0:00:02 > 0:00:03Welcome back to Hair, and the pressure is on

0:00:03 > 0:00:06as our six remaining contestants battle it out

0:00:06 > 0:00:08to decide who'll become Britain's best amateur hairstylist.

0:00:08 > 0:00:13Last week, the stylists went head-to-head to impress the judges.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16There's not enough definition between each plait.

0:00:16 > 0:00:21Royal hairdresser Denise McAdam and celebrity stylist Alain Pichon.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23The angle's not strong enough.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27The amateur stylists did their best to perfectly plait...

0:00:27 > 0:00:30I don't think I've breathed for the past hour.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32- ..cut layers with precision... - Oh, I've no idea...

0:00:33 > 0:00:37..and create hats made out of their model's hair.

0:00:38 > 0:00:43Mum-of-two Katie won the freestyle round with her fantastical creation.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46It's the best Mad Hatter made out of hair I have ever seen...

0:00:48 > 0:00:51But sadly for part-time teacher Ebuni,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53her time in the competition was over...

0:00:53 > 0:00:55The model's own hair is not in that hat.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57..and she had to leave.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01This week, the remaining six

0:01:01 > 0:01:04will need to raise their game yet again.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06I've done a lot of practice at home.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09The contestants will have to backcomb...

0:01:09 > 0:01:12- I'm getting annoyed. - ..and pin curl to their best ability

0:01:12 > 0:01:13to stay in the competition.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18And there'll be some surprises along the way.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21Oh, my God!

0:01:21 > 0:01:24The combs and clips have been cleaned, the scissors are sharpened,

0:01:24 > 0:01:28and the judges are ready. Let's go to work on Hair.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46- Good morning, good morning, good morning.- Morning.- Morning.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51- Good week at home?- Yes.- Well, I hope you have been practising.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Because we're almost halfway through the competition,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57and these guys, the judges, want to see you step it up.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59They want to see you take it to the next level.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02And that's where you need to be if you want to move forward, guys.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05So let's not delay the inevitable.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07It's time for the first challenge.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09This week, the first challenge is...

0:02:09 > 0:02:12the beehive.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17Your beehive must stand at least 12cm from the crown.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20That's there, I've just been told about five minutes ago.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23And the vital thing for the beehive, it's all about the backcombing.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28It has to be tight, firm, a very smooth finish.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30You want a beautiful flow from the front to the back

0:02:30 > 0:02:34into the hairstyle and it should be very secure to the scalp.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36No padding. Absolutely no padding.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Padding is cheating and it will not be tolerated.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42There is one hour and 50 minutes on the clock. Let's get to it.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Time starts now. Good luck, guys.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51You OK? I'm so scared now.

0:02:51 > 0:02:52There's so much pressure.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Oh, you've got good, thick hair.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Each stylist has specified the type of hair

0:02:58 > 0:03:00they'd like to work with for this challenge.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Man, your hair is long.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08I like the bleached blonde. It's easier to get the height.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The more damaged the hair, the easier it gets.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13What is a beehive?

0:03:13 > 0:03:15It's exactly what it says. It's a beehive.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It's a conical shape

0:03:17 > 0:03:20and then finished off with a French plait coming up.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22The most important thing is the hairdressing technique

0:03:22 > 0:03:26that you learn which is backcombing and that is how we get that height.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29I said earlier, no padding. Not allowed. Why not?

0:03:29 > 0:03:31- Can't we just jam something in there?- No, no, no.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35You will see that the backcombing can work instead of padding.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38You have got enough thickness there, you do it in the right place,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40utilise all the hair from the back

0:03:40 > 0:03:44and use it to make the padding itself. Then cover it up.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46That's how you create the height and volume into it.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48You know what we call it in France?

0:03:48 > 0:03:51- What do you call it? - We call it a choucroute.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- Choucroute.- That is the sauerkraut which is represented from

0:03:54 > 0:03:58the big cabbage that you have on top of the head.

0:03:58 > 0:03:59- Big cabbage on the head?- Yes.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Have you ever had a beehive?

0:04:02 > 0:04:04- Yes!- I was talking to Alain.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06I'm wearing one right now.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10Actually, if we lift up his hat, we actually have got a beehive.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18The stylists are adding mousse, which gives hair a coarseness,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20allowing the backcombing to hold.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Kobi has also chosen to dry his model's hair upside down,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28in preparation for his backcombing.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I'm blowdrying it like Denise said last week.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Obviously, defying gravity, almost. So the hair is going upwards

0:04:35 > 0:04:37and when it comes back down, it's got lots of volume.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40I do hope that Denise is watching me do this.

0:04:40 > 0:04:4516-year-old Kobi has been doing hair since he was in primary school.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47I do love a bit of backcombing.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51He's planning a contemporary beehive

0:04:51 > 0:04:54finished with a cluster of pin curls.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59I want to create an Amy Winehouse classic beehive, iconic look.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00- So it's a 21st-century beehive?- Yes.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Is that what I'm looking for? - That's what you're looking for.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09The beehive was synonymous with the '60s.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11It exploded on to the scene

0:05:11 > 0:05:15when Audrey Hepburn wore one in Breakfast At Tiffany's.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18The style was then adopted by stars such as Diana Ross

0:05:18 > 0:05:23and Dusty Springfield, and became an instant hit in the UK.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27We're often patronised by both

0:05:27 > 0:05:30people who are managing directors' wives,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33and also the shop-floor workers.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40And thanks to do-it-yourself features in hair magazines,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42the beehive became the hairstyle of choice

0:05:42 > 0:05:44for the working-class woman.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49They styled their beehives using lots of backcombing

0:05:49 > 0:05:50and plenty of lacquer.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56As a shortcut to get height into the hair before she starts backcombing,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Annie is stacking hairbands on top of each other.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05I'm creating my base for the beehive and creating a bit of stability.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Cos we're not allowed to use padding,

0:06:07 > 0:06:09this is kind of my other option.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Annie's passion for styling hair is inspired by her mum,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18who used to be a professional hairdresser.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21She's updating a Supremes-inspired beehive

0:06:21 > 0:06:23with a long ponytail at the back.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30I hate backcombing. I've never been taught the proper technique.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34I am slightly worried about Annie. Her backcombing... It is just not.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36She is literally taking the cuticle up and down.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39You don't want this matted mess in there.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43Perfect backcombing technique is take about half-inch section,

0:06:43 > 0:06:45slightly take it forward,

0:06:45 > 0:06:47you go in with your comb into the mid-length.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49You just go down, nice and tightly.

0:06:49 > 0:06:55You take the comb out. You go in and you go down nice and tightly.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57You can see the mesh building.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00You can create up to about three or four inches, really tight.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03If the hair is backcombed correctly,

0:07:03 > 0:07:04it can easily be removed

0:07:04 > 0:07:07using conditioner and a detangling brush.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Backcombing, beehive, anything like that,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13never comes up when I'm at home so this is all new to me.

0:07:17 > 0:07:22Londoner Marvin loves working with wigs, weaves and hair extensions.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27He's planning a high-textured beehive

0:07:27 > 0:07:29finished with two French plaits.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35The powder I've just put in is called root powder.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Root powder bulks up the hair,

0:07:37 > 0:07:42creating a rough matte texture which should help to add volume.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43How do you feel the root powder

0:07:43 > 0:07:46is working with your backcombing technique?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49I feel it kind of takes out the moisture in the hair

0:07:49 > 0:07:51so it kind of makes it a bit more ratty.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53What kind of texture are you trying to reach at the end of it?

