0:01:48 > 0:01:50You're fired. You're fired.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Believe me, I believe you.

0:02:22 > 0:02:23..the ultimate grilling.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26I think you're the type of guy that feels you can write

0:02:26 > 0:02:29a lot of bullshit and no-one will see the truth underneath.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32I've thrown it away. I want my mum.

0:02:32 > 0:02:33In the boardroom...

0:02:33 > 0:02:37Joseph, you've got to show me a path as to how this can get big.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39..the inquisition continued.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40Vana, I ain't worried.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44£250,000 is like a spit in the ocean.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46For Charleine, some parting advice.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Why don't you just carry on in Plymouth? You're known there,

0:02:49 > 0:02:50you developed your business there.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53With regret, Charleine, you're fired.

0:02:53 > 0:02:54Gary's business...

0:02:54 > 0:02:58A virtual party is when you can actually beam people in.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- It's like virtual meetings. - Skype, isn't it?

0:03:00 > 0:03:01..baffled.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Don't get it. You're fired.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06And thoroughbred Richard...

0:03:06 > 0:03:07You've done extremely well.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10You were in the winning team eight times.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12..fell at the final hurdle.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15I'm not going into business with anybody that's got some other

0:03:15 > 0:03:17deal on the side, so, Richard...

0:03:17 > 0:03:18He became...

0:03:18 > 0:03:19You're fired.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22..this 16th casualty of the boardroom.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Very well done, the pair of you. You're in the final.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Now, just two remain...

0:03:27 > 0:03:29- Well done, Vana.- Great job. - So happy.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33..to fight it out to become Lord Sugar's business partner.

0:03:43 > 0:03:447am.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50PHONE RINGS

0:03:53 > 0:03:54- Hello?- 'Good morning.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56'Lord Sugar would like you to meet him at City Hall.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58'The cars will be with you in 20 minutes.'

0:03:58 > 0:04:00For the finalists...

0:04:00 > 0:04:04- We've to be at City Hall in 20 minutes. Ready?- I'm getting up.- OK.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06..it's head-to-head.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Vana's a very credible candidate,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11but I'm going to try my best and I'm here to win.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15We are not here for the same reasons.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18I'm here because I want to create an impact on the world.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21He's here because he wants to become a billionaire.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27On the banks of the Thames...

0:04:28 > 0:04:30..City Hall.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36London's political powerhouse

0:04:36 > 0:04:39and location for Lord Sugar's final showdown.

0:04:56 > 0:04:57Good morning.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59JOSEPH AND VANA: Good morning, Lord Sugar.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Only one of you can receive my £250,000 investment,

0:05:03 > 0:05:09so this is your last opportunity to convince me it should be you.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13And for your final task I want you to launch your businesses.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17You need to research your market and produce a digital billboard

0:05:17 > 0:05:18and promotional video.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20And in a few days' time,

0:05:20 > 0:05:25you'll be back here presenting to 200 industry specialists.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Well, there's a lot to do, so I've arranged some help.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Vana, heads or tails?

0:05:41 > 0:05:42Heads.

0:05:42 > 0:05:43Tails.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Joseph, choose your first assistant.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Erm, I'm going to go with Gary, please.

0:05:55 > 0:05:56I'm going to go with Richard.

0:06:00 > 0:06:01Brett, please.

0:06:03 > 0:06:04Charleine.

0:06:05 > 0:06:06Elle, please.

0:06:09 > 0:06:10Ruth, please.

0:06:12 > 0:06:13Mergim, please.

0:06:16 > 0:06:17Natalie.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19I wanted you anyway.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20- VANA LAUGHS - Promise.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Now, Vana, you really need to prove to me that there is

0:06:25 > 0:06:28a market out there for your dating business

0:06:28 > 0:06:32and that my £250,000 won't be quickly swallowed up.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37And, Joseph, you have a small-time plumbing business at the moment.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41You're going to have to explain how you're going to grow that to

0:06:41 > 0:06:44make it into a substantial company.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47So I look forward to seeing you all in a couple of days' time.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48Off you go.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Two days to prove plans can become profitable partnerships.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Great to see you again, boys.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00Congratulations.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Really pleased to be on Vana's team.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07She's very switched on, very well-educated person.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11- She'll know what she'll want to do.- We are just vessels of Vana.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16First for both finalists, put the plans to their troops.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Essentially it's an online dating app.

0:07:19 > 0:07:20It's about playing games in order

0:07:20 > 0:07:23to figure out who you should be matched with.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26The types of games will be like brainteasers, psychometric tests,

0:07:26 > 0:07:29we want to figure out if you're empathetic, if you're a risk taker,

0:07:29 > 0:07:32all those things, but we want to figure them out without asking you.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38There is a scientific algorithm matching you with a person,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41based on who you are. It's not just some random algorithm.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44The way we do it is with this Oxford PhD. He's going to be

0:07:44 > 0:07:46the brains behind it, so it's something that makes sense

0:07:46 > 0:07:49because he actually has a PhD in desire.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Gaming meets dating.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55This is a novel, but complicated concept,

0:07:55 > 0:07:58but Richard is a self-proclaimed marketing expert

0:07:58 > 0:08:01so maybe he can communicate it in her branding.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03I'll just table one idea that I've sketched out

0:08:03 > 0:08:05here in terms of the billboard.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08You could have just two people on their phones.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Coming up on the phones could be things like

0:08:11 > 0:08:13"extrovert", "determined", "risk taker".

0:08:13 > 0:08:15I know I've chosen a really good team.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19I need someone on board who can help pitch, brand and market,

0:08:19 > 0:08:21and that's Richard's expertise.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25I might not like him as a person, but I like him in business.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28I could take your concept and make sure that billboard holds up

0:08:28 > 0:08:30to what your concept is.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32I like that idea.

0:08:32 > 0:08:33Across the hall...

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Guys, great to see you again.

0:08:35 > 0:08:36..a warm reunion.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40My existing business is a plumbing, heating and maintenance business.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43What our aim is to do is to expand the business,

0:08:43 > 0:08:46moving into renewable technologies like the solar panels.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49So you start with an initial investment,

0:08:49 > 0:08:53have the system installed and then you get free hot water.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55I want to make sure I'm on the same level as you.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56I pretty much understand everything

0:08:56 > 0:08:59you mentioned apart from the renewable technologies.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Joseph picked returning candidates based on how much he liked them,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04not based on how much they could help him.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07See the tag line I've come up with is "creating a sweeter future",

0:09:07 > 0:09:09obviously cos you've got the play with the Lord Sugar element.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11'And there's no inspiration'

0:09:11 > 0:09:14and I think he'll be kicking himself that he didn't pick people with

0:09:14 > 0:09:17a much more creative and marketing background than the people here.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19You need to start thinking about image

0:09:19 > 0:09:23and that's what we need you to be able to say, what your vision is.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Yeah.

0:09:25 > 0:09:2610:30.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Half of each team heads off to research their market

0:09:31 > 0:09:33and create a digital billboard.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36I really like the idea that the game that you play starts to

0:09:36 > 0:09:39influence the person that you're going to be introduced to.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40You always think,

0:09:40 > 0:09:43"Why would I be attractive to the opposite sex and then..."

0:09:43 > 0:09:47- Aw. You're OK, Richard.- Didn't ever have any problems in my day.

0:09:49 > 0:09:50Back at base...

0:09:50 > 0:09:53- The words "play" and "date" have to be in the name.- OK.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56So that's why I'm thinking Date Play.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59..name sorted for Vana.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Actually, can you just make the word "play" in the fuchsia?

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Next, putting love into the logo.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09- You don't want to be too feminine, as well.- The pink is not pink.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12- It's like pinkish-reddish.- Do you want any aspect of it to look fun?

0:10:12 > 0:10:14I don't really want too much fun.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16On the other team...

0:10:16 > 0:10:17How about the name My Plumber?

0:10:17 > 0:10:19The protege.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23..aiming for a bold new brand-name...

0:10:23 > 0:10:25What about something like The Plumbing Co?

0:10:25 > 0:10:29- ..Joseph, Gary and Mergim.- Do you want to write this up on there?

0:10:29 > 0:10:33Enerplutuer. E-N-E-R-P-L-U-T-U-E-R.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Basically, the way I've come up with it is put

0:10:35 > 0:10:40"future", "plumbing" and "energy", and just mixed the words up.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44So, I just thought of one, guys. PrimeTime Plumbers. PTP.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- Rolls off the tongue. - PrimeTime Plumbers. Hm?

0:10:48 > 0:10:50Right.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53For Vana's digital billboard creatives...

0:10:53 > 0:10:55I'm thinking having a girl,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58sat there lonely at home sort of thing, glass of wine, do you know?

0:10:58 > 0:11:02Then you've got the lonely old man, you know, as Richard would be,

0:11:02 > 0:11:04and then you down on one knee

0:11:04 > 0:11:08and then it shows how they've taken this lonely moment together?

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Working with Charleine, it's depressing at times,

0:11:11 > 0:11:16and it's funny at times, but what we're doing is presenting

0:11:16 > 0:11:20the dream of what this could be and I think we'll be able to do that.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23So I'm still thinking boy and girl back-to-back,

0:11:23 > 0:11:26playing on a phone, and those words come out through the phone -

0:11:26 > 0:11:30"determined", "go-getter", whatever, and the girl's got the same thing,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33she's like, "Yeah, I'm a determined go-getter," etc,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- and then they come together into a heart.- OK, that works.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Back working with Richard, you know what Richard's like.

0:11:42 > 0:11:43It's kind of Richard's way.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46But it's something that I never really got on board with.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49We need to get it from one place, same height, same everything.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53- Do you do photography? - Honestly, I do this all the time.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57You could do maybe like a... like a...like a...

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- You tell me, then.- I'm only joking.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Why don't you do it first and then I'll follow you, then?

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Then we'll get the same looks, then?

0:12:04 > 0:12:05'It's definitely going to take

0:12:05 > 0:12:08'all my acting ability to make out that we're in love.'

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Yeah, tell you what, walk over there.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12Then just relax and then just start...

0:12:12 > 0:12:14A few weeks ago, I could have throttled him,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17and there he is, down on one knee to me.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Mid-afternoon.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27Putting Joseph's renewable plan to market leaders British Gas...

0:12:27 > 0:12:29We've got a few questions that

0:12:29 > 0:12:31we want to run through with you if that's OK.

0:12:31 > 0:12:32..Brett and Elle.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Joseph is really interested in growing renewable technology

0:12:35 > 0:12:38so really one of the main questions we have for you is where you

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- see that going. - It's not that big in the UK yet.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44It's a significant capital investment to put solar

0:12:44 > 0:12:46panels on your roof.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48He's just trying to latch on to the fact we are all getting green.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52This is not a market that will be mass-market in the next five years.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58- Hi, it's Elle speaking. - Hi, Elle, how are you doing?

0:12:58 > 0:13:01A couple of key things. With the renewable technology,

0:13:01 > 0:13:05it's not something that's taking off in the next five years or so.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07She said a lot of her customers,

0:13:07 > 0:13:10they're a bit kind of nervous about going into it yet.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14It's that initial cost and generally it is quite a large amount.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16'It's not... You know...'

0:13:16 > 0:13:20All right, then, bye. Speak to you soon. Bye. Bye.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22I have my vision and I know what I wanted

0:13:22 > 0:13:26and it's hard to now think of something else that'll work.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Renewable technology is 15 years away, but he seems to be

0:13:29 > 0:13:33putting this at the forefront of his campaign and that's a real risk

0:13:33 > 0:13:37because most people don't even know what it is, let alone how to get it.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I do think that there is a big market for renewable

0:13:40 > 0:13:42energy that is something that is coming in.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44I can't see anything else working.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- For Date Play...- Welcome.- Thank you.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51..a chance to pick up pointers...

0:13:51 > 0:13:53We're looking to launch a dating app paired through gaming.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56..from online giant eHarmony.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58The lady that's actually putting this together,

0:13:58 > 0:14:00she's a very intelligent person.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01The games aren't just going to be

0:14:01 > 0:14:03like your tacky sort of cheesy games.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07It'll be like a lot of in-depth and brain and science

0:14:07 > 0:14:08and everything behind it.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11You're probably going to have to demonstrate your unique

0:14:11 > 0:14:14selling points to drive awareness of the brand

0:14:14 > 0:14:16because it is such a crowded market.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19You know, what kind of marketing do you want to put behind it?

0:14:19 > 0:14:22We're creating a digital billboard and we are also creating a TV

0:14:22 > 0:14:27advert, so what key messages do you think we need to get across?

0:14:27 > 0:14:30Strong imagery is important, and make sure that your brand

0:14:30 > 0:14:34feels really fresh and modern and not cheesy.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36I think cheesy has been done in this industry.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39We ourselves and others have learned the lessons from that.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43- Look forward to putting this into action.- Good luck.- Thank you.- Great.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Hello?- Hello, how are you doing?

0:14:46 > 0:14:49- The super sub team.- We thought we'd give you some feedback.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52'What I took out of it as being the most important bits for you

0:14:52 > 0:14:54'is the brand is really important.'

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Like, get rid of the cheesy boy and girl staring into each other's eyes.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01- OK.- No cheese. - I don't agree with that, but OK.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05'I like the continuity between the ad and the billboard.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07'You and Charleine will be in both.'

0:15:07 > 0:15:10I think that's important and I think we're telling a clear story.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12- Thank you.- All right, cheers, bye.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Telling us not to do male and females.

0:15:16 > 0:15:21It's like, OK, we've got this new age, like... It's dating!

0:15:25 > 0:15:28We're going to have the company name across the top with

0:15:28 > 0:15:30a naked flame with our still going in behind.

0:15:30 > 0:15:35Applying Joseph's renewable approach to PrimeTime's digital billboard...

0:15:35 > 0:15:37The solar energy represents renewable sources.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39..Brett and Elle...

0:15:39 > 0:15:42- Then some biomass energies. Is that all right?- Yeah.- Fantastic.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45I think for Joseph at the moment, it he's not necessarily 100%

0:15:45 > 0:15:47clear how he wants to portray his business idea.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50Let's take a couple of pictures of the flame to pick the best one,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53cos sometimes flames obviously move naturally.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55I've tried to incorporate some sort of fun with it,

0:15:55 > 0:15:57make it a little bit more snazzy.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00We've tried to make the best out of a potentially bad situation.

0:16:00 > 0:16:01I think you might have to go further away.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04But then I've got your hand on it.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06- For God's sake. - Don't put your fingers over the end.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08I tried to flick it again so it was ready.

0:16:10 > 0:16:11In east London...

0:16:11 > 0:16:13I do actually think it's a good logo. What do you think?

0:16:13 > 0:16:15- Yeah.- It's eye-catching, I think.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18..PrimeTime Plumbers finally has a logo.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20The whole point of this is to be innovative

0:16:20 > 0:16:23and stand out from the competition.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28- I think it gives an elegant side to it, as well.- Yeah, I'm happy.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31- KARREN:- Joseph needs to understand how he takes his small business

0:16:31 > 0:16:33and grows it into a nationwide business.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36But instead he's focusing on the logo.

0:16:36 > 0:16:37It's not very modern.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41He just ought to really think about what is his USP,

0:16:41 > 0:16:45what makes him unique and why is he the service you should go to?

0:16:45 > 0:16:47With logos signed off...

0:16:47 > 0:16:49- I think it looks good.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51..time for finishing touches...

0:16:51 > 0:16:54We've got two miserable-looking people with our company name on it.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56That picture needs some words.

0:16:56 > 0:16:57..for Date Play.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01That needs to flash in a box with a black and pink border.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Stop flashing in boxes with black and pink borders.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08- Can you make it sparkle? - Ruth, stop sparkles.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10On the other team...

0:17:10 > 0:17:12This is going to represent his company...

0:17:12 > 0:17:15..the big reveal of PrimeTime Plumbers.

0:17:15 > 0:17:16- ELLE:- It's not what I was expecting.

0:17:16 > 0:17:21I think he's missed a trick with the colour element.

0:17:21 > 0:17:22It's not what I thought of.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24HE SCOFFS

0:17:26 > 0:17:27HE SNORTS

0:17:27 > 0:17:30If that's took three men three hours,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33that's effectively nine man-hours to produce something like that.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36It's not the way I'd portray my brand-new business to have looked.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40If he's happy with it and he likes it, what more can we do?

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- RICHARD:- Yes. Bravo, guys.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47- RUTH:- Hopefully, we've kept it classy.

0:17:47 > 0:17:52We don't want cheesy. So, you know, I think we've ticked all the boxes.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55- Happy?- Yeah.- Happy?- Happy!

0:17:55 > 0:17:58- Yeah.- Well done. - Well done, well done, Ruthy baby.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00I just don't think it stands out enough.

0:18:00 > 0:18:01The billboard won't be

0:18:01 > 0:18:03the be all and end all of whether or not he wins.

0:18:03 > 0:18:04We can only deal with what we had

0:18:04 > 0:18:07and we tried to make the best out of a bad situation.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10I just think it all looks a bit shit...

