0:01:24 > 0:01:26I'd have sent him straight out that gate.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29Each of them desperate to convince the experts
0:01:29 > 0:01:31they're worthy of the title.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48I am gagging for the first place.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51With the pressure and time limit, you make mistakes.
0:01:51 > 0:01:55But who will sink and who will swim?

0:02:22 > 0:02:24because this is Young Carpenter Of The Year.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Hundreds applied, but only the best made it through
0:02:31 > 0:02:33to a gruelling test and rigorous interview,

0:02:36 > 0:02:40- Wood is my passion. - I do think I could be Young Carpenter Of The Year.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44It's a bit of a geeky thing to admit. Especially for a girl.
0:02:44 > 0:02:45The top 20 had to face the judges
0:02:45 > 0:02:48as their carpentry skills were put to the test
0:02:48 > 0:02:50in a nerve-wracking practical challenge.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53Absolutely buzzing. Let's see what's next.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55I've got my fighting spirit.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58With only four places in the final, the competition was fierce
0:02:58 > 0:03:00and the splinters were flying.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05But, finally, four were chosen.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09I eat, sleep, breathe carpentry and joinery.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11I'm totally ecstatic, over t'moon.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14I was winning national competitions against 25-year-olds when I was 19.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05I've had quite a lot of experience,

0:04:19 > 0:04:21I've set up my own business
0:04:21 > 0:04:23and this would really be the icing on the cake for me.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29Last, but by no means least, is our fourth finalist.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09An expert in listed-building renovation
0:05:09 > 0:05:11and modern interior design.
0:05:11 > 0:05:16Jai Godwin is the ultimate go-to man in carpentry.
0:05:16 > 0:05:18I love the smell of wood,
0:05:18 > 0:05:20I love the feel of wood.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22I guess it's just ingrained in me.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25I don't like a bad attitude.
0:05:25 > 0:05:28I like somebody who can, kind of, take the criticism,
0:05:28 > 0:05:30move on, learn from it and adapt and listen to what I say,
0:05:30 > 0:05:32cos I know what I'm talking about.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34What he doesn't know about carpentry,
0:05:34 > 0:05:36you could write on the head of a nail.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38Meet Phill Williams.
0:05:38 > 0:05:42Phill's the international man of carpentry,
0:05:42 > 0:05:45learning his trade whilst travelling the world.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47His passion for restoring listed properties
0:05:47 > 0:05:49and his love of all things wood
0:05:49 > 0:05:52means he likes to keep it traditional.
0:05:52 > 0:05:54Carpentry to me isn't about earning big bucks.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57Sitting at a workshop here, I've got the river.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59You can be repairing a boat one day
0:05:59 > 0:06:03and tomorrow, I might be fitting a worktop somewhere else.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06You don't have to go to university to be Young Carpenter Of The Year,
0:06:06 > 0:06:08that's what makes it special.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11If you have a passion for the material
0:06:11 > 0:06:13and an understanding of the tools
0:06:13 > 0:06:16and you've got that skill set, that's all you'll need.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19Phil, what are you going to be looking for in this competition?
0:06:19 > 0:06:22I think, to be the best, you have to be able to innovate.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25- I want to see people that love wood, that want to be able to use it.- OK.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27Jai, what are you going to look for
0:06:27 > 0:06:30in arguably the four best young carpenters in the country?
0:06:30 > 0:06:33To cut it, you've got to be single-minded, but, above all,
0:06:33 > 0:06:37hardworking, so some serious hard graft's what I want to see.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40All right. It's almost time to get things started.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44Our judges have devised four very tough carpentry challenges.
0:06:44 > 0:06:48What you're about to experience will be more gruelling
0:06:48 > 0:06:52than the trickiest of customers you've ever had to deal with.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58So, this is the warm up before the big game.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01We're going to test all of those essential skills
0:07:01 > 0:07:02that you need to be a carpenter.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06And all they really need to do here, is measure twice, cut once,
0:07:06 > 0:07:08but keep one eye on the clock.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11OK, gentlemen, we know you've probably fitted
0:07:11 > 0:07:14more skirting boards than I've had hot dates,
0:07:14 > 0:07:16but for your first challenge,
0:07:16 > 0:07:19we want to see who's the sharpest tool in the box,
0:07:19 > 0:07:23able to negotiate our intricate maze of skirting.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26And with just 45 minutes to complete the task,
0:07:26 > 0:07:29this will be carpentry under pressure.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32It's time to set the benchmark.
0:07:32 > 0:07:33Let's get going.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41It's the crucial first challenge to find Young Carpenter Of The Year,
0:07:41 > 0:07:45and for our four opponents, it's a race to their tool bags.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49As the battle begins to see who will be crowned king of the carpenters.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55Our judges have conceived an intricate maze
0:07:55 > 0:07:59that will test our finalists' precision in basic carpentry.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03So, they have to measure, cut and fit eight joints,
0:08:03 > 0:08:06fixing the pieces of skirting to the maze,
0:08:06 > 0:08:09which has various levels of difficulty.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12From a standard, outside, 90 degree angle
0:08:12 > 0:08:15to the toughest, inside, 135 degree angle.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18They only have enough wood to complete the maze,
0:08:18 > 0:08:20so any mistakes and they've blown it.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26With power tools banned and a strict time limit,
0:08:26 > 0:08:28this is a chance for the judges to see
0:08:28 > 0:08:30how they perform under intense pressure.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33Judges, why skirting?
0:08:33 > 0:08:38It looks quite simple, but it tests every single skill of a carpenter,
0:08:38 > 0:08:41and that's your cutting and that's your measuring,
0:08:41 > 0:08:45and if these guys can't do that at this stage, they've got no chance.
0:08:45 > 0:08:49But perfectionist Tibby hasn't even touched the skirting.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51Instead, he kicks off by constructing
0:08:51 > 0:08:53a wooden template with guide slots
0:08:53 > 0:08:56that he hopes will create precise joints every time.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01You're the only one who's made a mitre box, Tibby.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03Aye, well... Preparation, isn't it?
0:09:03 > 0:09:06Do you think your mitre block's going to help you in the time?
0:09:06 > 0:09:09Yeah, I think it'll, hopefully, help me, yeah.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12But could this meticulous approach cost him?
0:09:12 > 0:09:16Cutting these angles, we should be able to do them freehand.
0:09:16 > 0:09:20I admire him for doing it, but I just worry
0:09:20 > 0:09:23that Tibby doing that is eating too much into his time.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27The other three carpenters have measured and cut
0:09:27 > 0:09:32their skirting and begin to attach sections to their maze.
0:09:32 > 0:09:37But the judges have spotted that Tom, the youngest competitor,
0:09:37 > 0:09:39is already cutting corners.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41What's the craic with Tom, guys?
0:09:41 > 0:09:45The first length of skirting, he had it sprawled out across the bench.
0:09:45 > 0:09:46He was, kind of, leaning on it.
0:09:46 > 0:09:49He didn't choose to clamp it or anything. We're just concerned,
0:09:49 > 0:09:52you know, is he going to get a precise cut?
0:09:52 > 0:09:55I think he's feeling the pressure a little bit.
0:10:01 > 0:10:03- How are we doing, Karl?- Not too bad.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06- You've got more on than anybody else, I think. - You're going for it, Karl.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09How do you think your angles are coming up, there?
0:10:09 > 0:10:14Uh, not great after being used to modern-day power tools, but...
0:10:14 > 0:10:17What if you're working somewhere where you can't get power, then?
0:10:17 > 0:10:20We're in the middle of the countryside, there's no power.
0:10:20 > 0:10:22- Then I'd have to do it this way, wouldn't I?- Yeah.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24Or hire a generator.
0:10:28 > 0:10:33Cheeky, chippy Karl certainly knows how to handle his wood.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37If anybody's better than me then I'd like to see what they're doing.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41Carpentry is his life. He absolutely loves it.
