0:02:21 > 0:02:25But now, my friends, you'll need to showcase all your talent

0:02:25 > 0:02:29and expertise to get far in this competition.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Which brings me beautifully to the subject of the judges,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35the people who are going to be watching you like hawks

0:02:35 > 0:02:39over the coming weeks. By royal appointment, Denise McAdam,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42and celebrity superstar hairdresser Alain Pichon.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- Denise, Alain, fabulous. - Wow! Welcome.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Here's the guys. Here's the judges.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Each week you will face three challenges

0:02:51 > 0:02:53designed to test your every skill.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57The first challenge, our judges want you to create a hairstyle

0:02:57 > 0:03:02incorporating a set element. This week's set element, a quiff.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06A thick lock of hair brushed upwards and backwards away

0:03:06 > 0:03:10from the forehead that must stand at least 7cm high.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Are we clear? Look at them. Lambs to the slaughter.

0:03:15 > 0:03:21Your models are ready. You have 1.5 hours. Your time starts now.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25In this challenge, the stylists have been allowed to choose

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- the type of hair they are working with...- Hello.- Hi.- I'm Dominika.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Let's get you dry.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32..and can use any method they want

0:03:32 > 0:03:35to make their quiffs reach the 7cm requirement.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39What I'm going to do is Danny Zuko-style.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42You'll see. It'll look so cool.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44I can definitely get 7cm of quiff

0:03:44 > 0:03:48out of this hair, so I'm really happy with that!

0:03:48 > 0:03:51As well as reaching the height, the quiffs should not look

0:03:51 > 0:03:53out of place with the rest of the hairstyle,

0:03:53 > 0:03:55and Denise and Alain will be judging

0:03:55 > 0:03:58how well the stylists achieve this balance.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01I do know how to do a quiff to my standard already.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03I'm quite nervous, I think.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05I'm nervous to see what everyone else does as well,

0:04:05 > 0:04:08and to see what the competition is, I think.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I told them my crude definition of a quiff,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14but give me the artistic definition.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Well, originally, it was made during the 18th century, Marie Antoinette.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20- That word is French, it's got to be - quiff.- That's right.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22- It was called "quaff" at the time. - Quaff!

0:04:22 > 0:04:25- You have a bit of a quiff yourself. - I've got a quiff?- Yes!

0:04:25 > 0:04:26- A variation of it.- I've got a quaff.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Why have you asked them to do a quiff today?

0:04:29 > 0:04:32It's got really good hairdressing techniques in it.

0:04:32 > 0:04:37Backcombing, folding, adding padding to get the height.

0:04:37 > 0:04:38What type of judges are you going to be?

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Are you going to go in with an iron fist?

0:04:40 > 0:04:43This is the first challenge, will you give them a bit of leeway,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45or go, "No, not 7cm. Get out!"

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It's got to be high.

0:04:47 > 0:04:52It needs to be completely integrated so we see a style from 360 degrees.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54We don't want someone to make a quiff up here

0:04:54 > 0:04:55and plonk it on the top of the head.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00I'm quite happy that it is a quiff.

0:05:00 > 0:05:05I do quite like them, so it's not something that is a challenge for me.

0:05:06 > 0:05:0816-year-old Kobi has just left school.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12He lives in Devon with his mum, sister and brothers.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Hair has influenced me a lot.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19My sister has sort of been my model for the whole of my years.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23You look like a model! We do photoshoots and stuff like that.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27I really, really want to be top dog. I want to win.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Don't you look good?

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Kobi is planning a polished quiff

0:05:31 > 0:05:34with two vertical rolls at the back.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37So, Kobi, what is your influence, what is your overall look?

0:05:37 > 0:05:42More of a fashion statement piece rather than an everyday sort of look.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46- Do you see it on a catwalk more than in a restaurant?- Yes, something like that, catwalk work, photography work.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49- You like statement in hair?- Yes.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Kobi is backcombing his model's hair

0:05:51 > 0:05:54to give it the volume he needs for his design.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57What I'm doing now is pushing the hair outwards

0:05:57 > 0:06:01and then getting a comb and making as much texture as I can

0:06:01 > 0:06:03just to build and help create the shape.

0:06:03 > 0:06:08He combs the hair down from the tips, causing it to tangle and knot.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12The knots form a pad or mesh at the roots, which gives the hair volume.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Amy is also using this technique to build her quiff.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20I think because I'm used to backcombing loads of people's hair,

0:06:20 > 0:06:22it comes dead quick and easy to me now.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Amy is a beautician from Middlesbrough

0:06:25 > 0:06:28who does her wedding hair at the weekends.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30I've been doing it for years for my friends.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32- Does that feel all right? - That feels lovely.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35I've got a close group of friends, we'll spend quite a lot of time together.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39She'll make me come round and do about eight styles on my hair.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Someone always ends up saying to me, "Amy, play with my hair,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44"do this, do that." So we all look exactly the same!

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Any plans a bridal-inspired quiff,

0:06:48 > 0:06:50with pin curls at the back.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52I think I might backcomb it a bit more,

0:06:52 > 0:06:56but I'm just trying to get the height to begin with before I pin it in.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59Amy is using a brush to backcomb, which does concern me.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04It is backcombing. She really needs use a tail comb. She just goes...

0:07:05 > 0:07:08..and all she creates is a mesh of nothing in the middle.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10She's not going to get the thickness and volume,

0:07:10 > 0:07:12and I'm concerned she's not going to reach the height.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16I want quite a lot of height with it.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18We've been set the limit of 7cm minimum,

0:07:18 > 0:07:21but I'm going to go a bit higher to make an impact.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Polish-born Dominika is the only stylist who's chosen a male model.

0:07:29 > 0:07:35I've been learning how to do it in on online videos.

0:07:35 > 0:07:36It cost me £3!

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Dominika moved to the UK from Poland nine years ago.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44I get lots of stuff from charity shops,

0:07:44 > 0:07:47something sparkly, colourful or weird.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50If you feel like treating yourself, just go to the pound shop!

0:07:52 > 0:07:56She's attempting a Teddy Boy-style quiff with a short back and sides.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01I know I'm just the one who is cutting the hair today,

0:08:01 > 0:08:05and it is the first challenge, so I thought, OK, I need to challenge myself,

0:08:05 > 0:08:09so I'm going to cut, and we will see if I risk it good or not.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14Dominika is using a classic barbering technique.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17By clippering the back and sides of her model's head,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19she'll emphasise the volume of the hair on top.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Does your hair grow quick? SHE LAUGHS

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Dominika has taken on the quiff as the way we all think about it,

0:08:25 > 0:08:27the Teddy Boy look.

0:08:29 > 0:08:30Back in the '50s,

0:08:30 > 0:08:33the Teddy Boy quiff became the hairstyle of rebellion.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Teddy Boys, I don't like them.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38I don't like their style of dress, it's just to prove what they are,

0:08:38 > 0:08:39and they're very ignorant.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42Back then it was the norm for men to have short hair,

0:08:42 > 0:08:46so when boys started to wear it long on top, it was seen as an outrage.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50Frankly, I don't know what to say. The boy's got me worried.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- Hi, Annie.- Hello. - This is looking interesting.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57How do you feel you're going to reach the height?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59I'm going to use some paddings.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02What I've been doing at home is cutting my paddings

0:09:02 > 0:09:07and bringing the hair forward, this section here, rolling it back.

0:09:09 > 0:09:1424-year-old Annie is from Leeds. She works as a critical care nurse.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17I'm just going to disconnect this, all right?