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Really trying to build, just the thickness into her hair

0:07:56 > 0:08:00so I am just trying to maximise the backcombing as much as I can.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Sometimes if you use too much of that product,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07it can be a little bit greasy.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11So I think, backcombing, the best is on dry hair,

0:08:11 > 0:08:13the best product for it is the lacquer.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Can you just tip your head forward for me?

0:08:21 > 0:08:23That's it. Perfect.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25I can whip up a beehive in next to no time,

0:08:25 > 0:08:28but I want to get the polish right, I want to get the finish right.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30I want it to look good.

0:08:32 > 0:08:37Laura loves everything to do with the 1940s and '50s.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40Her vintage beehive will be finished

0:08:40 > 0:08:44with a couple of victory rolls at the front.

0:08:44 > 0:08:45I'm going to stick with something

0:08:45 > 0:08:48that I think is quite a classic '60s look.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51I'm going to build it all from the top of the hair,

0:08:51 > 0:08:53so I'm going to start at the back,

0:08:53 > 0:08:55with a small French plait at the back,

0:08:55 > 0:08:57and then I'm going to just start building and building the hair

0:08:57 > 0:09:00so we get the lovely comb shape on top of the head.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04It's going to flow all the way round like a big Walnut Whip, essentially.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Right, right. Very interesting shape.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09So how did you learn to do this technique yourself?

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Research, really. My granny always had a good beehive

0:09:12 > 0:09:15so sort of looking at old pictures and things of my granny.

0:09:15 > 0:09:16Excellent.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21I'm very excited about the beehive, it's my favourite hairstyle.

0:09:24 > 0:09:29Polish-born Dominika takes great pride in her appearance.

0:09:29 > 0:09:35Her classic '60s beehive will also include a French roll and a fringe.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40I'm now lifting the roots even more with straighteners,

0:09:40 > 0:09:47so it's like a hot set to lift it up and get the 12cm or more.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53The stylists' beehives should reach 12cm,

0:09:53 > 0:09:57but Alain is concerned that their techniques may be falling short.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05In perfect backcombing, you need to elevate the section up...

0:10:05 > 0:10:08and start from the roots, slowly going down.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10I've seen them all working fast,

0:10:10 > 0:10:14making such an uncontrollable kind of element.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Kobi got it right.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Build up the base underneath.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Marvin is not using the right technique at all.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23He has backcombed on the top. All he's doing is

0:10:23 > 0:10:26flattening down the roots, not lift it up.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28I'm not sure he's going to reach enough height.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34I do apologise.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37I'm so pretty...

0:10:38 > 0:10:43Former fashion designer Katie loves to create ornate up-dos.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Her side-parted beehive will be finished with

0:10:48 > 0:10:50an upside-down French braid.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53You've practised enough?

0:10:53 > 0:10:54I've practised before.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57I have done a beehive before. What I usually find difficult

0:10:57 > 0:11:00is getting the shape and getting it smooth and not looking odd.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03- That is what is going to be my challenge.- Odd.- Odd.

0:11:03 > 0:11:04That's your words.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15So all I'm going to do is just create something here,

0:11:15 > 0:11:18just so that the hair can be piled up on top of it.

0:11:20 > 0:11:25Annie... It's not looking like a beehive. It is looking quite weak.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Too many pins going in. Too many pins.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33- How's it going? - It's going all right.

0:11:33 > 0:11:38You are bit of a maverick. But I have noticed a chink in the armour.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40The judges have, at least.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42They're always complaining about your finishing.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45That's your kryptonite. What is the mindset this week?

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- What are you going to do? - I'm just trying to take my time

0:11:48 > 0:11:53and have a look before I decide I'm finished, proper finished.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57- I'm behind you 100%. - Thank you very much.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01All the hair that I'm now going to backcomb

0:12:01 > 0:12:07is going to be wrapped around the base to create the beehive.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14It looks like you have got your hands full there.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- I'm doing an upside-down braid. - Is that dangerous?

0:12:17 > 0:12:21- Will gravity push the beehive out of whack?- I hope not.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Guys, 30 minutes left.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27That's half an hour left.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Once the beehives have been created, the backcombing must be disguised

0:12:34 > 0:12:38with a veil of hair to achieve the perfect finish.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39The front layer of the hair,

0:12:39 > 0:12:43it's like a soft veil going to go over this backcombing.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46I have done a lot of practice at home for this beehive.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48I just need to make it smooth.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Whack it all at the back. It should be all right.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58I have just got to make this look smooth now, with this hair.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05This is going to be slightly quiffed.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08And then it's just going to lay...

0:13:08 > 0:13:10This is going to be really straight at the back.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14I don't want to do what everyone else would assume

0:13:14 > 0:13:16would be typical beehive.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19I think Annie is in trouble.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21It is not looking like a beehive too much

0:13:21 > 0:13:25because it is pulled out way too far back.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27She is not going to reach the height.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33- How are you doing, Kobi? - All right, thank you.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35A little birdie tells me you have been taking heed

0:13:35 > 0:13:36- of what the judges have been saying. - Yes.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Jotting it down on a journal and learning it.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I'm just taking little, little comments which they say

0:13:42 > 0:13:44which will just help to improve the look so much more.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47By the way, if you are trying to take on Marvin

0:13:47 > 0:13:52in a game of "how low my jeans can go", you are never going to win.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54He is the master.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57Five minutes left, everyone. Five minutes left.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02It's gone.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08I can't work under pressure.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Those can't cover my backcombing and I'm getting annoyed.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15The more I play with it, the wonkier it goes.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27I wish I'd have had five more minutes.

0:14:31 > 0:14:35Time's up. You busy, busy bumblebees,

0:14:35 > 0:14:37step away from the beehive.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39You are done.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42WHISPERS: It has not gone well. It's awful.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Let the judgements commence.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45Let's start with Annie.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55Annie, overall, I'm a little bit disappointed.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Your backcombing's quite weak in there.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- You've got quite a lot up at the top.- How do you know it's weak?

0:14:59 > 0:15:02- What are you doing in there? - Because I can't feel it.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04There's no strength underneath.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06I'm going to check the height of it.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08It's not reaching the right height.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Is this bit of tape here, is that 12cm?

0:15:10 > 0:15:12- That's right.- OK, thank you, guys.

0:15:18 > 0:15:19Looks great.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21It's reaching the right shape.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23It's positioned in the right...

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Right in the middle.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27Right, so the main test.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's a little short. You feel this, fallen down.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32You had it a little while ago

0:15:32 > 0:15:34and then it's just gone down.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Your backcombing in here isn't even here.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41It's completely gone, cos you were a bit too rapid with it,

0:15:41 > 0:15:43so you created a step effect,

0:15:43 > 0:15:45not just a nice mesh in the roots.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Positioning, positioning's pretty good.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57Look. Even from the profile.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Let's try it out. And...

0:15:59 > 0:16:01Ooh! A little short.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03I'm finding this a little bit untidy.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06It's almost your backcombing's gone a little bit matted.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09You can actually see it's slightly knotty here.

0:16:09 > 0:16:10You're quite solid on the roots

0:16:10 > 0:16:12there, which is good.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14There's a very pretty little loop going on

0:16:14 > 0:16:16and it is sort of slightly ruining it.

0:16:16 > 0:16:17It's losing that finish.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24It's a little short.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26I'm stunned by that.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28- It's a shame.- No-brainer, that one.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Because it only takes a degree of pulling the tail comb

0:16:30 > 0:16:33underneath and you could have lifted it up.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36I would say you've actually got too much backcombing at the back here.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38- Can I just show you something?- Yeah.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41See this shape here, this should be much flatter.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43So we get a nice flow coming up.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45But it's secure, it's very secure.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47She can go out in a gale, that's for sure.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55Now, is it reaching the height?

