0:00:02 > 0:00:06Welcome back to Hair, where the search for Britain's best amateur hairstylist continues.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09Last week, eight contestants went head-to-head to impress the judges.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Overall, I'm a little bit disappointed.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13Royal hairdresser Denise McAdam,

0:00:13 > 0:00:18and international celebrity stylist, Alain Pichon.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21This line's not good enough, it should have been stronger.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24The amateur stylists did their best to create quiffs...

0:00:24 > 0:00:26I'm winging it.

0:00:26 > 0:00:27..cut with precision...

0:00:27 > 0:00:29I've never cut hair before.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33..and deliver dramatic, fairytale designs.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Oh, my goodness, she's in there!

0:00:36 > 0:00:37That is a fairytale.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40All in a bid to stay in the competition.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42And while critical care nurse Annie

0:00:42 > 0:00:45impressed the judges with her Snow Queen.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46Wonderful.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50Sadly, for 22-year-old beautician, Amy, the fairytale was over.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53The fairytale wasn't a fairytale.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54And she had to leave.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58This week, the judges are raising the stakes.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Everything's tricky about what I'm doing.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Oh, I have no idea.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06And the stylists will have to braid...

0:01:06 > 0:01:07I'm panicking a little bit.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10...and bouffant to their best ability to avoid elimination.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13I'm scared.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14Oh, no!

0:01:14 > 0:01:18Two days of intricate cutting and styling await the contestants.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21The floor's been swept, the scissors are sharpened,

0:01:21 > 0:01:22the judges are ready.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Let's get to work on Hair.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Oh!

0:01:36 > 0:01:39- Welcome back. How are you feeling? You good?- Good.- OK.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43As you know, the first challenge of every week is to incorporate

0:01:43 > 0:01:44a set element.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48This week's set element, plaits and braids.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50So, put it up, put it down, cut it,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52do what you want with your hair,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54but you must incorporate the set element.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58You must be strong on your section in the composition of your design.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02We'd like to see big and bold shape in the same time.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06OK, your models await. You have two hours.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Time starts now. Get to it.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Hi!

0:02:14 > 0:02:18In this challenge, the stylists have pre-selected models

0:02:18 > 0:02:20with a type of hair they want to work with.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Hey, lovely, let's get cracking.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26As plaits and braids come in many different styles,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29the contestants can choose to do any kind they like.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32I have to plead ignorance.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35I do not know the difference between a plait and a braid.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38- I imagine I'm not alone. - Well, it's quite simple actually.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40If it's onto the scalp, it's a braid,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42and when it leaves, it becomes a plait.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44So how are they going to impress you?

0:02:44 > 0:02:47How can they achieve the perfect braid or plait?

0:02:48 > 0:02:51I think it's about making sure that each strand is very even,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54very neat all the way through, from the roots to the ends.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57We want to see tightness, neatness and precision.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Whatever type of plait or braid the stylists create, they must

0:03:02 > 0:03:08form a clear, overall 360-degree design around their model's head.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The hair that I asked for was long and blonde, simply

0:03:11 > 0:03:14because I thought, with lighter hair, it would be easier to see

0:03:14 > 0:03:17the braiding pattern and the techniques I have done.

0:03:17 > 0:03:22Marvin started cutting his sister's hair when he was still a schoolboy.

0:03:23 > 0:03:28His design will include a netted rope braid, and cane rows.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32- Morning, Marvin.- Morning, Denise. - You're getting well ahead here.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Yeah, a cane row is something that I normally do.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I can see the nice channels starting.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40You've got two hours to do this challenge.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Do you think that's enough time?

0:03:42 > 0:03:44I'm used to a cane row when I do extensions.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47It's not really a problem for me. I think I'll be OK.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52Cane rows are a classic braid, created by weaving small sections

0:03:52 > 0:03:56of hair close to the scalp, and are so-called, as they should

0:03:56 > 0:04:00run in straight, evenly-spaced lines, like rows of sugar cane.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07I don't usually do plaits and braids day to day, usually I'm doing

0:04:07 > 0:04:10sort of vintage sets and things, so it's something new for me.

0:04:12 > 0:04:1525-year-old Laura is a fan of all things retro.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Laura has chosen a 1940s inspired design,

0:04:20 > 0:04:24including a French braid and fishtail plaits.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27I think I'm brushing it out, and being really apprehensive to

0:04:27 > 0:04:31start, but I'm just going to have to get started on it.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Laura starts by creating a fishtail plait.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39A perfect fishtail should have a distinctive tapered shape

0:04:39 > 0:04:43at the end, just like a fish's tail.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47The tapering is created by beginning with three strands of hair,

0:04:47 > 0:04:50then splitting them into finer and finer strands

0:04:50 > 0:04:51as they progress down the plait.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58I don't often use plaits and braids.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01They're not I would say, current and, at the moment, I'm not

0:05:01 > 0:05:05seeing a lot of plaits and braids on runways and such.

0:05:06 > 0:05:1016-year-old Kobi is his mum's personal hairdresser.

0:05:10 > 0:05:15Kobi is planning a plaited updo with twisted plaits.

0:05:15 > 0:05:16I do want to do it quite naturally

0:05:16 > 0:05:20and flowy, rather than really extreme and tight.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22And have that nicely effortless look to it.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Kobi is a little shy with it, but it's easy to make it loose.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32It's much more difficult to make it tight. So let's see what happens.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42What I've got planned, I think, should work nicely, if it works.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Everything's tricky about what I'm doing.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Mum-of-two Katie is the one her neighbours go

0:05:48 > 0:05:50to for styling their hair.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52That's beautiful, thank you.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Katie will create intricately woven braids

0:05:55 > 0:05:58to form part of a Mohican design.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01All the ends of the woven bit, which I need to kind of make

0:06:01 > 0:06:05a feature, I'm plaiting it all, and then I'm going to literally

0:06:05 > 0:06:08hold onto one strand, hold the other ones there and it

0:06:08 > 0:06:12kind of whooshes up, and you get a bit of a funny effect going on.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18I really like what Katie is doing. Micro-braiding.

0:06:18 > 0:06:24It's very fine, fine strands of hair connected into each other's.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26The interweaving is kind of complicated,

0:06:26 > 0:06:28and that makes it interesting for what she's doing.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32I haven't seen anyone else's other than Marvin's,

0:06:32 > 0:06:35and I can't believe he's got that much braiding done in that time.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36I'll be worrying.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52I'm a nurse by day, it's just been so intense.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57Intensive-care nurse Annie enjoys styling friends' hair to relax.

0:06:57 > 0:06:58Beautiful.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Annie is going to create a complicated basket weave

0:07:02 > 0:07:04as a feature of her design.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Basket weaves can be quite fiddly.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09You've got to kind of get all your hands in there

0:07:09 > 0:07:13and make sure that your positioning of your fingers are correct.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18Annie takes a large, flat section of hair and divides into strands.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21She weaves outer strands horizontally through

0:07:21 > 0:07:25the vertical strands, all the way down the section of hair,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28in the same way a wicker basket is woven.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Well, Annie, she's reaching another level.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34Basket weaving, to that degree, fat sections, fat strands,

0:07:34 > 0:07:36looks really good.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Over.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Under.

0:07:41 > 0:07:47- I have to kind of say it to myself, "Over, under."- One, two, three.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51I love the fact you've got red hair. Ginger power!

