0:00:02 > 0:00:04Welcome to Hair. It's the semifinal and only four people

0:00:04 > 0:00:08remain in the fight to be named Britain's best amateur hairstylist.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11'Last week, the stylists attempted to impress judges Alain Pichon

0:00:11 > 0:00:14'and Denise McAdam with elegant up-dos.'

0:00:14 > 0:00:16My birthday obviously. It's absolutely stunning.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19- '..precision cutting...' - I don't want to make the first cut.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22'..and out-of-this-world, sci-fi creations.'

0:00:22 > 0:00:25May the force be with you.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28'16-year-old Kobi impressed with his elegant alien.'

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Your construction is pretty remarkable, I have to say.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33'But for critical care nurse Annie...'

0:00:33 > 0:00:36I've no idea what I'm doing to be honest with you.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39'..her time in the competition was over.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43'This week, it's the semifinal and just four contestants remain.'

0:00:43 > 0:00:46We want to blown away - it's your last chance.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48'The stylists will have to stand up to the pressure...'

0:00:48 > 0:00:51- I'm not going to get it finished. - This is the anarchist.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54'..and show the judges they have what it takes...'

0:00:54 > 0:00:59- I don't know where it's gone wrong. - The theme is brides.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00'..to walk up the aisle to the final.'

0:01:00 > 0:01:02I just feel like I'm going to go home.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04They are going to have to reach a level

0:01:04 > 0:01:06that they've never been before.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07- Almost perfect.- Wow!

0:01:07 > 0:01:09The judges are ready,

0:01:09 > 0:01:12the stylists can't wait to get started and neither can I.

0:01:12 > 0:01:13Let's get to work on Hair.

0:01:28 > 0:01:29Good morning.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Welcome back, semifinalists.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Ready for more hair?

0:01:34 > 0:01:37As usual, in the first round, the judges want to see you

0:01:37 > 0:01:40incorporating a set element into your hairstyles.

0:01:40 > 0:01:45This week's set element is, the punk classic, the mohican.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49The judges want to see gravity-defying mohicans.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Judges, tell them more.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55From here to here at a 90-degree angle all the way.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58I want to see sleek, sharp at the sides, and,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00of course, secure.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Also, we are looking for perfect symmetry.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05It's going to be completely central

0:02:05 > 0:02:10and the width has to be the same from the front hairline to the back.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Sounds easy enough. You have one hour and 15 minutes.

0:02:13 > 0:02:14Your time starts now.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20In this challenge, the stylists have chosen a model with the hair type

0:02:20 > 0:02:21they want to work with.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25- You OK?- Yeah. You? - Good thank you.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27- Hello, how are you?- I'm fine.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28Nice to meet you.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31- You know what you're having?- Yes.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38I don't even think I'm going to take the moisture out of your hair.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Why, Alain, have you chosen the mohican?

0:02:42 > 0:02:46I think it's really important to learn how to fix the hair,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49make it stand up all the way and how to make it hold.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51So there's a technique for it,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53that's what we're expecting from this challenge.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55What's the perfect mohican?

0:02:55 > 0:02:57The proportions are very important, cos obviously

0:02:57 > 0:03:01if you're a wider mohican, you have to be much higher to carry that.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02It should balance.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06You can buzz it or you can slick it, lift it up into a pony tail.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09- Many variations.- It's their interpretation that we've asked for,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13but it would be really good to see a classic mohican.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Threatening and Edgy, the mohican

0:03:18 > 0:03:20originated with Native American warriors,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24who plucked, rather than shaved the sides of their head.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27It was picked up in the 1970s by young British punks who used

0:03:27 > 0:03:29flour and water, sugar

0:03:29 > 0:03:32and even glue to style their gravity-defying mohicans.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Today, the edge has been taken out of the style

0:03:35 > 0:03:38and it's been seen on the catwalk and football field.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Working with Afro-Caribbean hair is the norm for me.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50It's something that I'm very familiar with, so working with it

0:03:50 > 0:03:51at this stage of the competition,

0:03:51 > 0:03:54hopefully becomes an advantage to me.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Home hairstylist Marvin has his neighbour's queuing up

0:03:59 > 0:04:02on the sofa for the latest hair trends.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05His mohican will be formed by a series of pompoms

0:04:05 > 0:04:08which will be shaped into arches along the head.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10- Marvin.- Hi, Denise.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12So how are you going to interpret the mohican?

0:04:12 > 0:04:14My inspiration comes from the Loch Ness Monster.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17I'm going to get my base structure down with the hair bands,

0:04:17 > 0:04:22so I'm going to bring it up and back and connect it into each one.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24- I notice you're using the bristle brush.- Yeah.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27- Why is that? - With Afro-Caribbean hair,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30we have a lot more problem of smoothing the hair over,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34so I find using the comb to tackle the problem underneath

0:04:34 > 0:04:36and then using the bristle brush to smooth over on top,

0:04:36 > 0:04:39it gives it a cleaner finish.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42- That's why I prefer to use... - And it works well with the pomade?

0:04:42 > 0:04:43It works very well.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Marvin was using a bristle brush where I would use a comb.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51He's getting a really good effect.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55He's using pomade, it's a cross between a gel and a cream.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57You've really got to brush it in well.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Traditionally a men's styling product,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03pomade first became popular in the early 20th century.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07It's associated with slick styles such as ducktails and quiffs,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10making it a great choice for creating a sleek mohican.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Semifinals - just going to have to put in everything.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Serious business now, in it to win it.

0:05:19 > 0:05:2216-year-old Kobi is keen to graduate from his Saturday job

0:05:22 > 0:05:25at his local salon.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29He plans to create a modern version of the Mohican with shaved sides.

0:05:31 > 0:05:32- Hello.- Hello.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34You got long hair there, what's the plan?

0:05:34 > 0:05:38I'm going to be actually cutting in the mohican to create that

0:05:38 > 0:05:40classic shape with the shaved sides.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41I'm going to make a twist on it -

0:05:41 > 0:05:45I'm not going to have such a small panel, going quite wide.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48So what made you think of the wider mohican?

0:05:48 > 0:05:51I wanted to make it more current, I wanted to put my own

0:05:51 > 0:05:54twist on it so it looks a bit more trendy, a bit more cool.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Can't wait to see it.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01The plan is to be perfect, shiny, slick, very precise.

0:06:02 > 0:06:0629-year-old Dominika studied art and design in Poland and brings the same

0:06:06 > 0:06:11attention to detail to her work as a photographer's assistant.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15She is attempting a 1970s-inspired classic punk mohican.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- Hello, Dominika.- Hi.- You OK?

0:06:20 > 0:06:21So far, yeah.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Can't wait to shave all the mohican off.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26What you going to spend your most time on?

0:06:26 > 0:06:28To section the perfect mohican.

0:06:28 > 0:06:29- Sectioning?- Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32And then I'll probably cut to shorten,

0:06:32 > 0:06:33as I doubt I can stand that up.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37You would find it too difficult to leave it that length?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Yeah, I don't want to...