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Not at all. Your highest point is on the top of the head.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59It feels it's falling back.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01It's mainly due to this front section that you pulled over.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04- You were let down by your backcombing.- Yeah.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06It's just knots, lots and lots of knots.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08You didn't get that lovely, thick, nice base.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11If I lift it up, it falls back down again. It should stay up.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14But, overall, it's disappointing, really.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22Just to check exactly where it should be.

0:17:22 > 0:17:23Look, how precise is that?

0:17:23 > 0:17:25- That's perfect.- Really incredible.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27So it's right on the crown, this one?

0:17:27 > 0:17:28This is what we're aiming for?

0:17:28 > 0:17:30- Exactly.- Yeah, it's near to perfect.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33I can feel that this backcombing is solid inside.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35It's got a nice finish in here.

0:17:35 > 0:17:36- You can feel it on the root.- Yeah.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Wahey, it's not going anywhere.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40All it's doing is taking you up higher.

0:17:40 > 0:17:41That's good backcombing.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43I can't see anything through it now.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- It's looking good. - A hell of a job.- Thank you.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Fabulous, nice work, Kobi.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53OK, albeit with varying degrees of success,

0:17:53 > 0:17:55you've completed the beehive challenge.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Go put your feet up, take a five. Well done.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Obviously, my practice has shown off. I'm now top.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06My beehive was just off perfect

0:18:06 > 0:18:10and I was the only one that did meet the 12cm.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14I didn't realise that I'd be judged against my backcombing technique.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17I thought it'd be purely the hair once completed.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20They said it was a beehive,

0:18:20 > 0:18:22but I just added a Laura stamp to it.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Now it's on to Round Two and the blockheads.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30This challenge is all about the amateurs tackling a basic haircut.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32This week, the judges would like you

0:18:32 > 0:18:35to perfectly replicate this hairstyle.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39Which, if a painful childhood memory serves me correctly,

0:18:39 > 0:18:41is called a bowl cut.

0:18:41 > 0:18:42Thanks, Mother.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Denise, tell us more.

0:18:44 > 0:18:45Precision is the word.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48It's a full circumference going round, as you can see.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Your angle is quite a sharp angle, coming down.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54And very important is it falls under the ears.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56And there's a symmetry in it, there's no layers.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58It is completely one length.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Within the blow-dry,

0:19:00 > 0:19:02we'd like to see a wrap blow-dry.

0:19:02 > 0:19:07As ever, you will be ranked on your efforts at the end of this round.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09You have one hour and ten minutes

0:19:09 > 0:19:12to achieve this blockhead challenge look.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14Grab a blockhead, off you go. Best of luck, guys.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18Good luck, people.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21'The bowl cut is one of the basic styles in a professional

0:19:21 > 0:19:24'hairdresser's repertoire.'

0:19:24 > 0:19:28I'm just waiting for, like, in 20 minutes,

0:19:28 > 0:19:30"Oh, yeah, I know what to do."

0:19:30 > 0:19:32It's all about symmetry.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34You have to make sure it's perfect both sides

0:19:34 > 0:19:36and everything kind of blends.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39So, that is the worrying part about it.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46All right. I have to ask,

0:19:46 > 0:19:47why did you choose

0:19:47 > 0:19:49this ridiculous haircut?

0:19:49 > 0:19:53Because it's an iconic haircut. It's the bowl.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55It's a vital haircut to learn at the beginning,

0:19:55 > 0:19:59- cos it's the haircut that will create a great haircutter.- OK.

0:19:59 > 0:20:00Not easy.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Once you achieve it well,

0:20:02 > 0:20:05you can create a lot of different haircuts from that.

0:20:05 > 0:20:06It is a classic look.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09So, it's technically difficult to achieve,

0:20:09 > 0:20:11yet you must admit, wearing this,

0:20:11 > 0:20:13you would look like a slow-witted boob.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17But if you saw it on the right person, you'd love it.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24'In order to cut hair, it must first be divided into sections

0:20:24 > 0:20:28'and every haircut has a sectioning map of its own.'

0:20:28 > 0:20:29Tell me the truth.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32Have you attempted this haircut before?

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Never, ever, ever, ever, ever.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37The only cuts I've done as well have been on this competition.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41- Right. So you're relying a lot on the crib sheet?- Yeah.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- And is it helping? - It's a starting point. For me.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47As long as I can get my sections right,

0:20:47 > 0:20:50at least I'm doing one thing right with this haircut.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54For beginners attempting the bowl cut,

0:20:54 > 0:20:58the hair should first be divided into four main sections.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01The back, the front and the sides.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05It's quite nerve-racking, you standing there.

0:21:05 > 0:21:09After sectioning, the stylist must make their first cut.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13Beginners should cut the back first, then the front

0:21:13 > 0:21:14and then connect up the two

0:21:14 > 0:21:16by cutting the sides.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20I think I'm going to start from the side.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24Shall I get... Sides or fringe?

0:21:30 > 0:21:32DENISE: Dominika's unusually nervous.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34She's chosen to start from the sides, which is

0:21:34 > 0:21:37quite a risky place to start, because the angle's quite steep.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40Start from the back angle, it's a straighter line,

0:21:40 > 0:21:42it's an easier line to follow through,

0:21:42 > 0:21:44but she's got a creative licence,

0:21:44 > 0:21:47so let's see what she does with it.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49So I'm actually going to do the fringe,

0:21:49 > 0:21:50then start on the back,

0:21:50 > 0:21:52so then I can see the angle that's coming at the sides.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54That's the idea.

0:21:56 > 0:22:01Annie, however, has decided to make her first cut at the back.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03I've just seen Annie.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06The first section's cut is way too long.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09She seems to put a lot of pressure on herself.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13I just can't do it. Once again.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17Regardless of where the stylists choose to make their first cut,

0:22:17 > 0:22:20body position is crucial to ensure the finished haircut

0:22:20 > 0:22:22is totally symmetrical.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Make sure that the head's in the right position,

0:22:24 > 0:22:26your shoulders in parallel to it.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29As soon as you start positioning yourself differently,

0:22:29 > 0:22:32you're taking the risk. This is precision haircut.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37When I cut on the left side, it's always messing up,

0:22:37 > 0:22:41because apparently it has to do something with my body weight.

0:22:41 > 0:22:45I don't know, I think my left hip is heavier than the right.

0:22:46 > 0:22:50The trick to creating a perfect bowl is to cut the hair through

0:22:50 > 0:22:53the comb, rather than through the fingers.

0:22:53 > 0:22:58In hairdressing terms, this is called a low tension haircut.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01What's very important is that you're using

0:23:01 > 0:23:03the tension of the comb, when you smooth it out,

0:23:03 > 0:23:05when you comb through it and you cut underneath.

0:23:05 > 0:23:06So, if you use your fingers to

0:23:06 > 0:23:09pull it down, you create too much tension,

0:23:09 > 0:23:13which eventually will retract and create a much shorter shape.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25Guys, 30 minutes left.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29I want to try and get this cut with 15 minutes to blow-dry,

0:23:29 > 0:23:32so I've literally got 15 minutes to get it cut.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34I've realised I did it totally wrong,

0:23:34 > 0:23:37so I've just started to do the back again.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39I think it's not straight, it's at an angle.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42So I'm just going to soldier on.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Once the stylists are happy with the symmetry of their cut,

0:23:47 > 0:23:50they must blow-dry the hair.