0:07:55 > 0:07:59Photographer's stylist Dominika likes to stand out from the crowd.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Ta-dah!

0:08:01 > 0:08:06Dominika's design will feature a three-dimensional birdcage plait.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13I'm going to do my favourite plait, it's called birdcage plait.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16It's a very precise one, but it looks great,

0:08:16 > 0:08:18so hopefully it will work.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21The plait is woven like a fish tail,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24but with an additional strand left loose at the root.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27This strand is gradually woven into the plait

0:08:27 > 0:08:31and then pulled, to create the three-dimensional effect.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34So once you pull it, you're getting this effect.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37It turns it into something more fancy.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Last week I got loads of African hair,

0:08:50 > 0:08:53so I wanted to do something really different

0:08:53 > 0:08:57and show that you can do these kind of styles on Caucasian hair as well.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00I'm trying to push the boat out a little bit more.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Former secondary school teacher Ebuni has styled her own hair

0:09:04 > 0:09:06since she was a teenager.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Ebuni's design will feature an 11-strand plait

0:09:09 > 0:09:11and a feather-looped headband.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15I am trying to do a feather braid, so what I'm going to do is a braid

0:09:15 > 0:09:20that's going to come across her forehead, kind of like a headband.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23So, a feather braid is a normal three-strand braid,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26but every time you cross over, you drop a little bit of hair,

0:09:26 > 0:09:28so it leaves like a feather.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31And I'm incorporating that feather back into the braid

0:09:31 > 0:09:34further down, so it kind of forms like a loop section,

0:09:34 > 0:09:38and obviously, as I'm going down the braid, I'm losing more hair,

0:09:38 > 0:09:41so the base one is getting a little bit thinner as well.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43So that's why it's a bit more tricky.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50- Hiya.- Hello.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53I see you've stepped out of a time machine from the '50s again.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- Loving it.- Thanks.- What's the least '50s item of clothing you have?

0:09:57 > 0:09:59I got a onesie, that's not very...

0:09:59 > 0:10:03- OK, how's the hair going? - It's going OK.- Yeah?

0:10:03 > 0:10:05I assume they never had braids in the '50s either.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09There was definitely a craze to sort of have a ponytail going across

0:10:09 > 0:10:14the top of the head, but this is just totally out of my comfort zone.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15I've got some bows,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18so maybe that's adding a little bit of a vintage touch, maybe.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20- Best of luck. Keep it going.- Thank you.

0:10:27 > 0:10:2920 minutes left, guys.

0:10:29 > 0:10:3120 minutes to finish what you're doing.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34With less than half an hour to go, the stylists need

0:10:34 > 0:10:37to focus on bringing together their overall design.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42There is an error at the back that I'm not so happy with,

0:10:42 > 0:10:46just because I found that I've not got a big enough plait to fill

0:10:46 > 0:10:49that shape of that big circle.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54Oh, my God.

0:10:54 > 0:10:59Marvin is struggling to finish his netted rope braid.

0:10:59 > 0:11:00Stressful, bro.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03Oh, my life.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07Yeah, I'm panicking a little bit.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Here he is. Marvin, are you happy?

0:11:11 > 0:11:13Oh, I don't know what I'm thinking right now.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16What do you mean? Is it going wrong?

0:11:16 > 0:11:18You've got to explain to me, because, to me, it looks perfect.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21I think I'm starting to panic a bit.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24I'm just used to working more with Afro-Caribbean hair,

0:11:24 > 0:11:30so with European hair, it just moves, so it's a lot harder to work.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33You requested this particular hair, though, didn't you?

0:11:33 > 0:11:35OK, you're going to have some points

0:11:35 > 0:11:36for stepping out of your comfort zone.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38- Good luck, Marvin, good luck.- Thank you.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46The stylists have just a few minutes to put the finishing touches

0:11:46 > 0:11:48to their creations.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50I don't want any ties or bobbles,

0:11:50 > 0:11:53so I've teased it with my fingers, and then I backcombed it.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Then all I've done is sprayed some hairspray on.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00I don't know what they're going to think.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03But, it's the first time I've ever done a braided style,

0:12:03 > 0:12:07so hopefully, they see that and they like it.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11I don't think I've breathed for the past hour.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- It's not as perfect, but it will do.- Done?- Yeah.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28Thank you, guys. All stop!

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Step away from the hair.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Denise and Alain will be looking for well-defined plaits

0:12:34 > 0:12:36and a good overall design.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Let the judgements commence.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39So, let's have a chat with Annie.

0:12:45 > 0:12:50Annie, question. Did you intend for her to look this German?

0:12:51 > 0:12:53I was going for more pagan.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56If she had two steins in her hand...

0:12:56 > 0:13:00You can see the shape, basket weaves, it's not easy.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02You can see exactly what it is.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06I like the way that you didn't use any elastic band on the end,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09but just a backcombing effect.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Don't be afraid to frame the face

0:13:11 > 0:13:16and really give a little bit more attention to the finish itself.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19It's got a nice S shape on your weave, so it's not a diagonal

0:13:19 > 0:13:22with, it's a nice S, and the way you've followed the hair through.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25- I didn't notice that. - Which is lovely.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28- I think it's a good attempt, really good attempt.- Thank you.

0:13:34 > 0:13:39This is unusual, to see birdcage technique, and you can see

0:13:39 > 0:13:42through the transparency that it criss-crosses itself.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45So you have created a great hairstyle.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48We can turn it right round and there's interest from all angles

0:13:48 > 0:13:52- and it's very neat, and your lines are lovely.- I like it really much.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53Cool. Thank you.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02Great. Really good effect,

0:14:02 > 0:14:05and you can see the distinctive shape.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07This is nice and neat. Your channels are nice.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11The ones that are a bit untidy, they're hidden, but this is lovely.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14This work here is really intricate.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Great effect, and I do think that choosing blonde hair

0:14:17 > 0:14:19is a good, good idea.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23Really the roots comes out and the texture comes out a lot stronger.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25Thank you very much.

0:14:29 > 0:14:30It's a little bit untidy,

0:14:30 > 0:14:33so there's not enough definition between each plait.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36It's kind of got, I hate to use the word,

0:14:36 > 0:14:38a slight birds-nesty feel going on.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41The tightness is missing.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45The cleanness of it. If it was a lot cleaner, it would have worked.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48It's almost like you want to lift all these plaits up.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- You can actually create more of a style.- Thank you.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01- Mmm!- That's fab. - It's looking really clean.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Let's see the braids.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06We have the classic braid.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09French braid on the back, fishtail on the side,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12and the bow. Nice technique, huh?

0:15:12 > 0:15:16This is the simplicity of the shape we are looking for, but overall,

0:15:16 > 0:15:21the symmetry, the finishing of the bows, it's a good attempt.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23You seem almost a bit surprised

0:15:23 > 0:15:25by the positivity from the judges there.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28I am, I mean, I'm not a braider, I don't braid hair.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32- Before we move on, are we all agreed that Laura is a natural?- I like it.

0:15:40 > 0:15:45- Look at this lady. It's like she's from the future.- Yeah.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49You made a strong statement with this technique, which is fantastic.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52It really is embroidery on here, actually.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56I would like to have seen more of these. So tight.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Your fingers must be raw by doing it as tight as that.