0:18:10 > 0:18:12in the nicest way possible.

0:18:12 > 0:18:13Oh, God.

0:18:19 > 0:18:218am.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24We have our storyboard here for the video promo to see

0:18:24 > 0:18:26if you guys have any feedback.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Today, the teams must film promos for their fledgling businesses.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33OK, so, here we have Charleine playing on her phone.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Taking charge of her video, Vana.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Then we have Richard playing on his phone in a different shot,

0:18:38 > 0:18:40then we have jugglers and a light show.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43So it'll be like a metaphor for what's going on behind the scenes.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46I want to be there during the filming

0:18:46 > 0:18:49because I think the real challenge will be getting across the main

0:18:49 > 0:18:53ideas, so I want to make sure that I'm there as well in order to

0:18:53 > 0:18:56have all the tools I need to give a good presentation tomorrow.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Date Play, the only dating app using scientifically

0:18:59 > 0:19:02- formulated games to help match you. - Nice, like it.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04Elle, I hope you don't mind and, Brett, I hope you don't mind,

0:19:04 > 0:19:07but I want to use you as actors in the video.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Oh, Christ, here we go.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13On the other team, Joseph gets to grips with his promo.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16So, Brett, we've got you the boiler suit and the tool bag.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18- So then you come in.- Ta-da.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Wow, that was fast. PrimeTime Plumbers.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24So, Mergim's going to be the overseer.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26Everything that is coming out, basically.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28The fact that Joseph's giving Mergim

0:19:28 > 0:19:32the role of overseeing the promo today is a little bit concerning.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34Just make sure the message comes across,

0:19:34 > 0:19:36that's the key to the advert.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Stand there as a viewer and make sure that everything is clear.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41I know from experience what can happen when you give

0:19:41 > 0:19:45Mergim any responsibility, so we'll have to see how that pans out.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Ruth and Natalie are going to be going to the app developers.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51Tasked with finalising Vana's figures...

0:19:51 > 0:19:55What's important is proving that this money will go further

0:19:55 > 0:19:56than Lord Sugar thinks it will go.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58..Natalie and Ruth.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01- So I want Lord Sugar to see...- Yes. - ..this is totally possible with the money.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04And you need to know what you'll be spending out afterwards.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06Yeah. And what I also know.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10What's really important today is that WE show and prove to Lord Sugar

0:20:10 > 0:20:12that his investment is not going to be wasted.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15That's what's really important to get from this group this morning.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17And by gorra - they're going to give us it.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21- RICHARD:- After you, ladies...

0:20:21 > 0:20:239:30am.

0:20:24 > 0:20:25I'm kind of freaking out.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27You guys need to ask the right questions.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30I want you to run this, cos Ruth can be a little wordy.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33You need to ask about...if it's feasible, how long it will take.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36But the most important questions are going to be around costings.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39So around the cost of developing the app.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44Now I've just got images of me just kind of going, "Oh, no...

0:20:44 > 0:20:48"my pipes have burst," then Brett running in going, "Oh, hang on, let me grab a tool..."

0:20:48 > 0:20:49I've been stitched up here!

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Central London.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Wouldn't I shout, "Mergim, the fire's not working..."?

0:20:55 > 0:20:58- You'd be like - "Oh. PrimeTime Plumbers."- Yeah.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59Running up for record...

0:20:59 > 0:21:02Location for PrimeTime Plumbers: The Movie.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05I'm off to run a bath.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Mergim, the fire's not working.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09- STIFFLY:- Neither is the bath!

0:21:09 > 0:21:10HE LAUGHS

0:21:13 > 0:21:15- Cut(!)- Mergim, no!

0:21:16 > 0:21:17- BRETT MIMICS HIM - "Neither is the bath!"

0:21:17 > 0:21:19What are you doing?!

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Action...

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Well - what are we going to do about it? I'm freezing.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25I'll get hold of PrimeTime Plumbers,

0:21:25 > 0:21:26- on the... - HE CRACKS UP

0:21:26 > 0:21:27That was perfect!

0:21:27 > 0:21:31- Guys, honestly...- Brett, what can we do? Cos I'm trying.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34How can you not laugh at that face? Look at it.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37- It's starting to look like a 1970s porno.- Action...

0:21:37 > 0:21:40Well - what are we going to do about it?

0:21:40 > 0:21:42What are you laughing for?!

0:21:42 > 0:21:44Ohhh...!

0:21:46 > 0:21:51Representing the inner workings of Vana's dating app...

0:21:51 > 0:21:54- You guys are amazing. - ..a group of jugglers.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56It's representative of them passing data,

0:21:56 > 0:21:57with them juggling

0:21:57 > 0:22:01- and passing the lights to each other. I think it's a good metaphor. - Definitely, definitely.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05It is a hard sell. This whole thing is asking people mentally

0:22:05 > 0:22:07to make a leap from real people on phones

0:22:07 > 0:22:09to some sort of weird,

0:22:09 > 0:22:12surreal app world,

0:22:12 > 0:22:14so we have juggling, dancing...

0:22:14 > 0:22:18And MAYBE that's enough, but it's a big ask.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20- HE CROONS:- # This is the night... #

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Rekindling the romance...

0:22:22 > 0:22:25- # ..and they call it... # - ..Richard and Charleine.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Guys, no. Seriously.

0:22:27 > 0:22:28You look like a freak.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30OK, no rose.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32I can't believe I've found my ideal match...

0:22:32 > 0:22:34Right, too forced. Try again.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37Vana, Richard and Charleine have had a whale of a time today

0:22:37 > 0:22:38creating the video...

0:22:38 > 0:22:41- RICHARD:- It's really good to get to know you like this.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43Richard... Your wedding ring.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46'The fact is, though, that Vana's head should really be thinking

0:22:46 > 0:22:49'about what could persuade Lord Sugar she can create'

0:22:49 > 0:22:52a website, an app, and everything that goes with it,

0:22:52 > 0:22:56and, most importantly, create a profit out of this business.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59- You made it happen. - The sparks were flying! - The sparks were flying.- Yeah.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01Holborn.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- NATALIE:- Hello...- MAN:- Hi there. - RUTH:- Hello, there, hi.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08Sent to meet app developers for Vana's vital figures...

0:23:08 > 0:23:13People will play games, and they'll be matched scientifically by what they do on the games.

0:23:13 > 0:23:14..Ruth and Natalie.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17How much would it generally cost for that app to be developed?

0:23:17 > 0:23:19The starting price would be, say, £30,000 to £40,000.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22The important thing to think about an app is it's never finished -

0:23:22 > 0:23:23some of the leading apps,

0:23:23 > 0:23:26you know, you're talking hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30- That'll probably soak up your initial investment.- The sky is the limit.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32In terms of return on investment for your client,

0:23:32 > 0:23:37what sort of figures are being bandied about in THEIR minds?

0:23:37 > 0:23:40It will be a long time before you get to a sort of a critical mass

0:23:40 > 0:23:42where you can actually start to monetise it.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44You're walking into such a crowded marketplace,

0:23:44 > 0:23:46and none of this happens overnight

0:23:46 > 0:23:48and I think your investor needs to understand that

0:23:48 > 0:23:50it's about playing the long game,

0:23:50 > 0:23:53and creating a brand more than anything else.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55- NATALIE:- 'Hello.'

0:23:55 > 0:23:57Hi, yes. How are you guys?

0:23:57 > 0:24:02Some of them did say that it is possible to create an app for 30 to 40 grand.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06'One person did say that he thought you would get through the whole investment in a few months.'

0:24:06 > 0:24:08'So he was including marketing in that budget, correct?'

0:24:08 > 0:24:12No, he was... We asked them specifically how much would it cost

0:24:12 > 0:24:14'to just develop the app. Wasn't about marketing.'

0:24:14 > 0:24:17- Yeah. Can I just clarify...- No.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19'The guy said that was to launch an app.'

0:24:21 > 0:24:24- Vana...- Let me just check.- ..my opinion was that it was just for

0:24:24 > 0:24:27'app development. I'm pretty certain that was the case.'

0:24:27 > 0:24:29- All right. OK.- Bye, Vana, good luck.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33They are confused between them of what the developers actually said,

0:24:33 > 0:24:37- which I'm not surprised about - I mean, it's Ruth and Natalie... - CHARLEINE:- Yeah. Scatterbrained.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39The fact that Ruth and Natalie

0:24:39 > 0:24:41weren't able to even

0:24:41 > 0:24:45be on the same page about feedback is pretty shocking.

0:24:45 > 0:24:46This is cut-throat, this is competitive,

0:24:46 > 0:24:48and there isn't room for these types of errors.

0:24:50 > 0:24:51Late morning.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55Lord Sugar's made it very, very clear that he needs me to show him

0:24:55 > 0:24:58this is big enough for him to invest in.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00To help PrimeTime hit the big time,

0:25:00 > 0:25:03for Joseph, a meeting with company bigwigs.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06So, thank you very much for your time this morning.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10His aim - find out what it takes to serve commercial clients.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12I currently run my own business,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15I've been in the plumbing and heating industry for around ten years,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18and we do all different types of domestic work.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20The reason I am here today is to find out

0:25:20 > 0:25:23how I'm going to enter into a slightly bigger,

0:25:23 > 0:25:24more corporate market.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28- Does anybody use renewable technologies in their business at the moment?- Yes.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30It's a very crowded market,

0:25:30 > 0:25:33which has suffered from the unpredictability of government policy around renewables.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35I'm more interested in smart technology.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39If I've got a water pump that has four pumps and one's breaking down,

0:25:39 > 0:25:40I want to know - I'm not on site.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43I've never heard of anything like that, to be honest,

0:25:43 > 0:25:45so that is a nice thing to look into.

0:25:45 > 0:25:46What is the one unique thing

0:25:46 > 0:25:49that you're going to provide that'll make us notice you?

0:25:49 > 0:25:53Service is the main thing. The companies that I've dealt with in the past,

0:25:53 > 0:25:54I made sure I was there straightaway,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57the job was outstanding, the price very competitive...

0:25:57 > 0:26:00What you do have is a very personable personality

0:26:00 > 0:26:03and I think that that's probably going to carry you quite far.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07I think that that's what you need to hone, if anything, a little more.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Joseph made the wrong decision yesterday -

0:26:09 > 0:26:11he spent all day faffing around with the logo.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15'But thankfully today he's come here, he's gleaned so much information...'

0:26:15 > 0:26:20Growth is the key to getting the investment, and he focused today on that.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23For Joseph, a last-minute change of direction.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25- 'Hi, Elle, how you doing?' - Yeah, good. You?

0:26:25 > 0:26:27'Is there any way that you could incorporate'

0:26:27 > 0:26:30a smart technology scene into that filming?

0:26:30 > 0:26:33- BRETT:- 'Not really. Erm...' - 'Hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on, we can...'

0:26:33 > 0:26:36Maybe Mergim could literally look at his phone, go,

0:26:36 > 0:26:38- "I'll book it on the app." - BRETT:- Yeah, I know what you mean.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42- No, that's fine.- No worries, we can do that, that's no problem. - 'Cheers, then.'

0:26:42 > 0:26:43Next, a plan to turn praise

0:26:43 > 0:26:46into tools for tomorrow's pitch.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48I'm going to ask everybody

0:26:48 > 0:26:50to do a quick soundbite, something like,

0:26:50 > 0:26:52"Listening to PrimeTime Plumbers

0:26:52 > 0:26:56"I would potentially like to work with them in the future." Is that something you could say?

0:26:56 > 0:26:58The opportunity that PrimeTime Plumbers has

0:26:58 > 0:27:01is to create a really reliable brand.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03It's nice that you said PrimeTime Plumbers, as well.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06- I hope I'm about to get some shares or something. - THEY LAUGH

0:27:06 > 0:27:09I think Joe's got a terrific idea here.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12And I think Joseph has got a great future in this industry.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15Obviously we're hoping to come to London at some point, could I take your card?

0:27:15 > 0:27:20- Thank you. Cheers. Take care. - Let's have a chat when you're done. - Definitely, thank you very much.

0:27:22 > 0:27:256:30pm.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28Still with unanswered questions about her finances,

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Vana calls for advice from the top...

0:27:31 > 0:27:35- 'Hello.' - Hi. Erm, is this Mr Bertrand?

0:27:35 > 0:27:38..the managing director of eHarmony.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Is this possible with £250,000?

0:27:40 > 0:27:42'I think it's possible,

0:27:42 > 0:27:48'I think you're going to have to be probably focused on a small number of features

0:27:48 > 0:27:51'because you have limited budget.'

0:27:51 > 0:27:53You do think that IS something that could work?

0:27:53 > 0:27:55'It's a very, very competitive market.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57'There are ten to 15 new dating apps

0:27:57 > 0:28:00'running out of business every week in the UK,

0:28:00 > 0:28:03'and it's very hard to get people to want to pay

0:28:03 > 0:28:06'for a dating app, because they've got so much choice for free.'

0:28:06 > 0:28:10So, I understand that that will be a difficult aspect of this.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14- 'Good luck.'- Thank you very much, take care.- 'Take care.'- Bye!

0:28:15 > 0:28:16(Right.)

0:28:16 > 0:28:18The warning signs are there for Vana.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Because £250,000 investment

0:28:21 > 0:28:26is unlikely to be able to produce an app that then generates revenue.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28I think she's going to need more than the amount

0:28:28 > 0:28:30that Lord Sugar has on offer,

0:28:30 > 0:28:32and that may very well cause him a problem.

0:28:34 > 0:28:369:00pm.

0:28:36 > 0:28:40So, I think tomorrow, Gary, will be one of the biggest days of my life.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42Feeling nervous obviously,

0:28:42 > 0:28:45I've never spoke in front of 200 people before.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49Is there any story why you went into that industry, from day one?

0:28:49 > 0:28:52- Because I was expelled from school(?) - GARY LAUGHS

0:28:52 > 0:28:54I had nothing else, and I picked it at the time

0:28:54 > 0:28:56cos it was there and people said that there was money in it.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58D'you think, get all that in there?

0:28:58 > 0:28:59Yeah, I mean, in your own way,

0:28:59 > 0:29:01having that real passion, I think that'll help.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04In life, you don't get these opportunities very often.

0:29:04 > 0:29:09I'm feeling excited, I'm feeling nervous. It's a mixed bag of emotions.

0:29:09 > 0:29:10It all comes down to me.

0:29:18 > 0:29:207am.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Got a lot of material ready for the pitch.

0:29:22 > 0:29:23This is what it's all boiled down to,

0:29:23 > 0:29:25all of the hard work, once again.

0:29:25 > 0:29:29Today, the finalists present their companies to Lord Sugar.

0:29:29 > 0:29:32You three girls are going to go to consumer testing.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35It's important for me that you get statistics, so I want numbers.

0:29:35 > 0:29:39But first, a chance to test their new brands on the public.

0:29:39 > 0:29:44Got some boiler suits and some sandwich boards for you guys to wear...

0:29:44 > 0:29:45- Think that looks good?- ALL: Yeah.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52Teams dispatched, Vana tackles the flaws in her funding.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56We will have to do a second round of fundraising, for sure.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58I think you've got two options.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02I think you've got, ballsy, and just saying, "I know this is a problem,

0:30:02 > 0:30:04- "I'm going to tackle it head-on..." - Yeah, I'd rather do that.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07The other option is...

0:30:07 > 0:30:10I don't think you have another option. Cos it WILL come up.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13I'm going to tackle the issue of funding and financing head-on.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16I'm going to talk about raising that next round of financing

0:30:16 > 0:30:18through a venture capital fund.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21This is not going to be an investment where you're

0:30:21 > 0:30:24putting £250,000 in and expecting returns immediately.

0:30:24 > 0:30:28Maybe I shouldn't say... "There's a very...slim chance"?

0:30:28 > 0:30:30It's something that I think will

0:30:30 > 0:30:31kind of protect me

0:30:31 > 0:30:35in the sense that I will have put all my cards out on the table,

0:30:35 > 0:30:40so I won't get these difficult questions about fundraising.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43"This IS a higher-risk investment than a gas or plumbing company,

0:30:43 > 0:30:47"but this WILL give you larger returns."

0:30:47 > 0:30:51Yes, there's hundreds of tombstones for apps.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53But there's also some BIG apps

0:30:53 > 0:30:55that have made millions of pounds,

0:30:55 > 0:30:57and you could be the next one

0:30:57 > 0:31:01- because you've got a great platform to be able to start from.- Yeah.

0:31:04 > 0:31:05Liverpool Street Station.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08- That looks good. - Yeah, it don't look out of place.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10Joseph's team seek feedback for the pitch.

0:31:10 > 0:31:13Would you say that you could get a clear message

0:31:13 > 0:31:15about what PrimeTime Plumbers is about?

0:31:15 > 0:31:18I wouldn't have noticed the advert unless you'd pointed it out.

0:31:18 > 0:31:20- I thought it was pretty dull. - Right, OK...

0:31:20 > 0:31:25- Why did you choose a grey background?- Kind of maybe the slight issue.- I think colour.- Yeah.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27Perhaps you need to think about your name.