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Yeah, it's going to be too long to keep it straight.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43OK, carry on.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49I've seen Kobi and Dominika are both

0:06:49 > 0:06:52doing buzz haircut on the side with a mohawk.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Right now, they are using perfection within their sectioning,

0:06:55 > 0:06:57very equal on both sides.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Kobi, his mohican, is looking a little bit too wide

0:07:01 > 0:07:03and a little bit short maybe.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Dominika says she's not going to keep the whole length which is

0:07:06 > 0:07:09a great shame, that's what makes it so effective.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14I'm planning to bring all the sides up smooth,

0:07:14 > 0:07:19as smooth as I can get them and then triangular partings coming up.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23Mum-of-two Katie has five years' experience in fashion design

0:07:23 > 0:07:28and loves to be brave, using bold sculptured styles and shapes.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30She will be slicking up the sides and will form

0:07:30 > 0:07:34the mohican by moulding round shapes along the centre of the head.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36You're going to have to help me out

0:07:36 > 0:07:37cos I've never worked with your hair before.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40OK. Obviously, it's been washed.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42- Stretch it out a little bit?- Yeah.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46Hi. This is a different hair type for you.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48First time ever I've worked with Afro-Caribbean hair.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- First time ever?!- Yeah.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52I thought I'd push the boundaries a little bit on myself.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- I don't want to stay safe. - How do you find the texture?

0:07:55 > 0:07:57It's easy to shape.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59It's a lot easier than I thought I was going to be,

0:07:59 > 0:08:01cos I can work with it, so...

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Are you using product on it?

0:08:03 > 0:08:07We've used serum and pomade to smooth out.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12One side done.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16With Katie and also with Marvin, using African hair is a great idea.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20It moulds really easily and they don't have to use clippers and shave

0:08:20 > 0:08:21the sides and things like that.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24They get a great mohican shape with hair.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26OK, I'm going to chop the hair

0:08:26 > 0:08:30because I'm going to use the clippers with dry hair.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32Bye-bye, hair.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38The typical mohican is shaved.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40That's what is says in the dictionary.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43If it's put-up then it's not a mohican.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45Hopefully, the judges will see that I've done my research

0:08:45 > 0:08:47and I know what I'm doing.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52- You ready?- Yeah.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Clipper work is fairly straightforward.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03You just have to work upwards, against the growth of the hair.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08- I think you look good, no? - I really like it actually.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11I wasn't sure if I would, but it's really cool.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14Oh, mamma! This is radical.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Yep, definitely.

0:09:16 > 0:09:17Did you ask permission first?

0:09:17 > 0:09:22- Of course. - This is a big change!- Yeah.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23I now have longer hair than you.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- Yeah.- This is insane. What are we going for?

0:09:26 > 0:09:28A classic mohawk with the shaved sides,

0:09:28 > 0:09:30as that's what a mohawk is.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32So brave. I'm very impressed.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34It's a different way of life, being a punk.

0:09:34 > 0:09:39Have you ever smashed up a hotel room, or...thrown a TV out a window?

0:09:39 > 0:09:40- No.- I'm going to leave you to it

0:09:40 > 0:09:43because I can't wait to see the finished article here.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50Marvin stands up his mohican by putting hair bands around

0:09:50 > 0:09:53a series of ponytails and pinning to the head.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01It's going OK-ish.

0:10:01 > 0:10:02Could have been quicker.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Now that the sides have been shaved, Kobi and Dominika

0:10:06 > 0:10:09must create the mohican by cutting the remaining hair.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13To do this, the hair is elevated 90 degrees from the head

0:10:13 > 0:10:15and all cut to the same length.

0:10:17 > 0:10:18- You all right?- Yeah.

0:10:19 > 0:10:2130 mins left, everyone. 30 minutes left.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27And the award for the person a mohican is most going to suit

0:10:27 > 0:10:29goes to this guy.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33It already looks awesome.

0:10:33 > 0:10:34Glad you think so.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38You had long hair before and you were hiding this jaw of steel

0:10:38 > 0:10:40you've got going on there.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43As you can see, Dominika is very good at getting hair to stand

0:10:43 > 0:10:46upright - look no further than her bonce.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49It's almost like a plunger for dynamite.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Kaboom.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00The key to sculpting a good mohican is using product correctly to

0:11:00 > 0:11:02make it stand upright and stay put.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12I've put very strong mousse, like loads of it.

0:11:12 > 0:11:13To make the hair stand up,

0:11:13 > 0:11:17defying gravity 90 degrees, it's good to blow dry before

0:11:17 > 0:11:20the hair's wet to put a little gel on the roots,

0:11:20 > 0:11:22so you get a kick right away.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25I would expect a lot of hairspray, a little backcombing,

0:11:25 > 0:11:27hairspray and blow-drying as you go along.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Make sure it's always central, working one side,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31working the other, one side,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33the other - all the way through to the top.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Dominika applies hairspray to the dry hair

0:11:43 > 0:11:47and uses the heat of the straighteners to fuse it together.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49What I'm going to do put a little bit of backcomb in it,

0:11:49 > 0:11:51a little bit of clay, just give it some height

0:11:51 > 0:11:54and just hope it stays there with a lot of hairspray.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01I'm trying to decide whether to leave it

0:12:01 > 0:12:03as a full-on mohican,

0:12:03 > 0:12:06or to do my original plan

0:12:06 > 0:12:09and bring it down into shapes...

0:12:12 > 0:12:14..like balls.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16I quite like that though.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18It looks incredible, I love this.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21I was thinking, Scotland, mohawk, Loch Ness Monster -

0:12:21 > 0:12:23yeah, it could work.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Your mind really does work in a marvellous way.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28That's why they call you Marvellous Marvin.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30How you feeling about being in the semifinal?

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Have you visualised yourself winning this?

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Many times and different ways in different outfits.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Trust me, I've done it all! I've done it all.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Who do you think's your greatest threat in the room?

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Who's the one person you're secretly having nightmares about?

0:12:43 > 0:12:46- The eyes go straight to go straight to Dominika.- Yep.

0:12:46 > 0:12:51Cos she's so innovative, and even with her hair day-to-day.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Can you not do that with your hair?

0:12:53 > 0:12:54No, Steve, I really couldn't.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56A good stylist could, Marvin.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I'd probably make a wig and do it.

0:13:04 > 0:13:08With just ten minutes to go, Katie has decided to stick to her

0:13:08 > 0:13:11original plan and moulds the hair into round shapes.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15I think you've managed to make the mohawk look elegant somehow.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18I would put this on my mother.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20I'm going to put it out there -

0:13:20 > 0:13:23this is 100% a mohican, yes? It is?

0:13:23 > 0:13:27- I think so, hair is 90 degrees... - You think so?!

0:13:27 > 0:13:29It's from the front of the head to the back of the head.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31That was the brief, wasn't it?

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Same width all the way down, 90 degrees off the head.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36This is a mohawk - a very elegant one at that.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Sorry, a mohican. Americans say mohawk, because they are lazy.

0:13:41 > 0:13:4260 seconds.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05Time's up, guys.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09Please, step away from your punk

0:14:09 > 0:14:13and, please, do not smash up your work stations.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Alain and Denise are looking for well-proportioned

0:14:15 > 0:14:20and totally central mohicans which stand up at 90 degrees.

0:14:20 > 0:14:21The judges are coming.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24What's Marvin's handiwork looking like over here?

0:14:29 > 0:14:33It's a really good styling variation of the mohican.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Let's see if it's central...

0:14:36 > 0:14:38I want to push it a little bit in the middle here.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Just making sure that it's right in the middle,

0:14:40 > 0:14:41but it stays in the middle.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44So it's got to be solid, from the roots till the end.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48It's definitely 90 degrees, all the way round, which we can see.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51I absolutely love what you've done with the hairline.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54- Thank you.- Did you just use the pomade or the hairspray.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58A bit of gel and my towel comb.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00No, cos it's lovely, and it's a nice...

0:15:00 > 0:15:03When you've got a fine hairline that you maybe couldn't have taken back...

0:15:03 > 0:15:06- Yeah.- You've made a nice - almost henna effect.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09It's a great variation on the styling,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12really think you pulled it off there.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16Little bit biased towards the Nessie element there?

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Yeah, he won me!

