0:00:02 > 0:00:03Welcome to Hair. It's the quarter final,

0:00:03 > 0:00:06where there are just five contestants left in the battle

0:00:06 > 0:00:08to be crowned Britain's best amateur hairstylist.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12Last time, the stylists took on beehives...

0:00:12 > 0:00:13Definitely is a beehive.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14..bowl cuts...

0:00:14 > 0:00:16One side is definitely longer.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Perhaps one side is curling under more than the other? I don't know.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and created historical hair dos on their best friends.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25- Oh, my God!- Did you have any idea? - No idea!

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Dominika's Roman hairstyle saw her reign supreme.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31I can see her standing in Caesar's palace, that's for sure.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Whilst Laura's war-time creation left her far from victorious.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37When I go to Laura,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40I feel I'm seeing pin curls, rolls with every brief.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42And she had to leave.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45This time on Hair, it's the quarter final

0:00:45 > 0:00:48and under the watchful gaze of judges, Denise and Alain...

0:00:48 > 0:00:49So how brave do you feel?

0:00:49 > 0:00:52..the stylists will have to create perfectly coiffured chignons.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Its my birthday obviously! It's absolutely stunning.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57A one-length round layer...

0:00:57 > 0:00:59I would say this is going quite badly.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03..and go intergalactic in the freestyle challenge.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06I'm doing half-ram, half-man...

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Alien-like, I suppose, brain...

0:01:08 > 0:01:09- Extra terrestrial.- Action man.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10../robot.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Whatever happens at the end of tomorrow, one person will be leaving

0:01:14 > 0:01:16the competition. The contestants are ready,

0:01:16 > 0:01:20the judges are ready, I'm definitely ready - let's get to work on Hair.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36- Yes, yes, yes! Good morning. - Morning.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38- How are you doing?- I'm good.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Congratulations! Welcome to the quarter final.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45It's an exciting time, you've all done brilliantly to get this far,

0:01:45 > 0:01:49- you should be proud of yourselves. You really, really should. Ready for more hair?- Yeah.

0:01:49 > 0:01:50Then let us begin.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53As you know, in the first round the judges want to see you

0:01:53 > 0:01:56incorporate a set element into your hairstyles.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59This week's set element is...the chignon.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04The judges want to see intricate and immaculately polished finishes.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Denise, what are you thinking?

0:02:06 > 0:02:09The chignon is one of the most sophisticated up-dos,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11one of my most famous being Grace Kelly.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Wait a minute - you did Grace Kelly's hair?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15- I certainly did.- Check you out!

0:02:15 > 0:02:19A little while ago obviously but it was an iconic, as the chignon is,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21an iconic do. I don't want to see messy,

0:02:21 > 0:02:26deconstructed hair. It's got to be elegant and a defined shape.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Make sure that you don't use any padding.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32You can use pins and grips but make sure they're completely hidden.

0:02:32 > 0:02:38It's a very luxurious finish, and it's got to look very expensive.

0:02:38 > 0:02:39Taken all that on board?

0:02:42 > 0:02:44You always look so nervous, you guys!

0:02:44 > 0:02:46All right, you know what the judges want,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50you have one hour and 15 minutes. Get to it. Good luck!

0:02:55 > 0:02:59- So, have you done the hair modelling before?- No, my first time.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- Excited?- Yeah.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04The stylists have each chosen a model with the type of hair

0:03:04 > 0:03:07they'd like to work with for this challenge.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10I chose blonde European hair,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12mid-length,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15just for the sheer fact that the kind of definition

0:03:15 > 0:03:18in the colour helps you see what you're doing a little bit better.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22The model's got really thick, really straight, sleek hair, which is

0:03:22 > 0:03:26what I've asked for because they want a high shine and a nice

0:03:26 > 0:03:30sleek look. The hair's perfect for it because it's just so shiny.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32So, guys, what's a chignon?

0:03:32 > 0:03:35So, from the French expression, chignon du cou is where the hair

0:03:35 > 0:03:37is placed on the back of the nape.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41- OK.- OK? You can knot it, you can make a roll of it,

0:03:41 > 0:03:43you can make a bun,

0:03:43 > 0:03:47as long as it's attached neatly without seeing any grips.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50- A chignon also is all the hair up. - Hair up.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Yeah, so it's all within the back of the head of the hair.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54You don't see it from above,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57you don't see the work or the twists.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00You can get a little bit of profile on the side chignon or something.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02- It's a very sharp work of art.- OK.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05The only tool they've got is their combs and the only fabric

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- they've got is the hair on the model's head.- OK.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10True craftsmanship for this one.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11OK. Thanks, guys.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The stylists begin by preparing the hair

0:04:14 > 0:04:17so it's the texture they want for their chignon.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20I've done like a volume mousse round the roots and then drying it

0:04:20 > 0:04:22with volume at the top so I can get a bit of height to the style

0:04:22 > 0:04:26and then blow drying it straight

0:04:26 > 0:04:28so I've got that nice, sleek, shiny finish.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31I want it to be a really classic bun.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Kobi, the youngest stylist in the competition, takes hair,

0:04:37 > 0:04:40fashion and shopping very seriously.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44His model's hair will be swept into a side parting at the front, and

0:04:44 > 0:04:49at the back two strands of hair will criss-cross above a full chignon.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52So, Kobi, this looks interesting. What style have you got in mind?

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I wanted my chignon to be really clean, really polished

0:04:55 > 0:04:57so I'm just going to dry it now.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00I've got some thickening creme in to give it some hold and some texture.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03I'm going to blow dry it into how I'm going to finish styling

0:05:03 > 0:05:07this front bit because I want it to be really, really tight.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11I notice that you're using a comb to blow dry, why is that?

0:05:11 > 0:05:14I just wanted to make sure all the little hairs are completely...

0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Completely flat.- Yes, really, really sleek.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20It was interesting watching Kobi

0:05:20 > 0:05:22because he really was using a proper technique.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26He roughed the hair through and then he was using the comb to do

0:05:26 > 0:05:29what he was saying - keep that shine, it was really important.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Before I was doing this I'd have been fine with a chignon,

0:05:32 > 0:05:35but because I'm doing it here I'm thinking, is it too simple?

0:05:35 > 0:05:36Is it too detailed? I don't know.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38You kind of lose everything you know!

0:05:39 > 0:05:4330-year-old Katie is a busy mum who takes every opportunity to

0:05:43 > 0:05:45practice on her daughters.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49She's planning on creating a flower-shaped chignon

0:05:49 > 0:05:50made out of plaits.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52The front of the hair will be swept into it

0:05:52 > 0:05:54and it will be placed to the side of the neck.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Mm, Katie, Katie, how are you doing?

0:05:57 > 0:05:58I'm all right.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01You're positioning the chignon in a special place?

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Down here so you can see it slightly from the front,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07- so it's still low but it'll be like a circle-type shape.- OK.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10I'm doing quite a few plaits and making it into a flower shape

0:06:10 > 0:06:13so it'll stay nice and shiny rather than bits falling out.

0:06:13 > 0:06:14- You've got a plan then?- Yeah!

0:06:17 > 0:06:20I'm just curling the top to prepare it really, so it's like

0:06:20 > 0:06:23an old school Hollywood kind of glamour. You see it on people like

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Kim Kardashian and Kate Winslet, so I'm just hoping it looks as cool.

