:00:37. > :00:42.Good evening and welcome to Glasgow ka teed ral, this ancient church --

:00:42. > :00:47.cathedral. This ancient church stood as Scottish history unfolded

:00:47. > :00:52.through tumult and triumph alike. Today it was on service, a

:00:52. > :01:02.cathedral service to praise royal service, a service of Thanksgiving

:01:02. > :01:05.

:01:05. > :01:09.to mark Her Majesty the Queen's In the choir there you see the

:01:09. > :01:13.various politicians waiting for their place. Look back a couple of

:01:13. > :01:16.rows, you can see members of the Police Service and the other

:01:16. > :01:24.emergency services, of course, they are there in their place. But it's

:01:24. > :01:30.also a tribute to the work they do. This is a Christian,

:01:30. > :01:35.interdenominational service. You see Cardinal Dara O'Briain. Also

:01:35. > :01:39.other -- Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien. Also other denominations.

:01:39. > :01:43.As well as a Christian service this is an interfaith occasion.

:01:43. > :01:47.Representatives of the Muslim community, representatives of the

:01:47. > :01:53.Buddhist community and at the end there you can see representative

:01:53. > :01:59.from the Greek Orthodox Church all incite varietyed. -- invited. In

:01:59. > :02:02.the cross itself there, it's 70 years old. But it's attached to a

:02:02. > :02:05.pillar, 700 years old, right at the centre of the cross, you can see

:02:06. > :02:10.the symbol of the lamb of God. I draw this to your attention,

:02:10. > :02:12.because this will feature in the sermon, delivered by the moderator

:02:12. > :02:17.of the General Assmebly of the Church of Scotland. The lamb of God

:02:17. > :02:21.representing the idea of uplift from Christ. It's the idea of

:02:21. > :02:23.triumphing over disaster and the moderator will talk about that in

:02:23. > :02:28.the contemporary context of the difficulties that Scotland and the

:02:28. > :02:34.United Kingdom is facing. But as well as that, as well as the

:02:34. > :02:38.history, also young people in the congregation, five young pupils

:02:38. > :02:42.from schools across Glasgow who will lead prayers as part of the

:02:42. > :02:45.service, as part of the service which commemorates and marks the

:02:45. > :02:50.Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, the Queen. There's the heralds arriving

:02:50. > :02:55.into their place, waiting to greet Her Majesty, the Queen, as she

:02:55. > :02:58.arrives very shortly indeed. Now that will play a large part, of

:02:58. > :03:01.course, the signal of the opening of the service and those young

:03:01. > :03:11.people will be leading the prayers when the service proper gets under

:03:11. > :03:11.

:03:11. > :03:15.way. Her Majesty, the Queen, arriving

:03:15. > :03:19.outside Glasgow Cathedral. Greeted by cheering crowds, many of whom

:03:19. > :03:22.have been waiting for hours. I arrived myself rather early this

:03:22. > :03:26.morning, but not early enough to beat the crowds. They were queuing

:03:26. > :03:30.from the beginning, the Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip, the

:03:30. > :03:37.Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen moving forward to greet those who will

:03:37. > :03:46.lead the service. The moderator there, Albert Bogle. The minister

:08:17. > :08:56.

:08:56. > :09:06.# Amen. For I know the plans that I have

:09:06. > :09:22.

:09:22. > :09:31.for you, says the Lord and they are Almighty God, you are the glory of

:09:31. > :09:35.all the nations. By your hand you send the planets coursing on their

:09:35. > :09:43.way and at your commanding, the stars come out by number. And yet

:09:43. > :09:47.your eye remains upon each of us, each of us known and loved. We

:09:47. > :09:52.gather now as a nation in Thanksgiving and joy for the

:09:52. > :09:59.blessing you have given us in our Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth,

:09:59. > :10:05.and that your goodness has brought her to this present hour. Enable us

:10:05. > :10:13.to recognise your unfolding plan behind the passage of these special

:10:13. > :10:17.years, a plan, indeed, for good. Forgive us if we've been heedless

:10:17. > :10:26.of the guidance and care that comes alone from you, which has never

:10:26. > :10:31.failed us, nor ever shall. Let these continue to shine and lead us

:10:31. > :10:37.onward, until, at length, your good plan, for all the nations, comes to

:10:37. > :10:43.pass. This, we ask, through Jesus Christ

:10:43. > :10:50.our Lord, who taught us when we pray to say together: Our Father,

:10:50. > :10:57.which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy

:10:57. > :11:02.will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily

:11:02. > :11:08.bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass

:11:08. > :11:14.against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

:11:14. > :11:21.evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and

:11:21. > :11:25.ever. Amen. Following the Lord's prayer, the

:11:25. > :11:35.first lesson will be read by the First Minister of Scotland, Alex

:11:35. > :11:41.

