0:00:02 > 0:00:04Fighting robots represent probably one of the biggest challenges
0:00:04 > 0:00:07in engineering because there is no perfect design.
0:00:12 > 0:00:1640 robot fighting teams are about to take on one of the most
0:00:16 > 0:00:19intense engineering challenges in the world.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Advice I'd give to roboteers entering the arena is
0:00:22 > 0:00:24don't panic and try not to die.
0:00:27 > 0:00:31To design, build and battle heavyweight fighting robots
0:00:31 > 0:00:33to compete for the ultimate prize.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Through chaotic group battles and fierce head-to-heads,
0:00:42 > 0:00:46new and veteran teams of robot engineers must push their
0:00:46 > 0:00:49reinforced war machines to the limits.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52Their robots are harder, faster, stronger,
0:00:52 > 0:00:56designed for one thing - total destruction in pursuit of victory.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06Welcome to Robot Wars,
0:01:06 > 0:01:08where teams of brilliant engineers bring their
0:01:08 > 0:01:10beautifully-crafted machines
0:01:10 > 0:01:13to wage war in search of glory.
0:01:13 > 0:01:17From the spinners to the flippers, the clusterbots to the axes,
0:01:17 > 0:01:21the goal for all of our teams is to become the new Robot Wars Champion.
0:01:21 > 0:01:25The reality for most is that they'll be going home in a bin bag.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30And if the competition wasn't enough to contend with,
0:01:30 > 0:01:33the bulletproof arena is stacked with hazards and policed by
0:01:33 > 0:01:37the world's angriest machines - the House Robots.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41CHEERING
0:01:41 > 0:01:45This series, the House Robots have gone rogue.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49Now hitting the tyre causes the dial to fall left,
0:01:49 > 0:01:51dropping the pit, or right,
0:01:51 > 0:01:54releasing the House Robots from their corner patrol zones
0:01:54 > 0:02:00to inflict indiscriminate damage across the arena for ten seconds.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02Over four weeks we've seen carnage,
0:02:02 > 0:02:06destruction and roboteers pushed to the very edge as four teams
0:02:06 > 0:02:10have secured their place in next week's grand final.
0:02:10 > 0:02:14Tonight's competitors feature the reigning champions Apollo
0:02:14 > 0:02:17and their archnemesis Carbide.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24They and six other teams will fight through two group battles,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26six head-to-heads and the heat final.
0:02:26 > 0:02:30Only one team can progress for the chance to become the new
0:02:30 > 0:02:32Robot Wars Champion.
0:02:32 > 0:02:36Taking part in tonight's first group battle are...
0:02:46 > 0:02:50The reigning champions can now fire with five tonnes of force.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52They've got one last House Robot to flip
0:02:52 > 0:02:54and they also have a title to defend.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00For some reason it looks chunkier, it looks bigger than it was.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02Yeah, we've upgraded the armour on the side,
0:03:02 > 0:03:06so it's got a little wider, but only a fraction, really.
0:03:06 > 0:03:08Have you kept any of the scars from the last series?
0:03:08 > 0:03:09Yeah, we've got still, at the front there,
0:03:09 > 0:03:12some of the scars from can't abide...
0:03:12 > 0:03:13Sorry, Carbide.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15I get that mixed up.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17Yeah, so we've got a few scars still from that.
0:03:17 > 0:03:18OK. It's Apollo.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20APPLAUSE
0:03:25 > 0:03:29Rusty's weapon is constructed of hardened steel and titanium.
0:03:29 > 0:03:33This local team from Glasgow have never actually driven
0:03:33 > 0:03:36the robot before and it's totally untested in the arena.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40Let's talk about the weapon. It's a flipper, right?
0:03:40 > 0:03:43- It's a flipper weapon. - Yeah. With a bit of a scoop?
0:03:43 > 0:03:45A bit of a scoop so we can get more underneath people.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47And how do you all know each other?
0:03:47 > 0:03:50- We all go to college together. - OK. Studying what?
0:03:50 > 0:03:53- Engineering systems.- Right.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55So pressure's on?
0:03:55 > 0:03:56Just a wee bit.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59OK, brilliant. Give it up, please. Good luck.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08This unique robot with eight armoured petals
0:04:08 > 0:04:10stands at one metre high.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13Ms Nightshade is the competition's tallest.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17One of the joys of getting to the second series of this is that
0:04:17 > 0:04:20the robots are getting weirder looking.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22Is it fast? Is it mobile? Is it...?
0:04:22 > 0:04:25Well, in all honesty, we haven't tested it with petals on
0:04:25 > 0:04:27because we wanted it as a surprise to us.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30- OK. That's a wonderful philosophy. - Yeah.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32You're supposed to surprise us,
0:04:32 > 0:04:34you're not supposed to surprise yourself.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37Yeah, but we just wanted that surprise element for us.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40The best of luck. Ladies and gentlemen, Ms Nightshade.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42Look at that. It's a beautiful thing.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54This dual-weapon robot is capable of 1,000kg of crush
0:04:54 > 0:04:56and has a chainsaw tail.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00So talk me through Coyote.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03So, main weapon on Coyote...this beast here.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05It's a clamp and lift weapon.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08- Right.- So you can grab down onto the opponents and lift them up as well.
0:05:08 > 0:05:09Sir Killalot-style.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Killalot-style, yes.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15Rachel, any weaknesses that you think we might need to be careful of?
0:05:15 > 0:05:17I think it could be the chainsaw, actually.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20Like, see if we get flipped and it lands on the chainsaw, it's done.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23- Can I have a coyote call, please? Go on, Calum.- Not from me.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25I think that's Jamie's job.
0:05:25 > 0:05:26ANGELA HOWLS
0:05:26 > 0:05:27Everybody, coyote call!
0:05:27 > 0:05:29HOWLING
0:05:29 > 0:05:32- Is that what a coyote does? - I don't know.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34I have no idea, but let's go with that.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42As defending champions, Apollo are the marked men in
0:05:42 > 0:05:45a group filled with newcomers with everything to gain.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48Can they unseat the current kings of Robot Wars?
0:05:48 > 0:05:51To find out it's over to Jonathan Pearce.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53Thanks very much, Dara and Angela.
0:05:53 > 0:05:54With Apollo in the arena,
0:05:54 > 0:05:57our first group battle promises to be flipping awesome.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59Battle is fought over three minutes and competitors are out if
0:05:59 > 0:06:02they're immobilised for ten seconds, find themselves flipped out of
0:06:02 > 0:06:06the arena or are flung into the dreaded pit of doom.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09Once cease is called, if both robots are still mobile,
0:06:09 > 0:06:11it's up to our judging panel - Dr Lucy Rogers,
0:06:11 > 0:06:13Professor Sethu Vijayakumar
0:06:13 > 0:06:16and head judge Professor Noel Sharkey - the legend.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19They'll judge based on control, damage and aggression.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21The teams are entering the arena.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25From North Wales - Apollo.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27The boyband of Robot Wars are back.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Apollo is upgraded, it now has 1,000 psi high-pressure flipper.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34They can launch a 110-kilo robot six foot in the air.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37From Glasgow - Rusty.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40This team of engineering students hope to get under
0:06:40 > 0:06:43the competition with their 5mm-thick hardened steel scoop.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47And it's quick too at 14mph.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49From Brighton - Ms Nightshade.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52Katie and Jodie are new to robot building and their robot is
0:06:52 > 0:06:54surrounded with pneumatic hammers to provide them with 360 degree
0:06:54 > 0:06:57defence and when the petals are open it's over two metres wide.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01From Ayrshire - Coyote.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05Coyote's crushing jaws generate up to 1,000 kilos of bite.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07It's a brand-new robot for this series,
0:07:07 > 0:07:09so this is the first test for the team.
0:07:09 > 0:07:15With his clamping jaws and vertical saws, in the arena, it's Dead Metal.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18Three new robots, always good to see that,
0:07:18 > 0:07:21but they're against the champions.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25Roboteers, standby.
0:07:30 > 0:07:36Three, two, one. Activate.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39The start of Apollo's defence.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41Who will they send into orbit?
0:07:41 > 0:07:46Ms Nightshade there with the four petals and spikes and hammers.
0:07:46 > 0:07:50And Apollo's first drive is on the old Rusty bucket.
0:07:50 > 0:07:52And in underneath again.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56Yes!
0:07:56 > 0:08:01And look at the celebrations already for Apollo. And why not?
0:08:01 > 0:08:04And in underneath the ground clearance of Rusty. The big flip.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07"The most powerful flipper in the UK," they say.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12And the unique Ms Nightshade takes off.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18Apollo on the drive.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21This is to end the Coyote bark.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24Apollo looks again to be a leading contender.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27Oh, Ms Nightshade, they're in a bit of flap.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Are they waving goodbye?
0:08:31 > 0:08:32There's the pit release.
0:08:32 > 0:08:34Rogue House Robots.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38Get out the way! Get out of the way, everybody!