0:06:30 > 0:06:35To add texture to the hair, Dominika and Annie are creating pin curls,

0:06:35 > 0:06:39which involves curling the hair around a hot wand and pinning it.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44All I'm doing now is taking these out, these are cooled,

0:06:44 > 0:06:48and hopefully they're going to brush out really nice.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Critical care nurse Annie lives in Leeds with her boyfriend.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59She is planning on rolling the hair along the nape of the neck,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01creating a wave at the side.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05When I was researching the chignon,

0:07:05 > 0:07:09it originated like with your old, like, movie stars.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11One of Denise's most famous clients

0:07:11 > 0:07:14was the woman who popularised the chignon.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Grace Kelly was a Hollywood star and real-life princess,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22whose style was copied around the world in the 1950s.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28Elegant and sophisticated, the chignon remains to this day

0:07:28 > 0:07:31the hairstyle of choice for actresses on the red carpet.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35With a chignon you have to keep it sleek and clean.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Like, a couple of hairs out of place can totally mess up the whole look.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46Londoner Marvin loves to work with wigs, weaves, and hair extensions.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51He is planning on pulling the hair into a chignon, which

0:07:51 > 0:07:54will have a plait in the centre and be trimmed with a small braid.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58I kind of thought that if I kept the top

0:07:58 > 0:08:00probably about 90% dry, then it will be

0:08:00 > 0:08:03easier to keep smooth, once I put the products in it

0:08:03 > 0:08:06and it can dry it so it will just stay where it needs to stay.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11I am definitely prepared but I'm definitely winging at the same time!

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Later on when the hairstyle is almost finished

0:08:18 > 0:08:21I will backcomb a bit

0:08:21 > 0:08:24and try and get a bit of volume on the front, a nice wave.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30Polish born Dominika loves to scour markets to find

0:08:30 > 0:08:32accessories for her hairstyles.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37Throughout the competition her style has been flamboyant.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42She's creating a chignon overlaid with curls with

0:08:42 > 0:08:45a quiff at the front, and braiding at the sides.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48First of all I sprayed it with some setting spray

0:08:48 > 0:08:50and the hairspray, pull it back, pin it

0:08:50 > 0:08:55and blow dry it to get solid finish and then on the top of it I'm

0:08:55 > 0:09:00getting this French plait which still shows the slick bits.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04With just 40 minutes left,

0:09:04 > 0:09:07the stylists start to assemble their chignons.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10I'm thinking about how many plaits I need to do

0:09:10 > 0:09:13because she's got that thick hair that it might be nice to have

0:09:13 > 0:09:14two thicker plaits brought round

0:09:14 > 0:09:17but I don't know, I'm making it up.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21Katie has got a plan of doing braids that is going to shape

0:09:21 > 0:09:22the chignon itself.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24I'm not 100% sure about it,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28if its too tight or too compact it won't look as effective, really,

0:09:28 > 0:09:32and you'll se the braid, like a normal kind of effect to it.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Let's see what she comes up with.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38A classic chignon is voluminous in shape which helps to create

0:09:38 > 0:09:39an elegant profile.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42As they can't use any padding, there's two ways around it.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45First with the thickness, if you have enough hair you can just

0:09:45 > 0:09:50use the hair mass and twirl with it within the shape you want to create.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54If not possible you have a ponytail, you backcomb on the inside of it,

0:09:54 > 0:09:58clean on the outside, bring back the ends onto the elastic bands

0:09:58 > 0:10:00and then start shaping your chignon.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02It's easy enough if you

0:10:02 > 0:10:05a good base, with the right amount of product and the right amount

0:10:05 > 0:10:10of thickness or backcombing inside it, its pretty straightforward.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13I have practised this a lot at home, I have practised sleek,

0:10:13 > 0:10:16clean, up-dos but not so much on real people,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19they are more on blockheads rather than...

0:10:19 > 0:10:20real clients.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23I'm going to section off my ponytail into two sections

0:10:23 > 0:10:25and I'm going to backcomb the top part

0:10:25 > 0:10:28and that's going to be my padding.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30I'm just rolling that back bit up...

0:10:30 > 0:10:31that's how I want it to sit.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36I just think it's a really difficult one to create

0:10:36 > 0:10:40to be honest with you, I've never really worn it myself,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43It's quite like an elegant... something you'd

0:10:43 > 0:10:45have for somewhere quite posh.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48And, as you can tell, I'm not posh.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57To create his chignon, Kobi puts hairspray on

0:10:57 > 0:11:01one side of the hair and wraps it over the hair band.

0:11:01 > 0:11:06To allow the hairspray time to set, he temporarily pins it into place.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10The ends of the hair are then tucked smoothly into the chignon

0:11:10 > 0:11:12on both sides.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15- STEVE:- 15 minutes! 15 minutes!

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Chignons formed, the stylists move onto create the

0:11:18 > 0:11:21highly-polished finish Alain and Denise are expecting.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Let's get the shine.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26The mistake that people make they just think product's going to

0:11:26 > 0:11:28solve all the problems and create the shape

0:11:28 > 0:11:32but overall I don't use a lot of product, I use hairspray to finish

0:11:32 > 0:11:36so I then I've always got the shine and I've always got the flow.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38I'm using hairspray, shine spray

0:11:38 > 0:11:42and finishing spray just to get a really smooth and elegant look.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45So, my tip for the hairspray is to keep the nozzle very far away

0:11:45 > 0:11:47so you don't make the hair wet at all,

0:11:47 > 0:11:50so you can reapply again and again if you want to.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Nice chignon(!)

0:11:53 > 0:11:54CHUCKLING

0:11:54 > 0:11:55Going well?

0:11:55 > 0:11:59Yeah, it's going well, just trying to fix up on the finishing.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06I'm just trying to rescue some of these bits here.

0:12:06 > 0:12:11Wow, there are two hairstyles worthy of comment here.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15- Obviously your model's.- Uh-huh. - And this.- Oh.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17- How do you do this? Did somebody do it for you?- No.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- I did it myself. - What time do you get up?

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- That's my sweet secret! - Come on! Level with me.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- Do you sleep with it in?- No. - Do you sleep upside down like a bat?

0:12:26 > 0:12:30- I'm going to tell you my secret but you can't tell anyone.- Go on...

0:12:30 > 0:12:34- I unscrew my head. - You unscrew your head?!

0:12:34 > 0:12:36All right, yeah, stop poking fun!

0:12:47 > 0:12:49It looks good, it looks great.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52What I will state is that it looks very different from everybody else's.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56- Oh, don't say that... - I'm just saying, is this a chignon?

0:12:56 > 0:12:59- I hope so cos it's below the neck... - You hope so!

0:12:59 > 0:13:03- It's a roll, it's sleek. - It comes up?- It comes up.

0:13:03 > 0:13:04You can't see it above the front.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07What am I going to do for 12 minutes?!

0:13:07 > 0:13:09- CHUCKLING:- I'm finished.

0:13:09 > 0:13:10How are you doing, Kobi?

0:13:10 > 0:13:15- All right, thank you.- Are we there? - Nearly.- It looks fab.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19Tight, intricate, immaculate. There's not a hair out of place there.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22- No meltdowns this week? - We haven't got there yet.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24LAUGHTER

0:13:24 > 0:13:28- This is looking pretty tight as well, I mean, I'm expecting big things from this.- Hopefully so.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32I'll leave you to it with one minute to go, that's one minute to go,

0:13:32 > 0:13:3360 seconds.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Oh, just...

0:13:50 > 0:13:55I plan to do basically the same shape but have like a braided trim

0:13:55 > 0:13:57just around the edge.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- Yep, I forgot.- No, I'm not messing with it.

0:14:02 > 0:14:08Time's up guys, please stop coiffeuring your chignons.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11Step away from the model.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Let's take a look at Annie's work.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20Alain, first off, is the chignon below the crown?

0:14:20 > 0:14:23It takes quite a wide...

0:14:23 > 0:14:27place around the back, even reaching, a little bit, the sides

0:14:27 > 0:14:30so it's on the edge of being a chignon.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Yeah, you've got a lovely elegance here, you've got a great line

0:14:32 > 0:14:36coming down, just could have been a little bit tighter in at the sides.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38I feel, but there's an element of over hairspraying...

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Yeah, I know and I didn't want to do that!

