0:04:07 > 0:04:08Any kind of maths,
0:04:08 > 0:04:11any kind of numbers, he'll always get them spot-on.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14For me, obviously my maths is a good way to showcase
0:04:14 > 0:04:15that I have intelligence
0:04:15 > 0:04:17or something that I'm good at, so yeah,
0:04:17 > 0:04:19it's a party trick, I suppose.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21He's a numbers man. He absolutely gets the figures.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24He knows the margins, he understands the costings.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27I've worked out the costings on 10%.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29- This is the most expensive of the three?- Yeah.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33And that makes him an absolutely vital part of any team.
0:04:37 > 0:04:43But when Tom's in charge, it's not just the numbers that add up.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45Tom absolutely understands the importance of strategy
0:04:45 > 0:04:48and I find that really impressive about him.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51Running his team sourcing second-hand goods
0:04:51 > 0:04:54to re-sell in trendy East London,
0:04:54 > 0:04:56Tom was the man with the plan.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Realistically, how many items are we going to sell?
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Maybe 50-70 items would be a good target.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04I said I don't think we'll be able to sell more that £1,300 worth
0:05:04 > 0:05:06of stuff, £1,500 worth at a push,
0:05:06 > 0:05:08so I worked backwards from there -
0:05:08 > 0:05:11if we're only selling that much, we only want to be spending
0:05:11 > 0:05:14£200-300 cos we want to be making £1,000 profit.
0:05:14 > 0:05:19Tom's sort of strategy or briefing to us really was to give us £200,
0:05:19 > 0:05:21tell us not to spend it...
0:05:21 > 0:05:24You know, over the course of the couple of days
0:05:24 > 0:05:27I did find out that people weren't completely behind it
0:05:27 > 0:05:29in the way that I'd have liked them to be.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31We're good negotiators and sales people, not miracle workers.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35But, you know, I ended up getting proved right which is the most
0:05:35 > 0:05:37important thing at the end of the day.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41Was you given free reign on how much you could spend?
0:05:41 > 0:05:43I gave them £200 to go out with initially.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45You didn't want them to get carried away?
0:05:45 > 0:05:47Yeah, and we also had the whole of day two.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50Damage limitation or what? They can only blow 200 quid.
0:05:51 > 0:05:56He works out where he wants to get to and how he's going to do it,
0:05:56 > 0:05:58rather than rushing around in a mad spin
0:05:58 > 0:06:00like some sort of drunken sailor.
0:06:00 > 0:06:05You came in with £1,063 profit, playing £783 so that's
0:06:05 > 0:06:10very good and it looks like your stinginess paid off here.
0:06:11 > 0:06:12At the age of ten,
0:06:12 > 0:06:16Tom was introduced to the fine wine business by his dad.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Our road trips to Burgundy used to start
0:06:20 > 0:06:23in the early hours of the morning.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26We'd head off in a van at five in the morning.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28It was a good thing, at least I went back to school and was like,
0:06:28 > 0:06:33"You won't believe what I was doing last week." It's a nice thing to show off about.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35It launched a love affair with wine that's put Tom at the top
0:06:35 > 0:06:40of a London-based multi-million pound business.
0:06:40 > 0:06:41Erm, what do I love about wine?
0:06:41 > 0:06:43I love all the aspects.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46I love the technical aspects of it. I like the romance about it.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48I love the fact it brings people together.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50I love that people are passionate about it.
0:06:50 > 0:06:51And do you know what? It's a global product.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53Everyone in the world loves wine.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57Three years ago, aged just 20,
0:06:57 > 0:07:00Tom took over the family wine-broking business.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04Yeah, it's good working with my dad.
0:07:04 > 0:07:07I'd say that I learnt a lot in term's of having confidence
0:07:07 > 0:07:09to run my own business.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12He's been that guiding hand that's really helped me build my,
0:07:12 > 0:07:15you know, business acumen and be the person I am today.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17So yeah, I'd say he's been a massive help.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20He's transformed the company into a firm
0:07:20 > 0:07:24with 350 clients in 21 countries.
0:07:24 > 0:07:29I think it's fair to say that Tom and I have got a fairly good father and son bond.
0:07:31 > 0:07:32And to be honest I'm surprised
0:07:32 > 0:07:35and delighted that he enjoys working with me.
0:07:37 > 0:07:39When people first meet Tom they think that it's all been
0:07:39 > 0:07:43handed to him on a plate, when actually all his hard work
0:07:43 > 0:07:48and all his dedication and all the long hours is what drives
0:07:48 > 0:07:50the business, not that it's just been handed to him.
0:07:52 > 0:07:57Tom's drive to win emerged at school, especially in sport.
0:07:57 > 0:07:59When I was younger at school,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02the academic side actually came quite easily to me,
0:08:02 > 0:08:05but really what I drove hard and put all my effort in was actually
0:08:05 > 0:08:06on the sports field.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09You know, I wanted to be in the football team.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11I wanted to be playing golf, I wanted to be playing tennis,
0:08:11 > 0:08:14I wanted to be involved in all those sports and perform
0:08:14 > 0:08:18at the highest level and that's where I really drove myself hard.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Tom's very competitive.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23If he was playing a match with anyone and it wasn't going well
0:08:23 > 0:08:24and he became frustrated,
0:08:24 > 0:08:27he would often throw his racket across the court.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30I think I'm very much like, there, there, there, there
0:08:30 > 0:08:32and as it doesn't go my way I'm like, bang, straight up.
0:08:32 > 0:08:34And just reaction, but I think it's quite short and sharp
0:08:34 > 0:08:36and I can recover from it.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Tom's really fun.
0:08:40 > 0:08:44When he's not working, he's out partying with his friends.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47He loves good wine, good food.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51Tom has a very interesting fashion sense.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54I think he's quite vain when it comes to how he looks.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57Tom is actually addicted to his hair.
0:08:57 > 0:09:01He has different styles. It might be today I'm Tom with a quiff.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04Sometimes it's Tom with a side-parting, and yeah,
0:09:04 > 0:09:05he loves his hair.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09On one had he's a very intellectual young man, very knowledgeable.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12I'm still getting this kind of creamy, vanilla note which
0:09:12 > 0:09:15- might be the French oak that it's obviously matured in barrel...- Yes.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17..but I think it's delightful.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21And on the other, he's half a playboy, half a gambler.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27In the task for week eight...
0:09:27 > 0:09:32You're going to organise the sale of urban art tomorrow night
0:09:32 > 0:09:35in two of London's cutting edge galleries.
0:09:35 > 0:09:39Both sides of Tom were on display.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41- Hi there, how are you? - How you doing, you all right?
0:09:41 > 0:09:43I'm good. It's lovely to meet you. It's Laura.
0:09:43 > 0:09:46As project manager Tom had to convince the artists his team
0:09:46 > 0:09:48should sell THEIR paintings.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53What attracts me to street art, and I have a few bits in my house,
0:09:53 > 0:09:56is traditional kind of street art, spray paints...
0:09:56 > 0:10:00Negotiating with the artist known as Pure Evil,
0:10:00 > 0:10:02he suddenly emerged as an art buff.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04Myself, I'm a big fan of obviously Space Invader from France.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06He's absolutely excellent.
0:10:06 > 0:10:07Banksy...
0:10:07 > 0:10:10So when you went to California, who did you take inspiration from?
0:10:10 > 0:10:13Cos obviously you have people like Shepard Fairey on the West Coast
0:10:13 > 0:10:16with his Andre The Giant "Obey" which has become huge.
