0:00:02 > 0:00:03Welcome to Hair. It's the grand final.

0:00:03 > 0:00:07We started with eight stylists and now we're down to our final three.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Over the past five weeks, the competition has been fierce.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15- Are you not happy with this? - It's not what I wanted.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19The amateurs have had to cut and style to the limits of their ability

0:00:19 > 0:00:20to stay in the running.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Got a feeling I'm not going to get it finished.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Now there's just three. Dominika.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27It could headline a major fashion show.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30Marvin.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33I absolutely love what you've done with the hairline.

0:00:33 > 0:00:34And Katie.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38It's the best Mad Hatter made out of hair I've ever seen.

0:00:38 > 0:00:39They've shone the brightest

0:00:39 > 0:00:42and secured themselves a place in the final.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45My strategy would be keeping an eye on them and seeing

0:00:45 > 0:00:47what they're doing, and just beat them.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51This time, the judges, royal hairdresser Denise McAdam

0:00:51 > 0:00:53and celebrity stylist Alain Pichon,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56are setting their toughest challenges yet.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58- Are your hands shaking?- Yeah!

0:00:58 > 0:01:00A vintage wartime favourite

0:01:00 > 0:01:03and the most difficult haircut of all.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05No idea what I'm doing!

0:01:05 > 0:01:08And there's a rather special surprise for our stylists

0:01:08 > 0:01:09in the final freestyle round.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Oh, no!

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Three people remain but there can be only one winner.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Who will it be?

0:01:18 > 0:01:20It's time to find out. Let's go to work on Hair.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34Good morning!

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Welcome to the grand final.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Hoo-hoo! Huge congratulations for making it this far.

0:01:41 > 0:01:46Of course, the question is - which one of you can win this thing?

0:01:46 > 0:01:50As always, in the first round, the judges want to see you

0:01:50 > 0:01:53incorporate a set element into your hairstyles.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57This week, the vintage classic, the victory roll.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00The judges want to see two victory rolls.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01What else do they need to know?

0:02:01 > 0:02:04The victory rolls must be clearly defined,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07not baggy and hanging at the sides, just strong and secure

0:02:07 > 0:02:11and, of course, no pins and grips on show.

0:02:11 > 0:02:12This is a glamorous look

0:02:12 > 0:02:17so make sure it's an extremely clean and sharp finish.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21Also, we want to see the shine all the way down each roll.

0:02:21 > 0:02:26Your models await. There is one hour and 30 minutes on the clock.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27It begins. Get to it.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Good luck, guys!

0:02:32 > 0:02:34LAUGHTER

0:02:34 > 0:02:35Hi!

0:02:35 > 0:02:36Good luck!

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Thank you very much.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43In this challenge, the stylists have each chosen a model

0:02:43 > 0:02:45with the hair type they want to work with.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48RIP to the curl in the back of your head, boy!

0:02:48 > 0:02:51That blow-dryer just knocked it out real fast!

0:02:51 > 0:02:54- Have they told you I'm cutting your fringe?- Yeah.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Don't worry!

0:02:56 > 0:02:57SHE LAUGHS

0:02:57 > 0:02:59I think I'm going to go for,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02like, in the middle, two big victory rolls.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03Symmetrical.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07So what is a victory roll?

0:03:07 > 0:03:10It's an iconic vintage hairstyle with rolls at the front

0:03:10 > 0:03:13which became famous during the War.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16As the fighter pilots came back from missions, they would do a roll.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18The two went together. The victory roll.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Why is the victory roll a suitable challenge for the grand final?

0:03:22 > 0:03:26This is a classic technique, how to shape a roll itself.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30You have to use drawn-back combing, get a nice sculpture of the roll.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Just think of that line of shine that you create.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Talk me through that. What does that mean?

0:03:35 > 0:03:37It's how someone finishes the hair.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39You get a lovely, sharp reflection.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43The hair's lovely and clean and it goes round like a cylinder.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47The line of shine can only happen when you really smooth the hair,

0:03:47 > 0:03:48like silk, and make sure each hair,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51with the tail of the comb, is in place,

0:03:51 > 0:03:55and that's going to make a true reflection to create line.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07I picked chemically relaxed African hair for my victory rolls.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09For the last couple of challenges

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I stepped out of the box with European hair, mostly.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14I'm just going to keep it real, cos this is the final.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18I stuck with what I knew. Hopefully it can help me win!

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Marvin's been doing hair from the age of 12.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26He used to practise on his sister

0:04:26 > 0:04:29because I used to give his sister a bad hair day.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31My mum used to give me doo-doo plaits!

0:04:31 > 0:04:35No, seriously! Two big doo-doo cane rows and... No.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38He done mine and my friends' hair

0:04:38 > 0:04:40and from there it just picked off.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42My guinea pig!

0:04:42 > 0:04:43He knows he's good

0:04:43 > 0:04:46but I don't think he knows how good he actually is.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52Marvin's come in the top three of every single blockhead round.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Look at that, it's pretty perfect.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59But despite producing amazing creations in the freestyle round...

0:04:59 > 0:05:01I definitely feel I'm in the 1920s.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04..he's always been pipped at the post.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08My main criticism I have always been getting is just my finishing.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Not refined as much as we would like to see, you know?

0:05:11 > 0:05:12Their feedback was definitely useful.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16It's my finishing I'm really going to work on for the final.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20Marvin's going for two large symmetrical victory rolls

0:05:20 > 0:05:23on the top of the head, with the rest of the hair down and curled.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27So right now you are straightening it?

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Yeah, it's a little bit easier to work with

0:05:30 > 0:05:33if I straighten out the individual strands

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- and I just use the straighteners to smooth it out a bit.- OK.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Marvin made his choice because he's used to working

0:05:40 > 0:05:42with Afro-Caribbean hair.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45He's not making himself an easy task.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Blow-dry it, straighten it and curl it after,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51there can be a lot of work to it.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Now, this is perfect, man.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56- Now smooth out them edges, boy! - Yeah!

0:05:58 > 0:06:01I wanted to do something I hadn't done before.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03I hadn't cut in this challenge so I thought I best had.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10Katie's been interested in hairdressing for a long time,

0:06:10 > 0:06:13really, since she was quite young.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15She's got a lot more confident in the last six weeks,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18- since she's been doing this competition.- Yeah.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21It's really brought her out of herself.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23- OK!- Lovely.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Mum-of-two Katie came top in two of the blockhead rounds

0:06:26 > 0:06:30and impressed the judges with some highly creative freestyle work.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34I'm speechless, to be honest, on that, it's superb.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Week by week, I've thought, "Oh, actually, yeah,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39"I'm doing quite well here, I'm getting further than I thought."