0:23:50 > 0:23:5320 minutes left, they should start blow-drying right now.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56Because it's going to take them another ten, 15 minutes,

0:23:56 > 0:23:59leaving them five minutes to check the haircut.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01Not enough for some of them,

0:24:01 > 0:24:04because they'll know they'll need to cut a lot more.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07The judges have asked for a wrap blow-dry,

0:24:07 > 0:24:11which involves brushing the hair in all directions

0:24:11 > 0:24:14flat against the scalp, so that no partings form.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19- You're a bit nervous?- I am.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21You've got a bit of pink cheek. I can see it.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24What are you nervous about? What are you panicking for?

0:24:24 > 0:24:27What I planned to do was basically cut a longer version

0:24:27 > 0:24:29and then going again and then cut it shorter.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32Because of last week, I did cut too much off too quickly.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35But now I've sort of run out of time.

0:24:35 > 0:24:36And you've got a load of hair.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38So I've got a load of hair.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40Can I help in any way?

0:24:40 > 0:24:42- No.- OK. I'm glad you said that.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48You OK?

0:24:50 > 0:24:52I feel like, for the very first time,

0:24:52 > 0:24:54we're seeing a ruffled Dominika.

0:24:54 > 0:24:59- Are you OK?- Oh...yeah.

0:24:59 > 0:25:00What are you not happy about?

0:25:00 > 0:25:03This side is, like, wonky up,

0:25:03 > 0:25:05and this one is more longer.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09Yes, symmetry is pretty important with this round.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10I guess I will know next time.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12- If there is a next time.- Thanks.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14HE LAUGHS

0:25:14 > 0:25:15SHE LAUGHS

0:25:24 > 0:25:25One side's definitely longer.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28Perhaps one side's curling under more than the other.

0:25:28 > 0:25:29Obviously, I know what it should look like,

0:25:29 > 0:25:32and I know it doesn't look like what it should look like, so.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Five minutes. Five minutes remain.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- How are you doing?- Really bad.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41- I just can't do it!- Wait a minute.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44That sounded an awful lot like, "I've given up."

0:25:44 > 0:25:46Just look at it.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48It looks such a mess.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50You know, where's that fighting spirit?

0:25:50 > 0:25:53It went as soon as the cutting test started.

0:25:53 > 0:25:54I'm just hacking at it now.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05I'm not over the moon.

0:26:05 > 0:26:10I do wish that I took less time cutting it before.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12- That's it, guys.- But...

0:26:12 > 0:26:15No more primping or trimming.

0:26:15 > 0:26:16Time's up.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Step away from the hair, please.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Step away from the hair, Kobi.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24'The judges will be assessing the symmetry

0:26:24 > 0:26:26'and shape of the haircut

0:26:26 > 0:26:29'and the quality of the wrap blow-dry.'

0:26:29 > 0:26:31Let the judgements commence.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Let's see what Kobi's been up to.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45- I'm shaking the hair.- Why?

0:26:45 > 0:26:47So I see how the hair falls.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50- We're looking for movement there, yes?- Yeah, the movement...

0:26:50 > 0:26:53- Looks good.- ..tells you how the haircut comes out.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55The outline's fairly good.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57It's a little heavy on the back.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00It creates some layering elements, as you can see.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04So that's why it kind of flicks out on one side, but not the other side.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06- How does that come about? - Because he changed direction.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08You brought it too much forward.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11When you release it

0:27:11 > 0:27:13to the natural position,

0:27:13 > 0:27:14it comes back.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17God, that is so exact.

0:27:17 > 0:27:18Let's check the symmetry.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20Let's check the evenness.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23So, this is nice and even here. Very good.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25It's definitely damp within there.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28The blow-dry, you obviously ran out of time.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30- Overall, it's a little bit long. - Yeah.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32There's always that line of,

0:27:32 > 0:27:34"Don't take too much, take too little."

0:27:34 > 0:27:35But really, we need exact.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Thank you, Kobi. Well done, man.

0:27:37 > 0:27:38KOBI SIGHS

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Dominika!

0:27:49 > 0:27:53You've given too much tension into all your sections.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55- Given too much?- Tension.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57So when Dominika held the section of hair

0:27:57 > 0:27:59that she was going to cut,

0:27:59 > 0:28:01she pulled it a little bit too much.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04You've gone much shorter, but the angle is very good.

0:28:04 > 0:28:05The angle is very nice.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08It's a bowl shape, the symmetry's good,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10but it's slightly wedgy at the back.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12So, more of a wedge trying to get out of a bowl.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15More of a wedge trying to get out of a bowl.

0:28:15 > 0:28:16But very pretty.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Within the shape, you can see that the front is not even,

0:28:29 > 0:28:32one side to the other, OK?

0:28:32 > 0:28:35Because the hair is shorter on the top, it started flicking out.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37That's what happens when you cut it too short.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39The symmetry's gone at the back.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41There's a lot of heaviness and weight lying.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43It could have been a great bob.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45But it's not quite a bowl.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54Just got to be a little more precise.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57And then this side seems a little heavier, somehow.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59Denise, what about the symmetry?

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Let's have a little feel in here.

0:29:01 > 0:29:03Overall, I think the symmetry of this is looking good.

0:29:03 > 0:29:04I agree with Alain here.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07You're a little bit blocky at the side.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09You've got a bit of a step coming in here.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11Your blow-dry is pretty effective

0:29:11 > 0:29:12and worked really well.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15- There's definitely a bowl in there. - Thank you.

0:29:21 > 0:29:22Oh, honey.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26- Could have been a lot cleaner.- Yes.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28The roundness has been lost through

0:29:28 > 0:29:30the squareness of the fringe.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33Your starting line was too long.

0:29:33 > 0:29:34The symmetry is out,

0:29:34 > 0:29:38so you've lost that nice, round shape.

0:29:38 > 0:29:40You've lost the bowl, basically.

0:29:40 > 0:29:41You've really gone into

0:29:41 > 0:29:43a long pageboy shape.

0:29:53 > 0:29:54Katie, ooh, I say,

0:29:54 > 0:29:57we're getting closer than ever.

0:29:57 > 0:29:59You can start to see right from the top,

0:29:59 > 0:30:02the hair's lying perfectly into shape.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Lines following all the way round.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07Katie, you chose to start at the front.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09Which was, I thought, brave.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11I thought, if I get the front right, then the back,

0:30:11 > 0:30:13I can angle the sides.

0:30:13 > 0:30:14It's very symmetrical.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16I think I could put Alain's hat on top of this,

0:30:16 > 0:30:18and it would be right round.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21- It makes you want to have a haircut like this.- It does, actually.

0:30:21 > 0:30:22Well done, thank you.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24- Thank you! - Thank you very, very much.

0:30:26 > 0:30:27The judges have had their say,

0:30:27 > 0:30:30now they're going to rank your bowl cut.

0:30:30 > 0:30:31So go through to the prep room.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34We'll be through with the results in a short while. Off you go!

0:30:34 > 0:30:36Well done!

0:30:40 > 0:30:43'The judges will now rank the contestants in reverse order.'

0:30:45 > 0:30:47Look at the line.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50Is it really what we wanted? Not sure.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53I'm not so confident about the ranking.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56I was bottom last week, I probably might be bottom this week,

0:30:56 > 0:30:58cos I haven't given them what they wanted.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01You can see it's got the flaw...

0:31:01 > 0:31:04- KOBI:- Where I'm ranked today will affect my hair type for tomorrow.