0:15:18 > 0:15:19Like being back home.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22- Nice work, Marvin. - Thank you.- Very clever.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25- Yeah.- Very good. - Let's go see Katie. Nice work.

0:15:26 > 0:15:27What's Katie doing?

0:15:33 > 0:15:37- Feels a little low.- Mm.- In fact it's a little wider than it's higher.

0:15:37 > 0:15:42- What about the central positioning? - Let's see how it suits...

0:15:42 > 0:15:43within the middle of it...

0:15:43 > 0:15:48Again, as wide as it is, it's kind of more difficult to judge.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50It sort of reached the 90 degrees, but it goes a little bit flat here.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52- Yeah.- So it needed to go higher. - Yeah.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55- The minute we start to lift it... - Yeah.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58Even working on your beauti... I mean, it's beautifully done.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01- Yeah, I can see it now! - We've actually - look!

0:16:01 > 0:16:05- We've reached the criteria. We're at 90 degrees now.- Mm.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08Can I get a yea or nay, does this qualify as a mohican?

0:16:08 > 0:16:12No, it's not a mohican. It's too wide and not high enough.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14You just got your proportions wrong.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15To Kobi.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24You created a variation of the mohican.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27I would say variation because it's a little bit wider.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Now, let's see if it's in the middle.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34Need to lift it up to see what's going on, to tell you the truth.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37It's even higher a little bit one side than the other.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Not completely even.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Isn't it supposed to be a bit of a messy mohican, though?

0:16:41 > 0:16:44That's the idea, isn't it? It's punk, isn't it?

0:16:44 > 0:16:46It's anarchy! This woman's head is anarchy.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49- It's certainly a modern, very feminine twist on the mohican.- Yeah.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51- Which is what you wanted to achieve. - Mm-hm.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54You were at 90 degrees all the way round,

0:16:54 > 0:16:57but what happened when Alain touched it? It fell.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59- Yeah. - So you were not secure in the base.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01So we lost your 90 degrees there.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04- Can I say one more thing?- Yeah. - Too much hairspray.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08- And that's why you've got the wrong type of separation here.- Yeah.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10You've just got brittle...and it's just doing this.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14It's not flowing softly, because you were just jetting that hairspray.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16- A brave effort...- Absolutely. - ..and an even braver model.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18- Nice one, Kobi.- Yeah.

0:17:18 > 0:17:19Dominika.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Wow, it's all finished, and all perfect.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31Look - it's completely central.

0:17:31 > 0:17:36This is the anarchist. It's even all the way through.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Love the finish of it.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40The only thing I would have said is it's a shame -

0:17:40 > 0:17:44you had this length, and I don't know how secure or confident

0:17:44 > 0:17:47you felt about making it hold all the way through.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49A little bigger, the more of a chief he became.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51- I like the length, actually. - Yeah, I do too.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53I think it's nice and sharp. It's really great.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55You've definitely got 90 degrees,

0:17:55 > 0:18:00you've really stayed true to the modern history of the mohican.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03You two would make quite a funky couple.

0:18:03 > 0:18:04- Shall we buy a hat?- Yep.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08- Well done, it looks stunning. - Cheers.- Brilliant.- Thanks.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11- That was nicer!- Told you.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Thanks for your sterling work, guys.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17The sanctuary of the prep room awaits you. Go take a break.

0:18:17 > 0:18:18You deserve it. Well done.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24(Give him your number! Give him your number.)

0:18:24 > 0:18:27- Oh, man!- Oh, man.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28Oh, man!

0:18:28 > 0:18:31- KOBI:- I knew it wasn't how I wanted it to look.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34There was too much hairspray on it. That was not intentional.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37- DOMINIKA:- I feel confident, you know? I got really good comments.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41Now I want to make little village full of mohawk people.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Next up, it's the blockhead round

0:18:46 > 0:18:49and this week the judges want the amateurs to get to grips

0:18:49 > 0:18:53with a totally new area of hairdressing - barbering.

0:18:55 > 0:19:00This week the judges want you to create your first short hairstyle.

0:19:00 > 0:19:05It's the classic short back and sides with the square top

0:19:05 > 0:19:07As you can see, it's a square shape.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09So we want to see that horizontally and vertically.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12The key of barbering technique is the scissor over comb.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Usually worked on the side and the back,

0:19:15 > 0:19:18that's where you cut the hair shorter than your fingers.

0:19:18 > 0:19:20So once you've done the basic cut,

0:19:20 > 0:19:23- you finish it using scissors over comb.- That's right.

0:19:23 > 0:19:24Easy.

0:19:24 > 0:19:28As usual, you will be ranked on this so do your very best work.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30I should mention Kobi will have an advantage,

0:19:30 > 0:19:31because he can just look in the mirror.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33Yeah!

0:19:33 > 0:19:34Extraordinary.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37You have one hour and 15 minutes in which to complete this task.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Grab a blockhead and get to it. Good luck.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47It looks like that guy who's hair you cut this morning,

0:19:47 > 0:19:48Dominika, doesn't it?

0:19:48 > 0:19:49Another boyfriend.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51THEY LAUGH

0:19:53 > 0:19:56He's a very attractive man.

0:19:56 > 0:19:57Even got a wonky eye!

0:19:58 > 0:20:01The short back and sides first became fashionable

0:20:01 > 0:20:03when American college students sported it in the 1920s.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05I'm not feeling confident at all.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10This is nothing I've attempted to do before.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12The judges want the amateurs' blockheads

0:20:12 > 0:20:15to be cut to the same length as the demonstration model.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17Never cut man's hair before, never.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22So, this is a first.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Why a men's cut all of a sudden?

0:20:24 > 0:20:26- Here we're on semifinal...- Yeah.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Blockhead challenge need a new technique,

0:20:29 > 0:20:30a little more difficult,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33introducing barbering technique of scissor over comb.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36- OK.- Only one blade should be moving,

0:20:36 > 0:20:39you apply it along the comb itself

0:20:39 > 0:20:43and just one blade should be moving into it.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45We could, if we wanted to,

0:20:45 > 0:20:48use a set of clippers on a one or two blade, but that's not a craft.

0:20:48 > 0:20:49That's easy.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51To use scissors over comb for a finishing

0:20:51 > 0:20:53is a proper finish on a barbered haircut,

0:20:53 > 0:20:55which gives you that lovely velvet feeling,

0:20:55 > 0:20:58you can actually feel every hair concertina-ing all the way up.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59Oh, yes. Nice.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03So, this is like an art form. Any idiot can use the clippers, yes?

0:21:03 > 0:21:05- But this is art.- Absolutely.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08The semifinal - that's going to definitely define

0:21:08 > 0:21:10who can and cannot do it.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12So, what are you looking for out there?

0:21:12 > 0:21:15So, the important thing with this shape is this square line -

0:21:15 > 0:21:17you get this lovely square shape.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18It's a great challenge.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22The stylists have been given a sectioning map

0:21:22 > 0:21:23to guide them through the cut.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26I'm literally following the sectioning map...

0:21:26 > 0:21:28to the letter.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30For beginners attempting the short back and sides,

0:21:30 > 0:21:33they must first create a horseshoe shaped section

0:21:33 > 0:21:34around the top of the head.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37- Concentration, Kobi.- Yes, definitely!

0:21:37 > 0:21:40- Now, have you cut this hairstyle before?- Never.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Never. What do you think about the sectioning map? Is that helping you?

