:00:00. > :00:08.Today, TV lost a true entertainer, a master of his craft and a man
:00:09. > :00:18.who was a fixture on Saturday Night TV for so many years.
:00:19. > :00:19.On tonight's TMTV, we begin by celebrating
:00:20. > :00:22.Paul Daniels and his simply magic TV shows.
:00:23. > :00:33.Do you believe in that fun stuff they call - magic! Rubbish. That's
:00:34. > :00:39.what we're after here! You're going to like it, not a lot, but you'll
:00:40. > :00:43.like it. Wiggle your fingers. It doesn't do anything, but it looks
:00:44. > :00:49.good. You finish up with money. It goes up the sleeve, across your
:00:50. > :00:54.shoulders, down the sleeve and back into the cup. Nine of hearts was
:00:55. > :00:59.your choice, wasn't it? Say, yes, Paul. Yes, Paul. Put your hands at
:01:00. > :01:06.the front you can wave at your head as it goes past.
:01:07. > :01:12.This isn't really the end, this is only the end of the beginning. Until
:01:13. > :01:30.the next time we meet, take a lot of care. Goodbye for now.
:01:31. > :01:41.If you've just watched Eggheads, the five brainiest people in Britain
:01:42. > :01:43.have just lost out to a team of five women.
:01:44. > :01:51.Jeremy Vine, the big boss, is here to talk about one
:01:52. > :01:52.of the biggest moments in Eggheads history
:01:53. > :01:59.I have been waiting for the Eggheads to get beaten.
:02:00. > :02:02.Plus TV critic, Toby Earle, joins us to give us the latest TV
:02:03. > :02:08.But before we get into all that, we're joined by Jamie Raven,
:02:09. > :02:11.who's no mean magician himself and who was inspired to take up
:02:12. > :02:19.Great to see you snoochl thanks for having me. Paul Daniels first TV
:02:20. > :02:24.appearance was on Opportunity Knocks. He came second. You came
:02:25. > :02:27.second in Britain?s Got Talent. All the best team come second. How old
:02:28. > :02:48.were you? 32. Paul was in his 30s,
:02:49. > :02:51.had already played clubs up and down the country and had a summer season
:02:52. > :02:54.in Newquay under his belt. He'd been practising his magic
:02:55. > :02:57.since he was 11 after reading a book Imagine if he'd never
:02:58. > :03:01.picked up that book. He went on to be such a familiar
:03:02. > :03:03.face on our screens, At the end of the 70's,
:03:04. > :03:12.the BBC gave Paul his own series, That is became you aware of him We
:03:13. > :03:14.watched the show on a Saturday evening. What was brilliant about
:03:15. > :03:17.him? A combination of magic tricks that leave you wondering how and his
:03:18. > :03:19.comedy and style as an entertainer. It wasn't just what he was doing
:03:20. > :03:22.that was impressing you, it was how he was taking on the journey to get
:03:23. > :03:25.there. He called it - going home magic. When you would watch him live
:03:26. > :03:32.you would laugh and enjoy the evening. It was when you went home
:03:33. > :03:37.you would go - how did they do that? He was all over our screens, such a
:03:38. > :03:41.big part. Did you meet him? He showed me a trick which, if I can
:03:42. > :03:46.show you the exact thing. There you are. When was that taken? That was
:03:47. > :03:54.at Radio Berkshire. Debbie has a show. I'm from deshg shire. When we
:03:55. > :03:58.did Britain got talent he was there. He gave me advice I would never
:03:59. > :04:04.forget. He showed you a card trick. If I may. Yes, please. A simple card
:04:05. > :04:13.game. I need you to give these a mix. Make sure - Glad you didn't ask
:04:14. > :04:17.me to do that. Shuffle. I asked if he would show me a quick trick. Can
:04:18. > :04:25.you verify they are all different? Yeah. I will run my thumb down the
:04:26. > :04:31.side. If you can say stop. Stop. It should be the seven of diamonds. It
:04:32. > :04:35.saves time. Oh, my goodness. Wow! That was it. I asked for a quick
:04:36. > :04:38.trick. That is what he got. He walked off and left me to it.