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Bold and brave, you really took it on.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45I obviously am quite good at what I do, so I think

0:06:45 > 0:06:48it'll make me go for whatever I want to go for now.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Katie is the only stylist cutting in this round,

0:06:51 > 0:06:56a short blunt fringe with one tight roll on either side of the head.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58The plan is I'm going to cut

0:06:58 > 0:07:00a short, straight fringe, blunt fringe,

0:07:00 > 0:07:03bring the victory rolls up to meet at the centre,

0:07:03 > 0:07:07and then hopefully curl it all so it's a nice, soft, like set pearl.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11And if that goes wrong, I'll be putting it up!

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Right, so you have two versions in the end, if things go wrong.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- We'll see how the curls are sitting. - We never know what could happen.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23She's flexible, like she always does, which is good to do, but

0:07:23 > 0:07:27you need to have a strong plan at this level of the competition.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32For her fringe, Katie first cuts a guide, then pulls down

0:07:32 > 0:07:36narrow sections of hair, cutting them to exactly the same length.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39She tidies up any stray hairs

0:07:39 > 0:07:42to give her a '50s-style, razor-sharp edge.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47That would have been easier without him stood there!

0:07:47 > 0:07:48SHE LAUGHS

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Victory rolls depend on face shape.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Like, sometimes it suits you, small one,

0:07:53 > 0:07:56sometimes you can do a big one, and it's about how wide they are.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Dominika moved to the UK from Poland eight years ago

0:08:01 > 0:08:04but she's still really close to her mum and sister.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08SHE SPEAKS POLISH

0:08:08 > 0:08:10LAUGHTER

0:08:10 > 0:08:13The 29-year-old photographer's assistant has been

0:08:13 > 0:08:16a strong contender throughout the competition...

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Technique was really well applied.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21I can't see turns, I can't fault it.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24..coming first or second in every single blockhead round.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26- Yeah, really good.- Really good.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29And she came top in two of the freestyle challenges.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31It could headline a major fashion show.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35But the judges would like to see a little more restraint.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Denise and Alain, they've told me to calm down a bit.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42There's a lot of flowers in there, maybe one or two too many.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44I have to master the simplicity.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50Dominika's victory rolls will sit either side of a centre parting

0:08:50 > 0:08:54with the rest of the hair down to frame the face.

0:08:54 > 0:08:55You're getting a nice, smooth finish.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58You're getting that shine that Alain is desperate to see?

0:09:00 > 0:09:01Let's please Alain!

0:09:01 > 0:09:04Let's please you with this one!

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Well, look, you're already on a winner because, you know,

0:09:07 > 0:09:08in the '40s and during the War,

0:09:08 > 0:09:10they'd have loved to have had those clips.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12- They didn't have the clips? - No, no, no.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15There was no money for metal, not for hair.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19To make victory rolls, the hair is first set into curls.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22These will then be used to form the cylinders.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24I'm going to set it in pin curls to cool,

0:09:24 > 0:09:27get it all out, then do the victory rolls!

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Katie's opted for tongs

0:09:29 > 0:09:32but Dominika is wrapping the hair around a styling wand

0:09:32 > 0:09:33to make her curls.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36I love the wand. You just wind it up

0:09:36 > 0:09:39and you don't have to worry about creased ends.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Marvin is using a different tool.

0:09:44 > 0:09:50I use the shapers for everything, really. To crimp, to curl, to wave.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53The method the stylists use to prepare the hair

0:09:53 > 0:09:57will ultimately determine how much shine they create.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59The straightener will create the shine right away.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01It's a good idea.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05The best way to use it is by using fine-ish sections,

0:10:05 > 0:10:09just two fingers maximum. One or two fingers.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11If you use it too thick, you won't catch the roots perfectly.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20I'm going to do the victory rolls, now.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25To create a great victory roll, you start shaping it by backcombing,

0:10:25 > 0:10:28to keep the consistency.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30You can roll it in-between your fingers.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Take off your fingers, rearrange the shape,

0:10:33 > 0:10:35a few pins all the way through.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Actually, you don't see them.

0:10:37 > 0:10:42And then you rearrange the front to be very even and very round.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49This one's coming along.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51The plan was to get them done earlier.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53But nothing's kind of going to plan.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55At this stage, it tends to look like a building site.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58When I go away, come back five minutes later

0:10:58 > 0:11:00and it's, you know, The Shard.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04- Is that going to happen again? - Oh, I've no idea.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07Ugh, Marvin, you get on my nerves! Jeez!

0:11:09 > 0:11:13Can't remember where I got this technique from, but thank God!

0:11:14 > 0:11:18The rolls must be tightly pinned to keep them secure

0:11:18 > 0:11:22but all pins and grips must be hidden in the finished hairstyles.

0:11:24 > 0:11:25Marvin.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28How you doing, brother? You good?

0:11:28 > 0:11:29I'm very good.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34I'm going to point it out. Are your hands shaking?

0:11:34 > 0:11:36- Yeah.- Why?

0:11:36 > 0:11:38I think I'm a bit nervous!

0:11:38 > 0:11:42I think it's just knowing in the back of my head that it's the final.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44What I'm really trying to work on is in the finishing

0:11:44 > 0:11:45and hiding the pins.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49I'm trying to play hide-and-seek with the pins this week!

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- She does love to find a pin, our Denise.- Yep.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54- Look, I'll leave you to it. - All right.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56I can see you're a bit...

0:11:56 > 0:11:57MARVIN LAUGHS

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- I'll let you get on with your hair. - Thanks, man.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Half an hour left, guys. Half an hour.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12With the rolls made, the stylists must make sure

0:12:12 > 0:12:16they achieve the line of shine that the judges are looking for.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19To get that line of shine it's about preparation.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23If you look at Dominika, she brushes and brushes until it's like silk.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27And then she knows that she's already on her way to the shine.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31I see my line of shine!

0:12:31 > 0:12:33The victory rolls are looking nice.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36It's like this hair's going to fall out now. I'll try and do it.

0:12:36 > 0:12:37Let's get these down.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42I'm brushing through the curls with a paddle brush

0:12:42 > 0:12:44because I don't really want it as curls,

0:12:44 > 0:12:48I want kind of just the movement and the waves.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51Three minutes left, guys. Three minutes left.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00I have to make sure that my finishing is somewhat immaculate.