0:08:38 > 0:08:41They know, the House Robots know.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44Rogue! Out comes Dead Metal
0:08:44 > 0:08:47to peel away the petals of Ms Nightshade.
0:08:49 > 0:08:54Now what are they going to do here - Apollo? It's all about destruction.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57He loved it! He loved it!
0:08:57 > 0:08:59That's brilliant to see.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03Great attack on Rusty.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05Well, well, well.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08The champions here are in devastating early form.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13Dead Metal still tussling with Ms Nightshade.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16Apollo and Coyote through.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Cease.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22Mate, well done.
0:09:24 > 0:09:28The first attack from Apollo smashing Rusty down.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30Ms Nightshade -
0:09:30 > 0:09:32that's a huge machine to lift up and over like that.
0:09:32 > 0:09:37You can sense the power out there of Apollo again.
0:09:38 > 0:09:42All over the floor the rusty nails.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45If you were going to go out,
0:09:45 > 0:09:48best to go out against the reigning champions.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51- Yeah, absolutely.- And they're so relentless. That's their style.
0:09:51 > 0:09:53They go and they kind of tended to pick on you
0:09:53 > 0:09:56a little bit more than you might have liked.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Is there anything that you could have done where you just...?
0:09:58 > 0:10:00It was the first time actually driving the robot,
0:10:00 > 0:10:03so it was as good as it can go.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06Well, listen, hard luck, guys. The crowd loved you, and well done.
0:10:06 > 0:10:10Coyote, through to the head-to-heads.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14Maybe... That is the reaction, I think, that I would have gone with
0:10:14 > 0:10:17- because it wasn't spectacular. - It wasn't, no.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19There's a few things to improve on, work on,
0:10:19 > 0:10:21but just massive relief to get through that, yeah.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23Well, good luck and well done.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28Mixed responses, I think, we're going to get for this.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30Let's start with yourselves.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32That was, I would say, that was impressive.
0:10:32 > 0:10:35That was a fairly awesome display. You happy with the form you're in?
0:10:35 > 0:10:38Yeah, it's great to finish a fight with both wheels working and we
0:10:38 > 0:10:42didn't have that much luck last year with that, so it's good to be back.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45Tempted to have a little kind of leisure time go at the House Robot?
0:10:45 > 0:10:48- No, we've already had Dead Metal, so...- Yeah, been there, done that.
0:10:48 > 0:10:53Passe to you, passe. Whereas, let me turn to yourselves.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57- How have you enjoyed your journey so far?- I loved it.
0:10:57 > 0:11:01- Really?- It was the first time we tested the pneumatics and the petals
0:11:01 > 0:11:03coming out, and they work really well.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05My commiserations, Ms Nightshade, we won't see you again.
0:11:05 > 0:11:07We will see Apollo, though.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09So round of applause for Apollo, ladies and gentlemen.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11Thanks. Well done, guys.
0:11:15 > 0:11:19The teams head back to the pits to assess the damage and prepare for
0:11:19 > 0:11:21the head-to-heads.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24Apollo have proved they're still the ones to beat.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28- I'm happy days, aren't we? - I'm happy. It's really cold as well,
0:11:28 > 0:11:31so that means the flipper's probably only working at half-power.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33That's only cos he wore two layers, he thinks it's cold.
0:11:33 > 0:11:35Four layers, four layers. Look at that.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37Apollo works a lot better in the warm,
0:11:37 > 0:11:39so that was probably about half-power.
0:11:39 > 0:11:42- Same as you.- We launched him... Will you shut up?
0:11:42 > 0:11:45We were launching them a fair height.
0:11:46 > 0:11:51Coyote are also through, but they face a long list of repairs.
0:11:54 > 0:11:55We need to repair the chainsaw.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58It's taken a bit of a battering there from when Apollo flipped us.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00A massive relief to get through the first round.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03It's so many hours of time and commitment
0:12:03 > 0:12:04to get these things running.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07For it to be potentially over in the first three minutes
0:12:07 > 0:12:09could be quite rough.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13Considering we're up against the reigning champions as well, like...
0:12:13 > 0:12:15Yeah, it could have been a lot worse.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17In our second fight of the night it's...
0:12:27 > 0:12:30Crackers lifts and Smash spins.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33A clever distribution of weight means opponents have to
0:12:33 > 0:12:35destroy both robots to get the team out.
0:12:37 > 0:12:41The rules about this are if more than 55% of your robot
0:12:41 > 0:12:43- is immobilised.- That's correct.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46But you've played it very, very tight with this,
0:12:46 > 0:12:49so you really have to kill both your robots...
0:12:49 > 0:12:52Alex is the clever one that did the maths.
0:12:52 > 0:12:54Smash weighs 54% of the weight limit,
0:12:54 > 0:12:58Crackers weighs 46% of the weight limit, so we're just inside.
0:12:58 > 0:13:00It means we have a massive weapon on,
0:13:00 > 0:13:03or large weapon on one machine, and then more armour on the other.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05I'm genuinely very, very excited.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07I think you've done a really interesting thing.
0:13:07 > 0:13:09Fantastic. Ladies and gentlemen, Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11Thanks very much.
0:13:16 > 0:13:19Last series' runners up have upgraded their feared machine
0:13:19 > 0:13:22and are determined to go the distance this time.
0:13:22 > 0:13:26The deadly blade weights 25kg and is capable of spinning
0:13:26 > 0:13:28at 2,300 revs per minute.
0:13:29 > 0:13:33It seems that Apollo in the previous group battle are kind of
0:13:33 > 0:13:36marked men as the champions.
0:13:36 > 0:13:40You guys, runners up. Do you feel there's a lot of eyes out for you?
0:13:40 > 0:13:43Yeah, we've put in a lot of work this series,
0:13:43 > 0:13:44just to iron out all the problems that we had,
0:13:44 > 0:13:46and hopefully we've fixed all those.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49So we've got a new weapon motor, a new drive.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52It spins up faster to a higher top speed now as well.
0:13:52 > 0:13:53So what's the top speed now?
0:13:53 > 0:13:56250mph in three seconds.
0:13:56 > 0:13:58And it's about 20% more powerful now.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01It would be good to have another pop at Apollo, definitely.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04Please, Carbide, everybody. Good luck.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13Meggamouse boasts a powerful hardened steel flipper,
0:14:13 > 0:14:16as well as four-wheel drive and support from
0:14:16 > 0:14:19a small but deadly wedge of cheese.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24See, on some level I have a problem with this.
0:14:24 > 0:14:27The attempt to make a killing robot look cute.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30It looks cute, but it can pack a punch.
0:14:30 > 0:14:31How big a punch? It's a flipper, isn't it?
0:14:31 > 0:14:35Yeah, it's a flipper. It can launch them about four foot in the air.
0:14:35 > 0:14:37And, of course, you're not even on your own
0:14:37 > 0:14:39cos it's a two-robot system.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41Yeah, we've got a clusterbot. And this one is called Charles.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Charles because he's a piece of cheese.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Yeah, Charles the cheese. - I know all cheese is called Charles.
0:14:46 > 0:14:47So what can Charles do?
0:14:47 > 0:14:50Because of the wedge at the front, he can get under the other robots,
0:14:50 > 0:14:53so Meggamouse can easily get under them and flip them.
0:14:53 > 0:14:55Ladies and gentlemen, Meggamouse.
0:14:55 > 0:14:56APPLAUSE
0:15:00 > 0:15:03Made from an upturned shopping trolley,
0:15:03 > 0:15:06this robot also features two front-mounted spikes.
0:15:06 > 0:15:09The robot is a brain child of a university department
0:15:09 > 0:15:10of engineering.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12What is Trolley Rage made out of?
0:15:12 > 0:15:14Everything that's on here is basically reclaimed.
0:15:14 > 0:15:18So the motors are about 20, 30 years old.
0:15:18 > 0:15:20They came out of a very old wheelchair.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23The drive motors for the axe, similar age,
0:15:23 > 0:15:25so it's pretty much whatever we had lying around the workshops.
0:15:25 > 0:15:27And part of this for you, I mean,
0:15:27 > 0:15:30you're both in the department of engineering in the
0:15:30 > 0:15:33University of Greenwich, is to show people that anyone can do this.
0:15:33 > 0:15:34Well, exactly.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37I mean, what we're trying to persuade is actually young engineers
0:15:37 > 0:15:42- to move on, so it's future engineers.- Fantastic.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45And stuff that we have a tendency to dispose things in this culture
0:15:45 > 0:15:49far too quickly when actually it can be reused and parts still work.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52- Absolutely.- It's an important lesson.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Trolley Rage.
0:15:58 > 0:16:01Carbide is the favourite to make the next round.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04The other three teams will need to survive one of the most
0:16:04 > 0:16:06powerful spinners in the competition.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11Carbide may well be the one to watch in this match,
0:16:11 > 0:16:14but two robots will win a place in the head-to-heads.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16The teams are in the arena.
0:16:16 > 0:16:19From Ripon - Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22Each half of the clusterbot weighs around 54 kilos.
