0:00:19 > 0:00:23CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:00:25 > 0:00:26Hello!
0:00:26 > 0:00:28And welcome to Top Gear.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31Tonight, we've got Chris Harris and Sabine Schmitz
0:00:31 > 0:00:33in a motorsports fight to the death.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37And we've got Eddie Jordan, in a surprisingly-tight race suit.
0:00:37 > 0:00:38Something for everyone.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42But first, I want to talk about American stereotypes,
0:00:42 > 0:00:46because some people will tell you that America doesn't do supercars.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50And I have to say that is completely and totally...
0:00:50 > 0:00:52true, actually.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54Over the years, America's made a lot of fast cars -
0:00:54 > 0:00:57Corvettes, Mustangs, Vipers -
0:00:57 > 0:01:00but we've always tended to leave the mid-engined supercar thing
0:01:00 > 0:01:02to the Europeans.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04Well, watch out, Europe,
0:01:04 > 0:01:06because America's coming to git ya!
0:01:09 > 0:01:12This is the new Ford GT.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16Yes, it's American.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18Yes, it's a car.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20And, yes, it is super.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22And for starters, it looks great!
0:01:24 > 0:01:25In fact,
0:01:25 > 0:01:28I think it's the best-looking American car this century.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32Hell, it might just be the best-looking car this century.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44Not only does it look like a proper supercar,
0:01:44 > 0:01:47the GT is made out of proper supercar parts.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50This isn't some lump of iron forged by a blacksmith.
0:01:50 > 0:01:52No, no. This is the real deal.
0:01:56 > 0:02:00It's got sophisticated pushrod hydraulic suspension,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03a whipcrack double-clutch gearbox.
0:02:03 > 0:02:07Practically the whole thing is made out of carbon fibre and aluminum.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10That's right, ALUMINUM.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12It's an American car and we're in America,
0:02:12 > 0:02:13so it's aluminum.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19And all those cutting-edge components are needed
0:02:19 > 0:02:23to manage 647 horsepower.
0:02:23 > 0:02:24That is Major League.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28Major League enough to do 0-60 in three seconds flat.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30That's as quick as the Ferrari 488.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34That's as quick as the McLaren 675 LT.
0:02:34 > 0:02:35That's as quick as...
0:02:35 > 0:02:36Well, that's quick.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40So it's got supercar acceleration,
0:02:40 > 0:02:45but those cars both top out at 205mph,
0:02:45 > 0:02:47which is REALLY fast.
0:02:49 > 0:02:50The Ford GT, however...
0:02:52 > 0:02:54..216mph.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57It's the fastest Ford ever.
0:02:57 > 0:03:01REVVING
0:03:05 > 0:03:09Now, that kind of firepower demands closer inspection.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12And that means no more Pacific Coast Highway.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14RADIO:
0:03:14 > 0:03:17What's that? I can't hear you. I'm going through a tunnel!
0:03:17 > 0:03:18HE CHUCKLES
0:03:20 > 0:03:23No, the Ford GT needs a racetrack.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27Specifically, my favourite racetrack...
0:03:27 > 0:03:29Laguna Seca.
0:03:36 > 0:03:37All right.
0:03:37 > 0:03:41Let's see what it can do. So we put it in track mode.
0:03:43 > 0:03:44Hoh!
0:03:44 > 0:03:46That's nice. Drops down with authority.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49All right. Ready? Here we go.
0:03:52 > 0:03:57Oh, the acceleration is...enormous! Whoo!
0:04:02 > 0:04:06Ford have done some clever stuff with software and fuel injection,
0:04:06 > 0:04:08which they say eliminates turbo lag.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13They keep the turbo spooled up, even when my foot is off the throttle.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16So there's always power.
0:04:16 > 0:04:17ALWAYS!
0:04:20 > 0:04:22And there's plenty of grip, too.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26It's got an active wing out the back
0:04:26 > 0:04:28that keeps the back stuck to the track.
0:04:28 > 0:04:30And it's got active flaps under the nose
0:04:30 > 0:04:33to keep the nose stuck to the track.
0:04:33 > 0:04:35You stick all that together and this thing is...
0:04:36 > 0:04:37..sticky.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41OK, here we come into the Corkscrew at...
0:04:41 > 0:04:43- Ooh,- BLEEP!- That's quick.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52If you were to do that through the Corkscrew at that speed
0:04:52 > 0:04:54in any other Ford - ever! -
0:04:54 > 0:04:57you would be out there in the weeds.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00And that's the thing about this new GT.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03It's not like any other Ford, ever.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09See, here's what happens when a big company like Ford
0:05:09 > 0:05:11tries to do a supercar.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14The designers come up with a gorgeous, sleek concept,
0:05:14 > 0:05:16the engineers try to figure out
0:05:16 > 0:05:18a way to make it go really, really fast
0:05:18 > 0:05:22and, then, the departments get involved.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24There's the guy from the Cup-Holders Department,
0:05:24 > 0:05:28who wants to make sure there's room for his 30-ounce Big Slurp.
0:05:28 > 0:05:29Then there's the guy
0:05:29 > 0:05:32from the Sports And Leisure Luggage Department,
0:05:32 > 0:05:36who wants to make sure there's room for his golf sticks.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40And then there's the guy from the Making Sure Fat Guys Fit Department,
0:05:40 > 0:05:44who wants to make sure there's room for his...
0:05:44 > 0:05:46..fat guy.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48Now, after all their demands have been met,
0:05:48 > 0:05:50you don't have a supercar any more.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53No, no, no. What you have...
0:05:53 > 0:05:54is an SUV.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02But the GT feels like it's been crafted by specialists,
0:06:02 > 0:06:05who knew exactly what they wanted...
0:06:05 > 0:06:06and got it.
0:06:08 > 0:06:13Now, this is hydraulic steering. No fancy electric. It's old school.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16It's got a great feel. Turns in really sharp.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18TYRES SQUEAL
0:06:18 > 0:06:22Ferrari give you a lot of software to help you do neater skids,
0:06:22 > 0:06:24but there's none of that here.
0:06:24 > 0:06:25In this one, you're on your own.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28TYRES SCREECH
0:06:29 > 0:06:31All on your own!
0:06:38 > 0:06:40Oh, my God, the balance is epic!
0:06:43 > 0:06:44LAUGHING: Wow!
0:06:44 > 0:06:47America can't do supercars?!
0:06:47 > 0:06:49Not from where I'm sitting.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53So, come on, what's not to like?
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Well, there is that motor.
0:06:57 > 0:06:58Yeah, it's big on power,
0:06:58 > 0:07:01but, by supercar standards, it's kind of short on cylinders.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06This is a V6 -
0:07:06 > 0:07:10a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, to be exact.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14And that could be a problem.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21Because this car is inspired by the GT40,
0:07:21 > 0:07:24the greatest American race car of all time,
0:07:24 > 0:07:29- powered by one of the most iconic- V8s- ever.
0:07:30 > 0:07:35Created in the 1960s, its aim was to end Ferrari's domination
0:07:35 > 0:07:37at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41Up against Ferrari's highly-strung V12s,
0:07:41 > 0:07:44Ford used the reliable brawn of a seven-litre V8.
0:07:46 > 0:07:47It worked.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49The GT40 didn't just become the first American car
0:07:49 > 0:07:51to win at Le Mans -
0:07:51 > 0:07:54it went one, two, three and locked out the podium.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56Ferrari were humiliated.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58They'd never win Le Mans again.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05Now, listen to the internet and the internet will tell you
0:08:05 > 0:08:10that Ford ditching the V8 in the new GT isn't just misguided,
0:08:10 > 0:08:12it's unpatriotic.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17But the original GT40 didn't have a V8 because it was American -
0:08:17 > 0:08:20it had a V8 because it was the right tool for the job.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23And so is this new V6.
0:08:23 > 0:08:25Yeah, sure, Ford could have stuck a V8 in here,
0:08:25 > 0:08:27but that would have made the car heavier, bigger,
0:08:27 > 0:08:29less aerodynamic, less agile.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35It's just got such a balanced feel. So well sorted. It's just...
0:08:35 > 0:08:36RADIO:
0:08:38 > 0:08:40I still have half a tank of fuel!
0:08:42 > 0:08:43Bunch of...
0:08:46 > 0:08:52As I was saying, the new GT doesn't honour its history by being retro -
0:08:52 > 0:08:55it honours its history by being quick.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59Last year, exactly half a century after the original GT40
0:08:59 > 0:09:03spanked Ferrari at Le Mans, this new GT won its class
0:09:03 > 0:09:05in a 24-hour race and beat Ferrari again.
0:09:07 > 0:09:08What are you going to do?
0:09:10 > 0:09:13This car is SO special.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16Maybe it's the history, maybe it's the pedigree.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20You know what? I'm just going to shut up now.
0:09:20 > 0:09:21I'm just...
0:09:22 > 0:09:23Yeah.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:09:51 > 0:09:52Pretty special.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55- OK.- Pretty special, right?
