0:14:50 > 0:14:54- ..but fighting in a claustrophobic - environment was horrific.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59- The miners were paid more - because of the added dangers...

0:15:02 > 0:15:06- In a series of explosions - in June 1917...

0:15:06 > 0:15:10- ..they caused the death - of 10,000 Germans.

0:15:11 > 0:15:16- It's believed that Lloyd George - heard these explosions in London!

0:15:18 > 0:15:22- We can still see the effects - of this horrific war to this day.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26- The trenches remain - in many parts of France...

0:15:27 > 0:15:31- ..but so do the craters - caused by the explosions.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36- The biggest is at Messines - and was caused in June 1917.

0:15:38 > 0:15:44- The physical scars are a reminder of - the efficiency of the Welsh miners.
