0:00:25 > 0:00:26No, I'm not and mind your language.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29So let's meet the five magicians putting their reputations

0:00:29 > 0:00:31and possibly their lives on the line.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32There's Damien O'Brien,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35street magician and precision shaving expert.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Close-up magic is really great

0:00:37 > 0:00:38'because it's in the people's hands.'

0:00:38 > 0:00:40There's no stage,

0:00:40 > 0:00:41'no elaborate sets.'

0:00:41 > 0:00:42It's as real as it gets.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44'It's right in front of them.'

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Put the white ball on whatever card you feel it's closest to.

0:00:47 > 0:00:48- On the nine. - On the nine, right?

0:00:48 > 0:00:52'I will work really hard to make it memorable.'

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Take it out. Turn it straight over, have a look.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57- THEY LAUGH - Wow.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Jasz Vegas, alternative magician, burlesque dancer

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and master of blue steel.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04The sort of magic you can expect from me is the unexpected.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Can you just check that's a real nail for me?

0:01:06 > 0:01:07'I like to do things'

0:01:07 > 0:01:08that are edgy, that are different

0:01:08 > 0:01:10'and beautifully strange.'

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Don't ask her to help you out with DIY though,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14she'll have an item from your tool box into an orifice

0:01:14 > 0:01:15before you know it.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Next up it's Ben Hart, a young gent with fast fingers

0:01:18 > 0:01:20and an excellent hairdresser.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Magic is all about the audience who are there.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24This coin will go from here, watch it go.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27'It's got to do with how does the audience interact emotionally'

0:01:27 > 0:01:29with the magic that you're doing.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31And it reappears on your shoulder.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32'Cos magic happens'

0:01:32 > 0:01:33only in people's heads, nowhere else.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40This gorgeous specimen is Chris Cox, mind bender and all-round geek.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44My main job here is to entertain, hopefully to make people laugh.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46There you go, grab hold of it and show the camera it. Do as I do.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49'And mix lots of different techniques together to make it look'

0:01:49 > 0:01:51like I can read minds, but I can't.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53But I am good at lying though.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56And just think of your time, tell me your time.

0:01:56 > 0:01:574:17.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Have a look at the clock, Ian.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01IAN LAUGHS

0:02:01 > 0:02:04And finally, Dee Christopher, a Goth who by all accounts

0:02:04 > 0:02:05is a barrel of laughs.

0:02:05 > 0:02:10The one thing in magic that excites me the most is seeing something new.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Seeing something original, something with edge.

0:02:18 > 0:02:19Prepare for dramatic voice,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21because not only are the magicians competing,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23they're also scoring each other out of ten,

0:02:23 > 0:02:27all of them trying to avoid that killer trick.

0:02:27 > 0:02:32Dear magicians, uh, this week's killer trick is electroshock.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35This week's losing magician will feel the force

0:02:35 > 0:02:38of hundreds of thousands of volts of electricity,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40more than enough to fry your brain.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42That is horrible.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Yeah, look at all the electricity flying around.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46If one of our magicians gets caught up in that,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48we will have a human barbecue on our hands.

0:02:48 > 0:02:49Tricks involving electrical errors

0:02:49 > 0:02:52have certainly killed magicians in the past.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55You know, the Great Lafayette wired a plug up wrong

0:02:55 > 0:02:56and it burnt the whole theatre down.

0:02:56 > 0:02:57- On a trick?- Yeah, he died.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- He wasn't just wiring up a new blender or something?- No.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- My God. Did anyone else die? - That's an electricity related death.

0:03:03 > 0:03:04Yeah, loads of people died.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06So it wasn't just him, he took out the whole theatre?

0:03:06 > 0:03:08It was really tragic, it started as a joke

0:03:08 > 0:03:09- but now it's turned really dark. - Too soon?

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Thanks for lowering the tone.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14What the magicians need now is a theme to base their tricks on.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18This week's challenge is to perform tricks incorporating...

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Ooh!

0:03:21 > 0:03:22I don't own any gadgets.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Oh, actually, I got a pen here, Chris.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28You just...just click it on for me, activate the pen.

0:03:28 > 0:03:29Ahh!

0:03:29 > 0:03:31CHRIS LAUGHS IN PAIN

0:03:31 > 0:03:33What the hell's wrong with your pen!?

