0:00:02 > 0:00:06Hunger on a massive scale is looming across East Africa.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10If we don't act now, it will get much worse.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14In all, 22 million people are estimated to need

0:00:14 > 0:00:17some form of humanitarian assistance.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21And the DEC says drought and conflict

0:00:21 > 0:00:25have left 16 million on the brink of starvation

0:00:25 > 0:00:30and in urgent need of food, water and medical treatment.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35The UN has declared a famine in parts of South Sudan.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38And in Somalia, parts of Kenya and Ethiopia,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41people are also now dying of hunger.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Women and children are suffering the most.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50More than 800,000 children under the age of five

0:00:50 > 0:00:52are severely malnourished.

0:00:52 > 0:00:57Without immediate help, they are at risk of starving to death.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03On top of this, outbreaks of cholera are making life even harder.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08These images may make us feel helpless,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10but we CAN make a difference.

0:01:10 > 0:01:15DEC member charities are already delivering life-saving assistance

0:01:15 > 0:01:17in all affected countries.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20But they need your help

0:01:20 > 0:01:24to reduce the scale and the severity of this crisis.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27There is plenty of food in this world.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Nobody should be dying of starvation in 2017.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36For a malnourished child in this situation,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39£5 could provide a week's food.

0:01:39 > 0:01:45£25 could provide a month's supply of life-saving peanut paste.

0:01:45 > 0:01:51£60 could provide clean drinking water for two families for a month.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54And £100 could provide supplies to a clinic

0:01:54 > 0:01:58treating severely malnourished children for a whole week.
