0:00:50 > 0:00:55or we could just show you what to expect over the next ten weeks.

0:00:55 > 0:00:56DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Are you guys ready to get your asses kicked?

0:01:03 > 0:01:06I don't want to die in a Buick!

0:01:08 > 0:01:09Get on the bikeway!

0:01:10 > 0:01:11It was spitting fire!

0:01:11 > 0:01:15Holy ****!

0:01:18 > 0:01:22If you're a middle-aged man with a controlling wife, 2005 Mini Cooper.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25This is possibly the dumbest thing I've ever done.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29This is going to be so bad! HE HUMS DRUM ROLL

0:01:30 > 0:01:33The car is bent! Look at it!

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Why would you hit my house?

0:01:36 > 0:01:39It's like being aroused at gunpoint.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44There it is! You're going to hit my car!

0:01:44 > 0:01:48There is no way she can pull that off. Even I wouldn't wear that.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58- That was my bad!- Ow!

0:02:00 > 0:02:02And that's Top Gear.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Lots of horsepower, questionable decision-making

0:02:06 > 0:02:08and awesome cars, like this.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11This is a Shelby Cobra 427.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14It's basically just a tin can with a huge motor wedged in it.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18It's also one of the most sought- after classic cars in the world.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Originals can sell for a million bucks.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24There's never been anything like this car, except maybe one.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26To celebrate the only car of the modern era

0:02:26 > 0:02:30that even comes close to having the spirit of a Cobra,

0:02:30 > 0:02:34we decided to head south for an amazing all-American challenge.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36BLUESY GUITAR MUSIC

0:02:36 > 0:02:39This is Griffin, a bucolic sleepy town,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42basking in the heat of a Georgia summer.

0:02:44 > 0:02:49We came here because we couldn't find any other place in the United States

0:02:49 > 0:02:53that would allow us to do what we were about to do...

0:02:55 > 0:03:00An epic challenge involving two snakes.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Snake number one... HISSING

0:03:06 > 0:03:09In the late 1980s, Chrysler got involved with Lamborghini.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12This sordid affair lasted six years

0:03:12 > 0:03:16and when they split, they left behind a love child...

0:03:16 > 0:03:19..the Dodge Viper.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23It's considered one of the few American supercars.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Just the name instils a sense of fear.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29SRT stands for Street and Racing Technology

0:03:29 > 0:03:32and the 10 tells you there are 10 cylinders

0:03:32 > 0:03:35under that enormous hood.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45The Viper is the most American car I have ever driven.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47It's all power, absolutely no finesse,

0:03:47 > 0:03:52and it doesn't give a damn what the rest of the world thinks about it.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54TYRES SCREECH

0:03:54 > 0:03:57It's not practical, frankly, it's just dangerous,

0:03:57 > 0:04:02but if you ever wondered what it would be like to strap yourself to the back of an engine,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05this is it.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08My God!

0:04:10 > 0:04:12100!

0:04:12 > 0:04:14120!

0:04:14 > 0:04:15140!

0:04:15 > 0:04:17That's 150.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21That's as fast as I dare go on this runway.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27What sets the Viper apart is its complete lack of electronic aids.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31There's no electric stability control, no traction control.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36With 560 pounds of torque, that can be a little bit tricky.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46Every time I turn the steering wheel, it feels like this car is determined to kill me.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50It's like a mean, mean horse

0:04:50 > 0:04:52that doesn't like people sitting on its back.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55But there's something cool about controlling that chaos.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59It's about getting on this horse and mastering it,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02even though it doesn't like it.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12And by mastering it, I mean surviving.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Dodge officially phased out the Viper in 2010.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20It won't come back in a new version until 2012.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24By then, stability control systems will be mandatory in the US.

0:05:24 > 0:05:29So there will never be another car as dangerous as this ever again.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35To pay tribute, we've been challenged to make a lap

0:05:35 > 0:05:38from here to the other side of town and back,

0:05:38 > 0:05:40which sounds pretty easy.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Except, we're not alone.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47This is snake number two...

0:05:48 > 0:05:52..the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57A sleek, highly-manoeuvrable gunship.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02It's armed with a sophisticated missile-guidance system.

0:06:02 > 0:06:08Now, this angel of death had a new prey. Us.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11- How fast is it?- 172mph.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15- The Viper goes 202, so we've got 30mph on them already.- Cool.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Uh, they have missiles.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21I've got to be honest - the Viper, tricky to drive.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Really?! For you?!