0:03:33 > 0:03:36All the magicians are performing in front of real members of the public.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39You're seeing genuine reactions as the magic happens.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41There are no camera tricks, no special effects,

0:03:41 > 0:03:43and given the reckless abandon with which that electric pen

0:03:43 > 0:03:46is being used, no health and safety checks.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49First to show off his gadget is Damien,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51who's desperate to steal the limelight.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Everyone has a camera these days

0:03:55 > 0:03:57and it's probably one of the biggest gadgets out there

0:03:57 > 0:04:01so I thought let's use a camera today.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Damien's doing a photo shoot with Radio 1 Extra's Sarah Jane Crawford

0:04:04 > 0:04:05and some of her mates.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Of course, he could've photographed the four other magicians

0:04:08 > 0:04:10but no-one wants to see that.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12I wanted to do some magic for you guys.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Now, I have got a deck of cards with me.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19So as you can see, every single card is completely different.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21So, Sarah, I just want you to point at one, OK?

0:04:21 > 0:04:23- OK, I'm on it. - As I go through.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Any card you want, just point at it. This one?

0:04:25 > 0:04:27- Yeah.- You sure?- Yeah.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30- OK, take your card, have a look at it. It's all right.- I'm like...

0:04:30 > 0:04:33- I kind of caught a little glimpse of it, it's all right.- No, you didn't.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Yes, I did, it's the king of hearts.

0:04:34 > 0:04:40I've got a little sticker here, which we will put on.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42What I'm going to do, I'm going to write down king of hearts

0:04:42 > 0:04:43on the back of it.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48So that way we know it's your card whichever way you look at it.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52OK, so from the front and from the back it will be the king of hearts.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55So, king of hearts, that's your card, OK? That's yours.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57So, as you've got your card,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00- you're going to pose for a couple of photographs for me.- OK.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02So if you could stand right here on our spot here,

0:05:02 > 0:05:03hold it out just like that.

0:05:03 > 0:05:04All right.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09She's done this before. That's it.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13Bit more. Oh, look, see. One more.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17Great. You can follow me over here and we're going to use the lights

0:05:17 > 0:05:20so you can see your card, king of hearts, right in...

0:05:20 > 0:05:22We can see it, actually, quite clearly through the light.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25It's kind of weird - you can see all the ink.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29It says king of hearts, right? Which is yours, which we wrote down.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Watch the writing, come close, look. Watch.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- What?- The more you concentrate,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39the more the writing will slowly start to disappear.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Oh, my goodness.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46But do you know the reason it says "gone"?

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Because, it completely has gone.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55That's it, the only real evidence of your card existing

0:05:55 > 0:05:58is in the photograph and that's the great thing about taking photos.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00You can, you know, look back on 'em.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02I'm going to get one of the photos up to the screen.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05This is so weird. I'm scared now, I'm not going to lie.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09Let's see how good my photography work... Oh! Boom!

0:06:09 > 0:06:12- I am sick.- No, that's good. Strong. Strong.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14- Blue steel.- That is good.- Yeah.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18So, that's the only real evidence of your card actually existing

0:06:18 > 0:06:19in the photograph now.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22- OK, cos that was the card you picked, right?- Yeah.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25So watch, I'm going to do something, check this out.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31If I just put my hand up like this, come closer, guys, so you can see.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Watch.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36I think I can get it, just...right...

0:06:39 > 0:06:43- I can take it out of the screen. - No!- What?- What you doing?

0:06:43 > 0:06:46And it's backed with the king of hearts all normal on the back

0:06:46 > 0:06:48from the beginning.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51How it all looked from when we first originally wrote down.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54- What have you done? - Show those guys.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58What have you done?

0:07:00 > 0:07:02No, that is too weird.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05'So dodgy. I'm just not sure of anything any more.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- 'I hate the idea of just things disappearing, like...- Yeah.'

0:07:08 > 0:07:10But disappearing in that way is too weird.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12I just can't even get my head around it.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15There's millions of people at home now scratching at their television

0:07:15 > 0:07:18trying to pull me out the screen, but they ain't getting it.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21You ain't pulling me out the screen.