0:09:17 > 0:09:21I think doing hair is kind of like an outlet of switching off

0:09:21 > 0:09:23and just being able to enjoy it.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Friends I've made at work will go,

0:09:25 > 0:09:27"Do you mind just sticking my hair up for me, Annie?"

0:09:29 > 0:09:31There you are, free to go back to work.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Annie wants to create a '50s-style quiff,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37which back then was called an elephant's trunk.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44I'm using this padding here just to kind of create

0:09:44 > 0:09:46the kind of smoother roll.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49I want to make sure it looks good.

0:09:54 > 0:09:55I've done a quiff before,

0:09:55 > 0:09:59probably not so extravagant, on friends and family,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02and just random places.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Self-taught Marvin has been styling hair at home

0:10:06 > 0:10:08since he was a teenager.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10I think I'm very good at doing hair

0:10:10 > 0:10:15for the sheer fact that I was self-taught for everything I know.

0:10:15 > 0:10:20I think now it's time to take it to that next level where

0:10:20 > 0:10:23I get the recognition that I feel that I deserve.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29Marvin is attempting a waved quiff, which will be braided on one side.

0:10:30 > 0:10:36I'm going to take my fingers and start the base of my China bump.

0:10:37 > 0:10:42As I'm twisting, it's kind of creating a tension with the hair.

0:10:42 > 0:10:47Marvin twists his model's wet hair into knots called China bumps.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50When the bumps are dried and unravelled,

0:10:50 > 0:10:54the hair will spring up, giving him the volume needed for his quiff.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56It's better for the hood dryer.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59It's just a lot less stress than to stand there and dry it.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Just trying to save arm power, really.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03It's the first challenge,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05so I thought I'd go with something that I know,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08I know I can do and it's something that I enjoy to do as well.

0:11:08 > 0:11:1325-year-old Laura is a 1940s and '50s enthusiast.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16I get my inspiration from looking at old photos of my nan,

0:11:16 > 0:11:19my granny, from the '40s and '50s.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22A lot of my friends say that I'm a bit of a Disney character

0:11:22 > 0:11:25and perhaps a little bit in Cuckoo Land.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28I've got birds flying around my head.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Laura has designed a rockabilly quiff

0:11:31 > 0:11:33with a high ponytail at the back.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I'm giving it a '50s vibe, a high-top ponytail

0:11:35 > 0:11:37and then I'm going to do a really big barrel roll

0:11:37 > 0:11:38on the front of the hair.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40To make her barrel-shaped roll,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Laura takes backcombed hair stiffened with hairspray

0:11:44 > 0:11:47and rolls it by hand to the side of the forehead.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53That was nerve-racking! Cool, its curved really well.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01Laura isn't the only stylist using a rolling technique.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- So, what kind of quiff are you going to go for?- I've gone from the roll.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06I've gone for the height and then kind of rolled it,

0:12:06 > 0:12:08rather than the normal back quiff.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11I haven't actually practised this one. I'm winging it!

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Sit down, then.

0:12:14 > 0:12:1830-year-old Katie from Cheshire practices new styles on her two kids.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- I don't want it to hurt. - It's not going to hurt.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25- Ow!- I do the children's hair, mostly Daisy's hair, the eldest,

0:12:25 > 0:12:27because she's got long hair right down her back.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28You're all done, Dais.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Wow!

0:12:32 > 0:12:36I say it myself, but she does have the best hair in school. We do try!

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Katie plans an intricate up-do

0:12:38 > 0:12:40to show off her rolled quiff.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44So what made you take your quiff to a twist and a roll style?

0:12:44 > 0:12:46- What made you decide on that? - It's just more to look at.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Because if it's just brought back,

0:12:48 > 0:12:50you've only got the detail at the back.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53So, Katie and Laura, I'm the most concerned,

0:12:53 > 0:12:55because their quiff is looking like a roll.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58A quiff should come out right from the hairline,

0:12:58 > 0:13:02reach the right height. Here it's not going back, it's going sideways.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06When you look at it in profile, it's not looking like a quiff at all.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13I'm just feeling a bit on edge, bit tense about how it's all going.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18Ebuni lives in Essex and she's a part-time teacher.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I'm really, really competitive. I can't help it.

0:13:21 > 0:13:22Bottom out, good posture.

0:13:23 > 0:13:24Unlucky.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27As far as I'm concerned, there's no-one else involved,

0:13:27 > 0:13:28just me and the judges.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32I have to make sure that I'm the winner.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Ebuni's quiff will be finished with

0:13:34 > 0:13:36rolls at the back and braids at the side.

0:13:36 > 0:13:41This roll is just, it's not secure.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46It's still rolled, but it's just kind of hanging in the wind.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48I've had to get a few more pins and hopefully secure it

0:13:48 > 0:13:51so that it doesn't fall off her head again.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55Half an hour left, guys. 30 minutes.

0:13:57 > 0:14:02Marvin is unravelling his dry China bunts to form his waved quiff.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07Once I've taken this out, then I'll start working on my volume.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09I should have enough to work with.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13It's starting to take shape now.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18(Oh, come on. Calm down, calm down.)

0:14:19 > 0:14:22This bit is just getting a little bit fiddly.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24I'm struggling, because spraying hairspray on

0:14:24 > 0:14:27is making these little wispy hairs go really, really crispy.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29I've just got to make sure that that doesn't ruin

0:14:29 > 0:14:31the whole polished look.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33Do I like that? Do I not like that?

0:14:33 > 0:14:34Would you say that was a quiff?

0:14:34 > 0:14:38This is so elaborate, I don't even know what to call it beyond "quiff".

0:14:38 > 0:14:41At the moment, it's changing from my really polished look that I wanted.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43This is so not what I planned.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46I can see your hands are shaking a bit.

0:14:50 > 0:14:51Five minutes left.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54You have five minutes.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57There's so much pressure, so much pressure.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01How many clips do you think you've put in my hair?

0:15:01 > 0:15:02I don't know...

0:15:02 > 0:15:04OK, so you know the competition

0:15:04 > 0:15:06requires height of seven centimetres?

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Yeah. I think it is seven centimetres, isn't it?

0:15:10 > 0:15:11I might need to get a ruler.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Now, I've kind of got this...

0:15:18 > 0:15:21I'm just styling it now, just trying to get it secured.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Marvin, you should pull your jeans up - your bum's hanging out.

0:15:32 > 0:15:37That's it, guys, no more trimming or tweaking - you're done.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42He's got both ears - all good.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46- Shall we take a closer look? - I think so.- I can't wait.

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Let's go to Kobi first.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55You're quiff is looking fabulous with the Princess Leia-feel

0:15:55 > 0:15:57going through the back

0:15:57 > 0:15:59and you've got some fantastic height.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02I bet when Alain puts that comb in, there's seven centimetres there.

0:16:02 > 0:16:03My eye can tell me.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06- Perfect.- Perfect.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09Wasn't sure about the front blending with the rest,

0:16:09 > 0:16:12it feels a little bit alienated.

0:16:12 > 0:16:13What do you mean by that?

0:16:13 > 0:16:15I though that was the point - to make this stand out.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17It is standing out, it's not a problem.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20But as you can see, it doesn't blend with the rest.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22It looks like two different hairstyles.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Ebuni! What have you been up to?

0:16:30 > 0:16:33I'm going to test. Well...