0:06:23 > 0:06:27I feel lucky to be here right now. It's brute, fast, awesome.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- Does it have airbags?- Yes.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32We'll be fine! They've got missiles.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Here's the challenge - we had to drive the Viper from the airfield,

0:06:35 > 0:06:40across the town of Griffin to the railroad bridge and back -

0:06:40 > 0:06:41a ten-mile round trip -

0:06:41 > 0:06:44all while being hunted by the Cobra.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51The Viper was fitted with a missile-detection system.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54If the Cobra got in range, the white light went on.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00If it got in missile lock, the yellow light would go on.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05And if the red light went on... Well, we were dead.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Like a video game, we had three lives to make it there and back.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13When do we go?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- I think right now. - I think we go now.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24'Rutledge was the navigator. His first task - find the exit.'

0:07:24 > 0:07:29- How do I get out of here?- Uh... - This is a dead end.- Ah, crap!

0:07:29 > 0:07:32MUSIC: "Night on Bald Mountain" by Modest Mussorgsky

0:07:38 > 0:07:40I'll swerve it.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44'Our only chance was to try and out-manoeuvre the Cobra.'

0:07:44 > 0:07:48I think the swerving just makes it mad.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51- DEVICE BEEPS Dead end, dude.- He's got yellow!

0:07:51 > 0:07:53DIALOGUE BLEEPED

0:08:00 > 0:08:02OK. I have crapped my pants!

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Oh, no! He's right above us!

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Oh, my God! Look at that!

0:08:13 > 0:08:15- DEVICE BEEPS - He's got yellow!

0:08:16 > 0:08:21Oh, no! Oh, my God, we're dead!

0:08:21 > 0:08:24'One life down. We had just two left.

0:08:24 > 0:08:29'We needed to get out of the airfield. It was time for Plan B.'

0:08:36 > 0:08:39I think you shook him.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41- Is this the way out?- Yes.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45Go up here, hang a left at this stop sign.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48We're in the trees. We should probably just blend a little bit.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51- We're in the trees.- Just a couple of guys in a convertible.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54UP-BEAT BLUESY MUSIC

0:09:01 > 0:09:04There he is, right there.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11- Let's pull into the car wash. - All right.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19- He's right up there. - Oh, man, look how close!

0:09:26 > 0:09:29In a weird way, the Viper is kind of every guy's dream.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32It's bright, it's loud, it's fun

0:09:32 > 0:09:37and it's got way more power than pretty much any of us need on the street.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40The Viper is kind of like that girl

0:09:40 > 0:09:44- that you wouldn't bring home to Mom. - Right.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49- You have video-taped every intimacy you've had -- It's like Pam Anderson!

0:09:49 > 0:09:53Yes. There's not much real about it, but who cares?

0:09:57 > 0:10:00Let's get out of here.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Listen, I know we've got power,

0:10:03 > 0:10:05but let's just try to drive normal for once.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09- Let's drive slow. - I get it. Blend in.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13'We were just three miles from the bridge

0:10:13 > 0:10:16'and we still had two lives left.'

0:10:16 > 0:10:20- There's another red convertible. - Yeah.- With another woman in it.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22I think that's a pattern.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25I definitely think we're the only two dudes

0:10:25 > 0:10:28riding together in a red convertible right now.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33'We had made it to the old warehouse district,

0:10:33 > 0:10:35'just a few blocks from the bridge.'

0:10:35 > 0:10:38- DRAMATIC MUSIC - Crap!

0:10:38 > 0:10:40This is ridiculous!

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Make a right.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Back up. There you go.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Just go right at him. Uh-oh!

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- DEVICE BEEPS - Look out!

0:11:02 > 0:11:05- It worked!- Look at that!

0:11:09 > 0:11:12'We'd lost the Cobra and made it to the halfway point.'

0:11:12 > 0:11:16'Now all Rutledge needed to do was find the way back to the airfield.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19'With only one life lost, things were looking up.'

0:11:19 > 0:11:23- I don't know where...- It's almost like it echoes through the, uh...

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Oh, man, I hear him.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29- Oh, no, there he is.- Oh, crap!

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Don't just sit here! Go, go, go!

0:11:32 > 0:11:34DEVICE BEEPS

0:11:34 > 0:11:39We've got to go underneath the bridge.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41FAST-PACED BLUEGRASS MUSIC

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Nice, nice. You shook him.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59'The high-speed escape had saved our butts, but now we were lost.'

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- Shall I turn right here? - Yes, take a right.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04'Dead lost.'

0:12:09 > 0:12:12How did we get into a cemetery, Rutledge?