0:21:43 > 0:21:45Um, I've just literally looked at the first step

0:21:45 > 0:21:47- and got that section done. - Uh-huh.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50I can see you've got a nice horseshoe step there.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53The next step is to remove the length from the hair

0:21:53 > 0:21:56below the horseshoe section.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00I'm just using my finger as a length guide...to cut.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06Not even sure if I'm doing it the right way, but I'm doing it anyway.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Once the length has been taken off the sides,

0:22:10 > 0:22:12the stylists should move onto cutting the hair

0:22:12 > 0:22:16on the top of the head using a technique called square layering.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Square layering is literally pulling the hair up 90 degrees

0:22:19 > 0:22:22very tight and completely straight.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23Like a flattopper.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25There was a thing called the flattopper.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31How are you getting on?

0:22:31 > 0:22:32Done the basic shape?

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Yeah, I've took all the weight off, I've got me...

0:22:35 > 0:22:37I've done me top, lined all that up straight, and everything,

0:22:37 > 0:22:39and I've just took the weight off.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41I understand. And your timing? You're doing OK?

0:22:41 > 0:22:43- I've no idea.- Right.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Right, well, keep on going.

0:22:45 > 0:22:4730 minutes remain.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55Are you heading in a pink cheek direction?

0:22:55 > 0:22:56Yes, very, very close.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59- You're starting to get a bit flustered.- Very, very close.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01You need to start believing, Kobi.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03- All right, I'll leave you to it. - Thank you.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Don't panic, loose.

0:23:05 > 0:23:06Think "relaxed."

0:23:13 > 0:23:17Once the stylists are happy that all of the hair on the top of the head

0:23:17 > 0:23:19has been cut to the same length,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21they should then finesse the sides and back.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25Once you can't reach between your fingers any more

0:23:25 > 0:23:27and it has to be shorter,

0:23:27 > 0:23:29you work with the scissors over comb technique.

0:23:29 > 0:23:34You just have to work higher, higher, higher and repeat.

0:23:34 > 0:23:35Higher, higher...

0:23:35 > 0:23:39It's moving very slowly, many, many times with the blade.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52I have never, ever, ever done scissors over comb.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57I'm trying to get the scissors over comb levelled,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59cos you could take chunks out of it by accident.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12I feel like it's a little bit like cutting the bush.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15I still think that should be shorter.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20I will get there.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22"That is absolutely awful."

0:24:22 > 0:24:24Thanks.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26No, not the haircut - I was doing a Simon Cowell impression.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29- Looks a little bit like him. - It DOES look like him, a bit.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31- Is that what you're going for? - Must be the eyes.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37Dominika's got a Simon Cowell thing going on over there.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Do you know who this reminds me of?

0:24:39 > 0:24:40- Who?- Deirdre Barlow.

0:24:40 > 0:24:41Oh, my gosh!

0:24:46 > 0:24:49The final and most difficult step of this haircut

0:24:49 > 0:24:52is connecting the short sides with the longer top.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56One of the little problem areas with this hair cut

0:24:56 > 0:25:00is the joining between the sides to the flat top.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04What happens when people lose a haircut

0:25:04 > 0:25:07is they start to try and join this in and round it off.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12I think I need to round the sides, I'm trying to blend it nicely,

0:25:12 > 0:25:14so it's like...

0:25:15 > 0:25:17So, the longer layer with the shorter one.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Pretty much guessed how to do the sides.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31I don't want to take them too short.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36I guess now that it's not the same sort of look.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Ten minutes, guys. Ten minutes left.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47It's not as hard as I thought it would be.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52So, I'm quite happy with myself.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56I feel like it looks close to the model.

0:25:59 > 0:26:00It's fine.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02It's just too long, which is making those bits too long.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04If that was slightly shorter...

0:26:04 > 0:26:06the back'd look better.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08I haven't got time to go back through it, have I?

0:26:08 > 0:26:10- How are you getting on? - That's the thing -

0:26:10 > 0:26:13- I don't know where it's gone wrong. - It looks a lot longer.- Yeah.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15How thick are your fingers?

0:26:17 > 0:26:18Normal.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20I don't know!

0:26:20 > 0:26:22I just don't know. I...

0:26:23 > 0:26:24Two minutes left!

0:26:24 > 0:26:26I'm stuck.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Could you flatten it down with a little bit of product, maybe?

0:26:29 > 0:26:30- Stick it down.- Yeah.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33But then it's only hiding what's there.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Too long!

0:26:46 > 0:26:48And that's time.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53The blockhead challenge in the semifinals is over.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57Step away from the blockheads. Thank you, guys.

0:26:57 > 0:26:58The judges are looking for a cut

0:26:58 > 0:27:01which is shorter than the width of the fingers,

0:27:01 > 0:27:05has a square top, no lumps or bumps and a smooth, velvety finish.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Here come the judges.

0:27:08 > 0:27:09Kobi.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16We'll check first how square the shape is.

0:27:16 > 0:27:18You can see it's bending down.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22- OK.- It's gone round.- So the top isn't square, you're saying.

0:27:22 > 0:27:23Absolutely not.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25- Where it feels a little bit bushy, through here...- Mm.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29So, when you were doing your scissors over comb to clean your shape up,

0:27:29 > 0:27:33you've not got in there just to give that lovely velvet feeling.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35You left it quite long, yeah?

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Would you say it's a recurring thing,

0:27:37 > 0:27:42where Kobi cuts his initial cut too long?

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Yeah, I think he's a little shy.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46Overall, this haircut is a little too long.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49- Not square enough. - Call it chop anxiety.

0:27:49 > 0:27:50Let's go see Marvin.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58- WHISTLES:- No chop anxiety down here.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00No.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02So, it's short back and sides.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04SHORT short back and sides!

0:28:04 > 0:28:06Short short back and sides!

0:28:06 > 0:28:07With a round top!

0:28:07 > 0:28:09You've gone quite a bit shorter.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11Too much contrast between really short

0:28:11 > 0:28:13where you've cut on the sides, and the top.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17If you look here, you'll actually see that corner's missing...

0:28:17 > 0:28:21from the haircut. So, when you've come up with your scissors over comb,

0:28:21 > 0:28:24- you've gone in, like this - the comb's followed the head in.- Yeah.

0:28:24 > 0:28:28Instead of feeling a kind of velvet, I'm almost getting Velcro.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31- Does that make sense?- Yeah.- So, it's just a wee bit...- I understand.

0:28:31 > 0:28:32It's a little bit shorter.

0:28:32 > 0:28:36- Once again, not quite the cut we were looking for.- No.

0:28:39 > 0:28:40All right.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47- The top feels a little long, to tell you the truth.- Yeah.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Shame you haven't got shorter.

0:28:49 > 0:28:53Still, the shape is the closest we've seen, right now.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56- And the top is flat. - And the top is flat.- Yeah.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58Beautiful.

0:28:58 > 0:28:59Ooh, velvet!

0:28:59 > 0:29:00What does that tell us?

0:29:00 > 0:29:02It says that the scissors over comb

0:29:02 > 0:29:04have actually finished off very nicely.

0:29:04 > 0:29:08- Overall...- Flat top, velvet finish... - Yeah.- ..jackpot.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10- You must be happy with that.- Yeah. - You seem quite chilled,

0:29:10 > 0:29:13- but you're dancing on the inside, aren't you?- I am, yeah.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Yeah! What has Dominika been up to?

0:29:24 > 0:29:26Too long. Way too long.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29You would have nailed it if you had cut about that length, more or less.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33If you were sticking the hair up itself, using some gel or

0:29:33 > 0:29:36something, you would see that the shape is round on the top.

0:29:36 > 0:29:37Feels good.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Your scissors over comb, it feels velvety.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41If it feels lovely, does that mean it's a good cut,

0:29:41 > 0:29:43or have you just got a velvet fetish?

