0:01:16 > 0:01:18CHEERING

0:01:18 > 0:01:23But first, she is one of the most famous names in global politics.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25She's been a First Lady, a senator, a Secretary of State

0:01:25 > 0:01:27and last year she ran as

0:01:27 > 0:01:31the first female presidential nominee for a major US party.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32Here to tell us what happened,

0:01:32 > 0:01:35please welcome Hillary Rodham Clinton.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:39 > 0:01:40So lovely to see you.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44CHEERING DROWNS SPEECH

0:01:47 > 0:01:51CHEERING CONTINUES

0:01:51 > 0:01:55- They're very excited! - I am too.- They're very excited.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57They really wanted to see you.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Oh, I am so happy to be here, Graham.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03Thank you so much. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05It's lovely to have you here, we're delighted to see you.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07- Now...- OK, so...

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Literally what happened?

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Another "what happened?" So, I was...

0:02:12 > 0:02:17I was literally running down flights of stairs in my hotel

0:02:17 > 0:02:21and I had a cup of coffee in my hand.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22Not a smart idea.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25And my heel caught on the stair

0:02:25 > 0:02:30and so I jerked this way,

0:02:30 > 0:02:31with the coffee still in my hand,

0:02:31 > 0:02:36and fell backwards, thankfully, not forwards,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38and I have a fractured toe.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Oh. AUDIENCE: Oh!

0:02:41 > 0:02:43- Yeah, nothing worse than that.- Yeah.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44I can tell you,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47I've had excellent, excellent medical care

0:02:47 > 0:02:50by your English medical system.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52- Thank you all very much. - You're very welcome.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54- And I have one of these big boots on.- It's very...

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Can I just say, we don't all get such a nice clean, space age boot.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Often it's just newspaper and string.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02LAUGHTER

0:03:02 > 0:03:05But it's proven to be a life-saver, cos I can walk around.

0:03:05 > 0:03:11- Do you feel jinxed? I mean... - Well...- ..bad things happen to you.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Well, you know, as I was running down the stairs,

0:03:14 > 0:03:17somebody yelled, "Give him the boot!" but I didn't expect...

0:03:17 > 0:03:22- No, because it does seem sometimes like the world is against you.- Oh...

0:03:22 > 0:03:24You know, in 2008, it was your turn

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- and then along came Barack Obama. - Well, he did a great job.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Then it was your turn and Bernie Sanders came along.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Then it was your turn, Trump come along.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35I mean, it is like the universe is working against you.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Well, I just think it shows

0:03:37 > 0:03:41that some of us are able to overcome obstacles from the universe

0:03:41 > 0:03:43and that's part of life.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46And part of my book is about resilience,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48because everybody gets knocked down in life.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51You may not lose the presidential campaign of the United States,

0:03:51 > 0:03:53but...

0:03:53 > 0:03:54Phew.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57But there will be disappointments, there will be losses

0:03:57 > 0:04:00and, as my late mother just drilled into me,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04it's not at all about getting knocked down, that's inevitable,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06it's about getting back up.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- And so here I am, back up with my foot in a boot.- Literally!

0:04:09 > 0:04:12CHEERING

0:04:12 > 0:04:16Now, you're...

0:04:16 > 0:04:17- You're here with your book...- Yes.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21..What Happened, tells the story of last year's election.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23And first of all, can I just say,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I was slightly worried I might find it a little dry.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30- You know, a bit...- Drink more wine! - ..a bit fact heavy.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33I couldn't drink more, Hillary!

0:04:34 > 0:04:35But you've...

0:04:35 > 0:04:37How hard was that, to get the balance right?

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Because there's enough in there for the political nerds

0:04:40 > 0:04:42but then for a general reader like me

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- it's a really engaging, warm human story.- Thank you.

0:04:45 > 0:04:46Oh, Graham, thank you,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48because I wanted it to be both personal and political,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50because it was a personal and political journey

0:04:50 > 0:04:52that I was writing about.

0:04:52 > 0:04:58And I really decided to do it partly to answer that question.

0:04:58 > 0:04:59You know, I feel like I have,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02so the title doesn't have a question mark on it,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04but I wanted to know what happened.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07It was such a surprise, it was so shocking

0:05:07 > 0:05:11and obviously devastating and all kinds of consequences from that.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14So, I dove into it

0:05:14 > 0:05:20and I came out of it with a really strong sense of catharsis.

0:05:20 > 0:05:21I write in the book about

0:05:21 > 0:05:23how I got through those first weeks and months.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27You know, walks in the woods, playing with my dogs,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30spending time with my friends, yoga...

0:05:31 > 0:05:34- ..my share of Chardonnay.- Yeah.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38I mean, it was a combination of tools and experiences

0:05:38 > 0:05:42that helped me get back on my feet.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44But to go from every day,

0:05:44 > 0:05:47every minute of every day being sort of answered for

0:05:47 > 0:05:51to suddenly have...days, what was that like?

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Oh, well, after I gave the concession speech

0:05:54 > 0:05:58and, really, there were so many of my friends and supporters there

0:05:58 > 0:06:01and they were all crying, and so I was comforting them

0:06:01 > 0:06:04because they were equally distraught,

0:06:04 > 0:06:08and I got a few phone calls from people during that period,

0:06:08 > 0:06:09and then finally it was over

0:06:09 > 0:06:11and I walked out to the car with my husband

0:06:11 > 0:06:13and we got into the back seat,

0:06:13 > 0:06:15and it was just like somebody pulled the drain.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16I mean, all of the energy,

0:06:16 > 0:06:20all of the adrenaline which I had been running on for months,

0:06:20 > 0:06:22because you don't get enough sleep

0:06:22 > 0:06:26and it's, you know, really a constant marathon.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30So, I just really collapsed.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33I just thought, "Oh, my gosh, I can't believe this happened,"

0:06:33 > 0:06:35and I felt so terrible.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39I really felt responsible for the loss.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43But I got home and, you know, put on some sweat pants and a fleece

0:06:43 > 0:06:45and kind of just wandered around.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49And then the next day my husband and I went for a walk in the woods

0:06:49 > 0:06:52and we were moving along with our dogs

0:06:52 > 0:06:56and I turned a corner and there was a young, young woman there

0:06:56 > 0:06:58and she had her baby in a backpack and she had her dog

0:06:58 > 0:07:01and she saw me and she just cried out

0:07:01 > 0:07:03and asked if she could give me a hug,

0:07:03 > 0:07:07and she did. And so she was so upset,

0:07:07 > 0:07:08and that's been my experience

0:07:08 > 0:07:11nearly every day since that I've been in public,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13is that so many people,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17predominantly women but not exclusively,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20have been just so upset for all kinds of reasons.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Well, it was interesting.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- That photograph of you with the woman in the woods...- Yeah.

0:07:24 > 0:07:25..it went viral.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27I think part of the reason it went viral

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- is because we were so happy to see you smiling.- Oh, thank you.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32That you weren't caked in mascara, hugging a jug of wine...

0:07:32 > 0:07:34LAUGHTER

0:07:34 > 0:07:36..rocking.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39And this went viral, but then, apparently,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42the woods in upstate New York became like looking for Bigfoot.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Yes!- They're all up there.- Yes!

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Yes, we would show up and there would be people waiting.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50You know, that's one of the things that Bill and I love to do are

0:07:50 > 0:07:51go for these walks,

0:07:51 > 0:07:53and occasionally there would be photographers.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56So we kept moving from nature reserve to nature reserve,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58trying to outsmart the crowds.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Here's a family that found the two of you.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03And then people weren't satisfied with that, they started...