0:16:34 > 0:16:36That's the main problem.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38You had a lot of hair there that you

0:16:38 > 0:16:40could have got that quiff quite easily.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- Plenty of hair. - How sharp is that?!

0:16:42 > 0:16:46Is it really jabbing into the top of our models' heads?

0:16:46 > 0:16:48She's not a turkey.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51You were spending a lot of time with this knot at the back.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53So much time on this little bit

0:16:53 > 0:16:55and not working on the task that you were given.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Let's take a look at what Dominika's been up to over here.

0:17:05 > 0:17:06Not sure it's reaching the height.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08You had the length, you could have pulled it up.

0:17:08 > 0:17:14This is the main characteristic that was required for this hairstyle.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16But I still like it.

0:17:16 > 0:17:17Thank you.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26Unfortunately, we're not there, uh?

0:17:26 > 0:17:29Feels like it's dropped a little bit, kind of the risk that

0:17:29 > 0:17:33you've taken in doing your own technique of twisting the hair.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Overall, she looks great, and that's important.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38- And you've done some fabulous techniques.- Thank you.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42Not sure if it's 100% a quiff.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44It feels more like a roll.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48You started with the right height, but maybe if you can see now...

0:17:48 > 0:17:49Not sure - no, it's not reaching.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52- Mm-hm.- So you're missing an inch.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02This is an example of a quiff made with a roll effect.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- Going to check now...- OK.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Well in the tens, surely.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08You have reached. Well done.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12I like the finish, I like the inspiration.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Be careful of all this little hair.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16I really feel this should be going up.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25It's great to see the perfect height is there - look.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28- So, I'm very happy with it. - Thank you very much.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31This is the perfect quiff, as far as the shape.

0:18:31 > 0:18:36Right from the back, beautiful even distribution of the shape.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Top marks. Well done, Annie. Fabulous work.

0:18:38 > 0:18:39Thank you very much.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48Overall, it could walk down an aisle for a wedding,

0:18:48 > 0:18:51but I just feel there's an element where you've lost the quiff,

0:18:51 > 0:18:54and it's just gone a little bit more beehivey at the back.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56It's because your backcombing was very weak,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59and I feel that you should have used a tail comb,

0:18:59 > 0:19:00not a back brush.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03You would have got a far better result.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06This is the area we should be reaching, we're far from it.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09Do that again and I'll push everything forward.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13I'm not sure this is exactly what we were looking for.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Congratulations, guys, on completing your first challenge!

0:19:21 > 0:19:22Fabulous work.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Go take a break in the prep room, have a nice cup of tea.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30The judges comments, I feel, it's all a bit of a blur now,

0:19:30 > 0:19:34so I know that they were positive.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36I think what the judges said was fair,

0:19:36 > 0:19:40but it's frustrating when you know you can do better.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42It's just made me want to work harder

0:19:42 > 0:19:44and show off what I can really do.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48I was impressed by what the others had actually done to their models.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51There's some pretty tough competition.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58The next challenge is a precision-cutting round.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01The contestants will be expected to expertly cut,

0:20:01 > 0:20:04and perfectly finish one of the hairdressing world's most

0:20:04 > 0:20:07classic styles, the perfect one-length cut.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Round two, the blockhead challenge.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16This round is all about precision and accuracy.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Alain, give us a twirl and the details, please.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20Check it out. This is it.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22The perfect one-length baseline.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Look at the effectiveness of that cut.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Every single hair is at the same length.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30It's all about the finish, so I'm looking for very sleek,

0:20:30 > 0:20:34beautifully straight blow-dry, lovely smooth, shiny hair.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Needless to say, your blockheads are in a hell of a mess.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41You'll be given one hour and ten minutes in order to achieve this.

0:20:41 > 0:20:45You will be ranked on your efforts, so keep that in mind - no pressure.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48Grab a blockhead! Time starts now! Good luck!

0:20:53 > 0:20:55The one-length is the most basic cut in a

0:20:55 > 0:20:58professional hairdresser's repertoire.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59Just pleased that she doesn't feel

0:20:59 > 0:21:02so that I can be really rough with her hair,

0:21:02 > 0:21:04cos it's quite tangled.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08They're cutting real human hair on identical blockheads,

0:21:08 > 0:21:12so that the judges can assess the finished cuts precisely.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15To be honest I know nothing about cutting.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18I was quite nervous, but, I'm feeling quite excited about it.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21I'm excited to, like, have a go at it.

0:21:21 > 0:21:26I've never cut hair before in my life,

0:21:26 > 0:21:29so this is quite a challenge.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32This is easy.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36Grab all the hair, gather it up in a ponytail, big scissors,

0:21:36 > 0:21:38snip - got yourself a one-length.

0:21:38 > 0:21:3950 quid, please.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41No, no, no, no, it's not that easy.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43What we try to avoid is graduation.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45What is graduation?

0:21:45 > 0:21:47It's when the length is uneven.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50- Like a wedge... - Different-lengthed hairs...

0:21:50 > 0:21:53- Correct. - OK, and there's no graduation here?

0:21:53 > 0:21:54It's all the same length.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57You can see, perfect one-length is there.

0:21:57 > 0:22:02Golden rule, and to make sure that this length is exactly square,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05is that you cut from behind your model.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07So you keep your bodyweight at the back,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- and everything stays back here. - So, no moving the blockhead?

0:22:10 > 0:22:12No moving the blockhead and no moving round the blockhead.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15If the stylists start twisting the blockhead,

0:22:15 > 0:22:17you'll cut off this corner.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20And you'll create a round shape at the back. It'll be round.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27To make sure all the hair is exactly the same length,

0:22:27 > 0:22:31the stylists should divide it into sections.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34Sectioning hair makes it more manageable to cut,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37and every haircut has its own sectioning pattern.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40A standard pattern for the one-length

0:22:40 > 0:22:42consists of five sections -

0:22:42 > 0:22:46a central parting, two leading diagonally down to the nape,

0:22:46 > 0:22:48and a further two on the crown.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Just started off sectioning the hair

0:22:50 > 0:22:52and I'm just going to take it layer by layer.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55I've had lots of different hairstyles in my lifetime,

0:22:55 > 0:22:58I go to the hairdressers, so sitting in the mirror, chatting and looking

0:22:58 > 0:23:02what they've done, it's obviously sunk into my brain somehow!

0:23:04 > 0:23:08After sectioning, the stylists must make their first cut.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11This is called the baseline, or guide.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13It should be perfectly straight,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16as it's the level that every single hair must reach.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25It's really difficult cos my hands are quite shaky at the minute.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32It just feels so unnatural holding a pair of scissors.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41There's no margin for error - it's precision.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47To follow the baseline accurately, the stylist should

0:23:47 > 0:23:52bring down narrow sections of hair, so the guide can be seen underneath.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54The first section's got a different length.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59Second, you have to bring each section down,

0:23:59 > 0:24:03use the fine teeth of the comb, go below with your scissors, have the

0:24:03 > 0:24:07block through the teeth, you'll be able to create you perfect line.

0:24:10 > 0:24:15Ebuni has moved her blockhead to start cutting from the side.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18This is breaking Denise's golden rule.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22So, how do you feel about the haircut challenge?

0:24:22 > 0:24:26You guys said perfect, but at the moment I'm getting mediocre.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30I'm not getting that perfect straight line - looks a bit staggered.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33I think I would be thinking about the position of your head.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37Working from the back of it and how that head is positioned.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39All right. Thank you.