0:12:12 > 0:12:16What kind of navigator are you? HE SIGHS

0:12:16 > 0:12:20I cannot find my way out of here. We are going straight to hell, my friend.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Just turn left here on Blasphemy Boulevard.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27'Plan F wasn't working out.'

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Tanner, I hear him.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33- Oh, hell!- Where is he? - He's right behind us!

0:12:34 > 0:12:37'As we moved amongst the tombs and graves,

0:12:37 > 0:12:42the Cobra dived on us, ready to spit its venom.'

0:12:44 > 0:12:47'This was our Judgement Day.'

0:13:10 > 0:13:13He's got a lock on us!

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- No! - DEVICE BUZZES

0:13:16 > 0:13:22Ohh! Of course, we get killed in a cemetery!

0:13:23 > 0:13:28'I decided the time for hiding was over. It was time to fight back.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32'It was time for Plan V... V10.'

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- Where is he?- Left here!

0:13:41 > 0:13:44'The high-speed run got us back to the airfield.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49'We just had to make it through the hangars to safety, 500 yards away.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52'But the Cobra was waiting.'

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Oh, crap!

0:13:58 > 0:14:00HE SHOUTS

0:14:00 > 0:14:03MUSIC: "Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Wagner

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Damn, that thing's fast!

0:14:07 > 0:14:09I'm going 150 miles an hour!

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- Oh, my God.- Dead end, dude.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18Whoa! DIALOGUE BLEEPED

0:14:18 > 0:14:22'Out in the open, we were sitting ducks.'

0:14:22 > 0:14:24DEVICE BEEPS

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Oh, we're dead!

0:14:38 > 0:14:42- BEEPING - Nooooo!

0:14:46 > 0:14:51- He got sick, didn't he? - I don't know if he got sick, but he was screaming a lot.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55I'm just getting to where I can sleep through the night without hearing that helicopter!

0:14:55 > 0:14:59I'm sorry you guys were killed, but I'm more sorry Dodge is killing the Viper.

0:14:59 > 0:15:03This is the last year for this generation of Viper, so that was our sendoff.

0:15:03 > 0:15:08But now Dodge is also saying goodbye in their own way by doing limited editions, like this.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11This is the ACR 133 Edition.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14What do you guys think of this? APPLAUSE

0:15:14 > 0:15:17When you think of Viper, you don't think of subtle, right?

0:15:17 > 0:15:20The red wheels, they're not subtle, so it fits.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23That's what's too flashy for you, the red wheels?!

0:15:23 > 0:15:26It was built specifically to commemorate Dodge's

0:15:26 > 0:15:29demolishing of the production car record at Laguna Seca.

0:15:29 > 0:15:34- How much for this one? - This one's 112,000.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37Mainly because they're only making 33 of them.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41This one's too rare for us to beat up on and feel good about,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45- but that regular ACR is not. - No problem at all.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49We got a 1.6-mile track that Top Gear uses to test all of its cars.

0:15:49 > 0:15:54It's full of straights and curves and is designed to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of any car

0:15:54 > 0:15:56and push it to the limits and beyond.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Every car we put out on our test track

0:15:59 > 0:16:01is going to be driven as hard and fast as possible,

0:16:01 > 0:16:04so that we can keep track of all the times

0:16:04 > 0:16:08and see which cars really perform on the racetrack and which cars suffer.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12The only thing missing from this equation is a professional race driver.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16- There he is.- You'll never see his face, you'll never hear his voice

0:16:16 > 0:16:20and his only job is to drive as fast as he can.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23No-one knows what hides behind that smoked visor.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26All we do know is he's called The Stig.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28APPLAUSE

0:16:28 > 0:16:33Very difficult to launch the ACR with 600 horsepower in rear-wheel drive.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37Stig, very impressive there. It's about a 2,000rpm launch

0:16:37 > 0:16:39and he just pulls away, no problem.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Hard on the brakes through turn one. This looks like a massive car

0:16:42 > 0:16:47going through the tightest chicane on the track, the Southern Chicane.

0:16:47 > 0:16:52Kicking up a bit of a roost into the slowest portion of the track, the Teardrop.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56Out of the teardrop, very difficult with a car with so much horsepower

0:16:56 > 0:16:58to avoid wheel spin and opposite lock.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Let's see if The Stig can do it here. Yes! Second gear.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Puts the power down. Amazingly efficient out of that corner.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08150mph on the straightaway.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12I'm told at 150, this car creates 1,000 pounds of downforce,

0:17:12 > 0:17:16and he is using all of it as he grinds down onto the brakes

0:17:16 > 0:17:17into Cameraman's Corner.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20Sawing at the wheel there.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23Little bit of a sketchy moment, but he pulls it off.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27Fastest section of the track, coming into the final corner.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31This is going to be an amazing time. And across the line!

