0:04:08 > 0:04:11CHEERING

0:04:17 > 0:04:19- Well done. How are you keeping? - I'm great. How are you?

0:04:19 > 0:04:20Not too bad at all.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Tell me, first of all - Pugwash. Any relation to Captain Pugwash?

0:04:23 > 0:04:26- Where did the name come from? - Yes, that was the name.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30It was taken back in the mid-'90s by me because I looked like him,

0:04:30 > 0:04:32and it went on and we got a lot of American fans.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34It's the capital of Nova Scotia.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38It also means "spiritual pool" in India.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40- But it's a term in America that I can't say.- OK.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43- Why's that?- I'll tell you afterwards.- OK. Not on live TV?- No.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Not on any TV!

0:04:45 > 0:04:47Tell me about the musical influence of everyone in the band,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49because you've been compared to...

0:04:49 > 0:04:52People say your influence has been the Beatles, ELO, Beach Boys.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53How do you feel about that?

0:04:53 > 0:04:57Yes, we all love that trio of bands because they are the gods,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00but Joey's into a lot of ska and reggae and soul,

0:05:00 > 0:05:04as is Tosh. Small Faces, of course - a lot of great '60s bands.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08I'm a big fan of the Move. '60s band ELO of course, as well.

0:05:08 > 0:05:09And Shaun's into many things.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11Talk to me about some of the album, because I know...

0:05:11 > 0:05:15Maybe you haven't been asked this before, but you had a collaboration

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- with Neil Hannon on a cricketing theme album.- Who?

0:05:17 > 0:05:19- I know - who's Neil Hannon? - Dave Hammond.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22We did BBC breakfast telly during the Duckworth Lewis Method thing...

0:05:22 > 0:05:25- Ah.- And he was introduced as Dave Hammond.- No way.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27So we call him Dave ever since.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Neil Hannon and the cricket theme. Tell me about the Duckworth Lewis Method.

0:05:31 > 0:05:32We just wrote songs for other people.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35We got to know each other in Dublin.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37We just really got on very well and we wrote some songs together

0:05:37 > 0:05:40for, like, Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner, but they weren't taken.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42They were sent back and said, "Thanks very much, but..."

0:05:42 > 0:05:46They were good songs, so we said one day, "What about cricket lyrics?"

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Just for a laugh - instead of "I love you, you love me."

0:05:48 > 0:05:51That was me talking to Dave, because we do love each other. We're in a relationship.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53You're writing songs for Kylie Minogue,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56is it difficult to have your song sent back?

0:05:56 > 0:05:58- Is that kind of...?- God, no.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02I get milk sent back. I send everything back.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03People send everything back to me.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06No, it's never bothered me because these things are always taken on

0:06:06 > 0:06:09by Swedish pop writers or whatever, people who are millionaires.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Sometimes one or two get through, but we were happy it came back to us

0:06:12 > 0:06:15because it ended up being Ivor Novello nominated.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17- Yay!- Excellente.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20I get a tenner every time I mention the Ivor Novello nomination.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Tell me about The Olympus Sound, your latest Pugwash collection.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- Yes.- What has been the inspiration for the songs on that?

0:06:26 > 0:06:29It was a pretty dark period in my life, the last couple of years.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31I had a bit of a health scare and I gave up drink

0:06:31 > 0:06:35and gave up all the bad things. I took up byying guitars.

0:06:35 > 0:06:40There's a lot of kind of darkness to my stuff anyway,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43a lot of dark edges and stuff, but it's always poppy.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45There's always a bit of pop.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48So it's a bit of a dark record but it's a very personal record as well,

0:06:48 > 0:06:49but we made it as a band.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52These four people here you see made that record in three weeks

0:06:52 > 0:06:55in Dublin. We're very proud of it.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56Now that that period maybe is behind you,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59are you looking forward now to another album - a more upbeat album?

0:06:59 > 0:07:03- Oh, for God's sake! Another one?! - Another one, yes!- I've had six!

0:07:03 > 0:07:06God knows we've had six. We've a great back catalogue.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08All our back catalogue is coming out in Japan next year

0:07:08 > 0:07:12and we're going to get The Olympus Sound into America as well,