0:31:27 > 0:31:28I don't think it gets the message at all.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31We know we'll get some negative feedback.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34Do you reckon it's a good idea to tell Joseph any of this?

0:31:34 > 0:31:37- Well, to be honest...- Nah... - We should not overload him.

0:31:37 > 0:31:41- They just said it could have been more colourful.- Yeah. - I would literally just say that.

0:31:41 > 0:31:439am.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46For the finalists, pitch pending.

0:31:46 > 0:31:51I'm going to try and... keep my focus with Lord Sugar.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54I want him to see my confidence, I want him to see my passion,

0:31:54 > 0:31:57I want him to see that I know what I'm talking about, I want...

0:31:57 > 0:32:00I want him to look inside me and see that I'm the right man.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06I wish right now you were throwing me into that 20-minute pitch.

0:32:06 > 0:32:07I could just do it.

0:32:07 > 0:32:09Just don't cheapen what you're doing.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11Keep it classy, keep it classy.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13Come on...

0:32:14 > 0:32:17At Victoria Station...

0:32:17 > 0:32:19Oh, my God...!

0:32:19 > 0:32:21- Charleine, you look great. - You look beautiful.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24..Vana's team pull commuters.

0:32:24 > 0:32:28- Have you ever downloaded any dating apps?- No. I have a boyfriend.

0:32:28 > 0:32:29You have a boyfriend, that's why.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31Would you ever download this ap?

0:32:31 > 0:32:33Probably not right now, I have a girlfriend.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36I wouldn't go for it, but I actually think, like...

0:32:36 > 0:32:39I think people like my dad would go for it.

0:32:39 > 0:32:40Your dad would go for it?

0:32:43 > 0:32:45City Hall.

0:32:47 > 0:32:49Landmark for London.

0:32:50 > 0:32:55Today, pitch location for Lord Sugar's finalists.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02- Look at this. This is my stage, Gary.- The scene is set.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04Look at that...

0:33:04 > 0:33:05- IN AWE:- Wow!

0:33:10 > 0:33:13First - filter through the feedback.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18Overall, quite positive, to be honest - there wasn't any massive negative points,

0:33:18 > 0:33:22it was just...the display could have been a bit more colourful.

0:33:22 > 0:33:23Take that on the chin.

0:33:23 > 0:33:24Yeah.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28- VANA:- Was the feedback good or not? - Mixed.- Mixed. OK.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30Half of the people we did ask was in a relationship.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33I don't want to hear about

0:33:33 > 0:33:35the people in a relationship, obviously.

0:33:35 > 0:33:40- So can you just tell me the numbers for the single people? - Yeah. Right, OK.

0:33:40 > 0:33:42Three people were single.

0:33:43 > 0:33:44Yeah.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46Out of three single people...

0:33:46 > 0:33:48All of them would download.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50That's 100%...

0:33:50 > 0:33:53Er... Would they use the app? Four said yes, three said they wouldn't...

0:33:53 > 0:33:57But are those three people the people in relationships? Cos of course they wouldn't use it.

0:33:57 > 0:34:02It's like asking a bald man if he would use Charleine's hair salon.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05- Of course he wouldn't, so that's not part of the sample.- Yes.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08The three who were single, 100% of them said they would download it.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11100% of them said they liked the concept,

0:34:11 > 0:34:12and they would pay.

0:34:12 > 0:34:16- So from the little feedback we've got, it's been quite positive.- Yeah.

0:34:20 > 0:34:231pm.

0:34:23 > 0:34:27Doors open to top names from British industry.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32Including experts from the worlds of plumbing...

0:34:32 > 0:34:34and dating.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47"My name is Joseph Valente.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49"I'd like to go back to the beginning,

0:34:49 > 0:34:52"and that requires talking about me."

0:35:00 > 0:35:02- (Baroness Brady.)- (Lord Sugar.)

0:35:04 > 0:35:07Hoping to woo the industry experts...

0:35:09 > 0:35:11..Vana Koutsomitis.

0:35:11 > 0:35:12APPLAUSE

0:35:14 > 0:35:16'I'm basically putting myself on the line.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18'I'm showing my creation,

0:35:18 > 0:35:22'that might not be accepted or

0:35:22 > 0:35:23'welcomed by the industry experts.

0:35:26 > 0:35:30'It's nerve-racking presenting my idea in front of a large audience.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32'You know that there's no hiding.'

0:35:34 > 0:35:36Hello, and welcome.

0:35:36 > 0:35:39I have been working in the dating industry

0:35:39 > 0:35:41for the past couple of years.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43So I really understand the market.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46And I think there's room for something new.

0:35:47 > 0:35:49I'm introducing Date Play.

0:35:49 > 0:35:54This is a concept that marries two very different fields,

0:35:54 > 0:35:56but two very GROWING fields -

0:35:56 > 0:35:58gaming, and dating.

0:35:58 > 0:36:00I'm going to show you a quick video,

0:36:00 > 0:36:03so you can understand what we're all about.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06UPBEAT MUSIC

0:36:06 > 0:36:07'Introducing date play.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10'The fast, fun dating app.

0:36:10 > 0:36:12'Date Play works behind the scenes,

0:36:12 > 0:36:16'to match you using scientifically designed games.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20'Play - to unlock your free daily match.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24'It's a match!

0:36:25 > 0:36:27'Date Play.'

0:36:29 > 0:36:32MUSIC: I Will Never Let You Down by Rita Ora

0:36:35 > 0:36:39People might say, "Oh, there's too many dating apps out there."

0:36:39 > 0:36:40But they're wrong.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43This is a growing industry.

0:36:43 > 0:36:44One in four people

0:36:44 > 0:36:47that get married today have met online.

0:36:47 > 0:36:49That's telling us something, right?

0:36:49 > 0:36:52So, let's go into the details.

0:36:52 > 0:36:55Why is Date Play unique?

0:36:55 > 0:36:58It will be scientific games, it'll be brainteasers.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00It'll be psychometric-type tests.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02But they will all be done in an interactive manner

0:37:02 > 0:37:05that is engaging for the end user.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08So the games will not be just random.

0:37:08 > 0:37:10I will be working with an Oxford PhD -

0:37:10 > 0:37:12we call him the Doctor of Desire.

0:37:12 > 0:37:13CHUCKLING

0:37:15 > 0:37:20In terms of the growth strategy, we think we can have 2.4%

0:37:20 > 0:37:23of our free users convert to paying users.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25What needs to happen now

0:37:25 > 0:37:27is we need to prove this model.

0:37:27 > 0:37:31We need to get those users on board, and then, if need be,

0:37:31 > 0:37:35we can go and do another round of fundraising with a venture capital firm.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40I want to quote Romain Bertrand,

0:37:40 > 0:37:44who kindly helped with a bit of my market research.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46He told me yesterday,

0:37:46 > 0:37:48"I think it's definitely possible

0:37:48 > 0:37:50"to launch a first version of the app,

0:37:50 > 0:37:52"and operate it without having marketing,

0:37:52 > 0:37:56"for under £250,000."

0:37:56 > 0:37:58Thank you very much for your time today,

0:37:58 > 0:38:02and I'd like to open it up to any questions you may have.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04The main problem in the industry is

0:38:04 > 0:38:08how to actually monetise this business. Why do you think

0:38:08 > 0:38:09you'd be any different?

0:38:09 > 0:38:11We think there's room for something new.

0:38:11 > 0:38:15So this is a NEW opportunity,

0:38:15 > 0:38:17that marries dating and gaming.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19I think there's room for it - and I'd like to prove it.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22Lots of people, they go on to the online dating up

0:38:22 > 0:38:25because they literally want to get through at least 100 people a day,

0:38:25 > 0:38:29and they are extremely aesthetically-driven.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31That feels like a stronger proposition

0:38:31 > 0:38:34than somebody who's well psychologically-matched.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37I agree. But...there comes a point

0:38:37 > 0:38:39where you need a smarter tool to help match people.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42What if it can be fun -

0:38:42 > 0:38:44but there was actually a thought process

0:38:44 > 0:38:46that went on behind the scenes of the app,

0:38:46 > 0:38:51that could ensure that you weren't going to meet ANOTHER boring date?

0:38:51 > 0:38:54Thank you so much for your time, I really enjoyed being here today.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06Oh, my God, it was like, so energising.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10- I was dodging questions... - You did so well.- You did, honestly.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12- It was great.- Oh... - BRETT:- Well done.- I'm so relieved.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14There are risks to it,

0:39:14 > 0:39:17but the capital value of the dating business is huge.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20For Lord Sugar - feedback from the experts.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23When they stick, they stick well - and it's viral

0:39:23 > 0:39:25and there's a lot there that could make it work.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27I'd invest in her as a person.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30In terms of the idea, I think she's going to need a bit more help.

0:39:30 > 0:39:34- Further investment...- Yeah. - ..would make that business grow. That's how the model works.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37That's what I'm coming round to thinking - £250,000

0:39:37 > 0:39:42to get the thing off the ground and to demonstrate that it is scalable...

0:39:44 > 0:39:47Don't be nervous. Do yourself proud.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49About to take the plunge...

0:39:49 > 0:39:53- You know your business, you know your market.- ..Joseph Valente.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57'This is the biggest pitch of my life,

0:39:57 > 0:40:00'everything we've done in this process comes down to this.

0:40:02 > 0:40:05That was my chance to show Lord Sugar who I am, what I'm about.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08Not only Lord Sugar but the industry.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18Please let me introduce you to...

0:40:18 > 0:40:19PrimeTime Plumbers.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24I would like to go back to where it all began

0:40:24 > 0:40:25and that starts with myself,

0:40:25 > 0:40:28which just happens to be my favourite subject.

0:40:28 > 0:40:32I started plumbing and heating when I was 15 years old.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36I then progressed. I started my first business in 2012,

0:40:36 > 0:40:41in Peterborough, and I was able to very, very quickly take on

0:40:41 > 0:40:46multiple engineers, have an office, employ a small infrastructure,

0:40:46 > 0:40:50and now what I need to do is to push this brand out of Peterborough

0:40:50 > 0:40:52and grow through larger cities.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54My team has put together a promotional video

0:40:54 > 0:40:57and I'd like to show you that now.

0:40:58 > 0:41:01I'm off to run a bath.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05Mergim, the fire's not working.

0:41:05 > 0:41:09- The bath is not working neither. - What are we going to do about it?

0:41:09 > 0:41:12- I'm freezing.- I'll book PrimeTime Plumbers on their app.

0:41:12 > 0:41:14DOORBELL RINGS

0:41:14 > 0:41:16Hi, I'm Brett from PrimeTime Plumbers.

0:41:16 > 0:41:17Oh, wow. That's quick.

0:41:17 > 0:41:18That's all done for you now.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21The fire's been serviced and your hot water's running.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23Thank you so much. We were freezing when we got in.

0:41:23 > 0:41:26Well, you know you can get the app from PrimeTime Plumbers, which

0:41:26 > 0:41:29enables you to be able to control all your heating from your phone.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31'PrimeTime Plumbers,

0:41:31 > 0:41:34'providing a local service to the nation 24/7.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37'Find us on Facebook and Twitter.'

0:41:39 > 0:41:44So, my vision for the brand is to expand it across the country,

0:41:44 > 0:41:47but it's the way we go to market is the difference.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50So we go to market through property management companies,

0:41:50 > 0:41:52getting large portfolios that way.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54This allows you to build the business very quickly

0:41:54 > 0:41:58and, hopefully, one day, we are a nationwide business.

0:41:58 > 0:42:02The future of this industry, in my mind, is going to be based

0:42:02 > 0:42:06around smart technology. Controlling our thermostats on the app,

0:42:06 > 0:42:09running a bath when we're not even at home, but I think it's key to

0:42:09 > 0:42:14not forget plumbing and heating has been around for thousands of years.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16It started basic in the Roman times

0:42:16 > 0:42:20and it's progressed throughout the years, and I think it's going

0:42:20 > 0:42:25to move on into the future, into the space age of our human race. So...

0:42:25 > 0:42:30Yeah, the plumbing and heating industry is massive, basically.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33I'd like to thank you all for listening to me today.

0:42:33 > 0:42:34Any questions?

0:42:34 > 0:42:35I loved your presentation,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38- I loved the energy and enthusiasm you brought to it.- Thank you.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41Your whole service concept really struck me -

0:42:41 > 0:42:42I think that's a good concept.

0:42:42 > 0:42:44How are you going to make sure you recruit

0:42:44 > 0:42:46and select engineers that live up to it?

0:42:46 > 0:42:49I think that it's a process that requires vetting.

0:42:49 > 0:42:53It's finding the right people and then it's holding on to those people,

0:42:53 > 0:42:56and making sure they don't leave your business.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59If you plan to grow through partnerships with property

0:42:59 > 0:43:02management companies, how are you going to get the business

0:43:02 > 0:43:05development skills that you need to win those contracts?

0:43:05 > 0:43:07I think it's key to build relationships,

0:43:07 > 0:43:11act very professional, talk to them about the service that you provide,

0:43:11 > 0:43:13tell them how easy you can make their life,

0:43:13 > 0:43:15to make your business stand out.

0:43:15 > 0:43:16APPLAUSE

0:43:19 > 0:43:20Thank you.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28Yes! Smashed it!

0:43:28 > 0:43:30So good! Well done!

0:43:30 > 0:43:32The feeling that that gave me must be

0:43:32 > 0:43:35like when you score in the World Cup!

0:43:35 > 0:43:39I thought it was terrifically articulate, very engaging,

0:43:39 > 0:43:41and he has a certain style and manner about him.

0:43:41 > 0:43:45He definitely is right that there are some growth markets

0:43:45 > 0:43:48in smart technologies, but he needs to really focus on what

0:43:48 > 0:43:51he's good at and to build a reputation for himself.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54I think he can build a nice business.

0:43:54 > 0:43:55I guess the question is -

0:43:55 > 0:43:58- can he build a really successful business?- Hm.

0:44:01 > 0:44:03Pitches over.

0:44:05 > 0:44:09Tomorrow, the final boardroom.

0:44:32 > 0:44:34You can go through to the boardroom now.

0:44:59 > 0:45:02- Good morning. - ALL:- Good morning, Lord Sugar.

0:45:02 > 0:45:07Well, welcome back, past candidates.

0:45:08 > 0:45:13I've got to choose today to fix broken hearts or broken boilers,

0:45:13 > 0:45:15- one of the two. - LAUGHTER

0:45:15 > 0:45:18So I'll start off with Joseph.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20So, on day one,

0:45:20 > 0:45:25you concentrated on the logo and the company name, is that right?

0:45:25 > 0:45:27That's right. I did spend a lot of time

0:45:27 > 0:45:29going through a number of names.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33- Yeah, PrimeTime Plumbers you came up with in the end, yeah?- Yep.

0:45:33 > 0:45:37- Mergim, you came up with an interesting one, didn't you?- Yeah.

0:45:37 > 0:45:39HE LAUGHS

0:45:39 > 0:45:43- Still inspired. - LAUGHTER

0:45:43 > 0:45:45It's nice to see you back again, Mergim.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48I was thinking about you the other day.

0:45:48 > 0:45:49I was demolishing a building somewhere

0:45:49 > 0:45:52and there was some shelves that had to be destroyed.

0:45:52 > 0:45:55I thought, "Mergim, that's right up your alley."

0:45:55 > 0:45:59Anyway, the logo and the digital billboard.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03Yeah, we were required to carry out the digital billboard.

0:46:03 > 0:46:06Joseph wanted pictures to signify exactly what the company does

0:46:06 > 0:46:10with regards to the plumbing, the heating and the renewable technologies

0:46:10 > 0:46:12and I think that we did really get that across.

0:46:12 > 0:46:14Feedback about it wasn't great though, was it?

0:46:14 > 0:46:17They just said it was a bit bland, that's all they did say.

0:46:17 > 0:46:19It sounds like pretty much a wasted day, I think, yeah?

0:46:19 > 0:46:22If I'm coming up with a brand and I'm presenting to you, I don't

0:46:22 > 0:46:26think spending a number of hours on it is a wasted day by any means.

0:46:26 > 0:46:29The name is not the be all and end all of a decision

0:46:29 > 0:46:33that I'm going to make over the business partner

0:46:33 > 0:46:36or whether business is successful. You know, what's in a name?

0:46:36 > 0:46:39What's important is to understand the business.

0:46:39 > 0:46:40That's what I set you to do.

0:46:40 > 0:46:43In fact, you sent Brett and Elle to talk

0:46:43 > 0:46:46to the lady from the large energy organisation.

0:46:46 > 0:46:48Yeah, that's right.

0:46:48 > 0:46:51You didn't think you were better off deployed going to see them?

0:46:51 > 0:46:53I'm lucky because I chose Brett and he's very clued up,

0:46:53 > 0:46:56and I feel that he was able to convey, along with Elle,

0:46:56 > 0:46:58the questions that I wanted answering.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00I didn't think I needed to meet her personally.