0:09:57 > 0:10:00This car looks absolutely stunning in that film,
0:10:00 > 0:10:02but I can't believe I am saying this,
0:10:02 > 0:10:04it looks even better in the studio, in the flesh.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07- The way you see those scalloped sides.- Yeah, yeah.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11When we did the film, I had seen photos, but when I saw it in person
0:10:11 > 0:10:14the first time, I just walked around and around and around it.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16It is so good looking.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19It's a great piece of styling and you were the first person,
0:10:19 > 0:10:22- outside the factory, to drive it.- Er, right, yeah.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25Well, apart from the guy who backed it off the truck
0:10:25 > 0:10:28on the Pacific Coast Highway. He was technically the first,
0:10:28 > 0:10:31but then it was... then it was little ol' me.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34I'm profoundly jealous. I love driving cars first, Matthew.
0:10:34 > 0:10:36- You've taken over my role. I'm gutted.- Whoa, whoa, hold on.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39You get to drive everything. You drove the Ferrari FXX-K,
0:10:39 > 0:10:43you drove the Bugatti Chiron, you drove the Volvo Estate
0:10:43 > 0:10:46in Kazakhstan. Come on, now. You need to learn to share.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48You can't have them all.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50In this instance, I can say that's fine.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52But one thing. You didn't mention the price.
0:10:52 > 0:10:57Ah. No, I didn't, because it is very expensive!
0:10:57 > 0:11:02It's about 400,000. About £300,000. That's a lot of money.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06That's more than a 675LT, more than a Ferrari 488.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08Enough to support
0:11:08 > 0:11:10this rather ordinary badge here?
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Yeah. I mean, it's a better supercar.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15So because it is more expensive, it's better?
0:11:15 > 0:11:17Yeah. Yeah.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21Yeah. Look, for too long now, America has been making cars
0:11:21 > 0:11:23that are good value for the money.
0:11:23 > 0:11:25They give you a lot of bang for your buck.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27But that's where we've been going wrong.
0:11:27 > 0:11:29Supercars aren't about bang for your buck.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31You make it stupid expensive
0:11:31 > 0:11:33and people just can't get enough of it.
0:11:33 > 0:11:35There's some logic in that.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38Can I ask one thing? When you did the lowering...
0:11:38 > 0:11:40When you put it in track mode and it... WHOOMPH!
0:11:40 > 0:11:41Please can I, um...? Come on.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44All right. Go on, have a go. Here you go.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Watch this. This is great. - You would, wouldn't you!
0:11:47 > 0:11:48- ALL:- Yes!
0:11:48 > 0:11:49You would. Watch this.
0:11:51 > 0:11:53This is the coolest thing.
0:11:55 > 0:11:56ENGINE EMITS LOW ROAR
0:11:56 > 0:11:58Oh!
0:12:00 > 0:12:03CHRIS CACKLES
0:12:03 > 0:12:05That is just awesome!
0:12:05 > 0:12:07And wait for it.
0:12:07 > 0:12:08Watch it go back up.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15Nice. That's fantastic.
0:12:17 > 0:12:19How do you get out?
0:12:19 > 0:12:20LAUGHTER
0:12:20 > 0:12:24Right. Well, while he figures that out - Rory!
0:12:24 > 0:12:28And, really, it doesn't actually matter how much the Ford GT costs,
0:12:28 > 0:12:30because they're only planning to make 1,000 of them
0:12:30 > 0:12:33and they're sold out ten times over.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36- Unlucky.- That's right, unlucky.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39All right. Now, it's time to welcome this week's guest.
0:12:39 > 0:12:43That's right. He's won six Olympic gold medals.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46He's one of the fastest men ever on two wheels
0:12:46 > 0:12:51and his legs make more torque than a Ferrari F12.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53Please welcome Sir Chris Hoy.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:13:01 > 0:13:04How you doing, mate? Hi, Matt, How's it going?
0:13:04 > 0:13:06- Welcome.- Thank you. Hi, Rory. Thank you.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11Wow!
0:13:11 > 0:13:13This is exciting, isn't it?
0:13:14 > 0:13:18- That is a nice... That is a nice welcome, yeah.- Fantastic.
0:13:18 > 0:13:19- So...- Great to be here.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21..over 500 pound-feet of torque in those legs?
0:13:21 > 0:13:25- 700 newton metres, whatever that is in the old...- That's a lot.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27It's quite a lot. Less now. I'm retired now.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30- Less?- It's like a vintage car, loses power over the years.- Got you.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33So maybe human figures by this point, you think?
0:13:33 > 0:13:36Yeah, it's been a while since I've tested them, but who knows?
0:13:36 > 0:13:39And you love your cars. What did you drive down here in today?
0:13:39 > 0:13:43I drove down in an RS6 Estate. Nice family car. Quite sensible.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46I hear it's been breathed on just a little?
0:13:46 > 0:13:48A little bit. It's got a loud exhaust
0:13:48 > 0:13:51and maybe a few little extra horses in there.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53- But it's... - It has 730 horsepower, dude.
0:13:53 > 0:13:56Yeah, well, you need them, don't you? You need them.
0:13:56 > 0:13:57LAUGHTER
0:13:57 > 0:14:00Now, last year, you did something I've always wanted to do -
0:14:00 > 0:14:02you raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06Oh, it was unbelievable. Just incredible. An amazing experience.
0:14:06 > 0:14:08It exceeded everything, on every level,
0:14:08 > 0:14:11that I was looking forward to, getting into it.
0:14:11 > 0:14:12Yeah, a huge amount of fun.
0:14:12 > 0:14:15Now, a couple of years ago, you drove a Nissan GTR
0:14:15 > 0:14:17at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, didn't you?
0:14:17 > 0:14:19How did that go? You know what? We have a clip.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23- I knew you would bring this up! - Let's look at this tape here.
0:14:25 > 0:14:27Nice. There we go.
0:14:27 > 0:14:28SCREECHING
0:14:28 > 0:14:30Oh!
0:14:31 > 0:14:33CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:14:33 > 0:14:35Thanks for reminding me about that one(!)
0:14:35 > 0:14:37I love the bow at the end!
0:14:37 > 0:14:40Well, you know, I sat in the car afterwards and I just thought,
0:14:40 > 0:14:42"I wonder, if I wait here long enough,
0:14:42 > 0:14:44"they might all just go home."
0:14:44 > 0:14:45Oh, horrendous.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48There's a corner called Molecomb, it's a left-hander,
0:14:48 > 0:14:50and they all told me, before I got there,
0:14:50 > 0:14:51"If you can see the corner, or if you wait to brake
0:14:51 > 0:14:53"before you see the corner, it's too late."
0:14:53 > 0:14:55I remember going over the crest of the hill,
0:14:55 > 0:14:59seeing the corner, still flat, and I thought, "Uh-oh."
0:14:59 > 0:15:02- You were committed, certainly. - It was full commitment.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05At least I was... I wasn't holding back.
0:15:05 > 0:15:07The worst thing was... Not the worst thing,
0:15:07 > 0:15:11but one of the bad things was it was the CEO,
0:15:11 > 0:15:14Andy Palmer's personal car, one of only two NISMO GT-Rs in the country,
0:15:14 > 0:15:17brand-new, he hadn't even driven it yet.
0:15:17 > 0:15:19And...
0:15:19 > 0:15:21- Nor would he ever!- Well, exactly.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23I saw him after I got out of the car,
0:15:23 > 0:15:25and he was very good about it, he said,
0:15:25 > 0:15:27"We can replace cars, we can't replace people."
0:15:27 > 0:15:29He was quite happy, because it showed
0:15:29 > 0:15:31how great the airbags and the safety was.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34I went through four rows of hay bales and came out unscathed.
0:15:34 > 0:15:36So you've raced at Le Mans. What's next?
0:15:36 > 0:15:40I'm aiming to be the first person to cycle across Antarctica.
0:15:40 > 0:15:44And also cycle to the South Pole on the way to doing that.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46It's something I never thought I'd do,
0:15:46 > 0:15:49it's completely out there, quite a strange challenge,
0:15:49 > 0:15:50but it's a huge challenge,
0:15:50 > 0:15:53and to be the first person to do that would be pretty cool.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55Hmm.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57That killed the conversation, didn't it?
0:15:57 > 0:15:59LAUGHTER No, no, I'm just...
0:15:59 > 0:16:01No, I think that's...
0:16:01 > 0:16:02Why would you do that?
0:16:02 > 0:16:04Why would I do it? Well...
0:16:04 > 0:16:07You know, it's not one of these places you go to on holiday.
0:16:07 > 0:16:08No, you don't.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11You're not going to end up at the South Pole by accident.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13I just, I like to do things that challenge me, that push me.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16And to go somewhere that I never thought
0:16:16 > 0:16:18I would ever get the chance to do, or to go to,
0:16:18 > 0:16:21and to challenge myself in a way I've never been challenged before.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24But, yeah, it's just... Why not? I suppose is the answer.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27Is that something you're going to do by yourself?