0:17:31 > 0:17:33CHEERING

0:17:34 > 0:17:38This really is virtually a race car with licence plates.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41Being our first car on here,

0:17:41 > 0:17:45I can tell you, you just have to trust me on this, this was an amazing time.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49Going to be the benchmark. One of the times to beat, for sure.

0:17:49 > 0:17:531.22.0. APPLAUSE

0:17:56 > 0:17:59It doesn't seem fair to have that as the first car out.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02- That's a high target.- Especially for a car THAT hard to drive.

0:18:02 > 0:18:08There's no traction control, there's no driver aid besides your feet and hands.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Now it's time for something we like to call Big Star, Small Car.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17Other TV shows treat their guests to rides in fur-lined helicopters.

0:18:17 > 0:18:22They sit them on the couch and ask them softball questions about their latest project.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Not Top Gear. We make our guests work hard.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29We put them on our track and have them set a lap time in our celebrity car.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32Of course, this car had to be something special.

0:18:32 > 0:18:37So we had to find something that had awesome power, incredible handling

0:18:37 > 0:18:39and, of course, style.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42So we took it upon ourselves to get this...

0:18:42 > 0:18:46- LAUGHTER - ..the Suzuki SX4.

0:18:46 > 0:18:51That's right. This is 17,000 of front-wheel-drive acceptableness!

0:18:51 > 0:18:56Each week, a celebrity will try and push this Suzuki around our track as fast as possible.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59But first, we decided to give it a safety check.

0:18:59 > 0:19:03- Here we go.- Do you have a helmet? - You're wearing a helmet?- Yeah!

0:19:03 > 0:19:06You guys didn't get helmets?

0:19:07 > 0:19:12- Are these the wipers?- Tight corner! - Stop it.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14See if we catch air on the yump.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17- BOTH: That what? - It's a jump in rally.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19We just yumped.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- Stop, stop, stop, stop!- What? What?

0:19:22 > 0:19:24- Stop!- What?- Oh!

0:19:24 > 0:19:26What?

0:19:26 > 0:19:29- Did you guys have lunch?- I did not. - I cannot believe...

0:19:29 > 0:19:31- We should get something. - On the way back.

0:19:31 > 0:19:37- Oh, boy!- Oh, that was smooth! - That was nice.

0:19:38 > 0:19:45That is what a Suzuki can do when it has two idiots in it, trying to distract the driver.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Let's see what it's capable of in our celebrity's hands.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52Please help me welcome a real American hero, Buzz Aldrin!

0:20:02 > 0:20:07It's an honour to meet you. Thank you for being on our show.

0:20:07 > 0:20:11So '61, Kennedy says, "Before the decade's out, we're going to the moon."

0:20:11 > 0:20:13'69, you were part of that landing party.

0:20:13 > 0:20:18And you did 18,000 miles an hour in a can.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Almost 18. 17 something. But that was just in orbit.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25- Just in orbit?- We had to go faster to leave the earth.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29- How fast did you go? - 25,000 miles an hour.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32- 25,000 miles an hour?!- Yes.

0:20:32 > 0:20:38- In the same can?!- The same can! - No steering wheel. You shift it with thrusters?

0:20:38 > 0:20:41- Well, the rocket steers a little bit.- Right.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- You hope.- You hope! - LAUGHTER

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Let me ask you this about your cars. You've had many, many cars.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51- Yes.- Your first car, when you graduated, you got a '57 Chevy?

0:20:51 > 0:20:53They weren't too expensive in those days.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56And you had a '56 DKW?

0:20:56 > 0:21:02It's a three-cylinder, two-cycle. You've got to put the oil in with the gasoline.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04I thought it was a good combination

0:21:04 > 0:21:07of interesting and a sports car,

0:21:07 > 0:21:10and it really wasn't too much of either one!

0:21:10 > 0:21:13And you had an Austin-Healey Sprite?

0:21:13 > 0:21:15- That was nice!- Bug-eyed Sprite.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17- How did it ride?- Very smooth.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Until you get on those Boston cobblestones

0:21:19 > 0:21:23and then it's kinda hard on the rear end.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25And you had a '70 Saab Sonett?

0:21:25 > 0:21:29- That was a nice little car. - You liked that one. - Real low to the ground.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31It was kind of a hotshot car.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34Then we moved on to a Corvair convertible.

