0:00:02 > 0:00:05Fighting robots represent probably one of the biggest challenges

0:00:05 > 0:00:08in engineering because there is no perfect design.

0:00:12 > 0:00:1640 robot-fighting teams are about to take on one of the most

0:00:16 > 0:00:19intense engineering challenges in the world.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Advice I'd give to roboteers entering the arena is

0:00:22 > 0:00:24don't panic and try not to die.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31To design, build and battle heavyweight fighting robots

0:00:31 > 0:00:33to compete for the ultimate prize.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Through chaotic group battles and fierce head-to-heads,

0:00:42 > 0:00:46new and veteran teams of robot engineers must push their

0:00:46 > 0:00:48reinforced war machines to the limit.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Their robots are harder, faster, stronger,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54designed for one thing -

0:00:54 > 0:00:57total destruction in pursuit of victory.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:04 > 0:01:05Roboteers, stand by.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Welcome to Robot Wars.

0:01:14 > 0:01:1840 teams of brilliant home-made machines hand-built over months,

0:01:18 > 0:01:22even years, only to be destroyed in seconds for our entertainment.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26And it's not just sparks that will fly in our bulletproof arena,

0:01:26 > 0:01:29it's armed with an arsenal of hazards to launch, spike,

0:01:29 > 0:01:30or even just set fire to them.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33And if they make it past all of that, there's still these -

0:01:33 > 0:01:35the house robots!

0:01:35 > 0:01:38CHEERING, APPLAUSE AND WHISTLING

0:01:39 > 0:01:42But they're not just doing it for the love of engineering.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46One amazing machine will become the new Robot Wars Champion.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55In the last heat, Aftershock made the competition quake as its

0:01:55 > 0:01:58vertical spinner whipped itself a place in the Grand Final.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05Tonight, eight more teams will have to survive two group battles.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09The four winning robots will fight for points in the head-to-heads,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13with three points for a win and two points for a judges' decision.

0:02:13 > 0:02:18The two highest-scoring robots will go through to tonight's final.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Let's meet the teams in our first group battle.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25They are Hobgoblin, Behemoth, Cobra and Eruption.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Cobra have a robot designed to crush opponents and inflict maximum

0:02:34 > 0:02:37damage by ramming them into the arena side wall,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40or, of course, one of those furious house robots.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Do you want to talk me through the weapon?

0:02:43 > 0:02:46- Well, it's basically very simple. We have the hat.- Yeah.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50It's the Cobra hat. So, er, it's down at the moment for safety.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53- It comes up all the way, we can grab the opponents...- OK.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55- ..and we take them for a spin. - And crush them.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58- Yes, crush them and take them for a spin.- OK, toy with them.- Yeah.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02- Please give it up for Cobra. Good luck, lads.- Thank you.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Eruption was heavily damaged by spinner PP3D last series.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14Since then, they've adapted it to the cold conditions of the arena

0:03:14 > 0:03:16to maximise their flip power.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- We've even got a new weapon now. - Oh, what's the new weapon?

0:03:21 > 0:03:23We've got our spinner on the top...

0:03:23 > 0:03:26You've even got a spinner? You've got a combined spinner and flipper?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Well, it's more like a nibbler, I think, but we hope to get

0:03:29 > 0:03:33the robots on there, have a nibble at them, then throw them out.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36OK, ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Eruption!

0:03:36 > 0:03:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:03:44 > 0:03:48Built and designed by 19-year-old team captain Harry,

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Hobgoblin has a unique weapon system.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57- The weapon is this beater on the front, which spins up like that.- OK.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59It should take chunks out of other robots.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02So what are your ideal opponents?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Erm, very flat, boxy things - no wedges, no flippers.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Zero flippers?

0:04:07 > 0:04:11- Can you self-right? - Erm, in theory, yes. Never tested.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13- Good luck.- Cheers. We'll need it.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22One of Robot Wars' most seasoned competitors,

0:04:22 > 0:04:25the Behemoth boys are back with their eye on the title

0:04:25 > 0:04:27and a range of new interchangeable scoops.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32What's this I see in front of me here?

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Yeah, we've got a few different attachments for this year.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37The new one here, which is mainly for horizontal spinners -

0:04:37 > 0:04:40as Carbide last year, this would help us cos it's got the angles.

0:04:40 > 0:04:41How thick is the protection here?

0:04:41 > 0:04:43This is what you're battling...

0:04:43 > 0:04:45- This is actually 0.12mm thick. - Right, OK.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49How many blows from a spinner going full speed do you think it'll take?

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Well, hopefully lots, but let's wait and see.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54Give it up for Behemoth, ladies and gentlemen!

0:04:57 > 0:04:59It's time for the first group battle.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02For many roboteers, this is the first time they'll see their

0:05:02 > 0:05:07own upgraded, overhauled, and often newly built robots at full power.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11To oversee this battle, our very own Jonathan Pearce.

0:05:13 > 0:05:14Thanks very much, Dara and Angela.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Who will survive the proving grounds of the group battles?

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Only two of these competitors can progress to the head-to-heads.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23They'll do so by dodging the arena hazards...

0:05:23 > 0:05:25and the house robots,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28who this series can be unleashed from their CPZs for ten seconds by

0:05:28 > 0:05:30competitors pressing the pit button

0:05:30 > 0:05:32in a new hazard I like to call rogue house robots.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Our three-minute battle is presided over by our judging panel -

0:05:35 > 0:05:38head judge Professor Noel Sharkey, Dr Lucy Rogers,

0:05:38 > 0:05:39and Sethu Vijayakumar.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42It goes to the judges if competitors are unable to KO their opponents

0:05:42 > 0:05:45by flipping them out, sending them into

0:05:45 > 0:05:49the Pit of Oblivion, or by simply smashing them into submission.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54From Belgium, Cobra.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Cobra's crusher has a powerful four tonnes of crush in its jaws

0:05:59 > 0:06:01that can bend 10mm steel.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04It's one of the quickest robots in the competition as well.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07When he's not building robots, team captain Marco Van Hek sells fish!

0:06:07 > 0:06:10From Warrington, Eruption.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Team captain Michael has built and designed this robot with dad Adrian.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Eruption's armour has been upgraded with angled,

0:06:17 > 0:06:20hardened steel side-pods to deflect spinner attacks.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22The team say this year their plan is to flip robots out of the arena,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25and with a robot that can flip over 1,000kg,

0:06:25 > 0:06:27that's a real possibility.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29From Surrey, Hobgoblin.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Hobgoblin's primary weapon spins at 2,500rpm

0:06:34 > 0:06:36with a tip speed of 80mph.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39The drive power comes from two 500W lawnmower motors.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42It's the first heavyweight beater robot to compete in Robot Wars.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47Will this new-blood robot be able to hand out old-school beatings?

0:06:47 > 0:06:50From Hemel Hempstead, Behemoth.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Robot Wars veterans return with their six-wheeled mini-bulldozer.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Behemoth has the ability to pull 1.5 tonnes at a speed of 15mph.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Carbide knocked them out last series. With their upgraded buckets,

0:07:02 > 0:07:05will they have a shot at the championship this time?

0:07:05 > 0:07:07And the house robot, for the first time tonight,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10the robotic commander-in-chief.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13It's Sir Killalot!

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Roboteers, stand by.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27The teams are in the control booths.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29It's battle time!

0:07:29 > 0:07:33Three, two, one...

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Activate!

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Can Hobgoblin's egg beater scramble them out there?

0:07:39 > 0:07:43Behemoth dancing, a little bit of prancing around...

0:07:43 > 0:07:46And pushing there as well on Cobra.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Eruption being chased across the floor by Behemoth

0:07:50 > 0:07:52with the mighty scoop.

0:07:54 > 0:07:55Hobgoblin in a little bit of trouble.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Behemoth, you can see the power there of the scoop,

0:07:58 > 0:08:00lifting Eruption up into the air!

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Eruption can get up to 12.5mph. It's just over that, actually.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07Has speed to get away.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11Cobra using max speed, but sent under the Floor Flipper!

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Oh-ho-ho, a tumble!

0:08:13 > 0:08:14JONATHAN LAUGHS

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Little movement from Hobgoblin at the moment, but this is a good...

0:08:18 > 0:08:22a good contest out there between Behemoth, Eruption and Cobra.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Cobra between the two of them.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Eruption looks a good machine here,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29Hobgoblin has driven straight into the wall, I think.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31No, we're gone.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Behemoth think they've done enough.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37They might try and stay out of trouble now.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Pit release...