0:08:03 > 0:08:05- They posted a lot...- They started to put you in things.- Yes.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08So, here is #hillaryinthewild.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Literally the Reese Witherspoon movie.

0:08:11 > 0:08:12I hope so!

0:08:12 > 0:08:14And then this, this is very good, this is an actual sighting

0:08:14 > 0:08:16of Hillary Rodham Bigfoot.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18There she is...

0:08:18 > 0:08:20LAUGHTER ..in the distance.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Well, you know, laughing is, as you are an expert at,

0:08:24 > 0:08:26the best cure for nearly everything

0:08:26 > 0:08:28if you can get back the energy to laugh

0:08:28 > 0:08:31and make fun of yourself and, you know, just start having a good time.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35So, you do the walking, the yoga, a few trips to the bottle bank.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- Yes.- You're probably feeling a bit better.- Right.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41But then, I mean, it's sort of Shakespearean,

0:08:41 > 0:08:44- you went to the inauguration. - I know.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46And that was because you were First Lady,

0:08:46 > 0:08:47- not because you've been nominee. - Right.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50And I really tried to get out of going.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52- LAUGHTER - I...

0:08:52 > 0:08:56You know, because I was going not as the candidate or the opponent

0:08:56 > 0:08:58but as a former first lady,

0:08:58 > 0:09:02because the tradition is presidents and former first ladies all show up,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04regardless of Republican or Democrat,

0:09:04 > 0:09:07to show support, continuity of our government.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10So, we thought, "OK, maybe others aren't going."

0:09:10 > 0:09:12So, you know, we called...

0:09:12 > 0:09:15LAUGHTER

0:09:15 > 0:09:16We called the Bushes

0:09:16 > 0:09:17and the elder Bushes were in the hospital,

0:09:17 > 0:09:19which I think was legitimate.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE

0:09:22 > 0:09:24So then...

0:09:24 > 0:09:27You know, we called the younger Bushes

0:09:27 > 0:09:28and they said, "Yeah, we're going."

0:09:28 > 0:09:30We called the Carters they said, "Yeah, we're going."

0:09:30 > 0:09:32So, you know, Bill and I looked at each other

0:09:32 > 0:09:34and said, "Well, we've got to go."

0:09:34 > 0:09:39Oh, my gosh, I try to describe in the book what that felt like,

0:09:39 > 0:09:41because I didn't know what to expect.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44What I wanted to have happen

0:09:44 > 0:09:47was, despite the kind of campaign he ran,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50I wanted him to rise to the occasion of being our president

0:09:50 > 0:09:53and being the president for everybody,

0:09:53 > 0:09:55not just people who supported him.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56That didn't happen.

0:09:56 > 0:10:01And so, we were sitting there and we were listening.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04I was sitting next to George W Bush and Bill was on my other side,

0:10:04 > 0:10:08and we were listening to this really dark, divisive speech

0:10:08 > 0:10:13that I describe as a cry from the White Nationalist gut,

0:10:13 > 0:10:16and I was so disappointed.

0:10:16 > 0:10:22Really so...so sad that it wasn't an outreach,

0:10:22 > 0:10:23it was a narrowing

0:10:23 > 0:10:26and a hammering of what he had said before.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29And it's reported, so I put it in the book,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32it's reported that George W Bush as it ends says,

0:10:32 > 0:10:34"That was some weird shit."

0:10:34 > 0:10:37LAUGHTER

0:10:37 > 0:10:39APPLAUSE

0:10:39 > 0:10:40And it was.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46And the book has been a huge success, so that's all good,

0:10:46 > 0:10:48but I have to say,

0:10:48 > 0:10:51not everyone has been that thrilled by the publication of the book.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55President Trump made a rare foray into the world of Twitter...

0:10:58 > 0:11:00He tweeted about your book.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- And you had a very good reply, I felt.- Yes, I did. Right.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Cos are you tempted to ignore his tweets?

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Well, you know, I ignore a lot of them

0:11:16 > 0:11:18because there are so many.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21You could not respond to all of them.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23This one in particular I said,

0:11:23 > 0:11:27"Well, I've also written a children's book that you may find..."

0:11:27 > 0:11:29We've got your tweet here, yeah.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32CHEERING

0:11:32 > 0:11:33"Buy this one"!

0:11:35 > 0:11:36Did he take you up on your offer?

0:11:36 > 0:11:39I don't know, I haven't heard back yet.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41But I do respond

0:11:41 > 0:11:48when I think, you know, what he has said is hurtful and unfair

0:11:48 > 0:11:50and really causing problems for people,

0:11:50 > 0:11:53and I sometimes, but rarely, tweet at him.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56So we had this horrible hurricane in Puerto Rico,

0:11:56 > 0:12:00which is a part of the United States and 3.5 million people live there,

0:12:00 > 0:12:02and nothing was happening.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04So I did tweet at him and at the Defence Department

0:12:04 > 0:12:08basically to say, "Send the Navy and send the hospital ship,"

0:12:08 > 0:12:12and within a day or two or three, they actually did it, so...

0:12:12 > 0:12:15But has he set the agenda?

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Presumably you didn't tweet that much before. He's...

0:12:18 > 0:12:20He's brought the world to Twitter

0:12:20 > 0:12:23to try and explain complex things in just a few words.

0:12:23 > 0:12:30Well, he has tweeted for a while, but you're right that he tries to...

0:12:30 > 0:12:34..talk about issues that are very complex.

0:12:34 > 0:12:40He uses it to mostly attack people, insult, criticise people.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44The most dangerous thing he does is conduct diplomacy on Twitter.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47So, he's trading insults with Kim Jong Un,

0:12:47 > 0:12:50which is, like, just catnip for Kim Jong Un.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54He loves that, the idea that he is in a Twitter insult-fest

0:12:54 > 0:12:56with the President of the United States.

0:12:56 > 0:13:01So, he does things that are truly not only upsetting

0:13:01 > 0:13:03but kind of inexplicable,

0:13:03 > 0:13:05and some of it just goes unanswered

0:13:05 > 0:13:09and others I answer and many, many people do as well.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Let's go back into the campaign,

0:13:11 > 0:13:13because one of the bits I really enjoyed

0:13:13 > 0:13:15was talking about the debates,

0:13:15 > 0:13:18because normally you prep for a debate

0:13:18 > 0:13:20because it's going to be to and fro with arguments,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23- but he was playing just a different game.- That's right.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Here's what I say in the book, cos I think it's really important.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30If you follow politics, and you're interested,

0:13:30 > 0:13:35watch like a debate or a presentation or a rally

0:13:35 > 0:13:36with the sound off.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38And so if you watched with the sound off,

0:13:38 > 0:13:40you didn't pay attention to what he was saying,

0:13:40 > 0:13:45cos much of it was untrue and really just silly...

0:13:47 > 0:13:50..he, you know, he was very dominant.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Very, you know, very big.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Filling the stage, gesturing and facial expressions.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59If you didn't know what he was saying, you would think,

0:13:59 > 0:14:03'Wow,' you know, 'Boy, he's out there really giving it to her.'

0:14:03 > 0:14:06So you really have to understand

0:14:06 > 0:14:09both what you're trying to say and accomplish

0:14:09 > 0:14:11and how to match that.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15Now, the second debate was the one I really highlight in the book.

0:14:15 > 0:14:19- Yes, the looming one. - He loomed over me.- There he is.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22And it was all designed to get into my head.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- Did you know he was there? - Yes, of course I did.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26I mean, I think any woman would know that somebody was looming...

0:14:26 > 0:14:31APPLAUSE

0:14:31 > 0:14:35Yeah. So, I knew it and I...

