0:07:04 > 0:07:09- But it was actually an act of - goodwill that saved Edleston House.

0:07:09 > 0:07:15- The local businessman, Emyr Davies - purchased this gem from the council.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- I already had three hotels - in Aberystwyth.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29- ..and I thought it would be ideal - for holiday apartments.

0:07:29 > 0:07:34- The building currently contains - five holiday apartments.

0:07:34 > 0:07:39- The biggest one has three bedrooms - and there are kitchens and ensuites.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- Extras include a Jacuzzi - and a splendid garden.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47- But the selling point - is actually its past.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- The date of the building - is on the house and it's 1898.

0:07:52 > 0:07:58- It was built by Dr John Bonsall, - a member of a prominent family.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01- This was his home and surgery.

0:08:01 > 0:08:07- It developed into a nursing home.

0:08:07 > 0:08:13- Following this, - it was used as a county court.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17- But then the place - fell into disrepute.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21- The garden grew wild - and the ironwork started to rust.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23- It was in a very sorry state.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- Yes, indeed, the ironwork.

0:08:28 > 0:08:33- One of the striking features of the - building is the balcony or veranda.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38- It's reminiscent - of the old colonies.

0:08:38 > 0:08:45- They are more common in Australia, - New Zealand or New Orleans.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- You think of the American colonies - in Maryland and Carolina...

0:08:48 > 0:08:52- ..and places associated - with Gone With The Wind.

0:08:53 > 0:08:58- I'd like to think that - it was made in Aberystwyth.

0:08:58 > 0:09:06- Aberystwyth had many ironworks that - exported produce across the world.

0:09:06 > 0:09:12- This is a wonderful example - of the work they could produce.

0:09:15 > 0:09:20- ..so any renovation work - had to follow strict guidelines.

0:09:20 > 0:09:25- The place was in disrepair - after being closed for five years.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29- We used a sandblaster - on the front railings...

0:09:30 > 0:09:32- ..and it needed six coats of paint.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37- We couldn't change the windows - but had to repair them.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- Things were recreated - to how they were in the past.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45- You never know what to expect - at a listed building...

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- ..until you start the process.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- The building needed new architraves, - doors and windows.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57- They all had to match - the original features.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03- This is the original staircase - of the building...

0:10:04 > 0:10:08- ..and I think it looks great - after its renovation.

0:10:13 > 0:10:18- Aberystwyth is improving as a town - and enticing more visitors.