:04:39. > :04:44.Magicians need to have the skill of a surgeon and the wit of a stand-up
:04:45. > :04:48.comedian. You have both. Never better than demonstrated in this
:04:49. > :04:52.clip from the Paul Daniels magic show, you will like this a lot.
:04:53. > :04:57.Where's the ball? On the top of the cup. It's on the top of the bottom
:04:58. > :05:00.of the cup. The only time you should worry is if I sneak it nigh left
:05:01. > :05:22.hand. -- into my left hand. You're not following this, are you?
:05:23. > :05:27.Absolutely awesome. I love that. How long would it take to perfect a
:05:28. > :05:30.trick like that? Countless hours. Thousands and thousands of hours.
:05:31. > :05:34.Paul, before he was approached by the BBC to start the show. Was
:05:35. > :05:38.working professionally, working men's clubs up-and-down the country.
:05:39. > :05:41.That trick was honed over hundreds of performances and thousands of
:05:42. > :05:44.hours of practice. I would struggle to remember the script let alone do
:05:45. > :05:49.the slight of hand that went with it. Absolutely. Amazing. It wasn't
:05:50. > :05:59.just close-up magic he was good at. He could pull off a grand illusion.
:06:00. > :06:06.Here he is doing that with the wonderful Debbie McGhee. Please keep
:06:07. > :06:11.an eye on her lovely costume, ladies and gentlemen. Having her covered
:06:12. > :06:15.from head to toe. We will move this young lady back into space where she
:06:16. > :06:22.came from. Take her away, higher and higher. She ascends above the circus
:06:23. > :06:27.ring, watch very closely. 3, 2, 1! GO!
:06:28. > :06:33.How did he do that? Absolutely amazing. What a showman as well.
:06:34. > :06:40.Beyond the magic Paul had a terrific career as a game show host. Who
:06:41. > :06:45.remembers Odd One Out? Every second counts and my faifiate wipe out.
:06:46. > :06:50.Here's your host for every second counts - Paul Daniels.
:06:51. > :07:03.Please welcome your host on Wipeout, Paul Daniels.
:07:04. > :07:10.Ah! Listen,, I love doing this show. Who else can ask people alfew
:07:11. > :07:17.questions, take away all their money! Apart from the tax inspector!
:07:18. > :07:20.What is his TV legacy It has to have been the man who brought magic back
:07:21. > :07:25.to the masses and made it interesting, cool and fun again.
:07:26. > :07:26.It's a sad day we won't be able toll pick his brains any more.
:07:27. > :07:58.Absolutely. Our thoughts are with Debbie and all
:07:59. > :08:02.his family. Paul Daniels was a true TV trailblazer.
:08:03. > :08:06.Just a few minutes ago, on tonight's Eggheads,
:08:07. > :08:07.the thing that hardly ever happens happened!
:08:08. > :08:10.The Eggheads lost playing to a team of five amazing women with alopecia.
:08:11. > :08:13.They had this final question to stay in the game.
:08:14. > :08:21.We will guess fertility. That's all it is. If you have got this wrong,
:08:22. > :08:25.then our brilliant challengers have ?29,000. If you've got it right.
:08:26. > :08:32.It's three each and we go to Sudden Death. I thought,, soon as they saw
:08:33. > :08:36.Celtic God I thought, Pat knows all his Celtic Gods. Prays to them all
:08:37. > :08:40.the time. You had a good rummage around. It wasn't be good enough.
:08:41. > :08:49.The answer is thunder. Congratulations challengers. You
:08:50. > :08:53.have won. Let's welcome Jeremy Vine. How are the Eggheads? Do they take
:08:54. > :08:57.it seriously? They were sporting about that one. That was the nicest
:08:58. > :09:00.team of challenges we have ever had. They get cross. It's interesting,
:09:01. > :09:06.they get cross with themselves. They get cross with me. I bet. We had a
:09:07. > :09:11.question of - who was wrongly to have said to have played the
:09:12. > :09:18.saxophone on the song Baker Street. You know it? Yeah. The answer was
:09:19. > :09:22.Bob Holness he didn't play it. They got it wrong. They said that isn't a
:09:23. > :09:27.fact because the fact isn't true. It wasn't a real question. They get
:09:28. > :09:30.serious, I'm afraid. I imagine CJ getting angry about those things.