0:10:41 > 0:10:45But grafter Karl hasn't always had it his own way.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47When I got made redundant
0:10:47 > 0:10:52it was pretty much the worst feeling in the world.
0:10:52 > 0:10:54Not one to stay down for long,
0:10:54 > 0:10:58Karl set out to prove he's the best in HIS business.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00I set up my own carpentry business.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04It's a good feeling. It's probably the best thing that I've ever done.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06He's going to make a future for himself
0:11:06 > 0:11:08and, fingers crossed, that's what'll happen.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11And winning Young Carpenter Of The Year
0:11:11 > 0:11:13would mean everything to Karl.
0:11:13 > 0:11:17Deep down, I am gagging for the first place.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19I mean, that's where I want to be.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24Back in the competition, and with the clock ticking,
0:11:24 > 0:11:27the carpenters have picked up the pace.
0:11:29 > 0:11:34Karl has fixed the most skirting board on, but now seems to be taking it off.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37He seemed to get off to an absolute flyer, and I noticed he took
0:11:37 > 0:11:39a couple of pieces of skirting board off.
0:11:39 > 0:11:43I don't know if he's spotted something and he's trying to re-address the quality
0:11:43 > 0:11:45which is great, but I'm just a little bit concerned,
0:11:45 > 0:11:49cos they've only got enough skirting to do the whole lot.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51It's the critical halfway point.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54Of the seven sections of skirting to attach,
0:11:54 > 0:11:58perfectionist, Tibby, only has two pieces on his maze.
0:11:58 > 0:12:01Tom has three sections and Peter also has three sections in place.
0:12:01 > 0:12:06But they're all far from finished and the judges are worried.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13They're all struggling for time, aren't they now? Everyone.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16Yeah. I can't see any of them, at this rate, finishing.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19Our royal carpenter, Peter, is not used to deadlines.
0:12:19 > 0:12:22It seems time's not an issue for HIS boss.
0:12:22 > 0:12:26You were obviously doing a lot of really intricate work,
0:12:26 > 0:12:28so must be used to a fairly high standard of finish.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30There's never time limits at the castle,
0:12:30 > 0:12:32just take as long as you need,
0:12:32 > 0:12:34as long as it's a good job at the end of it.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36Out of hundreds of young applicants,
0:12:36 > 0:12:39Peter struck gold and landed his dream job
0:12:39 > 0:12:42at one of the most prestigious addresses in the country.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44Windsor Castle.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47He might be in sumptuous surroundings,
0:12:47 > 0:12:50but with about 1,000 rooms full of historic timber,
0:12:50 > 0:12:53he's certainly got his graft cut out.
0:12:53 > 0:12:55A heritage carpenter by royal appointment,
0:12:55 > 0:12:59Peter believes he's a cut above.
0:12:59 > 0:13:01There is more skill in heritage joinery,
0:13:01 > 0:13:04because rather than making something new to go in a square frame
0:13:04 > 0:13:07it's going to be how to twist and how to square,
0:13:07 > 0:13:09so it just seems more difficult and more interesting.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13And then it goes back in, it could be there for 300 or 400 years again
0:13:13 > 0:13:15and the Queen could be using it every day
0:13:15 > 0:13:18when she's walking her corgis.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Peter's lucky, there's only a few carpenters working in private residences
0:13:21 > 0:13:23of members of the royal family,
0:13:23 > 0:13:26so, yeah, he is, pretty much, one of the chosen few.
0:13:26 > 0:13:28And our right, royal chippy
0:13:28 > 0:13:31wants to be the jewel in the crown of carpenters.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33It would mean a lot for me to win.
0:13:33 > 0:13:38I'm going to go into the competition and give it 110%
0:13:38 > 0:13:42- Are you happy with your work so far? - Uh, it's not too bad. It could be better.- What could be better?
0:13:42 > 0:13:47There's a few gaps there, that's not going back to the wall, but... Painter can fill it.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49- PETER LAUGHS - Can he? Costs money, though.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53It's not a job for one's servants, Peter.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57Pete concerns me. His attitude was one of, you know,
0:13:57 > 0:14:00"It's OK, the decorators'll get over it."
0:14:00 > 0:14:03And, you know, this guy works at Windsor Castle.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06You can't pass it on to traders down the line.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09You've got to do your work good enough, get it done.
0:14:09 > 0:14:13With minutes to go, the carpenters knock their skirting into shape.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16They're all battling to finish in the time allowed,
0:14:16 > 0:14:18and Tibby is seriously focused.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23- Are you happy with your joints? - Yeah. I mean, with the time limit,
0:14:23 > 0:14:26I think it couldn't be any better, really.
0:14:27 > 0:14:31Exhausted, they make a final push to the finish line.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34Start thinking about finishing up!
0:14:38 > 0:14:40Gentlemen, five...
0:14:40 > 0:14:41four...
0:14:41 > 0:14:43three...
0:14:43 > 0:14:44two...
0:14:44 > 0:14:47one, and tools down, please.
0:14:47 > 0:14:51Your time's up, step away from your skirting boards.
0:14:54 > 0:14:58Our young carpenters were floored by the challenge
0:14:58 > 0:15:00and none of them completed their maze.
0:15:00 > 0:15:04Now it's down to judges Phill and Jai,
0:15:04 > 0:15:06too men who never skirt round the issues.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10- Tibby.- All right?- Not seeing that much down there. Are you happy?
0:15:10 > 0:15:13Well... I mean, I could have done more, but, obviously,
0:15:13 > 0:15:17I took a bit of time producing my mitre box. Um...
0:15:17 > 0:15:21With hindsight, do you think maybe you should have done those by eye a little bit more, then?
0:15:21 > 0:15:25Maybe I could have done, but I just wanted them to be perfect.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28The judges were impressed with Tibby's perfectionist nature,
0:15:28 > 0:15:32but does quality win over quantity in their minds?
0:15:32 > 0:15:35I tried jumping on to that side, which isn't easy to do.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38What was the thinking behind that, Tibby?
0:15:38 > 0:15:40I wanted to impress you. Obviously, these are easy.
0:15:40 > 0:15:4390 degree mitres. I thought I might as well take a risk.
0:15:43 > 0:15:47- Gave it my best shot, and, uh, hopefully it's good enough. - All right, Tibby.
0:15:48 > 0:15:51I concentrated too much on the quality than the quantity,
0:15:51 > 0:15:54but I think the quality of my work were quite good,
0:15:54 > 0:15:57probably better than some of the other lads that did more than me.
0:15:58 > 0:16:00- How're we doing, Karl?- All right.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04Well, that's a big old gap in the middle there, mate!
0:16:04 > 0:16:06I mean, I don't have any formal qualifications
0:16:06 > 0:16:08but that's probably not right, is it?
0:16:08 > 0:16:11- Definitely not right. - Karl started with all guns blazing,
0:16:11 > 0:16:14but hit a stumbling block halfway through the challenge,
0:16:14 > 0:16:18and his rushed approach has led to shoddy workmanship.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21You seemed to get off to a real flying start, Karl,
0:16:21 > 0:16:24and then I noticed, did you take something off and start again
0:16:24 > 0:16:26because you wasn't happy, or...?
0:16:26 > 0:16:29Um... I just, kind of...
0:16:29 > 0:16:31I started with this piece.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34It was about a mil too long, so I shaved a little bit off there
0:16:34 > 0:16:37because it was just bringing this piece slightly proud.
0:16:37 > 0:16:39Big mistake, really, so...
0:16:39 > 0:16:44Your mission statement, Karl, is that you consistently deliver.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47- Do you think you've done that here? - No, in all honesty.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50Just on that piece there, I don't think I've hit it on the money.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53- But that aside, you're happy with everything else?- Yeah.- OK.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58It does feel like a bit of a personal attack.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00That's probably because I enjoy what I do so much
0:17:00 > 0:17:04that it is my passion, and to hear something like that, it does...