0:15:59 > 0:16:00It doesn't even look real.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04The overall feels like we don't see the small braiding in it.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07You've got to lift it up to see what's going on around it.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Talking about mohawk, make it look completely like a mo,

0:16:11 > 0:16:15and really stand it up as much as possible, so you can reveal

0:16:15 > 0:16:19all your hard work, because it's pretty incredible.

0:16:19 > 0:16:20Dynamite!

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- She's just showing off now. - Yes, this is pretty, I think.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32- Very pretty.- Really cute.- It is.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36Even if you just lifted it a tiny bit, just a little bit

0:16:36 > 0:16:40so it flowed in with the hairline, but your plait's nice and tight.

0:16:40 > 0:16:45Very interesting techniques, so you are the only one using, how many?

0:16:45 > 0:16:49- 11 strands.- 11 strands! Look at that. That's pretty effective.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52I think I would have wanted to move it just a bit

0:16:52 > 0:16:57so we can see all the strands and see the basket you created in there.

0:16:57 > 0:16:58But it's very pretty.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02Well done, guys. Fabulous work.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04You're all sickeningly talented.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08So before the next challenge, go and grab yourself some tea and biccies.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- Who shone for you?- Dominika.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16You know, her plaits were very neat and tight.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20I think Marvin's technically getting really good.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23During the challenge, I kind of got a bit angry with myself.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27I didn't think that I was doing exactly what I set out to do,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30but after the comments from the judges, yeah, I was very happy.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33I was kind of in my element. I was so pleased.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41Now it's time to move the challenge to the blockheads.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44This week, Denise and Alain want accurately cut layers

0:17:44 > 0:17:49and beautifully-rolled rollers and big, big, big hair.

0:17:49 > 0:17:54This round is all about mastering a basic haircutting technique.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56This week, it's layering.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00The judges want the stylist to perfectly replicate this,

0:18:00 > 0:18:03a long, layered cut, set to perfection in rollers,

0:18:03 > 0:18:05to look just like this.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10As we know, this is all about precision and accuracy.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11What am I looking at, Denise?

0:18:11 > 0:18:14You're looking at a classical, long layered haircut

0:18:14 > 0:18:16and a very traditional set.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Now, I think Alain can maybe explain the haircut.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22This is a very symmetrical haircut.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Be very, very strict on the balance.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Exact same lengths either side.

0:18:27 > 0:18:32Once the hair is cut, it must be set in rollers and styled.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35This is the finished look that we'd like you to recreate,

0:18:35 > 0:18:39so use your common sense and your creativity to follow this exactly.

0:18:39 > 0:18:40OK.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Don't forget the judges will be ranking you at the end of this,

0:18:43 > 0:18:45so do your very best.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48You have two hours and 15 minutes in which to complete this task.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Go and reacquaint yourself with your old friends,

0:18:51 > 0:18:52the blockheads over there.

0:18:52 > 0:18:53And off you go. Good luck.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57The long layered haircut is used to give body

0:18:57 > 0:19:01and volume to hair without changing the overall length.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11The stylists have been given a sectioning pattern,

0:19:11 > 0:19:12or map, to help them.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15First time I've ever seen this in my life.

0:19:19 > 0:19:20I'm scared.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26I'm not sure how I'm feeling.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Trying to get my head around the cutting pattern we've been

0:19:29 > 0:19:32given, so, I hope that's what I'm supposed to be doing.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41I call this one just out of the shower, and this one grandma's hair.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43And I would say that if you put that on Rita Ora's head,

0:19:43 > 0:19:45you would change your mind.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47- That's a good point, actually, yes. - Ah, you see!

0:19:47 > 0:19:48Is it tricky cutting hair like this?

0:19:48 > 0:19:50I believe it is a little tricky.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52You just have to make sure your elevation is right,

0:19:52 > 0:19:56your angle is perfect, and that will give you a perfect balance.

0:19:56 > 0:19:57The way you are speaking,

0:19:57 > 0:19:59I'm envisaging a complete disaster out there.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03For beginners attempting long layers,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07the hair should first be divided into four large sections,

0:20:07 > 0:20:11one centre parting and a diagonal running from ear to ear.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16The next step is to cut a guide layer.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19This will determine the overall length of all of the other

0:20:19 > 0:20:20layers in the haircut.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23At the moment, I'm a bit scared,

0:20:23 > 0:20:25because I don't really know what I'm doing.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29The guide layer is cut by pulling a front section of hair forward

0:20:29 > 0:20:33and cutting at a 45 degree angle.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36The first cut you make is the most important cut,

0:20:36 > 0:20:38it's the first line of where you're going.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Once you've cut...

0:20:40 > 0:20:43Oh, man, I don't like this challenge.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47..you've created that line, and you have to stick with it now.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49I've gone far too short on my first cut.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Get your first cut wrong, you're gone.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56An identical guide must then be cut on the other side of the head

0:20:56 > 0:20:59to achieve a symmetrical haircut.

0:20:59 > 0:21:00This cut's all about symmetry,

0:21:00 > 0:21:03so that your haircut is completely balanced.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07It's a little bit longer on this side, so I need to go in again.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11As you can see here, completely different lengths.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15The guide layers are then lifted up to a 90 degree angle

0:21:15 > 0:21:20so the remaining layers can be matched to them.

0:21:20 > 0:21:21My...!

0:21:21 > 0:21:24In the hairdressing world,

0:21:24 > 0:21:27cutting in this position is known as elevation.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30I'm just trying to get my angle straight.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33Just trying my hardest.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39I see hairdressers do it all the time and make it look so easy,

0:21:39 > 0:21:41and it's not very easy at all.

0:21:42 > 0:21:47The trick to cutting perfectly at elevation is to create tension.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51It's all about the collaboration between the comb and the scissors,

0:21:51 > 0:21:54knowing that once you reach the right position of your section,

0:21:54 > 0:21:57you hold it tight, it's locked, nothing is moving.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00And then you can cut into the movement.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06As soon as you go to reach for something else,

0:22:06 > 0:22:10that section's going to move, tension's not the same,

0:22:10 > 0:22:11the angle's changed.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13We are talking precise technique.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15It's going to be really difficult for them to achieve that.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18I have no idea.

0:22:19 > 0:22:23Basically, the whole thing is not right.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27Take this bit from underneath, it should get to that, but it doesn't.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29So I've done it wrong.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31- Hour and a bit left.- Oh, God.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33- How's it going?- Badly.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37- I've done it wrong.- What have you done wrong?- Typical mistake.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39I've done it at the wrong angle,

0:22:39 > 0:22:42so it's not got the layering effect.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44I've done it more sort of...

0:22:44 > 0:22:46Ah.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49The only other way to do it would be just to cut it shorter,

0:22:49 > 0:22:51but I can't cut it shorter.

0:22:51 > 0:22:52Relax, deep breaths, OK.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55You'll get your head around, I know you will. It's fine.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59- Hi, Annie. How are you finding this challenge?- Really difficult.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02Really difficult. Have you layered hair before at all?

0:23:02 > 0:23:05I'm going up, and then I'm slightly bringing it to the angle,

0:23:05 > 0:23:09and then I've nearly cut my finger, so I kind of rectified it.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11Well, you're a nurse, you can deal with a cut.

0:23:11 > 0:23:12I can cope with that.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16Once the stylists are happy with the symmetry of their cut,

0:23:16 > 0:23:18they must set the hair.