0:10:16 > 0:10:17It's absolutely mammoth.
0:10:17 > 0:10:20Right...see you later.
0:10:20 > 0:10:26But when the artist was unimpressed, Mr Cool started to melt.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28I'm just giving you a call really just to see
0:10:28 > 0:10:30what your thoughts are on exhibiting with us.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Well, I think I'm going to go with Sterling.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37That's really disappointing.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40Really disappointing.
0:10:42 > 0:10:46When things go wrong or Tom doesn't get what he wants, I often look
0:10:46 > 0:10:49at him and think, "Do you have the maturity to really deal with that?"
0:10:55 > 0:10:57SIGHING: Frustrating.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00I had a strategy and it didn't pay off.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04It kind of threw me into a bit of a spin and I had about
0:11:04 > 0:11:07a ten-minute period where I thought the world was just caving in on me.
0:11:08 > 0:11:12If things don't go his way, he spits the dummy. He can be a baby sometimes.
0:11:12 > 0:11:13And that's what lets him down.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15He shows his age sometimes in these tasks.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20Backed against the wall, Tom raised the stakes.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24The biggest gamble Tom has taken was in the art task.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26It's a no-win situation for us cos we've lost Pure Evil,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28so I'm going to go for broke.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31I'm going to go for James Jessop.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33If we just sell one of his pieces, get the right sort of person down,
0:11:33 > 0:11:36the right collector, we can win it.
0:11:36 > 0:11:37At £10,000,
0:11:37 > 0:11:42the sale of just one Jessop would give Tom victory.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45I'm 100% a risk-taker. I've always been like that.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47I do like to gamble here and again
0:11:47 > 0:11:48and I think that you've got to do that.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51As soon as I walked in that was the one that caught my eye,
0:11:51 > 0:11:52with the green monster.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55The prices at the moment are headline prices but obviously
0:11:55 > 0:11:57there's room for negotiation if you took more than one piece.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00It didn't pay off, but I think Alan was impressed
0:12:00 > 0:12:03that this young man could take that big a risk.
0:12:03 > 0:12:04Nice to meet you, Tom.
0:12:04 > 0:12:06- Cheers, Tom.- OK, nice.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09- You took a gamble. - I did, yeah.
0:12:09 > 0:12:10I've done things like that.
0:12:10 > 0:12:15There's nothing wrong with that cos if they work, you know, then you're home and dry.
0:12:15 > 0:12:16Yep.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19If you take a risk and it goes wrong you've got to be accountable for it,
0:12:19 > 0:12:22take responsibility for it, and I have done that.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25I think every time I've been project manager I've taken a risky strategy,
0:12:25 > 0:12:26I've taken big decisions.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29He's great at strategy, fantastic at figures,
0:12:29 > 0:12:31and he's very knowledgeable.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34Therefore the other candidates, I think they like him,
0:12:34 > 0:12:35I think they admire him
0:12:35 > 0:12:38and I think secretly they REALLY think he's the one to beat.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42Oh, my God, I love it!
0:12:42 > 0:12:44Jade Nash.
0:12:44 > 0:12:45Creative.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51Passionate.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54This is actually the best sub-team I've been in.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Persuasive.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58I hope you enjoy that, Rory.
0:13:01 > 0:13:06Aged 29, business development manager Jade has revealed hidden talents.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09Jade's creativity puts her right at the centre of product development
0:13:09 > 0:13:11and it doesn't actually matter
0:13:11 > 0:13:14whether it's clothing or whether it's a promotional video.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16We're going to do the introduction with you.
0:13:16 > 0:13:19That's fine, that's on his own and these guys behind him.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21And everyone quiet...go.
0:13:21 > 0:13:26She adds something to everything in terms of creativity.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30We're thinking to have in front of that possibly some kind of ribbon,
0:13:30 > 0:13:32so on here we'd need to have ESW.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35In task one it was a strange situation.
0:13:35 > 0:13:39It was full of loads of loud women.
0:13:39 > 0:13:41You are wasting time! I know how to do this.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44You should go, you're wasting time!
0:13:44 > 0:13:45- So just go.- That's not the point.
0:13:45 > 0:13:50And I really shone cos I did that little design that went on all
0:13:50 > 0:13:52the bibs and the T-shirts and everyone loved them.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54What, is it your own graphic?
0:13:54 > 0:13:56- Our design, yeah. We didn't... - That's very good!- It's very good.
0:13:58 > 0:14:03In week five each team had to invent a keep-fit regime
0:14:03 > 0:14:05and pitch it to health clubs.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08And where's the money? Well, I'll tell you where the money is.
0:14:08 > 0:14:12You are going to go and try and license your new fitness trend
0:14:12 > 0:14:16to some of the country's leading health club chains.
0:14:16 > 0:14:20Jade still as video director turned kitsch into cash.
0:14:23 > 0:14:26Jade was put in charge of creating the fitness video. It wasn't easy.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29I was involved in the directing for The Groove Train.
0:14:29 > 0:14:32It was great fun and technically at the end it looked great
0:14:32 > 0:14:35so I was really proud of that.
0:14:35 > 0:14:39The end result was incredibly impressive and it won them the task.
0:14:39 > 0:14:42Team Phoenix, you seem to have pulled it off.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53I grew up in Wiltshire
0:14:53 > 0:14:56when I was younger and I was there until I was 18.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58And we had a great life, to be honest.
0:15:00 > 0:15:02Growing up on her dad's caravan site,
0:15:02 > 0:15:06Jade quickly learned how to mix with people.
0:15:06 > 0:15:11I was always the child at school that was taller than everyone,
0:15:11 > 0:15:15really loud, and I think probably scared people cos I was so confident.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19I've been like this since I was about six years old.
0:15:19 > 0:15:23Jade was always a confident little girl, always full-on, in your face.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27She was like it as a youngster and she still is like it today.
0:15:27 > 0:15:29She comes in, directs everything.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31Walk in the door, this is how it's going to be,
0:15:31 > 0:15:35this is what we're going to do today and just organises everybody.
0:15:35 > 0:15:40She's a whirling dervish, she just keeps going 24/7.
0:15:40 > 0:15:41Whatever she takes up,
0:15:41 > 0:15:46whatever profession she does, she puts 110% into it.
0:15:47 > 0:15:51The caravan park gave Jade her first taste of work.
0:15:51 > 0:15:54On the campsite I used to work in the shop taking money,
0:15:54 > 0:15:58to cleaning out the toilet blocks for my mum and dad, but I think it all added
0:15:58 > 0:16:02to the experience and it meant that I was just so out going and really
0:16:02 > 0:16:05had to be confident in talking to anyone that I met.
0:16:07 > 0:16:12Looking after guests turned out to be ideal training for her first real job.
0:16:14 > 0:16:18I think when I was a club rep it really showed me how resilient I was.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21We'd be working from 8 in the morning till 8 the next morning
0:16:21 > 0:16:24always having to be upbeat, being able to relate to
0:16:24 > 0:16:27so many people, quiet people, loud people.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30At the same time always being enthusiastic, so it taught me
0:16:30 > 0:16:33a lot of skills that I've taken through business.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36Jade is now a top sales person
0:16:36 > 0:16:39and a top earner in a direct marketing company.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42As soon as Jade went out to work,
0:16:42 > 0:16:46I think she realised that she didn't want to just be like everyone else,
0:16:46 > 0:16:49she really, really wanted to succeed.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52I think the reason why money is so important to me is
0:16:52 > 0:16:55because my dad came from pretty much having nothing
0:16:55 > 0:16:59and he built his own business up so I think that pretty much inspires me.