0:24:45 > 0:24:4730 minutes left, guys.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49Get it done - clock's ticking.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52With most of the cuts now complete,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55the stylists should turn their attention to the second

0:24:55 > 0:25:00part of the challenge - a perfect straight blow-dry.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03I'm not the best blow-dryer, but...

0:25:03 > 0:25:06how hard can a brush and a blow-dryer in one hand be?

0:25:08 > 0:25:12When judging the blow-dry, I'll be looking for that lovely sleek,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15smooth cuticle, so you get beautiful shiny hair.

0:25:15 > 0:25:16A smooth cuticle?

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Cuticle is the top layer of the hair.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21You've got to get the brush and dryer together,

0:25:21 > 0:25:24so that top layer is literally polished.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28- OK.- Too hot a hairdryer, dryer too close to the hair,

0:25:28 > 0:25:31the hair literally goes, "Ah, don't do that to me!"

0:25:31 > 0:25:33So you're going to watching out for people going gung-ho,

0:25:33 > 0:25:36crazy with the hairdryer in the last two in the last two minutes?

0:25:36 > 0:25:38Absolutely. We want beautiful hair.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46I'm flattening the cuticle by making sure I blow-dry the hair

0:25:46 > 0:25:49completely flat against the growth, so it grows straight down.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53This is quite straightforward for me, yeah.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00Can I get a plaster, please? I cut myself.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02I can hear blow-dryers, so I'm getting a bit worried.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Running out of time, got a little bit panicked

0:26:05 > 0:26:07and I've cut my finger just a little bit.

0:26:10 > 0:26:11Thank you.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16I feel for you a little bit cos you killed it in the first round...

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Shut up! Don't say that.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20The judges loved your work, so now you're teacher's pet.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23No! Don't be silly.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27I've just got the one side left to do, so hopefully wont take too long.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31As long as I get the majority dry, I can blast off the rest afterwards.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34I'm just going through blow-drying.

0:26:34 > 0:26:38I'm not really the best blow-dryer, but I've kind of worked out

0:26:38 > 0:26:41a technique that helps and works for me.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44I'm just kind of cleaning up as I'm going along.

0:26:44 > 0:26:45- Excellent!- Thank you.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47- See you in a minute.- Thank you.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Five minutes left.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56You have five minutes.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59In the last few minutes, it's vital that the stylists check that

0:26:59 > 0:27:01all the hair is the same length

0:27:01 > 0:27:03and that they tidy up any unevenness.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06It's not a straight line at all.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11But I'm just going to try and hide it an hope that they don't notice.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I've only got four minutes left

0:27:15 > 0:27:17so I'm going to dry it off as smooth as I can.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20It doesn't feel too bad.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23I think it's more important to get the lines clean rather than

0:27:23 > 0:27:24make sure it's fully dry.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30That's it - scissors down, hairdryers off!

0:27:31 > 0:27:36Step away from the severed heads. Annie!

0:27:36 > 0:27:38Thank you.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40The blockhead challenge is over.

0:27:40 > 0:27:45You've all done your best, now it's time to hear from our judges.

0:27:45 > 0:27:46Annie.

0:27:51 > 0:27:52Annie, how did you go?

0:27:52 > 0:27:55I was pretty nervous.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05Step back, you can see the underneath.

0:28:05 > 0:28:07There is shorter sections.

0:28:09 > 0:28:13A bit of advice is sometimes to step back and look, in fact,

0:28:13 > 0:28:14cos you stayed up close.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17I watched you, you were up close all the time

0:28:17 > 0:28:20- and you didn't stand back and actually look at this haircut.- OK.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23- And you would have seen what Alain's just pointed out.- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26We're being strict, but it's the simplest first haircut.

0:28:26 > 0:28:30If we don't nail that one, well, the rest won't be easy.

0:28:30 > 0:28:35The other seven contestants, get ready - they're on the warpath.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40What has Amy done here?

0:28:43 > 0:28:46- Feels like you've ran out of a bit of time for your blow-dry.- Yes.

0:28:46 > 0:28:48- Slightly damp.- Just at the end.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51- How did you run out of time? - I spent too much time on the cutting.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53I was trying to make it perfect.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57There's a few little bits coming down, that's where you check the

0:28:57 > 0:29:01haircut at the end, once the hair's combed, you can cut the remains.

0:29:01 > 0:29:02Yeah.

0:29:03 > 0:29:04What's Kobi done here?

0:29:04 > 0:29:08Looks pretty good to me, but what the hell do I know?

0:29:12 > 0:29:14If you step back and look at the line,

0:29:14 > 0:29:18through the middle it's gone a little bit bumpy.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20You've sort of formed a bit of graduation.

0:29:20 > 0:29:25The main feature of it is keeping the angle on the sides

0:29:25 > 0:29:27and creating the straight line.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31And, um, yeah, I think you've done a very good job.

0:29:31 > 0:29:32Thank you.

0:29:35 > 0:29:38The blow-dry's absolutely lovely. Nice, smooth cuticle.

0:29:38 > 0:29:40You're just going slightly up on the edge.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44I would say that the line is slightly off, actually.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47You'll probably find that you took your body slightly the wrong way.

0:29:47 > 0:29:51- You didn't stay balanced.- That's right.- Were you cutting it all...?

0:29:51 > 0:29:53Probably, yeah.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01Just want to do one thing... is give it a good shake

0:30:01 > 0:30:05so we can see exactly how the hair's going to fall down straight after.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08You can see the hair's perfectly straight.

0:30:08 > 0:30:12This shows a great blow-dry because the cuticle's lovely and smooth

0:30:12 > 0:30:15so when you tip it upside down, it doesn't tangle

0:30:15 > 0:30:17and it easily brushes through.

0:30:17 > 0:30:19When this client walks down the street in a gale,

0:30:19 > 0:30:21she still looks fabulous.

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Look at that. It's pretty perfect.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26- Fabulous. Nice one, Marvin. - Thank you.- Well done.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29I like the length,

0:30:29 > 0:30:32and the line is there.

0:30:32 > 0:30:36- I think the blow-dry could have been a little smoother.- Yes.- I agree.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39- You maybe dried it a bit too fast or...- OK.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43- So the ends are looking a little raw.- Sure.- It's a good attempt. - Thank you.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49That's a good-looking line. You've done a good job.

0:30:49 > 0:30:53Well blow-dried. As we move it, the line's just floating.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56Dominika straight-fingers.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02I love this haircut.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05- For me, this is a girl who knows how to have a good time.- Absolutely.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08Not like these prissy, straight-cut librarian types over here.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10- She's got a flick in her hair. - Oh, yeah.

0:31:10 > 0:31:13Do you understand the difference from this to what was asked?

0:31:13 > 0:31:16Yeah. I can see straightway that it's not what you wanted.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19I watched so many cutting videos, I was trying to get the technique right

0:31:19 > 0:31:21and I couldn't remember which way to do it

0:31:21 > 0:31:25and I looked around and was like, "Oh, my gosh. Everybody's got a dead straight line

0:31:25 > 0:31:27"and mine looks like Rachel from Friends."

0:31:27 > 0:31:29- So you understand where you went wrong?- Yeah.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31Just the point where you were going through the sides

0:31:31 > 0:31:34and you carried on going down the sides.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36You have to keep the natural fall of the hair

0:31:36 > 0:31:38but direct it backwards to create that hair.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41- Not quite what the challenge was. - Yeah.