0:16:27 > 0:16:28No, we're trying to find somebody
0:16:28 > 0:16:30- that's stupid enough to do it with me.- Good luck!
0:16:30 > 0:16:33We're chatting to a few people just now.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36It's a big undertaking, it will be a lot of training,
0:16:36 > 0:16:37a lot of preparation.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40We're going to Iceland soon to test a new bike,
0:16:40 > 0:16:43we will actually design and build a new bike for this project.
0:16:43 > 0:16:45Going to have to be able to deal with
0:16:45 > 0:16:47minus whatever the temperatures will be out there.
0:16:47 > 0:16:51- Yeah.- Apparently it's 25 degrees cooler at the South Pole
0:16:51 > 0:16:54- than it is in Iceland, which is pretty cold already.- Whoa.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57Maybe put a cab around it and a motor, call it a truck!
0:16:57 > 0:16:59LAUGHTER
0:16:59 > 0:17:02I'd go with you, but I've got a thing I've got to do, I couldn't...
0:17:03 > 0:17:06What do you say we take a look at your training lap with Chris Harris?
0:17:06 > 0:17:08How did that go out there?
0:17:08 > 0:17:11It was... I'm going to get my excuses in early, I think.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13It was greasy, wet.
0:17:13 > 0:17:15Chris was very good, though,
0:17:15 > 0:17:17he wasn't shouting at me, he wasn't grumpy.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20You're a lot bigger than him. LAUGHTER
0:17:20 > 0:17:22I assume what you're aiming for is to knock Max Whitlock
0:17:22 > 0:17:25off the top of the leaderboard, right? Gold versus gold?
0:17:25 > 0:17:28For the pride of my sport versus gymnastics,
0:17:28 > 0:17:29it'd be great to be up there.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32Yeah, yeah. You're a sport that has wheels.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35Yeah. I've got some advantage. He'll be...
0:17:35 > 0:17:36Well, he's smaller, he's lighter,
0:17:36 > 0:17:39he takes good instruction from his coaches,
0:17:39 > 0:17:41- he can learn routines, so he should be good.- OK.
0:17:41 > 0:17:45- It was a good lap he set.- Very modest. Is that how you really feel?
0:17:46 > 0:17:48Let's take a look.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51- Forget everything else, there are two words that matter today.- OK.
0:17:51 > 0:17:54"Max" and "Whitlock".
0:17:54 > 0:17:55You have to beat him.
0:17:55 > 0:17:57Yeah, but he did it in the dry.
0:17:57 > 0:17:59Oh, God, you're like a real racing driver - all the excuses.
0:17:59 > 0:18:00Let's go! First gear.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06- Over to the right-hand side. - Get in, you bugger!
0:18:06 > 0:18:08There's several others in there.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16He's showboating now! Over to the right.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18Braking hard at the hundred.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21- Oh, hundred?- Third gear. - What the hell is that?- Third gear.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25A bit of pommel-horse work there.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32ONE PERSON APPLAUDING
0:18:34 > 0:18:37That is just...
0:18:37 > 0:18:39TEARFULLY: That is just beautiful.
0:18:41 > 0:18:42Oh, that...
0:18:43 > 0:18:44Oh!
0:18:46 > 0:18:49- Third gear.- Get it in third. - There we go. That's fifth gear.
0:18:49 > 0:18:53- Max didn't do that. - Come on! Come on!- Fourth gear.
0:18:56 > 0:18:59Trail it all the way in and get the thing tippy-toed.
0:18:59 > 0:19:00- Carry it more...- Yeah, yeah.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05Good car control, that man!
0:19:06 > 0:19:10Over the line! We're in. Star pupil.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12- That was a bit better, that one. - Star pupil!
0:19:12 > 0:19:15So you've taught me everything you know? All the local knowledge?
0:19:15 > 0:19:17- Of course I have, I've told you all my tricks.- Brilliant.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19HE MOUTHS
0:19:19 > 0:19:22APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:19:22 > 0:19:24Well done, man.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28That looked really good, though.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31In those conditions, with no distractions whatsoever...
0:19:33 > 0:19:36I just about locked up on the brakes and went straight into him.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39- He was lucky I didn't hit him.- Yeah! - Could have been messy.
0:19:39 > 0:19:41Yeah, could have been. Chris, what do you think?
0:19:41 > 0:19:42Very, very high hopes.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45I think he's the star pupil, as I said in the car.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47He's got all the car control.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50If the conditions are there, I'm expecting great things. No pressure.
0:19:50 > 0:19:52Thanks, mate.
0:19:52 > 0:19:54We'll get to your timed lap a little bit later in the show.
0:19:54 > 0:19:56OK, now, moving on. For the last few months,
0:19:56 > 0:19:58there's been an argument brewing in the office -
0:19:58 > 0:20:01who is Top Gear's quickest driver?
0:20:01 > 0:20:05Well, obviously, that's The Stig, but who's second quickest?
0:20:05 > 0:20:08According to racing driver Sabine Schmitz, it's...
0:20:08 > 0:20:09Sabine Schmitz,
0:20:09 > 0:20:12and according to racing driver Chris Harris, it's Chris Harris.
0:20:12 > 0:20:15So we decided to settle the argument, once and for all.
0:20:15 > 0:20:17Sabine versus Chris.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19All we needed was a place to race.
0:20:27 > 0:20:29The Mojave Desert.
0:20:30 > 0:20:33Once a year, this Californian wilderness is transformed
0:20:33 > 0:20:36into a sprawling city of die-hard race fans.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42Whoo! This is what I call a proper playground!
0:20:42 > 0:20:44Look at the size of it!
0:20:47 > 0:20:50To decide which of us is quickest, apart from The Stig,
0:20:50 > 0:20:52we'd been sent to The King Of The Hammers -
0:20:52 > 0:20:56one of the most-extreme off-road events on the planet.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00Competing here requires specialist skill.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03High-speed, low-grip racing across desert flats
0:21:03 > 0:21:06meets complex technical rock crawls
0:21:06 > 0:21:09over near-vertical boulder-strewn faces...
0:21:11 > 0:21:13..where one mistake can mean disaster.
0:21:16 > 0:21:18Well, all I can say is...
0:21:18 > 0:21:21what a perfect place for you to lose!
0:21:21 > 0:21:24What?! I'm not going to lose.
0:21:24 > 0:21:25Come on.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35Welcome to Hammer Town.
0:21:36 > 0:21:4135,000 fans all gathered to watch the motorsport equivalent
0:21:41 > 0:21:42of cage fighting.
0:21:42 > 0:21:45And as if that wasn't intimidating enough,
0:21:45 > 0:21:48the next morning we'd been entered into something called
0:21:48 > 0:21:50the Legends Class.
0:21:51 > 0:21:54And we'd be driving these.
0:21:54 > 0:21:57That is an Ultra 4 buggy.
0:21:58 > 0:21:59Holy moly.
0:22:00 > 0:22:04Over 100,000 of custom-made 500 horsepower
0:22:04 > 0:22:07V8 off-roader with four-wheel drive,
0:22:07 > 0:22:10long travel shocks and 40-inch tyres.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14One slight issue here, Sabine.
0:22:14 > 0:22:15- This is your vehicle.- Yeah.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18There are big dents in the roll cage, and if I just, um...
0:22:21 > 0:22:24Yeah, this vehicle's been on its roof several times, Sabine.
0:22:24 > 0:22:26But that's standard, isn't it?
0:22:26 > 0:22:28- I'm not afraid. - For you maybe, not for me.
0:22:28 > 0:22:30I've never rolled a racing car in my life.
0:22:30 > 0:22:33I've rolled a couple.
0:22:33 > 0:22:35Are you not worried by this?
0:22:35 > 0:22:37I can't wait, actually.
0:22:37 > 0:22:39Don't cry, Harris, please.
0:22:39 > 0:22:41This is so cool!
0:22:41 > 0:22:43Huh?
0:22:46 > 0:22:49Not convinced, I went to find some reassurance
0:22:49 > 0:22:51from the event organiser.
0:22:52 > 0:22:57- So, Dave, you are literally King of the Hammers.- Evidently, yeah.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59- This is your event. - This is my event, yeah.
0:22:59 > 0:23:03The million-dollar question for me is the inversion thing.
0:23:03 > 0:23:06- Yeah, I heard you haven't rolled before.- No.
0:23:06 > 0:23:09Today's your day. THEY LAUGH
0:23:09 > 0:23:12This is going into something knowing that you're going to get hurt.
0:23:12 > 0:23:14I'm not sure about this at all. This is absolutely insane.
0:23:14 > 0:23:17Neither one of these guys here finished this race last year
0:23:17 > 0:23:19because they both broke their backs during the race
0:23:19 > 0:23:21and had to be flown out.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23Just drive as slow as you can.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25Then you're safe.
0:23:25 > 0:23:26Are you listening to what he's saying?