0:14:35 > 0:14:37I was debating in my head

0:14:37 > 0:14:40and I kind of share this with the readers,

0:14:40 > 0:14:45look, I practise not getting flustered, not getting thrown off,

0:14:45 > 0:14:47being calm and composed,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49which I think a president should be.

0:14:49 > 0:14:55Not impulsive and not trying to dominate every encounter,

0:14:55 > 0:14:57but maybe I should have turned around and said,

0:14:57 > 0:14:59"You're not going to intimidate me

0:14:59 > 0:15:02"like you try to intimidate women. Back off, you creep."

0:15:02 > 0:15:06- Maybe I should have said that. - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:08 > 0:15:12It's...it's a real lesson.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16It's kind of a, you know, it's a thought lesson for women

0:15:16 > 0:15:19in public life or the private sector.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22When you find yourself in these positions

0:15:22 > 0:15:25where a male co-worker, a boss, a client

0:15:25 > 0:15:31is, you know, really pushing you, trying to dominate you,

0:15:31 > 0:15:36our usual response is to just hold ourselves together

0:15:36 > 0:15:37and not respond,

0:15:37 > 0:15:42because if you're too hot they accuse you of being angry,

0:15:42 > 0:15:46if you're kind of apologetic, like, "Please, don't do that to me,"

0:15:46 > 0:15:47you're accused of being weak.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51It's really hard to get right in the sweet spot

0:15:51 > 0:15:53of being strong and effective

0:15:53 > 0:15:57without creating additional blowback.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00"She was so angry, she was shrill."

0:16:00 > 0:16:05You know, those are the words meant to keep women in their place,

0:16:05 > 0:16:06and I'm not putting up with it any more.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10I'm going to do everything I can to speak up and speak out about it.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:16:14 > 0:16:16And I think...

0:16:16 > 0:16:20Everyone who heard your concession speech,

0:16:20 > 0:16:25that bit at the end was so moving, because, you know,

0:16:25 > 0:16:28because your story should be an inspiring story to women

0:16:28 > 0:16:29but I'm sure a lot of women were thinking,

0:16:29 > 0:16:32- "God, I'm never going to do that!" - Yeah, I agree.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34So what you said to the young girls of America

0:16:34 > 0:16:36- I thought was really lovely.- Yeah.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38Well, I have this really strong belief

0:16:38 > 0:16:40that the best way to get sexism out of politics

0:16:40 > 0:16:42is to get more women into politics,

0:16:42 > 0:16:46and make it clear that women come in all sizes and shapes

0:16:46 > 0:16:50and hair styles and voice tenor and everything else,

0:16:50 > 0:16:52and so we can't just be pigeonholed.

0:16:52 > 0:16:57But I was particularly concerned about the impact my loss would have

0:16:57 > 0:16:59on girls and young women.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02So, I basically said don't let anyone tell you

0:17:02 > 0:17:06that your voice is not powerful and valuable,

0:17:06 > 0:17:08- you know?- And I think, very sweetly, the message has got through,

0:17:08 > 0:17:11cos there is a very specific phenomenon

0:17:11 > 0:17:13happening at your book signings now,

0:17:13 > 0:17:16and these are the little girls showing up in pantsuits.

0:17:16 > 0:17:17AUDIENCE: Aw-w!

0:17:17 > 0:17:19There's been a lot of this, hasn't there?

0:17:19 > 0:17:22There has been so much of it and that little girl in particular,

0:17:22 > 0:17:27whose name I recall as Grace, has on a little fake pearl necklace

0:17:27 > 0:17:34and, you know, they sometimes come in Wonder Woman costumes as well.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38But I'm trying to send a very strong message to parents

0:17:38 > 0:17:41and grandparents and everyone who cares about children

0:17:41 > 0:17:44that build confidence, and the right kind of confidence,

0:17:44 > 0:17:46in both your sons and your daughters.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48And when it comes to girls, you know,

0:17:48 > 0:17:51really help build that sense of self-esteem

0:17:51 > 0:17:56and the idea that she is valuable, that her voice is powerful,

0:17:56 > 0:17:58that she deserves to be listened to,

0:17:58 > 0:18:03because it's got to start early if we're going to try to reach

0:18:03 > 0:18:06the kind of equal rights and treatment

0:18:06 > 0:18:08that I think we should be aiming for.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11So, that's my mission and I'm going right at it.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15- Well, you won't be going that fast in fairness.- No, not yet!

0:18:15 > 0:18:17We wish you well with the healing.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20It's been such a privilege to spend time with you. Thank you.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22Hillary Rodham Clinton, ladies and gentlemen.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24- CHEERING - Thank you all.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30What a treat. Hillary Clinton, there.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33And we in fact recorded that earlier,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36and if you'd like to see more of our conversation,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40the full interview will be available on iPlayer from tomorrow night.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43All right, let's meet my next guest,

0:18:43 > 0:18:45he is one of the country's top comics.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48Always a pleasure to welcome. Jack Whitehall, everybody.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51CHEERING

0:18:51 > 0:18:54Hello, hi, lovely to see you.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57This Scottish action hero starred in Olympus Has Fallen

0:18:57 > 0:18:59and is back saving the world in Geostorm.

0:18:59 > 0:19:00It's Gerard Butler.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03CHEERING

0:19:05 > 0:19:07- Look at you!- How are you? - I'm really well.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Down, down.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11And he's played a fly, he's fought dinosaurs

0:19:11 > 0:19:13and even saved the planet from aliens,

0:19:13 > 0:19:15now, he faces off against Thor himself.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Please welcome the great Jeff Goldblum!

0:19:17 > 0:19:20CHEERING

0:19:23 > 0:19:27CHEERING DROWNS SPEECH

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Look at you, so shiny. Sit, sit.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Sit, boys, sit.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36- Sit, boys, sit.- Yes, yes! - Good guests. Good guests.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Shake Jack's hand.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42- He's still waiting for a handshake. - Oh, my God in heaven. I'm so sorry.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44- It's fine, it's fine. - Left him hanging.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Hillary didn't even say hello to me.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Oh! Oh!

0:19:49 > 0:19:51I know, you missed the Hillary. Sorry about that.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53I would love to have seen Hillary.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55Well, you can if you watch telly.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59I'll watch her. I met her once.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01- Oh, yes?- I did.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02When did I?

0:20:02 > 0:20:05You know, we were at some...

0:20:05 > 0:20:07at some event, but just small.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10I think maybe a fundraiser at somebody's house.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12And, you know, sure enough

0:20:12 > 0:20:16we find ourselves eating at a buffet, a little thing.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19- Yes, of course.- And it was just she and I.

0:20:19 > 0:20:24I said, "Jeez, I'm so happy to meet you. I admire you so much."

0:20:24 > 0:20:26This was a while ago. Anyway, she was very nice.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28That's my story. What a story!

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Drive safely, that's our show.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35Yeah, work on that.

0:20:35 > 0:20:40I saved that for this special moment.

0:20:40 > 0:20:41But now, the weird thing is poor old Hillary

0:20:41 > 0:20:44isn't the only accident prone person this week.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Gerard Butler, you...

0:20:45 > 0:20:47What did you do? You fell off your motorbike?

0:20:47 > 0:20:50You were driven off your motorbike? You crashed? What happened?

0:20:50 > 0:20:54I fell off a motorbike? I do not fall off motorbikes, Graham!

0:20:54 > 0:20:58No, it was actually about two weeks ago now, but I was in LA

0:20:58 > 0:21:01and I was on my bike and this woman went from a parked position

0:21:01 > 0:21:04to basically trying to do a U-turn and I went right into her

0:21:04 > 0:21:06and I didn't really have much time to slow...