0:14:40 > 0:14:41THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:14:41 > 0:14:43A little bit too much hairspray.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45A bit untidy around here, if you are going to do a roll

0:14:45 > 0:14:47it could be a little bit tidier.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57- How's this positioning, Alain? - It's not exactly in the middle

0:14:57 > 0:15:00you put it slightly on the side. Don't know if you wanted to do that?

0:15:00 > 0:15:03- A bit of flair!- I think that was a bit of an accident.- Flair!

0:15:03 > 0:15:06A bit of an accident.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Erm, the way it is going feels more like...

0:15:09 > 0:15:12out of the swimming pool and it just slides itself,

0:15:12 > 0:15:15there is no combing in a straight direction.

0:15:15 > 0:15:20It's making sure that all the lines are in the same direction

0:15:20 > 0:15:22and reaching the same element.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25- What do you think, Denise? - Yeah, it's very glossy finished

0:15:25 > 0:15:28and it doesn't feel too hairsprayed

0:15:28 > 0:15:31and I definitely can't see a pin, I see you working hard on that,

0:15:31 > 0:15:35you've done a great job on the pinning and it is very secure.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37You can see that this hairline is low and quite shaggy so

0:15:37 > 0:15:40this chignon wanted to come down lower it was sort of telling

0:15:40 > 0:15:42you to take it down lower.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45I really like the hair colour as well, I think the blonde works

0:15:45 > 0:15:47- really well.- Oh, it's beautiful. - With the shine.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50- Very wraparound type of style. - Yeah...

0:15:56 > 0:15:58- Kobi, Kobi, Kobi, Alain...?- Yeah.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02- Is this a chignon? - It has beautiful positioning right on

0:16:02 > 0:16:05the bottom of the nape.

0:16:05 > 0:16:10And the design itself is quite immaculate, working that front piece.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13Into the chignon itself twirling around and

0:16:13 > 0:16:16I love the cross-crossing of both of them underneath,

0:16:16 > 0:16:19it's very clean.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22- Good proportion.- Wow.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26It's my birthday, obviously! It's perfect. I have to say.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30It's absolutely stunning. A beautiful shine, perfect high gloss.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32It's exactly what we asked for

0:16:32 > 0:16:35and, of course, you got that by using your comb and your dryer.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39The twist is secure, there's no visible signs of pinning.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42It doesn't look oversprayed, it just looks beautifully shiny.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44It doesn't look over-producted

0:16:44 > 0:16:46It's tight, it's neat.

0:16:46 > 0:16:47Jackpot.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54So, Alain, does this Chignon pass the placement test?

0:16:54 > 0:16:58It's placed right in the nape, it's nice you put it at the side, actually.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00It's the braiding, you know around the bun...

0:17:00 > 0:17:03you can see that you've done it very well, don't get me wrong,

0:17:03 > 0:17:05you don't see the ends, you don't see the pins

0:17:05 > 0:17:07but it feels a little blocky.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09- Feels it needs to pop out a little bit.- Yeah.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13- What do you think? - It's a little bit heavy, it's almost like you've just done that.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17But overall it's lovely and shiny, it's a lovely shape, it's a nice line.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19There's a few little hairs, especially with the plait,

0:17:19 > 0:17:21you could have just held them down and sprayed them.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24You still created a really good finish.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32Love the positioning, it works really well within the neck position.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35Love the volume that you created, the proportions are beautiful.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38Even from the front it's very symmetrical.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43The intricate design of the braid works,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45I really think that it's simple enough.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47I'm not sure about the pink curl on the back.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Let's see what Denise thinks about the design of it.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54I like the intricacy but I just feel there's too much hairspray on it.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56It's gone a little bit brittle.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59Your pins are really nice and neat and it's very, very secure

0:17:59 > 0:18:01- and tight.- Still... remarkable work, you know.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03Let's leave on remarkable work...

0:18:03 > 0:18:05LAUGHTER

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- Thank you, Dominika.- Lovely.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10OK, thank you guys for all your chignon work,

0:18:10 > 0:18:12go take well-deserved break in the prep room.

0:18:12 > 0:18:13Thank you.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20They did say "perfect" at one point which I was really,

0:18:20 > 0:18:22really pleased about but... erm

0:18:22 > 0:18:27it's good to hear that I actually got out what I put in.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29I felt like I was a little bit winging it, me personally,

0:18:29 > 0:18:32I would have liked it a little more polished, a little bit more secure.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35I think I could have done better.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39Everyone's done really well so I... I've not done the best in the set element but

0:18:39 > 0:18:42the fact that I got through it and I didn't mess up is good.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50Now it's time for the challenge the stylists love to hate -

0:18:50 > 0:18:53the blockhead round, which is all about precision cutting.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56This week the judges are tasking them with cutting every single

0:18:56 > 0:19:01hair on the head to exactly the same length, it sounds easy, but is it?

0:19:04 > 0:19:07So... the blockhead round, which is where the judges

0:19:07 > 0:19:09would like you to showcase your cutting skills.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14This week they'd like you to pull off this lovely hairdo,

0:19:14 > 0:19:15a round layer.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18It's called a round layer. Not a mullet.

0:19:18 > 0:19:23Think not Martina Navratilova in '86 at Wimbledon, think Hilary Clinton

0:19:23 > 0:19:25cos she's awesome.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- Denise...? - Ta-da! Round layer is a really important hair curt

0:19:28 > 0:19:31and every single hair is exactly the same length.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35And then I want you to do a flick out blow dry, you know

0:19:35 > 0:19:39what I mean by that? I hope so...

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Of course you'll be ranked on this round, you have one hour

0:19:42 > 0:19:44and ten minutes, grab a blockhead, let's do it,

0:19:44 > 0:19:46off you go, good luck.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52The round layer is the most difficult cut the stylists

0:19:52 > 0:19:54have been asked to do so far.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57I'm just trying to work out how much to cut!

0:19:57 > 0:19:59It's a flattering cut because it adds volume

0:19:59 > 0:20:01and movement to the hair.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Why a round layer?

0:20:08 > 0:20:10It's fundamental to long shapes,

0:20:10 > 0:20:13short shapes, it's one of the most important haircuts you'll learn.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Each hair is evenly cut the same length all the way through.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18So, you're telling me

0:20:18 > 0:20:22every single hair on this head will be the same length?

0:20:22 > 0:20:23- Exact.- That's bonkers.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26All the same length pulled at a 90-degree angle.

0:20:26 > 0:20:27Why 90 degrees?

0:20:27 > 0:20:30You're following the head shape, it's round, the layers is round,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33- that's the 90-degrees angle, to follow.- Okey-dokey,

0:20:33 > 0:20:36well, easier said than done but let's see how our guys do, shall we?

0:20:36 > 0:20:39- Absolutely.- Yeah, can't wait.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43As with all haircuts the hair should be sectioned before it's cut

0:20:43 > 0:20:46and the round layer has a sectioning map all of its own.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48What do you think of the sectioning map?

0:20:48 > 0:20:51It looks a little bit complicated but I'm trying to get my head

0:20:51 > 0:20:53around it and trying to be systematic

0:20:53 > 0:20:56and quite logical in my approach but...

0:20:56 > 0:20:58So, you're going to work... mainly following the map?

0:20:58 > 0:21:01- I'm trying because I've not done this before.- OK.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06The best place for beginners to start is along the central section.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Working along this line they should cut the hair at

0:21:10 > 0:21:1390 degrees away from the head.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16If the hair were to stick up it would resemble a Mohican.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18The hardest bit is getting your angles right

0:21:18 > 0:21:21because you start with your first one which is always easy bringing

0:21:21 > 0:21:24it up and then you've got to get it around the head in the right angle.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26To me this is 90...

0:21:26 > 0:21:29and even though this is at the front of the head

0:21:29 > 0:21:32I don't know if that will be classed as a 90 as well?

0:21:32 > 0:21:35And that classed as 45.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37So, I'm a bit confused.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Lately I tend to cut it too short.