0:23:26 > 0:23:28He said they broke their backs!
0:23:28 > 0:23:31- Given what you know about our driving background...- Yes.
0:23:31 > 0:23:35..give an honest assessment of our chances in these things.
0:23:35 > 0:23:38She's going to kill it, you're not going to make it.
0:23:38 > 0:23:40Anybody that can drive a van around the Nurburgring
0:23:40 > 0:23:41is willing to try different things.
0:23:41 > 0:23:43Plus I heard she's already been upside-down,
0:23:43 > 0:23:44and you're worried about it.
0:23:44 > 0:23:46So you'll drive scared and be upside-down anyway,
0:23:46 > 0:23:48she's going to kill it.
0:23:50 > 0:23:51Hmm.
0:23:53 > 0:23:57With Dave having been no help whatsoever,
0:23:57 > 0:24:00we were given the afternoon and a veteran driver each
0:24:00 > 0:24:04to familiarise ourselves with the cars and the terrain.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07I had been paired with former X Games gold medallist
0:24:07 > 0:24:11and legendary motivational speaker Chris Ridgeway.
0:24:11 > 0:24:12You're pretty much going to be OK.
0:24:16 > 0:24:21While Dave had kindly offered Sabine the help of his son, Bailey.
0:24:21 > 0:24:23Ready for this crazy adventure?
0:24:23 > 0:24:24SABINE LAUGHS
0:24:24 > 0:24:28I'm in a little bit better shape than Chris.
0:24:28 > 0:24:31So first up were the desert flats.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34Sounds straightforward.
0:24:44 > 0:24:46Bloody hell! Whoa!
0:24:47 > 0:24:48That's insane!
0:24:49 > 0:24:52And I'm supposed to do this myself, am I?
0:24:52 > 0:24:56'In my defence, I've never been a good passenger.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58'But, annoyingly, Sabine was having a blast.'
0:25:01 > 0:25:03Whooooo!
0:25:06 > 0:25:07SHE LAUGHS AND SHRIEKS
0:25:08 > 0:25:10Whooo!
0:25:13 > 0:25:15- Having a good time?- Yes!
0:25:15 > 0:25:17SHE LAUGHS
0:25:17 > 0:25:21Soon, though, it was our turn to take the wheel.
0:25:24 > 0:25:26Ah, now we're talking!
0:25:29 > 0:25:33This isn't like a street car that you're used to driving.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35- You've got to hammer the thing. - Yeah.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37You're hard on the brakes, hard on the throttle.
0:25:41 > 0:25:44Full throttle, give it some gas.
0:25:44 > 0:25:45- OK, honey!- Give it a little gas.
0:25:45 > 0:25:47ENGINE ROARS There you go!
0:25:47 > 0:25:48Whoohoo!
0:25:51 > 0:25:54The suspension is incredible.
0:25:54 > 0:25:58But there is this lurking feeling it could roll any time.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00That's correct.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03Just as I was starting to get the hang of it, though,
0:26:03 > 0:26:05I asked a stupid question.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10Now, how many injuries have you had?
0:26:10 > 0:26:12I've had a few.
0:26:12 > 0:26:16I start with the easy stuff, like the broken arms and legs.
0:26:16 > 0:26:17But, er...
0:26:17 > 0:26:20A rebuilt wrist, and knees and ankles.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23There was that one time I got my leg cut off.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25- What?!- Yeah.
0:26:25 > 0:26:27Yeah, that was a bad day at the office.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29Oh, my Godfather.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35And with that, we made our way back to Hammer Town.
0:26:35 > 0:26:39Where my confidence took another blow.
0:26:39 > 0:26:42I'm kind of up for anything to do with going fast in cars,
0:26:42 > 0:26:44but I'm not so sure about this.
0:26:44 > 0:26:47I've just been ragdolled around by some lunatic,
0:26:47 > 0:26:51and now I'm told that this happened yesterday to some poor soul -
0:26:51 > 0:26:52electrical fire.
0:26:53 > 0:26:55He used the phrase, "We barely got out."
0:26:55 > 0:26:56I thought that was plastic.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59That's aluminium, melted.
0:26:59 > 0:27:01Um...
0:27:01 > 0:27:03I think I've bitten off more than I can chew here.
0:27:05 > 0:27:07'It was clear we needed more practice.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09'But before we could head back out,
0:27:09 > 0:27:12'we were told we'd each be getting some help
0:27:12 > 0:27:13'from a team manager.'
0:27:16 > 0:27:20- I can't have Eddie.- I don't want Eddie!- I don't want Eddie.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22- I don't...- I- don't want Eddie.
0:27:22 > 0:27:26- Hello!- Hi!- Welcome to the desert. - Hi, Eddie!
0:27:26 > 0:27:27What a lovely surprise. Gentlemen.
0:27:27 > 0:27:31- Edward.- Sabine, how are you? - Hello!- Nice to see you.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33- OK, so...- So I must be with...
0:27:33 > 0:27:35- We've had a coin toss. You...- Yeah?
0:27:35 > 0:27:36..are with Eddie.
0:27:36 > 0:27:38- Whoohoo!- And I am with Sabine.
0:27:38 > 0:27:41Come on, give me a hug.
0:27:41 > 0:27:43Give me a hug. Are we going to win?
0:27:43 > 0:27:44Yes, we're going to win.
0:27:44 > 0:27:47- He's nervous, isn't he? - Guys. Here we go.
0:27:47 > 0:27:51- Along here, this is our line. - That's it.- That's fine, that's fine.
0:27:51 > 0:27:53This is the line in the sand right there.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56- OK. Toes on the line. - They are the enemy.
0:27:56 > 0:27:58- OK, I've got you, Edward. I've got you.- You sure?- Yeah.
0:27:58 > 0:28:01- So it's on?- It's on, it's on. - It's on.
0:28:04 > 0:28:08So, heading back out to our desert training area,
0:28:08 > 0:28:10it was time to tackle rock crawling.
0:28:10 > 0:28:14And with our team managers on board, they got straight down to business.
0:28:14 > 0:28:17You know what I have a good feeling about?
0:28:17 > 0:28:19I am going to blank Matt LeBlanc.
0:28:19 > 0:28:22Ha-ha! I'm not going to speak to him.
0:28:22 > 0:28:26I'm just going to eyeball him, and I'm just going to stare into him.
0:28:26 > 0:28:27Stare into me?
0:28:27 > 0:28:29That's...creepy.
0:28:29 > 0:28:31Anyway, I had plans of my own.
0:28:31 > 0:28:34We need to try to get in Chris Harris' head a little bit.
0:28:34 > 0:28:37- Ja?- We need to try to ask him, "Are you sure you will be OK?
0:28:37 > 0:28:39"You sure you're going to be all right?"
0:28:39 > 0:28:42- Because his confidence is easy to shatter.- OK.- OK?
0:28:44 > 0:28:48Actually, it wasn't my confidence they needed to worry about.
0:28:50 > 0:28:51SABINE SHRIEKS
0:28:55 > 0:28:57- We got bloody stuck! - SHE CHUCKLES
0:29:02 > 0:29:04What on earth have they got themselves into?
0:29:04 > 0:29:06They are properly stuck.
0:29:06 > 0:29:08Stuck?
0:29:08 > 0:29:11No, no, no. This is Sabine Schmitz we're talking about.
0:29:14 > 0:29:16Both sides!
0:29:24 > 0:29:26THEY CHEER
0:29:30 > 0:29:33- Ha-ha!- Well, well, well. How was that?
0:29:33 > 0:29:36Did you enjoy your time in the mountains, then?
0:29:36 > 0:29:38- A little bit. - Was there a problem with the car?
0:29:38 > 0:29:40Well, we went the difficult way, you went the easy way.
0:29:40 > 0:29:43- We traced exactly the same route as yours.- I don't think you did.
0:29:43 > 0:29:46- And it's not "ROUT", it's "ROOT". - Tell them they went a different way.
0:29:46 > 0:29:48Surely... They are the king of the practice,
0:29:48 > 0:29:50we are the kings of the race.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52Let's have a beer, I am bloody thirsty.
0:29:52 > 0:29:54- Nice job. - Hanging around in the rocks.
0:29:54 > 0:29:56Way to go, right around that hard section.
0:29:56 > 0:29:58Drive slowly and safe.
0:29:58 > 0:29:59I'm feeling good now.
0:29:59 > 0:30:01- I'm done with them... - We've done enough today.
0:30:01 > 0:30:04I thought you were going to ignore him and not talk to him.
0:30:04 > 0:30:05- You said...- Oh.
0:30:05 > 0:30:08You've just spent ten minutes talking to him.
0:30:14 > 0:30:17With our day's practice drawing to a close,
0:30:17 > 0:30:19we headed back to Hammer Town
0:30:19 > 0:30:23and joined the thousands of fans settling down for the night.
0:30:23 > 0:30:26And with the next day's race looming even larger,
0:30:26 > 0:30:29Chris was a little preoccupied.