0:17:03 > 0:17:06'Good afternoon, Lord Sugar would like you to meet him at
0:17:06 > 0:17:07'a wholesale warehouse in Essex.'
0:17:07 > 0:17:12But in week seven, stepping up to run a team for the first time,
0:17:12 > 0:17:15Jade's business skills deserted her.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18On the Flip It task, Jade just missed the point.
0:17:18 > 0:17:22Now, this is very similar to the environment where
0:17:22 > 0:17:25I started my business and that is really what this task is all about,
0:17:25 > 0:17:28you starting a business from scratch.
0:17:28 > 0:17:34The teams had to buy stock, sell it, then reinvest in what sold best.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36If you can out these through, I'm going to split...
0:17:36 > 0:17:38Jade really didn't get the Flip It task.
0:17:38 > 0:17:42I don't know what went wrong for her because she is a business woman,
0:17:42 > 0:17:46but the margins were all over the place, logistics...
0:17:46 > 0:17:48all over the place.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50She just lost it.
0:17:50 > 0:17:54- Hi, guys.- How's it going? - 'We're thinking about putting a lot of our eggs in one basket.'
0:17:54 > 0:17:56The insects, there's a great margin on them,
0:17:56 > 0:17:58we're buying them for 60p, selling them for £2-3 each.
0:17:58 > 0:18:00I think it's good to have a few different things in the stall
0:18:00 > 0:18:03cos if you don't like insects you can sell them the other things.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06Just to let you know what we've got, we've got 21 MP3 players,
0:18:06 > 0:18:10we've got 60 of the insects, and we've got 15 chargers.
0:18:12 > 0:18:15As I was doing the numbers what I was realising was
0:18:15 > 0:18:17let's focus on one or two products,
0:18:17 > 0:18:20we're tripling the margin and that's what we should do,
0:18:20 > 0:18:22but instead Jade wanted to keep it varied
0:18:22 > 0:18:24and too many products and that's where we probably lost it.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27- What's our strategy now? - You should just go and spend everything.
0:18:27 > 0:18:31We're all in agreement that we're going to get a large proportion of insects.
0:18:31 > 0:18:35'Right, well, no, well, obviously... I think get some more of the hot water bottles.
0:18:35 > 0:18:36'Fake tan sells well'
0:18:36 > 0:18:38and whatever you think, a mixture of the other stuff.
0:18:38 > 0:18:41'It's up to you how much you buy now...'
0:18:41 > 0:18:43God...that's not a strategy is it?!
0:18:43 > 0:18:46- JADE CONTINUES TALKING - It's just a bit like nothing.
0:18:46 > 0:18:48She hasn't even thought about it, has she?
0:18:48 > 0:18:51'You know, I think in those situations when you're under' pressure,
0:18:51 > 0:18:55you've got to kind of wash that away and go right, clear thinking,
0:18:55 > 0:18:56just make a decision.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58And whatever your decision is just stick to it.
0:18:58 > 0:19:02I think maybe my lack of management skills in comparison to
0:19:02 > 0:19:04some of the rest shone through then, unfortunately.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12I was told by Karren that you just said to them as team leader,
0:19:12 > 0:19:14"Buy what you think you need."
0:19:14 > 0:19:19There was no... doesn't seem to be any strategy.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22Jade, who are you bringing back into his boardroom with you?
0:19:22 > 0:19:23I'm going to bring Azhar.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29'I couldn't make a decision about who to take in.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31'Now, it wasn't just for a minute,'
0:19:31 > 0:19:35I was faffing around for about four minutes saying,
0:19:35 > 0:19:38"Well, I know that I want to take Azhar but I don't know who else."
0:19:38 > 0:19:40Erm, and I'm going to bring...Tom.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43Right.
0:19:43 > 0:19:44OK, that's interesting.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47Jade made a lot of mistakes on the reinvestment task but I think
0:19:47 > 0:19:51the biggest mistake of all was taking Tom back into the boardroom with her.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55It proved more than anything else that she couldn't make a decision.
0:19:55 > 0:19:59She couldn't actually decide who should go in and for what reasons.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02I don't know who to choose.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04I know that Azhar caused a problem
0:20:04 > 0:20:07so it's hard to choose someone else when everyone else performed so well.
0:20:07 > 0:20:08Right, that it?
0:20:08 > 0:20:11Yeah, it's going to have to be, I don't know what else to do.
0:20:11 > 0:20:13When Jade lost as PM and she took me into the boardroom,
0:20:13 > 0:20:16obviously that was a big mistake cos I'm the strongest candidate
0:20:16 > 0:20:20and she didn't stand a chance, but she fought for every inch of her life.
0:20:20 > 0:20:23She wanted to be here. She showed grit, she showed determination
0:20:23 > 0:20:25and I think that rubbed off on Lord Sugar.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28So, Jade, why do you feel you should stay in this process?
0:20:28 > 0:20:33I have been a constant performer all the way through and I've sold all the way through.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37Lord Sugar had to look across the table and look at the energy
0:20:37 > 0:20:40and the passion between Azhar and Jade.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44And no wonder he kept Jade in the process. She fought for her life.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46Do you know something?
0:20:46 > 0:20:51It was her enthusiasm and passion that saved her from being fired.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54But when someone is not being constructive
0:20:54 > 0:20:56and saying the same sentence all the time about
0:20:56 > 0:20:59have you thought about this, this and this...?
0:20:59 > 0:21:00'Azhar...flat.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02'Unenthusiastic, didn't have the passion.'
0:21:02 > 0:21:07Her passion carried her through by the skin of her teeth.
0:21:11 > 0:21:14Jade's got a lot of qualities that I admire in a business woman.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17She is really creative. She's got a keen business mind.
0:21:17 > 0:21:22She can see through all the noise and be very straight forward and direct.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25We saw Jade as PM in task ten. Time to redeem herself.
0:21:28 > 0:21:29In week ten,
0:21:29 > 0:21:34the teams had to negotiate customer discounts for a daily deals website.
0:21:34 > 0:21:36Jade do you want...
0:21:36 > 0:21:38Hold on, let me just phone first before you ask me questions
0:21:38 > 0:21:40and then we can talk about it.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43Jade had plenty to prove.
0:21:43 > 0:21:46She did extraordinarily well. Strong team leader.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48I'd rather have quality over quantity.
0:21:48 > 0:21:50Yeah, OK.
0:21:50 > 0:21:51She laid down the rules.
0:21:51 > 0:21:54We want quality deals and plenty of them, giving a good margin.
0:21:54 > 0:21:59Success or failure came down to clinching one big deal.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02I think that this one's absolutely vital that we get The Sanctuary.
0:22:02 > 0:22:04Yeah, I'm the same.
0:22:04 > 0:22:06- In terms of leading the pitch for it...?- I'm going to do it.
0:22:06 > 0:22:08- Definitely going to do it?- Yeah.
0:22:08 > 0:22:10I would like to do it too.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13- It's a very important one, isn't it? - I'm sure I'll be fine.
0:22:13 > 0:22:18Targeting one of London's top spas, Jade went in hard.
0:22:20 > 0:22:23The site generally works that there's a 50% discount.
0:22:25 > 0:22:29A 50% rate is a far higher discount than we have ever, ever done.
0:22:32 > 0:22:35We think that you've got the right brand and the right product.
0:22:35 > 0:22:38You are the people that we are confident,
0:22:38 > 0:22:41if you could work with us, will get the best response.
0:22:41 > 0:22:45It looked doubtful, but her passion paid off.