:11:41. > :11:44.Salmond. He's being escorted to his God is our refuge and present in

:11:44. > :11:47.ever present help and trouble, therefore we will not fear. Though

:11:47. > :11:52.the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of

:11:52. > :11:55.the sea, though its waters roll and foam and the mown tinds quake with

:11:55. > :11:59.their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of

:12:00. > :12:04.God, the holy place where the most high dwells. God is within her. She

:12:04. > :12:08.will not fall. God will help her at the break of day. Nations are in

:12:08. > :12:13.uproar. Kingdoms fall. He lifts his voice. The earth melts. The Lord

:12:13. > :12:18.almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see

:12:18. > :12:22.what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the

:12:22. > :12:26.earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the

:12:26. > :12:31.bowl and shatters the spear. He burns the shields of fire. He says,

:12:31. > :12:36.be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations.

:12:36. > :12:46.I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord almighty is with us. The God

:12:46. > :12:51.

:12:51. > :12:54.of Jacob is our fortress. Then the angel showed me the river of the

:12:54. > :13:00.water of life as clear as crystal, flowing from the thrown of God and

:13:00. > :13:08.of the lamb, down the middle of the great street of the city. On each

:13:08. > :13:15.side of the river stood the Tree of Life, bearing 12 crops of fruit.

:13:15. > :13:22.Yielding its fruit every month and the leaves of the tree are for the

:13:22. > :13:28.healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne

:13:28. > :13:38.of God and of the lamb will be in the city and his servants will

:13:38. > :13:44.serve him. They will see his face and his name will be on their

:13:44. > :13:52.foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light

:13:52. > :14:02.of a lamb or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them

:14:02. > :14:18.

:14:18. > :14:25.light and they will reign forever # Tell out, my soul, the greatness

:14:25. > :14:33.of the Lord! # Unnumbered blessings give my

:14:33. > :14:42.spirit voice. # Tender to me the promise of his

:14:42. > :14:48.word. # In God my Saviour shall my heart

:16:48. > :17:00.

:17:00. > :17:03.reading -- the hymn fades away. Then James and John, the sons of

:17:03. > :17:07.Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "We want you o do for us

:17:07. > :17:11.whatever we ask." "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. They

:17:11. > :17:14.replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in

:17:14. > :17:17.your glory." "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can

:17:17. > :17:25.you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am

:17:25. > :17:29.baptized with?" "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You

:17:29. > :17:33.will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am

:17:33. > :17:37.baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to

:17:37. > :17:40.grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."

:17:40. > :17:45.When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and

:17:45. > :17:48.John. Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who

:17:48. > :17:54.are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and

:17:54. > :18:02.their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with

:18:02. > :18:12.you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your

:18:12. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:17.servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For

:18:17. > :18:27.even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to

:31:46. > :32:04.

:32:05. > :32:09.In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. I

:32:09. > :32:14.would like to invite you to join with me in reflecting upon the

:32:14. > :32:19.significance of three metaphors found in this reading from

:32:19. > :32:23.revelation chapter 22, verse one. The first speaks of the lamb upon

:32:23. > :32:28.the throne, the second is the city and the third is the river. I

:32:28. > :32:33.believe that we can draw meaning and inspiration for our lives and

:32:33. > :32:37.our communities from these metaphors in John's vision. You

:32:37. > :32:42.know, in times of great change and re-ordering of societies, those who

:32:42. > :32:49.are in leadership require a wisdom that goes beyond their years. They

:32:49. > :32:54.require knowledge that allows change to be rooted in justice and

:32:54. > :32:58.integrity. Successful leaders inevitably will have inner

:32:58. > :33:04.spiritual resources that sustain and strengthen them, giving them

:33:04. > :33:09.courage to lead. Of all the nations in the world, we in the British

:33:09. > :33:14.Isles, and the Commonwealth, have been blessed by the instinting

:33:14. > :33:19.dedication of Her Majesty, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

:33:19. > :33:23.During these past 60 years of unprecedented change, Her Majesty

:33:23. > :33:31.has brought the continuity and insight of a wise and gifted

:33:31. > :33:39.monarch, acting as a counsellor and confidante to many a Prime Minister

:33:39. > :33:42.and world leader and sometimes, a humble parish minister. At the

:33:42. > :33:49.coronation, the then moderator of the General Assmebly presented Her

:33:49. > :33:54.Majesty with a copy of the Bible. While the archbishop of Canterbury

:33:54. > :34:00.said these words: "We present you with this book, the most valuable

:34:00. > :34:08.thing that this world affords. He was wisdom. This is the royal law.