:09:31. > :09:37.Those smiles, we have to leave their jaws open a lot of the time to
:09:38. > :09:42.get... I was talking to CJ I said, me try you on Tootsie. He loves
:09:43. > :09:49.films. How many Oscars. He told me who wrote it, acted - How do they
:09:50. > :09:54.know this? I said, do you like the film? He said, never seen it. Who is
:09:55. > :09:59.the most feared? Kevin is remarkable. I think he's the Nos
:10:00. > :10:02.knowledgeable person in the English-speaking world. It was eight
:10:03. > :10:06.on Eggheads before he even got a history question wrong. He's
:10:07. > :10:11.absolutely extraordinary. They all have different strengths. Judith,
:10:12. > :10:19.for example, she won ?1 million on a history question. Have you a
:10:20. > :10:25.favourite I do - this is very dangerous now. Come on! Judith, when
:10:26. > :10:30.she plays sports rounds. She get nervous. I said - I will take you to
:10:31. > :10:34.see a football game to help you. About three or four weeks ago I went
:10:35. > :10:41.to see Chelsea play with her at Stamford bridge. She came with me. I
:10:42. > :10:47.say "we" I'm outing myself - you now know. I'm off. We won 5-1. She was
:10:48. > :10:51.sitting next to me enjoying the game. We had a nice day out. Is
:10:52. > :10:55.there anything else we don't know that goes on behind-the-scenes It's
:10:56. > :10:59.filmed in Glasgow. We are on five days a week. People watch it every
:11:00. > :11:03.day who don't see the stuff behind-the-scenes. My lunch break is
:11:04. > :11:07.about 32 minutes long. I try to get out of the building, just to see
:11:08. > :11:11.daylight and go over the bridge over the Clyde and back again. When I hit
:11:12. > :11:16.the bridge I get a text saying - come back now, where are you? It
:11:17. > :11:20.surprises people, we film five-a-day. Most days we film an
:11:21. > :11:24.awful lot. The other interesting thing, in terms of the tactics teams
:11:25. > :11:29.come and want to know how to play it. There isn't any obvious way. You
:11:30. > :11:34.want to try and take out Kevin as early as possible. By challenging
:11:35. > :11:39.him on his weakest subject, which is food and drink. What is that? Food
:11:40. > :11:45.and drink. He doesn't have an oven. Has he not? There have been standout
:11:46. > :11:53.moments this is our particular favourite. I'm not sure you will
:11:54. > :12:03.like it. Donny Whalberg found film with which boyband? New Kids on the
:12:04. > :12:11.Block, back street boys or NSYNC. Sorry, that sounds under believably
:12:12. > :12:18.- you can tease me now NSYNC. I'm so embarrassed. You're going to leave
:12:19. > :12:26.that in as well! Oh, dear. Not an NSYNC fan then? I would put money on
:12:27. > :12:31.the fact you were. It's terrible. We had one where the question was -
:12:32. > :12:38.which western leader famously rode bare chested on horse back. The
:12:39. > :12:42.answer was, was it, Vladimir Putin or Angela Merkel. When is they say
:12:43. > :12:46.Merkel I burst out laughing, I couldn't stop. We had your brother
:12:47. > :12:49.on last week. Interesting that both of you, Tim Vine, of course, loads
:12:50. > :12:55.of people don't put two and two Not at all together. All. Interesting
:12:56. > :13:01.you both ended up on TV. People will start tweeting, I can't believe they
:13:02. > :13:04.were brothers. We were brought up in Cheam, lovely parents, sister Sonia.
:13:05. > :13:10.The TV was the most exciting thing in the house. We were watching dear
:13:11. > :13:17.old Paul Daniels. We loved it. It's time to put the quiz master to the
:13:18. > :13:22.test. We thought we would quiz Tim Vine about you. All the questions
:13:23. > :13:26.are DV related. He said that you never watch television. Let's see
:13:27. > :13:32.how well Tim and injury any know each other this is Vineheads.
:13:33. > :13:39.Question one. I'm ready. What is Jeremy's most annoying on screen
:13:40. > :13:44.habit is it: I think hem' say - he takes my jokes. If I tell one of his
:13:45. > :13:48.jokes I massacre it. Let's look to see if you're It's when he right.
:13:49. > :13:54.Takes one of my jokes and murders it. Really row, what a rip-off.