0:31:04 > 0:31:08At the moment, I do think I'm more

0:31:08 > 0:31:13of middle, maybe lower.

0:31:13 > 0:31:15- Ooh la la. - It's long at the back.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18- ANNIE:- I was in such a massive stress at one point, looking at it

0:31:18 > 0:31:20and thinking, "What a mess!" One side was longer than the other.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23I always expect the worst in the ranking.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25- Ready to rank?- Yeah. - Let's go do it.

0:31:30 > 0:31:34The judges have made their decisions.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36The rankings are as follows.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40In sixth place is...

0:31:44 > 0:31:46Annie.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49- You OK?- No, cool.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51'In fifth place is Laura,

0:31:51 > 0:31:52'Kobi is fourth

0:31:52 > 0:31:54'and Marvin third.'

0:31:56 > 0:31:59So, runner-up, I can reveal it is...

0:31:59 > 0:32:00Dominika.

0:32:01 > 0:32:06Which means Katie has come first.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08Congratulations! Well deserved.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13Weirdly, you were sitting in order. That was...

0:32:13 > 0:32:14LAUGHTER

0:32:14 > 0:32:17- Look at that. That's weird. - That's weird.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20- Well, congratulations, Katie. - Thank you.- Well deserved.

0:32:20 > 0:32:22And thank you for all your hard work today, judges.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26You've been fantastic. Off you go. Thank you, see you tomorrow.

0:32:26 > 0:32:31Now, as you know, usually your ranking has a direct impact

0:32:31 > 0:32:35on the model you choose for tomorrow's freestyle challenge.

0:32:35 > 0:32:39I said "usually", because today there's a little bit of a twist.

0:32:40 > 0:32:44Your ranking has no impact on the model you choose,

0:32:44 > 0:32:47because you won't choose, we will.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50We decided that, seeing as we are halfway through the competition,

0:32:50 > 0:32:52it's time to up the stakes.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55Join me at the board, I'll explain more.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58Inside each envelope is a lock of hair belonging to

0:32:58 > 0:33:01the models for the freestyle challenge.

0:33:01 > 0:33:04OK, before we get into this,

0:33:04 > 0:33:08I can tell you, the theme of tomorrow's Freestyle challenge is...

0:33:10 > 0:33:11..period drama.

0:33:13 > 0:33:14That's quite exciting, yes?

0:33:14 > 0:33:17Katie, you came first in the blockhead challenge,

0:33:17 > 0:33:21which means you get to open your envelope first, you lucky girl!

0:33:21 > 0:33:23'What the stylists won't know

0:33:23 > 0:33:27'until tomorrow is that the models are their best friends.'

0:33:27 > 0:33:31- Pearl Ash, does that mean the hair of an old person?- No!

0:33:31 > 0:33:36- I think he's coloured that colour. - OK.- I'd say a younger person.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40It was a bit of a downer. I thought we could choose what we want.

0:33:40 > 0:33:42And then they do this to me.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44Don't be shy, show us all.

0:33:44 > 0:33:47It shouldn't be too bad, I just need to think it through.

0:33:47 > 0:33:51Hello! Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

0:33:51 > 0:33:56- I'll make it work.- What do we want? - Blonde.- You want blonde?

0:33:56 > 0:33:59- What have we got? - Yeah, that's not blonde.

0:33:59 > 0:34:03I was so much prefer to pick my model so I knew what I was

0:34:03 > 0:34:06letting myself in for, rather than being given them, which we have.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08OK.

0:34:08 > 0:34:10It's definitely helpful to be able to feel the hair,

0:34:10 > 0:34:14but we've got the disadvantage of not seeing the whole head.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18Always a pleasure. Have a good night and I'll see you later.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Today I've not been feeling too confident in what I've been doing,

0:34:21 > 0:34:23so I'm hoping I can switch that around tomorrow

0:34:23 > 0:34:25and just get stuck in there.

0:34:34 > 0:34:37Day two of the competition and it's the freestyle round, which is

0:34:37 > 0:34:40where the judges want to see the stylist really going to town

0:34:40 > 0:34:42on their creations.

0:34:42 > 0:34:45Last night, they got touchy-feely with the hair they'll be

0:34:45 > 0:34:49working on today, but what they are about to find out is that

0:34:49 > 0:34:52the hair actually belongs to their best friends.

0:34:52 > 0:34:53This is going to be awesome.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57Let's talk about yesterday briefly.

0:34:57 > 0:35:01I was very impressed with Kobi's work. The beehive was excellent.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03He was the only one reaching the perfect criteria

0:35:03 > 0:35:04of what we were asking for.

0:35:04 > 0:35:09Annie for me is definitely in danger and Laura is just slightly behind.

0:35:09 > 0:35:13- I like the fact that it isn't over until it's over.- Absolutely.

0:35:13 > 0:35:17I mean, today's challenge is definitely in Laura's world.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20So that puts Annie in an even weaker position.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25- Good morning!- ALL: Good morning. - Today is the big one.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28It's the freestyle challenge. It's period drama.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32It could be any period in the history of the world - Jurassic,

0:35:32 > 0:35:37Elizabethan, the '80s - you're only limited by your imaginations.

0:35:37 > 0:35:41The only thing we insist on is that the finished hairstyle has to

0:35:41 > 0:35:44clearly define the era you've chosen.

0:35:44 > 0:35:45Understand?

0:35:45 > 0:35:47Off you go.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51Exciting times! Exciting times.

0:35:56 > 0:35:57Bring on the hair!

0:35:59 > 0:36:01EXCITED SQUEALING

0:36:06 > 0:36:07Oh, my God!

0:36:12 > 0:36:14Oh, my God.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20So, do you lot know each other?

0:36:20 > 0:36:23- LAUGHTER - It's freaky!

0:36:23 > 0:36:24You have two and a half hours

0:36:24 > 0:36:25to work your magic on your best friends.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28Your time starts now. Good luck, guys.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30EXCITED CHATTER

0:36:30 > 0:36:33'As well as using as much fake hair as they like,

0:36:33 > 0:36:36'the stylists can use anything available in the prep room.'

0:36:36 > 0:36:39This is like dress-up but with extra fun stuff.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42This is like Christmas came early!

0:36:44 > 0:36:47- I'm so much more comfortable now. I'm not even scared.- Oh, bless you.

0:36:52 > 0:36:53This one isn't human, is it?

0:36:53 > 0:36:56No, but if you need to take it off and unplait it,

0:36:56 > 0:36:58you do what you need to do.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01'Marvin's friend Bianca arrived wearing a wig

0:37:01 > 0:37:03'made from synthetic hair.

0:37:03 > 0:37:07'Fake hair like this is difficult to style using heat,

0:37:07 > 0:37:09'so he's going to give her human hair extensions instead.'

0:37:12 > 0:37:17I can't stop shaking. Oh, my God. I'm nervous!

0:37:17 > 0:37:19'The stakes are high,

0:37:19 > 0:37:24'because at the end of this round someone will be going home.'

0:37:25 > 0:37:28What are you expecting from these guys today?

0:37:28 > 0:37:31- Proper, traditional techniques. - That's exciting.- Very exciting.

0:37:31 > 0:37:32How traditional could they go?

0:37:32 > 0:37:36The exact technique from the era that they can research online.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39So you're saying hopefully they've done the research

0:37:39 > 0:37:40and know what they're doing.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43It's part of hairdressing - you working through

0:37:43 > 0:37:47a backlog of hairstyles, and you have to know the techniques.