0:29:43 > 0:29:45No, I've not got a velvet fetish.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Her scissors over comb this way has been - as you can see -

0:29:48 > 0:29:49look, nice and even.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52But then what's happened is she's followed the head shape

0:29:52 > 0:29:54- and it's gone too round. - Lesson learned.

0:29:54 > 0:29:56- Thank you, Dominika.- Thank you.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00You all know what happens now,

0:30:00 > 0:30:03the judges will rank you in the blockhead challenge.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05I recommend you seek refuge in the prep room.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08You might want to put ice on your burning ears.

0:30:08 > 0:30:09Take a 5.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11Thanks, guys. Great work.

0:30:19 > 0:30:20- KOBI:- This is an important round,

0:30:20 > 0:30:24it's the semifinal and this will all depend on what model I get

0:30:24 > 0:30:29for tomorrow, so it could ruin my chances for tomorrow.

0:30:29 > 0:30:34Let's face it, it's too long and too round.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37- Little bit looking like the hulk from the back.- Yeah.

0:30:37 > 0:30:41- MARVIN:- The comment of the hair being like Velcro - I suppose it was true,

0:30:41 > 0:30:46but for it being my first time, I think I done pretty good.

0:30:46 > 0:30:47I think he made a mistake,

0:30:47 > 0:30:49- and he had to cut it shorter and shorter and shorter.- Yeah.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52Eventually rounded it off too much.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54Hopefully, if I've done well on this one

0:30:54 > 0:30:55it's kind of evened me up a little bit.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57And I just have to smash it tomorrow.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00Just feels a little long, that's the only problem.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03Wish she would have cut it, like, an inch shorter.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07If I come fourth I'm going to be very angry with myself.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10- Hey, guys.- Hi!

0:31:10 > 0:31:15The judges have made four tough decisions

0:31:15 > 0:31:19in the blockhead round, and they are as follows.

0:31:20 > 0:31:26In fourth - slash last - place this week is...

0:31:31 > 0:31:32..Kobi.

0:31:33 > 0:31:34Bronze this week...

0:31:36 > 0:31:37..that's going to be...

0:31:39 > 0:31:41..Marvin.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43The person who's in second place this week

0:31:43 > 0:31:45in the blockhead challenge is...

0:31:46 > 0:31:48..Dominika.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52Which means Katie is first in the blockhead challenge.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54Congratulations!

0:31:54 > 0:31:55Thanks.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57- Happy with that?- Yeah. - You've got to be.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00Let's repair to the board, shall we? Join me, guys.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03All right. Here's the board.

0:32:03 > 0:32:07Although all of the hair provided by the judges is long,

0:32:07 > 0:32:09the length of the layers differ, textures vary

0:32:09 > 0:32:11and some are colour treated.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13I can reveal at this point,

0:32:13 > 0:32:16the theme of the freestyle challenge this week is...

0:32:17 > 0:32:19..brides.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22Katie, type A, B, C or D.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26What's doing it for you, keeping in mind that brides is the theme?

0:32:26 > 0:32:30- We've been spoilt this week.- Mm. - All right. Er...

0:32:30 > 0:32:33- I'll just go with that one. - Going with blondie.- Yeah.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34OK.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Long, wavy blonde hair.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Which is good. It will work.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45That's the redheaded lady, yes?

0:32:47 > 0:32:49SHE SQUEALS

0:32:49 > 0:32:51Very interesting, really looking forward to it.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55- She's all yours.- Thank you. - Have a good night. See you tomorrow.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02She has long, light brown hair, so, yeah, I'm very happy with my choice.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04And then there was one.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07How are you feeling about type A?

0:33:07 > 0:33:10- Are you OK?- Going to have to be.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13- Cool.- See you tomorrow.- Bye!

0:33:13 > 0:33:17I did have my eye on Dominika's choice

0:33:17 > 0:33:20of the coppery coloured natural hair,

0:33:20 > 0:33:22so I am a bit worried about it.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24It's quite heavy, but it's long, still,

0:33:24 > 0:33:28so hopefully I can still do what I planned.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Well, it's the big one, it's the freestyle round,

0:33:39 > 0:33:42and the theme is Brides.

0:33:42 > 0:33:43At the end of today,

0:33:43 > 0:33:46three people will walk down the aisle to the final

0:33:46 > 0:33:48and one will be going home.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50It's not going to be pretty.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54Who, yesterday, excelled, who is teetering on the edge?

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Let's face it, Dominika is standing out of the rest.

0:33:57 > 0:33:58She's killing it.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01I would say that Dominika's really strong to be in the final.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04- There's three that are in a weak position...- Katie, Kobi, Marvin.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06- Absolutely. - They've got to really deliver today.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10Marvin's never been on the top of this challenge.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13- Never won a freestyle round. - So, he's really got to make it.

0:34:13 > 0:34:17Kobi, let's face it, didn't do too well on the first two sessions,

0:34:17 > 0:34:19so he's really got to pick up.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22And Katie, well, she always has great ideas,

0:34:22 > 0:34:25but sometimes it's not very well executed.

0:34:25 > 0:34:26What do you think, Denise?

0:34:26 > 0:34:29I feel nervous for them all, actually.

0:34:29 > 0:34:30Good morning. How are you doing?

0:34:30 > 0:34:32OK...

0:34:32 > 0:34:36I trust you all slept well, because today is the big one.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42As you know, the theme of the freestyle challenge is brides,

0:34:42 > 0:34:45but the judges don't want to see any old brides.

0:34:45 > 0:34:49We want to see immaculate, beautiful, secure hair.

0:34:49 > 0:34:53Don't forget - any bride, it's the most important day in their life.

0:34:53 > 0:34:57We want to be blown away. This is your last chance.

0:34:57 > 0:34:58Thank you, judges.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00Great job terrifying our contestants.

0:35:00 > 0:35:04You need to throw everything into this freestyle challenge.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07Two and a half hours, three places in the grand final.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10This is it, people. Time starts now. Off you go.

0:35:10 > 0:35:11Good luck.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17- How are you? - I'm well, thank you. How are you?

0:35:17 > 0:35:18OK.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23Right, I'm just going to blast your hair dry for now.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26Just going to ask you to put your head in between your legs.

0:35:26 > 0:35:27- Upside down.- OK.

0:35:29 > 0:35:33The stylists can use anything available in the prep room

0:35:33 > 0:35:35to achieve the look they're going for,

0:35:35 > 0:35:38and this week the judges have also provided

0:35:38 > 0:35:40a selection of bridal accessories.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43I felt like I was going to pass out in the other room.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46I can't take this pressure no more!

0:35:46 > 0:35:51What are they going to have to do today to set your world aflame?

0:35:51 > 0:35:53This is my world - braids. I love them.

0:35:53 > 0:35:54We want stunning hair.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57And also, the really important thing about a bride

0:35:57 > 0:35:58is what happens at the back,

0:35:58 > 0:36:01because that's where, you know, everyone looks -

0:36:01 > 0:36:03at the back of a bride as she walks up the aisle.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07Now, wait a second - you're talking about the Dynasty wedding.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10- I want to see freaky stuff. - You'll see freaky stuff, too.

0:36:10 > 0:36:11But beautifully done.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13What about yourself, Alain?

0:36:13 > 0:36:16Yeah, I really believe that if you have inventive ideas,

0:36:16 > 0:36:19even pushing it, you know, being a little brave

0:36:19 > 0:36:23into the normality of what you can do, making a theme out of it -

0:36:23 > 0:36:25but eventually, it's how to make it cool

0:36:25 > 0:36:27- and how to make it beautiful.- Mm.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34So, what is the style, then?

0:36:34 > 0:36:36The style I'm going for is my take

0:36:36 > 0:36:38on a classic Victorianesque hairstyle.