0:16:22 > 0:16:24The boys plan to pick opponents with Crackers
0:16:24 > 0:16:27and then smash them with the spinner of Smash.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29From the Midlands - Carbide.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31Dave and Sam are full-time engineers, although they
0:16:31 > 0:16:35found time to fully upgrade Carbide with its 25-kilo spinning bar.
0:16:35 > 0:16:38They've also upgraded the drive to give them nine horsepower, a push.
0:16:38 > 0:16:41From Derby - Meggamouse.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43Meggamouse has aluminium armour and four-wheel drive.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46At 100 kilos, the team worry its weight might factor against
0:16:46 > 0:16:48them in a fight.
0:16:48 > 0:16:51From Medway in Kent - Trolley Rage.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54Trolley Rage built from an upturned shopping trolley.
0:16:54 > 0:16:56It's a rarity in this competition,
0:16:56 > 0:16:58with its electric axe which they can use to self-right.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07750 kilos of Sir Killalot in the arena for this bout.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18Roboteers, standby.
0:17:24 > 0:17:31Three, two, one. Activate.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34Carbide will start as the favourites, I would imagine.
0:17:34 > 0:17:39With the drive they can get up to 12mph, let's not forget.
0:17:39 > 0:17:41Watch out for Meggamouse.
0:17:42 > 0:17:44Great flipping machine.
0:17:44 > 0:17:46And I'm fascinated to see how the clusterbot
0:17:46 > 0:17:49Crackers 'N' Smash do here.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52There's a bash off Carbide.
0:17:52 > 0:17:57And that could have done enough damage there to end
0:17:57 > 0:18:00the dream of Trolley Rage very early on.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05You can see here the effect of Carbide.
0:18:05 > 0:18:09Any impact from that
0:18:09 > 0:18:12mighty spinning blade will cause so much damage.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16Ah! Running away! Running away! Ah!
0:18:16 > 0:18:18Always worthwhile tactics in Robot Wars.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20The old run away, run away.
0:18:20 > 0:18:24But meanwhile the Carbide boys will want to come in
0:18:24 > 0:18:25and cause more damage.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29The pit release has been activated.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31CROWD CHANT: In the pit! In the pit!
0:18:31 > 0:18:34They want machines down in the pit.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37Poor old Trolley Rage, it never really got going.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40But this is a mightily impressive Carbide machine.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46Oh, look at that!
0:18:46 > 0:18:48Goodness me!
0:18:48 > 0:18:53The Meggamouse wheel was simply lifted into space.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55Go on, back into your hole, Meggamouse.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57Retreat.
0:18:57 > 0:18:59Oh, Carbide.
0:19:02 > 0:19:03Wow!
0:19:04 > 0:19:06Trolley Rage...
0:19:07 > 0:19:10Back to the old supermarket for that trolley.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13- Cease.- Oh, dear.
0:19:13 > 0:19:14We survived.
0:19:14 > 0:19:16We cleared up there, mate.
0:19:19 > 0:19:24Carbide's weight, thickness, speed of the blade so important.
0:19:24 > 0:19:26Crackers was around the floor
0:19:26 > 0:19:29moving quite neatly.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31The damage all caused by Carbide.
0:19:33 > 0:19:37Well, well, well. Right, let's go to the University of Greenwich first.
0:19:37 > 0:19:39What grade would you give yourself for that?
0:19:39 > 0:19:41An A for effort.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43To be honest, I don't think it went too badly overall.
0:19:43 > 0:19:45It certainly moved, it certainly fired.
0:19:45 > 0:19:46Hopefully, it inspires some people to say,
0:19:46 > 0:19:49"Yeah, we can build a robot out of scrap metal that's laying in
0:19:49 > 0:19:52"the scrapyards or wheelchair motors that no-one's going to be using any more.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56- "And we can actually go and build something."- Listen, well done. Congratulations to you.
0:19:56 > 0:19:57My commiserations, though.
0:19:57 > 0:19:59What I give to you I take it away, you're out.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02Whereas you, that's a very interesting set of tactics
0:20:02 > 0:20:04you have here.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07Which is - make the little one run away really quickly.
0:20:07 > 0:20:08They're both really little.
0:20:08 > 0:20:11They're very, very quick. We've got 7kW of power in there
0:20:11 > 0:20:14to zip around and leave our opponents behind,
0:20:14 > 0:20:16which is what we did. Carbide couldn't chase us
0:20:16 > 0:20:19- until we drove into it.- Yes.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21Can you repair them for the next one?
0:20:21 > 0:20:25- I may have a little bit of machining to do.- Really?- Yeah.
0:20:25 > 0:20:27You're through. That's the most important thing.
0:20:27 > 0:20:28I can't believe it.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30Fantastic. Ladies and gentlemen, Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37Meggamouse, not just a pretty face.
0:20:37 > 0:20:38It took some beating.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42Yeah. It took a few hits to get it to die, but...
0:20:42 > 0:20:44Could you have done anything differently, do you think?
0:20:44 > 0:20:47Try and stay out of these guys' way.
0:20:47 > 0:20:49I mean, I think that's going to be a problem for everybody
0:20:49 > 0:20:51moving forward.
0:20:51 > 0:20:53OK. Well done, Meggamouse, we love you.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55Carbide, a dusting of destruction.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58It was like you were gliding around...
0:20:58 > 0:21:00Robots everywhere. I didn't know what to do with it.
0:21:00 > 0:21:04We didn't want to cause too much damage.
0:21:04 > 0:21:05That was you not causing damage?
0:21:05 > 0:21:08- Yeah.- Right. OK.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10There was definitely, as you mentioned before,
0:21:10 > 0:21:13it fires up quicker, it's fiercer than it's ever been before.
0:21:13 > 0:21:15- Louder now as well.- Yeah.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17- It seems pretty scary, doesn't it? - Yeah, I mean,
0:21:17 > 0:21:20you're on the right side of it, so you shouldn't be scared.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22I imagine other people are not entirely happy in
0:21:22 > 0:21:24the pits right now.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26Thank you, guys. Thank you, Meggamouse. Well done.
0:21:26 > 0:21:28- Through to the head-to-heads, Carbide.- Thank you.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34Carbide are through and have enhanced their already
0:21:34 > 0:21:37fearsome reputation.
0:21:37 > 0:21:40Too many robots in there. I was spoilt for choice, really.
0:21:41 > 0:21:45Yeah, we're pretty happy with how it kept spinning up.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47It seems to be all running nicely again,
0:21:47 > 0:21:50so it's definitely a good start for it.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54Underdogs Crackers 'N' Smash are also through,
0:21:54 > 0:21:57but received some major blows from Carbide.
0:21:59 > 0:22:01That's not going back.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04This was the front wedge on Smash.
0:22:04 > 0:22:075 mil stainless steel.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10- And it's bent like a banana. - Yeah, this is before and after.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14That's what it should look like and what it's ended up looking like.
0:22:14 > 0:22:18Crackers' weapon is destroyed and Smash's is seriously damaged.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21- This is fixable. - This is fixable.- Right.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23- Let's get cracking.- Yeah.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25It may be fixable,
0:22:25 > 0:22:28but can they do it in the two-hour repair time allowed?
0:22:28 > 0:22:32So rivals Carbide and Apollo are both through to the next round.
0:22:32 > 0:22:36They're joined by Coyote and Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:22:36 > 0:22:41Our first head-to-head is between Carbide and archnemesis Apollo.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45I'm feeling confident and Dave isn't,
0:22:45 > 0:22:48so that's quite a good average.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51It is. I'm not unconfident. I'm just a bit nervous about it, really,
0:22:51 > 0:22:54cos we know what Carbide's capable of.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56We've just got to literally drive straight into him,
0:22:56 > 0:22:59right at the start of the fight, try and stop its spinning disc
0:22:59 > 0:23:01getting up to full speed and just do that for the whole fight.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03Just keep constantly going into them,
0:23:03 > 0:23:06stopping that spinning disc as much as we can.
0:23:06 > 0:23:10This is the most anticipated fight of the competition.
0:23:10 > 0:23:14Do Apollo have what it takes to defend their Robot Wars crown?
0:23:16 > 0:23:17I'm Dave Young.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19I'm the team captain and we've also got the team engineer
0:23:19 > 0:23:21Mark Dermott of Team Apollo -
0:23:21 > 0:23:23the defending Robot Wars Champions.
0:23:26 > 0:23:27So we're here at Pontin's Prestatyn
0:23:27 > 0:23:30where we met many years ago as Bluecoats.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35Whoa, whoa, whoa, there, old Darla.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37- CROWD:- It's behind you!
0:23:37 > 0:23:39Oh, no, it isn't.
0:23:39 > 0:23:41- CROWD:- Oh, yes, it is.
0:23:41 > 0:23:43HE SCREAMS
0:23:43 > 0:23:45Apollo is upgraded for the next series of Robot Wars.