0:21:06 > 0:21:09- Yeah, thank you for the...- Yeah, sorry, I was just imagining it.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11- It's like London Has Fallen. - Pretty much.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13It was like London Has Fallen! And I went about...

0:21:13 > 0:21:16There was a bunch of people just happened to be there,

0:21:16 > 0:21:17they were in a staff meeting looking out

0:21:17 > 0:21:19and people unloading a truck,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21so apparently I went about 30 feet through the air,

0:21:21 > 0:21:22did a somersault and smacked down.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25And I jumped right up cos I'm like, "Remember who you are,

0:21:25 > 0:21:27"you've got to keep it together," and the second I jumped up

0:21:27 > 0:21:29I went, "Oh, fuck."

0:21:29 > 0:21:30And I knew I'd done something.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33I actually fractured five bones in my right foot.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35I did in both my knees.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39But I pull the helmet off and it's like, "Oh, shit, it's him."

0:21:39 > 0:21:42And then this guy takes me over and goes, "You banged your head,"

0:21:42 > 0:21:44and he sits me down and he's rubbing my head and he goes,

0:21:44 > 0:21:47"OK, what's your name?" I went, "It's Gerry Butler,"

0:21:47 > 0:21:49and this guy behind him's like, "I knew it, I told you!"

0:21:50 > 0:21:52And he's like, "What day is it?"

0:21:52 > 0:21:55I'm going, "I didn't know what day it was before the crash!"

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Um...

0:21:58 > 0:22:00But anyway, it's been a bit of an inopportune time

0:22:00 > 0:22:02because I been filming a bunch

0:22:02 > 0:22:03and on this press tour,

0:22:03 > 0:22:06so like going from crutches onto talk shows and...

0:22:06 > 0:22:09But you look incredibly well for a man who fell off his motorbike.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13- I'm an animal, that's why.- Yes! - When did you do that?

0:22:13 > 0:22:15- How long ago did you do that? - About 12 days ago.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17- 12 days ago.- That's impossible! And your broken...

0:22:17 > 0:22:22Five fractures and two micro fractures, a torn meniscus...

0:22:22 > 0:22:25- Oh, my God. - Sprained...MCL, is it?

0:22:25 > 0:22:28And also this got burned right through the bone.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Actually, it was pretty hefty.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32I split a nail playing squash the other day.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34LAUGHTER

0:22:34 > 0:22:37You had a car crash actually. You had a car crash as well.

0:22:37 > 0:22:38I had a car...

0:22:38 > 0:22:41I did actually have a car crash about four or five years ago.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43- Did you? I didn't know that. - It was awful,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45it was like a proper near death experience,

0:22:45 > 0:22:47but the worst thing was you learn so much about yourself,

0:22:47 > 0:22:49because I mean I literally cheated death

0:22:49 > 0:22:52and I remember that my DVD was out that week and I thought,

0:22:52 > 0:22:55"If I had died, I would have shifted so many more copies of that."

0:22:55 > 0:22:58LAUGHTER

0:22:59 > 0:23:01Oh, dear. Jeff Goldblum, you are here

0:23:01 > 0:23:04to tell us about the latest Thor movie.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07Thor Ragnar...Ragnarok.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09- Ragnarok.- Ragnarok.- Yeah.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13I lost confidence then. I thought I knew how to say it

0:23:13 > 0:23:15but Thor Ragnarok. Ragnarok! Ragnarok, yeah.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18- Ragnarok, yeah.- It's out next Tuesday, 24 October.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21Now, I've seen it, it's great, you haven't.

0:23:21 > 0:23:26You can probably guess, Jeff isn't Thor, so who are you?

0:23:26 > 0:23:28I am...

0:23:28 > 0:23:31I'm the Grandmaster. That's the name of my character.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34If you've read the comic books, you know,

0:23:34 > 0:23:38over the last couple of decades, he's been in the comic books.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40He was...

0:23:40 > 0:23:42He came about shortly after the Big Bang

0:23:42 > 0:23:44four billion, you know, something years ago

0:23:44 > 0:23:45along with his brother,

0:23:45 > 0:23:48played by Benicio del Toro in another movie, the Collector.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51Did you see another movie with Benicio? That's my brother.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54And, you know, I'm immortal, this character,

0:23:54 > 0:23:56and I have all superpowers

0:23:56 > 0:23:59that you've ever imagined anybody to have,

0:23:59 > 0:24:01but now I run this planet called Sakaar.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04It's a very fun planet and I just like to play games

0:24:04 > 0:24:07and pit people against each other for combat, stuff like that.

0:24:07 > 0:24:08I'm in, I'm sold.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10It sounds like he's making it up,

0:24:10 > 0:24:13- but that is in the movie. - You saw it.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15- Didn't you like that?- I really liked it.- I got a kick out of it.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19And Taika Waititi, the great director, he's all over that.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22If you know him, he's a comic treasure.

0:24:22 > 0:24:23Yeah, because we had Sam Neill on

0:24:23 > 0:24:25talking about Hunt For The Wilderpeople.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28He did that and Boy and What We Do In The Shadows.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30- Did you see that? - CHEERING

0:24:30 > 0:24:33All improvised, funny vampire movie.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35And the cast, you know,

0:24:35 > 0:24:40the cast is Sir Anthony Hopkins, Chris Hemsworth of course is Thor,

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Tom Hiddleston's brilliant

0:24:43 > 0:24:45and we improvised a lot of it.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47And it feels like an experimental thing.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51They build into it an extra shooting period after,

0:24:51 > 0:24:53so they see it and then they rewrite it

0:24:53 > 0:24:55and they put it together.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58It's done for an actorly, beautiful creative experience.

0:24:58 > 0:24:59Well, let's see a clip.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01This is you, essentially you've captured Thor

0:25:01 > 0:25:03and you're trying to figure out what to do with him.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05- That's correct.- Yeah.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08Time works real different around these parts.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11On any other world, I'd be like millions of years old

0:25:11 > 0:25:12but here on Sakaar...

0:25:18 > 0:25:22In any case, you know this... You call yourself Lord of Thunder.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25God of Thunder. Tell him.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27I have never met this man in my life.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29- He's my brother!- Adopted.

0:25:29 > 0:25:30Is he any kind of a fighter?

0:25:30 > 0:25:32Take this thing out of my neck and I'll show you.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34Aw-w, listen to that, he's threatening me!

0:25:34 > 0:25:36Hey, Sparkles, here's the deal,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39if you want to get back to Assplace, Assberg...

0:25:39 > 0:25:43- Asgard!- ..any contender who defeats my champion,

0:25:43 > 0:25:45their freedom they shall win.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Fine, then point me in the direction of whoever's arse I have to kick.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51That's what I call contender!

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Direction would be this way, Lord.

0:25:54 > 0:25:55Ah! Loki!

0:25:59 > 0:26:03Chris, the great Chris Hemsworth.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07Not only athletic but comically very gifted, a very wonderful actor.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10- And Tom Hiddleston, you know, he did Hamlet here recently.- Yes, he did.

0:26:10 > 0:26:11Did you see it?

0:26:11 > 0:26:14Of course not! LAUGHTER

0:26:14 > 0:26:16He's fantastic. He does impressions.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20- Oh, I saw him do an impression with Robert De Niro here.- Oh, he did!

0:26:20 > 0:26:23- Yes.- Oh, it's great. I YouTube you all the time.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27SARCASTICALLY: What a night. Now, em...

0:26:27 > 0:26:30- That night, back then? - No, it was fun.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33Did he do the impression of Robert De Niro to Robert De Niro?

0:26:33 > 0:26:37- Yes, he did.- Was it scandalous or touchy or...?- It was...