0:30:29 > 0:30:35There are actually at least eight other locals in our race tomorrow
0:30:35 > 0:30:37and I'm looking at the runners and riders here,
0:30:37 > 0:30:39they're a bit good.
0:30:39 > 0:30:42I think we're fighting over penultimate and last.
0:30:42 > 0:30:45I feel like your confidence is a bit shattered.
0:30:45 > 0:30:47You know they airlifted four guys out of here today?
0:30:47 > 0:30:50- Was it four or five? - I know what you're trying to do.
0:30:50 > 0:30:51What am I trying to do?
0:30:51 > 0:30:54I care about you, I want you to know what you're getting into.
0:30:54 > 0:30:57What do you mean they airlifted people out from here?
0:30:57 > 0:30:59Big wrecks. I mean, full-on... HE WHISTLES
0:30:59 > 0:31:01Cartwheel wrecks, bad stuff.
0:31:01 > 0:31:02SABINE LAUGHS
0:31:02 > 0:31:04When you were managing F1 teams,
0:31:04 > 0:31:08was there any, like, motivational speeches before the race,
0:31:08 > 0:31:10the night before, anything you told them to do?
0:31:10 > 0:31:14The drivers would be sent to bed, at the latest, ten o'clock.
0:31:14 > 0:31:16But prior to that, they'd all have a massage.
0:31:16 > 0:31:20- Massage?- Massage?- A massage.
0:31:20 > 0:31:21What type of...?
0:31:23 > 0:31:25Well, I don't know - that's between Eddie and Chris.
0:31:25 > 0:31:27THEY LAUGH
0:31:29 > 0:31:31If that's what he needs to do for his driver,
0:31:31 > 0:31:33that's what he does for his driver, it's got nothing to do with us.
0:31:38 > 0:31:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:31:42 > 0:31:47All right. Now, we'll see the second half of that film
0:31:47 > 0:31:48a little later on in the show.
0:31:48 > 0:31:51Chris, have you done any off-road driving?
0:31:51 > 0:31:52Nothing like that.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55I did drive a Dakar rally car a few years ago in Morocco.
0:31:55 > 0:31:57That was pretty cool.
0:31:57 > 0:31:58But I drove Colin McRae's
0:31:58 > 0:32:041995 replica World Championship-winning car
0:32:04 > 0:32:07about three or four years ago,
0:32:07 > 0:32:11on the final stage, where he won his world title in Wales in the GB Rally
0:32:11 > 0:32:12and that was amazing.
0:32:12 > 0:32:14He's a massive, massive hero of mine,
0:32:14 > 0:32:16so that was a privilege to do that.
0:32:16 > 0:32:17All right, guys, have a look at this.
0:32:17 > 0:32:20In the studio, we've got a brand-new car
0:32:20 > 0:32:22that's going to compete in a brand-new race series
0:32:22 > 0:32:25that's going to make F1 look like the Stone Age.
0:32:25 > 0:32:30700 horsepower, all carbon fibre, and the best thing of all,
0:32:30 > 0:32:33it was designed by the same guy who did the Tron Light Cycles.
0:32:33 > 0:32:37- Wow! That's really cool-looking. - Yeah.
0:32:37 > 0:32:41Just one tiny...tiny question -
0:32:41 > 0:32:42where does the driver sit?
0:32:42 > 0:32:45There is no driver. This is a Robocar.
0:32:45 > 0:32:47It's a self-racing racer.
0:32:47 > 0:32:48Basically, in a couple of years,
0:32:48 > 0:32:5120 of these things will be hooning around the track,
0:32:51 > 0:32:53competing against each other.
0:32:53 > 0:32:55Robot versus robot. How cool is that?
0:32:55 > 0:32:56I genuinely don't understand it, Rory.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59So we're supposed to get excited about one robot
0:32:59 > 0:33:01racing another robot?
0:33:01 > 0:33:04It's robots having a race.
0:33:04 > 0:33:06What do you not understand about that?
0:33:06 > 0:33:08There's something fundamental missing, dude - the driver!
0:33:08 > 0:33:10AUDIENCE MURMURS IN AGREEMENT
0:33:10 > 0:33:12We go to watch motor racing
0:33:12 > 0:33:14to see gladiators controlling machines,
0:33:14 > 0:33:16going wheel to wheel.
0:33:16 > 0:33:20Not to watch one processor having a go at another bloke called Intel.
0:33:20 > 0:33:22It just doesn't... It's utterly meaningless.
0:33:22 > 0:33:25It's a great-looking thing and I'm sure it's fast.
0:33:25 > 0:33:26What do you reckon?
0:33:26 > 0:33:28- Yeah, I have to agree - sorry, Rory. - All right.
0:33:28 > 0:33:32I love innovation, new technology, but it's about the human element.
0:33:32 > 0:33:35You have to care about the person that's driving it.
0:33:35 > 0:33:36You know what you could do?
0:33:38 > 0:33:39You could put some jockeys on it.
0:33:39 > 0:33:41You know what I mean?
0:33:41 > 0:33:42- LAUGHING:- Now you're talking!
0:33:42 > 0:33:45Could put maybe some foot pegs back here,
0:33:45 > 0:33:48couple of clip-ons here, get on the thing like this...
0:33:48 > 0:33:50LAUGHTER
0:33:50 > 0:33:51And off they go.
0:33:51 > 0:33:53APPLAUSE
0:33:54 > 0:33:57And then the last one on the car wins.
0:33:57 > 0:33:59You could be the first one to try it.
0:33:59 > 0:34:01You know what? I'm good, I'm good.
0:34:01 > 0:34:03So, over the last few weeks,
0:34:03 > 0:34:06I've been serving up a whole bunch of amazing electric cars
0:34:06 > 0:34:09and Matt and Chris keep batting them down
0:34:09 > 0:34:11because, well, they fear progress.
0:34:11 > 0:34:14But there's a new Nissan that I think could change their minds
0:34:14 > 0:34:17and, earlier today, I went out to meet it on our track.
0:34:17 > 0:34:21This is the Nissan Blade Glider and it's an electric concept car.
0:34:21 > 0:34:25But here's the difference - this one actually drives, fast.
0:34:25 > 0:34:28And it's got three seats, so it's the perfect way
0:34:28 > 0:34:31to convert a couple of electric car sceptics.
0:34:33 > 0:34:35What is, er... What is this?
0:34:35 > 0:34:39Gentlemen, behold the future. What do you think?
0:34:39 > 0:34:40What is it?
0:34:40 > 0:34:41Well, it's the Blade Glider.
0:34:41 > 0:34:44It actually drifts - it's got a built-in drift mode.
0:34:44 > 0:34:46It's made for skidding!
0:34:46 > 0:34:48- Really?- That's very exciting, but looks like you'd get
0:34:48 > 0:34:50a grant on the NHS for it, but other than that...
0:34:50 > 0:34:52- So you say it drifts? - Want to have a go?
0:34:52 > 0:34:55Yes, I think we should drive it. At least we might be drier inside.
0:34:55 > 0:34:58- Oh, there's no roof. - LAUGHING:- No, there's no roof.
0:34:58 > 0:35:00- Now I've got your interest. - You have.
0:35:00 > 0:35:03If it drifts, of course, I'm driving, Rory, not you.
0:35:03 > 0:35:05- Sorry about that. - Get in. Here we go.
0:35:11 > 0:35:13How the hell do you shut the door?
0:35:13 > 0:35:14Is there a button?
0:35:14 > 0:35:16THEY LAUGH
0:35:19 > 0:35:21There you go. Oh, yeah. I mean...
0:35:25 > 0:35:27- What's the horsepower?- 260-odd?
0:35:27 > 0:35:29264 horses, gentlemen.
0:35:30 > 0:35:33Top speed of at least 115mph.
0:35:33 > 0:35:35That's impressive.
0:35:35 > 0:35:36For a garbage truck.
0:35:36 > 0:35:38For a sports car, maybe not so much.
0:35:38 > 0:35:40Where's the accelerator? There we go.
0:35:42 > 0:35:45Well, it feels pretty frisky from the driver's seat, guys.
0:35:45 > 0:35:48It just feels like it's ready to drift, doesn't it?
0:35:48 > 0:35:50Rory, you might be persuading me
0:35:50 > 0:35:53about the validity of electric cars here.
0:35:57 > 0:35:59TYRES SCREECH
0:35:59 > 0:36:01Yes!
0:36:01 > 0:36:03THEY LAUGH
0:36:03 > 0:36:05He loves it! He loves it.
0:36:05 > 0:36:07I think he's having a good time!
0:36:14 > 0:36:15TYRES SCREECH
0:36:15 > 0:36:17Whoa!
0:36:18 > 0:36:20LAUGHTER
0:36:20 > 0:36:22That's not bad.
0:36:22 > 0:36:24For me, it's a philosophical point.
0:36:24 > 0:36:27It's fun - I don't care about all the cleverness.
0:36:27 > 0:36:29Someone's just gone, "Let's make it fun."