0:08:38 > 0:08:42And, yes, it will mean this time the Dial Of Doom has gone left.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Down goes the pit.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48And Cobra have got themselves too tight with Killalot,

0:08:48 > 0:08:50and they've done so well, Cobra!

0:08:54 > 0:08:56Oh, Behemoth on its side!

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Cobra's OK, live to fight another day after the pinchers of Killalot!

0:09:02 > 0:09:03Oh, this is a good battle, isn't it?

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Three-way tussle, only two can go through.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09I like the look of Eruption!

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Cobra needs to self-right,

0:09:12 > 0:09:14but on the Floor Spikes...

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Eruption just dodging those spikes.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Behemoth mighty, huge in the middle.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25Sort of just controlling its own urges to get involved,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28leaving Eruption to do the damage on Cobra.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Can't see.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34Behemoth has gone into that area now to try maybe and flip Eruption.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Couldn't do so.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Eruption turned and got away using good speed there, good technique.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Now perhaps they can flip Cobra.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44In comes Behemoth, did a mighty shove with that

0:09:44 > 0:09:477mm grade five titanium lifting scoop!

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Again, all the pressure on Cobra.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Double attack, all double Dutch for the Cobra boys.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02And Cobra coming back on the attack on Behemoth!

0:10:02 > 0:10:04They've got some spirit, the Cobra team!

0:10:07 > 0:10:11They've got some venom in those fangs!

0:10:14 > 0:10:17But Behemoth wants to go in for the kill.

0:10:17 > 0:10:22This is a really good group battle, one of the best we've seen!

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Oh, flip! Tried to lift Cobra up and over!

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Good armament on Cobra, hardened steel!

0:10:30 > 0:10:34It's withstood so much, and they're still in there fighting.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36- Taking on Eruption... - KLAXON BLARES

0:10:36 > 0:10:39- Oh, cease is called! Wow, that was terrific.- Well done.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Really enjoyed that.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Very unusual for a group battle to go to the judges,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50but this one will, and they were all very good in their own way.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Cobra took some punishment but seemed to be OK.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Off the Floor Flipper, look at it!

0:10:55 > 0:10:59I just wonder whether this moment will count against Cobra.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01I'm seeing very nervous faces here,

0:11:01 > 0:11:03because that didn't end definitely.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05And you're probably both wondering now,

0:11:05 > 0:11:07what's the story with Cobra and yourselves?

0:11:07 > 0:11:10And this is the first time there's ever been a judges' decision

0:11:10 > 0:11:13in a group battle since we've started doing this show anyway,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16so it's all very tense. Isn't it very tense?

0:11:16 > 0:11:18You'd love me to break the tension, wouldn't you?

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Both teams are through. Cobra got knocked out.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Congratulations to Behemoth and to Eruption.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- Well done.- Well done.- Well done. - Well done, congratulations.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- Let me talk to you, though, about how that went.- Yes.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Because that could've actually been very tight.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35I mean, I know poor old Cobra bore the brunt of just about

0:11:35 > 0:11:36everything that could've happened.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Man, that was a ding-dong battle for the entire thing!

0:11:38 > 0:11:40- How do you think it went? - It went well.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42At one point it looked like we'd lost a rear chain,

0:11:42 > 0:11:44so that's why I was having a bit of a problem.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46But as soon as I spat that chain back out again I was OK.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49Really, so you actually managed to ride out losing

0:11:49 > 0:11:50a chain on one of your wheels?

0:11:50 > 0:11:52Yeah, there was a lot of redundancy on the drive system, so...

0:11:52 > 0:11:54Yes, six-wheel drive, so...

0:11:54 > 0:11:56Wow, there we go, OK. Did you go in with the right thing, though,

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- of all your many...?- Yes, yeah, for the robots that we had in there,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- that was the right one.- And similar for yourselves, it just...

0:12:02 > 0:12:04You know, you were just battering into each other.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06Yeah, well, we saw Hobgoblin had a really,

0:12:06 > 0:12:08really nasty spinner on it, so we wanted to take that out,

0:12:08 > 0:12:10so we turned that over and it was just three of us left.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Behemoth and Eruption!

0:12:14 > 0:12:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Eruption return victorious to the pit

0:12:20 > 0:12:23for their two-hour repair window.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25For an experienced team like Behemoth,

0:12:25 > 0:12:27it's an uneasy start to the competition.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30We had a problem almost from the start

0:12:30 > 0:12:32with one of the chains failing.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35We've just taken that apart so we can actually repair it.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Going to go over the robot with a fine tooth comb and just

0:12:38 > 0:12:41check everything is perfect.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42In our second group battle,

0:12:42 > 0:12:47we have Cherub, PP3D, Draven and Push To Exit.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48Let's meet the teams.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56This crusher has been internally redesigned.

0:12:56 > 0:12:57It is more heavily armoured.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59But does its weapon have enough bite

0:12:59 > 0:13:01to get them through their group battle?

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Do you have to drive it very carefully just to get

0:13:05 > 0:13:08- the exact right place to grab somebody?- No, we can pretty...

0:13:08 > 0:13:10As long as something happens between there, we can get hold of it,

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- then start... - Still, you're talking about...

0:13:13 > 0:13:16This is a zone of danger, this area, this size of area here...

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- And then we can pick them up. - OK, grand.- That's it.- That's it?

0:13:19 > 0:13:21- That's the idea. - Give it up for Draven!

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Competing last series with robot Dantomkia,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37team captain Shane has built a brand-new flipper.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Can his innovative design push them to victory?

0:13:41 > 0:13:44It's a flipper, but it's hinged from the front,

0:13:44 > 0:13:46- so it goes forwards, erm... - And with more control?

0:13:46 > 0:13:50More control, so we can flip our enemies into Killalot, Matilda,

0:13:50 > 0:13:53- or even the pit.- Please give a round of applause for Push To Exit!

0:14:01 > 0:14:05The older members of the Colliass family competed last series

0:14:05 > 0:14:06with their robot Gabriel.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09This time, it's the turn of the youngest.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14- Cherub does something that no other robot does, am I right?- Yeah.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16- What does it do? - It does a handstand.

0:14:16 > 0:14:17It does a handstand?

0:14:17 > 0:14:20That wasn't even the answer I was expecting when I asked the question!

0:14:20 > 0:14:22- Are you going to drive it, by the way?- No, Toby is.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24You're going to drive it, OK.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27- How quickly can you get it out of tight corners?- It's not...

0:14:27 > 0:14:30It's not that fast but it's quite easy to control compared to Gabriel.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Promise me you'll do a handstand at some stage when you're in there.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35- OK, yeah, we will. - Give it up for Cherub!

0:14:42 > 0:14:45PP3D dealt out some heavy hits last year.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48This version is upgraded to fix reliability issues

0:14:48 > 0:14:50with the undercutting disc.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54The team also have an innovative way of paying for the upgrades.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57We've got a brand-new disc.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58Now, interestingly enough,

0:14:58 > 0:15:02PP3D is the world's first crowd-funded robot.

0:15:02 > 0:15:03So, what?!

0:15:03 > 0:15:06Other people paid for your hobby?!

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Other people pledged money to assist us and help us with our upgrades,

0:15:10 > 0:15:11and some of those...

0:15:11 > 0:15:14I'm sorry, that must feel like a lot of pressure!

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Not only do you have to, you know, do it for the team,

0:15:17 > 0:15:19- you've to do it for how many people? - 76 backers.- 76?!

0:15:19 > 0:15:21And are these their names on the...?

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Those are their names, they've been laser-etched onto the disc,

0:15:24 > 0:15:27so they'll be spinning at 2,500rpm in the arena.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30Swag your way up to that arena, and good luck.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32- Wonderful, thank you very much. - Slightly terrifying.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38They'll all need to play to their own strengths and avoid those

0:15:38 > 0:15:40that pose them the biggest threat.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43It's the ultimate game of rock, paper, scissors.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45Take it away, Jonathan.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Thanks very much, Dara and Angela, our arena angels.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53The teams in the second group battle tonight are entering that arena.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56From Wiltshire, Draven.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59The disciples of Draven have returned with

0:15:59 > 0:16:01a harder and faster crusher.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Draven has eight 800W motors for improved speed and pushing power.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Draven has a light but strong carbon fibre chassis,

0:16:07 > 0:16:10but will it stand up to the rigours of the Robot Wars arena?