0:13:04 > 0:13:05Thank you, guys.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09If your rolls are not victorious at this stage,

0:13:09 > 0:13:11then I am afraid it's too late.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13Time's up, here come the judges.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Let's start with Katie.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26Very cool interpretation of the shape.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Quite modern, in fact. I like the fringe definition.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Much more contemporary.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36The fringe was brave. Well done. You've done it beautifully.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38It's definitely got that cuteness. Shine's great.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40Got a nice shine coming through here.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43The pin works nice here because it's very natural.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Kind of flows in nicely.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Maybe with your waves here, I mean, the waves are nice,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51but they could've been a wee bit tighter,

0:13:51 > 0:13:53because they'll fall quite quickly.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55That would be the only insecure area.

0:13:55 > 0:13:56One thing which I've just seen now

0:13:56 > 0:13:59that your rolls are fairly short, you know?

0:13:59 > 0:14:01They could have been a little bit longer,

0:14:01 > 0:14:04as far as building up the shape into it,

0:14:04 > 0:14:08and then we could have made even more of a statement.

0:14:09 > 0:14:10Let's go see Dominika.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22The classic victory rolls.

0:14:23 > 0:14:24Beautifully made.

0:14:24 > 0:14:29I love the profile, how it builds up and really gets a nice height.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33And it suits your model really beautifully.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35- Looks fabulous.- Thank you.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37And you definitely have got a fantastic shine,

0:14:37 > 0:14:39especially blonde hair, because blonde hair

0:14:39 > 0:14:42sometimes doesn't get as sharp a reflection.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45She worked it beautifully and enhanced the shine.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48Very slightly off-centre, kind of want to pull that side in,

0:14:48 > 0:14:52just a little bit, it just goes a wee bit baggy, just there.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55- Great stuff.- Thank you, Dominika. - Thank you.

0:15:09 > 0:15:14Well, this is a great interpretation of the victory roll.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Proportions are pretty good.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19Love the shine, you've treated it really well

0:15:19 > 0:15:22and, being dark, it comes out really well.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24- Very shiny.- Thank you.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- I have to say, well done in how you've handled that hair.- Thank you.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's shiny way over there, it's shiny here, it's wonderful.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- And it's definitely very secure. - Thank you.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Couple of little pins in there.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37A little one hiding itself.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41I mean, we can't see it here and we can't see it here,

0:15:41 > 0:15:43but we can definitely see it here.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45These guys are going to be difficult to separate.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47- Very difficult!- Thank you.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54Well, that's the first round of the grand final over and done with

0:15:54 > 0:15:56and the good news is, you were brilliant.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Help yourself to tea and biccies, guys. Well done.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Goodness me, that was very impressive.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04I enjoyed that. That was really good.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10I think we've all picked up our game now. Like, we mean business.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Clearly the right three people are in the final.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Oh, 100%. I feel quite proud, actually.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17I can't see anyone completely stronger at this stage.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19The standard is high now.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22We're in the final, so no surprise, really. It's high.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25And it's going to get harder and harder.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28I'm trying to think which one we're going to choose

0:16:28 > 0:16:30because right now, it's impossible.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32I think with the next two challenges,

0:16:32 > 0:16:37that's when it's going to start getting real tough.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41Next up, it's the blockhead round,

0:16:41 > 0:16:45which is all about precision cutting and, as it's the final,

0:16:45 > 0:16:47the stylists are about to get to work on a cut that leaves

0:16:47 > 0:16:51even qualified hairdressers quaking in their boots.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56Deep breath, guys.

0:16:56 > 0:17:01It's the final time you'll come face to face with the blockheads

0:17:01 > 0:17:03in the precision cutting round.

0:17:03 > 0:17:09This is your last chance to convince the judges you can cut,

0:17:09 > 0:17:12and this week, it's the hardest cut of them all.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14The graduated bob.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18We can see there's two parts to the haircut.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20The bottom part of the graduation.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23And how to join the top part into it.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25When you finish your blow-dry

0:17:25 > 0:17:27and you've got the all-over face shape of your bob,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30then, to soften it, take any little bits of bulk out of the ends,

0:17:30 > 0:17:32use a technique called pointing.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Use the points of the scissors, into the hair,

0:17:34 > 0:17:38so you just blend the graduation and the bob.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41You have one hour and 40 minutes in which to complete this challenge.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43You will be ranked on your efforts.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46Grab your blockheads, off you go. Good luck!

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Although none of the stylists are qualified,

0:17:54 > 0:17:56they've all shown natural flair,

0:17:56 > 0:17:59but this is the cut that will really challenge them.

0:18:00 > 0:18:01Oh, gosh. OK.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03They've been given a sectioning map

0:18:03 > 0:18:07to help guide them through the first few stages.

0:18:07 > 0:18:08Just how I thought.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12I just copy the sectioning first.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Once that's done, I can start cutting.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19This has got so many levels.

0:18:19 > 0:18:20No idea what I'm doing!

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Let's talk theory. What is a graduated bob?

0:18:25 > 0:18:28A graduated bob is an iconic, sharp shape.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30It's almost a combination of two,

0:18:30 > 0:18:32where you've got the deep graduation,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35from the nape of the neck, up into the occipital bone,

0:18:35 > 0:18:37and then you've got the heaviness of the bob.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40- Occipital bone? - Just this little bone in here.

0:18:40 > 0:18:41That freaky lump at the back, there?

0:18:41 > 0:18:44Which gives you that wonderful line coming down,

0:18:44 > 0:18:45just hitting onto the chin.

0:18:45 > 0:18:50- Why have you chosen this?- It's a technically very challenging haircut.

0:18:50 > 0:18:51Will they be able to do this cut?

0:18:51 > 0:18:54This is a challenge for any stylist.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57We've got three brilliant contestants for this final,

0:18:57 > 0:19:00but they're not hairdressers, you know, they're amateur hairdressers.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03It is very easy to change the angle of the graduation

0:19:03 > 0:19:06and go slightly too tight to the head,

0:19:06 > 0:19:08which makes the graduation go way too high.

0:19:08 > 0:19:13- It's finding the right balance so the shape flows really beautifully.- OK!

0:19:19 > 0:19:21I have to do the good job.