0:07:21 > 0:07:22Apart from you.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Please stop flirting with the viewers, Ben.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27So how did Damien's trick go down with the other magicians?

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Sure, it was a card trick

0:07:29 > 0:07:32but I thought it was a really flashy one, I'll give it a seven.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35It was like trick photography but live and so it gets...

0:07:35 > 0:07:37an eight.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40I think Damien's trick was great so I'm going to give it...

0:07:43 > 0:07:44..eight.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Beautiful people, beautiful trick...

0:07:47 > 0:07:48Eight.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51So that's a massive 31 for Damien.

0:07:51 > 0:07:52It's a great score

0:07:52 > 0:07:54but will it be enough?

0:07:55 > 0:08:00Next up it's mind-reader Chris with some typically geeky gadget magic.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02The internet is my gadget of choice, I love the internet.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04I do hope he's cleared his history

0:08:04 > 0:08:06before showing us what's on that screen.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07I don't think anyone's tried mind reading

0:08:07 > 0:08:10over the internet before and I'm not sure whether it's going to work

0:08:10 > 0:08:12but if it does, I think it'll be pretty good.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14And today Chris is reading two minds,

0:08:14 > 0:08:16which by my calculations makes it doubly impressive.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Yes, it's internet sensations and Radio 1 DJ's Dan and Phil.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23- Hello!- Hi, Chris.- Hi, Chris.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Well, thank you for joining me. So, first things first.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Take off your clothes.

0:08:27 > 0:08:28Um, this is...

0:08:28 > 0:08:31I wasn't aware it would be that kind of magic trick.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34I'm actually naked, these clothes are tattooed onto me.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37- What is behind you?- Well...- A towel?

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Yeah, I've had to cover this up,

0:08:38 > 0:08:41this is my I love Dan and Phil poster, didn't want to freak you out.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43- Oh, obviously.- Yeah.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44Yeah, that makes sense, thanks.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46So, you should've been sent a big box of stuff,

0:08:46 > 0:08:47do you have a big box of stuff?

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- Yes.- We have a big box.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- It says uh, "Do not open until Chris tells you."- Oh.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54- So we won't do that.- Good.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57So I'm going to do a personality test with you

0:08:57 > 0:09:00and since this is the BBC, I have a generic magazine.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02- Nice.- Oh, nice, you made the front cover.

0:09:02 > 0:09:03- Yeah, I know. - I'm really happy for you.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Also, this is a girl's magazine, so you're going to do

0:09:06 > 0:09:09a female personality test to get in touch with your feminine side.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Good, it's probably going to be more accurate then. It's fine.

0:09:11 > 0:09:12Sounds good to me.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Dan, this is your personality test.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Question one - the day before your holiday begins,

0:09:18 > 0:09:23- an important work project lands on your desk, what do you do?- OK.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25A - tell your boss, "No can do."

0:09:25 > 0:09:27B - cancel the trip.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Or C - work hard until the last minute and then arrange for cover.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34A, you're an A - tell your boss, "No can do."

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Out of interest where would you be going on holiday?

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Japan.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Good. Question two for you.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40So, while shopping, Dan,

0:09:40 > 0:09:43you and a friend spot a top that you both love,

0:09:43 > 0:09:47but there's only one left, do you let her have it?

0:09:48 > 0:09:50A - yeah, it's not worth fighting over.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53B - hell, no, you'll tear it out of her hands.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Or C - you'll try and steer her towards another top.

0:09:56 > 0:09:57A, B or C?

0:09:57 > 0:09:59I like how insidious option C is,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02cos you're kind of getting what you want but not in a direct way,

0:10:02 > 0:10:03that's me.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Good, excellent, so that's C.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Assuming it was a top that you two fought over,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09I'm imagining it would be a T-shirt,

0:10:09 > 0:10:11what would be the one thing printed on the T-shirt?

0:10:11 > 0:10:15- Robot.- Robot it is. OK, robot on your T-shirt, good to know.- Yep.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19- When you hear about a great job that your college roommate has got...- OK.

0:10:19 > 0:10:24- ..do you think, "I know there's a great job out there for me too?"- OK.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28B - wow, I wish I could land a position like that.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Or C - just wait, I'm going to get a better one.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35I don't like C's attitude, do you? That's...calm down.