0:17:04 > 0:17:05It does, kind of, get to you.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08Although not used to working against the clock at the castle,
0:17:08 > 0:17:13our royal carpenter, Peter, has actually got the most skirting on.
0:17:13 > 0:17:15- Are you happy?- Er, it could have been better.- Yeah?
0:17:15 > 0:17:18- I could have finished it. - Of course you didn't finish it.
0:17:18 > 0:17:22- Well, you're not used to time constraints, are you?- No.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24- What do you think of your hammering? - Well, yeah.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26A couple of times there was half moon marks on it.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30We already established, though, the decorator was going to get that.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33- I was joking when I said that, but, yeah...- OK. OK.
0:17:33 > 0:17:35I don't think, even if I did it again
0:17:35 > 0:17:38with a different mindset, I'd get it all finished.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40I think the time restraint was just too tight.
0:17:40 > 0:17:42Our teen carpenter, Tom,
0:17:42 > 0:17:44never really recovered from his wobbly start
0:17:44 > 0:17:47and of the four, has achieved the least.
0:17:47 > 0:17:51I mean, in the heats, Tom, your work was some of the best work.
0:17:51 > 0:17:56But here, you know, we've got some gaps on all of those joints.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58I found it very challenging under pressure, so...
0:17:58 > 0:18:01I feel I could have done better, really.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06- Would the client be happy with those?- No, I wouldn't say so.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08- Even this one, look.- No. - Sticking out a bit.
0:18:08 > 0:18:13Really, I know I can do a lot better, but it's just being under pressure and everything
0:18:13 > 0:18:15and then nothing really worked out.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21Jai, what's going on? They couldn't finish it.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25I know. I'm really, really disappointed. I'm shocked, actually.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28I was expecting at least one of them to get round and complete it.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31Absolutely. Well, let's run through them. Tibby.
0:18:31 > 0:18:35The mitre block, what it showed to me was attitude. He wanted to make the perfect job.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38And really, out of all the contestants,
0:18:38 > 0:18:40it's his passion that's really shone through.
0:18:40 > 0:18:46Tom. What happened to Tom? He just lost it, he just melted. Fell apart.
0:18:46 > 0:18:50He's still learning, it's an intimidating environment. We've said it throughout this challenge,
0:18:50 > 0:18:56it's basic, module one carpentry. Nothing was glued, he didn't even attempt to fix anything.
0:18:56 > 0:18:59He had that moment where he had the wood wobbling about,
0:18:59 > 0:19:03wobbling all over, wanding his wood around the workshop, didn't he? It was all floppy.
0:19:03 > 0:19:06Karl, I had high hopes with Karl coming in here,
0:19:06 > 0:19:08but again, with a bit of pressure, maybe...
0:19:08 > 0:19:12He was like a bull in a china shop, you know? He's a strapping lad,
0:19:12 > 0:19:15he's got the gusto, he's got the force,
0:19:15 > 0:19:17but I think that showed in some of his work.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19The first thing you do is you plan it out in your head.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22You make a mental note of what it is that you've got to do.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24And I didn't see any of them do that,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26especially Karl, unfortunately.
0:19:26 > 0:19:29I wouldn't want a price off any of these to put skirting round my room.
0:19:29 > 0:19:34- Peter.- He did, out of all four, put the most wood on to that template.
0:19:34 > 0:19:38When he started, he got off to a really slow start,
0:19:38 > 0:19:40and he made that point about, "You can take your time,"
0:19:40 > 0:19:43which is all right if you're working for the Queen,
0:19:43 > 0:19:45but working for the public, you can't do that.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47When he said about, again,
0:19:47 > 0:19:49just letting a decorator come in after him and finish.
0:19:49 > 0:19:52Now, he said he was joking, but it's an attitude thing.
0:19:52 > 0:19:57There's one thing I cannot stand and that's tradesmen passing it off on to the following tradesman.
0:20:00 > 0:20:05Carpenters. Time to find out what our experts think.
0:20:05 > 0:20:08Let's start off with Tibby, please, gentlemen.
0:20:08 > 0:20:11Tibby. I loved the fact that you wanted to tackle the difficult part
0:20:11 > 0:20:14of the challenge and jump to those difficult cuts.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16Disappointed you didn't finish,
0:20:16 > 0:20:19and that goes for the other finalists as well,
0:20:19 > 0:20:22so maybe in the next round it's just to have a bit more of a plan.
0:20:22 > 0:20:24Tom. Youngest person here.
0:20:24 > 0:20:27You're still, really, at the start of you career.
0:20:27 > 0:20:30You knew today, some of your joints weren't quite there.
0:20:30 > 0:20:33Just start to think ahead a little bit more,
0:20:33 > 0:20:35understand what you've got to do.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38You proved that you're a great carpenter. That's why you're here,
0:20:38 > 0:20:41- you just need to show us that.- Karl,
0:20:41 > 0:20:44a little bit more attention to detail, you know? Have a plan.
0:20:44 > 0:20:48You know how much time we're getting allotted for these challenges.
0:20:48 > 0:20:51Try and break that down into minutes and divide up your time,
0:20:51 > 0:20:52what you need to get done.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55Peter. I just worry a little bit about your attitude.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57You made a couple of remarks, there.
0:20:57 > 0:21:01Again, for the next round, focus, start thinking about you,
0:21:01 > 0:21:04as a carpenter, out in the real world
0:21:04 > 0:21:07and just take it that one little step further.
0:21:07 > 0:21:12Judges, if you did have to send somebody home now, who would it be?
0:21:12 > 0:21:15I think after this round it would be...
0:21:15 > 0:21:16Tom.
0:21:16 > 0:21:19- How about you, Phil?- Yeah, Tom.
0:21:20 > 0:21:24All right, chaps. The good news is nobody is going home at this stage.
0:21:24 > 0:21:29You've still got another round to impress, all right?
0:21:29 > 0:21:34The bad news is, one of you will be leaving after the next challenge.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38After such a dressing down from the judges,
0:21:38 > 0:21:42our contenders friends and families are on hand to offer their support.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47The judges just, really... Cos mine weren't up...
0:21:47 > 0:21:49As good as everyone else's, then,
0:21:49 > 0:21:52if it would be a knock-out this round then I would come out.
0:21:52 > 0:21:57On your next challenge, just see what it is, plan it out,
0:21:57 > 0:22:00take it carefully and do the best you can.
0:22:00 > 0:22:05- They weren't happy with a couple of comments I made and my attitude, so...- Attitude to what?
0:22:05 > 0:22:07Attitude to the work, I imagine,
0:22:07 > 0:22:09so I'll just try and not talk as much to them next time.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12They were impressed with, like, using my initiative
0:22:12 > 0:22:15and jumping from that side to that other side,
0:22:15 > 0:22:17which I could have...
0:22:17 > 0:22:20Really, I should have started on that side first.
0:22:20 > 0:22:25It was just one silly mistake. I don't feel threatened by that, so...
0:22:25 > 0:22:27Well, I think, you know, it's pressure, isn't it?
0:22:31 > 0:22:35For this next challenge, you might think we've gone slightly quackers,
0:22:35 > 0:22:39but believe me, there is method to our madness.
0:22:39 > 0:22:42Most carpenters love to be creative, and in this challenge,
0:22:42 > 0:22:44our finalists are certainly going to get the chance
0:22:44 > 0:22:46to show us their artistic flair.
0:22:46 > 0:22:50Since the time of Noah's Ark, we've always known
0:22:50 > 0:22:54that wood can make a great floating home for our animal friends,
0:22:54 > 0:22:57and it just so happens that we've got some ducks...
0:22:57 > 0:23:01DUCKS GABBLE ..in need of a new home on the water,
0:23:01 > 0:23:04and then it's up to you to design and build
0:23:04 > 0:23:07a floating palace for our feathered friends.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10It just needs to include a pitched roof.
0:23:10 > 0:23:13Jai, what are you going to be looking for in the duck houses?