0:16:10 > 0:16:14From Mablethorpe, Push To Exit.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19Push To Exit is the only front hinge flipper competing this series.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Team captain Shane has overclocked his 24V drive system

0:16:22 > 0:16:26to 28.8V, meaning it can hit a top speed of 22mph.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Team captain Shane also manages an amusement arcade, and has performed

0:16:30 > 0:16:33driving tests for Push To Exit in the dodgems after hours!

0:16:33 > 0:16:36From Essex, Cherub.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40Cherub is a team of brothers and sisters from the Colliass family.

0:16:40 > 0:16:4313-year-old Toby the youngest driver in the competition.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Cherub gets its strength from a 75 to 1 gear ratio

0:16:45 > 0:16:47on its 360-degree lifting spikes,

0:16:47 > 0:16:51and according to the team the robot is capable of lifting a house robot!

0:16:51 > 0:16:55From Aberdeenshire, PP3D.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00Team PP3D are back and more powerful than ever!

0:17:00 > 0:17:03This PP3D Version Two has a 31kg spinning disc

0:17:03 > 0:17:05and spins at 2,600rpm.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07The team say that PP3D is more than capable of

0:17:07 > 0:17:09slicing through the arena's side wall.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12Yeah? You break it, you've bought it!

0:17:12 > 0:17:15And the house robot, for the first time tonight...

0:17:15 > 0:17:18He's got an axe to grind, and it's titanium-tipped.

0:17:18 > 0:17:19It's Shunt.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24After this battle two of these robots will be going home,

0:17:24 > 0:17:26and it is battle time.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28Roboteers, stand by!

0:17:28 > 0:17:30Wave...

0:17:31 > 0:17:35Good luck to Toby. Terrific stuff, only 13.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38Smile, wave, smile, wave.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43Three, two, one...

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Activate!

0:17:45 > 0:17:47I'm intrigued to see PP3D's spinner here -

0:17:47 > 0:17:51very low ground clearance, only a centimetre above the arena floor.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53It's a good onslaught early on by Push To Exit,

0:17:53 > 0:17:55the blue at the top of that arena.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Meanwhile, Draven, big machine...

0:17:59 > 0:18:00There's Cherub with the wings,

0:18:00 > 0:18:02getting away there from Push To Exit.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07This is a very tight one as well, they all look mobile,

0:18:07 > 0:18:08they all look very threatening.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12See what I mean about that spinner?

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Very low to the arena floor, bouncing up there on Cherub.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Meanwhile, Draven nearly flipped by the Floor Flipper,

0:18:19 > 0:18:21this is good stuff!

0:18:21 > 0:18:25Draven, frontal onslaught onto PP3D, is that wise?

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Onto that 31kg spinning disc?

0:18:30 > 0:18:34Draven here, one of the favourites for this heat, completely is

0:18:34 > 0:18:38in trouble, and very nearly caught there by the house robot...

0:18:38 > 0:18:39And, whoa, punctured!

0:18:39 > 0:18:42- Oh, we're out.- Yeah.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45I think that puncture has destroyed them!

0:18:45 > 0:18:48In came Shunt, down came the mighty axe, out go Draven! Wow!

0:18:50 > 0:18:53The power of that axe is astonishing!

0:18:53 > 0:18:57Electrics, bang, gone, finished. See what I mean about that spinner?

0:18:57 > 0:19:00Very low to the arena floor.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Push To Exit? Active?

0:19:02 > 0:19:04- It's dead. - It's not that, it's under...- Oh!

0:19:04 > 0:19:07Who's active out there? I don't think Push To Exit are active,

0:19:07 > 0:19:09I think the other two will go through.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11- Did we win?- Yeah. - That was quick!

0:19:14 > 0:19:17And well done, Cherub.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20Brave enough to take on PP3D, a frontal onslaught.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22They took punishment, they didn't mind,

0:19:22 > 0:19:23they came back again and again and again.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Something came off Draven there.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27They were disappointing, really, to be honest.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29PP3D very impressive, looked destructive.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32That was the damage to Draven that put them out,

0:19:32 > 0:19:34but all the way through Cherub kept coming back.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37- Wasn't quite the exit you were hoping for, was it?- Not quite, no.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39What happened? Did a pin come out?

0:19:39 > 0:19:41It looked like you just lost your drive...

0:19:41 > 0:19:44Yeah, it just... It took a hit, and then I think a wire's come out,

0:19:44 > 0:19:46we just lost power straight away.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48Thank you, sorry it was so short-lived.

0:19:48 > 0:19:49PP3D, on the other hand,

0:19:49 > 0:19:53you looked like you literally took the bottom out of Draven.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55Relentlessly as well, you did not back up.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Well, that's it, until they stop moving you keep attacking.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00We look forward to seeing you in the head-to-heads, well done.

0:20:03 > 0:20:04Ye-e-e-es! Very good!

0:20:04 > 0:20:07However, what was the one thing you failed to do?

0:20:07 > 0:20:09- Handstand. - Where was the handstand?

0:20:09 > 0:20:12It's because, erm, the fork's bent in, so...

0:20:12 > 0:20:14Oh, really, so you couldn't get it around the front?

0:20:14 > 0:20:16Get that handstand working,

0:20:16 > 0:20:19we need to see the only handstanding robot stand on a hand.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22That'd be fantastic. But well done, how great is this?

0:20:22 > 0:20:26How fantastic is this? Ladies and gentlemen, Draven are going home,

0:20:26 > 0:20:28but going through are Cherub!

0:20:28 > 0:20:29Yes!

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Team PP3D's powerful weapon is creating huge electrical demand

0:20:36 > 0:20:40on the battery units, causing the team major problems.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45It seems that the connections have fused together...

0:20:45 > 0:20:48in the heat going through them. We've been drawing a lot of current.

0:20:48 > 0:20:49I'll need to basically give it a full strip out

0:20:49 > 0:20:51and check the circuitry.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54They now need to strip down, diagnose

0:20:54 > 0:20:58and rebuild their robot within the two-hour allotted repair time.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03Cherub also haven't escaped unscathed from the group battle.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08We took a pretty serious hit from PP3D which bent one of the arms,

0:21:08 > 0:21:10which was one of the reasons why

0:21:10 > 0:21:12we couldn't do the handstands at the end, wasn't it?

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Yeah, which we wanted to do.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17The team sustained most of their damage from PP3D.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20To survive, they'll have to use their unconventional weapon

0:21:20 > 0:21:22more effectively next time.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25The group battles are over.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28The four robots through to the head-to-head stage are

0:21:28 > 0:21:32Cherub, PP3D, Eruption and Behemoth.

0:21:32 > 0:21:33First to fight are...

0:21:37 > 0:21:39After teething problems in their opening fight,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43the experienced Behemoth know they need to play to their strengths

0:21:43 > 0:21:45to get some points on the board.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Outlast them, I think. We're going to go for the endurance factor.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50They're high pressure, we're low pressure,

0:21:50 > 0:21:52so our gas is going to go further,

0:21:52 > 0:21:54- so let's make every flip count. - Yeah.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56Eruption captain Michael has hundreds of robot fights

0:21:56 > 0:22:00under his belt, so he knows how to adapt and change

0:22:00 > 0:22:02depending on his next opponent.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05In this case, to negate the huge scoop of Behemoth.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07We've swapped our flipper arm over.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10You can see it's not got any scratches on it cos it's brand-new.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12But this is the one that we've been using for the past five years

0:22:12 > 0:22:15on Eruption, it's perfect for fighting flippers.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18It scrapes the ground, so we should be getting under them quite well.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Eruption's drive to win has led them to build one of the most

0:22:21 > 0:22:23powerful flipping robots in the world.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25But with limited flips,

0:22:25 > 0:22:29it will be up to team captain and driver Michael to make them count.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34We're Team Eruption, and we're from Warrington in Cheshire.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37On our team is me, Michael, and my dad, Adrian.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40I'm an engineering student at university

0:22:40 > 0:22:42and my dad works for a research laboratory.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47Last year people said we got a bit lucky,

0:22:47 > 0:22:49and we were that close to making the heat final.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51This year we're hoping to do a lot better,

0:22:51 > 0:22:53and Eruption is a robot worthy of being a finalist.

0:22:56 > 0:22:5718's a big year for me.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00I've moved out of home, I've started university.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03Turns out a robot is a lot easier to use than a washing machine!

0:23:05 > 0:23:09Eruption's built as one big shell that everything bolts into.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11So, if we fight a big spinner and we get a lot of damage

0:23:11 > 0:23:13and that twists the shell,

0:23:13 > 0:23:17we're going to have a lot of trouble repairing that on the day.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19I might have only just started my career in engineering,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21but I'm here to teach everyone a lesson.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28Behemoth are the most experienced team in the competition,

0:23:28 > 0:23:32incrementally upgrading their robot for 18 years.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34Can these new modifications bring them glory?