0:22:46 > 0:22:50Right, OK. We could potentially offer the 50% discount.
0:22:50 > 0:22:53- You have got SUCH a high discount on there.- You've given us a great deal.
0:22:53 > 0:22:55Thank you very much, we know this is a great deal,
0:22:55 > 0:22:59- and hopefully it'll work really well. - Hopefully it'll work for all of us.
0:22:59 > 0:23:03If her deal sold well online, Jade would be back in the game.
0:23:05 > 0:23:10Jade's spa deal achieved 87 sales.
0:23:12 > 0:23:16Total revenue, 8,613
0:23:16 > 0:23:20So Phoenix win by over £8,000.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23ALL: Thank you, Lord Sugar.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27We know that Jade is creative, we know she's enthusiastic,
0:23:27 > 0:23:32very passionate, but has she got that icicle in the heart that makes
0:23:32 > 0:23:38her a good business woman in terms of strategy, and determination?
0:23:38 > 0:23:39The competition is strong
0:23:39 > 0:23:41but I'm here to prove that I can beat them all.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55Ricky Martin.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57Jab, foot across.
0:23:57 > 0:23:58Showman.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00And use it wisely cos there's only 200 bottles.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02They're gone today, and they're spicy as well.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05Self-assured.
0:24:05 > 0:24:07We're going with the biodegradable bin.
0:24:07 > 0:24:10So basically, we've invented the bin.
0:24:10 > 0:24:11ADAM SNIGGERS
0:24:11 > 0:24:13And dominating.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16As project manager that's quite insensitive.
0:24:16 > 0:24:19You've ignored me and said this is the product, get behind it.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21We're 100% behind it, we've told you that.
0:24:23 > 0:24:2826-year-old Ricky's trademark is an ability to sell...himself.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31I think Lord Sugar saw the potential in me.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34Just sat opposite the desk, he felt the charisma coming from me.
0:24:34 > 0:24:38Ricky was an interesting one cos he turned up like a showman,
0:24:38 > 0:24:40bit of a blagger.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42Ricky's got a lot to say for himself,
0:24:42 > 0:24:44and not all of it very good.
0:24:44 > 0:24:48I like to think of myself as a business superstar.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51When I'm in a group with men, I am the alpha male of that group.
0:24:53 > 0:24:57There's something about me that they all want to be around me
0:24:57 > 0:25:00and to follow me, so I'm always the leader of the pack.
0:25:00 > 0:25:03My biggest issue there is selling the gloves to the other guys
0:25:03 > 0:25:07- who in my opinion have made their decision regardless of what we've done today.- Yeah.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09- They're still going to run with Duane's idea.- Yes.
0:25:09 > 0:25:14When I first met Ricky I thought he was very arrogant.
0:25:14 > 0:25:18'I didn't really see how he could be successful in business.'
0:25:18 > 0:25:20'He can be a bit cocky.'
0:25:20 > 0:25:22I think he thinks he's quite a bit better than he is.
0:25:25 > 0:25:28But bluster didn't pass muster when in week three Ricky headed up
0:25:28 > 0:25:32a kitchen team making a new brand of sauce.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36Whoop, careful. Time is money, boys, time is money!
0:25:36 > 0:25:39Ricky really came to my attention in the condiment task.
0:25:39 > 0:25:43He was, "I'll run the factory, I'll look after the boys."
0:25:43 > 0:25:45Sugar, white wine vinegar, onion and water, please.
0:25:45 > 0:25:49Right, guys, we need to get the additional ingredient in here.
0:25:49 > 0:25:54In a task where quantity was key, the job needed organisation.
0:25:54 > 0:25:57Ricky! There's something wrong with it.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00Something's not right, something's missing, I don't know what.
0:26:00 > 0:26:02Then actually when it came down to it,
0:26:02 > 0:26:05he couldn't run the factory, he couldn't manage the boys.
0:26:05 > 0:26:09It was all loads of bravado and no substance.
0:26:09 > 0:26:12We're going to have to waste that batch then.
0:26:12 > 0:26:17Forgetting a single ingredient ruined a batch of over 100 bottles.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20Ricky's running the show and I think it should've been less haste,
0:26:20 > 0:26:21more speed, really.
0:26:21 > 0:26:25The condiment factory, I thought, I'm going to do this,
0:26:25 > 0:26:29I'm going to lead the guys to success here, but I was hugely to blame.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32In terms of our costings though.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35- Yep, well, let's not- BLEEP- panic, but what can we do?
0:26:45 > 0:26:47Afternoon.
0:26:47 > 0:26:48ALL: Good afternoon, Lord Sugar.
0:26:48 > 0:26:54In the boardroom, Lord Sugar nailed it, the loss was down to Ricky.
0:26:54 > 0:26:57It seems to me that the production was all screwed up here.
0:26:57 > 0:27:00One batch gets messed up cos there's not the correct ingredients in it
0:27:00 > 0:27:02and not enough is produced.
0:27:02 > 0:27:06But facing the firing line, Ricky put punch into his patter.
0:27:06 > 0:27:09First time Ricky was in the bottom three,
0:27:09 > 0:27:11that's when we saw Ricky the fighter come out.
0:27:11 > 0:27:14He absolutely floored Michael.
0:27:14 > 0:27:17You undelivered. You sold rubbish figures.
0:27:17 > 0:27:19I'd be embarrassed by those figures that you sold.
0:27:19 > 0:27:23He shifted the focus from himself to the sales team.
0:27:23 > 0:27:27The inner animal did come out of me at that stage
0:27:27 > 0:27:30and I pretty much fired Michael myself.
0:27:30 > 0:27:32You've been a passenger the whole way. You've sat on the fence...
0:27:32 > 0:27:34No... I think, you guys underestimate me.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37Lord Sugar wants to go into business with someone who
0:27:37 > 0:27:40makes things happen and makes money and you're not the man.
0:27:42 > 0:27:44Michael, you're fired.
0:27:45 > 0:27:48When he's been in the boardroom and when he's under pressure

0:33:05 > 0:33:09Ricky has been Project Manager twice, and he's lost both times.
0:33:09 > 0:33:12It's absolutely devastating, um,
0:33:12 > 0:33:15I truly believe I'm the best person in this process
0:33:15 > 0:33:19and it's gutting that I've lost on both times that I've led the group.

0:33:48 > 0:33:52- This is the second time you've been Project Manager...- Yes, Lord Sugar.
0:33:52 > 0:33:55- ..and the second time you've lost? - Yes...- You didn't bring your people
0:33:55 > 0:33:58- into a win the last time, did you? - Unfortunately not, no.
0:33:58 > 0:34:01Then we saw the bravado fall away, we saw the showman fall away,
0:34:01 > 0:34:05and we saw this real desire and passion to be in this process.
0:34:05 > 0:34:08With the lessons that I've learned from yourself, Nick and Karren,
0:34:08 > 0:34:11I feel I'm a much stronger person and the business plan I've got
0:34:11 > 0:34:15is so exciting, I've got so many ideas going into that, it is going
0:34:15 > 0:34:18- to make money and I'd love to be on that journey with you.- Hmm.
0:34:19 > 0:34:21CHEERING
0:34:21 > 0:34:23- JADE: Jenna's gone! NICK:- Welcome back!
0:34:23 > 0:34:25RICKY: How you doing? All right?
0:34:25 > 0:34:27Behind that thick skull,
0:34:27 > 0:34:30there's a big brain that beats at a very fast rate indeed.
0:34:30 > 0:34:32He's very structured, very articulate.