0:21:44 > 0:21:49The first cut the stylists make determines the length of the overall hairstyle

0:21:49 > 0:21:53because every cut made after it should be the same length.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57I don't want to make the first cut, I don't want to do it.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01Just in case I get it wrong!

0:22:04 > 0:22:06Kobi, just arriving at the right time,

0:22:06 > 0:22:09you were about to cut your first section?

0:22:09 > 0:22:12- I think so.- You don't sound very sure of yourself?- No.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14I just... I...

0:22:14 > 0:22:17What do you think is the difficult part of it?

0:22:17 > 0:22:19Just making sure that I don't cut it too short.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22- That's the length, huh?- Yeah.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26- The length which is going to guide you all the way through?- Yeah.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Oh, what the hell...

0:22:29 > 0:22:31It's not... oh, what the hell...

0:22:40 > 0:22:42So, how brave do you feel?

0:22:42 > 0:22:44- Erm...- Are you ready to do it in front of me?

0:22:44 > 0:22:46The first section...?

0:22:47 > 0:22:50- I think so.- I think you can too.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51CHUCKLING

0:22:51 > 0:22:52Come on...

0:23:14 > 0:23:17Well done... I thought you'd never do it!

0:23:21 > 0:23:24I've got it. I got it. I think I've got it.

0:23:42 > 0:23:43- Hiya.- Hi, love.

0:23:45 > 0:23:46You've got...

0:23:46 > 0:23:48- CHUCKLING - You've got your...

0:23:49 > 0:23:53- "What the hell am I doing?" face on.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56I've no idea what I'm doing to be honest with you.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00- I'm trying.- Are all these hairs the same length do you think? - I don't know, hopefully.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Have you glanced across at anybody else's creation?

0:24:03 > 0:24:07No, not yet, I'm just trying to concentrate on not cutting myself.

0:24:07 > 0:24:12Now the stylists make a cross section from ear to ear.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15Using the guide set by the first cut they move along this line

0:24:15 > 0:24:19cutting at 90 degrees, which creates a halo effect.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22This and the previous line have created a guide length

0:24:22 > 0:24:24across the head.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26I've started... where you split

0:24:26 > 0:24:29it in the middle, middle part and then down the, the... halo!

0:24:31 > 0:24:33Dominika, how's it going?

0:24:33 > 0:24:34It's going... I don't know!

0:24:34 > 0:24:37- LAUGHTER - Have you practised this haircut before?

0:24:37 > 0:24:41I've done once this haircut but it wasn't under the pressure of time.

0:24:41 > 0:24:42How you finding the sectioning map?

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- I love it, yeah, it's just a lifesaver...- It gives you a good...?

0:24:45 > 0:24:48- ..because, probably, I would have messed up.- Right.- You know...

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Each section should be cut with the hair pulled

0:24:51 > 0:24:53tight away from the head,

0:24:53 > 0:24:57at maximum tension. So, the length remains consistent.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01Once the hair has been cut along the central section

0:25:01 > 0:25:04and from ear to ear, the remainder is then cut to the same

0:25:04 > 0:25:09length as the guide by dividing it into small orange-like segments.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12I'm just trying to find my guide. I'm just trying to follow that

0:25:12 > 0:25:15just so that it's the same length all the way round,

0:25:15 > 0:25:17like they want it to be.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19I'm just quickly checking

0:25:19 > 0:25:21if all my length's OK.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23I think this side might be a tad longer.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28I going to make a brave decision...

0:25:31 > 0:25:32..and just cut.

0:25:33 > 0:25:38I just want to get this cut right, and hopefully

0:25:38 > 0:25:40just spend not as much time on the finish,

0:25:40 > 0:25:43although I know it's important, but...

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I'm trying my best to concentrate on this first.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Throughout the competition,

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Annie has struggled in the blockhead round.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53I feel more confident holding the scissors and comb,

0:25:53 > 0:25:56but that's probably the only thing that I've got a little bit better at.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00I just watch my mum.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02My mum's really good at cutting hair.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04She's just got no patience to teach me.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07"You just do this, Annie." That's what she does.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09I would say this is going quite badly.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13I've no idea what I've done so far, absolutely no clue.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15I've tried to follow the guide to make sure

0:26:15 > 0:26:16it's the same length all over,

0:26:16 > 0:26:20but whether or not I've cut it too short I don't know yet.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22I'm behind as well. I need to hurry up.

0:26:27 > 0:26:3015 minutes remain in the blockhead challenge, and everyone

0:26:30 > 0:26:35but Kobi is at the final, blow-drying stage.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38The judges have specified a blow-dry which creates

0:26:38 > 0:26:42volume at the roots and an outward flick at the ends.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45This is best achieved by applying thickening cream whilst wet

0:26:45 > 0:26:47and using a small, round brush to dry.

0:26:47 > 0:26:48How you doing?

0:26:48 > 0:26:52Badly. I'm behind by a lot.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Oh, yeah. Can you hear that, like, whirring noise?

0:26:56 > 0:26:58- I can.- Do you know what those are? - I can hear it.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00How close are you to...

0:27:00 > 0:27:01THE SPEAK OVER EACH OTHER

0:27:01 > 0:27:04- Well...- How long is it going to take to finish?

0:27:04 > 0:27:06About half an hour?

0:27:06 > 0:27:08So you're telling me THIS is what you're going to

0:27:08 > 0:27:10put in front of Alain and Denise? This?

0:27:10 > 0:27:12- I'm going to have to.- No!

0:27:15 > 0:27:17I don't know how to do it, but I'm trying to...

0:27:17 > 0:27:20just keep... The hairdryer's blowing all over the place.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23One minute remaining!

0:27:39 > 0:27:41SHE LAUGHS

0:27:50 > 0:27:53Gosh, she looks so like my mum.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57It's a bit long. It's a bit long!

0:28:01 > 0:28:05That's it, guys! Time's up!

0:28:05 > 0:28:08No more zhuzhing. Time for judging.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11Ooh... This is ridiculous.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17'The judges will be checking that all the hair is the same length

0:28:17 > 0:28:20'and that the blow-dry has been properly executed.'

0:28:20 > 0:28:22Let's have a look at Dominika.

0:28:26 > 0:28:27Tell you what -

0:28:27 > 0:28:29if I was Bill Clinton,

0:28:29 > 0:28:30I'd be all over that.

0:28:30 > 0:28:31THEY LAUGH

0:28:31 > 0:28:32I really would.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35The length, overall, as you visually look at it is looking good.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38It looks a tiny bit shorter than the block.

0:28:38 > 0:28:40The fringe looks lovely.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42Feels it's got a nice movement in it.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45Yeah, I think you've understood the technique pretty well.

0:28:45 > 0:28:51You can see that the shape is very close to the model we had.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55Ah, let's be precise here, because the length is really close.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56It's really good.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58Oh, a little shorter!

0:28:58 > 0:29:01A third of the length's shorter on the nape.

0:29:01 > 0:29:03Overall, it's very even

0:29:03 > 0:29:05and you've understood the shape that you were creating.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07Let's have a look at Kobi.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13- So you ran out of time with the blow-dry?- Yeah.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16So there isn't really a blow-dry.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18I feel if you'd been able to blow-dry it,

0:29:18 > 0:29:20I would have seen something quite good.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23Bit longer than we... The block was.

0:29:23 > 0:29:27The shape feels quite even. Looks quite even, anyway.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30You reached the right length, and then you're working through the front

0:29:30 > 0:29:33and see if it's the same. It's the same, you know?

0:29:33 > 0:29:34That's a good point.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Can you tell if he's been cutting at the right angle?

0:29:37 > 0:29:40Absolutely. This is 90 degrees.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44As you can see, if the hair's the same length on the front and...

0:29:44 > 0:29:47On the top or on the front, all the way through the line,

0:29:47 > 0:29:48we have reached the goal.