0:36:38 > 0:36:42It's going to have quite a big quiff, quite textured.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45I'm going to make some roses out of hair extensions as well.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47- That sounds exciting.- Yes.

0:36:47 > 0:36:48- You're curling right now.- Yes.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52I want to make sure that the curls are all evenly the same tightness.

0:36:52 > 0:36:56- Uh-huh.- And then, hopefully, they will keep the hold.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00Kobi learned in the last few weeks that his curls have dropped,

0:37:00 > 0:37:02so this time he's going to make them really tight.

0:37:02 > 0:37:06The only thing that concerns me a little bit, that hairline's very low.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08When you're doing hair for a bride,

0:37:08 > 0:37:11you've really got to think about their face shape,

0:37:11 > 0:37:15their hairline, everything, because it's hair, but it's beauty as well.

0:37:15 > 0:37:17I feel he should have done a little bit more work

0:37:17 > 0:37:20on that hairline immediately,

0:37:20 > 0:37:24and really thought that out before he started going in with his curls.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26Semifinal. What are you going to do?

0:37:26 > 0:37:32I'm going to do a spin on a classic wedding hairstyle.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34- It being half up, half down. - Half up, half down.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37I'm just going to accentuate everything.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39I'm going to make my bun resemble, like a chain,

0:37:39 > 0:37:42kind of similar to the chain I have on.

0:37:42 > 0:37:47- Wow.- And I'm going to extend the back, like super long.- Right.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49What kind of accessories do you have in mind?

0:37:49 > 0:37:53- I'm going to use some net curtain for a veil...- Sounds great.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55- This is a beautiful colour here, isn't it?- Oh, I love it!

0:37:55 > 0:37:58Absolutely stunning. And what do you call this colour?

0:37:58 > 0:38:00Um... Just ginger, I think!

0:38:00 > 0:38:02- Really?- Yeah! Don't shy away from it.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04- It's called Titian.- Oh! - That's its real colour.

0:38:04 > 0:38:06So, what's the style?

0:38:06 > 0:38:09The plan is to have on the front victory rolls

0:38:09 > 0:38:12which are going to go in the shape of hearts,

0:38:12 > 0:38:16and then go through nice, big waves to the sides,

0:38:16 > 0:38:19and I will put a skull, as well.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21- A skull?- Yeah.- So she's a real Goth.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25She's Goth, and it's going to be "till the death do us part."

0:38:25 > 0:38:28- Till the death do us part! - Just a gentle remainder, you know?!

0:38:28 > 0:38:29Remember.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36So, tell us, what's the plan?

0:38:36 > 0:38:40- I am trying to create a birdcage. - Wow!

0:38:40 > 0:38:43I'm going for catwalk type of couture wedding.

0:38:43 > 0:38:45Have you everything ready, or you got to build everything?

0:38:45 > 0:38:47- Well, I've got to build the cage. - Wow!

0:38:47 > 0:38:49- Good fun.- Yeah. - I've got to be quick.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51- This is your forte, you like building things.- Yeah, I do.

0:38:51 > 0:38:55In fact, I have seen this technique before...

0:38:55 > 0:38:56You're braiding it to...

0:38:56 > 0:39:00It's just to hold the structure and it gives me a base to pin into.

0:39:00 > 0:39:01Right.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04- You're confident? - I'm a bit worried about me timing.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06I am going to be running round a little bit.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08Really looking forward to see what you come up with.

0:39:09 > 0:39:13Alain and Denise have allowed plaits and braids in this challenge...

0:39:13 > 0:39:15I'm literally going to leave you for about an hour now.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17Back in a minute!

0:39:17 > 0:39:21..but have asked that they are not on show in the finished hairstyle.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25I've just made a doughnut bun real quick,

0:39:25 > 0:39:27just to go on top of her head.

0:39:28 > 0:39:33I'm just taking the hair small section by small section.

0:39:33 > 0:39:36Adding a bit of pomade just to smooth out the ends.

0:39:36 > 0:39:40And then I'm twisting up the hair...

0:39:44 > 0:39:45..and pinning it.

0:39:50 > 0:39:55Katie is using a canvas wigmaker's block to shape the wire frame

0:39:55 > 0:39:57for her couture bridal design.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01I am trying to make a birdcage.

0:40:03 > 0:40:04Very awkwardly.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08I'm hoping that all stays together now.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22Dominika wants to incorporate synthetic hair extensions

0:40:22 > 0:40:25into her "till death us do part" hairstyle.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27I'm doing clip-in extension.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30So, normally we should stitch them nicely,

0:40:30 > 0:40:32but obviously we can't afford that luxury.

0:40:34 > 0:40:35Just glue gun.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44- Marvin.- Hi, Steve.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47So not only are we trying to secure a place for you in the grand final,

0:40:47 > 0:40:51we're trying to secure your first win in the freestyle round.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53- Yeah.- I can see a lot of this spongy thing here.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55- Are you going to cover that?- Yeah.

0:40:55 > 0:40:59Yeah, I'm going to pull it out and cover it up, and disguise it all.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03- It resembles like a chain, like jewellery, kind of.- Ooh, nice.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05- And then...- A hairy chain.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09What?! That's what you just said!

0:41:14 > 0:41:16OK, let the fun begin!

0:41:18 > 0:41:21Dominika is backcombing the hair to give it more texture

0:41:21 > 0:41:24and make it easier to roll into shape.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38I did the victory rolls, which I hope looks like a little heart.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43I might stick, like, tiny roses inside. I don't know.

0:41:43 > 0:41:47Are you as worried about this hairdo as your model looks?

0:41:48 > 0:41:52She's like, "What is going on with my hair? What's happening?"

0:41:52 > 0:41:56I need to finish making the rest of my - almost, like, flowers...

0:41:56 > 0:41:58Black flowers, cool.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01- That's my sort of accessory.- You've got some black on your chops, too.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05You had a tough day, yesterday. Is that playing on your mind?

0:42:05 > 0:42:07Yeah, it is. An awful lot.

0:42:07 > 0:42:08Um...

0:42:10 > 0:42:11It's just such a knock-back from last week.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14- So it's sort of like... - Yeah, that's the game, isn't it?

0:42:14 > 0:42:15Swings and roundabouts.

0:42:15 > 0:42:18One minute you're up there, the next minute you're...

0:42:18 > 0:42:20- you're down here.- Down here.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23- I'm sure you're going to slam it, book a place in the final.- Cool.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25Didn't think this part through.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28Oh, I WILL get it off.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30Did no-one see this coming?

0:42:30 > 0:42:32Yay.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35I was about to send out a search party -

0:42:35 > 0:42:37you're hiding in the prep room again.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39Your model's been sitting on her own for like half an hour.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42You've only got about one hour left.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45That's just great, yeah(!)

0:42:45 > 0:42:47- Is that going to be enough? - I don't know.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53Got a feeling I'm not going to get it finished.

0:42:53 > 0:42:59- KOBI:- I've now moved on to actually create my style.

0:42:59 > 0:43:00Um...

0:43:00 > 0:43:03Just going to start by brushing out my curls.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07I was under pressure to make sure that my curls come out right.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09They have, I'm really, really pleased with them.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12I'm basically attaching the flowers by placing them in

0:43:12 > 0:43:15and then wrapping the own model's hair around it,

0:43:15 > 0:43:17to create the outer petals.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20And it's just going to have a pearl in the centre.

0:43:20 > 0:43:24It shouldn't look like fake hair made into roses.

0:43:24 > 0:43:26It's got to blend into the hairstyle.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34Seeing bits of green hair in there.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37The green looks amazing in the red, there, it's incredible.

0:43:37 > 0:43:40- But what are you going for?- I'm going to put some skull in her hair.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43You're going to put skulls in her hair?