0:21:34 > 0:21:39That was sort of mellow for a new astronaut to drive a Corvair.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43The right-stuff guys were all driving their Corvettes.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47So I graduated to a Corvette a little bit later.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50What did you think of the Suzuki when you took her out?

0:21:50 > 0:21:52- That's a swift little car.- Swift!

0:21:52 > 0:21:55- Swift!- We're going with swift. - Swift enough for that track.

0:21:55 > 0:22:00- Do you want to see how you did? - I'd love to.- Let's take a look.- Yes!

0:22:00 > 0:22:03Lift-off!

0:22:03 > 0:22:05I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09OK. Good speed in first. Second...

0:22:09 > 0:22:13This is turn one. Nice line through there.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16Back down to second. I was already in second. That's not so good.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Coming out of this one...

0:22:18 > 0:22:21- You have a giant hand. - LAUGHTER

0:22:22 > 0:22:25Nice line through there. Into the Southern Chicane.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Now into third. Faster, faster, faster.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32This turn is the Teardrop, the slowest part of our track.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36He's a bold guy, out with his camera.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40It's hard to see with the cameras in the way, but we can't see you without them.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44Maybe we could try fifth gear here.

0:22:44 > 0:22:50Except, I don't think that's fifth. I think I went back to third again.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54- LAUGHTER - That's OK, it's got plenty of gears.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Through here, then accelerate out.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01- Here's the big hand! - LAUGHTER

0:23:01 > 0:23:06OK, now coming into the final. There's the tyres.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Last turn. And...across the line!

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- How do you think you did? - I got better and better.

0:23:16 > 0:23:21I can guarantee you this, you are going to be the fastest time on our board.

0:23:21 > 0:23:27- The time will be 1.55.6.- Great.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Buzz Aldrin, 1.55.6!

0:23:32 > 0:23:35- Ladies and gentlemen, Buzz Aldrin! - LOUD CHEERING

0:23:40 > 0:23:43This is a tractor. It doesn't seem like much just sitting here,

0:23:43 > 0:23:47but the company that made it went on to achieve greatness,

0:23:47 > 0:23:50as we will demonstrate with the help of livestock.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57SPANISH-STYLE MUSIC

0:24:18 > 0:24:20SPANISH GUITAR

0:24:23 > 0:24:25The bull...

0:24:25 > 0:24:28A symbol of strength.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32Agile, aggressive and fearless.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35There is only one automaker

0:24:35 > 0:24:39that has the blood of the bull coursing through its veins...

0:24:39 > 0:24:41ENGINE ROARS

0:24:42 > 0:24:45..Lamborghini.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57Ferruccio Lamborghini was fascinated by bullfighting.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00So much so, that many of the models in his company

0:25:00 > 0:25:04were named after legendary Spanish fighting bulls.

0:25:04 > 0:25:09We set out to determine the baddest bull of all.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12FAST-PACED TECHNO MUSIC

0:25:21 > 0:25:25Here are the contenders...

0:25:25 > 0:25:28The Gallardo Superleggera -

0:25:28 > 0:25:32light, powerful and explosively fast.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34The Gallardo Balboni -

0:25:34 > 0:25:38a rare rear-wheel drive Lamborghini.

0:25:39 > 0:25:44And one of the quintessential supercars, the Murcielago SuperVeloce.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48My choice is a technological tour de force,

0:25:48 > 0:25:53the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55Stay with me.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01The 570 is for the horsepower. The dash 4 means all-wheel drive.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04The LP means the engine is...there.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08ENGINE ROARS

0:26:08 > 0:26:11Listen to this V10 hum.

0:26:13 > 0:26:18Superleggera means super light, which means this car is less than 3,000 pounds,

0:26:18 > 0:26:21the lightest of all the Lamborghinis.

0:26:21 > 0:26:25It is does 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37Lamborghini worked with scientists at Boeing to develop carbon fibre

0:26:37 > 0:26:43that they used in the doors, spoilers, mirrors and trim pieces to keep the weight low.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47That's a polycarbonate window so you can see the engine.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49ENGINE ROARS

0:26:51 > 0:26:55I wish you could be inside this car to feel my heartbeat.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01This car is terrifying and exciting at the same time.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04It's like being aroused at gunpoint.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08And I even like the colour.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10It's loud, it's yellow!

0:27:10 > 0:27:14It's that crazy uncle that shows up at a wedding and he's totally inappropriate.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17"Hey, where's the bride? I'm-a kiss her right on the mouth!"