0:29:48 > 0:29:55You sacrificed the time of the blow-dry to be a lot more accurate

0:29:55 > 0:30:00into your hair cutting, and I think it's a risk you took and why not?

0:30:00 > 0:30:03Slightly too long again, but...

0:30:03 > 0:30:04- Yeah.- ..you're very close.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07What do we think of Katie's blow-dry?

0:30:13 > 0:30:15You've got a really nice flick. It's nice and shiny.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18You were tight on time, so you've actually done a very nice job.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20- It's feeling quite heavy at the front.- Yeah.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Yeah, I believe it's about...

0:30:24 > 0:30:27Yeah, I'd say a third too long to what our model was.

0:30:27 > 0:30:32The front needs to be revised as far as having... You know, that side's

0:30:32 > 0:30:37definitely longer. To me, a little bit too long. Slightly off-balance.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39It's a good attempt. It's not an easy haircut. Thank you.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49So, Annie...

0:30:49 > 0:30:54- You've had a hard time with it, have you?- Yeah.

0:30:54 > 0:30:57- First of all, you're much longer than the model we showed.- Yeah, yeah.

0:30:57 > 0:30:58- You're agreeing on that.- Yes.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01- You've gone at least twice the length that we had.- Yeah, yeah.

0:31:01 > 0:31:06You started well. It took you a long time to get the technique right.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09Eventually, yeah, it's not precise.

0:31:10 > 0:31:14- The blow-dry wasn't great.- No. - Let's get it right.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16Straightaway, I can actually see that the front

0:31:16 > 0:31:19- and the back are a lot different. - Yes.- You know, it's not quite.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21That's a good guideline on the lengths there.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24In fact, if these two had been more balanced,

0:31:24 > 0:31:27overall we'd have been presented with a better haircut.

0:31:27 > 0:31:31I think Annie's angles were slightly a little bit all over the place.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33Let's have a look at Marvin's work.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41- What about the blow-dry? - I think it looks lovely, actually.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43There we go, straightaway. A little bit shiny.

0:31:43 > 0:31:47- A little bit flat on the crown. - The effect is coming out.

0:31:47 > 0:31:48Just a bit longer in this corner here.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50But I'm going to let Alain check it.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53I really like the length you've worked on.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58You've gone straight and then the angle is coming down.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01I think you understood the technique pretty well because, visually,

0:32:01 > 0:32:03it looks really good.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05Overall, really good attempt.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09Balance within the shape. You worked your 90 degrees pretty well.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12- He came pretty close there. - All right.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15Well, you've all heard what the judges think but, obviously,

0:32:15 > 0:32:17they'd rather talk about you behind your backs

0:32:17 > 0:32:19so go put your feet up in the prep room.

0:32:23 > 0:32:27Too long. Not really the shape we were looking for.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30I hope they see it as just, like, "At least she's tried and it's not

0:32:30 > 0:32:32"because she's rubbish,

0:32:32 > 0:32:35"it's because she's not as experienced as everybody else."

0:32:37 > 0:32:41- The shape is good. I think it's got good balance.- Is just heavy.

0:32:41 > 0:32:43- A little heavy.- To here.

0:32:43 > 0:32:44I don't want to be, like...

0:32:44 > 0:32:50I don't want to be third. At least I have to be second. Sweet.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52It's got really good proportion.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55The hair's falling beautifully around.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58- Yeah, it's got good shape. - I like it.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01I'm very happy. I'm just glad that I got

0:33:01 > 0:33:04the feedback that I needed over the past

0:33:04 > 0:33:09three weeks about my finishing and things like that so, yeah, I'm...

0:33:09 > 0:33:10I'm happy.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21Hey, guys.

0:33:21 > 0:33:22Hi.

0:33:22 > 0:33:26The judges have ranked your efforts in the Blockhead Challenge.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29This week, in last place is...

0:33:29 > 0:33:30Annie.

0:33:30 > 0:33:32It is every week.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35- You're still here, though.- I know.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38In fourth place is Katie and Kobi's in third.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41Taking the silver is

0:33:41 > 0:33:42Dominika.

0:33:42 > 0:33:47- Which means this week's gold medal goes to Marvin.- Yes.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49Congratulations.

0:33:49 > 0:33:50APPLAUSE

0:33:50 > 0:33:56- Good for you. Feel good?- Yeah, I feel very good. Very, very good.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58Join me at the board. Come on, guys.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01The stylists will now pick their models for tomorrow's

0:34:01 > 0:34:03Freestyle Challenge.

0:34:03 > 0:34:08So, what's unusual about these five is...

0:34:08 > 0:34:12- The same thing we have in common. - They're all men. Yes, they're men.

0:34:12 > 0:34:18Let me tell you that the theme of tomorrow's Freestyle Challenge is

0:34:18 > 0:34:22sci-fi. We're going to see some pretty unusual stuff tomorrow,

0:34:22 > 0:34:27I'm hoping, anyway. So, Marvin, step forward. Pick a chap.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29I'm just going to keep it real.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33I don't normally work on men's hair but with my style that I've

0:34:33 > 0:34:36got tomorrow it could even work on a woman or a man.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39- hair type A, you're thinking. - Yeah, let's go for it.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43I'm quite looking forward to the theme, actually.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47So many ideas and pull a few things together and I hope that they

0:34:47 > 0:34:48can see that I've worked really hard

0:34:48 > 0:34:51on thinking about what I'm wanting to achieve.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00Day two and its the freestyle round which is

0:35:00 > 0:35:01the stylists' opportunity to shine

0:35:01 > 0:35:05and create truly memorable hairstyles.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08Let's talk about yesterday, quickly. Who impressed you?

0:35:08 > 0:35:11Dominika is still there. You know, she really knows the shape.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14She knows how to deliver every week.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17She can see exactly how to make hairstyles look beautiful.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19I'm also excited to see what Marvin's going to do.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21- He's a man on a mission.- Yeah, he did a great job on the cut.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24He's definitely listening and progressing with what we've

0:35:24 > 0:35:29- asked him to do from the previous challenges.- Who is in big trouble?

0:35:29 > 0:35:31Annie and Katie. They've really got to work hard today.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35Annie had a very bad day yesterday and Katie's was quite floaty

0:35:35 > 0:35:38so they've really got to bring it out of the bag today.

0:35:38 > 0:35:39Good morning.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44Today's the big one, it's the Freestyle Challenge.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46You have to throw everything at this one, guys,

0:35:46 > 0:35:48if you want to progress in the competition.

0:35:48 > 0:35:52As long as it screams science fiction. Denise?

0:35:52 > 0:35:57As always, it must be absolutely secure and be able to walk well.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00It's 360 degrees so we can see it from all angles.

0:36:00 > 0:36:05You have to be brave, yeah? It's out there with the innovative hairstyle.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08Push it as much as you can. It's science fiction.

0:36:08 > 0:36:12So, think laser beams, think killer robots from the future.

0:36:12 > 0:36:17You have two and half hours in which to do it. Time starts now.

0:36:17 > 0:36:18May the force be with you.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24- How are you?- Good. Thank you.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26- Looking forward to your crazy hair?- Yeah.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29I'm going to make you look a little and mental as well.

0:36:29 > 0:36:31I'm already halfway there, to be fair.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33Right. Let's get started.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36In the freestyle round, the stylists can use anything

0:36:36 > 0:36:40available in the prep room to achieve the look they're going for.

0:36:40 > 0:36:41Whoa, look at that.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45That's 60 inches of My Little Pony.

0:36:46 > 0:36:49What about working with men's hair? Will there be an advantage?

0:36:49 > 0:36:51Is there going to be a disadvantage? A challenge?

0:36:51 > 0:36:53Men's hair and women's hair is exactly the same.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56The only differences will be the hairline pattern.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58What are they going to do with the hair, though, to make it sci-fi?

0:36:58 > 0:37:01Wrap their head in tinfoil? What are they going to do?