0:23:45 > 0:23:46We've got new upgraded armour,
0:23:46 > 0:23:49new electronics to make the robot faster and more agile.
0:23:49 > 0:23:53And this year we're going to make it two-times Robot Wars Champions.
0:23:58 > 0:24:02Standing in their way are Carbide, with a point to prove.
0:24:05 > 0:24:06I'm Dave, I'm the driver,
0:24:06 > 0:24:08and Sam's the weapon operator.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13Me and Sam are both qualified engineers working for
0:24:13 > 0:24:15the nation's biggest companies.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18Carbide is the combination of both of our efforts.
0:24:22 > 0:24:26We got quite well known for this death hum that Carbide produces.
0:24:26 > 0:24:29It is terrifying. It scared us.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31I can see why other people are terrified of it as well.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35On the inside, Carbide has been completely re-engineered.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38It's now more powerful, more reliable and more precise.
0:24:38 > 0:24:42So we went back to the drawing board with the motor that powers the weapon.
0:24:42 > 0:24:43We decided we needed to make our own.
0:24:43 > 0:24:46The new one is absolutely micron precision,
0:24:46 > 0:24:48completely to our own design.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51Carbide has a reputation for being the meanest machine around,
0:24:51 > 0:24:53and we want to keep that reputation.
0:24:55 > 0:24:57Our first head-to-head. Apollo against Carbide.
0:24:57 > 0:25:01Two robots at the top of their game and a repeat of last series' final.
0:25:01 > 0:25:05And in the arena, the only House Robot the Apollo boys
0:25:05 > 0:25:08haven't managed to flip - Sir Killalot.
0:25:09 > 0:25:13Roboteers, standby.
0:25:22 > 0:25:27Three, two, one. Activate.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33Now all about the death hum. All about the weaponry.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35And the first attack on Apollo.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37But look at the self-righting mechanism.
0:25:37 > 0:25:38And they're off and running again.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41The champions Apollo, to the left there, Carbide spinning.
0:25:41 > 0:25:45You can hear the death hum whining up to full power.
0:25:45 > 0:25:47Smash it.
0:25:48 > 0:25:52What's happened here? Apollo isn't moving.
0:25:52 > 0:25:54Come on! Leave us alone! Stop it!
0:25:54 > 0:25:57- He's going for the wheels. - That's nasty, that.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59Look. He's going for that wheel.
0:25:59 > 0:26:01The champions are in trouble.
0:26:01 > 0:26:05And that death hum is a glorious noise for Carbide now.
0:26:05 > 0:26:07How come you got control there?
0:26:07 > 0:26:09Don't know. I didn't do that.
0:26:10 > 0:26:11Good work, man.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14I just had that, hell flat out, turn it off.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16What a win for Carbide.
0:26:16 > 0:26:19The champions are beaten in the first head-to-head.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22And now what damage will be sustained by Killalot?
0:26:24 > 0:26:26That crushing claw of Killalot is merciless.
0:26:27 > 0:26:31Houston, we have a problem with Apollo.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36Good early flip by Apollo,
0:26:36 > 0:26:41but the power of the flip turned itself over, then it self-righted.
0:26:41 > 0:26:45But wham, bam, took a slam. How much damage was sustained by that?
0:26:45 > 0:26:49And there, look at the top panel flying off!
0:26:49 > 0:26:53The Carbide weaponry is astonishing.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59Feels tense in here.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02OK, so, you went for it. It did look like you went,
0:27:02 > 0:27:04you almost got in there on the first one.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07I think when we went head-to-head, and we messed up our flip,
0:27:07 > 0:27:09got ourselves caught upside down,
0:27:09 > 0:27:13they came in with a really big hit, stopped our drive.
0:27:13 > 0:27:15And I think it is a 50/50 between us.
0:27:15 > 0:27:16They got the better end of it.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19And Dave again goes for his little tactics while we're dead
0:27:19 > 0:27:21and tries to take our wheels, same as you did last year.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23Sly.
0:27:23 > 0:27:26LAUGHTER
0:27:26 > 0:27:29Now, you, lads. They're saying that was dirty play.
0:27:29 > 0:27:31Yeah, they're going to say that.
0:27:31 > 0:27:34People want to see stuff getting smashed, so that's why we're here.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36OK.
0:27:36 > 0:27:39You guys had been immobilised for more than ten seconds,
0:27:39 > 0:27:41so the three points goes to Carbide.
0:27:43 > 0:27:46It proved to be a brutal fight for Apollo,
0:27:46 > 0:27:49who now know what the improved Carbide is capable of.
0:27:55 > 0:27:58I'd say Apollo was our biggest threat in the competition
0:27:58 > 0:27:59so far that we know about.
0:27:59 > 0:28:01To take them out is brilliant, really.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04I couldn't ask for more. That was the perfect fight for us.
0:28:04 > 0:28:07Apollo now just have two hours to repair what they can,
0:28:07 > 0:28:10but the damage is extensive.
0:28:10 > 0:28:14Our whole robot is basically twisted now,
0:28:14 > 0:28:18so the arm in front, the flipper itself was actually bent,
0:28:18 > 0:28:21so when it dropped down it was actually catching on the side
0:28:21 > 0:28:24of Apollo and not fitting into the slot.
0:28:24 > 0:28:28If they can't smooth out the ripped edges from Carbide's blade,
0:28:28 > 0:28:30their flipper won't work.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32I think we've made it worse.
0:28:32 > 0:28:36- ANGELA:- Next into the arena is clusterbot Crackers 'N' Smash
0:28:36 > 0:28:38versus crusher Coyote.
0:28:41 > 0:28:44Both teams sustained major damage in the group battles
0:28:44 > 0:28:47and have been fighting to get their machines ready.
0:28:47 > 0:28:51Crackers 'N' Smash have had to pull their robots apart
0:28:51 > 0:28:54after taking a number of direct hits from Carbide.
0:28:56 > 0:29:00It's now a race against time to put it all back together again.
0:29:00 > 0:29:04I'm actually going to remove the weapon speed...
0:29:04 > 0:29:07Coyote have serious problems with their chainsaw.
0:29:07 > 0:29:11The chainsaw is a bit of a write-off at the moment, sadly.
0:29:11 > 0:29:14It's quite bent and quite broken, so we'll sacrifice that.
0:29:16 > 0:29:20Time's up for Crackers 'N' Smash and their machines are still in pieces.
0:29:20 > 0:29:23- We're being called into the arena? - Yes.
0:29:23 > 0:29:27No, it will not go together in time, we're going to be weaponless.
0:29:27 > 0:29:29We were very close to having the weapons spinning,
0:29:29 > 0:29:33but there's just fractionally not enough time.
0:29:34 > 0:29:38Coyote no longer has a working chainsaw tail.
0:29:38 > 0:29:41Only the front crushing jaw is active.
0:29:45 > 0:29:47My name's Jamie and I'm the team captain of Coyote.
0:29:47 > 0:29:49We're from Ayrshire.
0:29:49 > 0:29:51With me on the team we've got Rachel Gibson who is responsible for
0:29:51 > 0:29:53the electronics and welding.
0:29:53 > 0:29:56And Calum Jones who does our CNC machining.
0:29:56 > 0:30:00My day job is a domestic gas engineer.
0:30:00 > 0:30:02Coyote is a mean menacing dog from hell.
0:30:02 > 0:30:05It kind of says a lot of strange things about Jamie.
0:30:05 > 0:30:07He's usually a kind of very calm, collected guy,
0:30:07 > 0:30:10but then he comes up with a monster like that.
0:30:14 > 0:30:16The front weapon jaws are a hefty piece of kit.
0:30:16 > 0:30:18They weigh around 45 kilos which is a good percentage of
0:30:18 > 0:30:19the robot's weight.
0:30:19 > 0:30:22So we've got to make sure we've got enough weight left for armour
0:30:22 > 0:30:25to make sure that we can stand up to attacks from the other robots.
0:30:25 > 0:30:29With Coyote, we're not just here to destroy, we're here to scare.
0:30:34 > 0:30:37Rivals Crackers 'N' Smash are facing a battle
0:30:37 > 0:30:39with both weapons out of action.
0:30:39 > 0:30:42A danger they knew they were taking with a clusterbot.
0:30:44 > 0:30:47My name's Alex. I'm a product design engineer.
0:30:47 > 0:30:48I design things for theme parks,
0:30:48 > 0:30:51visitor centres, rollercoasters, things like that.
0:30:52 > 0:30:55The team's made up of myself - I was the lead designer -
0:30:55 > 0:30:57my father Ian and my friend Dave
0:30:57 > 0:30:59who is our second driver.
0:30:59 > 0:31:02And Keith who has become our CNC expert.
0:31:02 > 0:31:06A clusterbot is a machine that's made of two or more parts which
0:31:06 > 0:31:08gives our opponent not just one problem to deal with,
0:31:08 > 0:31:10but multiple issues
0:31:10 > 0:31:12about how you fight something that's in two places at once.