0:27:22 > 0:27:26The price tag on this is 250,000,

0:27:26 > 0:27:29plus a 3,000 gas-guzzler tax.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32You'd think for that kind of money everything would be included.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36If you want a cup holder - 650!

0:27:36 > 0:27:41I don't know what the Italian word for bull.... is, but that's where it goes.

0:27:41 > 0:27:46Other than that, I'm having a hard time finding anything wrong with this thing!

0:27:54 > 0:27:58I'm going with the only choice a driving purist could go for,

0:27:58 > 0:28:03and that's the limited edition Lamborghini Gallardo Balboni.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11It's named after the famous Valentino Balboni.

0:28:14 > 0:28:21He's the test driver that had his fingers on every single Lamborghini prototype since 1973.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27It seems like he put this car together specifically for the professional driver,

0:28:27 > 0:28:32which means, first and foremost, it is rear-wheel drive...

0:28:34 > 0:28:39..the first rear-wheel drive Lamborghini since the Diablo.

0:28:45 > 0:28:50As sacrilegious as doughnuts are in a Lamborghini, that's what you get with rear-wheel drive.

0:28:50 > 0:28:55Balboni has this distinctive white stripe that runs the length of the car.

0:28:55 > 0:28:59It continues is a tasteful way in the interior on the seats and the dash.

0:28:59 > 0:29:04It's Valentino Balboni's tribute to racing cars.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18With rear-wheel drive, it means the car feels lighter,

0:29:18 > 0:29:22more crisp, more like I like to drive.

0:29:26 > 0:29:31Driving an Italian exotic should be an experience you remember for your entire life,

0:29:31 > 0:29:35just like Pavlov's dogs and the sound of a ringing bell.

0:29:35 > 0:29:38Like the clapping noise sushi chefs make that...

0:29:38 > 0:29:42..salivates Japanese people.

0:29:42 > 0:29:48The click of metal on metal is what gets me going about this car.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52Ohh! That gated shifter is insane!

0:29:54 > 0:29:56At 219,000,

0:29:56 > 0:29:59the Balboni isn't the cheapest Lamborghini out there,

0:29:59 > 0:30:03but for a driver, I think it's the best.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07Compared to the other two, this is the most real Lamborghini.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10It's not some fancy colour.

0:30:10 > 0:30:14It's fast, it's long and it's low.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19It's scary just parked.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:30:31 > 0:30:35This is the Murcielago SuperVeloce.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39Better known as the SV.

0:30:42 > 0:30:47Now, this SV is one of the top-five supercars in the world, without a doubt.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49It's got everything a supercar needs -

0:30:49 > 0:30:52price, power, exclusivity

0:30:52 > 0:30:55and a whole lot of speed.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58Those other Lambos can go fast.

0:30:58 > 0:31:00The SV can go faster.

0:31:00 > 0:31:06It has a 670-horsepower V12 and that's why I picked this car.

0:31:06 > 0:31:11What does that mean? This'll do 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds.

0:31:14 > 0:31:19The handling on this car is astounding.

0:31:19 > 0:31:24It feels like it's on rails. Wherever you want it to go, that's where it's going to go.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32It's dangerous. I mean, it makes you feel invincible.

0:31:32 > 0:31:36What can't I do with this car?

0:31:45 > 0:31:49The only drawback to this car, for me, is probably the seats.

0:31:49 > 0:31:55They are so race-inspired, and clearly designed for a five-foot-tall Italian man,

0:31:55 > 0:32:00that my 6'3, 225-pound frame is not enjoying.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04Exclusivity is important to any supercar.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06How many are out there?

0:32:06 > 0:32:11Production for the SV is set at 350 cars worldwide.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13At just under 500,000,

0:32:13 > 0:32:17it's clear that this is the greatest bull of them all.

0:32:21 > 0:32:26I've got to admit, regardless of the fact I've got the best car, how awesome is this?

0:32:26 > 0:32:29A desert, alone with some Lamborghinis.

0:32:29 > 0:32:34It is a great day for us, but I have the best car - the Superleggera.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36This is a race car on the street.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38- Was this the plastic one? - Space-age polymer!

0:32:38 > 0:32:42- Space-age polymer.- Like Tupperware. - There's no Tupperware in space.

0:32:42 > 0:32:46Anyone can drive these cars, with their all-wheel drive and paddle shifts,

0:32:46 > 0:32:50but Balboni designed this for real drivers.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52I'm happy to say that you guys are both wrong.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55Behind me is the ultimate Lamborghini.

0:32:55 > 0:32:56The Murcielago SV is it.