0:10:35 > 0:10:36I'm going to go with A.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39A - I know there's a great job out there for me too.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40- Yeah.- Somewhere.

0:10:40 > 0:10:41Full of positivity.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Right, so, here are the answers.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49- So number 1 you answered A, what are your scores for that?- Five.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52For two, you answered C.

0:10:52 > 0:10:53And that gives me 15.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- Very nice. And for three you answered A.- Ten.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58- Ten.- Ten.- Jesus. OK.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Do you want to add that up? What did you get?

0:11:00 > 0:11:03- 30!- 30.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06OK, if you scored between 25 and 35, it says,

0:11:06 > 0:11:10"Yes, you have ambitions and work to reach them.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14"That makes you likely to succeed and likeable."

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- Does that sound like you? - It's like the happy ending.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20- You scored 30 in total, correct? - 30, yeah.

0:11:20 > 0:11:26And your scores were five, 15 and ten, yeah?

0:11:26 > 0:11:28- Yeah.- Total of 30 and succeed and likeable.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30- You've got a box of stuff, yeah? - Yeah.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33This arrived at your flat at 6am this morning, yeah?

0:11:33 > 0:11:37It did, it woke me up. Destroying the house.

0:11:37 > 0:11:38Go!

0:11:38 > 0:11:40There's a mouse mat, what's on that?

0:11:40 > 0:11:41Five, 15 and ten!

0:11:44 > 0:11:47And a mug with 30.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50And the top of the CD box, look at the top of the CD box.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52Success and likable.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54Oh, my God, what?

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- Yes.- He's a demon. - But there's more.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02If I take it off you'll see - succeed and likable,

0:12:02 > 0:12:0730, five, 15 and ten and also this tiny bit here

0:12:07 > 0:12:11if you can see it - in Japan, I will wear a robot T-shirt.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13- No.- Shut up.- No.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15Can you see it?

0:12:15 > 0:12:17My mind has just imploded,

0:12:17 > 0:12:19is there a little bit of brain leaking out of my ear?

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- Yeah, it's just leaking out of your ear.- Look.- A torrent.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23To me, this was the perfect form of gadget,

0:12:23 > 0:12:26it involved computers and the internet. Amazing.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28- He's a demon. - He sold his soul, Phil.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- PHIL WHISPERS - He's a demon.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32We can be impressed by it but at the end of his life,

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- he's the one that's going to pay for it.- Yeah.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36But what did the other magicians make of Chris'

0:12:36 > 0:12:38online personality prediction?

0:12:38 > 0:12:40I enjoyed the webcam trick. I'm going to give it a...

0:12:44 > 0:12:46I loved Chris' trick and so it gets...

0:12:46 > 0:12:48a seven.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50I give it...a seven.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51I'm going to give it a...

0:12:55 > 0:12:57So, mind-reader Chris scores 28

0:12:57 > 0:12:59leaving him an obvious candidate

0:12:59 > 0:13:00to be a human barbecue.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02Anyone fancy a skinny wiener?

0:13:03 > 0:13:07Next, it's Ben who's raided the BBC's costume drama department

0:13:07 > 0:13:09and is taking us back to the early days of magical performance

0:13:09 > 0:13:12to demonstrate his gadget.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14I think the other magicians will be impressed.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17I think, I don't know how they'll deal with being

0:13:17 > 0:13:19in this old-fashioned space, they're a bit modern, aren't they?

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Damien the magician like, "Bzzz, I'm here in the music hall."

0:13:22 > 0:13:25I think he's confused Damien with a house fly.

0:13:25 > 0:13:26So, hello, everybody.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28So you're probably wondering why

0:13:28 > 0:13:30I've brought you here to this old theatre.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32In fact this is the oldest music hall in the world.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Now, the reason why I brought you here is because I want to show you

0:13:35 > 0:13:37an invention created almost 200 years ago

0:13:37 > 0:13:40by a madman genius French magician called Robert Houdin.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41- What's your name, sorry?- Lily.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Lily. Nice to meet you, Lily, I'm Ben.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- Could I borrow that ring?- Hm-mm.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47I will treat it very nicely, I promise.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51I'm going to wrap Lily's ring inside this pocket handkerchief.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53Lily, will you just feel through there,

0:13:53 > 0:13:55check that the ring really is inside? Yeah?