0:31:41 > 0:31:46The judges will now rank the blockheads in reverse order.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49I can see what you mean about the angle of the block.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52I didn't get a chance to finish the full hair properly.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55I'm hoping that I'm not right near the bottom.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57- Even in the finish, you can see... - The shine.

0:31:57 > 0:31:58It wasn't what they wanted at all

0:31:58 > 0:32:01and I thought I'm out of the competition.

0:32:01 > 0:32:03This is just going so pear shaped.

0:32:03 > 0:32:04That's a nice shape.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06Nice precision.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09I can't blow-dry a lick

0:32:09 > 0:32:11but it seemed to work

0:32:11 > 0:32:13and I think I done the best.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16Overall, I think we've made our decision.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18Yeah, I think we know who we're going for.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23Our judges have been ranking your efforts.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26What we haven't told you is that the rankings

0:32:26 > 0:32:30has a direct effect on the model you will choose

0:32:30 > 0:32:32in the final round.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35You can see, just behind me there in the prep room,

0:32:35 > 0:32:38our board, which has eight pictures

0:32:38 > 0:32:40of eight different models

0:32:40 > 0:32:44with very different types and lengths of hair.

0:32:44 > 0:32:49The winner of the blockhead round gets to pick their model first.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52And the results are as follows.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55In bottom place is...

0:32:56 > 0:32:58..Ebuni.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01In seventh place - Amy.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05In sixth place is Annie.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07Fifth is Laura,

0:33:07 > 0:33:09in fourth place Kobi

0:33:09 > 0:33:11and third Katie.

0:33:11 > 0:33:12And in second place...

0:33:15 > 0:33:17..Dominika.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20Marvin, you've won the blockhead challenge.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22Awesome.

0:33:25 > 0:33:29The theme of tomorrow's final challenge is...

0:33:29 > 0:33:31fairy tale.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33Whether you go mad with extensions

0:33:33 > 0:33:36to recreate Rapunzel

0:33:36 > 0:33:39or get Cinderella ready to go to the ball,

0:33:39 > 0:33:42it's entirely up to you.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44Marvin, you came first in the blockhead challenge,

0:33:44 > 0:33:48which means you'll get first choice of tomorrow's hair.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51Ebuni, you won't have any choice.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53Go take a look at the board.

0:33:54 > 0:33:59On the board are models representing the three major hair types -

0:33:59 > 0:34:03European, African and Asian,

0:34:03 > 0:34:06some of which has been chemically treated,

0:34:06 > 0:34:08either bleached or relaxed.

0:34:08 > 0:34:13Marvin, you're up first, sir. Whatever you want.

0:34:13 > 0:34:18The hair type I picked has got a nice length to it.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Not too thick, not too short and it's not too layered.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23It'll be much easier for me to work with.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26As amateurs, the stylists have limited experience

0:34:26 > 0:34:29in working with different types of hair.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33Those who came low down in the ranking may find themselves

0:34:33 > 0:34:37in unfamiliar territory in tomorrow's fairy-tale challenge.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40The hair type isn't really one that I would have chosen

0:34:40 > 0:34:44so trying to incorporate that into my ideas

0:34:44 > 0:34:47is going to require a lot of thinking.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50- Ebuni, she's all yours.- Thank you.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53I would have liked to have tried something different

0:34:53 > 0:34:56to show that I can work with European hair,

0:34:56 > 0:34:58but I guess they gave me Afro hair so I'm going to show them

0:34:58 > 0:35:01what I do on a day-to-day basis.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15OK, let's talk individuals. Who's shining?

0:35:15 > 0:35:19- Who are the ones to look out for? - I'd say that Marvin is shining.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21A very impressive haircut.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24From the first challenge, I think Annie did really well

0:35:24 > 0:35:28with her quiff. She really impressed the whole group.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Who's struggling a little bit?

0:35:30 > 0:35:34I believe Ebuni. She's had a hard time doing a haircut.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36The first challenge, her quiff wasn't high enough.

0:35:36 > 0:35:41With Amy, it wasn't really a quiff. It wasn't exactly what we asked for.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44- Good morning.- ALL: Morning. - Welcome back.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46Welcome back, one and all.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50Today, you will face your final challenge in the freestyle round.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53The theme is fairy tale.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56The judges really want you to push yourselves, OK?

0:35:56 > 0:35:58So don't hold anything back.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01You have three-and-a-half hours for this challenge.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04Get in there and do it. Let's go.

0:36:04 > 0:36:08The freestyle round is a chance for the stylists to impress the judges

0:36:08 > 0:36:11with both their technical and creative skills.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14And they can use any amount of hair extensions

0:36:14 > 0:36:16and accessories they wish.

0:36:16 > 0:36:18I'm going to use tons of this.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20Those who did well in the blockhead round

0:36:20 > 0:36:22will be working with the hair type of their choice.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24- I'm Rebecca.- Nice to meet you.

0:36:24 > 0:36:28Others, who had little or no choice, will have to think on their feet,

0:36:28 > 0:36:30and the stakes are high,

0:36:30 > 0:36:34as at the end of this round, someone will be going home.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36I'm going to put some extensions in here

0:36:36 > 0:36:39and it's going to be ridiculously long.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41So much hair, so excited.

0:36:41 > 0:36:45I love the theme of fairy tale. I can be dead creative

0:36:45 > 0:36:47and make it dead girly.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50I think no matter how old you are,

0:36:50 > 0:36:53everybody has wanted to be a part of a fairy tale

0:36:53 > 0:36:55in some sort of way.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58So the final challenge is styling.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00The theme is fairy tale. That's exciting.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03- Very exciting. - The sky's the limit.- Completely,

0:37:03 > 0:37:06because they can use all sorts of techniques, accessories,

0:37:06 > 0:37:10- and they can go for the fairies, the goblins...- Did you say "goblins"?

0:37:10 > 0:37:13- Goblins, yeah.- I thought it had to be beautiful.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16Beautifully done. It's their vision of a fairy tale.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19I want to see big hair. I want to see how they're going to use

0:37:19 > 0:37:20all the hair that we've provided,

0:37:20 > 0:37:22making it ready to go on stage,

0:37:22 > 0:37:25ready to go for a movie part.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31Having come towards the bottom in the blockhead round,

0:37:31 > 0:37:35Annie is working with much shorter hair than she was hoping for.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37- Hey, Annie.- Hello. - Are you well?

0:37:37 > 0:37:39I'm good. I'm a bit nervous today.

0:37:39 > 0:37:43Have you got an idea of what your fairy tale is?

0:37:43 > 0:37:45It's Snow Queen, Lord Of The Rings style,

0:37:45 > 0:37:47- Game Of Thrones.- OK.

0:37:47 > 0:37:52- I've had to slightly adapt it, just through the hair type.- Uh-huh.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55I'm looking to use a wig cap

0:37:55 > 0:37:59- and I'm going to be pulling the hair through...- Right.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02..using a crochet needle to create a looped effect.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04Hopefully!

0:38:04 > 0:38:07So just checked Annie. Right now she's using a cap.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10I'm seeing her pulling out hair

0:38:10 > 0:38:13and it looks like bald hair with hair pooping out

0:38:13 > 0:38:16and she's been shaved off - not very pretty.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18Not sure where that's going to go.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21A wig cap is normally used to cover hair when fitting wigs,

0:38:21 > 0:38:25but Annie is pulling fine strands of hair through it to create

0:38:25 > 0:38:26a looped effect.