0:31:12 > 0:31:15Having a cluster does present another problem.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18If both robots take a lot of damage we don't just have one robot
0:31:18 > 0:31:21to repair, but two, which could potentially be twice the work.
0:31:21 > 0:31:24Entering Robot Wars was a childhood dream
0:31:24 > 0:31:27and now I'm about to become your worst nightmare.
0:31:34 > 0:31:38In the arena, it's Dead Metal and Matilda,
0:31:38 > 0:31:42with one tonne a flip in those hardened steel tusks.
0:31:42 > 0:31:43Makes me shiver.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52This could well be very, very painful.
0:31:52 > 0:31:58Three, two, one. Activate.
0:32:00 > 0:32:02Crackers 'N' Smash,
0:32:02 > 0:32:06are they to pay the price of twice as much work to be done?
0:32:08 > 0:32:12They didn't have enough time to get the weaponry working.
0:32:12 > 0:32:16And already they're on the defensive and they're in trouble here now.
0:32:16 > 0:32:20Dead Metal slicing in. We love a slice.
0:32:20 > 0:32:21That's nice.
0:32:21 > 0:32:24On to Smash there.
0:32:25 > 0:32:29Smash and Crackers. Pin and smash...
0:32:29 > 0:32:32Well, great tactics, only if the weaponry is working.
0:32:32 > 0:32:38And once again, Smash very nearly in the grips of the House Robots.
0:32:38 > 0:32:41They tried to activate the pit release there.
0:32:41 > 0:32:43They have done.
0:32:43 > 0:32:44Rogue House Robot.
0:32:44 > 0:32:46It's rogue robots.
0:32:46 > 0:32:48Out comes Dead Metal.
0:32:48 > 0:32:52Very low machines, you can see the way they're slipping away at times,
0:32:52 > 0:32:54but he's got him here now.
0:32:55 > 0:32:57On the flame pit.
0:33:01 > 0:33:05Smash absolutely crackers. Hitting his team-mate there.
0:33:07 > 0:33:10It's not just the House Robots that have gone rogue,
0:33:10 > 0:33:13it's the competitors as well. And here comes Matilda
0:33:13 > 0:33:16with a flywheel tail to have a go at Coyote.
0:33:16 > 0:33:19Come on, Matilda.
0:33:19 > 0:33:22And they will stay in that sort of punishment.
0:33:22 > 0:33:25They're trying there to take off the gnarling jaws rated from
0:33:25 > 0:33:28between 750 and 1,000 kilos of punishment.
0:33:30 > 0:33:33We've seen plenty and heard plenty of growls from Coyote.
0:33:36 > 0:33:39And Crackers 'N' Smash are still fighting
0:33:39 > 0:33:43and still proving problematic here.
0:33:43 > 0:33:45Go on! That's it! Oh!
0:33:47 > 0:33:50The tough little nut
0:33:50 > 0:33:54with the wrecked weapons, have used other tactics,
0:33:54 > 0:33:57great driving to stay in here.
0:33:57 > 0:33:59But now they're on the flame pit.
0:33:59 > 0:34:00That wasn't good driving.
0:34:00 > 0:34:02Oh, dear! Now I'm stuck.
0:34:02 > 0:34:04Coyote looks immobile.
0:34:04 > 0:34:08And an immobilisation count has started.
0:34:08 > 0:34:09I can't see any movement out there
0:34:09 > 0:34:11beyond little Crackers.
0:34:14 > 0:34:15Cease.
0:34:18 > 0:34:20Dead Metal gripping Smash in there.
0:34:22 > 0:34:26I thought that was the end of Smash with the damage caused.
0:34:26 > 0:34:28But it wasn't the case, I don't think.
0:34:28 > 0:34:30Held on the flame pit.
0:34:30 > 0:34:32Coyote immobilised.
0:34:34 > 0:34:38A great result. Three points for Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41But they still have to get their weapons working again
0:34:41 > 0:34:44and Dead Metal caused even more damage.
0:34:44 > 0:34:48Hitting the tyre, not getting the pit twice.
0:34:48 > 0:34:50A House Robot coming out...
0:34:50 > 0:34:52Get the House Robot coming out at you.
0:34:52 > 0:34:54It's... I'm sorry...
0:34:54 > 0:34:56- It's terrifying.- It's terrifying.
0:34:56 > 0:34:58- "Oh, dear! There goes my robot." - Yeah.
0:34:58 > 0:35:01Coyote's only weapon sustained damage
0:35:01 > 0:35:03courtesy of Matilda's rear end,
0:35:03 > 0:35:06and they're still to face the reigning champions.
0:35:06 > 0:35:09You can see this rear plate steel's been bent out at an angle and
0:35:09 > 0:35:12broken the weld, so it's not sitting flush on the ground.
0:35:12 > 0:35:15We've found in the group battle with Apollo that the jaws were
0:35:15 > 0:35:18actually really good at getting under their front flipper blade,
0:35:18 > 0:35:20so that was going to be our main tactic,
0:35:20 > 0:35:23but Matilda's kind of put paid to that slightly,
0:35:23 > 0:35:25so we need to a big hammer out, give it a bash
0:35:25 > 0:35:28and get the grinder out and make sure it's nice and razor sharp.
0:35:30 > 0:35:33After the first two head-to-heads,
0:35:33 > 0:35:35the leaderboard looks like this.
0:35:35 > 0:35:37Carbide and Crackers 'N' Smash
0:35:37 > 0:35:39both have three points.
0:35:39 > 0:35:41Apollo and Coyote are both on zero,
0:35:41 > 0:35:43but now go head-to-head
0:35:43 > 0:35:44in the arena.
0:35:47 > 0:35:51Apollo have been working flat out to hammer, bend and angle grind
0:35:51 > 0:35:55their machine back into shape after its tussle with Carbide.
0:35:57 > 0:36:00Coyote are still struggling to manipulate the 10mm steel
0:36:00 > 0:36:02of their crushing jaw.
0:36:05 > 0:36:10Well, we've sustained quite a lot of damage on the flipper itself.
0:36:10 > 0:36:14It's bent, meaning the flipper won't actually fall back into place
0:36:14 > 0:36:17and even the top part of the front has a bend on it.
0:36:17 > 0:36:21So with it being kinked it won't fit flush into Apollo.
0:36:21 > 0:36:25So, yeah, basically it's stuffed at the moment.
0:36:25 > 0:36:28But Dave's on the job. Dave, you OK, mate?
0:36:28 > 0:36:29Yeah, I'm getting there.
0:36:29 > 0:36:31Not a clue. Not a clue.
0:36:31 > 0:36:34Coyote have failed to get the jaw flush to the floor,
0:36:34 > 0:36:36but its teeth are razor sharp.
0:36:38 > 0:36:40It's the moment of truth for Apollo.
0:36:40 > 0:36:44Will their flipper fit back into the robot?
0:36:44 > 0:36:46- Please fit.- No.
0:36:47 > 0:36:49That's better.
0:36:51 > 0:36:53It's not bad.
0:36:55 > 0:36:59Apollo will have to fight with a damaged flipper.
0:36:59 > 0:37:02Will Coyote be able to take advantage and write
0:37:02 > 0:37:05the champions out of the competition altogether?
0:37:05 > 0:37:07It's over to you, Jonathan.
0:37:08 > 0:37:14Three, two, one. Activate.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17So has clueless Dave solved the Apollo problem?
0:37:17 > 0:37:20It didn't look like it really did it.
0:37:20 > 0:37:23With those tactics in mind from the group battle...
0:37:23 > 0:37:25The flipper is working.
0:37:25 > 0:37:30And that is bad news for Coyote. Can they self-right
0:37:30 > 0:37:33using the jaws, the crushing jaws?
0:37:33 > 0:37:35And they go again.
0:37:36 > 0:37:38Another surprise here.
0:37:38 > 0:37:42It looked as if Apollo were down and out. They're far from that.
0:37:44 > 0:37:46And Coyote is whimpering.
0:37:46 > 0:37:48Tossed through the air.
0:37:48 > 0:37:52Don't think Apollo can launch robots six foot in to the air.
0:37:52 > 0:37:58And the Bluecoats here are enjoying a little bit of light entertainment
0:37:58 > 0:37:59against Coyote.
0:38:01 > 0:38:03Killalot does not like us.
0:38:06 > 0:38:09Can they throw them out of the arena?
0:38:09 > 0:38:10Can they get them out?
0:38:10 > 0:38:12They're out.
0:38:13 > 0:38:16Well done. Well done, mate. Well done. Well done.
0:38:16 > 0:38:17Great win for Apollo.
0:38:17 > 0:38:19Champions back in business.
0:38:19 > 0:38:21Oh! What are they doing here?
0:38:21 > 0:38:23They're trying to take on Sir Killalot.
0:38:23 > 0:38:25He's the only House Robot they've never flipped.
0:38:25 > 0:38:28The House Robots want revenge now. In comes Dead Metal.
0:38:28 > 0:38:31You are being daft here, boys. Get out! Get out!