0:37:47 > 0:37:51I'm going to do a 1940s poodle. Betty Grable style.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53So all the hair will be at the front here

0:37:53 > 0:37:55and I'm going to do a flat roll at the back.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00'40s Hollywood starlets like Betty Grable

0:38:00 > 0:38:02'made the poodle hairstyle famous.

0:38:04 > 0:38:08'Laura curls Holly's hair with hot tongs, pins into shape

0:38:08 > 0:38:11'and leaves to cool, allowing the curl to set.'

0:38:11 > 0:38:13Laura is sticking to what she knows.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16She is using the same techniques, the same sort of pin curls,

0:38:16 > 0:38:20and she'll probably put some sort of half-doughnut into that roll,

0:38:20 > 0:38:23and really, I'd rather have seen something new from her -

0:38:23 > 0:38:26another era, something more exciting.

0:38:26 > 0:38:30I'm going to do the Roman hairstyle.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32Roman... It's like a sculpture.

0:38:32 > 0:38:39You must have seen it. A roll made of pasta-like curls.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43'Dominika is trying to recreate a hairstyle that was popular

0:38:43 > 0:38:46'almost 2,000 years ago.

0:38:46 > 0:38:47'To create her Roman do,

0:38:47 > 0:38:52'she pin-curls Hannah's hair with a heated wand and pins into place.'

0:38:52 > 0:38:54Right, see you in a sec.

0:38:59 > 0:39:03'Dominika is planning on making a base for her Roman design

0:39:03 > 0:39:06'stuffing fake hair inside a gold net.'

0:39:07 > 0:39:08I hope it's going to work,

0:39:08 > 0:39:12because I need to thread through it, to pull the hair to the front,

0:39:12 > 0:39:15to incorporate the hair into the hairstyle.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17I've got to get the curls in as quick as I can.

0:39:17 > 0:39:22'Katie also uses the pin-curling technique on friend Corinne's hair.'

0:39:22 > 0:39:26So, tell us the era you're working on.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29- Late 18th century.- Wow!

0:39:29 > 0:39:32- Marie Antoinette. - Fantastic. My favourite.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35- Of course!- How big are you planning to do it?- I'm making a sailboat.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38- Fantastic.- Hopefully not fake hair.

0:39:38 > 0:39:40I'll use Corinne's hair in front of it to work around it.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43I was hoping to make the waves out of the hair

0:39:43 > 0:39:46but she's not got much length there, so I'm working with the length.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48And then probably a few extensions at the back, ringlets.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50I can't wait to see it.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01- How are you?- All right. I must do some boat-building.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04Personally, I love Katie's choices of hairdo.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08The 18th century is all about extravaganza, about big, bulky hair.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12I've done it myself. I didn't do the boat. I'd like to see it.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14That's really cool.

0:40:16 > 0:40:20'Katie is taking inspiration from Queen Marie Antoinette,

0:40:20 > 0:40:22'who wore a replica warship in her hair

0:40:22 > 0:40:24'to celebrate a French naval victory.'

0:40:26 > 0:40:28I've got to get this looking right.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31'She's making the whole of her ship out of florist's foam

0:40:31 > 0:40:34'and wrapping it in synthetic hair extensions.'

0:40:34 > 0:40:37If I get the boat looking right, I can just whack it on her head,

0:40:37 > 0:40:38it'll be fine.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42'She is also using fake hair to make up her sails.'

0:40:48 > 0:40:51- I hope the rollers work. - I do. I'm so scared, though.

0:40:51 > 0:40:56'Kobi plans to use heated rollers to curl his friend Ella's hair.'

0:40:56 > 0:41:00- Bonjour, Kobi.- Bonjour. - So, tell us about today.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04What I'm going for is a 1950s glamour, Marilyn Monroe.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06I'm going to pull it all to one side

0:41:06 > 0:41:09- and keep that wave going all the way down.- You're using heated rollers?

0:41:09 > 0:41:14Yes. Because I think it gives a better finish than using a tong.

0:41:14 > 0:41:18I do want the wave to be quite tight to fit that '50s look.

0:41:18 > 0:41:22'The most famous person to wear long waves like this was

0:41:22 > 0:41:23'film star Veronica Lake.'

0:41:24 > 0:41:28For me, Kobi should be using the tonging technique

0:41:28 > 0:41:31and setting each section onto a clip.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35For a 1950s wave, we are looking for an even curl.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38Usually, when you brush on heated rollers the wave is really flat

0:41:38 > 0:41:42and lacking in the roots, but really curly on the ends.

0:41:42 > 0:41:44So it's not an even curl all the way through.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49If I like this, you'll have to do my hair before college every day.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54- Bonjour, Marvin.- Hello. - What are you going to come up with?

0:41:54 > 0:42:00I'm going to do a 1920s look, based on, like, a speakeasy kind of

0:42:00 > 0:42:05- Bugsy Malone look, with deep side parting, finger waves...- Wow.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08- Curls and...just...- Sounds great.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12'Finger waves were developed in the 1920s to soften the harsh

0:42:12 > 0:42:14'appearance of the bob.'

0:42:14 > 0:42:18If he's done finger-wave technique before it's going to be brilliant.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21If he hasn't done it before it's going to be a little risky.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Right, that's the base done.

0:42:26 > 0:42:30'Annie is using texturising irons to achieve her look.'

0:42:31 > 0:42:36- I'm seeing lots of colour here, so what era?- '80s.- Punk '80s.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41'Annie is planning an iconic punk Mohican.'

0:42:41 > 0:42:44I crimped it for a bit of texture, just to get a bit of oomph to it

0:42:44 > 0:42:46while I'm plaiting it.

0:42:46 > 0:42:50- And crimpers are '80s, so... - Absolutely.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53Annie has plaited the front to secure this mohawk.

0:42:53 > 0:42:58Overall, I think she seems quite in control. The techniques look solid.

0:42:58 > 0:43:01I just hope I can see that crimped hair.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05- Hannah?- Hello.- Who is Dominika?

0:43:05 > 0:43:09Let's consider her outfit today, which is fabulous.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12We are all talking about it. We love it. Is that a typical outfit?

0:43:12 > 0:43:15If you bumped into Dominika at the supermarket, would she

0:43:15 > 0:43:19- be in the frozen food section dressed like this?- Yes.

0:43:19 > 0:43:21Well, I'm used to her turning up with pom-poms, various things,

0:43:21 > 0:43:23hanging from her.

0:43:24 > 0:43:26Jewels stitched to her bum.

0:43:26 > 0:43:31One day she turned up to work and I think you just had, like,

0:43:31 > 0:43:34a plain pair of jeans, a white top and just straight,

0:43:34 > 0:43:35normal hair, and I thought, "Are you OK?"

0:43:35 > 0:43:38You know when somebody is not normal when they dress normal

0:43:38 > 0:43:40and that's not normal.

0:43:40 > 0:43:41- That's not normal.- Yeah.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44- Has she got the skills to go all the way in this competition?- Definitely.

0:43:44 > 0:43:46No doubt about it.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48- OK, I'll leave you alone.- Thanks.

0:43:49 > 0:43:53'Marvin has now started finger-waving Bianca's hair.'

0:43:54 > 0:43:56Quite flapperish.

0:43:56 > 0:43:57THEY LAUGH

0:43:59 > 0:44:06It's all about using...your fingers and your comb simultaneously.

0:44:06 > 0:44:08So, if your comb goes one way

0:44:08 > 0:44:12and your finger is holding the other way, it can be a little bit...

0:44:19 > 0:44:24'Marvin heats the hair under a hood dryer to set his waves.'