0:19:23 > 0:19:24Have to.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29The graduated bob is divided into two distinct parts,

0:19:29 > 0:19:32the one-length bob, and below it, the cut is sloped,

0:19:32 > 0:19:34following the shape of the head,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37getting shorter into the nape of the neck.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42First they must tackle the lower part of the haircut.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45They section the hair from ear to ear,

0:19:45 > 0:19:48pinning the top half up and out of the way.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50That seems like a cut all of its own. And I've got to try

0:19:50 > 0:19:53and blend that with the top, while starting here.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57To create the graduated bottom section,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00the hair is pulled directly away from the head

0:20:00 > 0:20:04and cut at an angle, getting shorter towards the nape of the neck.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06Literally pulling it out from the head

0:20:06 > 0:20:09and holding my fingers at that angle,

0:20:09 > 0:20:11which I'm hoping is 45 degrees!

0:20:11 > 0:20:15And cutting it, so that's how you get the graduation.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17If angled correctly,

0:20:17 > 0:20:21the hair will be longer at the top, getting shorter towards the bottom.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Now I've got to do the rest of the hair like that.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28If the sectioning and cutting angle is wrong at the beginning,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31the entire haircut will be affected.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35It's quite difficult to know how far it should go, the graduation.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Dominika is being cowardly about cutting the hair.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49She's not going in sharp enough.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52The graduation won't go deep into the nape of the neck.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55It will stay a little bit heavier.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58She's a good inch and a half away from the neck.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00And you really only want to be a finger away.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02It could be a little bit long at the bottom.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04It just has to be symmetrical. Everything is wrong.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07It has to be symmetrical, it has to have a fringe,

0:21:07 > 0:21:10it has to blend, like the blending...everything!

0:21:10 > 0:21:12SHE BREATHES IN SHARPLY

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Marvin, he's gone way too short.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22Way too high in his graduation.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25He needs a little bit more of an angle.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Longer on the top, shorter on the bottom.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31He's gone same length, all the way through.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35It's going to be difficult for him to reduce that angle.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38Eventually, it's going to go higher and higher,

0:21:38 > 0:21:40reaching too high on the top.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44It is possible to save it by point cutting, but

0:21:44 > 0:21:46he's going to have to do a lot to diffuse it.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Once they've finished cutting the back section,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57they move on to cutting the bob.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01Now, I'm getting the sides cut to length.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08First, a guide is cut, which is then used as a template to match to,

0:22:08 > 0:22:11ensuring all of the hair ends up the same length.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16How's it going?

0:22:16 > 0:22:17It's going.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21You've got that whole laser-like focus on this bob, now.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25You're like The Terminator of cutting hair!

0:22:25 > 0:22:26"Terminator"! Yeah, yeah.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29I have to get it right.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34Is that your way of telling me I'm holding you up? To get lost...

0:22:34 > 0:22:37And they say men don't have intuition(!)

0:22:37 > 0:22:38LAUGHTER

0:22:38 > 0:22:39OK, on that note! Ha-ha!

0:22:55 > 0:22:56Now the fringe.

0:22:59 > 0:23:00It's quite a lot to ask us to do!

0:23:03 > 0:23:06The fringe needs to be cut perfectly horizontal,

0:23:06 > 0:23:10just touching the eyebrows, and precision is paramount.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13Why the left side is always longer?

0:23:16 > 0:23:1730 minutes left!

0:23:19 > 0:23:21- 30 minutes left. - Thanks for that(!)

0:23:22 > 0:23:26Drying the hair will help the stylists to spot any harsh lines,

0:23:26 > 0:23:30which they can correct using the point-cutting technique.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32I don't know how to do it!

0:23:32 > 0:23:35I really don't!

0:23:35 > 0:23:38I don't round-brush. I don't know how to do it.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Oh, my gosh!

0:23:44 > 0:23:45It's looking OK.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48I obviously need to do my pointing up, whatever they call it.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50SHE LAUGHS

0:23:50 > 0:23:51Point cutting is when you use

0:23:51 > 0:23:54the points of your scissors into the hair.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56The best technique is to go in, lift the hair,

0:23:56 > 0:23:58catch it with the comb and literally point.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02Where you get the blend between the graduation and the bob,

0:24:02 > 0:24:04you can sometimes get a sharper line,

0:24:04 > 0:24:08so you need to break that line up, so you get a complete flow.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11I've never done point cutting before.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15I think, if you look at that, it looks quite harsh and jagged,

0:24:15 > 0:24:18I think the point is to soften that bit there,

0:24:18 > 0:24:21so it kind of blends down. I think.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24What does your sister think about you being in the final?

0:24:24 > 0:24:25I remember you telling me

0:24:25 > 0:24:28one of the first haircuts you ever did was on your sister.

0:24:28 > 0:24:29What does she think of this?

0:24:29 > 0:24:32She's very happy for me. She's very proud of me as well.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37Like, me and my sister don't really say too much to each other, when it

0:24:37 > 0:24:41comes to things like that, like, "I love you" and things like that,

0:24:41 > 0:24:44but I could tell that she was definitely proud of me.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46Definitely. It felt nice.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Yeah, she should be. She should be.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52- I'll let you focus on this. - Thank you, Steve.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Five minutes, guys.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Five minutes left.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03It's a bit shorter than I wanted

0:25:03 > 0:25:06and that's a bit straight, but...I'm happy.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13It's too much. I should stop here.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16I've gone up too high. I should stop here with my graduating,

0:25:16 > 0:25:18and then the bob should sit there.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28Thank you, guys! Time's up!

0:25:28 > 0:25:33I'm sure you'll be overjoyed to say goodbye to those pesky blockheads.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38Here come the judges. Let's check out Dominika's handiwork.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46- Yeah, you've just gone a bit high on your graduation.- Yeah.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50You just went a little bit too much above the occipital bone.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53Yes, it's just that edge should be nice and square here,

0:25:53 > 0:25:55and then the angle comes up.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57You can see how steep it is.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01And, at the bottom, you've just left it a bit heavy.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03You've almost left a little skirt at the bottom.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07No, doesn't quite meet the requirements,

0:26:07 > 0:26:10but a lovely cut all the same. Nice one, Dominika.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22Overall you've got a great little bob here.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24She's really cute. Loving that.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Just, the graduation's a bit steep.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30You've gone a little bit above the occipital bone.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33So, if I turn my head, you can see the angle really high.

0:26:34 > 0:26:40It's the symmetry. We want exact lengths on both sides. Pretty good.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42The fringe.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46Seems like you've bounced it up a little bit too much

0:26:46 > 0:26:47with the blow-dry.

0:26:49 > 0:26:50I'd still be proud of it.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54It's just a bit too sharp, you know, but overall, well done.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57- Thank you.- Nice. Well done, Marvin.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01Has Katie done a graduated bob?