0:13:55 > 0:13:59I'm going to leave it inside this oil lamp chimney

0:13:59 > 0:14:05which will isolate it and the handkerchief inside here.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10Now, because it's inside this piece of glass,

0:14:10 > 0:14:13you know that I can't easily access it.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15I don't want you to blink or you'll miss this.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17Three, two, one.

0:14:18 > 0:14:25And the handkerchief and ring vanish completely from inside the glass.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29Now, this tree here is a piece of clockwork.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33It uses coiled springs and twisted metal to recreate nature.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37Now, the first thing that happens is the tree begins to blossom.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42- What?- Growing orange blossom.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46And after the tree has blossomed, oranges begin to grow.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Starting small and slowly growing bigger.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52I think it's quite beautiful.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58I'm going to remove one of these oranges

0:14:58 > 0:15:01so that you can see that this is a real orange

0:15:01 > 0:15:03and not some kind of clockwork orange,

0:15:03 > 0:15:07but a real orange with juice and pips.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10And in the final stage of this strange piece,

0:15:10 > 0:15:13the orange at the top divides itself.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18And two mechanical butterflies start to flap their wings

0:15:18 > 0:15:22and fly from inside the centre and they carry between them...

0:15:22 > 0:15:24a handkerchief.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27And tied in the centre of the handkerchief...

0:15:27 > 0:15:28is a ring.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38And can you confirm for me, Lily, that this is your ring

0:15:38 > 0:15:41- having just grown off a mechanical tree, it is?- Yeah.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43It's still as amazing now as it ever was.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51That was amazing. I've not seen anything like that before.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Oh, I think it was awesome.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56The oranges growing from the tree, that was dope.

0:15:56 > 0:15:57I thought it was amazing.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00I absolutely loved every minute of it, it was so beautiful.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03So Jasz liked it and it was a hit with the audience

0:16:03 > 0:16:05but how do the other magicians feel?

0:16:05 > 0:16:06A beautiful bit of magic,

0:16:06 > 0:16:08strong seven.

0:16:08 > 0:16:09I give him...

0:16:09 > 0:16:10an eight.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12I'm going to give it a...

0:16:15 > 0:16:17I'm giving Ben...

0:16:19 > 0:16:20..seven

0:16:22 > 0:16:23So, Ben's fruity performance

0:16:23 > 0:16:24scores an impressive 30

0:16:24 > 0:16:26leaving him safe

0:16:26 > 0:16:27from the killer trick,

0:16:27 > 0:16:29which promises to Taser the lowest scoring magician

0:16:29 > 0:16:32with a million volts of electricity.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Next, let's see how Jasz gets on.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39She's trying to persuade shoppers to buy a fake gadget

0:16:39 > 0:16:41they just can't live without.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43She's being followed by hidden cameras

0:16:43 > 0:16:44and a few discreet

0:16:44 > 0:16:46undercover magicians.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48There they are.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49I've got the ultimate gadget here,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52so I'm...I'm in with a good chance of winning this week's theme

0:16:52 > 0:16:57because it is the biggest gadget, I think, out of all of the tricks.

0:16:57 > 0:17:03Big and small is exactly what the Resize 9000 promises to give you.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05According to Jasz, this machine can work miracles growing or

0:17:05 > 0:17:07shrinking anything you choose.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09I once bought a pump from the internet that promised

0:17:09 > 0:17:10a similar service.

0:17:10 > 0:17:11Sadly, it didn't work.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14Have you heard of the Resize 9000?

0:17:14 > 0:17:15- BOTH:- No.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17- Brilliant. So, the Resize 9000, have you heard of it?- No.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20I see you've got bags there and things, yeah?

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- And they're quite bulky, aren't they? BOTH:- Yeah.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24This is where the Resize 9000 comes in

0:17:24 > 0:17:26and solves all your bulk problems.

0:17:26 > 0:17:27I'm going to show you what I mean.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32If I take this apple and I pop it inside the Resize 9000,

0:17:32 > 0:17:33just like so.

0:17:35 > 0:17:36So it's in there.

0:17:36 > 0:17:37Yep.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39And we're just going to count down five seconds.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44Five, four, three, two, one.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46BELL DINGS Hear the ding

0:17:46 > 0:17:48and it's done it's thing!