0:37:01 > 0:37:04You can use anything you want to build shape.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06Just think of all the science-fiction films you've

0:37:06 > 0:37:08seen and just think of some of the hairstyles.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11- We're looking for the "beam me up, Scotty" factor, yes?- Absolutely.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14You'd be a good Scotty. A good female Scotty.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16I cannae give it no more, captain!

0:37:16 > 0:37:17That's good. That's really good.

0:37:26 > 0:37:30So, what science-fiction theme are going to give us?

0:37:30 > 0:37:34So, I'm going to go for almost like an exposed brain using

0:37:34 > 0:37:40braiding from probably the back of the head here right to the front.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43I want that kind of bulbous-looking brain.

0:37:43 > 0:37:44How are you finding this hair?

0:37:44 > 0:37:48The fact that it's got some texture, I think the plaits will really hold.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50- And the hairline? You're happy with it?- I love this.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53- It's like, yeah. - It's already there, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:37:53 > 0:37:56- So you've got a head start. - Yeah, I'm happy with that.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58So, Annie wants to make a brain.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00That's a difficult thing to achieve cos even some of the top

0:38:00 > 0:38:04prosthetic artists in the world struggle with that one.

0:38:04 > 0:38:07But, you know, she's a nurse. Let's see what she does.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17- Can I use your head real quick? - Yeah.- Thank you.

0:38:17 > 0:38:21- I have a rather large head, though.- That's fine. So does he.

0:38:21 > 0:38:24What I want to create is a weird sort of alien,

0:38:24 > 0:38:27extra-terrestrial hairstyle. Basically, I'm going

0:38:27 > 0:38:30to create couple of horns starting with French plaiting it down.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33I'm going to add extensions to the ends and fold them

0:38:33 > 0:38:37against each other on top to make these really sculpted horns.

0:38:37 > 0:38:41I'll be pinning the braid on top of each other rather than

0:38:41 > 0:38:42putting wire in it.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45Kobi's absolutely adamant there is no wire going in,

0:38:45 > 0:38:48so he's really sticking to raw hairdressing techniques.

0:38:50 > 0:38:54Using doughnut-shaped padding and wire, Marvin is constructing

0:38:54 > 0:38:58a frame for his design, covering it in synthetic hair extensions.

0:38:58 > 0:38:59What you building?

0:38:59 > 0:39:01I'm doing a

0:39:01 > 0:39:08- kind of half ram, half man/robot at the same time.- Right.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10He lost one of his horns in kind of a galactic war.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14You've got a story behind. Sounds great.

0:39:14 > 0:39:18I'm just trying to build the padding around my ram's horn.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21I'm going to use his hair to wrap round the majority of it

0:39:21 > 0:39:25- cos he's got really long hair. - This is the base, kind of.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27Yeah, this will be the base.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31My concern is about how he made the horn itself.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34He used doughnuts and wiring to put it all together.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37Personally, I'm not sure it's going to hold.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39This could flop quite quickly.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41And also, the consistency is not going to be as nice.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44Personally, I would have used chicken wire.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47He's covered again and again and again.

0:39:47 > 0:39:51Somehow you can see the Sellotape. I'm not sure, really.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03He's going to be like a proper warrior.

0:40:03 > 0:40:04Someone who's going to fight

0:40:04 > 0:40:07and have, like, really dynamic hairstyle.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09Action man. With some lights.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11- So we can switch him on.- Oh.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14How are you finding the hairline?

0:40:14 > 0:40:17Cos it's obviously a little further back and quite fine.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19Yeah, I was struggling a bit with this.

0:40:19 > 0:40:23I was hoping for a slightly thicker but I'm happy. It's fine.

0:40:23 > 0:40:27The interesting thing with Dominika is her male model has got a

0:40:27 > 0:40:29very fine receding hairline.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32When she was plaiting it, you've got less hair coming into the plait

0:40:32 > 0:40:34but I think, in fact, that's a positive.

0:40:34 > 0:40:36If she'd had one with a squarer hairline,

0:40:36 > 0:40:38it wouldn't have defined as much.

0:40:45 > 0:40:47I'm making... Or attempting to make some kind of...

0:40:47 > 0:40:49I'm calling them fins.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51They're going to kind of like go down the back of his head

0:40:51 > 0:40:55- in different sizes. - How many have you got?- Six.- Six.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58- Yeah, bigger going into slightly smaller...- Right.- ..that go across.

0:40:58 > 0:41:01And then sculpting the front of the hair, kind of like into it.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04- A bit alien-like. - Sounds good. Really good.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07- Are you planning to hide all this? - Yeah, I'll hide all this.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10I'm bringing his hair in to it so hopefully they will get covered.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13Katie is making the fins that she's going to place onto

0:41:13 > 0:41:15the back of the head. They seemed a little bit small.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19I'd like them big and bold just to make a strong statement out of it.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22Right now, I'm not sure what it's going to look like.

0:41:23 > 0:41:26- These braids have taken you quite some time to do, haven't they?- Yeah.

0:41:26 > 0:41:29- You've been here for about an hour or so.- Yeah.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33Where we're going at the moment, this isn't saying sci-fi to me.

0:41:33 > 0:41:34No, it won't yet.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37So, we're going for, like, an exposed brain.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41- So you've got the two sides of the...- Yes.- You get me?

0:41:41 > 0:41:42I mean, this is more like it.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45I'm talking to people and no-one is saying, "Exposed brain."

0:41:45 > 0:41:46You can tell I work in a hospital.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49We've got a little bit of a chip here that I'm going to do

0:41:49 > 0:41:50Matrix-style and put that at the back.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53- He's half man, half machine.- Yeah!

0:41:53 > 0:41:56This is going to be awesome. You're going to look like a total freak.

0:41:56 > 0:41:59- It's good to be amazing. Good luck.- Thank you, love.

0:42:04 > 0:42:08Right, I can leave you now. Going to make a ponytail.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14One hour and 20 minutes left, guys.

0:42:14 > 0:42:20I'm sort of pushed for time, so I know I've got to be fast with this.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23- How is it going?- Oh.- Oh, OK.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27My model's fell asleep.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31I think mine had. Men, eh?

0:42:32 > 0:42:36Dominika's space warrior design involves adding lights

0:42:36 > 0:42:40which need to fit into black plastic casings.

0:42:40 > 0:42:44I just need to think how I'm going to attach that.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47Cos I did not work that out yet.

0:42:47 > 0:42:53I'm basically beginning to braid the extensions into my model's hair.

0:42:53 > 0:42:57Kobi is using synthetic hair extensions as part of his design.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59I did want to actually incorporate them

0:42:59 > 0:43:04in the actual braid but the model's hair is shorter than I expected.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07At the minute, just literally pinned it on the end of the braid.

0:43:07 > 0:43:12One of the things that's challenging with hair extensions is the join.

0:43:12 > 0:43:16You know, how you incorporate that fake hair to the real hair.

0:43:16 > 0:43:18And that is an art in its own.

0:43:18 > 0:43:22And you can see with Kobi, that's what he's wanting to make sure.

0:43:22 > 0:43:24It's not properly attached yet.

0:43:24 > 0:43:28I'm going to actually incorporate it in a minute after I've plaited it.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31It's funny how, like, you can start off with something and be like,

0:43:31 > 0:43:33- "What? I don't understand."- Yeah.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36Annie is also using braids made out of extensions.

0:43:36 > 0:43:40She's pinning hers onto the model's head.

0:43:40 > 0:43:46- This is looking more like it. - A brain?- Yeah.- Are you sure?- Yeah.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49I love the cable ties.

0:43:49 > 0:43:52Dominika's found a solution for securing the lights

0:43:52 > 0:43:54and their casings to the head.

0:43:54 > 0:43:57- Does it feel more secure now?- Yeah.

0:43:57 > 0:44:03- It doesn't hurt or anything?- Hurt. - Hurts a bit? Where does it hurt?