0:23:37 > 0:23:41Behemoth - it's big, it's bad, it's back.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45I'm the driver of Behemoth.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47We have Kane, who does all our pneumatics,

0:23:47 > 0:23:50we have Michael, who does our electronics,

0:23:50 > 0:23:52and Kevin, who does all our mechanical work.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55This time around, Behemoth is going to be a modular-type robot.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57The type one bucket is the original.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01The type two bucket is a plough type, designed to deflect spinners.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04And the type three is going to be an attachment that fits on type one,

0:24:04 > 0:24:07but gives us the edge to be able to grab a robot

0:24:07 > 0:24:08and to control the fight.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16We feel that we've got a robot that is capable, but we just keep

0:24:16 > 0:24:20finding those unlucky moments that just keep catching us out.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22Behemoth has been 18 years in the making.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25We're going to show these new robots how it's done.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33For the first time tonight, she WOULD hurt a fly.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36It's the 350 kilos of Matilda.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42And direct from the scrapyards of hell,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44it's the vertical saw of Dead Metal.

0:24:49 > 0:24:50Behemoth against Eruption.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52Both robots can't deal out a huge amount of damage.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54I think we're going to see a very tactical fight.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57Driving crucial here in a fight between two experienced teams.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59Time will tell.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03Three, two, one...

0:25:03 > 0:25:04Activate!

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Well, someone pulled Behemoth's chain in the first fight

0:25:07 > 0:25:08and they didn't like it.

0:25:09 > 0:25:13Eruption fought very well in that group battle,

0:25:13 > 0:25:16but there's the power of the scoop of Behemoth.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18I like the additions they've made,

0:25:18 > 0:25:20but I like the tenacity of Eruption as well,

0:25:20 > 0:25:22using their improvements there.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25They're still concerned about a lack of armour against spinners.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27Can't see.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30I can't see a thing.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32They can't see, the Behemoth team.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34- JONATHAN LAUGHS - Can you see it?

0:25:34 > 0:25:35No, I can't!

0:25:35 > 0:25:38They're going blind at the moment, they can't see in there!

0:25:38 > 0:25:39And they're in real trouble!

0:25:39 > 0:25:42As a result, Eruption getting in underneath Behemoth!

0:25:43 > 0:25:47Well, that's a tactic we've not seen before,

0:25:47 > 0:25:50put a robot out of the line of sight of its roboteers!

0:25:51 > 0:25:53Innovative. And they've gone back in there again.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Will Behemoth be suckered in again? No.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01More cautionary... Oh, what a flip!

0:26:01 > 0:26:03- Yes!- Yes, Michael!

0:26:03 > 0:26:05How about that?!

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Sensational stuff!

0:26:09 > 0:26:13It just lifted 108.5kg there!

0:26:14 > 0:26:17Lack of vision for Behemoth all the way through.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21They started well, Eruption was bouncing over the flame pit,

0:26:21 > 0:26:22Behemoth on top...

0:26:25 > 0:26:28But once they got into that corner area you could see there

0:26:28 > 0:26:30the power of Eruption.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34They could lift Behemoth and Behemoth didn't learn the lesson.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36And out they went.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40Eruption have won the battle of the flippers,

0:26:40 > 0:26:44but they still have to face their biggest fear.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47We've not fought a big spinner yet,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49so we've not had too much damage.

0:26:49 > 0:26:54So that's still to come, probably, but so far we're in good shape.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Behemoth are smarting from that early defeat

0:26:56 > 0:26:58at the hands of Eruption.

0:26:58 > 0:26:59We both had a good tussle there.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I was on top to start with, but...

0:27:02 > 0:27:06Yeah, just luck of the draw at that one point, that's all it takes.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Surprisingly, for such an experienced team,

0:27:08 > 0:27:11Behemoth find themselves chasing points early in the tournament.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15But they've identified what they think will be an easy opponent.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17Hopefully we get Cherub next

0:27:17 > 0:27:21because we want to take on PP3D, er, as fit as we can,

0:27:21 > 0:27:25and realistically there's not much that Cherub can do to us.

0:27:25 > 0:27:30But Behemoth must wait as Cherub's first head-to-head is against PP3D.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Team PP3D have repaired their electrics.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35However, Gary's concerned his machine will prove to be

0:27:35 > 0:27:37too powerful for its own good,

0:27:37 > 0:27:41creating huge amounts of pressure on the weapon system.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45PP3D's biggest weakness is its weapon is so hugely powerful,

0:27:45 > 0:27:46that's what it comes down to.

0:27:46 > 0:27:50They could hurt us, basically, by taking the knocks that we dish out.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54Erm, the shock that goes back through the chassis is

0:27:54 > 0:27:55our biggest problem.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59Cherub isn't designed to defend against big spinners, but the team

0:27:59 > 0:28:02have modified their robot to focus on attacking

0:28:02 > 0:28:03their opponent's weak spot.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09Our secret weapon is we've got, erm, sharp forks,

0:28:09 > 0:28:11which means we're hoping to pop their tyres.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13It's a lot pointier than usual.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Should be able to pierce through their tyres.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21Last series dad Craig chose not to go in for the killer blow,

0:28:21 > 0:28:24and some felt it cost them the competition -

0:28:24 > 0:28:26a lesson Cherub don't intend to forget.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31I think that's enough. Leave it, leave it, leave it.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34I don't want to damage his robot any more.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36My dad was a wimp last year,

0:28:36 > 0:28:40and I'm going to make sure that I don't make the same mistakes he did.

0:28:40 > 0:28:44Our team is Team Cherub. I'm Sarah, and I'm the captain.

0:28:44 > 0:28:48Toby is the driver, Mark is the weapons operator,

0:28:48 > 0:28:51and most importantly, Rosie is the cupcake baker.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55Our robot's unique because it's a 360 lifter.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58That means it can go all the way around,

0:28:58 > 0:29:01and that means if it goes on its back it can flip back onto its feet.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06I'm most proud of the wings because it makes it look amazing,

0:29:06 > 0:29:09and if it didn't have the wings it wouldn't be Cherub.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13I like to help out in the garage,

0:29:13 > 0:29:16but Dad doesn't like me playing with the power tools, and it really

0:29:16 > 0:29:20annoys me, but I can't really do anything about it cos he's my dad.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23If my robot got destroyed in battle

0:29:23 > 0:29:26I'd be really upset and I'd go up to them

0:29:26 > 0:29:28and cry right in their faces so they'd feel guilty.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33My dad got to the heat finals,

0:29:33 > 0:29:35but we're going to do one better and win.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44Team PP3D have one of the most vicious spinners in the competition,

0:29:44 > 0:29:47but will it tear itself apart before team captain Gary

0:29:47 > 0:29:49can prove its potential?

0:29:52 > 0:29:55We are very confident in PP3D's ability to win the competition.

0:29:55 > 0:29:57We wouldn't be entering otherwise.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04So I run a 3-D printing business,

0:30:04 > 0:30:07Sarah runs a smallholding, looking after a variety of animals

0:30:07 > 0:30:10including Shetland sheep and Shetland ponies,

0:30:10 > 0:30:13and Lawrence is an engineer, and he's very good at taking

0:30:13 > 0:30:16things apart and putting them back together again.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21So we went for an undercutter design to try and get past

0:30:21 > 0:30:22the defence of other robots,

0:30:22 > 0:30:25to take out wheels, to try and get behind flippers

0:30:25 > 0:30:27and just do as much damage as possible.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32During an impact with PP3D,

0:30:32 > 0:30:36half the energy of the collision goes back through the robot chassis,

0:30:36 > 0:30:39so we had to design the robot to be able to survive that.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42So one design decision that people might think is a bit odd

0:30:42 > 0:30:44is the fact that we have exposed wheels.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46For us, those wheels, very easy to switch out.

0:30:46 > 0:30:51If everything is enclosed then it means you basically have to keep on

0:30:51 > 0:30:55hitting the other robot until something gets destroyed inside.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00PP3D is the most powerful robot that I've ever built.

0:31:00 > 0:31:01You're going to have to bring something special

0:31:01 > 0:31:03to the arena to beat us.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10In the arena for this battle, he's got an axe to grind,

0:31:10 > 0:31:11it's Shunt.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14And it's the vertical saw of Dead Metal.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20Three, two, one...

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Activate!