0:44:26 > 0:44:30Basically, just sewing two tracks together just to make them

0:44:30 > 0:44:33a little bit thicker.

0:44:33 > 0:44:37'Kobi will enhance his '50s waves with hair extensions, which he

0:44:37 > 0:44:40'is sewing onto hairclips.'

0:44:40 > 0:44:43I've not actually done the look with extensions before.

0:44:43 > 0:44:46One hour left! One hour left.

0:44:46 > 0:44:48Ohhh!

0:44:50 > 0:44:51It's quite hard to do.

0:44:51 > 0:44:55'Having finished making her ship, Katie is focusing on the waves,

0:44:55 > 0:44:59'which will be made out of real and fake hair.'

0:45:02 > 0:45:05I've come to pick your brains.

0:45:05 > 0:45:06About Laura. '40s, '50s look.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09- Laura wakes up like this. - I don't doubt it!

0:45:09 > 0:45:12She goes to bed like that and she wakes up like that.

0:45:12 > 0:45:16- She was born in the wrong era, weren't you, Laura?- Totally.

0:45:16 > 0:45:20- I take it we are going for '40s, '50s era.- Surprise!- Surprise!

0:45:29 > 0:45:32- Hi.- Hi.- You must be Helen.- Hello.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Is this something you two have done before?

0:45:34 > 0:45:36We used to do a lot of dancing in competitions,

0:45:36 > 0:45:38so we'd always be doing each other's...

0:45:38 > 0:45:40Well, me and the neighbour doing our hair.

0:45:40 > 0:45:43Tell me about the glory days, the dancing days.

0:45:43 > 0:45:47- What dances were you doing? - Everything. Disco, rock'n'roll.

0:45:47 > 0:45:52I was taller, so I'd end up trying to throw Annie in the air.

0:45:52 > 0:45:54And crazy outfits as well.

0:45:54 > 0:45:57- This hair would go really well with a few of those.- It definitely would.

0:45:57 > 0:46:00- Well, I can't wait to see the results.- Thank you.

0:46:00 > 0:46:02It's just getting this to, like...

0:46:02 > 0:46:08- Do I do more hair and get it mixed in?- Yeah, I think that could work.

0:46:08 > 0:46:10It's called rhubarb and custard.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12That's what they used to call it in the '80s.

0:46:18 > 0:46:20I wanted them quite tight.

0:46:22 > 0:46:24To create that nice wave that I wanted.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30Marvin, you have 15 minutes left!

0:46:31 > 0:46:3215 minutes left.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35- How are you, Bianca? - I'm good, thank you.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38Tell me more about Marvin the man.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40He seems very chilled out, very relaxed.

0:46:40 > 0:46:45- He is. Very funny, so... - Good listener?- Very good.

0:46:45 > 0:46:47I think one thing we always say is he needs to take

0:46:47 > 0:46:51- more time out for himself.- Oh, he just gives too much.- He does.

0:46:51 > 0:46:52The question is,

0:46:52 > 0:46:55has he got what it takes to be a winner in this competition?

0:46:55 > 0:46:58- I think so. I think you definitely want to watch out for him.- OK.

0:47:04 > 0:47:06'Using a French plait as a base,

0:47:06 > 0:47:09'Katie attaches her ship to Corinne's head.'

0:47:09 > 0:47:12I apologise now if I hurt your head. Wobble your head a bit.

0:47:12 > 0:47:14Does that feel OK?

0:47:14 > 0:47:16Yeah.

0:47:19 > 0:47:24I'm enjoying myself. I'm definitely in my comfort zone.

0:47:25 > 0:47:28Just put a little bit of gold paint on top of it.

0:47:28 > 0:47:31Ancient Rome was like gold, jewels and...

0:47:31 > 0:47:33You're going to be Goldilocks!

0:47:33 > 0:47:37- Yay!- Ten minutes, guys. Ten minutes left.

0:47:37 > 0:47:40We've definitely got the '50s glamour in there.

0:47:44 > 0:47:47I love the boat. I mean, how crazy is that?

0:47:49 > 0:47:50I'm as happy as I can be, yeah.

0:47:52 > 0:47:55- Are you pleased?- I like it, but doesn't mean anything.

0:47:58 > 0:48:00I'm about to put on the lace.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05Time's up! Step away from your best friend, please.

0:48:07 > 0:48:10'Denise and Alain will be looking to see that the designs fit

0:48:10 > 0:48:16'the historical brief and that they stand up to 360-degree scrutiny.'

0:48:16 > 0:48:19The judges are coming. What's Katie been up to?

0:48:23 > 0:48:25Can we set sail? I think so.

0:48:36 > 0:48:38Amazing. All the way around.

0:48:38 > 0:48:41You can see all the waves coming from the front to the ship.

0:48:41 > 0:48:44The curls on the back you imagine to crash

0:48:44 > 0:48:48- and then the ship shape comes out. - It says Marie Antoinette to me.

0:48:49 > 0:48:51The sails are mesmerising.

0:48:51 > 0:48:54I no way would have ever thought of doing that. Never.

0:48:54 > 0:48:57I would have looked for a fabric that would have created

0:48:57 > 0:48:59that sailing effect, but you've done it with hair.

0:48:59 > 0:49:01It's just...

0:49:01 > 0:49:06- It's superb.- It's like the entire ship is made of waves.- It is.

0:49:06 > 0:49:09And you've used the model's own hair into it, you know, beautifully.

0:49:09 > 0:49:11You made it really high, really extravagant,

0:49:11 > 0:49:13just like it was in the era.

0:49:13 > 0:49:16- Nice work, Katie. Well done.- Thank you.

0:49:16 > 0:49:17That went well.

0:49:30 > 0:49:33I definitely get 1980s. Obviously the punk side of the '80s.

0:49:33 > 0:49:35But it is punk with a fashion sense.

0:49:35 > 0:49:40- It's not traditional punk, it's a catwalk punk.- Exactly what I wanted.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43- OK, then you got it. - The spike works really well.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46I love the way it points into the front.

0:49:47 > 0:49:49Proportion works.

0:49:49 > 0:49:52It's kind of different on one side than the other.

0:49:52 > 0:49:55That's punk, though, that's anarchy for you.

0:49:55 > 0:49:58- And you're talking hairdressing here.- Oooh, sorry!

0:49:58 > 0:50:01- It definitely is rhubarb and custard.- Yeah.

0:50:13 > 0:50:17- Marvin, I definitely feel I'm in the 1920s.- Thank you.

0:50:17 > 0:50:20- You've used her real hair to blend into the extensions.- Yeah.

0:50:20 > 0:50:24Your waves are lovely.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27I would have loved to see them all the way round at the top.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29It's classic to the era.

0:50:29 > 0:50:34The definition could be a little bit more refined from the back.

0:50:34 > 0:50:36I can hear the Charleston just looking at it.

0:50:36 > 0:50:40Well done, you, for doing finger waves on that type of hair.

0:50:40 > 0:50:42- It's superb.- Nice work.

0:50:42 > 0:50:44Laura.

0:50:53 > 0:50:55Well done. Really good.

0:50:56 > 0:50:58Would you say, Denise, that this

0:50:58 > 0:51:02- hairstyle conjures up images of the '40s?- Absolutely the '40s.

0:51:02 > 0:51:05Lovely lines here, and you did mention Hollywood,

0:51:05 > 0:51:07- the dolly style glamour.- Yes.

0:51:07 > 0:51:10I would have liked to have seen that roll a bit more snood-like.

0:51:10 > 0:51:11What does snood mean?