0:47:00 > 0:47:03One of Joseph's ideas is about this renewable energy.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06- That's correct.- Yeah.- She said that it's not really going to take off

0:47:06 > 0:47:09for another five to ten years, but it is important...

0:47:09 > 0:47:13- Five to 15 she told me, yeah. - Ah. Five to 15, yeah.

0:47:13 > 0:47:15Anyway, the video.

0:47:15 > 0:47:18I saw your acting ability in it, Mergim,

0:47:18 > 0:47:21and I would suggest that you stick to your day job.

0:47:21 > 0:47:25- HE LAUGHS - No, no, actually, it was OK.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27It was good, it told the story. Anyway...

0:47:27 > 0:47:30We did have an idea, once we got the storyboard,

0:47:30 > 0:47:33that it was going to look very, sort of '80s porno,

0:47:33 > 0:47:37where we've got a leak and then the plumber turns up.

0:47:37 > 0:47:38But we knew that it was for Joseph,

0:47:38 > 0:47:41so we had to get a serious take on it, and I'm pretty sure that

0:47:41 > 0:47:43Joseph was really happy with the end result, to be honest.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46- You was in it also.- A little bit, yeah.- You was the plumber, yeah.

0:47:46 > 0:47:48It only seemed right.

0:47:48 > 0:47:50Trustworthy plumber you look like.

0:47:50 > 0:47:55Easy to find as Lord Lucan, I think. And then, Joseph, you and Gary

0:47:55 > 0:47:58- went off to a focus group, is that right?- Yes, that's right.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01I know a lot about the domestic market, so I wanted to go to

0:48:01 > 0:48:04the large businesses and see what that market was all about.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07- It was a good meeting, wasn't it? - It was a really good meeting, yeah.

0:48:07 > 0:48:09You learnt a lot. And I'll tell you what else Joseph did,

0:48:09 > 0:48:12- he got the business cards of six or seven...- I heard about that.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14Yeah, leading businesses.

0:48:14 > 0:48:17You've got more cheek than Kim Kardashian, I think.

0:48:17 > 0:48:19- LAUGHTER - Yeah.

0:48:22 > 0:48:25- Yeah, that was good. Good. Happy working with Joseph?- Brilliant.

0:48:25 > 0:48:28- Absolutely brilliant.- Completely think it's going to work.

0:48:28 > 0:48:30- They good for you?- The team were amazing.

0:48:30 > 0:48:32- Once again, thank you very much for all your help.- Good.

0:48:32 > 0:48:36- Vana, you came up with this Date Play, didn't you?- Yes.

0:48:36 > 0:48:40There aren't many words related to playing and dating

0:48:40 > 0:48:42and the combination had to be right.

0:48:42 > 0:48:45The business model is all about playing a bit of a game.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48The ultimate goal, isn't it, that you're actually putting two people

0:48:48 > 0:48:52together, so that when they're down the pub in five years' time,

0:48:52 > 0:48:54they'll say, "Do you remember where we met?"

0:48:54 > 0:48:58"Yes, stage five of Space Invaders - I'll never forget it."

0:48:58 > 0:49:00LAUGHTER

0:49:00 > 0:49:04So, in the initial meeting, we wanted a unified strategy

0:49:04 > 0:49:06between the digital billboard, the branding and the video.

0:49:06 > 0:49:10Which looked like they came out of the same family, which is quite good

0:49:10 > 0:49:12from a marketing point of view.

0:49:12 > 0:49:15That shows that there's consistency in the marketing message,

0:49:15 > 0:49:18which was very good. Then, you three make the video.

0:49:18 > 0:49:20- You two are actually starring in it. - Yeah.

0:49:20 > 0:49:25This is a date where both of you have got your wedding rings on.

0:49:25 > 0:49:28- The perfect match. - LAUGHTER

0:49:28 > 0:49:33I would've actually upgraded on that day, if I was given that option,

0:49:33 > 0:49:35to actually take another match, Lord Sugar.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37It wouldn't work for me.

0:49:37 > 0:49:40- You can't say the same joke that many times.- Anyway, yeah, so...

0:49:40 > 0:49:44So Ruth and Natalie were going to go meet the app developers.

0:49:44 > 0:49:49We were briefed to ascertain whether or not this app could be

0:49:49 > 0:49:53launched within the funding that Vana is here to apply.

0:49:53 > 0:49:56I know, that is what I sent her off to talk about.

0:49:56 > 0:49:59I've got £250,000 to spend, that's it.

0:49:59 > 0:50:02I expect you to be making money, not coming, knocking on the door

0:50:02 > 0:50:05to me, six months later and saying, "Well, we've blown that.

0:50:05 > 0:50:07"Let's move on."

0:50:07 > 0:50:09Yeah, so I was really interested to hear

0:50:09 > 0:50:11the feedback from London app developers.

0:50:11 > 0:50:13We got some positives and negatives.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15A lot of people said you could definitely do it

0:50:15 > 0:50:17between 75,000 and 100,000.

0:50:17 > 0:50:20One man said that it would cost 250,000, so...

0:50:20 > 0:50:23I got it. You can build something for 150,000,

0:50:23 > 0:50:26but actually a proper one is going to cost a lot more -

0:50:26 > 0:50:27that's the bottom line.

0:50:27 > 0:50:32So, then, you made that phone call to the dating site expert

0:50:32 > 0:50:37and, in fact, you even quoted his positive statements at the event yesterday.

0:50:37 > 0:50:40The point was that I wanted to get an expert opinion

0:50:40 > 0:50:44to quell your concerns and to calm your worries about the funding problems.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47I think you were wonderfully manipulative in that conversation.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50You did quite leave out some of the elements that might have put

0:50:50 > 0:50:52- a negative slant on it.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:50:52 > 0:50:5515 new apps come to the market every week

0:50:55 > 0:50:58and 15 apps go bust every week, is that right?

0:50:58 > 0:51:00I think was his words, wasn't it?

0:51:00 > 0:51:03You might have that kind of radar where you kind of exclude...

0:51:03 > 0:51:06- Selective hearing.- Selective hearing hearing bad news.- Maybe.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09- So you're pleased to see on this team, yeah?- Very pleased, yep.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12- She was fantastic.- It was a great pleasure to work with her.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15- Exciting project, you think, yeah? - Massively, yes.

0:51:15 > 0:51:18The fact that linking gaming, which is incredibly popular online,

0:51:18 > 0:51:21and also dating, which again is a massively growing industry,

0:51:21 > 0:51:25you're almost bringing two big opportunities together.

0:51:25 > 0:51:30Well, very helpful, ladies and gentlemen. Thanks for coming back.

0:51:30 > 0:51:32It's nice to have seen you again. Thanks a lot.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35- ALL:- Thank you.

0:51:35 > 0:51:37Take care. Good luck.

0:51:37 > 0:51:40- Bye. Good luck, Vana.- Cheers, Vana.

0:51:40 > 0:51:42Bye. Good luck.

0:51:45 > 0:51:47JOSEPH CLEARS HIS THROAT

0:51:51 > 0:51:56Now, Vana, look, I spoke to all of these advisers yesterday

0:51:56 > 0:52:00and unanimously they agree with me

0:52:00 > 0:52:05that to think that £250,000

0:52:05 > 0:52:08is going to be enough to kick-start

0:52:08 > 0:52:12a revenue-earning dating application

0:52:12 > 0:52:15is naive, to say the least.

0:52:15 > 0:52:18In the presentation that I made to you yesterday,

0:52:18 > 0:52:22I had included the information about going to do a round of financing

0:52:22 > 0:52:25to venture capital firms and I will tell you

0:52:25 > 0:52:29up front that I want to prove this model and go raise more money.

0:52:29 > 0:52:35Am I getting the correct feedback from you now that this £250,000

0:52:35 > 0:52:42is really the seed money to prove the model works?

0:52:42 > 0:52:45Yes. Because of the nature of this industry, yes.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48Yes will be good enough to me. Prove the model works, right?

0:52:48 > 0:52:51That is correct. You would be investing in the fact that

0:52:51 > 0:52:55you have faith that I can bring this to fruition.

0:52:55 > 0:52:59If we can get 100,000 users in six months, we can go...

0:52:59 > 0:53:03- Free users.- It could be free users, it could be paying users,

0:53:03 > 0:53:07because venture capital firms tend to just want to see traction.

0:53:07 > 0:53:09They want to see that there's an upward trend.

0:53:09 > 0:53:10I know what they want to see

0:53:10 > 0:53:13cos I'm known to be a rather wealthy man

0:53:13 > 0:53:16and, when you go to the financial community,

0:53:16 > 0:53:17the first thing they will say is,

0:53:17 > 0:53:21"Yeah, we like the idea, we'll take a share of it,

0:53:21 > 0:53:23"but why doesn't Lord Sugar weigh in a bit more?"

0:53:23 > 0:53:25OK. I understand your concern.

0:53:25 > 0:53:28There's dozens of venture capital firms out there

0:53:28 > 0:53:30and, as you saw with my pitching skills,

0:53:30 > 0:53:33I guarantee I can make a pitch and get one investment at least.

0:53:33 > 0:53:37That's the way it's going to have to happen. OK. I've got it.

0:53:37 > 0:53:38I think I've got it now.

0:53:38 > 0:53:42Now, Joseph, I sent you off the other day to address how

0:53:42 > 0:53:44you are going to grow this business, right?

0:53:44 > 0:53:47Basically, what I was trying to show you with what I did yesterday of how

0:53:47 > 0:53:50we were going to grow was the only way we're going to do this

0:53:50 > 0:53:53is by moving into different towns, that is how we're going to grow,

0:53:53 > 0:53:55so what I would like to do with the money is

0:53:55 > 0:53:59basically purchase new vans to be able to move into the new areas.

0:53:59 > 0:54:02- Fair enough.- New tools and then pay wages for new staff

0:54:02 > 0:54:04to take on the new business.

0:54:04 > 0:54:06How are you going to drum up the business?

0:54:06 > 0:54:09Going round to the estate agents and doing exactly what I did in Peterborough.

0:54:09 > 0:54:12If I can do it there, I can replicate it in another city.

0:54:12 > 0:54:14Here I've got a big issue.

0:54:14 > 0:54:18- You've got my name associated with this proposed business, OK?- Mm-hm.

0:54:18 > 0:54:23Regretfully, the plumber market is known for, well,

0:54:23 > 0:54:26sorry to say, cowboys, OK?

0:54:26 > 0:54:30I don't want to appear on Anne Robinson's television programme

0:54:30 > 0:54:33or get a phone call from her, 12 o'clock at night,

0:54:33 > 0:54:36asking me to comment about a bad installation that was done

0:54:36 > 0:54:40in a company in which I am an investor.

0:54:40 > 0:54:42I think that's down to whether you believe in me

0:54:42 > 0:54:43- enough to be able to...- Exactly.

0:54:43 > 0:54:47- Exactly, but...- ..to not let that happen and to not let you down, in a sense.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50And just to let you know also, just one more quick thing,

0:54:50 > 0:54:53if you think it's small-time, I don't know exactly how much

0:54:53 > 0:54:56money you want me to make, but there is that plumbing and heating company

0:54:56 > 0:54:58in London that now currently turn over £14 million.

0:54:58 > 0:55:01That guy was a plumber that came from the same

0:55:01 > 0:55:03sort of background as me, so there is big money.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05I don't know exactly what you want,

0:55:05 > 0:55:08- if that's big enough for you or not...- That'll do for a start, yeah.

0:55:08 > 0:55:13I am going to have a very, very important chat with Karren

0:55:13 > 0:55:17and Claude, and then you're going to come back in here and I'm going

0:55:17 > 0:55:22to make my mind up which one of you is going to be my business partner.

0:55:33 > 0:55:35It's very, very difficult.

0:55:35 > 0:55:38You couldn't get a wider difference between the businesses.

0:55:38 > 0:55:40Claude, you've been following Vana.

0:55:40 > 0:55:42I think Vana's really coming into her own.

0:55:42 > 0:55:46I think that she showed true leadership skills with her team

0:55:46 > 0:55:49and the key about Vana is she knows her business inside out.

0:55:49 > 0:55:53I think the difficulty with Vana is it's sort of a double risk.

0:55:53 > 0:55:57First, she wants your £250,000 to prove that it's a concept

0:55:57 > 0:56:00that people will buy into and then she'll go off

0:56:00 > 0:56:03and get the big money that she needs to run this business.

0:56:03 > 0:56:06But she has got something unique within her concept.

0:56:08 > 0:56:12Joseph - I think he's a good bloke. I think he's a fine fellow.

0:56:12 > 0:56:14I think he takes great pride in the job that he does.

0:56:14 > 0:56:17I think he takes great pride in the fact that he's a hard worker.

0:56:17 > 0:56:21I mean, look, Joseph is the DNA of this business. You're buying him.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24You know, he may not be the finished article business-wise

0:56:24 > 0:56:26but you're buying him.

0:56:26 > 0:56:31The question is, can he retain the DNA whilst he builds the company?

0:56:31 > 0:56:34I think he will need a watchful eye.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36Tough one. Tough one.

0:56:36 > 0:56:37PHONE RINGS

0:56:39 > 0:56:43- Yes, Lord Sugar?- Could you send the two of them in, please?

0:56:43 > 0:56:45'Yes, Lord Sugar.'

0:56:45 > 0:56:47You can go through to the boardroom now.

0:57:01 > 0:57:06First of all, here you are, 12 weeks into the process, and you've done

0:57:06 > 0:57:12exceptionally well, whatever the outcome of today is going to be.

0:57:12 > 0:57:17So I have here a proposition, which is technology, and I'm known

0:57:17 > 0:57:19to be in this technology business.

0:57:19 > 0:57:20And then I have something,

0:57:20 > 0:57:25which is the service industry, which is a bit alien to me, I have to say.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28Why don't you, one last time, Joseph,

0:57:28 > 0:57:32tell me why you think you should be my business partner?

0:57:32 > 0:57:34Lord Sugar, I once read a book that changed my life -

0:57:34 > 0:57:37the title of the book was What You See Is What You Get.

0:57:37 > 0:57:40I'm now sat in front of the author of that book

0:57:40 > 0:57:43and what I'm saying to you is what you see is what you get.

0:57:43 > 0:57:46I've got ten years' experience in this industry, I'm driven,

0:57:46 > 0:57:49passionate, hard-working.

0:57:49 > 0:57:52Through these last 12 weeks, I've jumped through hoops to try

0:57:52 > 0:57:55and prove to you time and time again that I can adapt and change.

0:57:55 > 0:57:58I do need investment, I do need mentoring, but with that

0:57:58 > 0:58:01combination, I will make £1 million within five years -

0:58:01 > 0:58:03there's no doubt about that -

0:58:03 > 0:58:07and I hope you can see me as a person and I hope you buy into me.

0:58:07 > 0:58:11Hm. So, Vana, same question -

0:58:11 > 0:58:14why should you be my business partner?

0:58:14 > 0:58:17I think you've seen my performance in this process.

0:58:17 > 0:58:18You've seen how I manage people,

0:58:18 > 0:58:21you've seen how I operate in the tasks, you've heard from Claude

0:58:21 > 0:58:24and Karren how I operate in the business setting.

0:58:24 > 0:58:27And I will make sure that we generate revenues

0:58:27 > 0:58:29and generate profits.

0:58:29 > 0:58:32And, yes, I will need to raise further capital,

0:58:32 > 0:58:37but you would prefer to have a small piece of a bigger pie

0:58:37 > 0:58:40than a bigger piece of a smaller pie, and my business will make

0:58:40 > 0:58:44a bigger impact on the world than Joseph's business will.

0:58:44 > 0:58:46This app has potential to have a much bigger impact

0:58:46 > 0:58:47on a much larger scale.

0:58:47 > 0:58:51Your clients make £40 a month registration fee.

0:58:51 > 0:58:54We make £50 an hour on a callout fee.

0:58:54 > 0:58:57Just because it's not global, we can make a lot of money in this country.

0:58:57 > 0:58:59Lord Sugar, you're going to invest your £250,000

0:58:59 > 0:59:03and it's going to evaporate. There's no way it's going to take off...

0:59:03 > 0:59:06Lord Sugar, I have contacts in the industry that I'm going in.

0:59:06 > 0:59:08I'm not going in here blind.

0:59:08 > 0:59:11I have experience building websites.

0:59:11 > 0:59:16I am able to engage with investors and I am able to sell this product.

0:59:16 > 0:59:19- Hm. It's...- Could I say one more quick thing?- Yeah.

0:59:19 > 0:59:22Just very quickly, I know you really like technology and that's why

0:59:22 > 0:59:25I tried to picture about the smart technology yesterday.

0:59:25 > 0:59:28I think me and you could put smart technology into our industry,

0:59:28 > 0:59:31pioneer it and we could be the next big players

0:59:31 > 0:59:33in the smart technology in our industry.

0:59:34 > 0:59:37Look, I know this must be agonising for you,

0:59:37 > 0:59:39but I'm going to make a decision now.