0:27:08 > 0:27:11This is much more of a graduation,

0:27:11 > 0:27:13as you can see from the back,

0:27:13 > 0:27:16working from shorter to longer,

0:27:16 > 0:27:17flows really well.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21So, it's right where we said, below the occipital bone.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25We can see the strong bob going into the graduation.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27It's almost shorter on this side and longer here.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- It's got a slight angle. - It can come from the blow-dry.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33And you can see that you are the right length,

0:27:33 > 0:27:36but you can ruin your length by blow-drying it too high.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39Overall, this is a really great little bob,

0:27:39 > 0:27:43and it looks very much like the block that we did.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45- Yeah.- Nice work, Katie. Brilliant.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47- Well done. Thank you so much. - Thank you!

0:27:50 > 0:27:51Congratulations.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55You have now completed the grand final blockhead challenge.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58The judges will now rank your efforts

0:27:58 > 0:28:00whilst you chill out in the prep room, so off you go, guys.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02Well done, good work.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10It's not perfect, but at least it's got a good balance.

0:28:10 > 0:28:11It's all coming down, though.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14Katie and Dominika's cuts were very good.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18I just hope there's that little thing that pushes mine

0:28:18 > 0:28:19over both of theirs.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23Graduation's pretty perfect. That's what we're looking for.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25It definitely feels like the final today.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29Everyone's a lot more serious. And everyone wants it a bit more.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32That's not graduation anywhere. It's a different haircut.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35I just want to come second, at least.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39I don't think I want to come first. Second would be amazing.

0:28:39 > 0:28:40SHE SQUEAKS

0:28:40 > 0:28:43- Right? So we know what we're doing? - Yeah, mm-hm.- Cool.

0:28:46 > 0:28:51Dominika, Marvin, Katie, the judges have ranked your efforts

0:28:51 > 0:28:55in your final blockhead challenge, and they are as follows.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59In last place is...

0:29:02 > 0:29:03..Dominika.

0:29:03 > 0:29:04SHE GROANS

0:29:04 > 0:29:06A bit annoyed.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08In second place...

0:29:10 > 0:29:11..Marvin,

0:29:11 > 0:29:18which means, Katie, first place in the last blockhead challenge.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20Congratulations.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22How does that feel?

0:29:22 > 0:29:23That's good!

0:29:23 > 0:29:26Say goodbye to our judges, we'll see you tomorrow.

0:29:26 > 0:29:32Now, as you know, usually your ranking has a direct

0:29:32 > 0:29:35impact on the model you'll choose for tomorrow's freestyle challenge.

0:29:35 > 0:29:36Not today.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39THEY LAUGH

0:29:39 > 0:29:43It's the grand final, so we've decided to up the ante.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46We will choose your model for you.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Now, I just want you to know the theme for tomorrow's

0:29:49 > 0:29:53freestyle challenge is...Hollywood glamour.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58It's a difficult topic, obviously, so we've decided,

0:29:58 > 0:30:01in order to give you the best possible chance of success,

0:30:01 > 0:30:03we've decided to introduce you to your models today.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05Don't look so worried!

0:30:05 > 0:30:09'What the stylists don't know is that the models they'll be transforming

0:30:09 > 0:30:11'have the most challenging hair they've taken on so far.'

0:30:11 > 0:30:12Bring on the hair!

0:30:12 > 0:30:14'It's their mums.'

0:30:14 > 0:30:18It'll be a really big shock, she won't be expecting it at all.

0:30:20 > 0:30:21Marvin tries to do things to my hair

0:30:21 > 0:30:25but I am one of those mothers who's "No, no, no, no, no."

0:30:25 > 0:30:26He wants to do... "No!"

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Oh, no!

0:30:40 > 0:30:41Go and say hi.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48You kept that quiet, didn't you?

0:30:51 > 0:30:55I've worked on my mum's hair before. She normally wears

0:30:55 > 0:30:58single plaits, extensions.

0:30:58 > 0:31:03Yeah, she'll be getting something completely different!

0:31:03 > 0:31:05HE LAUGHS

0:31:07 > 0:31:10Yeah. I don't think Marvin would do anything that would...

0:31:10 > 0:31:11Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14You wouldn't dare cut my hair!

0:31:14 > 0:31:17It's a totally different plan than I had.

0:31:17 > 0:31:21It's just now I probably need to put some extensions in.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23And blend it properly.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25- Bonding glue. - SHE LAUGHS

0:31:25 > 0:31:28She doesn't know about it yet.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30Usually my mum doesn't let me do her hair.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32No, we've done it for special occasions.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35But my hair's quite fine and dry.

0:31:35 > 0:31:39- And frizzy.- And frizzy and fluffy, so it's...

0:31:39 > 0:31:43Doing Hollywood glamour on my mum's hair is going to be a challenge.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46I'm proud of him, really proud of him.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52Don't you dare.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56Don't you dare!

0:32:02 > 0:32:04It's the final day of the competition.

0:32:04 > 0:32:08Today we find out who is worthy of being named Britain's best

0:32:08 > 0:32:09amateur hairstylist.

0:32:09 > 0:32:13But first, Dominika, Katie and Marvin have one final challenge to face.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16It's the freestyle round.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20The hair belongs to their mums and the theme is Hollywood glamour.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23This is going to be epic.

0:32:23 > 0:32:27The only two things standing in my way is Dominika and Katie.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30Dominika's probably going to win it. She has been consistently

0:32:30 > 0:32:33good all the way through. I don't think she's ever had a bad one.

0:32:33 > 0:32:38We know Katie, she always likes to pull off something that's just like, "Whoa..."

0:32:38 > 0:32:41And then Marvin, I'm sure he's going to come with full

0:32:41 > 0:32:43head of extension today.

0:32:43 > 0:32:46Good morning.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48ALL: Good morning.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52It's your very last chance to prove to the judges that you

0:32:52 > 0:32:56deserve to be crowned Britain's best amateur hairstylist.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58The theme is Hollywood glamour.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02You can interpret that how you like, as long as your lovely mums

0:33:02 > 0:33:06end up sporting a hairdo that a star of the silver screen

0:33:06 > 0:33:09would choose to wear to the latest Hollywood premiere.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11Remember your model.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13The style you choose must be suitable.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15So elegance is the word.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17It's not about being cool this time.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19It's about looking beautiful.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21Make the hair shiny, I want to see some

0:33:21 > 0:33:24movement, shine, quality into the hair.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28Your mothers await, you have 2½ hours.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30Best of luck, guys. Go get 'em.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37- Hello!- Hello!