0:38:26 > 0:38:28This bit I'm doing now

0:38:28 > 0:38:30is going to be the trickiest

0:38:30 > 0:38:34because it's quite time consuming.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38Whilst her model is left waiting,

0:38:38 > 0:38:42Dominika is working on her design in the prep room.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45I'm making a flower on the top of the head.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48I want it to come with something not obvious,

0:38:48 > 0:38:51so I thought, "Let's be slightly different

0:38:51 > 0:38:54"and do Thumbelina - something tiny, but really cute."

0:38:54 > 0:38:58She's building her petals out of wire mesh and fabric,

0:38:58 > 0:39:01- covered in hair extensions. - It's a good idea.

0:39:01 > 0:39:02It's a big project, too.

0:39:02 > 0:39:06She's building some petals. They look quite chunky.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10It's going to be hard to secure and balance into the head.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14I am going to create a unicorn horn,

0:39:14 > 0:39:18so sort of like a fantasy Pegasus horse.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21Kobi will use a plait of his model's own hair

0:39:21 > 0:39:24along with hair extensions

0:39:24 > 0:39:28to cover a tower made of wire and florist's foam.

0:39:28 > 0:39:30Oh, wow, that's heavy.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33- It's going to be a whole lot heavier in a minute.- Oh!

0:39:33 > 0:39:36Just seen Kobi. He's building a unicorn horn.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39Not sure about the placement.

0:39:39 > 0:39:42Unicorns should be on the front, so let's see what happens.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45- I'm scared to move my head. - Don't be scared.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49- So, Ebuni, you OK? - I'm good, thank you.

0:39:49 > 0:39:51You couldn't choose your model yesterday.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54- No.- Are you happy with the hair texture?

0:39:54 > 0:39:57- Yes, it's the hair that grows on my head.- Yes.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00- It's the hair that I work with. - And you understand the texture

0:40:00 > 0:40:01and how to work with it.

0:40:01 > 0:40:05As the hair's wet, what I'm adding is just a little bit of coconut oil.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07Why coconut oil?

0:40:07 > 0:40:10I find that it moisturises without making the hair too greasy.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13- Uh-huh.- So when I blow-dry it, it doesn't come too sticky or hard.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15It still gives me a lot of movement.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18- Does it keep a shine through the hair?- Yeah.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21As I just put that on, it's got a really nice look to it.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24More important, have you got that fairy-tale style in your head?

0:40:24 > 0:40:26It's going to be an up-do,

0:40:26 > 0:40:28where her hair is braided up to the centre

0:40:28 > 0:40:31then it's going to be bunned, and pin curls around it

0:40:31 > 0:40:35to really decorate and make it look like she's walked out to greet her empire.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42Having being ranked first yesterday in the blockhead round,

0:40:42 > 0:40:44Marvin had his pick of the hair types.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49I'm very pleased with the type of hair I'm working with today.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51It's in between thick and thin

0:40:51 > 0:40:55so it's very manageable. It's long with nice layers.

0:40:55 > 0:40:59What is the character you're going to choose today?

0:40:59 > 0:41:02She's like a princess of the woods kind of thing,

0:41:02 > 0:41:05so she lives in big castle, tree house,

0:41:05 > 0:41:07and everything's really messy.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10She's at one with the animals and butterflies,

0:41:10 > 0:41:13- so I'm just trying to go for a look like that.- Definitely fantasy?

0:41:13 > 0:41:16With what I'm doing now, my pin curl, I didn't want my pin curl too neat

0:41:16 > 0:41:20to help achieve the style that I'm looking for.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22I just wanted to put a basic curl in it.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Marvin's hair, right now he's tonging the hair.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28I'm not sure about the technique he's using -

0:41:28 > 0:41:31starting from the ends, rolling into the roots.

0:41:31 > 0:41:33I would have used the other way, going from the roots to the end.

0:41:33 > 0:41:37Roots need to be secure to make clean, clean curls.

0:41:37 > 0:41:39Let's see what happens.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41LOUD SQUEAKING

0:41:41 > 0:41:44I apologise. I do apologise.

0:41:44 > 0:41:48Katie is cutting florist's foam

0:41:48 > 0:41:52to make an accessory for her romantic fairy-tale design.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55I am covering it with the black hair that matches my model's hair

0:41:55 > 0:41:57to make a heart-shaped hairpiece.

0:42:06 > 0:42:10You look like you've got a clear idea what your fairy tale is going to be.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12I'm wanting a medieval sort of Rapunzel theme.

0:42:12 > 0:42:15Still keeping it dead long but dead detailed at the back,

0:42:15 > 0:42:20- but I'm going to work all flowers and things into it.- OK.- Interesting. Good luck. See you later.- Thank you.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26Disappearing fast from the prep room stores,

0:42:26 > 0:42:30are the hair extensions made of real and artificial hair?

0:42:30 > 0:42:31Sweet!

0:42:31 > 0:42:33No running!

0:42:33 > 0:42:36Oh, I'm not allowed to run.

0:42:36 > 0:42:39Amy has chosen artificial hair to get the length

0:42:39 > 0:42:41for her Rapunzel pony tail.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43Because it's made of plastic,

0:42:43 > 0:42:46it's available of any length or colour,

0:42:46 > 0:42:49but its hard texture makes it difficult to work with.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51Amy, how's it going?

0:42:51 > 0:42:54- It's going all right. I'm trying to brush this through.- What's the idea?

0:42:54 > 0:42:56It's a Rapunzel theme

0:42:56 > 0:42:58so I'm wanting this to be a big fish plait down the side,

0:42:58 > 0:43:02- but I'm having a nightmare brushing this.- Are you going to get where you want to be?- Hopefully.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05If I can get a brush through this! I'll leave you to it.

0:43:05 > 0:43:06- Nice work.- Thank you.

0:43:06 > 0:43:11Oh, my God! Please don't film me doing this!

0:43:11 > 0:43:13To make her Queen of Hearts design,

0:43:13 > 0:43:16Laura is using hair extensions for the first time.

0:43:16 > 0:43:20I've just basically cut sections to add into the hair,

0:43:20 > 0:43:22but at the minute,

0:43:22 > 0:43:24the hair extension looks like this,

0:43:24 > 0:43:27and I don't know what to do with it!

0:43:29 > 0:43:33Guys, you have one hour left. That's one hour.

0:43:33 > 0:43:38Dominika has yet to touch her model's hair.

0:43:39 > 0:43:42All the petals are done. I'm attaching it to a wire,

0:43:42 > 0:43:46making like a crown. You realise... there's not enough time.

0:43:46 > 0:43:49- Did you miss me?- Yes.

0:43:49 > 0:43:51Using a French plait as a base,

0:43:51 > 0:43:54Dominika plans to attach her flower to the model's head

0:43:54 > 0:43:57using plastic cable ties.

0:43:57 > 0:43:59Is it heavy?

0:43:59 > 0:44:01It's not too bad.

0:44:02 > 0:44:06(It feels kind of bulky. Flowers are much more delicate.

0:44:06 > 0:44:09- (Yeah.- It needs to be refined a little bit more.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12(It's a little heavy the way it is.)

0:44:12 > 0:44:15Seriously, why do I do it to myself?

0:44:18 > 0:44:20Right, can you give your head a little wiggle?

0:44:20 > 0:44:21I know it sounds stupid.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25At the moment, it seems fine.

0:44:25 > 0:44:27Instead of using his plait as a base,

0:44:27 > 0:44:30Kobi is decorating his tower with it.

