0:12:49 > 0:12:53Jane Austen, George Eliot, and the Bronte sisters -

0:12:53 > 0:12:56but I think Mrs Gaskell deserves a place amongst them.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04In those days, women writers were frowned upon,

0:13:04 > 0:13:09and people like George Eliot had to actually write under a pen name -

0:13:09 > 0:13:11she was really Mary Ann Evans.

0:13:11 > 0:13:16But Mrs Gaskell, I feel, was very courageous in her writing.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18She brings to light a lot of subjects

0:13:18 > 0:13:21which women in particular were not supposed to talk about at the time.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26It was a real thrill to be able to see the actual manuscript

0:13:26 > 0:13:28of The Life Of Charlotte Bronte,

0:13:28 > 0:13:31and to think that this was Mrs Gaskell's own hand

0:13:31 > 0:13:34that had written it - all her crossings out and alterations.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41It's quite something to see this actual manuscript in all its glory.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47of Mrs Gaskell's work on television.