0:34:32 > 0:34:37I think we've definitely started to see a more rounded version of Ricky,
0:34:37 > 0:34:40far less showman and far more businessman.
0:34:43 > 0:34:47- Thank you very much! - Nick Holzherr! Articulate...
0:34:47 > 0:34:50Something that you wouldn't usually taste together -
0:34:50 > 0:34:51that's what we wanted to do.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54- So we'll give you an order for 50 cases.- Thank you very much.
0:34:54 > 0:34:56..perceptive...
0:34:56 > 0:34:59- For the first part, most important is to get an understanding...- Yeah.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02..of what is this wine? Who buys it? Why do they buy it?
0:35:02 > 0:35:05- ..and level-headed. - Before we miss out
0:35:05 > 0:35:07a certain step, we need to talk to the PM about it.
0:35:12 > 0:35:16Right from the start, nerves of steel from Nick.
0:35:16 > 0:35:20Is there anyone that wants to be the Project Manager?
0:35:21 > 0:35:24Anyone screaming out?
0:35:24 > 0:35:26I'll put myself forward if nobody wants to do it.
0:35:26 > 0:35:29He volunteers for the very first one, yeah?
0:35:29 > 0:35:31At least he had the bottle to go for it,
0:35:31 > 0:35:33when everybody else was shying away.
0:35:33 > 0:35:37- Congratulations! - Well done.- Cheers.
0:35:37 > 0:35:40Project managing seven people I've met for five minutes,
0:35:40 > 0:35:43um, a lot of pressure, a lot of responsibility and he stepped up to the plate,
0:35:43 > 0:35:46so I had a lot of respect for him for doing that.
0:35:46 > 0:35:48Being Project Manager, you're in the firing line
0:35:48 > 0:35:50and was aware that, if I had lost that task,
0:35:50 > 0:35:54or I made too many mistakes, I was in prime position to get fired.
0:35:54 > 0:35:57Nick's team decided to print designs on bags
0:35:57 > 0:36:00and teddies to sell to tourists.
0:36:00 > 0:36:04I think you should go for the smaller bears rather than larger bears. Smaller bears?
0:36:04 > 0:36:06I'm making the decision big bears.
0:36:06 > 0:36:08- KARREN:- Nick put himself forward to be the Project Manager
0:36:08 > 0:36:12in the first task, always the most difficult.
0:36:12 > 0:36:16People are fighting for the limelight, fighting to get their point across.
0:36:16 > 0:36:17Would they buy a bear for £15?
0:36:17 > 0:36:20In terms of starting point, we're agreed on £12, yeah?
0:36:20 > 0:36:22No, I've made a decision. £15 for it.
0:36:22 > 0:36:26Holding together some really strong characters is a skill
0:36:26 > 0:36:29and I think he showed that he has that skill.
0:36:29 > 0:36:32Try and hit £325 each for sales today.
0:36:32 > 0:36:36Nick spotted that high margins were the key to victory.
0:36:36 > 0:36:38We'll make the most profit if we sell the teddies at £15 -
0:36:38 > 0:36:41that's where the real massive margin's going to be.
0:36:41 > 0:36:46The thing about Nick that impresses me is that he always gets the task,
0:36:46 > 0:36:49but he does that in a very calm and measured way
0:36:49 > 0:36:52and that's a very, very good quality to have.
0:36:52 > 0:36:57Nick's ability to understand the real issue in a task,
0:36:57 > 0:36:59and grasp it,
0:36:59 > 0:37:01was evident in the flip-it task.
0:37:05 > 0:37:07It was Nick's second stint as project manager.
0:37:07 > 0:37:12Buy goods, spot top sellers and reinvest in more.
0:37:12 > 0:37:17It's not too heavy, not too orange, just goes on evenly, no streaks.
0:37:17 > 0:37:20Smell what sells and get some more. Pretty simple.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22- All the tan's gone now. - All the tan's gone now.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25So every bit of money we've got, reinvest it into tan?
0:37:25 > 0:37:28We only want tan, so as much money as we can straight into tan.
0:37:28 > 0:37:29Who won the task? Nick did.
0:37:29 > 0:37:32I gave you 150 quid and you demonstrated that,
0:37:32 > 0:37:38in the course of a day, that you can change that into £955.
0:37:38 > 0:37:42And so very, very well done to the winning team.
0:37:49 > 0:37:52Nick was born in Switzerland,
0:37:52 > 0:37:57showing little sign of the budding businessmen he would become.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59He was a very dreamy child.
0:37:59 > 0:38:01He was not really interested in, say,
0:38:01 > 0:38:03in academic work very much, or schoolwork,
0:38:03 > 0:38:06but he was very much interested in play.
0:38:07 > 0:38:10Mum was possibly a little bit worried that I maybe
0:38:10 > 0:38:15wasn't that intelligent or that I may need some kind of help somehow.
0:38:17 > 0:38:20I didn't have a TV until I was quite a bit older.
0:38:20 > 0:38:23Um, we didn't listen to much music. It was very much based around, um,
0:38:23 > 0:38:26building sort of camps out in the woods.
0:38:26 > 0:38:30My childhood was very much based outdoors.
0:38:30 > 0:38:34But Nick's dreamy childhood was brought to an abrupt end
0:38:34 > 0:38:37when his father had a serious accident.
0:38:38 > 0:38:41When I was 18 and saving up money to go travelling,
0:38:41 > 0:38:45um, my dad had an accident, unfortunately, when he was paragliding.
0:38:45 > 0:38:49The last thing I remember was the paraglider snapping open,
0:38:49 > 0:38:52I must've swung violently to and fro
0:38:52 > 0:38:55and landed on my left shoulder, because...
0:38:55 > 0:38:57but I had blacked out by the time I hit the ground.
0:38:57 > 0:38:59I was the only sort of family member, really,
0:38:59 > 0:39:03sort of old enough or sort of, er, responsible enough, I guess,
0:39:03 > 0:39:07to sort everything out, so I had to spend a few months helping him
0:39:07 > 0:39:11get back to England and helping him sort of recover from the accident.
0:39:12 > 0:39:17Yes. That was, that was quite, quite a difficult time.
0:39:17 > 0:39:21It was difficult, being 18 years old and having quite a lot of responsibility.
0:39:21 > 0:39:24I had to use my initiative, I had to use my common sense,
0:39:24 > 0:39:26had to plan things, organise things,
0:39:26 > 0:39:29and I think those are skills that I use in business every day.
0:39:31 > 0:39:34In the end, Nick got his round-the-world trip
0:39:34 > 0:39:37and it helped him focus on business.
0:39:37 > 0:39:40Um, travelling did have quite a big impact on me.
0:39:40 > 0:39:42You know, I was quite quiet and dreamy before I went.
0:39:42 > 0:39:44I think what made me interested in business
0:39:44 > 0:39:47was actually seeing how many different ways of doing business,
0:39:47 > 0:39:50whether that's selling deep-fried bugs on the street corner
0:39:50 > 0:39:53or whether it's selling trinkets or whatever.
0:39:53 > 0:39:57And I did come back more clear with what I actually wanted to do
0:39:57 > 0:40:00and I wanted do business and I wanted to make lots of money
0:40:00 > 0:40:01and wanted to kind of conquer the world.
0:40:01 > 0:40:06At university in Birmingham, spotting a gap in the market,
0:40:06 > 0:40:08he set up his first venture.
0:40:08 > 0:40:10The first company I set up, which was kind of set up
0:40:10 > 0:40:13when I was at university, was called CoGo MoGo.