0:38:31 > 0:38:33Run away!
0:38:33 > 0:38:34They're chasing you!
0:38:34 > 0:38:36- Run away!- Yes!
0:38:36 > 0:38:40Run away or you're going to be crushed. Whoa!
0:38:40 > 0:38:42Brilliant win for Apollo, this.
0:38:42 > 0:38:44That's a mighty, mighty flip.
0:38:44 > 0:38:46They tried to flip Killalot.
0:38:46 > 0:38:48Not going to get away with that.
0:38:48 > 0:38:50That was almost suicidal if Killalot's got a long memory.
0:38:50 > 0:38:52But this was the end of Coyote.
0:38:54 > 0:38:56Now, that's what I'm talking about.
0:38:56 > 0:38:59- Woohoo! Did you like it? - Yeah.- Did you guys like it?
0:38:59 > 0:39:00CHEERING
0:39:00 > 0:39:03Yes! I'll come back to you.
0:39:03 > 0:39:06Lads, I'm sorry. Not such a happy story.
0:39:06 > 0:39:08It's fine.
0:39:08 > 0:39:10We got a flip in and the top jaw broke away,
0:39:10 > 0:39:12so the jaw was just dangling.
0:39:12 > 0:39:14So just a bit disastrous, really.
0:39:14 > 0:39:15OK, so what's the plan now?
0:39:15 > 0:39:18Are we going to be able to patch it back together and come out...?
0:39:18 > 0:39:20I hope so because we're fighting Carbide next.
0:39:20 > 0:39:24- It might be its final farewell, but...- This is horrendous.
0:39:24 > 0:39:27Fine. But you know what? You've got nothing to lose next fight
0:39:27 > 0:39:28against Carbide,
0:39:28 > 0:39:32and sometimes that's when you dig deep and you get something.
0:39:32 > 0:39:33Yeah.
0:39:33 > 0:39:36Keep telling yourself that.
0:39:36 > 0:39:38- This was the old Apollo.- Yeah.
0:39:38 > 0:39:40I mean, Apollo looks a bit damaged,
0:39:40 > 0:39:43there's gaffer tape holding him together. It's, you know...
0:39:43 > 0:39:45The arm on the flipper, because it is a bit off,
0:39:45 > 0:39:48I think that has affected it flipping higher.
0:39:48 > 0:39:51And do you think you can get that sorted before the next battle?
0:39:51 > 0:39:52Yeah, I think so.
0:39:52 > 0:39:54He says no. His face is like, "Absolutely not.
0:39:54 > 0:39:56"We are as good as we're going to be."
0:39:56 > 0:39:58Of course we can. Maybe not.
0:39:58 > 0:40:01Right, OK. Three points for you guys.
0:40:01 > 0:40:03- Well done. Well done. And commiserations.- Thank you.
0:40:03 > 0:40:06- Cheers, guys.- Get in there.
0:40:11 > 0:40:15Team Coyote took a beating, but there's no way they're giving up.
0:40:17 > 0:40:20I think the main thing we need to do is get another bolt up
0:40:20 > 0:40:22for this actuator.
0:40:22 > 0:40:25They've already lost their chainsaw, and after being thrown around by
0:40:25 > 0:40:27the reigning champions,
0:40:27 > 0:40:30their primary weapon is now in serious danger.
0:40:30 > 0:40:33Apollo flipped us a couple of times and then this jaw here,
0:40:33 > 0:40:36this is the actuator that powers it, and there's supposed to be
0:40:36 > 0:40:37a bolt that goes through there
0:40:37 > 0:40:40into that arm to hold it in place. And that's obviously disappeared,
0:40:40 > 0:40:44so it just went downhill from there, really.
0:40:44 > 0:40:47While the teams are busy with last-minute repairs,
0:40:47 > 0:40:49I've caught up with one of our judges,
0:40:49 > 0:40:52Professor of Robotics Sethu Vijayakumar.
0:40:52 > 0:40:55This is part of a very famous robot.
0:40:55 > 0:40:57What's so significant about this robot here?
0:40:57 > 0:41:01It's part of a new collaboration with the Nasa Johnson Space Center.
0:41:01 > 0:41:06We are involved with a project about sending a humanoid robot to Mars.
0:41:06 > 0:41:10The critical issue surely is what it sees around it,
0:41:10 > 0:41:11so for it to navigate the landscape.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14You and me take it for granted that when we look around
0:41:14 > 0:41:17we can actually make a sense of what's around us,
0:41:17 > 0:41:19figure out where there's empty space, where there's a doorway.
0:41:19 > 0:41:23You can figure out what to open, what to manipulate, what to grasp.
0:41:23 > 0:41:25But for a robot to do that is quite hard.
0:41:25 > 0:41:29And this equipment that you see here is an attempt at doing that
0:41:29 > 0:41:30in a very clever way.
0:41:30 > 0:41:34It's got a spinning laser, which is basically figuring out
0:41:34 > 0:41:36the depth information about what is in front of it.
0:41:36 > 0:41:39It's essentially recognising faces,
0:41:39 > 0:41:43it's essentially recognising texture, it's fusing depth
0:41:43 > 0:41:47information with texture and colour and it's creating a whole percept.
0:41:47 > 0:41:48Before the astronaut arrives,
0:41:48 > 0:41:51makes the whole problem of exploration much more easier.
0:41:51 > 0:41:53That's incredible. Thank you very much, Dr Sethu.
0:41:56 > 0:42:00The next battle is Carbide versus Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:42:04 > 0:42:06Both teams are in the pits,
0:42:06 > 0:42:09and Dave and Sam are making final tweaks to Carbide.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12Crackers 'N' Smash could be quite an awkward one
0:42:12 > 0:42:14cos they're just too low for us to damage.
0:42:14 > 0:42:15Probably just skim across the top.
0:42:15 > 0:42:18But if we do get a bite on it, it will go flying.
0:42:18 > 0:42:22In the group battle, Crackers 'N' Smash's weapons took a beating.
0:42:23 > 0:42:27So the team are trying to amend their machine to make them as
0:42:27 > 0:42:31low as possible by going into the arena with no weapons at all.
0:42:31 > 0:42:33We're going in without the weapons.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35We know they're going to get torn off,
0:42:35 > 0:42:38so it's a pure three-minute survival match.
0:42:38 > 0:42:41The team are taking a monumental risk.
0:42:41 > 0:42:44Are they about to be completely destroyed by the most
0:42:44 > 0:42:46powerful machine in the competition?
0:42:48 > 0:42:49Three...
0:42:49 > 0:42:52As long as you can, don't take any hits.
0:42:52 > 0:42:54- As long as you can.- Activate.
0:42:54 > 0:42:57Very sly tactics here from Crackers 'N' Smash -
0:42:57 > 0:43:00just stay away from that punishing blade.
0:43:00 > 0:43:02Well, they haven't managed it there.
0:43:02 > 0:43:04And, actually, they used the angle, Carbide there,
0:43:04 > 0:43:08rode up on Crackers and smashed into Smash.
0:43:08 > 0:43:10That's interesting.
0:43:10 > 0:43:13Can Crackers 'N' Smash get away?
0:43:13 > 0:43:16I'm giving it all I've got and it's not driving.
0:43:16 > 0:43:19There's control problems here with Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Down goes the pit release.
0:43:22 > 0:43:27Well, the Carbide spinning blade is capable of thrashing these
0:43:27 > 0:43:29two little bots.
0:43:29 > 0:43:32Whoa! How about that?
0:43:32 > 0:43:35They caused massive problems to the arena wall as well, look.
0:43:35 > 0:43:39- Cease. - It smashed a panel.
0:43:39 > 0:43:42As it's potentially dangerous to continue when
0:43:42 > 0:43:45the arena sustains any damage, the match is paused.
0:43:45 > 0:43:48The judges discuss the team's performance
0:43:48 > 0:43:50while the arena is repaired.
0:43:50 > 0:43:53So far it's been another outstanding performance of awesome power
0:43:53 > 0:43:55from Carbide.
0:43:56 > 0:44:00Stay out of trouble, Crackers 'N' Smash. You didn't manage it.
0:44:00 > 0:44:02And again. Whoa!
0:44:02 > 0:44:05Away goes Smash.
0:44:05 > 0:44:08Crumples into the arena sidewall with such power and destroyed it.
0:44:10 > 0:44:12Nice.
0:44:14 > 0:44:17The arena is almost repaired, but the match will not be
0:44:17 > 0:44:20continuing as Crackers 'N' Smash have some news.
0:44:22 > 0:44:25So we're going to formally forfeit the fight to Carbide.
0:44:25 > 0:44:28And then will the weapons come back for Apollo?
0:44:28 > 0:44:30They're working. Both the weapons work.
0:44:30 > 0:44:33But if we put them on now, well, you saw what happened.
0:44:33 > 0:44:35They would be gone.
0:44:35 > 0:44:38It's another tactical decision from Crackers 'N' Smash
0:44:38 > 0:44:42who decide to forfeit the three points instead of risking
0:44:42 > 0:44:44even further damage from Carbide.