0:44:04 > 0:44:07- Is it bearable?- Mmmm.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16Have you seen the lady who's supposed to be doing your hair?

0:44:16 > 0:44:17Briefly.

0:44:17 > 0:44:22With only an hour left, Katie has yet to touch her model's hair.

0:44:22 > 0:44:26- Hi.- Hi. You do know your model's head is in there.- I know, yeah.

0:44:26 > 0:44:29- I've kind of deserted him, haven't I?- What's going on?

0:44:29 > 0:44:32- I'm making fins, which aren't really going very well.- You're making fins?

0:44:32 > 0:44:35- Yeah.- How long are you going to be an year before you start getting

0:44:35 > 0:44:37stuck into Thor's head out there?

0:44:37 > 0:44:41- Well, I've got one more fin to make then I'm over there.- OK, cool.

0:44:48 > 0:44:51I'm about to put a pin in your head. I'm sorry.

0:44:54 > 0:44:56I need to hurry up.

0:44:56 > 0:44:59I keep adding my plaits now. It's supposed to be just a ponytail

0:44:59 > 0:45:00but now it's a plait.

0:45:00 > 0:45:04Dominika has added a string of fairy lights to her design

0:45:04 > 0:45:06but is struggling to hide the wire.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09Now I'm making pom-poms cos pom-poms are a good resolution

0:45:09 > 0:45:11to anything if you want to hide something.

0:45:11 > 0:45:14So we're just going to do the pom-pom.

0:45:14 > 0:45:18Katie has finally pinned her fins to the model's head...

0:45:18 > 0:45:22I'm attempting to sculpt with not a lot of time left.

0:45:22 > 0:45:26..and now has just 30 minutes to work the natural hair around them

0:45:26 > 0:45:28and complete her design.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32I'm kind of rushing it. It's a holy show of a mess.

0:45:34 > 0:45:36Oh, wow. This is awesome.

0:45:36 > 0:45:38Pff. Really?

0:45:38 > 0:45:41- Really. You're not happy with this? - No. It's not what I wanted.

0:45:41 > 0:45:42You said a warrior from the future

0:45:42 > 0:45:47and there is no mistaking this guy's clearly from the year 3000.

0:45:47 > 0:45:50OK, yeah, so later on we need to push this one up.

0:45:51 > 0:45:58Oh, man. Forget year 3000. This guy's from the year 3,000,000!

0:45:58 > 0:46:02- How are you feeling about this? You loving it?- Yeah.

0:46:02 > 0:46:06Marvin has attached his horn and is now making a mask

0:46:06 > 0:46:10for his half man, half ram/robot sci-fi design.

0:46:11 > 0:46:13I'm putting these stones, like, gravel,

0:46:13 > 0:46:18from when he had his horn torn off his head and left to die in

0:46:18 > 0:46:22the middle of the galactic floor, so he's got a face full of gravel.

0:46:26 > 0:46:31With ten minutes remaining, all of the models' hair is changing colour.

0:46:31 > 0:46:32It's more silver than grey.

0:46:35 > 0:46:40I'm trying to disguise everything with spray. It's not working.

0:46:40 > 0:46:45They're using a wash-out spray that colours the surface of the hair.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48Just hide everything, all the mess, with pot scrubs.

0:46:50 > 0:46:54Yes. Yes 1,000 times.

0:46:54 > 0:46:59You had me with the horn of plenty not now you're adding

0:46:59 > 0:47:02the smashed-in metal skull with the red eyeball.

0:47:03 > 0:47:05That's the future, baby.

0:47:09 > 0:47:12What's this at the front here? Like a big kiss?

0:47:12 > 0:47:14- A smudge.- Wait a minute, are you joking?

0:47:14 > 0:47:17- Is that a smudge or did you really mean it?- It's a smudge.- Really?

0:47:17 > 0:47:20- It's a smudge.- Well, wipe it off. You've got about two minutes.

0:47:20 > 0:47:22- I'm trying to get it off with a wet wipe.- All right.

0:47:27 > 0:47:28One minute remaining.

0:47:34 > 0:47:36What have I got left to do?

0:47:36 > 0:47:38Hide all the pins, make it look less of a disaster.

0:47:53 > 0:47:56Time's up, guys.

0:47:56 > 0:48:00Come back from the future to the present.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02Yeah, all right, Kobi.

0:48:02 > 0:48:04You want to try writing these things? They're not easy.

0:48:04 > 0:48:06It judgment day. Terminator 2.

0:48:06 > 0:48:09Let's go and see Dominika's efforts here. Mix it up a bit.

0:48:09 > 0:48:11Yeah.

0:48:11 > 0:48:15MUSIC: "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss (2001 Theme)

0:48:23 > 0:48:25Big pimpin'. Big daddy pimp.

0:48:31 > 0:48:39- Does this scream sci-fi?- Yeah, I believe so.- One.- Definitely.- Two.

0:48:39 > 0:48:43- Beautiful.- Warrior king.- Full house. A warrior king from where?- Space.

0:48:43 > 0:48:45Yes. Vague, but it works.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48There's definitely all the elements are there.

0:48:48 > 0:48:49There's a big construction.

0:48:49 > 0:48:53The whole Mohican element to it cut out into a ponytail

0:48:53 > 0:48:56element at the back. It's really even.

0:48:56 > 0:48:59The light itself is quite a fun aspect of it.

0:48:59 > 0:49:03I do like the cut-out on the front. What do you think, Denise?

0:49:03 > 0:49:05It looks incredible.

0:49:05 > 0:49:08It's very clean and you've got that nice diamond shape that you

0:49:08 > 0:49:11wanted to create. And the textures are good.

0:49:11 > 0:49:13And I think the whole profile looks stunning.

0:49:13 > 0:49:16So, overall, we are saying she's completed the brief

0:49:16 > 0:49:18and transported us to a galaxy far, far away.

0:49:18 > 0:49:21- Definitely a galaxy far away.- Oh.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23MUSIC: "Out Of Space" by The Prodigy

0:49:23 > 0:49:26# I'm gonna send him to outer space

0:49:27 > 0:49:30# To find another race

0:49:30 > 0:49:34# I'm gonna send him to outer space. #

0:49:34 > 0:49:37Does it scream sci-fi? That's what we want to know.

0:49:37 > 0:49:40Not sure if it screams it but there's definitely strong elements there.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43It could have been refined a lot more as far as building up

0:49:43 > 0:49:45its shape of what you wanted to do.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48You were getting a fabulous movement through here

0:49:48 > 0:49:51but these ridges didn't stay up and strong.

0:49:51 > 0:49:53You spent a lot of time building those frames

0:49:53 > 0:49:55and actually you hadn't worked the hair first.

0:49:55 > 0:49:58I'd have worked those shapes in first cos then while you were

0:49:58 > 0:50:02making the frames, you'd have known if they were strong enough.

0:50:02 > 0:50:06Let's take a look at Marvin's vision of the future.

0:50:06 > 0:50:07SCI-FI MUSIC PLAYS

0:50:16 > 0:50:19Have you briefed your model to be as robotic as possible?

0:50:19 > 0:50:20Jesus, he's a big boy.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24I wasn't expecting that. He's up there.

0:50:26 > 0:50:28You don't want to mess with that guy.

0:50:28 > 0:50:31You wouldn't like to meet him in a dark alley, would you?

0:50:31 > 0:50:35- Does this scream sci-fi?- Yes.- Yes. - Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

0:50:35 > 0:50:39It's got good points of bringing out that magic shape.

0:50:39 > 0:50:42It's... You know, it's bulky enough and it comes out.

0:50:42 > 0:50:46Even through to the mask is quite a fun idea.

0:50:46 > 0:50:49Within your positioning of the horns, to me,

0:50:49 > 0:50:53they should have been a little bit forward. You sprayed quite a lot.

0:50:53 > 0:50:56Somehow it evens the whole shape out

0:50:56 > 0:51:00- but you also feel that it's hiding quite a lot.- It's a great shape.