0:59:41 > 0:59:45Joseph, yeah, you're right, what you see is what you get.

0:59:45 > 0:59:48I think I can see what I would get in you

0:59:48 > 0:59:53and you certainly impressed Claude and Karren over the past 12 weeks.

0:59:53 > 0:59:57But the service industry is one which, well, to be honest with you,

0:59:57 > 1:00:00I've never had anything to do with whatsoever.

1:00:00 > 1:00:02But I know it can be lucrative.

1:00:04 > 1:00:09Vana, you are a very, very, very clever lady -

1:00:09 > 1:00:10there is no question of that.

1:00:10 > 1:00:14You've adapted very well. You've understood thing well. You get it.

1:00:16 > 1:00:18I like technology, I love technology,

1:00:18 > 1:00:20that's what I've done all of my business life,

1:00:20 > 1:00:24and old habits die hard.

1:00:31 > 1:00:37Technology has been my best friend for over 50 years...

1:00:40 > 1:00:44..but maybe it's time to make new friends.

1:00:44 > 1:00:47And so, Joseph...

1:00:47 > 1:00:50you are going to be my business partner.

1:00:50 > 1:00:52Thank you.

1:00:52 > 1:00:54Thank you, Lord Sugar. It means the world to me.

1:00:54 > 1:00:55I'm not going to let you down.

1:00:55 > 1:00:57- Really appreciate it. - Congratulations.

1:00:57 > 1:00:58Thank you very much.

1:01:00 > 1:01:01So, very well done.

1:01:01 > 1:01:03Thanks a lot. Off you go.

1:01:03 > 1:01:04Thank you.

1:01:16 > 1:01:19From task one, I think he showed a certain calibre,

1:01:19 > 1:01:21a certain entrepreneurial flair,

1:01:21 > 1:01:24- that I think you don't see too often in a young man.- Yeah.

1:01:24 > 1:01:26It was a tough one, but you know what?

1:01:26 > 1:01:29Joseph, my money, my help - I think he can go far.

1:01:32 > 1:01:33Yes!

1:01:33 > 1:01:34Come on!

1:01:40 > 1:01:42Come on!

1:01:42 > 1:01:44I can't believe I'm Lord Sugar's business partner.

1:01:44 > 1:01:46I'm ready to work so, so hard.

1:01:46 > 1:01:48Since the day I was expelled from school,

1:01:48 > 1:01:51I always knew that I was going to do something big in my life.

1:01:51 > 1:01:53I'm come such a long way.

1:01:53 > 1:01:55I can finally now say that I'm proud of myself,

1:01:55 > 1:01:57I feel that I've achieved something big in my life,

1:01:57 > 1:01:59and I look forward to doing some amazing things

1:01:59 > 1:02:01with Lord Sugar in the future.

1:02:04 > 1:02:0618 candidates...

1:02:06 > 1:02:08one investment.

1:02:08 > 1:02:14Lord Sugar's search for a new business partner is over.

1:02:14 > 1:02:16APPLAUSE

1:02:21 > 1:02:25We have a winner. Lord Sugar has chosen his next business partner,

1:02:25 > 1:02:28which means I can say, "Good evening, I'm Jack Dee.

1:02:28 > 1:02:30"Welcome to The Apprentice - You're Hired."

1:02:30 > 1:02:33There was a tense moment tonight as, after 12 gruelling weeks,

1:02:33 > 1:02:34it looked like Lord Sugar had suddenly

1:02:34 > 1:02:37decided on a controversial way of choosing the winner.

1:02:37 > 1:02:40- Vana, heads or tails?- Heads.

1:02:41 > 1:02:43Meanwhile, chatting away in the car,

1:02:43 > 1:02:46Charleine got a frankly worrying response from Ruth.

1:02:46 > 1:02:48Really pleased to be on Vana's team.

1:02:48 > 1:02:51She's very switched on, very well-educated person -

1:02:51 > 1:02:53she'll know what she'll want to do.

1:02:53 > 1:02:55We are just vessels of Vana.

1:02:57 > 1:03:00Right, OK. Stop the car, please, I want to get out.

1:03:00 > 1:03:05And, of course, Mergim auditioned for EastEnders.

1:03:05 > 1:03:07Mergim, the fire's not working.

1:03:07 > 1:03:09Neither...is...the...bath.

1:03:10 > 1:03:14Yeah, look out, Eddie Redmayne, there's a new kid in town.

1:03:14 > 1:03:16Joining me on the panel for tonight's final,

1:03:16 > 1:03:18we have an embarrassment of riches.

1:03:18 > 1:03:21Internationally renowned business advisor Allyson Stewart-Allen,

1:03:21 > 1:03:23bestselling author and columnist Grace Dent

1:03:23 > 1:03:26and, enough of the riches, is time for the embarrassment -

1:03:26 > 1:03:27it's Romesh Ranganathan.

1:03:27 > 1:03:30Welcome to You're Hired. APPLAUSE

1:03:33 > 1:03:37So, our runner-up made it all the way to the final

1:03:37 > 1:03:41but, in the end, it was, "Close, but no Su-gar."

1:03:41 > 1:03:42LAUGHTER AND GROANS

1:03:44 > 1:03:48I honestly have no idea how that pun made it through to the final.

1:03:50 > 1:03:56Technology has been my best friend for over 50 years...

1:03:59 > 1:04:02..but maybe it's time to make new friends.

1:04:02 > 1:04:09And so, Joseph, you are going to be my business partner.

1:04:09 > 1:04:10Thank you.

1:04:10 > 1:04:12Thank you, Lord Sugar. It means the world to me.

1:04:12 > 1:04:15I'm not going to let you down.

1:04:15 > 1:04:18- Congratulations. - Thank you very much.

1:04:19 > 1:04:22Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the runner-up

1:04:22 > 1:04:26of The Apprentice 2015 - Vana Koutsomitis.

1:04:26 > 1:04:28AUDIENCE CHEERS

1:04:36 > 1:04:37- Oh, Vana!- Hi!

1:04:37 > 1:04:40So good to have you here.

1:04:40 > 1:04:44And what a popular candidate you've been - you can tell already.

1:04:44 > 1:04:46I'm very happy to be here.

1:04:46 > 1:04:48You know what? Congratulations for getting so far.

1:04:48 > 1:04:50It must have been a tough choice, in the end.

1:04:50 > 1:04:52If only there was some kind of gaming app,

1:04:52 > 1:04:54where Lord Sugar could have been able to know

1:04:54 > 1:04:57who he's best matched to, do you think?

1:04:57 > 1:04:59I mean, it was a very close-run thing, we know that.

1:04:59 > 1:05:02You may not have come away with an investment,

1:05:02 > 1:05:05but you've gained a lot doing this process, surely?

1:05:05 > 1:05:07Yeah, and I think, you know, it's all about the match,

1:05:07 > 1:05:08so, if you make the right match,

1:05:08 > 1:05:12if you and your investor feel that you're compatible,

1:05:12 > 1:05:15and you feel that you have the same vision of the future,

1:05:15 > 1:05:18and you have the same risk appetite, then it works really well.

1:05:18 > 1:05:19But if you don't feel that way,

1:05:19 > 1:05:21then it's kind of better to go your separate ways.

1:05:21 > 1:05:23Did you have a lot of fun doing it?

1:05:23 > 1:05:25- I had a lot of fun.- You had fun.

1:05:25 > 1:05:27I learned so much, so it's been great.

1:05:27 > 1:05:29Vana, one thing want to know - in the house,

1:05:29 > 1:05:32why do all the girls do their hair on the landing?

1:05:34 > 1:05:35- So...- What's that about?

1:05:35 > 1:05:37- It's a huge house! - Well, I'm not used to it,

1:05:37 > 1:05:40but in the UK you can't plug in your blow-dryers

1:05:40 > 1:05:42or hair curlers in the bathroom.

1:05:42 > 1:05:44In the US, we can, so this is, like, new to me.

1:05:44 > 1:05:47So, we had to sit in this special little area with a little mirror

1:05:47 > 1:05:49and do... We actually had to stack up,

1:05:49 > 1:05:51so I would have to go on the floor cos I was taller than Charleine,

1:05:51 > 1:05:53and then Charleine would go behind me,

1:05:53 > 1:05:55and we would, like, simultaneously do our hair.

1:05:55 > 1:05:56It took coordination.

1:05:56 > 1:05:59Sorry about our electrics in this country, anyway.

1:05:59 > 1:06:02No... Nothing... It's actually safer, it's actually safer.

1:06:02 > 1:06:03OK, that's good to know.

1:06:03 > 1:06:06- Yeah.- At least we've got health and safety on our side.

1:06:06 > 1:06:09Romesh, did you have Vana down as a finalist right from the beginning?

1:06:09 > 1:06:11No.

1:06:11 > 1:06:12LAUGHTER

1:06:12 > 1:06:14Not that I thought you were bad or anything,

1:06:14 > 1:06:16but, you know, you seemed to have the skills,

1:06:16 > 1:06:19particularly when it came to where you had to go

1:06:19 > 1:06:23and buy the items - I thought you had a bit of a wobble there.

1:06:23 > 1:06:26- That was a tough one for me. - Yeah, I mean, especially...

1:06:26 > 1:06:28- The cheese, really, like...- OK.

1:06:28 > 1:06:30It really outfoxed you, didn't it?

1:06:30 > 1:06:33You were sort of going, "Isn't all cheese whole?" It was...

1:06:33 > 1:06:37Yeah, but in fairness, where Vana comes from, cheese comes in aerosols,

1:06:37 > 1:06:39- so...- Exactly.

1:06:39 > 1:06:42- You weren't to know, were you? - Exactly. I was just really confused.

1:06:42 > 1:06:48But having said that, as the process went on, as each task went by,

1:06:48 > 1:06:50you just sort of looked stronger

1:06:50 > 1:06:52and stronger throughout the whole process.

1:06:52 > 1:06:54So, no, I didn't have you pegged as a finalist from the beginning,

1:06:54 > 1:06:57- but your qualities shone through very quickly.- Thank you.

1:06:57 > 1:06:59Well, you might have put together a fantastic pitch

1:06:59 > 1:07:01but, in the end, it wasn't quite enough.

1:07:01 > 1:07:04Let's just have a look at why.

1:07:04 > 1:07:06Vana, you really need to prove to me that there is a

1:07:06 > 1:07:09market out there for your dating business.

1:07:09 > 1:07:11So, essentially, it's an online dating app.

1:07:11 > 1:07:13It's about playing games

1:07:13 > 1:07:15in order to figure out who you should be matched with.

1:07:15 > 1:07:19Is this possible with £250,000?

1:07:19 > 1:07:21'I think it's possible.'

1:07:21 > 1:07:24I think there's room for something new.

1:07:24 > 1:07:27I'm introducing Date Play.

1:07:27 > 1:07:30'It's a match!'

1:07:30 > 1:07:31'Date Play -

1:07:31 > 1:07:34'date while you play.'

1:07:34 > 1:07:36I'd invest in her as a person.

1:07:36 > 1:07:38In terms of the idea, I think she's going to need a bit more help.

1:07:38 > 1:07:45This £250,000 is really to prove the model works.

1:07:45 > 1:07:49Yes, I will need to raise further capital,

1:07:49 > 1:07:53but you would prefer to have a small piece of a bigger pie

1:07:53 > 1:07:55than a bigger piece of a smaller pie.

1:07:56 > 1:08:00Well, sadly, as we now know, it was, "Bye-bye, Miss American Pie."

1:08:00 > 1:08:02See what I did there? That was...

1:08:02 > 1:08:06That was as good a link as you'll ever get, I think.

1:08:06 > 1:08:08So, Vana, your idea itself was very well-received,

1:08:08 > 1:08:10people seemed to like it,

1:08:10 > 1:08:13but it was the finance side of it that sort of...

1:08:13 > 1:08:15Had you underestimated who much it was going to cost?

1:08:15 > 1:08:19I think that I thought of this more as a seed investment,

1:08:19 > 1:08:21and I thought of it more on the tech side of things,

1:08:21 > 1:08:24- because that's the kind of world I have been working in recently.- Yeah.

1:08:24 > 1:08:28So, I actually wasn't thinking that it would just be 250,000

1:08:28 > 1:08:32and, all of a sudden, I'd become... I'd create a million dollar company.

1:08:32 > 1:08:34I thought it would be 250,000,

1:08:34 > 1:08:39then another round of investment, and then a 50 million company.

1:08:39 > 1:08:40Grace, what impressed you about Vana?

1:08:40 > 1:08:44You are clever and capable, and likeable,

1:08:44 > 1:08:46and I think it shone through.

1:08:46 > 1:08:49I think you are someone that can be trusted to get things done.

1:08:49 > 1:08:52And whether it's selling houses or making sure a cake gets made,

1:08:52 > 1:08:55there's a lot to like in you.

1:08:55 > 1:08:58- Did you like the idea of this dating app?- Yeah.

1:08:58 > 1:09:01I mean, I was thrilled to see someone bring an app

1:09:01 > 1:09:02to the table this time.

1:09:02 > 1:09:05I've been kind of waiting for this to come, you know,

1:09:05 > 1:09:08to be more of a fixture on The Apprentice.

1:09:08 > 1:09:11My slight issue with it was that, however it goes,

1:09:11 > 1:09:14you always end up going out with a gamer. Isn't that the problem?

1:09:14 > 1:09:16- No!- How long do you have to go out with them before you say,

1:09:16 > 1:09:19"Look, I'm not really into Warhammer, I just wanted a girlfriend"?

1:09:19 > 1:09:21You know, if you're on the Tube in the mornings,

1:09:21 > 1:09:24you notice that everyone is playing Candy Crush.

1:09:24 > 1:09:26I mean, even your grandma plays Candy Crush,

1:09:26 > 1:09:29so it's not necessarily gamers any more. Now it's mainstream.

1:09:29 > 1:09:33- OK, that's...and are you still going to develop the idea?- Yeah.

1:09:33 > 1:09:35I'm really excited about it and I really believe in the idea.

1:09:35 > 1:09:37Oh, good. Good for you.

1:09:37 > 1:09:41Allyson, do you detect there's a particular American style

1:09:41 > 1:09:42that Vana has brought to the process?

1:09:42 > 1:09:47I do. I think, you know, one of the things we do extremely well

1:09:47 > 1:09:50is embrace anything new, and it's part of our culture,

1:09:50 > 1:09:52and the fact that Vana positioned this as,

1:09:52 > 1:09:54"This is new, therefore exciting,"

1:09:54 > 1:09:56implies that therefore it's better -

1:09:56 > 1:09:58and that works extremely well in the US.

1:09:58 > 1:10:01This side of the Atlantic, however, people are a little more sceptical.

1:10:01 > 1:10:05It takes a little more convincing to get people to like new things.

1:10:05 > 1:10:08- Yeah.- So...but I wouldn't lose that enthusiasm

1:10:08 > 1:10:10and I wouldn't lose that positioning.

1:10:10 > 1:10:12- I think you did a fantastic job. - Thank you.

1:10:12 > 1:10:15Do you feel, over the process, you've changed your approach to business -

1:10:15 > 1:10:18from being in the UK, or just from what you've learned?

1:10:18 > 1:10:21I think I changed my approach to business

1:10:21 > 1:10:24because, at the beginning, I kind of came in there being, like,

1:10:24 > 1:10:27"I really want to do it and I'm going to make everyone know it."

1:10:27 > 1:10:29- Mm-hm.- And then eventually I started realising

1:10:29 > 1:10:30that that wasn't really the style here

1:10:30 > 1:10:32and it was more appropriate to kind of, like...

1:10:32 > 1:10:34Even if you really want to do something,

1:10:34 > 1:10:36pretend that you don't, really,

1:10:36 > 1:10:39because then people will be, like, more open to the idea.

1:10:39 > 1:10:41- So, that's your summary... - That's what I learned.

1:10:41 > 1:10:43..of being in Britain, really, isn't it?

1:10:43 > 1:10:46Lose the enthusiasm, you might get somewhere.

1:10:46 > 1:10:48LAUGHTER

1:10:49 > 1:10:51More than any other candidate, though,

1:10:51 > 1:10:54you've shown that you would be at home doing business

1:10:54 > 1:10:55anywhere in the world.

1:10:55 > 1:10:56Let's have a look at this.

1:10:57 > 1:10:59I was born and bred in New York City,

1:10:59 > 1:11:02and that has taught me that you have to be both street smart

1:11:02 > 1:11:04and charismatic in order to be a good leader.

1:11:04 > 1:11:05I speak French

1:11:05 > 1:11:08and that will be a tool we can use quite well on the ground there.

1:11:08 > 1:11:10- Bonjour.- Bonjour.

1:11:10 > 1:11:12- Est-ce que vous parlez anglais? - Little bit.

1:11:12 > 1:11:15- We're four nice girls... - Yes!- ..coming from the UK.

1:11:15 > 1:11:18- Seven for 45.- OK.

1:11:18 > 1:11:2045 euros for seven crystal glasses -

1:11:20 > 1:11:23that's gotta be a steal in anyone's book.