0:17:48 > 0:17:51THEY LAUGH We look inside now...

0:17:51 > 0:17:53The apple is a fraction of the size.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56If you need your fruit that small, just buy a grape.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59Now, for anyone who actually believes Jasz's sales patter,

0:17:59 > 0:18:01let's be clear - this machine is a magic prop,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03you cannot buy it in the shops, obviously.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05But it does look pretty convincing.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Can I borrow your watch?

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Yes.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10Thank you very much.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14So, now, if I put your watch inside the Resize 9000,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16like so.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Oddly enough, I never thought of a watch as a huge, exhausting

0:18:19 > 0:18:20thing to lug about, but never mind.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23..two, one. BELL DINGS

0:18:23 > 0:18:24Hear the ding and it's done it's thing.

0:18:24 > 0:18:30If I look inside now, your watch is a fraction of the size.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32This is what's so good about it.

0:18:32 > 0:18:39It means, in my handbag, I can now pack a change of clothes.

0:18:39 > 0:18:40It's a bit skimpy.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42I can wear that at the weekend.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Also got my...my phone.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Good luck playing Candy Crush on that.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50I can pack the manual for the Resize 9000.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53So I'm going to make the manual larger again.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57If I pop it back inside the Resize 9000, just like so.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00And it's going to take more time, so I need more power,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03so we're just going to have to wait until we hear the ding, OK?

0:19:03 > 0:19:06She's really trying to make this catchphrase a thing, isn't she?

0:19:06 > 0:19:07BELL DINGS Hey!

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Hear the ding and it's done it's thing.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11- There it is. - Shall we have a look inside now?

0:19:11 > 0:19:16And we've got the Resize 9000 full size.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20Yeah, but what happens if you put a Resize 9000 inside a Resize 9000?

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Huh? Huh? Ah, we'll never know.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24I did not expect that. I was just...

0:19:24 > 0:19:26- Definitely the sales pitch.- Yeah. - I thought...yeah, I thought

0:19:26 > 0:19:29- I was taking home a home appliance. - Ten-minute sales pitch.

0:19:29 > 0:19:30It looks like they're sold.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33It was really good, I don't actually know how she...done it.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36The Resizer 9000, finally I got to see it in real life.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38I've been looking on the infomercials for ages

0:19:38 > 0:19:40and it was great to see it do its job.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Looks like a microwave up close, though, doesn't it?

0:19:42 > 0:19:43Don't spoil it, Damien.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46So, what do the magicians think of Jasz's gadget trick?

0:19:46 > 0:19:48It was a lot of fun

0:19:48 > 0:19:49but not really magical enough.

0:19:49 > 0:19:50A six.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53She gets a tiny little six.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56This time, I've gone for...

0:19:56 > 0:19:58a seven.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01The Resize 9000, it wasn't a gadget.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04Weren't as bad as a three, so it's going to get a five.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06So, Jasz gets 24,

0:20:06 > 0:20:07a weak performance that makes her

0:20:07 > 0:20:08the prime candidate

0:20:08 > 0:20:10for this week's killer trick.

0:20:12 > 0:20:13Next to perform is Dee

0:20:13 > 0:20:16and, worryingly, he's brought a guitar along.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18This week's episode, the theme is gadgets.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21So I've brought from home some of my favourite gadgets,

0:20:21 > 0:20:23my electric guitar and my amplifier.

0:20:23 > 0:20:24'I want to do this trick.'

0:20:24 > 0:20:26That's the main thing for me is, you know,

0:20:26 > 0:20:30to do something that, uh,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33you know, shows my love for music as well as magic.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37I'm not much of a guitarist but I like to...I like to play.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40I find it's useful to know how to strum a few chords

0:20:40 > 0:20:43when composing music with my band to get some ideas across.

0:20:43 > 0:20:44Yeah.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47When it comes to writing music, my favourite thing in the world is

0:20:47 > 0:20:52to go back to a suitably gothic feather quill, ink and sheet music.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55So, I'm going to get you to think of a song that you'd like me

0:20:55 > 0:20:56to try and play for you today.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Have you got one?

0:20:58 > 0:21:01- Right, got one.- Yeah? Actually, I'll get you to change your mind.