0:32:56 > 0:33:00It cost twice as much as this. You can buy two of these cars.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02- Some people would say it's twice the car.- No.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05You have a 200,000 drift car.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07I know. Is that awesome or what?

0:33:07 > 0:33:10If we're talking about the ultimate car,

0:33:10 > 0:33:12I'm going to fly past Bananarama

0:33:12 > 0:33:15- well before you even get close to the end.- Really?

0:33:15 > 0:33:19There's only one way to settle this, and that is to ride these bulls.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23- You want to run them? - From a standstill, one mile. You don't have much room to brake.

0:33:23 > 0:33:28Whoever holds their foot on the gas the longest will go the fastest. Winner takes all.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30- Really?- I'm in.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33- Rutledge has the biggest head, so he goes first.- OK.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39Doing a standing mile's not some simple race.

0:33:39 > 0:33:44Once your car's going over 150 miles an hour, the game changes.

0:33:44 > 0:33:47Wind and stability become a factor.

0:33:47 > 0:33:52The mental game is huge because you have to get your car up to speed before you run out of track.

0:33:52 > 0:33:56- I'm genuinely nervous for him. - Me, too. That's a big bull.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59It seems like an easy thing, but with all this crosswind,

0:33:59 > 0:34:04that doesn't look like the most aerodynamically efficient machine.

0:34:04 > 0:34:09A standing mile, Murcielago SV... Let's do it.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11- ENGINE ROARS He's off.- There he goes.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23130...

0:34:25 > 0:34:28150...

0:34:29 > 0:34:34- Oh, my God.- He's doing it! - He short-shifted a little bit. That's going to cost him.

0:34:36 > 0:34:40- 160...- He just grabbed another gear.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44170...

0:34:47 > 0:34:48175!

0:34:58 > 0:35:00- He short-shifted the last two gears. - Uh-huh.

0:35:00 > 0:35:06- It probably took a bit of speed away, but what do you think? - I'm thinking 180.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08What did you do?

0:35:08 > 0:35:12- 175.- Oh, damn, you were right!

0:35:12 > 0:35:14All right, park it.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24Right, standing mile, good launch, ESP off.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26Hammer down.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29There he goes.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35I love the sound of this thing! Come on, baby!

0:35:35 > 0:35:41That's 90 already. 100. 110. 120.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44- He'll try to get 176 the best he can.- Uh-huh.

0:35:46 > 0:35:48That's a lot of vibration.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50That's 150.

0:35:51 > 0:35:55Come on, baby! 170!

0:35:55 > 0:35:58- 172!- He's still going.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02All right, I'm on the brakes.

0:36:10 > 0:36:14He doesn't like losing. He's probably doing 175 coming back.

0:36:14 > 0:36:15There's a lot of crosswind.

0:36:15 > 0:36:20Amazingly stable, though, considering I've completely wasted these tyres.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24And?

0:36:24 > 0:36:27RUTLEDGE LAUGHS

0:36:27 > 0:36:29- No!- Are you OK? What'd you do?

0:36:29 > 0:36:32Faster than I thought. 173.

0:36:32 > 0:36:36- Aww!- 173? - RUTLEDGE LAUGHS

0:36:36 > 0:36:41Wow. I feel really bad that you didn't beat me.

0:36:43 > 0:36:46Let's just write this down. Today, I beat Tanner Foust.

0:36:52 > 0:36:56Here's the deal. This car can beat 175 easy.

0:36:56 > 0:37:01If mine went 173, this one's going to have no problem, if Adam can just keep his foot down.

0:37:01 > 0:37:06Those guys think my car is made of plastic, but I have a secret weapon. Thrust mode.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09- Set it in corsa... - BEEPING

0:37:09 > 0:37:11..traction control off,

0:37:11 > 0:37:13left foot on the brake.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16I think Adam is too fearless for his own good.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18ENGINE ROARS BOTH: Here he goes.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21- Thrust mode! - DIALOGUE BLEEPED

0:37:35 > 0:37:37150.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42He did another gear, after all of that.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45160.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51165.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54170.

0:38:00 > 0:38:05And good God, was that fun!

0:38:05 > 0:38:08That sounded faster than 175, though.

0:38:08 > 0:38:10- I'm just saying.- How would you know?

0:38:10 > 0:38:14- Because you could tell from the - - You don't. Uh-uh.

0:38:14 > 0:38:16Sorry, man.

0:38:16 > 0:38:21Sorry. You lost. Take it with pride and dignity.

0:38:21 > 0:38:27- This is -- 173's really fast! I'm proud of you. It's just not 175.