0:40:13 > 0:40:15It was actually based on the campus itself.
0:40:15 > 0:40:17He knew there'd be lots of students, his perfect target market -
0:40:17 > 0:40:20they want a cheap cup of coffee and he can provide that for them.
0:40:20 > 0:40:23People loved to buy the coffee, we had a big fan base of it.
0:40:23 > 0:40:28It's been so successful, I think the regional businesses in the area selling coffee have really struggled.
0:40:28 > 0:40:31When I came to finishing university, or came close to finishing,
0:40:31 > 0:40:33I did have some very attractive job offers on the plate,
0:40:33 > 0:40:35so I decided to take the sort of plunge into
0:40:35 > 0:40:38setting my own business up. It is difficult to, um...
0:40:38 > 0:40:41really difficult to make money in business, um, but we succeeded.
0:40:46 > 0:40:48After selling the coffee operation,
0:40:48 > 0:40:52Nick started a phone-based business card company.
0:40:54 > 0:40:55We created a platform where users could
0:40:55 > 0:40:58link information about themselves to a QR code.
0:40:58 > 0:41:01You click one button. It saves all the contact details onto your phone,
0:41:01 > 0:41:04you link with social media to it, you can track how many people
0:41:04 > 0:41:06are scanning my business card and where from.
0:41:06 > 0:41:08I'm really, really proud of what Nick's achieved.
0:41:08 > 0:41:11It's been amazing to see his success in his businesses,
0:41:11 > 0:41:14but it's not something we had ever had past him.
0:41:16 > 0:41:21Nick is a nice young man and nice is a strength,
0:41:21 > 0:41:22but sometimes it can be a weakness.
0:41:22 > 0:41:24When you see something going wrong,
0:41:24 > 0:41:26you've got to have the force of personality
0:41:26 > 0:41:29to rush into the middle of the fray and stamp your foot
0:41:29 > 0:41:32and say, "No! You've gotta change... This is wrong!"
0:41:32 > 0:41:37- 1.20?- I've got no clue on this. I don't buy this shit.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43In week four, Nick's team created designs to revamp
0:41:43 > 0:41:45and sell on bric-a-brac.
0:41:47 > 0:41:49< They're all mini tables.
0:41:49 > 0:41:52Do people buy this kind of stuff as mini tables?
0:41:52 > 0:41:56£60 I'd probably pay for something like this.
0:41:56 > 0:41:58That's too tall, perhaps.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00I still just think it looks like a box on a ladder.
0:42:00 > 0:42:03- KARREN:- 'He knew that that wasn't going to be'
0:42:03 > 0:42:06the best way forward, but he didn't step up and he didn't say it.
0:42:06 > 0:42:08Actually, I really like that.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12Um, some of the things did look a bit, er, odd.
0:42:12 > 0:42:14Sometimes I'm a little bit too quiet,
0:42:14 > 0:42:16I say things and don't push them through enough.
0:42:16 > 0:42:18And in week five,
0:42:18 > 0:42:22realising his team's fitness video was going wrong,
0:42:22 > 0:42:25Nick still kept quiet.
0:42:25 > 0:42:28I think, talking about the vision of what the film will look like,
0:42:28 > 0:42:29my big concern now is
0:42:29 > 0:42:33to make sure that we do create a martial art dance routine and not just a dance routine.
0:42:33 > 0:42:36We are in danger of just creating another dance routine.
0:42:36 > 0:42:41Back! One, two, three, four! Knee crunch!
0:42:41 > 0:42:45I disagree, but it doesn't mean... As I say, one person leads it, I'm happy to go with it.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48NICK: 'He was absolutely right.'
0:42:48 > 0:42:50Did he roar in there, stamp his foot,
0:42:50 > 0:42:54do a double somersault and demand that things were changed?
0:42:54 > 0:42:58No, he didn't! And it cost them. They lost on that.
0:42:58 > 0:43:00I don't think he's that argumentative.
0:43:00 > 0:43:01I think he's very easy-going.
0:43:01 > 0:43:06On occasions, he should potentially maybe stand up for his ideas better.
0:43:06 > 0:43:12The headline here is that everyone says, "Yes, a good idea,"
0:43:12 > 0:43:14but not executed, um, properly,
0:43:14 > 0:43:18so it looks pretty samey to things that are on the market.
0:43:18 > 0:43:22Nick's laid-back approach has a positive side.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25He's a natural peacemaker.
0:43:25 > 0:43:28- It's the same thing!- No, no.- We have an opinion and you don't like it!
0:43:28 > 0:43:32- It's not that!- It is! I'm getting a bit pissed off, if I'm quite honest!
0:43:32 > 0:43:36- Yeah, let's be friends on this, OK? - Yeah!- Shake hands, guys.
0:43:36 > 0:43:38I'm all for... No, let's not force it. Like I think...
0:43:38 > 0:43:41NICK LAUGHS
0:43:41 > 0:43:44- KARREN:- 'The thing about Nick, he's very much a team player.'
0:43:44 > 0:43:48He brings people together, he can't be bothered with the politics.
0:43:48 > 0:43:50It's all about the task, it's all about the business
0:43:50 > 0:43:52and it's all about winning.
0:43:52 > 0:43:57- Team Sterling!- His mix of talent and character has gone down well.
0:43:57 > 0:43:59GABRIELLE LAUGHS: Group hug, guys!
0:43:59 > 0:44:03And in week nine, he was one of five candidates on offer.
0:44:03 > 0:44:06You three, choose one of these people
0:44:06 > 0:44:08you'd like to come and join you.
0:44:08 > 0:44:10- JADE AND ADAM: Nick. - Do you think?!
0:44:10 > 0:44:11- Yeah.- Yeah.- Nick, please.
0:44:11 > 0:44:14- Nick, you're very popular. > - ADAM:- Welcome!
0:44:14 > 0:44:17JADE: 'I really like working with Nick.'
0:44:17 > 0:44:20He's a very intelligent man, very good at putting his point across.
0:44:20 > 0:44:23I think he's a really strong contender.
0:44:23 > 0:44:26Being chosen by the other team to come over and join them was
0:44:26 > 0:44:29a massive compliment to me and made me, you know, it did feel very good.
0:44:29 > 0:44:32- KARREN:- 'Nick's the most successful candidate in the final five
0:44:32 > 0:44:35'and, actually, he's never been in the bottom three.
0:44:35 > 0:44:37'But the downside of that is you don't'
0:44:37 > 0:44:39get to be in the boardroom with Lord Sugar.
0:44:39 > 0:44:43He doesn't get to know about you, he doesn't hear your passion,
0:44:43 > 0:44:46sense your enthusiasm to be in the process,
0:44:46 > 0:44:51so he really, really now has to shine through.
0:44:51 > 0:44:55One, two, three! Switch, switch!
0:44:55 > 0:44:59- Go-getter... - Mind your backs now! ..Go on!
0:44:59 > 0:45:01- Where am I going? - Just keep running!- Where?
0:45:01 > 0:45:03..fearless...
0:45:03 > 0:45:0650p a bag now, last few bags.
0:45:06 > 0:45:10Vintage shop, vintage prices. We've got the last few bits now for you.
0:45:10 > 0:45:12..and a charmer.
0:45:12 > 0:45:15- How are you, girls? Nice to meet you.- Hi.- I'm Adam.
0:45:15 > 0:45:17- Anything you need, just give me a shout.- Thank you.
0:45:17 > 0:45:20We've got five hot water bottle,
0:45:20 > 0:45:22complete with covers now, left to do at a fiver.