0:23:19 > 0:23:20I've finished with the cut,

0:23:20 > 0:23:22and I've checked it, and it's to my satisfaction.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24I'm going to start putting the rollers in,

0:23:24 > 0:23:26because I would hate for it not to dry and set.

0:23:28 > 0:23:29I'm setting behind the rollers now.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Do I have enough time, I'm not quite sure?

0:23:31 > 0:23:34Because I don't know how long it's going to take to put underneath.

0:23:34 > 0:23:35I hope it's quite strong.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41- This is very important, that when you set the hair in rollers, you create volume and bounce.- OK.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43One of the pitfalls with rollers is that

0:23:43 > 0:23:45if you don't get the ends in,

0:23:45 > 0:23:48you create a thing called a fishhook end,

0:23:48 > 0:23:50which completely ruins the finish.

0:23:50 > 0:23:55Very important to get that tail comb and tuck them in, smooth them,

0:23:55 > 0:23:59hold them to your fingers, and then just guide them round, nice

0:23:59 > 0:24:03- and slowly, and then you just shake the roller.- A little shimmy.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05Shimmy, shimmy, shimmy.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Even the tension, and we put the clip in.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17I'm hoping I can hide the dodgy cut with the rollers.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20As long as I can get the set looking right, I might get away with the cut.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Timing is key to achieving the perfect set.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28How does this work?

0:24:30 > 0:24:33The stylists should allow at least 35 minutes for the hair

0:24:33 > 0:24:37to dry completely, and another 10 for it to cool down.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38Oop!

0:24:41 > 0:24:43I'm the first one under the dryer,

0:24:43 > 0:24:46and I'm happy that I managed to get my rollers in on time.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49They weren't the neatest, but with the time that we've got left,

0:24:49 > 0:24:50I just need to get it dry.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52It's not about precision at the moment,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55it's just about getting it dry so I can get the finished look.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57The way a wet set works is heat.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00You have very wet hair, and it's dried at high heat.

0:25:00 > 0:25:05The wetness softens the hair, the heat dries it into the mould,

0:25:05 > 0:25:07and the coolness sets it.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11With only 45 minutes to go,

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Laura has yet to get her blockhead under the dryer.

0:25:16 > 0:25:17I'm totally crumbling.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20I think the pressure of trying to get the haircut done,

0:25:20 > 0:25:25I've just like, I didn't count the rollers, so, I've kind of started

0:25:25 > 0:25:29with a pattern and I'm still going with the pattern, but I think I'll

0:25:29 > 0:25:32just put myself under an immense amount of pressure, because it's

0:25:32 > 0:25:35something I do all the time and I'm really worried that it's not right.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48Oh, my gosh, that was far too much pressure for me. Seriously.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Literally, that completely threw me.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56- How's it going? - It's cooking. That's enough.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59I can't believe actual human beings put their head in these things.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Yeah, I did that once, but with metal rollers.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03It wasn't a good idea.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Nuclear hot on your head.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07Yeah, a bit. And your make-up melts.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09She's fine. She doesn't complain.

0:26:09 > 0:26:10Looking relaxed.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12How long is it going to be in here for?

0:26:12 > 0:26:1620 minutes before it's finished, I will switch to the really

0:26:16 > 0:26:18cold temperature to cool it down for five minutes.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20- Is that the secret?- Yes!

0:26:20 > 0:26:21- Cool it down?- Has to cool down.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24- Have you told anybody else that? - No.- Great.

0:26:24 > 0:26:2730 minutes left, everyone, by the way. 30 minutes.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Just checking that it's all dry

0:26:33 > 0:26:38and there's no wet patches, because with roller sets, there likes

0:26:38 > 0:26:41to be that sneaky little wet patch that will flop your whole style.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45For the curls to hold their shape, the rollers must be allowed

0:26:45 > 0:26:48to completely cool down before being removed.

0:26:48 > 0:26:5010 minutes!

0:26:50 > 0:26:52Is that going to be enough, Laura?

0:26:52 > 0:26:54Yeah, no, it will be fine.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Still a little bit wet.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58- Well, blow on it.- Come on then.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00Come and blow on it for me.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Just trying to style it out now.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12But I'm not sure what to do, to be honest with you.

0:27:15 > 0:27:16I'm not too far off.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19If I say so myself, I think I've done all right.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22I like the curls I've created, and I was a bit worried that I dried

0:27:22 > 0:27:26it too much, but it's kind of softened up as I've pulled it out.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31It's still a little bit wet on one side,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33just really disappointed in myself.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37It's like my mum.

0:27:41 > 0:27:42That's it, guys. Time's up.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Thank you very much.

0:27:45 > 0:27:46Annie, step back!

0:27:48 > 0:27:51The judges will be assessing the quality of the curls,

0:27:51 > 0:27:55and the bounce of the set, and the symmetry and shape of the haircut.

0:27:55 > 0:27:56Let's go to Ebuni first.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08Ooh! It's fallen out of it at the back, the curl.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11It dried really, really hard, so I tried to pull it out to make

0:28:11 > 0:28:14it look a bit more, but I think I overdid it a little bit.

0:28:14 > 0:28:15You overpulled it.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18- You stretched it out while it was still actually quite hot.- OK.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20So in fact when you took the rollers out,

0:28:20 > 0:28:22- you should have waited a little bit longer.- OK.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27What are you doing now?

0:28:27 > 0:28:31I'm going to wet their hair down to check for precision.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33Two hours it took to do that, and he's destroyed it.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36- Yeah, he's destroyed it, yeah.- 30 seconds.

0:28:36 > 0:28:37Would you do this to a client?

0:28:37 > 0:28:41I don't have to check for a client, I know that it's good.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44- Because it will be perfect, because it's a Pichon.- Oui!

0:28:46 > 0:28:47The balance is pretty good.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50The hair comes to the same length at the front.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52Let me check the top layers.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58You can see you've missed that, quite a few bits there. All right?

0:29:06 > 0:29:08It's a little bit straight on the edges,

0:29:08 > 0:29:10it's almost like it didn't dry.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13The minute I do that, and actually feel it,

0:29:13 > 0:29:15actually a good set in there.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18Yeah, the only thing about the cut is that you have lost the whole

0:29:18 > 0:29:19length of the sides.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21It's just your angle.

0:29:21 > 0:29:24Just change your angle to keep that length.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26So, good cut, yes or no?

0:29:26 > 0:29:29Well, not sufficient, really, for what we were asking.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37Well, straightaway, I can see some fishhook ends.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39You can see that's crinkled on the end.

0:29:39 > 0:29:43So that's where it caught, but it's looking a little bit lopsided.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Maybe if we shake it up a little bit and move it.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49You see, you haven't exposed these. Look at that.

0:29:49 > 0:29:54- It was in there hiding.- Your lines are clean, it's a clean job.

0:29:54 > 0:29:56So it's not a bad effort.

0:30:01 > 0:30:06- Oh, dear. It didn't dry, did it?- No. - And it's completely straight hair.

0:30:06 > 0:30:10Overall, the set just didn't work.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15- It's mainly the front that you left too long.- OK.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18- And made you not cut enough on the angles.- Sure.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26Let's dissect it, Denise and Alain.

0:30:26 > 0:30:30I like the effect that you built into the curl. Beautiful texture.

0:30:30 > 0:30:34But it's fairly even and the distribution works really well.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37It's got a fabulous bounce. Let's feel the weight line here.

0:30:37 > 0:30:38Very good.