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Let's do this quick.

0:33:40 > 0:33:44Right, I'm going to pump you up here.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48In previous weeks, the amateurs have had models' hair to work

0:33:48 > 0:33:51with in this round, but, as hair can get thinner with age,

0:33:51 > 0:33:56tackling their mums' hair will pose a real challenge for the three finalists.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58All possible products.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00I've never had to do this.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05Well, you're doing it now, innit?

0:34:08 > 0:34:11The stylists can use anything available in the prep room,

0:34:11 > 0:34:13including a vast array of extensions.

0:34:15 > 0:34:20- You want me to take my glasses off? - Please.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24Hollywood glamour - what are you expecting?

0:34:24 > 0:34:27They've got to look glamorous and beautiful.

0:34:27 > 0:34:31They can't look silly. They're not 16, they're more mature.

0:34:31 > 0:34:32They can have longer hair.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35If the extensions are put in they have to be beautifully done.

0:34:35 > 0:34:36That's the trick, exactly.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38You've got to believe that it's their own hair.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42It will really test them - a very, very strong challenge.

0:34:42 > 0:34:46Out of all the mums, whose hair looks like the biggest challenge?

0:34:46 > 0:34:48I think all of them have their own challenges.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51Marvin's got to put in a lot of work to add on

0:34:51 > 0:34:55all the hair, maybe half a wig, maybe weaves into it.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58There's whole techniques of making it look real,

0:34:58 > 0:35:01blending the hair into it. That's not easy.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04Dominika has short hair. How much she's going to create

0:35:04 > 0:35:06a piece by keeping it short,

0:35:06 > 0:35:09or is she going to bring the extension...how's she going to

0:35:09 > 0:35:10blend it into it?

0:35:10 > 0:35:12Katie's mum's is quite fine.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14And she has a bit of a fringe, so

0:35:14 > 0:35:17I personally think Katie's mum could be the hardest.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24What's the plan today?

0:35:24 > 0:35:26The plan today would be

0:35:26 > 0:35:29a touch of an extension,

0:35:29 > 0:35:31to give her a bit longer...

0:35:31 > 0:35:34- How will you attach them? - I'm going to glue it.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36- Have you done that before?- No.

0:35:36 > 0:35:38- So you'll put it in a "U" shape round here?- Yeah.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41OK, that's good, so you'll get much more volume here.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44Going for, like, a Joan Rivers hair...

0:35:44 > 0:35:46Oh, fabulous!

0:35:47 > 0:35:49I'm going for an up-do.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52A chignon at the back with curls and stuff on it.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I'll dry it all and then

0:35:55 > 0:35:57sew the extensions in.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59Your fingers are just like magic right now.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01I'm just watching them.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03So what's the plan?

0:36:03 > 0:36:07My plan is to do a Veronica Lake-inspired kind of

0:36:07 > 0:36:10- hairstyle...- Oh, wow. - ..with more of a modern twist

0:36:10 > 0:36:11via Katy Perry.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14Just the colours...

0:36:14 > 0:36:17- Throwing a bit of Katy Perry in? - Yeah.- And how are you doing this?

0:36:17 > 0:36:19For this challenge I will be making a "U" part wig,

0:36:19 > 0:36:23this section will be left up and I'll incorporate her hair over it.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26- Then I'll just work on that. - And you're going to make it?

0:36:26 > 0:36:29- Yeah.- Oh! Really?!

0:36:29 > 0:36:30I'm very excited to see that.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36To get volume into her mum Bourgena's hair,

0:36:36 > 0:36:40Dominika begins by blow-drying it with a small, round brush.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43Yes, I'm just putting it in the Velcro rollers,

0:36:43 > 0:36:46and blast with hot air again and then let it cool.

0:36:46 > 0:36:53The longer it sets, the better it's going to look.

0:36:53 > 0:36:57Marvin has nearly finished braiding his mum Lorna's hair.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00Time to make my wig.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03The hairpiece Marvin will be making himself from scratch will

0:37:03 > 0:37:05cover his mum's entire head.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08It's the first time a hairpiece of this type has been

0:37:08 > 0:37:10attempted in the competition.

0:37:10 > 0:37:13Marvin's got to put in a lot of work and add on all the hair,

0:37:13 > 0:37:18making it look real, blending the hair into it. That's not easy.

0:37:18 > 0:37:22With the wig cap, she'll be able to take it off and put it on,

0:37:22 > 0:37:26cos my mum doesn't like wearing a weave.

0:37:26 > 0:37:30Yeah! That's it, going to be making my wig now!

0:37:30 > 0:37:34He measures the size of his mum's head,

0:37:34 > 0:37:37marks on the wig cap where the hair extensions need to be glued and

0:37:37 > 0:37:41where his mum's natural hair will be pulled through to be blended in.

0:37:41 > 0:37:46When you're doing hairpieces, the head size is really important.

0:37:46 > 0:37:47It's like a hat.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49So the shape would cover the back here, and come round,

0:37:49 > 0:37:51so profiling the head.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54Marvin glues the wefts of real hair onto

0:37:54 > 0:37:57the cap following the shape of the head.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00I'm not going to add any layers, I'm going to keep it all long

0:38:00 > 0:38:01and just cut the front.

0:38:01 > 0:38:07Then I will incorporate it to my mum's head via wig clips.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10So I'm proper trying to concentrate, sorry.

0:38:11 > 0:38:15Like Marvin, Dominika is also using glue

0:38:15 > 0:38:19but she's sticking the extensions directly onto her mum's own hair.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22I'm gluing the hair extensions instead of doing the clip-ons

0:38:22 > 0:38:25because it's just quicker. I hope it's quicker.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28I guess it's slightly like with the eyelashes.

0:38:28 > 0:38:32Wait a little bit to get tacky then stick it in.

0:38:32 > 0:38:33OK.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36Smells like the eyelashes glue.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39So there are two techniques.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42Either you apply it flat on the scalp or you apply it up onto

0:38:42 > 0:38:44the hair, your previous section.

0:38:44 > 0:38:47Here, she's applied it on the hair so she can have a bit more

0:38:47 > 0:38:50elevation from the roots, which is a very good technique.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53The extensions are easily removed

0:38:53 > 0:38:57when required using a bond remover which dissolves the glue.

0:38:58 > 0:39:03I'm about to sew the extensions in at super speed!

0:39:03 > 0:39:08Katie plaits a horizontal corn row into her mum Jeanette's hair

0:39:08 > 0:39:11and sews the extensions into it.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13- Sorry.- No, it's OK.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16It's when I jump out the seat and scream you need to worry.