0:36:29 > 0:36:30There you go, there you go.
0:36:30 > 0:36:32It is fun.
0:36:32 > 0:36:33All right, chuck it in here, fast.
0:36:40 > 0:36:42Yes! Nice one!
0:36:42 > 0:36:43Woohoo!
0:36:45 > 0:36:49What do you call an electric doughnut?
0:36:49 > 0:36:50That's the name of my new band.
0:36:50 > 0:36:53THEY LAUGH
0:36:53 > 0:36:55So what do we think?
0:36:55 > 0:36:56A winner?
0:36:56 > 0:36:58Yeah, I think so. Chris?
0:36:58 > 0:37:00- Thumbs up from me, definitely. - Yeah. I like it.
0:37:00 > 0:37:02All right - one more lap before we go?
0:37:02 > 0:37:04- Definitely.- Can I drive?
0:37:04 > 0:37:07- No.- No. Where does it say, "Traction control off"?
0:37:07 > 0:37:08Good, right, let's go.
0:37:08 > 0:37:11CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:37:13 > 0:37:14- Pretty fun.- There you go.
0:37:14 > 0:37:18- I didn't think it was going to be fun.- Oh, come on.
0:37:18 > 0:37:21I know I convinced you guys in the end,
0:37:21 > 0:37:23but, Chris, what's your feeling on electric cars?
0:37:23 > 0:37:25Well, electric cars in general,
0:37:25 > 0:37:27I thought the whole point is it's about being eco-friendly,
0:37:27 > 0:37:30about being green and sensible.
0:37:30 > 0:37:32- I mean, that looked like a lot of fun.- Yeah.
0:37:32 > 0:37:34- You could convert me, potentially. - All right.
0:37:34 > 0:37:37I was so convinced, honestly.
0:37:37 > 0:37:39I don't really buy into so much of it,
0:37:39 > 0:37:42but the fun message - that thing reeked of fun.
0:37:42 > 0:37:43It was wonderful.
0:37:43 > 0:37:45- We were smiling, all three of us. - Yeah, it was great.
0:37:45 > 0:37:47The looks, I think the jury's still out
0:37:47 > 0:37:48on the looks of the thing, but...
0:37:48 > 0:37:49- And the doors.- And the doors.
0:37:49 > 0:37:51- And the roof.- Yeah.
0:37:51 > 0:37:55The door you can't reach to close once you get in is difficult.
0:37:55 > 0:37:59All right - now, I think it's time to see how you did
0:37:59 > 0:38:00in your timed lap around the track.
0:38:00 > 0:38:05But before we do, after you finished your time in the car with Chris,
0:38:05 > 0:38:08you went out and had one more go on your own, didn't you?
0:38:08 > 0:38:09- I did, yes.- What happened?
0:38:10 > 0:38:13Well, I just like to think that I was pushing,
0:38:13 > 0:38:15trying to find the limits of the car,
0:38:15 > 0:38:17the track, the grip,
0:38:17 > 0:38:19finding how far I could push it
0:38:19 > 0:38:23and I essentially just touched the outside kerb on the follow-through,
0:38:23 > 0:38:25just enough so it started to lose it.
0:38:25 > 0:38:28Thought I'd caught it, but...yeah, didn't.
0:38:28 > 0:38:30We have it on tape. You want to see it?
0:38:30 > 0:38:33- Have you? I thought you might! - Let's take a look at that.
0:38:35 > 0:38:38TYRES SCREECH
0:38:38 > 0:38:40Oh!
0:38:40 > 0:38:43Oh, oh, oh, oh! AUDIENCE OOHS
0:38:45 > 0:38:47Couple of points here.
0:38:47 > 0:38:49LAUGHTER
0:38:49 > 0:38:52First of all, well done for not dying.
0:38:52 > 0:38:53Yeah, yeah, that's good.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55- Next, the way I see this...- Yeah.
0:38:55 > 0:38:57..Michael Schumacher's race weekends
0:38:57 > 0:38:59always started off with him pushing too far, didn't it?
0:38:59 > 0:39:01Always go too far, find the limits
0:39:01 > 0:39:04- before you actually get into the competitive aspect.- There we go.
0:39:04 > 0:39:06- That's what you were doing. - That's it.
0:39:06 > 0:39:08You were getting rid of all of those negative urges,
0:39:08 > 0:39:10getting all the bad stuff out the way,
0:39:10 > 0:39:12ready for a perfect performance.
0:39:12 > 0:39:13It's like auto mechanics.
0:39:13 > 0:39:16You tighten the bolt till it snaps, then you back off a quarter-turn.
0:39:16 > 0:39:18LAUGHTER
0:39:18 > 0:39:21But you did manage to eventually complete a lap, yeah?
0:39:21 > 0:39:22I got a lap in, but...
0:39:22 > 0:39:25Yeah, well, it wasn't a perfect lap.
0:39:25 > 0:39:27- Are you ready? - I'm ready. Let's do it.
0:39:27 > 0:39:29OK - who wants to see his lap?
0:39:29 > 0:39:31- AUDIENCE:- Yeah!
0:39:31 > 0:39:32Here we go.
0:39:32 > 0:39:34OK, off the line.
0:39:34 > 0:39:37Bit of clutch riding, but I think that was a good start.
0:39:37 > 0:39:38This is the one, this is the one.
0:39:38 > 0:39:40Bit of self-encouragement as well.
0:39:42 > 0:39:46Oh, yes - getting the car rotated under brakes. That was fast.
0:39:46 > 0:39:47- Third gear through there?- Yeah.
0:39:47 > 0:39:50Using all the track, and a little bit more, too - that's good.
0:39:50 > 0:39:52Messy, messy.
0:39:53 > 0:39:55A little bit of tail-wagging, but that's fast.
0:39:55 > 0:39:57Over-stopping the car.
0:39:57 > 0:39:59Second through Chicago.
0:39:59 > 0:40:02I love the way you put the wipers on to make us think it's raining...
0:40:02 > 0:40:03- LAUGHTER - ..when it wasn't raining.
0:40:03 > 0:40:05That was good gamesmanship, I like that.
0:40:05 > 0:40:08Now, flat-out down the back straight,
0:40:08 > 0:40:11braking between 150, probably closer to the 50.
0:40:11 > 0:40:13Triggering those hazard warning lights.
0:40:13 > 0:40:15This line looks good to me.
0:40:15 > 0:40:16Did you let the car roll out?
0:40:16 > 0:40:18You didn't open the steering as much as I thought.
0:40:18 > 0:40:19Too much oversteer.
0:40:19 > 0:40:21- You found grip on the inside, didn't you?- Yeah.
0:40:21 > 0:40:23So you'd been thinking there, that was clever.
0:40:23 > 0:40:24Down the back straight.
0:40:24 > 0:40:26There's a cameraman, try not to hit him.
0:40:26 > 0:40:27Good idea(!)
0:40:27 > 0:40:28So now, this turn point...
0:40:30 > 0:40:31- AUDIENCE OOHS - That is rapid.
0:40:32 > 0:40:34Woo-hoo-hoo!
0:40:34 > 0:40:35Now, back through the tyre wall.
0:40:35 > 0:40:38You're not lacking in the, um...trouser department there.
0:40:38 > 0:40:40OK, last two corners.
0:40:40 > 0:40:42Be brave!
0:40:43 > 0:40:45That's mega. You're triggering those lights,
0:40:45 > 0:40:47which shows maximum braking.
0:40:49 > 0:40:51But now, over the line and a bit of grass...
0:40:51 > 0:40:53And a yump.
0:40:53 > 0:40:55- Oh...! - APPLAUSE
0:40:58 > 0:41:02- That...was...dead impressive. - Thank you.
0:41:02 > 0:41:04Oh, thanks, mate.
0:41:04 > 0:41:06That looked quick.
0:41:06 > 0:41:08That's the most committed I've seen around here.
0:41:08 > 0:41:10Absolutely, by far, yeah.
0:41:10 > 0:41:12And the conditions weren't perfect.
0:41:12 > 0:41:17- They were drier than your windscreen wiper action suggested.- Come on!
0:41:17 > 0:41:19I suppose, looking at it there, I'm wondering...
0:41:19 > 0:41:21Where could you have gone quicker?
0:41:21 > 0:41:23It looked like you were maxed out everywhere.
0:41:23 > 0:41:25I was pushing it, but I made mistakes on,
0:41:25 > 0:41:26I think, the first left-hander.
0:41:26 > 0:41:28- Could have been a bit tighter there. - Yeah.
0:41:28 > 0:41:30And I could have used more width of the track
0:41:30 > 0:41:32going to that right-hander, the follow-through.
0:41:32 > 0:41:34- Yeah.- Possibly. But if you go too far,
0:41:34 > 0:41:36you touch the painted kerb and you see what happened.
0:41:36 > 0:41:37- Yes.- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
0:41:37 > 0:41:39I think it's a really, really impressive effort.