0:23:13 > 0:23:16I'd like to see the guys' personalities come through.
0:23:16 > 0:23:18It's their chance to get creative.
0:23:18 > 0:23:20- Phil?- I want to see a beautifully pitched roof.
0:23:20 > 0:23:22It's difficult to do a roof.
0:23:22 > 0:23:26Gentlemen, you each have to design a duck house that floats,
0:23:26 > 0:23:28but you do not have a lot of time.
0:23:28 > 0:23:30Just 90 minutes, to be exact.
0:23:30 > 0:23:35Your time starts now. Let's get "quacking".
0:23:37 > 0:23:40The carpenters are against the clock
0:23:40 > 0:23:43to knock up a knock-out home for their feathered friends.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48They've been given the base, but need to make sure
0:23:48 > 0:23:50the finished product stays balanced and afloat,
0:23:50 > 0:23:53so design and preparation are critical.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56Can I get a little look at that sketch
0:23:56 > 0:23:58that you've knocked up already?
0:23:58 > 0:24:00Right, you've just drawn a hexagon.
0:24:00 > 0:24:05You're taking a bit of a gamble that it's all going to come together at the top, yeah?
0:24:05 > 0:24:06- Yeah.- OK.
0:24:08 > 0:24:11They have free rein on the style of their ducks' digs,
0:24:11 > 0:24:14but their floating homes must have a pitched roof.
0:24:14 > 0:24:16That's a sloping roof to you and I.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19This will be a real test
0:24:19 > 0:24:22of a carpenter's technical ability to measure angles
0:24:22 > 0:24:26and work out mathematically how the wood comes together.
0:24:26 > 0:24:29In this all-important second challenge,
0:24:29 > 0:24:31no-one wants to be a sitting duck,
0:24:31 > 0:24:35as after this, one of them will be going home.
0:24:36 > 0:24:40And with just 90 minutes to complete the challenge,
0:24:40 > 0:24:42this really will sort out the men from the boys.
0:24:45 > 0:24:49In the last challenge, Karl's bullish approach
0:24:49 > 0:24:52didn't impress the judges, but this time, he isn't jumping in feet first.
0:24:52 > 0:24:56So, this is good prep work he's doing?
0:24:56 > 0:25:00- Yeah, yeah.- He's using his vice as well, thinking on his feet.
0:25:00 > 0:25:03He's one of the few that's not put a ring of wood around the bottom.
0:25:03 > 0:25:06On a wooden base, you don't need the ring around the bottom.
0:25:06 > 0:25:09Which is saving time.
0:25:09 > 0:25:13Peter, our carpenter to the Queen, is making his excuses.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16Or possibly looking for a royal pardon?
0:25:16 > 0:25:21I've never done a roof since college, so... It's going to be making it up as I go along, really.
0:25:21 > 0:25:23You've got to think on your feet as a carpenter.
0:25:23 > 0:25:25You've done that, you can do this.
0:25:25 > 0:25:29It'll be roof-shaped at the end, and water-tight.
0:25:29 > 0:25:32- And good enough for ducks. - Good enough for royal ducks?
0:25:32 > 0:25:34- Or swans.- Or swans, OK.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36Ooh, posh.
0:25:40 > 0:25:41Tibby's pursuit for perfection
0:25:41 > 0:25:43hindered his chances in the first task,
0:25:43 > 0:25:46so this time, he's keeping it simple.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48I've got this as a template, so...
0:25:48 > 0:25:51So, this drawing you've got here, this is your roof design, yeah?
0:25:51 > 0:25:54I'm going to put a rafter here, a rafter here...
0:25:54 > 0:25:56A bit of improvisation as we go along.
0:25:56 > 0:25:57Tibby is a top-notch carpenter
0:25:57 > 0:26:01with six years experience under his tool belt.
0:26:01 > 0:26:05But this talented tradesman lacks just one basic skill.
0:26:05 > 0:26:07He struggles to cut corners.
0:26:08 > 0:26:12Anything I do, I like to do to the best of my abilities.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14I mean, even if something's not going to be seen,
0:26:14 > 0:26:16I like to do it as it's going to be seen, so,
0:26:16 > 0:26:19I'm a bit of a perfectionist.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22And this perfectionist nature has won him a wall full of awards
0:26:22 > 0:26:24and a legion of fans.
0:26:24 > 0:26:26Well, his own family.
0:26:26 > 0:26:29He's always had a lot of patience.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32When he's done anything, he's taken a lot of time
0:26:32 > 0:26:35to finish something off.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38He's always followed everything through,
0:26:38 > 0:26:40so, yeah, we're very proud of him.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45Tibby also uses his talents for a greater good.
0:26:45 > 0:26:49He recently transformed the holy room at his local Sikh temple.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52To transform this room, altogether it took, probably, about a year.
0:26:52 > 0:26:54That was working nights, weekends,
0:26:54 > 0:26:56sometimes we were doing all-nighters.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59But it was... I really enjoyed it.
0:27:03 > 0:27:05Voluntary work, in Punjabi it's called seva,
0:27:05 > 0:27:07which means "selfless service".
0:27:07 > 0:27:12Sikhs are encouraged to do selfless service, not just in Sikh temples
0:27:12 > 0:27:16but in hospitals, old people's homes and community centres, so...
0:27:16 > 0:27:18I like to always put something into the community.
0:27:20 > 0:27:23I feel a great sense of satisfaction inside.
0:27:26 > 0:27:27Back on the shop floor,
0:27:27 > 0:27:31the judges are looking for the best designer duck house,
0:27:31 > 0:27:34and Karl has got some big ideas.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37- That's going to be the top. - I've got you now, right.
0:27:37 > 0:27:40There's going to be, um...some pillars there for it to stand on.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43And that'll sit on top and then, hopefully... Go in over there.
0:27:43 > 0:27:46- These are massive ducks, Karl. - They are big ducks.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48They're huge ducks, OK.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53The clock is counting down and the judges are in the hush room
0:27:53 > 0:27:56to assess what the boys have knocked up so far.
0:27:56 > 0:28:00Peter, who's our heritage carpenter, he should be able to build us something beautiful
0:28:00 > 0:28:02and can sit in the garden of the Queen.
0:28:02 > 0:28:04But he's saying he's not experienced at roofing,
0:28:04 > 0:28:07so is he going to fall over with that roof? I'm worried.
0:28:07 > 0:28:10He's continually, kind of, making these excuses
0:28:10 > 0:28:12before he's made the mistake.
0:28:12 > 0:28:15Perfectionist Tibby, is following a basic design,
0:28:15 > 0:28:17but for him, the devil's in the detail
0:28:17 > 0:28:21and he seems to have forgotten there's also a deadline.
0:28:21 > 0:28:25Perfection's coming at a price. He seems way behind, at the moment.
0:28:25 > 0:28:27It's quite a simple design, he's doing,
0:28:27 > 0:28:29and he's still taking quite a while to do it.
0:28:29 > 0:28:3519-year-old Tom has taken on board the judges' comments from the first challenge, and is motoring through.
0:28:35 > 0:28:37He's a lovely lad, and I think he has the ability...
0:28:37 > 0:28:41He's definitely got the ability. He is a great carpenter, that's why he's here.
0:28:41 > 0:28:44I just want to see some passion coming out of him.
0:28:44 > 0:28:47Hopefully he can let it go in the next 20 minutes.
0:28:47 > 0:28:51- How did you get into carpentry? - Ever since I were at school, really.
0:28:51 > 0:28:55I've always enjoyed it and then me teachers
0:28:55 > 0:28:57kept pushing me and pushing me, cos I weren't the best
0:28:57 > 0:29:00at maths and English, this is what I could do.
0:29:00 > 0:29:03So I took it for GCSE and I come out top in the school.
0:29:03 > 0:29:06- Oh, well done, mate.- You have to do what you're interested in.
0:29:06 > 0:29:07Absolutely, mate.