:13:55. > :13:59.Really row shall, that's pretty pricey. That is what he would say.
:14:00. > :14:08.It's true. Second question. Who is Jeremy's TV hero. Is it: He has
:14:09. > :14:15.given me a hospital pass. I don't know what he thinks. OK, tricky. I'm
:14:16. > :14:22.going to put Paxman there. OK. Let us see if you're right. Jeremy's TV
:14:23. > :14:29.hero is Bagpuss. Admit it. All three of them were a joke. Nothing wrong
:14:30. > :14:32.with loving Bagpuss. One each. Third question: What is Jeremy's favourite
:14:33. > :14:45.TV dinner I bet Tim has gone for cous cous. I
:14:46. > :14:55.will say bangers and mash. Let's see if your right. His favourite TV
:14:56. > :15:01.dinner is cous cous. Just putting me into that bracket. No ?27,000 for
:15:02. > :15:05.you tonight. No. I will have a word with him later. I saw him on Monday
:15:06. > :15:12.night he didn't mention that. We told him to keep it a secret. The
:15:13. > :15:15.nation knows you are a Chelsea supporter and eat cous cous with a
:15:16. > :15:21.tangerine jus. For quizzing of a higher standard,
:15:22. > :15:23.tune in to Eggheads, BBC Two, every weekday
:15:24. > :15:25.night at 6.00pm. Everyone has a favourite show
:15:26. > :15:33.they'd like to bring back. My personal favourite, The A Team,
:15:34. > :15:36.on a Saturday night. Anyway, time to hand over
:15:37. > :15:50.to the lovely Susan Calman who's had a dig around the archives to find
:15:51. > :16:13.a programme she wants to Bring Back. My name is Susan Calman, and I'd
:16:14. > :16:19.like to bring back Juliet Bravo. That theme music. I still hear it
:16:20. > :16:25.and go, great, and you sit down and go this is going to be brilliant.
:16:26. > :16:29.Juliet Bravo ran between 1980 and 1985 on BBC One, and it revolves
:16:30. > :16:34.around the life and career of a female police inspector in a
:16:35. > :16:41.fictional town in Lancashire. I'll go inside, you go down to the rear.
:16:42. > :16:46.There may be a dangerous man in there, ma'am. I'll be all right,
:16:47. > :16:50.Joseph. I was six years old when Juliet Bravo started, I remember
:16:51. > :16:57.being full and happy, so it must have been after tea-time, some form
:16:58. > :17:01.of delicious 80s meal, prepared, a boil in the bag fish or something
:17:02. > :17:12.like that. The show made me feel excited. So a modern iron might
:17:13. > :17:20.criticise it for the lack of action. -- a modern I. It is drama that does
:17:21. > :17:24.not rely on the tricks of the trade of editing or fancy effects, so it
:17:25. > :17:31.is a lot more gentle, very relaxing to watch, very relaxing. I remember
:17:32. > :17:35.it being grey, cold, slightly bleak, a tad depressing, to be honest, that
:17:36. > :17:40.it was also ground-breaking. The main character was a woman, and
:17:41. > :17:43.unapologetically a woman, and it dealt with the issue of a woman
:17:44. > :17:50.being charge of a station, which was full of men. Ruud the inspector to
:17:51. > :17:57.replace Mr Wood up is a lady, Ted. A ready woman, I don't believe it. It
:17:58. > :18:00.was the first time women were allowed to be in the middle of it,
:18:01. > :18:04.not just the wife or girlfriend. From a personal point of view it was
:18:05. > :18:09.ground-breaking, but also to show that audiences would accept a show
:18:10. > :18:14.that had a woman as the main character. What did you get? 240
:18:15. > :18:17.hours community service. Ruud you made my day, I was beginning to
:18:18. > :18:25.think that Young hooligan would never get his card marked. Very
:18:26. > :18:29.creditable. I could do without the patria doesn't. Happy Valley
:18:30. > :18:34.continues in that tradition of incredibly strong characters, so
:18:35. > :18:41.Juliet Bravo is responsible for my love of television, in a lot of
:18:42. > :18:46.ways. Perhaps you would like to take yourself outside and check the
:18:47. > :18:50.control vehicles. Sorry, were you in the middle of your dinner, bad luck.