0:30:40 > 0:30:46- Her actual shape is there. - So, what is the overall verdict?

0:30:46 > 0:30:50- Yeah, really good.- Really good, very good.- Cool, thank you.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57Katie, don't look so disappointed!

0:30:57 > 0:30:59The top section was great, you got a nice height in it,

0:30:59 > 0:31:02but you pulled it down at the back, which has caused you to collapse

0:31:02 > 0:31:04- a little bit and lose your shape. - Mm-hmm.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09Your length in the front is good, you know.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12Your angle is pretty good, OK?

0:31:17 > 0:31:21- She's definitely wild.- I know!- Yeah. You've got a nice bend in there.

0:31:21 > 0:31:25Just lost it on the height here, and it's completely flat,

0:31:25 > 0:31:32- so it's just lost the bounce. - The angle is not strong enough.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34And you didn't cut enough, I'm afraid.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38The judges must now rank the stylists for their efforts,

0:31:38 > 0:31:39from top to bottom.

0:31:39 > 0:31:43- This line is not good enough, should have been stronger.- Yeah.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46You've got to think, we're amateurs at the end of the day, it's not going to be perfect.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50And the haircut here, look, we've got a whole big chunk that looks like it's been bitten.

0:31:50 > 0:31:55I've no idea where I'm going to be, top or bottom, anywhere, nothing!

0:31:55 > 0:31:56No idea.

0:31:56 > 0:31:57The higher the stylist is ranked,

0:31:57 > 0:32:00the greater their choice of hair for the next round.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03I think I am worried about the ranking, yeah,

0:32:03 > 0:32:06it's going to determine what happens tomorrow, so hopefully, I'm

0:32:06 > 0:32:09maybe somewhere in the middle, where I can still have a selection of

0:32:09 > 0:32:11hair types.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14- OK, we know now.- Sorted. - OK, we know which one it is.

0:32:14 > 0:32:18The judges have reached a decision.

0:32:18 > 0:32:22In bottom place this week is...

0:32:26 > 0:32:27..Laura.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29Yup, I was expecting that.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33In sixth place this week is...

0:32:35 > 0:32:38..Annie.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42'Kobi is fifth, Ebuni fourth and Katie third.'

0:32:44 > 0:32:47- Pleasantly surprised?- Shocked!- Yeah?

0:32:48 > 0:32:54Obviously, it's between Marvin and Dominika.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00First place is...

0:33:00 > 0:33:04- Dominika. Congratulations. Well-deserved.- Thank you!

0:33:04 > 0:33:07- Fabulous work.- Oh, so glad!

0:33:07 > 0:33:10'So, Dominika will have her pick of the hair for tomorrow's

0:33:10 > 0:33:11'freestyle challenge.'

0:33:11 > 0:33:16I can reveal that tomorrow's freestyle challenge is...

0:33:17 > 0:33:19..making hats out of hair.

0:33:19 > 0:33:24- Wicked!- You will be making hats out of hair, competitively, tomorrow.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27So, let's make our way to the board here.

0:33:31 > 0:33:36- Is one a man?- Is one a man? There is, he's a guy, look.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38Dominika, you came first in the blockhead challenge.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41- I'm going to go for D.- Yup.

0:33:43 > 0:33:48Brown hair, very long, medium thick, yeah, should be good to work with.

0:33:48 > 0:33:54Laura, you got the guy. I think it's a good thing, it's exciting!

0:33:54 > 0:33:57I'm not sure what he's going to look like with a hat on his head,

0:33:57 > 0:34:01- but we'll give it a go.- I can't wait to find out. Have a good night, OK?

0:34:01 > 0:34:02I'll see you tomorrow.

0:34:07 > 0:34:12- So, big day yesterday. Who shone for you?- Dominika, for me.

0:34:12 > 0:34:15- She is a talent, isn't she?- She is, because she plans what she is doing,

0:34:15 > 0:34:17she thinks it out and she is very together.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19Who is struggling a little bit?

0:34:19 > 0:34:23Laura, yesterday, wasn't very happy with herself, even the setting,

0:34:23 > 0:34:25- the finish of it. - Annie is struggling a little bit.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28She was weak in the cutting and setting.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31- Overall, I'm worried for Annie. - Good morning, good morning!

0:34:31 > 0:34:33- ALL:- Morning!

0:34:33 > 0:34:37It's the big one! The challenge is to make hats out of hair.

0:34:37 > 0:34:41My advice is, make sure that you use the model's real hair

0:34:41 > 0:34:43within your look.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46The hat by itself has to have a defined shape

0:34:46 > 0:34:48and also a very beautiful finish.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52So, remember the brief, because we will be judging on that.

0:34:52 > 0:34:58So, Fez, Fedora, Porkpie, do what you've got to do.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00But remember, make it extraordinary.

0:35:00 > 0:35:05Time to work your magic, you have three hours, the clock starts now.

0:35:05 > 0:35:06Off you go! Good luck!

0:35:07 > 0:35:09Hi, I'm Annie.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11I'm Dominika.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13So, I've never worked with a guy with long hair,

0:35:13 > 0:35:15but I'll treat it as I would anything else.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17The pressure is on, because at the end of this round,

0:35:17 > 0:35:20the judges will be sending someone home.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22Lovely thick hair, haven't you?

0:35:22 > 0:35:26As well as using hair extensions, the stylists can use

0:35:26 > 0:35:29any of the other materials available in the prep room.

0:35:31 > 0:35:32Is that a thing?

0:35:32 > 0:35:35I've never heard of that before, making a hat out of hair, this is new to me.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38It can't be new to you, you're a model, you see models on the

0:35:38 > 0:35:42catwalk, with incredible creations that look like hats, and they're hair.

0:35:42 > 0:35:45Are we doing more towards weird, or just well crafted?

0:35:45 > 0:35:48Whatever shape they are going to create, it has to be beautiful,

0:35:48 > 0:35:53as far as the height, the element of texture, the element of shine.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56The most important thing is we don't want to see two hours in that

0:35:56 > 0:35:59preparation room making steel frames and things like that, that they

0:35:59 > 0:36:03just come out and plonk on the head. They have to work the hair.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10My plan is to create a character,

0:36:10 > 0:36:15so I'm going to think Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, I love the film

0:36:15 > 0:36:18Sweeney Todd, it's going to be sort of like a demon barber,

0:36:18 > 0:36:20but he's going to be a tailor.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23Annie, what's the plan? Tell me.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26I'm looking for a Russian style hat,

0:36:26 > 0:36:28but, like, the Nicole Scherzinger style.

0:36:28 > 0:36:33- Lady's hat, good, she is a lady.- She is a lady!- That works a lot better.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35- Have you worked with this hair type? - Never.

0:36:35 > 0:36:39So, you know what you can and cannot do when it's been relaxed chemically?

0:36:39 > 0:36:43Don't really know much about it, but I'm learning as I'm going along.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45That's what it's all about.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48I think the texture is going to work really well with the hat,

0:36:48 > 0:36:51I think it's going to hold it really well.

0:36:51 > 0:36:55Annie won't be using any props or frame in her Russian hat.

0:36:55 > 0:36:59Instead, she plans to create a fur effect using a difficult

0:36:59 > 0:37:02technique called rickracking.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06This technique involves using these pins here.

0:37:06 > 0:37:11Hold it in quite tight to the hair. Then, you just braid it through.