0:44:44 > 0:44:48They will, though, have to repair both their robots in time for
0:44:48 > 0:44:50their next head-to-head against Apollo.
0:44:50 > 0:44:54The good news is the 5mm hardened steel armour
0:44:54 > 0:44:57has saved the internal mechanisms.
0:44:57 > 0:44:59- One brick of a robot.- Sorry?
0:44:59 > 0:45:01The drive system's fine.
0:45:01 > 0:45:04Mechanically, the entire robot is fine,
0:45:04 > 0:45:06which also means we can fight Apollo
0:45:06 > 0:45:09and we can fight Apollo properly.
0:45:09 > 0:45:10So, I mean,
0:45:10 > 0:45:12they're probably going to get under us really easily,
0:45:12 > 0:45:14but at least we can give it a good shot.
0:45:16 > 0:45:18Coyote have fixed their crushing jaw
0:45:18 > 0:45:22and are preparing their tactics to face Carbide.
0:45:22 > 0:45:24We can get round the back of him maybe,
0:45:24 > 0:45:26lift him up and dig the blade into the floor.
0:45:26 > 0:45:29- Perhaps that can be a tactic. - If we do get a hold of him,
0:45:29 > 0:45:31we could potentially do anything we want with it.
0:45:31 > 0:45:33- That's the thing.- Yeah.
0:45:37 > 0:45:39Coyote is battle ready once again.
0:45:39 > 0:45:42They may be facing a ruthless machine,
0:45:42 > 0:45:46but they're brave enough to take them on.
0:45:46 > 0:45:47Carbide against Coyote.
0:45:47 > 0:45:50Coyote's heavily armoured front may tackle Carbide's front blade.
0:45:50 > 0:45:53If they can stop the blade spinning they might be in for a chance.
0:45:53 > 0:45:55They have to win.
0:45:56 > 0:45:58Oh!
0:45:58 > 0:46:03You needn't have bottle when you've got a machine that can flick away
0:46:03 > 0:46:08the current heat favourites like that.
0:46:08 > 0:46:12Not just about bottle, about durability, about tactics.
0:46:12 > 0:46:14You got your tactics wrong there, though.
0:46:14 > 0:46:16Oh, no! Right into Killalot!
0:46:16 > 0:46:18In the CPZ.
0:46:18 > 0:46:20Killalot's area.
0:46:20 > 0:46:22Oh, dear. They started so well.
0:46:24 > 0:46:27That will cause damage - flame pit.
0:46:27 > 0:46:29The jaw's dangling one moment, now gone.
0:46:29 > 0:46:33No chainsaw. And Carbide will slam.
0:46:33 > 0:46:35A few perilous moments,
0:46:35 > 0:46:39I guess, part caused by Carbide's own front flip tactics, really.
0:46:41 > 0:46:44And they go in with that death hum and slam.
0:46:44 > 0:46:47They can also spin themselves away.
0:46:47 > 0:46:49Cease.
0:46:49 > 0:46:51- Is it dead now?- Yeah.
0:46:52 > 0:46:55A scare for Carbide, but no more than that.
0:46:55 > 0:46:57Good work by Coyote.
0:46:57 > 0:46:59But then in there...
0:46:59 > 0:47:02Is that where the damage was caused?
0:47:02 > 0:47:05Problems for the electronics after the flame pit.
0:47:09 > 0:47:11Coyote are eliminated,
0:47:11 > 0:47:15but these worthy competitors are happy to go out in a blaze of glory.
0:47:15 > 0:47:18HE PRETENDS TO SOB, SHE LAUGHS
0:47:18 > 0:47:20Total annihilation would be the best way to describe
0:47:20 > 0:47:23- what's happened here. - Modern art now.
0:47:23 > 0:47:26Yeah, I'll sell it for a fortune to fund the next robot.
0:47:26 > 0:47:30That last battle means the leaderboard looks like this.
0:47:30 > 0:47:33At the top and through to tonight's final are Carbide.
0:47:33 > 0:47:35But who will they face?
0:47:35 > 0:47:38Both Apollo and Crackers 'N' Smash are on three points,
0:47:38 > 0:47:42which means their fate rests on this final head-to-head.
0:47:42 > 0:47:44Will it be the underdogs Crackers 'N' Smash,
0:47:44 > 0:47:47or can champions Apollo go through?
0:47:49 > 0:47:51It's crunch time for Apollo,
0:47:51 > 0:47:56who are still struggling to recover from their fight with Carbide.
0:47:56 > 0:47:59They're trying to smooth out the flipper as best they can
0:47:59 > 0:48:01so that it fires on full power.
0:48:02 > 0:48:06Thankfully, Carbide has done as much damage to Apollo as he's done
0:48:06 > 0:48:09to us, so we have a chance.
0:48:10 > 0:48:13The team have got both weapons working for the first time
0:48:13 > 0:48:15since the group battle.
0:48:15 > 0:48:18But they can't test them properly until they're in the arena.
0:48:18 > 0:48:21You need to win this, both of you.
0:48:21 > 0:48:23So whoever wins this is through to the final.
0:48:23 > 0:48:26Yeah, I think it's one of those where they may feel that they're
0:48:26 > 0:48:29the underdogs, but we've gone through a lot of work on our robot.
0:48:29 > 0:48:32There are two of them. They're quite low to the ground.
0:48:32 > 0:48:34They can probably get under us as well,
0:48:34 > 0:48:37so we're not that confident, to be honest with you.
0:48:37 > 0:48:41As reigning champions, is there added pressure?
0:48:41 > 0:48:43Yes, massively. And we're a big target for everybody.
0:48:43 > 0:48:45Everybody wants to have a go at Apollo.
0:48:45 > 0:48:47Right, give it up for Apollo.
0:48:47 > 0:48:50CHEERING
0:48:50 > 0:48:53You could get into the final with this.
0:48:53 > 0:48:56You could get a rematch with Carbide.
0:48:56 > 0:48:58You're low, you can't get under it,
0:48:58 > 0:49:01or Apollo could flip you out of the building.
0:49:01 > 0:49:03That's the other thing cos you're tiny
0:49:03 > 0:49:05and it's very powerful.
0:49:05 > 0:49:08So we're either in for the high jump or we could potentially bring
0:49:08 > 0:49:10about the biggest upset by knocking out the current champions.
0:49:10 > 0:49:14That would be insane. Good luck. It's all to play for.
0:49:14 > 0:49:16You could be in the final as well.
0:49:16 > 0:49:18Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for both Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:49:18 > 0:49:22CHEERING
0:49:22 > 0:49:24- Three...- Here we go.
0:49:24 > 0:49:26Let's get into the final. Let's have fun.
0:49:26 > 0:49:27Activate.
0:49:27 > 0:49:30Can Crackers 'N' Smash compound the tipsters against Apollo?
0:49:30 > 0:49:33Or could these bitesize robots be launched into space?
0:49:33 > 0:49:37I've got my crash helmet on, that's for sure.
0:49:37 > 0:49:40The weaponry of Crackers ineffective,
0:49:40 > 0:49:42so Smash comes in as well.
0:49:42 > 0:49:48Smash with the high spinning weapon, very fast spinner.
0:49:50 > 0:49:53Pit released.
0:49:53 > 0:49:56I'm not too sure they're strong enough to push Apollo in there.
0:49:56 > 0:49:58I don't think they are.
0:49:58 > 0:50:04Apollo with very experienced championship-winning drivers.
0:50:04 > 0:50:07Smash is in the clutches of Dead Metal. Gets away.
0:50:10 > 0:50:14And Crackers smashed by the lift, straight into Dead Metal.
0:50:14 > 0:50:16Good flip. The flipper is working.
0:50:16 > 0:50:20Maybe not perfectly, but it is working.
0:50:20 > 0:50:23And Crackers, I think, is over and out.
0:50:23 > 0:50:25Oh!
0:50:25 > 0:50:28And they toss him through the air like a little leaf.
0:50:28 > 0:50:29And in comes Dead Metal.
0:50:32 > 0:50:34Look at the power of this.
0:50:34 > 0:50:38Huge, huge lift across the arena floor.
0:50:40 > 0:50:43- We think that Crackers is gone. - Rogue House Robots.
0:50:43 > 0:50:45They've set the House Robots rogue.
0:50:48 > 0:50:51Oh! The sparks fly.
0:50:54 > 0:50:57Look, Killalot's running away from Apollo.
0:50:57 > 0:51:00Go, go, go, go!
0:51:00 > 0:51:01Oh, they tried to flip Sir Killalot.
0:51:01 > 0:51:05Now, all this is good and fun and joyous for you, boys -
0:51:05 > 0:51:09remember that the House Robots never forget.
0:51:09 > 0:51:12Now they're in on the better business.
0:51:12 > 0:51:15Getting Smash almost out of the arena.
0:51:15 > 0:51:16- Cease.- Cease is called.