0:29:07 > 0:29:10Tom, the youngest in the competition,
0:29:10 > 0:29:12was never one for burying his head in books,
0:29:12 > 0:29:15but found his confidence in carpentry.
0:29:15 > 0:29:18Tom struggled at school,
0:29:18 > 0:29:25but he found woodwork was something which he could gain points with.
0:29:25 > 0:29:30And because he's really tried, look what can happen.
0:29:32 > 0:29:34I mean, he could come home from school,
0:29:34 > 0:29:36lose himself in the garage for hours
0:29:36 > 0:29:39just messing about with wood, cutting and carving.
0:29:39 > 0:29:44He's gone from cluttering the house with his school woodwork projects
0:29:44 > 0:29:48to the consummate career carpenter for a home reservations company,
0:29:48 > 0:29:52tackling the countless timber-based tasks that come his way.
0:29:52 > 0:29:55I fit doors, windows, kitchens, all the little niggly bits.
0:29:55 > 0:29:58- LAUGHTER OFF CAMERA - Sometimes, too many to remember.
0:29:58 > 0:30:01I fit doors, windows, kitchens,
0:30:01 > 0:30:04stairs, roofing, stud work. We do absolutely everything.
0:30:04 > 0:30:09And winning the competition would be the final seal of approval.
0:30:09 > 0:30:12If I won Young Carpenter Of The Year, it would be a brilliant thing.
0:30:12 > 0:30:18It would really give him confidence and make him flourish even more.
0:30:18 > 0:30:2215 minutes left, guys. 15 minutes to go.
0:30:22 > 0:30:25With time running out,
0:30:25 > 0:30:30the carpenters are hard pushed to complete their homes on the water.
0:30:30 > 0:30:35Karl's house is on a grand scale, but has he set the bar too high?
0:30:35 > 0:30:38- Pretty ambitious design, that. - That is a very ambitious design.
0:30:38 > 0:30:43- You're a brave man.- Ambition's good, though. I like to see that.
0:30:43 > 0:30:47The judges are worried that Tom's house is still missing
0:30:47 > 0:30:49an essential element.
0:30:49 > 0:30:50The pitched roof.
0:30:50 > 0:30:54There needs to be a miracle, there needs to be a roof under that bench.
0:30:54 > 0:30:58I just cannot see him finishing or getting anywhere near done.
0:30:58 > 0:31:03Gentlemen, you've got five minutes to go. Five minutes left!
0:31:06 > 0:31:10With just minutes left, the boys are pulling out all the stops
0:31:10 > 0:31:12to try and complete the challenge.
0:31:12 > 0:31:14I see smoke. I see smoke.
0:31:15 > 0:31:19Five, four, three,
0:31:19 > 0:31:21two, one.
0:31:21 > 0:31:23Tools down, please.
0:31:23 > 0:31:27Time's up, and the judges need a closer look.
0:31:28 > 0:31:32Tom got the basic structure but, after a disastrous last round,
0:31:32 > 0:31:35has he done enough to stay in the competition?
0:31:35 > 0:31:37Tommy.
0:31:40 > 0:31:41Oh, dear.
0:31:41 > 0:31:42What happened?
0:31:42 > 0:31:46I've got a basic idea what I'm doing but it's going to take time.
0:31:46 > 0:31:49Well, I think what you've done you've done well.
0:31:49 > 0:31:53It's just a shame you didn't get a bit further down the road with it.
0:31:53 > 0:31:54Yeah.
0:31:54 > 0:31:59You just need to pick that pace up, and I think you'd have got that roof on.
0:31:59 > 0:32:02Perfectionist Tibby went back to basics with his design.
0:32:02 > 0:32:07He's got the pitched roof, but it looks like that's all he's got.
0:32:07 > 0:32:11- You did spend a long time doing all this beautiful detail up here.- Yeah.
0:32:11 > 0:32:15I didn't want to leave sharp edges, because my initial plan was to put
0:32:15 > 0:32:20felt strips down here and on the top as well, just obviously waterproof.
0:32:20 > 0:32:22But I just ran out of time.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26Karl's grand design looks impressive,
0:32:26 > 0:32:28but is it enough to wow the judges?
0:32:28 > 0:32:31You're happy with the height for the duck?
0:32:31 > 0:32:35- Yeah. Definitely.- We can get a first floor in there as well.
0:32:35 > 0:32:38- Upstairs and downstairs. - You're definitely ambitious.
0:32:38 > 0:32:43The final round before the elimination, so I just went all-out.
0:32:44 > 0:32:48Royal carpenter Peter was out of his comfort zone in this challenge,
0:32:48 > 0:32:51but has he managed to pull off a floating palace?
0:32:52 > 0:32:55- It's good.- I think you've cracked on really well with it.
0:32:55 > 0:32:57I'm really impressed by it.
0:32:57 > 0:33:00And, you know, it's a good design, I think.
0:33:00 > 0:33:04You know, it's whether it's going to float, and our ducks like it.
0:33:06 > 0:33:09Karl's calmed down a little bit now.
0:33:09 > 0:33:11The nerves have subsided a little bit
0:33:11 > 0:33:15and he's just trying to focus on what he's doing, basically.
0:33:15 > 0:33:18But I think maybe he's been a little bit too ambitious.
0:33:18 > 0:33:20Tom's done extremely well. He's had some difficulty
0:33:20 > 0:33:25but he's doing the best he can under the circumstances.
0:33:25 > 0:33:27I think Peter's duck house is looking OK.
0:33:27 > 0:33:29I'd have liked to have seen him do more to the roof
0:33:29 > 0:33:32rather than concentrate on the sides.
0:33:32 > 0:33:35His mother's been waiting about two years for one!
0:33:35 > 0:33:39Tibby's played it safe. At least it's got a roof on.
0:33:39 > 0:33:44I just hope it floats. And all the ducks are dry!
0:33:46 > 0:33:52Gentlemen, I'm sure you didn't think we were going to end this without putting your duck houses to the test.
0:33:52 > 0:33:55Can we have the doors open, please?
0:33:57 > 0:34:03It's the moment of truth. Will the duck houses sink or swim?
0:34:08 > 0:34:14So, this is it, carpenters. Please release your houses.
0:34:17 > 0:34:21How we doing? It's all right, they're all floating. So far, so good.
0:34:22 > 0:34:27- Perfect. They're all floating. - Could we bring in the ducks, please? Bring in the ducks!
0:34:29 > 0:34:31QUACKING
0:34:31 > 0:34:37# All the ducks are swimming in the water... #
0:34:37 > 0:34:40Never really commentated on ducks finding homes before.
0:34:44 > 0:34:48They're thinking about it, they're circling.
0:34:48 > 0:34:50Here we go. Come on.
0:34:50 > 0:34:55Yeah! We've got a winner, guys! We've got a winner!
0:34:57 > 0:34:59QUACKING
0:34:59 > 0:35:02All right, all right, all right.
0:35:08 > 0:35:14The thing with Tibby was there was too much time spent on trying to do all the intricate bits and pieces.
0:35:14 > 0:35:17And he just got bogged down in that detail.
0:35:17 > 0:35:23I think, out of all of them, his was maybe the best, sort of, finished.
0:35:23 > 0:35:26Whether it was the design that I liked most, I'm not quite sure.
0:35:26 > 0:35:31Tom, for me, he didn't seem to have a clear enough design in his head.
0:35:31 > 0:35:35We said to him that he needed to up his game. For whatever reason,
0:35:35 > 0:35:36he didn't do it.
0:35:36 > 0:35:41Karl. Bit of an ambitious design. I liked it, though.
0:35:41 > 0:35:44I just wish he'd have got a bit more of the outside or the roof on.
0:35:44 > 0:35:49We talked about how high his house was, would the ducks love it. They were the first ducks on board.
0:35:49 > 0:35:53Peter. I still don't quite get him.
0:35:53 > 0:35:57You know he's got the skill but he keeps making excuses for himself
0:35:57 > 0:36:00and why he's not doing good enough work.