1:11:27 > 1:11:28You did do a good deal.

1:11:28 > 1:11:31My parents are actually architects in New York, so I'm...

1:11:31 > 1:11:33- Oh, so it's an easy conversation! - Yeah, yeah.

1:11:33 > 1:11:35Where are you from, by the way? Are you Italian?

1:11:35 > 1:11:36From Brazil!

1:11:36 > 1:11:38My parents have a three-bedroom in New York

1:11:38 > 1:11:41and they're architects, so I know what the flow will be like.

1:11:41 > 1:11:44- Thank you.- Thank you.- Thank you! - Take care.- Bye.

1:11:49 > 1:11:51So, Vana, you were born in New York

1:11:51 > 1:11:54and you went to university in Beijing.

1:11:54 > 1:11:57So, actually, it was Shanghai. I'm half Colombian, half Greek.

1:11:57 > 1:11:59My mother's Colombian, father's Greek

1:11:59 > 1:12:01and grew up in New York, but studied abroad quite a bit,

1:12:01 > 1:12:05so I studied in Shanghai and in Paris and in Madrid.

1:12:05 > 1:12:06Cos you speak a lot of languages, we found out.

1:12:06 > 1:12:09But there was one language that really struggled with, wasn't there?

1:12:09 > 1:12:12- Let's just remind ourselves what that was.- Oh...

1:12:12 > 1:12:13I'm going to be fluent in Mancunian.

1:12:13 > 1:12:15It's like, "Manchestarrr."

1:12:15 > 1:12:18- "Manchestarrr," like... - Manchestarrr...

1:12:19 > 1:12:21Manche... Give it... You were nearly there. Have another try.

1:12:21 > 1:12:23- So, I've been practising...- Yeah?

1:12:23 > 1:12:26And I'd say, "I love Man-ches-TA."

1:12:26 > 1:12:28- LAUGHTER - Is it better?

1:12:28 > 1:12:30- Is that Mandarin?- It sounded...

1:12:30 > 1:12:34It sounded a little bit like my mum, actually.

1:12:34 > 1:12:37You've got your family here, you said earlier?

1:12:37 > 1:12:38- Yes, I have.- Who've you got here?

1:12:38 > 1:12:40I have my boyfriend, Joris,

1:12:40 > 1:12:42my mom, Maria, and my sister Alexandra.

1:12:42 > 1:12:45Hello! We want to know, firstly, how you met your boyfriend.

1:12:45 > 1:12:47- I met him... - LAUGHTER

1:12:47 > 1:12:49I, regretfully, didn't meet him online.

1:12:49 > 1:12:53- Yeah?- I met him at Oxford on our MBA programme.- OK.- Yeah.

1:12:53 > 1:12:56- Welcome.- Alexandra, what was Vana like as a sister?

1:12:56 > 1:12:58Was she always entrepreneurial?

1:12:58 > 1:13:02I tell the story all the time about how she would take my toys

1:13:02 > 1:13:04from the apartment and go downstairs,

1:13:04 > 1:13:05and sell them on the street.

1:13:05 > 1:13:06LAUGHTER

1:13:06 > 1:13:09You must, as a family, you must be very proud of her now.

1:13:09 > 1:13:10- Yeah.- Yeah.- Amazing.

1:13:10 > 1:13:12Now, throughout the evening,

1:13:12 > 1:13:14we'll be presenting The Apprentice Awards -

1:13:14 > 1:13:17known in the industry as the Sugars - to various candidates.

1:13:17 > 1:13:19They're sitting up there, in the audience,

1:13:19 > 1:13:21and let's hear about the first award.

1:13:27 > 1:13:28And the nominations are...

1:13:30 > 1:13:34..Ruth, for losing her shoe, but not her composure...

1:13:34 > 1:13:36Ooh!

1:13:36 > 1:13:40Lost a shoe. I lost my shoe! Keep going, keep going!

1:13:40 > 1:13:45..Mergim, for trying to sell fish to a vegan restaurant...

1:13:45 > 1:13:48I want to offer you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

1:13:48 > 1:13:50The fish.

1:13:50 > 1:13:51Um, first thing...

1:13:51 > 1:13:53That we are a vegan restaurant.

1:13:53 > 1:13:56Is there anything I can do to convince you at all?

1:13:56 > 1:13:58No. Thank you.

1:13:58 > 1:14:01..Gary, for refusing to give up on his dream of cheaper cod...

1:14:01 > 1:14:03We're looking at 15 kilos.

1:14:03 > 1:14:05- 15 - you've got to do us better than that.- Gary!

1:14:05 > 1:14:07- Can you...?- 8?- Gary!

1:14:08 > 1:14:11..and Gary, for refusing to give up on his bid

1:14:11 > 1:14:14to climb a four-foot fence.

1:14:14 > 1:14:16I'm stuck!

1:14:16 > 1:14:17Let's go!

1:14:20 > 1:14:21APPLAUSE

1:14:21 > 1:14:26Vana, would you do us the honours and let us know who the winner is?

1:14:26 > 1:14:28And the winner is...

1:14:28 > 1:14:31- Mergim!- Mergim! AUDIENCE CHEERS

1:14:31 > 1:14:34Romesh will make the presentation.

1:14:34 > 1:14:35- Get in there!- Excuse me.

1:14:35 > 1:14:37Excuse me.

1:14:37 > 1:14:38Excuse me.

1:14:38 > 1:14:40There we go.

1:14:42 > 1:14:45- Mergim.- Yes.- Congratulations.

1:14:45 > 1:14:46- Thank you.- How do you feel?

1:14:46 > 1:14:48Oh, it's just an honour. Honestly, like...

1:14:48 > 1:14:50I never thought this day would ever happen.

1:14:50 > 1:14:52- It really is, like... - You won something!

1:14:52 > 1:14:54Yeah, I've actually won something in my life!

1:14:54 > 1:14:56- BRETT:- You might be able to put it on a shelf, now.- Yeah!

1:14:56 > 1:14:57LAUGHTER

1:14:57 > 1:14:59I'll bring you round to sort it out, yeah?

1:14:59 > 1:15:01Yeah, it's literally, like,

1:15:01 > 1:15:03I think it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,

1:15:03 > 1:15:05and in life you've got to try the impossible.

1:15:05 > 1:15:08- OK, don't build up your part. - Congratulations, Mergim!

1:15:13 > 1:15:14So, now, Vana,

1:15:14 > 1:15:17I don't want to denigrate your business skills at all,

1:15:17 > 1:15:19but it would seem that you had a bit of an unfair advantage

1:15:19 > 1:15:21all the way through the process.

1:15:21 > 1:15:23Is it true you have - how shall we put it -

1:15:23 > 1:15:25a psychic side to you?

1:15:25 > 1:15:27I wouldn't say it's a psychic side.

1:15:27 > 1:15:30- I think I just like using astrology to match people...- Mm-hm.

1:15:30 > 1:15:33..and it's something that I get a lot of crap for.

1:15:33 > 1:15:35People say, "Ugh, that's so silly.

1:15:35 > 1:15:37"You're so educated, how could you believe in that?"

1:15:37 > 1:15:40But it's worked for me, so I stand by my beliefs.

1:15:40 > 1:15:43So, you can tell when you meet people what their star sign is?

1:15:43 > 1:15:44Yeah, and I can ask them a few questions

1:15:44 > 1:15:46and figure out quite easily.

1:15:46 > 1:15:48Well, I'm normally fairly sceptical about that kind of thing,

1:15:48 > 1:15:51but have a look at this.

1:15:51 > 1:15:52X-FILES THEME PLAYS

1:15:52 > 1:15:54Vana, she's a bit of a psychic.

1:15:54 > 1:15:58She's into her dating scene, she's all about the star signs.

1:15:58 > 1:16:00Everything with Vana is star signs -

1:16:00 > 1:16:03the first thing is she tries and guesses.

1:16:03 > 1:16:04The crazy thing about Vana,

1:16:04 > 1:16:07and I think what gives credibility to the star sign thing is,

1:16:07 > 1:16:10she will guess people's star signs

1:16:10 > 1:16:12without having asked them a single question.

1:16:12 > 1:16:15It's very interesting because she often gets it right.

1:16:15 > 1:16:16I do think she is a bit psychic, in a way.

1:16:19 > 1:16:20LAUGHTER

1:16:28 > 1:16:29- I like it.- I like that.

1:16:31 > 1:16:32Yeah.

1:16:34 > 1:16:36- Ooh, that was pretty spooky, wasn't it?- Spooky!

1:16:36 > 1:16:39Tell me, in your premonition, did you win The Apprentice,

1:16:39 > 1:16:40or were you runner-up still?

1:16:40 > 1:16:43- Actually, I had a dream that I was runner-up...- Did you?

1:16:43 > 1:16:45..and I know that sounds crazy, but it actually happened.

1:16:45 > 1:16:49Grace - mysticism, star signs, astrology - are you into all that?

1:16:49 > 1:16:51- No, it's rubbish. - LAUGHTER

1:16:51 > 1:16:52No, well, it kind of is,

1:16:52 > 1:16:56but I do know that lots of people really do love it -

1:16:56 > 1:17:01and it's also very lucrative, so maybe you could move into that,

1:17:01 > 1:17:04- because some of the most... - No.- ..profitable journalists

1:17:04 > 1:17:07are the ones that write the astrology columns.

1:17:07 > 1:17:09- But...- It's true! - Those are the most profitable?

1:17:09 > 1:17:11Yeah. And they do the phone lines,

1:17:11 > 1:17:12and they have people like Vana ring up...

1:17:12 > 1:17:15- Oh, I know about the phone lines. - You know what I mean?

1:17:15 > 1:17:17- There's a serious point to this, Allyson, isn't there?- Mm.

1:17:17 > 1:17:19- There's intuition, isn't there? - Absolutely.

1:17:19 > 1:17:22You go on a gut feeling sometimes in business - you go on a hunch.

1:17:22 > 1:17:25Yes, and, in fact, the best leaders, and the best businesses,

1:17:25 > 1:17:28are those that have been founded on people that had that intuition

1:17:28 > 1:17:31and stuck with it, even when people said,

1:17:31 > 1:17:33"Oh, that's crazy. That's superstition."

1:17:33 > 1:17:35Think about the bagless vacuum cleaner,

1:17:35 > 1:17:37think about the portable music players -

1:17:37 > 1:17:40those were really from, you know,

1:17:40 > 1:17:43the leaders thinking, "This is the right thing to do.

1:17:43 > 1:17:45"I believe the market wants this."

1:17:45 > 1:17:48- So, you know, it pays a lot of money when you get it right.- Yeah, sure.

1:17:48 > 1:17:51OK, well, as you know, throughout the series,

1:17:51 > 1:17:55Romesh has been investigating what it might be like to be a candidate,

1:17:55 > 1:17:57so what have you been looking at this week, Romesh?

1:17:57 > 1:17:59Well, obviously I had a go at all of the tasks

1:17:59 > 1:18:01and the one thing I haven't done

1:18:01 > 1:18:03is see what it's like to be on the losing team.

1:18:03 > 1:18:06Obviously that's outside of my realm of experience.

1:18:06 > 1:18:08- LAUGHTER - What I decided to do was simulate

1:18:08 > 1:18:10what it would be like to be on the losing team

1:18:10 > 1:18:12and I took a visit to the losers' cafe.

1:18:12 > 1:18:14Oh, great. Let's have a look.

1:18:14 > 1:18:18Excuse me, could I get a skinny soya macchiato, please?

1:18:22 > 1:18:24I guess that's a no, then.

1:18:24 > 1:18:27Who's responsible for the failure of this task?

1:18:29 > 1:18:30As project manager for the losing task,

1:18:30 > 1:18:33I've now got to make the decision of who to take back

1:18:33 > 1:18:34into the boardroom with me.

1:18:34 > 1:18:36Gary, I'm taking you back to the boardroom.

1:18:36 > 1:18:38I've got no choice. I've got to take somebody back.

1:18:38 > 1:18:40And you know what, Charleine? You're coming, too.

1:18:40 > 1:18:43They're not responsible for the failure of this task,

1:18:43 > 1:18:45but I'd just quite like to see them get fired.

1:18:45 > 1:18:47Richard, why don't you just piss off, mate?

1:18:47 > 1:18:50Joseph, where are you going?

1:19:03 > 1:19:05- Well, good morning. - Good morning, Lord Sugar.

1:19:05 > 1:19:07Let's get going, then.

1:19:07 > 1:19:09APPLAUSE

1:19:12 > 1:19:15Yeah, well, I know who'd I'd fire - but let's wait and see what happens.

1:19:15 > 1:19:19In the meantime, I'm pleased to say that we have the proprietor

1:19:19 > 1:19:21of the Bridge Cafe with us tonight.

1:19:21 > 1:19:23Please welcome Frank Marcangelo. Here he is.

1:19:23 > 1:19:25APPLAUSE

1:19:25 > 1:19:26How are you, Frank?

1:19:30 > 1:19:33Frank, does it bother you that your cafe

1:19:33 > 1:19:35is now known as the "Loser Cafe"?

1:19:35 > 1:19:38No, not really. It's actually increased the business a lot.

1:19:38 > 1:19:40- LAUGHTER Has it?- I bet it has!

1:19:40 > 1:19:41- People love to come there.- Do they?

1:19:41 > 1:19:43They see you on The Apprentice, they want to come along?

1:19:43 > 1:19:46- Yeah, they come from all over the place.- Do they?

1:19:46 > 1:19:48We've even had people from Australia, Hong Kong.

1:19:48 > 1:19:50It's ridiculous, really, but it's true.

1:19:50 > 1:19:52And they've all said, "We've seen The Apprentice..."

1:19:52 > 1:19:54- Yeah, they love it. - Cos I've got to say,

1:19:54 > 1:19:56there's nothing else appeals about it, to me, than...

1:19:56 > 1:19:58HE LAUGHS

1:19:58 > 1:19:59ROMESH CRACKS UP

1:20:01 > 1:20:06And do they all come in and sit round with plastic cups and have a row?

1:20:06 > 1:20:09We only use plastic cups for The Apprentice, actually.

1:20:09 > 1:20:10We have got china cups, really.

1:20:10 > 1:20:13AUDIENCE GROANS No, no, no, no.

1:20:13 > 1:20:16- Yeah.- Since we're having a little dig at me.

1:20:16 > 1:20:19Well, listen, thanks very much for taking the time and coming down.

1:20:19 > 1:20:21- My pleasure. - Let's hear it for Frank Marcangelo.

1:20:21 > 1:20:23APPLAUSE

1:20:23 > 1:20:28So that brings me to your catering skills, Vana.

1:20:28 > 1:20:32In particular, the very delicious looking dehydrated crisps

1:20:32 > 1:20:34that you made in the...

1:20:34 > 1:20:38Yeah, OK. Those actually tasted really good!

1:20:38 > 1:20:40I know you won't believe it, but...

1:20:40 > 1:20:42Until you tipped a litre of oil all over them!

1:20:42 > 1:20:43LAUGHTER

1:20:43 > 1:20:46And then you dumped Richard in it, by blaming the packaging,

1:20:46 > 1:20:48for which we love you all the more.

1:20:50 > 1:20:53- But you got on quite well with Richard, didn't you?- Yes.

1:20:53 > 1:20:56I think Richard was actually one of the most talented candidates

1:20:56 > 1:20:58when it came to marketing, creativity.

1:20:58 > 1:21:02He knew how to pitch, and he knew how to make things happen

1:21:02 > 1:21:04when it came to branding, so he was on his own.

1:21:04 > 1:21:06I blamed him because I genuinely thought

1:21:06 > 1:21:07that he should have listened to me,

1:21:07 > 1:21:10and I wanted to get back at him for the sous slave incident,

1:21:10 > 1:21:14where he tried to basically make me his slave in the kitchen.

1:21:14 > 1:21:17- Yes, for the children's party, making the cake?- Yeah.

1:21:17 > 1:21:18He wanted to make me the sous slave

1:21:18 > 1:21:20by having me do all the cutting of the bread,

1:21:20 > 1:21:23then he wouldn't let me touch the cake, and it was like,

1:21:23 > 1:21:25- I knew how to fix the cake. He wouldn't let me touch it.- Yeah.

1:21:25 > 1:21:28But you beasted him, didn't you, because in the end,

1:21:28 > 1:21:30- he was bowing to you by the end of the property series.- Exactly.

1:21:30 > 1:21:32So yeah, good for you.

1:21:32 > 1:21:34- Richard, how are you? Are you all right?- I'm very good, thank you.

1:21:34 > 1:21:37Vana chose you to be in her team,

1:21:37 > 1:21:39Selina chose you to be in her team for the children's party.

1:21:39 > 1:21:42- Why do you think that was? - Because I'm amazing, obviously!

1:21:42 > 1:21:44- LAUGHTER - Oh, here we go!

1:21:44 > 1:21:47Ah, it's good to see you haven't changed, Richard.

1:21:47 > 1:21:48Exactly! Nothing changes here!

1:21:48 > 1:21:50You did manage the impossible tonight.