0:26:37 > 0:26:40- It was an odd thing to do, I felt. Personally.- Oh, really.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42But if you enjoyed it, that's good!

0:26:42 > 0:26:44No, I mean, it was a very good impression.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47- I didn't do my Gerald Butler to Gerard Butler.- Not yet.

0:26:47 > 0:26:51- Not yet, the night is young! - Wait till you finish that tea!

0:26:51 > 0:26:53This is actually wine,

0:26:53 > 0:26:55because I knew the other guys were getting water

0:26:55 > 0:26:58so I said, "Maybe just pop the wine in a teacup so no-one knows,"

0:26:58 > 0:26:59but I said like a mug,

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I didn't mean like a tea cup and saucer so now I look like...

0:27:04 > 0:27:06It's just wine. Look, it's just white wine.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08- Now I've said it. - I thought it was herbal tea.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10- I was like that's pretty together of you.- Yeah,

0:27:10 > 0:27:12I should've said herbal tea and could have got away with it.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14It is, it's mint tea.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16No, but that makes it look like you've got a problem

0:27:16 > 0:27:18if you're drinking white wine out of a teacup.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20Like, "No-one must know."

0:27:20 > 0:27:23Yeah, but normally when you go on chat shows, the host doesn't drink

0:27:23 > 0:27:26and so I forget and then you come on here and you're like...

0:27:27 > 0:27:30You'll be drinking... How much do you consume per show of that?

0:27:30 > 0:27:34- No, very little.- OK.- Very little.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37All of those vases were full of white wine

0:27:37 > 0:27:39at the beginning of the Hillary Clinton interview.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42I've never got through a case. I mean never.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45Now, Jeff, we must ask, we must ask...

0:27:45 > 0:27:50No, are we allowed to say...? This is weird.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Are we allowed to say what age you are going to be

0:27:52 > 0:27:53at your next birthday?

0:27:53 > 0:27:56Oh, yeah, this weekend I turn 65.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58CHEERING Wow!

0:27:58 > 0:28:03- How annoying is that?- Amazing.- 65?! - How annoying is that?

0:28:05 > 0:28:09- It's insane.- Well...- What did you get from touching his face?

0:28:09 > 0:28:11It's all so tight.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14Sometimes you touch it and it falls apart, but that is...

0:28:14 > 0:28:17"Because I've touched a lot of 65-year-old's faces and hands,

0:28:17 > 0:28:21- "it's a thing I do." - That is so weird!

0:28:21 > 0:28:25And is there a dreary secret or is it just genes?

0:28:25 > 0:28:28Well, it's no secret, there's nothing happening here.

0:28:28 > 0:28:29I'm coming and going very quickly.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33You know, I'll be gone very soon, I'm sure. But I do...

0:28:33 > 0:28:35- I do... - LAUGHTER

0:28:35 > 0:28:38I do live a, you know... I'm disciplined.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41I do my little workout, such as it is.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44I won't bother you with what that is

0:28:44 > 0:28:46but I do a couple of things.

0:28:46 > 0:28:48But I do it daily.

0:28:48 > 0:28:53I get some sleep and I try to eat the right way.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57Oh, my God, I'm going to be dead in a year. Listen to this!

0:28:57 > 0:29:00- What?! I don't do any of those things!- No.

0:29:00 > 0:29:04- Oh, you work out.- But look at you. - You lift heavy things.- Like...?

0:29:04 > 0:29:05But my workouts...

0:29:05 > 0:29:07Actually, when I had the bike crash,

0:29:07 > 0:29:09I was already wearing neoprene kneepads

0:29:09 > 0:29:11cos I had screwed my knee working out.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14When I work out, often it's to train to get big.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17Like, I just put on 30 lbs, then you lose it and then you put it on,

0:29:17 > 0:29:19so normally it's a pretty staunch workout

0:29:19 > 0:29:21that doesn't do you many favours.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23It's not really about longevity.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26- It's about, "Let's go, baby."- Yeah.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29I know exactly what you're talking about, and I always have that.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33It's the balancing around that I find hard.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36LAUGHTER

0:29:36 > 0:29:37Right, you lot can shut up.

0:29:37 > 0:29:40But the good thing is, there is good news,

0:29:40 > 0:29:42if you're looking at Jeff thinking,

0:29:42 > 0:29:44"This is so wrong that he looks like this,"

0:29:44 > 0:29:47but one part of ageing has affected you -

0:29:47 > 0:29:51the additional grooming that is required.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55I like to groom, yeah. Well, are you...? You must be already.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58- Please, all over.- Well, yes, you get...

0:29:58 > 0:30:01- Have you gotten a little?- No!

0:30:01 > 0:30:04No, really? Well, you're young, a very young, young man.

0:30:04 > 0:30:05But I like to take a tweezer. What do you do?

0:30:05 > 0:30:09I like to take a tweezer and get the odd hair out of here.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11Oh, I need a Flymo. It's just like...

0:30:11 > 0:30:15Well, I don't want to shave it. You know, that's an option.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19I like to get them out at the root. It's like weeding.

0:30:19 > 0:30:20The thrill, the delight of weeding,

0:30:20 > 0:30:22cos you get that thing and you...

0:30:22 > 0:30:25You're clean as a whistle, look at that.

0:30:25 > 0:30:27..and you get them out.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29It's nice if you can, "I got it! I got it."

0:30:29 > 0:30:32So, there's that and then there's nose. The nose issue.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35- I have had a bit of that.- Have you? What's your...? May I ask?

0:30:35 > 0:30:38It's a trivial and mundane and not interesting thing,

0:30:38 > 0:30:40but may I ask you, because I am interested in it?

0:30:40 > 0:30:42It's like you would imagine I do, which is...

0:30:44 > 0:30:47- You rip them out by hand?! - I rip them out by hand.- Oh, my gosh.

0:30:47 > 0:30:51- You're too young, you don't have them.- I don't have pubes yet.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54One day!

0:30:56 > 0:30:59But you don't pluck them out, you have quite an odd technique.

0:30:59 > 0:31:01I don't pluck them out, nobody plucks them.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04- You're not serious about that... - I am serious about that!

0:31:04 > 0:31:06- Do you?- That's horrible, that's not the right idea!

0:31:06 > 0:31:09- I mean, I guess...- He does it when he's on his bike and then...

0:31:09 > 0:31:10It's personal.

0:31:10 > 0:31:13I had, for a second, I had somebody'd given me,

0:31:13 > 0:31:15- cos you can buy one of those "zzzzz".- Yeah, I have one of those.

0:31:15 > 0:31:19- You do?- Yeah.- You know those things? It's meant to...

0:31:19 > 0:31:20It's kind of a rotary thing and you go, "zzz",

0:31:20 > 0:31:23and you go like... I don't trust it.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26And I am much, much better with a pair of scissors.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28I take a nice pair of scissors...

0:31:28 > 0:31:30Well, not to get too detailed, but here,

0:31:30 > 0:31:34I take my razor, I take my Gillette II,

0:31:34 > 0:31:38this part right here, I razor that very carefully...

0:31:38 > 0:31:41- AUDIENCE GASPS - ..cos you can get it very close.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45And then there's something going on here and all round there

0:31:45 > 0:31:51and I get a scissor and there I am, and I know just what to do.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54- And this happens now about once a week, I'd say.- Once a week?

0:31:54 > 0:32:00Yes, I guess I'm living, you know.

0:32:00 > 0:32:01Things are happening.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04Well, it looks good on you. It looks good on you.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06I did it recently, so it's quite good, isn't it?