0:31:22 > 0:31:24So, Cherub want to leave PP3D tired and emotional,

0:31:24 > 0:31:27but let's not forget the team from Essex also have exposed tyres.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30You can see them there!

0:31:30 > 0:31:35Behind that blade, brilliant from Cherub. So brave, young Toby.

0:31:35 > 0:31:37Doesn't shirk a challenge.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39Front foot all the way.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46Now out come the rogue robots. The Dial Of Doom.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49It gives them the opportunity to come into the fray.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53Dead Metal has Cherub up, what a shame that is.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56- Try to get out.- I can't.

0:31:56 > 0:31:58He's up to speed now, boy!

0:32:01 > 0:32:03You can hear the hum of PP3D's spinning blade.

0:32:05 > 0:32:08And that's the punishment it can mete out.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10Arena side wall destroyed.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12There's part of the arena gone.

0:32:12 > 0:32:13We have to stop.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16Cease is called when the arena is damaged.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20Cease is called cos Cherub's been damaged!

0:32:23 > 0:32:26"Oh, yeah, we're safe now... Oh, no, we're not!"

0:32:27 > 0:32:30One moment they thought they were OK and look at that!

0:32:30 > 0:32:32No wonder Gary thinks this is the most powerful machine

0:32:32 > 0:32:34he's ever built.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36We saw it coming on and we are in the control room

0:32:36 > 0:32:39and we heard a smash and we could see a scrape across

0:32:39 > 0:32:42the bulletproof glass, but you don't expect it to look

0:32:42 > 0:32:44quite as dramatic as that.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46You can see just there,

0:32:46 > 0:32:48where it all just got sheared off by the power of it.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50Plus, we broke the arena.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55They're getting ludicrously powerful, these machines.

0:32:55 > 0:32:56With the arena now repaired,

0:32:56 > 0:32:58the teams will start from where they stopped

0:32:58 > 0:33:00and will now share the same control room.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04Thanks very much.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Let me explain - they can't touch the robots in that cease period,

0:33:07 > 0:33:10so they don't know how reliable they are now.

0:33:10 > 0:33:11Off we go again.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14Just over two minutes of the fight remain.

0:33:14 > 0:33:15I'm coming for you!

0:33:17 > 0:33:21Well, how much movement is left in those machines?

0:33:21 > 0:33:25They need to be able to turn out of their circumference.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28They're just going to toast us like a marshmallow!

0:33:28 > 0:33:31Because they're immobile, the countdown has started.

0:33:31 > 0:33:32I think they're both immobile.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35This will go to the judges to decide who was immobile first.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Cease called. Judges' decision.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41Well done. Well done, guys, well done.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46Ten out of ten for bravery, Cherub.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48The frontal onslaught into that powerful spinning blade,

0:33:48 > 0:33:50that's how powerful it is,

0:33:50 > 0:33:52the most powerful I think we've seen in the series so far.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54But for me they were immobilised,

0:33:54 > 0:33:56goodness me, roughly at the same time.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00A for effort!

0:34:00 > 0:34:04If nothing else you've given Noel Sharkey a headache, so well done!

0:34:04 > 0:34:06Shall we get to results?

0:34:06 > 0:34:09As you were both immobilised, the judges have gone back and reviewed

0:34:09 > 0:34:12the footage from the entire fight,

0:34:12 > 0:34:14not just that dismal last ten seconds,

0:34:14 > 0:34:17and they have made a unanimous decision.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19And the winner of that battle

0:34:19 > 0:34:21was Cherub!

0:34:21 > 0:34:23- CHEERING - Well done!

0:34:23 > 0:34:24Congratulations!

0:34:26 > 0:34:30PP3D have a huge repair job on their hands.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34The major damage is that one of our drive motors

0:34:34 > 0:34:37has essentially sheared off its mounting points.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40That's why we were going in circles,

0:34:40 > 0:34:42because the wheel was essentially at an angle.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46As feared, the powerful disc is to blame,

0:34:46 > 0:34:49but team captain Gary isn't prepared to compromise on power.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54I'd never tone down the disc. The disc will spin at its maximum

0:34:54 > 0:34:58and we just have to repair the rest of the robot to survive it.

0:34:58 > 0:35:02Cherub did well to absorb those hits from PP3D but their chassis

0:35:02 > 0:35:06and lifter weapon suffered after taking the brunt of the impacts.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09They now have to get it all back fighting fit

0:35:09 > 0:35:12to stand a chance in this competition.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16So what we need to do is straighten all this up

0:35:16 > 0:35:19so it can allow the lifters to rotate 360 degrees,

0:35:19 > 0:35:23because in our next battle we're against a flipper

0:35:23 > 0:35:27and if we can't self-right then it's going to be a very short battle.

0:35:27 > 0:35:31I think that's going to be the first port of call, to be honest.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35After the first head-to-head, PP3D and Behemoth have no points.

0:35:35 > 0:35:39Cherub have two and Eruption is in the lead with three.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41Next up, it's a big one -

0:35:41 > 0:35:42first versus second place,

0:35:42 > 0:35:45Eruption and Cherub.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48Cherub are repairing by cutting away damaged parts

0:35:48 > 0:35:51and rewelding new metal in its place.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54Cherub's quite unassuming, it's a tough robot,

0:35:54 > 0:35:56but we need that three points. So to get a knockout

0:35:56 > 0:35:58we're going to have to try and get it out the arena

0:35:58 > 0:36:00or beat it with the house robot.

0:36:00 > 0:36:01The teams head to the arena.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04Cherub are battle-scarred but rebuilt and ready to go.

0:36:04 > 0:36:08They'll need to keep their wits about them if they want to avoid

0:36:08 > 0:36:10becoming Eruption's next victim.

0:36:10 > 0:36:16In the arena, Matilda, and house robot number two, it's Dead Metal.

0:36:19 > 0:36:24Three, two, one...

0:36:24 > 0:36:26Activate!

0:36:26 > 0:36:28And off we go.

0:36:28 > 0:36:29How active is Cherub?

0:36:29 > 0:36:32They're looking to get those spikes working there

0:36:32 > 0:36:35and Eruption trying to get in underneath.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37- Don't get flicked out! - Try and flip them.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40They have custom-made electronics, Eruption,

0:36:40 > 0:36:43pulsing the timing of the gas to the flipper...

0:36:43 > 0:36:45Oh, no!

0:36:45 > 0:36:49..meaning they can reserve their gas for big arena-outing flips.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52That's what they're going for here. They've manoeuvred it...

0:36:52 > 0:36:55and out they go! Brilliant from Eruption.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57CHEERING

0:36:59 > 0:37:01We lost in 30 seconds!

0:37:01 > 0:37:03Cease!

0:37:03 > 0:37:05That was hugely impressive!

0:37:05 > 0:37:06This is one to watch.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11Cherub trying to do the handstand.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Don't know what he's doing there, to be honest.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Bit of gymnastics.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19That's what you call losing.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23Having fished the robot out of the moat,

0:37:23 > 0:37:25Team Cherub return to the pits

0:37:25 > 0:37:28and the reason for their lack of mobility becomes apparent.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31Early on, we realised we weren't going to be able to drive anywhere

0:37:31 > 0:37:33because one of our wheels wasn't turning.

0:37:33 > 0:37:37We're going to have to replace the motor

0:37:37 > 0:37:41and hit this back to make it so it doesn't get jammed.

0:37:41 > 0:37:45For Eruption, once again, there are no repairs.

0:37:45 > 0:37:49They're riding high and their plan of mercilessly launching opponents

0:37:49 > 0:37:51out of the arena is working nicely.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53We've won two fights in a row now,

0:37:53 > 0:37:57and that's what Eruption's built to do, so to see it all go perfectly,

0:37:57 > 0:38:00so exactly what you envisage in your head in the arena,

0:38:00 > 0:38:02that's a really good feeling.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04They may be at the top of the league,

0:38:04 > 0:38:07but busy fine tuning in the pits shows there's no time

0:38:07 > 0:38:09for complacency with Michael and his dad.

0:38:11 > 0:38:12Fighting next is bottom of

0:38:12 > 0:38:14the league Behemoth versus PP3D.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18Neither robot has any points on the board.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20To stay in contention,

0:38:20 > 0:38:23they both need the full three points of a knockout win.

0:38:23 > 0:38:27The repair of PP3D's motor and weapon continues.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30Behemoth are ready to go and have changed their scoop

0:38:30 > 0:38:34to one specially designed to deal with spinners.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37The idea is it will ride up this here, deflecting the angle

0:38:37 > 0:38:39of approach of their spinner.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42This is going to get some pretty gouges on it

0:38:42 > 0:38:43because it's only aluminium.