0:39:16 > 0:39:17I know, yeah.

0:39:17 > 0:39:19I'm literally doing a blanket stitch.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22It's where my sewing skills come in handy.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24The blanket stitch...

0:39:25 > 0:39:28It's slightly dark but I think we'll get away with it.

0:39:31 > 0:39:32Have you fallen asleep there, Mum?

0:39:32 > 0:39:37No, I'm awake. I'm watching everything that you're doing.

0:39:37 > 0:39:42This is a razor blade. Oop, can't stop shaking. This is dangerous.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47To give his hairpiece a layered look, Marvin is cutting

0:39:47 > 0:39:51the darker extensions before he glues them to the wig cap.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54I'm just trying to make the hair shorter without it being too blunt.

0:39:59 > 0:40:03I'm not used to being put under pressure to do something I enjoy.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18You haven't got any clingfilm underneath?

0:40:18 > 0:40:20To make sure your glue isn't taken through it.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24Oh, no, it'll be fine. It's glue, innit?

0:40:24 > 0:40:26If I'd been gluing, I'd have clingfilmed

0:40:26 > 0:40:28my block first,

0:40:28 > 0:40:29then I would have put on my net,

0:40:29 > 0:40:31and then started the gluing process,

0:40:31 > 0:40:33cos then once it's dry,

0:40:33 > 0:40:36it would have all just lifted off nicely.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38I've sorted this now, Mum.

0:40:38 > 0:40:39- So it's stuck?- Kind of.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54Strip this wig head.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56Whoops.

0:41:01 > 0:41:05- Gendobre, Bourgena.- Gendobre, Steve.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10Have you worked on your mother's hair much over the years?

0:41:10 > 0:41:13I would usually do a bit of cutting, blow-drys.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15What age were you when you started?

0:41:15 > 0:41:17I always remember I was

0:41:17 > 0:41:20watching my mum in the bathroom getting ready,

0:41:20 > 0:41:22when we were on the way to nursery,

0:41:22 > 0:41:24and there would be this motion like...

0:41:24 > 0:41:28Hairspray and fingers through, mess it up.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31We're thinking about '80s and huge...

0:41:31 > 0:41:34That's how I learned to backcomb.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37- From my mum.- Your mum's your muse? - Yeah, definitely.

0:41:37 > 0:41:38What does your mother do?

0:41:38 > 0:41:41My mother is retired now. She used to be a secretary,

0:41:41 > 0:41:43she used to work as a telephonist.

0:41:43 > 0:41:46- She used to... - I'm not surprised with that voice.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48She's got a very sexy voice.

0:41:48 > 0:41:49SHE LAUGHS

0:41:49 > 0:41:51- No, she has.- Hello!

0:41:51 > 0:41:54She should work in voiceovers, you know what I mean?

0:41:54 > 0:41:57SHE SPEAKS POLISH

0:41:59 > 0:42:02Thank you!

0:42:02 > 0:42:04Thank you!

0:42:20 > 0:42:22Feels like there's loads coming off. Is there?

0:42:22 > 0:42:27No. Right, let's get you curled.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Having created the extra volume,

0:42:29 > 0:42:32Dominika now needs to cut the extensions to the correct

0:42:32 > 0:42:37length and try to blend them seamlessly into her mum's own hair.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41It just feels...look, it just goes in the steps.

0:42:57 > 0:43:03I cut too much hair in one go. I did something weird.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05Yeah, it looks ridiculous now.

0:43:15 > 0:43:20With the hairpiece now made, Marvin is gluing hairclips onto it.

0:43:20 > 0:43:24He cuts out the front section that his mum's own hair will be

0:43:24 > 0:43:27pulled through, and then attaches it to her head.

0:43:27 > 0:43:32- Sorry if this hurts.- Hm? - I said sorry if this hurts. - That's OK, babes.

0:43:32 > 0:43:35Beauty comes at a price. If you're putting an accessory into someone's hair,

0:43:35 > 0:43:38there's got to be a little bit of pain for a couple of seconds.

0:43:38 > 0:43:42He clips the hairpiece to the braids at the bottom of the head,

0:43:42 > 0:43:46then pulls it tightly over, clipping it at the top where his mum's

0:43:46 > 0:43:48own hair will be blended into it.

0:43:48 > 0:43:52Marvin could go wrong with it. It needs to feel fitted, it needs to feel comfortable,

0:43:52 > 0:43:57it needs to feel secure and also flow and lie like real hair.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10Half an hour left, guys, half an hour.

0:44:10 > 0:44:14'Dominika is still struggling to blend the extensions into her

0:44:14 > 0:44:16'mum's hair.'

0:44:16 > 0:44:21I'm just trying to thin it cos it looks still part of it.

0:44:27 > 0:44:28Dominika.

0:44:28 > 0:44:30She's using every tool in the world that cuts hair,

0:44:30 > 0:44:33she's chipping and cutting all over the place.

0:44:33 > 0:44:34So what worries me

0:44:34 > 0:44:37is that she's taking out all the volume that she actually put in.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40She's reducing the whole thickness, the whole length.

0:44:40 > 0:44:42It's going to become next to nothing.

0:44:42 > 0:44:44Don't know if it was worth doing it at the end of the day.

0:44:49 > 0:44:52Bend your head forward.

0:44:52 > 0:44:54With his hairpiece securely in place,

0:44:54 > 0:44:59Marvin can finally begin to create his Hollywood-inspired waves.

0:44:59 > 0:45:01I'm curling the hair with the curling tongs and then I'm

0:45:01 > 0:45:06letting it cool down and set, with it being rolled up and clipped.

0:45:08 > 0:45:11I think it's lovely.

0:45:11 > 0:45:15When it's finished it's going to be marvellous, it's gorgeous.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20I actually think they were a good idea.

0:45:20 > 0:45:22- Yeah, they've gone well. - Have they?- Yeah.

0:45:22 > 0:45:26Curls finished, Katie moves on to creating her mum's chignon.

0:45:26 > 0:45:30I've literally put a bun ring underneath

0:45:30 > 0:45:34and I'm placing curls on bit by bit to build up the kind of chignon.

0:45:34 > 0:45:37Well, that's the plan anyway.

0:45:37 > 0:45:41The problem with Katie is she hasn't used mousse or enough spray

0:45:41 > 0:45:43to have enough grip into the hair,

0:45:43 > 0:45:47so I'm scared it will flop down within the length of it.