0:37:11 > 0:37:12Figure of eight.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16The pinned hair is then heated with a straightener

0:37:16 > 0:37:19and once taken out will be tightly curled in zigzags.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24When we take them out, it looks really cool.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32I'm making the rim of my hat,

0:37:32 > 0:37:34so it's going to literally sit on her head, like that.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37Just kind of cover the edges and make it so it doesn't stab her head.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39Which is always a good thing!

0:37:39 > 0:37:43Katie is taking inspiration from Alice in Wonderland.

0:37:43 > 0:37:48- What's the plan, what is the design of the hat?- The Mad Hatter's hat.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51- So, how are you going to make it? - I'm going to use...

0:37:51 > 0:37:54I've made my rim, which is this bit. Which goes onto the plait.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57Then the model's hair is going to be making up the rim.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00- Incredible hair, isn't it?- Beautiful. - Were you happy with your choice?

0:38:00 > 0:38:04Yeah. 100% grey, virgin hair. I like this colour myself!

0:38:04 > 0:38:07It's not actually grey hair, it's white hair.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10Each single hair has lost its pigmentation

0:38:10 > 0:38:12and that's how it becomes white.

0:38:12 > 0:38:14- Right, OK. - I'm very excited to see the result.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19The overall plan is to have, like, an amazing fascinator,

0:38:19 > 0:38:25turning hair into, like, feathers and nice spiky things.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28So, quite effective, hopefully it's going to work!

0:38:30 > 0:38:34Dominika will be making a feather topped fascinator by interweaving

0:38:34 > 0:38:39- red and burgundy extensions with the model's own hair.- Beautiful hair.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41And it's a great length.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43How are you going to deal with that amount of length?

0:38:43 > 0:38:46I'm going to be going for a very high ponytail,

0:38:46 > 0:38:49with a bit of wire in the middle to make it bulky,

0:38:49 > 0:38:53and from there, it will go kind of like feathers.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57What are you doing?

0:38:57 > 0:39:00It looks like you're attaching hair to a piece of cardboard!

0:39:00 > 0:39:01Yes, this is the brim of my hat,

0:39:01 > 0:39:05it's going to start dark at the base, then lighter at the ends.

0:39:05 > 0:39:09- Oh, OK.- Kind of like the Mad Hatter goes to Miami.- Wow.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12- Where did Miami come from? - The big floppy part on the sun hat.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14Beautiful.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17Well, that's an interesting mind you have there, Marvin!

0:39:18 > 0:39:21- So, you've started already? - Yes, starting.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23Have you got a strong look in mind?

0:39:23 > 0:39:27- Yes, my idea is going to be a big, big button.- Big button?

0:39:27 > 0:39:30So, are you going to integrate some of the model's hair?

0:39:30 > 0:39:33Yes, this bit here will be coming through the four holes,

0:39:33 > 0:39:36actually joining the button onto the hat.

0:39:36 > 0:39:40Kobi will be making his button out of florist's foam,

0:39:40 > 0:39:42wrapped in hair extensions.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47- KOBI GASPS - A button!

0:39:47 > 0:39:50- Same as me!- Is it?- Yup.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53- What are you doing with yours? - Covering it in hair.

0:39:53 > 0:39:54- Are you doing that?- Yeah.

0:39:57 > 0:40:02Basically, I just saw Laura's, she's doing a button also.

0:40:02 > 0:40:07So, I'm just going to have to make sure that when I do mine,

0:40:07 > 0:40:08it's better!

0:40:09 > 0:40:14Oh, no! Oh, no! It's fine, it's fine, it's fine.

0:40:15 > 0:40:20- Cool, thank you.- Ebuni is taking her inspiration from a children's book.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23I'm making a Cat In The Hat top hat.

0:40:23 > 0:40:27What I'm going to do is use the top half of her head to create a

0:40:27 > 0:40:30cane row for my structure to sit on, so hopefully it's nice and secure.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33Then the back, I'm going to backcomb it, to get all of that

0:40:33 > 0:40:37volume and shape, to hopefully make her a little bit more catlike.

0:40:41 > 0:40:42And how are you finding this hair texture?

0:40:42 > 0:40:45Because it's quite curly and...

0:40:45 > 0:40:48Yeah, so I'm just using the small crimpers to put in some texture.

0:40:48 > 0:40:52- So, you're turning European hair into...- Afro-Caribbean, kind of.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55- Absolutely.- I'm just trying to make it a bit more obedient.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58- So it works well.- Yes.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03As well as crimping the hair, Marvin is adding hair extensions

0:41:03 > 0:41:07and backcombing the whole lot into a beehive,

0:41:07 > 0:41:10which will form the top of his sun hat.

0:41:10 > 0:41:11In this challenge,

0:41:11 > 0:41:15it's very important that you put the model's real hair into the hat.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17It has to be in that structure, somewhere.

0:41:17 > 0:41:20It can't just be a fake head of hair, moulded onto a hat

0:41:20 > 0:41:22and plonked on top of the head.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26Katie is making the top of her hat by covering chicken wire

0:41:26 > 0:41:30in black, grey and white synthetic extensions.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33Mine is looking slightly Halloween!

0:41:33 > 0:41:36- THEY LAUGH - It's OK, it's OK.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38Pfft!

0:41:38 > 0:41:41Dominika is working on the centre of her fascinator.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44I backcomb it, then I put the wire,

0:41:44 > 0:41:48then I wrap the wire with elastic, tight.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51So then, I put the plait around it, and I should secure it,

0:41:51 > 0:41:53it should be fine.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55The fascinator will be topped with feathers made

0:41:55 > 0:42:00- out of the model's natural hair. - So, I used a very strong hairspray.

0:42:00 > 0:42:05And then, with straighteners, I just slowly smooth it across,

0:42:05 > 0:42:09so when it gets heated, it just seals together.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12And then, you kind of have this plastic effect.

0:42:18 > 0:42:19Oh, wow!

0:42:21 > 0:42:22That looks so cool.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25Having finished rickracking the model's hair,

0:42:25 > 0:42:28Annie brushes it with a stiff natural bristle brush to

0:42:28 > 0:42:31create a texture that resembles fur for her Russian hat.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34She then moulds and pins it into shape.

0:42:34 > 0:42:38So, I'm just going to put a few extensions in at the back.

0:42:38 > 0:42:43So, this is supposed to look like her actual hair underneath the hat.

0:42:43 > 0:42:48Just trying to fix it in as best I can.

0:42:48 > 0:42:53Katie is using the model's natural hair to form the brim of her hat.

0:42:54 > 0:42:58I've got to get this right, dress the curls and get the hat on,

0:42:58 > 0:43:01which is looking a bit Herman Munster-esque!

0:43:01 > 0:43:04- I'm a bit worried about that bit. - SHE LAUGHS

0:43:06 > 0:43:08Sorry if I gouge your head, let me know!

0:43:10 > 0:43:12Come on, come on, come on!

0:43:14 > 0:43:15Ah!

0:43:15 > 0:43:20It's so not going to the plan, this is so not going to the plan.

0:43:20 > 0:43:22Dominika is using hair extensions, hairspray

0:43:22 > 0:43:26and foil moulds to try to give her fascinator a felted look.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31I'm just worried that I'm running behind the time.

0:43:31 > 0:43:35- I'm late.- What's going on? - It wasn't drying.

