue.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46- I just hope it doesn't start to rain - now that I've said "barbecue".

0:10:51 > 0:10:51- .

0:10:57 > 0:10:57- Subtitles

0:10:57 > 0:10:59- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- Being outside in the fresh air - is good for you, of course.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11- Gardening - is also excellent exercise.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15- But I'm often guilty - of overdoing things...

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- ..and carrying heavy items - without thinking.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22- As a result, - I've hurt my back several times.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24- I'm very keen not to do so again.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27- If you've sprained an ankle...

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- ..hurt your back, or strained - a muscle while gardening...

0:11:32 > 0:11:36- ..you'll be interested - in what Elen Lloyd has to tell me.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Elen is a natural nutritionist - and a personal trainer.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- She is here to share tips - about injury-free gardening.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- I mentioned that I've had - problems with my back.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53- I hurt it quite badly - a few years ago.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56- I want to make sure - that doesn't happen again.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00- There are several exercises - that we can do.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04- Obviously, you need to strengthen - the back, and also the core.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08- What exercises would you suggest?

0:12:08 > 0:12:13- I'd suggest flexibility exercises, - especially making the back supple.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16- The mistake many people make...

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- ..is to go - from a fairly sedentary lifestyle...

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- ..and starting to run - or go to the gym...

0:12:23 > 0:12:28- ..without considering the importance - of becoming more supple first.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- I'm definitely guilty of that.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33- Shall we try a few moves?

0:12:34 > 0:12:36- Put your head on the blue cushion.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40- Put your feet together - and swing your legs across.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45- Slowly push the knees over - and back up...

0:12:46 > 0:12:48- ..and over to the other side.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51- It's important to do this - with the breathing rhythm.

0:12:52 > 0:12:57- We're working the diaphragm muscles, - which help with breathing.

0:12:57 > 0:13:02- Push the top hip over - to extend movement in the back.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04- You can feel it in the shoulder.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07- It works the whole way across.

0:13:07 > 0:13:08- And back up.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10- It's important to keep moving.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- This is a suppleness exercise, - not a stretching exercise.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17- Turn to face me.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20- Keep your head on the block.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23- Keep the knees and feet together...

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- ..and open outwards, - turning your head as well.

0:13:27 > 0:13:32- It's almost - like wringing a dishcloth.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37- Obviously, - we'd do this on both sides...

0:13:37 > 0:13:42- ..unless one side - is more tense than the other.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45- After doing that, - it's important that we stretch.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50- If you've been gardening for a long - time, the chest can become tense.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53- For this one, we'll go to the tree.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57- Turn your feet towards me.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01- Hold the tree at shoulder level...

0:14:02 > 0:14:05- ..and push against the branch - until you feel the extension.

0:14:06 > 0:14:11- As the tension eases, turn your feet - a bit more to increase the stretch.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14- Next, the strengthening exercises.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18- Keep the chin in and push up - as far as you feel comfortable.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24- If the base of the spine is very - tense, this will be enough for some.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27- As you get stronger, - you can push up further.

0:14:27 > 0:14:28- That hurts.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30- That hurts.- - That is tougher.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33- How often - would you do these exercises?

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- It's important to do them often.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40- Ten minutes a day - is better than an hour once a week.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- Make them a part of everyday life.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47- After gardening - and your back is a bit painful...

0:14:47 > 0:14:53- ..a nice stretch, hold it for three - minutes then carry on as normal.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56- Thanks for all that advice, Elen.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59- I promise to do those exercises.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02- I never want back pain again.

0:15:02 > 0:15:03- I never want back pain again.- - Excellent.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- I hope Meinir - has been listening to this advice.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10- She's being taught - to build a dry stone wall.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16- This is my favourite part - of this garden.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18- With a view like that...

0:15:18 > 0:15:22- ..it doesn't take much work - to make this a nice place to be.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26- But in every garden, - large or small...

0:15:26 > 0:15:29- ..there are some areas - that just don't work.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34- Today, I'm going to sort one area - that has posed problems for years.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39- This breeze-block wall was built...

0:15:39 > 0:15:44- ..as the most practical way - to separate us from the cattle.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47- But as there's hardly any - depth of soil...

0:15:47 > 0:15:52- ..it's impossible to grow anything - tall enough to hide the blocks.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55- Tom Griffiths has come here - to solve the problem.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- As you can see, Tom, - this is the spot.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- I've tried all kinds of things.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09- This ugly wall can still be seen.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11- How will stones help me?

0:16:12 > 0:16:16- I feel that natural materials - work in an area like this...

0:16:17 > 0:16:19- ..with lots of fields.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23- Farmers have been using stones - for centuries.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- It makes your garden - blend in with the surroundings.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31- The garden looks like a part - of the field beyond it, in a way.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- That sounds good to me.

0:16:33 > 0:16:38- The first job is to clear and mark - where we're putting the wall...

0:16:39 > 0:16:42- ..then grade the stones by size.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44- This one can go at the base.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48- The small stones - are as important as the big ones.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50- Does this count as a handy stone?

0:16:50 > 0:16:51- Does this count as a handy stone?- - Very handy.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55- Every good wall - needs a firm foundation.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59- The first stone - at the corner here.

0:17:00 > 0:17:05- That's the most important one, - in a way, for the footing.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14- Give me a hand with this one.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24- That fits nicely there.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26- Bring some of the small stones.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33- I'll put this pinner under it.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38- It's important - to pin them in place from the start.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40- You don't want movement at the base.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- It becomes clear to me - fairly early in the process...

0:17:46 > 0:17:51- ..is that all you really need - is to understand the basic steps.

0:17:51 > 0:17:52- You've got it!

0:17:53 > 0:17:55- You saw that straight away.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59- That'll go across.

0:17:59 > 0:18:00- Great.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06- That's magic!

0:18:06 > 0:18:08- You couldn't get better.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11- It's at the same level...

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- ..so locking it here will be easy.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20- At a corner and along the wall, - locking these joints is crucial.

0:18:20 > 0:18:26- By locking, you mean a stone on top - going across the joint.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29- It needs to put weight - on both these stones.