0:45:22 > 0:45:25Your gift ideas now. The last five!
0:45:25 > 0:45:31Natural salesman with a market stall banter, 32-year-old Adam Corbally.
0:45:31 > 0:45:36Shout out a number. Not your phone numbers, girls. A price.
0:45:36 > 0:45:39There you go, sweetheart. Help yourself. Tell me what you think.
0:45:39 > 0:45:44- Do you want two for a fiver?- No. - D'you want another, yeah? Good lad.
0:45:44 > 0:45:47Two for a fiver. Thank you. Last few bits now, let's clear 'em up!
0:45:50 > 0:45:53Adam loves to be the centre of attention.
0:45:53 > 0:45:56But his mouth gets him into trouble.
0:45:56 > 0:45:59Regardless of what the task is, he's been in the boardroom
0:45:59 > 0:46:04a number of times reminding Alan, "Credit where credit's due."
0:46:04 > 0:46:08You know, I had a major role in the operation, as per usual.
0:46:08 > 0:46:11- Ricky ran the job... - Modesty manager, was it, yeah?
0:46:11 > 0:46:15Well, you know, credit where it's due and obviously...
0:46:15 > 0:46:18Well, I'll decide whether there's any credit due.
0:46:22 > 0:46:26It was utterly delicious at first and then I think I added
0:46:26 > 0:46:28the, er, the key name Meatballs
0:46:28 > 0:46:32- I believe...- But we're obviously going to put "meatballs" in there!
0:46:32 > 0:46:36He just irritates me. I can't do anything about it, it's nothing personal,
0:46:36 > 0:46:38he's just not my best mate.
0:46:39 > 0:46:43And he doesn't just save his banter for the boardroom.
0:46:43 > 0:46:46700 square foot unit, with the table and chairs in,
0:46:46 > 0:46:48it's going to look stupid.
0:46:48 > 0:46:49We've all got some fantastic ideas
0:46:49 > 0:46:52and I'm sure everyone's ideas are valid.
0:46:52 > 0:46:56We're not on the pitch yet, Azhar, not pitching the product yet. You don't have to convince us, mate!
0:47:00 > 0:47:04It's not important what HE does, it's important what the team does
0:47:04 > 0:47:06and that was never more evident than in the fitness task.
0:47:06 > 0:47:09This when we are thinking of is this, you know,
0:47:09 > 0:47:11with the claws, then this.
0:47:12 > 0:47:17In week five, Adam muscled in on Jade's fitness video,
0:47:17 > 0:47:19as choreographer.
0:47:19 > 0:47:22Congratulations. Well done for making the cut.
0:47:22 > 0:47:26So loads of energy, big smiles, and let's make a video.
0:47:26 > 0:47:30He's the "choreographer"! I mean, what difference does it make?
0:47:30 > 0:47:34Really sticking his nose in, trying to make himself important.
0:47:34 > 0:47:36AZHAR: Can I suggest an idea?
0:47:36 > 0:47:38When I say, "Welcome to the Groove Train,"
0:47:38 > 0:47:40you fade in a spinning ball, maybe?
0:47:40 > 0:47:43- We'll do that in editing...- I need to be involved in this conversation,
0:47:43 > 0:47:47- cos I'm telling the dancers what to do...- This is the conversation.
0:47:47 > 0:47:49- Right, OK.- There you go.- So that's your introduction?- Yeah...
0:47:49 > 0:47:54- But rather than just everyone speak all at...- That's what it is.- Right.
0:47:54 > 0:47:57'I think the reason why Adam was going on and,'
0:47:57 > 0:48:00you know, trying to get everybody to smile when I was directing
0:48:00 > 0:48:04and, you know, interrupting, really, is because he wants to be heard,
0:48:04 > 0:48:08to be seen he's doing something, but sometimes, you just need to shut up.
0:48:08 > 0:48:11- < JADE TALKS - # What a feeling! You all know this one... #
0:48:11 > 0:48:12AZHAR: Adam?
0:48:12 > 0:48:15- # ..here's believing... # - Adam?- You what?
0:48:19 > 0:48:23'I don't think we've yet seen a complete picture of who Adam is.'
0:48:23 > 0:48:27He's a great salesman, he's very enthusiastic,
0:48:27 > 0:48:29but he does lose his way occasionally.
0:48:32 > 0:48:36Growing up with two brothers in Glossop, Derbyshire,
0:48:36 > 0:48:40there was no sign of the mouthy market trader.
0:48:40 > 0:48:43Believe it or not, as a child growing up, I was very, very shy.
0:48:46 > 0:48:47When he went to nursery and school,
0:48:47 > 0:48:51he'd sort of cling to me, I'd sort of have to rip him off me
0:48:51 > 0:48:56to take him into school. There was a time when he was on stage at school,
0:48:56 > 0:48:58and he was only young, but he had his hand over his eyes
0:48:58 > 0:49:01and he didn't want to look at the audience, he was so shy.
0:49:01 > 0:49:04And in the end, he started crying and they sort of dragged him off
0:49:04 > 0:49:07and, by then, I was in tears, because I wanted to go and rescue him.
0:49:09 > 0:49:14When his parents divorced, Adam's life changed.
0:49:14 > 0:49:19He was eight. It did affect him quite, quite badly.
0:49:21 > 0:49:24I was, um, a single mum for a few years,
0:49:24 > 0:49:27so it was quite difficult financially,
0:49:27 > 0:49:33but, er, I worked long hours, which meant that sometimes they were
0:49:33 > 0:49:36left to their own devices, which perhaps wasn't too good a thing.
0:49:38 > 0:49:41At secondary school, you meet lots of new people,
0:49:41 > 0:49:43you make lots of new friends
0:49:43 > 0:49:45and you start going to parties, obviously,
0:49:45 > 0:49:48you start meeting girls and all that kind of thing.
0:49:51 > 0:49:54He ended up with poor grades.
0:49:54 > 0:49:59I left school at 16, I got a job, left a job, got a job, left a job.
0:49:59 > 0:50:02When he left school, he had a lot of different jobs.
0:50:02 > 0:50:05I think he realised that he should've tried harder at school
0:50:05 > 0:50:07and he should've got more qualifications.
0:50:07 > 0:50:12I must've had 20 jobs before I realised I wanted to work for myself.
0:50:15 > 0:50:17With a flash of entrepreneurial flair,
0:50:17 > 0:50:21Adam set up a food and veg stall in Glossop market.
0:50:22 > 0:50:25I think I surprised everyone, including myself,
0:50:25 > 0:50:27when I set my own business up at 19.
0:50:27 > 0:50:30It's not the sort of thing people were doing back then, you know.
0:50:30 > 0:50:34Work was good, there was a lot of jobs knocking about,
0:50:34 > 0:50:36it wasn't like it is now.
0:50:36 > 0:50:39Yeah, I choose to work for myself and I've never regretted it.
0:50:39 > 0:50:42You know, you have some good days and some bad days.
0:50:42 > 0:50:45People don't realise how hard you actually have to work,
0:50:45 > 0:50:47you know, especially in the early days.
0:50:47 > 0:50:51You've got to work day and night, holidays are out the window,
0:50:51 > 0:50:54spare time's out the window and, sometimes, wages are out the window.
0:50:54 > 0:51:00Adam ploughed his profits into a £1 million property portfolio.
0:51:00 > 0:51:03He's got eight houses that he rents out.
0:51:03 > 0:51:05But what you'll do is he'll weigh things up
0:51:05 > 0:51:08and, if he thinks it's a good investment, he will go for it.