0:38:43 > 0:38:48It's tougher to take away the actual momentum of their disc.

0:38:48 > 0:38:50A critical match for both teams.

0:38:50 > 0:38:55Could Behemoth's adaptations give them the edge in this crucial fight?

0:38:55 > 0:39:02In the arena for this battle, it's the titanium-tipped axe of Shunt

0:39:02 > 0:39:04and Dead Metal.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10Three, two, one...

0:39:10 > 0:39:13Activate!

0:39:13 > 0:39:16PP3D have had frazzled circuitry.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18Keep on them!

0:39:18 > 0:39:21They've had problems caused by the great power of that spinning blade.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24Can they control its force?

0:39:24 > 0:39:28Behemoth with the anti-spinner scoop doing a good job so far

0:39:28 > 0:39:30and getting in underneath.

0:39:30 > 0:39:31Keep front on.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33And just about turning away.

0:39:33 > 0:39:35Wow!

0:39:35 > 0:39:38They tried to get in behind and flip PP3D

0:39:38 > 0:39:42and bore the brunt of the spinner, but I think PP3D has exploded!

0:39:42 > 0:39:44Back off, back off, back off!

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Pit release. Pit release now.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48Slowly, slowly, slowly.

0:39:52 > 0:39:56Down goes the Dial Of Doom, which means a house robot can come out,

0:39:56 > 0:39:58and it is Shunt looking for revenge.

0:39:58 > 0:40:02They wanted to be on fire for the series - well, they are!

0:40:02 > 0:40:03For the wrong reason.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06Get onto them!

0:40:06 > 0:40:09Circuitry frazzled again, cease is called. That will be a big win

0:40:09 > 0:40:12and three points for Behemoth.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14CHEERING

0:40:14 > 0:40:17Ho-ho! A tumble!

0:40:20 > 0:40:24I can tell you, Ant and Kane dance like that in the discos.

0:40:24 > 0:40:25They are winners.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31Well, that moment I thought Behemoth might be in trouble

0:40:31 > 0:40:36but again it was the power of its own weaponry that did PP3D in

0:40:36 > 0:40:38and won Shunt a chance of revenge.

0:40:38 > 0:40:40Shunt took that revenge.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42Big surprise.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46Behemoth's robot gamble paid off.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48A battered PP3D is left pointless

0:40:48 > 0:40:51and facing their biggest repair job yet.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53Our weapon is so destructive

0:40:53 > 0:40:57actually taking the shock back through the chassis

0:40:57 > 0:41:01is what has done this, and then is what has also...

0:41:01 > 0:41:04which then obviously resulted in the sparks

0:41:04 > 0:41:07and us essentially losing the battle.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10While our teams work on their repairs,

0:41:10 > 0:41:14it's time to check in with head judge Professor Noel Sharkey.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18Where are we going to see more robots in day-to-day life?

0:41:18 > 0:41:22The first thing all these people are going to be seeing

0:41:22 > 0:41:23is delivery robots.

0:41:23 > 0:41:26A big online company announced they were going to start

0:41:26 > 0:41:28doing delivery drones.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30They're going to have a 100 foot skyway through London.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33They're going to apportion a part of the space above us?

0:41:33 > 0:41:36450 feet, just below the helicopter level,

0:41:36 > 0:41:39and that will be thick with robots.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41There are other schemes as well.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44- You've one in your hand. - This is a pavement robot.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46It holds 10kg in here.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49They're using them in Greenwich, two cities in Germany.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52They're working with the Swiss Postal Service.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55It's met two million people so far in these countries.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57Some people give it a little stroke or a pet,

0:41:57 > 0:42:00they anthropomorphise it, think it's an animal.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03But they are only seeing one of them now.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05At some point we'll be stepping over them.

0:42:05 > 0:42:07Seeing hundreds and hundreds of them.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10And then you the consumer, then, how does it know that it's you?

0:42:10 > 0:42:14They send you a text message on your phone and you click the link.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16It goes, "Bzzz!"

0:42:16 > 0:42:19How long before we see this being a standard part of our lives?

0:42:19 > 0:42:21- This year.- Really?

0:42:21 > 0:42:24- I would say so, yeah. - Thank you very much, Noel Sharkey.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26APPLAUSE

0:42:26 > 0:42:28Next up, it's PP3D and Eruption.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30This should be an easy three points

0:42:30 > 0:42:32for Michael but he hasn't forgotten

0:42:32 > 0:42:34the devastation caused last series.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36If you want to set up a backstory or something,

0:42:36 > 0:42:38that is probably what you'd call our arch enemy.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40It took us out last time.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42It's a devastating robot.

0:42:45 > 0:42:47We're going to change our configuration of Eruption

0:42:47 > 0:42:50completely to try and deflect spinner attacks

0:42:50 > 0:42:52but it's just so powerful.

0:42:52 > 0:42:55We need to try to come out of that fight with as little damage

0:42:55 > 0:42:58as we can to make sure we can take on whoever we are facing

0:42:58 > 0:42:59in the heat final.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02PP3D know exactly where to aim for.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07With Eruption, I'm trying to get around the back of them

0:43:07 > 0:43:10because their wheels are exposed there,

0:43:10 > 0:43:12so try and get round the back,

0:43:12 > 0:43:16give them big hits right the way along, we'll see how we go.

0:43:16 > 0:43:18Eruption has shown a ruthless streak,

0:43:18 > 0:43:20flipping opponents out of the arena,

0:43:20 > 0:43:23but could PP3D prove to be its Achilles heel,

0:43:23 > 0:43:25bringing them back down to earth?

0:43:25 > 0:43:30Overseeing this fight, the worst cuddle I ever had, it's Dead Metal,

0:43:30 > 0:43:32and Sir Killalot.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37Three, two, one...

0:43:37 > 0:43:39Activate!

0:43:39 > 0:43:42Off they go, can they get in round the back of Eruption? Goodness me!

0:43:42 > 0:43:47Eruption looking for revenge against their old enemies.

0:43:47 > 0:43:48Up to speed.

0:43:49 > 0:43:53Up to speed, they wanted that blade to work so frenetically.

0:43:53 > 0:43:58Eruption using what they call the anti-carbide PP3D side pods

0:43:58 > 0:43:59to deflect blows.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04They come in underneath PP3D.

0:44:04 > 0:44:07Trying to get an angle to flip them.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10Has the blade stopped working? It has.

0:44:10 > 0:44:13No weaponry on PP3D.

0:44:13 > 0:44:15Go! Go! Get it on!

0:44:15 > 0:44:19Don't think they had any ground clearance, but now, upside-down,

0:44:19 > 0:44:21maybe they can get that blade working.

0:44:21 > 0:44:23No, they are out!

0:44:23 > 0:44:26For a minute there I thought they had hope.

0:44:26 > 0:44:30Three flips in a row, three cheers for Eruption.

0:44:30 > 0:44:31Cease.

0:44:33 > 0:44:35Eruption on the attack early on.

0:44:35 > 0:44:37Tossed PP3D in the air,

0:44:37 > 0:44:40so too did the Floor Flipper.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43And that was the end of it all.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45There's no exit like a Robot Wars exit

0:44:45 > 0:44:47and PP3D are out of the competition.

0:44:47 > 0:44:50That's 9mm thick Hardox.

0:44:50 > 0:44:54To put a decent slice in that is pretty impressive.

0:44:54 > 0:44:57They've taken some nice gashes out the side, but compared with

0:44:57 > 0:44:58last year when we fought them,

0:44:58 > 0:45:01they tore a massive slot through the side, took the wheel out.

0:45:01 > 0:45:03They ripped one of these panels completely off last time.

0:45:03 > 0:45:06Compared to that, we're quite happy with it.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09So, Eruption are our first finalists.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11Who joins them comes down to this,

0:45:11 > 0:45:12the last head-to-head

0:45:12 > 0:45:14between Behemoth and Cherub.

0:45:14 > 0:45:17Team Cherub aren't underestimating the threat posed

0:45:17 > 0:45:19by the experienced Behemoth.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21Got Behemoth next, who are really skilled.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24They've been building up their robot...

0:45:24 > 0:45:25- For 15 years!- ..for 15 years!

0:45:25 > 0:45:29They've spent a lot of money getting the drive perfect.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33I think it's going to be hard to beat it.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35I do feel the pressure a little bit.