0:32:06 > 0:32:09Yeah, no, it's beautiful. Beautiful. Jeff Goldblum, beautiful man.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12Let's talk about Gerard Butler's new film.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15Ladies and gentlemen, you are all safe,

0:32:15 > 0:32:19Gerard is back protecting us from, this time, the weather.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23- Geostorm...- It does sound pretty banal.- Geostorm opens tonight.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26And this, I mean, it couldn't be more timely, this film,

0:32:26 > 0:32:31since the weather is, you know, it's quite inclement at the moment.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34Ophelia's just been. Who's it at the moment? Is it Bob?

0:32:34 > 0:32:36- Brian!- Brian!- Brian, Brian.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Storm Brian, Hurricane Ophelia.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41My brother's called Brian and he's just a straight pain in the ass.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45- No...- But it is incredibly timely, this movie.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47That was the purpose of the movie,

0:32:47 > 0:32:49was Dean Devlin's daughter one day said to him,

0:32:49 > 0:32:52"Dad, can't we build a machine that'll stop global warming?"

0:32:52 > 0:32:55Which gave him this idea of what if you did build something?

0:32:55 > 0:32:59And, of course, at the beginning of the movie,

0:32:59 > 0:33:03it's this kind of montage of a quick time version

0:33:03 > 0:33:05of what global warming really brought humanity,

0:33:05 > 0:33:08and it's kind of a goose bump moment, seeing this all happen,

0:33:08 > 0:33:11cos it's not so far away from where we really are.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14But, of course, in the movie then I play a scientist

0:33:14 > 0:33:16who builds this space station,

0:33:16 > 0:33:18a system of satellites that can control the environment

0:33:18 > 0:33:20and that's where the fun begins, though,

0:33:20 > 0:33:23because when that thing malfunctions,

0:33:23 > 0:33:25you realise if this was to go wrong

0:33:25 > 0:33:28then we are all, you know, basically we're in a lot of trouble.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31But Gerard's there, you're OK.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34- You've got a sexy, action-filled scientist.- Scientist?- Scientist.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37- I love scientists. I love...- Well, you've played loads of scientists.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39I have, here and there.

0:33:39 > 0:33:43- You should have been playing this role actually.- No, no.- Scientist?

0:33:43 > 0:33:45But like you do a bit of kicking ass as well?

0:33:45 > 0:33:47There's a little bit of kick ass in there.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49- A PhD in kicking ass.- Yes.

0:33:49 > 0:33:54Just because you're smart it doesn't mean you're not cool and virile.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58- And Dean Devlin, you say? - Yeah, you worked with him.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01The hell you say, yeah, I love that man. What a delightful man he is.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04And speaking of his daughters, he's got a lovely family.

0:34:04 > 0:34:07No, I've worked with him. He's a great, great man.

0:34:07 > 0:34:11- Was he Independence Day? - He produced Independence Day, yeah..

0:34:11 > 0:34:15Well, this one's called Geostorm. Here's a taste of what to expect.

0:34:15 > 0:34:16It's epic.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19We built this system of satellites to stop natural disasters.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24Someone is using it to create them.

0:34:27 > 0:34:28There's the potential for

0:34:28 > 0:34:31catastrophic weather events on a global scale.

0:34:31 > 0:34:32A geostorm.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47- It's worse than we thought.- Yeah, I think we've established that.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49Someone has turned the system into a weapon.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53They're trying to change the map of the world.

0:34:59 > 0:35:00Dear God...

0:35:01 > 0:35:03Very exciting.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08Now...

0:35:08 > 0:35:10Action heroes, action heroes, ladies and gentlemen,

0:35:10 > 0:35:12not just one on the couch.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14Well, not two, because you've been an action hero.

0:35:14 > 0:35:19But Jack Whitehall, you are now in a show called Bounty Hunters.

0:35:19 > 0:35:22It starts on Sky One on 25 October.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24I mean, this is big.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27It's you and an Oscar nominee, Rosie Perez.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30Oscar nominee Rosie Perez and TV Choice Award nominee...

0:35:32 > 0:35:34..me.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37And, yeah, it's an action comedy thriller.

0:35:37 > 0:35:41I wrote it with my collaborator, Freddy Syborn,

0:35:41 > 0:35:44and it's inspired by all those '80s films that I loved

0:35:44 > 0:35:47like Midnight Run and Lethal Weapon and things like that.

0:35:47 > 0:35:48So it's my homage to those types of films.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50We've got a very exciting look.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52This is a sort of action clip, so tell us about...

0:35:52 > 0:35:56Before we see the clip, having seen the other two clips...

0:35:57 > 0:35:58You're going to watch this

0:35:58 > 0:36:01and you're going to see that we had a slightly smaller budget.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05- Just ever so slightly. - Oh, excuses, excuses.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08- LAUGHTER - This...- This is a car chase.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11It's a car chase, but in a gee-whiz electric car.

0:36:11 > 0:36:12LAUGHTER

0:36:12 > 0:36:15- Cos that's all we could afford. - Let's take a look.- Brilliant.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17HE TOOTS HORN

0:36:17 > 0:36:19Out the way, out the way.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22- Stop indicating!- I'm sorry, it's a force of habit.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24- Van! Van! - THEY SCREAM

0:36:24 > 0:36:25CAR SKIDS

0:36:27 > 0:36:28- I'm going to be sick. - Don't you dare!

0:36:28 > 0:36:31- WARNING TONE - Bugger, we're running out of battery.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33Come on!

0:36:33 > 0:36:35- Sidewalk!- What?- Sidewalk!

0:36:37 > 0:36:39Pavement. If you're going to give me directions,

0:36:39 > 0:36:42- you will have to do so in the Queen's English.- Shut up. Move!

0:36:42 > 0:36:44Excuse me! Sorry!

0:36:44 > 0:36:46- CAR HORN - Sorry!

0:36:46 > 0:36:49- Can you go faster? - It doesn't go any faster.

0:36:52 > 0:36:54- Go, go, go!- We're not going to fit.

0:36:55 > 0:36:56HE YELPS

0:36:56 > 0:36:59LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE

0:36:59 > 0:37:01Oh, my God.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06- Nerve-racking!- I know! - I was terrified.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08THEY LAUGH

0:37:09 > 0:37:11- Ow! - LAUGHTER

0:37:11 > 0:37:14- Sorry, I have a lot of force.- That's very funny.

0:37:14 > 0:37:18That is funny, but you had more than one of the... What is it?

0:37:18 > 0:37:20- A gee-whiz?- The gee-whiz!

0:37:20 > 0:37:23We had to have two, cos it only had enough battery

0:37:23 > 0:37:26- to drive for 15 minutes! - LAUGHTER

0:37:26 > 0:37:28So we kept having to swap in the cars!

0:37:28 > 0:37:31And it genuinely only does 40mph.

0:37:31 > 0:37:33But I want to be an action star. Like, that is...

0:37:33 > 0:37:36I loved action films... I would love...

0:37:36 > 0:37:39Like, I love London Has Fallen and Olympus Has Fallen

0:37:39 > 0:37:41and I'd love to do one of them.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44- You're in, we're about to make another one.- Are we?

0:37:44 > 0:37:47- Is it Angels?- Yeah, but you have to drive at more than 3mph.

0:37:47 > 0:37:48LAUGHTER

0:37:48 > 0:37:51I write, like, post-Brexit disaster film...

0:37:51 > 0:37:52LAUGHTER

0:37:52 > 0:37:54No...

0:37:54 > 0:37:56It's called The Pound Has Fallen....

0:37:56 > 0:37:58LAUGHTER

0:37:58 > 0:38:01- It's me and Gerard... - CHEERING AND WHISTLING

0:38:04 > 0:38:06They didn't clap when I rehearsed this in front of the mirror!