:34:08. > :34:12.These are the lively orkulz of God. "Here then lies the source that has

:34:12. > :34:18.sustained Her Majesty. To be crowned Queen is to believe that

:34:18. > :34:24.you have been called of God to this high and noble office. With it

:34:24. > :34:30.comes a promise of dedication and commitment to God and the people.

:34:30. > :34:36.It is a covenant for life. You know, the word "covenant" is an ancient

:34:36. > :34:41.word and its roots are in the old testament. To make a covenant is to

:34:41. > :34:49.per sue the welfare of the promise that you have made even if it is of

:34:49. > :34:55.a costly nature to self. It is to dedicate one's self to the promise.

:34:55. > :34:59.Archbishop Ralph Vaughan Williams last month paraphrasing some of the

:34:59. > :35:01.vows said, "It was as if she was saying, I have no goals if they are

:35:02. > :35:07.not the goals of this community. I have no well being, no happiness

:35:07. > :35:12.that is not the well being of the community. What will make me

:35:12. > :35:18.content or happy is what makes for the good of this particular part of

:35:18. > :35:28.human family." In many ways, statements like these

:35:28. > :35:29.

:35:29. > :35:36.are to speak the language of heaven. It is to hear God say, I am for you.

:35:36. > :35:41.It is to seek to establish a part of heaven on earth in a way that

:35:41. > :35:46.the Celtic monks spoke of their monasteries as colonies of heaven

:35:46. > :35:51.amidst the people. So the throne speaks to us of the power of

:35:51. > :35:58.service that comes through sacrifice and points the nation to

:35:58. > :36:03.the joy of living in service to each other. Hanging over the

:36:03. > :36:10.communion table in this cathedral is a cross. If you look closely at

:36:10. > :36:18.the heart of this cross, there is a lamb being crucified. The lamb upon

:36:18. > :36:24.the throne is the great Gospel paradox of power. He would be great

:36:24. > :36:33.among you must first be the servant of all. The lamb is the one who

:36:33. > :36:41.gives his life a random for many. Thus he is worthy to receive honour,

:36:41. > :36:46.power and glory. So what of the second metaphor, the city? The

:36:46. > :36:51.Bible begins the creativity of God in a garden and it concludes it in

:36:51. > :36:58.a city. Perhaps we need to pay more attention to the cities. They need

:36:58. > :37:03.rivers of healing running through their streets. These words from the

:37:03. > :37:09.Book of Revelation may soundess tairk and far removed from the --

:37:09. > :37:13.sound esoteric and far removed from contemporary lives, but they speak

:37:13. > :37:17.it a generation in search of a moment land, a city where the

:37:17. > :37:22.streets have no names, to paraphrase a quote from U2. For

:37:22. > :37:29.deep down, in the human heart, there is a yearning for something

:37:30. > :37:34.we have lost and never had. A feeling of being home sick. The

:37:34. > :37:41.writer of the Hebrews describes it as looking for the city that is to

:37:41. > :37:47.come. All over the world, people are migrating to cities looking for

:37:47. > :37:51.something that will make them better. Our cities, for many people,

:37:51. > :37:59.are places of violence and inequality. Where the purpose of

:37:59. > :38:04.economy seems to serve the few at the expense of the many. But here,

:38:04. > :38:09.in this metaphor is a city where healing and harmony flows through

:38:09. > :38:12.the streets from the throne. It is on occasions like this, that our

:38:12. > :38:18.eyes are lifted towards thing that's are beyond the material to

:38:18. > :38:22.that which is spiritual and enriching. We have come here to

:38:22. > :38:29.think of the things that in the words of the apostle Paul are noble,

:38:29. > :38:35.true and praise worthy. Surely, we come here to this magnificent

:38:35. > :38:40.cathedral to be inspired, to be renewed, to dare to believe in a

:38:40. > :38:48.vision that our cities themselves can be transformed by the power of

:38:48. > :38:55.prayer and the example of service into communities of Jubilee hope.

:38:55. > :39:01.And what of the river? The river that flows from the throne is in

:39:01. > :39:08.the middle of the great city. Well this reminds us there is a river

:39:08. > :39:13.that makes glad the city of God. All cities have their rivers. And

:39:13. > :39:18.there is no city that could be prouder of its river than Glasgow.

:39:18. > :39:24.This city has the Clyde and it has been the source of wealth and the

:39:24. > :39:28.life of the inhabitants of the great city from the days of St

:39:28. > :39:32.Mungo to the present time. In this river some of the first Christians

:39:32. > :39:38.in Glasgow were baptised. In this river some of the greatest ships

:39:38. > :39:43.that have touched a thousand ports have been launched. This river has

:39:43. > :39:48.brought great joy. But here in my text this morning, we are

:39:48. > :39:51.connecting with the river as the source of joy in the city of God.