0:45:35 > 0:45:39I think since Toby's done such a good job of driving it,

0:45:39 > 0:45:42I want to make sure he's got a robot to actually drive.

0:45:43 > 0:45:45Meanwhile, their opponents seem confident

0:45:45 > 0:45:49that their battle-hardened robot will secure them the points

0:45:49 > 0:45:51needed to put them in the final.

0:45:51 > 0:45:55There's even plans to try out their new experimental grabber.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58Should be a fun fight.

0:45:58 > 0:46:01We are pondering whether to go with the original bucket

0:46:01 > 0:46:03or give the grabber a try,

0:46:03 > 0:46:08so you have to wait to see what we decide, I think.

0:46:08 > 0:46:10It's Cherub versus Behemoth.

0:46:10 > 0:46:13A biblical battle. You've got your new weapon here.

0:46:13 > 0:46:15We have. They're the right size to fit in there.

0:46:15 > 0:46:19- You're just going to pick them up? - Hopefully. Give them a good hug

0:46:19 > 0:46:22and drive them around the arena and control the fight.

0:46:22 > 0:46:23If you get through this,

0:46:23 > 0:46:26it will be a rematch, of course,

0:46:26 > 0:46:28and that was a hell of a battle.

0:46:28 > 0:46:30- It was.- And they flipped you out.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32Got a bit of payback there so I want to get into that final.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34Fabulous, this is building up wonderfully!

0:46:34 > 0:46:36Give it up for Behemoth!

0:46:36 > 0:46:39CHEERING

0:46:39 > 0:46:42Well, you heard them, the winner of this battle goes through

0:46:42 > 0:46:45to the final against Eruption. Please tell me you've got a plan.

0:46:45 > 0:46:47I think I might try and use the arena hazards,

0:46:47 > 0:46:50try and block their path with the fire and the spikes.

0:46:50 > 0:46:54OK, so feeding them, using their own tactics on them.

0:46:54 > 0:46:57- Yeah.- That's the plan. Please give it up for Team Cherub!

0:46:57 > 0:46:59- CHEERING - Good luck!

0:47:01 > 0:47:03In the CPZ for this battle,

0:47:03 > 0:47:07what happens when you cross a radioactive spider with a blender?

0:47:07 > 0:47:09Dead Metal, that's what.

0:47:09 > 0:47:11And Matilda!

0:47:11 > 0:47:13Just have fun.

0:47:13 > 0:47:16Three, two, one...

0:47:16 > 0:47:19Activate!

0:47:19 > 0:47:23OK, so the fun young lady. Didn't Behemoth say there's not much

0:47:23 > 0:47:27Cherub can do to us earlier on in this episode?

0:47:30 > 0:47:33Behemoth looking for a smash and grab victory with that grabber,

0:47:33 > 0:47:34lifted up there.

0:47:34 > 0:47:37Cherub looked like a winged angel earlier on.

0:47:37 > 0:47:42Little bit like a Robot Wars gargoyle in matches now.

0:47:42 > 0:47:45Behemoth using the six-wheel drive there,

0:47:45 > 0:47:48superior drive than all other robots, really.

0:47:48 > 0:47:51They've gone over the top of Cherub.

0:47:51 > 0:47:54It's a dangerous place to be with Dead Metal right behind!

0:47:54 > 0:47:56Well, well, well.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59Anthony Pritchard left himself open there for attacking.

0:47:59 > 0:48:04Now needs work to get back on top in this bout and working hard

0:48:04 > 0:48:08to try and shove Cherub across the arena floor.

0:48:08 > 0:48:11Using the extra... Ah!

0:48:11 > 0:48:13I can't ever remember seeing that before!

0:48:16 > 0:48:19I cannot ever remember someone being stuck underneath the Floor Flipper.

0:48:19 > 0:48:24We're stuck in there! I didn't even know you could get in there!

0:48:25 > 0:48:26Neither did I!

0:48:26 > 0:48:28You're not supposed to go in there

0:48:28 > 0:48:30and the flipper's not supposed to do that.

0:48:30 > 0:48:31This is going to have to be restarted.

0:48:31 > 0:48:34Cherub chomped. We'll go again.

0:48:34 > 0:48:39Three, two, one...

0:48:39 > 0:48:42Activate!

0:48:42 > 0:48:45We restart, then, with two minutes to go now.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48Behemoth was slightly on top for me early on.

0:48:51 > 0:48:53Ooh, the house robot will come out now.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55I think this is a brilliant addition.

0:48:55 > 0:48:58Rogue robots, love it.

0:48:58 > 0:49:02Attacking Cherub. Trying to lever Cherub out, perhaps.

0:49:02 > 0:49:04Dead Metal couldn't do so

0:49:04 > 0:49:07and got banged by Behemoth and will remember that.

0:49:07 > 0:49:09Behemoth has got tagged by Dead Metal.

0:49:12 > 0:49:13Getting out now, Behemoth.

0:49:15 > 0:49:18Don't think Cherub can cause too much damage

0:49:18 > 0:49:22unless Behemoth drives with a full frontal and once again

0:49:22 > 0:49:25gets on the top of Cherub.

0:49:25 > 0:49:27Could be flipped.

0:49:29 > 0:49:33It's very, very tense, it's very close.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36Again, good turn by Toby at the controls of Cherub

0:49:36 > 0:49:38to attack Behemoth.

0:49:38 > 0:49:41Haven't seen much of the grabber so far.

0:49:41 > 0:49:44Who's on top at this stage? Away go Cherub.

0:49:44 > 0:49:47- Just try and...- You've only got 30 seconds to try and make it.

0:49:47 > 0:49:49Get round the side, that's it.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51Trying to look impressive, aggressive, ooh, and again,

0:49:51 > 0:49:54Behemoth, don't think that's the greatest bit of driving

0:49:54 > 0:49:56to get on the top of Cherub.

0:49:56 > 0:50:00Left Behemoth vulnerable, but perhaps an aggressive move

0:50:00 > 0:50:02by Ant at the controls.

0:50:02 > 0:50:06If this goes to the judges, and I'm sure it will now, it's going to be

0:50:06 > 0:50:10very, very close and this could be the decisive moment!

0:50:10 > 0:50:13Both of them taking damage from Dead Metal!

0:50:13 > 0:50:16Who has sustained the most damage?

0:50:16 > 0:50:18Cease is called. Judges will decide.

0:50:18 > 0:50:21- Have we won?- I've no idea.

0:50:21 > 0:50:22I'm really nervous.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25- It just didn't work. We couldn't get under them.- No.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27No, they couldn't get under them.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29Oh, handstand attempted!

0:50:32 > 0:50:36Aggression from Cherub, control by Cherub,

0:50:36 > 0:50:39not very controlled by Behemoth.

0:50:39 > 0:50:41I don't know.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44Behemoth, there was loads of talk about cuddling and hugging.

0:50:44 > 0:50:49Cherub, the only hugs that were being doled out were from Dead Metal

0:50:49 > 0:50:53as he sliced you. What...went wrong?

0:50:53 > 0:50:56We've never tried it before. We tried innovation over function

0:50:56 > 0:50:58and it's not worked very well.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01I mean, I think it was there, in theory it worked.

0:51:01 > 0:51:03You just couldn't seem to get under Cherub,

0:51:03 > 0:51:05it was too low to the ground.

0:51:05 > 0:51:08No, the bottom part moved up slightly. It lifted up too high.

0:51:08 > 0:51:10So there was no coming back from there.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13We got them pushed under the arena flipper as well

0:51:13 > 0:51:15but apparently that doesn't count!

0:51:15 > 0:51:17I mean, they did well to come back from that, I thought.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20They were squashed, and obviously the flipper is there

0:51:20 > 0:51:23to flip and not squash in the opposite direction.

0:51:23 > 0:51:26So, Cherub went in there as the underdog, really.

0:51:26 > 0:51:30Did you realise that Behemoth's weapon wasn't working,

0:51:30 > 0:51:33that whatever their plan was, it wasn't quite going?

0:51:33 > 0:51:36I don't really know what their weapon did, to be honest!

0:51:36 > 0:51:37You didn't know!

0:51:37 > 0:51:40What would your weapon have done had it been working?

0:51:40 > 0:51:43I don't know. Ideally, I wanted to go with the original scoop.

0:51:43 > 0:51:46- OK.- That's all I'm saying.

0:51:46 > 0:51:51Were you worried while little Cherub was lying underneath the flipper?

0:51:51 > 0:51:54Did you think she'd be able to come back?

0:51:54 > 0:51:57Yeah. Because she's strong.