0:44:32 > 0:44:36I've attached this structure that I've made by pins,

0:44:36 > 0:44:39so it's all pinned in tightly.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42Not by anything else, just all by pins.

0:44:42 > 0:44:45Hold your nose and shut your eyes, yeah?

0:44:45 > 0:44:47Ahead of the other stylists,

0:44:47 > 0:44:51Marvin is putting the finishing touches to his fairytale design.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54I've got some spare time left so I'll probably just sit down

0:44:54 > 0:44:55and have a little chinwag with my model.

0:44:58 > 0:45:0230 minutes left, guys. Get it done, clock's ticking.

0:45:11 > 0:45:12That's not gold!

0:45:23 > 0:45:25I see you've gone for something quite understated.

0:45:25 > 0:45:27Something really subtle.

0:45:27 > 0:45:30The question is, how far are we going?

0:45:30 > 0:45:34I'm not going to take it any higher now. This is my limit.

0:45:34 > 0:45:36You're going to give this lady a neck injury. Are you OK?

0:45:37 > 0:45:40- Yes.- Does it feel like it's pulling your head back there?

0:45:40 > 0:45:45- If I move my head backwards, which I'm not doing.- That's insane.

0:45:47 > 0:45:49I don't have a word to describe what that is.

0:45:49 > 0:45:53Look like some kind of Little Shop Of Horrors

0:45:53 > 0:45:55Venus flytrap contraption.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58It's not really a trap. It's a flower.

0:45:58 > 0:46:01How often do you see your therapist?

0:46:01 > 0:46:03That's a very personal question.

0:46:03 > 0:46:06Ten minutes, guys. Just ten minutes.

0:46:06 > 0:46:08SHE GASPS

0:46:08 > 0:46:10I'm ready for that.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12Every week in the freestyle round,

0:46:12 > 0:46:15the models will be asked to parade their hair for the judges,

0:46:15 > 0:46:18so in the final minutes it's vital the stylists

0:46:18 > 0:46:22check their creations are stable and secure.

0:46:22 > 0:46:24Just pop your head forward like that.

0:46:24 > 0:46:26- Is that better?- Yeah.

0:46:28 > 0:46:32Amy is putting the finishing touches to her Rapunzel pony tail.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34The long piece I was using was synthetic

0:46:34 > 0:46:36so I couldn't really get my brush through it,

0:46:36 > 0:46:38so I wasn't able to apply it.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40I think it's a bit lazy, really, but...

0:46:42 > 0:46:43Unless I just take it out.

0:46:46 > 0:46:48Oh, I am going to.

0:46:48 > 0:46:49I'm just taking it out.

0:46:51 > 0:46:52Two minutes left, everyone.

0:46:52 > 0:46:55Two minutes remaining.

0:46:57 > 0:47:00- Did I just see the Rapunzel bit fall off?- Yes.

0:47:00 > 0:47:03Oh, my God, what's happening? Are you going to reattach it?

0:47:03 > 0:47:05No, because I didn't have time to plait it

0:47:05 > 0:47:07and because it wasn't the right style of hair,

0:47:07 > 0:47:08I felt it looked a bit lazy.

0:47:08 > 0:47:10- Do they know that you were going to attach that.- Yeah!

0:47:10 > 0:47:13- I was going to say hide it. - Just kick it under the table.

0:47:13 > 0:47:15Kick it under the table, don't mention it.

0:47:15 > 0:47:18If they do mention it, just say, "What are you talking about?"

0:47:25 > 0:47:29That's it, guys. The fairytale is over.

0:47:29 > 0:47:31Step away from your models, please.

0:47:32 > 0:47:35I don't really think that there's anything else I could have done.

0:47:35 > 0:47:36I'm quite proud of it.

0:47:36 > 0:47:40Once the judges come, they have a little surprise inside

0:47:40 > 0:47:42and I just need to pull the string.

0:47:44 > 0:47:46Denise and Alain will be looking to see

0:47:46 > 0:47:49how well the designs fit the freestyle brief,

0:47:49 > 0:47:53and that they stand up to 360-degree scrutiny.

0:47:53 > 0:47:57- OK, let's go in for a closer look, shall we?- Yep.

0:47:57 > 0:47:58OK.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01Dominika. Check this out. Behold!

0:48:12 > 0:48:14You don't mind taking a walk, please?

0:48:19 > 0:48:21You can see that she's really enjoying it as well.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24LAUGHTER

0:48:26 > 0:48:27Nicely done.

0:48:27 > 0:48:31It held together and your petals are still there.

0:48:31 > 0:48:34Big challenge, doing this hairstyle.

0:48:34 > 0:48:37It was a bit of a gamble, but I think it was worth it.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40- All your edges, I would have covered that up.- Yeah.

0:48:40 > 0:48:44That's where it becomes a little bit too separate.

0:48:44 > 0:48:47The theme is Thumbelina, isn't it? So where is Thumbelina?

0:48:47 > 0:48:49- You have to open up the flower.- Ah!

0:48:51 > 0:48:53- SINGING THEATRICALLY:- Ah, ah, ah!

0:48:53 > 0:48:57- Look at that!- She's in there!- That's very sweet!- That is a fairytale.

0:48:57 > 0:48:59- Absolutely.- It has to be...

0:48:59 > 0:49:00Good try.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02Having a go, that's what we're here for.

0:49:02 > 0:49:04Well, very brave.

0:49:05 > 0:49:06Let's check out Marvin.

0:49:23 > 0:49:27So, I feel the forest is there but the nest is there too.

0:49:27 > 0:49:29- What do you mean, nest? - It's like a bird nest on the top.

0:49:29 > 0:49:32Not very precise elements of texture.

0:49:32 > 0:49:34It's quite strawy.

0:49:34 > 0:49:38If you want to make it messy, make a feature out of it. Make it big!

0:49:38 > 0:49:40- Cool.- That's what you want to see - hair!

0:49:40 > 0:49:41As much as possible.

0:49:41 > 0:49:45You're just slightly lazy on your technique, I would say.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48You could have lifted these pieces and curled those

0:49:48 > 0:49:50and then they would have cascaded over.

0:49:50 > 0:49:55- It would just have been finished. - Were you a little bit lazy, Marvin?

0:49:55 > 0:49:58I probably... Yeah, I probably was.

0:50:02 > 0:50:06MUSIC: "Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairy" by Tchaikovsky

0:50:15 > 0:50:19- Oh, it's wobbling a little bit. - Can you put your head up?

0:50:20 > 0:50:21I can if I go like this.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24- OK, that's... - Otherwise it goes backwards.

0:50:24 > 0:50:26Otherwise your head would just fall off.

0:50:26 > 0:50:27Take a seat.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29Well done.

0:50:29 > 0:50:32So, was the positioning right for you?

0:50:32 > 0:50:35I would have preferred if it was a little bit further upwards.

0:50:35 > 0:50:37- Yeah, a little bit more than... - Yeah.

0:50:37 > 0:50:39You know, unicorns usually come up from the front.

0:50:39 > 0:50:41If you were standing in the right place,

0:50:41 > 0:50:44you would be much better positioned.

0:50:44 > 0:50:45OK?

0:50:45 > 0:50:48I feel there's an engineering thing that's going on.

0:50:48 > 0:50:51- It's a little bit Leaning Tower of Pisa.- Bit more Marge Simpson.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54And the main part was you made a ponytail in the middle

0:50:54 > 0:50:57and then you didn't use the ponytail to support the head of hair.