0:51:08 > 0:51:12Yeah, when people first meet Adam, they think he's just a joker
0:51:12 > 0:51:15and a comedian, but he's got another side to him, a business mind.
0:51:15 > 0:51:17Not many people see this, but working with him, I get to see
0:51:17 > 0:51:20that he never switches off, he's 100% on the ball all the time.
0:51:26 > 0:51:30Adam's watershed moment came after the gourmet food task.
0:51:30 > 0:51:35There's been a bit of a revolution, as far as street food is concerned,
0:51:35 > 0:51:41so your next task is all about setting up a mobile restaurant.
0:51:41 > 0:51:46This is quality food. I don't want any junk served up here.
0:51:46 > 0:51:50- Adam, you will be team leader... - Thank you.- ..of Phoenix, OK.
0:51:50 > 0:51:53Task six, going up to Scotland,
0:51:53 > 0:51:56I learned a hell of a lot about people in my team, about myself.
0:51:57 > 0:52:02Lord Sugar appointed Adam to be in charge of the food task in Scotland
0:52:02 > 0:52:04and what was the brief? Gourmet food.
0:52:04 > 0:52:06Could we use dried rosemary? Maybe it's cheaper?
0:52:06 > 0:52:10- It doesn't have the same flavour as the fresh.- Yeah, but I'm just thinking of cost, but...
0:52:10 > 0:52:12Without wishing to be unkind,
0:52:12 > 0:52:16it may well be that Adam struggled with the meaning of the word gourmet.
0:52:16 > 0:52:19He wanted to cut corners and go cheap, cheap and I was like,
0:52:19 > 0:52:21"Yeah, but that's not gourmet, it'll taste horrible."
0:52:21 > 0:52:24It's just about profit, you know, not taste and...
0:52:24 > 0:52:29I know what you're saying, but I think we need to find that balance about cost and quality.
0:52:29 > 0:52:31Hearts programme!
0:52:31 > 0:52:35After Adam's high-margin meatballs failed to score
0:52:35 > 0:52:38- with local football fans... - Get your meatballs now, guys.
0:52:38 > 0:52:43- 5.99!- ..Lord Sugar put him through the mincer.
0:52:43 > 0:52:44WHISTLE BLOWS
0:52:44 > 0:52:48I believe that one of the problems of this task was that
0:52:48 > 0:52:52your market trader mentality kicked in, "Keep the costs right down,
0:52:52 > 0:52:57"make something very, very simple and flog it for a load of money."
0:52:57 > 0:53:02- How much were they?- 5.99 we priced them at.- 5.99?- Per portion, yeah.
0:53:02 > 0:53:06- At a Hearts football match in...? - Yeah, based on the research team...
0:53:06 > 0:53:09- They don't pay that for a striker! - KARREN LAUGHS
0:53:10 > 0:53:13It felt awful to lose, it really did.
0:53:13 > 0:53:17I felt like I'd let the team down, I'd let myself down,
0:53:17 > 0:53:21I felt I'd let Lord Sugar down, I felt like I'd let everyone down.
0:53:21 > 0:53:22Why should I let you stay here, Adam?
0:53:22 > 0:53:25Lord Sugar, I'd be perfect as your business partner,
0:53:25 > 0:53:29- a really hard work...- Simple words! Give me something better than that!
0:53:29 > 0:53:31- Please!- Keep me in this process, I'll show you what I've got.
0:53:31 > 0:53:35I've done as well as I can and, you know, I'm here to do even better.
0:53:35 > 0:53:37OK.
0:53:37 > 0:53:40He got such a telling off in the boardroom for the mistakes
0:53:40 > 0:53:45he had made that, actually, I think he understood it was make or break.
0:53:45 > 0:53:47Adam...
0:53:47 > 0:53:50You're certainly an enthusiastic person,
0:53:50 > 0:53:55but there are at least two or three big errors been made on this task
0:53:55 > 0:53:58and you were supposed to be the team leader.
0:53:58 > 0:54:00'Lord Sugar gave me some really good advice on that task,'
0:54:00 > 0:54:03which was less mouth and more brains.
0:54:03 > 0:54:05I took that advice on board.
0:54:05 > 0:54:09You got away with it, you know, on the borderline here, OK?
0:54:09 > 0:54:11I understand that, Lord Sugar.
0:54:11 > 0:54:14'He had to really man up and understand what this process'
0:54:14 > 0:54:19is about - listen, learn, adapt, improve or go home.
0:54:22 > 0:54:23Thank you. Thanks very much.
0:54:23 > 0:54:30The very next week, Adam shone shifting goods in a market...
0:54:30 > 0:54:34I'll do it for a tenner for all three, just cos it's raining. ..Thank you, that's great.
0:54:34 > 0:54:39..confirming his reputation as the group's best salesman.
0:54:39 > 0:54:43We've got the self tan we can do a deal on with rainy-day prices.
0:54:43 > 0:54:47In the boardroom, it was all praise.
0:54:47 > 0:54:50The stuff was flying out in the market,
0:54:50 > 0:54:53mainly down to Adam's market patter.
0:54:53 > 0:54:57"Rainy-day prices! Come on, gorgeous ladies!" And all sorts I heard.
0:54:57 > 0:54:59- LORD SUGAR:- Good.
0:54:59 > 0:55:04But in week eight, the urban art task threw Adam
0:55:04 > 0:55:06into unfamiliar territory.
0:55:06 > 0:55:09I'm a bit of a novice, to be honest with you. I do appreciate it and I love that.
0:55:09 > 0:55:11It gets your mind going, doesn't it?
0:55:11 > 0:55:14Following the roasting that Lord Sugar gave him
0:55:14 > 0:55:16on the food task, right, he picked up his game
0:55:16 > 0:55:20and started to actually learn and that became evident on the art task.
0:55:20 > 0:55:25I've actually connected with quite a few of the artists and my interpretations of their work,
0:55:25 > 0:55:27but this, to me, is the best thing we've seen all day.
0:55:27 > 0:55:29Adam and art?
0:55:30 > 0:55:32Chalk and cheese?
0:55:32 > 0:55:34One of the questions we was asked today was,
0:55:34 > 0:55:38"Which medium does he use?" Now, a medium to me is someone who's used to contact the other side.
0:55:40 > 0:55:43I think Adam's proved he's a quick learner, he can adapt.
0:55:43 > 0:55:48He's learning about the business process, about smoothing off some of the edges.
0:55:48 > 0:55:50- Which one do you want, sweetheart? - Um, the bottom one.
0:55:50 > 0:55:52The bottom one? Yeah, no problem.
0:55:52 > 0:55:56He suddenly began to realise it's not all about shouting.
0:55:56 > 0:55:59Yeah, I can do you that as a print or in the frame.
0:55:59 > 0:56:02- Just a print.- Yeah, do you want one of those?- Yes, please.- No problem.
0:56:02 > 0:56:07And who came away, a million miles adrift of his comfort zone,
0:56:07 > 0:56:10with the biggest sales?
0:56:10 > 0:56:13Step forward, Adam. Extraordinary.
0:56:13 > 0:56:15£750 please.
0:56:17 > 0:56:20I think, during the course of the past eight weeks, has shown that he can adapt.
0:56:20 > 0:56:22He started off like a bit of a nutter,
0:56:22 > 0:56:25but has really actually moulded his way into the process.
0:56:27 > 0:56:30Adam is an exceptional salesman.
0:56:30 > 0:56:33What we need to know is, is he more than just that?