0:41:39 > 0:41:41Hopes are high.
0:41:41 > 0:41:43- This is a big moment, I'm excited. - Me too.
0:41:43 > 0:41:45Top of our leaderboard is still Max Whitlock,
0:41:45 > 0:41:49the super gymnast, with the 1:39.5.
0:41:49 > 0:41:51His double lay-in, half-in, half-out,
0:41:51 > 0:41:55has this almost...mournful quality to it, it's just...
0:41:55 > 0:41:57LAUGHTER
0:41:57 > 0:41:59Anyway, that's besides the point.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02He has two gold medals.
0:42:02 > 0:42:05You have six gold medals.
0:42:05 > 0:42:06So, on paper,
0:42:06 > 0:42:09you should be three times faster than him.
0:42:09 > 0:42:11LAUGHTER Is that correct?
0:42:11 > 0:42:13- I'm twice his weight, though. - That doesn't matter.
0:42:13 > 0:42:16- All right. Are we ready? - Let's do it.
0:42:18 > 0:42:21Sir Chris Hoy, you did it...
0:42:26 > 0:42:27That's my favourite part.
0:42:29 > 0:42:31- ..in one minute... - Yes...
0:42:31 > 0:42:33- 30... - Yes...
0:42:33 > 0:42:36- ..5.4.- Oh!- No!
0:42:36 > 0:42:38- Really? Wow, thank you! - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:42:38 > 0:42:42Thank you, man. Thank you very much, cheers.
0:42:42 > 0:42:45- That is mega.- Thanks, man. Cheers.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48Thank you. Thank you, mate.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50Mate, you were amazing, really good.
0:42:50 > 0:42:54Right to the top, man. That is good! Way to go.
0:42:54 > 0:42:56I didn't think that at all.
0:42:56 > 0:42:59Ladies and gentlemen, Sir Chris Hoy.
0:42:59 > 0:43:01CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:43:03 > 0:43:06- That will not be beaten for some time.- No.
0:43:06 > 0:43:08That will not be beaten for some time.
0:43:08 > 0:43:11That was driving the wheels off it, as they say.
0:43:11 > 0:43:14OK, now it's time to head back to King of the Hammers.
0:43:14 > 0:43:16Earlier, we saw Sabine and Chris
0:43:16 > 0:43:19training for their big off-road showdown,
0:43:19 > 0:43:24aided by my words of encouragement and Eddie's deep tissue massage.
0:43:24 > 0:43:26But things were about to get serious.
0:43:26 > 0:43:28Really serious.
0:43:41 > 0:43:43Race Day at King of the Hammers.
0:43:43 > 0:43:47Sabine and Chris would soon be competing in an off-road race
0:43:47 > 0:43:48to claim the coveted title
0:43:48 > 0:43:51of Top Gear's Fastest Driver Apart From The Stig.
0:43:53 > 0:43:58But after some overenthusiastic practice the day before...
0:43:58 > 0:43:59Left, left!
0:43:59 > 0:44:01- Come on. - CLANKING
0:44:01 > 0:44:03- I don't think it liked that. - CLANKING
0:44:04 > 0:44:05..Team Jordan had issues.
0:44:07 > 0:44:09- What have you done here? - What have I done?
0:44:09 > 0:44:11The vehicle has let itself down.
0:44:11 > 0:44:13Are you joking me?
0:44:13 > 0:44:16This was brand-new, running perfectly.
0:44:16 > 0:44:19You don't turn left when I tell you to turn left,
0:44:19 > 0:44:21you break the machine.
0:44:21 > 0:44:23You're a car wrecker.
0:44:23 > 0:44:25How did anyone ever drive for you?
0:44:25 > 0:44:28Very easy - they didn't do silly things like this.
0:44:28 > 0:44:30Years ago, I would have said to the driver,
0:44:30 > 0:44:32"You are a complete dick."
0:44:34 > 0:44:36I'm supposed to have a positive mental vibe from you,
0:44:36 > 0:44:37you're beating me up.
0:44:37 > 0:44:40Course I'm beating you up, because I don't want the same again.
0:44:40 > 0:44:44I need you to believe. Find that commitment...
0:44:44 > 0:44:47I like Eddie. He's so cool.
0:44:47 > 0:44:48You're going to win.
0:44:48 > 0:44:51Just feel the vibes. Feel the good vibes inside you.
0:44:53 > 0:44:55Don't talk to me. Don't talk to me.
0:44:55 > 0:44:56I am not talking to him.
0:44:57 > 0:45:00- He's not a nice man... - You look concerned.
0:45:00 > 0:45:01You look a little concerned.
0:45:01 > 0:45:04At the moment, I don't have a vehicle to go in the race, do I?
0:45:04 > 0:45:06Yes, we have this. Look. It's magic.
0:45:06 > 0:45:08This is the car. Look at this.
0:45:08 > 0:45:10Ooh, it's got a Texas flag on it.
0:45:12 > 0:45:14Get out of here.
0:45:14 > 0:45:16I love it when you act like you don't like me, it's great.
0:45:16 > 0:45:18- I hate you.- You don't hate me...
0:45:18 > 0:45:22- I like Sabine.- I am not a proper lady.- You are a scumbag.
0:45:22 > 0:45:24- A scumbag?- You're trying to damage my man's head.
0:45:24 > 0:45:26- Scumbag! Hold on. - It's damaged already.
0:45:26 > 0:45:28- You're a scumbag.- Scumbag?
0:45:31 > 0:45:34'Old people are funny.
0:45:34 > 0:45:37'But with the atmosphere heavy with prerace tension,
0:45:37 > 0:45:40'it was soon time for our drivers to make their way to the track -
0:45:40 > 0:45:42'if you could call it that.'
0:45:43 > 0:45:46The race would start on the choppy desert floor
0:45:46 > 0:45:49with Eddie and I keeping watch from a high vantage point.
0:45:49 > 0:45:51Here, our drivers would battle the dust
0:45:51 > 0:45:54to reach the unforgiving rock face beyond.
0:45:55 > 0:45:59After a brutal uphill scramble, a perilous ledge,
0:45:59 > 0:46:01ending in a do-or-die descent
0:46:01 > 0:46:04and a chance to get the hammer down back on the flats.
0:46:05 > 0:46:08Negotiating another short boulder pass,
0:46:08 > 0:46:12a fast sequence of banked turns and flat-out jumps
0:46:12 > 0:46:14completes the lap.
0:46:14 > 0:46:17And they'll be doing all of that eight times.
0:46:19 > 0:46:21So before the race was due to begin,
0:46:21 > 0:46:25we headed out with our drivers to offer some encouragement
0:46:25 > 0:46:28at the toughest stage of all, the Rock Wall...
0:46:30 > 0:46:32..towering over 200 feet above us.
0:46:35 > 0:46:37Oh, my Jesus...
0:46:38 > 0:46:40- I mean, what the- BLEEP? EDDIE CHUCKLES
0:46:43 > 0:46:47So the part that's tricky here is if you're right behind someone,
0:46:47 > 0:46:49you've just got to single-file up it.
0:46:49 > 0:46:53- I guess you could maybe try that side on the right...- Oh, God.
0:46:53 > 0:46:56..to pass someone, but what do you do when you get to this?
0:46:56 > 0:46:59You've just got to check up and go single file, right?
0:46:59 > 0:47:02Yeah. So just do it.
0:47:02 > 0:47:05Unlike the previous day's boulder crawl,
0:47:05 > 0:47:07during the race, these loose rock scrambles
0:47:07 > 0:47:10would have to be attacked at speed.
0:47:10 > 0:47:11Whoa...whoa...
0:47:11 > 0:47:13And on near-vertical faces,
0:47:13 > 0:47:16rolling the car was a very real danger.
0:47:19 > 0:47:22But at least Sabine was in full control.
0:47:22 > 0:47:23SHE SCREAMS
0:47:23 > 0:47:26The steering wheel came off.
0:47:26 > 0:47:27- BLEEP- hell!
0:47:30 > 0:47:31- BLEEP- hell!
0:47:31 > 0:47:33Oh, man.
0:47:35 > 0:47:37- BLEEP- hell!
0:47:37 > 0:47:40I don't want to have the steering wheel come off.
0:47:40 > 0:47:42What have we got ourselves into, here?
0:47:55 > 0:47:57Top man.
0:47:57 > 0:47:59Nice and easy. You're OK.
0:47:59 > 0:48:02'Having reached the top of the rock wall, though,
0:48:02 > 0:48:05'there was still the small matter of getting back down...'
0:48:06 > 0:48:07This is mental.
0:48:09 > 0:48:10- Oh! - CLANKING
0:48:10 > 0:48:13THUDDING Oh!
0:48:13 > 0:48:15'..quickly learning that this was a race about bravery
0:48:15 > 0:48:16'as much as speed.'
0:48:16 > 0:48:17Can we go back now?
0:48:17 > 0:48:19CHRIS LAUGHS
0:48:20 > 0:48:23We decided we had offered our drivers enough encouragement
0:48:23 > 0:48:25and headed back to the pits.