0:21:01 > 0:21:02OK.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05- And change your mind one last time. - Right.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07So you've now got a song in mind that you didn't know that you

0:21:07 > 0:21:10were going to think of before you stepped through these doors.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13So, for the first time, what is the song?

0:21:13 > 0:21:14Umbrella by Rihanna.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16One of Dee's favourites.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18OK, um...

0:21:18 > 0:21:21It's not my usual style.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26Has that song even got any guitars in it?

0:21:26 > 0:21:27I tell you what, I've got a better idea.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29We'll use...

0:21:29 > 0:21:32we'll use this tray and we'll use this ink.

0:21:34 > 0:21:39You know sound travels in waves, like, vibrations?

0:21:39 > 0:21:40Yeah.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43We're going to try and use this ink to catch visually

0:21:43 > 0:21:45what those vibrations look like.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48- I'm going to get you to keep that song in the front of your mind...- OK.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50..and I want you to place your hand on the amplifier.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53I want you to imagine the thought of that song

0:21:53 > 0:21:55travelling down your arm,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57through the amplifier, into the ink.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59I'm going to turn it up to 11.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14MUSIC DROWNS OUT SPEECH

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Look at that, a shape of an umbrella has formed in the ink.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19There we go. See, it's starting to bubble up.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Can you see that? It's like the shape of an umbrella.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24What the fuck?

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Thank goodness she didn't think of the Thong Song.

0:22:29 > 0:22:30Oh, my God.

0:22:32 > 0:22:33We're not going to stop there.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36Let's make use of this sheet music.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Look, you can see that every page is blank.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41- Uh-huh.- Mm-hm.

0:22:41 > 0:22:46I'm going to bend this up slightly and try and catch the ink inside.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51Watch close.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58- You see, it doesn't fall out at the bottom.- Yeah, it didn't.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00That's weird.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02THEY LAUGH

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Not only that, if we turn it upside down...

0:23:06 > 0:23:08..it also doesn't fall out at the top.

0:23:10 > 0:23:11That's because the ink has now become

0:23:11 > 0:23:13embedded in the paper...

0:23:15 > 0:23:19..in the shape of Umbrella by Rihanna.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22- What the actual fu...? - THEY LAUGH

0:23:22 > 0:23:27"Umbrella, umbrella, umbrella, umbrella, umbrella,"

0:23:27 > 0:23:29right through to the end.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Oh, that is freaky. That is freaky.

0:23:35 > 0:23:36That was freaky.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39Yeah, it was weird. Like, really strange.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41THEY LAUGH

0:23:41 > 0:23:43I'm just trying to figure out, like, what he's...

0:23:43 > 0:23:46- what...how...what...how it happened. - What he did, how did it do it?

0:23:46 > 0:23:48- How he went about that. - Yeah, that was good.

0:23:48 > 0:23:52I noticed that, um, Dee's magic spelling skills

0:23:52 > 0:23:55aren't up to scratch, cos he'd spelt Umbrella wrong on the sheet music.

0:23:55 > 0:23:56Don't blame him, blame the ink.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58I like the way that Dee took heavy metal,

0:23:58 > 0:24:03and an electric guitar, and a quill, and a cowboy hat,

0:24:03 > 0:24:05and pinned them all together under the same 'umbrella'.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08No! Have it. Take it, it's yours.

0:24:08 > 0:24:09JASZ LAUGHS

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Oh, good lord.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14So, what do the other magicians make of Dee's brolly busking performance?

0:24:14 > 0:24:16Dee's trick lacked spark.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Gets a six.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22I'm going to give him...

0:24:22 > 0:24:23a six.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25I loved it, so I'm going to give it...

0:24:29 > 0:24:32Dee referencing Rihanna's Umbrella, what's not to like?

0:24:32 > 0:24:33# 'Ella, 'ella. #

0:24:33 > 0:24:35Seven, 'ella.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38That is 27 for Dee and his guitar,

0:24:38 > 0:24:39by no means the best

0:24:39 > 0:24:41but certainly not the worst.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43So, we know that he is in the clear

0:24:43 > 0:24:45from the killer trick.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49It's time to let the magicians know who's won.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55- Damien!- Boo ya!