0:51:11 > 0:51:13A snood was kind of a net where

0:51:13 > 0:51:16a roll would come much lower in the neck.

0:51:16 > 0:51:18The finish is pretty good.

0:51:18 > 0:51:20You used a technique which you are very confident with.

0:51:20 > 0:51:22The setting technique, the pin curls.

0:51:22 > 0:51:25If it was just a little more snood-like, it would

0:51:25 > 0:51:26have been just a bit more sexy.

0:51:26 > 0:51:27OK.

0:51:27 > 0:51:30The '40s were very glamorous, sexy times.

0:51:32 > 0:51:33Dominika.

0:51:33 > 0:51:34And Hannah.

0:51:55 > 0:51:57Fab-u-lous.

0:51:57 > 0:52:01- It looks great.- I'm speechless, actually. That takes a lot!

0:52:01 > 0:52:03It really is...a Roman empress.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06The way the curls are going up.

0:52:06 > 0:52:07I can see her standing

0:52:07 > 0:52:09in Caesar's Palace, that's for sure.

0:52:09 > 0:52:12The intricate way that you put each piece one after the other

0:52:12 > 0:52:14completed the whole,

0:52:14 > 0:52:16because you only had the hair from the front -

0:52:16 > 0:52:20you had to calculate what was going where, consistency into it.

0:52:20 > 0:52:21It's not easy.

0:52:21 > 0:52:25And I love the little reflection of gold that you put through it.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28It is historic, in the sense of it and everything.

0:52:28 > 0:52:31- It could headline a major fashion show.- High praise!

0:52:31 > 0:52:35I will take our drooling judges away. Well done. Amazing.

0:52:35 > 0:52:36High five!

0:52:51 > 0:52:53I'm definitely not seeing '50s.

0:52:53 > 0:52:56I have to say the hair looks absolutely beautiful,

0:52:56 > 0:52:59but it's not strong enough to the period.

0:52:59 > 0:53:02- You've got much of a '90s-style curl.- Right.

0:53:02 > 0:53:04And you also used the heated rollers,

0:53:04 > 0:53:07- which I really feel was a bit of a mistake.- OK.

0:53:07 > 0:53:09The problem with heated rollers

0:53:09 > 0:53:12is that the roots are not taking that much.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15It's not creating any shapes into it.

0:53:15 > 0:53:17Those rollers have to be in a long, long time.

0:53:18 > 0:53:20Guys, thank you so much for all your hard work.

0:53:20 > 0:53:23You've excelled yourselves again.

0:53:23 > 0:53:25The judges will now put their heads together

0:53:25 > 0:53:27and decide on a winner of the freestyle round

0:53:27 > 0:53:31and they'll be making a tough decision about who will be

0:53:31 > 0:53:32leaving us at the end of the day.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35Go through to the prep room and we'll come

0:53:35 > 0:53:37and join you soon as we can. Thanks, guys.

0:53:40 > 0:53:43My cut wasn't the best and today wasn't the best.

0:53:44 > 0:53:46I'm basically just hanging by my beehive.

0:53:46 > 0:53:49I didn't do too well in the cutting challenge,

0:53:49 > 0:53:52so I don't really know where I stand in the competition.

0:53:52 > 0:53:55I think I have cause for concern because I'm not consistent.

0:53:55 > 0:53:59I don't want to go home, but what will be will be, won't it?

0:53:59 > 0:54:02Some tough decisions. Who shone?

0:54:02 > 0:54:05- Dominika and Katie absolutely got it in one.- Yeah.

0:54:05 > 0:54:09She created those lovely weaves going up and those sails -

0:54:09 > 0:54:11it was an absolute work of art.

0:54:11 > 0:54:15And why, Alain, did Dominika's efforts impress you so much?

0:54:15 > 0:54:18- I've never seen you like that before. You were...- Yeah, for sure.

0:54:18 > 0:54:23I mean, it's consistent. At this stage she is delivering every time.

0:54:23 > 0:54:25She shows skill, she shows flair into it.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28It was also creative to the degree

0:54:28 > 0:54:30of making it the best that we've ever seen.

0:54:30 > 0:54:35Let's talk about the person who may be leaving us.

0:54:35 > 0:54:38Kobi was very much at the top with that beehive.

0:54:38 > 0:54:41He just didn't deliver the period.

0:54:41 > 0:54:45Annie's haircutting is not very good, let's face it.

0:54:45 > 0:54:48In her cutting round it was...

0:54:48 > 0:54:51- it wasn't solid cutting, but her flair...- She's erratic, isn't she?

0:54:51 > 0:54:55Yeah. Well, she surprises you with her fabulous mohawk 1980s style.

0:54:55 > 0:54:59Could have done with a bit more hair into it.

0:54:59 > 0:55:04But when I go to Laura, I feel I'm seeing pin curls,

0:55:04 > 0:55:07rolls with every brief.

0:55:07 > 0:55:10I'm going to leave you with this hellish prospect.

0:55:10 > 0:55:12- Best of luck, guys. - Thank you.- Thank you.

0:55:12 > 0:55:17They don't seem to be as harsh on this round.

0:55:17 > 0:55:20You want to see someone that shows maybe a bit more versatility.

0:55:20 > 0:55:25Who can deliver what we are asking for at high standard we want it.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28- And take more risks with what they're doing.- I agree.

0:55:29 > 0:55:31Hey, guys.

0:55:33 > 0:55:37Well...needless to say, the freestyle round was a scorcher.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40The judges have really struggled to identify a winner,

0:55:40 > 0:55:43but they have a name.

0:55:43 > 0:55:45And the name of that person is...

0:55:50 > 0:55:52..Dominika.

0:55:52 > 0:55:54Congratulations!

0:55:54 > 0:55:55Thank you.

0:55:55 > 0:55:57Outstanding work. Congrats.

0:55:59 > 0:56:03The bad news is, that we do have to send one of you home.

0:56:03 > 0:56:07And the name of the person who is leaving us today is...

0:56:16 > 0:56:17..Laura.

0:56:21 > 0:56:22It's all right.

0:56:22 > 0:56:24Laura, can I just say amazing.

0:56:24 > 0:56:26We decided to send Laura home.

0:56:26 > 0:56:29She does vintage hair really, really well,

0:56:29 > 0:56:31but her technique is kind of limited.

0:56:31 > 0:56:32INDISTINCT

0:56:34 > 0:56:36She's been true to her vintage hairdressing,

0:56:36 > 0:56:39and I know she can take that on to the next stage.

0:56:40 > 0:56:42I feel shocked that I've got through to this point.

0:56:42 > 0:56:44If I've got this far I must be good.

0:56:45 > 0:56:48I'm so happy that I've survived another week.

0:56:49 > 0:56:51I've had such a good time in the competition.

0:56:51 > 0:56:54I did exactly what I came here to do - vintage styling,

0:56:54 > 0:56:55and that's what I've done.

0:56:55 > 0:56:57Making people look like they are from the '50s,

0:56:57 > 0:57:01that's what I do, so I'm definitely going to continue doing that.

0:57:06 > 0:57:08Next time on Hair...

0:57:08 > 0:57:11- How brave do you feel? - Is this a chignon?- I hope so.

0:57:11 > 0:57:14I would say this was going quite badly.

0:57:14 > 0:57:18- It's absolutely stunning. - The theme is sci-fi!

0:57:18 > 0:57:22- I'm doing half-ram, half-man. - Alien-like.- Expose the brain.

0:57:22 > 0:57:27- Extraterrestrial.- Action man. - Robot.- May the Force be with you!