0:36:00 > 0:36:06I've said all along it's about attitude. Attitude is something you've either got or you haven't.
0:36:06 > 0:36:12Carpenters, our judges have seen your skills over two rounds.
0:36:12 > 0:36:16- Phill, if you'd like to start the feedback with Tibby, please.- Yeah.
0:36:16 > 0:36:19Your duck house, although I'm still questioning
0:36:19 > 0:36:24whether that's a duck house, on the water it looked OK.
0:36:24 > 0:36:27Tom, what you did actually do, I think,
0:36:27 > 0:36:31had you had time to finish it, would have been, in my opinion,
0:36:31 > 0:36:35the best one, because I think you worked to a pretty high standard.
0:36:35 > 0:36:39Karl, we gave you some advice and you came out and you listened.
0:36:39 > 0:36:42Your design was bold but you only had so long in this task
0:36:42 > 0:36:45and you were well short of finishing.
0:36:45 > 0:36:49Peter, your attitude is still not there at the moment.
0:36:49 > 0:36:53I feel like you're making a lot of excuses about why you can't do something.
0:36:53 > 0:36:55The reality is, you can.
0:36:55 > 0:37:00The first carpenter to leave the competition...
0:37:05 > 0:37:08..is Tom.
0:37:15 > 0:37:20Although the judges were impressed by Tom's commitment to carpentry,
0:37:20 > 0:37:23in the first round he got lost in the maze of skirting board
0:37:23 > 0:37:26and in the second challenge the judges were looking for
0:37:26 > 0:37:31a spark of creativity, but his duck house failed to come up to the mark.
0:37:33 > 0:37:37Overall, I chose the most complicated design, so, yeah,
0:37:37 > 0:37:40if I had got it all done it would have been the wow factor
0:37:40 > 0:37:45and it would have been impressive, but I just couldn't get it all done.
0:37:45 > 0:37:47Yeah. Well done.
0:37:47 > 0:37:50Well done for getting through to the final three, guys.
0:37:50 > 0:37:55- Peter, how are you feeling?- Relieved. - You think you can get a little more positive?- Mm, yeah.
0:37:55 > 0:37:59- The "mm" before the "yeah", Peter, that's hardly positive.- Yeah.
0:37:59 > 0:38:02'I thought the feedback was bang on.'
0:38:02 > 0:38:06I've got to keep my design more simple and deliver a really good piece of carpentry.
0:38:06 > 0:38:09'I'm hoping I'll stick around for the final'
0:38:09 > 0:38:12and hopefully get better each time and hopefully win the title.
0:38:12 > 0:38:17'I'm glad I got through. I don't really understand what they mean about me attitude still.'
0:38:17 > 0:38:22I'll try to change it again, but I tried changing it for this round and it didn't make any difference.
0:38:22 > 0:38:24Coming up, we tighten the vice,
0:38:24 > 0:38:27as the remaining three get the grilling of their lives.
0:38:27 > 0:38:30Not too sure on that one. It's not something that I use.
0:38:30 > 0:38:32Do you want to keep thinking?
0:38:32 > 0:38:35And the final two go head-to-head in the ultimate test
0:38:35 > 0:38:39to determine who will take the title.
0:38:39 > 0:38:44The first young Carpenter Of The Year is...
0:38:44 > 0:38:49So, gentlemen, time for our judges to find out a little bit about you,
0:38:49 > 0:38:53find out just how passionate you are about your profession.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55- Are you ready, Tibby? - I'm ready, yeah.- Yeah?
0:38:55 > 0:38:58- The judges are through there. Good luck, mate.- Cheers.
0:39:07 > 0:39:12Tibby, in manufactured boards, what does the term letter MR stand for?
0:39:12 > 0:39:14- Moisture resistance. - BING!
0:39:14 > 0:39:18- Moisture resistant? - BING!
0:39:18 > 0:39:21- Moisture resistant? - BING!
0:39:21 > 0:39:22When using an air compressor,
0:39:22 > 0:39:27which three items of safety clothing should you wear?
0:39:27 > 0:39:32Er, you should have your safety goggles on and, I would say, some gloves.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35Some protective...gloves.
0:39:35 > 0:39:37Do you want to keep thinking?
0:39:37 > 0:39:40- I'm not sure on that one. - BUZZER
0:39:40 > 0:39:42Goggles
0:39:43 > 0:39:45Dust mask.
0:39:47 > 0:39:48- And earplugs. - BUZZER
0:39:50 > 0:39:53- Goggles, ear defenders and boots? - BING!
0:39:53 > 0:39:58What is the name of the vertical structure that divides a window into sections?
0:39:58 > 0:40:01- Er, a transom. - BUZZER
0:40:03 > 0:40:05- Mullion? - BING!
0:40:05 > 0:40:08- Er, that would be a mullion. - BING!
0:40:08 > 0:40:10OK, Karl, which is the odd one out,
0:40:10 > 0:40:15a half lap, a scarf joint or a loose tongue?
0:40:16 > 0:40:18- Loose tongue. - BING!
0:40:21 > 0:40:25- You've done plenty of these. - Yeah, I know what a half lap is. Scarf joint...
0:40:25 > 0:40:29I think I know what that is. Loose tongue...
0:40:29 > 0:40:31- I'd say a scarf joint. - BUZZER
0:40:35 > 0:40:37- Going to go for loose tongue. - BING!
0:40:37 > 0:40:41Why do you think you should be Young Carpenter Of The Year?
0:40:41 > 0:40:44I've got great passion, committed, dedicated.
0:40:44 > 0:40:47I think I'm just very creative, very innovative.
0:40:47 > 0:40:53I love the passion of working at Windsor Castle and fixing something the Queen or the Duke might use,
0:40:53 > 0:40:56doors and gates that have been there for hundreds of years.
0:40:56 > 0:40:59Could you see you being there for hundreds of years?
0:40:59 > 0:41:03Maybe not hundreds of years but hopefully a few, 50, 60 years.
0:41:03 > 0:41:07I think I'm 110% passionate about what I do.
0:41:07 > 0:41:12It is a big part of my life, so I'm just trying my best to get there.
0:41:12 > 0:41:16Anything I do, I do to perfection, and I use the correct methods,
0:41:16 > 0:41:21- and I think I should be the Young Carpenter Of The Year, yeah. - Thank you.- Thanks. Cheers.
0:41:23 > 0:41:29In the grilling, Karl answered seven out of the ten questions correctly.
0:41:29 > 0:41:31Tibby did better, with eight.
0:41:31 > 0:41:35But in this round Peter had the highest score, of nine.
0:41:37 > 0:41:40'I think I did quite well, to be honest with you.'
0:41:40 > 0:41:46I slipped up on a couple, but...I was quite quick. I'm not sure if that was a good thing.
0:41:46 > 0:41:52- I got a couple of questions wrong, two or three, I don't know.- How many questions were there?- About ten.
0:41:52 > 0:41:55I think I've done enough to stay.
0:41:55 > 0:41:59In the practical I've used the correct methods all the time,
0:41:59 > 0:42:02which none of the other competitors did.
0:42:02 > 0:42:08'I felt I could have done better. I think it would be a shame if I went, failing on a few theory questions.'
0:42:08 > 0:42:13I'd be quite disappointed if I left now, but I've done my best, so I'm pleased with that.
0:42:14 > 0:42:18Jai, I've got a smile on my face, because they all did so well.
0:42:18 > 0:42:21None of them have surprised me. They've all raised their game.
0:42:21 > 0:42:25We knew that Karl was good technically. Tibby too, to be fair.
0:42:25 > 0:42:27- Yeah, Tibby too.- Peter surprised me.
0:42:27 > 0:42:31I didn't think he'd know that much technically, looking at his job.
0:42:31 > 0:42:34If we look over the three challenges, though, who enthuses,
0:42:34 > 0:42:40who makes you believe that they can create something wonderful for you?