1:21:50 > 1:21:54You got Richard and Charleine to act as loving couple, didn't you?

1:21:54 > 1:21:55Did that take some persuading?

1:21:55 > 1:21:59By the end of the process, I was just, like, taskmaster.

1:21:59 > 1:22:01I was like, "You're doing this.

1:22:01 > 1:22:04"You're acting like you're in love, we're going to make this happen,"

1:22:04 > 1:22:06because there was no time or room for error.

1:22:06 > 1:22:09Yeah, the lovely Ruth as well. Ruth is here. Ruth.

1:22:09 > 1:22:11And you were a vessel of Vana,

1:22:11 > 1:22:14- weren't you?- A vessel of Vana. Absolutely, yeah!

1:22:14 > 1:22:19- Tell me, were Charleine and Richard explosive enough?- Well, they were!

1:22:19 > 1:22:22Of course, you know, I wasn't in the process at that time,

1:22:22 > 1:22:24so I didn't realise that these guys weren't getting on,

1:22:24 > 1:22:26so I just thought, you know, fall in love,

1:22:26 > 1:22:27and they were like... "No!"

1:22:27 > 1:22:29Now, as ever this year,

1:22:29 > 1:22:32the candidates' every move was monitored by Lord Sugar's aides,

1:22:32 > 1:22:35who reported their progress back to him.

1:22:35 > 1:22:38As you'd expect, Claude and Karren were not easily impressed.

1:22:38 > 1:22:40I don't know why you're laughing.

1:22:40 > 1:22:42I think we're in trouble with this lot.

1:22:42 > 1:22:44# Uh-oh, we're in trouble... #

1:22:44 > 1:22:46You've got to engage your brain at some point.

1:22:46 > 1:22:49They don't know the first thing about actually how honey is made.

1:22:49 > 1:22:53You said that people over the age of 45 don't understand anything new.

1:22:53 > 1:22:55No, I don't think I said they don't understand anything new.

1:22:55 > 1:22:58Doesn't matter what you meant by it, it was very insulting.

1:22:58 > 1:23:00They're all lambs to the slaughter,

1:23:00 > 1:23:02because none of them seem capable of coming to a decision.

1:23:02 > 1:23:05You wouldn't want to go into an events business with him,

1:23:05 > 1:23:08having watched that party, I can assure you. It was bad.

1:23:08 > 1:23:10You two were impressive.

1:23:10 > 1:23:11You two, not so much.

1:23:11 > 1:23:14What a complete waste of time!

1:23:14 > 1:23:15- Mergim?- Yes?

1:23:15 > 1:23:18- Do you know what you're doing? - Yes. Screwing a nail.

1:23:20 > 1:23:21"Screwing a nail"?

1:23:22 > 1:23:25I think I'm going to have to go down and lie down for a while,

1:23:25 > 1:23:27and put a cold towel on my head.

1:23:27 > 1:23:30Sam should be so embarrassed about this.

1:23:30 > 1:23:31She just didn't put her back into it.

1:23:31 > 1:23:33Which would you rather have, Karren -

1:23:33 > 1:23:34someone who is very enthusiastic

1:23:34 > 1:23:37or somebody who doesn't seem to care that much?

1:23:37 > 1:23:39- Rather have neither.- True.

1:23:42 > 1:23:45Vana, you had a bit of a run-in with Karren in the boardroom.

1:23:45 > 1:23:51She sort of told you off for giggling after the discount task.

1:23:51 > 1:23:54Who is scarier - Karren, Claude, Lord Sugar?

1:23:54 > 1:23:58Erm...I think they're all pretty scary in different ways.

1:23:58 > 1:24:02So I would say that Lord Sugar is number one scariest,

1:24:02 > 1:24:04and then I would say that his scariness is more like

1:24:04 > 1:24:07blunt and to the point, like, you can't even speak.

1:24:07 > 1:24:09And then I would say Karren is scary,

1:24:09 > 1:24:11because she just gives you this look,

1:24:11 > 1:24:14and it's like, "You're an idiot," and then Claude is scary,

1:24:14 > 1:24:17because he will call you out for your BS so quickly,

1:24:17 > 1:24:20and then you'll have your tail between your legs

1:24:20 > 1:24:21and you just won't know what to do.

1:24:21 > 1:24:24You got off to a good start with the interview with him, didn't you?

1:24:24 > 1:24:26You just said, why don't I tell you

1:24:26 > 1:24:28what your first question's going to be, and...

1:24:28 > 1:24:30I was just, like, so nervous at that point

1:24:30 > 1:24:32that I was just speaking too much,

1:24:32 > 1:24:37and I think I should have held back, maybe sat down and said hello.

1:24:37 > 1:24:40But at that point, I wanted to, basically, distract him

1:24:40 > 1:24:42a little bit from maybe the weak points of my business plan.

1:24:42 > 1:24:45Allyson, you advise businesses all over the world.

1:24:45 > 1:24:49Is what Karren and Claude do, is it easy or harder than it looks?

1:24:49 > 1:24:51I think it's a lot harder than it looks.

1:24:51 > 1:24:52You have to scrutinise the numbers,

1:24:52 > 1:24:55you have to make sure that market research has been done,

1:24:55 > 1:24:59that you can validate that there really is demand

1:24:59 > 1:25:00for these concepts,

1:25:00 > 1:25:03and you also have to watch how they behave in the tasks.

1:25:03 > 1:25:06Are they good team leaders? Is the role clear?

1:25:06 > 1:25:08Does the team perform well?

1:25:08 > 1:25:12So there are a lot of variables that you're watching simultaneously.

1:25:12 > 1:25:13I don't think it's easy.

1:25:13 > 1:25:18OK. Of course, it was Claude's debut as an aide in the show.

1:25:18 > 1:25:21- How do you think he did, Grace? - I love him.

1:25:21 > 1:25:22I think he's absolutely amazing.

1:25:22 > 1:25:25He just exudes this terrifying quality.

1:25:26 > 1:25:29So, Romesh, we saw you earlier in your spiritual home,

1:25:29 > 1:25:32otherwise known as The Loser Cafe. What happened next?

1:25:32 > 1:25:35Well, I'll choose to ignore your disrespect there, Jack.

1:25:35 > 1:25:38But, basically, I've heard so much about how daunting

1:25:38 > 1:25:41- the boardroom is, so I decided to give it a go for myself.- Right.

1:25:41 > 1:25:43Well, let's have a look at that.

1:25:43 > 1:25:44Let's get going, then.

1:25:45 > 1:25:49Why do you think I should let you remain in this process?

1:25:49 > 1:25:51I think I should remain in the process

1:25:51 > 1:25:53because I'm obviously the most talented candidate.

1:25:53 > 1:25:55I mean, I've always been an entrepreneur,

1:25:55 > 1:25:57starting from when I was four...

1:25:57 > 1:25:59When I was 15, yeah, I gave up on business

1:25:59 > 1:26:01and tried to go after girls.

1:26:01 > 1:26:03That didn't work out, so I went back to business...

1:26:03 > 1:26:05I sold a jam sandwich to a kid for 25 pence...

1:26:07 > 1:26:12It was about 36, 37, that I realised I didn't want to be a DJ any more,

1:26:12 > 1:26:15but unfortunately, I had changed my name legally to DJ Banganathan...

1:26:15 > 1:26:18- OK, look. I don't want to hear any more from you.- Can I just say...?

1:26:18 > 1:26:20I'm not asking for any comment.

1:26:23 > 1:26:27You come across as a very nice chap, but I have concluded...

1:26:29 > 1:26:30..that...

1:26:31 > 1:26:33..with regret, you're fired.

1:26:35 > 1:26:37Well, thank you very much for the opportunity, Lord Sugar,

1:26:37 > 1:26:39Karren, Claude.

1:26:48 > 1:26:50LAUGHTER

1:26:50 > 1:26:53APPLAUSE

1:26:53 > 1:26:55Now, it's time for another award,

1:26:55 > 1:26:57so let's have a look at who's in the running.

1:27:03 > 1:27:05And the nominations are...

1:27:05 > 1:27:09Richard, for his novel way of breaking the ice.

1:27:09 > 1:27:11Come with me and ice skate.

1:27:13 > 1:27:18Dan, for his never-take-no- for-an-answer attitude.

1:27:18 > 1:27:21Hello, are you interested in buying some salad?

1:27:21 > 1:27:23I don't suppose you'd be interested in buying it at all?

1:27:23 > 1:27:26- I haven't got my purse on me! - OK, no worries, no worries.

1:27:27 > 1:27:31Ruth, for her thoroughly hands-on approach.

1:27:31 > 1:27:34Gosh, aren't you solid? Ooh, aren't you lovely?

1:27:36 > 1:27:39And Brett, for really getting the bit between his teeth.

1:27:39 > 1:27:42It's not warm, but it's bite proof.

1:27:42 > 1:27:45LAUGHTER APPLAUSE

1:27:48 > 1:27:51- And, Allyson, would you please let us know who the winner is?- Yes.

1:27:51 > 1:27:53The winner is...

1:27:53 > 1:27:54Ruth.

1:27:54 > 1:27:57APPLAUSE

1:27:57 > 1:28:01- Sorry. Sorry again. Congratulations. - You look like a hungry gentleman.

1:28:01 > 1:28:02- Ooh, I tell you.- Check out the...

1:28:02 > 1:28:05- Fabulous. Aren't you lovely? - Check out the gun show.

1:28:05 > 1:28:06LAUGHTER

1:28:06 > 1:28:09- Thank you very much. - Sorry, mate. There we go.

1:28:09 > 1:28:13- Ruth, how do you feel? - Well, I feel incredible.

1:28:13 > 1:28:17I feel validated, in terms of the way that I behaved

1:28:17 > 1:28:19and the sales that I created.

1:28:19 > 1:28:22- Yeah.- It's for fishcakes, isn't it, not cat towers?

1:28:22 > 1:28:24- Yes.- Yeah.- Yeah.

1:28:24 > 1:28:26- OK. Great! I'm up for it.- OK.

1:28:26 > 1:28:30It's not been the best interview, Jack, but...

1:28:30 > 1:28:32Let's give it up for Ruth anyway. Thank you.

1:28:32 > 1:28:34APPLAUSE

1:28:39 > 1:28:41Vana, congratulations getting so far.

1:28:41 > 1:28:44You've really been a fantastic candidate on The Apprentice,

1:28:44 > 1:28:48and just like on You're Fired, no-one leaves Your Hired empty-handed.

1:28:48 > 1:28:51Now, I know you like the idea of some sort of puzzle which reveals the face

1:28:51 > 1:28:54of the person that you've been matched with as the game progresses.

1:28:54 > 1:28:57So, with that in mind, I've got you this.

1:28:57 > 1:29:00It's a Lord Sugar jigsaw puzzle. There you are.

1:29:00 > 1:29:03- What I've always wanted! Thank you! - That's for you to take away.

1:29:03 > 1:29:04Thank you very much, Vana.

1:29:04 > 1:29:07APPLAUSE

1:29:07 > 1:29:08And it's been great having you on this show.

1:29:08 > 1:29:10Let's have a look at your highlights.

1:29:10 > 1:29:12Just come take a look. There's no harm in that, right?

1:29:12 > 1:29:18Vana - so academic, so well spoken. Such a nice person.

1:29:18 > 1:29:20# Take a sip from my secret potion

1:29:20 > 1:29:22# I'll make you fall in love... #

1:29:22 > 1:29:24- Don't break them! - LAUGHTER

1:29:24 > 1:29:27You should check it out. Right over there, next to Ann Summers.

1:29:27 > 1:29:29LAUGHTER

1:29:29 > 1:29:33Vana, a very intelligent, switched-on, inspirational woman.

1:29:33 > 1:29:38And someone who has a great head on her shoulders, and a good person.

1:29:38 > 1:29:40She's a really good person.

1:29:40 > 1:29:42I need some help with the weeding. There's too many weeds.

1:29:42 > 1:29:45I think that a lot of single women have cats.

1:29:46 > 1:29:50We're literally doing everything we possibly can.

1:29:50 > 1:29:52SHE LAUGHS

1:29:52 > 1:29:54Ladies and gentlemen, Vana Koutsomitis!

1:30:23 > 1:30:24Thank you.

1:30:24 > 1:30:26Thank you, Lord Sugar. It means the world to me.

1:30:26 > 1:30:28Not going to let you down.

1:30:29 > 1:30:31- Congratulations. - Thank you very much.

1:30:48 > 1:30:50Oh, look at that!

1:30:53 > 1:30:57Standing...standing ovation. How about that, eh?

1:30:57 > 1:30:58Thank you very much.

1:30:58 > 1:31:01Listen, you know what, we've got a lot to get through tonight, Joseph,

1:31:01 > 1:31:04- so no toilet breaks, nothing, right? - We're good. No toilet breaks.

1:31:04 > 1:31:06Has it sunk in yet? You're hired.

1:31:06 > 1:31:09No, it's quite overwhelming, you know? It seems surreal.

1:31:09 > 1:31:11It's absolutely incredible.

1:31:11 > 1:31:14Lord Sugar's my inspiration and to be sitting here

1:31:14 > 1:31:16as his business partner is amazing.

1:31:16 > 1:31:20And also, since day one, you seem to have really enjoyed yourself,

1:31:20 > 1:31:23I thought. Do you think you would have got a lot out of it

1:31:23 > 1:31:25even if you hadn't won, you'd be saying the same thing?

1:31:25 > 1:31:29Yeah, I mean, every task is a mini business masterclass.

1:31:29 > 1:31:32You know, you get to meet so many different people, and work

1:31:32 > 1:31:35with everybody, and you're chucked into so many crazy environments.

1:31:35 > 1:31:38It's just fantastic. Absolutely amazing experience.

1:31:38 > 1:31:39Well, congratulations.

1:32:07 > 1:32:10As you said, this is a bit of a new area for you.

1:32:10 > 1:32:14- Are you excited about branching out? - Very much so, yes. Very much so.

1:32:14 > 1:32:17And I'm also excited for Joseph,

1:32:17 > 1:32:20because he is a glowing example

1:32:20 > 1:32:23of the reason that I do this Apprentice process.

1:32:23 > 1:32:26At the end of the day, what's good about this process,

1:32:26 > 1:32:30and in this particular series is, you've got Joseph here

1:32:30 > 1:32:33as a great example of what is possible.

1:32:33 > 1:32:39He is a self-confessed naughty boy in his early days, as a young chap.

1:32:39 > 1:32:41He got himself into a little bit of hot water.

1:32:41 > 1:32:44Fortunately, not that serious hot water.

1:32:44 > 1:32:47Turned his life around, decided he was going to go to work,

1:32:47 > 1:32:51and here he is today, the well-deserved winner of

1:32:51 > 1:32:54The Apprentice, and I look forward to him being my business partner,

1:32:54 > 1:32:56and I'm going to give him a lot of coaching,

1:32:56 > 1:33:00but I hope it inspires a lot of people looking in

1:33:00 > 1:33:03to see what is possible in this world.

1:33:03 > 1:33:05Two very strong finalists you ended up with.

1:33:05 > 1:33:08But only one can win, sadly. Any advice for Vana?

1:33:08 > 1:33:13Well, Vana, as everybody has seen, is a highly intelligent young lady,

1:33:13 > 1:33:18and she's got this dating application idea.

1:33:18 > 1:33:20I'm sure that it might have legs.

1:33:20 > 1:33:24And... But it does need a tremendous amount of investment.

1:33:24 > 1:33:29This process is all about £250,000. That's your lot.

1:33:29 > 1:33:33In the business it goes, and get on with it.

1:33:33 > 1:33:36And I think the main decision here was that

1:33:36 > 1:33:40we couldn't do it on the 250,000.

1:33:40 > 1:33:44OK. Well, let's have a look at how Joseph ended up the winner.

1:33:44 > 1:33:48Joseph, you have a small-time plumbing business at the moment.

1:33:48 > 1:33:52You're going to have to explain how you're going to grow that to

1:33:52 > 1:33:55make it into a substantial company.

1:33:55 > 1:33:59What I aim to do is to expand the business,

1:33:59 > 1:34:01moving into renewable technologies.

1:34:01 > 1:34:02With the renewable technology,

1:34:02 > 1:34:06it's not something that's taking off in the next five years or so.

1:34:06 > 1:34:08I'm more interested in smart technology.

1:34:08 > 1:34:10If I've got a water pump that has four pumps,

1:34:10 > 1:34:13and one is breaking down, I want to know that. I'm not on site.

1:34:13 > 1:34:18Please let me introduce you to PrimeTime Plumbers.

1:34:18 > 1:34:21Well, you know you can get the app from PrimeTime Plumbers, which

1:34:21 > 1:34:24enables you to be able to control all your heating from your phone.

1:34:24 > 1:34:26Lord Sugar, I once read a book that changed my life.

1:34:26 > 1:34:29The title of the book was What You See Is What You Get.

1:34:29 > 1:34:32I'm now sat in front of the author of that book,

1:34:32 > 1:34:35and what I'm saying to you is, what you see is what you get.