0:51:16 > 0:51:19Well done, man. Well done.
0:51:19 > 0:51:22We survived three minutes with Apollo.
0:51:24 > 0:51:28They've been brilliant competitors, Crackers 'N' Smash.
0:51:28 > 0:51:32That was the end of Crackers, on to Dead Metal.
0:51:33 > 0:51:36But the other machine was still alive,
0:51:36 > 0:51:38so they're allowed to continue.
0:51:38 > 0:51:40They became a plaything.
0:51:41 > 0:51:45Unsurprisingly, the judges have awarded two points to Apollo.
0:51:47 > 0:51:49Here we go again. Carbide.
0:51:49 > 0:51:50# We're in the final
0:51:50 > 0:51:53# We're in the final. #
0:51:53 > 0:51:55But it doesn't look good.
0:51:55 > 0:51:57Apollo are triumphant,
0:51:57 > 0:52:00meaning that Crackers 'N' Smash leave the competition,
0:52:00 > 0:52:04but have proved that clever tactics and two tough little robots
0:52:04 > 0:52:06will get you far.
0:52:06 > 0:52:09- Had a great fight there. Fantastic fun.- That was...
0:52:09 > 0:52:12Surviving three minutes with Apollo was...
0:52:12 > 0:52:14frankly surprising.
0:52:14 > 0:52:18I'm quite glad in some ways cos I don't have to fight Carbide again.
0:52:18 > 0:52:21We've managed to get in there and mix it with the best.
0:52:23 > 0:52:27The final leaderboard sees Coyote on zero points.
0:52:27 > 0:52:29Crackers 'N' Smash leave with three.
0:52:29 > 0:52:31Apollo finished with five points,
0:52:31 > 0:52:34which means they will get another chance to fight their rivals
0:52:34 > 0:52:38Carbide who topped the table with nine points.
0:52:38 > 0:52:43The annals of history are lined with fearsome rivals in titanic battles.
0:52:43 > 0:52:46This is no less. A repeat of last year's grand finale.
0:52:46 > 0:52:50Ladies and gentlemen, the brilliant reigning champions Apollo
0:52:50 > 0:52:53versus the robot feared by all - Carbide.
0:52:56 > 0:52:59The road to the final has proved deadly for all
0:52:59 > 0:53:02but these two robot fighting teams.
0:53:06 > 0:53:10The relentless power of last series' runners up Carbide
0:53:10 > 0:53:13left their group battle opponents in a state of shock.
0:53:14 > 0:53:18Too many robots in there. Spoilt for choice, really.
0:53:18 > 0:53:21There was no mercy shown against their old foe Apollo.
0:53:24 > 0:53:27Carbide has taken no prisoners.
0:53:27 > 0:53:29Smash it.
0:53:31 > 0:53:34They've left a trail of mangled metal in their wake
0:53:34 > 0:53:37on their march to the heat final.
0:53:41 > 0:53:43It smashed the panel.
0:53:45 > 0:53:49Standing in their way to a place in the series final is Apollo.
0:53:51 > 0:53:54The reigning champions left a trail of destruction
0:53:54 > 0:53:57- in their group battle.- Yes!
0:54:00 > 0:54:01In their first head-to-head,
0:54:01 > 0:54:06Carbide took the upper hand and Apollo were badly beaten.
0:54:06 > 0:54:09Come on! Leave us alone! Stop it!
0:54:09 > 0:54:10That's nasty, that, isn't it?
0:54:15 > 0:54:19Apollo made a fearsome return to form against competitors...
0:54:19 > 0:54:20Well done, man. Well done.
0:54:20 > 0:54:23..but they still failed to flip Sir Killalot.
0:54:24 > 0:54:27Run away! Run away!
0:54:27 > 0:54:32Do they still have what it takes to overcome Carbide?
0:54:34 > 0:54:36Apollo took the trophy in the last series.
0:54:36 > 0:54:38Can Carbide get their revenge?
0:54:38 > 0:54:43They look the more improved machine here.
0:54:43 > 0:54:46Roboteers, standby.
0:54:46 > 0:54:49The Bluecoats are making a song and dance of getting into the final.
0:54:49 > 0:54:52But Carbide say everything's going to plan.
0:54:57 > 0:55:03Three, two, one. Activate.
0:55:03 > 0:55:05Apollo, they're attacking Carbide.
0:55:05 > 0:55:08This is a great final building up here right now to this heat.
0:55:08 > 0:55:10Two mighty machines.
0:55:10 > 0:55:12Two of the most powerful machines we've seen in this series of
0:55:12 > 0:55:14Robot Wars, that's for sure.
0:55:17 > 0:55:18Sparks flying.
0:55:18 > 0:55:23They're trying to dent and bash and buckle that front flipper certainly.
0:55:25 > 0:55:27Oh, listen. Listen.
0:55:27 > 0:55:31Can you hear it? There's that death hum of Carbide.
0:55:31 > 0:55:34Is the flipper working now for Apollo?
0:55:34 > 0:55:37Oh, look at the disc, now up to speed!
0:55:37 > 0:55:39The banshee hum.
0:55:39 > 0:55:41Flip! We need to.
0:55:41 > 0:55:45I think they're in trouble here, the defending champions.
0:55:45 > 0:55:48You can see the sparks flying from that onslaught from Carbide.
0:55:48 > 0:55:51And Apollo took mighty, mighty punishment.
0:55:54 > 0:55:59Apollo limited now certainly in weaponry and immobile.
0:55:59 > 0:56:01Oh!
0:56:01 > 0:56:04- We didn't get any flips at all.- No.
0:56:05 > 0:56:07- Cease.- Apollo gone.
0:56:07 > 0:56:12That's some big hits in there. Good driving, man. Good driving.
0:56:14 > 0:56:16What a win for Carbide.
0:56:16 > 0:56:21Revenge is sweet, not just for Carbide, but for Killalot.
0:56:21 > 0:56:28I'm afraid, Apollo, everything you get now you deserve.
0:56:28 > 0:56:30On to the flame pit.
0:56:30 > 0:56:32Naughty boy.
0:56:32 > 0:56:36No! No!
0:56:39 > 0:56:41That was a good attack from Apollo.
0:56:41 > 0:56:45Getting in underneath and denying any power from the Carbide blade,
0:56:45 > 0:56:48but there we saw damage sustained.
0:56:48 > 0:56:51Again, a good drive by Apollo, so Carbide up and over
0:56:51 > 0:56:54and not really causing any problems at that stage.
0:56:54 > 0:56:56A little bit of spark there.
0:56:58 > 0:57:00But this is where the major damage was caused.
0:57:00 > 0:57:04And from that moment on, no way back for Apollo, no way back at all.
0:57:04 > 0:57:08Great final. Two brilliant teams.
0:57:08 > 0:57:10It feels like it was only yesterday that we were in this very
0:57:10 > 0:57:15same spot presenting you with the trophy for winning the first series.
0:57:15 > 0:57:18You're not getting past this episode. What happened out there?
0:57:18 > 0:57:23I mean, we've got to the end of this episode, and fighting Carbide again
0:57:23 > 0:57:26in the final is just epic and we just didn't get the flipper working.
0:57:26 > 0:57:27I mean, you took the blows.
0:57:27 > 0:57:29And you were underneath him a few times and were waiting for
0:57:29 > 0:57:32the button to be pressed, and just nothing happened.
0:57:32 > 0:57:34No. The flipper just didn't want to go.
0:57:34 > 0:57:36We tested it as we put in the arena, it worked absolutely fine.
0:57:36 > 0:57:38And it just got a bit of stage fright
0:57:38 > 0:57:40once it went out in the arena.
0:57:40 > 0:57:42- Well done to Carbide as well. - Absolutely.
0:57:42 > 0:57:45Indeed. Very different story from last time.
0:57:45 > 0:57:50I mean, the remnants there, it's a bit pathetic when you look at it.
0:57:50 > 0:57:52What a monster of a robot you've built.
0:57:52 > 0:57:54Yes, it's pretty relentless now.
0:57:54 > 0:57:57I think we've tinkered away and seem to have got it right.
0:57:57 > 0:58:00- Can you go all the way this time? - I don't know. It gets hard now.
0:58:00 > 0:58:04Stop it. This is same old, "Oh, I don't know. We'll see what happens."
0:58:04 > 0:58:08- Give it up for Carbide. - Well done, Carbide.
0:58:08 > 0:58:11So, the king is dead. Long live the king.
0:58:11 > 0:58:13Yes, it's a new era here. Our champions are already gone.
0:58:13 > 0:58:16Congratulations to Carbide. Farewell to Apollo.
0:58:16 > 0:58:21- And farewell from all of us here on Robot Wars.- Goodnight.- Goodnight.
0:58:21 > 0:58:23Next time on Robot Wars...
0:58:23 > 0:58:26Winning Robot Wars will be a dream come true.
0:58:26 > 0:58:28The robot re-joining the competition is...
0:58:28 > 0:58:31OK, that is a first. We've never seen that before.