0:42:40 > 0:42:42I believe, in this industry,
0:42:42 > 0:42:45you have to sell yourself as much as your craft.
0:42:45 > 0:42:51It's so, so tough, and I thought it was going to be easy. The fact is that one of them has to go.
0:42:56 > 0:42:59We've got three carpenters, only two places in the final.
0:42:59 > 0:43:02If we can start with Tibby, please.
0:43:02 > 0:43:06Tibby, I believe you have the passion and you have the finesse,
0:43:06 > 0:43:11all the things that I'd require as a potential employer or a client.
0:43:11 > 0:43:14But you really do need to find a balance between that perfectionism
0:43:14 > 0:43:17and keeping up the momentum.
0:43:18 > 0:43:22Peter, I know you love carpentry,
0:43:22 > 0:43:26that to you this is more than a trade, this is a skill for you.
0:43:26 > 0:43:29But I worry about where you'd go from Windsor Castle.
0:43:29 > 0:43:34For you to get through, Peter, I have to see that ambition from you.
0:43:37 > 0:43:42Karl, you've got the skill and the craft,
0:43:42 > 0:43:44but I do believe you are overambitious.
0:43:44 > 0:43:48You attack things without much forethought.
0:43:48 > 0:43:54I worry that you haven't got that balance between getting the job done and creating something beautiful.
0:43:55 > 0:44:01All right, gentlemen, the next carpenter to leave the competition is...
0:44:08 > 0:44:10It's you, Peter.
0:44:11 > 0:44:14- Well done for getting this far. - Thank you.
0:44:21 > 0:44:25Peter showed off his skills with skirting in the first round
0:44:25 > 0:44:28but in the second challenge he had problems with the roof
0:44:28 > 0:44:32and, although he did well in the grilling, the judges felt he lacked ambition
0:44:32 > 0:44:36and overall didn't have enough to keep him in the competition.
0:44:36 > 0:44:39Thanks. All right, thanks.
0:44:39 > 0:44:42'I've won competitions before based on my joinery,'
0:44:42 > 0:44:46so I just feel I've been kicked out of this because of my attitude and people skills.
0:44:47 > 0:44:51So, Tibby, Karl. You're through to the final.
0:44:51 > 0:44:55One of you will be crowned Young Carpenter Of The Year.
0:45:00 > 0:45:02- How are you feeling?- All right.
0:45:02 > 0:45:06'Absolutely fantastic. We're so pleased, over the moon.'
0:45:06 > 0:45:10Absolutely over the moon. Me nerves are shot to bits, though.
0:45:12 > 0:45:16It's been a good experience. To be in the top two, though, just...
0:45:16 > 0:45:19feels good.
0:45:19 > 0:45:23- Well, just stay calm and just do everything, take everything... - Just be focused.- Yeah.
0:45:27 > 0:45:31It's time for the final face-off, and the pressure's on.
0:45:31 > 0:45:35It's in front of an audience made up of family and friends.
0:45:35 > 0:45:39Welcome back our two finalists. APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:45:42 > 0:45:47So, there's two of you left but only one title up for grabs.
0:45:47 > 0:45:50Judges, what have you got planned for 'em?
0:45:50 > 0:45:55You've got just three hours to fit and finish a domestic kitchen.
0:46:00 > 0:46:03Your time starts now.
0:46:06 > 0:46:09With nothing more than a plan to follow,
0:46:09 > 0:46:12Karl and Tibby have to build a kitchen from scratch.
0:46:12 > 0:46:15Two of the country's top young carpenters,
0:46:15 > 0:46:19our boys have just three hours to complete the task.
0:46:19 > 0:46:21That means no tea breaks, lads.
0:46:23 > 0:46:27They will have to fit the cupboards, doors, drawers, handles,
0:46:27 > 0:46:31worktops, washing machines, a hob and an oven.
0:46:31 > 0:46:36Basically everything. Including the kitchen sink.
0:46:40 > 0:46:42The lads crack on with the kitchens,
0:46:42 > 0:46:46but the judges aren't happy with their plan of attack.
0:46:46 > 0:46:47Judges, what are we thinking?
0:46:47 > 0:46:51- Ooh, that's not a good face. - Not my best face.
0:46:51 > 0:46:56Karl, when we told him the challenge, the look on his face was, "I haven't got enough time."
0:46:56 > 0:46:58He's gone in... bull in a china shop.
0:47:00 > 0:47:03And Tibby's on a go-slow.
0:47:03 > 0:47:08I kind of see him measuring so much and I'm just thinking, is he going to get bogged down again?
0:47:08 > 0:47:12He might struggle, because there are things later on, cutting a hole in a worktop,
0:47:12 > 0:47:17he's going to be really precise with that and take a long time.
0:47:17 > 0:47:19But, regardless of the time pressure,
0:47:19 > 0:47:22Tibby refuses to do a rushed job.
0:47:22 > 0:47:25- He's very methodical, isn't he? - He is, yeah.
0:47:25 > 0:47:29When he does do his work, he's representing carpenters, so he doesn't want to do a bad job.
0:47:29 > 0:47:32Do you get him doing much stuff for you around the house?
0:47:32 > 0:47:36- I've got a list when he's finished! - Really?- He's got a long list.
0:47:38 > 0:47:41Karl is looking at home in his kitchen.
0:47:41 > 0:47:46- So, Christine, he's really passionate about his trade?- He is very, yeah.
0:47:46 > 0:47:51- Did he show any leanings towards it when he was younger?- He always wanted a real power workshop toy
0:47:51 > 0:47:58but I'd never let him because I thought it was too dangerous. And now look what he's doing!
0:47:58 > 0:48:01Despite their different working styles,
0:48:01 > 0:48:03Karl and Tibby are neck and neck.
0:48:03 > 0:48:06Their kitchens are starting to take shape.
0:48:06 > 0:48:10What they don't realise is that they have both made a fatal blunder.
0:48:15 > 0:48:18- Right, guys, what's going on? I see there's trouble brewing here.- Yeah.
0:48:18 > 0:48:21They've gone straight into it, put the units in,
0:48:21 > 0:48:27but there needs to be, between one run of units and the other, a little corner post.
0:48:27 > 0:48:31A corner post is the most vital part of a fitted kitchen.
0:48:31 > 0:48:33It keeps distance between two corner units.
0:48:33 > 0:48:37Without this, you will not be able to open drawers or cupboards,
0:48:37 > 0:48:40and the kitchen is quite frankly a waste of space.
0:48:40 > 0:48:44They've both forgotten to put it in, and they're going to find out
0:48:44 > 0:48:48when they see that bit of wood on the floor.
0:48:48 > 0:48:50Disaster.
0:48:51 > 0:48:57The carpenters are clueless about the huge mistake they've made.
0:48:57 > 0:49:01There is a chance that they won't pick it up until we try and open those drawers.
0:49:01 > 0:49:03Then I'd like to see their faces.
0:49:03 > 0:49:08Stop press. The judges think they can breathe a sigh of relief,
0:49:08 > 0:49:10as Tibby discovers the corner post.
0:49:10 > 0:49:12Tibby's just picked it up.
0:49:12 > 0:49:15But they cannot believe what they're seeing.
0:49:15 > 0:49:18He's used it as a guide, clamped it to his worktop,
0:49:18 > 0:49:23and he's now got a saw on the end of his worktop.
0:49:23 > 0:49:27He hasn't realised. That's a massively important part of his kitchen.
0:49:27 > 0:49:31- He's going to be gutted when he realises he's done that.- Devastated.
0:49:31 > 0:49:34With both carpenters completely missing the point
0:49:34 > 0:49:37of a corner post, the judges have no choice
0:49:37 > 0:49:40but to look for good workmanship in the rest of the kitchen.
0:49:40 > 0:49:45Gentlemen, you've got one hour left, one hour to go.