0:38:06 > 0:38:09It's me and you and we play two data analysts going around

0:38:09 > 0:38:12the city, trying to re-instill confidence in British industry.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15One of us is the kind of nerdy, bookish former accountant.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17- That's me.- You, yeah. - LAUGHTER

0:38:19 > 0:38:23And I'm the kind of kick down doors, ask questions later tough cop.

0:38:23 > 0:38:27- Yeah.- With a slightly dodgy Scottish accent. That's me.

0:38:27 > 0:38:31- And then we just go around... - That would be me, too!- Good pitch.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34Yeah, that's how films get made.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37- Yeah.- Either that or, erm, 301. - LAUGHTER

0:38:37 > 0:38:40Just 300, but I'm there to lighten the mood.

0:38:40 > 0:38:42LAUGHTER

0:38:42 > 0:38:45You heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen.

0:38:45 > 0:38:47It's happening.

0:38:47 > 0:38:49Now, Jack Whitehall hasn't given up stand-up.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52You've got a new stand-up special on... Netflix.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55It starts streaming from next Tuesday.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58That sounds like an illness. "It starts streaming next Tuesday".

0:38:58 > 0:39:01Like, it'll never stop screaming. Has it stopped streaming?

0:39:01 > 0:39:05- No, it's still streaming. - Still streaming.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08No, it's called At Large and it's At Large, because this is,

0:39:08 > 0:39:10cos you think stand-up shows, it's just a man

0:39:10 > 0:39:14and a microphone, but... You've got big production values.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16Yeah, I like putting on a show. I like bells and whistles.

0:39:16 > 0:39:20They say you can't glitter a turd, I proved them wrong.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23It has a big musical number at the end. I try to...

0:39:23 > 0:39:26I spoke about, on this show, how I auditioned for...

0:39:26 > 0:39:28Well, I didn't audition. I was in Frozen and then got cut.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31- Yeah.- Yeah, it really hurts.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34- Let it go, I won't. - LAUGHTER

0:39:34 > 0:39:37So, in this show, I put some of those wrongs right

0:39:37 > 0:39:39and the end of the show is me trying to recreate

0:39:39 > 0:39:41a one-man version of Frozen on the stage.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44- That sounds good!- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47- So stick around till the end! - LAUGHTER

0:39:47 > 0:39:49And... Because, you know, you're very successful stand-up

0:39:49 > 0:39:51and you're working at a certain level,

0:39:51 > 0:39:55you think every gig will work, but you still have...

0:39:55 > 0:39:56more difficult gigs.

0:39:56 > 0:40:00Where was the Charles and Camilla one? Was that at Buckingham Palace?

0:40:00 > 0:40:03Er, it was at Kensington Palace, and it was this weird gig

0:40:03 > 0:40:06that they do once a year for all the staff of Kensington Palace,

0:40:06 > 0:40:08and I know some other people that have done this show

0:40:08 > 0:40:10and they have a magician one year and a musician,

0:40:10 > 0:40:14a comedian, and I went and I did this show at Kensington Palace.

0:40:14 > 0:40:16And it was the staff and then Charles

0:40:16 > 0:40:21and Camilla in the front row literally sat in thrones.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24I mean, it was like the closest it could be

0:40:24 > 0:40:26- to being the court jester... - LAUGHTER

0:40:26 > 0:40:29..and I went on stage and it was...

0:40:29 > 0:40:31It was horrendous. I died.

0:40:31 > 0:40:32And I was trying to, like,

0:40:32 > 0:40:35I remember Prince Harry was out in Afghanistan at the time,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37so I was like, I was like,

0:40:37 > 0:40:40I just want to say, Prince Harry out in Afghanistan,

0:40:40 > 0:40:42that's so brave of him.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44- A ginger in that heat! - LAUGHTER

0:40:46 > 0:40:48I'm glad you laughed, cos on the night

0:40:48 > 0:40:50that went down like a dead corgi!

0:40:50 > 0:40:51LAUGHTER

0:40:51 > 0:40:54It was the worst death I've ever had. And then afterwards,

0:40:54 > 0:40:57the one little bone that he threw me as I met Charles afterwards

0:40:57 > 0:40:59and he just said,

0:40:59 > 0:41:01"You were a lot better than the contortionist

0:41:01 > 0:41:04- "that we had last year." - LAUGHTER

0:41:04 > 0:41:08And then, amazing, to think of the year before

0:41:08 > 0:41:10where Charles and Camilla were sat there in their thrones

0:41:10 > 0:41:13as a guy climbed through a tennis racket.

0:41:13 > 0:41:17- Hey, don't diss contortionists. - I don't.- Cos your, your wife,

0:41:17 > 0:41:21- is she a contortionist?- My dear wife is. Yes, she was in the Olympics...

0:41:21 > 0:41:23APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:41:23 > 0:41:25Have you guys met?

0:41:25 > 0:41:28About my wife? You're excited about my wife?

0:41:28 > 0:41:30No, that's... It's...

0:41:30 > 0:41:31Yeah, she's a contortionist.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35- Does anybody want a lozenge?- Yeah... - I'm good, thank you.

0:41:37 > 0:41:39She was in the Olympics...

0:41:39 > 0:41:42You're not getting one now, after the contortionist dig!

0:41:42 > 0:41:44She was a rhythmic gymnast,

0:41:44 > 0:41:48and she was in the Olympics in Sydney in 2000 for Canada.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50- There she is.- I remember this.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53There she is, that's my darling Emily.

0:41:53 > 0:41:57And then she expanded her training to include Cirque du Soleil,

0:41:57 > 0:42:00kind of aerial things, and she does... In fact,

0:42:00 > 0:42:03last year she doubled Emma Stone in La La Land.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06All that aerial dancing outside the scene in the planetarium,

0:42:06 > 0:42:09- you know, that's her, you know, dancing and twisting.- Oh, wow.

0:42:09 > 0:42:11- Yeah.- But can she do a contortionist?

0:42:11 > 0:42:14If you go on holidays, can she get in a suitcase, that kind of thing?

0:42:14 > 0:42:15LAUGHTER

0:42:15 > 0:42:17Well...

0:42:19 > 0:42:20Er...

0:42:20 > 0:42:22She was a magician's assistant.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26- Oh!- Yes, and so she packed with herself away in a box.

0:42:26 > 0:42:27That's right, she did that.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31And she's quite bendy, and our first, we met at the gymnasium,

0:42:31 > 0:42:34and I started a conversation.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37I saw her doing wonderful things, and I invited her...

0:42:37 > 0:42:39LAUGHTER

0:42:39 > 0:42:42And I invited her to this gig, I play jazz piano,

0:42:42 > 0:42:44and, erm, there we were.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47Oh, her name is Emily. I think, if you're watching,

0:42:47 > 0:42:50Gregory Porter, I bet you know this old standard called Emily.

0:42:50 > 0:42:51I sang to her,

0:42:51 > 0:42:53# Emily, Emily,

0:42:53 > 0:42:55# As the murmuring sound of me... #

0:42:55 > 0:42:57And then I said, "Hey, Emily, do you want to come up

0:42:57 > 0:43:00"and do contortion on our piano?" We had a grand piano.

0:43:00 > 0:43:01She said, "Yeah". She came up,

0:43:01 > 0:43:04I said, "What do we play, guys, what do we play?"

0:43:04 > 0:43:07They said "Oh, from Fabulous Baker Boys",

0:43:07 > 0:43:09remember when Michelle Pfeiffer does to Makin' Whoopee?

0:43:09 > 0:43:11HE HUMS THE RHYTHM

0:43:12 > 0:43:15And she got up and she did this amazing routine.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18That was two days after we met.