0:43:35 > 0:43:38I put the foil on top of it, to get the sharp shape,

0:43:38 > 0:43:40and I thought it was going to dry underneath, the hairspray.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43It didn't dry. So... Yeah.

0:43:43 > 0:43:47It's kind of weird, seeing things not go according to plan for you.

0:43:48 > 0:43:49We'll see.

0:43:51 > 0:43:56The clock is ticking. 20 minutes left, guys. Get it done!

0:43:57 > 0:44:01I'm going to change it, because it's not as clean as I wanted it to be.

0:44:01 > 0:44:03I think it looks like someone has stabbed a needle

0:44:03 > 0:44:06through his head, so I'm going to make it look a bit bloody!

0:44:08 > 0:44:10Both Laura and Katie are using

0:44:10 > 0:44:13temporary coloured sprays on their hats.

0:44:14 > 0:44:19I'm hopefully spraying a pattern onto the hair. Wish me luck!

0:44:24 > 0:44:26Let's see what we've got.

0:44:26 > 0:44:28It's too big!

0:44:28 > 0:44:33Marvin has miscalculated the size of the hole at the centre of his brim.

0:44:33 > 0:44:38Back in a second. The model's hat is just a little bit too big.

0:44:38 > 0:44:44So, I'm going to make an extra layer to go underneath the actual

0:44:44 > 0:44:47base of the hat.

0:44:49 > 0:44:50It's even better now.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11- Hey, how are you doing?- Hi.- Whoa!

0:45:11 > 0:45:15Can I ask you, where is the model's own hair, within this?

0:45:15 > 0:45:18OK, so I did a braid at the top of the head,

0:45:18 > 0:45:21and that's what it's sitting on. So, it's secured to that.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24- Then her hair is all this around the side, as well.- OK.

0:45:24 > 0:45:28- So, have you put any of her hair into this hat?- Not into the hat.

0:45:28 > 0:45:29Not into the hat.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32I don't know if they didn't like it,

0:45:32 > 0:45:34I felt like they wanted your hair in the hat.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38Oh, well, nothing I can do now. Well, there is another person who has done a similar kind of hat,

0:45:38 > 0:45:41and theirs doesn't look like... I don't know.

0:45:41 > 0:45:45Annie? Annie? Is any of her hair in that, or is it just...

0:45:45 > 0:45:48- That's her hair.- This is her hair? - Yeah.- Oh, wow.

0:45:50 > 0:45:53Three minutes left, guys.

0:45:53 > 0:45:56That's 180 seconds left!

0:46:00 > 0:46:03Well, I don't really have any more extensions, but what can I do?

0:46:05 > 0:46:09It is what it is, I'm just going to have to deal with whatever they have to say.

0:46:13 > 0:46:16And time's up!

0:46:16 > 0:46:19Step away from your models, please.

0:46:20 > 0:46:23You're done.

0:46:23 > 0:46:27Please wait patiently, judgment is coming!

0:46:38 > 0:46:42Question, and my favourite one - does it wobble when it walks?

0:46:44 > 0:46:47'Denise and Alain will be looking to see if the designs fit

0:46:47 > 0:46:53'the freestyle brief, and if they stand up to 360-degree scrutiny.'

0:46:54 > 0:46:56It could do...

0:46:56 > 0:46:59Force eight gale, this is definitely a Cossack Princess that could

0:46:59 > 0:47:02go right into the snow, and this is definitely a hat.

0:47:02 > 0:47:03And I can feel fur,

0:47:03 > 0:47:08so I think the rickrack technique was the perfect thing to do.

0:47:08 > 0:47:12I like it very much, beautiful shape, it's a Cossack hat, you can

0:47:12 > 0:47:15see the inspiration, you know, this is what it's all about,

0:47:15 > 0:47:18this is what we asked for and you delivered it.

0:47:18 > 0:47:19It flows, the whole thing flows.

0:47:19 > 0:47:24You've got the real hair, you've got the fake hair coming through,

0:47:24 > 0:47:27in fact, I felt that the fake hair was the real hair.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30- So there is a complete flow, it's completely...- It's fantastic.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43- Is that a wobble? Am I seeing a wobble?- No, that's a flow!

0:47:43 > 0:47:44What's the difference?

0:47:44 > 0:47:48- A wobble is insecure, and a flow is the flow of the hat.- OK.

0:47:48 > 0:47:52Love the size, love the proportions, you have utilised the hair.

0:47:52 > 0:47:55There is an element of My Fair Lady in there.

0:47:55 > 0:47:58But the only thing is, the finish underneath,

0:47:58 > 0:48:00because underneath the hat is very important,

0:48:00 > 0:48:03and underneath here, I can see the cardboard.

0:48:03 > 0:48:07So overall, the finish is a little bit untidy.

0:48:07 > 0:48:09Yeah, it's not defined,

0:48:09 > 0:48:12it's not refined as much as we'd like to see, you know?

0:48:22 > 0:48:27- So, the big question, is it a hat?- Is it a hat?

0:48:27 > 0:48:28It's on the edge of it.

0:48:28 > 0:48:33I would define it as a big doughnut as much as a hat.

0:48:33 > 0:48:36It is on the edge of being a hat, but you have used the model's

0:48:36 > 0:48:38own hair, incorporated that into the design,

0:48:38 > 0:48:42which carries all the way through the back, so the continuity is good.

0:48:42 > 0:48:43The two flow into each other.

0:48:43 > 0:48:47Is it exactly what we want? We will have to debate about it.

0:49:01 > 0:49:04I can't see the model's own hair through this hat.

0:49:04 > 0:49:09You could have incorporated this beautiful hair through this, but you've had this fabulous hair

0:49:09 > 0:49:12and you've literally just rolled it up.

0:49:12 > 0:49:16I tried to backcomb it, but I wasn't really strong with it.

0:49:16 > 0:49:17It looks like you've just hidden it.

0:49:17 > 0:49:22It is a hat, but the model's own hair is not in that hat.

0:49:22 > 0:49:23That's right.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39- Fascinator.- This is a fascinator. This is absolutely a fascinator.

0:49:39 > 0:49:41- Which is a kind of hat. - Which is a hat as well.

0:49:41 > 0:49:43If you've never seen one made out of hair, this is it.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46The technique was really well applied, well done.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49I'm not sure myself if I would have cut it at the base,

0:49:49 > 0:49:51I know you wanted to feel it properly.

0:49:51 > 0:49:55It would have been nice to see it a little bigger,

0:49:55 > 0:49:58a little bit more shape, because this is gorgeous to see.

0:49:58 > 0:50:00The finish is absolutely beautiful.

0:50:00 > 0:50:04- You incorporate hat and hair all in one flow.- Very defined.

0:50:04 > 0:50:06I can't see pins, I can't fault it.

0:50:06 > 0:50:09- I will take them away while the going's good!- Thank you.

0:50:25 > 0:50:29- She could definitely go to the tea party!- I love it.

0:50:29 > 0:50:32I love the finish, the fact that you have two different textures,

0:50:32 > 0:50:37curly and the hat over the top, I love the rim, the way you have

0:50:37 > 0:50:41utilised her own hair into it, it's very regular, you just have to

0:50:41 > 0:50:46define it a little touch to make a perfect roundness, but very little.

0:50:46 > 0:50:49And then, you've put the top, the top is incredible,

0:50:49 > 0:50:52because of the colour, because of the texture, and I love the stencils.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54This is one of the best,

0:50:54 > 0:50:58if not the best Mad Hatter made out of hair that I have ever seen.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01Where does this lady end and the crazy begin?