:39:51. > :39:58.It is of the presence of the spirit of God flowing like a river into

:39:58. > :40:07.the lives of his people. It speaks the justice flowing like a river

:40:07. > :40:10.and righteousness like a never ending stream. As we celebrate this,

:40:10. > :40:16.Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee, perhaps we might let the wisdom

:40:16. > :40:21.from the most valuable book in the world speak to our hearts, by

:40:21. > :40:28.allowing the lamb upon the throne to speak of the forgiveness of sins

:40:29. > :40:36.and the joy of service. The city of God to become the model to build

:40:36. > :40:45.our cities upon. And the old testament concept of Jubilee, to be

:40:45. > :40:51.a river making justice for the poor, a hall mark of our nation. In doing

:40:51. > :40:55.such things, may this become the greatest lasting tribute to a Godly

:40:55. > :41:04.monarch on her throne. In the name of the Father, the Son

:41:04. > :41:11.and the Holy Spirit, Amman. -- Amen. Let us pray together.

:41:11. > :41:15.God of time and eternity, whose son reigns as servant, not master, we

:41:15. > :41:18.give you thanks and praise that you have blessed this nation, the

:41:18. > :41:24.realms and territories with Elizabeth, our beloved and glorious

:41:24. > :41:30.Queen. In this year of Jubilee, grant her your gifts of love and

:41:30. > :41:35.joy and peace, as she continues in faithful obedience to you, her Lord

:41:35. > :41:41.and her God, in devoted service to her lands and her people and those

:41:41. > :41:50.of the Commonwealth, now and all the days of her life. Through Jesus

:41:50. > :41:55.Christ, our Lord, amen. That specially commissioned prayer

:41:55. > :41:59.concluding the sermon by the moderator, revelation, the Clyde

:41:59. > :42:02.and U2 in one package, and a sense of optimism too. If there is

:42:02. > :42:06.optimism it must lie in the young. Nex five prayers of thanks giving

:42:06. > :42:14.led by five pupils from five schools in Glasgow.

:42:14. > :42:18.Let us pray. We give thanks that for 60 years our Sovereign Lady,

:42:18. > :42:24.Queen Elizabeth, has given instinted and dedicated service to

:42:24. > :42:29.Scotland, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Born witness to

:42:29. > :42:33.the strengthening power of faith and trust in you, given the benefit

:42:33. > :42:36.of wisdom and experience to those in whom power resides and to so

:42:36. > :42:46.many a confidence to meet the challenges of an ever changing

:42:46. > :42:47.

:42:47. > :42:51.worldment -- world. Lord, we thank you.

:42:51. > :42:58.We give thanks that this nation has been blessed through the

:42:58. > :43:02.generations with people of faith, vision, courage, ingenuity and

:43:02. > :43:08.wisdom, folk with skill, inspiration and talent in writing,

:43:08. > :43:12.music and all the orts, engineering and science, philosophy and

:43:12. > :43:16.medicine. Folk who have contributed to learning and given life and work

:43:16. > :43:23.far beyond our borders and thus enhanced the sum of human knowledge

:43:23. > :43:27.and experience. ALL: Lord, we thank you.

:43:27. > :43:32.We give thanks that with the heritage that Cherishs freedom and

:43:32. > :43:37.defends rights for every person, Scotland seeks to welcome the

:43:37. > :43:41.oppressed, the refugee and the homeless, the stranger and the

:43:41. > :43:46.visitor with hospitality and friendliness. We give thanks that

:43:46. > :43:51.the gifts and insights of many cultures and colour expand our

:43:52. > :43:55.national life, encouraging us to reach beyond old boundaries and

:43:55. > :44:04.prejudices and grow to be the people you would have us be.

:44:04. > :44:08.ALL: Lord, we thank you. We give thanks for all those in

:44:08. > :44:12.Scotland, who have the courage to bring us new knowledge,

:44:12. > :44:16.understandings and insights that enable us to cross old and limiting

:44:16. > :44:19.barriers, to break new ground and lead us to be a country prepared to

:44:19. > :44:29.meet today's challenges and seizing its opportunities.

:44:29. > :44:30.

:44:30. > :44:35.ALL: Lord, we thank you. We give thanks for all those whom

:44:35. > :44:39.we Cherish in the circle of love and care around us, parents and

:44:39. > :44:44.children, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbours, for all

:44:44. > :44:48.they bring to our lives and for that which we can bring to theirs.

:44:48. > :44:52.Through all such, we are reminded that your love is greater than our

:44:52. > :44:56.love and that you hold us all in that love which stretches even

:44:56. > :45:00.beyond death itself. So through Christ, our Lord, we may claim to

:45:00. > :45:10.be part of your praising and loved family, on earth and in heaven.