0:45:47 > 0:45:49Do you want more height?

0:45:49 > 0:45:51Just do what's best for you.

0:45:51 > 0:45:54Katie's backcombing

0:45:54 > 0:45:58is really weak. She's putting it in and she's kind of taking it out.

0:46:07 > 0:46:11I have quite a lot to finish.

0:46:11 > 0:46:15I'm still not 100% happy with the shape.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18I don't want it to look tacky.

0:46:20 > 0:46:24With the challenge almost over, Marvin must make sure

0:46:24 > 0:46:29that his mum's own hair and hairline blend seamlessly with the hairpiece.

0:46:29 > 0:46:32I am feeling Hollywood at the moment, yes.

0:46:34 > 0:46:36Five minutes.

0:46:36 > 0:46:39Five minutes till the end of your final challenge

0:46:39 > 0:46:40in the grand final.

0:46:40 > 0:46:43Do you think I could make something in five minutes?

0:46:43 > 0:46:48Do feathers, stick them behind my ears.

0:46:50 > 0:46:55I'd just stick the green feathers in, Kate. I need to cover something.

0:47:02 > 0:47:04Don't forget you've got clips here.

0:47:04 > 0:47:06Three minutes!

0:47:11 > 0:47:13Raising her eyebrows is a good sign.

0:47:19 > 0:47:21There's clips all over this.

0:47:21 > 0:47:23- It doesn't matter, does it? - Yeah, it does.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26Every time you're moving forward you're sitting on the curls.

0:47:27 > 0:47:31Two minutes! Two minutes remain.

0:47:31 > 0:47:33How are you feeling, are you happy?

0:47:33 > 0:47:35Yeah, she's happy.

0:47:35 > 0:47:37- She thinks the same.- You're happy?

0:47:37 > 0:47:41Yeah, definitely. The hair made with love.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45I just love it!

0:47:45 > 0:47:48- That is fantastic.- Thanks, Mum.

0:47:48 > 0:47:51- Leave!- Sorry.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08- Step away!- All right!

0:48:10 > 0:48:12- Thank you.- It's all right, Mum.

0:48:12 > 0:48:15'Alain and Denise are looking for luxuriant,

0:48:15 > 0:48:21'elegant hairstyles that suit the mums and look good from 360 degrees.'

0:48:21 > 0:48:23Here they come.

0:48:34 > 0:48:35Let's have a look.

0:48:35 > 0:48:37MUSIC: "Glamorous" by Fergie

0:48:48 > 0:48:51Thank you, Jeanette, take a seat.

0:48:51 > 0:48:53There it is.

0:48:55 > 0:48:58- Feels really nice. - It looks gorgeous, very elegant.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00It's so clean and I have to say

0:49:00 > 0:49:01I cannot see where

0:49:01 > 0:49:05the real hair meets the extensions.

0:49:05 > 0:49:07What is really lovely is the shine.

0:49:07 > 0:49:10Even your pin curls are really defined.

0:49:10 > 0:49:14Maybe one too many. It could have been to reduce

0:49:14 > 0:49:15a little bit of it.

0:49:15 > 0:49:19It's safe, it's settled and it suits

0:49:19 > 0:49:21your mother beautifully.

0:49:21 > 0:49:25I would like to have seen a tiny bit more height.

0:49:25 > 0:49:26Yeah.

0:49:26 > 0:49:28It doesn't take much for the volume

0:49:28 > 0:49:31just by putting your tail comb inside, lifting it up,

0:49:31 > 0:49:33but those are details - overall, a great effort.

0:49:33 > 0:49:37Thank you, Katie, thank you, Jeanette, really good.

0:49:37 > 0:49:41Let's have a chat with Dominika and Bourgena.

0:49:41 > 0:49:43# MUSIC: "Atomic" by Blondie

0:49:43 > 0:49:46# Magnificent

0:49:46 > 0:49:54# Tonight, bright

0:49:54 > 0:49:59# Oh, your hair is beautiful

0:50:01 > 0:50:07# Oh, tonight

0:50:07 > 0:50:09# Atomic. #

0:50:09 > 0:50:11Thank you.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15The colour works really well.

0:50:15 > 0:50:17You feel that it's her own hair.

0:50:18 > 0:50:20When you were chopping into it a little bit,

0:50:20 > 0:50:24you looked like you were worried about how they were responding.

0:50:24 > 0:50:28Yeah, because whilst you chop it, and then because it's dry as well,

0:50:28 > 0:50:32we've done all this cutting wet and I really got used to the wet one

0:50:32 > 0:50:34and then the chop was just like blunt.

0:50:34 > 0:50:36And I think because you didn't understand,

0:50:36 > 0:50:38you didn't get that very fine finish.

0:50:38 > 0:50:40Just that perfect...

0:50:40 > 0:50:42- It was definitely a guessing game this time.- Yeah.

0:50:42 > 0:50:46Putting the extension is always daring on short hair.

0:50:46 > 0:50:49It's good to cut them before you put them in.

0:50:49 > 0:50:53So how do you say, "Do you feel glamorous?" in Polish?

0:50:53 > 0:50:56Czujesz glamorous?

0:50:56 > 0:50:58That just sounded like English.

0:50:58 > 0:50:59SHE SPEAKS POLISH

0:50:59 > 0:51:01In full meaning of it.

0:51:01 > 0:51:05You feel the full meaning of glamorous. Fabulous. Nice work.

0:51:49 > 0:51:51It doesn't even feel heavy.

0:51:56 > 0:51:59It really is lovely. Yeah, that's beautifully done.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02I really like the effect of the pink.

0:52:02 > 0:52:04It really...cos you can see the length into it.

0:52:04 > 0:52:07- I love the shine.- Thank you. - I love the shimmer through it,

0:52:07 > 0:52:09it really is glamour.

0:52:09 > 0:52:12If you brushed it a little bit more you could have created

0:52:12 > 0:52:16a little bit more...waves, which are also very glossy and glamorous.

0:52:16 > 0:52:19Most importantly, how do you feel, Lorna?

0:53:01 > 0:53:05but I'm trying to keep it, like, low profile right now.

0:53:05 > 0:53:09Overall, I think what the judges said was positive.

0:53:09 > 0:53:10It suited my mum well.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13It was all good, I was happy.

0:56:14 > 0:56:17Out of all the contestants I think Marvin is the one who listened most.

0:56:17 > 0:56:21Really got very serious into all the techniques,

0:56:21 > 0:56:25the finishing of his hair, and today was the peak of his work.