0:24:55 > 0:24:56Champion!

0:24:56 > 0:24:58Paper cuts, God! The paper cuts!

0:24:58 > 0:25:00He's taken it modestly.

0:25:00 > 0:25:01Yes!

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Congratulations.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07The magician facing the electroshock killer trick is...

0:25:07 > 0:25:10It's Jasz! Oh, no!

0:25:10 > 0:25:13- Oh, my God.- I'm going to die!

0:25:13 > 0:25:17You will be at the end of hundreds of thousands of volts

0:25:17 > 0:25:19and, as the winner, Damien gets to throw the switch.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22- DAMIEN LAUGHS - Yes!- Ooh!

0:25:22 > 0:25:23It's really going to hurt.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25It might be a nice tingling sensation.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27I don't think it's going to be.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30So, it's time for Jasz to face this week's killer trick.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33She needs to find a way to stay alive as electrical currents

0:25:33 > 0:25:36strong enough to fry, I don't know, an army of elephants

0:25:36 > 0:25:38is passed through her body.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- CURRENTS ZAP - Fucking hell.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44- Jasz.- That's fucking terrifying.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47I would say I'm a little bit of an adrenaline junkie, so this trick

0:25:47 > 0:25:50excites me quite a lot even though I'm quite nervous at the prospect

0:25:50 > 0:25:53of being struck by, you know, what is essentially lightening.

0:25:53 > 0:25:58Jasz, today, will be hit with one million volts.

0:25:58 > 0:26:03Now, usually, in a plug socket there's 240 volts,

0:26:03 > 0:26:07so one million, I assume, is life-ending.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10We've got some well-synchronised electricians on hand

0:26:10 > 0:26:12just in case things go wrong

0:26:12 > 0:26:16and a scientist to explain things and put Jasz very much at ease.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19All right, so a million volts is the kind of voltage

0:26:19 > 0:26:21they use in the national grid.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23So if you get too near that, it's a kind of spark you might see

0:26:23 > 0:26:24just before you died.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Wow.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Would it, like, you know, blow her into pieces?

0:26:29 > 0:26:33Uh, it would have a serious effect on her, I think it's fair to say.

0:26:33 > 0:26:34Calming words.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Jasz has only one hope for staying safe.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40What we've got here is a thing called a Faraday cage,

0:26:40 > 0:26:43and it looks a bit like a mosquito net but it's actually...

0:26:43 > 0:26:44I wear tights thicker than that.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47The crucial thing about this is it's actually made of stainless steel.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50It looks like material but it's actually stainless steel.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53There are some scientists who, although they know electricity

0:26:53 > 0:26:55and the laws, will still not get in there.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57So, I think you're pretty brave.

0:26:57 > 0:26:58Are you serious?

0:26:58 > 0:27:00- So, let's get you in the cage. - All right.

0:27:01 > 0:27:02So...

0:27:02 > 0:27:05OK, then, let's roll this giant condom over Jasz

0:27:05 > 0:27:07and hope it offers maximum protection.

0:27:11 > 0:27:12I'm not feeling very safe, guys.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20It's time to flip the switch.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- SHE SCREAMS - Bloody hell!

0:27:30 > 0:27:34CURRENTS ZAP

0:27:34 > 0:27:35SHE SCREAMS

0:27:37 > 0:27:38Fuck that shit!

0:27:40 > 0:27:43HE LAUGHS

0:27:43 > 0:27:44SHE SHRIEKS

0:27:44 > 0:27:47I've just noticed, there is a tiny hole in this thing.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50CURRENTS ZAP AND SHE SHRIEKS

0:27:53 > 0:27:56- Is it scary?- Yeah. That is so fucking scary.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06- I think I wet myself. - SHE LAUGHS

0:28:07 > 0:28:09# Danger, danger

0:28:09 > 0:28:11# High voltage

0:28:11 > 0:28:13# When we touch

0:28:13 > 0:28:15# And when we kiss

0:28:15 > 0:28:17# Danger, danger

0:28:17 > 0:28:19# High voltage

0:28:19 > 0:28:20# When we touch

0:28:20 > 0:28:21# When we kiss

0:28:21 > 0:28:22# When we touch

0:28:22 > 0:28:24# When we kiss... #