0:49:47 > 0:49:49Time is not on their side
0:49:49 > 0:49:53and the boys are really up against it to get the job finished.
0:49:53 > 0:49:57And Karl is feeling the pressure.
0:49:57 > 0:50:02You don't really get your builder coming round and fitting your kitchen in three hours, do you?
0:50:02 > 0:50:06- Nah, it just proves now that it can be done.- It hasn't been done yet.
0:50:06 > 0:50:08Right, OK. Crack on, mate.
0:50:08 > 0:50:11Feeling his shot at the title is under real threat,
0:50:11 > 0:50:17Karl plays a tactical move in an effort to psych out the competition.
0:50:17 > 0:50:23Karl's actually chose to get the oven and get that put in, which at this stage of the game...
0:50:23 > 0:50:26If he's trying to psychologically think that he's further ahead,
0:50:26 > 0:50:29it looks more complete but actually it's not.
0:50:29 > 0:50:32With Karl looking like he's ahead of the game for the first time,
0:50:32 > 0:50:34Tibby loses his cool.
0:50:39 > 0:50:43- Is there anything you're worried about, Tibby? - Obviously time is a problem.
0:50:43 > 0:50:45He has no time for small talk.
0:50:45 > 0:50:49I suppose it's quite hard, though, when you're used to being Mr Perfect.
0:50:49 > 0:50:51Well, yeah. Yeah.
0:50:51 > 0:50:56The only thing on Tibby's mind right now is getting the job done.
0:50:56 > 0:50:59Chaps, you've got half an hour left. Half an hour to go.
0:51:01 > 0:51:02With the clock ticking,
0:51:02 > 0:51:06the judges are worried the boys aren't going to finish.
0:51:06 > 0:51:11Is there anything you think that you've got to get in the next sort of 20 minutes, 25 minutes?
0:51:11 > 0:51:13I think, get the cooker in there.
0:51:13 > 0:51:15- What about sinks and...- Hobs.
0:51:15 > 0:51:17Struggling for time a bit, really.
0:51:17 > 0:51:21You're having to graft, aren't you, to get this done in three hours?
0:51:21 > 0:51:24Oh, yeah. Concentrating on the quality as well.
0:51:24 > 0:51:28Whilst Tibby is focusing on quality, Karl is all about the quantity.
0:51:28 > 0:51:32He's doing bits all over the place, he's putting an oven in
0:51:32 > 0:51:35and doing a worktop, looking at draws and that sort of thing,
0:51:35 > 0:51:41whereas Tibby is on the worktops, he's going to stay on the worktops till he's finished the worktops.
0:51:43 > 0:51:44With minutes left,
0:51:44 > 0:51:48the carpenters frantically try to finish their dream kitchens.
0:51:50 > 0:51:53One minute left now, guys. One minute left.
0:51:54 > 0:51:58At the last second, Karl finds a use for his corner post.
0:51:58 > 0:52:00Just not the right one.
0:52:00 > 0:52:03Five, four, three,
0:52:03 > 0:52:05two, one.
0:52:05 > 0:52:11That's it, gentlemen. Carpenters, tools down, please. Well done.
0:52:11 > 0:52:13Give them a big round of applause, guys.
0:52:15 > 0:52:18With the final challenge now complete,
0:52:18 > 0:52:20the judges want a closer look at their handiwork.
0:52:22 > 0:52:24Karl got the hob, oven and sink in,
0:52:24 > 0:52:29but didn't finish his cupboards and drawers, leaving the job half done.
0:52:29 > 0:52:33Tibby managed to fit the cupboards, drawers, doors and oven,
0:52:33 > 0:52:35but no hob or sink.
0:52:35 > 0:52:38The brief was to build a fully functioning kitchen
0:52:38 > 0:52:42and perfectionist Tibby is about to find out
0:52:42 > 0:52:45he missed a vital piece of the jigsaw.
0:52:45 > 0:52:48Tibby, one thing we noticed pretty early on
0:52:48 > 0:52:52is that you needed that corner post to push all these units up this way.
0:52:52 > 0:52:57Your drawers are going to hit your handles.
0:52:57 > 0:53:01You actually used it as a straight edge when you were cutting
0:53:01 > 0:53:05the worktop, you had it in your hand, you were that close to it.
0:53:05 > 0:53:07Just rushing, you make mistakes.
0:53:07 > 0:53:09Well, that's a costly mistake.
0:53:10 > 0:53:15- The bad news is that you didn't fit that corner post, Tibby.- Yeah.
0:53:15 > 0:53:18The good news is... that neither did Karl.
0:53:18 > 0:53:22Karl is gutted that he also failed to spot the post.
0:53:22 > 0:53:27As you flagged up, I did make the same mistake as Tibby with the corner post.
0:53:27 > 0:53:30- You found a use for it, though.- Yeah.
0:53:30 > 0:53:34No, it should have gone there, so I'm kicking myself about that.
0:53:34 > 0:53:37But it isn't a complete washout for Karl.
0:53:37 > 0:53:42One thing that Tibby didn't manage to do was sinks and hobs.
0:53:43 > 0:53:47One massive thing you've managed to do on your worktop is get a hob in.
0:53:47 > 0:53:49A lot of work, in that time.
0:53:49 > 0:53:54- Considering your face when we told you you had three hours, you've done quite well, mate.- Thank you.
0:53:57 > 0:54:01I'm a bit surprised you missed that corner piece.
0:54:01 > 0:54:06- I just didn't think of it, really. - You can practise at home.- Yeah.
0:54:06 > 0:54:08There's a few mistakes I made.
0:54:08 > 0:54:11But obviously, with the pressure and the time limit,
0:54:11 > 0:54:14I've done the best I can really.
0:54:14 > 0:54:17I really did give it my best shot there.
0:54:17 > 0:54:20I'm feeling quite pleased. Quite relieved that it's over!
0:54:23 > 0:54:27Well, we came into this knowing that they had a massive uphill task
0:54:27 > 0:54:30to get a kitchen finished in three hours.
0:54:30 > 0:54:33The mistakes that we saw out there, you know,
0:54:33 > 0:54:39under that amount of pressure, I kind of feel for them a little bit. I'm going to give them that.
0:54:39 > 0:54:41Both Karl and Tibby have performed really well.
0:54:41 > 0:54:45They've both got a great attitude, they go about their work
0:54:45 > 0:54:49in a way that would please me, but one has still shone through for me.
0:54:49 > 0:54:52One of these guys has that finesse
0:54:52 > 0:54:55- which I think takes him a step above the rest.- Yeah.
0:54:55 > 0:54:59- I think we've got a decision, yeah.- Good stuff.
0:55:03 > 0:55:08OK, it's time to crown our winner. Our judges have made their decision.
0:55:08 > 0:55:11Let's bring back our two finalists.
0:55:22 > 0:55:25You've both impressed our judges along the way
0:55:25 > 0:55:30but only one of you will be going home Young Carpenter Of The Year.
0:55:30 > 0:55:34Tibby, you've got a passion for carpentry that has shone through
0:55:34 > 0:55:36right from the very start.
0:55:36 > 0:55:38I think you'd be a pleasure to work alongside.
0:55:38 > 0:55:43Karl, you're an out-and-out grafter with a huge talent and
0:55:43 > 0:55:48I think your work's going to bring a lot of people great satisfaction.
0:55:48 > 0:55:52OK, guys, it's crunch time. This is it.
0:55:52 > 0:55:56The first ever Young Carpenter Of The Year is...
0:56:02 > 0:56:04..Tibby. APPLAUSE
0:56:13 > 0:56:15Mate, well done. Well done.
0:56:15 > 0:56:20Gobsmacked. To win this is just unbelievable.
0:56:20 > 0:56:23I can't believe it. I'm Young Carpenter Of The Year. Yeah.
0:56:26 > 0:56:31So, it's been an incredible competition, and congratulations to Tibby,
0:56:31 > 0:56:36the winner of Young Carpenter Of The Year. Good night.