0:51:57 > 0:51:59She is strong!

0:51:59 > 0:52:01OK, shall we go to the results?

0:52:01 > 0:52:03There was no clear winner, obviously,

0:52:03 > 0:52:05because there was no knockout,

0:52:05 > 0:52:08no immobilisation, so it went through to a judges' decision

0:52:08 > 0:52:12and the result has come through. The decision was unanimous

0:52:12 > 0:52:16and the fight and the two points are going to go to...

0:52:16 > 0:52:17Cherub!

0:52:17 > 0:52:20Which means that you're going through to the final, guys!

0:52:20 > 0:52:23- APPLAUSE - Do your little wing thing!

0:52:23 > 0:52:26Hard luck, guys. Well done, always a pleasure to have you in.

0:52:26 > 0:52:29- Thank you so much. - Try something new.

0:52:29 > 0:52:31- We lost someone.- Ant. Stressful.

0:52:31 > 0:52:33Is he upset?

0:52:33 > 0:52:35Of course he is.

0:52:35 > 0:52:38Team captain Ant returns alone to the pits.

0:52:38 > 0:52:42It was a gamble to experiment with a brand-new weapon

0:52:42 > 0:52:43for such a crucial match.

0:52:43 > 0:52:46Was it one that cost them their place in the final?

0:52:48 > 0:52:52Putting a grabber of that type onto the robot for a critical match

0:52:52 > 0:52:55was a very poor decision there.

0:52:55 > 0:52:59Main reason I walked out was I was so annoyed with the rest of the team

0:52:59 > 0:53:02for making that decision not to go with a guaranteed win

0:53:02 > 0:53:04with using the scoop.

0:53:04 > 0:53:07It's proven, and sometimes innovation doesn't pay out.

0:53:07 > 0:53:10Sometimes it's best to use what you know works.

0:53:10 > 0:53:15For Team Cherub, however, this is a dream come true.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18I'm really happy. I'm surprised we've got this far.

0:53:19 > 0:53:22So, our finalists tonight are Eruption.

0:53:22 > 0:53:25Upgraded from last series,

0:53:25 > 0:53:27this flipper has tossed aside the competition,

0:53:27 > 0:53:31dashing the hopes of team after team.

0:53:31 > 0:53:33We're so happy with how it's gone so far,

0:53:33 > 0:53:34it's gone exactly to plan

0:53:34 > 0:53:38and it's exactly what we dreamed of happening with Eruption.

0:53:38 > 0:53:41In the head-to-heads, Michael's masterful driving

0:53:41 > 0:53:44helped him flip all three opponents out of the arena.

0:53:47 > 0:53:48- Yes!- Yes, Michael!

0:53:51 > 0:53:53They face Cherub,

0:53:53 > 0:53:56an unconventional and incredibly hard-wearing lifter bot.

0:53:59 > 0:54:02In their group battle, they proved they weren't afraid

0:54:02 > 0:54:04to take the deadliest robots face on.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07- Did we win?- Yeah.- Yeah!

0:54:09 > 0:54:13Since then, Cherub have taken serious damage in every fight,

0:54:13 > 0:54:16but in the pits, big brother Mark worked tirelessly

0:54:16 > 0:54:20to repair their broken chassis and weapon again and again.

0:54:20 > 0:54:22Since Toby's done such a good job at driving it,

0:54:22 > 0:54:25I want to make sure he's got a robot to actually drive.

0:54:26 > 0:54:30Work that paid off, as Cherub took judges' decisions

0:54:30 > 0:54:33with their controlled and aggressive driving,

0:54:33 > 0:54:35twice winning fights against the odds.

0:54:35 > 0:54:40Can Cherub defy expectations one last time?

0:54:40 > 0:54:43Tonight's final is a fight of young blood.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46In one corner, 18-year-old Michael from Eruption has designed

0:54:46 > 0:54:49and built a robot capable of launching their rivals

0:54:49 > 0:54:50out of the arena.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53In the other corner, 13-year-old Toby from Cherub

0:54:53 > 0:54:57has proved himself to be amongst the best drivers in the competition.

0:54:57 > 0:55:01It's time to find out who goes through to our Grand Final.

0:55:01 > 0:55:03Two young guns. Last time they met

0:55:03 > 0:55:05Cherub suffered the old flip-flop and fly,

0:55:05 > 0:55:06but they did have technical problems.

0:55:06 > 0:55:10Both robots now at full strength, though, for this final fight.

0:55:10 > 0:55:13Roboteers, stand by.

0:55:13 > 0:55:15APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:55:24 > 0:55:29Three, two, one...

0:55:29 > 0:55:30Activate!

0:55:30 > 0:55:33Cherub needs to dance around Eruption

0:55:33 > 0:55:37but I don't think Toby knows the meaning of the word retreat.

0:55:37 > 0:55:39- Sorry, guys. - We died in two seconds!

0:55:39 > 0:55:41And that's the result!

0:55:41 > 0:55:43Job done. Made it look easy.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46The job was done so very, very early on.

0:55:48 > 0:55:49Wow.

0:55:49 > 0:55:52- That's the shortest fight we've ever done.- We flew so high!

0:55:55 > 0:55:58Well, he was brave enough to attack but...

0:55:58 > 0:56:01foolhardy, a little bit naive.

0:56:01 > 0:56:03Let's not say that because he's been brilliant, Toby.

0:56:03 > 0:56:07But from that moment on, you know what's going to happen, don't you?

0:56:07 > 0:56:09Watch for Eruption in the Grand Final.

0:56:10 > 0:56:14This is a robot that could win this series.

0:56:14 > 0:56:17The explosive power of the Eruption

0:56:17 > 0:56:21and they did the job in five seconds.

0:56:21 > 0:56:23APPLAUSE

0:56:25 > 0:56:29Every time I click my finger, an angel gets its wings.

0:56:29 > 0:56:32And that's what happened to Cherub, even though you wrote the words

0:56:32 > 0:56:36"don't flip me" in marker on top of Cherub.

0:56:36 > 0:56:38They didn't... I know. AUDIENCE AWWS

0:56:38 > 0:56:40Oh, stop, come on!

0:56:41 > 0:56:43You fought brilliantly.

0:56:43 > 0:56:48By the way, this introduction is now taking longer than the fight did.

0:56:48 > 0:56:50- Thanks(!)- I'm sorry.

0:56:50 > 0:56:52- How well have you guys done, though? - Well.

0:56:52 > 0:56:54- Did you expect to get all the way to the final on this?- No.

0:56:54 > 0:56:57No, none of you expected to go all the way to the final.

0:56:57 > 0:56:59None of you expected to get all the way through the melee

0:56:59 > 0:57:00and then through all the head-to-heads

0:57:00 > 0:57:03and to pick up loads of points and get all the way to the final.

0:57:03 > 0:57:04You came up against this thing,

0:57:04 > 0:57:06which is on a hot streak at the moment.

0:57:06 > 0:57:10- You should feel very proud of that, I presume.- Yeah.- Yes.

0:57:10 > 0:57:12It was over fast but that was quite impressive.

0:57:12 > 0:57:14Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Cherub, please,

0:57:14 > 0:57:17and the fantastic job they did. APPLAUSE

0:57:17 > 0:57:19You genuinely should be very proud of you all.

0:57:21 > 0:57:24- I mean, I think they're a little shellshocked.- Yeah.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28Have you got somewhere to go?

0:57:28 > 0:57:30- You're in an awful hurry...- Yeah.

0:57:30 > 0:57:32..and aggressively quicker every single time.

0:57:32 > 0:57:35I think it's a dangerous arena and if you stay in there too long,

0:57:35 > 0:57:38you can get pushed into house robots, into hazards.

0:57:38 > 0:57:40So the best way to get through the competition is to just

0:57:40 > 0:57:42win your fights as quickly as you can.

0:57:42 > 0:57:44- So that was the plan. - Absolutely.- Short...

0:57:44 > 0:57:45That's the great thing about a flipper,

0:57:45 > 0:57:47you can just throw them out of the arena

0:57:47 > 0:57:51- and just get the fights done with. - So, can a flipper win the final?

0:57:51 > 0:57:53- Again.- A flipper can win.

0:57:53 > 0:57:56Whether it will not, we don't know, but it can.

0:57:56 > 0:57:59OK, well, listen, we look forward to seeing you again in the final.

0:57:59 > 0:58:01Please give it up for Eruption. Well done.

0:58:01 > 0:58:04APPLAUSE

0:58:04 > 0:58:07Some great competitors here but that's all from Robot Wars tonight.