0:51:01 > 0:51:04- No visible signs of it being secured.- Where is the join?

0:51:04 > 0:51:07She's done it so beautifully, you can't see the join.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11- OK, there is one pin.- I knew you were going to get that!- She got it.

0:51:11 > 0:51:13- Did you see it?- No!

0:51:13 > 0:51:17Can I just say, there is only one other person in the room that that hat would suit.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20- This guy, right here. We were all thinking it, come on!- Absolutely.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23Come on, I've got to try it on... Not today!

0:51:41 > 0:51:45- Really watch... watch your eyes, Denise!- Yes.

0:51:45 > 0:51:48- I am struggling to see hat.- OK.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51So, I was going more fascinator than hat.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54Yeah, a fascinator for a man would be difficult to accept,

0:51:54 > 0:51:57- to a certain degree.- It's supposed to be a needle in a button.

0:51:57 > 0:51:59It's a needle in a button? OK.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02It's more like a scaffolding pole fell from the sky,

0:52:02 > 0:52:04went right through a Polo mint and just caught you!

0:52:04 > 0:52:08- Why didn't you put it here? - I think it's just the placing...

0:52:08 > 0:52:10Because if I was to move it...

0:52:10 > 0:52:13I mean, it's very solidly done, but if I were to move this...

0:52:13 > 0:52:16- Don't listen to the crack! In actual fact...- I think that was his skull!

0:52:16 > 0:52:20In fact, there is a cleaner shape there, so in actual fact,

0:52:20 > 0:52:23you could create a great shape here, it's still a bit too feminine.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25OK.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28OK, guys, you know what comes next.

0:52:28 > 0:52:30It's the tough bit, the judges are going to put their thinking

0:52:30 > 0:52:34caps on and they are going to decide who has just won the freestyle

0:52:34 > 0:52:36round and who is about to go home.

0:52:36 > 0:52:39So, take five, we'll see you in a bit.

0:52:46 > 0:52:50I really want to stay, like, I'm just loving the experience,

0:52:50 > 0:52:55- so for me to go home, I would be so sad.- I don't know if it was good.

0:52:55 > 0:53:00I think it was to a high standard, but if it wasn't a hat,

0:53:00 > 0:53:04it didn't fit the brief, so, technically, I could be going home.

0:53:04 > 0:53:08I don't feel safe at all, actually, and I don't think they got it,

0:53:08 > 0:53:10I don't think they were in the world that I was in.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13So, a bit disappointed, but I don't think they understood.

0:53:13 > 0:53:17So, someone is about to win the freestyle round.

0:53:17 > 0:53:21- Who are the front runners?- Well, three have really impressed me.

0:53:21 > 0:53:26- Annie, Dominika and Katie.- Annie has come from nowhere, hasn't she?

0:53:26 > 0:53:28She had a disaster in the blockhead round.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30Annie has really pulled her socks up,

0:53:30 > 0:53:33she has risen to the challenge, and it was beautiful,

0:53:33 > 0:53:35she used a fantastic technique, it was excellent.

0:53:35 > 0:53:40- She really did come from the bottom up.- But, who is leaving?

0:53:40 > 0:53:41That's what I want to know.

0:53:41 > 0:53:45Well, I would say that Laura is definitely in trouble.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48She was very strong in the first round, in the plaits,

0:53:48 > 0:53:50that was stunning and absolutely beautiful.

0:53:50 > 0:53:55- But on the set, just didn't reach the mark.- Anybody else?

0:53:55 > 0:53:58Ebuni, definitely, on the last challenge,

0:53:58 > 0:54:00she didn't pull it off, let's face it.

0:54:00 > 0:54:04Also, we believe Marvin, just on the edge,

0:54:04 > 0:54:07it looked good from the top, it could have been a lot more refined.

0:54:07 > 0:54:10He has a problem finishing the hair, I think.

0:54:10 > 0:54:12Clearly, you have some tough decisions to make.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15We have, because to choose the winner is definitely a tough task.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17And to choose the loser, too.

0:54:17 > 0:54:20Let's just say a bunch of tough decisions,

0:54:20 > 0:54:22and we'll leave you to it.

0:54:22 > 0:54:24I'll get out of your hair. Rather you than me!

0:54:27 > 0:54:29So, I think if we've narrowed it to two...

0:54:30 > 0:54:33- The hairdressing element wasn't in there.- Yup.

0:54:35 > 0:54:39- The haircut wasn't up to shape. - Yeah.- Very different.

0:54:39 > 0:54:42You might have made up your mind. I have.

0:54:50 > 0:54:51Well, firstly,

0:54:51 > 0:54:55thank you all so much for your hard work over the last couple of days.

0:54:55 > 0:54:59You really have dazzled us with your creations.

0:54:59 > 0:55:03However, one of you has shone a little brighter than anybody

0:55:03 > 0:55:05else in the freestyle round.

0:55:05 > 0:55:07And that person is...

0:55:10 > 0:55:11..Katie.

0:55:11 > 0:55:12Congratulations.

0:55:12 > 0:55:15- APPLAUSE - Well-deserved. Fabulous.

0:55:15 > 0:55:21- Happy with that?- Yup. Very!- You deserve it, it's fabulous. Fabulous.

0:55:21 > 0:55:27So, that brings me to the yucky bit. The bit where we lose one of you.

0:55:27 > 0:55:30The judges have decided that the person we are losing this

0:55:30 > 0:55:33week is going to be...

0:55:40 > 0:55:42..Ebuni.

0:55:43 > 0:55:48- Sorry, Ebuni.- It's all right. Thanks, guys. Yeah, I'm good.

0:55:50 > 0:55:54That was the hardest decision, between Ebuni and Laura,

0:55:54 > 0:55:59- it was very difficult.- Literally, it was a hair between them!

0:55:59 > 0:56:00An absolute hair.

0:56:00 > 0:56:04But the thing with Ebuni was, she didn't listen to what we said,

0:56:04 > 0:56:07saying that you had to incorporate hair into the style.

0:56:07 > 0:56:10I definitely thought I was going home,

0:56:10 > 0:56:13so at least I've got another chance to sort of prove it to myself,

0:56:13 > 0:56:17I think, I definitely want to show the judges I can do it.

0:56:17 > 0:56:20I think I deserved to stay this week, yeah.

0:56:20 > 0:56:24It's good for me, yeah, winning the challenge. Really good!

0:56:24 > 0:56:26I'm disappointed.

0:56:26 > 0:56:28With the hat, I thought, maybe, yeah,

0:56:28 > 0:56:30but I didn't do so bad with the cutting or the braids,

0:56:30 > 0:56:34so I thought that would equal it out, but I'm just a beginner, an

0:56:34 > 0:56:37amateur at this, so I'm proud of myself for making it this far.

0:56:43 > 0:56:46'Next time on Hair...'

0:56:46 > 0:56:47Is it a beehive?

0:56:49 > 0:56:51I can't work under pressure.

0:56:51 > 0:56:53I'm just hacking at it now!

0:56:53 > 0:56:56SHE SQUEALS

0:56:56 > 0:57:00Period drama could be any period in the history of the world.

0:57:00 > 0:57:03I don't know whether the blue is cheapening it, or the blue is making it.

0:57:03 > 0:57:06It could headline a major fashion show.