1:34:37 > 1:34:40APPLAUSE

1:34:40 > 1:34:45So, Joseph, you read Lord Sugar's book.

1:34:45 > 1:34:47Was that literally your light bulb moment,

1:34:47 > 1:34:50- or whatever the plumbing equivalent of that is?- Literally, yeah.

1:34:50 > 1:34:52Was that your U-bend moment, was it?

1:34:52 > 1:34:55It was like someone flicked the switch, you know?

1:34:55 > 1:34:58My lovely mother over there bought me it for Christmas,

1:34:58 > 1:35:01and I read it solid for literally three weeks,

1:35:01 > 1:35:04and I was so inspired by that book, just to see what Lord Sugar's

1:35:04 > 1:35:07journey was, from nothing to what he managed to achieve.

1:35:07 > 1:35:11You know, I literally quit my job within, like, three weeks,

1:35:11 > 1:35:14took out a 15 grand personal loan, started a business,

1:35:14 > 1:35:19bought a van, branded it, and then just blew up from there.

1:35:19 > 1:35:21Let's move on to your business plan pitch.

1:35:21 > 1:35:23Because I think on day one, you were faffing about a bit,

1:35:23 > 1:35:26you were wasting time talking about the name,

1:35:26 > 1:35:29thinking of calling it things like... was it Enerplutuer?

1:35:30 > 1:35:32And it didn't seem to be going anywhere.

1:35:32 > 1:35:35But day two, you just hit the ground running. You used the focus group.

1:35:35 > 1:35:39The pitch was amazing. What are your memories of doing that?

1:35:39 > 1:35:41Yeah, we spent a lot of time thinking of a new name,

1:35:41 > 1:35:43and trying to brand it,

1:35:43 > 1:35:45and I probably did mess about a little bit rather than

1:35:45 > 1:35:48looking at how I was going to grow the business and present it,

1:35:48 > 1:35:50but I did want to get that right.

1:35:50 > 1:35:52You know, my mind was a little bit clouded, but now, looking back,

1:35:52 > 1:35:55I could probably have moved on a little bit quicker,

1:35:55 > 1:35:57but at the same time, you want to take the right logo

1:35:57 > 1:36:00and the right name when you're presenting something, you know?

1:36:00 > 1:36:03I mean, Lord Sugar, the original plan was for a franchise operation,

1:36:03 > 1:36:06wasn't it? And then Joseph adapted it,

1:36:06 > 1:36:10and he started to focus in on the smart technology.

1:36:10 > 1:36:14But is that what you're looking for, someone who can adapt and change?

1:36:14 > 1:36:18Yeah, the franchise thing was a little bit difficult,

1:36:18 > 1:36:21put it that way, and that he should concentrate on

1:36:21 > 1:36:23building the business up first of all,

1:36:23 > 1:36:25because you can't franchise something

1:36:25 > 1:36:29unless you've got some renowned, successful business out there

1:36:29 > 1:36:32for someone else to become a franchisee.

1:36:32 > 1:36:34I mean, Allyson, Joseph, as we saw,

1:36:34 > 1:36:38he used the focus group to mould his business, actually.

1:36:38 > 1:36:41How important are focus groups in the real world,

1:36:41 > 1:36:42and are they always right?

1:36:42 > 1:36:44So, they are very important.

1:36:44 > 1:36:47They are as right as you want them to be,

1:36:47 > 1:36:50and what I mean by that is, you've got to listen.

1:36:50 > 1:36:52And you have to listen through a certain lens

1:36:52 > 1:36:54or through a certain filter

1:36:54 > 1:36:57about whether you think that the people that have been

1:36:57 > 1:36:59recruited truly reflect the marketplace.

1:36:59 > 1:37:01But it's a listening exercise.

1:37:01 > 1:37:05I would never advise a company to just launch a product or service

1:37:05 > 1:37:08without surveying, is there demand,

1:37:08 > 1:37:11what does it look like, what shape does it take?

1:37:11 > 1:37:13It's critically important that you do that.

1:37:13 > 1:37:18Because, Grace, we saw Joseph here getting the focus group to

1:37:18 > 1:37:22film testimonials for Joseph. He was asking for business cards.

1:37:22 > 1:37:25In your world, you must see a lot of schmoozing and networking.

1:37:25 > 1:37:27- Has he got the moves? - He's pretty good, though, yeah.

1:37:27 > 1:37:30- He's very good at it.- I think he could teach media people something.

1:37:30 > 1:37:32- Yeah, you were very good.- Thank you.

1:37:32 > 1:37:35I think you could be a little bit heavy-handed, but it gets results.

1:37:35 > 1:37:38You got all those cards. I wouldn't have done that.

1:37:38 > 1:37:43- So, Lord Sugar, you gave Joseph the nickname Valentino.- Yeah.

1:37:43 > 1:37:47- Do you find him generally charming to deal with?- I don't know yet!

1:37:48 > 1:37:50I am, of course, as you know!

1:37:50 > 1:37:52LAUGHTER

1:37:52 > 1:37:57Well, charm is one thing. It helps if you've got the look as well.

1:37:57 > 1:38:00No disrespect, but did you smarten yourself up a little bit,

1:38:00 > 1:38:03or did you still look like a plumber with a moustache, like Super Mario?

1:38:05 > 1:38:07# Uh-huh, uh-huh

1:38:07 > 1:38:09# And all the girlies say I'm pretty fly... #

1:38:09 > 1:38:10Good morning, Joseph speaking.

1:38:10 > 1:38:12# For a white guy. #

1:38:12 > 1:38:15I would have assumed that you, Valentino, would have gone

1:38:15 > 1:38:19after the mirror, because you spend most of your time looking in there.

1:38:22 > 1:38:25# Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, cinco, seis. #

1:38:26 > 1:38:29- Does this look all right, or does it look stupid?- Looks stupid.

1:38:29 > 1:38:31Does it? SHE LAUGHS

1:38:31 > 1:38:33# Give it to me, baby... #

1:38:33 > 1:38:35AARGH!

1:38:35 > 1:38:37Don't grow it back.

1:38:37 > 1:38:40- Are you really Joseph? - Am I really Joseph? Yes.

1:38:41 > 1:38:43Oh! The new and improved Joseph.

1:38:45 > 1:38:47So, the moustache has gone. Has it gone for ever?

1:38:47 > 1:38:49- Are you going to grow it back? - It's gone for ever.

1:38:49 > 1:38:51- Gone for ever.- It's not coming back.

1:38:51 > 1:38:55Was that part of your game plan, to do it at the interview stage, to...?

1:38:55 > 1:38:57I think it was an iconic moment, you know?

1:38:57 > 1:38:58The moustache made me stand out,

1:38:58 > 1:39:02and when I shaved it off, it was for a reason.

1:39:02 > 1:39:04You know, I wanted to show them

1:39:04 > 1:39:06that I'd taken the feedback on board,

1:39:06 > 1:39:09and in certain situations, you can be judged by what you look like,

1:39:09 > 1:39:12and I did look a little bit second-hand car salesman-like,

1:39:12 > 1:39:14- and... - A little bit(!)

1:39:14 > 1:39:16LAUGHTER

1:39:16 > 1:39:18I think I look a hell of a lot smarter without it.

1:39:18 > 1:39:20You look like Walker off Dad's Army most of the time.

1:39:20 > 1:39:22Actually, let's put it to the audience.

1:39:22 > 1:39:25I'll tell you what - have you got your cards?

1:39:25 > 1:39:28If you think Joseph was right to shave off his moustache,

1:39:28 > 1:39:29hold up "Hired".

1:39:29 > 1:39:31If you think he was wrong, hold up "Fired".

1:39:34 > 1:39:37And, obviously, I think that's fairly conclusive

1:39:37 > 1:39:40that they think you looked ridiculous for the first 10 weeks.

1:39:40 > 1:39:41LAUGHTER

1:39:41 > 1:39:44So, Joseph, I understand you've got your family here tonight.

1:39:44 > 1:39:48- I've got my mum Jane and my sister Ciara.- Hello, Mum and sister.

1:39:48 > 1:39:51Yeah, so you must be very proud of Joseph, aren't you?

1:39:51 > 1:39:55- Extremely proud. I can't even begin to explain.- No, I'm sure.

1:39:55 > 1:39:56What was he like as a little boy?

1:39:56 > 1:39:59I reckon he was a cheeky little bugger, was he?

1:39:59 > 1:40:02- He was, very much so, yes. - What did he get up to?

1:40:02 > 1:40:05Full of life, always up to something.

1:40:05 > 1:40:07Bossing his friends around.

1:40:07 > 1:40:09Yes, just on the go from the minute he got up in the morning

1:40:09 > 1:40:13- till he went to bed.- And what does Joseph's sister have to say about it?

1:40:13 > 1:40:16Yeah, he was very, very cheeky. Very bossy.

1:40:16 > 1:40:19But we always knew he was going to do well.

1:40:19 > 1:40:22- He's always done really well. - Are you glad the moustache has gone?

1:40:22 > 1:40:23I am.

1:40:23 > 1:40:28It's lovely to have you here. Let's hear it for Joseph's mum and sister.

1:40:30 > 1:40:35Now, Karren said at one point that you picked your team

1:40:35 > 1:40:38for the final task by who you liked

1:40:38 > 1:40:41rather than who was going to be most helpful. Do you agree with that?

1:40:41 > 1:40:45Um, I agree that I like them, they're a fantastic bunch.

1:40:45 > 1:40:48But I picked them because Gary is fantastic at pitching

1:40:48 > 1:40:50and he taught me a lot.

1:40:50 > 1:40:52Brett is in the plumbing and heating industry

1:40:52 > 1:40:54so it was great to have another expert on the team.

1:40:54 > 1:40:57Mergim and Elle, you're just fantastic.

1:40:57 > 1:40:58LAUGHTER

1:40:58 > 1:41:01- Well, I know...- Cheers, J!

1:41:01 > 1:41:03How are you all doing? Did you enjoy your...?

1:41:03 > 1:41:05We loved your acting debut.

1:41:05 > 1:41:07- If I cue you in, Mergim? - Yeah?

1:41:07 > 1:41:09Mergim, the fire isn't working.

1:41:09 > 1:41:11- WOODENLY:- Neither is the bath.

1:41:11 > 1:41:13LAUGHTER

1:41:13 > 1:41:18It's beautiful, it's right from there, isn't it, with you?

1:41:18 > 1:41:22Lord Sugar, I think we all enjoyed watching Mergim for various reasons.

1:41:22 > 1:41:25But you were very impressed by him, weren't you?

1:41:25 > 1:41:28Yeah, look, he's a great character,

1:41:28 > 1:41:31and what I like about this series

1:41:31 > 1:41:34is what I've already explained about Joseph and where he came from.

1:41:34 > 1:41:38Mergim also comes from a very difficult background.

1:41:38 > 1:41:44He was a refugee, came to this country a long time ago

1:41:44 > 1:41:48and I believe that as a young man ended up having to

1:41:48 > 1:41:53take over his family and look after all of his family and siblings.

1:41:53 > 1:41:57He had about five or six jobs at any one time.

1:41:57 > 1:42:00It's an amazing thing what he's done.

1:42:00 > 1:42:04He came on to the process, I think, a little bit early. OK?

1:42:04 > 1:42:07So, you know, apply again...

1:42:09 > 1:42:11..in 12 years.

1:42:11 > 1:42:13LAUGHTER

1:42:13 > 1:42:16- You won't be alive by then, probably.- I won't?

1:42:16 > 1:42:19AUDIENCE GROAN

1:42:22 > 1:42:24There's Mergim for you, you see.

1:42:27 > 1:42:31It was the infamous handyman task in week six, where Mergim showed us

1:42:31 > 1:42:33his deftness with a screwdriver.

1:42:33 > 1:42:35But you really came into your own in that task

1:42:35 > 1:42:38cos you were in your comfort zone, you knew what you were doing.

1:42:38 > 1:42:41Did you feel that was like a turning point for you?

1:42:41 > 1:42:42It was a massive turning point.

1:42:42 > 1:42:45I think after that, people started taking me seriously

1:42:45 > 1:42:49and I showed what I'm all about, that I know the business

1:42:49 > 1:42:50and I can take control of a situation.

1:42:50 > 1:42:53You know, it was great to get immunity from Lord Sugar.

1:42:53 > 1:42:57- That was an amazing feeling.- That was an amazing moment, wasn't it?

1:42:57 > 1:42:59Grace, what did you make of that task?

1:42:59 > 1:43:02That was one of my favourite parts of the whole series.

1:43:02 > 1:43:05Watching Mergim going into places and take the value off properties.

1:43:05 > 1:43:09It was quite comforting to know that somebody

1:43:09 > 1:43:12is as useless as I am at doing any kind of DIY,

1:43:12 > 1:43:15but I wouldn't try and set up a business doing it.

1:43:15 > 1:43:20- It was wonderful to watch.- It was. Romesh, what did you make of it?

1:43:20 > 1:43:24I thought, Joseph, you were exceptional in that task.

1:43:24 > 1:43:29Obviously you're doing a task that fits into what you know,

1:43:29 > 1:43:33but actually, the way you took that task by the scruff of the neck

1:43:33 > 1:43:36and basically led that team, I thought was impressive.

1:43:36 > 1:43:39I was guilty as a viewer of misjudging you

1:43:39 > 1:43:41because early on you seemed like a nice guy,

1:43:41 > 1:43:44but I didn't really see those strengths in you.

1:43:44 > 1:43:47Then suddenly, with that task, it was an eye-opener,

1:43:47 > 1:43:49- you were very impressive. It was amazing.- Thank you.

1:43:49 > 1:43:52Joseph, your performance in the handyman task

1:43:52 > 1:43:55obviously gave you confidence, not that you really needed it.

1:43:55 > 1:43:57Have a look at this.

1:43:58 > 1:44:02Joseph has a lot of confidence, you can even see it in his walk.

1:44:02 > 1:44:05# Walk this way, talk this way

1:44:05 > 1:44:09# Walk this way, talk this way

1:44:09 > 1:44:12# She told me to walk this way

1:44:12 > 1:44:15# Talk this way Just give me a kiss... #

1:44:18 > 1:44:21Is that something you've always done, walk like that?

1:44:21 > 1:44:24- It looks like you're in a Tarantino movie.- That's my Apprentice walk.

1:44:24 > 1:44:25It wasn't all plain sailing, though.

1:44:25 > 1:44:29One of my favourite moments was when you had to deliver the good news

1:44:29 > 1:44:31about the market research on the health snack task.

1:44:31 > 1:44:33Let's have a look at that.

1:44:33 > 1:44:35'What feedback have you had?'

1:44:35 > 1:44:37They weren't really too keen on the taste

1:44:37 > 1:44:40'and then the texture they didn't like at all.'

1:44:40 > 1:44:42'I want you to talk about feedback,'

1:44:42 > 1:44:44but I want you to talk about it

1:44:44 > 1:44:45in a very positive way.

1:44:45 > 1:44:47Yeah, I mean...

1:44:47 > 1:44:50'No negativity, stand by what we're saying, back it up 100%.'

1:44:50 > 1:44:51See you soon.

1:44:54 > 1:44:56Joseph, I know you've been out

1:44:56 > 1:44:58tasting it with the consumers this morning.

1:44:58 > 1:45:01We'd like you to share the feedback that we've got.

1:45:01 > 1:45:03Um...

1:45:04 > 1:45:06Um...

1:45:06 > 1:45:10So, basically, to start with, they thought the product was amazing.

1:45:12 > 1:45:15APPLAUSE

1:45:16 > 1:45:20I just... I love Karren's expression at that point.

1:45:20 > 1:45:24She's saying, "Amazing? As in amazing no-one threw up on the pavement?"

1:45:24 > 1:45:27No, you can't hide anything from Karren.

1:45:27 > 1:45:30But Gary dropped you right in it, there, didn't he, really?

1:45:30 > 1:45:33- Sorry, mate. - Lord Sugar, that's a good point.

1:45:33 > 1:45:35You've talked a lot about supporting the product,

1:45:35 > 1:45:37and Joseph certainly did do that.

1:45:37 > 1:45:40He did, he sailed a little bit close to the wind

1:45:40 > 1:45:43as far as the truth was concerned.

1:45:43 > 1:45:46But to give him credit, you saw him hesitate a couple of times,

1:45:46 > 1:45:48which showed his honesty, really,

1:45:48 > 1:45:51as if to say, "Oh, my God, I've got to lie here."

1:45:51 > 1:45:54But the thing is, you've got to find some positive things to say.

1:45:54 > 1:45:57I think earlier in the process, we saw some candidates who,

1:45:57 > 1:46:01halfway through, kind of gave up on the product.

1:46:01 > 1:46:03You can't afford to give up on your product.

1:46:03 > 1:46:06I mean, that's what you've got, that's what you've got to sell,

1:46:06 > 1:46:09that's what you decided to do, get on with it.

1:46:09 > 1:46:12You've got to get on with it. It's not a good thing