0:51:00 > 0:51:02It was really adventurous, really bold.

0:51:02 > 0:51:06It's very large, which is incredible, but this is very messy.

0:51:06 > 0:51:08This is very vulnerable at the end

0:51:08 > 0:51:11so he really is in risk of having another horn ripped out.

0:51:13 > 0:51:16MUSIC: "Spaceman" by Babylon Zoo

0:51:16 > 0:51:21# Spaceman, I always wanted you to go into space, man

0:51:21 > 0:51:24# Intergalactic Christ. #

0:51:27 > 0:51:31- Does it scream sci-fi? - I really think so.- Yeah.

0:51:31 > 0:51:36This proves it. On the back we have the little circuit board.

0:51:36 > 0:51:40It's a real... Really nice touch. The hair is quite curly.

0:51:40 > 0:51:44There's a lot of little hair breaks out as it comes at a little bit.

0:51:44 > 0:51:47It came out even more when you started spraying it.

0:51:47 > 0:51:51Even through the sides, you've lost little bit more definition within it.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54It's a bit of a shame that you weren't able to sleek this out.

0:51:54 > 0:51:56I really, really hard, though, like.

0:51:56 > 0:52:00- It would have been great to see it a little tidier.- I know.

0:52:00 > 0:52:04- I thought a lot tidier.- I know what you mean.- Than what it is.

0:52:04 > 0:52:07Let's move on and power him down. Beep, beep, beep.

0:52:07 > 0:52:09DENISE LAUGHS

0:52:09 > 0:52:12MUSIC: "Star Wars Main Theme" by John Williams

0:52:20 > 0:52:26- Does it scream sci-fi?- Absolutely. It screams elegant alien prince.

0:52:26 > 0:52:30Yeah, I believe so. A very predator type of elements, shapes

0:52:30 > 0:52:36and even through both fins coming into the back. Very even.

0:52:36 > 0:52:41The construction is pretty remarkable, I have to say.

0:52:41 > 0:52:44I like the way that you evened it all out with a spray.

0:52:44 > 0:52:47What happens with nylon hair, it's a bit to shiny

0:52:47 > 0:52:49and it looks a little too fake.

0:52:49 > 0:52:51It's a really good idea to finish off with that.

0:52:51 > 0:52:54It's really immaculate with the braiding.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57It's beautifully done, I have to say. Very, very even.

0:52:57 > 0:53:02The technique is there. You knew what you wanted and you did it.

0:53:02 > 0:53:06Thanks for all your sterling work guys.

0:53:06 > 0:53:10The judges will now deliberate, who wins the freestyle round

0:53:10 > 0:53:12and who will be going home.

0:53:14 > 0:53:17Even though I'd worked out my times and it should've been fine,

0:53:17 > 0:53:20I just ran out of time so it was just awful.

0:53:20 > 0:53:23I hope that they see that I'm really hard-working and that I really

0:53:23 > 0:53:27do try my best and they'll put me through and give me another chance.

0:53:27 > 0:53:31I do hope that I'm in the chances of winning the freestyle.

0:53:31 > 0:53:32I've not been at this point before.

0:53:32 > 0:53:37Normally, it's sort of scared I might be going.

0:53:37 > 0:53:41- Who impressed you in the freestyle? - Kobi and Dominika.

0:53:41 > 0:53:45We saw two totally different styles there. Totally different results.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48The line between the two of them is really tight.

0:53:48 > 0:53:51One is sort of colour and spectacular

0:53:51 > 0:53:55and the other one is a raw hairdressing. It's beautifully done.

0:53:55 > 0:53:58It's immaculate. So it's really tight.

0:53:58 > 0:54:00But taking into account all the rounds of the last

0:54:00 > 0:54:04- couple of days, who's in trouble? - Katie, she's floundering a bit.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07Katie doubts herself quite a lot and she just lost her way.

0:54:07 > 0:54:11And Annie... Annie in this freestyle round,

0:54:11 > 0:54:13I mean, that's normally her strength.

0:54:13 > 0:54:15The things that she's done have been incredible,

0:54:15 > 0:54:17but this has really been her weakest.

0:54:17 > 0:54:19They have been kind of struggled.

0:54:19 > 0:54:23Even something where they don't feel confident about what they're doing.

0:54:23 > 0:54:25Well, your job gets harder and harder every week.

0:54:25 > 0:54:26This has to be the hardest one yet.

0:54:26 > 0:54:29Oh, this is really, really difficult. This is...

0:54:29 > 0:54:32I'm overjoyed that it has nothing to do with me. Good luck.

0:54:34 > 0:54:40You saw the raw shape, you saw the alien, you saw the sci-fi.

0:54:40 > 0:54:42There was a lot going on.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45It was maybe overkill.

0:54:46 > 0:54:50She's struggling, she's shaking and she knows it.

0:54:52 > 0:54:53All right, let's do it.

0:54:55 > 0:54:59Thank you so much for all your hard work over the last couple of days.

0:54:59 > 0:55:01You just get better and better and better.

0:55:01 > 0:55:06But, as you know, there can only be one winner of the freestyle round.

0:55:06 > 0:55:08And this week, after much deliberation,

0:55:08 > 0:55:10the judges have decided that person is going to be...

0:55:14 > 0:55:15..Kobi.

0:55:15 > 0:55:17- Oh, my God.- Congratulations.

0:55:17 > 0:55:18APPLAUSE

0:55:18 > 0:55:19You crushed it.

0:55:20 > 0:55:25- How does that feel?- Shocked. But, yeah, pleased.- Well done.

0:55:25 > 0:55:30Congratulations. Now it's time for that bit none of us like.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33It's horrible because we've become friends, we've become family

0:55:33 > 0:55:36but unfortunately we are about to say goodbye to one of you.

0:55:36 > 0:55:40And the person they've decided to ask to leave...

0:55:40 > 0:55:41is...

0:55:49 > 0:55:50..Annie.

0:55:50 > 0:55:54- Oh, Annie. You've been amazing. - Thank you.

0:55:54 > 0:55:56- Unbelievable work. - Thank you.- Fantastic work.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59Annie, we had to send her home. So sad.

0:55:59 > 0:56:04But she still has high, high standards. She's got a great flair.

0:56:04 > 0:56:06She's got a great vision how to do it.

0:56:06 > 0:56:09It's just lacking a little bit in techniques somehow.

0:56:09 > 0:56:10Some of this, Annie.

0:56:10 > 0:56:13This week it was very weak for her.

0:56:13 > 0:56:16I think she's reached her peak in this competition

0:56:16 > 0:56:18and I think it was her time to go.

0:56:18 > 0:56:21Yeah, so I won the freestyle round.

0:56:21 > 0:56:23I did think it was going to be Dominika with her light-up

0:56:23 > 0:56:25sci-fi hairstyle.

0:56:25 > 0:56:27But I was really pleased it was me.

0:56:29 > 0:56:31I love working with people. I love working with hair.

0:56:31 > 0:56:34I'm pleased with what I've done and I feel everyone is proud of me

0:56:34 > 0:56:36to get this far and I think, you know,

0:56:36 > 0:56:39if I can make someone feel better about themselves

0:56:39 > 0:56:43and create something inspiring them, you know, that's me, I'm happy.

0:56:49 > 0:56:52Next time on Hair...

0:56:52 > 0:56:56- This is the anarchist. Oh, mama. - I don't know where it's going on.

0:56:56 > 0:56:59I've never seen the like this before. You're properly miffed.

0:56:59 > 0:57:01The theme of the Freestyle Challenge is brides.

0:57:01 > 0:57:03We want to be blown away. This is your last chance.

0:57:03 > 0:57:06I've got a feeling I'm not going to get it finished.

0:57:06 > 0:57:08- You'll be all right. - That's beautifully done.

0:57:08 > 0:57:10- This is bold and brave. - Avant-garde and exciting.