0:48:25 > 0:48:28I'm glad I'm not in the car with you for the race.
0:48:28 > 0:48:31Oh...this is crazy.
0:48:33 > 0:48:36'And after some final tweaks to the cars,
0:48:36 > 0:48:38'we said our last goodbyes to Sabine and Chris.
0:48:38 > 0:48:41'Well, not our last goodbyes, but... You know what I mean.'
0:48:44 > 0:48:47It was time for them to take their places
0:48:47 > 0:48:49out of the way at the back of the grid.
0:48:49 > 0:48:51Because in this Legends Class race,
0:48:51 > 0:48:56they were pitted against some of the best talent in Hammer history -
0:48:56 > 0:48:58all hardened veterans in an event
0:48:58 > 0:49:01where simply finishing is an achievement.
0:49:01 > 0:49:03From the sport's fastest female,
0:49:03 > 0:49:05to mavericks
0:49:05 > 0:49:07and seasoned warriors.
0:49:07 > 0:49:11So really, this was a race within a race.
0:49:11 > 0:49:14Schmitz versus Harris.
0:49:15 > 0:49:16Oof!
0:49:16 > 0:49:17Serious business.
0:49:22 > 0:49:25- It's crazy. - You can't believe this, can you?
0:49:25 > 0:49:26OK, we're getting close.
0:49:26 > 0:49:29You stay focused and you stay out of the roost, OK?
0:49:29 > 0:49:31Strategy.
0:49:31 > 0:49:34Usual thing, just jump the start, if you can.
0:49:34 > 0:49:38Make sure you put the guy beside you into the wall.
0:49:38 > 0:49:40The rest follows on from there.
0:49:40 > 0:49:42OK, Harris.
0:49:42 > 0:49:44I am on a mission and I just want to beat you.
0:49:44 > 0:49:47All I can ever think about on the grid
0:49:47 > 0:49:50is the fact that I wish I'd had another wee.
0:49:52 > 0:49:54The desert would wait no longer.
0:49:54 > 0:49:57Eight laps of off-road endurance.
0:49:59 > 0:50:01Let the battle commence.
0:50:01 > 0:50:05- ANNOUNCER:- Three, two, one...go!
0:50:07 > 0:50:10Damn it!
0:50:10 > 0:50:11Oh, what a start.
0:50:13 > 0:50:15- So much- BLEEP- in my face.
0:50:18 > 0:50:21Good one, my man. Go on, Chris.
0:50:23 > 0:50:25I don't see anything.
0:50:25 > 0:50:26You're OK, Sabine.
0:50:26 > 0:50:28Keep going, keep going. I know the dust is bad.
0:50:28 > 0:50:32Just think about it as the Nurburgring in the Stone Ages.
0:50:32 > 0:50:33SHE LAUGHS
0:50:34 > 0:50:38'Despite the dust, we were both off to a promising start,
0:50:38 > 0:50:41'but that Rock Wall was looming.'
0:50:41 > 0:50:42Oh, God.
0:50:45 > 0:50:48Rocks being thrown in my face.
0:50:48 > 0:50:50I can't see where I'm going.
0:50:50 > 0:50:52This is horrendous.
0:50:52 > 0:50:56'But, somehow, we weren't just in a two-car race at the back.'
0:50:56 > 0:50:57There's Chris in fourth place.
0:50:57 > 0:51:00Go on, Chris. Go on, my son!
0:51:00 > 0:51:03'No, we were right in the mix.'
0:51:03 > 0:51:04Whoo!
0:51:04 > 0:51:06- CRASH! - Oh! I hit them.
0:51:06 > 0:51:08- Where's Sabine?- Woo-hoo-hoo!
0:51:10 > 0:51:11Oh, look at that!
0:51:15 > 0:51:16Come on, Chris.
0:51:18 > 0:51:21At the top of the wall, they were up with the pros,
0:51:21 > 0:51:24which should have given them some real confidence.
0:51:24 > 0:51:26Oh, my God, what am I doing this for?
0:51:28 > 0:51:29This is crazy.
0:51:31 > 0:51:33Oh, my God - just let it go, let it go, man.
0:51:33 > 0:51:35Let it go!
0:51:37 > 0:51:39'Back down on the desert floor...
0:51:40 > 0:51:41'..Sabine was on my tail.
0:51:43 > 0:51:46'And as we tore through the rest of the course...'
0:51:46 > 0:51:47Whoo...
0:51:47 > 0:51:49hoo!
0:51:49 > 0:51:52'..we saw what Hammer racing was really all about.'
0:51:53 > 0:51:55Come on!
0:51:55 > 0:51:58'Off-road open warfare.'
0:51:59 > 0:52:01Let's see where my man is.
0:52:01 > 0:52:02- He's in third.- Third?!
0:52:02 > 0:52:03Go on, Chris.
0:52:03 > 0:52:05'Survival of the fittest.'
0:52:05 > 0:52:07Oh, my heavens. That was close.
0:52:15 > 0:52:17'But as the laps piled on...'
0:52:17 > 0:52:20Come on, Sabine. Push, push, push!
0:52:20 > 0:52:23'..they weren't just battling the other racers.'
0:52:23 > 0:52:25No, you're not coming past me, you American...!
0:52:27 > 0:52:29These rocks are really crazy.
0:52:29 > 0:52:30I need to turn right.
0:52:30 > 0:52:32'The course was fighting back, too.'
0:52:32 > 0:52:34- Uh-oh.- Hang on a second. - She's stuck.
0:52:37 > 0:52:40Reverse, just a little bit. Not much, maybe five feet.
0:52:40 > 0:52:44'Snared by the rocks on the worst part of the course,
0:52:44 > 0:52:47'Sabine was losing precious time...'
0:52:47 > 0:52:49Turn the wheels all the way to the right and go forward.
0:52:52 > 0:52:55'..and the rest of the pack were getting away.'
0:53:04 > 0:53:07All right, try to go slow, backwards.
0:53:07 > 0:53:08Straight back, slow.
0:53:08 > 0:53:11Back little a bit more, a little bit more.
0:53:11 > 0:53:13You might have to come off that ledge.
0:53:13 > 0:53:17'One wrong instruction from me and she could roll.'
0:53:17 > 0:53:18All right, stop right there.
0:53:18 > 0:53:22Turn the wheels the other way and go forward. To the right.
0:53:28 > 0:53:30There you go.
0:53:32 > 0:53:34Atta girl. Yeah! Good girl.
0:53:37 > 0:53:39You're a star, you're a star. All right.
0:53:39 > 0:53:41That's OK.
0:53:41 > 0:53:42"That's OK"?
0:53:43 > 0:53:45Oh, she lost a lot of time there.
0:53:45 > 0:53:48'Back up and running, to hunt down Chris,
0:53:48 > 0:53:51'Sabine would need wring out all 500 horsepower
0:53:51 > 0:53:53'from her 6.4-litre V8.'
0:53:53 > 0:53:55Keep your pace, keep your pace.
0:53:55 > 0:53:56Holy crow...
0:53:58 > 0:54:00- THUDDING - Oh,- BLEEP!
0:54:07 > 0:54:09As she tried to reel him back in,
0:54:09 > 0:54:13Chris, already on his second car of the event,
0:54:13 > 0:54:14was now in trouble again.
0:54:16 > 0:54:18I've got a gearbox issue, I think.
0:54:20 > 0:54:22I can't get into second.
0:54:24 > 0:54:28Never mind the second gear, you're doing brilliant, keep going.
0:54:29 > 0:54:32I've got a transmission issue, now.
0:54:32 > 0:54:34'Despite Eddie's encouragement,
0:54:34 > 0:54:37'losing gears at this stage was a serious issue.'
0:54:37 > 0:54:40Beautiful, beautiful. Power, power, power, power.
0:54:40 > 0:54:42'And, entering the final stages of the race,
0:54:42 > 0:54:46'Sabine was pushing hard to hunt down Chris.'
0:54:46 > 0:54:48Come on, Chris, keep that power going.
0:54:48 > 0:54:51This is so strong, just make sure you look after the car.
0:54:51 > 0:54:54'But with Chris's car still just about holding together,
0:54:54 > 0:54:58'Hammer racing claimed another victim.'
0:54:58 > 0:55:01- Oh, no.- The car's smoking, we've got smoke coming out of the back.
0:55:01 > 0:55:03- The car's on fire. - Holy- BLEEP!
0:55:05 > 0:55:10That looked like some bad smoke coming out of Sabine's car.
0:55:10 > 0:55:14'So near the finish, Sabine was determined to keep going.
0:55:14 > 0:55:16'But with the smoke only getting worse,
0:55:16 > 0:55:19'as team manager, I had no choice.'
0:55:19 > 0:55:21All right, Sabine, pull off, pull off.
0:55:21 > 0:55:22Pull off to the left.
0:55:22 > 0:55:24Stop, stop, stop!