0:43:43 > 0:43:45- GASPS:- That is crazy!

0:43:45 > 0:43:48You're quite a scary lady.

0:43:48 > 0:43:49And I'm proud of it!

0:43:49 > 0:43:51I can tell.

0:43:51 > 0:43:52I love it.

0:43:54 > 0:43:58I'm making long extensions out of 100% human hair.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01I'm going to blend it with the back of her hair,

0:44:01 > 0:44:03just make it look a lot longer.

0:44:03 > 0:44:06I might add a few lighter colours in it

0:44:06 > 0:44:09just to make it look a bit more natural.

0:44:13 > 0:44:17Marvin glues the hair extensions onto a long piece of netting.

0:44:17 > 0:44:19I've never actually done it this way before.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27He attaches the long extensions to his model's head

0:44:27 > 0:44:32by sewing them into a small braid using a curved weave needle.

0:44:33 > 0:44:35Unlike synthetic extensions,

0:44:35 > 0:44:38real hair extensions are easier to heat and curl.

0:44:40 > 0:44:45Dominika is featuring hair nets as part of her design.

0:44:45 > 0:44:49So, you've backcombed the hair - quite fluffy.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51It looks, basically, a mess, you know?

0:44:51 > 0:44:56And then you get the hairnet and you put the hair in.

0:44:57 > 0:45:01Secure it, like, maybe a couple of places, so the net doesn't come off...

0:45:02 > 0:45:05..with the grips, and then you just stretch it

0:45:05 > 0:45:07and you know, you mould the shape.

0:45:07 > 0:45:10- You've got half an hour left, guys. - Eek!

0:45:11 > 0:45:13With the challenge almost over,

0:45:13 > 0:45:16Katie is only just returning to her model.

0:45:25 > 0:45:26I need these to heat up.

0:45:28 > 0:45:32I'm over this. I need to sort this out.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Oh, man, you can still see the doughnut bun

0:45:34 > 0:45:36and it's getting on my nerves.

0:45:38 > 0:45:41I know, I'm totally just messing everything up.

0:45:43 > 0:45:44I'm just running out of time.

0:45:47 > 0:45:49So Marvin is feeling the pressure.

0:45:49 > 0:45:51He has struggled with finish in the past.

0:45:51 > 0:45:53This is his last chance, really,

0:45:53 > 0:45:58to prove that he can deliver what we need in the immaculate finish.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00Five minutes.

0:46:00 > 0:46:02Five minutes, everyone.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05- Looks fab to me.- Thank you.

0:46:05 > 0:46:07How does it look to you?

0:46:07 > 0:46:09I like it, yeah.

0:46:09 > 0:46:14But I don't know if it screams bridal as much as I thought it would have.

0:46:14 > 0:46:16Hmm. What are we lacking in the bridal region?

0:46:18 > 0:46:21- Veil. How long have we got? - Five minutes.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24- Well, about four and a half at this point.- I have veil fabric.

0:46:28 > 0:46:32- It's just going to be too much. - It's too much.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34You're not doing your happy face. What's going on?

0:46:34 > 0:46:38- I'm just not in the mood right now. - What's wrong?

0:46:38 > 0:46:39This looks pretty beautiful to me.

0:46:39 > 0:46:41- Are you happy?- I'm very happy.- Sold?

0:46:41 > 0:46:45If I was going to get married, I would have a hairstyle like this.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48I just feel like I'm going to go home.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55Everything is gone. One second.

0:47:03 > 0:47:05- Sorry, Steve, I'm just...- It's fine.

0:47:05 > 0:47:08Listen, there's a huge amount of pressure out there,

0:47:08 > 0:47:09of course, and I get it.

0:47:09 > 0:47:11You'll be all right, man.

0:47:14 > 0:47:17This looks way tacky as well, it just look stupid.

0:47:19 > 0:47:20It just looks so dumb.

0:47:39 > 0:47:41Thank you, guys.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44Your time's up. Step away from the bride.

0:47:45 > 0:47:49'Alain and Denise will be looking for immaculately finished designs

0:47:49 > 0:47:51'that last a whole day.'

0:47:51 > 0:47:52Here come the judges.

0:47:54 > 0:47:56Let's take a look at Dominika's work.

0:48:10 > 0:48:12- Does it say bride?- I believe so.

0:48:12 > 0:48:15Look, it's a beautiful shape.

0:48:15 > 0:48:20360, as we saw it walking, it looked really consistent.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22The proportions are quite beautiful

0:48:22 > 0:48:26and I do like the effect that you've created by using the nets

0:48:26 > 0:48:28and you have a different kind of texture.

0:48:28 > 0:48:33It's immaculate, this is beautiful, the pinwork's beautiful, it's lovely.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35Every angle... Just one little criticism.

0:48:35 > 0:48:39The blue here and here, which is very pretty in one respect close up,

0:48:39 > 0:48:42but from a distance I thought you'd left the rollers in.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44- Oh.- Yeah. Just very slightly.

0:48:44 > 0:48:48Is this meant to be a heart here? That's amazing. I just noticed that.

0:48:48 > 0:48:50- It's almost perfect. Beautiful, isn't it?- Incredible, yeah.

0:48:50 > 0:48:52That's beautifully done.

0:48:52 > 0:48:56It's superb. I love it, actually. It's definitely bold

0:48:56 > 0:48:58and avant-garde and exciting.

0:48:58 > 0:49:02Bold, avant-garde, exciting. That's our Dominika for you.

0:49:02 > 0:49:04- Yeah.- Exactly.- Amazing, thank you.

0:49:06 > 0:49:07This is Kobi's bride.

0:49:23 > 0:49:26Does it say bridal?

0:49:26 > 0:49:27I think so.

0:49:27 > 0:49:31It's fairly bold because you brought the height

0:49:31 > 0:49:33and the texture within it.

0:49:33 > 0:49:37These two sides which stick out, again it would have been prettier

0:49:37 > 0:49:40to make them a little bit closer to the head.

0:49:40 > 0:49:45Do you mean how well the hairdo suits the shape of the model's face?

0:49:45 > 0:49:46Eventually, yes.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49Proportions, I agree with Alain.

0:49:49 > 0:49:52You didn't look enough at your bride in the mirror.

0:49:52 > 0:49:56You really didn't, you stayed focused here so much

0:49:56 > 0:49:59and you didn't actually look here because I'd like to just do something

0:49:59 > 0:50:04because the minute you do that, she's beautiful and she's a bride.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07I think that there was an element of

0:50:07 > 0:50:10- getting to understand this type of hairline.- Yeah.

0:50:10 > 0:50:12You used the model's own hair, now, for the roses here.

0:50:12 > 0:50:16- Some are extensions and some are the model.- Some are extensions?

0:50:16 > 0:50:19- So he fooled you, Denise.- Fabulous. That's superb.- Thank you.

0:50:19 > 0:50:22- And even on this side, you've done it so well.- Look how close Denise is.

0:50:22 > 0:50:24She's touching it and she can't tell!

0:50:24 > 0:50:27One thing I just see that you had the veil, the tulle,

0:50:27 > 0:50:29- and you didn't use it.- No.

0:50:29 > 0:50:33Very easily you can create beautiful little type of flowers

0:50:33 > 0:50:36and you place it in the right area, even on the side.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39- It's a good effect, you understand what we mean.- Yeah.- OK.

0:50:39 > 0:50:41What's Katie been up to?

0:51:04 > 0:51:07This is what I call bold and brave.

0:51:07 > 0:51:08You really took it on.

0:51:08 > 0:51:11I really like the incorporation of the hair into it.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14It looks really good 360 degrees.