:18:51. > :18:54.I think we should bring back Juliet Bravo for a number of reasons, it is
:18:55. > :18:57.a female lead cop drama, we need more of them, secondly it remains
:18:58. > :19:01.one of the best shows ever made and would be even better updated, and
:19:02. > :19:04.thirdly, I want to be Juliet Bravo, I want to fulfil my childhood
:19:05. > :19:10.destiny and finally become the woman I have admired for the past three
:19:11. > :19:16.decades. I will be Juliet Bravo, I need to be Juliet Bravo, bring back
:19:17. > :19:18.Juliet Bravo. Specially for you, we will.
:19:19. > :19:21.Now, time to take a trip to a place we like to call the Grapevine.
:19:22. > :19:24.Its a cosy little place we like to go to to get
:19:25. > :19:45.We made it. Just coming a bit nearer to you.
:19:46. > :19:58.I have got the round in. Thank you very much, what do you think of the
:19:59. > :20:03.Grapevine? The service has been pretty good so far, snacks out of
:20:04. > :20:09.ten, a fume all its next time maybe. What TV news have you got for us?
:20:10. > :20:14.There have been steamy scenes on TV you would find in case the
:20:15. > :20:16.malfunctioning sauna, the night manager, Tom Huddlestone's terrier
:20:17. > :20:24.appearing under cover, and then a shower scene in East End is that got
:20:25. > :20:34.people lathered up. But the SIA is coming in the near future, set in
:20:35. > :20:38.the court of -- Versaille. It has already aired on the continent and
:20:39. > :20:43.there has been comment about some of the scenes. I have seen some
:20:44. > :20:48.pictures from this, and it does look rather rude. Historically accurate,
:20:49. > :20:54.I'm sure, but they are trying to show how that court of Louis XIV
:20:55. > :20:57.operated. A Brit plays the lead, he was more concerned with playing a
:20:58. > :21:05.French historical figure than the exposure of the flesh. More gossip!
:21:06. > :21:09.You are so hungry for it, Pointless celebrity starts this weekend, and
:21:10. > :21:14.Richard Osman returns. You will also be back in insert name here, that
:21:15. > :21:16.has been commissioned for a second series. Taskmaster, he has been
:21:17. > :21:25.announced as part of that comedy show on Dave, Pointless... He is
:21:26. > :21:35.raking it in! Is at the year of Richard Osman? You will know of him
:21:36. > :21:43.through osmosis. Noel Edmonds news? Deal or perhaps no deal at all any
:21:44. > :21:46.more whatsoever. Channel 4 have made an announcement in the summer they
:21:47. > :21:50.will be looking at it, it might not be coming back. At its peak of
:21:51. > :21:53.course, pulling in about 2 million viewers, the number of countries
:21:54. > :21:57.around the world showing it looked like ever was completed game of
:21:58. > :22:02.risk. Now it looks like a game of risk guess about started and people
:22:03. > :22:07.have got interested. At its heart, 22 boxes, people randomly picking
:22:08. > :22:11.boxes, that was the show. They try to do different things, fancy dress.
:22:12. > :22:17.Box 35, people phoning in, allsorts of things, it has reached the end of
:22:18. > :22:22.its natural shelf life. But it has done very well, ten years or so. And
:22:23. > :22:34.news from America. Ruud Jennifer Lopez news. She is gorgeous. She has
:22:35. > :22:38.in the past played a law enforcement officer on the big screen, now on
:22:39. > :22:44.the small green, Shades of Blue, she plays a dodgy copper. I thought
:22:45. > :22:49.better of her, she really is enlisted by the FBI to bring down
:22:50. > :22:56.and even dodgier copper, played by Ray Liotta. He is brilliant and
:22:57. > :23:01.menacing. And Matthew Perry, he is going to be playing Ted Kennedy in a
:23:02. > :23:04.sequel to the biopic, the Kennedys. He will be playing one of the
:23:05. > :23:11.biggest political characters in modern American history. Could he be
:23:12. > :23:18.any more miscast? Help yourself to some nuts after that. Also something
:23:19. > :23:22.I think I will quite like, a new show about wine? Yes, we all have
:23:23. > :23:30.great expectations around the wine show, which stars Matthew Goode the