0:43:18 > 0:43:20- Wow.- We're still very much in love. Six years.

0:43:20 > 0:43:22Now we have two children, one two-and-a-half

0:43:22 > 0:43:24and one six-month old.

0:43:24 > 0:43:26- Wow.- Two boys, yeah. - How long ago was this?

0:43:26 > 0:43:28- APPLAUSE - Six years, we met.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30Six years ago? Oh, that's beautiful.

0:43:30 > 0:43:35Well, Jeff, excitingly, you are playing the piano for us tonight.

0:43:35 > 0:43:37I'm so excited about that. Gregory Porter...

0:43:37 > 0:43:40CHEERING

0:43:40 > 0:43:42Just to accompany the great Gregory Porter.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45- Has he been on before? - Yes, his voice is amazing.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47- I love his voice.- Oh, no, he's... I worship him.

0:43:47 > 0:43:51He's a fantastic, fantastic human being and musician...

0:43:51 > 0:43:54So, if you would like to approach that piano.

0:43:54 > 0:43:55I'd like very much.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58And, Jack, if you could warm up for the contortionist act.

0:43:58 > 0:44:00LAUGHTER

0:44:02 > 0:44:05- This is fake fruit. This is wooden fruit.- Yeah, it is. Don't...

0:44:07 > 0:44:09I hope that's on camera.

0:44:54 > 0:45:01# Is it only cos you're lonely, they have blamed you

0:45:04 > 0:45:11# For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?

0:45:13 > 0:45:20# Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?

0:45:23 > 0:45:27# Or is this your way to hide

0:45:28 > 0:45:31# A broken heart?

0:45:33 > 0:45:39# Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep

0:45:41 > 0:45:45# They just lie there

0:45:46 > 0:45:50# And they die there

0:45:51 > 0:45:59# Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?

0:46:03 > 0:46:08# Or just a cold and lonely

0:46:09 > 0:46:13# Lovely work of art?

0:48:30 > 0:48:31Gregory Porter!

0:48:31 > 0:48:34Have a seat. Sit, sit, sit. Sit, sit, sit.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36Sit, sit, sit, sit.

0:48:37 > 0:48:38Very good!

0:48:44 > 0:48:47- Before...- You made the right decision, that was the collaboration

0:48:47 > 0:48:49to have, cos I know we spoke about me and Hillary Clinton

0:48:49 > 0:48:50doing Gangnam Style.

0:48:52 > 0:48:53That was the one, that was the one.

0:48:53 > 0:48:54That was really special.

0:48:54 > 0:48:58There's a whole album, Nat King Cole & Me,

0:48:58 > 0:49:01and it is out next Friday.

0:49:01 > 0:49:03- Yes.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05There's a lot of this album, I notice. Look, it's all...

0:49:05 > 0:49:09- It's proper... Yeah, is it a two...album?- Yeah, yeah.

0:49:09 > 0:49:11This is the first time I'm seeing that, so...

0:49:11 > 0:49:14Oh, yeah, there's two records in there, I think, yeah.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16Yeah. LAUGHTER

0:49:16 > 0:49:18And yeah. You got the two.

0:49:18 > 0:49:22You know, normally this is fake, but that is real. Do you want...?

0:49:22 > 0:49:24You look like you want it, Jeff.

0:49:24 > 0:49:27Well, I can't take the only copy, but, you know, I would cherish that.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30He already gave me, backstage, a CD.

0:49:30 > 0:49:33Yeah, but I will give you... That's yours.

0:49:33 > 0:49:35Well, my gosh. Emily got me a record player.

0:49:35 > 0:49:39- I can play it on a record player. - LAUGHTER

0:49:39 > 0:49:42That's the way I first heard Nat's music,

0:49:42 > 0:49:45so, for me, on the record player is how it should be heard.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48No, because, you know, it's interesting cos everybody,

0:49:48 > 0:49:50you know, everybody loves Nat King Cole's voice.

0:49:50 > 0:49:52This is a very personal thing.

0:49:52 > 0:49:54That when you were a kid, he was really important to you.

0:49:54 > 0:49:56Yeah, I have to have a personal connection to the

0:49:56 > 0:49:58music in order to get into it.

0:49:58 > 0:50:04Yeah, my mother said I recorded a little song on a tape recorder

0:50:04 > 0:50:08at about six and played it for my mother when she came home from work.

0:50:08 > 0:50:10She said, "Boy, you sound like Nat King Cole."

0:50:10 > 0:50:14And I didn't know what that was, what condition that was.

0:50:14 > 0:50:16LAUGHTER

0:50:16 > 0:50:20So I found out it was a singer and went into her records

0:50:20 > 0:50:25and put on that music and that warm, rich sound was coming to me.

0:50:25 > 0:50:28These beautiful lyrics... "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off.

0:50:28 > 0:50:29"Start all over again.

0:50:29 > 0:50:31"Smile tho' your heart is aching.

0:50:31 > 0:50:34"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love

0:50:34 > 0:50:37"and to be loved in return." That's...

0:50:37 > 0:50:41..lessons to live by, life lessons, fatherly advice.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44I came to Nat's music in the absence of my father.

0:50:45 > 0:50:49And so that's what drew me really, really tight into that music.

0:50:49 > 0:50:51That's a beautiful, beautiful story.

0:50:51 > 0:50:56And I mean, to my untrained ear, Jeff Goldblum sounded very good.

0:50:56 > 0:50:58- Was he all right?- Yeah, he's cool.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01Jeff has his own style. And you know...

0:51:01 > 0:51:03LAUGHTER

0:51:05 > 0:51:08APPLAUSE

0:51:10 > 0:51:12Listen, when you look at this hat...

0:51:12 > 0:51:15..when you look at this hat, I have my own style.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17- You know?- Yes, you do.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19That is almost a requirement of jazz,

0:51:19 > 0:51:22so that was beautifully played. That was...

0:51:22 > 0:51:24Jeff Goldblum style, you know?

0:51:24 > 0:51:28This is my second time meeting Jeff. Can we change the subject?

0:51:28 > 0:51:33We met in the airport and, you know, Jeff is a...

0:51:33 > 0:51:35..gregarious guy, you know?

0:51:35 > 0:51:38He kind of bomb-rushes me.

0:51:38 > 0:51:42- Like boom and gets this close. - I did? I'm sorry.- Yeah.- I apologise.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44- He was like... - AS JEFF:- "Gregory, uh...

0:51:44 > 0:51:47"..Be Good. Yes.

0:51:47 > 0:51:50"Oh, the lyrics, the intimacy, the way that you make people feel,

0:51:50 > 0:51:54"the...the... ah, the conversations that you are having.

0:51:54 > 0:51:57"the emotions, it's extraordinary. I...

0:51:59 > 0:52:01"..I think...I think I want to work with you."

0:52:01 > 0:52:05LAUGHTER

0:52:06 > 0:52:07You're so good.

0:52:09 > 0:52:11And listen, that is it for tonight.

0:52:11 > 0:52:14Please give a huge thank you to my guests. Gregory Porter!

0:52:14 > 0:52:17Jeff Goldblum.

0:52:17 > 0:52:19Jack Whitehall.

0:52:19 > 0:52:20Gerard Butler.

0:52:20 > 0:52:24And of course, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27Join me next week with music icon Morrissey,

0:52:27 > 0:52:30top model Cara Delevingne, actress Claire Foy,

0:52:30 > 0:52:33comic genius Adam Sandler and double Oscar winner, Emma Thompson.

0:52:33 > 0:52:36I'll see you then. Good night, everybody, bye-bye.
