0:00:02 > 0:00:06On the 8th of November, Typhoon Haiyan tore through the Philippines.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10It was one of the most powerful storms ever recorded on land.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Sea water engulfed towns along the coast,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17leaving a scene of total devastation.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23But the cost in human terms is the most shocking.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25Many thousands have died,

0:00:25 > 0:00:31and up to ten million have been affected by this catastrophic storm.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33These people desperately need your help.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38That's why the Disasters Emergency Committee, or DEC -

0:00:38 > 0:00:43an umbrella organisation that unites 14 UK humanitarian aid agencies -

0:00:43 > 0:00:46has launched an emergency appeal.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49And to help the vast numbers of people affected,

0:00:49 > 0:00:51they need your donation.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55In the city of Tacloban,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57the destruction is on the scale of a tsunami.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Now we're so very hungry and thirsty.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04We don't have water any more, we don't have food.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08Survivors are sleeping outside amid the wreckage.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13And with so many dead in the rubble,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16there is the increasing threat of the spread of infection -

0:01:16 > 0:01:20with young children and elderly people most at risk.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24This is a dreadful situation,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27and the Philippines is a nation of scattered islands

0:01:27 > 0:01:30with communities who are hard to reach.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33A huge effort is required to get aid to the people who need it.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38The priorities are clean water, food and shelter.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42£25 will buy water purification tablets

0:01:42 > 0:01:45for ten families for a month.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49£50 will feed a family for two weeks.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54£100 will provide a family with an emergency shelter and bedding.

0:01:54 > 0:01:59This is a humanitarian crisis, so the DEC needs us to act now.