0:38:33 > 0:38:35We heard you. You didn't lift.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37HE GIGGLES He looks happy.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39So, did you do it?

0:38:39 > 0:38:41- 180!- Ohh!

0:38:41 > 0:38:44Rutledge, that sucks.

0:38:44 > 0:38:48You said, "He's too fearless for his own good"!

0:38:48 > 0:38:50Let me hear the word "plastic" now.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52- Wow!- Um...

0:38:52 > 0:38:55- Have you ever been that fast in your life?- No.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57- You're shaking!- Let's see your hand!

0:38:57 > 0:39:01- It's cool!- That's a legit 180. - That's cool!

0:39:01 > 0:39:04- That shaking is near death. - That could be it.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08You know what it might be? It might be victory over Tanner.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11A lot of people don't get that feeling. I did.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13I mean, we've shared it. You and I both did.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16- This is a good day. And you beat Tanner.- Yes.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18- And I beat Tanner.- But -

0:39:18 > 0:39:24- You did come in third. - I think I'm gonna go be sick. - I'm going to call my wife.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27- I want to go back in the car! - APPLAUSE

0:39:28 > 0:39:30Unbelievable. Are you over it yet?

0:39:30 > 0:39:33- Not at all.- Perfect!

0:39:33 > 0:39:37I fried the tyres. If I didn't do all the drifting...

0:39:37 > 0:39:41I'm going to get you a prize for being the man to come up with the worst excuse

0:39:41 > 0:39:45for losing a race in a Lamborghini ever!

0:39:45 > 0:39:51- CHILDISH VOICE: "It was the tyres!" - "I blame myself really!

0:39:51 > 0:39:54- "I was driving sideways all day!" - That's fun.

0:39:54 > 0:39:59The important thing is not how fast we went, but how the cars went around the track.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02- And that we both went faster than you.- That's very important.

0:40:02 > 0:40:07I agree with the first part, which is why The Stig did take all the cars around the track.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10Do you want to see the times? ALL: Yes!

0:40:10 > 0:40:16- The Balboni did a very respectable 1.26.9.- Wow.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18Right in there.

0:40:18 > 0:40:23The Murcielago SV did a 1.23.4.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26- There we go!- Unbelievable.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29- That's all we've got for this show - - Oh, no!

0:40:29 > 0:40:32No, no, no. My car.

0:40:32 > 0:40:33Oh, yes. That one, uh,

0:40:33 > 0:40:36did actually go round the track one time.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38The question is, how fast?

0:40:38 > 0:40:42- We've got that lap on tape. Anybody want to see it?- Yes!

0:40:42 > 0:40:44Take it away, Stig!

0:40:46 > 0:40:50And he's off. The launch control puts in 0 to 60

0:40:50 > 0:40:52in somewhere around 3.5 seconds.

0:40:52 > 0:40:56It's an incredible quick car. Carbon brakes, as he cranks it.

0:40:56 > 0:41:00This car weighs under 3,000 pounds, so it's nimble,

0:41:00 > 0:41:04even though he's getting a little bit of understeer through the chicane.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07Just another day at the office, as he cranks into the Teardrop.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09This is the tightest section on the track.

0:41:09 > 0:41:13Two-wheel drive cars have a problem in this corner to get the power down.

0:41:13 > 0:41:19Not the Superleggera, as it races up to 140mph on the straight.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22Just flying by the tyres on that one!

0:41:22 > 0:41:26This is the sketchiest part of the track with the bump mid-corner.

0:41:26 > 0:41:31You can see sparks coming out of the front as those brakes are working.

0:41:31 > 0:41:33The Stig is working, also, inside.

0:41:33 > 0:41:37Little wag of the tail as he comes out of Cameraman's Corner.

0:41:38 > 0:41:43As he comes into the last corner, getting a bit of rotation.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45And yes! APPLAUSE

0:41:45 > 0:41:48It looked very good. It did.

0:41:48 > 0:41:52That was so fast, it changed colours!

0:41:52 > 0:41:55The time on that one was a blisteringly fast...

0:41:55 > 0:41:58..one twenty...

0:41:58 > 0:42:03- ..two point eight.- Yes! My car!

0:42:03 > 0:42:06My car!

0:42:06 > 0:42:08Thank you.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11For a company that started making tractors, that's pretty decent.

0:42:11 > 0:42:15I'd love to see in the south the John Deere sports car!

0:42:15 > 0:42:18That's all I can take for real this time.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21That's all we've got tonight. Goodbye!