0:50:57 > 0:50:58When you create something,

0:50:58 > 0:51:00the person wearing it must be very comfortable,

0:51:00 > 0:51:03- and not have to feel that they're holding it.- Yeah.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05Are you happy with that colour choice?

0:51:05 > 0:51:08Um, I did run out of the colour of hair that I wanted,

0:51:08 > 0:51:12- so I did, essentially, have to choose gold.- Right.

0:51:26 > 0:51:29It's the same feeling as what you're very good at -

0:51:29 > 0:51:32- doing bridal hair. - You've over-accessorised.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34You've overdone these roses.

0:51:34 > 0:51:37It's a bit wedding cake, not wedding hairstyle.

0:51:37 > 0:51:42You did say Rapunzel, and I feel Rapunzel's lying on the floor.

0:51:42 > 0:51:43I told you to hide that in a drawer.

0:51:43 > 0:51:45When I looked at it, I just felt it was a bit lazy

0:51:45 > 0:51:48compared to the rest of the hair, so I just pulled it out.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51- I think your Rapunzel would have kept a fairytale in it.- Yeah.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53Definitely. I agree.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17The braiding's much more difficult. This seems to be your forte.

0:52:17 > 0:52:19You've done it quite a few times.

0:52:19 > 0:52:22- You didn't get quite enough support to get this...- Yeah.

0:52:22 > 0:52:25- In fact, is this had been... - Just a little bit.- ..that bit more,

0:52:25 > 0:52:29it becomes fairytale princess, just with that one swoop.

0:52:50 > 0:52:54The placement's right but I would emphasise the volume a lot more.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57But it's well achieved and it looks pretty.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21- the balance of these roses...- Yep.

0:53:21 > 0:53:23..is irritating me,

0:53:23 > 0:53:26- because you didn't get them a little bit more even.- Sure.

0:53:26 > 0:53:29- I would have brought some of the hair forward.- OK.

0:53:56 > 0:53:59I love the length, the dramatic aspect of it.

0:53:59 > 0:54:01As much as you caught the texture, it's moving well,

0:54:01 > 0:54:04even on the catwalk she looked quite effective.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07And I think the other thing is one accessory.

0:54:07 > 0:54:08It just makes it and you've just gone

0:54:08 > 0:54:10for one fabulous piece of jewellery.

0:54:10 > 0:54:13Would you say you've been proven wrong about using the wig cap?

0:54:13 > 0:54:17- She's done it well. Wonderful. - Really nice.- Thank you so much.

0:54:17 > 0:54:18- Very, very good work.- Superb.

0:54:36 > 0:54:40I'm a bit worried that I might be going home. Hopefully not.

0:54:41 > 0:54:42I don't want to go home.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45I think now I've got a feel for it, I want to be creative with it

0:54:45 > 0:54:46and do more things.

0:54:46 > 0:54:49I'm feeling a little bit scared.

0:54:49 > 0:54:50Today could be my last day.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53I can't even drink, my hands are shaking.

0:54:57 > 0:55:00So, two big decisions to be made.

0:55:00 > 0:55:02Somebody's about to win the freestyle round

0:55:02 > 0:55:04and somebody's about to go home.

0:55:04 > 0:55:08- Who impressed you in the freestyle round?- I really liked Annie.

0:55:08 > 0:55:11Wasn't sure at the beginning, but she really turned it up.

0:55:11 > 0:55:13For me, Laura took me to the movies.

0:55:13 > 0:55:17The overall shape and the techniques that she used were fabulous.

0:55:17 > 0:55:20So who's the person who's looking most likely to face the chop?

0:55:20 > 0:55:23I'd say that Marvin's escaped by a hair.

0:55:23 > 0:55:25"By a hair!"

0:55:25 > 0:55:28For me, well, there's two of them, Amy and Ebuni.

0:55:28 > 0:55:31They did the same kind of work, they weren't up to scratch

0:55:31 > 0:55:33with their technique.

0:55:33 > 0:55:35Unfortunately, it's not enough.

0:55:35 > 0:55:38Amy does bridal hair and she does it very well,

0:55:38 > 0:55:40but she hasn't shown us anything else

0:55:40 > 0:55:44and Ebuni has shown us, in the first round, braids and plaits

0:55:44 > 0:55:46and in the third round, braids and plaits.

0:55:46 > 0:55:49- They never left their comfort zone? - That's right.

0:55:49 > 0:55:52And the other person I feel is in trouble is Kobi.

0:55:52 > 0:55:54He didn't think about the foundations

0:55:54 > 0:55:56and what he was actually creating,

0:55:56 > 0:55:58he was just getting as high as he could

0:55:58 > 0:56:00without thinking about it being on the head.

0:56:00 > 0:56:04OK, well, you guys have got some tough decisions to make.

0:56:04 > 0:56:07- I will leave you to it. Good luck.- Thank you.

0:56:09 > 0:56:12I think she kept it safe. It's not what the competition's all about.

0:56:13 > 0:56:17Put a lot of planning into it, but it didn't quite finish.

0:56:17 > 0:56:19It would have been nice to see something else, wouldn't it?

0:56:19 > 0:56:21It would be nice to see something different.

0:56:23 > 0:56:25I think we've made our decision.

0:56:26 > 0:56:27Hi, guys.

0:56:27 > 0:56:29It's been fabulous watching you in action,

0:56:29 > 0:56:33but as you know, only one of you can win the freestyle round

0:56:33 > 0:56:35and our judges have come to a decision.

0:56:37 > 0:56:39The person who's won the freestyle round is...

0:56:44 > 0:56:47- Thank you so much. - Congratulations. Brilliant.

0:56:47 > 0:56:49Thank you so much.

0:56:49 > 0:56:54The bad news is that we do have to send one of you home.

0:56:54 > 0:56:58I should tell you that this decision was made considering

0:56:58 > 0:57:00all three of the challenges that you faced.

0:57:00 > 0:57:04The person the judges have decided to send home is...

0:57:11 > 0:57:12..Amy.

0:57:12 > 0:57:15Oh, no, Amy!

0:57:15 > 0:57:17Oh!

0:57:17 > 0:57:19I wanted you to stay!

0:57:19 > 0:57:21Aww, thanks.

0:57:21 > 0:57:25We decided to send Amy home cos she didn't complete the challenges.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28The quiff was flat, the cut was still wet

0:57:28 > 0:57:30and the fairytale wasn't a fairytale.

0:57:32 > 0:57:34- Thank you.- That was the most...

0:57:34 > 0:57:37horrible, awful situation ever.

0:57:37 > 0:57:40Oh, my gosh, I can't believe that I'm still here.

0:57:40 > 0:57:41Oh! I'm so happy! Oh!

0:57:43 > 0:57:45I'm just so happy that they kind of...

0:57:47 > 0:57:50That they chose me to win. I couldn't believe it.

0:57:50 > 0:57:53Looking round after every task, everyone's really good here,

0:57:53 > 0:57:55so there's no-one I've looked at and thought,

0:57:55 > 0:57:56"Oh, they should have went."

0:57:56 > 0:57:59I think it's definitely the right decision they've made.

0:58:04 > 0:58:06Next time on Hair...

0:58:06 > 0:58:08It's the first time I've ever done a braided style.

0:58:08 > 0:58:10I don't think I've breathed for the first hour!

0:58:10 > 0:58:11Oh, I have no idea.

0:58:14 > 0:58:18The challenge is making hats out of hair.

0:58:21 > 0:58:24The best Mad Hatter made out of hair that I've ever seen.