0:51:14 > 0:51:17Love the veil, love the accessories.

0:51:17 > 0:51:21- I think it's pretty close, isn't it? - It's very, very secure.

0:51:21 > 0:51:25It's beautifully made. If she walked up an aisle, you can see through it.

0:51:25 > 0:51:27But while I'm looking through it,

0:51:27 > 0:51:30that does look like a lot of plaiting

0:51:30 > 0:51:32and we did say no plaiting.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34I love how this style says,

0:51:34 > 0:51:37"When you marry me, you'll be in a cage forever."

0:51:39 > 0:51:41What's Marvin been up to?

0:51:55 > 0:51:57Solid as a flipping rock.

0:51:58 > 0:52:01Does it say bridal, though? That's the question.

0:52:01 > 0:52:06I believe so. You've got your chain effect pretty well,

0:52:06 > 0:52:08covered it well enough but you can still see it.

0:52:08 > 0:52:12Would have been easy enough to put just a little layer of hair

0:52:12 > 0:52:15on the top of the bun and then work from that.

0:52:15 > 0:52:19Your pinwork's very neat and this is totally in proportion.

0:52:19 > 0:52:20She looks gorgeous.

0:52:20 > 0:52:25The extensions - it's beautiful, the way that's the model's real hair.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28I didn't even know if these were extensions. That's incredible.

0:52:28 > 0:52:31Brilliant extensions. They're lovely and tight and I can't pull them out.

0:52:31 > 0:52:35- My only disappointing area is this seam at the back.- Yeah.

0:52:35 > 0:52:39- I'm a little bit disappointed with this.- That line?

0:52:39 > 0:52:42- I think it looks quite nice. What's wrong with that?- No.

0:52:42 > 0:52:44If you're in the back of a church looking up,

0:52:44 > 0:52:45you'll just see that line.

0:52:45 > 0:52:49Even if we'd done something to disguise, or you'd used that veil.

0:52:49 > 0:52:50Thank you.

0:52:53 > 0:52:57Thank you so much, guys. Once again, very, very good work.

0:52:57 > 0:53:02The judges will now decide on a winner of the freestyle challenge.

0:53:02 > 0:53:05And then they will attempt mission impossible

0:53:05 > 0:53:08and that's choosing the person who will be leaving us today.

0:53:08 > 0:53:12Go take a well-deserved break. Thank you very much, guys.

0:53:16 > 0:53:17- Feel it?- Yeah.

0:53:22 > 0:53:24I think with all the pressure

0:53:24 > 0:53:28and the stress of it being the semifinals,

0:53:28 > 0:53:32I think it just got to me. It really just got to me at that one point.

0:53:32 > 0:53:34'I'm not ready to go home.'

0:53:35 > 0:53:38I am really quite nervous this week, more than ever.

0:53:38 > 0:53:41'I wasn't as strong as I set out to be.

0:53:41 > 0:53:43'It would really upset me if this week was my last week.

0:53:43 > 0:53:45'It means so much to me to stay'

0:53:45 > 0:53:46and make it into the final.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50I'd be gutted if I was going home.

0:53:50 > 0:53:52Everyone wants to be in the final now.

0:53:52 > 0:53:55In deciding who's going to leave us today

0:53:55 > 0:53:58we're taking into account all three of the rounds

0:53:58 > 0:54:01over the last two days. Who is looking not so safe?

0:54:01 > 0:54:05So, Kobi and Marvin, they really are two,

0:54:05 > 0:54:08that didn't give their 100% we were asking for.

0:54:08 > 0:54:10It was just a weak round for both of them

0:54:10 > 0:54:13and Marvin was really strong on the mohawk

0:54:13 > 0:54:15and Kobi was quite weak on that,

0:54:15 > 0:54:16but then on the other hand, Katie,

0:54:16 > 0:54:20her mohican just didn't reach the criteria at all.

0:54:20 > 0:54:22We're going into the finals now. It's really exciting

0:54:22 > 0:54:24and you've watched everybody grow,

0:54:24 > 0:54:27so it's going to be... going to be tough.

0:54:27 > 0:54:29Go for it. I'll see you in a bit. Good luck.

0:54:31 > 0:54:34We can't really judge on the taste of the hairstyle,

0:54:34 > 0:54:37we just want to see, technically, how well it's achieved.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39Kobi's could have walked down an aisle,

0:54:39 > 0:54:42- into any registrar office. It could have been a bride.- Absolutely.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45Marvin's was stylish and modern but as it walked down the aisle,

0:54:45 > 0:54:47- it would look unfinished.- Absolutely.

0:54:47 > 0:54:51He needs a lot more work in his finish and he hasn't delivered that.

0:54:51 > 0:54:53Katie had the braiding, something we have to think about,

0:54:53 > 0:54:55which they were told not to do.

0:54:59 > 0:55:01Katie, Kobi, Marvin, Dominika...

0:55:03 > 0:55:06..your work has been outstanding.

0:55:06 > 0:55:07As you know, though,

0:55:07 > 0:55:10only one of you can actually win the freestyle challenge.

0:55:12 > 0:55:16And the judges believe that person, this week, to be...

0:55:23 > 0:55:25..Dominika.

0:55:25 > 0:55:26- Congratulations.- Thank you.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30Nicely done, again.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33Fabulous, fabulous work. You've all done fabulous work,

0:55:33 > 0:55:36which makes this next part especially difficult

0:55:36 > 0:55:39because we can only take three people into the grand final.

0:55:39 > 0:55:41So with that in mind,

0:55:41 > 0:55:45the person, unfortunately, who will be leaving us today is...

0:55:52 > 0:55:53..Kobi.

0:55:55 > 0:55:58- So sorry.- Well done, mate. OK?

0:55:58 > 0:56:01'Sending Kobi home today was a really, really tough decision'

0:56:01 > 0:56:06because he's grown in this competition unbelievably.

0:56:06 > 0:56:11'But overall this last two days, he's been weak in all three rounds'

0:56:11 > 0:56:15and it just, you know, people were better than him, in a sense.

0:56:15 > 0:56:18Kobi is a really passionate 16-year-old.

0:56:18 > 0:56:21At the end of the day, getting to the semifinal of this competition

0:56:21 > 0:56:25is exceptional. He should win an award just for that.

0:56:25 > 0:56:27'I actually couldn't believe it.'

0:56:27 > 0:56:29I can't really explain how happy

0:56:29 > 0:56:33and like, the feelings that's going on around my head now, but...

0:56:35 > 0:56:38I am, I'm very happy and I'm very proud of myself.

0:56:40 > 0:56:42'It is a nice feeling to get to the final,

0:56:42 > 0:56:44'but it's kind of overshadowed by someone leaving'

0:56:44 > 0:56:48so I think it will be more, on my way home I'll think, "Oh. I'm in the final!"

0:56:48 > 0:56:52It feels so comforting knowing that the judges had faith in me

0:56:52 > 0:56:54and to know that I got this far is still good,

0:56:54 > 0:56:57so this is completely not the end for me.

0:56:58 > 0:57:00It's just the beginning.

0:57:01 > 0:57:03Next time on Hair...

0:57:03 > 0:57:05This week, the victory roll.

0:57:05 > 0:57:07I'm just going to keep it real, cos this is the final.

0:57:07 > 0:57:09- Beautifully made.- Wonderful. - I really like it.

0:57:09 > 0:57:12- Bring on the hair!- Oh, no...

0:57:14 > 0:57:16The theme is Hollywood glamour.

0:57:16 > 0:57:17I cut too much hair.

0:57:17 > 0:57:19- Tight one, isn't it?- It's very.

0:57:19 > 0:57:22The winner of Hair 2014 is...
